I want the refreshed version of this newsletter to do one thing particularly well: turn what is happening in Conversational AI into useful career decisions.

So, less link-dumping. More: What does this change about the work? Which skills are becoming more valuable? What can you do about it this week?

The clearest signal from the past seven days is that Conversational AI is moving beyond systems that answer questions. The focus is now on agents that retrieve information, use tools, follow policies, complete work and know when to involve a person.

That changes the career opportunity.

This Week’s Career Signal: The Valuable Work Is Moving Beyond the Demo

On Wednesday, OpenAI launched OpenAI Presence, an enterprise product for running agents across voice, chat and internal workflows.

Look beyond the product name and the important list is this one:

• Standard operating procedures.

• Policies and permissions.

• Approved actions.

• Simulations and evaluations.

• Guardrails.

• Escalation rules.

• Controlled post-launch improvement.

This is where a growing share of Conversational AI work now sits.

A model may be able to hold a fluent conversation without anybody scripting every sentence. It cannot independently decide what your company permits, what counts as success, when approval is necessary or how a failed action should be corrected.

That work still needs people.

Your career move: When describing a project, stop at neither “I designed the conversation” nor “I built the agent”. Explain how you defined its boundaries, tested its behaviour, measured its outcomes and handled failure. That is a much stronger production story.

Bank of America Shows the Other Side of the AI Workforce Story

Bank of America announced an expansion of EricaAssist, its human-assisted AI agent for customer service employees.

More than 18,000 representatives use the system during client calls. According to the bank, its latest capabilities provide contextual guidance in under three seconds and have reduced average call times by nearly one minute.

The agent summarises why the client is calling, retrieves relevant information and recommends possible next steps. The employee remains responsible for listening, explaining and deciding how to proceed.

This matters because it is a reminder that the Conversational AI market is not exclusively about replacing the human participant. There is also a substantial market for systems that support people during live conversations.

Those systems require slightly different expertise:

• Real-time information retrieval.

• Low-latency experience design.

• Clear recommendations rather than autonomous decisions.

• Human override and accountability.

• Interfaces that support rather than distract.

• Measurement of both efficiency and service quality.

Your career move: If you come from contact-centre operations, sales enablement, learning, knowledge management or agent-assist technology, make that experience visible. You may be closer to a valuable Conversational AI specialism than your current job title suggests.

Meta Is Turning the Assistant into an Ongoing Relationship

Meta announced new capabilities on Friday that allow Meta AI to complete certain tasks with less repeated prompting.

The updated assistant can create daily briefings from calendar information and run recurring tasks such as weekly plans or trend updates. The features are initially being released through the Meta AI app and website in selected markets, with expansion to platforms including WhatsApp planned. Reuters has the launch details.

A recurring agent creates different design challenges from a single-session chatbot.

It needs to remember what it is doing, understand when circumstances have changed, communicate progress, obtain fresh consent where appropriate and recover when a connected system fails.

Conversation design therefore expands into:

• State and memory design.

• Notification strategy.

• User control.

• Permission management.

• Long-running task recovery.

• Trust over repeated interactions.

Your career move: Add one recurring or asynchronous workflow to your next portfolio project. Show what the agent remembers, when it checks back with the user and how somebody can pause, change or cancel the task.

British Gas Provides a More Difficult Workforce Signal

Centrica, the owner of British Gas, plans to remove 1,300 call-centre, offshore and back-office roles over two years while also deploying more AI tools.

The important qualification is that chief executive Chris O’Shea said AI was not the principal cause of these particular reductions. He attributed them mainly to changing customer behaviour: more than 90% of customers reportedly use digital channels first, while call volumes have fallen by 20%.

He also said the company expected more jobs to emerge around its digital interface. The Guardian’s report includes the full context.

There are two simultaneous signals here:

1. Routine telephone and back-office work is under pressure.

2. Work connected to digital service design, agent operation, complex escalation and quality oversight is becoming more important.

It would be dishonest to pretend every displaced role will neatly turn into an AI role. It would be equally unhelpful to treat “customer service” and “Conversational AI” as entirely separate career markets.

Your career move: If you work in service operations, document the knowledge you have that an AI project needs: exception handling, vulnerable customers, escalation, complaint resolution, policy interpretation and the realities of how users behave. Domain expertise becomes more valuable when it is translated into system requirements.

Skills Radar: Build a Voice-Agent Evaluation in One Sitting

This week’s recommended resource is OpenAI’s Realtime Eval Guide.

It walks through the components needed to evaluate a voice system: a dataset, graders, an evaluation harness and a feedback loop that turns production failures into future tests.

The guide is free to read. Running the examples may incur API usage charges.

Here is a smaller portfolio exercise you can complete without building an entire product:

1. Choose one voice task, such as rescheduling an appointment.

2. Write 12 test conversations.

3. Include ambiguity, interruption, missing information, background noise, an unsupported request and a situation requiring human help.

4. Score each test for outcome, policy adherence, tool use and handoff.

5. Identify one failure and document how you would correct it.

6. Turn the results into a two-page portfolio case study.

That case study will tell an employer more than another screenshot of a happy-path conversation.

Since then, it’s grown into a niche job board serving thousands of professionals and companies globally, with strong engagement, consistent traffic, and a highly relevant audience — all thanks to this community.

At this stage, I feel the platform would benefit from an owner (or group of owners) who wants to take it further commercially — whether that’s scaling paid job postings, sponsorships, partnerships, or other ideas I simply haven’t had the time or focus to pursue.

I wanted to share this here first because:

That’s why I’m refocusing my efforts to find a format that works best—not just for me, but for you.

If you’re a Reddit enthusiast, you might have noticed that jobs are auto-posted to our dedicated subreddit. It’s been a great experiment, but I want to better understand if this platform is truly adding value for the community.

This is something I’m really excited about—a space where I can host exclusive resources, templates, and career challenges. The goal is to provide actionable tools that can help you level up your skills and career. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m eager to hear your feedback on what you’d like to see here.

I got my hands on some data from Indeed, and the results are both exciting and telling—especially if you’re a professional in Conversational AI.

I’ve been diving deep into some recent numbers, and the trends are pretty clear: we're at the dawn of a major surge in demand for AI talent, particularly in areas related to Generative AI and Conversational AI. Let me walk you through what I found, and more importantly, what it means for all of us in this space.

The Great AI Job Market Comeback of 2023

At the start of 2023, after a dip in 2022, the job market for AI-related roles bounced back with a vengeance. According to Indeed data, postings containing Artificial Intelligence-related terms rebounded significantly across key markets like the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This recovery marks a renewed push by companies to ramp up their AI initiatives after a period of caution.

For Conversational AI professionals, this is particularly exciting because it signals that organizations are doubling down on automation, customer interaction technologies, and AI-powered customer support.

Generative AI Takes Center Stage

The real kicker, though, was the data on Generative AI job postings. Starting around mid-2023, there was a massive spike in demand for talent with skills in Generative AI. We're talking exponential growth, particularly in markets like Canada and the United States. This tells us that companies aren’t just experimenting with AI anymore—they’re going all-in, especially with tools that can create content, automate conversations, and scale customer engagement.

The implications are huge: as organizations rush to integrate these advanced AI technologies, they need skilled professionals who can translate business needs into effective conversational experiences. If you’re a Conversation Designer, Prompt Engineer, or AI Product Manager, you’re sitting at the intersection of one of the most dynamic trends in tech right now.

Wow, I finally made it to issue 100!!

This has been a labour of love to me. I work on this newsletter and associated content while waiting for my daughter to get through of 3 hours of trampolining and gymnastics on a Saturday morning. So that’s why it tends to get quiet during school holidays - like the last several weeks. So thank you for bearing with me during the quieter periods.

The same goes for the jobs on the Bot Jobs board. While I try to automate as much as possible, no job gets posted (unless a paid, featured role) without me first authorising it. This ensures that only high-quality jobs hit the board and no jobs slip through the net that doesn’t quite match.

For the blog this week, I’ve gone deep into an area that can be quite emotionally charged - Navigating Career Setbacks and Job Rejections: A Guide to Resilience and Growth. As you know, Bot Jobs is a side/passion project and not my day job. So I go through the same ups and downs that you do in navigating my career - whether freelance or even applying for a permanent job that interests me.

However, things don’t always go to plan, but while it’s easy to look at these situations as a negative, it’s more important to be resilient, learn and grow from the experience.

So this week’s blog is a deep dive essay into this.

From my perspective, I don’t like concentrating on the negatives, so I wanted to share my thoughts with you on this.

Thanks for the feedback last week. It seems that three quarters of you think that a report into the analysis behind Conversation Design job adverts is more interesting for Job Seekers, than employers.

So I’ll be sure to write it for that perspective.
