I have been tracking the progress of AI since January 2025, since Trump’s inauguration. Initially, starting at one, I pegged the doubling factor at 3.5 months; then I adjusted it lower to 3.3 on August 17th. After further research, I am settling it back to 3.1, which is 13.43 weeks. This is the time it takes for AI to double in raw ability, breadth, and the ability to create useful work.

Today, that number stands at 52. Think about it. AI is 52 times more capable today than 20 months ago. But it is rising geometrically, and by the end of December, it will be 130. By the end of March 2027, it will be 252; by June, it will stand at 494. One year from now, at the close of business, it will rise to 768. And finally, when Trump completes his term in 2028, it will be an astronomical 26,454.

Let that sink in. If we have 52 reasons to worry about AI today, how will we cope with 26,454? Indeed, we live the era of “Future Shock” that the Toffler’s wrote about in 1970: the masses will treat it as magic or even as the rise of AI god.

Let me give you a couple why am compressing to 3.1.

On August 19, 2026, Patrick Collison, John Collison, and William Gaybrick signed a private letter to Stripe investors. OpenRouter, they said, would join Stripe as the largest acquisition the company has ever made.¹ They wrote:

“It’s a fuzzy and perhaps already overworked term, but we decided that January 1st marked the beginning of the singularity, and we have since been operating on that basis. The singularity is often invoked alongside millenarian forecasts, but, in our case, we simply saw a large inflection in long-run trends (for example, a huge increase in the rate of new firm creation), and we decided that we ought to take the phase change seriously.”¹

What does this mean?

They saw a leapfrog change in new-firm creation and the ginormous leap of token consumption. They named it the singularity and dated it as January 1. The same day they announced the purchase of OpenRouter for $7.5 billion.²

By the way, this is not my date, and it is not a claim that machines somehow surpassed human intelligence.

The same letter says agents are “on the cusp of becoming economic actors.” It treats capital and intelligence as the two digital flows under every business. It calls tokens the “new currency of intelligence capital.” It says stablecoins will likely be boosted as they become the “native currency of the AI economy.”¹ In the newsroom, Patrick Collison called tokens the “central currency” for companies building with AI.² In March, they had already published a protocol for agents to pay businesses and one another.⁴

To clarify, payment and/or asset tokens are NOT the same as the tokens of AI compute.

They are building payments so AI agents can buy and sell. Agent-to-agent, tokenized e-commerce is the future of the Internet. Don’t think they are only selling a checkout button. They are not! There is no human in the loop.

Nate B. Jones posted a video on or about August 24 titled “Stripe Paid $7.5 Billion For OpenRouter. You Are Living In The Age Of Startups.”⁵ He restated their private line: as far as Stripe is concerned, the singularity began January 1, 2026.

Jones walked the consumption curve. He said OpenRouter-reported token volume grew about 24,000 times from August 2023 to August 2026, doubling every 11 weeks for three years. He said the week of August 10, 2026 closed at 75 trillion tokens, and the next week was pacing above 87 trillion. He compared that 11-week double to Moore’s law. Token throughput is not necessarily useful work, but you get the idea.⁵

Matt Murphy and Deedy Das of Menlo Ventures, writing August 19, put the same curve at about 30,000 times since launch, to a 4.5-plus quadrillion-token annual run rate, growing 33 percent month over month and doubling every 11 weeks, from about 3 billion tokens a week at the August 10, 2023 rebrand.⁶ OpenRouter’s own blog said it now processes more than 10 trillion tokens a day, with at least ten times growth in inference volume every year.⁷ The letter says OpenRouter token consumption has been compounding at 9 percent a week this year.¹ The letter’s 9 percent a week and Menlo’s about 30,000 times are the same kind of object as Jones’s 24,000 times.

The Tokenization of the Stock Market

The disruption most people will meet first is the listed stock market, and it will happen through three programs, not one event. On December 11, 2025, SEC staff issued a no-action letter to the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) for DTCC Tokenization Services. Eligible assets at launch are Russell 1000 stocks, U.S. Treasuries, and ETFs that track major indexes. The tokens are digital records of claims the broker already holds. Registered ownership “would remain registered in the name of Cede & Co., DTC’s nominee.”⁸

NYSE said in January it was building a tokenized-securities platform but stated no launch date.⁹ Nasdaq said in March it would launch an issuer-sponsored equity token design, operational in the first half of 2027.¹⁰ DTCC processed production trades on July 15 and said the day set the stage for an October 2026 service launch.¹¹ Those are three programs.

So, October is DTCC’s launch. A customer at a conventional U.S. broker does not wake up on October 1 able to trade a tokenized share around the clock. The service lets member firms convert claims they already hold at DTC into on-chain copies that still sit under Cede & Co. The customer’s app changes only if that broker later turns the conversion on. Cede & Co. has been the nominee on American securities for decades, and a tokenized entitlement does not take that name off the register. People think they own the shares. The registered owner is still Cede & Co. That is disruption the customer does not see.

I have no way to measure inference-token consumption from that depository service. I expect it to run off the charts.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is this. More uses appear, and they appear faster, because the infrastructure and work are already being built: payments that let an agent buy from another agent, a model router that bills tokens as intelligence capital, and tokenized claims that still sit under Cede & Co.

A developer does not invent a firm from nothing. He plugs a model into OpenRouter, bills the tokens, and an agent can already pay.

Discovery of new uses can look sudden and still be predictable, because the uses were waiting for those payments, the AI, that router, and those claims.

These are a couple of reasons I compressed the multiplier to 3.1 months, and all I can say is, “Brace yourselves,” because it is going to be a wild ride into the future.

Songs of the Resistance: Flock on the Pole

This is a history lesson to set the record straight on the total disruption of the surveillance industry, and other disruptors who will follow the same pattern in the future. I have been careful to provide footnotes and references so you can do your own research and draw your own conclusions.

On August 21, 2017, Flock Safety pitched their company at Y Combinator’s Summer Demo Day at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. TechCrunch listed it as “Wireless security systems for neighborhoods” and repeated the company’s line that it had “already solved its first crime.”¹ BBC the next day showed the hardware on the floor and a $50-a-house-a-year price, with seven Atlanta-area neighborhoods.² That was nine years ago.

The cameras are already on the record, but the rest of the story is seen in the 0people and money behind it.

How does an ambitious young startup founder transition into calling citizens of our nation terrorists when they criticize his products? How can he justify working with law enforcement to “uphold the law” when he is blind to the U.S. Constitution, which still stands with the Fourth Amendment?

In 2015, I wrote that to a technocrat that there is no such thing as too much data.³ In 2018 I wrote that plate readers sit inside the smart-city stack, and that we are living in a fishbowl.⁴ Those books do not name Flock; the 2022 book used Rekor as the vehicle panopticon.⁵

Indeed, what can be surveilled can be controlled, and that was the point.⁶

Who They Were Before The Cameras

The legal name is Flock Group Inc., a Delaware company founded in 2017. It does business as Flock Safety. That is the brand and the website, not the legal name.^{7 39} Jon Padfield of Business Reform said the same in an Atlanta interview last week, published here.³⁸

Y Combinator’s Summer 2017 list names two founders: Garrett Langley, the CEO, and Matt Feury, the CTO.⁸ The August 29, 2018 SEC Form D names Langley as officer and director, Feury as director, and Ilya Sukhar of Matrix Partners as director. Paige Todd is not on that filing and is not on the YC founder block.^{7 8} Atlanta press in 2018 called her a first employee,⁹ and the company now styles her a cofounder.

They are commercial Atlanta studio people, not cops, not intel, and not license-plate-reader people from before 2017.

Langley, from Atlanta, had a Georgia Tech electrical-engineering degree in 2009.^{11 15} He was an early employee at Tripp Rackley’s Firethorn, sold to Qualcomm in 2007.¹² Then Experience; the 2014 Cox coverage named Rackley, not him, and valued the deal at more than $200 million.¹³ Clutch was bought by Cox Automotive in August 2018 after Langley had left.¹⁴

Feury is from Marietta and studied computer science at Georgia Tech in 2011. He engineered at Experience from November 2012 to April 2017 and had not founded a company before Flock.¹⁵ Todd gained a Georgia Tech Management degree in 2007, an Emory MBA, then worked in operations at Experience and Moment.¹⁰ The documented meeting place is Experience LLC, inside Rackley’s Kenzie Lane studio.

The origin pitch has been stable since 2017: neighborhood property crime, police want a plate, and city cameras cost $25,000 to $250,000, so they put an Android phone in a waterproof box and sold it to homeowners’ associations. Silicon Valley, on September 3, 2017, reported seven Atlanta-area HOA contracts and two open cases, not a closed arrest during the batch.¹⁶ It was a pitch, not a blotter.

Y Combinator, Then The Money

Y Combinator’s published 2017 deal was $120,000 for 7 percent, and Crunchbase News later reported that seed money as YC-led.¹⁷ Langley’s YC-page essay does not name an introducer, an interview panel, or who called with the yes.⁸

Sam Altman was President of YC Group in 2017, Michael Seibel ran the flagship batch from September 2016, and Dalton Caldwell ran admissions.¹⁸ There is no public letter, tweet, interview, or founder quote in which Altman names Flock. However, it is inconceivable that Altman was absent when the decision was made to accept Flock into the program.

Y Combinator’s website today lists Garry Tan as Primary Partner, but that field is a later rewrite and is absent on the April 2021 archive of the page.⁸ Tan left YC in November 2015 and returned as president in January 2023.¹⁹ He cannot have been the 2017 group partner. That partner is unknown.

The documented 2017 Tan relationship is money. Flock’s own blog, July 2, 2019, said “Alexis Ohanian and his Initialized partner Garry Tan were Flock Safety’s very first investors,” with the check size not disclosed.²⁰

The later money came the ordinary way, and it was not a 2017 walk from Altman to Andreessen Horowitz. Matrix put Sukhar on the board in August 2018.⁷ Bedrock led a $10 million A-1 in December 2018.²¹ Although a direct competitor today, Axon bought a minority stake in April 2020.²² Meritech’s Alex Clayton took a board seat in November 2020.²³ Andreessen Horowitz wrote its first public check in July 2021: a $150 million Series D; David Ulevitch joined the board.²⁴ Tiger Global led $150 million in February 2022 at $3.5 billion.²⁵ A later paper includes $275 million in March 2025 at $7.5 billion, with a16z as the public lead.²⁶ Forge later listed a March 2026 Class I at $8.25 billion.²⁷

SEC Form Ds run through February 2022, then stop; the company’s February 2022 total, “over $380 million,” matches that reporting.²⁵ No In-Q-Tel check turned up. Marc Andreessen, on Joe Rogan’s show in May 2026, called Flock “one of our companies” and did not mention Altman, Tan, or Y Combinator.²⁸

This is tedious, for sure. But we must follow the money and the power. The money is venture capital; the power is the camera on the pole.

The Product And The Fourth Amendment Argument

For years Flock told the public its technology “cannot recognize, identify, or track individuals.”²⁹

U.S. patent US11416545B1, granted August 16, 2022, tells a different story. Title: “System and method for object-based query of video content captured by a dynamic surveillance network.” Inventors: Garrett Langley and Matt Feury. Assignee: Flock Group Inc. Priority May 1, 2018; filed October 4, 2020. Those papers were already on this site.^{36 38}

The abstract says:

“A solution for a video surveillance system and method that leverages a dynamic geographic footprint and supports an object-based query of archived video content is described. An exemplary embodiment of the solution receives video footage from any number of unrelated sources. The video footage is parsed for content and stored in a database in connection with data that identifies the content (object class, aspects of the object, confidence scores, time and location data, etc.). Advantageously, the video footage may be queried based on the content of the video footage and not just time and location data.”³⁶

The body of that patent says neural nets (AI) classify an identified object and its aspects. The example is this: “the object is a human, is male, is wearing a jacket, and is about 5’11” and 190 pounds.” Unrelated sources include neighborhood cameras, store cameras, traffic cameras, and “a smartphone associated with a pedestrian.” In the patent’s own burglary scenario, investigators “may be able to query the DSOQ system for any footage … having a person with matching face recognition data points.”³⁶

That is exactly what the patent describes.

Wired, on August 19, 2026, reported a new police tool, first called Nightshift and then OS Investigate, that does both: more than 6,000 communities, twenty billion plate scans a month, about 140,000 monthly users, sixty-nine canned prompts, and forty-five tools. Plates become names, addresses, and associates. Fourteen of the prompts need no plate, no name, and no crime as a starting place. The officer supplies a place, a time, and a behavior, and the system hands back the people who fit.²⁹ Flock says the product is in a small test group. How many agencies have it live is not in this record.

Jay Stanley of the ACLU’s Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project told Wired the tools give police broad, often warrantless access to a vast movement record, and that the Fourth Amendment applies when police demand those records from a company. Here the departments buy the capability.²⁹

That is Stanley’s argument, but Flock carefully dodges claims that it has violated the Fourth Amendment.

What the record does talk about is use. A Texas officer searched 83,000 cameras for a woman after a self-administered abortion (404 Media, via Wired).²⁹ The Washington Post found 50 officers accused or charged of plate-reader misuse; twenty-six were tracking wives, girlfriends, or exes, and a later recap names a chief who ran more than 600 lookups of an ex and a daughter.^{29 30} The Electronic Frontier Foundation found about 20 percent of more than 12 million searches logged only “investigation,” “suspect,” or “query,” with more than 50 agencies searching protest activity.²⁹

Illinois regulators found, in August 2025, that Flock violated state law by a now-paused pilot that handed Customs and Border Protection access to cameras in the state.²⁹ Langley’s July 2026 line, “No, we do not work with ICE,” sits against that record.³¹

Flock leaves most rules to its customers.²⁹ The company claims a 30-day default delete and, from a TED stage, that “three law enforcement officers were arrested” last year off audit logs.^{28 31}

Over 5,000 cities have the cameras, and at least 54 cities in 23 states canceled, did not renew, or rejected the product in 2026.³² Photographing every car and storing the movement file is the product, not a side effect.

Terrorists Attacking Flock?

The 2025 rant and the 2026 apology are not the same voice on the same day. The apology dates the first one, but it does not erase it.

In 2025, on a podcast called Breaking Points, Langley called DeFlock a “terroristic organization… closer to Antifa than they are anything else.”³⁰ DeFlock is Will Freeman’s open-source map of public Flock cameras.³¹

In December 2025, Langley emailed law-enforcement clients that Flock and its partners were “under coordinated attack,” and that activist groups were turning the public-records process into “a weapon against you and against us.” After 404 Media published police-surveillance data, Flock said the critics were “activists trying to let murderers go free.”³³

Jay Stanley answered on January 16, 2026, under the headline “Flock CEO Goes Ballistic on Critics.” If you worry about mass surveillance, Stanley wrote, you support criminals. “It is a simplistic, juvenile, and ultimately authoritarian stance.”³³

A customer cop had to remind him. Staunton, Virginia, Chief Jim Williams released the email and wrote back that local citizens were raising concerns: “It is democracy in action.”³³

On July 17, 2026, Thomas Brewster at Forbes printed the repair. Langley said, “My comments were a mistake, and I apologize,” and that “We believe in a world where we can have safety and privacy.”³¹

Note that the apology came after the cancellation wave. On a TED stage, Langley said, “Safety is a fundamental right.”³⁴ Journalist Connor Boyack named that line as “the tyrant’s sales pitch.” ³⁵

On the weekend of August 22, 2026, Langley sat with Kayleigh McEnany on Fox News’s “Saturday in America.” Fox framed the product as automated license plate readers. He called for a national “compromise”:

“When people talk about just one of these, privacy or safety, they’re prioritizing the wrong thing, and what we have to prioritize as a country is compromise.”

“How do we have our safety, and how do we balance privacy?”³⁷

He recommended seven-day data retention and audit tools, and said regulators should hold law enforcement accountable rather than ban the technology. His Fox claims of over a million investigations and more than 10,000 missing people are his, not facts established in the record.³⁷

“Uphold The Law” While Blind To The Fourth Amendment

Here is my third question: how can Langley justify working with law enforcement to “uphold the law” when he is blind to the U.S. Constitution, which still stands with the Fourth Amendment?

You can catch a thief while breaking the law, but you cannot enforce the law by breaking it. An illegal search can find the gun; that is a result, not enforcement of the law. If the search is illegal, what it finds can be thrown out. Lawyers call that the fruit of the poisonous tree.

On Flock, the contradiction is the company’s, not the mapper’s. Photographing every car, sharing across state lines where a statute forbids it, letting a chief run his ex 600 times, hunting a woman through 83,000 cameras: those are the named breaks. Calling that “solving crime” is the pitch, with safety as the stand-in for legality. On Fox, he said the country must compromise. Compromise on what the Fourth Amendment clearly states?

Watch what they do, not what they say.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is this. Flock went through Y Combinator in 2017 and was later scaled by venture capital money from arch-Technocrats like Thiel and Andreessen. The Flock founders were studio operators, not police. The 2022 patent describes object-based query and, in its own scenario, a search by face-recognition data points. The public line said the tech cannot identify individuals. The 2025 CEO called citizens who mapped his public cameras a terroristic organization closer to Antifa, then apologized once cities canceled. The product photographs every car. The Constitution is not a setting the customer, the police, or Flock can switch off.

As I said above, no court has held that Flock broke the Fourth Amendment, but that is not a clean bill of health; it is a gap in the case law. The facts are already enough for a city council to press charges.

This is local work demanding local action. Ask your council whether it bought the cameras, who can query them, who they share them with, and whether a case number is required. If the contract is up, vote it down; if it is not up, do not renew it. Use the public-records process he called a weapon, and speak in the open. No guns. No knives. No blunt instruments. Mapping and protesting a public pole is Free Speech. Sawing one down will get you arrested, but many are willing to go to jail to stop the surveillance.

Fifty-four cities and counties have already said no, meaning that your city or town can say no, too.

On my desk are two texts separated by seventy-five years and joined by a single idea. The first is a physical object: Henry A. Porter’s Roosevelt and Technocracy, published by a small Los Angeles house in 1932, in which a self-described “Nationally known Economist and Financial Analyst” urged the incoming president to accept “dictatorial powers in the approaching crisis,” dismiss the machinery of representative government, and install Technocrats from top to bottom.¹

The second exists only as archived pixels: Unqualified Reservations, the blog Curtis Yarvin began writing in 2007 under the name Mencius Moldbug, in which a San Francisco software engineer urged Americans to accept that democracy had failed, that the government should be run by a chief executive with the powers of a monarch, and that the officer class of the new regime should be drawn from the people who know how to build things, e.g., Technocrats.²

Who cares about Curtis Yarvin? Well, arch-Technocrat Peter Thiel reveres Yarvin as his “house philosopher.” J.D. Vance, as a protégé of Thiel, has repeatedly quoted Yarvin’s ideas over an extended period. Specific Yarvin policies, like RAGE, have been explicitly enacted during the Trump Administration. Yarvin matters!

Warning: Some strong language at the end

I have spent years with the first text, and the more time I spend with the second, the more convinced I become that they are the same essay written twice — once in the vocabulary of the engineer, once in the vocabulary of the startup founder.

Some precision about names is required first, because the genealogy is loose in the popular telling. Yarvin did not coin the phrase “Dark Enlightenment”; the British philosopher Nick Land did, in a 2012 essay of that title that described, systematized, and extended what Yarvin had been writing for five years.³ Yarvin’s own name for his school of thought was “neoreaction.” Nor is there any documented organizational pipeline running from Howard Scott’s Technocracy Inc. to Yarvin’s movement; no membership rolls handed down, no succession of institutions. The connection is of the kind I have traced elsewhere between the Technocracy movement and the Cold War defense intellectuals: a continuity of ideas, incubated in the same elite class and reactivated by the same conditions.

The Dark Enlightenment stands to the 1930s Technocracy movement roughly as the Cold War technostructure did — a descendant that would indignantly deny the ancestry, and whose family resemblance is for that reason all the more instructive. It is the recurring conviction that the deliberative institutions are obsolete machinery, and that the people who demonstrably make complex systems work have a superior claim to run the state.

What makes the comparison exact rather than merely suggestive is that both programs converge on the same man. Porter made his offer prospectively: writing in the middle of the winter of 1932–33, he prophesied collapse in numbered steps, culminating in “FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT — Dictator,” and argued that supreme and emergency power vested in “some one man who has the confidence and respect of a majority” was the necessary passage to Technocracy.⁴

Yarvin makes the same argument retrospectively. Across his writing, and as recently as his January 2025 interview with the New York Times, he has held up Roosevelt as his central American precedent: the president who, in Yarvin’s telling, governed as an elected monarch; commanding a compliant Congress, ruling through new agencies staffed by his own people, adored rather than resisted.⁵ Yarvin does not offer this history as a warning. He offers it as proof of concept.

The presidency, he argues, contains a throne. Roosevelt sat in it. The republic loved him for it. Therefore, the next occupant may sit in it too, this time with a better org chart.

Porter is the prophecy, Yarvin is the application.

Set side by side, the two programs share a complete logical skeleton. Both begin by declaring the existing system not merely failing but already fake. For Porter and the Technocrats, the price system and the Congress that served it were obsolete machinery, kept running past their natural death by “political maneuvering and financial chicanery.”⁶

For Yarvin, electoral democracy is a facade behind which an unelected consortium of universities, media, and permanent bureaucracy actually governs. He calls this “the Cathedral.” ⁷ Both then conclude that the remedy is formal, concentrated, personal power: better an open executive than a hidden oligarchy. Both are explicit that the strongman is not the destination but the instrument — scaffolding for the installation of a new administrative class of Technocrats.

Porter wanted his dictator to appoint Technocrats from top to bottom; Yarvin wants his chief executive to retire the entire civil service — his old acronym was RAGE, “Retire All Government Employees” — and restaff the state with founders and engineers.⁸ And both close with the same soothing clause: Porter’s dictator holds “the confidence and respect of a majority of the American people,” while Yarvin’s monarch answers to a board and can be removed like any failing CEO. In each case the reassurance is hollow, and in each case it is the weakest joint in the structure, for reasons the actual history of the 1930s supplies.

Even the legitimating figure is the same figure, updated for a new economy. In 1932 the engineer stood at the peak of his cultural authority: he had electrified the continent, raised the dams and the skyscrapers, and could plausibly claim to be the one man in American life who demonstrably made things work while the politicians talked.

The Technocracy craze and Porter’s book converted that authority into a political claim. In the 2010s and 2020s the startup founder occupies precisely that position: the builder of platforms and rockets, the one figure who visibly ships while institutions deliberate. Yarvin’s innovation was to convert that authority into a political claim, and his prescription — run the government “like a startup,” with a founder-CEO wielding undivided authority — is Porter’s prescription with the slide rule swapped for the term sheet.

Ninety years apart, the same professional class petitions for the same commission on the same grounds: that competence should replace consent.

The differences are as instructive as the parallels. Scott’s Technocracy was, in its economics, radically anti-capitalist. It proposed to abolish the price system outright and to replace money with energy accounting, which is one reason respectable America could flirt with it only briefly.⁹

Yarvin inverts the economics completely. His “gov-corp” is capitalism absolutized — the state reimagined as a joint-stock corporation, sovereignty as equity, citizens as customers. Private property should be turned over to the gov-corp to manage.

Technocracy dreamed of rule by a faceless technical committee; Yarvin, whose intellectual debts run to Carlyle rather than Veblen, insists on a person, a sovereign, a name. The temperaments differ accordingly: Technocracy was scientistic and positivist, all charts, surveys, and thermodynamics, while the Dark Enlightenment is literary.

The movements’ social forms differ too — Technocracy was a genuine mass movement, with lecture halls, membership sections, and gray uniforms, where neoreaction was born on a blog and traveled through elite patronage, most prominently Peter Thiel’s.¹⁰ And the surrounding weather differs most of all. Porter wrote amid twenty-five percent unemployment and a banking system in genuine collapse; the emergency was not rhetorical. Yarvin writes amid prosperity and polarization, and must therefore manufacture the sense of terminal crisis that 1932 supplied free of charge.

Yet the reception histories rhyme in the way I have come to expect from this material. Porter’s book sank without a review worth finding; within months its title had yoked Roosevelt to a word that had passed from front page to vaudeville punchline, and the book became a fossil.

But the technocratic type was absorbed into the New Deal almost immediately — Tugwell in the Brain Trust, Arthur Morgan on the Tennessee Authority, the planners in a dozen new agencies — so that the idea lost as a constitutional proposition in the very season it won as a personnel policy.

Yarvin’s trajectory inverts the tempo but repeats the shape. His blog was a fringe curiosity for fifteen years, and then the absorption began: a sitting vice president has cited him by name,¹¹ his RAGE proposal was widely recognized as a template for the mass federal workforce removals of 2025,¹² and mainstream interviewers now travel to ask him whether democracy is finished.

There remains the historical question on which the whole comparison turns, and here I part company with both of my subjects. Yarvin’s proof-of-concept, like Porter’s prophecy, requires that March 1933 be read as the moment America accepted a monarch. It was not, and the distinction is not trivial — it is the entire point. Offered exactly the crown Porter described, in exactly the crisis he prescribed, Roosevelt took extraordinary powers through Congress rather than over it: statutory, revocable, and litigated.

The stock exchanges closed and reopened; the banking act passed in hours;¹³ and two years later the Supreme Court struck down the centerpiece of the recovery program in Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States, and the president — adored, unprecedented, at the height of his mandate — complied.¹⁴ The forms held.

I keep returning to the pencil bracket in my copy — the mark some reader of 1933 set around the sentence offering Franklin D. Roosevelt a dictatorship. I once assumed the bracket belonged to a closed chapter, a curiosity from the era my research covers. I no longer believe that. The technocratic temptation is not a chapter but a recurring season: it arrives whenever a confident technical class meets a discouraged democracy, in 1932 wearing the engineer’s gray flannel, in 2012 posting under a pseudonym, and in our own decade briefing statesmen.

Porter and Yarvin, the obscure analyst and the celebrated blogger, mark two visitations of the same scenario, and the question the bracket asks has not changed in ninety years: whether a frightened or merely frustrated republic can borrow the competence of its builders without handing them the government.

Twice now, America’s answer has been to take the builders and refuse the crown. The Dark Enlightenment is, at the bottom line, a wager that the third time will be different.

Porter was an obscure figure rising out of the financial industry in 1932. Yarvin is a pedestrian philosopher who rose from Silicon Valley in the 2010s. It’s the same playbook to create a coup to implement Technocracy. Reject it all.

On April 28, 2026, the United Arab Emirates announced its withdrawal from OPEC, effective May 1, ending nearly six decades of membership in the oil cartel that has governed global energy markets since 1960. The announcement was brief. The implications are historic. What the UAE did on that date was not merely resign from an organization. It served formal notice that the architecture of global energy commerce — the petrodollar system that has underwritten American financial hegemony since the Nixon era — is being dismantled and replaced.¹

The timing tells the story. The Strait of Hormuz has been under effective Iranian blockade since February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury against Iran and assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tanker traffic through the Strait dropped approximately 70 percent. Oil prices shattered the $100-per-barrel threshold. The ceasefire negotiations that followed have been a rolling catastrophe — agreements made and immediately broken, tolls demanded, mines in the water, and a U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports creating what analysts have called a “dual blockade.” Against this backdrop, the UAE did not wait for resolution. It moved.

The UAE’s exit is not an act of panic. It is the culmination of a decade of deliberate strategic positioning — in infrastructure, in finance, in artificial intelligence, and in the emerging Technocratic architecture I have been documenting for years. Understanding why the UAE wins regardless of how the Hormuz crisis resolves, and why its departure from OPEC accelerates the IMEC corridor project that Trump has called “one of the greatest trade routes in all of history,” requires seeing all the pieces simultaneously.

A Cartel Built for a World That No Longer Exists

OPEC was not merely a producers’ club. It was the institutional backbone of the petrodollar system — the arrangement, constructed in the early 1970s after Nixon closed the gold window, by which oil was priced and settled in U.S. dollars globally. Every nation on earth that needed oil had to hold dollar reserves to buy it. That perpetual demand for dollars allowed Washington to finance deficit spending across decades without the inflationary consequences that would otherwise have followed. OPEC was the guarantee mechanism. So long as its members priced in dollars, the dollar remained irreplaceable.

The UAE joined OPEC in 1967 through the emirate of Abu Dhabi, before it existed as its own country, and remained a member through its formal establishment in 1971.³ For nearly six decades, the UAE worked within OPEC’s framework — accepting production quotas, negotiating pricing floors, and participating in the institutional management of global oil supply. At its height of OPEC membership, the UAE was the cartel’s third-largest producer, accounting for roughly 12 percent of overall supply.⁴

But OPEC’s quota system was built for a world where Gulf crude flows freely through the Strait of Hormuz, gets priced in dollars, and settles through correspondent banking rails connected to the Federal Reserve system. That world has been under sustained attack since February 2026. The UAE’s ADNOC has been targeting 5 million barrels per day of production capacity by 2027 — a target structurally incompatible with quota discipline imposed by a cartel whose calculations are premised on Hormuz remaining open. The UAE Energy Minister put it plainly: the exit was the right move for the country’s national interests.⁵

The cartel’s slow-motion dissolution has been underway for years. Qatar departed in 2019. Ecuador followed. Indonesia suspended membership. Angola exited in 2023. But the UAE’s departure is categorically different — it is the departure of a founding-era member and the third-largest producer in the middle of a war, stripping the cartel of both volume and credibility simultaneously.⁶

The Strait of Hormuz: Weapon and Vulnerability

The Hormuz crisis has exposed the central structural weakness of the petrodollar architecture with a clarity that no academic paper could replicate. When the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury on February 28, 2026, Iran responded with the one weapon it has always held in reserve: closing the strait. The consequences were immediate and severe.⁷

Over 150 ships anchored outside the Strait. Qatar declared force majeure at Ras Laffan, removing approximately 20 percent of global LNG supply from the market. European natural gas prices surged 63 percent in a week. The ceasefire negotiations that followed demonstrated that Iran has no intention of surrendering its leverage. Tehran’s counter-proposal explicitly demanded international recognition of Iranian sovereignty over the Strait — making permanent what had been a military assertion.²²

Iran’s parliament moved simultaneously to codify the strategy in law: a bill barring vessels from hostile nations and imposing tolls on all others. This is not a nation preparing to yield its most powerful strategic asset. The Strait is Iran’s nuclear deterrent equivalent — the threat whose credibility it demonstrated at enormous cost to itself, and whose formal institutionalization now signals that intermittent closure, harassment, and toll extraction are the permanent new normal.²³

The UAE read this correctly — and had already built its response.

Fujairah: The Bypass Built Before the Crisis

A decade before the first American bomb fell on Iran, Abu Dhabi made a strategic decision that most oil analysts dismissed as over-engineering: it built the Habshan-Fujairah pipeline, running 380 kilometers from inland oil fields to the port of Fujairah on the Gulf of Oman. Fujairah is the only UAE emirate positioned entirely outside the Strait of Hormuz. The pipeline’s explicit purpose was to make Hormuz irrelevant to UAE export operations.⁹

When the crisis hit, the pipeline was ready. Crude loadings from Fujairah averaged approximately 1.9 million barrels per day in late March 2026 — a 57 percent increase from the 2025 average. Without that bypass infrastructure, the Hormuz closure would have crippled the UAE’s export capacity entirely. Instead, it demonstrated exactly what Abu Dhabi had designed it to demonstrate: the UAE can export oil when the strait is closed.⁸

Iran attacked Fujairah with drones. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline was struck too, cutting throughput by roughly 700,000 barrels per day. The bypass routes are not invulnerable. But they are operational, they are expanding, and every dollar invested in their capacity represents a dollar’s worth of permanent strategic independence from Hormuz.²⁵

The strategic logic is iron-clad: if Hormuz returns to free navigation, the UAE pumps at full capacity through both routes and leads the world in post-crisis production growth. If Hormuz remains unreliable — whether through Iranian military action, Iranian toll extraction, or the now-permanent geopolitical risk premium — every cargo routed through Fujairah rather than the strait is revenue accruing to UAE infrastructure. Iran’s leverage weakens with every tanker that reroutes. Oxford Economics put it precisely: “The war has also accelerated investments in bypass routes. So other countries are re-routing. That means that Iran, and its main strategic leverage, weakens.”²⁴

The UAE wins either way. That is not luck. That is architecture.

World Liberty Financial and the Spy Sheikh’s $500 Million Bet

To understand the full strategic picture, you must understand what happened four days before Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan — the UAE’s national security adviser, brother to UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed, and the man Western intelligence services call the “Spy Sheikh” — secretly purchased a 49 percent stake in World Liberty Financial, the Trump family’s cryptocurrency venture, for $500 million. The deal was signed by Eric Trump and never publicly disclosed.^{10 11}

Tahnoun is not a passive investor. He chairs MGX, the $100 billion AI fund. He heads G42, the UAE’s AI and surveillance technology conglomerate. He chairs ADQ’s $25 billion U.S. data center partnership. He is the architect of Abu Dhabi’s technological and financial future — and he purchased nearly half of the infrastructure that would become the settlement layer for the new global economy.¹²

Within months of the WLF acquisition, Tahnoun’s company MGX deployed $2 billion in USD1 stablecoins through the Binance investment — executed in Dubai, settled in WLF’s own payment token. This was the first sovereign-scale deployment of USD1 on earth. It was not a speculative bet. It was an activation. The UAE’s national security chief turned on the new financial system in his own city, using his own capital, on the infrastructure he part-owns.

Then, on February 18, 2026, WLF Tokenization launched at Mar-a-Lago. Its commodity division explicitly tokenizes oil, gas, cotton, and timber through partnerships with Apex Group, using Securitize as the tokenization platform — the same platform that powers BlackRock’s BUIDL fund, the world’s largest tokenized Treasury fund.¹³

The implications for the petrodollar are direct and unavoidable. OPEC membership carried an implicit obligation: price and settle oil through the dollar-denominated international banking system. By exiting OPEC and simultaneously holding a near-majority stake in a platform that tokenizes oil and settles transactions in USD1 stablecoins on a private blockchain, the UAE has constructed a petrodollar bypass — not a petrodollar replacement. USD1 is dollar-pegged. The dollar’s utility as a unit of account is preserved. What is eliminated is the institutional architecture that gives Washington leverage: the SWIFT network, the correspondent banking rails, the Federal Reserve pipeline through which dollar sanctions flow. You cannot sanction what does not route through your system.

IMEC: The Corridor Waiting for Its Green Light

The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor — IMEC — was announced at the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9, 2023, signed by India, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, France, Germany, Italy, and the European Union. Trump called it “one of the greatest trade routes in all of history.” He was right about the scale, if not the beneficiaries.^{16 20}

IMEC is not a diplomatic concept. It is operational. Its eastern sea lane connects Indian ports at Mundra, Kandla, and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust to UAE terminals at Fujairah, Jebel Ali, and Abu Dhabi. From there, the northern corridor continues by rail across Saudi Arabia through Ghuwaifat and Haradh, into Jordan, and on to the Israeli port of Haifa — now controlled by the Indian firm, Adani Ports. From Haifa, cargo crosses the Mediterranean to Greece or Italy and onward into Europe. The UAE’s Etihad Rail has already connected the Saudi border to Fujairah through all seven emirates, establishing the first operable cross-border rail link in the GCC.¹⁷¹⁸

Construction of key rail lines, ports, and highway segments officially began in April 2025. India and the UAE signed a Framework Agreement to operationalize corridor logistics in February 2024. The EU-India trade deal signed in January 2026 injected additional momentum. The corridor is being built right now, while the world watches the smoke rising over the Strait of Hormuz.¹⁹

Observe the geography. Fujairah — the UAE’s Hormuz bypass port and IMEC’s primary UAE node — sits outside the Strait by design. IMEC’s architects did not place Fujairah in the corridor by accident. They placed it there precisely because it is the one UAE port that operates regardless of what Iran does with the strait. The corridor was built to survive Hormuz. The UAE’s OPEC exit removes the last institutional constraint on operating it at full capacity.

Trump, the Board of Peace, and the Privatized Corridor

Biden’s version of IMEC was a state project — multilateral, rooted in formal diplomacy, accountable in principle to elected legislatures. Trump’s version is something fundamentally different. As I documented in The New Economics of Technocracy, the corridor has been privatized from end to end under Trump’s administration. The architects are not governments but sovereign wealth funds. The governing body for the corridor’s critical southwestern terminus is not a multilateral treaty organization but the Board of Peace — a privately constituted entity chaired by a single individual. The financial settlement layer is not the dollar flowing through the Federal Reserve system but USD1, a privately issued stablecoin owned by the corridor’s architects. The settlement infrastructure is not SWIFT but the blockchain.²¹

The Board of Peace, signed into existence at Davos on January 22, 2026, is the administrative instrument for Gaza’s reconstruction. Gaza sits at the Mediterranean coast directly south of Haifa — IMEC’s key Israeli port node. A rebuilt Gaza with a new deepwater port, airport, and special economic zone, administered by the Board of Peace and integrated into the Abraham Accords normalization architecture, is not a separate development from IMEC. It is the corridor’s southwestern extension. The territory being cleared, administered, and rebuilt sits directly astride the route IMEC’s designers need to control.

Jared Kushner designed the diplomatic preconditions for this entire architecture. He brokered the Abraham Accords in 2020 — the normalization agreements between Israel and the Gulf states that made IMEC conceptually possible. He left government, founded Affinity Partners, and raised $2 billion from Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, $1.5 billion from Qatar’s Investment Authority and Abu Dhabi-based Lunate — the same Gulf sovereign entities that are cornerstone investors in IMEC infrastructure. He co-authored the Gaza reconstruction masterplan. He sits on the Board of Peace executive board. The man who designed the diplomatic architecture is financially positioned in the commercial architecture it enables. That is not a coincidence. It is a business model.

Steve Witkoff — WLF co-founder, Trump’s Middle East envoy, and the man whose son Zach currently serves as WLF’s CEO — told Tucker Carlson in March 2025, six months before the Board of Peace was publicly proposed, that the Gulf needed a U.S.-backed “security wrapper” to make investments bankable. That security wrapper is now provided by 20,000 International Stabilization Force troops operating under CENTCOM authority — the enforcement layer for a financial architecture whose payment token is owned by Witkoff’s family company. Follow the chain.

Trump himself approved the Pax Silica coalition — the State Department initiative that exports the full American AI technology stack to trusted partners. The UAE signed on January 14, 2026, gaining preferential access to advanced semiconductors, AI compute infrastructure, and frontier models. Biden had restricted these exports on national security grounds. Trump reversed every restriction. The UAE got its chips. The UAE got its stablecoin ownership. The UAE got its IMEC corridor. And now the UAE has freed itself from OPEC.²⁶

The Tokenization Layer: Owning the Settlement Infrastructure

Asset tokenization is not incidental to this story. It is the mechanism by which the entire architecture operates. As I demonstrated at length in The New Economics of Technocracy, WLF Tokenization is the settlement layer for IMEC — the system that converts physical commodities, real estate, and trade flows into blockchain-recorded tokens that can be bought, sold, and settled in USD1 anywhere on earth, outside the traditional banking system, on a platform controlled by its private architects.^{13 14}

The Securitize platform that powers WLF’s tokenization also powers BlackRock’s BUIDL fund and serves as the NYSE’s designated digital transfer agent for its new Digital Trading Platform. This is not a fringe experiment. This is institutional-grade financial infrastructure being deployed at scale — connected to the world’s largest asset manager, the world’s oldest stock exchange, and the Trump family’s private financial vehicle, all through the same technical backbone.

The UAE’s interest in this system is structural, not speculative. Islamic finance prohibits interest-bearing transactions but permits fee-based transactions. USD1 is fee-based by design — it earns yield for its issuer through Treasury reserves, but transactions between counterparties are fee-based rather than interest-based. This makes it Sharia-compliant by structure, without requiring a fatwa or religious authority. The entire Gulf sovereign wealth apparatus — managing capital under Islamic finance principles — can adopt this system without cultural or legal friction. The convergence of Technocratic asset-based economics and Islamic finance is not coincidental; it is structural, and the UAE’s OPEC exit accelerates the adoption of the settlement architecture that benefits from it.

The Strategic Verdict: UAE Wins Regardless

The question now being asked in every energy ministry, every sovereign wealth office, and every geopolitical think tank is simple: did the UAE exit OPEC because it believes Iran will permanently lose control of the Strait, or because it has built a bypass that makes Hormuz irrelevant to its commercial interests?

The answer is: both, and neither matters. The UAE has built a winning position in every scenario.

If Iran’s military capacity is permanently degraded and Hormuz returns to free navigation, the UAE pumps at full ADNOC capacity into a high-priced market, free of OPEC quota constraints, with its corridor infrastructure positioned to capture the lion’s share of India-to-Europe trade flows. Its tokenization platform settles the commodity transactions. Its AI infrastructure provides the logistics intelligence. Its stablecoin architecture captures the financial flows. The UAE becomes the hub of the twenty-first century trade order.

If Iran retains sufficient capacity to threaten Hormuz intermittently — the more likely scenario, given Tehran’s explicit moves to institutionalize toll extraction and formal sovereignty claims over the strait — the UAE’s Fujairah bypass captures the risk premium that every cargo operator will pay to avoid the gauntlet. Iran’s leverage weakens with every rerouted tanker. Every dollar of Fujairah bypass revenue is a dollar that did not flow through an Iranian-controlled chokepoint. The UAE monetizes the very disruption it cannot prevent.

The IMEC corridor operates in both scenarios — through Fujairah in the bypass scenario, through restored Gulf sea lanes in the resolution scenario. The tokenization settlement layer operates in both scenarios. The AI infrastructure operates in both scenarios. The Board of Peace governance architecture for Gaza’s corridor extension operates in both scenarios.

This is what a decade of deliberate strategic positioning looks like when the crisis it was designed to survive actually arrives.

The Warning That Must Not Be Ignored

There is a dimension to this story that the architects of this system have taken great care never to discuss publicly, and that analytical honesty requires stating plainly.

The UAE wins. But the question of who inside the UAE wins is a different question entirely. The Fujairah bypass, the IMEC corridor, the WLF tokenization platform, the USD1 settlement layer — none of this infrastructure was built by or for the Emirati people. It was built by and for a sovereign apparatus anchored in one man: Tahnoun bin Zayed, who answers to no electorate and is accountable to no democratic institution. The infrastructure that insulates the UAE from Hormuz dependency is the same infrastructure that makes the UAE a principal node in the Technocratic control corridor being built from India to Europe.

I have defined Technocracy consistently for over a decade: it is a system of governance in which scientists, engineers, and technical experts replace elected representatives, and in which resource allocation and behavioral control replace price mechanisms and democratic consent. IMEC is Technocracy in its infrastructure phase. A public-private partnership model in which state diplomacy creates the framework and private capital executes it. A managed corridor in which goods, energy, and data flow through systems monitored and controlled by whoever operates the technical infrastructure. A digital layer — fiber cables, data centers, AI logistics platforms, blockchain settlement — that makes every transaction in the corridor legible to its operators. As I wrote in The New Economics of Technocracy, whoever controls the platform controls the asset.²⁷

The settlement layer is privately issued. The governance body is privately constituted. The financial instrument is privately owned. The infrastructure is being built on territories whose populations were never consulted and whose consent was never sought. The Technocratic Quad — AI, crypto, fossil fuel energy, real estate — is being assembled at scale in the Gulf, and the UAE is positioned at its intersection, not as the sovereign representative of a free people, but as the most consequential private node in a system that answers to no constitution, no electorate, and no divine law.¹⁵

The UAE exits OPEC on May 1, 2026. The petrodollar era does not end on that date — it has been ending for years, in the accumulation of tokenization platforms and blockchain settlement layers and sovereign wealth investments in private cryptocurrency infrastructure. But May 1 is the date the institutional confirmation arrived. The UAE has chosen its future. It is the future I have been warning about.
