LONDON — A leading mining conference has invited an independent industry expert to purchase the right to be formally recognised as an independent industry expert, with speaking packages beginning at £18,000 plus VAT.

The invitation praised the consultant’s “fresh perspective” and “important contribution to the future of mining” before clarifying that neither would be permitted near a microphone until payment had cleared.

“This is not pay-to-speak,” said conference director Claudia Venues. “It is an investment in being listened to.”

Venues said mining urgently needed more unconventional voices as it confronted the energy transition, public scepticism and growing pressure to adapt to a rapidly changing world.

“We cannot solve tomorrow’s problems using yesterday’s thinking,” she said. “Tomorrow’s thinking must, however, come through the appropriate sponsorship channels.”

She confirmed that lateral ideas, constructive criticism and people from outside traditional mining circles would be warmly embraced, “Provided they have a marketing budget.”

The independent consultant, whose clients normally pay him to develop and communicate the insights requested by the conference, said he was initially confused by the offer, but then understood.

“For years, people have been paying me for my ideas,” he said. “Looking back, that was probably holding me back.”

He described the sacrifice as “strangely liberating.”

“There’s something very peaceful about torching 40% of your annual income to give away the commercial value of ideas people normally pay you for,” he said. “It just feels ethical.”

Under the entry-level Thought Leadership Package, he will receive a seat on a six-person panel and approximately seven minutes of microphone access.

Two minutes are reserved for the moderator explaining who he is, equating to around £3,600 per minute of actual speaker talk time.

For an additional £4,000, he can upgrade to Global Authority status, which includes a photograph beside the conference logo and the right to be described as “renowned” by somebody who met him nine minutes earlier.

The consultant said he had previously made the mistake of assuming that revenue was supposed to move towards a business.

“The conference has really challenged my thinking on that,” he said. “Once you stop thinking of £18,000 as money, the opportunity becomes much clearer.”

Venues agreed, adding that said speakers frequently focused too heavily on the amount leaving their bank accounts.

“They rarely consider the unlimited theoretical revenue that may eventually return,” she said. “Whilst we cannot guarantee a financial return for the speakers, we are pleased to confirm that the £18,000 will definitely not return.”

Organisers stressed that speaking at the event could lead to new clients, commercial relationships, and future paid work, providing the same expertise the consultant had just paid to deliver for free.

“In effect, he is investing in the chance to recover the cost of investing in the chance,” Venues said. “If that’s not commercial maturity, it is at least the kind of circular economy mining has been promising for years.”

Delegates will also pay more than £1,450 to enter the venue. Exhibitors will pay for floor space, sponsors will pay for credibility, speakers will pay to speak, and panel chairs will pay to ask other paying speakers questions.

The summit describes this as “networking liquidity.”

“Our role is to bring the entire mining ecosystem together,” Venues explained. “Without us, these people might be forced to meet freely in pubs, hotel lobbies or other completely unmonetised environments.”

A platinum sponsor defended the model.

“High fees ensure the room contains serious people,” said executive vice-president Martin Shaft. “Otherwise you run the risk of hearing from somebody simply because they know something.”

Organisers also rejected suggestions that charging five-figure sums might exclude precisely the independent thinkers mining says it urgently needs.

“We absolutely need independent voices,” Venues said. “But independence without a massive corporate marketing budget can be extremely difficult to verify.”

She acknowledged that people outside the established industry are less likely to have £18,000 available for seven minutes of microphone access.

“That is one of the fascinating structural barriers we are very excited to discuss.”

One independent engineer recently applied after developing an unconventional stakeholder-engagement technique involving asking local people what they thought before making decisions affecting them.

Unable to afford the £18,000 package, she was offered a specially discounted delegate pass for £1,445, reduced from £1,450.

Her place was awarded to the vice-president of a platinum sponsor, who will chair Why Mining Must Listen to Outsiders.

The conference will also host Breaking Down Barriers to Innovation, restricted to organisations that successfully completed the barrier.

Venues denied that the programme favoured wealthy incumbents.

“We do not select speakers according to wealth,” she said. “We select them according to sponsorship level, which is displayed in a completely different column.”

The final programme includes representatives from twelve mining corporations, four major consultancies and three people who recently left those corporations to establish consultancies.

People without substantial financial backing remain welcome to contribute by applauding.

The invited consultant ultimately decided not to purchase the Thought Leadership Package and instead arranged meetings in the pub opposite the venue.

Within two hours, he had three useful conversations, secured a client and heard an original idea.

He also spent £7.40 on a pint.

Conference organisers have since approached the pub about becoming the summit’s Official Independent Thinking Zone.

Packages start at £25,000.

TORONTO — The board of Northern Meridian Critical Minerals has rejected a financing package that could have reduced its annual interest bill by several million dollars after discovering that the arrangement required measurable improvements in the lives of people living near its mine.

The Toronto-listed company had been considering a Stakeholder Prosperity Bond to finance construction of its flagship Kambala copper project, a “world-class, generational, district-scale” asset that has remained approximately eighteen months from construction for the past nine years.

According to people familiar with the meeting, directors initially responded enthusiastically when advisers explained that the bond could provide cheaper capital, broaden the investor base, improve local infrastructure, reduce supply interruptions and strengthen community support for the project.

The mood reportedly changed when the board reached page two.

“We were very attracted to the lower coupon,” said Northern Meridian chief financial officer Trevor Basis. “Unfortunately, the structure also contained a number of highly unusual provisions involving accountability, independently verified outcomes and people.”

Basis confirmed that the bond would have required Northern Meridian to establish specific targets relating to local employment, water access, road improvements, workforce training and economic participation.

“Obviously, we support all those things,” he said. “But traditionally, our support has been aspirational.”

The company ultimately approved a more conventional $180 million financing package from Granite Peak Special Situations Fund at 17% interest, together with warrants, an offtake agreement, a 3.5% royalty, security over the project and first refusal on all future discoveries.

Granite Peak is led by private-credit executive Darren Rusk, who attended the board meeting in an open-necked shirt and described the terms as “founder-friendly.”

“The conventional facility was considerably more expensive,” said Northern Meridian chief executive Graham Vane. “But it offered something the Stakeholder Prosperity Bond could not: complete freedom to spend far more money fixing the problems created by not choosing it.”

Vane said the company had been concerned that the prosperity bond remained relatively new and untested.

“This is shareholders’ money,” he explained. “We cannot gamble it on some experimental structure just because it has a lower interest rate, stronger stakeholder alignment and a coherent theory of value creation.”

By contrast, he said, high-interest private debt, commodity streams, punitive royalties and emergency equity dilution have a long and distinguished history in mining.

“We know exactly how those instruments destroy value,” Vane said. “That gives us confidence.”

Independent verification raises alarm

Sources said the proposal suffered a further setback when directors learned that an outside organisation would verify whether Northern Meridian had achieved its stated social and economic outcomes.

The company’s head of sustainability, Simone Vale, reportedly attempted to reassure the board by explaining that Northern Meridian already had extensive experience measuring stakeholder engagement.

“We held 147 community meetings last year,” Vale told directors.

When asked whether the meetings had improved anything, Vale said this was not currently one of the meeting-related key performance indicators.

“Our existing framework measures the number of engagements, the number of attendees, the number of photographs taken and the percentage of photographs in which somebody appears to be listening,” she explained.

The proposed bond, however, would have assessed whether local conditions had materially improved.

This distinction was described in board minutes as “potentially destabilising.”

One director asked whether the independent verifier could instead confirm that Northern Meridian had made “reasonable efforts to create a roadmap toward exploring the possibility of future improvement.”

The adviser said it could not.

Another director proposed replacing the clean-water target with a commitment to publish a Clean Water Ambition Statement.

That proposal was also rejected.

“At that point, it became clear that the verifier had a very narrow and literal interpretation of prosperity,” Basis said.

The company’s lawyers were particularly concerned that the bond could establish a direct relationship between corporate commitments and observable reality.

“That is a dangerous precedent,” said senior counsel Hugh Perimeter. “If companies begin making promises that can later be checked, the implications for sustainability reporting are enormous.”

Executives warn of “functioning infrastructure risk”

Northern Meridian also identified serious risks associated with improving the main access road, which the company needs to transport fuel, equipment and personnel to the mine.

“The road would benefit us operationally,” said chief operating officer Brent Hoist. “Unfortunately, local people would also be able to use it.”

Hoist warned that a functioning road could reduce delays, community anger, security incidents and future blockades.

This, he said, would eliminate important opportunities for Northern Meridian to demonstrate crisis leadership.

“If nobody blocks the gate, how will investors know we are capable of reopening it?”

The company’s crisis adviser agreed, warning that stable community relations could reduce demand for emergency consultants, injunctions, security reviews, government mediation and stakeholder-recovery workshops.

“Once a problem has been prevented,” the adviser explained, “it becomes extremely difficult to invoice for solving it.”

Directors also concluded that community prosperity was too difficult to quantify.

Northern Meridian currently values its orebody using assumed future copper prices, inferred geological continuity, estimated recoveries and a processing method not yet tested at commercial scale.

However, determining whether local families had clean water was judged “unacceptably subjective.”

“We can confidently model copper production in 2049,” said chief geologist Malcolm Plunge. “But human wellbeing involves assumptions.”

The board requested the exact net present value of not being hated. When advisers could not provide a figure to two decimal places, the benefit was removed from the model.

Northern Meridian then spent $6.2 million on two investment banks, three law firms and a Big Four consultancy to determine whether it could justify saving approximately $3 million a year.

After fourteen months, the resulting 286-page report concluded that prosperity was “an important emerging conversation requiring further conversations.”

No local people were consulted, as this might have introduced stakeholder bias.

The board subsequently approved Darren’s 17% facility.

“The Stakeholder Prosperity Bond wanted measurable improvements in employment, infrastructure and local participation,” Vane said.

“Darren only wanted the mine if we miss two payments.”

Shares in a junior mining company rose sharply yesterday after the company announced that its new artificial intelligence platform had generated 14 drill targets, 9 strategic corridors, 6 mineralising vectors and no claims specific enough to be disproven by the next phase of exploration.

The market responded positively to the update, with investors praising the company’s successful transition from “geological uncertainty” to “a target-rich interpretive environment.”

“This is a major step forward for the project,” said CEO Trent Blockson, standing in front of a 3D model rotating with the solemn authority of a cathedral. “Previously, we had a property with several unresolved geological questions. We now have 14 ranked opportunities, each with its own colour, name and potential news release.”

The targets were classified as High Priority, Very High Priority, Transformational and Strategically Transformational, with no category available for “probably an artefact.”

According to the company, the AI platform reviewed historical drilling, airborne geophysics, regional structures, alteration maps, satellite imagery, legacy soil grids, three scanned government reports, two incomplete spreadsheets and a PDF labelled FINAL_MODEL_v7_ACTUAL_FINAL_USE_THIS_ONE.

The system then produced a heatmap containing several extremely serious colours, including orange, dark orange, red, darker red and a deep purple zone described by one analyst as “visibly institutional.”

“I remain cautious,” said mining investor Graham Ellesmere, who bought shares shortly after the presentation. “But when that red blob appeared under the old workings and then extended into a corridor, I did feel something. I am not saying it was evidence. But it was not nothing.”

Ellesmere admitted he did not fully understand the inversion methodology, but said the model’s opacity gave him confidence that people cleverer than him were probably involved.

“I always look for rigorous technical evidence before investing,” he said. “But there is a point where a cross-section rotates in 3D and you have to respect the process.”

The company was careful to stress that the AI had not discovered a deposit. Instead, it had identified “zones of enhanced prospective coherence consistent with mineralising conditions under a range of plausible deposit scenarios.”

Asked what this meant in normal language, Blockson said, “We are very excited.”

The AI provider, Quantum LithoVision Systems, rejected suggestions that the platform was simply producing attractive maps from messy junior mining data.

“Our model does not tell clients where to drill,” said Chief Interpretation Officer Melissa Fang. “It creates a probabilistic decision-support environment in which certain drill locations become increasingly difficult not to drill.”

Fang said the platform had been trained on geological expertise, proprietary datasets, historical discovery analogues and “the collective wisdom of exploration teams who, over many decades, have felt they were very close.”

Company materials describe the system as a multi-modal inference architecture capable of integrating geoscientific datasets across scale, discipline and confidence level. In practice, this means the platform can take a disappointing historical drill hole, combine it with a magnetic anomaly, apply a proprietary colour ramp and return something management can describe as a compelling target.

One person familiar with AI-assisted exploration described the process more directly.

“Sometimes a junior gives you bad data, pays you anyway, and the model still produces something beautiful,” he said. “It’s lipstick on a pig.”

Quantum LithoVision Systems rejected the analogy, noting that the pig had been independently georeferenced, interpolated and displayed using a defensible visualisation protocol.

“We do not apply lipstick,” Fang said. “We enhance subsurface interpretive attractiveness.”

The only awkward moment in the presentation came when an elderly conference attendee, later identified as Karl Popper, asked what observation would falsify the model. After a brief pause, Fang clarified that the platform was not designed around “old binary categories such as right and wrong,” but around a dynamic learning process in which successful drill results confirm the model’s predictive strength, while unsuccessful drill results provide valuable negative data to improve the next iteration.

Asked whether this meant every outcome ultimately supported further use of the model, Fang said this was a misunderstanding of probability, before confirming that additional drilling would be the most responsible next step.

The company’s first proposed hole will test Target Alpha, a 1.7 kilometre anomaly described as structurally prepared, geochemically encouraged and open in all directions except the direction of prior disappointment.

If Target Alpha fails to intersect mineralisation, the company said this would increase confidence in Target Alpha North, Target Alpha Deep and Target Alpha Offset, all of which were generated after management adjusted the transparency layer.

“Exploration is about learning,” Blockson said. “A miss is not necessarily a miss. Sometimes it is the edge of a system. Sometimes it is a vector. Sometimes it is a valuable reminder that the next hole is the important one.”

Investors were particularly encouraged by the number of targets, which many interpreted as evidence that the project now had more chances to become a discovery.

“Fourteen targets is a lot of targets,” said Ellesmere. “Obviously, I understand that the number of targets does not automatically increase geological validity. But also, fourteen is more than three.”

The company also announced nine strategic corridors linking areas of incomplete historical work with areas where the model suggested more work should be completed. These included the Northern Corridor, the Southern Corridor, the Deep Corridor, the Corridor Extension Corridor and the highly anticipated Corridor Nine, described in the presentation as “conceptual but encouraging.”

“Corridor Nine is the one I’m watching,” wrote one retail investor on a message board. “Nobody knows what it is yet, which means the upside is basically unlimited.”

A consulting geologist familiar with the project was more cautious, noting that a model is only as good as the assumptions, input data and testing framework behind it. Her comments were not included in the investor deck, although the company did include a slide showing the model from a slightly lower angle.

The question of uncertainty was also raised during the presentation. Fang confirmed that the platform does internally represent uncertainty through confidence intervals, data density warnings and model sensitivity scores, but said these are not always shown to users because “uncertainty can be misinterpreted by decision makers.”

Earlier versions of the platform reportedly included an uncertainty layer that caused poorly constrained areas to fade, blur or turn grey as the model moved away from real data. The feature was removed after pilot clients described it as commercially unhelpful.

“In one case, the model showed a large prospective zone becoming less certain as it moved away from the drill holes,” Fang said. “The client found that emotionally challenging.”

The company has since replaced the uncertainty layer with a simpler three-part classification system: Promising, Highly Promising and Strategically Promising. A fourth category, Unclear, was removed during user testing because it reduced investor engagement.

By late afternoon, several analysts had upgraded the company from speculative to speculative but colourful. One brokerage note cited “multiple independent lines of evidence,” including a plan map, a longitudinal section and the same plan map tilted slightly.

The note acknowledged that no new drilling had been completed, no assays had been received and no mineral resource had been defined. However, it said the company had materially advanced the narrative architecture of the asset, which was considered sufficient to justify a higher target price pending further interpretation.

The company later issued a clarification stating that the AI model should not be interpreted as a guarantee of discovery, economic viability, mineralisation, continuity, grade, tonnage, metallurgy, permitting success, social acceptance or eventual happiness.

The clarification appeared on page 27 of the presentation, beneath a red corridor extending confidently toward the northwest.

By the end of the day, the company had announced a $12 million financing to test the first three targets, refine the remaining eleven and generate additional high-priority opportunities from any results that did not confirm the original interpretation.

Asked what outcome would cause the company to abandon the model entirely, Blockson said abandonment was a strong word.

“In exploration, nothing is ever truly abandoned,” he said. “It is deprioritised, reweighted, recontextualised or moved into a future work programme.”

Pressed to identify a result that would count against the AI interpretation, the company said it would consider the model challenged if all 14 targets were drilled, all assays returned nothing of interest, all structural interpretations failed, all geophysical anomalies were explained by cultural noise, all geochemical patterns were found to be contamination and the property was later converted into a vineyard.

“Even then,” Fang said, “we would want to understand the vineyard in context.”

The serious issue, of course, is not that AI is being used in mineral exploration. AI can help organise neglected datasets, identify overlooked patterns, generate hypotheses and force technical teams to revisit assumptions. Used well, it can make exploration more disciplined.

But a model that produces targets is not automatically doing science. A heatmap is not a hypothesis. An interpolation is not a discovery. A dashboard is not validation. A red blob, however persuasive, is not a drill hole.

Science becomes stronger when uncertainty is exposed, tested and reduced. It becomes weaker when uncertainty is hidden from the people making decisions and replaced with confidence-shaped objects in corporate colours.

The danger is not that AI will sometimes be wrong. Geologists are wrong all the time. Exploration is wrong most of the time. The danger is that AI can be wrong with branding, opacity, scale and a really attractive colour ramp.

A useful AI workflow should not merely produce more targets. It should produce better questions. It should say what it expects to find, why it expects to find it, what alternative explanations remain possible and what result would force everyone to change their mind.

That last part matters, because a model that cannot lose should not be allowed to win.

TORONTO — A leading strategic minerals commentator has warned that Canada risks squandering its natural resource destiny unless governments, regulators, Indigenous communities, environmental groups, securities lawyers, retail investors, journalists and several people with basic follow-up questions stop making the issue so complicated.

Dr. Cassandra Granite, author of the newly released book Mineral Choices: Sovereignty, Prosperity and the Extraction of Tomorrow, said Canada was at a historic crossroads between “unlocking the material foundations of modern life” and “remaining trapped in a self-imposed psychology of decline.”

“The issue is not whether Canada has minerals,” Granite told reporters at a launch event in Toronto.

“The issue is whether Canada still has the courage to become the nation those minerals are asking it to be.”

Several attendees nodded, partly because the sentence sounded important, and partly because the coffee had not yet arrived.

Granite’s new book argues that Canada and The West in general has become too slow, too cautious and too conflicted about mining at exactly the moment when the world needs more copper, nickel, uranium, lithium, rare earths, graphite and almost every other commodity capable of appearing in a panel discussion about the energy transition.

At first, analysts said the argument appeared broadly reasonable.

Canada does have mineral potential. Permitting can be slow. Some environmental groups do oppose almost every project placed in front of them. Modern life does depend on extraction, whether or not modern life enjoys being reminded of this while charging a phone.

However, concerns began when Granite appeared unable to answer any specific question without converting it into a binary choice between prosperity and collapse.

Asked whether environmental regulation can protect communities from genuine harm, Granite was initially measured.

“Of course regulation matters,” she said. “No serious person is arguing for reckless development. Communities matter. Water matters. Trust matters. Mining must be done responsibly.”

She paused.

“But the deeper question is not whether regulation can protect people. The deeper question is whether regulation has become a substitute for leadership.”

According to witnesses, this was the first sign of trouble.

“It sounded fine for about eight seconds,” said one mining lawyer present at the event. “Then I realised she had acknowledged nuance only to escort it quietly out of the building.”

Granite continued.

“A nation’s mineral wealth is not measured only by what lies beneath its soil. It is measured by its willingness to transform those resources into prosperity, resilience and freedom for its people.”

One attendee later described the sentence as “the exact sound LinkedIn makes when it digests a mining conference.”

The launch took a sharper turn when reporters asked Granite about Toronto’s role as one of the world’s major centres of mining finance.

In her book, Granite praises Toronto as a global mining hub and a symbol of Canada’s latent mineral power. Critics, however, note that Toronto is not only home to serious mining finance, world-class expertise and legitimate exploration capital. It is also home to a vast speculative junior mining ecosystem in which many companies raise money for projects that may never become mines, may never approach production, and may, in some cases, primarily produce press releases, conference booths and revised investor decks.

Asked whether this complicated the image of Toronto as a model of mineral leadership, Granite said the criticism misunderstood the nature of exploration.

“The question is not whether every junior becomes a mine,” she said.

“The question is whether Canada still has the financial architecture to transform geological possibility into national destiny.”

A reporter then asked about companies that repeatedly pivot between gold, lithium, rare earths, uranium and “critical minerals” depending on market sentiment.

“Commodity evolution is not opportunism,” Granite replied. “It is strategic adaptation to the needs of civilisation.”

Asked about juniors that have diluted shareholders for years while insiders continued receiving large salaries, Granite nodded gravely.

“Compensation is not extraction,” she said.

“It is vision retention.”

At this point, one analyst from Vancouver reportedly wrote “vision retention?” in his notebook and underlined it three times.

Granite was then asked about the phrase “mining casino,” often used by industry insiders to describe the more speculative end of the junior market, where risk capital, promotional storytelling, selective drill results, tax incentives and retail enthusiasm combine to produce extreme volatility and occasional lawsuits.

“The casino metaphor is seductive but flawed,” Granite said.

“A casino extracts hope from probability. Exploration converts uncertainty into possibility.”

Asked whether that was just the same thing with a better logo, Granite replied:

“A logo is not a brand. It is a promise.”

The moderator attempted to move the conversation back to policy.

Reporters then asked about environmental NGOs.

Granite said groups such as MiningWatch Canada had helped create a culture in which mining was treated as inherently suspect, even when projects were located in jurisdictions with strong laws, high labour standards and meaningful environmental review.

“There is a real contradiction,” she said. “Many people demand electrification, decarbonisation and technological transformation while opposing the mines required to make those things possible.”

For several seconds, the answer appeared to be a legitimate point.

Then she continued.

“These groups are not merely opposing projects. They are opposing the material basis of their own ideals.”

A reporter asked whether the mining industry had also contributed to public distrust through pollution incidents, overpromising, abandoned liabilities, community conflict, poor closure planning, promotional exaggeration and financial structures that reward insiders before projects generate public value.

Granite took a long breath.

“Of course industry must do better,” she said. “I say that very clearly in the book.”

Another pause.

“But the issue is not trust. The issue is time.”

Several people looked down at their shoes.

“Every year we delay responsible extraction is another year we deepen our dependence on jurisdictions that do not share our values. So the choice is not mining or no mining. The choice is responsible development here or irresponsible dependence elsewhere.”

This, observers agreed, was probably the strongest version of Granite’s argument.

It was also the moment when the pattern became impossible to miss.

The issue was not regulation. It was leadership.

The issue was not speculation. It was architecture.

The issue was not trust. It was time.

The issue was not whether a company had ever produced metal. It was whether society still believed in the moral importance of assay results.

“Everything became a civilisational referendum,” said one attendee. “You could ask her whether the sandwiches were gluten free and somehow end up being accused of weakening the West.”

The allegation was tested shortly afterwards.

A journalist asked whether the sandwiches were gluten free.

Granite stared at the catering table.

“Bread is not a carbohydrate,” she said eventually.

“It is infrastructure.”

The moderator announced another break.

By the final session, Granite appeared to be under visible strain. Witnesses said her right eye had begun to tremble slightly whenever anyone introduced a concrete example.

Asked about a hypothetical junior company that had existed for seventeen years, changed commodities five times, raised tens of millions of dollars, produced no revenue, diluted shareholders repeatedly and described every drill campaign as “potentially transformational,” Granite gripped the lectern.

“The issue is not production,” she said.

“The issue is potential.”

Asked whether potential should eventually become something, Granite replied:

“Something is not always the opposite of nothing. Sometimes nothing is the necessary precondition for something.”

The publicist closed her eyes.

The final question concerned artificial intelligence.

A reporter asked whether AI-generated thought leadership was worsening public discourse by smoothing away detail, converting uncertainty into confidence, replacing argument with abstraction, and making every topic sound like a keynote address at a conference called FutureNorth 2035.

Granite initially smiled.

“AI is not the problem,” she said. “The problem is whether we use tools to amplify clarity or accelerate confusion.”

Several attendees relaxed.

Then Granite’s eyes flickered.

“But the deeper issue is not artificial intelligence,” she continued.

“It is civilisational intelligence.”

The room froze.

“We must ask not whether machines can write,” Granite said.

“We must ask whether nations can still think.”

One reporter quietly whispered, “Oh no.”

At this point, according to three witnesses, both of Granite’s pupils appeared to arrange themselves into a four-quadrant matrix labelled Sovereignty, Prosperity, Resilience and Destiny.

The event was brought to a close shortly afterwards.

Industry reaction has been mixed.

Several executives praised Granite for “saying what needed to be said,” although most declined to specify which part.

One junior mining CEO called the book “essential reading for anyone who believes Canada should do more to support responsible exploration,” before adding that his company’s next drill campaign was expected to be transformational.

Environmental groups criticised the book for treating public concern as a psychological defect rather than a political reality.

Mining investors were more divided, with one fund manager describing the work as “useful but overcooked.”

“Canada does need minerals,” he said. “Permitting does need reform. Some NGOs are unrealistic. But if your entire argument depends on pretending the mining industry has not also earned a fair bit of public scepticism, then you are not doing strategy. You are doing motivational laundering.”

Communication experts said the incident reflected a wider problem in resource-sector commentary, where AI-polished certainty is increasingly replacing thought.

“The issue is not that these sentences are always wrong,” said one consultant who specialises in mining and public trust. “The issue is that they create the feeling of analysis while removing the conditions for analysis. They flatten trade-offs into slogans. They turn criticism into weakness. They turn scrutiny into sabotage. They turn every ordinary governance problem into a battle for civilisation.”

Asked whether he had just used the same rhetorical structure, the consultant paused.

“Yes,” he said. “But ironically.”

Deep-sea mining has been declared inevitable by a growing number of critical minerals commentators after several things happened in approximately the same direction.

The announcement follows a recent article explaining that the seabed is no longer a scientific curiosity, ecological question or difficult regulatory problem, but a defining arena for industrial power, military dominance and global influence.

Scientists responded cautiously, noting that the abyssal plain is poorly understood, ecologically slow, biogeochemically complex and difficult to study without spending years in highly specialised research programmes.

Industry observers, however, said this was precisely the kind of careful uncertainty that made scientists poorly suited to understanding inevitability.

“Scientists are always asking questions like ‘what happens to microbial cycling?’ and ‘how resilient are abyssal ecosystems?’ and ‘what are the long-term consequences of sediment disturbance?’” said Sebastian Vale, founder of Strategic Nodule Review and author of the newsletter Minerals, Sovereignty, Tomorrow.

“Those are interesting questions. But they do not change the fact that several vessels now exist.”

According to Vale, who has 25,400 followers on LinkedIn, deep-sea mining has moved beyond the old-fashioned stage of “knowing what we are doing” and entered the more mature phase of “doing things because other people might do them first.”

“The capital is moving. The hardware is being built. The geopolitical architecture is forming. At some point, the deep ocean has to accept that the conversation has evolved.”

The article received 62 reactions and 8 comments, figures that one analyst described as “consistent with early-stage strategic inevitability.”

Supporters of deep-sea mining say the industry is often misunderstood by the public, environmental groups and scientists who are not directly funded by deep-sea mining companies.

“There are lots of scientists involved,” said Vale. “Very serious scientists. Many of them are extremely calm about the risks, particularly after spending long periods inside projects whose commercial viability depends on everyone remaining calm about the risks.”

He rejected the suggestion that this proximity might affect interpretation.

“That is an activist talking point,” he said. “People act as if scientists being funded by the industry somehow makes them less independent. Personally, I think it makes them more realistic. Nobody understands a system better than the organisation preparing to monetise it.”

Marine scientists have continued to argue that major uncertainties remain, particularly around habitat loss, feedback loops, plume behaviour, cumulative disturbance, recovery timescales, microbial processes and the fact that much of the abyss has inconveniently failed to become simple.

But Vale says this kind of uncertainty must now be weighed against the “strategic certainty generated by PowerPoint slides”.

“You cannot build industrial policy around ‘we don’t fully know’,” he explained. “You build it around phrases like ‘critical mineral frontier’, ‘supply chain resilience’, ‘defence capability’ and ‘state-backed seabed optionality’. That is how grown-ups communicate risk.”

Asked whether “inevitable” was too strong a word, Vale was clear.

“I would never say inevitable. That would be simplistic. I am simply saying the capital has moved, the vessels exist, the licences are active, the strategic players are positioning, the genie is out of the bottle, the public debate is behind the curve, and the real question is no longer whether it happens but who controls it.”

He paused.

“So yes, inevitable. But in a nuanced way.”

At press time, the abyssal plain had failed to issue a formal response, although researchers confirmed it was still performing microbial respiration, carbon burial, nutrient cycling and slow ecological processes without a communications strategy, LinkedIn presence or visible interest in military dominance.

Vale said this was unfortunate.

“In a world of critical mineral competition, silence is not neutrality. If the deep ocean wanted to be understood, it should have built a stronger personal brand.”

PetroVolta International has confirmed it will not be investing in specialist communication training at this time, despite recently spending 15 years and approximately $1.5 billion discovering that communities, regulators, local governments, Indigenous groups, land users, fisheries, environmental organisations, journalists, activists, clergy, farmers, mayors, and people with WhatsApp also form part of the operating environment.

The company made the decision after reviewing a proposal from Geologize, a globally acclaimed communication training provider whose courses are endorsed by numerous world-leading energy and geoscience societies.

The proposal reportedly offered practical training to help PetroVolta’s technical and leadership teams build trust, communicate more effectively, understand stakeholder resistance, and avoid converting manageable local concerns into multi-year, multi-billion-dollar strategic paralysis.

The cost of the training was estimated at roughly 0.000001% of PetroVolta’s annual net profit, a figure senior executives described as “small enough to be suspicious.”

“We have to be fiscally responsible,” said Chief Financial Officer Roderick Vane, speaking from a leadership retreat held in a glass conference centre named after the company’s fourth-largest delayed asset. “It is very easy in business to panic and start spending modest sums of money on things that might stop you from losing extraordinary sums of money. That is how costs spiral.”

Vane said the company had carefully reviewed the offer and concluded that communication training should only be approved where “absolutely needed.”

Asked whether a 15-year licensing process costing $1.5 billion might qualify, Vane said the company was “still assessing the root causes.”

“We don’t want to jump to conclusions,” he said. “Yes, there were communities involved. Yes, there were trust issues. Yes, we had difficulty explaining the project in a way that people believed, accepted, supported, or did not actively resist for a decade and a half. But from a governance perspective, it would be irresponsible to simply assume that communication had anything to do with communication.”

PetroVolta is currently facing stalled projects in several South American jurisdictions, where local opposition, permitting friction, reputational concerns, and strained community relations have delayed billions of dollars in potential development.

Company executives stressed that these issues are highly complex and should not be reduced to simplistic questions such as “do our people know how to communicate with other human beings?”

“We take social licence extremely seriously,” said Claudia Fairbank, Senior Vice President for Community Acceptance and Strategic Listening Optics. “That is why we have created a 19-member internal working group to examine whether trust can be rebuilt without teaching anyone anything new.”

She added that further spending must be prioritised carefully.

“Geologize may be respected globally. It may have trained tens of thousands of geoscientists. It may be endorsed across the sector. It may be directly relevant to the exact type of challenge we are facing. It may cost one-tenth of the catering budget for our last executive strategy session. But we cannot fund every shiny object.”

According to internal sources, PetroVolta rejected the training after senior managers agreed that the company’s current problems were “largely external.”

These external factors include local people, local concerns, local media, local politics, local memory, local ecology, local distrust, local legal processes, and local definitions of the word “consultation.”

“Unfortunately, many communities still interpret engagement as something that should happen before decisions are functionally irreversible,” said Magnus Clelland, Vice President for Regional Alignment Excellence. “This creates understandable friction with our preferred model, where we announce something carefully and then become surprised by the emotional complexity of the response.”

Clelland said PetroVolta was committed to improving its communication, although not necessarily by improving the communication skills of the people doing the communicating.

Instead, the company has approved a $38 million Stakeholder Confidence Transformation Programme led by a major global consultancy. The programme will begin with a nine-month diagnostic exercise to determine whether people like being ignored.

A second phase will produce a heatmap of opposition intensity, followed by a confidential executive summary explaining that trust is important.

The total programme is expected to cost 3,800 times more than the Geologize training proposal.

“That is different,” Vane explained. “Consultancy helps leadership understand that something should probably be done. Training asks people to do something. These are entirely separate budget categories.”

Industry observers say PetroVolta’s decision reflects a wider pattern in the resource sector, where communication is widely praised in keynote speeches, ESG reports, annual statements, sustainability panels, leadership values frameworks, LinkedIn posts, and crisis response documents, then quietly declined when someone suggests teaching staff how to do it properly.

One senior analyst, speaking anonymously, said the sector has a mature and sophisticated approach to social licence.

“Companies wait until the cost of poor communication becomes impossible to ignore,” she said. “Then they ignore it using more expensive language.”

PetroVolta has denied that it undervalues communication.

In a written statement, the company said:

“PetroVolta remains deeply committed to transparent, inclusive, respectful, locally grounded, culturally sensitive, trust-based, multi-stakeholder dialogue across all operating regions. We are currently prioritising training where it is absolutely needed.”

The statement was circulated internally in English only.

At press time, PetroVolta had approved an emergency $420 million contingency provision for delays arising from “unanticipated stakeholder awareness.”

One executive close to the matter said communication training may be reconsidered in future, particularly if opposition spreads to another jurisdiction, project timelines extend beyond 20 years, or Geologize agrees to rename the course “Strategic Human Risk Interface Optimisation.”

“That might help,” he said. “Training sounds optional. Optimisation sounds like something we can defend to the board.”

Fantasy MineBuilder™ solves that problem by replacing real exploration with a fully synthetic interface in which users can draft imaginary mineral assets in response to current macroeconomic anxiety.

Players begin by selecting a commodity from a rotating menu that includes copper, lithium, uranium, nickel, graphite, rare earths, antimony, tungsten, and whichever metal was most recently described by a defence minister as “essential to Western security.”

Once a commodity is selected, users choose a jurisdictional backdrop. Bellweather agreed. “There is no reason communities should continue bearing the externalities of investor imagination. If capital wants to hallucinate a copper discovery, it can now do so safely in a regulated digital enclosure.”

The platform includes several specialist modules designed to replicate the junior exploration experience, including a Randomized Assay Generator, which produces intervals such as “22.4 metres of emotional copper equivalent from surface-adjacent optimism,” and a Dilution Simulator, which models the user’s ownership position approaching zero through oversubscribed placements, strategic investments, warrant exercises, rollbacks, and “balance-sheet strengthening events.”

“I bought 10% of a fantasy lithium brine project on Monday,” said Vancouver investor Blake Therrien. “By Thursday, I owned 0.004% of a synthetic antimony narrative with exposure to NATO rearmament. There’s something peaceful about being diluted into oblivion by people who keep thanking you for your support. I have never felt more connected to the sector.”

Silicon Valley has done it again.

StratAI Metals, an artificial intelligence mineral exploration company backed by Preston Wyle, Carter Renn, and Dax Holbrook, announced this week the close of a $415 million funding round to accelerate its mission of finding the metals that will power the clean energy transition, using computers, in an industry that has been finding metals without computers for four hundred years, though admittedly with mixed results, which is the point, or at least the pitch.

The company’s flagship asset is the Karonga copper deposit in Zambia, which StratAI’s platform identified using advanced pattern-recognition algorithms trained on over a century of historical geological data. The deposit is located in the Central African Copperbelt, a geological formation so named because it contains a very large amount of copper and has been called the Copperbelt for roughly as long as anyone has been naming things in the region.

Critics — who industry insiders describe as “geologists” — have noted that the Karonga deposit sits within an area that geological surveys within the Copperbelt had flagged as prospective for large-scale copper mineralisation prior to the invention of machine learning, cloud computing, Series C funding rounds, and, in some cases, the modern nation-state of Zambia.

StratAI identified, prioritised, and heroically purchased the deposit from its previous owners, who had looked at it and decided to build a different mine nearby, following the owners before them, who had also looked at it and had broadly the same thought, in a tradition of declining to develop the Karonga deposit that stretches back at least twenty years and which StratAI is now proposing to end, pending completion of a feasibility study, updated resource estimates, a final investment decision.

And the construction of a railway.

A LinkedIn post announcing the raise has received over 4,000 likes from mining professionals who have thoughts about it but cannot express them, as the people who wrote the cheques also sit on their boards. The post claimed that StratAI’s AI “reduces exploration costs by over 60%.”

Exploration costs are approximately 6% of total mine development costs. The remaining 94% — which includes obtaining community consent, navigating regulatory environments, managing a development team across a decade, and financing $2.3 billion in capital expenditure, in Central Africa, plus the railway — were not mentioned, as they do not fit in a bullet point and are, in any case, someone else’s problem.

First production is expected in the early 2030s. The company is valued at $2.75 billion.

StratAI Metals did not respond to a request for comment. The company was announcing another breakthrough. The breakthrough was about rocks.

A distinguished panel of mining industry experts gathered this week to formally investigate one of the sector’s most enduring mysteries: why capital continues to hesitate before flowing into high-risk, decade-long, policy-volatile, geologically complex projects in politically uncertain jurisdictions, often with no clear near-term return.

“We call it the Discovery Gap,” said David Hartley, a uranium specialist who has spent considerable portions of his career on multiple continents observing capital not going places. “The geology is there. The demand is there. And yet — and I cannot stress how baffling this is — the money is not always immediately there.”

Hartley paused to let the gravity of this finding sink in.

The panel, moderated with great seriousness, examined what experts are now describing as “a widening distance between future supply needs and present capital allocation” — a phenomenon previously known to economists as “risk,” and to everyone else as “obvious.”

Lars Veldman of Apex Commodity Consulting, who focuses professionally on investor psychology, explained that investors are psychologically inclined to avoid losing large sums of money in cycles that last longer than their fund mandates, their patience, or in some cases their careers.

“It’s behavioural,” Veldman confirmed, using a word that lent the observation significant academic weight.

The panel noted that Africa, despite hosting “some of the most underexplored and prospective geology globally,” continues to receive capital only after prices have moved — a pattern attributed to what experts called “cyclical capital flows,” “investor impatience,” and “limited understanding of mining development timelines.”

The possibility that fund managers are assessed on quarterly returns rather than 15-year discovery cycles was not raised, as it was not felt to add to the discussion.

When asked why governments periodically ban the very thing investors have committed capital to, Hartley drew a careful distinction between “general risk” and “policy turnarounds,” describing the difference as the difference between knowing a floor might be slippery and actually falling on it. Both panellists agreed this was bad.

“When governments shift direction abruptly,” Hartley noted gravely, “capital does not simply pause. It withdraws.”

The audience, which included numerous people whose capital had withdrawn, nodded.

The discussion concluded with a broad consensus that the solution to the Discovery Gap is “aligning long-duration capital with long-duration development cycles” — a phrase which elegantly describes building a financial system in which the people providing the money have the same incentives as the people spending it, and which no one at the panel appeared to be building.

A follow-up panel is scheduled for 2027, by which time, experts project, the Discovery Gap will still exist and remain surprising.

LONDON — Mining strategist and pundit Marcus Ashcroft told an audience this week that Western nations must stop responding emotionally to war, coercion and territorial threats, and instead focus on the deeper lesson of modern instability: “serious countries secure antimony.”

Speaking at the Global Materials Sovereignty Forum, Ashcroft said recent missile attacks, rising military tensions and renewed suggestions that larger powers may simply absorb smaller peaceful territories had generated “a great deal of noise” around what was, at root, “a minerals story.”

“When people see missiles, troop movements, threats against allies or rising civilian casualties, they tend to react at the level of headlines. Serious people ask what this means for graphite, processing capacity and strategic optionality.”

Ashcroft, whose writing has made him a favourite among executives who enjoy hearing copper discussed as though it were a constitutional principle, warned that the public remained trapped in “a peacetime mindset.”

“There is still far too much sentiment in the conversation,” he said. “Too many people are asking whether this is tragic, destabilising or morally ugly. The adult question is whether allied nations are finally prepared to build resilient supply chains in vanadium.”

He warned that the old world order was collapsing under the weight of its own procedural softness and would need to be replaced by something “more serious.” Pressed on what this new democratic order might actually look like, Ashcroft pointed admiringly to states where mines, refineries and strategic corridors are rarely held up by public objections, prompting some confusion as to whether democracy was being defended or merely rebranded for faster throughput.

Clarifying, Ashcroft said that rival powers had surged ahead partly because they maintained “a more streamlined relationship with dissent.”

“Other systems do not allow every mine, refinery or logistics corridor to be slowed by localized emotion. They understand that strategic momentum cannot be endlessly negotiated.”

Several delegates later said they understood this as a reference to the ability of authoritarian states to ignore community opposition, suppress scrutiny and treat consent as an administrative inconvenience. Others praised the remark as “a refreshingly grown-up intervention on permitting.”

During the event, Ashcroft praised the work of Frontier Resilience, a fictitious but highly respected metals-focused investment fund that specializes in identifying opportunities created by sanctions, regional conflict, tariff escalations and “sudden sovereign realignments.” According to its materials, the fund seeks to capture value from “persistent geopolitical inefficiencies” across minor metals and defense-relevant commodities.

A spokesperson for the fund said the current environment was “challenging at the human level, but constructive from a positioning perspective.”

“Our thesis is very simple,” the spokesperson said. “Where others see instability, we see mispriced strategic seriousness.”

The remark was widely shared online, particularly by investors who have recently begun referring to war as a “demand catalyst.”

Ashcroft also rejected criticism that the industry had become uncomfortably glib about violence and coercion. Asked whether it was strange to discuss missile burn rates and Arctic takeover threats with the tone of a man unveiling a premium insights webinar, he gave what attendees described as “a patient smile of almost pedagogical disappointment.”

BELÉM, BRAZIL — On the day the world was due to debate how to prevent catastrophic climate change, negotiators were debating what they would debate about it.

The summit’s opening session was postponed while diplomats finalised “the framework for an agenda to develop a framework.” Organisers described the delay as “a sign of healthy multilateralism,” noting that no one had yet left the room in despair — “a measurable success compared with last year in Azerbaijan.”

Scientists warn that many global systems are now hitting irreversible tipping points, where feedback loops accelerate warming on their own. Asked if this concerned him, one diplomat replied, “It depends how you define irreversible. We prefer to keep our options open.”
