This newsletter is different in that we are announcing a new platform in addition to our existing Substack platform. The company has gone through two main phases. You may have seen it start to develop over the last year or so, but we are thrilled to share publicly that we are in the process of building Orb 3.0

What does this mean right now?

While we finish building Orb 3.0, Orb Analytics Limited will be under construction throughout the 2026-2027 NFL season. We are focusing more time on the platform build while also restructuring the weekly content we have historically sent out. This allows our company to live test new and existing automation modeling and record tracking in the new Orb 3.0 platform.

Where can I find the Orb’s NFL picks?

We are going to have our three automated models running on the Orb 3.0 platform on a daily basis (during their respective seasons), where you can go and see a living, breathing version of the Orb and the predictions we give out across the professional sports calendar. This will restructure our current weekly content that goes stale or can get lost in your inbox.

For NFL picks specifically, there will be an overlap period where we will ensure all readers still get to see our weekly picks and results, whether here on Substack or on our new platform.

What does this mean for paid readers?

The site will start out completely free, meaning no premium content behind a paywall. We are pausing all payments while we build 3.0, and we are refunding the 2026-2027 NFL season. While future scheduled payments will not go through and you have nothing to worry about, we will also be reaching out to all of our paid subscribers individually via email to help refund you for any recent automatic payments. Any payment that was made after July 1st, 2026 is eligible to be fully refunded, and we ask that you work with us to do so by September 9th, 2026 so we can all focus on a new season of NFL football!

Our Substack isn’t going anywhere, just how and when we use it will change.

When we shared it here on July 1st, I talked about how current results were unsustainable over a larger sample, but that didn’t mean the model couldn’t continue to profit. Since July 2nd, the model has gone a much more modest 33-35, +1.77 units, +2.60% ROI. While I always wish for a higher return, making any amount of profit in sports gambling is always a win and against the odds. These last two weeks are also a perfect real-world example of how a model can continue to win money, but at a more realistic rate that actually lowers ROI from previous performance.

Orb Model Playoff Push!

With the MLB All-Star break wrapping up, we can’t wait to monitor how the model performs in the second half of the season. 136 picks is still a very small sample size in the grand scheme of modeling, so I am curious to see how our performance by pick type changes. As you can see above, the model has done exceptionally well when picking away teams (+21.06 units), but is struggling when picking home teams (-5.31 units). It has been profitable across both the favorite and underdog class, but has nearly double the return when predicting teams at +money odds. One level deeper, it makes perfect sense why its overall best pick type is underdogs on the road. In the extremely small sample so far, our model is 16-9, 64%, +15.15 on these predictions.

Of course, we hope to see the model continue to make money for our readers, but continue to emphasize that past performance is not a promise of future results. Our goal in this game is to use the power of predictive models to identify edges in betting markets. The goal is NOT to win every pick, as nice as that would be to do. If it were, no one could play. The process that won 72 moneyline picks so far and is +15.75 units is the same process that lost 64 picks to date.

This MLB model was a long time coming for us, and I cannot go any further without publicly recognizing and celebrating the amazing work of . What started with a fun and natural next step of wanting to predict baseball games has turned into our most complex modeling system yet. He worked tirelessly for months, building a powerful training dataset with over 150 predictors dating back to the 2009 season, as well as an intricate daily API feed to match. About The MLB Model ⚾ 🤖

Every sport and associated gambling market is unique. Rather than try to fit one strategy to all our models across different sports, we believe in fitting our strategy to the sport and its data. If you have followed us from the start of this project and thought the NFL and NBA were unpredictable, get ready to learn the true meaning of chaos with the MLB. There is a reason this sport needs 162 regular-season games to separate contenders from pretenders. Baseball is inherently random game to game, with starting pitching rotations and a single swing sometimes deciding the outcome. But bats going hot and cold wasn’t enough to deter us from trying to predict the chaos, and potentially could help give us an edge over the daily betting markets.

Baseball markets are fundamentally different from what we are used to in the NFL and NBA. For those sports, the spread is a dynamic number that moves while prices typically stay consistent (within a given range). Here in the MLB, the spread stays consistent, always at 1.5, while the price can vary dramatically. This often leads to the inverse of what we have grown used to, where the moneyline prices in baseball more closely resemble the spread prices in the other two sports, like in the example below:

For this reason, and in line with our general modeling philosophy, we designed this model to be a moneyline predictor and focus on who is going to win the game, rather than by how many runs. But we haven’t forgotten the game we’re playing, and of course incorporate market data into the equation.

Using our most complete and powerful dataset yet, we were able to fit our most promising model to date. In fact, the model showed so much promise of predictive power throughout backtesting that every attempt to blend it with additional model types only hurt performance. So as far as the accuracy metrics and controlled testing were concerned, we somehow struck gold on our first attempt, a record for the Orb Project that I can’t imagine we pull off again.

I always believe in being transparent about our strategy so our readers know exactly what goes into every pick they see on this page. Rather than type out line by line how we get from a raw classification win probability to the pick that is delivered to your inbox, I had our good friend Claude break down our MLB modeling strategy and backtesting results:

Live Results To-Date

As always, you should take backtesting results with a grain of salt. The real question is how the model performs live, so that is exactly what we asked. On 6/22/26, we turned this thing on and started emailing out daily picks to a small group for QA assurance. Rather than accuracy, the main thing we focused on was the system’s tracking record, as this was the biggest issue with our automated NBA model.

Since going live, the MLB model has been nothing short of “on fire.” As of the time I am writing this, it has made 53 moneyline predictions, going 31-22, 58.5%, +12.65 units for an ROI of +23.9%:

Of course, this is over a relatively small and statistically insignificant sample size. Still, it is quite encouraging and within the ballpark of the ROI seen in backtesting results. As always, I should remind you that past performance is not a promise of future results when it comes to predictive models. The model’s current 84.6% accuracy when picking away teams, as well as its record above 50% when picking +money underdogs, are not exactly guaranteed to continue. In fact, and in line with every previous model we’ve released, the only thing that I can guarantee is that this one also will miss picks, will not go 100%, and may even lose units from here on out! But early results resemble backtesting and model accuracy numbers, which is as promising as it can be at this stage.

Post Go-Live

This is our second time building a fully autonomous modeling system. Results so far have been great, but of course are not in our control. What is in our control is continuing to improve the system around the machine that makes the actual predictions. The tracking of results by pick type has matched up perfectly since going live on the 22nd. However, improvement does not mean perfection. We still expect bugs to pop up and would love feedback from you when they do! Again, a missed pick, a losing stretch, or even losing all the units it has won so far is unfortunately not a bug to report.

We will monitor the system internally and try to respond to any issues we notice or ones that are brought to our attention as quickly as possible.

2026 NBA Model Season Recap!

For roughly half of NBA fans, the end of the regular season means it’s time to gear up for the playoffs. For us here at Orb Analytics, it means it’s time to review our model’s performance this season! Like our NFL model, this model is built for the regular season, although we will be monitoring it internally throughout the playoffs to see how it performs with repetitive matchups and markets.

We built and internally tested the model during the first half of the season, and released it live to our readers on January 20th, nearly halfway through the season. It is our first fully automated model, meaning it came with new functionality, bugs, and everything in between. We certainly saw some of these bugs pop up along the way, and want to thank each and every one of our readers who helped alert us to them so we can continue to improve the system.

The main issues we ran into were misclassification of result types, which impacted our live performance tracking, but had no impact on the actual picks and unit winnings themselves. So the results below are confirmed by a manual audit of every pick of every email that the model sent out since January 20th.

Just building and releasing our first self-running model was a huge win for us, but its actual performance against the spread was an even bigger one! There are so many positives, but also a few negatives to break down from the debut season of the Orb NBA model on our official record.

A huge shoutout to our up-and-coming star here at Orb Analytics, , for all of his work on this project.

Model Performance - High Level

The model gave out 199 spread picks since January 20th, all sent directly to the inbox of readers who signed up, completely for free. As you can see in the dashboard and graph above, it performed incredibly well, going 107-92, 53.8% ATS and returning +12.1 units of profit for an ROI of +6.1%.

This is a fantastic start for the model and everyone who followed it this season. It now heads into next NBA season up double-digit units and will look to add more to its record.

Model Performance - Under the Hood

Overall performance is great and tells the overarching story of winning or losing, but breaking down further is where we really get to nerd out. With favorite/underdog and home/away splits, we can take a deeper look at model performance by pick type.

So the model performed best picking underdogs and picking home teams. We can see this play out even further by breaking down all four combinations of the different class types:

Underdog at Home: 33-25, 56.9%, +7.12u, +12.3% ROI
Favorite at Home: 18-15, 54.5%, +3.06u, +9.3% ROI
Underdog on Road: 31-26, 54.4%, +4.04u, +7.1% ROI
Favorite on Road: 25-26, 49.0%, -2.08u, -4.1% ROI

While we achieved our biggest and most difficult goal of the model being profitable overall, these more granular breakdowns can reveal valuable performance insights. Models that are negative overall can still be extremely accurate at identifying one type of bet, so always make sure to look under the hood of your results. Our model being profitable in 3/4 of the possible bet types is a massive win this season!

Price, Price, Price!

The model’s output is only part of the equation. Betting on the spread means that you are playing in a market, and the name of the game is price. As a reminder, our strategy for the model was to use our own derived cover probability to identify edges over the betting market. We only gave out picks with a +3% or higher calculated edge.

By playing on a sharper market on Novig, we were able to reduce our average bet price to roughly -102. That converts to an implied probability of 50.5%, meaning that was our model’s breakeven accuracy. Big sportsbooks offer the standard average spread price of -110, which converts to a 52.38% breakeven accuracy. So with an accuracy of 53.8%, our model was still profitable against the standard vig (and even up to an average price of -116.4), but this would have left winnings on the table.

Thanks to more efficient markets, the model identified and made 90 spread picks of +100 or better odds, going 41-49, 45.6% on the +money plays. It went 66-43, 60.6% on its -money predictions.

So, should you always pick the side with the better price? Of course not! Remember:

Calculated Edge = model_probability - market_probability (price)

For example, on February 22nd, the 76ers were playing in Minnesota as +9.5 point underdogs. The price for that bet was -121 (scary!) which converts to an implied probability and breakeven accuracy of 54.75%. However, our model gave them a 60.1% probability to cover that number, which is still a +5.4% edge over that market:

They went on the win the game 135-108.

The biggest win of the season came on March 20th, when the model identified an edge on the Memphis Grizzlies getting 14.5 points at home to the Boston Celtics. It was priced at +112 odds, converting to just a 47.17% breakeven accuracy. Even though the model barely gave them above a coin flip’s chance to cover, this was a +3.7% edge over that market price:

They went on to lose 117-112 but covered the +14.5.

Areas for Improvement

As mentioned at the start of the recap, there are some areas for improvement. And they almost all have to do with misclassifications and automated record-keeping. If I could only have one of the actual performance side or the record-keeping side of a model perform well, it isn’t even a question of which I would choose. But we are all about transparency here at Orb Analytics, and that includes highlighting the negatives in an overwhelmingly positive season.

So moving forward, this is an area we are continuing to improve, as the breakdown of results is very important internally and to our readers.
