Ben Johnson has set a pretty aggressive goal for the Bears.

He wants Chicago to be the highest-scoring offense in the NFL.

Last year’s benchmark was about 38 points per game.

That’s a fun number to talk about, but I think there’s a better way to understand what Johnson is actually asking his offense to accomplish.

Because if you simply look at the Bears’ 2025 numbers, you might underestimate how large the challenge is.

Chicago scored 441 points, or about 26 points per game.

That sounds like a pretty good starting point.

But the Bears also finished the season +22 in turnover differential.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Every offseason it’s the same argument. A team lands a splashy veteran, restructures half the roster to fit him under the cap, and the takes roll in: this is a team that’s serious about winning. Meanwhile the front office playing the long game — hoarding picks, staying flexible, refusing to mortgage the future — gets called timid, cheap, or worse.

I’ve never bought it. And after building a model this week to actually stress-test the question, I’m more convinced than ever that the “go all in” crowd has the math backwards. Not the vibes. The math.

Winning a Super Bowl is mostly a probability problem

Start with an uncomfortable fact: nobody is a favorite to win the Super Bowl. Not the best team in the league. Not ever.

To win it all, you have to win three or four single-elimination games in a row against playoff-caliber opponents. Give a genuinely loaded team a 65% chance in every one of those games — that’s a strong favorite in postseason terms — and the math is unforgiving. With a first-round bye, three wins at 65% each is about a 27% shot. Without the bye, four wins drops you to 18%. Even an all-time juggernaut at 70% per game only climbs to about 34%.

So the ceiling on any single season, no matter how hard you push, sits somewhere around 25–30%. The best team in football is roughly a 3-to-1 underdog against the field every January. You cannot buy your way past the bracket.

The part that breaks people’s intuition

Here’s where it gets interesting. If you can’t win in one season, the real question becomes: how many good tickets can you hold, and for how long?

The chance of winning at least one title over a stretch of years is one minus the odds you miss every single year, multiplied together. Run that out and something strange happens. Ten years of quiet, unglamorous contention at 12% a year gives you about a 72% chance of at least one ring. Two absolutely maxed-out seasons at the 25% ceiling? About 44%.

Two of the best rosters money can build produce a worse decade than ten years of never being special. Nobody’s gut says that. That’s exactly why it’s worth showing rather than saying.

Then we tested it against its own best objections

I could have stopped there, but the argument had two real holes, and honest models get holes fixed rather than hidden.

Objection one: nobody goes all-in once and then coasts. A real all-in GM cycles — load up, take three years to rebuild from the dead cap and traded picks, load up again. Two or three shots per decade. So I rebuilt the tool to run that cycle on repeat.

The cycle makes it worse, not better. Every maxed-out season you buy costs you three near-zero seasons paying for it, and compounding punishes that trade brutally. For a one-shot-every-four-years cycle to merely tie a steady 13%-a-year contender, each all-in season would need roughly a 39% title probability. The playoff bracket has never allowed a number like that to exist.

Objection two: those odds assume the loaded team actually shows up in January. When the Rams trade for a star pass rusher in July, that “22% Super Bowl shot” is a January number — what the healthy roster is worth if it arrives in the playoffs intact. But rosters get built in the offseason and tested over sixteen weeks of attrition. One torn ACL in September and the whole premise is gone. Betting markets price preseason favorites — the single best team in football in August — around a 13–15% implied title shot, precisely because they’re pricing in everything that can go wrong first.

So the model now lets you enter January odds and then discount them by the chance the season stays on track. Watch 22% become 18% in real time. That’s the gap between the fantasy roster and the one that has to survive a season.

The verdict

After fixing both objections — the ones that were supposed to help the all-in side — the gap didn’t shrink. It grew. A well-run team that contends every year comes out around a 75% chance of a title over a decade. The all-in-and-rebuild cycle lands closer to 59%. Same franchise, same ten years, and the disciplined approach wins by a wide margin while producing meaningfully more expected championships.

The whole thing reduces to one asymmetry: the playoff format caps your upside, but nothing caps your downside. Going all-in buys you a few extra points of probability in your peak years. Every dead year it creates costs you more than that. Championship equity is cheapest when you buy it in bulk, every year, forever.

Crank the peak odds. Shorten the rebuilds. Give them the healthiest, luckiest cycle the tool allows. The steady team still usually wins. That’s not me being cute — that’s the shape of the bracket doing what it always does.

The turnovers are loud. They stick in your memory. But I wanted to know what the down-to-down reality actually looks like when you strip away the emotion.

I pulled this in Hashmarks this morning to find out exactly who delivers when the game is on the line. The question is simple: Which QBs have the highest EPA per dropback in the 4th quarter, trailing by one score, since 2023? (We set a minimum of 50 dropbacks to filter out the noise).

Here is what the data actually says:

There are a few immediate takeaways when you look at the top tier:

• The Small Sample Kings: Bo Nix (+0.562) and Michael Penix Jr. (+0.437) sit at the very top. Penix impressively has zero INTs in these spots, while Nix boasts a wild +13.2 CPOE. But at just 58 plays each, you have to interpret that with caution.

• The Cleanest Résumé: Dak Prescott is incredible here. Among the top five, he has the largest sample (117 plays), 8 TDs, zero INTs, and a +0.309 EPA/play.

• The Elite Cluster: Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, and Lamar Jackson are all grouped right where you’d expect them to be, hovering between +0.23 and +0.25 EPA/play.

• The Ghost: Patrick Mahomes isn’t on the list. Why? Because across 2023–2025, he didn’t even reach the 50-play minimum for trailing in the 4th quarter. That is a flex in itself.

But let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Sitting right there at #8 overall, hanging right behind Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, is Jordan Love.

The narrative says Love melts down. The data says the exact opposite. Love is operating at an elite, top-10 level in the most high-leverage situations a quarterback can face.

But the most revealing number on this chart isn’t his +0.208 EPA/play. It’s the far left column: 155 plays. Jordan Love has the largest sample size of anyone in the top 20. He has been forced into this exact scenario—4th quarter, down by one score—more than any other highly efficient quarterback in football. Yes, those 6 interceptions are real, and they hurt. But his overall efficiency, driven by 7 touchdowns, a +1.1% Completion Percentage Over Expected (CPOE), and a 45.8% success rate, proves that his positive plays vastly outweigh the negative ones.

He isn’t a late-game liability. He’s the only reason they are staying in those games to begin with.
