Getting to create a poster for one of my favorite bands of the last 20 years when they came to my old stomping grounds on August 15 was met with an explosion of inspiration, nostalgia and made me think, what is the poster I would want to buy if I was at this show. At the beginning I knew I didn’t want to do another generic casino or gambling poster. To be honest, I’m not a big fan. I got working with the local icon, Lucy the Elephant and mashed in some of Stoopid’s smoking skull branding as well as their surf culture vibe. Add some psychedelia and voila. I had a rough concept sketch done within the hour of getting the gig.

APs of this poster will drop Today, August 15, at 3pm EST. All poster have a bonus layer with glow in the dark ink that pop under a black light but will keep shining when the lights go out. This winter I took a road trip up to Long Island to visit a friend and on the way I observed an area near this venue. What a weird industrial view along the north end of the Jersey shore. It got me thinking about how different it was from where I grew up just a couple hours south. The brainstorming for this poster began. At the end of February I took a trip down to Costa Rica as I frequently do to get ready for the year. One evening in an elevated state during sunset, thousands of hermit crabs came out of hiding for their nightly forage. During the many times I had visited this pocket of paradise, I had never observed such an event and it caught my undivided attention. Their temporary homes were all shapes and sizes with barnacles and other unique growth on them. It never really dawned on me that this was how they existed outside of the little scammy cages and painted shells on the boardwalk. The next morning as I reflected on the previous day, that short period of time stood out and the concept was clear.

This one was fun to work on. An alchemist wizard was the first thing that came to mind when I was contacted by the band’s team for this. Leaning into the gold element by using metallic inks definitely put a little extra sauce on it.

Billy Strings sold out Union Craft Brewing in under 2 weeks after tickets went on sale back in 2018. It was the first concert at the iconic Baltimore brewery’s new and current location. Because I slept on picking up tickets, a plan was put into place to do a special poster for the occasion. Artists will usually get extra compensation with tickets to the show as a bonus when doing prints for bands we work with. The scheme worked and the poster sold out as quick as they could ring them up. Little did anyone know Billy would break the bluegrass ceiling and skyrocket to stardom a few years later. Now considered a grail amongst collectors, its incredibly difficult to come across one of the 100 show editions or 32 artist copies that were released.

I look forward to a beautiful day painting live from Noon-10pm at Music City Bluegrass and Roots festival. This is a little different from my poster work. It gives me a deeper connection to the music where I can vibe with the bands in the moment and let whatever I feel flow out. There are no parameters or expectations. The live atmosphere gives me an anchor to grab onto and help me focus. I’ve enjoyed it immensely over the past couple years. After the event, I will sit with the piece in my studio until I feel its ready to be released.

The Vortex team put together a fun lineup for this years event. Headlining the event are my old friends Kitchen Dwellers out of Montana. This string quartet brings a psychedelic grunge vibe to bluegrass and are one of my favorites on the scene. They have strong support with Magoo who have been making waves out of Colorado. It will be my first time seeing this band but I love what I have heard from them so far.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong 8x10- This is another special one. Those who have known me a while know Pigeons are the first band I did a gig poster for at the 8x10 15 years ago. That was none of those life changing nights. With the impending closure of the 8x10, the band played a final show on 5/3 and I wanted to do some thing to commemorate it. This 3 color 8x10 print has a few references to lore from over the years. There will a White Swirl variant as well as the show AP.

This past weekend Widespread Panic played their annual shows at St. Augustine Amphitheatre in Florida. I’ve been hearing about this place for years now and need to check it out sometime soon. Back in 2007 before getting into Salisbury University to study graphic design and illustration, I applied to a small private school in St. Augustine called Flagler. All I really wanted to do was be at the beach and surf because it’s been my main source of inspiration my entire life. That didn’t work out because of my weak portfolio at the time but as they say, everything happens for a reason. No complaints.

As a surfer and being that the shows were in Florida, I thought what causes more panic in the water than a big ass shark? This one plays with intricate, psychedelic detail in the sharks body as well as the reefs in the foreground and background. If you look you’ll see a note eater overtaken by coral. I went with another long oriented poster because the layout is fun to work with and the band’s team is wide open creatively. This one is 12x36 and 6 colors. Less than 50 of each variation will be available. Paper APs will be $75 and moon lava foil $100. There is free domestic shipping on all orders so no need to add any during the checkout process. On August 9, 1995, I was sitting on the living room floor of the house I grew up in. Across the street, my neighbor, who owned the hippie store in town, flew a flag with a seemingly familiar skull at half-staff. Jerry Garcia had passed. My mother put a CD in the stereo, and Phil Lesh’s voice filled the room. It was at that point where the Grateful Dead entered my awareness. "Look out of any window" a simple lyric subconsciously became the way I moved through life. I still remember it with a clarity I can't quite explain.

Art and music became a big part of my childhood. While in school, I would daydream out the window, disassociating from the box that bound me. I observed my father, an artist and my earliest influence, create work in his studio that resembled Jerry. The studio became a sanctuary. Hours would disappear inside it with his music collection playing, doodling or zoning out to Windows Media Player. American Beauty had been played more times than I could count. At some point during this time, the Grateful Dead became a part of my foundation.

The inspiration of my new art print "The Box" captures that experience. The song, the memory, and the pursuit of life and imagination beyond the walls that surround you.”
