One wound, bound by two hands — one Afghan, one American. A hand that knew the soil of Kandahar, and a hand that had come from across the ocean, pressed together on the same wound to stop the bleeding. That day, neither of us stopped to ask if we understood each other’s language; our hands did the talking.

​I want to begin this article with that image, because I believe it’s where much of the concern some of President Trump’s supporters have today about us, Afghan allies, actually comes from: from the absence of this image. From not knowing that, long before we became the word “ally” or “immigrant,” we were two strangers who became family.

​As a former ally of American forces in Afghanistan, I’ve decided this time, instead of only speaking from emotion, to try to understand why some supporters of this administration hold a cautious, or even negative, view of us. Because I believe that if we truly want these promises fulfilled one day, we need to tell the story of the wound we bound together, and also listen to the concerns on the other side of this story.

​Twenty Years of Presence, Twenty Years of Cooperation

​The presence of American forces in Afghanistan lasted nearly twenty years. Over those two decades, thousands of Afghans interpreters, drivers, engineers, administrative staff, security forces, doctors, teachers worked alongside those same forces, in many different capacities. This cooperation wasn’t limited to the battlefield; it extended into building schools, hospitals, roads, and government institutions.

​Among that large population, as in any large community, it’s possible that one or two individuals committed a crime or wrongdoing. We, as Afghan allies, condemn such acts in the strongest possible terms. But that should never become the standard by which thousands of other people who served with honesty, courage, and loyalty are judged. No community can be judged by the actions of one or two individuals; not the American community, and not the Afghan community.

​And let me say this too: Afghanistan is our homeland. But America has also become a second homeland for many of us a place where, for as long as we live, we will live and serve its people honestly, just as we once served our own country for years, alongside its soldiers.

​Economic Concerns Are Legitimate Concerns

​Many supporters of this administration raise a fair question: why should America spend its limited resources accepting new immigrants when Americans themselves are facing economic challenges? This is a legitimate policy concern, not necessarily prejudice.

​My answer, as someone who knows this story up close, is this: Afghan allies aren’t asking for charity; they’re asking for a contract to be honored a contract signed in exchange for direct service to the U.S. military. That’s different from a general immigration program. But I understand that from a distance, this distinction isn’t always clear.

​Something You May Not Know: For Years, We Lived Like a Family

​Let me say something that I think a lot of these concerns stem from not knowing: did you know that for years, in Afghanistan, we lived alongside American forces? Not as two separate groups, but like one family.

​We were the ones who showed each other the way; he’d ask me which route was safe, I’d learn from him how to use his equipment. We were the ones who stayed beside each other through hard days; on nights when bad news arrived, or a family was in danger, we didn’t leave him alone, and he didn’t leave us alone either. We were the ones who defended each other’s lives on the battlefield; many times, when danger closed in, without thinking, we stood between a bullet and our friend.

​And when one of us was wounded it didn’t matter whether he was Afghan or American the other, in that same moment, knelt down, bound the wound, applied pressure to stop the bleeding, and didn’t let go of his hand until help arrived. These scenes repeated themselves dozens, hundreds of times, over those years. These aren’t things you see in official reports or daily news; but they were the truth of our everyday life.

​So when I hear some people, without knowing this reality, think of us as an unknown threat or an extra burden, it makes me sad not angry, but sad, because I know that if they had seen even a single day of that shared life, they would never think that way again. We weren’t strangers. We were family; a family that war bound together, rather than tearing apart.

​A Fact That Needs Clarifying: Did the Biden Administration Really Abandon Us?

​Some of the president’s supporters argue that Afghan allies were abandoned by the Biden administration. But let me, as a firsthand witness, state the truth: we were not abandoned by the Biden administration. On the contrary, it was that very administration that created legal pathways for us to enter the United States.

​I remember clearly that in press conferences, whenever a question came up about Afghan allies, then–Secretary of State Antony Blinken repeatedly stressed that helping these Afghans wasn’t just a priority for his administration it was a deep and lasting commitment. He and then–Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, in various settings, stated clearly that as long as a single ally remained in Afghanistan or the region, efforts to bring them out through legal channels would continue.

​But today, if you want to judge the reality, all you need to do is look at one date: in the very first days of his term, President Trump signed an executive order that closed that same legal immigration pathway for Afghan allies a pathway that remains closed to this day.

​And here’s the more painful part: when members of Congress today ask the current Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, or the current Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, about the fate of abandoned Afghan allies, neither gives a clear or convincing answer. Silence, or vague responses, have replaced the explicit commitment once voiced by officials of the previous administration.

​Why I Believe We Can Bridge This Gap

​I believe that many supporters of the current administration, if they heard our real story up close — not through general statistics, but through the real stories of people who fought beside their own sons and daughters their views would change. Veterans who are themselves conservative and voted for this same party are often our strongest supporters, because they know, firsthand, exactly who we are.

​Perhaps the real solution isn’t convincing an entire political party all at once, but telling individual, real, verifiable stories — stories that connect human beings to human beings, beyond political labels.

​That wound, bound by two hands, healed a long time ago. But the bond it created never did. Economic concerns, and concerns born from simply not knowing the reality of the life we shared, are understandable and deserve respect. But when we put the facts side by side twenty years of honest cooperation, a shared everyday life, a hand that once pressed against a friend’s wound, and a legal pathway that one administration opened and another closed a clearer picture emerges: we are people who once knelt beside an American, and held on until help arrived. Because what usually happens after any major crisis isn’t that everyone learns every lesson — it’s that some lessons get set aside precisely because they’re painful.

​This article is an attempt to revisit a few of the lessons that everyone talked about five years ago, but which, in practice today, seem to have largely been forgotten.

​Lesson One: A Leader Who Fled Before His Own People

One of the bitterest lessons of that day wasn’t the kind anyone wanted to write into a textbook; but it may have been the deepest wound left on the hearts of the Afghan people. The president at the time, in the very hours when his citizens, his soldiers, and his allies were still in the streets of Kabul searching for a safe way out, boarded a plane himself and left the country.

​This wasn’t just a political decision; it was a fundamental failure in the meaning of leadership. Leadership, in its true sense, means being the last person to leave the field, not the first. When a leader entrusted with the responsibility of millions of people left the country, at the most critical moment, ahead of ordinary citizens, ahead of the soldiers who had fought for him for years, he sent everyone a clear message: in the moment of truth, every man for himself.

​This lesson still matters today, because it reminds us that the collapse of a system sometimes doesn’t begin on the battlefield, but at the heart of its leadership. Soldiers who had stood on the front lines, once they realized their leader was gone, had to ask themselves: who were they even fighting for anymore? That was exactly the moment many security forces realized they had no commander left.

​And five years later, this lesson still hasn’t been fully absorbed: that the stability of any system depends not only on weapons and budgets, but on whether its leaders stay beside their people in the hardest days.

​Lesson Two: Local Forces Cannot Survive Alone Without Sustained Support

​Afghan security forces fought for years with equipment and training that depended on foreign assistance. When that support was suddenly withdrawn without an adequate replacement, their operational capacity collapsed at the same rate. This is a lesson that matters far beyond Afghanistan, for any military coalition anywhere in the world: building a force that depends on foreign aid, without a clear plan for its long-term sustainability, is building a structure that collapses at the first shock.

​Has this lesson found its way into America’s military decision-making today? The evidence suggests this question still has no clear answer.

​Lesson Three: Political Promises Must Be Backed by Solid Implementation Systems

​One of the bitterest lessons of those days was that making a promise is easy; building a system that can actually deliver on that promise quickly and reliably is a different matter entirely. When America told thousands of Afghan allies that a safe immigration pathway existed for them, the administrative structure behind that promise was so slow and complicated that it took years just to review a small fraction of the cases.

​Five years later, that same slow structure still stands sometimes even slower. This means the lesson that should have been learned that a promise without a fast implementation system is, in practice, an empty promise still hasn’t been fully absorbed into policy.

​Lesson Four: The Collapse of a System Is Rarely the Result of One Mistake — It’s the Accumulation of Many

​After the fall of Kabul, many looked for a single factor to blame: one decision, one signature, one moment. But the reality was more complicated than that. Administrative corruption that had taken root over years, mistrust between society and government, weak local structures, and foreign political decisions all combined to produce that rapid collapse.

​This lesson matters a great deal because it reminds us that oversimplified analyses of major crises are usually misleading. Yet in today’s public discourse, this complexity is still, more often than not, ignored in favor of simple, single-cause explanations.

​Lesson Five: Public Memory Is Shorter Than We Think

​Perhaps the bitterest lesson is that once a crisis drops out of the headlines, public attention fades far faster than expected. In the summer of 2021, millions of people followed the news from Kabul every single day. Today, many of those same people don’t even know the situation of Afghan allies remains unresolved.

​This decline in attention has an important consequence: as public pressure fades, so does the political pressure to solve the problem. And that is exactly why cases that should have been resolved within a few months are still open, five years later.

​Lesson Six: Veterans Are a Nation’s Living Memory

​A point that gets too little attention is that the veterans who served in Afghanistan are, today, the one group that continues to keep this issue alive. Unlike much of the broader public, they haven’t forgotten — because for them, this isn’t a news story. It’s part of their personal lives.

​This lesson reminds us that when the wider society loses its memory, it is usually the smaller, directly affected groups who keep that memory alive. The question is: are policymakers listening to this smaller but more persistent voice?

​A Lesson Still Worth Believing In: Real Power Belongs to the People

​Today, when we look at how Afghanistan and its allies sit in the minds of the American people, a clear picture emerges: veterans, some senators, and a number of members of Congress have not forgotten this issue. But I believe in something else too in the broader voice of the American people, a voice capable of bringing about far greater change.

​Throughout their history, the American people have proven, again and again, that their conscience is bigger than any single policy. These are the people who don’t stay silent once a truth becomes clear to them; who don’t forget when they see a broken promise; who, even in the hardest moments of their own history, have held on to values like fairness, loyalty, and humanity. These are the same people who, in past crises, when politicians fell short, raised their own voices from the factories, the farms, the churches, and the homes of this country, and brought about change themselves. This is the kind of power that no government, however powerful, can afford to ignore.

​Midterm elections have shown, time and again, that these people, when they choose to, can bring about sweeping shifts in the direction of policy not through violence, not through noise, but through the same simple, powerful tool democracy has placed in their hands: the vote. Whoever wins a midterm election didn’t create that victory alone; it is the people who, through their votes, decide the outcome. People who work in factories, on farms, in hospitals, in schools; people whose names may never appear in a newspaper, but who together build a force no politician can withstand.

​These are the same people I have always admired from the outside, as an observer beyond their borders people who, despite all their political disagreements, can stand together when it comes to their collective conscience. People who sent their own sons and daughters to the farthest corners of the world to defend values they themselves believed in, and who, to this day, still carry that same belief in their hearts.

​This may be the most important lesson of all: in the end, it is the collective voice of the American people that determines which direction is taken not the will of a single person or a single party. And it is these same people who give me, and many other Afghan allies, the hope that this story will one day reach the ending it deserves.

​Five years was enough time for at least a few simple lessons to become policy: the true meaning of leadership in a crisis, fast implementation systems for promises made, and sustained attention — not only in the moment of crisis, but for years afterward.

​But what we see today is that many of these lessons haven’t just been forgotten they are being repeated, this time in the form of suspended immigration programs and administrative silence. Perhaps the greatest lesson still unlearned is this: forgetting, itself, is the costliest mistake of all. But the hope lies in the same place: in the voice of the American people, who, whenever they choose to, can change the course once again.

International journalists, human rights organizations, and American veterans themselves have been telling the story of abandoned Afghan allies for years. Pending files, canceled flights, families left in uncertainty for years all of this is accessible to anyone in any other corner of the world who might consider working with America.

​This means that if America needs a local ally somewhere else tomorrow, that person will no longer make their decision in a vacuum. They can search, read, and understand what happened to those who once made that exact same choice.

​Why This Is Not Just a Moral Issue, But an Operational One

​Some believe that the issue of Afghan allies is merely a humanitarian debate; something belonging to the heart rather than to strategy. But this view is incomplete. Military and intelligence experts have repeatedly warned that when a foreign power loses its credibility in keeping commitments, it pays the price concretely on future battlefields.

​Soldiers entering an area without local intelligence are exposed to greater risk. Operations conducted without local cooperation are less precise. And decisions made without local knowledge are more likely to end in failure. These are all real costs directly connected to the lives of American soldiers, not just the country’s international reputation.

​If you ask a veteran who served in Afghanistan why this issue matters so much to them, their answer is usually simple and direct: they know that without the help of a local interpreter or guide, they might not be alive today. Today, these veterans are among the closest observers of this crisis not because they are politicians, but because they have direct experience.

​When these individuals see that the promise made to their allies has been stalled for years, it is not merely a personal concern; it is a warning about what will happen to the next generation of American soldiers in the next war or operation.

​My Voice, as an Abandoned Ally

​Let me say this in my own voice, not as an analyst: as an abandoned ally of America, I believe that the future leaders of this country, if they truly believe in democracy, must honor the commitments America made to us, its Afghan allies.

​I know that these commitments have not been forgotten by all of America; it is only a portion of the current leaders who put these promises aside and broke the pact made with us. But I know that the American people, American senators, and American veterans have not forgotten us. And I am certain that one day, these promises will be kept.

​For many veterans who served in Afghanistan, the fate of their local allies isn’t just a political headline it’s part of their personal identity. These are people who spent nights beside interpreters and guides, people who know that without that local cooperation, they might not be alive today.

​When these veterans watch their own government turn its back on those same allies, it isn’t just political disappointment it can become a heavy psychological burden. Survivor’s guilt, a sense of betrayal, doubt about the meaning of their own service. This is a cost that settles into the mental health of an entire generation of American service members a cost the country’s healthcare and social systems will have to carry for years.

​Cost Three: America’s Image in the Eyes of the World

​American power has never been purely military or economic; a large part of this country’s influence comes from what analysts call “soft power” the credibility that makes other nations want to cooperate with America voluntarily, not out of obligation.

Lawmakers from both parties have repeatedly called for speeding up the processing of Afghan allies’ cases. And yet, when the administration ignores this shared demand, another divide forms a divide between the White House and part of Congress, between the administration and a large portion of the military and veteran community, and between the administration and the segment of the public that follows these stories.

​These divides carry political costs not tomorrow, but in the long run, when this administration needs the support of these same veterans and these same lawmakers for future missions.

​Cost Five: A Cost Never Recorded on Any Balance Sheet

​Perhaps the most important cost is the one that never appears in any official report: the gap between what America claims to be and what it actually demonstrates through its actions. When a country presents itself as a defender of freedom and loyalty to its allies, but in practice leaves thousands of its own allies in limbo, that contradiction weakens the country’s moral standing in every future debate about human rights or international commitments.

​Cost Six: A Voice That Isn’t Heard, But Won’t Go Silent Either

​But perhaps the heaviest cost is the one fewer people talk about these days: the growing dissatisfaction of the American people themselves with their current administration.

​These are people who voted. And a large share of those same people are saying, plainly, today: we didn’t vote for our allies to be left in complete uncertainty. We voted because we believed America was a country that keeps its word a country that doesn’t forget the people who fought for it, even in the hardest days.

​You hear this voice in the polls. In the letters that arrive at congressional offices. In town halls, where veterans stand face to face with their local representatives and ask: why? Why is someone who fought alongside my son or daughter still waiting for a simple answer?

​And the answer these people usually get is silence. A silence that itself sends a clear message: your voice doesn’t carry much weight with this administration.

​This isn’t an ordinary political cost. It is the gradual erosion of something every democracy needs to survive: the public’s trust that their voice is actually heard in government decisions. When that trust is tested again and again without response, something cracks in the relationship between the people and their government a crack that takes far more time and energy to repair than resolving a single visa case.

​And this erosion isn’t just an abstract feeling anymore it shows up at the ballot box too. The party currently in power has suffered repeated losses in one midterm election after another. Even some of the very voters who once supported this party are now withholding their vote again not out of indifference, but because they’ve come to understand that the current administration doesn’t genuinely listen to what they have to say.

​And this isn’t only about Afghan allies. The issue of Afghan allies is just one example of a larger pattern: on many other issues too both domestic and foreign policy people have repeatedly raised their voices, only to see the current administration make little real effort to listen or respond. When people see this pattern repeat itself, again and again, they no longer see it as an isolated incident; they recognize it as a style of governing. And it is precisely that recognition that shows up, election after election, in the form of a negative vote.

​Conclusion

​The cost of forgetting Afghan allies isn’t a cost paid only by those allies — though it certainly is that too. It settles into the broken trust of future allies, into the mental health of veterans, into America’s international image, into the growing divide between the government and the people, and into the rising frustration of citizens who voted for something different.

​The current U.S. administration may believe it can quietly leave these cases stalled in the background of everyday politics. But the cost of that choice will, sooner or later, surface in a way this administration least expects — whether at the ballot box, or in the conscience of a nation that still believes promises are meant to be kept.

​Twenty years. Twenty years of war, twenty years of loss, twenty years of a promise that thousands of American and Afghan soldiers signed with their own blood. And then, in a single day — August 15, 2021 — all of it collapsed before the eyes of the world.

​I want to tell you about that day. Not to blame anyone without reason, but to ask: who was responsible for this collapse? And more importantly, today, five years later, what responsibility does the current U.S. president still carry?

​The Day a Capital Fell Without a Single Shot Fired

​On August 15, 2021, Kabul fell not in a great battle, not after months of resistance, but within a matter of hours. Afghanistan’s president at the time left the country. The Taliban entered the presidential palace unopposed.

​That day, Kabul’s airport became an image that will never be erased from the world’s memory: people clinging to the sides of departing aircraft, terrified that if they didn’t leave then, they would never get another chance.

​I Say This Honestly: We Fought Bravely

​Let me be clear about this, because I was there myself: officers, soldiers, non-commissioned officers we fought bravely. We defended our provinces to our last breath. It was not the Afghan security forces who lost this country. We stood on the front lines while, day by day, our resources dwindled.

​What was broken from the very foundation lay elsewhere. The air support that had backed us for years on the battlefield was cut off, suddenly. The ammunition that was supposed to arrive never came. Logistical support grew thinner by the moment, while the enemy’s pressure grew heavier by the moment. No soldier, however brave, can keep fighting forever without ammunition, without air support, without resources.

​Who Was Truly Responsible for This Collapse?

​The responsibility for this collapse rests with those who never saw the battlefield up close. Afghan politicians, who spent years locked in power struggles instead of building a system people could trust. Local commanders who, in many provinces, negotiated and surrendered instead of organizing resistance.

​These were the people who made the decisions not us, who stood in the trenches. We did our duty. Those who were supposed to stand behind us whether in Kabul or in Washington fell short.

​SIV and the P1/P2 Cases: A Door That Closed Overnight

​For anyone unfamiliar with these terms, let me explain simply. The Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program was a pathway for those who had worked directly for the U.S. military or government in Afghanistan interpreters, drivers, contracted staff. Alongside it, the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) had two other categories: Priority One (P1) for those referred through the UN or the U.S. embassy, and Priority Two (P2) a faster track for groups of particular humanitarian concern who could apply directly.

​Thousands of Afghan families remained in these lines for years; some had even already been approved for resettlement by the U.S. government and were waiting for their flights. But in January 2025, in the very first days of the new administration, the current U.S. president, Donald Trump, signed an executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. That decision left thousands of Afghan P1 and P2 cases frozen in place including family members of currently serving American troops, unaccompanied children waiting to reunite with family, women who had served in Female Tactical Platoons, judges, journalists, and former members of Afghanistan’s parliament.

​The result was scenes that should never have been repeated in the America we knew: families whose flights were canceled just days before they were set to arrive in the United States; people who had spent years working for the American military, overnight, finding themselves in complete uncertainty about their future.

​Later, SIV visa processing was halted as well; in November 2025, the same administration’s State Department suspended the issuance of any visas to Afghan passport holders. Even people whose SIV visas had already been printed were left waiting.

​After the Collapse, What Happened to Afghan Girls and Women?

​If you want to know the true cost of that day, look no further than the lives of Afghan girls today. Starting in March 2022, the Taliban barred girls from secondary school; a few months later, university doors closed to women as well. Today, five years on, nearly 2.4 million Afghan girls remain shut out of secondary education, and the United Nations considers Afghanistan the only country in the world that has formally barred girls and women from education.

​This isn’t only about school. Women have been pushed out of most professions, banned from parks and gyms, and according to recent UN reports, since September 2025 they have even been barred from entering UN buildings. Women who had worked for the Afghan government for years and had been told to stay home were informed in January 2026 that they would no longer receive salaries and that their employment had effectively ended.

​Every time I look at these numbers, I think of the women who worked alongside Afghan and American security forces to build a better future judges who ruled against injustice, journalists who told the truth, police officers who protected other women and children. Today, many of those same women are either confined in silence in their homes, or still standing in the endless lines of a suspended immigration program, in complete uncertainty, waiting for an answer from America.

​Five Years Later, the Same Question Remains Open

​Today, five years have passed since that day. And yet, thousands of Afghan allies are still waiting. Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) cases remain stuck in long queues. Some families have spent years in third countries, living in complete uncertainty, waiting for an answer. Others are still in Afghanistan.

​Once, in the middle of a firefight, everything fell apart. Sounds came from every direction, dust and smoke stung our eyes, and in one moment I found myself separated from the rest of the group. Alone, behind a half-collapsed wall, my heart pounding as if it wanted to burst from my chest.

​He noticed. He could have waited, could have followed orders, could have done the most logical thing: stay put until things calmed down. But he didn’t. He turned back. Under fire, through the dust and the sound of gunfire, he ran toward me — as if I were his countryman, as if I were his brother.

I see men who once fought alongside these very American soldiers — who served as interpreters, as guides, as brothers-in-arms — being detained today, in the streets of the very country they once risked their lives for, by immigration police (ICE) officers. Men who once slept under the same roof as those soldiers now wait in detention centers, uncertain of what will happen to them.

​This image weighs on me, because he could have been one of them. That same man who, in the trench, gripped my arm and said, “I’m not leaving you” — if he had sought refuge in America today instead of me, his fate might not have been any different from theirs. A file lost in paperwork, a door that stays closed, officials who see no difference between a former ally and an unknown migrant.

​People who were once promised safety now live in fear of a knock at the door. People who once fought beside these same American soldiers must now prove they are not “dangerous” — the very people who once risked their own lives to save an American soldier’s life. This contradiction breaks the heart of anyone who has tasted that trench for themselves.

​I am not saying every policy is wrong. But I am saying that when someone has fought for you, the very least you can do is recognize them with respect, not suspicion. Those who once stood shoulder to shoulder with American soldiers do not deserve fear and detention today; they deserve gratitude.

​Today, the Borders Have Been Rebuilt

​But today, the American government has drawn the borders again. Travel bans, frozen visas, and harsh policies have rebuilt the very borders we once erased in the trenches.

​But there is something the government cannot build or destroy: the bridges that, this time, have formed in our hearts instead of dividing them. When we talk about the war in Afghanistan, the image that usually comes to mind is one of male soldiers — rifles, mountains, nights of operations. But one part of this history has rarely been told; a part I witnessed with my own eyes and have never forgotten: the role of the women who fought beside us, both from the ranks of the Afghan military and among American forces.

​These women, without ever drawing the attention of the media, did things no man could have done. Today, I want to tell you a few of their stories — stories that have stayed with me to this day.

​Teachers Whose Names No One Knows

​Before I tell the stories from the battlefield, I need to say something few people know: some of the best military instructors I ever had were women. Women from American Special Forces, who taught us tactics, precision, and discipline — with the same seriousness and skill as any male officer, if not more.

​One of these women, teaching marksmanship, was more precise and more patient than any male instructor I’d had before her. She never let a small mistake slide, but every time, with respect and calm, she’d explain it again and again until she was certain we truly understood. From her, I learned not just military tactics, but a kind of patience and precision that has stayed with me to this day.

​Many of us, before meeting these women, didn’t believe a woman could be as tough and capable on the battlefield as a man. But they changed that belief in us forever — not with words, but through action.

​The Women Who Opened a Closed Door

​In our culture, men could not speak directly with Afghan women or enter the women’s quarters of a home. It was a deep cultural boundary that no male soldier could ever cross. But American servicewomen, through Female Tactical Platoons, did exactly that.

​I remember, during one operation, entering a village where the women and children of a household had hidden themselves away in fear. None of us men could get close. But one of these servicewomen walked forward calmly, knelt down, and reached out her hand with a smile. Within minutes, the same woman who had been trembling with fear was talking with her. That American woman wasn’t just a soldier — she was a bridge between two worlds that no man could have built.

​The Woman Who Was Both Soldier and Nurse

​One of our female colleagues in the Afghan Special Forces carried both combat and medical duties at once. In the harshest conditions, when a male soldier was wounded, she would move directly into the field, bind the wound, and stay beside the injured man until emergency help arrived — in the very moments when bullets were still flying.

​I once asked her, “Aren’t you afraid?” With a strange calm, she said: “I am. But if I don’t go, who will?” She never let her gender hold her back from her responsibility. On the contrary, she was always the first to volunteer.

​The Woman Who Taught Village Girls Their Letters

​In one remote village, where no school existed for girls, one American servicewoman set aside a few hours every time we visited to teach the young girls their letters and simple numbers. It wasn’t an official duty of hers — it was something she chose to do, simply because her heart told her to.

​One day, one of those girls, using a pencil that woman had given her as a gift, wrote her own name in the dirt. That American woman, her eyes filled with tears, told me: “Maybe this is the only thing this war leaves behind for this girl. But I hope it’s enough.”

​The Woman Who Saved a Man’s Life After an Explosion

​During one operation, after an explosion, one of our male soldiers was severely wounded. In the chaos, it was an American female officer who reached him first — amid the dust and the shouting, she bound his wound, controlled the bleeding, and stayed with him until the helicopter arrived.

​That soldier later told me: “When I opened my eyes and saw her, I knew I was alive. To this day, whenever I remember her, I think about how courage has nothing to do with gender.”

​A Woman Can Be Everything

​What I witnessed firsthand over these years brought me to a deep conviction: a woman can be everything. A woman can be a fearless Special Forces officer, every bit as capable and unafraid as any man on the battlefield. A woman can be a teacher — someone who, with a single pencil and a little patience, changes the future of a village girl. A woman can be a guide — a voice that shows the way in the darkest moments. A woman can be a homemaker, a mother — someone who, far from her family, in the middle of war, still prays for her children. A woman can be a doctor — someone whose steady hands bind the deepest wounds. And a woman can be an engineer — someone who, with precision and logic, builds bridges, whether of stone and steel, or of trust between two cultures.

​I saw women who, in a single day, were officer, nurse, teacher, and mother all at once — every role held together in one person, without any of them dimming the others. These women proved to me that strength isn’t confined to a man’s arm; strength lives in a heart capable of being courageous, gentle, and brilliant, all at the same time.

​Why These Stories Must Be Told

​These women, Afghan and American alike, were never seen the way their male counterparts were. Their stories rarely found a place in the official records of this war. But I witnessed their sacrifice and their mastery with my own eyes, and I cannot let these stories be forgotten.

​These women showed me that brotherhood and sisterhood know no boundary — not of gender, not of culture, not of nationality. With quiet courage, they opened a door that could never have opened without them, and with quiet patience, they taught us things no military manual ever could.

​One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned over these years is that “America” is not one single thing. When I say “America turned its back on us,” I don’t mean the people who fought beside me, who cried with me, who laughed with me. I mean the government — the one that makes decisions, signs papers, and sometimes, forgets.

​Governments Decide; People Feel

​Governments operate through documents — through budgets, strategy, national interest. A government can decide, in a single day, to withdraw from a country, and on that very same day, leave behind thousands of people who had spent years believing in its promises. That’s the nature of governments — not just in America, but anywhere in the world.

​But people aren’t like that. People operate through the heart. The soldier who fought beside me didn’t decide to save my life because of an order from Washington. He decided because he saw me as his brother. That decision came from his heart, not from an official document.

​Two Kinds of Promises

​Over these years, I heard two kinds of promises. One kind was official — the kind written into government statements, political speeches, and congressional records. These promises were often beautiful, but fragile. A change in government, a budget crisis, a new political priority — that was enough to make them forgotten.

​The other kind of promise was one human being made to another; like the Captain who told me, “Brother, I will never forget you,” or the soldier who entrusted me with his letter and said, “You’re the only person I trust with this.” These promises had no document behind them — only a look, a handshake, a heart. And strangely, it’s these promises that have held up to this day, even when the official ones were forgotten long ago.

​When Politics Overlooks Brotherhood

​Today, P-1 cases — designed for allies facing imminent danger — remain stuck in bureaucratic limbo. This is a political decision; the result of an order, a budget, a set of priorities. But when I look at the emails and messages I receive from American veterans, I see that this decision has nothing to do with how the American people actually feel.

​Veterans who fought beside us are emailing their senators today. Military families are launching campaigns for Afghan allies. Grassroots organizations are working day and night to speed up immigration cases. These are not the government. These are the people — people who still honor the promise their soldiers made to us.

​A Difference I See Every Day

​When I remember the Captain who entrusted me with his letter, or the soldier who reached his hand out to me in the dark, or the woman who sat for hours beside village women — I understand that these are the same people who, today, thousands of miles away, still hear our voice.

​But the government is something else entirely. The government signs and walks away. The government passes a budget and forgets. The government makes a promise, and then, buried among other priorities, loses track of it.

​This is the difference I see every day, in the emails I receive from the American people — emails that say: “We haven’t forgotten you, even if our government has.”

​There’s one message I will never forget. A woman, the wife of a veteran, wrote to me: “My husband has nightmares at night about leaving you behind on that road. He doesn’t know your name, but he knows you exist. I call our senator’s office every week, just for him. And for you.” This woman had never met me. No document obligated her to do anything. She was simply a human being who decided not to forget.

​Why This Difference Matters

​If we fail to understand this difference, we risk falling into complete bitterness and despair — we might come to believe an entire nation abandoned us. But this distinction is what allows me to still hold on to hope. Because I know that the people who fought beside me for years are still fighting for me — not on the battlefield, but in the emails they send their senators, in the articles they read and share, and in hearts that still beat for us.

​Governments change. Policies change. Presidents come and go, each with their own set of priorities. But the people who fought with us, laughed with us, and cried with us remain the same people. That, perhaps, is the one thing that has never changed in these twenty years.

​This is a question many of my friends ask me: “After all these betrayals, all this abandonment, all these broken promises — how do you still believe in humanity? How can you still smile, still pray, still hope for tomorrow?”

​My answer is always the same: because I saw humanity with my own eyes. Not in books, not in movies, but in the dark nights of operations, in the middle of gunfire, and in the eyes of soldiers who came from the other side of the world to show me what it means to be human.

​Today, I want to tell you the story of that faith.

​A Piece of Chocolate, and a Crying Child

​I remember, one day in a remote village, an American soldier sat down beside an Afghan child. The child was crying — he had lost his father in an explosion. The soldier, without understanding a single word of the boy’s language, sat beside him, placed a hand gently on his head, and pulled a piece of chocolate from his pocket to give him.

​In that moment, I saw something that has stayed with me to this day. I saw a human being who wanted nothing in return for comforting a child — not money, not power, not even a thank you. He simply wanted that child to smile, even for a moment.

​That soldier knew nothing about the child — not his name, not his language, not his story. But he knew one thing: this was a human being, and he was a human being too. And that was enough.

​Women Who Reached Out to Women

​One of the deepest examples of humanity I witnessed came from American servicewomen — women who, as part of Female Tactical Platoons, went into villages alongside our forces. In our culture, men could not speak directly with Afghan women or enter the women’s quarters of a home. But these American women opened a door that no male soldier could ever have reached.

​I remember one of these women, in a village, sitting for hours with local women and girls — listening to their pain, giving first aid to their sick children, and teaching the alphabet to girls who had never had the chance to attend school. Once, one of these women told me: “I didn’t come here just to be a soldier. I came because these women and girls need a voice that only a woman can be for them.”

​Those American women carried no weapon capable of winning people’s hearts — only patience, only the willingness to listen, and a kind of respect no military training manual ever taught them. They showed me that humanity knows no gender — it only needs a heart willing to beat for someone else’s pain.

​A Hand Reached Out Under a Blazing Sun

​I saw this same sense of humanity again, on a completely different day — not on the battlefield, but on a hot, dusty road near a small village. Our convoy came across an elderly Afghan man collapsed by the roadside — weak, exhausted, struggling to breathe in the heat and dehydration. Our Afghan driver wanted to keep moving, since the area wasn’t secure. But one of the American soldiers, without a moment’s hesitation, got out of the vehicle, lifted the old man onto his shoulders, and carried him to the nearest patch of shade. He gave him his own water, cooled his forehead with a damp cloth, and stayed with him until he was sure the old man was doing better.

​I watched from a distance and thought to myself: this soldier gains nothing from this. No one would report it. No one would give him a medal. He simply saw a human being who needed help, and he reached out his hand.

​And that, to me, was humanity — a hand reached out under a blazing sun, or a hand reached out in the dark, telling you: “You are not alone.”

​Two Fathers, Far From Home

​Many of us, at our bases, used to sit by the fire at night and talk — not about war, not about politics, but about our families, our dreams, and the simple things every human being, everywhere in the world, thinks about.

​One night, an American soldier told me about his daughter, who had just been born. There were tears in his eyes. I told him about my mother, waiting for me in a remote village. In that moment, he wasn’t an American, and I wasn’t an Afghan. We were simply two fathers, far from home, missing our families.

​Humanity means, in that moment, forgetting the borders and seeing only a fellow human being.

​Why, Despite Every Abandonment, I Still Believe

​Yes, I was abandoned. All of us were abandoned. The American government — the same one that once fought beside us and called us brothers — has forgotten us today. Promises were broken. P-1 cases, designed for allies facing imminent danger, are today either frozen or moving at an unprecedented crawl. We sit in the dark, waiting for someone to hear us.

​And yet, I still believe in humanity. Because humanity was never something governments showed us. Humanity is something people showed us.

​I’ve seen Americans risk their lives to save an Afghan child. I’ve seen women cross cultural boundaries, with respect, just to hear the voices of Afghan women and girls. I’ve seen a soldier, with no one watching, carry an exhausted old man on his shoulders. I’ve seen an officer, on a cold winter night, give me his own blanket and go cold himself.

​Governments come and go. Politicians make promises and forget them. But humanity stays in the hearts of people. And I have seen it with my own eyes.

​Humanity Is a Choice

​Every day, we face a choice: we can let bitterness become an excuse to turn away from humanity, or we can, despite every wound, still choose to believe in goodness.

​I have chosen to believe in humanity — not out of naivety, but because I have touched it myself. I have seen a human being risk everything to help another. I have seen a single smile break through darkness. I have seen brotherhood and sisterhood prove stronger than any border.

​And that is why I still believe in humanity.

​Once again, the debate over support for Afghans who sought refuge in the United States after the fall of Kabul in August 2021 — or who are still waiting to reach it — has resurfaced in the U.S. Congress. According to official reports, during the evacuation operations of those years, more than 82,000 Afghans were brought to the United States under a program known as “Operation Allies Welcome.” Of those, nearly 76,000 entered on temporary humanitarian parole status alone — a status that provides no direct pathway to permanent residency.

​But more painful still is the situation of thousands of Afghans who remain outside the United States, still waiting for the fate of their legal immigration cases to be decided — particularly those registered under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP), in a category known as P-1 cases.

​The P-1 Case Crisis

​P-1 cases are a category of refugee applications referred to the U.S. refugee program by American government agencies — typically for Afghans who worked closely with American institutions, including former members of Afghanistan’s defense forces, women who served on Female Tactical Platoons, judges, journalists, and former members of parliament. I myself was referred directly through the Pentagon to the U.S. State Department, and my case was registered under this very category.

​But according to reports, since January 2025, following a presidential executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, processing of these cases — including both the P-1 and P-2 categories — came to a complete halt. This means no new cases are being accepted, no existing cases are being processed, and even already-approved cases are not permitted to travel. This freeze has left thousands of vetted, approved Afghan allies — including many referred directly by American institutions such as the Pentagon — stranded in third countries like Pakistan, without stable legal status, in deeply uncertain conditions.

​The Voice of Members of Congress

​In response to this situation, Representative Jason Crow, a Democrat from Colorado and a veteran of the Afghanistan war, joined a bipartisan group of 82 other House members in June 2026 to demand accountability regarding reported administration plans to transfer Afghan refugees to unsafe third countries.

​Separately, a bill titled the “Afghanistan TPS Act” has been introduced by Rep. Crow, along with Representatives Sam Liccardo (D-California), Don Bacon (R-Nebraska), and Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Florida). This bill would extend Temporary Protected Status for eligible Afghans currently inside the United States through July 1, 2029, and would prevent their deportation.

​Why This Matters

​If this bill passes, Afghan allies living in the United States would be able to work freely and would be protected from the threat of deportation. But my message to the American people goes beyond this one piece of legislation.

​Afghans holding P-1 cases are, in most instances, people who worked directly — and at mortal risk — in support of America’s mission in Afghanistan. They are not in the United States, where their voices might be heard, and they cannot live safely in Afghanistan either. The suspension of their cases means that years of cooperation, security vetting, and hope for a new life — even for those referred directly by the Pentagon — remain frozen in bureaucratic limbo.

​From the bottom of my heart, I thank the people of the United States — and especially the veterans and military families who have kept the call for justice for Afghan allies alive. You are the ones who did not let these families be forgotten in silence.

​Introduction

​Anyone who’s been in war knows that the hardest moments aren’t the moments of gunfire. The hardest moments are when you have to choose between two bad options — when your heart tells you one path, and your duty tells you another. And no one can make that decision for you.

​For me, that moment came on a cold winter night in northern Afghanistan — a night when I was on a mission with a team of American Special Forces. A mission that was supposed to be simple, but turned into one of the hardest nights of my life. A night when I was forced to make a decision that has stayed with me to this day.

​A note: for reasons of security and personal discretion, no names are used in this piece. But every part of it is true.

​A Mission That Looked Simple

​A few days before that night, intelligence had reached us that a group of enemy fighters, hiding in a mountainous region in the north, were planning to attack a village. Our mission was simple: go in, find them, and neutralize the threat. A nighttime operation, with minimal contact.

​We were a fifteen-man team — seven American soldiers and eight Afghan Special Forces, including me. Everything was going according to plan until we got close to the village. There, we ran into a force much larger than expected — around forty fighters, armed with heavy weapons.

​The team commander, an American officer, decided we should wait for backup. But backup never came. Communications went down. We were on our own.

​The Firefight Among the Rocks

​It wasn’t long before the fighting began. Bullets came from every direction. We were forced to fall back and take cover in a rocky area. But the enemy kept closing in.

​I was pinned down behind a boulder with an American soldier — a young man with blue eyes and a smile that never left his face. He’d only been in Afghanistan a few months, but his courage was already well known among us.

​Suddenly, he shouted: “I’m hit!”

​I looked over. Blood was pouring from his left leg — a bullet had struck his thigh. He could still walk, but barely. And the enemy kept getting closer.

​The Moment of Decision

​The American officer said to me: “We have to fall back. But he can’t move at our pace. We need to decide.”

​I could see the pain in that officer’s eyes. I knew exactly what he was thinking. But I couldn’t leave that soldier behind either. He’d only been in Afghanistan a few months. He had a newborn child waiting for him at home.

​I told the Captain firmly: “Captain, see that high ground? Get your team there. Call it in from that position, and lay down cover fire for us. I’ll stay with him. Go — get support.”

​The Captain looked at me for a moment, then said, firmly: “Copy that.”

​At that moment, he and the rest of the team moved toward the high ground. The American soldier and I were left alone in that small position.

​Alone in the Dark

​The Captain and the rest of the team fell back. The soldier and I were left alone. The enemy kept closing in. I fired what was left of my ammunition at them. He, despite the pain, helped me with a will that was almost unbelievable.

​For nearly three hours, we held that small position. My contact with the Captain had cut out, but I knew he’d made it to the high ground and was doing his part.

​Our ammunition ran out. All I had left was a knife and a rock. He was using his hand to try to control the bleeding.

​In those moments, I understood a lot of things. I understood that courage means staying, even when everything is against you. I understood that humanity means thinking of someone else, even when your own life is on the line. And I understood that brotherhood means never leaving anyone behind.

​Jets Roaring Through the Dark Sky

​It was close to two in the morning when we heard the roar of F-16s overhead. With precision, they located the enemy positions and unleashed heavy fire on them. Explosions filled the air. The enemy, unable to withstand the air support, scattered quickly and retreated.

​Not long after, we heard the sound of helicopters. I looked up at the sky — Black Hawks, circling above us in the darkness, slowly descending toward the ground. With the crew’s help, the soldier and I climbed aboard with everything we had left, and we got out of that area.

​When the helicopter landed back at base, the Captain ran up to me and pulled me into a tight hug. He said: “Brother, you’re insane. But you’re my real brother.”

​I laughed — exhausted, wounded, but alive. The American soldier, smiling, was carried off by the medical crew.

​That night, I made a decision that has stayed with me ever since: the decision to stay. The decision to stand by a brother. The decision to remain human. Just as the Captain had said: “Copy that.” And just as we’d planned, we were extracted by Black Hawk helicopters.

​The Truth That Remains Today

​We sat together at night, drank tea, talked about our families, and prayed for one another. I didn’t think about him being American, and he didn’t think about me being Afghan. We were just brothers fighting for a common cause; just as a family stands together, we stood by each other.

A PROMISE UNDER THE LIGHT OF THE FIRE

​Today, when I think of that cold winter night, and the brotherhood that was shaped in that base, I miss those days—days when we were neither American nor Afghan; we were just humans, just brothers, just a big family in the heart of a military base.

​But today, the US government—the very government whose soldiers were our brothers—calls us strangers; looking at us as victims pitted against one another. I never thought that one day, those who fought with us, laughed with us, cried with us, and entrusted their letters to us, would be abandoned like this by their country’s government.

​I don’t know where that soldier, who entrusted his letter to me that night, is today. But I know that at that moment, he considered me his brother. I will never forget that brotherhood. But his country’s government, whose soldiers were once our allies, has abandoned us today—an abandonment I never could have imagined, even in the darkest nights of our operations.

We all watched, half amused, half in disbelief. He worked with total seriousness, as if he were carrying out the most important mission of his life.

After a few hours of effort, he finally got the fire going. He laid a few pieces of meat on it, borrowed from the base kitchen. Thick smoke rose and filled the whole camp. He announced proudly: “This is real Texas barbecue!”

But when he flipped the meat, we saw it was completely burnt, black all the way through. With a face that was equal parts embarrassed and hilarious, he said: “Well... that’s how they like it in Texas!”

All of us — including him — burst out laughing. Even one of the senior officers, who usually kept a stern face, couldn’t hold it in. In that moment, every ounce of tension from the past few days disappeared. There was only laughter — laughter loud enough to shake the walls of the base.

The Night No One Could Stop Laughing

After the failed barbecue, someone suggested everyone sing whatever song they knew best. One of the American soldiers started belting out a country song, completely off rhythm. Then it was an Afghan soldier’s turn, who sang a local folk song with a voice so beautiful that everyone fell silent.

But the best moment came when an American soldier, who didn’t speak a word of Farsi, tried to sing a Farsi song with completely mangled pronunciation. The result was something none of us could stop laughing at. He laughed right along with us and said: “This isn’t Farsi! This is a brand-new language I just invented!”

That night, in a corner of Afghanistan, far from home and family, we laughed together. People from different cultures, different languages, different faiths — but in that moment, we were all one family.

And his government — the same government whose soldiers laughed beside us that day — now calls us strangers, casting us as adversaries against one another.

How is it possible that people who once laughed together are now torn apart, one of them forgotten by the other’s government? How is it possible that people who once gathered around a fire at night, singing, are now sitting in the dark, asking: why did you leave us behind?
