Paul sees a surprising second act for crypto after the next market crash — and it may be the opportunity almost no one is preparing for.

Paul: When the Money Printer Returns 🖨️

A contrarian take on where the next big opportunity is forming.

Imagine you control $10 billion and suddenly lose confidence in the financial system.

Where do you put it?

Shorting U.S. Treasury bonds can be dangerous because the government and Federal Reserve can intervene.

Moving into another fiat currency doesn’t solve much because most central banks operate under the same rules.

Gold and silver are proven stores of value, but they are relatively small markets that can move dramatically when large amounts of capital rush in or out.

Even the largest technology stocks may no longer feel safe when they are the source of the market’s excess.

That leaves a question few investors have seriously considered:

What happens when an enormous pool of capital goes looking for an escape hatch — and discovers crypto?

I believe that question could define the next major move in digital assets.

Not because crypto will be immune to a crash. It probably won’t be. During the initial panic, investors may sell stocks, commodities, and crypto indiscriminately as they scramble for cash.

But crypto may not be a hedge against the crash itself.

In my opinion, it could be a hedge against the response to the crash, which is a very different idea.

Most investors think about a market crash as a single event: prices collapse, fear rises, and people sell.

I see three distinct stages.

First comes the liquidation. If the artificial intelligence (AI) trade breaks, semiconductor stocks collapse and the Magnificent Seven begin falling, investors will sell almost anything they can.

Crypto could go down with everything else.

Next comes the rescue. The Fed cuts interest rates, provides liquidity and, if the crisis becomes severe enough, creates new money to support markets and the economy.

Then comes the reckoning — investors begin asking what the rescue means for the value of the currency they hold.

That third stage is where the crypto thesis becomes especially interesting.

Governments can create more dollars to support the financial system. But they can’t automatically create more Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD), Ethereum USD (ETH-USD), or other certain crypto assets simply because investors took too much risk and want to be bailed out.

The rules governing the strongest crypto networks do not change simply because the stock market is in trouble.

We saw the alternative during the 2008 financial crisis and again during COVID.

Governments and central banks issued money almost like water because they believed the consequences of doing nothing would be worse.

Perhaps they were right, but the money was not free.

More currency entered the system, purchasing power declined, and financial excesses were rewarded. We’re still living with the inflationary aftermath.

The fatal weakness of fiat currency is that its supply is discretionary.

That flexibility may preserve stability in the short term, but over repeated cycles it creates a slow, persistent transfer of value away from savers.

A currency does not need to collapse to destroy purchasing power. It can accomplish the same thing gradually, a few percentage points at a time.

Crypto offers a potential alternative, but I want to be precise about what that means.

Not every cryptocurrency is scarce, and not every token is useful. In fact, many will probably become worthless.

BTC remains the clearest example of hard digital scarcity as its supply is capped at 21 million units, and no central banker, politician or corporate executive can increase that limit in response to a crisis.

But crypto’s potential goes beyond BTC. Smart-contract networks such as ETH provide infrastructure for applications and economic activity.

Decentralized finance (DeFi) networks allow people to trade, lend and transfer assets without relying entirely on traditional intermediaries.

Other networks provide data, payments or specialized services that can support a growing digital economy.

These assets should not all be evaluated the same way.

BTC’s value proposition rests primarily on its scarcity as digital money.

A smart-contract platform should be evaluated by the activity taking place on its network. And a DeFi token should prove its worth through the real-world use of its services.

That is why I like to use a five-part framework when comparing crypto assets.

First, I look at supply. Is it fixed, predictable, or subject to discretionary expansion?

Second, I look at utility. Does the asset enable real human or economic activity?

Third, I look at the scale of that activity. How much value currently moves through the network?

Fourth, I look at growth. Is adoption expanding or is the excitement based primarily on speculation?

Finally, I look at resistance to moral hazard. If the network suffers a hack, failure, or crisis, can insiders simply create more tokens to cover the losses?

This framework helps separate crypto assets developing real scarcity and network effects from coins surviving primarily on marketing and hope.

There is another piece of this thesis that I believe most investors are overlooking.

Money moving into crypto often passes through dollar-backed stablecoins. Stablecoin providers, in turn, hold dollars and short-term U.S. government debt to support those digital tokens.

That means growing crypto adoption does not necessarily undermine the dollar. It could create additional demand for dollars and Treasury bills.

Paradoxically, a larger crypto market may serve certain U.S. interests by expanding the use of dollar-backed assets worldwide. If that continues, the government may have less incentive to obstruct crypto than many skeptics assume.

Meanwhile, the crypto market remains small compared with the world’s pool of capital. It does not require every pension fund, corporation or wealthy family to embrace digital assets.

A relatively small reallocation could have an enormous impact, especially if institutional investors begin viewing crypto as an escape valve from unlimited monetary issuance.

Now, this thesis isn’t guaranteed. It would weaken if institutional adoption stalled, network activity stopped growing, or governments imposed severe restrictions on access.

It would also be damaged by major security failures, discretionary changes to token supplies, or evidence that crypto remains nothing more than a leveraged extension of technology stocks.

Those are risks I’m watching closely.

Crypto has already experienced a major leverage washout. Prices fell, speculators were forced out, and sentiment collapsed.

That doesn’t prevent another decline, but it means crypto isn’t entering this period with the same extreme enthusiasm now visible in certain parts of the stock market.

So, I never tell anyone to bet the farm.

An asymmetric opportunity doesn’t require an irresponsible position.

The objective is to gain enough exposure to benefit if the thesis succeeds without allowing crypto’s volatility to threaten your financial security if it fails.

In failure mode, crypto could fall rapidly as investors abandon anything perceived as speculative.

In success mode, it could become one of the primary destinations for capital seeking protection from the monetary response to the next crisis.

That is the big opportunity I see right now.

The next crash may initially appear to weaken the case for crypto. But should the rate cuts begin, the liquidity programs return, and the money supply starts expanding again, investors may recognize something much larger.

In my view, the crash was never the real crypto catalyst — the response to it was.

How to spot when the crowd may be revealing risk — or opportunity.

Many investors use social media to find the next big trade.

I use it for something else . . . to see when the crowd has stopped thinking.

After watching the dot-com bubble, the housing boom, the financial crisis, crypto, and now the AI frenzy, I’ve learned that human behavior changes far less than investors like to believe.

Greed, fear, envy, and regret have always moved markets, along with the irresistible desire to believe that this time really is different.

Social media hasn’t changed that psychology but rather turned it into a live broadcast.

In earlier cycles, excitement traveled through magazines, television, seminars, message boards, and conversations among friends.

Today, however, there’s almost no delay between what investors feel and what the market can see.

The excitement arrives directly on your phone through screenshots of enormous gains, promises of effortless wealth, and comment sections ridiculing anyone who questions the prevailing story.

The market cycle itself hasn’t changed, but social media makes its emotions easier to see — and harder to escape.

This matters because social media supercharges one of the most dangerous habits in investing: Treating what is happening now as if it will continue forever.

At market extremes, investors stop thinking in probabilities and begin compressing both time and risk.

A promising tech becomes a guaranteed fortune within months . . . a rising asset becomes something that supposedly cannot fall . . . a temporary downturn becomes the beginning of permanent stagnation.

The further the market moves in one direction, the harder it becomes for people to imagine any other outcome.

That is when a legitimate investment story can become most dangerous.

The internet transformed the world, but many internet stocks in 1999 still weren’t worth their prices. Housing created real wealth, but that didn’t mean home prices could never decline nationally in a meaningful way.

One clear example in my feed right now is artificial intelligence (AI).

Post after post points toward the same future: AI spending will keep climbing, demand will keep accelerating, and the leading stocks will keep winning.

I believe AI will inevitably transform entire industries. But the AI revolution can be real while the “AI Nirvana” currently priced into certain stocks proves wildly unrealistic.

One of the most expensive mistakes in investing is assuming that a true story automatically makes a good investment. The story can be right while the price is completely wrong.

Social media makes that distinction harder to see because it surrounds you with apparent proof.

When your feed is filled with people profiting from the same idea, skepticism feels foolish. You fear being the only person who has failed to understand the future.

It also encourages people to perform their convictions publicly. After months of insisting an investment can only rise — or that an entire market is dead — changing your mind can feel like admitting defeat.

But the market doesn’t care what you posted six months ago, nor does it reward loyalty to an outdated opinion.

Instead, it rewards the ability to recognize when the facts, the price or the risk have changed.

That is why, when most of my feed starts saying the same thing, I don’t ask whether the story sounds convincing.

I ask what the price now assumes.

That’s part of how I’m evaluating the AI boom and the bubble I believe is forming within it.

I’m not asking whether AI will matter as I believe it will. I’m asking what must go right for today’s prices to make sense.

How quickly must spending and demand grow? How much future success is already reflected in the price, and what happens if the payoff takes longer than investors expect?

This forces me to step outside the emotion of the moment and examine the expectations underneath the investment. They help separate a real long-term trend from an unrealistic short-term narrative.

Now, that doesn’t mean I automatically bet against anything popular. Markets can continue moving long after sentiment appears extreme, and being early and being wrong can feel exactly the same for a long time.

When nearly everyone agrees, that isn’t automatically a sell signal, but it is a sign to stop accepting the story at face value.

The same psychology appears in reverse once prices turn.

The screenshots disappear, confidence becomes anger, and the opportunity that was supposed to change the world is suddenly declared dead.

At market bottoms, investors make the same mistake from the opposite direction.

They assume the pain will last indefinitely, say the recovery could take decades and promise themselves they will never own that kind of investment again.

The emotion changes, but the habit of assuming the current trend will continue does not.

This is why I view social media less as a source of investment ideas and more as a real-time sentiment dashboard.

I watch what people celebrate, which risks they ignore and when skepticism, or optimism, become socially unacceptable.

Remember that your feed is not a neutral picture of the market.

The loudest and most emotional opinions tend to travel furthest, making a popular narrative appear even more certain than it really is.

That certainty is information, but not in the way most investors think.

Major tops and bottoms are usually processes, not single days that ring a bell.

Housing began weakening before the broader financial crisis erupted. Different parts of the technology market peaked at different times during the dot-com collapse.

Prices, psychology, and economic consequences don’t always turn together.

You don’t need to identify the precise top or bottom to benefit from recognizing an extreme. You need the judgment to see when confidence has outrun reality, or when fear has overwhelmed it.

That judgment becomes even more valuable as the crowd grows faster, louder and more certain. The crowd is always telling you something, just rarely what it thinks it is telling you.

Recognizing an extreme is only the beginning. The challenge is knowing what to do with that information.

Paul: The Game Wall Street Wants You Playing 🎭

How to look beyond Wall Street’s scorecard.

Every three months, Wall Street puts on one of its biggest shows.

A company reports earnings that beats estimates by a few pennies, and the stock jumps 10%.

Another company delivers what looks like a perfectly good quarter, but guidance comes in slightly below expectations and the stock gets crushed.

Within minutes, you’ll hear people explaining what it all supposedly means.

Great company. Terrible quarter. Strong fundamentals. Weak outlook.

And investors react accordingly.

But after watching this cycle play out for decades, including during my time on Wall Street, I’ve come to a very different conclusion:

Much of what investors call “earnings season” has very little to do with fundamental investing.

It’s a game.

And it’s one that Wall Street has become very good at getting everyone else to play.

As Q2 earnings season winds down, think about how much attention has been devoted to asking whether the company beat or missed Wall Street’s estimate.

That question has become so ingrained in investing that most people never stop to think about how strange it actually is.

A group of analysts creates an estimate. Traders spend weeks positioning around that estimate. The company reports its numbers.

Then billions of dollars can move because the result came in slightly above or below a number Wall Street created in the first place.

To me, that’s not fundamental investing.

That’s event trading.

And Wall Street loves events because events create volatility, which in turn creates trading.

And that trading creates opportunities to make money from spreads, fees, options, and rapid movements in stock prices.

There are entire hedge fund strategies built around this quarterly ritual.

That’s one reason you’ll often see a stock begin moving well before a company ever reports.

Funds can spend the two or three weeks leading up to earnings positioning themselves for the event.

Then the numbers come out, the stock reacts and, over the following week or two, those trades begin to unwind.

So when we see a stock suddenly surge or collapse around earnings, I like to ask whether the value of this business really changed that much overnight.

Sometimes it did.

But often, I believe what you’re seeing has as much to do with positioning, expectations, and the unwinding of trades as it does with the long-term value of the company.

That distinction matters because one of the biggest mistakes I see investors make is assuming a company that consistently beats estimates must be a great investment.

It sounds logical, but businesses don’t operate in 90-day increments just because Wall Street does.

Management teams know how important these quarterly expectations have become.

They know what can happen to their stock if they disappoint Wall Street, and they know what can happen when they deliver the numbers investors want to see.

That creates an obvious incentive to manage expectations and make decisions that look good over the next quarter.

The problem is, what makes Wall Street happy for the next 90 days isn’t always what creates the most value over the next five or more years.

I’d much rather own a company willing to invest aggressively in a massive opportunity — even if those investments temporarily hurt margins — than one sacrificing its long-term future just to beat an analyst’s estimate by three cents.

That’s why I’m asking different questions.

I want to know where the business is going.

Is its market getting bigger? Is demand likely to be substantially higher several years from now?

Does the company have an advantage competitors will struggle to replicate?

Is management investing ahead of a trend that Wall Street doesn’t fully recognize yet?

Those are fundamental questions.

Whether earnings per share came in at $1.04 instead of the expected $1.01 tells me far less.

And this is where the earnings game can actually create opportunities for us.

Some companies refuse — or simply fail — to give Wall Street exactly what it wants every 90 days.

Maybe they’re spending heavily to expand capacity or margins temporarily fall.

Perhaps they miss an estimate. Maybe their stock goes nowhere while investors chase whichever company just delivered the quarter’s biggest surprise.

Eventually, investors lose patience. The stock gets written off as a “dog,” a “bag” or simply not worth their time.

And that’s often when I become more interested because a stock Wall Street doesn’t want today isn’t necessarily a bad business.

Sometimes Wall Street is simply using the wrong timeframe.

And if I believe the business is becoming substantially more valuable while investors are focused on whether it beat an estimate this quarter, that disconnect can create exactly the kind of opportunity I’m looking for.

Now, I’m not telling you to ignore earnings reports.

There’s valuable information in them. I want to see revenue, margins, cash flow, demand, and what management is telling us about the business.

What I don’t care nearly as much about is the scoreboard Wall Street puts around those numbers.

As Q2 earnings season comes to an end, you’re going to hear plenty about which companies “won” and which ones “lost.”

Let Wall Street obsess over that.

They’re trying to figure out who won the last 90 days. I’m trying to figure out who can win the next few years.

That difference in timeframe is one of the biggest advantages I believe individual investors can have.

Paul: Stocks Say Peace. Oil Doesn’t.

A contrarian take on where the next big opportunity is forming.

War? Peace? Stalemate?

Everyone seems to have an opinion about where the U.S.-Iran conflict goes next.

But after more than 30 years in markets, I’ve learned that when the answer isn’t clear, I don’t spend too much time trying to predict it.

I look at how the markets are voting, and right now, they’re casting very different ballots.

Oil is voting for something other than a quick peace, while gold is voting for more inflation.

The bond market is beginning to tell us that inflation — and higher interest rates — may be more persistent than many investors expect.

Stocks, meanwhile, remain close to their all-time highs, essentially betting that this all works out: that conflict cools, oil comes down, inflation follows, interest rates eventually decline, and the bull market continues.

Maybe stocks are right, but when markets disagree this dramatically, I pay attention.

There’s so much noise surrounding Iran that you could spend your entire day trying to decipher the next headline.

One day, there’s progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The next, negotiations stall or tensions rise again.

As of today, there’s been no progress toward reviving the interim U.S.-Iran peace deal, while renewed attacks on shipping have kept risks around Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb very much alive.

So, where does it go from here?

No one can say for certain, and the important thing is that we don’t need to know.

I don’t need to predict the next statement from Iran or President Trump. I want to see what happens after the statement.

Politicians can make promises, governments can posture, and analysts can make forecasts.

Money is different.

When investors start putting millions and billions of dollars behind a view, I pay attention.

And energy has been reacting almost immediately to every meaningful change in the Iran story.

We’ve seen Brent crude move above $100 during this conflict before falling sharply as hopes for diplomacy improved. Today, Brent is hovering around $90.

You could look at that and say the oil story is over, but I look at it differently.

The speed of these moves tells me just how sensitive the energy market has become to what happens next.

That’s one reason I remain bullish on oil today: the Middle East risk premium hasn’t gone away.

The market doesn’t need the Strait of Hormuz to completely shut down for oil prices to remain supported. The risk of disruption matters, too.

Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints.

As long as uncertainty surrounds its reopening and the ability to move energy safely through the region — then buyers, refiners, and traders have to account for the possibility that physical barrels become harder to secure.

That uncertainty has a price.

So the important question isn’t whether oil is at $100 today. It’s what could send it back there — and how much uncertainty gets priced in before anything actually happens.

That’s also where I start thinking beyond the obvious trade. Everyone sees Iran and thinks about oil, but I want to know what happens next.

If ships can’t efficiently move through Hormuz or Bab el-Mandeb, voyages become longer. Ships are tied up for more time, effectively reducing the number available to move the same amount of cargo.

That can push shipping rates higher, which is one reason I’ve been watching shipping so closely.

But my interest in energy goes well beyond shipping and even this war.

I’ve been bullish on energy more broadly because reliable energy is becoming increasingly valuable.

That includes oil and natural gas, but also the electricity and utility companies that provide the power our economy depends on.

We can see what’s happening with AI with data centers requiring enormous amounts of electricity around the clock.

Natural gas remains an important source of reliable power. Our electrical infrastructure needs investment, and despite years of predictions about its demise, the global economy still depends heavily on oil.

So, I don’t see one oil trade tied to one geopolitical event. I see opportunities developing globally across oil, natural gas, and electricity.

Some of those opportunities may even have a defensive element.

If the broader stock market weakens, I believe investors could gravitate toward companies tied to something the economy can’t simply stop using: energy.

Some of the electricity and utility-related positions we’ve been watching also pay dividends, which may give them more support if investors begin looking for safer places to put their money.

Energy can also behave in surprising ways when markets become stressed.

I remember seeing that firsthand in 2008, when natural gas suddenly rocketed higher during the chaos.

It seemed strange with investors selling almost everything, but stressed markets don’t always behave the way you expect. '

When leveraged investors are forced to close short positions, they have to buy those positions back, and enough forced buying can send prices sharply higher.

That taught me something I haven’t forgotten: don’t assume everything will behave the way it’s “supposed” to when markets come under pressure.

And this is where the energy story becomes much bigger than energy itself.

Higher oil raises transportation, shipping and production costs.

Businesses either absorb those increases or pass them along, making inflation harder to bring down. If inflation remains elevated, expectations for substantially lower interest rates become harder to justify.

That’s why I’m watching oil and bonds together.

I believe oil is questioning the peace narrative, while gold is questioning the idea that inflation is behind us. And the bond market is questioning expectations for lower interest rates.

Yet stocks are still pricing in a lot of things going right, and maybe that’s exactly what happens. But that’s a lot of good news already embedded in stock prices.

Now, being bullish on energy doesn’t mean I believe oil goes straight up.

If oil gets high enough and stays there long enough, eventually it creates its own cure.

Economists call it demand destruction.

I call it something simpler: people can’t afford it.

Consumers cut back, demand weakens and eventually high prices begin bringing themselves back down.

If that happens, we’ll adjust. If peace returns and the risk premium fades, or if prices start telling me the thesis is wrong, we’ll change course.

Conviction doesn’t mean refusing to change your mind. It means knowing what you’re looking for and recognizing when conditions change.

And we’ve been acting on what we’re seeing now.

Paul: Why This Time Could Be Different 🤯

A contrarian take on where the next big opportunity is forming.

The Federal Reserve recently chose to leave interest rates unchanged.

Frankly, that wasn’t the part I found interesting.

While much of Wall Street was busy dissecting every word from the Fed’s latest statement, I was focused somewhere else entirely:

The bond market.

Specifically, I was watching short-term Treasury yields.

Think of them as the market’s short-term interest rates — the return investors earn by lending money to the U.S. government for anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

I’m frequently checking what short-term Treasury yields are telling me now.

Because over the years, I’ve learned something that has shaped the way I invest: The bond market often tells the story before the stock market does.

When short-term Treasury yields rise, cash becomes more attractive, borrowing becomes more expensive, and speculative investments become increasingly difficult to justify.

In other words, the financial system slowly begins tightening.

Money becomes harder to access, and investors become less willing to take risks.

I’ve watched that pattern play out ahead of many of the biggest market declines I’ve studied.

Eventually, something breaks. That’s what has my attention today.

For months now, I’ve been laying out the case for why I believe the market remains vulnerable to a much larger correction or market crash.

And lately, the message coming from the bond market has only strengthened that conviction.

I believe the trigger could be what the bond market is telling us through rising short-term Treasury yields.

To me, those yields are sending a clear message that demand for cash is increasing.

When investors become nervous, they begin selling risk assets to raise cash.

The problem is that everyone wants liquidity at the same time, and there simply isn’t enough cash in the system to satisfy every seller.

So prices begin falling, lower prices trigger more selling, and more selling creates an even greater demand for cash.

Before long, what began as an orderly decline becomes a self-reinforcing cycle as investors grow increasingly desperate to sell at almost any price.

That’s how markets can suddenly shift from calm to panic.

The bottom line is that the crash scenario I’ve been laying out for months now appears to be on.

If that unfolds, I expect the Fed to respond — and history suggests it almost certainly will.

If financial markets begin freezing up, we’ve seen the Fed’s playbook before: Lower interest rates, inject liquidity, and restore confidence.

But the real question isn’t what the Fed does, but it’s what investors do next.

And I believe that’s where this market cycle could become very different from the last one.

Back in 2020, the Fed flooded the financial system with money to prevent an economic collapse.

At the time, investors largely welcomed it. We saw that stocks surged, speculative assets took off, and more liquidity meant higher prices.

But I don’t believe we should assume history will repeat itself.

Today, we’re looking at that experience through a very different lens.

We’ve spent years living with persistent inflation and watching the purchasing power of our money steadily decline.

We’ve seen firsthand what can happen when trillions of dollars are created in an incredibly short period of time.

Experiences like that change people, and when that happens, markets change.

That’s why I’m not convinced investors will respond to the next round of monetary stimulus the same way they did before.

Instead of celebrating more liquidity, I believe many investors will begin asking where they can own something that can’t simply be printed into existence.

To me, that’s the conversation that really matters.

Because once investors begin thinking that way, they’re no longer chasing the hottest momentum trade.

They’re searching for scarcity.

Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD) is one example. No matter how many dollars the Fed creates, 21 million BTC will always remain 21 million BTC.

Its supply doesn’t change because monetary policy changes.

That’s exactly what gives it value in an environment where fiat currencies can be expanded indefinitely.

But as I’ve been sharing over the past couple of years, BTC isn’t the only answer.

Gold has protected purchasing power through changing monetary environments for thousands of years, and I believe it could once again become increasingly attractive if investors begin looking beyond traditional financial assets.

I also believe this environment could create compelling opportunities in parts of the fintech sector.

If the financial system continues evolving, investors won’t simply be looking for scarce assets.

They’ll also be looking for the businesses helping shape the future of money, digital payments, financial infrastructure, and how capital moves through the global economy.

That’s one reason I’ve been paying such close attention to companies operating in those areas.

Every major market cycle creates new leaders, and I’m watching this capital rotation unfold today.

I also see investors making the same mistake of assuming tomorrow’s winners will look exactly like yesterday’s.

History rarely works that way. The investors who outperform are ones who recognize the shift while everyone else is still debating whether it’s happening.

Paul: History Doesn’t Repeat But Investors Do 🔁

A contrarian take at where the market’s headed next.

If you asked most people what causes a market crash, they’d probably give you the same answer . . .

A recession, a financial crisis, or some unexpected event that nobody could have seen coming.

After 30+ studying markets, I’ve come to a different conclusion: Crashes rarely begin with bad news.

More often than not, they begin with too much good news.

That’s why I’ve found myself thinking about 1987.

While history doesn’t exactly repeat, markets are still driven by people.

And people have a remarkable habit of making the same mistakes generation after generation.

Most investors remember Black Monday because the Dow Jones Industrial Average collapsed 22.6% in a single day — still the largest one-day percentage decline in modern market history.

What far fewer people remember is what the market looked like before it happened.

It didn’t look dangerous. Quite the opposite.

America was optimistic. Ronald Reagan’s economic policies had restored confidence after a difficult decade, and deregulation was fueling business.

A weaker dollar was helping exports. Stocks had climbed more than 30% that year, and investors were convinced they were entering a new era of prosperity.

If that sounds familiar, it should.

Today, I believe we have our own version of that story called artificial intelligence (AI).

As I’ve clarified before, I’m not bearish on AI.

I believe it will become one of the most important technological revolutions of our lifetime. It will reshape industries, create entirely new businesses, and generate enormous wealth over the next decade.

But that’s precisely why I think investors need to be careful.

Markets have taught me that bubbles almost never form around bad ideas.

They form around great ones — such as railroads, the Internet, housing, and now AI.

This is the technology that eventually changes the world.

The mistake investors make is believing all of that future success should already be reflected in today’s stock prices.

That’s what happened in 1987. The week before Black Monday, the Dow quietly fell almost 10%.

There weren’t any catastrophic headlines, nor was there a recession, banking crisis, or event that explained why investors suddenly started selling.

But beneath the surface, the market had already become fragile.

Margin debt had climbed rapidly as investors borrowed against portfolios that had been rising for months.

When markets reopened on Monday morning, those losses immediately triggered margin pressure.

Then the mechanics of the market took over.

Many of the largest companies in America — including IBM, Exxon, General Electric and AT&T — couldn’t even establish opening prices because sell orders overwhelmed buyers.

Around 11 o’clock that morning, the Dow was already down roughly 9%.

A rally before noon briefly convinced investors the worst was over — except that it wasn’t

Selling intensified throughout the afternoon. Margin calls forced investors to liquidate positions, which pushed prices lower, triggering even more selling.

By the final hour, panic had completely replaced optimism.

The Dow lost another 13% during the last sixty minutes of trading alone, finishing the day down 22.6%.

The lesson here was that the market had become dangerously vulnerable long before anyone realized it.

That’s why I believe investors spend too much time trying to predict what will cause the next crash.

The trigger is almost impossible to know, but the setup is much easier to recognize.

Markets become fragile and risky when:

⚠️ Optimism becomes extreme

⚠️ Expectations become unrealistic

⚠️ Everyone owns the same trade.

⚠️ When borrowed money quietly fuels rising prices.

⚠️ And when investors begin believing that this time is different

Those are the conditions I see developing today.

These similarities I see are the result of several warning signs beginning to stack on top of one another — much like they did before previous major market breaks.

It’s worth noting that none of these warning signs, by themselves, guarantee a crash.

Neither did they in 1987.

It’s when they begin appearing together — while optimism is widespread and leverage is elevated — that markets become exceptionally fragile.

Today, a remarkably small number of companies account for an outsized share of the major indexes.

Semiconductor companies, memory manufacturers and AI infrastructure businesses have become the trade everyone feels they have to own.

Then layer leverage on top of that.

Margin debt has climbed to historic levels as investors borrow against portfolios that have already appreciated dramatically.

That strategy works beautifully while prices continue rising but becomes brutal when they don’t.

Leverage doesn’t simply magnify gains — it accelerates forced selling.

What concerns me even more is how interconnected today’s markets have become.

Back in 1987, “portfolio insurance” created a feedback loop that accelerated the selling. It was designed to reduce risk but ended up amplifying it.

Today, I see a different version of the same problem.

The AI supply chain stretches across the U.S., Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.

The same companies sit inside ETFs around the world, owned by millions of investors — many using borrowed money to increase their exposure.

When one market begins liquidating, those pressures spread.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been closely watching developments in South Korea.

As policymakers there move to cool speculation, we’ve already started seeing cracks appear across parts of the AI supply chain.

Semiconductor shares have begun rolling over, and the first dominoes are starting to wobble.

No one knows if they will all fall.

But I’ve learned it’s far better to recognize a dangerous setup early and manage risk as it unfolds than explain it afterward.

That’s why I’ve been telling Mampilly Research members for months that this isn’t the time to chase every new high.

We’ve become more selective to manage risk and to hold more cash when appropriate.

We’re also securing profits sooner.

I often tell members there are moments when your priority shouldn’t be the return on your money — it should be the return of your money.

In my opinion, this is one of those moments.

Eventually, AI is bound to create extraordinary opportunities.

The only question is whether today’s prices already assume tomorrow’s success.

History suggests that’s where investors usually get into trouble.

Whether this unfolds as a healthy correction or something much more severe, our approach remains the same.

Paul: Don't Get Stuck Between Two Games ⚠️

Before you buy or sell another stock, answer this one question.

I can usually tell how an investor will behave during a market correction before they ever buy their first stock.

It has nothing to do with intelligence, experience, or even what they’re investing in.

It comes down to one simple question almost nobody asks themselves:

What game am I actually playing?

Most people think investing is just one thing, when in reality there are two very different approaches.

The first is the Performance Game, where your goal is to grow your portfolio while carefully managing risk, and price matters.

You take profits when they’re available, cut losses when your rules tell you to, and don’t let one position do lasting damage to your portfolio.

The second is the Value Game where you’re buying pieces of businesses, not stock prices.

If your research tells you a company is worth substantially more than today’s market price, falling prices often become buying opportunities rather than reasons to sell.

Both approaches can be successful.

The mistake isn’t choosing one but rather trying to play both at the same time.

That’s exactly what I see happening every time markets become volatile.

When prices are climbing, almost nobody questions their strategy.

Rising markets make everyone feel like a great investor, but once stocks begin falling, confidence disappears almost overnight.

Suddenly investors are asking whether they should buy more, sell everything, or simply wait and hope prices recover.

To me, those questions reveal a much bigger problem that you haven’t decided what kind of investor you actually are.

At Mampilly Research we’re playing the game that’s focused on price, performance, and portfolio returns.

Our job isn’t simply to own great companies forever. Our responsibility is to grow capital while managing risk.

As mentioned earlier, that means recognizing that price matters, because price determines returns.

If a stock breaks down and violates our risk parameters, often we don’t sit there hoping it’ll recover.

We follow a disciplined process, which is why each of our model portfolios has predefined stop-loss levels based on its risk profile.

Our more conservative portfolios use tighter stops, while our more aggressive portfolios allow for greater volatility. Those percentages aren’t fixed forever, either.

After a major correction, when prices have reset and a new bull market begins, we’ll often widen those ranges because lower-priced markets naturally experience larger percentage swings.

The framework adapts, but the discipline doesn’t.

Neither of these investing philosophies is wrong, but what’s dangerous is trying to combine them.

Many investors can’t tell if they are a long-term value investor when a stock is falling — and then they suddenly become a momentum investor once prices start rising again.

That’s how emotions end up making costly decisions your strategy never would.

And emotions almost always revolve around one thing: Price.

Most people believe they invest based on research, but I think they invest based on how prices make them feel.

The higher prices go, the stronger the desire becomes to buy, even when common sense tells us we’re getting a worse deal than we could have months earlier.

FOMO (fear of missing out) is one of the most powerful forces in investing, and it regularly overwhelms logic.

Then the opposite happens, which is that prices fall.

Nothing may have changed about the underlying business, but suddenly investors become convinced it’s dangerous.

The same stock they couldn’t wait to own 30% higher becomes something they desperately want to avoid.

That’s because our brains naturally associate rising prices with safety and falling prices with risk, even though successful investing often requires thinking the opposite way.

There’s another psychological trap that’s even more subtle.

When our portfolios have been climbing for months, we quietly begin believing our gains are somehow permanent.

We assume our stocks are different.

Behavioral economists call this the endowment effect, where we instinctively place more value on something simply because we already own it.

The market doesn’t care. Prices are temporary as they always have been.

That’s why I’ve spent months reminding our members not to become emotionally attached to paper gains.

Gains come and go because prices change. When markets become extended and optimism reaches extremes, I believe it’s time to begin taking money off the table.

Sell on the way up, build cash while everyone else is celebrating, and strengthen the stable portion of your portfolio before you feel like you need to.

Ironically, selling near market highs is psychologically just as difficult as buying near market lows.

Selling means giving up the possibility of watching prices continue climbing, while buying means accepting they could fall even further before they recover.

Neither decision feels good.

That’s exactly why so few investors consistently make them. And the market rewards discipline far more often than it rewards comfort.

That’s how I think about investing.

If there’s one lesson I hope you take away from this, it’s that investing becomes much simpler once you decide what game you’re playing.

If you’re investing based on business value, expect to become more interested as prices decline and be prepared to accumulate patiently.

If you’re investing for portfolio performance, have a clear plan for taking profits, cutting losses, managing risk, and protecting capital before emotions ever enter the equation.

Just don’t confuse one approach with the other.

Because once you know which game you’re playing, the market becomes far less confusing, and your decisions become far more consistent.

Paul: Bitcoin's Price Is Lying . . . 🤯

A contrarian look at where the next big opportunity is forming.

Every market cycle has a moment when almost everyone starts believing the trend that’s happening today will continue forever.

In bull markets, investors convince themselves prices can only go higher.

Every headline feels like confirmation, every rally attracts more buyers, and every pullback gets dismissed as another buying opportunity.

Bearish periods work exactly the same way, but in reverse.

The longer prices drift lower, the easier it becomes to believe the entire story is broken.

Investors stop talking about opportunity and start discussing what went wrong.

Suddenly every rally is “just another dead cat bounce,” every headline becomes bearish, and the loudest voices on social media declare that Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD) is finished.

I’ve seen this happen over and over again throughout my investing career.

And almost every time, the crowd becomes the most convinced right before the market begins moving in the opposite direction.

That’s why I think investors are watching the wrong thing today in crypto.

They’re focused almost entirely on BTC’s price . . . but I’m focused on what’s happening underneath it.

Those are two very different stories.

It’s easy enough to understand why sentiment has become so negative.

BTC is still trading roughly 49% below its all-time high. For many investors, that chart alone is enough to conclude the story is over.

I think that’s exactly where the crowd is wrong.

I’m still bullish on BTC, crypto, and blockchain over the long term because the forces driving this trend haven’t weakened — they’ve become stronger.

In fact, after spending years studying BTC’s halving cycles, I actually think there’s a reasonable chance we see one more marginal low over the next few months.

Maybe BTC slips slightly below its previous low before finally finding its footing.

If that happens, I think this will help validate the bull case.

Every major market has to shake out the last wave of speculation before it can move sustainably higher.

The traders using too much leverage, the investors who arrived expecting quick profits, and the people who bought simply because everyone else was buying . . . they all tend to exit near the end of that process.

Markets have an incredible ability to test conviction before rewarding it.

If BTC does make one more low later this year, I believe it will simply finish flushing out the last tourists before the next major advance begins.

What’s fascinating to me is that sentiment today couldn’t be more disconnected from reality.

The emotional mood surrounding crypto is about as negative as I’ve seen this cycle, yet the actual industry continues making extraordinary progress.

Consider how:

🚀 Stablecoins are rapidly becoming part of the global financial system.

🚀 Tokenization is moving from theory into real-world adoption.

🚀 Blockchain infrastructure continues scaling.

🚀 Institutional participation keeps increasing.

🚀 Crypto is becoming more useful, accessible, and integrated into the financial system with each passing quarter.

Now imagine for a moment that all of those same developments were happening while BTC was making new all-time highs.

Investors would be calling it proof that the next great bull market had already arrived.

Instead, because prices remain below their highs, many people simply ignore the evidence.

That’s one of the biggest investing mistakes I see.

People assume sentiment follows facts, but it doesn’t

Sentiment follows price.

When prices go up, investors suddenly discover endless reasons to be optimistic.

When prices go down, those same investors become convinced something must be fundamentally wrong.

Very little actually changes beneath the surface. Only the emotions change.

That’s why I pay far more attention to the evidence than the narrative.

And one signal I’ve been watching closely actually reinforces my bullish view.

When BTC sold off recently, many of the smaller, less liquid cryptocurrencies didn’t collapse the way they typically would during the beginning of a major bear market.

Historically, that’s exactly where panic selling shows up first. Smaller assets usually lose support well before BTC does.

This time, many of them held up surprisingly well.

To me, that’s an important divergence.

It suggests that much of the forced selling has already taken place and that the weakest holders may finally be out of the market.

That matters because markets don’t always rally when buyers suddenly become aggressive.

Sometimes they rally simply because there are very few sellers left.

When large institutional investors begin accumulating positions, they aren’t driven by fear or excitement.

They simply follow the evidence.

If they decide they want significant exposure while available supply is limited, prices don’t gradually drift higher — they often move much faster than anyone expects.

Ironically, what looks like weak liquidity today can become one of the biggest catalysts for higher prices tomorrow.

I also think it’s helpful to compare crypto with another trend everyone is excited about today: artificial intelligence (AI).

Both are transformational technologies.

But from an investing standpoint, they’re sitting at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum.

AI has become one of the most loved investment stories in the world. Optimism is everywhere with enormous expectations.

Much of that future success has already been reflected in prices.

Crypto is almost the exact opposite where the technology keeps improving, adoption keeps accelerating, and utility keeps expanding — and yet the dominant emotion remains skepticism.

That’s usually where the best opportunities live.

The market doesn’t hand out extraordinary returns after everyone already agrees something is revolutionary.

The biggest gains come when reality improves long before investor psychology catches up.

I think it’s still entirely possible that BTC could experience one more sharp decline.

But if it happens, it won’t change my outlook . . . it may actually strengthen it.

Because the greatest bull markets rarely begin when investors feel confident.

They begin when pessimism has reached its peak, sellers have exhausted themselves, and almost nobody believes a new advance is possible.

That’s why I’m paying much less attention to today’s headlines than to the long-term evidence unfolding underneath them.

The headlines tell us BTC is struggling, but the evidence tells me crypto has never been building a stronger foundation.

Over time, it’s almost always the evidence — not the emotion — that determines where markets ultimately go.

Market Psychology: The Certainty Trap 🎯

Why investors often make big mistakes when looking for certainty.

One of the biggest psychological pitfalls for investors is something known as probability neglect — the tendency to think in absolutes instead of probabilities.

We naturally want certainty.

We want to know which stock will be the biggest winner, which sector will outperform, and which trend is guaranteed to succeed.

But markets rarely offer that kind of clarity.

In fact, one of the biggest lessons is that certainty is often an illusion.

The best investors are often those who become comfortable making thoughtful decisions without having all the answers.

Rather than asking: “Will this investment work?

It’s worth asking: “Given what we know today, are the odds in our favor?”

That’s a very different way of thinking.

Most investors search for certainty before they’re willing to act.

But professional investors understand that certainty usually arrives after the opportunity has already become obvious.

By then, prices have often moved significantly higher, expectations have risen, and much of the potential upside has already been captured.

History is full of examples.

No one knew with certainty that the internet would reshape the economy or how smartphones would transform the world.

No one knows today exactly how AI will evolve over the next decade.

The future has always been uncertain.

Yet investors often convince themselves they need complete confidence before making an investment.

Ironically, that search for certainty can become its own psychological trap.

Markets reward investors who can weigh probabilities, manage risk, and act before the outcome becomes obvious to everyone else.

That doesn’t mean taking reckless bets . . . but rather recognizing that every investment carries uncertainty, and the goal isn’t to eliminate it.

We want to find situations where the potential reward appears to outweigh the risk — and then remain disciplined and willing to adapt as new information emerges.

Paul: Where I’m Betting on AI Today 🤖

A contrarian look at where the next big opportunity is forming.

If you’ve followed the market over the past two years, you’ve seen Wall Street rally around the same message that there’s only one way to profit from artificial intelligence (AI):

Buy the chip and memory companies, and the exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that own them.

For a while, that looked like the easiest money in the world.

But I’ve been investing long enough to know that when everyone believes a trade is guaranteed, that’s usually time for me to be the most cautious.

Not because I doubt the technology but because I understand how bubbles work.

If history teaches us anything, it's that every great market boom eventually becomes fueled by excitement, momentum, and the fear of missing out.

On the way up, demand becomes almost impossible to satisfy. Investors make money, confidence grows, and leverage pours gasoline on the fire.

As gains accumulate, people borrow more to buy even more. That additional buying pushes prices higher, creating even larger gains, which attract even more investors.

Eventually, the cycle begins feeding itself. Price becomes the story, and the companies almost become secondary.

But markets don’t move in one direction forever as eventually momentum slows.

And in my experience, that’s when the real damage begins.

The AI, semiconductor, and memory trade appears to have lost the relentless momentum that carried it higher for so long. Once that happens, leverage begins working in reverse.

The same borrowed money that pushed prices relentlessly upward suddenly becomes the market’s biggest seller.

As prices begin falling, leveraged accounts quickly fall out of compliance.

Investors don’t always sell because they’ve changed their minds. Many are simply forced to sell because margin calls leave them no choice.

Those liquidations push prices lower, triggering more stop losses, more forced selling, and another round of margin calls.

The cycle repeats itself.

What looked like endless demand on the way up becomes endless supply on the way down.

That’s why I believe the recent weakness across AI, semiconductor, and memory stocks has far less to do with AI itself than with the unwinding of one of the largest leveraged trades in the world.

What concerns me even more is that this isn’t simply an American story.

The AI boom became one of the most crowded global trades I’ve seen in years.

Investors piled into semiconductor and memory companies across the U.S., Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.

The same stocks became dominant holdings inside ETFs around the world, and leveraged products multiplied the exposure even further.

Now those same connections are working in reverse — with weakness in one market creating selling pressure in another.

Selling in Korea spills into Taiwan, and Taiwan influences semiconductor stocks in the U.S.

Those declines pressure sector ETFs, which then feed into broader index funds because technology has become such a large percentage of portfolios like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq.

Many investors believe they’re diversified because they own the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: SPY) or the Invesco QQQ Trust (Nasdaq: QQQ).

I’m not convinced.

When one sector grows this large, diversification quietly becomes concentration.

The semiconductor sector recently reached one of its highest weightings ever inside major indexes.

That means when semiconductor stocks begin unwinding together, the selling doesn’t remain isolated.

It spreads through ETFs that own many of the same companies, creating a feedback loop that can carry weakness from one market to another.

That’s why I think the market has become far more fragile than most investors realize.

Weakness also doesn’t stay isolated in these markets.

They have become mechanically connected through common holdings, leveraged ETFs, and investor positioning.

Selling creates more selling, and lower prices trigger additional liquidations.

Those liquidations create even lower prices, allowing the cycle to feed on itself until enough leverage has finally been forced out of the system.

That’s the part of today’s market I believe many investors are overlooking.

While most are focused on earnings, I’m focused on market structure.

None of this changes my long-term view of AI.

In fact, I’m probably more optimistic about the future AI than I’ve ever been.

But I am questioning whether today’s most popular AI stocks will ultimately become tomorrow’s biggest investment winners.

History suggests they probably won’t.

Think back to the internet.

In the late 1990s, investors believed networking companies, fiber-optic manufacturers, and internet portals were the safest, most obvious way to profit from the internet revolution.

They were treated exactly the way many semiconductor companies are being treated today — as can’t-miss, one-way investments.

History had other plans as many of those companies disappeared.

Others survived but never justified the prices investors paid during the mania.

Even the greatest success stories weren’t easy investments.

Amazon ultimately became one of the greatest businesses ever created, but shareholders first had to endure a decline of roughly 90% before the company began the climb that made it legendary.

And here’s something many investors forget: Google didn’t go public until 2004, and Meta didn’t arrive until 2012.

Many of the biggest winners of the internet age didn’t even exist when investors believed the opportunity had already passed them by.

That’s one of the most important lessons investing has taught me — that the early opportunity is rarely the best opportunity.

I expect AI to follow a similar path.

Perhaps OpenAI or Anthropic could become the Googles of AI . . .

But they could just as easily end up like Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, Infoseek, and countless other companies that once appeared destined to dominate the internet before history moved in a completely different direction.

The truth is, nobody really knows.

That’s why I’m taking a different approach.

Instead of looking at who’s building AI, I’m asking where AI will ultimately create the greatest economic value.

That way of thinking has led me toward several investment themes that I believe offer much more attractive long-term opportunities than chasing expensive semiconductor stocks.

One of those themes is what I call AI implementers.

These are businesses using AI to become dramatically better at what they already do — or in the business of helping other companies efficiently implement the rapidly evolving tech.

They’re laser-focused on applying AI for real-world operations, to reduce costs, win new business, and expand profitability.

One area that particularly excites me is customer service.

Most investors assume AI will eventually replace these companies, but my research suggests exactly the opposite.

AI is allowing many customer service companies to solve problems faster, improve productivity, reduce costs, and deliver better outcomes for clients.

As a result, many are winning larger contracts and strengthening their competitive position.

In other words, AI isn’t replacing them but rather making them more valuable.

Another theme I’m even more bullish about is utilities and energy infrastructure.

I’ve been telling our members that the safest AI investment today may also be the slowest one.

Every AI model, every data center, every inference engine, and every new application ultimately depends on one electricity. Without power, there is no AI revolution.

Even conservative estimates suggest we’ll need to add an amount of electricity roughly equivalent to what the entire state of Texas generates today just to meet AI demand.

More aggressive estimates require adding something closer to the combined electrical output of Texas and Florida.

That’s an extraordinary amount of infrastructure.

Sure, new technologies eventually solve that challenge, and regulations could change.

But those changes won’t happen overnight.

I believe that for years to come, AI’s expansion will largely depend on the companies that already own the transmission lines, substations, generation assets, and regulated utility infrastructure that powers our electrical grid.

They’re not exciting or dominating financial headlines.

Many still trade like slow-growing, dividend-paying utilities.

That’s exactly why I find them so compelling.

They may decline if we experience a broader market correction, but I’ve never lived through a genuine market panic that didn’t temporarily pull down almost everything.

The difference is that these businesses aren’t trading at bubble valuations and they aren’t crowded trades fueled by speculation and leverage.

Many generate stable cash flow while paying investors meaningful dividends.

That gives them a very different risk profile than many of today’s overvalued AI favorites.

As the next chapter of AI unfolds, I believe these hidden enablers and implementers will become some of its biggest beneficiaries because they’re providing something every AI company will need for the next decade.

That’s how we’re approaching AI at Mampilly Research.

By avoiding the obvious plays and uncovering overlooked opportunities history suggests the crowd hasn’t discovered yet.

Market Psychology: The First-Mover Fallacy 📈

Why today’s leaders aren’t always tomorrow’s biggest winners.

One investing mistake Paul has seen repeat itself through every major technological revolution is the First-Mover Fallacy — the belief that the companies leading a new trend today will automatically become its biggest long-term winners.

It’s an easy assumption to make.

Our brains naturally like simple, linear stories. When we see one company racing ahead, it’s comforting to believe we’ve already identified the ultimate winner.

But innovation rarely unfolds in a straight line.

Instead, a new technology always emerges, and a handful of companies jump out to an early lead. Their revenues surge, investors pour in capital, and their stock prices soar.

Before long, many investors stop asking whether they’re still attractive investments and begin assuming their long-term dominance is almost inevitable.

History tells a different story.

Paul watched this pattern repeat throughout every major technological revolution.

During the internet boom, investors believed networking companies, internet portals, and fiber-optic businesses would become the biggest winners because they were building the infrastructure that made the internet possible.

Many became Wall Street favorites.

Yet some of the greatest investment successes of the internet era emerged years later, from companies that found entirely different ways to monetize the technology.

That’s an important distinction.

Markets often reward the pioneers. History often rewards the companies that perfect the business model.

First movers usually do the hardest work, educating customers, building the early infrastructure, and proving that demand exists.

But in doing so, they also create a roadmap that later competitors can study, improve upon, and sometimes execute even better.

The market has a habit of overestimating the first winners and underestimating the businesses that quietly benefit from the revolution a few years later.

That’s why we approach major technological shifts a little differently.

Instead of asking, “Who’s leading today?”

It’s helpful to investigate, “Where will the economic value ultimately end up?”

It’s a subtle shift in thinking, but it often leads to very different investments.

Most investors stop at the obvious answer like that AI needs semiconductors and chips.

But it’s worth asking:

👉 Who benefits after the chips?

👉 Who supplies the electricity and infrastructure to run AI?

👉 Who helps businesses successfully implement AI?

👉 Who becomes dramatically more productive because AI exists?

Those second-order questions often uncover opportunities that receive far less attention than the companies dominating today’s headlines.

A contrarian look at where I believe the next big opportunity is forming.

As an investor, I don’t buy stocks because I love them . . .

But because I think the market is wrong about them.

And right now, I believe the market is wrong about China.

Over the last few years, an extraordinary amount of money has flowed into the same corner of the market:

Artificial intelligence (AI), mega-cap tech, and the biggest winners of the last cycle.

Many of those companies may deserve the attention they’ve received for building remarkable businesses and generating tremendous returns for early investors.

But markets have a way of creating their own imbalance.

The more money that flows into one area, the more investors begin to ignore opportunities elsewhere.

That’s why I’ve been spending more time looking at China.

Investing is ultimately a game of expectations.

And for now, expectations for Chinese stocks remain incredibly low.

While much of the U.S. market continues trading at valuations that assume near-perfect execution, many Chinese companies are trading as if nothing will ever improve.

The contrast couldn’t be much sharper.

In the U.S., investors are still grappling with inflation, elevated valuations, and a market increasingly concentrated in a handful of stocks.

China faces a very different challenge as its economy has struggled with weaker consumer confidence, sluggish growth, and deflationary pressures.

The result has been years of disappointment for investors and a stock market that has been largely abandoned by global capital.

But this is often where market opportunities begin . . .

When expectations have fallen so low that even modest improvements can change the narrative.

That’s what I’m closely tracking today.

China’s central bank is maintaining a highly accommodative stance, keeping liquidity flowing through the financial system.

Over the last two years, policymakers have been steadily increasing efforts to stimulate economic activity and revive consumer spending.

Beijing has expanded subsidy programs for vehicles, appliances, electronics, and home renovations.

It also expanded credit support programs, introduced consumer lending initiatives, and rolled out incentives designed to encourage spending.

In many ways, this represents a broader strategic shift.

Consumer spending is becoming an increasingly important pillar of China’s long-term economic plans as the country works to rely less on property markets and exports and more on domestic demand.

Every initiative probably won’t succeed, but they also don’t need to.

Markets rarely require perfection — they tend to simply require reality to become better than investors expect.

Meanwhile, valuations remain compelling.

Many Chinese companies continue are trading at prices that look attractive both on an absolute basis and relative to other global markets.

By absolute, I mean relative to earnings, cash flow generation, balance sheet strength, and asset values.

By relative, I mean compared to markets like the U.S., where many companies continue to trade at historically elevated multiples.

That’s why I believe the bigger story developing here isn’t necessarily about economic growth but market rotation.

Capital doesn’t stay concentrated forever.

Every cycle eventually produces winners that become expensive and laggards that become ignored before the process reverses.

If investors begin reducing exposure to crowded trades and start searching for value elsewhere, I believe China could become one of the largest beneficiaries of that shift.

That’s one of the reasons we’ve recently been putting capital to work in select Chinese companies in our model portfolios at Mampilly Research.

One of those businesses sits at the center of a powerful consumer and e-commerce ecosystem.

Another operates one of China’s top digital media and advertising platforms — and could benefit significantly if consumer confidence and advertising spending continue recovering.

I won’t reveal the exact stock names here, but I can say that both represent exactly the type of setup that interests me today . . .

Thriving established businesses, substantial cash generation, low expectations, and valuations that leave room for positive surprises.

That’s the key.

Market Psychology: When Words Follow Price 📉

Why the best opportunities rarely feel obvious or comfortable.

After an asset falls for years, something interesting happens.

Aside from becoming pessimistic, investors begin building explanations for why the decline was inevitable all along.

What starts as a price trend eventually becomes a narrative, and before long, that narrative starts feeling like fact.

That’s because one of the most powerful psychological traps in investing is emotional reasoning — the tendency to assume that because we feel something strongly, it must therefore be true.

If we feel confident, we assume the opportunity is good. If we feel fearful, we assume the risk is high.

And if we feel uncomfortable buying something, we assume it must be a bad investment.

The problem is that markets often work exactly the opposite way.

When an asset has been falling for a long time, the emotional environment surrounding it changes dramatically.

The headlines get worse, analysts become more pessimistic, and social media fills with reasons why the asset is broken.

Investors who once loved it begin explaining why they’ll never touch it again.

Eventually, the negative sentiment becomes so widespread that it starts feeling like objective reality.

That’s when emotional reasoning takes over.

As Paul points out, words follow price.

Most investors assume stories drive markets, but in many cases, price moves first.

Then analysts, journalists, commentators, and investors create stories that try to justify what has already happened.

Those kinds of stories often appear when pessimism has become deeply embedded in investor psychology.

Recently, Paul shared the example above after seeing a headline declaring Bitcoin had been “dead money” for five years.

As he pointed out, these types of stories often emerge after long bear markets, when sentiment has become overwhelmingly negative and investors struggle to imagine a different outcome.

Social media has made this process even more visible.

In past cycles, investors might have seen negative narratives appear in newspapers or financial magazines.

Today, sentiment spreads instantly across X, Reddit, YouTube, podcasts, and countless online communities.

As prices fall, thousands of people begin repeating the same bearish arguments, reinforcing one another until pessimism feels undeniable.

The result is an echo chamber where declining prices create negative narratives, and negative narratives create even more pessimism.

Eventually, investors stop asking: “What is actually changing here?”

And start asking: “Why would anyone buy this?”

That’s an important shift because once investors can no longer imagine a bullish case, expectations may already be extremely low.

Near major bottoms, investors often stop evaluating opportunities altogether as conversation becomes focused entirely on what has gone wrong.

And investors become increasingly convinced that whatever has been falling will continue falling forever.

That’s why major bottoms are so psychologically difficult.

The things that normally give investors confidence to buy are nowhere to be found.

As Paul recently put it:

At the bottom it’s hard to make a case to buy because the thing that gives us the biggest confidence to buy — price and emotion — are telling you to do the opposite.

Of course, that doesn’t mean every unpopular investment is a good one.

But history shows that some of the market’s most attractive opportunities have emerged when pessimism became extreme and expectations were pushed too low.

Because some of the biggest opportunities emerge when emotions are sending one signal while valuations, fundamentals, and long-term trends may be suggesting another.

The biggest risk in today’s market may not be AI, interest rates, or the economy — it may be hiding inside portfolios that investors consider perfectly safe.

Paul: The Most Dangerous Buyer on Wall Street 🚨

A contrarian look at where the biggest risk is forming.

Every market cycle creates its own mythology — and eventually, millions of investors get trapped by it.

In the late 1990s, it was internet stocks, and in the mid-2000s, it was housing.

Today, it’s something far more subtle.

It’s a buyer.

One so large, consistent, and widely trusted that most investors don’t even recognize it as a risk.

And that’s exactly why I think it’s dangerous.

The buyer I’m referring to is the index fund.

More specifically, it's the trillions of dollars flowing into products like the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (SPY), the Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ), and countless retirement plans that automatically allocate money into them every month.

To be clear, index investing was one of the greatest financial innovations of the last 50 years.

When it emerged, it was a smart alternative to expensive active management.

It gave everyday investors broad diversification, low fees, and market exposure that was previously difficult to achieve.

But that was then.

Today, I think we’re dealing with something very different.

We’ve created a system where trillions of dollars flow automatically into the largest companies on Earth regardless of valuation, fundamentals, or price.

Every day, billions of dollars enter index products.

The fund doesn’t ask whether a company trades at 10 times earnings or 100 times earnings.

It also doesn’t ask whether growth is accelerating or slowing, or whether expectations have become impossible to meet.

It simply buys . . . and then it buys again the next day.

That’s not investing.

That’s a mechanism with a flaw, and the result is something I believe many investors are underestimating.

We’ve reached a point where some of the most popular index portfolios in the U.S. — including SPY and QQQ —are more concentrated than they were during the peak of the dot-com bubble.

That’s not an opinion. That’s math.

Today, roughly 40% of many major index portfolios sit in a relatively small group of technology and semiconductor companies.

At the height of the 2000 technology bubble, that concentration was closer to 25%.

The trade that millions of people believe is diversified is actually becoming increasingly dependent on the fortunes of a shrinking number of companies.

That creates a risk most investors never consider because concentration and valuation are two entirely different problems.

People can argue endlessly about whether AI leaders deserve their current valuations, which is subjective.

But concentration isn’t as it’s measurable.

And today it’s extreme.

Then there’s the issue of leverage.

Margin debt has climbed to record levels, and leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) assets have exploded over the past several years.

Whenever markets become convinced that certain assets can only go higher, leverage follows.

It always does.

The important distinction is that this isn’t 2008 because back then, the threat was inside the banking system.

Highly leveraged financial institutions owned opaque assets that nobody truly understood, and when one major institution failed, the entire system was threatened.

Today’s risk is different as the banks are stronger, the financial plumbing is healthier, and the vulnerability has moved to retirement accounts, 401(k)s, IRAs, pension funds, and brokerage accounts across America.

That’s where the concentration and automatic buying live.

And if the technology and semiconductor trade eventually unwinds, the impact won’t be confined to a handful of hedge funds.

Rather, it will be felt by millions of investors who believe they’re simply “owning the market.”

I understand this view isn’t popular.

Most investors remain overwhelmingly optimistic and many remain convinced that AI will justify every valuation.

Maybe they’re right.

Markets are ultimately voting machines before they become weighing machines.

But when I look around, I find myself in the company of investors who have earned the right to be cautious.

People like Warren Buffett, Howard Marks, and Michael Burry.

Investors who understand that risk is often highest when everyone believes it’s lowest.

That doesn’t mean I’m predicting an immediate collapse or that I’m abandoning innovation.

And it certainly doesn’t mean I’m bearish on technology itself.

I believe investors should stop confusing popularity with safety because the biggest risk in this market may be the assumption that the same stocks can absorb endless amounts of money forever.

History suggests otherwise, and I think it’s usually worth listening to.

For years, I’ve wanted the opportunity to own SpaceX.

As an investor, it’s hard not to admire what Elon Musk has built.

SpaceX has transformed an industry that many people assumed would remain stagnant for decades. The company has repeatedly achieved what experts said couldn’t be done.

And like many investors, I was excited by the idea that one day we’d finally be able to buy shares.

That day is almost here.

The company’s expected to start trading publicly this Friday (June 12) . . .

And I’m passing.

Not because I think SpaceX is a bad company.

Quite the opposite.

I think SpaceX may be one of the greatest businesses ever created.

But a crucial lesson I’ve learned over more than 30 years in the market is this:

A great business does not automatically make a great investment.

In fact, some of the worst investments in history started as the market’s favorite stories.

The problem isn’t the company — it’s the price.

SpaceX is expected to come public at a valuation between roughly $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion.

Against approximately $19.3 billion in trailing 12-month revenue, investors would be paying somewhere between 90 and 100 times sales.

Read that again.

Ninety times sales.

I’ve lived through the dot-com bubble and studied the Nifty Fifty era. I’ve seen investors lose their minds chasing “can’t miss” stories.

I can’t recall another IPO of this size arriving at these kinds of valuations.

To justify those prices, investors aren’t simply betting that SpaceX succeeds.

They’re betting on years of extraordinary execution, sustained hypergrowth, and even greater enthusiasm from future buyers willing to pay even more extreme multiples.

That’s speculation layered on top of speculation.

Could the stock still go higher?

Of course.

Markets can stay euphoric longer than many people expect.

But if your investment thesis depends on finding someone willing to pay 120 times sales after you paid 90 times sales, you’re no longer investing based on fundamentals.

You’re relying on what economists call the “greater fool theory.”

That’s not a game I have any interest in playing.

And SpaceX isn’t arriving alone.

Anthropic is preparing to come public with OpenAI expected to eventually follow.

Other AI-related companies are lining up behind them.

Ask yourself a simple question: Why are insiders choosing to sell now?

Because this is exactly when sellers emerge.

They sell when optimism is abundant . . . when expectations are sky-high . . and when investors become convinced that prices only move in one direction.

History shows that periods marked by blockbuster IPOs, extreme valuations, and widespread enthusiasm often occur closer to major market peaks than major bottoms.

I’m not arguing against artificial intelligence (AI) or space exploration.

I may ultimately own some of these businesses one day.

But investing isn’t about falling in love with stories.

It’s about discipline and understanding that even the best companies can become dangerous investments when expectations detach from reality.

Market Psychology: The Halo Effect ✨

Why great companies can still become dangerous investments.

One of the most powerful psychological forces in investing is something called the Halo Effect.

This is our tendency to let one positive characteristic shape how we view everything else.

In simple terms, when we admire a company, a founder, or a product, we naturally begin assuming the investment itself must also be attractive.

The stronger our admiration, the harder it can be to separate the business from the stock.

A company introduces an innovative product, a visionary CEO captures the public’s imagination, and a new technology begins reshaping the world.

Investors naturally get excited — and often, for good reason.

But gradually, the questions start to change.

Instead of asking: “Is this a good investment at this price?”

People begin asking: “How can I not own this?”

The Nifty Fifty in the 1970s were considered “one-decision stocks” that investors believed you could buy at any price.

Dot-com companies promised to reinvent the economy.

More recently, investors have fallen in love with disruptive technologies, charismatic founders, and revolutionary themes that genuinely changed the world . . .

But not always in ways that rewarded shareholders who bought at the height of enthusiasm.

That’s what makes this psychological trap so difficult to recognize.

The Halo Effect often starts with something real like a truly exceptional company, talented leader, and transformative innovation.

The mistake isn’t in admiring the greatness but in assuming it automatically translates into a great investment opportunity.

Even Elon Musk has built businesses that have reshaped entire industries.

But admiration for what someone has accomplished should never replace the discipline of evaluating what you’re actually paying for future returns.

Paul believes some of the best investors develop the ability to hold two ideas at the same time:

“This may be an extraordinary business.”

and

“That doesn’t necessarily make it an attractive investment today.”

Paul: Why Gold Miners Could Surprise Everyone ⛏️

A contrarian look at where the next big opportunity is forming.

One of the biggest mistakes investors make is assuming inflation works in neat little cycles.

They assume prices go up, the Federal Reserve raises rates, inflation cools, and everything returns to normal.

I don’t think that’s the world we’re living in anymore.

In fact, I believe we're entering a period where truly scarce assets become dramatically more valuable — and it’s part of the reason why I believe gold has a realistic path toward $10K an ounce and potentially even higher over the coming years.

I realize that may sound extreme.

But I don’t think most investors fully understand what’s happening in the global economy.

In my view, we’re witnessing the beginning of a much larger shift driven by persistent inflation, rising government debt, geopolitical instability, and the simple fact that governments can print currency, but they can’t print gold.

That’s why I’ve spent so much time over the last couple of years talking about commodities, energy, gold, silver, and Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD).

Not because they’re trendy but because they’re finite.

Lately, I’ve seen plenty of headlines suggesting inflation is under control.

But when I look closer, I see something different.

April’s Producer Price Index (PPI) jumped roughly 1.4% for the month alone. That’s an annualized pace approaching 17%.

Meanwhile, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) — the Fed’s preferred inflation measure — rose roughly 0.4% for the month, running near a 4.8% annualized pace.

And here’s the part that everyone should take note of: Services account for roughly two-thirds of these inflation measures.

Oil only carries a relatively small weighting. In other words, this isn’t simply an energy story.

Inflationary pressure is becoming embedded throughout the broader economy.

That’s exactly why I think many investors are underestimating what’s ahead.

At the same time, the geopolitical backdrop continues moving in the direction of ongoing wars, rising government deficits, and massive fiscal spending.

Historically, those conditions almost always lead to one thing: More money creation.

We don’t have to agree with the politics behind it to recognize how the financial system tends to respond.

When governments spend aggressively and deficits expand, currencies gradually lose purchasing power.

And when that happens, investors start looking for assets that governments cannot print.

Gold has filled that role for thousands of years, and BTC may increasingly fill that role for a new generation.

One of the strongest confirmations of this thesis isn’t coming from Wall Street.

It’s coming from central banks who have been steadily increasing their gold reserves, pushing allocations to levels not seen in decades.

Meanwhile, individual investors are beginning to follow.

To me, that’s not a coincidence. It’s preparation.

They’re positioning for a world where preserving purchasing power becomes just as important as generating returns.

And in my view, that trend has much further to run.

In fact, this isn’t simply a theory I’ve been talking about. It’s a theme we’ve been actively investing in at Mampilly Research.

Before gold started dominating headlines again, we began building exposure to precious and industrial metals because I believed the world was moving toward a period where scarcity would matter more than abundance.

That early positioning has already produced some remarkable results in our portfolios, and I believe we’re still in the early stages of the larger move.

As of today, here are a few of our top open gains in precious metals miners, with several positions already up more than 100% :

What’s especially interesting is that I don’t think the real opportunity has arrived yet.

Many gold mining stocks still haven’t fully reflected the move in gold itself and look extremely attractive given where I think the metal’s price is ultimately headed.

Many of the world’s mature miners have production costs somewhere around $1,500 to $1,700 per ounce.

With gold trading far above those levels, profit margins have expanded dramatically.

If my longer-term outlook proves correct — and I continue to believe gold can move toward $10K per ounce — the operating leverage embedded inside many miners could become extraordinary.

That’s why I’ve said repeatedly that I don’t think the real gold story is here yet.

In my view, gold moves first, then BTC follows.

And the companies that control scarce, finite assets could become some of the biggest winners of the next major market cycle.

I believe we’re witnessing the early stages of a much larger rotation away from financial assets built on optimism . . . and toward real assets built on scarcity.

That’s exactly where much of my attention remains today.

Market Psychology: Conviction or Attachment? 🤔

Last week, we talked about survivorship bias — our tendency to focus on the big winners while forgetting the countless companies and trades that quietly disappeared along the way.

This week, let’s look at another psychological habit that can be just as costly: the sunk cost fallacy.

The sunk cost fallacy is the tendency to keep committing time, money, or emotional energy to something simply because we’ve already invested so much into it.

In markets, it shows up more often than most investors realize.

You buy a stock and then spend hours researching the company. You follow every earnings report and news release. You even tell friends and family why you like it.

Then, over time, the situation begins to change.

Maybe growth starts slowing or the industry becomes more competitive. Perhaps the stock simply runs too far ahead of its fundamentals.

But instead of stepping back and asking, “Would I still buy this today?” many investors start thinking: “I’ve already put too much into this to walk away now.”

That’s where the trap begins.

The money you’ve already invested can’t be recovered — it’s history.

But psychologically, people often let those past decisions influence what they do next, even though the market doesn’t care what price they paid or how long they’ve owned the position.

Investors hold onto losing stocks because they’ve owned them for years.

They keep averaging down because they want to “get back to even.” Others refuse to rotate into stronger opportunities because they’ve become emotionally attached to proving their original thesis was right.

Ironically, some of the best investors in the world do exactly the opposite.

They understand that every position should continuously earn its place in the portfolio.

Markets evolve, leadership changes, and new opportunities emerge.

Successful investing often requires the willingness to say: “That was the right trade for that environment, but this is a different market now.”

Being bullish on a long-term trend doesn’t necessarily mean owning the same stock forever.

There’s a dangerous disconnect building in markets right now.

And if you’re reading this, you’re likely ahead of most investors who still underestimate just how serious this situation could become.

While the stock market continues acting like everything is perfectly fine, the bond market is waving a giant warning flag.

In my opinion, that matters far more than most people realize.

Over the decades, I’ve learned that when the bond market and stock market start telling completely different stories about the economy, you should pay very close attention.

Right now, they’re living on different planets.

The stock market is still pricing in lower inflation, lower rates, strong growth, and continued optimism around tech and earnings growth.

But the bond market is saying inflation is not under control.

It’s saying long-term interest rates are likely headed higher.

And it’s saying investors demanding long-term capital protection still require significantly higher yields to compensate for rising risks across the economy.

That’s why what’s happening in Treasury yields right now is so important.

Since the Federal Reserve first began cutting rates back in September 2024, the 30-year and 10-year Treasury yields have refused to cooperate with the Fed’s narrative.

Normally, when the Fed cuts rates, long-term bond yields tend to fall as well.

But this time?

The exact opposite has happened.

Both the 10-year and 30-year Treasury yields are still sitting above where they were when the Fed first started easing policy.

That’s a massive warning sign.

Because it tells us the bond market never truly believed inflation was defeated in the first place.

And now the situation may be getting worse.

Recently, the 30-year Treasury yield pushed toward 5% for the first time since 2007.

Even with yields sitting near the highest levels in nearly two decades, buyers were still hesitant.

Think about how unusual that is.

If investors truly believed inflation was collapsing and economic conditions were becoming safer, demand for long-term bonds should be surging at these yields.

Instead, the bond market continues demanding higher compensation.

To me, that signals growing concern around persistent inflation pressures — particularly from energy, services inflation, government deficits, and structurally higher costs moving through the economy.

This matters because long-term interest rates are not isolated to the bond market.

They impact almost everything:

Mortgage rates
Corporate borrowing costs
Commercial real estate
Insurance pricing
Pension funding
Consumer lending
Bank loans

And perhaps most importantly, long-term Treasury yields are widely used as the “risk-free rate” underpinning stock market valuations themselves.

Higher yields mathematically pressure asset prices.

That’s just financial gravity.

My late mentor Murray Stahl used to say, “Interest rates are to finance what gravity is to physics.”

You can ignore gravity for a while, but eventually it reasserts itself. And I believe markets are getting dangerously close to rediscovering that reality.

The setup today reminds me enormously of previous late-cycle periods where investors became overly comfortable with risk because asset prices had gone up for so long.

That psychology becomes incredibly dangerous near major turning points.

At market highs, nobody wants to leave the party. Why would they?

The music is still playing, gains are still compounding, and optimism feels endless.

Selling feels foolish while everyone else continues making money.

But history shows us that the people who successfully protect wealth over decades are rarely the investors who stay fully exposed all the way through the euphoric phase of a cycle.

They’re usually the investors willing to get more defensive before conditions visibly deteriorate.

Ultimately, one of these markets is wrong.

Either the stock market is right — and yields suddenly collapse lower as inflation disappears and growth accelerates, pushing the market higher . . .

Or the bond market is right — and the stock market is set to fall as it is severely underestimating the impact of rising rates, inflation pressures, and financial tightening.

I’m betting the bond market is sending the honest signal.

That’s how we’re approaching markets right now at Mampilly Research — positioning for a world of persistently higher inflation, structurally higher interest rates, and far more volatility than most investors currently expect.

In recent weeks, we’ve also aggressively reduced risk across several portfolios, locked in gains, and become far more selective with new capital deployment.

Are we potentially early?

Of course.

Because thoughtful risk management usually requires acting before the crowd becomes uncomfortable.

I’m perfectly comfortable leaving some upside on the table if it means protecting capital during periods where risks are rising rapidly beneath the surface.

At the same time, we continue focusing heavily on areas we believe can benefit from persistent inflation, higher rates, and structural scarcity trends.

This includes energy, pipelines, shipping, electricity infrastructure, precious metals, Japanese financials, and select hard-asset opportunities.

In my opinion, one of the biggest mistakes investors can make today is assuming the environment that powered the last bull run will continue indefinitely.

Markets and cycles change.

And when interest rates begin repricing higher across the economy, everything changes with them.

One of the easiest ways investors develop a distorted view of markets is through something called survivorship bias.

This is the tendency to focus almost entirely on the winners while forgetting how many others failed along the way.

In investing, this happens constantly.

People look back at the biggest success stories of the last decade and assume the outcome must have been obvious all along.

They remember Amazon, Apple, Nvidia, and Bitcoin.

But what investors often don’t see are the thousands of companies, trends, and speculative trades that quietly disappeared during the same period.

That’s survivorship bias.

The winners survive long enough to become visible, but the failures fade from memory.

And over time, that creates a very misleading picture of how markets actually work.

Because when investors only study the success stories, they naturally start underestimating risk.

They begin assuming: “This sector created massive winners before, so most companies tied to it should eventually succeed too.”

But historically, that’s rarely how major market cycles unfold.

During the dot-com boom, investors remember Amazon becoming one of the greatest businesses in history.

But far fewer remember the hundreds of internet companies that burned through enormous amounts of capital before collapsing completely.

The same thing happened during the crypto boom.

Today, people focus on the handful of projects and assets that survived and recovered strongly. Meanwhile, countless speculative coins, exchanges, and companies quietly disappeared along the way.

That’s what makes survivorship bias so psychologically dangerous.

It causes investors to study the exceptions while forgetting the broader reality underneath the surface.

And during powerful bull markets, this distortion becomes even stronger because success stories dominate headlines, social media, podcasts, financial television, and online discussions.

The failures receive far less attention.

Over time, investors begin confusing: “A few massive winners emerged from this trend” with “Most investments tied to this trend will probably work.”

That’s a very important difference.

Because even during revolutionary technological shifts, typically only a relatively small number of companies usually emerge as dominant long-term winners.

Meanwhile, enormous amounts of speculation, excess optimism, and overvalued businesses tend to form around the broader theme itself.

That’s one reason Paul and the team at Mampilly Research spend so much time being selective — not just about sectors and themes, but about the specific stocks within them.

We may be bullish on an overall trend like precious metals, energy, crypto, or commodities over the long run . . . but that doesn’t mean every company tied to those themes automatically becomes a great investment.

Or that if when one of them does, that it stays that way during the whole cycle.

Far from it.

Within every major bull market, some companies emerge as dominant winners while others become overhyped, poorly managed, overvalued, or simply unable to execute.

Wall Street may be dangerously overestimating the AI boom and ignoring major warning signs.

Paul: AI Stocks Are Pricing In Perfection ⚠️

The market’s ignoring this massive warning sign.

One thing I’ve learned after nearly 40 years in markets is that at certain moments, investors stop focusing on reality, and start falling in love with narratives.

And right now, Wall Street has completely embraced what I call the AI Nirvana Narrative.

The belief is that AI growth will to accelerate so quickly, for so long, that it creates an almost perfect economic environment.

In this scenario, productivity surges, corporate earnings explode higher, inflation disappears — and deflation takes over.

And somehow, nearly every major AI-related company becomes enormously profitable at once.

In other words, the market is increasingly pricing AI as if it’s going to unfold smoothly, perfectly, and without interruption for years.

But when I look at the actual data underneath the surface, I see something very different.

In fact, many of the signals coming out of the economy are pointing in the exact opposite direction.

Take the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) inflation report.

PPI measures the inflation companies pass onto each other throughout the economy before those costs eventually reach consumers. In April alone, PPI rose 1.4% month over month, which annualizes to about 18%.

That isn’t deflation or even disinflation. That’s a major inflationary surge moving through the system.

And here’s what really stands out to me . . .

Roughly 68% of PPI is tied to services, not commodities or energy.

So, if AI is already such a powerful deflationary tool for businesses, why is services inflation still running this hot?

And why are costs still rising so aggressively across large parts of the economy?

To me, the answer is that the market has dramatically overestimated how quickly AI transforms the real economy.

Let me be clear, however, that I absolutely believe AI could become one of the most important technological innovations of our lifetime.

Long term, it may rival the internet, electricity, railroads, or the automobile in terms of impact.

But history also shows that world-changing innovations still create bubbles.

And bubbles happen when investors start confusing a great story with a great investment.

Those are two very different things.

At the wrong valuation, even the best company in the world can become a risky stock to own.

I’ve seen this happen over and over again throughout my career — during the dot-com bubble, the housing mania, crypto speculation, meme stocks . . .

And now, in my opinion, with AI, semiconductors, and mega-cap tech.

The enthusiasm becomes so intense that investors begin assuming nothing can go wrong.

Meanwhile, indexes like SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) and Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) have become extraordinarily concentrated in a small group of AI-related companies, leaving many investors far more exposed than they realize.

At the same time, the bond market continues signaling something very different from the optimism we’re hearing across financial media.

Long-term Treasury yields continue pushing higher instead of confirming this supposed AI-driven deflationary boom.

To me, that matters because eventually reality always catches up with narrative.

Does that mean the bubble ends tomorrow?

Not necessarily.

Bubbles can last longer than almost anyone expects.

But in my opinion, we are no longer early in this cycle.

We are likely moving into the late innings of one of the largest speculative AI manias markets have seen in decades.

And when these periods finally reverse, investors usually relearn the same lesson:

The party feels unstoppable while it’s happening, but very few people leave rich.

Market Psychology: When Success Hides Risk

One of the most dangerous psychological traps in investing is something called outcome bias.

This is the tendency to judge a decision purely by the result it produced, rather than by the quality of the process behind it.

In simple terms: If a trade makes money, investors assume it was smart. And if a trade loses money, they assume it was a mistake.

But markets don’t actually work that cleanly.

Sometimes terrible decisions make money for a while, and sometimes disciplined decisions lose money temporarily.

That distinction becomes incredibly important during speculative bull markets.

During the dot-com bubble, investors piled into internet stocks with no earnings, no business model, and sometimes barely any revenue at all.

Many of those stocks doubled, tripled, or went even higher for a period of time.

And because people were making money, investors assumed the process itself must be correct.

The same thing happened during the housing bubble and again during meme stocks and crypto speculation in 2021.

The longer risky behavior works, the more investors begin mistaking momentum for skill.

That’s outcome bias. Success starts validating behavior that may actually be becoming more dangerous underneath the surface.

We’re seeing signs of that dynamic again today.

AI and mega-cap tech stocks have produced extraordinary gains, and as prices continue moving higher, many investors are increasingly assuming the trade itself must therefore be low risk or fundamentally justified at almost any valuation.

But strong price performance alone doesn’t automatically eliminate risk.

In fact, history often shows the opposite.

Late in major bull markets, investors begin focusing almost entirely on the recent outcome thinking: “This stock keeps going higher” or “Everyone owning it is making money” and “The market clearly believes in the story.”

And gradually, fewer people stop to ask harder questions such as: “How much optimism is already priced in?” “How crowded is the positioning?” What happens if growth slows?

That’s the danger because markets can reward aggressive behavior for much longer than people expect, right up until conditions change.

And when they do, the reversal often catches investors completely off guard because the recent success made the risk feel invisible.

That’s one reason speculative cycles can become so dangerous psychologically. The market starts teaching investors the wrong lessons.

Instead of reinforcing discipline, patience, and risk management, it temporarily rewards concentration, momentum chasing, and increasingly emotional decision-making.

And for a while, that system worked well.

But over the last few years, we started seeing the cracks.

COVID was the first major wake-up call. Suddenly, countries realized they couldn’t even secure basic products without relying on overseas manufacturing hubs and fragile shipping routes.

Then came rising geopolitical tensions, energy shocks, wars, sanctions, and now this latest clash between China and Europe over Europe’s push to rebuild its own industrial base.

To me, this isn’t just another headline.

It’s a clear sign that globalization is breaking down one crisis at a time, and resource nationalism is replacing it.

What do I mean by resource nationalism?

Countries everywhere are starting to prioritize control over their own energy, metals, food supply chains, industrial production, and strategic materials.

Governments no longer want to depend on geopolitical rivals for the very resources that keep their economies functioning.

And I think most investors still don’t fully understand what likely comes next.

You see, once countries stop trusting global supply chains, everything changes.

Governments and corporations start thinking differently. Entire industries start reorganizing around security, resilience, and domestic production instead of just low costs.

That’s what we’re seeing right now with reindustrialization.

The U.S. wants more domestic manufacturing. Europe wants local EV supply chains.

And India is ramping up industrial capacity.

Countries everywhere are suddenly scrambling to secure energy, metals, agriculture, semiconductors, and critical resources from either domestic sources or “friendly” nations.

Because nobody wants to wake up one day and realize a geopolitical rival controls the materials their economy depends on.

That’s why I’ve been so focused on metals, energy, shipping, electricity, and hard assets at Mampilly Research.

Frankly, I think most investors are still looking in the wrong direction.

Everyone is obsessed with AI right now, and don’t get me wrong — AI is absolutely going to transform the world.

But markets are acting like this transformation happens overnight with no bottlenecks, no infrastructure constraints, and no resource shortages.

I think that’s fantasy.

AI runs on electricity, power grids, data centers, copper wiring, silver, steel, cooling systems, and massive industrial infrastructure.

You can’t build the future without enormous amounts of physical resources.

And that’s where I see some of the biggest opportunities forming right now.

While much of the market chases crowded software stocks and momentum-driven AI trades, we’ve been positioning around the real-world backbone needed to support this next era of growth.

In many ways, what’s happening reminds me of the rebuilding cycle after World War II.

Back then, Europe’s industrial base had been physically destroyed and needed rebuilding.

This time, the industrial base of the U.S. and Europe was hollowed out gradually over 30 years of globalization as companies outsourced manufacturing overseas.

Now the rebuilding process has started and it requires commodities. Lots of them.

That’s one reason we increased exposure to precious metals and scarce assets early.

Back in March 2025, we began positioning aggressively into gold and silver-related opportunities because we believed the world was heading toward a period where hard assets, strategic resources, and industrial capacity would become increasingly valuable again.

Since then, gold prices have surged sharply higher, helping drive major moves across many gold and silver mining companies along with it.

So far, that thesis has played out extremely well.

Several precious metals positions across our portfolios are already sitting on 120%+ open gains because we positioned early before this trend became obvious to the broader market.

And personally, I don’t think this move is quite over.

The market is slowly waking up to the reality that the era of cheap, frictionless globalization is fading — and a new era built around scarcity, security, and reindustrialization is taking its place.

That’s the big picture I’m focused on right now.

In simple terms, the easier something is to see, hear about, or remember, the more important we naturally assume it must be.

Investors begin focusing on the stocks constantly discussed on financial TV, the sectors dominating social media, and the trades everyone seems to be talking about online, at work, or around the dinner table.

The more often people hear about something, the more familiar it feels.

And the more familiar it feels, the safer and more compelling it often appears.

Paul: Why Bitcoin Is Becoming Necessary ⚡

A contrarian look at the monetary shift most investors still don’t see coming.

Most still think Bitcoin USD (BTC-USD) is a speculative asset.

I think that’s the mistake.

What very few investors understand is that BTC may ultimately become something much bigger . . .

A new foundation for how value itself gets stored across the global financial system.

And ironically, the forces accelerating that shift are not coming from Silicon Valley or crypto enthusiasts.

They’re coming from geopolitics.

Right now, we’re watching the global trade bending, fracturing, and slowly reorganizing in real time.

The Iran conflict is exposing cracks that were already forming beneath the surface of the global monetary system.

For decades, the U.S. dollar has dominated international trade because the world trusted it as the primary reserve currency. And to be clear, the dollar is still dominant today.

But dominance is not the same thing as permanence.

What caught my attention recently was Iran successfully selling oil in Chinese yuan during the conflict.

On the surface, people dismiss that as insignificant because the volumes remain relatively small.

I think that view misses the bigger point entirely.

The important part isn’t whether the yuan replaces the dollar. I don’t think it will.

What matters is that countries are now actively experimenting with alternatives.

I think that can change everything.

Because while nations may transact in yuan temporarily, very few governments, corporations, or investors truly want to store long-term wealth in Chinese currency long term.

And increasingly, they may not fully trust storing all of it in dollars either.

That’s where BTC enters the scene.

For the first time in modern history, there is now a globally transferable monetary asset tied directly to scarcity and energy itself.

That matters more than most people realize.

In hindsight, I believe future generations will look back and find it bizarre that people once accepted money disconnected from scarcity altogether.

BTC changes that equation as its entire system is built around finite supply, energy expenditure, and mathematical certainty.

And adoption is quietly accelerating much faster than most understand.

According to a recent Bitwise/VettaFi survey, 32% of U.S. financial advisors now allocate BTC to client portfolios.

Really think about that for a moment.

If advisors were to move just 2% of their roughly $145 trillion in assets under management into BTC, the implied demand would equal more than 42 million BTC.

But there are only about 20 million coins in total currently circulating.

That supply imbalance is extraordinary.

And it tells me the market still has not fully grasped what happens when institutional capital collides with a truly scarce asset.

That’s why I believe what’s happening in BTC right now is much larger than another crypto rally.

The recent strength in BTC may actually be signaling the early stages of a global monetary transition already beginning beneath the surface.

This isn’t something that I think will happen overnight or all at once but gradually . . .

Through feedback loops created by war, trade fragmentation, rising distrust between nations, and weakening confidence in existing monetary structures.

That’s the lens I’m using to analyze crypto right now: As a potential long-term restructuring of how global value moves and gets stored.

And if that thesis continues playing out, I believe most investors are still drastically under-positioned.

One of the most powerful psychological forces in investing is something called normalcy bias — the tendency to assume the future will mostly look like the past.

It’s why major shifts are often dismissed early.

People assume existing systems will continue functioning the way they always have because that’s what feels familiar and stable.

And the longer something has been true, the harder it becomes to imagine it changing.

Paul has watched this pattern repeat throughout market cycles.

For example, most investors initially dismissed the internet as a niche technology.

They underestimated smartphones and ignored streaming.

And many wrote off BTC for years because it didn’t fit within the traditional financial system they already understood.

That same psychology may be showing up again today.

For decades, the U.S. dollar has dominated global trade and reserve markets. Because of that, many investors simply assume the current monetary system will remain largely unchanged indefinitely.

But markets and financial systems don’t stay static forever.

Paul: A Global Squeeze = Big Opportunity 💰

A contrarian look at where the next big opportunity is forming.

Most investors still think of shipping as a slow and sleepy “old economy” industry.

That’s exactly why they’re missing what’s happening right now.

Because what I’m seeing is a structural shift unfolding in real time driven by mounting pressure inside the global supply chain.

And in my experience, these are the kinds of setups that create the most powerful, under-the-radar bull markets.

At the center of it all is a simple reality: The world doesn’t have enough shipping capacity for what’s coming next.

And that gap is quietly widening.

Geopolitical friction around key chokepoints — especially the Strait of Hormuz — is already forcing longer, less efficient routes.

What used to take three to four weeks is now stretching into five to eight weeks.

That may sound incremental, but across a global system, it’s massive.

Longer routes don’t just delay shipments but also effectively remove supply, because each vessel is tied up for longer.

Multiply that across thousands of ships, and capacity tightens fast.

Now look at where we are today . . .

Global fleet utilization is already near maximum, with just 0.6% to 0.7% of the world’s container ships sitting idle. In other words, nearly every available vessel is already in use.

At the same time, demand continues to build for energy as well as products that rely on oil and natural gas as feedstocks, including plastics, fertilizers, and pharmaceuticals.

That’s where shortages can begin to surface in places most investors aren’t even paying attention to yet.

And while demand is rising, supply simply can’t respond.

Ships take years to build.

Even with an expanding order book, global capacity is only expected to grow by about 7% to 9% annually. This is nowhere near fast enough if demand continues climbing and routes stay extended.

The result is already showing up in pricing.

Charter rates remain firm, with certain segments seeing 10% to 20% increases in 2025, and overall pricing still hovering near the higher end of historical ranges.

That’s not random. That’s the early stage of a supply-driven bull market.

It’s also why we didn’t wait.

Across Mampilly Research, we began building exposure to shipping last year and are still adding positions as opportunities arise.

I saw a headline this week celebrating the Nasdaq’s massive run over the past few years, describing it as “fun.”

And that word stuck with me because when markets start to feel like entertainment, something important has already shifted beneath the surface.

This is when people stop thinking about risk and stop asking what something is truly worth.

Instead, they focus almost entirely on price and on what might move next, how fast it might go, and how much they can make if they catch it in time.

That shift from investing to speculation is subtle, but it changes everything.

What we’re seeing today is the result of years of conditioning.

Since 2020, a massive wave of new participants has entered the market, many of them experiencing a stretch where buying strength and holding through dips consistently paid off.

Over time, that behavior didn’t just work, it became reinforced. And now, for many, it feels like the default way markets operate.

But markets don’t reward the same behavior forever. They adapt, and eventually they challenge the very habits they helped create.

I’m also seeing risk that’s quietly building in areas that aren’t getting nearly enough focus.

We’re seeing tightening conditions in physical energy markets, ongoing geopolitical tensions, and clear signs of strain beneath the surface.

Yet major indexes continue to act as if none of it carries meaningful consequences.

That kind of disconnect rarely resolves slowly. More often, it corrects quickly, and usually at a moment when the fewest people are prepared for it.

That’s why at ATG Digital, we’re now tightening risk, taking profits sooner, and raising cash where it makes sense.

We’re also being far more selective about where we’re putting capital to work.

Could markets keep going higher? Sure.

But in my experience, the most dangerous environments are the ones that feel the easiest, when everything looks good on the surface, and nobody feels urgency to protect themselves.
