Vish, here— Producer of OTR— and I’m incredibly proud of the diversity of episodes that we’ve released over these first 10 weeks. From the start, our north star has been to connect climate change to the topics that people naturally care about and gravitate towards in the hopes that we can break out of this communications bubble that climate seems to be stuck in. But anyone who’s built anything knows— ideas are cute and fun, but execution is where the real challenge begins.

And right now that star still looks very (very) distant, but I think we’ve taken a strong first few steps by touching on topics from film-making, to investing, to wineries, to journalism, to geopolitics. And we’ve also learned so much (sooo much) about what we want to do, what we don’t want to do, and what we maybe want to do… but not just yet (looking at you instagram account and highly produced explainer videos with beautiful diagrams & animations).

I’ve certainly learned something (if not multiple somethings) with each new episode we release. And this week, today, this episode, is no different— except it is…

Because its the first episode that I’m actually nervous about releasing.

And don’t get me wrong, its not because its bad— in fact Marcius has a really fascinating conversation with Allyson Anderson-Book, the Chief Sustainability Officer for Baker Hughes, a company that provides equipment and services to the oil and gas industry. They discuss the current energy system and the intricacies of the oil & gas world. They delve into energy transitions and different possible futures for the global energy mix. Even for me, as someone who’s doing a PhD in the sustainability space, there was plenty of interesting information and new perspectives (Watch it here).

I think this nervous energy is actually the result of this interview being the first one we’re releasing where the guest has and verbalizes (at times) a POV on energy & climate that I strongly disagree with. And there’s a certain discomfort that comes with releasing or sharing a perspective that contradicts my own.

However, our primary goal with this podcast— and I’ll speak for Marcius here as well— is never to only disseminate our personal philosophies about solving climate change. It’s always about exposing people to true breadth of impacts, people and perspectives that exist in this space so that our audience can create their own philosophies about climate change.

In fact, we believe that two of the keys for solving climate change are 1) helping people care about climate change enough to develop a strong POV that can create disagreements, and 2) creating spaces where those disagreements can be discussed and dissected in good faith.

So, hosting thoughtful guests with wildly different perspectives to have constructive disagreements is really at the core of why we created On The Rise. The nerves are still here, but I think this is a healthy sign that the show is growing. And to that end, I hope it’s not the last time I feel this way on release day!

Some of you absolutely loved hearing Ashley Botting explore comedy & climate in a more entertaining and down-to-earth way in episodes 1 and 2. Others connected with the scientific and philosophical conversation with Tom Chi about investing, capital, and building the long-term discipline of climate solutions in a rigorous way in episodes 3 and 4. This eclectic approach is intentional. It’s a reflection of two core beliefs: climate risk and climate solutions conversations can be for anyone, and; broadening the conversation to include different walks of life or areas of work or study helps us all go further faster. More is more. That is a signal we will keep amplifying as we go, especially in this time of geopolitical churn and media noise.
