“God, what exactly am I supposed to be doing?”

Sometimes we want God to show us the whole picture before we take the first step.

But that’s not always how He works.

The Holy Spirit knows what you don’t know.

He sees what you cannot see.

And He can lead you one step at a time.

Paul said:

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
- Romans 8:14

Pay attention; he said led.

That means the Christian life is not supposed to be you figuring everything out alone and then asking God to bless your plans.

Which is what we mostly do.

The Holy Spirit wants to be involved in the journey.

Sometimes He gives you the next step.

Other times He closes a door.

Other times He puts a desire in your heart.

Other times He tells you to wait.

Other times He simply gives you peace about a decision.

And sometimes, honestly, you may not understand what He is doing until much later.

Look at Philip in Acts 8.

The Holy Spirit told him to go toward a particular place, and when he got there, he met the Ethiopian eunuch.

Philip didn’t have the whole story before he moved.

He simply obeyed the next instruction.

Please listen!

Maybe that’s what you need today.

Not the full map.

Just the next step.

You don’t have to know how everything will work out, trust Him.

You just need to learn to walk with the One who already knows the way.

TRUTH:
The Holy Spirit doesn’t always show you the whole journey; sometimes He gives you enough light for the next step.

Holy Spirit, I don’t want to live my life according to my own understanding.

Teach me to recognize Your leading.

But let me ask you something.

Do you think the Holy Spirit is only interested in the big decisions?

Who you marry.

Where you work.

What church you attend.

Where you live.

Your “purpose.”

All the big stuff.

What about the little things?

What time you leave the house?

Who you call.

What you say.

When you should keep quiet.

Whether you should respond to that message.

Interesting right.

Me I used to think God was only interested in the big things.

Like, “Lord, what is my purpose?”

“Lord, what is my next big move?”

Meanwhile, God is like, this boy calm down.

“Can you just listen to Me about the small thing first?”

Paul says:

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

- Romans 8:14

It doesn’t say we are led by the Spirit only when the decision is important.

We are led by the Spirit.

Period.

And personally I think this is one of the beautiful things about walking with Him.

You begin to involve Him in your everyday life.

You don’t have to wait until you’re facing a life-changing decision before you talk to Him.

You can say,

“Holy Spirit, should I go?”

“Should I call this person?”

“Should I say this?”

“Should I wait?”

“Is this the right thing to do?”

I call it gisting with God

And sometimes, you may not get some dramatic answer.

Sometimes you just have a check in your spirit.

Sometimes you remember a Scripture.

Sometimes you realize that your motive isn’t right.

Sometimes you simply have peace about something.

And sometimes…

nothing.

And that’s okay too.

We don’t really have to force God to speak every five minutes.

We learn.

We listen.

We move when He leads.

One thing I have noticed is that the more you involve the Holy Spirit in the little things, the more conscious you become of Him.

And that’s really what this whole series is about.

Conscious awareness.

Not only knowing that the Holy Spirit lives in you, but actually living like He does.

Imagine having Someone who knows what you don’t know, sees what you can’t see, and understands what you don’t understand…

and then choosing to make every decision without asking Him.

That’s actually crazy when you think about it.

So today, don’t wait for a major decision.

Try something simple.

Before you make a small decision, pause.

And ask,

“Holy Spirit, what do You think?”

Then be quiet for a moment.

You may be surprised by what happens.

Truth

The Holy Spirit is not only interested in the big decisions that change your life; He wants to be involved in the little decisions that make up your life.

Holy Spirit, I want You involved in my everyday life. Teach me not to separate my spiritual life from my normal life. Help me to remember You in the little things, listen when You lead, and trust You even when the decision seems small. Amen.

We’ve established that not every voice, thought, feeling is the Holy Spirit.

Not every “I feel like God is telling me this…”

So how do we know?

How do we actually become better at recognizing Him?

Know the Word.

This one is very important.

Because the Holy Spirit will never lead you against the Word of God.

Think about it.

The Holy Spirit is the One who inspired the Scriptures in the first place.

Peter says,

“Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

— 2 Peter 1:21

So why would the same Spirit who inspired the Word now tell you to do something that goes against it?

He won’t.

And I think sometimes we make this thing harder than it actually is.

We are praying,

“Holy Spirit, what are You saying?”

“Holy Spirit, should I do this?”

“Holy Spirit, is this You?”

Meanwhile, God has already said some things very clearly in His Word.

You don’t need a fresh revelation to know that you should forgive or love people.

You don’t need to “feel led” to know that you should walk away from sin.

God has already spoken.

And the Holy Spirit will remind you of what God has already said.

Jesus said,

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... he shall bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

- John 14:26

This is one reason why reading the Bible is so important.

Because you can not remember what you never knew.

Sometimes you’re in a situation and suddenly a Scripture you read two weeks ago just comes to your mind.

You were not even thinking about it.

And somehow, that exact Scripture is what you need at that moment.

Have you experienced that before?

I have experienced it so many times.

And I’m like,

“Holy Spirittttt.”😂

Because sometimes He doesn’t need to tell you something new.

He just reminds you of something God has already said.

Maybe you’re angry and He reminds you,

“Be angry, and sin not.”

Or you’re worried and He reminds you,

“Be anxious for nothing.”

Or you’re confused and He reminds you,

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”

Maybe you’re struggling to forgive and He reminds you what Jesus said about forgiveness.

The Word was already there.

But the Holy Spirit brought it alive in that moment.

That’s why I don’t want us to become people who are always chasing a voice but don’t know the Word.

Know your Bible.

please read it.

Sit with it.

Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you.

Because the more you know what God has said, the easier it becomes to know what He isn’t saying.

And please, this is important:

Don’t use “the Holy Spirit told me” to justify what the Bible clearly says God doesn’t want.

No, We don’t do that.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.

He will always glorify Jesus.

He will never need to contradict God’s Word to lead you.

So when you think you’re hearing Him, test it.

And when you’re not sure...

go back to the Word.

Truth

The Holy Spirit will never lead you against the Word He inspired. Sometimes His voice is simply a reminder of something God has already said.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, teach me Your Word. Give me a hunger for Scripture and help me understand what I read. Bring God’s Word back to my remembrance when I need it, and help me recognize Your voice through what You have already said. Amen.

We’ve talked about becoming sensitive to His promptings.

Today is another important one

How do you know it’s actually Him?

Because let’s be honest.

Not every thought in your head is the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes it’s your emotions.

Sometimes it’s fear.

Sometimes it’s your own desires.

Sometimes it’s something you heard five minutes ago.

And sometimes... it really is the Holy Spirit.

So how do we tell the difference?

The Bible gives us something very important:

Discernment.

Paul said:

“But he that is spiritual judgeth all things...”

- 1 Corinthians 2:15

And John tells us:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God...”

- 1 John 4:1

In other words,

Don’t believe everything just because it feels spiritual.

Test it.

This is important because being led by the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean switching off your brain. hmmm

The Holy Spirit doesn’t ask you to abandon wisdom.

He teaches you to use it.

And one of the strongest ways to test what you’re hearing is the Word of God.

The Holy Spirit will never tell you to do something that contradicts the Scriptures.

If the voice says, things like “Lie.” “Take revenge.” “Hold on to unforgiveness.”

Please...That’s not the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth.

Jesus said:

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth...”

- John 16:13

Truth matters.

And here’s something i have learned,

Sometimes we’re not actually confused about what the Holy Spirit is saying.

We’re confused because we already know what we want to do.

We want God to agree with our decision.

So we ask,“Holy Spirit, should I do this?”

But what we’re really saying is,

“Holy Spirit, Please approve what I’ve already decided.”

The truth is, we have all done it.

That’s why discernment requires humility.

You have to be willing to hear “No” when you want “Yes.”

To wait when you want to move.

To change your mind when God corrects you.

And the more you know God’s Word, the easier it becomes to recognize what sounds like Him and what doesn’t.

Think about it this way:

You don’t become familiar with a voice by studying every possible fake voice. No.

You become familiar with the real voice.

The more time you spend with the Holy Spirit and the Word, the more you recognize His ways.

So don’t become obsessed with chasing voices.

Become obsessed with knowing God.

And when you think the Holy Spirit is leading you, test it.

Does it agree with Scripture?

Does it produce the character of Christ?

Does it draw you toward God or away from Him?

Can you submit it to wise, godly counsel when necessary?

Because spiritual maturity isn’t just knowing how to hear.

It’s knowing what to do with what you hear.

Truth

Being led by the Holy Spirit doesn’t mean believing every thought that comes to your mind. Spiritual maturity is learning to recognize His voice and test what you hear against God’s Word.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, give me discernment. Help me recognize Your voice and distinguish it from my emotions, fears, desires, and every other voice competing for my attention. Give me the humility to test what I hear against Your Word and the courage to obey what is truly from You. Amen.

You are the real MVPs.

So, yesterday, we talked about spiritual gifts.

Today, I want to stay there for a little while because there is something that has been on my mind, this thing can quietly kill the joy of what God has given you.

Comparison.

We all are guilty of this at one point or the other.

And comparison is sneaky.

You can be grateful for what God is doing in your life and still look at someone else and think,

“Omor I wish I had what they have.”

You see someone preach and wish you could preach.

Someone sings and the whole room responds, and you think,

“I wish I could do that.”

Someone seems to hear God so clearly.

Someone is building something beautiful.

Someone’s ministry is growing.

And suddenly, what God gave you doesn’t feel special again.

But Paul asks a very important question:

“If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing?”

- 1 Corinthians 12:17

Imagine a body where everybody wants to be an eye.

No hands.

No feet.

No ears.

Just eyes everywhere.

That body wouldn’t be more powerful.

It would be useless.

Difference is not a mistake.

God intentionally made us different.

Paul says:

“But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.”

- 1 Corinthians 12:18

As it pleased Him.

Not as it pleased you.

Not as it pleased Instagram.

Not according to what gets the most attention.

As it pleased Him.

And I think this is where we need to learn something about the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t distribute gifts so that we can compete.

He distributes gifts so that we can complete one another.

Your gift needs someone else’s gift.

Their gift needs yours.

That’s why comparison is so dangerous.

Because while you are busy wishing you had someone else’s assignment, you may be neglecting the one God actually gave you.

Imagine spending your whole life trying to become somebody else…

and never becoming the person God created you to be.

Paul says:

“Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them.”

- Romans 12:6

I love how simple that is.

Let us use them.

Not compare them.

Not hide them.

Not compete with them.

Use them.

Maybe your gift isn’t loud.

Maybe it doesn’t put you on a stage.

Maybe nobody even knows you’re gifted.

That’s okay.

The Holy Spirit isn’t measuring your gift by how many people see it.

He is looking at your faithfulness with what He gave you.

So stop asking,

“Why don’t I have what they have?”

And start asking, “What am I doing with what I have?”

Because what God put in you is not an accident believe me.

Truth

Comparison makes you overlook what God gave you because you’re too busy admiring what He gave someone else.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to appreciate what You have placed in me. Deliver me from comparison and the desire to be someone else. Give me the grace to discover, develop, and faithfully use the gifts You have given me for Your glory and for the good of others. Amen.

But there is another side to His work.

He also gives gifts through us.

And this is where things get interesting.

Because when we hear the word gift, we usually think about something given to us for our own benefit.

But spiritual gifts are different.

Paul says:

“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:7

I hope you catch that?

For the profit of all.

The Holy Spirit gives you something that is meant to bless someone else.

That means there are things God has placed inside you that were never meant to stop with you.

Paul continues:

“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:4

Different gifts.

Same Spirit.

Someone can teach.

Someone can encourage.

Someone can give.

Someone can lead.

Someone can show mercy.

Someone can operate in a gift of healing.

Someone can speak a word of wisdom.

Someone can discern.

Someone can serve in ways that nobody notices.

And none of these makes one believer more valuable than another.

The same Spirit gives them all.

This is important because we can easily start comparing gifts.

“I wish I could do what he does.”

“I wish God used me like that.”

“Maybe my gift isn’t important because it’s not as visible.”

But that’s not how the Holy Spirit sees it.

Paul compares the Church to a body.

The eye cannot say to the hand,

“I don’t need you.”

And the hand cannot say,

“Because I’m not the eye, I don’t belong.”

Every part matters.

Think about how crazy it would be if your little finger suddenly decided it wasn’t important because it wasn’t your face.

It has a function.

Maybe nobody pays attention to it.

But remove it, and you’ll notice.

That’s how the body of Christ works.

The Holy Spirit has intentionally distributed gifts among His people.

And here’s the part that really gets me:

You don’t get to choose the gift just because you like it.

Paul says:

“But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
- 1 Corinthians 12:11

As He wills.

So instead of spending your life wishing you had someone else’s gift, perhaps you should ask:

“Holy Spirit, what have You placed in me, and how do You want me to use it?”

Because your gift is not primarily for your platform.

It is for people.

Someone’s encouragement might come through you.

Someone’s healing might be connected to your obedience.

Someone might understand Scripture because you took the time to teach them.

Someone might keep going because you decided to encourage them.

Someone might encounter the love of Christ because you used what God gave you.

That’s the beauty of spiritual gifts.

God puts something in you that He intends to use to bless others.

Truth

The gift the Holy Spirit gives you is not primarily for you. He put something in you that someone else may need.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You for the gifts You give. Help me to recognize what You have placed in me and use it well. Keep me from comparing myself with others. Teach me to use what You have given me to serve people and reveal Jesus. Amen.

There is something in you that someone else may need.

Find it.

Use it.

And I will see you tomorrow.

We have talked about His correction.

But here’s something I’ve been thinking about:

What should happen to a person who consistently walks with the Holy Spirit?

Something should change.

Not just around you.

In you.

Because the Holy Spirit is not only interested in what you can do for God.

He is interested in who you are becoming.

Paul says:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”

— Galatians 5:22–23

I used to read this and think,

“Okay, I need to work on being more loving.”

“I need more patience.”

“I need to be more self-controlled.”

And yes, we have a part to play, true.

But take a look at the wording.

The fruit of the Spirit.

Fruit is something that grows.

You don’t wake up one morning and decide,

“Today, I’m going to produce nine fruits.” 😂

No.

You stay connected to the source, and fruit begins to appear.

Jesus said:

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself… neither can you, unless you abide in Me.”

— John 15:4

This is where it gets beautiful.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just tell you,

“Be more patient.”

He works in you until patience begins to become part of who you are.

He doesn’t just tell you,

“Love people.”

He changes your heart until you can love people who are difficult to love.

He doesn’t just tell you,

“Have self-control.”

He gives you the grace to say no when everything in you wants to say yes.

That’s transformation.

And sometimes we don’t notice it because we’re looking for something dramatic.

But then you look back and realize,

“Wait… I don’t react the way I used to.”

“That thing that used to control me doesn’t control me anymore.”

“I forgive faster now.”

“I don’t get angry like I used to.”

“I actually have peace about this.”

You may not have noticed the growth because fruit grows quietly.

But it’s there.

And this is one of the reasons I don’t want this series to only be about what the Holy Spirit can do through you.

I want us to also pay attention to what He is doing in you.

Because you can have gifts and still have terrible character.

You can be impressive publicly and completely different privately.

But the Holy Spirit is after something deeper.

Christ in you.

Paul said:

“My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you.”

— Galatians 4:19

That’s the goal.

Not just that you speak well.

Not just that you pray powerfully.

Not just that you know Scripture.

That Christ is formed in you.

So maybe ask yourself today:

What is the Holy Spirit producing in me?

Not just what am I doing for God?

But,

Who am I becoming because I walk with Him?

Truth

The evidence of the Holy Spirit in your life is not only what happens through you; it is also what He is producing in you.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, work in me. Produce Your fruit in my life. Make me more loving, more patient, more gentle, more faithful, and more self-controlled. I don’t just want to be used by You; I want to be transformed by You. Let Christ be formed in me. Amen.

We’ve talked about the power of the Holy Spirit.

But here’s something we don’t talk about enough.

The Holy Spirit will tell you when you’re wrong.

And honestly, this is one of the ways I’ve come to appreciate Him even more.

Because sometimes, we want a Holy Spirit who comforts us, guides us, strengthens us…

but not one who corrects us.

We like the “You’re doing great!” Holy Spirit.

But what about the one who says,

“That’s not right.”

Jesus said:

“And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

— John 16:8

Notice the word:

Convict.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t expose your wrongs to shame you.

He exposes them so that you can deal with them.

There’s a difference between conviction and condemnation.

Condemnation says,

“Look at what you did. You’re terrible. You will never change.”

Conviction says,

“This is wrong. Come back.”

One pushes you away from God.

The other draws you back to Him.

That’s love.

Imagine having someone in your life who loves you enough to tell you the truth, even when the truth is uncomfortable.

That’s the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes He will make you uncomfortable about something you were previously comfortable with.

You send that message…

and something inside you says,

“You shouldn’t have sent that.”

You say something hurtful…

and suddenly you can’t shake the realization that you need to apologize.

You begin entertaining something you know isn’t pleasing to God…

and there’s that inward check.

You can ignore it.

You can explain it away.

You can tell yourself,

“It’s not that serious.”

But deep down, you know.

He’s dealing with you.

And here’s the beautiful part.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just show you what’s wrong.

He helps you change.

Paul says:

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

— Romans 8:13

Did you see that?

By the Spirit.

Even in overcoming sin, God doesn’t say, “Figure it out yourself.”

He gives you His Spirit.

This is why we should never run from conviction.

When the Holy Spirit corrects you, don’t hide.

Don’t defend yourself.

Don’t negotiate with Him.

Respond.

Repent.

Ask for help.

And keep walking.

Because the Holy Spirit isn’t trying to make you feel bad.

He’s making you more like Jesus.

And sometimes, the most loving thing God can do for you is make you uncomfortable with something that is destroying you.

Truth

Conviction is not the Holy Spirit telling you that you’re a bad person. It is the Holy Spirit loving you enough to show you what needs to change.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You for loving me enough to correct me. Give me the humility to receive Your conviction and the strength to respond when You show me something that needs to change. Don’t let me become comfortable with what You are asking me to surrender. Make me more like Jesus. Amen.

When He corrects you, don’t run.

Come closer.

But there’s another side of His ministry we need to understand.

He empowers us.

And this is important because the Christian life is not just about knowing what is right.

Sometimes you know exactly what you should do…

and you still don’t have the strength to do it.

You know you should forgive.

You know you should take responsibility.

You know you should walk away.

You know you should say no.

You know you should pray.

You know you should obey.

But knowing isn’t always the problem.

Strength is.

And this is where the Holy Spirit comes in.

I struggled with this for a long time so please listen.

Jesus told His disciples:

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”

— Acts 1:8

Notice the order.

The Holy Spirit comes. Then power comes.

Jesus didn’t tell them,

“Try harder.”

He didn’t say,

“Be more disciplined.”

He said,

“You shall receive power.”

My God!

This means God never intended for you to live the Christian life by willpower alone.

There are things your human strength cannot accomplish.

There are temptations you cannot overcome by simply promising yourself,

“I won’t do it again.”

There are assignments you cannot fulfil because you are naturally gifted.

There are moments when courage will not come naturally.

Honestly, you need power beyond yourself.

Paul said:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

— 2 Timothy 1:7

Power.

Love.

A sound mind.

Look at that again.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just give you power to do extraordinary things.

He gives you power to live differently.

Power to love when it’s easier to hate.

Power to forgive when your flesh wants revenge.

Power to stand when everyone else is falling.

Power to say no when everyone else is saying yes.

Power to keep going when you’re tired.

And perhaps one of the greatest demonstrations of the Holy Spirit’s power is not what happens through you.

It’s what happens in you.

A person who used to react in anger now pauses.

Someone who couldn’t forgive begins to let go.

Someone who was controlled by fear begins to walk in courage.

Someone who couldn’t say no finally learns to say no.

Someone who kept falling into the same thing begins to overcome.

Brothers and sisters, that’s power!

And sometimes we are looking for the spectacular while God is doing something supernatural in our character.

My God!

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just give you power for the platform.

He gives you power for your everyday life.

For your Monday.

For your workplace.

For your relationships.

For your private life.

For the moments nobody sees.

Because Christianity was never designed to be lived by human strength.

Truth

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just give you power to do great things; He gives you power to become the kind of person you could never become by your own strength.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I need Your power. Help me not to depend on my own strength. Give me power to overcome sin, to obey God, to love well, to stand firm, and to become more like Jesus. Let Your strength be seen in my weakness. Amen.

We’ve talked about how the Holy Spirit reveals Jesus and works in us.

But today, I want to talk about something very practical.

Prayer.

Because if we’re being honest, there are times when you don’t know what to pray.

Not because you don’t love God.

Not because you don’t have faith.

Uhh, let’s say sometimes life just happens.

Something hurts, and you don’t have the words.

Something is confusing, and you don’t even know what you want God to do.

Sometimes you just sit there.

And all you can say is,

“God…”

And then silence.

I’ve had moments like that.

And one of the things I find beautiful about the Holy Spirit is that He helps us even there.

Paul says:

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us…”
— Romans 8:26

Read that again.

“We know not what we should pray for as we ought.”

Paul didn’t used the word they don’t know.

He said we.

There will be moments when you don’t know what to pray.

And God’s answer to that weakness is not condemnation.

He gives you help.

Think about how beautiful this is.

When you don’t know what to say to God, the Holy Spirit isn’t standing there waiting for you to figure it out.

He helps you.

This changed something for me.

I used to think I needed to have the right words before I could pray properly.

But prayer isn’t a performance.

Sometimes you don’t need a perfect prayer.

You just need to come.

And when you come, the Holy Spirit helps you.

He takes that weakness and helps you communicate with God.

And sometimes, the Holy Spirit will even bring something to your heart that you didn’t plan to pray about.

A person.

A situation.

A Scripture.

A burden.

A desire to intercede.

And suddenly you find yourself praying about something you weren’t even thinking about five minutes ago.

This is why fellowship with the Holy Spirit changes your prayer life.

You’re not just talking at God.

You’re learning to pray with the help of the Spirit.

Jesus also said:

“For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.”
— Matthew 10:20

The Holy Spirit is involved in our communication with God in ways many of us haven’t even begun to understand.

Let me give you a hack

The next time you sit down to pray and you don’t know where to start, don’t walk away.

Don’t feel like you have failed.

Just start.

Say,

“Holy Spirit, help me pray.”

And let Him help you.

Because sometimes the most spiritual prayer you can pray is simply an honest admission:

“I don’t know what to say.”

And God already knows.

Truth

You don’t have to know exactly what to pray before you come to God. The Holy Spirit helps you in the very place where you don’t know what to do.

Holy Spirit, thank You for helping me pray. When I don’t know what to say, teach me. When I don’t know what to ask for, help me. Make my prayer life a place of fellowship with You, not a performance. Amen.

We’ve established that the Holy Spirit is a Person.

We’ve talked about His ministry, His voice, His leading, and even how He reminds us of who we are.

So let’s proceed.

There is another very important truth about the Holy Spirit that we need to look at.

He is always pointing us to Jesus.

Jesus said something very interesting about Him:

“He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.”
— John 16:14

Did you see that?

He will glorify Me.

The Holy Spirit’s ministry is not to make Himself the center of attention.

He makes Jesus the center.

Stay with me.

This is one of the simplest ways to recognize the work of the Holy Spirit.

If something is truly from the Holy Spirit, it will ultimately point you to Christ.

Think about that.

The Holy Spirit can teach you something from Scripture, and somehow you see Jesus more clearly or your work with Him.

He can convict you about something in your life, and it makes you want to become more like Jesus.

He can lead you into something, and the result is that Christ is being revealed through your life.

He doesn’t just give you an experience.

He reveals a Person.

Jesus.

Interesting!

This means the Holy Spirit isn’t trying to make you obsessed with spiritual experiences.

He’s trying to make you more like Christ.

Paul said:

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image…”
— 2 Corinthians 3:18

And guess who Paul was talking about in the verses before this?

The Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is involved in transforming us into the image of Jesus.

So if you’ve ever wondered/prayed,

“How do I become more like Jesus?”

One of the answers is:

Walk with the Holy Spirit.

Because He knows Jesus.

He reveals Jesus.

He forms the

of Jesus in us.

He teaches us to love like Jesus.

Forgive like Jesus.

Serve like Jesus.

Obey like Jesus.

And slowly, sometimes so slowly that you don’t even notice it, you begin to look different.

You respond differently.

You think differently.

You love differently.

You start becoming the person you’ve been praying to become.

That’s the work of the Spirit.

And here’s something you need to hear:

The Holy Spirit is not just trying to get Jesus into your mouth. He’s trying to get the life of Jesus into your character.

That’s why this relationship matters.

Truth!

The clearest evidence of the Holy Spirit at work in your life isn’t how much you can say about Him, but how much the life of Jesus is being formed in you.

Holy Spirit, reveal Jesus to me. Teach me to see Him more clearly and become more like Him. Let Your work in me go beyond experiences and words. Form the character of Christ in me until my life begins to look like Him. Amen.

We’ve spent the last few days talking about hearing the Holy Spirit, becoming sensitive to Him, and responding when He leads.

But there’s something else I think we should look at.

He reminds you who you are.

Because if you don’t know who you are, you’ll spend your life trying to become what everyone else wants you to be.

And honestly, the world is very good at telling us who we should be.

Your achievements.

Your failures.

Your family.

Your past.

Your appearance.

Your money.

Your relationships.

Your mistakes.

People can put labels on you.

And sometimes, after hearing those labels for long enough, you start believing them.

But the Holy Spirit has something to say about you.

Paul says:

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”

- Romans 8:16

I love that.

The Holy Spirit bears witness with your spirit.

He reminds you that,

“You belong to God.”

Not because you performed well today.

Not because you prayed for three hours.

Not because you got everything right.

You are His because you are His.

Period!

And sometimes, you need that reminder.

Because there will be days when you don’t feel like a child of God.

There will be days when you mess up.

Days when you pray and feel nothing.

Days when you question yourself.

Days when you look at your life and wonder if you’re actually making progress.

And in those moments, the Holy Spirit doesn’t come to condemn you.

He reminds you of your identity.

That’s why Romans 8:15 says:

”…ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

Abba.

Father.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just make you aware that God exists.

He makes you aware that God is your Father.

Umm

That’s different.

You can know about God and still live like an orphan.

Always trying to earn His approval.

Always afraid you’ve done something wrong.

Always wondering if He still loves you.

But the Spirit of adoption reminds you:

You are His.

And when you know that, it changes how you live.

You don’t obey God because you’re trying to convince Him to love you.

You obey because you already know you are loved.

You don’t pray because you’re trying to get God’s attention.

You pray because you know you have access to your Father.

You don’t serve to become a son.

You serve because you already are one.

This is one of the beautiful things the Holy Spirit does.

He doesn’t just lead you into what God wants you to do.

He keeps reminding you of who you are to God.

Truth

The Holy Spirit doesn’t only lead your steps; He keeps reminding your heart that you are a child of God.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You for reminding me that I belong to God. When I forget who I am, remind me. When I feel unworthy, remind me of what Christ has done. Help me to live from the confidence that I am God’s child, not from the fear that I have to earn His love. Amen.

But there’s a point where sensitivity has to grow something else.

Obedience.

Because what’s the point of hearing Him if we’re not willing to follow Him?

I know this could be the difficult part but think about it.

You can know exactly what God is asking you to do and still choose not to do it.

You can feel that nudge to call someone and decide, “I’ll do it later.”

You can know you need to apologise and start looking for reasons why you shouldn’t.

You can sense that you shouldn’t take that opportunity, but because everything looks perfect on paper, you go ahead anyway.

Sometimes the Holy Spirit doesn’t give us a long explanation.

He simply says,

“Don’t.”

Or,

“Go.”

Or,

“Wait.”

And honestly, that’s where trust comes in.

Because obedience doesn’t always make sense before you obey.

Look at Philip.

An angel of the Lord told him to go toward the road that led from Jerusalem to Gaza.

Then the Holy Spirit said,

“Go near, and overtake this chariot.”

— Acts 8:29

Imagine being Philip.

You’re just going about your day, and suddenly the Holy Spirit tells you to go towards a random chariot.

He didn’t give Philip the entire story.

He didn’t say, “Philip, there’s an Ethiopian eunuch inside that chariot, he’s reading Isaiah, you’re going to explain the Gospel to him, and he’s going to believe.”

No.

Go near the chariot.

That’s it.

Philip obeyed.

And that obedience became the doorway to someone’s encounter with Jesus.

My God!

What if some of the things the Holy Spirit is asking you to do today are connected to things you haven’t seen yet?

What if the call you’re delaying…

The apology you’re avoiding…

The person you’re supposed to encourage…

The place you’re supposed to go…

The thing you’re supposed to stop…

is connected to something God is doing that you cannot see yet?

This is why obedience matters.

And delay obedience is still disobedience

We don’t obey because we understand everything.

We obey because we trust the One leading us.

And sometimes, obedience will cost you something.

Your pride.

Your comfort.

Your plans.

Your time.

But there is something beautiful about a believer who can say,

“Holy Spirit, if You say go, I will go.”

Not because you have all the details.

But because you trust Him.

Truth

The Holy Spirit doesn’t always show you the whole picture before asking you to take the next step. Sometimes obedience is simply trusting Him enough to move.

Holy Spirit, give me a heart that obeys You. Help me not to demand an explanation before I follow. When You say go, give me courage to go. When You say wait, give me patience to wait. When You say stop, give me the strength to stop. Teach me to trust You even when I cannot see the whole picture. Amen.

Now here’s the part that can be uncomfortable:

What do you do when He speaks and you don’t want to listen?

Because mosttimes the problem isn’t that we can’t hear Him.

Sometimes we hear Him just fine.

We just don’t like what He’s saying.

I know you can relate…

You know that moment when you suddenly feel that you shouldn’t send that message?

Or you want to say something, but something inside you says, “Don’t.”

Or you know you should apologize, but your pride starts giving you 17 reasons why you shouldn’t.

Or you’re about to make a decision and there’s this quiet restraint inside you.

Sometimes we call it a feeling.

Sometimes we call it overthinking.

Sometimes we just ignore it.

But what if some of those moments are opportunities to respond to the Holy Spirit?

Paul says:

“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”

— Ephesians 4:30

You can’t grieve something that has no feelings.

The Holy Spirit can be grieved. Yes! He can.

And one of the ways we grieve Him is by continually resisting what He is showing us.

Stephen said something very strong to the religious leaders:

“Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost…”

- Acts 7:51

That word resist got me.

Because sensitivity to the Holy Spirit isn’t just about hearing.

It’s about responding.

Trust me,

You can hear the right thing and still choose the wrong thing.

You know what I mean.

You can know what God is asking and still postpone obedience.

And the more we ignore those promptings, the easier it becomes to ignore them again.

But the opposite is also true.

The more you respond to the Holy Spirit, the more sensitive you become to His leading.

It’s like a muscle.

You exercise it, it becomes stronger.

One of the simplest prayers I’ve started learning to pray is:

“Holy Spirit, make me sensitive to You.”

Not just sensitive to spectacular things.

Sensitive to the little things.

When He tells you to apologise.

When He tells you to stop.

When He tells you to call someone.

When He reminds you to pray.

When He asks you to give.

When He tells you to wait.

When He asks you to forgive.

Because sometimes the greatest evidence that you’re growing in your relationship with the Holy Spirit isn’t that you’re experiencing more extraordinary things.

It’s that you’re becoming quicker to obey Him in ordinary things.

Truth

Sensitivity to the Holy Spirit is not just hearing Him; it is becoming willing to respond when He speaks.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, make me sensitive to You. Help me recognize Your promptings and give me the humility to respond, even when what You ask is uncomfortable. I don’t want to become so familiar with Your voice that I stop responding to You. Teach me to obey You quickly. Amen.

But here’s something that makes fellowship even more beautiful;

The Holy Spirit communicates.

He speaks.

And I think this is where things start getting really interesting.

Because if the Holy Spirit speaks, then the question isn’t only,

“Does God still speak?”

The question becomes,

“Am I listening?”

Hmmm

Jesus said:

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak…”

— John 16:13

He will speak.

Not He might.

Not He used to.

He will speak.

We see this throughout Scripture.

In Acts 13:2, the Holy Spirit said,

“Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

The Holy Spirit gave direction.

He communicated.

He made His will known.

And this isn’t just something that happened to apostles in Bible times.

Paul says,

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”

— Romans 8:14

If we are led by the Spirit, then we have to learn how He leads.

Now, let me be more careful here.

When I say the Holy Spirit speaks, I’m not saying every thought that enters your head is the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes it’s your emotions.

Sometimes it’s your fears.

Sometimes it’s what you really want to happen.

And sometimes…

it’s Him.

This is why we need the Word(scripture).

The Holy Spirit will never lead you in a way that contradicts the Scriptures He inspired.

So how do we become better at recognizing His voice?

We spend time with Him (I love this one)

We know His Word.

We obey the things He has already made clear.

We become sensitive.

Think about it like friendship.

The more time you spend with someone, the easier it becomes to recognize their voice.

You can receive a voice note from your close friend without checking the name.

You know that voice.

Honestly, that’s the kind of familiarity I want us to develop with the Holy Spirit.

Not because we’re chasing voices.

Naaaa…

But because we’re learning to recognize the One who leads us.

And sometimes, His communication isn’t loud.

It can be a gentle prompting.

A Scripture that suddenly comes alive.

A restraint in your spirit.

A direction that keeps coming back.

A conviction to do something you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.

The more we fellowship with Him, the more familiar we become with His ways.

Truth

The Holy Spirit is not silent. He speaks, leads, and communicates with the believer. The question is not only whether He is speaking, but whether we have become familiar enough to recognize His voice.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, teach me to recognize Your voice. Help me become familiar with Your ways and sensitive to Your promptings. Let Your Word become the standard by which I discern what I hear, and give me the grace to obey when You lead me. Amen.

He teaches us.

He guides us.

He helps us.

He comforts us.

But there is something I don’t want us to miss.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just want to do things for you. He wants fellowship with you.

Paul ended his second letter to the Corinthians with a very interesting statement:

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.”

- 2 Corinthians 13:14

Did you catch that?

The communion of the Holy Spirit.

Communion means fellowship.

It means participation.

It means sharing life together.

And I think this is where many of us miss it.

We know how to ask the Holy Spirit for things.

“Holy Spirit, help me.”

“Holy Spirit, guide me.”

“Holy Spirit, give me wisdom.”

“Holy Spirit, help me pray.”

And yes, He does all these things.

But what if our relationship with Him is not supposed to be built only around what He can do for us?

What if we can actually enjoy Him?

Think about your closest friendships.

You don’t only call your friend when you need something.

Sometimes you just talk.

Sometimes you sit together.

Sometimes you don’t even say much.

You simply enjoy being around each other.

That’s fellowship.

And the Holy Spirit desires that kind of relationship with us.

The God of the universe wants fellowship with you.

Not just your requests.

Not just your church attendance.

Not just your service.

You.

This is why becoming conscious of the Holy Spirit is so important.

You begin to realize that you don’t have to wait until you need something before you acknowledge Him.

You can talk to Him when you’re happy.

When you’re confused.

When you’re working.

When you’re walking.

When you’re making a decision.

Even when nothing is wrong.

You can simply say,

“Holy Spirit, thank You for being here.”

And pause.

Not because you’re trying to manufacture a spiritual experience.

But because you’re learning to acknowledge the Person who is already with you.

I think this is one of the biggest shifts in our walk with the Holy Spirit:

from using His help to enjoying His fellowship.

Do you get it?

And honestly, I think there’s so much more to discover here.

Truth

The Holy Spirit is not only interested in helping you live your life; He wants you to share that life with Him.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, teach me what it means to fellowship with You. I don’t want to only come to You when I need something. I want to know You, enjoy Your presence, and become more conscious of You in my everyday life. Amen.

You just wanted to know that you weren’t alone.

Maybe nothing around you changed.

The problem was still there.

The questions were still there.

But somehow, you found the strength to keep going.

That’s one of the beautiful ministries of the Holy Spirit.

He comforts us.

Jesus said:

“And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.”

- John 14:16

The word Comforter here is the same word we’ve seen before—Paraklētos.

The One called alongside you.

The One who stays.

The One who helps.

And I think that’s important because sometimes we have a strange idea of what comfort means.

We think comfort means God will remove every uncomfortable thing from our lives.

But that’s not always how God works.

Sometimes He doesn’t remove the storm.

He gives you peace in the storm.

Sometimes He doesn’t immediately change the situation.

He changes what is happening inside you while you’re going through it.

this is very important,

Jesus never promised His followers a life without trouble.

In fact, He said,

“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

- John 16:33

Notice that Jesus didn’t say, “You won’t have trouble.”

He said, “Be of good cheer.”

Why?

Because trouble doesn’t get the final word.

And you don’t walk through it alone.

Paul gives us another beautiful picture:

“The God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation…”

- 2 Corinthians 1:3–4

This is where I think the Holy Spirit becomes very real to us.

Because sometimes the comfort of the Holy Spirit isn’t dramatic.

You wake up and somehow have strength for another day.

You pray and suddenly find words you didn’t have before.

You read a verse you’ve read many times, and this time it feels like God is speaking directly to your situation.

You are about to give up, and something inside you says,

“Keep going.”

That is the kind of ministry we can easily overlook.

We are always looking for the spectacular.

But the Holy Spirit is also present in the quiet moments where He keeps us from falling apart.

I know a friend who processes her emotions through this ministry of comfort.

She just brings the situation or problem to Him, sits with Him, and allows Him to comfort her.

There is something comforting about knowing that the same Spirit who lives in you isn’t only interested in your victories.

He is with you in your difficult days too.

He doesn’t disappear when you’re confused.

He doesn’t leave when you’re weak.

He doesn’t withdraw when you’re hurting.

He stays.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need to know.

Truth

The Holy Spirit may not always change what you’re going through immediately, but He will never leave you to go through it alone.

Holy Spirit, thank You for being my Comforter. Thank You for staying with me through every season. When life becomes difficult, help me to remember that I am not alone. Give me strength, peace, and grace to keep trusting God. Amen.

Let’s dive straight into today’s discussion.

We’ve established that the Holy Spirit is a Person.

We’ve also seen that He teaches us and guides us.

But there’s something about the Holy Spirit that I think we know but let’s break it down.

He helps us.

And honestly, I don’t think we fully understand what that means.

Jesus said:

“And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever.”

— John 14:16

The word Jesus used for Helper is Paraklētos.

It carries the idea of someone called alongside you to help, to strengthen, to encourage, to counsel and to stand with you.

In simple terms:

You have help.

Stay with me…

There are things God has called you to do that you genuinely cannot do by your own strength.

In fact, any dream you can fulfill without the HolySpirit is not from God, usually it has to be terrifying so you will need God.

And He knows that.

That’s why He didn’t just give you instructions.

He gave you help.

See what Paul said here,

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities…”

— Romans 8:26

I love that Scripture because Paul didn’t say the Holy Spirit helps us when we’re strong.

He says He helps us in our weaknesses.

That means your weakness isn’t news to God.

Your confusion isn’t news to Him.

Your inability isn’t news to Him.

Believe me, He already knew.

And His response was, “I’ll help you.”

Sometimes we think asking the Holy Spirit for help means we’ve failed.

It doesn’t.

It means we’ve finally realized that we were never supposed to depend on ourselves in the first place.

Think about prayer.

There are days when you don’t even know what to say.

Your mind is everywhere.

Your heart is heavy.

You just sit there wondering,

“God, what am I even supposed to pray?”

And the Holy Spirit helps you.

”…for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us…”

— Romans 8:26

My God!

Even when you don’t know how to pray, you have help.

And it doesn’t stop at prayer.

You have help to obey.

Help to understand.

Help to resist temptation.

Help to make decisions.

Help to endure.

Help to become more like Christ.

The Holy Spirit isn’t standing at a distance, watching you struggle and waiting for you to figure things out.

He has been called alongside you.

So maybe the next time you find yourself saying,

“I can’t do this,”

don’t stop there.

Say,

“Holy Spirit, help me.”

Because you have help!

Truth

God did not call you to do what He has called you to do without help. The Holy Spirit is God’s help living and working in you.

Yesterday, we saw that one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to teach us.

Today, let’s look at another beautiful ministry.

He guides us.

One of the things I hear believers say a lot is,

“I just wish I knew God’s will for my life.”

Or,

“I don’t know what decision to make.”

If you’ve ever said that before, you’re not alone.

The beautiful thing is that God never intended for us to figure life out by ourselves.

He gave us His Spirit to lead us.

Jesus said,

“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth…”

— John 16:13

Notice that Jesus didn’t say the Holy Spirit would push us.

He said He would guide us.

There’s a difference.

A guide doesn’t drag you.

A guide walks with you.

He shows you the way.

That also means guidance is a journey.

Sometimes we want the Holy Spirit to show us the next ten years.

But many times, He simply shows us the next step

David said,

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

— Psalm 119:105

A lamp doesn’t light up the whole road.

It gives you enough light for the next step.

I’ve found that the Holy Spirit often works the same way.

He may not tell you everything at once.

But He will faithfully lead you as you trust Him.

Sometimes His guidance comes through the Scriptures.

Sometimes through a quiet conviction in your heart.

Sometimes through wisdom.

Sometimes through godly counsel.

And sometimes, through a peace that remains even when everything around you feels uncertain.

The key is not trying to force God to speak.

The key is learning to follow when He does.

One thing I’ve learned is that the Holy Spirit delights in leading believers who are willing to trust Him.

Today, let’s look at one of those ministries.

The Holy Spirit is your Teacher.

One of the biggest mistakes I made as a believer was thinking that spiritual growth depended only on how much I read.

So I read more.

Bought books.

Listened to sermons.

Took notes.

All of those things are good, but I eventually realized something.

Reading the Bible and understanding the Bible are not the same thing.

Knowledge is important.

But understanding is a work of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said,

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

- John 14:26

Notice what Jesus didn’t say.

He didn’t say the Holy Spirit would replace the Scriptures.

He said He would teach us.

That means every time you open your Bible, you don’t approach it alone.

The Author is with you.

My God!

Think about that.

The same Holy Spirit who inspired the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21) is the One who helps us understand them.

No wonder some verses you’ve read a hundred times suddenly come alive.

The words didn’t change.

Your Teacher opened your eyes.

Paul wrote,

“The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God… because they are spiritually discerned.”

- 1 Corinthians 2:14

That’s why two people can read the same passage.

One sees words.

The other receives life.

The difference isn’t intelligence.

It’s illumination.

One prayer has changed the way I study my Bible.

Before I read, I simply say,

“Holy Spirit, teach me.”

It’s a simple prayer.

But it reminds me that I’m not just reading a book.

I’m sitting with my Teacher.

And every time He teaches, He doesn’t just increase my knowledge.

He transforms my life.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t just help you read God’s Word; He helps you understand it, believe it, and live it.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank You for being my Teacher. As I read Your Word, open my understanding. Help me not to seek information alone, but revelation that transforms my life. Teach me Your ways and lead me into truth. Amen.
