The door closes behind her. The color she left in the chair across from me is the rust of dried blood on gauze, slow and heavy. Presenting anxious, dysregulated. It matches.

She can’t see it. I can.

Diane is at her desk when I open the door. The clock behind her reads 10:02. She looks up.

The color around her shoulders is a sad blue, the color of surgical scrubs. Not the pale sage I’m used to seeing.

“Everything okay out here?”

“Yeah.” She smiles. “Want to get lunch?”

“I’m good.”

I lean on the window behind her desk and wince. Six weeks post-surgery, the knee still catches under weight.

I look back up. Her color has not moved.

Later, between clients, I bring her some tea.

“You’ve seemed a little off today.” Warm. Measured. The tone I have used a thousand times.

Her whole body turns to me.

“Off how?”

“Just quieter, maybe.”

She considers this, obviously puzzled. Then she give gives a little laugh.

“Yeah, I’m good. Long weekend but I’m good. Why?”

The color has not moved. Still the same blue.

“No reason. Just wanted to check.”

“Thanks for the tea.”

Back in my office, door closed. The color did not shift when she smiled at me. Maybe she wasn’t being honest with me.

She is having an off day and does not know she is having one. That happens. I have seen it with people before.

I open my notes for the next session. My prescription falls out from my last doctor visit. A flash of concern runs through my body. I tuck the note hastily into my pocket and try to prepare for my next visit.

My 2 o’clock cancels. I decide to walk to the shop on the corner. My knee has been tight all day, but it’s finally getting some relief.

I buy a sandwich and sit at the table. I’ve been starving all day. It feels good to get some real food in my system.

Halfway through, I glance around.

The man behind the counter is bright yellow. Warm.

Outside, a woman walks past pushing a stroller. Pale gold. A man behind her, the same gold.

I stop chewing. Set the sandwich down.

I toss the wrapper and head back.

Diane looks up when I come in. The color around her shoulders is a pale sage.

I stop in the doorway.

“Everything okay?” she asks.

“Yeah. Just had a late lunch. Feeling much better now.”

I go to my office and close the door behind me. I sit in my chair with a slight frown.

The surgical blue on Diane at 10. The pale sage on her now.

But nothing obvious about her seems to have changed.

The office empties by seven. I stay. I pull the prescription back out of my pocket, which resurfaces my anxiety once again.

The lights on the floor above go out. The heat clicks off.

I grab my bag and start to head out.

As I cross Diane’s desk, her monitor is dark. I see my reflection is in the glass.

The color around me is the exact surgical blue I read on her at 10 this morning.

I was never seeing under her surface this morning. The colors were mine.

I knew people were like icebergs, their true state under the surface. But in my attempt to discern their feelings, I filled the gap with my own projections.

I know its teachings. Not just from study, but also from use. His doctrine shaped how I read a fortified wall, a formation, a battle before it started. I carried it into every engagement for the last eleven years.

As a captain in his army, I have felt fortunate to learn from the wisdom in its pages. But soon I would learn a lesson from him that extends past the pages of his manual.

I rest my hand on the battlements of the wall.

I have deep history with this wall. We paid for it with blood. 9 months ago I lost the most men I had in an engagement. And now we have taken it back. As I look down this stretch of the wall, I see the shadows of my old comrades. Tears come to my eyes. I wipe them quickly, then slam my fist on top of the stone in front of me.

Tonight the valley is dark below me. Torchlight moving — the enemy, counting their battalions and making their plans. I’m counting them too, preparing for the inevitable battle that’ll come tomorrow.

I glance down at my manual:

When outnumbered, a fortified position multiplies the defender. The man who abandons his wall abandons his biggest advantage.

I close the book, look up, and continue my count.

The messenger arrives at midnight.

Young, even for a messenger. He carries a letter with Calder’s seal. I break it open.

Straightforward with no preamble.

Abandon the eastern wall. Fall back to the river by first light. Leave no garrison. Do not engage.

I set it down slowly on the table, next to the open manual. Both in Calder’s hand, the same ink. One dense with everything he’d learned in thirty years of war, the other merely a quick scribble.

I look at the messenger. He is waiting nervously.

“Is there more?” I inquire.

He shakes his head.

My blood starts to boil. The river? We’d be exposed!

Calder’s own words tell me I should hold fast. Surely he didn’t understand the situation and made an error. Even brilliant generals make mistakes.

I turn sharply and wave the messenger away.

They approach the wall at dawn. My men are still here.

Hours of noise and blood and smoke. The first assault breaks. Then the second. Our men are outnumbered, but our height and fortifications multiply our efforts.

I knew it. The commander was wrong. Despite their numbers, we held our ground.

By midmorning the enemy withdraws. My men are shouting in victory.

Someone lights a fire and the smoke goes up in a column to convey a message: the eastern wall held.

2 miles out we wait for a response. Nothing. No answering smoke. No movement I can read.

The men are celebrating. The enemy is gone.

But no response from the river.

Commander Calder comes the next morning.

He rides to the wall. When he arrives the men cheer his name. He gives nods of encouragement and makes his way to my quarters.

When he arrives, I am grinning, waiting for my congratulations.

He looks at me blankly. He takes out a map and sets it on the table. He brushes the manual with his own name off the table to make room.

“Here.” He points across the river. “Here is where my army waited.”

It was a hill that overlooked the river. Any defending force would have a strong advantage with the height advantage and the water at the back of the enemy.

“The plan was to let their main force filter through the wall, then when we sprang the trap, they’d have the river and the wall to funnel through.”

Then he pointed to the enemy force garrison.

“Their scouts reported defenders at the walls,” he says. “Their commander held his main force back. He sent a probe. You only defeated the probe.”

The blood drains from my face.

“I was just following the manual,” I stutter.

He looks at me. Frustrated, but with compassion.

“Remember, the commander is more important than the commands.”

He picks up his map and walks back to his horse.

I look at the manual on the floor. The wall stands. The war continues.

Patience isn’t passive. It’s the most active thing you’ll ever do.

I used to think waiting meant stepping back and just letting it happen. I’ve now learned it’s showing up every day without a guarantee.

Grief is love with nowhere to put itself.

I sat with a relationship that didn’t become what I’d hoped, and it was frustrating. What other angle should I try to fix it?

Then someone told me it’s ok to move on, while still taking time to grieve what won’t perfectly be.

The smartest people are the ones willing to say “I don’t know.”

A manager of mine would confidently say this every week. As the “imposter” in the room, I’d be shocked. Can you do that? The answer is yes! People who pretend to know everything close doors. People who admit they don’t open them.

“Well,” she said to it, “that’s that I guess.”

It had been the new variety from the catalog, the one that was supposed to outperform the old. She had pampered it. She had read the little plastic stake out loud the day she planted it. She tipped the soil into the bucket and laid the plant on the bench beside the August tulip she had not yet thrown out.

Zone 14. Another red zone in the greenhouse.

She did not turn to the map immediately. The reality sometimes could sting.

She stood and turned to stare at it, hands on hips.

64 squares. Line items and totals, neat hand-lettered codes, a key in the lower right corner only she would ever read. 49 green. 13 yellow. 2 red.

“Well I guess it’s 3 now” she muttered.

The marker was capped beside the pen jar where she had left it. The reds were the south wall: humidity baffles, a temperature drift on the west bench. And now zone 14. The yellows were everything she would fix once the reds were green. The greens were stable and rarely visited.

Mallory sighed.

She walked briskly past the row of rose bushes at the end of the second row without a glance.

Later that day, Mallory sat at her laptop.

The brand-new Verdex 4 system had been at the top of her tabs for two days.

She nudged the trackpad and the page brightened: variable-pressure misting, next-generation soil moisture sensor array, app control on mobile.

She had the Verdex 3. It was the breakthrough model in November. The November receipt sat 14 emails down in her inbox, never opened. Below it, somewhere in the folder she had named Greenhouse and never touched, were 47 other receipts she could not number from memory.

“You know what,” she said to the screen as if she was negotiating with it, “this one has actual humidity feedback.”

The Verdex 3 also had humidity feedback. She knew this. She knew this the way she knew she should probably not upgrade. But the rush was sometimes too much to skip. The total was $1,847. Her eyes didn’t dwell there long. It’d arrive in only 4 days.

She laughed a short bark in place of an apology. She made the final click and closed the laptop hastily.

She told herself the red zones would be green by Friday.

Thursday she was on her knees in the second row, pulling out the irrigation she had laid in November. Clean line, no kinks, fittings still snug. She coiled it as she went and laid the coils in a pile by the door.

“Sorry, fella,” she told the line. “You did your job.”

The rose bushes stood between her and the south-wall stub-out. She had threaded line past them twice before. She knew the path.

A length of the old line had snagged in a rose bush. She jostled it. It swung back. She yanked harder.

It came free. A rose thorn slashed her thumb.

She pulled her hand away. A drop of blood was left behind on a rose petal.

She sat back on her heels, sucked her thumb, and muttered some colorful words through closed lips.

The rose was red. Not one from the supplier list. The petals were tighter than the ones she had ordered, the smell stronger and older, a real rose fragrance, the kind that made the airport gift shops smell like a joke.

The drop of blood sat on a petal near the rim.

She watched it. It did not slide. The petal held it like a small dish.

She put her face closer.

Her mother had kept a rose like this on the kitchen counter in summer. A single rose in a glass jar. The jar had been a peanut butter jar with the label soaked off in the sink. She’d hold the stem at the base, careful of the thorns, and would say, “Smell, honey.”

Mallory was reminded of that smell.

Her mom had been gone 4 years. She was the whole reason Mallory had started gardening in the first place.

She stayed on her knees a long time.

When she finally stood up her knees had imprints of soil and small leaves stuck to them. She brushed them with the heel of her hand.

She walked to the corner, hands on hips.

The folding chair was where it had always been, behind the table, behind the map. She had been using it as a coat rack for years.

She unfolded it and sat.

The map was behind her. The colors were unchanged. The capped marker and the pen jar sat on the table within an arm’s turn. She did not turn.

The tomatoes on the north wall, heavy and quiet. The lemon balm she had let go wild. The misting system hissed. The light coming through the panels was thin and warm, the color of golden hay.

She chuckled. “Mallory you old fool. You’ve been walking past the very thing you’re building.”

Today is a Covenant Day. An initiate is dressing three corridors away. The hall is being prepared for their ceremony.

The Highfather wakes before the bells. He sits at the table by the window. He holds spectacles in one hand, a pen in the other.

Morning light slants across the table as he works.

He’s waiting for the bells to ring.

I hear the bells start at the third hour.

I’m already dressed. My tunic is a bold red. The collar is stiff. I fiddle with the top button that’s choking me.

I say the oath under my breath. I say it again. My tongue stumbles on a syllable I cannot make sit right.

I drink a cup of water. My mouth stays dry.

They told us in training: the Highfather names your planet only at the end. Until then, I do not know what I am walking into. My new home could be loyal to the Order, or it could be on the fringes of known civilization.

My hands are cold. I press them flat against the table to warm them. I press them flatter, until the knuckles go white.

I run through every line one more time.

The bells finish ringing. It’s time to go.

The antechamber is small and warm. Light cuts across the room from the open window. On the bench sits the mentor ambassador who will walk me to the hall.

He is older than I expected. His robe is not freshly pressed like mine. His collar is open.

“There you are,” he says. “Sit a minute. The Father is running behind.”

The word lands wrong. I stay standing.

“It’s Highfather,” I say.

He looks up. His eyes are kind. “It is.”

“You said Father.”

“I did.”

“In the hall, you would —”

“In the hall I would not.” He smiles. “Sit. The bells will go again before he opens the door.”

I sit on the edge of the bench. My back is straight. I run the oath over in my head.

“You know your lines?” he asks.

“I know them.”

“Good. That’s better than nothing.”

I press my knees together to keep them still.

The bells go again. The doors open without sound. The mentor walks me to the threshold and steps aside. He does not come in, but gestures for me to enter.

The hall is long and high. Blue banners hang from the rafters, one for every world the Order has reached. Witnesses line the walls in blue and red robes. None of them look at me. They look at the seat at the far end.

The seat is empty.

I walk the length of the hall. My footsteps are the only sound. The mark where I am to kneel is a circle of white stones set into the grey floor. I reach it. I kneel. The cold comes through my knees.

I keep my eyes down. Protocol is to keep them down until the Highfather speaks.

I rehearse the opening line under my breath. I rehearse the syllable I always stumble on, and make my tongue land on it cleanly in my head.

A cough echoes through the room.

The seat is still empty.

The door to my left opens. The Highfather steps into the hall.

Protocol is for him to speak first. Then the candidate declares their name. Then the oath.

He speaks first.

He says my name.

He says it the way you great a dear friend.

I am supposed to declare. The line is ready in my mouth. I do not say it.

The Highfather says my name again, softer.

I look up.

He walks the length of the hall. He does not hurry. His robe does not snap.

I am still on the cold white stone.

He reaches me. He stops. He puts his arms around me, the way a father holds a child returning from a long trip. His robe smells of perfume and ink.

He holds me for two breaths. He steps back.

I look at him, bewilderment in my eyes.

He smiles, “Don’t you worry, we’ll get to the ceremony, which I’m sure you have dutifully prepared for.”

I blink. His grin deepens.

“As my ambassador, you are my family. That means our relationship comes first, the promises second.”

Something gives in my chest. Dozens of clenched muscles finally release.

I think of the mentor in the antechamber — his open collar, his easy voice. I had thought him careless. I now realize, he was at home.

“Now, let’s proceed with the ceremony. And don’t worry, if we make a mistake, we can restart.”

The words come easier now.

When we finish, he puts a hand on my shoulder. He lifts me to my feet and turns me toward the doors.

I walk back the length of the hall. The witnesses look at me this time, kind looks on their faces.

The mentor is at the threshold. He puts his hand on my back as I pass.

“I’m glad you finally got to meet him,” he says cheerfully.

I keep walking, dazed. “That is not how I imagined how it would go.”

The mentor turns to me. “I think that’s the same for most people. What was different for you?”

I pause. “I guess I didn’t expect him to care so much about me. I still feel the weight of representing the Order, but I’m not as scared about screwing up like before.”

He nodded knowingly. “Yes. You’ll find he’s very patient.”

We keep walking.

I stare down at my robes. My hand reaches for the top button to loosen the collar.

The mentor notices, smiles, and puts his arm around me.

I pick up the pad.

I look at it for a long time. Sadly, numbers do not move when you just stare at them. I know this. I keep staring anyway.

At this point, I doubt I could even get a job at the Wendy’s down the street.

Upstairs, the house is asleep. Becca. The kids. The baby will wake in 40 minutes and I will hear the small thump of her foot against the crib slat and then her sweet voice.

A glass of water sits next to my things. The ice is gone now. The glass is still cool against my palm when I pick it up. I do not drink. I set it back down.

Then I put the pad down too and lean back with closed eyes.

Looking longer is not going to change anything.

I think it’s time for my walk.

I take my hoodie from the hook by the back door.

The kitchen has started to feel small with how much time I’ve spent here.

I close the door behind me without latching it. The cold is sharp on my face. I stand on the step for a second to let my lungs find it.

I start walking.

I have walked this same route every morning for 22 days. East down Lassen to the corner with the broken streetlight. North along Maple past the brown house with the porch light that never goes off. Over the small bridge that crosses the stream. Back the same way.

It takes 47 minutes. I do not know why I started. The first morning I just needed to be outside. The second I went the same way because I had nothing better to do. By the fifth or sixth morning it was a numb routine.

I do not know why I keep doing it.

This morning is different.

The fog came in overnight. I do not see it until I am past Lassen and the broken streetlight has no halo around it, no bloom, just a small wet eye in the gray. The houses on Maple are gone. The porch light at the brown house is gone. Ten feet of sidewalk in front of me, then nothing.

I keep walking.

Inside my head the loop is going. It has been going all morning.

If I had not spoken up at the all-hands in January. If I had taken the call from John to switch departments. If I had been the kind of person who saw it coming sooner. If, if, if.

Outside my head, the sidewalk surfaces one square at a time. I step onto a square. The next square comes out of the gray. I step onto that one. The square after that is not there yet.

I do not notice that I am only being given one square at a time. All I notice that my hands are cold and I should have worn gloves.

I am on the bridge.

I know this because the sound of my steps changes. The dry tap of sidewalk turns to the dull knock of wood. I stop without meaning to. I look up.

A billboard sign is barely visible to my right.

I have walked past this billboard 22 times. I have not read it once. It is a low brown billboard on a steel post, the kind that advertises a dental practice or a recovery program. The fog has thinned just here. Not lifted. Just thinned. The words come out of the gray.

ONE STEP AT A TIME.

I look at it for a second. I keep walking.

Two steps later the words come back.

So does Becca’s voice from last night, soft against the pillow, almost gone into sleep.

I have complete confidence in you.

I had not believed her.

Something lands in my chest. Not a voice. Not a thought I have to think. A warmth, the kind that embraces you when you step inside a warm lodge after weathering the elements.

I have been doing it.

Getting up. Walking out. Coming back. Sending the next one.

I keep walking. The fog ahead does not lift. And I’m ok with it.

I’m home. The door clicks shut behind me. The kitchen is warm and bright.

Becca is at the table reading her bible, her usual morning routine. Her hair is still in its braid from last night.

She looks up and smiles, “Sammy is going to want to be carried down.”

“I’ll go get her,” I say.

I take my hoodie off. I hang it on the hook. The cold is still in the fabric.

My phone is on the counter. It is vibrating. I had left it inside.

I pick it up. The name on the screen is a name I had not expected. A recruiter I had emailed in March and stopped expecting to hear back from. The call is still going.

I look at Becca.

I press the green button. The next step.

My shoulders are up by my ears. I drop them. They come back.

The numbers might work. I have run them 3 times. Payroll should clear. I’ll be able to pay the contractors this month. The timeline is aggressive but real.

I am doing this for my family. I am doing this so my kids will not start where I started.

I click into the spreadsheet. The cursor lands in a cell I did not mean to touch. My mouth is dry.

I think about someday having enough income to finally be able to be more generous and serve.

I’ll get to that. Once this holds.

My heart tightens and I barely sleep that night.

It’s Sunday School today. The teacher is somewhere in Numbers, when Moses breaks open the rock to give his people water.

Moses has the same staff in hand that parted the Red Sea.

He’s using it again, but this time he struck first without consulting God.

I am half listening to the teacher. The payroll numbers from last night are being rerun in my head.

“So, where did Moses go wrong?”

A woman across the room raises her hand. Late 70s. Pink cardigan.

“Moses did have the blueprints for a plan, a good one too. He just forgot to include the Architect.”

The teacher nods in agreement. He continues the lesson.

While everyone turns their pages, my eyes start watering. I realize I’ve been doing it all wrong.

Monday night. 11:46. The lamp is on. The screen is dark.

I sit down. But I don’t open the spreadsheet first.

I fold my hands. My elbows are on the desk. My knees hit the carpet.

I have been building this without You. Please help me change that.

The room is quiet. My shoulders come down and stay there.

I open the spreadsheet. The cursor is in the same cell as two nights ago.

But my heart is at peace and the future looks brighter.

Not enough time to bake.

But he set it on the anvil and swung anyway. The hammer rang flat. He’d fix it on the next heat he thought.

Old Brennan, his first master, had folded steel forty times for a war blade. Aldric was doing twenty. He thought twenty could be enough if you struck clean and kept the forge hot.

The door scraped open. He didn’t look up.

“Aldric.” The steward leaned against the doorframe, dabbing his neck with a cloth that had once been white. He never stepped fully inside. “The king expects the sword by the harvest festival. Six weeks.”

“It’ll be ready.”

“Wonderful. Because Harren the Red has been telling anyone who’ll listen that he could do it in four.” The steward smiled the way a man smiles when he’s delivering bad news he enjoys. “The king does love a choice.”

“Harren couldn’t forge a belt buckle.”

“I’m sure you’re right.” He tucked the cloth into his sleeve and turned to go. “Six weeks, Aldric.”

Aldric plunged the steel back into the coals and pumped the bellows until the fire roared to a near unstable pitch.

Six weeks. Old Brennan’s famous blade, the one that hung in the great hall, had taken him a full year. Aldric would do it in six weeks. He’d do it better.

Behind him, his apprentice Tam lifted the quenching bucket and carried it to the trough. “Master, should I mix the brine? For the hardening?”

“Not yet.”

“I could start measuring the salt. How much do you—”

“Leave it. I’ll do it.”

Tam set the bucket down and tried to read the recipe from the shelf, but Aldric had never walked him through the ratios. The boy poured what he guessed was right. When Aldric glanced over, the mixture was cloudy, too thick with salt. He shoved Tam aside and dumped it out.

“That would have cracked the blade.”

“I didn’t know the—”

“Watch. You can learn by watching.”

Aldric was already back at the anvil, working too fast to explain. Tam sat on the bench by the wall and picked at a splinter in the wood.

The next morning Tam swept the floor and laid out the tongs in order of size, the way Aldric liked. He stood by the bellows when the fire needed air, pumped when Aldric nodded, stopped when he raised a hand.

At midday he tried again. “I could start on the grip. The leather wrapping. I know how to—”

“The grip comes last. You’d be wasting leather.”

“Then teach me something else. The filing. Anything.”

Aldric held a piece of steel up to the light and turned it, checking for flaws. “Not now, Tam. If I’m going to build faster than ever before, I can’t spare the time.”

Tam untied his apron. He folded it and set it on the bench. He placed his small hammer on top, handle facing out, the way he’d been taught to store tools.

He walked to the door.

“Where are you going?” Aldric said, still looking at the steel.

“The baker on Hill Street needs someone to tend the ovens.”

“A baker.” Aldric almost laughed. “You’re a smith’s apprentice.”

“I’m a boy who sweeps your floor.”

The door closed behind him. Aldric set the steel down, then picked it up again. He had four weeks left. He didn’t have time for the boy’s feelings.

Aldric pumped the bellows harder and got back to work.

Two weeks later, the blade looked right. Long and tapered, the edge showing promise. Aldric had skipped the second folding cycle and rushed the annealing, letting the steel cool in open air instead of buried in ash overnight. But the shape was there. The shape was good.

He heated it for the final quench. The steel glowed pale yellow, almost white. He pulled it from the coals with the long tongs and brought it to the brine. One clean motion. The brine hissed and boiled around the blade, steam rising in a white column to the ceiling.

He lifted it out. Held it up to the light from the window.

The blade was straight. The taper was clean. The edge caught the light and threw it back in a thin bright line. Aldric turned it slowly. His grip on the tongs loosened. He let out a breath of relief.

Then he saw it.

A crack ran through the spine of the blade, thin as a hair, but deep as the steel itself. It forked near the tip like a river splitting. The metal had been too stressed, cooled too fast, heated too many times without rest.

He set it on the anvil. It rang flat. Dead.

Aldric stood in the quiet forge. The fire popped. The crack stared up at him from the anvil, almost mockingly.

His eyes drifted to the bench by the wall. The apron still sat folded there. The small hammer on top, handle facing out.

Two weeks since Tam had walked out that door. Aldric hadn’t gone after him. Hadn’t asked around. He’d told himself the boy would come back on his own.

He looked at the bench again.

Not enough time to bake.

He found Tam behind the bakery on Hill Street, pulling loaves from a clay oven with a long wooden paddle. The boy’s arms were dusted with flour to the elbow. He looked up when Aldric’s shadow fell across the doorway, and his face went still.

“I don’t need a speech,” Tam said.

“Good. I don’t have one.” He picked up a handful of flour from the worktable and rubbed it between his fingers. “Your brine was too salty. For the quench.”

“I know. You told me.”

“I didn’t tell you the right amount. That’s what I should have done.”

Tam set the paddle down. He didn’t speak.

“It’s three fistfuls of salt to a full bucket,” Aldric said. “You stir it until the salt vanishes. If you can still see grains at the bottom, the water’s too cold. You warm it first.” He looked at the boy. “I should have shown you that the first week.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Aldric cast his eyes down “Because I thought I didn’t have time”

Tam wiped his hands on his apron. The baker’s apron, not the smith’s. “The blade?”

“Cracked. Dead. I accounted for everything except for one critical ingredient.”

The boy was puzzled. “What’s that?”

“Time.”

Tam felt the remorse from the master.

“Come back,” Aldric said. “I’ll teach you right. Every step.”

“And when you get busy again?”

“I won’t get too busy for you. We’ll do it right this time.”

Tam looked at the oven, then back at him. “I’ll think about it,” he said, and picked up his paddle.

Aldric nodded, then walked back to the forge alone.

The next morning, he lit the fire and laid out the tongs in order of size. He was sweeping the floor when the door scraped open. Tam stood in the doorway, wearing his old smith’s apron. He’d gone back for it.

Neither of them said anything. Tam picked up the bellows and pumped until the coals glowed white.

That afternoon, the steward’s voice came from the street. “The festival is in two weeks. Where is the sword?”

“It’s not ready,” Aldric said.

“The king will not wait. Harren the Red—”

“Harren will do a great job.”

The steward wrote something in his ledger and left.

Tam looked up from the bellows. Aldric nodded at the coal bed. “Too hot. Ease off.” The boy eased off.

They started with raw ore and a clean fire.

They folded the steel sixty times. Each fold heated, hammered flat, doubled over, heated again. The first week, Aldric set the tempo. Slow and methodical.

When it came time for the first quench, Tam mixed the brine himself. Three fistfuls of salt. Stirred until the grains vanished. Aldric watched and said nothing. There was nothing to correct.

Months passed. When the sword was finished, Aldric held it up in the light from the forge window. The blade caught the sun and held it. No cracks. No dead ring. When he tapped the flat, the steel sang clear and high.

He handed it to Tam. The boy held it with both hands, feeling the balance.

“That’s the one,” Aldric said.

The king already had his sword, thanks to Harren the Red. So they mounted the blade on the wall above the anvil, where the heat from the coals kept the metal warm. Word spread. Smiths came from other towns to see it. A swordsman rode two days just to hold it. The steward came too, cloth pressed to his neck, and stood in the doorway a long time without writing anything in his ledger.

People offered to buy it. Aldric always said no, though he offered to smith them something else. They’d ask what made this blade different. He never gave them much of an answer. Tam did, once, to a young apprentice who wouldn’t stop asking.

“We gave it the time it needed,” he said. “That’s all.”

They are twenty-five. They have the same job at the same company, more or less, and they make the same kind of money. They both became dads that year.

They sit on Tom’s back porch on a Sunday afternoon with a paper bag of donuts between them.

“I opened a Vanguard account,” Tom says. “I’m putting it all in the total market fund. Auto-transfer every two weeks. Thirty years, do not touch it, I am set.”

Benny picks at the corner of the donut bag. “I’m looking at a duplex over on Foster. House hack. I live in one unit, the other one pays my mortgage.”

Tom laughs. “You’d be a rundown landlord at twenty-five.”

“I’d be living for free at twenty-five.”

“Tenants are gonna call you at midnight.”

“Maybe. I’m going to get a property manager, find a deal that works to pay him and me.”

The donuts go fast. The sun drops behind the neighbor’s fence. They argue about whether the math works, whether their dad would approve. Then they ball up the bag and go inside.

Tom sets up the auto-transfer the next week. $200 every other Friday into the total market index fund. The expense ratio is so small he has to look it up twice. He does not think about it again.

A year passes. The number on the statement is bigger than what he put in.

Two years pass. He gets a raise. He bumps the auto-transfer to $500.

That year, the graph on his phone drops. He reads articles at three in the morning. He almost sells. He does not sell. By spring it is back.

He and his wife buy a house with a thirty-year mortgage and put 20% down.

Once a year he opens the laptop and rebalances. High on a stock index fund, low on a bond index fund. Simple. It takes him forty minutes. He likes the way the columns line up.

Another raise. He thinks about the new Lexus he’s been wanting. He bumps the auto-transfer instead.

More kids come. He finds a way to keep the financial margin constant.

Five years later, the graph drops and recovers in the same year. He does not sell. He has learned not to sell.

When he turns fifty-five, the number on the statement has six zeros where there used to be four. Tom has not watched it happen.

It is a Tuesday in March, eleven at night, and Tom is at the kitchen table with a yellow legal pad and a pen that does not work until he scribbles it.

He draws a line down the middle.

PROS, he writes on the left. CONS, on the right.

He starts with the easy column.

Passive

The number is real. He sleeps. He has never had to repaint a wall or evict anyone. The expense ratios are low. The math, over thirty years, did exactly what the simple path said it would. He has done nothing wrong.

He stares at the cons column.

Then he writes.

I had little control over what I owned.

He was at the mercy of the market. He also wondered if he’d enjoy running his own little business.

I could have been free ten years ago.

He writes a third. This one he has been turning over for a while.

Lack of leverage

Compounding on $50k in stocks is not the same as compounding on a $300k property. Benny got that benefit. He kept the appreciation on all of it.

He puts the pen down.

Benny is twenty-six when he wires the down payment. $15k, almost everything he has saved since college. 3.5% down on an FHA loan because he is going to live there. The wire confirmation comes back at 11:14 a.m. and he sits at his desk and looks at the number on the screen for a long time.

He drives by the duplex on his lunch break. He doesn’t go in. He drives past. It is brick, two stories, with a front porch that sags on one side and a maple in the yard that is bigger than the house.

The closing is two weeks later. The pen the title agent hands him is heavy metal, and his hand shakes the first time he signs. Twenty-one signatures. By the last one, his hand is steady. The agent slides a manila envelope across the table with two sets of keys. He picks them up. They are heavier than he thought keys could be.

He moves into the upstairs unit that weekend. The downstairs goes on the market on Monday and rents by Friday, to a guy named Marcus who works at the auto parts shop down the road. Marcus’s check covers the whole mortgage and some. Benny pays nothing. He used to pay $900 for a one-bedroom across town.

The first rent check arrives in the mailbox the first of the next month. He holds it on the front porch of his own building. He has been paid before. This is different. This is the building paying him.

After the first complaint, Benny hires a property manager. It takes him three tries before he finds a good one.

Benny is thirty-four when the world stops.

The S&P falls 30% in a month. Tom calls him on a Wednesday, exasperated.

The tenants in the duplex on Foster pay rent on the first. The renters in the house on Marshall pay on the third, four days late, with an apology. The young couple upstairs at Foster ask if they can split it into two payments and Benny says yes, take three weeks, no late fee.

Everyone pays. The rent does not care that the stock market is shaking. The rent cares whether someone is sleeping in the bedroom.

Then in June he gets an appraisal on the duplex. It has gone up $110k in eight years. He put $15k down at the start. The bank lets him pull $80k of equity out in a refinance, at 3%. He sits at his kitchen table with the loan documents and a calculator and does the math he has done a hundred times by now, only this time the math opens.

The $80k is going to buy him another building. The rent is going to pay the loan on the $80k and most of the loan on the new building. The first building is still appreciating on the full value, not on his $15k. And the new one will too.

He smiles and pulls up the MLS to start hunting for his next deal.

Benny is forty-five, sitting at his own kitchen table on a Sunday afternoon. He’s got a white pad of paper in hand.

He draws the line down the middle of the top sheet.

Rent

Rent covers everything and some. Plus it increases every year.

Leverage x Appreciation

Appreciation was the cherry on top of the whole operation. The leverage has used itself well. The first one was a house hack. He lived upstairs and Marcus paid the whole mortgage. Three years of that was the down payment on Marshall.

Taxes

The taxes on the cashflow are almost nothing because of depreciation, which is a word he had to look up the first time but which he now understands in his body. The buildings are worth, on paper, more than three times what he paid for them, but he does not pay tax on the on-paper part until he sells, and he is not going to sell.

He writes a last line, smaller, at the bottom:

I control what I own. I achieved my goals faster.

Then the cons.

Setbacks

Tenants call because the property manager didn’t respond. The water heater on Foster goes out twice a year. The vacancy in one of Marshall’s units went eight weeks last winter and he had to cover the mortgage.

Mistakes

Maybe not a con, because he learned a lot, but making mistakes was part of the game. Tom could set it and forget it.

He looks at the cons. Manageable, but not passive.

He folds the sheet in half and puts it in his back pocket.

Tom drives over on a Saturday in October. The leaves on Benny’s street are doing the thing they do for two weeks a year. Benny’s kids and Tom’s kids are in the basement, three of them, watching something with too much music.

The brothers sit at the kitchen table. There is a plate of cheese and crackers between them and two folded sheets of paper.

“You first,” Tom says.

Benny pushes his over. Tom unfolds it. He reads the cons column out loud, slow, the way they used to read the sports page to their dad.

“Tenants call because the property manager did not respond. Water heater on Foster goes out twice a year. The vacancy in the second duplex went eight weeks last winter and you had to cover the mortgage.” He looks up. “You hired a property manager.”

“I did.”

“And he still doesn’t pick up at midnight.”

“Some nights.”

Tom reads the pros. He reads the last line twice. Then he puts the sheet down, looks at his brother, and slides his own across the table.

Benny reads it the same way. Slow. He gets to the cons column.

“I had little control over what I owned,” he reads. “I just sent the money.”

He looks at the page.

“I could have been free ten years ago.” He stops. “Tom.”

“Keep going.”

“Yeah.”

Benny puts the sheet down. He picks up a cracker. He puts it back down without eating it.

“You sleep, though.”

“I sleep great.”

“I have not slept through a Tuesday night in fifteen years.”

“I know.”

Benny laughs. Tom laughs. The kids in the basement scream about something.

“You did fine,” Benny says.

“You did better.”

“I did different.”

The kitchen smells like onions from whatever Benny’s wife is cooking on the other side of the wall.

“You know what would have been bad,” Tom says.

“Yeah.”

“Neither.”

“Yeah.”

They sit with that.

“You hungry,” Benny says.

“Yeah.”

He gets up. The kids come up the stairs in a flood, hungry. Tom folds his sheet and puts it in his pocket. Benny’s is already in his.

The apartment is fine. The job is fine. The city has little cafes and a farmer’s market on Saturdays and I’ve been to it twice. Both times alone, both times home by ten and nothing to do the rest of the day.

I wash the dish and the fork and set them in the rack and stand there with the water still running, looking at the wall blankly.

I sit on the edge of the bed that night and fold my hands and close my eyes. The prayer is small. I almost don’t say it.

But I say it anyway. Barely full sentences. Just: God, I’m tired of this. I don’t know how to fix it. I don’t want to be alone.

I open my eyes. The room is the same. Nothing has stirred.

I go to bed.

The workshop is warm and full of light, but the light is different. Otherworldly.

Along the far wall, glass tubes run from the bench to ceiling. They hum faintly, ready to deliver outgoing messages.

There’s a golden tube set apart from the rest. It runs in the other direction than all the other tubes, delivering messages to those in the workshop.

Patty is sorting through the evening’s notes when her granddaughter’s prayer comes in. It arrives through one of the tubes with a soft thud, as a folded letter. She unfurls it and reads the handwriting she’s known for years.

God, I’m tired of this. I don’t know how to fix it. I don’t want to be alone.

“There’s my girl,” Patty says with a twinkle in her eye.

Across the bench, James looks up. He is older than Patty by several generations. He came to this work long before she did.

“From the apartment?” he asks.

“Yep.” Patty turns the notes to him. “She ate at the counter again. Not the table. She hasn’t used the table once since she moved.”

James reads the note and nods slowly. “She almost didn’t say this.”

“She almost never does.” Patty touches the edge of the paper. “She thinks it’s too small to ask about.”

The golden tube hums. A scroll drops into the opening at its base, warm to the touch. The answer that was on the way before the prayer was even started, the way always goes.

They both look at it.

“Never too small,” James says quietly.

Patty smiles. “Not even close.”

Patty unfolds the scroll. The handwriting is unhurried, specific, and full of love. She reads it once and sets it on the bench where James can see.

A person. Send her a person.

She nods. Her granddaughter builds walls so polite that nobody notices they’re walls. She’ll smile at the waiter. She’ll wave to the neighbor. She’ll go home and sit in the quiet and tell herself she’s fine.

“A person,” Patty repeats. “Someone who won’t let her brush her off too quick.”

The golden tube hums again. Another scroll.

Anne. The woman in 4C. She’s been meaning to knock for three weeks.

Anne, one floor up. Moved in a year before Patty’s granddaughter did. She noticed the girl carrying groceries alone every Saturday and thought about introducing herself and didn’t. Made too much soup last Tuesday and almost brought some down and talked herself out of it.

“She’s been circling,” James says. “For weeks.”

He grins. “She makes too much soup on purpose, you know. She’s been hoping for an excuse.”

Patty laughs. “Then let’s give her one.”

Patty takes a slip of parchment from the bench and begins writing. Just a thought that might cross a woman’s mind while she’s standing in her kitchen with too much soup. She writes it down in small careful letters: You should go check on her.

She rolls the note tight and sets it in one of the glass tubes. Inside the tube, it changes. The paper thins into light: a warmth, an impression.

Anne is wiping down her table after dinner. The pot of soup is still on the stove, too much again. She ladles the leftovers into a container and opens the fridge and stands there looking at the three other containers already stacked inside.

Something settles in her chest. Not a thought. Lighter than that. A pull, like remembering something she forgot to do. She stands there with the container in one hand and the fridge door open.

She thinks about the girl downstairs. She’s thought about knocking before. She’s talked herself out of it every time. She probably has her own people. She probably doesn’t want some stranger showing up with soup.

The feeling doesn’t fully leave. It sits there, patient.

Anne closes the fridge. She picks up the container. She walks to the door, and then past the door to the stairs.

The knock comes when I’m brushing my teeth. I almost don’t answer. Nobody knocks on my door.

I open it and a woman is standing there holding a container of soup. She’s in slippers and a cardigan and she looks almost as surprised to be here as I am to see her.

“I’m Anne,” she says. “I live upstairs. I made too much soup and I thought, well.” She holds out the container. “Do you like tomato basil?”

“That’s really sweet. I actually just ate, but thank you.”

She nods, but she doesn’t move. “You could save it for tomorrow. Or, I mean, you’re welcome to come up sometime. I always make too much.”

I’m about to say that sounds great in the way that means I’ll never do it, but she’s still standing there, and something in her face tells me she didn’t come down here just because of the soup.

“Do you want to come in?” I hear myself say. “I have these little pastries from the farmer’s market.”

Her face lights up. “You go to the Saturday market?”

“I’ve been twice.”

“I go every week. The stand with the almond croissants?”

“The one on the corner with the yellow sign.”

“That’s my favorite stand.” She’s already stepping inside. “I can’t believe we’ve never run into each other.”

She sits at my table, the one I never use, and I put the pastries on a plate and she heats the soup anyway and we eat across from each other and she tells me about her job at the library and her cat who only likes her sister. I tell her I moved here eight months ago for work. I tell her I haven’t really found my people yet. I say it like it’s nothing and she nods like she heard what I actually meant.

She stays an hour. When she leaves she says, “I make too much food all the time. Tuesdays are usually soup. Saturday I’ll be at the market by nine if you want to come.”

I sit on the edge of the bed that night. The apartment is quiet, but the table still has two place settings and the container on the counter says Anne, 4C — bring it back whenever in purple marker on a strip of tape.

I fold my hands. Close my eyes.

I get three words in and stop.

Anne in her slippers, holding soup, looking almost as nervous as I was. I made too much. She sat at my table like it was the most natural thing in the world. She heard what I actually meant when I said I hadn’t found my people.

She’d been meaning to knock for weeks. I almost didn’t open the door.

I sit there in the dark with my hands still folded and something quiet moves through my chest. Not a thought. A knowing.

I fold my hands again. The words come easier this time.

In some other unknown dimension, two angels smile.

I check it again on the way into the training hall. Still 3. The number sits on the inside of my wrist, pale blue against my skin, and I tilt my hand so the person walking beside me won’t see it. His reads 4. I caught it when he reached for the door.

I find a station near the back wall and pull on my gloves. They are white and fit snugly. The floor mixes levels, 1s through 5s running the same drills at different speeds. I raise my hands and the light appears between them: small shapes, pale and cool, hovering in the air where my fingers move. I guide them and turn simple shapes into more complex. I spread my fingers and the shapes follow, splitting, reforming, linking into chains that hold for a moment before dissolving. I am faster than I was a week ago. Across the room, a girl with a 5 moves through the advanced sequence without pausing, her light threading between her fingers like water. She makes it look simple.

A boy at the next station fumbles a basic pattern. His light stutters, breaks apart, resets. His wristband reads 2. I watch him try again. My shoulders loosen. Relief. At least I am not that bad.

I turn back to my own drill and push harder. My jaw tightens. The 5 across the room finishes her sequence and moves to the next tier. The gap between us does not close.

I go back to my drill. I need to be ready for the Merge.

I check my wrist again. Still 3.

The tall man appears mid-morning. No announcement. He walks onto floor three confident, but out of place. He stoops and kneels beside the 2, takes the boy’s gloved hands in his own, and reshapes how he holds them, adjusting the angle of his fingers.

I catch a glimpse of his wristband. It reads 10.

The number is so high it takes a second to register. Tens don’t come to this floor. Not only that, this one is crouching on the ground helping a 2 with a light pattern that a level 3 could do in their sleep.

I watch from my station. His hands are patient. He shows the boy the sequence once, slow, his own light steady and bright as he shapes it, then steps back and lets him try. When the boy’s light holds, the man nods and moves to someone else. A different station, a different stuck person. He works his way across the room like it is the most natural thing he could be doing with his morning.

He should not be down here.

The stranger kneels beside another 2, and my fists clench inside the gloves. My teeth press together. I turn back to my own floating light and push harder.

At the end of the session the man finds me. He does not introduce himself. He just stops beside my station where I am pulling off my gloves and says, “You’ve been watching me all morning.”

My face goes hot. “I was just wondering why you’re down here.”

“Good question.” He touches his wristband like he has forgotten it is there. He pauses. “Would you want to come to the upper levels? I can take a guest.”

I should say no. I have drills to run, patterns to memorize, a number to push. But my hands have already stopped moving. My eyes drift toward the lift before the rest of me agrees.

“How long?”

“A few hours.”

I nod. He turns and beckons me to follow.

The upper floors change fast. On five, fewer people work alone. Pairs lean toward each other, shaping light together, one person’s pattern feeding into another’s. A woman with a 6 laughs when her partner’s thread knocks hers sideways. They fix it together without speaking. By floor seven, the stations are gone. People stand in loose circles, weaving their light into structures I do not recognize, each person contributing a thread that locks into the others. Their light braids into something none of them could build alone. Wristbands range from 5 to 9. Nobody checks them.

“What are they doing?” I ask.

“Learning to hold their light up together,” the man says.

Floor nine. The room is split. On one side, groups weave light together. On the other, individuals work alone. The light is sharper here, the patterns denser. Their wristbands glow with 8’s and 9’s. The isolated ones check them often. Their jaws are set, their shoulders high. Their solo patterns are precise. They grind harder than anyone on floor three, faster, and alone. They can almost taste 10.

The lift opens onto floor ten. It barely looks like the Light Academy. People sit together in small groups, their light so interwoven I cannot tell where one person’s work ends and another’s begins.

Then he takes me to the window.

It is no ordinary window. It is an observation wall, floor to ceiling, and beyond it is not another floor. It is open. Vast. The space extends farther than I can track, and moving through it are people floating in the air, shaping light at a scale I cannot hold in my vision. Hundreds of them. Thousands. Their threads pass through each other and hold, weaving and reweaving, a single living structure that breathes and shifts like a flock turning as one. It is the same thing we do on floor three. The same shapes, the same light. But the reach of it makes the most advanced work on floor ten look like a child stacking blocks.

My hands find the glass. My legs feel thin.

“Those are post-Merge,” he says quietly. “Every one of them came through an academy like this one.”

I look for their wristbands. There are none.

“Where are their numbers?”

He is quiet for a moment. “The bands dissolve at The Merge. They don’t need them anymore.”

“Wait what? If they had their bracelets, what level would they be?”

He almost smiles. “In our terms? Maybe a million? A billion? It doesn’t really translate.”

My breath catches.

We stand at the glass for a long time.

“The ones who were closest to The Merge,” I say finally. “Were they the highest levels?”

He shakes his head. “They were the ones who stopped counting.”

Neither of us speaks. Beyond the glass, the light moves. I take a deep breath.

I look down at my wrist. The 3 glows the same pale blue it always has.

I think of the boy on my floor fumbling his light pattern. His 2 glowing on his wrist. And this man, this 10, who read that glow and came downstairs.

I let my breath out.

Floor three is the same. The same stations, the same hum of the light machines, the same people running the same patterns. The girl with the 5 works at the far wall. The boy with the 2 is back at his station, resetting after another failed sequence, his jaw set, his wrist turned inward so the number faces his body.

I know that gesture.

I walk to his station. Not quickly, not with a plan. I just go. I watch his hands. He is working a harder sequence now, his light brighter than this morning but shaking. The third shape comes too fast, breaks the chain. I reach over and steady his wrist.

He looks at my band. I see him read the 3.

“Why are you doing this?”

I smile. “We’re closer than we may realize.”

The first property closed three weeks ago. A home on the east side, old bones, good rent numbers. I’m already running the rehab budget against the second purchase. The margins work if I stay on schedule.

My youngest comes in, shuffling her sock feet across the kitchen tile, a book in both hands. She holds it up to me.

“Daddy, can we read together?”

I’ve got the contractor’s bid on my laptop, columns of numbers that don’t add up.

“Not now, sweetheart. Maybe later.”

She stands there a moment longer, then scurries back to the living room where her sister is building something out of couch cushions.

I don’t watch her go. I’m already scrolling to the next line item.

The contractor calls on a Tuesday. Foundation issues. One wall needs shoring up before they can touch the bathrooms. I pull the phone from my ear and stare at the number on the screen.

Twenty thousand over budget.

I sit in my truck in the driveway after the call ends. The rehab eats the reserves. The reserves were the down payment on property two. Property two was supposed to close in August. August was a quarter on the whiteboard, a rung on the ladder, and now the rung is gone and the whole thing sways.

I run the numbers three times on the back of an envelope. Every version ends the same: the timeline is wrecked. Not by a month. By a year, maybe more.

My hands tighten on the steering wheel. The girls are inside. The kitchen light glows through the window, my wife moving past it.

I stay in the truck.

When my oldest was born I told myself she’d have a father retired early who’d have all the time in the world to spend with her. I wrote the number on the whiteboard that week. Twenty units. Traced over it until the marker bled through.

The number hasn’t changed. But now it’s further away than it’s ever been, and I’m sitting in a driveway ten feet from my family, and I can’t make myself go inside.

I meet Ray for lunch. Thirty-two doors. Retired at fifty-one. Drives a clunker that’s 15 years old and doesn’t seem to notice.

I tell him everything. The foundation, the budget, the timeline in pieces.

Ray listens. He doesn’t try to fix it, even though that’s what I want.

“What did the foundation teach you?”

I blink. “That I should have gotten a better inspection.”

“What else?”

“That rehab budgets need a thirty percent cushion. That I need to walk the crawl space myself.” I stop. I’m listing things I didn’t know eight weeks ago.

Ray nods. “So you’re not behind. You just paid for some valuable lessons.”

We sit with that.

“Can I tell you something?” Ray says. “I hit my number. Thirty-two doors, cash flow covered, the whole thing. Took me fourteen years.” He grabs half his sandwich and points it at me. “My daughter played volleyball in high school. Four years. I made it to six games. I was always closing something, always chasing the next goal.” He looks out the window. “She’s twenty-eight now. She doesn’t play anymore. And I can’t go back and sit in those bleachers.”

He takes a bite of his sandwich.

“When you hit your number,” he says, “what are you going to do with that time you worked so hard for?”

I open my mouth. Nothing comes out.

On the way home I pass a park. A man pushing a girl on a swing. No phone in his hand.

Seven months later, the second property comes. A duplex, south side. Not the one I’d originally circled in August. That one went to someone else while I was digging out. This one is smaller. The numbers are tighter. I walk the crawl space myself before I make the offer.

The rehab stays on budget. Not because nothing goes wrong, but because I planned for things to go wrong. The thirty percent cushion holds.

On a Saturday I bring the girls to the property. I put hard hats on them from the truck and they walk through the empty rooms like explorers. My oldest runs her hand along the new drywall.

“Is this ours?”

“Sort of,” I say. “We’re fixing it up.”

“For who?”

“For someone who needs a place to live.”

“Well they’re lucky to have my Daddy to take care of them.”

That night we start a new book series. Both girls on the couch, one on each side. I do the voices wrong and they correct me, and the house is loud with the two of them arguing over which page we’re on.

The call comes on a Thursday. Roof damage, unit three. Water in the ceiling. The contractor’s voice has that tone, the one that means the number is about to change.

My youngest is in the doorway with the next book. She holds it up with both hands.

I look at the phone. I look at her.

The contractor is still talking. I can hear him listing what needs to be torn out, what needs to be replaced. The number is climbing.

“Hey, can I call you back in twenty minutes?”

I set the phone on the desk, screen down. Cross the kitchen. Pick her up and carry her to the couch.

“Okay. Show me where we left off.”

Later that week I stand in front of the whiteboard. The marker is in my hand. Twenty units. The same number I wrote when my oldest was a newborn and the future was a clean line from here to there.

I uncap the marker. I draw a line through twenty and write ten below it.

I then write two things off to the side: “Learn” and “Savor the moment.”

The timeline stays. The quarters stay. But the rungs are spaced wider now.

My oldest walks in and stands next to me, studying the board the way she studies everything.

“What’s that?”

“A plan,” I say.

“Did you change it?”

“Yeah.”

She leans into my side. I put my hand around her shoulder and pull her in. We stand there looking at the whiteboard together.

I am holding a cup.

I don’t remember picking it up. It is just here, in my hands.

The cup is plain. Clay. Cool against my palms. Empty.

No — not empty. There is something at the bottom. A dark trace, barely visible. I tilt it toward the light and it shifts, slow, like oil that hasn’t settled in water.

I watch it thicken. Darken. Begin to rise. Something stirs in my chest as it does. Familiar, but heavy.

It begins with sadness.

Not all at once. A thin dark line of it, rising in the cup. My throat closes. My eyes tear up. The cup grows heavier in my hands. I look down. The liquid continues to rise. Not much. A finger’s width. But it is warm now, a sickly warmth. And I can smell it. The sterile, sharp smell of a hospital.

More comes. The line becomes a pour. A face I love on a hospital pillow. A hand that was firm in mine, now turning light. A door closing. A child sitting on a curb with their backpack on, waiting for a car that will not come. The darkness of every night I lay curled and the weight closed in.

The cup is a third full. My wrists begin to ache.

The sickness comes next.

Fever. Sheets stuck to my skin. The morning I woke and my legs would not hold. I sat on the edge of the bed waiting for the room to stop tilting. The pill bottles lined up on the counter, each one a small surrender. A body that has been spending itself for so long it cannot remember what it spent itself for.

The liquid rises. It is darker now. Thicker.

The cup is two-thirds full. I hold it with both hands. My arms shake.

The sin comes last.

It does not pour. It seeps. Up from the bottom, through the sadness and the sickness, staining what was already dark into something blacker.

A tightening in my chest. My own hands doing things I told myself I would not do again. My own mouth shaping the lie before I even decided to speak it. The betrayed look on a face I love when they understood what I had done. The sinking feeling knowing that I would do it again.

The cup is full.

It is so heavy I have to press it against my stomach to keep from dropping it. The liquid inside is black and it does not reflect light. The heat comes through the clay, feverish, wrong, like holding something infected.

I try to set it down. My fingers will not open. I pull at them and they do not move. Locked to the rim as if the clay has grown into my skin.

The path ahead is dark.

I walk. My feet meet ground but I cannot see them. I cannot see the cup but I feel it pressed against my stomach, my arms locked around it.

The dark gets heavier.

It is not just around me now. It is on me. Weight on my shoulders, my neck, the top of my skull. My knees bend. Each step costs more than the last. I have no sense of whether I am moving toward anything or just moving.

I take another step. The weight doubles.

The dark thickens again. I did not think it could.

It is in my mouth now. Behind my teeth. I taste it: coppery and rotting. It lines the inside of my lungs. Each breath comes shorter than the one before. I am pulling air through a straw.

My foot catches something and I stumble. My knee hits the ground hard. Pain shoots up my thigh. My body curls over the cup before I can think, even though I know I cannot spill its contents. The dark rushes into the space I made. Presses into the curve of my back, the hollows behind my knees, the gaps between my fingers.

I get up. It takes a long time.

I walk again. Slower. The cup is against my sternum. My heartbeat drums into the clay and the liquid pulses back.

I think about drinking it. Just pouring it into myself to be done with it. I bring the rim to my lips. Nothing comes. The liquid sits thick and still against the edge. I can’t. My throat makes an empty gulp.

There is nowhere to empty it. No one to hand it to.

My knees give out. I fall. The cup stays level in my hands. Everything is quiet as I sink into the darkness.

Light. Faint, ahead of me. The darkness around me thins. Not all at once, but slowly, like fog burning off. I can see the ground again. Dirt and root and stone. My feet are bare. I don’t know when I lost my shoes.

Ahead, a clearing. Low branches frame it like a doorway. The light has no source I can find. It sits close to the ground, pale gold, the color of wheat an hour before sunset. It does not flicker.

I step through.

The garden is small. Olive trees, thick-trunked, their bark split and grey. The ground is uneven: packed earth and loose stone. A smell: crushed leaves and damp soil after rain.

I see a man kneeling.

Off to one side, near a low rock, the kind you might sit on to rest. His robe is plain. His back is to me but I can see His hands. He is wiping His forearm with the hem of His sleeve, slow and careful. The cloth comes away dark.

I stop walking. My pulse is loud in my ears.

He lowers His arm. Beside Him on the rock sits a cup. Wider and deeper than mine. It looks empty at first glance. But a thin residue clings to the walls, dark and wet, still sliding toward the bottom in slow trails. The rim is stained.

My chest tightens. I hold my cup against my stomach and feel its sick heat through the clay. The liquid shifts with my breathing.

He turns. His face is drawn, as if in constant pain.

But He smiles warmly.

“Hello my dear friend. I am glad that you are here.”

He reaches for my cup.

I do not offer it. He does not wait for me to. His fingers close over mine and I feel warmth — not the cup’s feverish heat. Something healing. He pulls the cup from my grip, gently but without hesitation, and my hands hang empty in the air, still curled in the shape of the rim in disbelief.

He looks down into it. His jaw sets. He does not look away.

He tilts my cup over His. The black liquid leaves in a slow, thick rope. It falls into His cup without a sound.

He pours until there is nothing left.

My cup is now empty. He sets it on the ground beside me.

His cup is full.

He brings it to His lips. His eyes find mine over the edge. I see a flash of fear.

He drinks.

He lowers the cup. Empty. A dark film clings to the walls. Thin, wet, sliding.

His breathing changes. Each breath drawn through the nose like He is pulling air past something lodged in His chest. His shoulders draw inward. His fingers spread and grip the fabric of His robe until the knuckles go white.

His head drops. His hair falls forward and hides His face. The pale light shifts on the olive bark behind Him.

I want to reach for Him. My feet will not move. Something holds me here, and I have no way to stop what is happening.

A sound escapes His lips — not a word, not a cry. Like a stone settling.

His head rises and His pained face pierces my soul.

Along His forehead, just above His left brow, the surface changes. A darkening. No larger than the head of a nail. The skin tightens and a single bead of red rises through the pore. It sits on the surface, perfect and round, catching what little light the garden holds.

One drop.

It does not fall immediately. It holds there, trembling with His breath, and I cannot look away because I know what it is. I know it the way I know my own name. The child on the curb. My body losing its strength. The lie I shaped before I decided to speak it. All of it, in that single bead, pressing through His skin because it has already pressed through mine.

My cup. His blood.

The drop slips. Down along the ridge of His brow, slow, cutting a line down his face.

A tear falls from His other eye. Just one. It runs down the opposite cheek. The track it leaves clean against the dust on His face.

Blood on one side. A tear on the other.

He is still. His hands rest on His knees, palms up, open.

He draws a long breath and returns His eyes to me.

He stands. He walks to me. He takes my hands.

His fingers close around mine and He holds them until they soften. My hands have been locked so long they ache as they open.

He pulls me in. His arms wrap around me and I feel His breathing. Ragged, unsteady. He is still carrying what He drank.

I do not know when I start crying. I only know that my face is pressed into His shoulder and the fabric is wet and my chest is heaving in a way I cannot stop. My fists grip the back of His robe. I hold on the way I held the cup, except this time my hands chose it and my burden is light.

He does not pull away. He does not shift His weight. He holds me the way the ground holds a foundation. As if He could do this forever and not need to be anywhere else.

His breathing steadies before mine does. Something in His grip shifts, loosens, and His hand rests on the back of my head. I feel His chest rise and fall and I match it without meaning to. Slow. Steady. The shaking stops.

He holds me until I am still.

He steps back.

He reaches into His robes and brings out a thin golden chain. A small pendant hangs from it. A figure eight on its side. No seam. No break.

He does not ask if I want it. He steps close and clasps it around my neck. The pendant rests in the hollow of my throat. It is warm. Not from His hands. Warm on its own, the way skin is warm.

“So you may live forever.”

My breathing steadies. The ache in my arms fades. Something I have been holding in my chest loosens and does not come back.

I trace the pendant with my fingertip. Around and around. My finger never catches an edge.

He brings out a second thing. Small. Wrapped in pale cloth, the corners tucked with care. He holds it out with both hands.

I take it. It is heavier than I expect. Solid.

A card is tucked into the fold, written in a hand that is careful and unhurried.

He closes my fingers around it.

“So you can return to me. Transformed, and ready to help.”

I hold it against my chest, beside the pendant.

He looks at me. Not past me. Not through me. At me. His eyes are steady and wet and He does not look away.

“I chose this. And I would choose it again.”

He holds my gaze until I believe Him.

He gently starts guiding me out the garden.

As I leave, I turn my head.

A woman is entering the garden. She holds a cup. Full. Her knuckles are white and her arms shake. She is looking past me, toward Him.

Behind her, a line stretches as far as I can see. Every person clutching their own cup.

The realization hits me.

Billions of cups. One garden.

The cloth He was wiping His forearm with when I arrived. The dark stain. Blood. From the one before me.

The film clinging to the inside of His cup before I poured mine in — not residue. The last person’s suffering, still being absorbed when I added mine.

Not once for all of them. Once for each.

As the scene fades from my view, I see the woman step forward. Her cup shakes. He smiles, and extends His hands.
