When someone comes to us with a challenge, our instinct is to rush in and fix it or tell them how to solve it. It usually comes from good intentions, but it can quietly turn the other person into a problem to be solved with our own knowledge and experience, rather than someone capable of finding their own way through. Meaningful help looks different: it’s help anchored in support, listening without judgment, and giving someone the space to access their own resourcefulness. Practically, that means leading with empathy, listening to learn rather than to fix, asking open-ended questions instead of leading ones, and helping people find and fan what matters most to them.

“Self-compassion is about radical self-acceptance—of the good, the bad and the ugly—as all being part of the human experience. If we are not able to see or appreciate a portion of the story, the narrative is not accurate.”

Many of my women clients, when they receive positive feedback, dismiss it—"the evaluators are just being nice"—and rush straight to their areas for development. This is a lack of self-compassion, and it means operating from only half the picture. Ironically, many are self-proclaimed perfectionists who prize accuracy, yet refuse to look at half the evidence. Self-compassion rests on three pillars: mindfulness (observing feedback without judgment), self-kindness (meeting our shortcomings with gentleness), and common humanity (remembering an inner critic is part of being human, not a personal failing). We expand our self-awareness when we let all the data in, strengths included.
