There may be an important shift happening here. Theaters need films, filmmakers need screens, and audiences increasingly need a reason to leave home. That creates an opportunity for independent filmmakers who can connect those three pieces.

The encouraging part isn’t simply that AMC is starting a distribution company or that Fathom can put an independent movie into theaters. It’s that the distance between filmmaker and exhibitor appears to be getting shorter. And Pools reminds us what can happen when filmmakers meet that opportunity halfway, bringing not only the movie, but the imagination and energy necessary to turn a screening into an event.

Once production wraps, it can feel like the hard part is over. In many ways, though, this is where the movie truly becomes the movie, and where the decisions you make can determine not only its creative quality, but its ability to reach an audience.

Post-production is much more than editing. It’s the combination of picture, music, sound, color, visual effects, titles, deliverables, marketing assets, partnerships, AND the people responsible for bringing all of those elements together. Each decision affects the finished film, but also your budget, timeline, positioning, and release strategy.

Post production will dictate where you can release. If you don’t plan enough ahead for post you will be cutting your legs off so to speak. Even an impeccably shot film, if post produced inadequately, will eliminate a lot of release avenues.

And in a NonDē model, post-production shouldn’t happen inside a vacuum. The audience and partnership work you began during development and production should keep moving forward. As the film takes shape, you have new materials to share, new collaborators to engage, and a clearer sense of what the film actually is, and who is most likely to care about it.

So before racing toward picture lock, ask another 10 questions.

1. Who are the essential members of my post-production team?

The right editor, sound team, composer, colorist, VFX artists, post supervisor, and producers can fundamentally change the finished film. Decide where experience and specialization will create the greatest value, what can reasonably be handled internally, and where cutting costs could ultimately cost the film more. Just as you built the production team intentionally, assemble post around the specific needs of this movie. And though it’s possible for someone to jump ship for personal matters or a bigger payday, do your very best to bring on those who really get it, seem committed to the project and your vision. Who can you count on?

Figuring out your priorities is key here especially on a small budget. Sound should always be top of the list. This is the single most noticeable thing for an audience to tell the quality of a film and also to sustain the suspension of disbelief and keep your audience attached to the viewing experience of your film.

2. What does the edit need to accomplish beyond simply telling the story?

Editing is where the film is rewritten for the final time. Beyond continuity and pacing, ask whether the cut delivers the emotion, tone, genre expectations, and audience experience you originally intended. Screen versions early enough to learn something from them, and distinguish between feedback that identifies a genuine problem and feedback that simply reflects someone else’s taste. Plan survey screenings along the way, targeting different audience categories.

Here’s one way to accomplish the “how” of all the above, from Shawna Caroll.

Consider this advice, direct from Shawna Carroll:

“Whatever you can eliminate from the dialogue, you should. Oftentimes the biggest dead give away of a small budget film is they are too attached to the dialogue they wrote and the performance that they felt on set, but once you get into post all of that internal work from the filmmaker is not present. So learning to let go of that and analyze what can be inferred by the audience, getting out of the scene as fast as possible and getting into it as late as possible are all key ways to maintain an audience’s attention. [It’ll] keep them asking questions and wanting to know what happens next.”

3. What role should music play, and what can I realistically afford?

Music can dramatically elevate a film, but it can also become an unexpected cost center. Decide whether the movie needs an original score, licensed songs, emerging artists, library music, or some combination. Think beyond the soundtrack itself: musicians and labels can also become promotional partners, bringing their own communities into the ecosystem around the film. But yes, avoid popular songs, unless they’re in public domain and you can get them covered inexpensively.

Music Supervisors can be a huge help here. Curating music cues from a cheap library can be cheaper than paying for original composed music. They also specialize in music selection and can avoid newbie mistakes with “being on the nose” with cues and knowing when to refrain from playing music as well.

Your edit should work without any music at all. If you’re relying on music to maintain attention then you have an edit problem not a music problem.

4. How much can sound and color increase the perceived value of the film?

Audiences will often forgive an imperfect image before they forgive poor sound. Dialogue editing, ADR, Foley, sound design, ambience, and the final mix can make a modestly budgeted film feel significantly larger and more polished. Determine what your film actually requires and protect enough resources to finish the sound properly rather than treating it as an afterthought. And this “mix” usually takes longer than filmmakers think it will.

Color correction, grading, cleanup, compositing, and VFX can transform production footage, but not every shot needs expensive treatment. Identify the moments where additional polish meaningfully improves storytelling or perceived production value. The goal isn’t to add effects because you can; it’s to spend where the audience will actually feel the difference.

Unless you have a huge budget you should avoid VFX as much as possible. To do it well, in a way that feels authentic and maintains suspension of disbelief, is very expensive. So keep that stuff out of frame and use the budget for sound/color. Second to good sound, color is the next thing you should invest in. A good grade can take so-so imagery and elevate it to a level that will help the audience stay connected to the story of the film.

5. What audience feedback do I need before I lock the film?

There is a point when feedback is invaluable and another when it becomes noise (see survey point above). Decide who needs to see the film before picture lock: trusted filmmakers, people who resemble your intended audience, subject-matter experts, or small test-screening groups. Ask specific questions rather than simply, “Did you like it?” You are looking for patterns that help you make decisions without surrendering authorship. And the most important question: Would they recommend it to a friend?

And one trick to making sure the feedback you’re getting speaks to your own vision: look for the note behind the note. Often folks don’t necessarily know how to give expert feedback, so they’ll say something like “try this!” or “try that!” and while sometimes those can be verifiably good ideas, sometimes they’re not. But they point to something that either isn’t working, isn’t clear, or you need to double down on. Look for the note behind every note, and use that to guide your edits.

Ask yourself “What do I want them talking about when they leave the screening?” before getting audience feedback. Compare that with the actual audience feedback you get and see if your intention is aligning with the actual outcome.

6. Which partnerships should become active now that I can show people the film?

Production may have opened doors, but a strong cut gives prospective partners something tangible to respond to. Reconnect with organizations, brands, nonprofits, community groups, businesses, influencers, and other partners aligned with the film. A teaser, scene, rough cut, or private screening can turn an abstract conversation into a concrete collaboration, and give those partners time to participate in the eventual release.

And what’s more, use these test screenings to fundraise. Why not?! Every part of production can satisfy at least two goals at once. So how can you use your post-production time as a way to fundraise, market, or deepen the relationships you established earlier? Invite the right partners into this part and maximize your possibilities. Use this time to build on what’s already there to push you to the next phase of the process.

Post is also a great time to start posting on social media about your whole process. BTS or Before/After always do a great job at bringing awareness and attention to you as a filmmaker and to your film.

7. What marketing materials should come out of post-production?

Don’t finish the film and then discover you have nothing to market it with. Build trailers, teasers, stills, key art, vertical clips, cast and filmmaker interviews, behind-the-scenes pieces, social assets, press materials, and other campaign elements into the post schedule. Consider grabbing after-screening reactions from test screenings for some of your first pull quotes or social videos to drum up excitement for the release. One edit can often generate dozens of assets if you plan for them early. Social media needs to be a healthy part of the mix. And make sure to organize all of these things so links and files are easy to share.

And remember to think outside of the box. Trailers alone are almost never going to sell seats to your film, especially if they’re small budget films. So instead focus on whatever unique aspect of your process you have and lean into that. Is this your first film? Is there something unique about your story that you can connect to present day events?

8. What version of the film do I need for each part of my release strategy?

A festival submission, theatrical screening, community event, educational license, airline version, television delivery, and digital platforms may all have different technical and editorial requirements. Think ahead about captions, subtitles, music clearances, credits, artwork, masters, DCPs, closed-caption files, legal documentation, and other deliverables. Knowing where the film is going can prevent expensive rebuilding later.

And PS. don’t forget to budget for QC costs. Or to make sure that that is part of any deal you make so you don’t have to cover those costs.

9. What potential revenue streams are emerging, and who needs to be brought into the mix now?

As the film takes shape, you should have a much clearer idea of what you actually have, and that may reveal revenue opportunities you couldn’t see during development. Beyond traditional distribution, consider theatrical and event screenings, direct digital sales, educational and community licensing, brand partnerships, sponsorships, merchandise, music, special experiences, and other opportunities specific to your film and its audience.

In person screenings are finding a resurgence in small theaters. Find ways to have the audience join the experience and build word of mouth.

Then work backward from each potential revenue stream: What buttons need to be pushed, and who needs to be involved to make it happen?

Some of those relationships may already exist. If so, now is the time to bring those partners up to date, show them what you’ve created, and give them a reason to re-engage. Others may need to be added to the mix,sales and NonDē distribution partners, exhibitors, community organizations, brands, educators, musicians, influencers, local businesses, or people with direct access to the audiences you’re trying to reach.

Post-production shouldn’t just bring the film closer to completion. It should bring the business and audience ecosystem around the film closer to activation. The goal is to arrive at release with more than a finished movie, you want relationships, revenue opportunities, and partners already in motion. Post is where the film is actually made, all the pieces come together for a finished ready to present film.

10. When is the film actually finished—and am I ready to turn attention toward release?

Perfection can become another form of dependence. There will always be another shot to tweak, another sound to adjust, or another version of the trailer to make. Establish what “finished” means for this project and what must be true before resources shift from making the movie to bringing people to it. Fellini once said “The movie is finished when the money runs out”.

Post-Production will often last 10 times longer than you ever thought it would. It will often reveal things you never even thought about until they become an issue. It’s important to go into it with the right mindset. Many things can be discouraging through the whole process, but figuring out what “done” looks like before you start will set you up for success. Knowing what the finish line looks like helps you get there.

The underlying principle:

Post-production is not simply the stage where you finish the film.

It’s the stage where the film, the team, the audience, and the release strategy begin to converge.

A strong finished movie matters enormously, but a finished movie sitting on a hard drive has no audience. The goal is to emerge from post not only with the best film you can make, but with the materials, relationships, and momentum necessary to put that film into the world.

Bonus Question: What Merchandising should you consider for your project? You may not have Hundreds of Beavers costumes, but you may have something. Beyond the standard t-shirt, hat and hoody, others? Art. Stickers? Prop copies?

There are shortcuts in both work and life, but they rarely produce the same rewards as doing the work. Don’t take the easy out. That applies to the films we make, the knowledge we acquire, and especially the relationships we build along the way. And invest sincerely in people rather than viewing relationships primarily through what they might provide. The payoff may not always be immediate, but the work, and the relationships that grow from it, can become the foundation for everything that follows.
