45 and single - trad folk hits the charts, December 1975

As a lover and player of traditional folk music, and, equally, a lover of 60s and 70s rock and pop music, I have long been fascinated by those rarest of chart-climbing beasts: folk songs that became pop hits. There aren’t many of them, and although I was tempted to include album-only tracks such as Led Zeppelin’s Gallows Pole and Traffic’s John Barleycorn (both from 1970), for this article I’ve stuck with folk songs that were released as singles and – gasp – became hits. The numbers in brackets refer to the Roud Index of folk songs, a colossal catalogue of English-language traditional songs.

The House of the Rising Sun, 1964

The House of the Rising Sun (Roud 6393), released by Newcastle band The Animals in 1964, is a premier example of the transformation of the base metal of folk song into pop gold. The song is about sexually transmitted diseases in New Orleans, although this theme was sufficiently hidden to avoid instant global bans. The lyrics, as growled by Eric Burdon, are distinctly American, but the song’s roots are in English broadside ballads, with thematic links to the Unfortunate Rake (Roud 2) family of VD-blighted songs, the earliest of which appeared in the late eighteenth century.

The earliest known printed lyrics to The House of the Rising Sun date from 1925 in an American magazine column by Robert Winslow Gordon. The first commercial recording was made in 1933 by Appalachian musicians Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster, under the title Rising Sun Blues. Folklorist Alan Lomax made a field recording of the song in 1937, sung by Georgia Turner, a sixteen-year-old miner’s daughter from Kentucky.

The Animals based their interpretation of the song on Bob Dylan’s version from his eponymous 1962 debut album. Dylan, in turn, had learned it from Dave Van Ronk on the Greenwich Village folk scene. However, Animals singer Eric Burdon maintained in an interview that he first heard the song sung by Johnny Handle (who later formed Newcastle folk band The High Level Ranters).

As with all songs that make the crossover from the folk tradition to the charts, there is a pop hook. The Animals’ Hilton Valentine played Dylan’s acoustic guitar chords as an arpeggio on jangling electric, and combined with Alan Price's song-defining organ and Burdon’s passionate, very non-folk vocals, the old song was transformed into a global rock anthem. It reached number one in the UK charts on 15 July 1964 but was knocked off the top spot by The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night the following week.

Sloop John B, 1966

Sloop John B (Roud 15634) was originally published as The John B. Sails. It’s a traditional Bahamian folk song from Nassau, New Providence. It describes a chaotic, alcohol-fuelled journey, inspired by a 19th-century vessel named after Captain John Bethel, which eventually wrecked at Governor’s Harbor in Central Eleuthera, Bahamas. The song is a sea shanty or work song.

A sheet music arrangement of the piece appeared in the US in 1903, and Richard Le Gallienne published a text transcription in 1916 after hearing the song during his travels. Carl Sandburg included it in his 1927 collection, The American Songbag. By that point, the song had become an unofficial national anthem in Nassau, where physical relics of the original John B. ship were incorporated into a coastal watchtower. Folksong archivist Alan Lomax made a field recording of the song in the Bahamas in 1935.

The song became popular during the folk revival. US folk group The Weavers, headed by Pete Seeger, recorded a version in 1950, and Bahamian artist Blind Blake Higgs released a version in 1952. The Kingston Trio recorded it in 1958 under the title “The Wreck of the John B.”, and it was this version that inspired Al Jardine to bring the song into the Beach Boys’ repertoire. Brian Wilson adapted the lyrics and added the 60s’ pop-fairy dust and signature band harmonies to make it one of many standout tracks on the 1966 album Pet Sounds.

The single reached number 2 in the UK charts, and peaked at number 3 in the USA.

Hey Joe, 1967

Jimi Hendrix’s magnificent entry into the charts, 1967’s Hey Joe, is an interloper in this article, really, as it isn’t a genuine folk song – or, at least, not directly. It was written and copyrighted in 1962 by American singer-songwriter Billy Roberts. But a myth arose that the track was an authentic piece of traditional Americana, an impression spread by American folk singer Tim Rose, who recorded it in 1966, claiming it was a traditional song. That’s not entirely false, as Roberts clearly drew inspiration from folk themes, including southern American murder ballads such as Little Sadie (Roud 780) and Delia (Roud 3264)1, both of which date from the turn of the 20th century. These are, in turn, thematically related (i.e., men killing women) to the British folk song Pretty Polly (Roud 21). Billy Roberts was also inspired by a 1955 song written by his girlfriend Niela Miller, Baby, Please Don’t Go to Town, which used a nearly identical chord progression and a similar theme of sexual jealousy.

Before Hendrix recorded his definitive version in late 1966, the song had already become a staple for Los Angeles garage bands, including The Leaves, Love, and The Byrds. Hendrix, however, based his version on the slower tempo established by Tim Rose, who Hendrix had heard performing in Greenwich Village. Jimi added the all-important hook – the guitar lick after “where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?” The Jimi Hendrix Experience peaked at number six in the UK charts with Hey Joe for two consecutive weeks, beginning 8 February 1967.

Scarborough Fair, 1968

Scarborough Fair (Roud 12), as sung by Simon and Garfunkel in 1969, is the oldest of the seven songs discussed here. It’s an English ballad from the seventeenth century, drawing from an older Scottish ballad, The Elfin Knight. The song is a fragment, as it retains the riddles from the source material, but none of the plot. It’s a dialogue between former lovers who set each other a series of impossible tasks (just one protagonist sets the task in the Simon and Garfunkel version), such as making a shirt without any seams or ploughing with a lamb’s horn. The refrain, listing the herbs parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, has been interpreted by scholars in all sorts of symbolic ways; although some versions have alternative lines such as “every rose grows merry in time”, so there is some mishearing going on somewhere (and that’s one of the salient features of folk music in all its wonderful variations).

Scarborough Fair was collected widely across Yorkshire and other parts of England during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Paul Simon lifted the melody and arrangement directly from the English folk singer Martin Carthy in 1965 during the American musician’s stint on the British folk club circuit. Simon and Garfunkel subsequently recorded it for their 1966 album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, interweaving it with the anti-war poem Canticle, creating a signature track of the folk-rock era.

The fact that the guitar line was based very closely on what was, in reality, a composition by Martin Carthy, led to accusations of plagiarism from many in the British folk world, but Carthy himself has long since buried the hatchet and lauds Simon’s version of Scarborough Fair as the masterpiece it is (in spite of the mispronunciation of “Scarborough” throughout the song).

It was released as a single in the United States and various other countries in February 1968 following its inclusion on the soundtrack for the film The Graduate, and it reached number 11 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was not released as a single in the UK, surprisingly, but it was the opening track of the album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, which peaked at number 13 on the UK Albums Chart in the summer of 1968.

Whiskey in the Jar, 1972

Whiskey in the Jar (Roud 138) is a traditional Irish ballad that tells the tale of a highwayman who robs an army captain, only to be betrayed by his lover, or wife, often named Jenny or Ellen. The song originated in the eighteenth century, part of a genre of broadside ballads celebrating outlaws and functioning as the tabloid shock-horror stories of their day. It was disseminated via printed broadsides and the oral tradition throughout the nineteenth century in Ireland and England and crossed the Atlantic with emigrants working in North American logging and mining camps.

Irish folk group The Dubliners included a version of Whiskey in the Jar on their 1967 album More of the Hard Stuff, and as a single in 1968 (which reached no. 3 on the USA Billboard charts). This was Thin Lizzy’s source. Singer and bassist Phil Lynott spontaneously busked the track during a rehearsal in 1972, and guitarist Eric Bell added the signature guitar hook. The nonsense “Whack for the daddy-o” chorus was retained, but the 4/4 rhythm of the original was given a mid-tempo rock groove that makes it radically different to the folky version. The song entered the UK top ten in 1972, peaking at number six for a single week on 10 February 1973.

All Around My Hat, 1975

All Around My Hat (Roud 22518) was a hit for British folk-rock pioneers Steeleye Span in 1975. The song they recorded is a compilation of two separate traditional pieces: the verses come from the nineteenth-century lament Farewell He (Roud 803), while the “All around my hat I will wear the green willow” chorus is from an 1830s cockney costermonger ballad by London composers J. Ansell and John Valentine. Popularised on the Music Hall stage by comic actor Mr Jack Reeve, the song was a transatlantic hit, prompting publishers such as Oliver Ditson in Boston to print the sheet music. However, the themes and melody of the chorus predate Ansell and Valentine’s version. Street broadsides exist from the 1820s, possibly parodying the eighteenth-century traditional folk song The Green Willow aka The Nobleman’s Wedding (Roud 567).

The earliest audio recording of the verse section of the song is the 1953 Fare Ye Well, Cold Winter by traditional singer Cecilia Costello, performed for the BBC. The costermonger chorus part of the song was first recorded in 1959 by American singer John Langstaff as I Will Wear the Green Willow. Peter Bellamy recorded a version of this latter song on his second solo album, Fair England’s Shore, in 1969. This is the recording that gave Steeleye Span their chorus.

The final arrangement was cooked up by the band with producer Mike Batt, where the hook is not a guitar lick, but a five-part vocal harmony on the chorus, and a repeated instrumental section featuring fiddle and mandolin by Peter Knight. This was the first, and so far the only traditional English folk song to hit the high end of the charts. Steeleye Span held the number five position in the UK charts for three consecutive weeks, beginning 14 December 1975.

The motif of wearing a green willow sprig or garland as a symbol of mourning for an unfaithful or absent lover appears in Shakespeare. In Act 4, Scene 3 of Othello, Desdemona, sensing her impending doom, sings “sing all a green willow must be my garland”, which is from the ballad The Willow Song, first printed in 1583. In Much Ado About Nothing, Act 2, Scene 1, Benedick offers to go to a willow tree to fetch a garland, noting it is for someone who has been forsaken. There are hints of the imagery in Act 4, Scene 7 of Hamlet, too, where Gertrude says, “There is a willow grows aslant a brook”, where Ophelia, driven mad with sorrow, is making garlands.

Buffalo Gals, 1983

Buffalo Gals (Roud 13548) became an unlikely hit in 1982 when hip-hop innovator and former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren combined it with emerging New York scratch DJ techniques for his album Duck Rock. The song comes from the American minstrel repertoire, a blackface tradition that represents the first of many times white musicians have appropriated Black music and made it wildly popular. Indeed, the popularity and ubiquity of blackface, or “black and white minstrel” music lasted almost 150 years, and The Black and White Minstrel Show was still primetime TV viewing when I was a kid. It’s an uncomfortable reality that there’s no point turning away from. And ‘uncomfortable’ was McLaren’s middle name.

Buffalo Gals was first published in New York in 1844 under the title Lubly Fan, by John Hodges, a blackface minstrel who worked under the stage name Cool White. The lyrics reference the dancing girls in the bars and brothels of Buffalo’s Canal District, the western terminus of the Erie Canal. As minstrel troupes travelled across the United States, they routinely altered the lyrics to please local audiences, singing the song as Pittsburgh Gals, Charleston Gals, Alabama Girls, Boston Gals, etc. What little melody there is in the song is very similar to an old English singing game called Pray, Pretty Miss; but, given the primitive nature of the beast, that may just be a coincidence.

Buffalo Gals is a song for chanting and shouting more than singing, making it perfect for McLaren’s always nefarious purposes, not to mention his limited singing skills. He discovered the tune while immersing himself in American roots music and urban street cultures, realising that the rhythmic nineteenth-century ‘holler’ perfectly fitted the backdrop of scratch and hip-hop emerging in the early 1980s. McClaren’s Buffalo Gals held the UK number nine position for two consecutive weeks, beginning 15 January 1983.

Given that pop and rock music endlessly recycle chord sequences, lines of melody, riffs, and lyrical themes, the biggest surprise is that there haven’t been more UK hit songs lifted from the British and American-via-British folk traditions. Things are very different in Ireland and Scotland, where folk music has not drifted so far from the mainstream and, indeed, plays its part in national culture. Which is exactly what folk music should do.

As a postscript, I must also mention the instrumental hit Jig-a-Jig by East of Eden, which peaked at No. 7 in the UK in early 1971. The track is a set of three traditional Irish reels (not jigs at all): The Ashplant Reel, Drowsy Maggie and Jenny’s Chickens. As with Traffic’s 1970 John Barleycorn Must Die, Jig-a-Jig was also the title of an album; and like Traffic’s John Barleycorn, it was a one-off recording of traditional material by a band who otherwise played prog- and jazz-rock.

And that’s another thing about the hits discussed in this article – with the exception of Steeleye Span, the songs were one-offs, novelties, for the artists involved. (The other big folk-band hit of the 70s was Fiddlers Dram’s Day Trip To Bangor in 1979 (peaking at number 3 in January 1980), but that one worked the other way round, being a non-traditional song from a band whose material was predominantly traditional.)

The English traditional folk music allergy doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. Thank goodness I’m immune.

The previous post in this series looked at the foundational legend of Albina and her 32 sisters; while in the last Geoffrey of Monmouth-derived cliffhanger, King Brutus had founded New Troy and then run out of plot. Such is the fate of triumphant Trojan monarchs facing the whims of twelfth-century pseudo-historians. But the plot goes up several gears when the next generation gets to the front of the stage, led by Brutus’ eldest son and heir, Locrinus.

The legend of Locrinus (aka Locrine) originates in the twelfth-century Latin Historia regum Britanniae, written by Geoffrey of Monmouth. He didn’t have any antecedents this time, just a couple of names and a lot of ambition. His baton was picked up by the Norman writer Wace and his English impersonator, Layamon. The whole thing was then reimagined in a seventeenth-century play.

In Geoffrey’s original account, Brutus divides the island between his three sons. Locrinus, the eldest, receives the central region (modern England), which is named Loegria after him (presumably by people who were either hard of hearing or couldn’t spell); Kamber claims and names Cambria (Wales); and Albanactus founds the confusingly named Albania (Scotland).

Geoffrey doesn’t hang around to discuss economic policy and religious reform. Like the plot twists of an impatient movie, peace is shattered when Humber, the king of the Huns, invades Albania and kills Albanactus. Locrinus and Kamber, boosted by the army of Corineus of Cornwall, seek vengeance. They attack the invaders, who have sailed down the east coast of Loegria, driving Humber into the River Abus, where he drowns. After this event, the river is called the Humber.

Among the spoils captured from the Hunnish ships is Estrildis, daughter of the King of Allemaine. Locrinus falls in love with her and vows to marry her. This passion is complicated by his prior betrothal to the warlike Gwendolen, daughter of the equally warlike Corineus. The latter threatens civil war if the betrothal is broken, confronting Locrinus and symbolically shattering a huge rock with his battle axe. The suitably intimidated Locrinus submits and marries Gwendolen.

However, because true love knows no season and all that, Locrinus builds a secret, torchlit, stone-walled underground chamber beneath New Troy (London). He declares himself a religious fanatic and, for seven years, pretends to attend secret rituals while, in reality, visiting Estrildis. Nature takes its course, and Estrildis gives birth to a daughter, Habren (Averne, Avren, Sabren, Sabrina), while Gwendolen bears a son, Maddan.

The death of Corineus is the moment Locrinus has been waiting for, and with unseemly haste, he divorces Gwendolen and announces that Estrildis is the new queen. Terminally miffed, Gwendolen gathers the Cornish army and faces Locrinus in battle near the River Stour. The king is either killed by an arrow, falls on his sword in the face of defeat, or dies in prison, depending on your source of choice. Gwendolen takes the throne and condemns Estrildis and Habren to death in the river that separates Cornwall from Cambria, proclaiming that it will forever bear the name of the sacrificial child. Henceforth, the river was called Hafren in Welsh and Sabrina in Latin, eventually morphing into Severn.

1. C) Richard III. Richard was the last English king to die in battle, and the last of the Plantagenets. His death ushered in the Tudor dynasty led by the victor of the battlefield, Henry VII. The previous Henry, number 6, (reigned 1422 to 1461 and again 1470 to 1471), was the son of Henry V, and his weak rule lay was a primary reason for the York vs Lancaster civil wars that rumbled through until Bosworth. Edward IV was hapless Henry’s Yorkist rival (reigned 1461 to 1470 and again 1471 until 1483).

2. C) Paris. The fatal crash occurred in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel while Diana’s vehicle was being pursued by paparazzi. In July and August of 1997, Diana and Dodi Al Fayed had spent their final weeks together on the Fayed family luxury yacht, Jonikal, boarding the vessel from St Tropez and sailing across the Ligurian Sea to drop anchor near the Italian resort of San Remo.

Britain had signed the Treaty of London in 1839, which guaranteed Belgian neutrality; so, when Germany marched through Belgium to attack France, the British Empire was obliged to enter the conflict. The June 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo set off the initial July Crisis, triggering a chain reaction of European alliances that ultimately led to the World War. The May 1915 sinking of the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania by a German U-boat killed nearly 1,200 people, pivoting global public opinion and severely straining relations between Germany and the United States.

4. C) Tilbury Fort. This is where Elizabeth uttered the legendary line, “I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a concrete elephant”. In the peerless Blackadder, that is – in reality, it was more like, “I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too”. It was largely just great PR – the English navy had already scattered the main Armada in the days prior to her visit. Greenwich Palace was where Elizabeth I was born and was where her Privy Council drafted defence plans as the Spanish fleet approached. Dover Castle was where troops scanned the horizon for the first signs of the invading ships.

5. B) The longbow. The English longbowmen decimated the charging French knights and established a century of English tactical dominance on the battlefield. The crossbow was the weapon favoured by French mercenaries from Genoa, who constituted most of the force sent against the English, but the weapon had a slow reload time and was rendered ineffective after its strings were ruined by a sudden downpour before the battle. The trebuchet was a mechanical siege engine used for smashing stone castle walls, making it far too heavy and stationary to be deployed in open-field infantry engagements like Crecy.

6. C) Second cousin. George I and Queen Anne were both great-grandchildren of King James I/VI through his daughter Elizabeth Stuart, the “Winter Queen of Bohemia”. Because the 1701 Act of Settlement prohibited Roman Catholics from wearing the crown, George bypassed dozens of closer blood relatives to claim the throne.

7. A) London Euston. The train was travelling southbound from Glasgow Central, and the 15-member gang’s haul was £2.6 million. The Heathrow Airport trading estate was the site of the infamous 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery, where armed thieves accidentally stumbled upon and stole three tonnes of gold bullion worth £26 million. Baker Street in London was the site of a 1971 bank vault raid, where a gang tunnelled into a Lloyds Bank branch from a leather goods shop they had leased next door.

8. A) Smithfield. Wallace was publicly executed here, and a memorial plaque stands today near St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Tower Hill was primarily reserved for the beheading of nobles or people who had hacked off Henry VIII; while Tyburn, located near Marble Arch, was the primary site for mass public hangings of common criminals via the famous Tyburn Tree gallows from the medieval era to the eighteenth century.

9. B) Parliamentary reform and voting rights. The 60,000 peaceful working-class demonstrators were seeking the right to vote, an outrage that led to a cavalry charge that killed 18 people. While the abolition of slavery was a headline-grabbing moral campaign during this era, it was handled through parliamentary lobbying rather than local rallies. The repeal of the Corn Laws later became a dominant political movement in Manchester during the 1830s and 1840s, led by the Anti-Corn Law League to protest bread taxes, decades after the Peterloo tragedy.

Julius Caesar had led the initial, brief military expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC, while Aulus Plautius was the general chosen by Emperor Claudius to lead the actual, permanent invasion of the island in 43 AD, long before the destruction of Pompeii.

He writes about all manner of things, from art and landscape to travel and biography, often rooted in his native northeast, and always delivered with a terrific ease and readability.

When I decided to write some articles on British dragons, I knew Harry was the go-to man for dishing the dirt on the famous Lambton Worm. It’s a great story, featuring some genuine medieval history, an ancient legend, and a Victorian-era reboot in the form of a riotous song. As a former Newcastle University student and a veteran of the English folk scene, I must admit I knew the song before I’d read anything else about the Lambtons and their pet dragon, and I’m glad to see that Harry has included a version of the song at the end of his article. It’s performed by one of the best folk-rock bands of the 1970s - the mighty Hedgehog Pie.

So, over to Harry for this great finale to my British Dragons trilogy…

The Chorus of ‘The Lambton Worm’

Most people in northeast England will have heard of the legend of the Lambton Worm, but I suspect few outside of the area will know of the tale. Where the people of Tyneside have the anthem ‘Blaydon Races’, those on Wearside have a song based on that ancient legend. And I’ll start by clarifying the term worm, an archaic name for a dragon or sea serpent derived from the Germanic ‘wyrm’.

The first mention of the name Lambton is of John, Lord of Lambton, who lived about 1150 and the Lambton he was lord of was the village of Lambton and its surrounding lands, which today lie close to the City of Sunderland. Lambton is believed to be Anglo-Saxon, meaning a sheep farm, or village within a sheep farming area.

The Lambtons remain an important family in County Durham today, although they may not have the wider influence they once had. In the past, they owned Lambton Castle (some British readers might remember the BBC series ‘The Paradise’ filmed in the castle) and had much political influence in Britain, with several prominent figures, including military leaders and politicians. While there is no longer a Lord Lambton, the Lambton family’s title is Earl of Durham which was a title created in 1833 for another John (confusingly, John seems to have been an extremely popular first name in the Lambton family) Lambton, known at the time as “Radical Jack”, as he played a leading role in the passing of the Reform Act in 1832 that gave the vote to a broader section of the British population. He was also the author of the ‘Report on the Affairs of British North America’, known in Canada as the ‘Durham Report’, which influenced Canada’s future political structure.

More recently, the Lambton family member I remember was Antony, a controversial figure who resigned as a Conservative MP in 1973 after a scandal involving sex workers and illegal drugs. Though he never inherited the title of Earl of Durham, he was often referred to informally as “Lord Lambton”.

The earliest written record of the legend of the Lambton Worm was from the historian William Hutchinson, who wrote in 1785:

Fatfield Staithes ... Near this place is an eminence called the Worm Hill, which tradition says was once possessed by an enormous serpent, that wound its horrid body round the base; that it destroyed many provisions, and used to infest the Lambton estate, till some hero in that family engaged it, cased in armour set with razors, and when it would have crushed the combatant by enfolding him, sustaining a thousand wounds, fell at last by his falchion [a type of sword].

But the story of the Lambton Worm is far older. No one knows when it was first told, but it is believed that the story, with its elements of medieval chivalry, curses, and monstrous beasts, has been an oral tale for centuries, sharing similarities with dragon-slaying myths across Europe (think Beowulf and George and the Dragon, etc.)

The Lambton Legend

According to legend, a young John Lambton, heir to the Lambton estate, was a rebellious and mischievous boy. One Sunday, while his family and all the other Lambton estate residents were attending church, he went fishing in the River Wear that flowed near the Lambton estate. After hours of fishing, his hook caught something powerful and quick. He toiled for what seemed an age and finally pulled his prize from the river, only to discover not a fish but a tiny black worm-like creature that twisted and coiled with great power. The beast had the head of a salamander and needle-sharp teeth. Cursing, John wondered what to do with the creature when he heard the voice of an older man behind him who warned John not to throw the creature back into the river. So, John put the beast into his catch basket. But while walking home, a feeling of unease swept over him, and he threw his catch into an old well.

The years passed, and John went off to the Crusades as a Knight of Rhodes, fighting far from home in penance for his profligate youth. While John was away, the Worm strengthened in its deep, dark well.

One night, the fully matured Worm emerged from the well and coiled itself around a hill (see later - exactly which hill is still debated today). As the news of the Worm spread throughout the Lambton estate, those brave enough went as close as they dared to glimpse the creature, which had no legs or wings but a thick, muscled body that rippled as it moved. Its head was large, and its gaping mouth bristled with what were now razor-sharp teeth.

For a brief time, the Worm did nothing, but this lull was short-lived, and soon the hungry beast became bolder and bolder, eating cattle, sheep, and even the occasional child who came too near its hill. Some brave villagers tried to kill the beast but were crushed and drowned in the river or torn to pieces by its fangs.

After seven years had passed, John returned from the Crusades as a changed man and a powerful and seasoned knight. When he heard of the plight of his estate, he suspected the Worm was the same one he had caught years ago. He therefore saw it as his duty to kill the now dangerous creature so that people could again live safely and peacefully.

John tried to kill the Worm several times but failed, as by this point, it was too mighty, and no matter how gravely John injured it, the Worm would always escape and recover. As skilled a Knight as he was, John needed help.

So, John sought the advice of a wise local woman, who confirmed that he was responsible for the Worm and the only one who could kill it. She told John to have a blacksmith make a suit of armour wrought with razor-sharp double-head spikes studded throughout its surface. Then he was to go to the Worm’s hill, let the Worm wrap itself around him and allow the spikes of his armour to do their job. But she added that after slaying the Worm, John must kill the first living thing he saw afterwards, or his family would suffer a curse for nine generations that none would die peacefully in their bed.

John listened to the advice and swore an oath to complete his task. He had the armour made to the instructions. Then, with the wise woman’s condition in mind and fearing a member of his family would be the first living thing he saw, John arranged that once he had slain the beast, he would sound his hunting horn as a sign that his father should release one of the hunting dogs for John to kill. He then went off to battle the Worm that, on seeing him, slithered off its hill. It wrapped itself around John in an attempt to crush him, but as the wise woman predicted, as the Worm did so, the spikes of John’s armour cut through the Worm’s body, shredding its soft flesh. Eventually, the Worm grew so weak that John could despatch it with one heavy sword blow to its head, and the current of the River Wear then carried away the pieces of the Worm.

To signal his success, John then blew three blasts on his hunting horn. But in the heat of the moment, his father ran to congratulate him rather than release the dog. Thinking of the wise woman’s condition, John was now in a tragic dilemma, but unable to kill his father, John chose to break the oath. An action that would haunt the Lambton family for generations.

Enter the Victorians

It’s a good story, and history doesn’t record the demise of all of the early Lambtons, although it is known that in 1583, Robert Lambton drowned at Newrig; Colonel William Lambton was killed at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644, and Henry Lambton died while travelling in his carriage on Lambton Bridge in 1761. It is said that Henry’s brother, a General, kept a horse whip by his bedside to ward off violent assaults should the Worm ever appear again. He died in his bed at an old age.

Much of the credit for modern awareness of the story of the Lambton Worm comes from the popular Victorian folk song written in 1867 by C M Leumane. The song proved very popular but did cause some controversy about the whereabouts of the hill around which the Worm supposedly wound itself.

In the 1785 story, William Hutchinson mentioned a ‘worm hill’ near a former coal mining village called Fatfield. A hill with such a name is in that area; however, in the later song, C M Leumane introduced a twist, putting in doubt the hill’s location and bringing another layer of mystery to the legend.

Seven times roond Pensher Hill…

The ‘Pensher’ (the northeast dialect pronunciation of Penshaw) Hill is located near the once-coal-mining village of Penshaw, about a mile from Fatfield as the crow flies. Standing at four hundred and fifty feet (circa one hundred and ninety metres), Penshaw Hill dwarfs the more modest Worm Hill of fifty-two feet (circa eighteen metres). Atop Penshaw Hill also sits the Penshaw Monument.

The debate between Fatfield and Penshaw as to whose is the ‘true’ Worm Hill continues to this day. And Penshaw’s claim probably comes from the Monument I mentioned. A folly built from local sandstone, some twenty years before the writing of the folk song, in honour of the prominent British politician John Lambton, the 1st Earl of Durham, which I mentioned above. The monument was designed as a replica of the Temple of Hephaestus, a significant Greek deity associated with fire and metalworking, and it stands 70 feet (21 metres) tall. Though it resembles a temple, it has no interior rooms or roof—it is an open-air structure. The monument was funded by public subscription, indicating the widespread recognition of John Lambton in northern England.

Whatever the argument about the Worm, Penshaw Hill is the site of the only triple-rampart Iron Age hill fort known in Northern England. The spiral patterns or furrows suggested by the legend that the Worm formed by winding around the hill could be the triple ramparts of the hill fort. Today, the National Trust manages the Monument, a popular landmark and walking destination. On certain days, visitors can climb to the Monument’s top via a spiral staircase inside one of the columns to enjoy the panoramic views of Sunderland, Durham, and the River Wear.

To recap from my previous article on the origin of British dragons, there are four distinct species on the island. The rarest is the Scandinavian-style beastie, of Beowulf and The Hobbit fame. The commonest type is the Worm or Wyrm, the favoured dragon in legends from northern England. The third is the Wyvern, known in Wales as the Gwiber, a relatively small, snakelike creature. The sea serpent is a close relative of these terrestrial dragons.

Welsh folklore warns that if a snake manages to drink human milk and consume bread consecrated for the Holy Communion, it will transform into a venomous Gwiber. These beasts regularly attacked people, killed livestock, and blighted the land with their toxic breath, rather like Lludd’s May Day dragon plague (detailed in the previous article).

Montgomeryshire was host to a particularly powerful Gwiber with two lairs, both named Nant-y-Wiber, at Penygarnedd and in Llansilin. The locals were in despair at the creature’s depredations, until they discovered its weakness: it was allergic to the colour red, that most Welsh of colours, a hue that caused it to fly into an uncontrollable fury. The Llansilin villagers erected a large stone pillar directly along the regular flight path between the Gwiber’s two mountainous lairs and draped it in bright scarlet cloth studded with iron spikes. Infuriated by the red fabric, the Gwiber attacked the pillar, shredding its body on the iron spikes and eventually bleeding to death at the base of the pillar.

A similar tactic of visual trickery was used to eliminate the last dragon of Radnorshire, a monster measuring three yards and one inch (2.77 metres) in length. This creature would routinely ravage the countryside during the daytime and then sleep off its excesses on the stone tower of Llandilo Graban Church. Several would-be dragon slayers scaled the tower but failed to slay the monster with conventional weapons, which could not pierce its hide. Many died in the attempt, and the parish offered a reward for anyone who could come up with a plan. A plough-boy did just that, carving a life-sized dragon hunter from oak and covering it with iron hooks and red clothing. The dummy was secured to the church tower while the dragon slept, and when it awoke, it attacked. You can guess the rest – iron hooks + red clothes = furious dead dragon.

Sea Serpents and Worms in Scotland

The Mester Stoor Worm was an enormous sea serpent that ravaged the northern seas between Scotland and Scandinavia. It crushed sailing ships with its tongue and blighted crops and spread disease with its toxic breath, even though people sacrificed seven virgins to it every week in appeasement. When the king’s daughter drew the short straw in the sacrifice lottery, a boy named Assipattle came to the rescue. He sailed his small boat down the yawning serpent’s gullet and set its oil-rich liver on fire using a piece of burning peat. In its death throes, the monster’s falling tongue created the sea dividing Denmark from Sweden, its teeth became the Orkney, Shetland, and Faroe Islands, and its body formed Iceland.

The Linton Worm of Roxburghshire was a much smaller beastie, but still big enough to coil its body around a hill, when it wasn’t hiding out in its cave near the church. The Laird of Lariston killed the Worm by thrusting a piece of burning turf down its throat on his lance, a smaller-scale version of the plot adopted by Assipattle.

The Forfarshire dragon devoured nine sisters at the Nine Maidens’ Well near Pittempton. Martin, the lover of one of the victims, pursued the monster with a wooden club, wounding it at Strathmartin and finally killing it at Martinstane. In its dying confession, the creature listed Pittempton, Baldragon, Strikemartin, and Martinstane as the landmarks of its defeat.

The story of dragons in Britain begins with the tale of Lludd and Llevelys, vividly narrated in The Mabinogion, a twelfth-century Welsh collection of much older legends.1 Lludd’s kingdom suffered three plagues – the arrival of spies from the Coraniaid, who could somehow hear every word spoken in the royal court; the mysterious disappearance of all the court’s food supplies each night; and a terrible shriek that blighted the island every May Day, draining men’s strength, causing women to miscarry, and killing crops and animals. Lludd conferred with his Sherlock Holmes-like brother, Llevelys, king of France, and the cause of the plagues was revealed.

The Coraniaid were defeated by the application of a magic concoction brewed from crushed beetles – obviously. The court food was disappearing into the stomach of a huge giant who magicked everyone to sleep before indulging in his thievery. Lludd thwarted the sleep spell by plunging himself into a vat of icy water to stay awake and confronted and defeated the giant.

The land-blighting May Day shriek, meanwhile, was caused by two dragons, engaged in an eternal battle like a huge, scaly, fire-breathing metaphor. One was the Red Dragon of Britain; the other was a White Dragon, representing the Anglo-Saxons who hadn’t yet appeared in the story. Clever Llevelys told Lludd how to conquer the reptiles, instructing him to first locate the geographical centre of Britain, which Lludd’s dodgy mathematical equipment revealed as Oxford. Lludd’s navvies then dug a deep pit in the centre of the town, in which a mead-filled cauldron was placed. The pit was covered with a satin cloth to conceal the Scooby-doo-like trap.

At dusk, the two airborne dragons appeared, eventually plunging into the pit from exhaustion. Transforming themselves into pigs, they drank the mead and fell into a drunken slumber. Lludd’s team wrapped the dragon-piggies in the satin cloth and hauled them to Snowdonia, burying them deep at the foot of the fortress Dinas Ffaraon on Mount Snowdon. Hurrah, no more May Day plague.

Enter Merlin…

The dragons slept off their indulgencies until the fifth century AD, when King Vortigern, harried by Anglo-Saxon usurpers, attempted to rebuild the fortress on Snowdon, calling it Dinas Emrys. However, after each attempt to build, the masonry collapsed. Vortigern’s court Druids advised him that only the blood of a fatherless child could stabilise the walls. Such a one was found – Merlin, whose mother was mortal but whose father was a demon. However, the intended sacrificial victim exposed the Druids’ ignorance and told Vortigern to dig. Under the fortress’s foundations, the workmen found a pool, at the bottom of which sat two stone troughs containing the dragons buried by King Lludd. Released to recommence their battle, the Red and White dragons took to the air and locked claws.

The White initially had the upper hand, but eventually the Red rallied its strength, let out a terrible cry (presumably the one that blighted the crops, etc.) and forced its foe to submit. Merlin interpreted this scrap as a prophecy about Britain’s future. The White Dragon was the invading Anglo-Saxons, while the Red one was the native Britons. Although the Saxons would oppress the island for generations, the native Cymry would eventually rise, unite, and reclaim their ancestral lands and freedom. This legend permanently linked the Red Dragon to Welsh identity, establishing the creature as a primary emblem of resistance, royal (non-English) authority, and national survival.

The legend of Vortigern’s dragons was created by Nennius in the 9th century AD. In his version, Merlin is called Ambrosius. Geoffrey of Monmouth picked up the plot and gave it a political punch, taking Nennius’ optimistic vision of an ascendant Red Dragon as a reality. Oxford-based Geoffrey was writing for a Norman aristocracy with strong Breton links, and the Bretons were the original Britons displaced by the invading Anglo-Saxons. For Geoff, the legend of the Red and White is the story of the Saxons getting their comeuppance in 1066.

Inspired by Merlin’s prophetic visions and the fiery celestial omens that appeared in the night sky, King Arthur’s father, Uther (three kings on from Vortigern, sometime around the latter half of the fifth century AD) used two golden dragons as his military standards. This act earned him the title Pendragon, meaning Head Dragon (i.e., top dog of the British warlords). Uther adopted the golden dragon as his royal insignia, ensuring that whenever British warriors marched into battle against foreign invaders, they did so beneath the protective gaze of the dragon emblem, a symbol inherited by Uther’s son, King Arthur.

This dragon insignia appears as a symbol across the various tellings of the Arthur legends. In Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae and Wace’s Roman de Brut, Arthur carries a golden dragon standard and wears a matching dragon helm. In later medieval romances, the dragon banner has magical properties, breathing fire and smoke to unnerve enemies.

But how had the Red Dragon become the Golden Dragon?

The Origin of British Dragons

The colour-shift from the red dragon of the Lludd and Vortigern legends to the golden dragon of Uther and Arthur seems like a fumbled plot device; however, to Geoffrey’s twelfth-century Anglo-Norman patrons, the Red Dragon was associated with contemporary Welsh rebellions and anti-Norman prophecies of British vengeance, almost as if the evil Saxon White Dragon had switched allegiance to the Normans. By changing the dragon’s colour to gold, Geoffrey avoided suggesting that Arthur was a Welsh warlord, setting him up as a pan-British European emperor. He was also probably linking Arthur’s insignia to folk memory of the golden draco standards of the late Roman Empire in Britain, which featured a hollow bronze dragon head attached to a long, fabric windsock body. When soldiers charged at a full gallop, the wind rushing through the metal jaws created a howling sound, and some versions even spat sparks and smoke. This would appear to be the origin of Arthur’s fiery banners, the legends of real, fire-breathing monsters, and Lludd’s ruinous dragons. (Geoffrey’s choice of gold for his Arthurian dragon banners also echoes the golden heraldry favoured by the ruling Norman kings, who were rather Trumpian in matters of taste.)

The dragon legends in the Matter of Britain stories may have been bolstered by finds of fossilised reptile bones in quarries and along the island’s coastline – who knows. Stories of dragons also reflect deep-seated cultural anxieties about untamed wilderness, such as marshes and forests, poisoned water supplies, and barren land.

Introduction to Dragon-spotting

There are four broad categories of dragon in Britain: the Fire-Drake, the Worm, the Wyvern, and the Sea Serpent. The first in the list is the rarest: the fiery Scandinavian-style beastie as encountered, fatally, by Beowulf. This is the species that Tolkien ran with in The Hobbit and other stories. Comets were sometimes interpreted as fire-dragons of this kind, including the ones spotted in the skies over Lindisfarne prior to the invasion of the Vikings in AD 793. The dragon slain by late-second-century AD St George at Uffington Castle in Oxfordshire is usually depicted as a classic Scandi four-legged-with-wings-and-fire monster, too; but sometimes not.

The commonest species in the dragon family is the snakelike Worm or Wyrm, the favoured beast in legends from northern England. The third type is the Wyvern, known in Wales as the Gwiber (both words related to “viper”, from the Latin vipera), a relatively small, snakelike creature with two legs, wings, and a long tail.2 The sea serpent is an aquatic relative of the Worm.

As a lengthy postscript to this story of symbolic and politicised dragoneering, I’ve included some of my favourite British dragon legends, along with their origins, in a forthcoming paid-subscriber post. Meanwhile, I’ll end on a dignified and sombre note with this quote from that most venerable and serious of folk ballads, The Lambton Worm, which is the subject of the third post in this dragon trilogy, coming your way next Thursday:

Before now, I’d never wished to be based in Clacton-on-Sea. But like many others, I would love to vote for someone – anyone, anything – against Nigel Farage, and the appeal of chief challenger Count Binface has grown exponentially as his entertaining standup morphs into a Martin Bell-like anti-crook ticket.

I’d always assumed that the ‘tradition’ of joke candidates in by-elections began in the 1960s with Screaming Lord Such in cahoots with Monty Python’s election-night sketch. But while that’s true to a certain extent, there’s a more complex backstory, and the incidence of eccentrics and protesters standing against establishment politicians is almost as old as the election process itself.

Rotten luck

Before the major cleanup dictated by the Reform Act 1832, the distribution of parliamentary seats was gloriously undemocratic, reflecting feudal history rather than how many people lived in a given constituency. This led to a multitude of “rotten boroughs”, and these provided the earliest backdrop for eccentric election procedures – not yet blokes with bins on their heads, but definitely jokes of a certain kind.

Old Sarum in Wiltshire was a rotten borough par excellence, electing two Members of Parliament despite the constituency consisting of sheep fields, an ancient earthwork, and a few small farms by the late eighteenth century. By the 1800s, those two MPs were being returned to Parliament by ten voters. Dunwich in Suffolk also had two MPs long after most of the medieval town had fallen into the North Sea. Apart from a contemporary joke that fish were casting votes, the rotten pair made it as far as the 1832 Reform Act.

Gatton in Surrey, the property of a single landowner, was another glorious example of ten voters returning two MPs. Compared to this, Newtown on the Isle of Wight, whose two MPs were elected by 30 voters, was positively democratic.

In Bramber, West Sussex, voting rights were tied to burgage plots, allowing buyers of those properties to control elections.1 There were 30 houses in the borough and fewer than twenty electors. The two owners of the burgage plots, the Duke of Rutland and Lord Calthorpe, each nominated an MP until 1832.

In 1987, TV comedy returned to the hustings with Blackadder the Third’s rotten borough parody in the episode Dish and Dishonesty. The tiny constituency of Dunny-on-the-Wold, consisting of three cows, an elderly chicken, a dachshund named Colin, and a single voter, is contested and won by Edmund Blackadder’s servant, Sod-off Baldrick.

Beer and bribery

In the 1784 Westminster election, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, campaigned for the Whig candidate John Fox, trading kisses for votes. This is an unusual manifestation of something very common in pre-Reform Act elections: bribery. Candidates would routinely pay huge sums to supply free beer and food for pliable voters, a practice known as ‘nursing a constituency’.

In my book The Little History of Lincolnshire (2025), I quoted the following example of bribery at its best, taken from George Shaw’s Old Grimsby (1897):

For a long time the borough was notorious for elections characterised by open bribery and unblushing corruption. The most remarkable was the one known as Pole and Wood’s election in 1790 … It lasted nine months during which time the public houses were open day and night, and so freely did the electors avail themselves of their privileges that one fourth of them killed themselves before its close. £80,000 was spent on both sides. One of the candidates. Mr. Pole, a London banker, during his canvas scattered money in the streets as he passed along, for the independent freemen to pick up. Notwithstanding this profuse liberality he found himself left out in the cold by a minority of five … Bribes were given varying in amount from £20 to £250. Not only beer, but beef was given away, oxen being roasted, cut up and distributed freely, and in some cases living animals were presented as bribes … The result was, the election was declared void and the persons elected unseated, and re-elected without opposition.

Another great day for democracy. And although the Reform Act 1832 hit most of this on the head, recent attempts by certain tech billionaires to ‘reward’ voters financially show that this fine old tradition is not quite dead.

University challenge

Oxford and Cambridge Universities each used to send two MPs to Parliament. These weren’t rotten boroughs, and they were unique in not representing geographic constituencies. The concept was cooked up by James I via Royal Charter in 1603, to represent academia in Parliament. Voting was only open to graduates with a Master’s degree or higher.

I can’t help thinking these MPs were a good idea, and there are many academics today that I would happily see elected to parliament on democratically dubious lines. The candidates were usually prominent national figures (albeit with party political affiliations): Oxford University’s MPs included Sir Robert Peel and William Ewart Gladstone, who both went on to become Prime Ministers; Cambridge University’s contributions included two more PMs, William Pitt the Younger and Lord Palmerston, and Sir Isaac Newton.

The two university constituencies survived the Great Reform Act of 1832 and were only abolished by the Representation of the People Act 1948, and they didn’t die without their proponents arguing fiercely in their favour. The last university MPs were snuffed out by the general election of February 1950.

Screaming for more

This is all very interesting, but it’s not the silly names and fancy dress we associate with eccentric candidates today. However, Screaming Lord Such was not the first candidate in that long line of unorthodox nominees.

John Wilkes, a political agitator, libertine and proto-porn author, contested the Middlesex constituency in March 1768. Despite winning the seat, the House of Commons expelled him and declared the election void. The local electors responded by re-electing Wilkes three more times. The situation caused a constitutional crisis, establishing a precedent for voter rights when Parliament finally conceded and allowed Wilkes to take his seat in 1774. He positioned himself as an anti-establishment outsider fighting an elite, corrupt political system. Sound familiar?

John Nichols Tom was a Cornish maltster who upped sticks for Kent using the alias Count Moses Rothschild before plumping for Sir William Courtenay, Knight of Malta and heir to the Earl of Devon. He stood as an independent candidate in Canterbury in the 1832 general election on an anti-tithe, pro-labourer platform, dressed in velvet robes befitting his multi-titled pretend status. He won over 300 votes. After being committed to Kent County Lunatic Asylum between 1833 and 1837 following a perjury conviction, Tom began preaching messianic populist rebellion to the many Kentish farmworkers left destitute by the New Poor Law of 1834. Nemesis awaited at the Bossenden Wood uprising of May 1838, in which Tom shot a constable. The army intervened, eleven people were killed, and Tom was one of them.

The Mayor of Garratt Elections began in the mid-18th century in the hamlet of Garratt, near Wandsworth, parodying contemporary parliamentary contests with such crude comic gusto that they attracted crowds of up to 80,000 spectators at their height. Local publicans funded the festivities and made a small fortune from sales on the day. The candidates in the 1760s included Lord Twankum, Kit Noisy, Sir John Crambo, Sir Christopher Dashem, Sir George Comefirst, Sir William Bellows, and “Batt from the Workhouse”. The candidates’ speeches generally mocked political corruption, promised cheaper gin, and pledged various absurd policies. After the death of the last Mayor of Garratt, muffin seller “Sir” Harry Dimsdale in 1795, the 50-year tradition lost the support of the local publicans and vanished.

The modern era of eccentric candidates arguably began with Commander Bill Boaks, who stood in several elections between 1950 and 1982. His political career got off to a great start in 1950 when he contested Walthamstow East as an independent candidate to run against Prime Minister Clement Attlee. However, he filed for the wrong constituency, as Attlee actually represented Walthamstow West.

Often campaigning from a bicycle laden with signboards, Bill Boaks’ main aim was to highlight the issue of pedestrian road deaths. The parties he represented included the Public Safety Municipal Democratic Alliance; the Air, Road, Public Safety, White Line Defence Association; Trains & Boats & Planes; and the Democratic Monarchist Public Safety Alliance. Boaks’ electoral crusade ended with a grimly appropriate incident in 1984 when he was hit by a car after alighting from a bus, a bitter blow for a man who had dedicated his campaigning to road safety. The head injuries he sustained led to his death in 1986.

The shift towards theatrical political satire began in 1963 when David Sutch, a musician with the stage name Screaming Lord Sutch, stood in the Stratford-upon-Avon by-election after the seat was vacated by John Profumo amidst his celebrated political scandal. Sutch founded the National Teenage Party to contest the seat, and in 1983, he established the Official Monster Raving Loony Party (OMRLP), surely influenced by the Monty Python election sketch that had featured candidates from various tiers of the Silly Party. Sutch grinned from the stage in his top hat at more than forty parliamentary elections, establishing the tradition of fringe candidates lining up on the stage at election counts alongside mainstream party hopefuls.

The OMRLP campaigned on a few supposedly joke issues that were subsequently adopted into British law, including passports for pets, all-day opening for pubs, and the abolition of the dog licence.

And now for something completely different…

I don’t think we can understate the impact of that Election Night Special sketch on Monty Python’s Flying Circus in 1970. It features an election night broadcast in which the Sensible Party is pitted against the Silly Party, Slightly Silly Party, and Very Silly Party. Candidates include Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F’tang-F’tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel; Jethro Q. Bunn Whackett Buzzard Stubble and Boot Walrustitty; and Mr. Elsie Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzip.

With Screaming Lord Such having blazed the trail, eccentric candidates are now a feature of most elections. But none have gained more votes than Count Binface is projected to win in his face-off with Farage.

The character has a surprising 40-year history, beginning when a character called Lord Buckethead appeared in Todd Durham’s 1984 sci-fi parody film, Gremloids (originally released in the USA as Hyperspace). UK video distribution rights for the movie were owned by one Mike Lee, who wore the Buckethead costume when he stood as a candidate in the 1987 and 1992 general elections as a promotional stunt for the Gremloids video.

Comedian Jon Harvey took up the baton in May 2017, first donning the Buckethead persona for the June 2017 general election to challenge Theresa May in Maidenhead. Todd Durham was not impressed, and following a copyright dispute, Harvey relinquished the Lord Buckethead name and reemerged, phoenix-like, as Count Binface for the 2019 general election against Boris Johnson; in the 2021 and 2024 London Mayoral elections; and then in the Makerfield by-election against Andy Burnham. The stage-shots of Burnham, Binhead and the man dressed as a fox capture this long history of political election eccentricity perfectly.

Count Binhead is not the first unorthodox candidate to challenge Nigel Farage. Al Murray, in his guise as the Pub Landlord, stood against him in South Thanet in 2015 under the Free Parliamentary Party banner when the right-wing millionaire populist was still head of UKIP. Different party name, same old rubbish.

It’s that rubbish that makes the bin such an apt, blunt symbol of the voting choices in Clacton. The fact that the man behind the mask is very funny and able to fend off po-faced interviewers with a winning ease makes it all the more entertaining. And that’s what daft candidates are mainly about – highlighting political or social issues while dressed as the latest court jester.

The Clacton by-election takes place on 13 August 2026, with a record-breaking 34 people contesting the seat, resulting in the longest ballot paper in British electoral history. Other hopefuls include Laurence Fox for Reclaim (sadly, not the same fox as the one who stood with Binface and Burnham at Makerfield); Howling Laud Hope for the Monster Raving Loony Party; Nick the Incredible Flying Brick; and Baron Von Thunderclap.

But it’s really a Binface vs Farage farrago.

I first came across the poem The Battle of Brunanburgh in 1980 in Sweet’s Anglo-Saxon Reader, an indispensable volume for a first-year English Literature student with no desire to fight for the single copies of core texts in the university library. Sweet’s gave you a taster of the whole pre-Middle-English period, with enough translations and notes to produce a decent essay. In those heroic pre-Internet days, it was a passport to passing the First-Year Old English exam.

Sweet’s lifted the poem The Battle of Brunanburgh in its brief entirety from The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and I was intrigued by the story because of the widely held possibility that the battle was fought near Bourne in my home county of Lincolnshire. I never suspected at the time that there was a further link here: namely, that a character in this poem might be a version of the hero of the 13th-century Lay of Havelok the Dane.

Many years later, I followed a clue I had picked up in a magazine article (can’t remember which one) linking one of the kings on the Brunanburgh battlefield not just to Havelok, but to Hamlet, of Shakespeare fame. The game was afoot.

The North Sea, across which Lincolnshire gazes like an out-of-season tourist wishing they’d saved for a proper summer holiday, brings fluidity and unfathomable depth to folklore and legend. Armies, settlers, monarchs and monsters have bisected these waters in a state of constant metamorphosis. It’s impossible to remove the sea imagery from this maritime world – identities are liquid, languages merge, Danish Beowulfs become heroes of English poetry, Norwegian Trolls become Scottish Trows, and the historical exploits of real kings are dissolved into myth by the grey, rolling waves of the North Sea.

In a parallel transformation, the kings of Britain’s original Angles, Saxons and Jutes become the same kings as the ones ruling in Norway and Denmark, and those same Scandinavian kings become French Normans, who roll back in with the tide in 1066 and soak the island’s foundations with another wave of North Sea-derived peoples and stories. The extended North Sea, sloshing around the northern isles and down into the Irish Sea, is a complex cultural intersection, and its various attendant northern kingdoms have always picked up the folkloric flotsam and jetsam and made it their own.

Sorry, I could go on like this forever, hypnotised into waves of soggy imagery by the grumble and roar of the North Sea. But I must resist and home-in on the focus of this article – a single historical figure, Amlaíb mac Sitric, who made landfall on northern shores in two separate literary lineages. In England, he became the Danish prince Havelock, hero of a medieval romance and foster-son of the founder of the suitably named Grimsby (I can say that, as I was born there). In Scandinavia, via Celtic channels, Amlaíb evolved into another Danish prince, Amleth, whose story finally put down permanent roots as William Shakespeare’s perennial troubled kid, Hamlet.

Amlaíb mac Sitric: The historical and linguistic cord that binds

Amlaíb mac Sitric is the thread that connects Havelock and Hamlet. His first name is pronounced something like Ow-leev, but to confuse things, he is also known by many other titles, including Amlaíb Cuarán, Óláfr Sigtryggsson, Olaf Kvaran, and Anglicised forms such as Olaf Cuaran, Anlaf Sihtricson and Olaf Sihtricson. Amlaíb was a leader of the Uí Ímair, the Viking dynasty whose domination of the Irish Sea connected Ireland, Britain and the broader Norse world, and he ruled as King of Dublin in the tenth century AD, with a brief stint as King of York. The nickname Cuarán was added posthumously and comes from an Old Irish word for ‘sandal’ or ‘clog’, a mundane detail linked to later folklore and legend.

William of Malmesbury records that in 926, King Æthelstan and King Sihtric, the Norse King of York, met at Tamworth to make an alliance. To secure the truce, Æthelstan’s sister^[1] married Sihtric. Because Amlaíb was Sihtric’s son from a previous marriage, the union made Æthelstan Amlaíb’s step-uncle. When Sihtric died in 927, Æthelstan broke the Anglo-Danish alliance by invading and annexing York, forcing Amlaíb into exile. This betrayal provided the personal motivation that drove the latter to seek vengeance at Brunanburh, presenting a story of a dispossessed nephew that mirrors the core plots of both Havelok the Dane and Hamlet.

The historical Amlaíb mac Sitric almost certainly fought at the Battle of Brunanburh in 937, though not as the leader described in later traditions. The northern coalition against Æthelstan was led by his older cousin, Amlaíb Guthfrithsson, who was the King of Dublin at the time. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle only names the king as “Anlaf”, hence the confusion. Brunanburh was a catastrophe for the coalition, with the Chronicle recording the death of five young kings and seven earls. Though the invaders were humbled, Amlaíb mac Sitric survived to rule Dublin for nearly three decades before retiring to the monastery of Iona, where he died as a monk in 981.

Later medieval chroniclers conflated the two Amlaíbs into a single character named Anlaf. William of Malmesbury expanded the Brunanburh story in his twelfth-century Gesta Regum Anglorum, describing how Anlaf entered the English camp disguised as a minstrel to spy on King Æthelstan. His noble identity was betrayed when he was spotted burying his performance fee (no self-respecting monarch would allow himself to earn money by busking).

The coming of Havelock and Amleth

The historical reality of Amlaíb’s mac Sitric’s exile to Ireland after Brunanburgh and again after Æthelstan’s conquest of Viking York provided the raw material for the thirteenth-century Middle English poem The Lay of Havelok the Dane.

The romance follows Havelock, a dispossessed Danish prince whose throne is stolen by a treacherous guardian. Escaping to England, Havelock is adopted by Grim the Fisherman, founder of Grimsby. He matures into a man of supernatural strength but lives in poverty, working as a humble kitchen boy. He is mockingly given the alias Cuaran because of his poor footwear. This detail is the smoking gun that links the fictional romance directly back to the historical King of Dublin. The kitchen boy Cuaran eventually reveals his royal lineage through a miraculous light that shines from his mouth while he sleeps and reclaims his rightful thrones in Denmark and England. I’ve outlined the plot in a previous post.

Meanwhile, while the English tradition cast Amlaíb as a romantic hero, a darker psychological transformation had unfolded along the sea-tossed Viking trade routes. The Annals of the Four Masters, an early Irish chronicle, includes a tenth-century poetic fragment attributed to Queen Gormflaith. In it, she laments the death of her husband, King Niall Glúndub, who was slain in battle by a Viking leader widely identified as Sihtric Cáech, the father of Amlaíb mac Sihtric. In the stormy ebb and flow of North Sea, Irish Sea and North Atlantic storytelling, and among the wider Viking diaspora, the historical exploits and vengeful missions of this father-and-son duo began to conflate under the single Gaelic name, Amhlaide.

The name Amhlaide rode the sea-swell back to Scandinavia, where it was assumed to be linked to the Old Norse noun amlóði, meaning a fool, simpleton, or weakling. This linguistic development became a key element shaping the legends of the anti-hero Amleth/Hamlet.

In the late-twelfth century, Danish scholar Saxo Grammaticus wrote Gesta Danorum, which includes the legend of Amleth. The action is set in the 5th or 6th century AD. The splendidly named Feng murders his brother Horwendil, the King of Denmark, and marries his widow, Gerutha. To survive, the dead king’s son Amleth feigns madness to convince his uncle he poses no threat. After exile in England, during which he marries an English princess, Amleth returns to Denmark, persuades Gerutha to join his coup, traps Feng’s followers inside a hall, burns it to the ground, tracks down Feng, and kills him.

Having ascended the Danish throne, Amleth returns to Britain, where he unexpectedly takes a second wife, the Scottish queen, Hermuthruda. This provokes a military ambush by his English father-in-law, who was in cahoots with Feng all along. Suffering heavy casualties on the first day, Amleth props up his dead soldiers on stakes to create the illusion of an army doing better than it actually is. The English flee, and the victorious Amleth returns to Denmark.

The Journey to Shakespeare

The structural similarities between the English and Scandinavian legends of Havelock and Amleth hint strongly at their shared ancestry. The touchpaper of the literary evolution into Hamlet was lit in 1570 when François de Belleforest adapted Saxo’s narrative into French for the fifth volume of his Histoires Tragiques, which added psychological depth to the story. This text inspired a lost Elizabethan play performed around 1589, known to scholars as the Ur-Hamlet and widely attributed to Thomas Kyd. It was this version, rather than Saxo or Belleforest, that Shakespeare used as the template for his own plagiarising, overlong, slightly confusing masterpiece.

The historical ebb and flow of Amlaíb/Olaf/Amhlaide/Havelock/Amleth/Hamlet is powered by the North and Irish Seas. What are the facts? A real Norse-Irish aristocrat fought an English king at Brunanburh, was banished from England, ruled as King of Dublin, and retreated into legend. His story followed one North Sea wave to Denmark, evolving into a story of a feigned madman who plots revenge; another wave washed up on the banks of the Humber for a story of a dispossessed Danish prince reared by a Grimsby fisherman and winning the throne through guile and battle. Centuries later, the Danish myth flowed back across the North Sea to London, where Shakespeare transformed the cunning, vengeful Amleth into the introspective, melancholy Hamlet.

He’s a sweet prince; flights of angels sing him to his rest; and the rest is silence.^[2]

“The Forge of the Cyclopes”, a Dutch 16th-century print after a painting by Titian

With Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey dominating global screens like an overblown Hollywood advert for Satnavs, a lot of attention has been given to the simultaneously scary and tragic Cyclops, Polyphemus. I suppose it counts as a spoiler, but Odysseus blinds the giant by poking a stick into his single eye.

I’ve always wondered if this ancient tale of blinding inspired the not-quite-so-ancient-but-still-bloody-old legend of Balor, king of the Fomorians in Irish mythology. And, having had the same thought once again after watching The Odyssey, I thought it would be zeitgeisty to look at some of the many legends of one-eyed mythological monsters. Because there are so many such tales across the globe, I decided to rein it in by concentrating, as A Stranger In Your Country is wont to do, on British and Irish folklore.

In classical mythology, there are three types of Cyclopes. They are divine craftsmen in Hesiod’s Theogony (c. 750–650 BC), a bit like Tolkien’s Ring-forging elves. The Cyclopes here are the children of Gaia and Uranus, the Earth and Sky deities, and their task is to forge weapons for the gods. The second branch is Homer’s giant shepherd Cyclopes in The Odyssey (c. 750–700 BC), including the doomed Polyphemus. They are the children of the sea god Poseidon and the sea-nymph Thoosa. The third tribe of Cyclopes are great builders, as described by Hellanicus of Lesbos (c. 480–395 BC). They construct the stone walls of Mycenae and Tiryns.1

Later classical authors used Cyclopes mythology in their works, including Euripides, who runs with the Polyphemus ball; and Callimachus and Virgil, who cast their monocular antiheroes as assistants to the smith-god Hephaestus.

But these Classical Cyclopes are not alone…

Lifting the lid on Balor

Balor (aka Balar) was the giant king of the Fomorians, or Fomhoire, a seafaring race of demonlike beings who were defeated by the Tuatha Dé Danaan, a race of gods-cum-faeries, in the fight for territorial dominance in Ireland. The one-eyed Balor was the grandfather of Lugh (Lugus), the preeminent deity for the ancient Celts, linked to the benevolent sun. His clash with Balor can be interpreted as the harvest-friendly sun defeating the destructive sun of high summer. With heatwaves currently withering and burning landscapes across Europe and North America, Balor is symbolically in the ascendancy.

Balor’s nickname (one of them, at least), was Birug-derc, meaning ‘piercing eye’. Whatever he gazed on was destroyed in a laser-like blast, similar to the one used by Cyclops in the X-Men comics/movies. To avoid frazzling the Earth with every glance, he kept his eye closed. The eyelid was weighted down with a polished ring, and the lid was only lifted on the battlefield. This was achieved by four men wielding hooks, rolling back the leathery flap to enable the eye to perform its Godzilla-breath carnage.

When the Ordnance Survey was collecting local placenames in County Mayo in 1838, its surveyors noted down this local lore about Balor:

He had a single eye in his forehead, a venomous fiery eye. There were always seven coverings over this eye. One by one, Balar removed the coverings. With the first covering the bracken began to wither, with the second the grass became copper coloured, with the third the woods and timber began to heat, with the fourth smoke came from the trees, with the fifth everything grew red, with the sixth it sparked. With the seventh they were all set on fire, and the whole countryside was ablaze!

Balor’s eye had received these destructive properties during childhood when he watched his father’s Druids at work on a calamitous potion. The venom of the vapours entered his eye, conveying his malign superpower. Evidence of its fiery potency can still be seen in the barren, blasted slopes of the mountains Muckish and Errigal in Donegal, and there are various inland and offshore rocks across the country that are said to be remnants of people or animals frazzled by Balor.

The giant was killed by Lugh, who drove the baleful eye into the back of Balor’s head with a well-aimed slingshot. The story, as captured by Christian scribes, appears to have been influenced by the tale of David and Goliath. This is the only explanation for Lugh’s use of a sling, as he was famously associated with a burning spear, a sun symbol that would have been the obvious weapon to use against Balor. The Fomorian is also of manageable size in the later versions of the legend, like Goliath – huge, but not ridiculously so; whereas in earlier legends, he is sufficiently tall to crush 27 men when he falls in his ruin.

The oldest surviving manuscripts mentioning Balor date from the 12th century, and the story about the destructive eye and the equally destructive Lugh are captured in the legend of Cath Maige Tuired (The Second Battle of Mag Tuired). The only surviving complete copy is found in a 16th-century manuscript (British Library, Harleian 5280), with the story itself dating to the 9th or 10th century, at best guess, and with poetic fragments that may be older.

Welsh mythology has an echo of Balor in Ysbaddaden Bencawr (‘chief giant’) from The Mabinogion tale, Culhwch and Olwen. Ysbaddaden’s eyes have to be opened with large forks; he loses one of them in his tussle with King Arthur’s men; and he is eventually beheaded. The giant’s name means ‘hawthorn’ (Welsh ysbyddad), possibly as a symbol of an old gnarly tree producing a beautiful blossom (i.e., his daughter, Olwen). The earliest manuscripts of the story date from the 14th century, but this particular tale is widely accepted as being a couple of hundred years older than that, based on even older oral legends.

Fachan awful

The Fachan or Fachin is the Cyclops of the Scottish Highlands, having not just one eye, but one leg, one hand, protruding from its chest, and one super-strong tuft of hair sprouting from its head. In Popular Tales of the West Highlands, vol.4 (1893), J.F. Campbell mentions a Fachan with the rather homely name Glen Eitli, son of Colin. According to Katherine Briggs (1976), that is - but there seems to be a confusion here with the name Direach Ghlinn Eitidh, meaning “the Direach of Glen Etive” (Gleann Eite), Direach being an alternative name for the Fachan.

Douglas Hyde, in Beside the Fire (1890), translates a description of an Irish Fachan from the 17th-century manuscript Eachtra Iollainn Airmdheirg (The Adventures of Iollann of the Red Arms):

The morose unlovely churl … held a very thick iron flail club in his skinny hand, and 20 chains out of it, and 50 apples on each chain of them, and venomous spell on each great apple of them, and a girdle of the skins of deer and Roebuck around the thing that was his body, and one eye in the forehead of his black faced countenance, and one bear, hard, very hairy hand coming out of his chest, and one veiny, thick soled leg supporting him and the close, firm, dark blue mantle of twisted hard thick feathers, protecting his body, and surely he was more like onto devil than to man.

Cailleach and Beira – a Winter’s Tale

Cailleach Bhearra – “old woman of Beare” (as in the Beare peninsula in Cork, Ireland) – is the only female Cyclops I could find in Britain and Ireland, although she doesn’t always have one eye. Cailleach has become a receptacle for pretty much anything an imaginative folklorist cares to throw at her.

Her original home was the offshore island Inis Boi (Oilean Baoi). Like many characters from Irish mythology, Cailleach is thought to have her roots in the pantheon of pre-Christian Irish deities, with her roots in the province of Munster. She is simultaneously a goddess of the otherworld (the Celtic Hades); associated with sacred cattle; a nun; the matriarch of several tribes; a spirit of the wilderness and wildlife (In Scotland); the goddess of the harvest (in Connacht, where she manifests as a hare or other small animal running before the scythe at harvest time, and where the last sheaf cut at harvest is called the cailleach); and as one of three sisters, her siblings being based in Dingle and Iveragh.

Cailleach has a single eye in some of the many legends told about her; but in her earliest appearance in literature, a poem from the 9th century, she is simply described as a yellow-skinned old woman lamenting her youth – a piece of Christian slander, as old age is the one salient feature common to her various manifestations, a key attribute rather than a handicap.

In cahoots with her sisters, she has also been portrayed as a ‘triple goddess’, her ancient form associated with winter, and her young version linked to the summer. In Scottish and Irish folklore, she plants her staff in the ground at Beltane (May Eve) and transforms from the winter hag to the summer beauty. The winter-to-summer trick is not performed with one of the sisters but with the goddess Brìghde, who takes over at Beltane. As waters like nothing better than being muddy, in the three-sisters strand of the folklore, the women are all ancient.

When asked how she has lived so long, the Cailleach gave these reasons:

The top of her head had never seen the air, the sole of her foot had never touched the ground, she had never eaten except when hungry, and she had never stayed in bed after awakening … she never carried mud on her feet from one place to another, and she never threw out dirty water until she had first brought in clean water.2

Donald Alexander Mackenzie, in his 1917 Wonder Tales from Scottish Myth and Legend, took great liberties with the legend, reimagining Cailleach Bheur as Beira, Queen of Winter, the supreme mother deity of a Scottish pantheon of pre-Christian gods. Mackenzie synthesised the many scattered Highland and Irish cailleach tales into a cohesive, romanticised narrative that continues to colour the many books and essays written about the elusive goddess.

In Gaelic, Cailleach simply means “old woman”, while the adjective bheur or bheurra, derived from the placename in Cork, means “sharp”, or “biting”, as in a keen winter wind. Mackenzie dropped the Cailleach bit entirely and anglicised bheur into Beira. In the original legends, the character appears in many guises, albeit always as an old woman; but MacKenzie homed in on some of his favourite motifs to make Beira more cohesive and consistent – including the single, Cyclops-like eye; the Cailleach’s blue-black skin; and her hammer (a staff in many versions), which embodies winter, turning the ground to ice. It should be emphasised that he did all this by playing fast and loose with the sources. MacKenzie’s Edwardian mythos is exactly that – something neat and nationalistic, giving Scotland gods and goddesses comparable to the ones in Norse or Greek mythology. None of which makes his inventions valid or reliable as true folkloric source material.

Odin – Well read

Although Odin/Woden wasn’t born with a single eye, this brief look at British and Irish Cyclopes would be incomplete without a reverential nod to him, as he was king of the gods in Britain between the coming of the Anglo-Saxons in the early fifth century and the Christian conversion of the last pagan kingdom, Sussex, in AD 681. He was also the All-father of the Viking invaders/settlers from the late eighth to the early tenth centuries.

Odin sacrificed his right eye to gain cosmic wisdom - it was his version of eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden; and there was, indeed, a tree involved – the mighty Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Mímir’s Well sprang from one of its three roots, and the custodian, Mímir, had unparalleled wisdom due to sipping the magic water from a horn vessel called the Giallarhorn. No one else was allowed to drink there without paying an eye-watering price.

In Odin’s case, the price for taking a sip was his right eye – he gouged it out and dropped it down the well, after which Mímir allowed him to fill the Giallarhorn with the mind-expanding water and drink deep.

This legend comes from two 13th-century Icelandic works: the Poetic Edda, a collection of earlier traditional poems, and the Prose Edda, written by Snorri Sturluson.

Cyclops origins

In 1914, palaeontologist Othenio Abel suggested that Cyclopes legends may have been inspired by the skulls of the Dwarf elephants indigenous to several Mediterranean islands.3 It’s an irresistible idea – the skulls have a large central hole that looks like an eye socket, but in reality it’s the bit where the trunk joined the skull, a sort of giant nostril.

It has also been suggested that the Cyclopes are hazy memories of ancient Greek metalworkers wearing eye patches as protection against sparks or with tattoos on their foreheads. However, there is no historical evidence for this – it comes from the brilliant and very imaginative Robert Graves’ 1955 book, The Greek Myths.

But there are equally appealing, Graves-adjacent theories regarding the British and Irish one-eyed beasties. They are said to be folk memories of Druids or other sorcerers performing ritual magic. The prime evidence for the claim is found in The Second Battle of Mag Tuired, in which Lugh performs some corrguineacht (‘crane magic’, which involves impersonating the actions of that bird). The hero-god hops in circles around the Tuatha Dé Danann army, keeping one eye closed, with one hand waving free (to quote Bob Dylan4), and chanting a victory spell. The centuries roll by, Christianity sweeps the Druids away, and we’re left with the Fachan. Possibly.

There may be some instinctive, ableist imagining going on in these stories, too. In 1964, structural anthropologist Victor Turner, who helpfully popped up towards the end of my research for this article, asserted that the physical symmetry of an able-bodied human is lodged deep in our heads as “normal”, symbolising an ordered human society, while physical quirks such as one eye in the middle of the forehead are “abnormal”, a manifestation of chaotic nature, ergo danger.

All of which proves that when it comes to memorable scenes in The Odyssey and British and Irish folklore, the eyes have it.

In the British canon of pseudo-history largely shaped by 12th-century Geoffrey of Monmouth, Britain was originally called Albion, named after the first king of the native Giants. These aboriginals were, in turn, conquered by the Trojan Brutus, as told in the last instalment of this pseudo-history roundup. However, in the late 13th century, an alternative origins story sprang up, and it’s a narrative with an attention-grabbing opening gambit…

Princess Albina and her 32 sisters murdered their husbands on their joint wedding night. Their father, King Diosclesian of Syria (or Greece), had arranged the marriages, but the princesses refused to submit to men they considered to be of lower social status than themselves. As punishment for this mass mariticide, the king exiled his daughters to the sea. After miraculously reaching an uncharted land, Albina claimed it and named it Albion after herself, and the women survived by hunting and gathering. Unfortunately, they were seduced by demons, leading to the birth of a monstrous race of Giants. These creatures roamed the land until Brutus of Troy arrived, slaying them and creating the thoroughly human Kingdom of Britain.

The earliest version of this foundational myth is found in the Anglo-Norman poem Des Grantz Geanz (The Great Giants), written in the late-13th or early-14th century. An abridged version of the poem was later appended as a prologue to the various Geoffrey of Monmouth-derived Brut chronicles.

A version of the Albina legend became attached to the Lord Mayor of London’s Gogmagog parade in the sixteenth century. Here, the father of the female castaways was reidentified as the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who found 33 husbands to curb the wanton ways of his 33 wicked daughters. The sisters were having none of this, and under the leadership of the eldest sister, Alba, they murdered the loathsome Lotharios. For this crime, they were set adrift at sea, but fate washed them ashore on a windswept island, which they named Albion, after Alba. They intermingled with the resident demons and gave birth to a race of Giants, whose descendants included Gog and Magog – the Giants paraded every year at the Lord Mayor’s Show.

On the surface, the legend is telling us that wicked and unruly women must be yoked to upstanding men who can quell their wayward tendencies. The women confirm their sinful natures by consorting with demons in Albion. However, wrenching the legend from the patriarchal grip, it becomes a story of “Me Too” women refusing to be cowed and abused by men. The stuff about consorting with demons is misogynist and racist nonsense – the women made their home on the island of Albion and established a healthy matriarchy, taking the aboriginal inhabitants as their partners. Their former Syrian, Greek or Roman overlords were, of course, convinced of the inferiority and barbarism of anyone other than themselves, and the pre-Albion natives thus became “demons”.

King Diosclesian of Syria had 33 daughters to several unfortunate mothers over a period of ten years. When the eldest, Albina, reached 14, the king found her a husband; but Albina resisted the man’s advances and persuaded her father that she would choose her own partner. A year later, when would-be partners were found for five of her sisters who had now reached or passed the age of 14, Albina once again persuaded her father that the girls were wise and intelligent enough to find their own husbands. Due to his great love for Albina, the King reluctantly agreed to delay the wedding bells.

Making a difference - the Babbage machine

1. B. Charles Babbage. Part of Babbage’s inspiration was the Jacquard machine, patented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1804, based on earlier contraptions created for the textile industry by Basile Bouchon (1725), Jean Baptiste Falcon (1728), and Jacques Vaucanson (1740). As part of his work with the Difference Engine, Babbage also designed the first computer printer. Bruce Sterling was co-author, with William Gibson, of The Difference Engine (1990), a sci-fi novel and a foundational work in the steampunk genre.

2. C. Trojan. Aeneus was one of the many survivors who fled the sacked city of Troy, as described in Virgil’s Aeneid in the 1st century BC. The legend of Brutus was created by British writer Nennius in the 9th century AD and fleshed out in the 12th century by Geoffrey of Monmouth. In all, the couple had six children, but only one, the future Mary I, survived infancy, and Henry was the only other to be born alive. Francis I came to the throne in 1515, a macho young king against whom Henry VIII measured himself.

Dissatisfied with the 1713 peace treaties that followed the War of the Spanish Succession, Spain sparked the War of the Quadruple Alliance against Britain, France, Austria and the Dutch Republic. In 1719, they planned an invasion of Britain, joining with Scottish Jacobites to restore King James II, with the ultimate aim of diverting British forces from Europe and reclaiming lost territories. The plan failed largely due to the death of King Charles XII of Sweden, who had promised military backing that, consequently, never arrived.

6. B. 1925. The first incarnation of the Shipping Forecast was a telegraphic gale-warning system established by Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy in February 1861, following a storm that wrecked the steam clipper Royal Charter. A Morse code version was first broadcast by the Air Ministry on 1 January 1924 under the name Weather Shipping. The spoken version of the broadcast appeared in July 1925 as part of The Morning Weather Forecast for Farming and Shipping, broadcast from Daventry. In October 1925, the BBC introduced the first standalone Shipping Forecast in the format that survives to this day. In 1956, the shipping area Heligoland was renamed German Bight, Dogger was split to create a new area called Fisher, and Viking was added.

7. A. Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island). In 793, Viking longships made landfall at Lindisfarne Abbey in Northumbria, marking the beginning of the Scandinavian invasion of England. The Norwegian-Danes were a fixture for the next 273 years – the era only ended with the defeat of Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge in 1066, less than three weeks before the Battle of Hastings. The first recorded Viking landing and raid on the Isle of Wight occurred in AD 860, and on Romney Island in AD 892.

8. C. Corfu. Britain controlled the United States of the Ionian Islands as a protectorate from 1815 to 1864. The islands were Corfu, Paxoi, Lefkada, Ithaca, Cephalonia, Zakynthos and Kythira. Immediately prior to British rule, Corfu was controlled by France, having been annexed by the French First Republic in 1797, briefly held as a joint Russian-Ottoman protectorate, and retaken by Napoleon in 1807. In 1864, the UK peacefully ceded all seven islands to the Kingdom of Greece. Cyprus was under British control from 1878 to 1960. Although Britain never fully controlled Sicily, it occupied and effectively governed it during the Napoleonic Wars, from 1806 to 1815.

9. C. The shards of Narzil. In what Monty Python dubbed “some farcical aquatic ceremony”, the Lady of the Lake raised Excalibur from the water, presenting it as a symbol of Arthur’s divine right to kingship. Merlin, who accompanied the young king, warned him that the scabbard was far more valuable than the blade itself, as it possessed the power to protect its wearer from bleeding to death in battle. The sword in the stone is named Excalibur in some early versions of the legend; in others, it is just an unnamed sword. The shards of Narzil were reforged by elven smiths under the direction of Elrond for Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings.

10. B. The Irish Harp. On 13 May 1660, the harp was physically removed from the navy’s flags. The fleet was due to collect the exiled Charles II and hand him the crown after the demise of the Cromwellian Commonwealth. The King was, understandably, no fan of Commonwealth iconography, so workmen spent the afternoon unstitching the harps and sewing yellow cloth crowns and the initials C. R. over the old state arms. The Welsh Dragon, and indeed any symbol of Wales, has never been featured on a united British flag. The Cross of St Andrew has been present since 1606, when the first version of what we now think of as the “Union” flag was created.

11. C. English. While Edward III still spoke French as his primary language, he was the first post-Conquest king to mandate the use of English by law, in 1362, via the Pleading in English Act (aka the Statute of Pleading). The Norman elite had always conducted court cases and legal proceedings in Anglo-Norman French, which the common people could not understand. Combined with the Latin used in church services, the poor populace must have been permanently baffled. The 1362 Act declared that French was too unfamiliar to the general public; hence, all oral pleas, debates and judgements were to be conducted in English. The next year, 1363, saw Parliament opened in English for the first time.

12. B. St Kilda. The island was inhabited for over 2,000 years; but after a series of crop failures, medical emergencies, and a dwindling population, the remaining 36 residents requested relocation. On 29 August 1930, the British government evacuated the final inhabitants from the main island of Hirta to the Scottish mainland. Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides has a resident population of approximately 1,300 people, most of it concentrated in the northern village of Balivanich. Sula Sgeir is an uninhabited rocky island forty miles north of Lewis – a group of ten men from Ness hold a special license to conduct an annual, traditional gannet hunt here.

I thought this recent, unplanned conversation I had with Google’s Gemini generative AI was sufficiently thought-provoking to present here as a two-way conversation.

The exchange was sparked by a query I made to said AI, asking whether it could list some obscure pretenders from UK history that I could then research and add to my in-progress article on British pretenders from Edward II to the modern day. Asking the AI model to provide a breadcrumb trail is as far as I go in using it as a research tool; but on this occasion, I had omitted my usual request to “just provide a list, without extra details”. It was a Pandora’s Box moment.

Anyway, this is how our conversation panned out – an initial query about a hallucination led to some fascinating ruminations on the nature of folklore and the possibility of a new genre, “algorithmic lore”. See what you think…

Me: Are there any recent examples of pretenders I could explore, not necessarily to do with royalty? Pretend Lord Kitcheners or wannabe children of famous people, for example?

He used the alias Henry Kitchener and claimed that the late Field Marshal had secretly fathered him and left behind a massive hidden fortune. He managed to secure loans and social invitations from wealthy individuals eager to support the offspring of a national hero. The illusion shattered when the Kitchener family took legal action. It was revealed that de Boudry was a clerk with zero relation to the aristocratic military family. The state prosecuted him for fraud, exposing how easily public reverence for a war hero could be weaponised …

Gemini: Out of interest is exactly the right way to look at it, as tracing how that hallucination happened reveals a lot about how artificial intelligence works. I can confirm that the name Henry de Boudry is a complete fabrication. The figure does not exist in history, fiction, or any other sphere.

When attempting to fulfil the request for non-royal pretenders connected to famous figures like Lord Kitchener, I hallucinated a narrative to fit those exact parameters. The historical backdrop provided in the story is completely true. Lord Kitchener did die in 1916 when HMS Hampshire struck a mine, and because his body was never recovered, the tragedy sparked intense conspiracy theories. At the time, wild rumours circulated claiming he had survived, was secretly living in Russia, or had been assassinated by spies.

However, the leap to an illegitimate son named Henry de Boudry defrauding high society was a pure invention. To bridge the gap between the real conspiracy theories and the request for a pretender, a plausibly aristocratic-sounding name was generated on the spot. The resulting story blended the very real phenomenon of Edwardian societal impostors with the genuine mystery surrounding the death of Lord Kitchener. It serves as a classic example of how generative models can stitch true historical context together with entirely fake details to create a convincing narrative.

Me: A philosophical question – as AI hallucinations are, like this one, often believable and compelling, many of them will, over time, bleed into articles and books as people increasingly lean on AI as a research assistant. AI models will then feed on that ‘false’ info, which they can now reference and validate through online sources. Your hallucinations then become ‘true’ for a time – perhaps forever – in the manner of hoaxes. How much of a problem do you envisage this becoming?

Gemini: The scenario described is a real phenomenon often referred to by computer scientists as AI data feedback loops, or more vividly, model collapse. The concern is spot on. If generative AI outputs are republished online as factual history, future AI models will scrape that data, mistake it for verified fact, and reinforce it.

It is entirely plausible that a fictional figure like Henry de Boudry could be cited in a blog post, copied into a self-published book, and eventually integrated into mainstream digital history. This creates an AI-generated hoax that achieves legitimacy simply because it has been indexed and referenced online.

The severity of this problem as it unfolds relies on several factors. The risk is not equally distributed across all types of information. It poses a different threat level depending on the field of study.

High Risk in Niche History and Minor Biographies

For mainstream history (such as the main events of the Battle of Waterloo), there is an overwhelming amount of verified text online that drowns out AI errors. However, for niche topics, obscure historical figures, or local history, the pool of existing data is small. If an AI model hallucinates a plausible-sounding detail about a minor 17th-century clerk, that hallucination might instantly constitute 50% of the available online text on that specific subject. Once another writer copies it, the lie becomes the dominant narrative.

The Illusion of Citations

As AI models are trained to provide citations and links, they can inadvertently create a circular web of validation. As recounted in Part One of this series on the fictional history of Britain, Brutus, aka Brut, great-grandson of Trojan exile Aeneus, was directed by the goddess Diana to the island of Albion. Our plot resumes in Totnes, Devon, on the banks of the River Dart…

When Brutus and Corineus’ combined fleet of Trojan economic migrants hauled their ships ashore at Totnes, Brutus set his foot on a rock and claimed the island as his own. He renamed the land Britain (mysteriously swapping the u for an i) and declared that his followers would be called Britons. The stone he placed his size-12 Trojan sandal on still exists – the very unassuming Brutus Stone in Totnes.

Brutus’ sidekick Corineus took possession of the western region of Britain, which had the highest population of native Giants, who traced their lineage back to a patriarch called Albion, after whom the island had been named. Corineus called his territory Cornwall, in an approximation of his name, and this was the region that trained and maintained the bulk of the British army for the next couple of hundred years.

In a bid to avoid conquest, the native Albions, led by the huge Goemagot (sometimes Gogmagog), launched a surprise attack on the usurpers during a religious festival. The Trojans fought back with their trusty Bronze Age swords and slaughtered the invaders until only Goemagot remained alive. Brutus spared him specifically to match him against Corineus in a cage fight on the White House lawn – or, at least, a second first-millennium BC version thereof. It was a wrestling contest, said to be the founding bout of the traditional sport of Cornish wrestling.

It wasn’t a one-sided fight – Goemagot managed to break three of Corineus’ ribs before his luck ran out. Outraged and enraged in equal measure by the injury, Corineus hoisted the giant onto his shoulders, carried him to the summit of Plymouth Hoe, and chucked him off. Poor Goemagot splattered on the rocks.

With the giants defeated, Brutus searched for a suitable location for his capital city. He selected a site on the banks of the River Thames and founded Troia Nova, or New Troy. Over time, the name became Trinovantum and, eventually, London. The city was given seven walls to echo the structure of the long-gone Troy. Brutus compiled a code of laws for his citizens to ensure peaceful governance and is said to have ruled over the island with wisdom. Unless you happened to be an Albion Giant, that is. A friend and I were dining out recently, and she commented that the soup was too salty. This got me pondering on how long the average, non-aristocratic diner has been able to say “it’s too salty”. For many centuries, add-on salt was a rarity unless you were rich enough to pay the exorbitant price it commanded. There was even a saying, “below the salt”, referring to the servants in a posh medieval household who dined at the bottom end of a long table whose social boundary was marked by a bowl of salt. (The saying is also the title of an excellent Steeleye Span LP from 1972, whose cover depicts this salty social divide, if you’re interested.)

Anyway, research has since taught me that our natural salt supplies were set aside by thoughtful dinosaurs 220 million years ago for the use of a forthcoming race of bipedal apes with a taste for fish and chips. Or perhaps I’ve misinterpreted the geohistory… Whatever, non-sea-salt was laid down during the Triassic period, when the future British Isles were near the equator and consisted of low-lying basins periodically inundated by shallow, salty seas. These waters evaporated in the arid climate, leaving behind rich deposits of halite (rock salt) nestled among the Mercian Mudstones. These beds, found primarily in the Cheshire Basin and the Worcestershire Midlands, were then buried under hundreds of metres of silt and clay by those industrious and thoughtful dinosaurs. Again, I’ll need to recheck the facts here...

A ridiculously long time later, groundwater permeated the buried salt beds, creating natural brine springs where the mineral rose to the surface through artesian pressure or natural fault lines in the rocks. In Droitwich, the brine is highly concentrated, containing around 0.25 kg of salt per litre – ten times as salty as seawater and comparable to the Dead Sea. In the British Isles, there is evidence of salt pans dating to 3766–3647 BC being worked in Yorkshire. By the Iron Age (800 BC to the first century AD), salt production had become a sophisticated industry involving the evaporation of seawater or inland brine in pottery vessels, a technique known as briquetage. These vessels evaporated the salty water over open hearths and also acted as moulds to create standard-sized salt cakes for transport.

The Roman invasion in 43 AD transformed British salt into a strategic military asset. The Romans required vast quantities of the stuff for meat preservation, seasoning, and maintaining livestock. Salt sprinkled a couple of words into the language: salarium (salary), originally referring to the allowance provided to soldiers to purchase salt; and salad, originating from the Romans’ habit of salting their leafy greens. (Note: The folk etymology that claims “soldier” derives from sal dare (to give salt) is tempting, but false. Soldier comes from “solidus”, a gold coin.)

The Romans established salt-working settlements at Condate (Northwich), Salinae (Middlewich), and another Salinae (Droitwich). These sites used lead salt pans, consigning the briquetage technique to history. Excavations in Droitwich have revealed timber-lined brine tanks, wells, and remnants of the cranes or winches used to lift brine from the pits.

With the Roman departure from Britain in 410 AD, salt production eventually shifted to the Anglo-Saxons. Droitwich was known as Saltwic, and the industry was the prime financial seasoning of the Mercian economy. Production was strictly regulated, with the King of Mercia granting salt rights to powerful nobles and religious institutions (including the abbeys at Pershore and Worcester) in exchange for political support.

The 1086 Domesday Book drools over the salty riches of the so-called Domesday Wiches: Middlewich, Nantwich, Northwich, and Droitwich. In the latter, five brine wells were in operation, producing over 1,000 tons of salt annually. William the Conqueror held the largest share, following the smash-and-grab approach to ownership that despots have taken ever since. The salt industry in Cheshire did less well initially, in the aftermath of the “Harrying of the North” in 1070, in which William’s thugs had raped, pillaged, and burned the land, salting the earth for good measure to make sure nothing could grow.

In 1215, King John granted Droitwich the right to its own council and handed over his salt interests for an annual fee of £100 (around £165k today). This established a town monopoly that enabled production to reach 1,500 tons by 1400 AD.

Rock ‘n’ salt

The late-17th century saw the most significant technological change since the Romans’ metal pans. British salt had always been produced via the open-pan evaporation of brine or seawater, but in 1670, while searching for coal in the grounds of Marbury Hall north of Northwich, employees of the Smith-Barry family accidentally discovered a bed of rock salt. The mined mineral was initially used as salt licks for cattle or to strengthen weak brine to create white table salt. The opening of the River Weaver navigation in the 1720s enabled the salt to be transported to Liverpool, and it was exported ports as far away as Australia. Wood-fired furnaces were replaced by coal-fired ones, which could withstand the higher temperatures required for large-scale industrial boiling.

Because everyone is addicted to salt, it became an obvious target for taxation. In 1693, William III implemented a salt tax in England to fund wars, doubling it in 1696. The tax, unsurprisingly, was reviled and led to a black market for the white stuff. Smugglers transported the contraband condiment along old packhorse routes and a track called the Salt Way, often using the more remote and difficult sections of the network.

The transporters of illicit salt fabricated ghost stories to deter interference. At Hadleigh Castle, phantoms such as the White Lady and Black Man were said to appear just before a shipment arrived, and the legend of a ghostly drummer at Hurstmonceaux Castle in Sussex is believed to have originated with smugglers using phosphorus to scare off the salt police.

The British salt tax legacy extended to India, beginning in the 1760s when the East India Company took control of salt production. Officials established the Inland Customs Line, which included the Great Hedge of India. This 2,500-mile barrier of thorns was a customs border, patrolled to prevent salt from entering British-controlled territory from regions with lower prices. With these routes blocked, the population was forced to buy salt exclusively from government sources at the taxed rate.

The tax increased by a salt-in-the-eye-watering 900% over fifteen years in the late nineteenth century. This made the condiment too expensive for many and contributed to the death of six million people during the 1876–1878 famine. After devastating crop failures, people were unable to buy grain because their money had been drained by the salt tax. The administration refused to lower the tax during the crisis, prioritising the steady flow of revenue over the survival of the population. This meant that even if grain was physically present in a market, the people were too impoverished by the salt monopoly to buy it.

The tax became a symbol of colonial rule and a focus for resistance. In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led a 240-mile march to Dandi on the Arabian Sea in the Navsari district of Gujarat, western India. By gathering evaporated salt from shallow pools, the marchers broke the law forbidding Indians from gathering their own, and 60,000 were arrested. Nevertheless, this act of civil disobedience challenged the monopoly and strengthened the movement for independence, which finally came in 1947.

Meanwhile, in 1844, a major rock salt deposit was discovered in Winsford, Cheshire, by prospectors who, once again, had been searching for coal. The Winsford Rock Salt Mine is Britain’s oldest working mine today. The 19th-century industry was led by wealthy businessmen such as John Corbett, self-proclaimed Salt King, whose Droitwich works were grinding out 120,000 tons annually by 1872. Corbett used his wealth to transform Droitwich into a fashionable brine-bath spa resort.

Shortcuts, as ever, eventually produced problems. Mining rock salt was laborious and costly, whereas wild brine pumping – the process of flooding rock salt mines with fresh water to create brine, then pumping it to the surface – eventually ate away at the rock salt pillars, causing catastrophic subsidence. Entire streets in Northwich sank, and lakes known as flashes formed in the sink-holes. The Cheshire Brine Subsidence Compensation Board was formed in 1891 to manage the environmental damage.

The flashes were not economically viable, as the water was contaminated with soil and agricultural run-off; but there was an upside. The pools supported halophytic (salt-tolerant) plants and estuary birds, creating inland salt marshes. Several hectares of this habitat survive as nature reserves at Sandbach Flashes (Sandbach, Cheshire), Neumann’s Flash and Ashton’s Flash (Northwich, Cheshire), and Droitwich Community Woods (Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire).

Salty folklore, customs, and superstition

In British and Irish folklore, salt is a powerful deterrent against witches, fairies, and evil spirits. Witches are unable to eat anything salted. In the days before Health & Safety, to protect a newborn from abduction by fairies, salt was placed in the infant’s mouth (precipitating a lifetime’s addiction to crisps). Carrying a concealed packet of salt or putting salt in a left boot brings good fortune. Bringing salt to someone’s house bestows good luck, too, a belief that lingers in Scottish first-footing traditions. However, if you borrow salt from a neighbour, you must never give salt back - the neighbour has to borrow it from you in return. The folklore here hinges on a semantic argument.

One of the most enduring superstitions is that spilling salt brings bad luck. To pacify the fickle spirits presiding over such minor calamities, a pinch of the stuff must be thrown over the left shoulder – the “sinister” side, where the Devil lurks. A well-aimed toss deposits the salt in his eye, hence the saying “that’s salt in the eye”, signifying the thwarting of an endeavour. In Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, Judas Iscariot has knocked over a salt cellar, inviting the evil that follows. A prayer would have been in order here - folklore assures us that if you offer prayers in the vicinity of salt, they will always be answered. I don’t think a bag of crisps counts.

In Droitwich, the salt industry owes its continuation to the Miracle of Saint Richard of Chichester (aka Richard de la Wyche). When the brine springs dried up in the mid-thirteenth century, Richard blessed the pits, causing the salty water to flow again. He has since been the patron saint of Droitwich and salt-workers. Annual thanksgiving ceremonies have been held in Droitwich and Nantwich since those days, with residents decorating the brine springs with green boughs and flowers. In Droitwich, the ritual commemorates Saint Richard’s blessing of the springs, while in Nantwich, the celebration centres on the town’s most ancient salt pit, the Old Biot.

In the King-Lear-alike English fairy tale Cap-o’-Rushes (first published in 1890), a rich father asks his three daughters to quantify their love. The eldest declares she loves him as much as her life, the second says she loves him as much as the world, and the youngest says she loves him as much as meat needs salt. Outraged by this perceived slight, the father banishes the youngest daughter, who disguises herself in a cloak of reeds and becomes a servant called Cap-o-Rushes.

The girl wins the heart of her master’s son, and they eventually marry. At the wedding feast, to which Cap-o-Rushes’ father is invited, all the food is served without salt. This tasteless feast moves her father to tears as he finally grasps the truth of his daughter’s words.

During the biblical destruction of the city of Sodom, Lot and his family were commanded by angels to flee and never look back. While Lot obeyed, his wife turned to gaze at the burning city and was transformed into a pillar of salt for her troubles. Legend suggests this was a consequence of her earlier stinginess – when Lot asked her to provide salt for their angelic guests, she reportedly lied, saying she had none. She then visited her neighbours to borrow the seasoning, solely as a ruse to gossip about the angels’ house call. You don’t mess with angels, clearly.

Salt features in many purification/anti-evil ceremonies, apparently grounded in superstition, but probably stemming from the simple fact that salt preserves things and stops them from rotting. Ergo, it protects. This tree of superstition has several branches, including Shinto rituals, where sumo wrestlers throw salt into the ring to drive away evil spirits before a match. Superstitious folk worldwide sprinkle it across doorways and windowsills to create a protective barrier against misfortune. Salt is often added to holy water in Christian rites or used in house-blessing ceremonies to neutralise negative energy, demons, Reform Party canvassers, etc.

Back with Steeleye Span, the expression “below the salt” commemorates medieval dining etiquette. A large salt cellar, or “master salt”, was placed in the middle of the long table as a social boundary. The hosts and their guests sat ‘above’ the salt at the head of the table, while those of lower status, such as servants and commoners, sat ‘below’ at the far end. This physical divide reflected the mineral’s high cost, and “below the salt” became a metaphor for lower social standing.

Other expressions include salt of the earth for a good, honest, reliable person, a phrase first recorded in the Bible when Jesus uses it to describe his disciples. Modern extraction – saviour of fish and chips

In the 20th century, the salt industry was revolutionised by vacuum evaporation. The process was adapted from the sugar industry and involves boiling brine in closed vessels under a partial vacuum to lower the boiling point and save fuel. The New Cheshire Salt Works at Wincham used an Art Deco-style evaporator with striped wood panelling and brass fittings to produce its high-purity pharmaceutical salt. But it’s the Winsford Rock Salt Mine that remains the UK’s largest producer, primarily supplying salt for road de-icing. The mine stretches 5km east to west and employs modern mining machinery rather than the traditional explosives. The vast void left by extraction – the size of 700 football pitches – is used as a secure storage facility called DeepStore. It houses millions of national records, including those of The National Archives, as the mine’s constant 15°C temperature and 55% humidity provide a perfect environment free from light, pests, and flooding.

The average adult in Britain consumes around 3.1 kilograms of salt per year, exceeding the government’s recommended maximum of 2.2 kilograms (6 grams per day). Roughly 70% of the population exceeds the healthy guidelines, and much of the intake comes from processed foods such as bread, cheese, crisps, and ready meals rather than from table salt.

For comparison, an average adult in Ireland, the USA, and Australia consumes roughly 3.5, 3.1, and 3.3 kilograms per year, respectively. The EU average is similar, 3-point-something. Ergo, we’re all eating too much of the stuff.

So, my dining partner was correct in her complaint after all. But you can take that comment with a pinch of salt…

The humble dove plays a leading role in Western mythology. This is the bird whose behaviour revealed to Noah that the 40-day Flood was over and he could finally park his ark and unleash his unruly cargo of wildlife. But there’s a key question that few people have asked before: was Noah’s bird a wild dove or a domesticated pigeon? Clutching an olive twig in my beak, I set out to discover the answer.

It’s no secret that the ubiquitous town pigeon is an urban incarnation of the rock dove (Columba livia). This bird, indigenous to Southern Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, supplies the genetic roots of all the human-bred ‘fancy pigeons’, from the fan-tailed dove to the racing pigeon. As with budgies and canaries, breeders have isolated the birds’ genes to create types that look like distinct species. But they’re all Columba livia at heart, including the white one used as a peace symbol.

But long before the dove became a universal icon of harmony, a sacred emblem in Christian art, and a scavenger of fast food in cities, it was cooing in the pigeon lofts of the ancient Middle East. People in the ancient Near East domesticated Columba livia around 4,000 years ago (primarily for meat and eggs). When Mesopotamian storytellers needed a reliable messenger in their story of a water-world in search of dry land, they turned to the familiar pigeon, its tameness and homing instincts making it the perfect animal for the job. The bird’s behaviour in the story of the Great Flood mirrors its natural behaviour: the rock dove, as its name suggests, roosts in rocky places, including cliffs and mountainsides. As the legendary deluge waters receded, rocky outcrops were the first features to raise their heads from the flood, offering sanctuary for the doves. (Okay – in the event of a receding flood, any bird would have headed for whatever dry land was available, but let’s give the mythology writers the benefit of the doubt.)

But here’s the thing that has always nagged at me when thinking of these stories. Was Noah’s dove – or the pre-Bible Mesopotamian bird – a domesticated pigeon? For me, the story pivots on this detail. If the bird-with-the-olive-branch-in-its-beak was a wild dove, the story is about the natural world bringing humanity the good news (forgetting the role of irate deities for the moment). But if the bird was a domesticated bird, the story is one of a human-bred homing pigeon bringing the news. In other words, humans were saved by something they had engineered.

Beyond the flood…

The legend of the Great Flood is around 4,000 years old, originating in ancient Mesopotamia. The story first appeared in a Sumerian poem known as the Eridu Genesis, composed around 2300 BC. It was later adapted in the Old Babylonian Atra-Hasis epic, which survives on tablets from around 1640 BC. A variation of the story was used in the Epic of Gilgamesh, compiled some 400 years later. The biblical version in the Book of Genesis, compiled around 500–600 BC during the exile of the Jews in Babylon, drew on these earlier sources.

So, was the bird already domesticated 4,000 years ago when the mythology was taking shape? It’s not entirely clear. A research paper published in May 2026 finds evidence for pigeon domestication 3,350 years ago, noting that previous conclusive evidence of domestic pigeons from Hellenistic Greece dated back just 2,300 years. The new study, looking at Late Bronze Age pigeon bones from Hala Sultan Tekke in Cyprus, used stable isotope analysis to examine chemical signatures in the birds’ bones. The researchers found that the doves’ diet was similar to that of their human neighbours, indicating that rock doves lived alongside people in ancient Cyprus and were probably fed by them, confirming that a domesticated relationship existed a thousand years earlier than previously proven. There is also evidence that doves were involved in human rituals in Iraq 4,000 years ago, so I’ll add that to my birdseed-dispenser of evidence, too.

Cynics might suggest that the pigeons were merely stealing grain from the Cypriots, but let’s ignore that possibility for the moment, as the most pertinent takeaway here is that these “earliest” domesticated doves are of a similar age to the one in the original Great Flood story. The results from the Cyprus study suggest that the human-dove relationship moved beyond predator and prey around that stubborn 4,000-year mark (if we stretch it back just a little to match the Iraqi evidence). Archaeologists found burnt and buried rock dove bones in ritual spaces, and previous excavations at the Cyprus site have unearthed a pigeon inside a tomb, suggesting a significant cultural role.

This is all frustratingly close to the date of the bird in the Mesopotamian Flood story, but I was haunted by the fact that the earliest surviving version of that tale probably postdated the original by several decades, if not centuries. And it was at this point that I realised I was actively embracing confirmation bias. I wanted the pigeon in the Great Flood story to be a domesticated bird, not a wild rock dove.

That was very unscientific of me, I know, but off I went in search of further evidence, and I found it. In a 2023 paper by Hernández-Alonso et al., Redefining the Evolutionary History of the Rock Dove, Columba livia, Using Whole Genome Sequences, the authors state,

Archaeological evidence suggests that the rock dove was first domesticated between 3,000 and 10,000 years ago in either the Mediterranean Basin or in the Fertile Crescent alongside the Neolithic Revolution. It has been argued that rock doves were probably domesticated several times and in different places spanning their natural distribution range, possibly over a period of thousands of years.

I’ll take the 10,000, thank you very much. And if I were being even more opportunistic and manipulative with the evidence, I would harp on about how the Neanderthals were eating pigeons 67,000 years ago. Yes, these were probably wild birds, but it’s not beyond reason that our canny hominid cousins had worked out that the birds could be tamed and housed.

All bias aside, whether any of these dates constitute true domestication is a matter of debate. Nevertheless, to avoid sitting on the fence, I am nailing my Columba livia colours to Noah’s mast and declaring that the bird in the story of the Flood was indeed a domesticated town pigeon. This is reflected in the dozens of depictions of Noah’s dove in which the bird is always white – ergo, domesticated. It wasn’t a wild dove but a human-engineered pigeon that saved the day.

And that could have been the end of the article; but the subject is far too interesting.

A quick recap of the dove’s adventures during the Flood

In the oldest known account of the dove’s escapades, Enlil, king of the gods, decides to destroy humanity because noisy humans have disrupted his divine sleep. The god of wisdom and water, Enki (Ea in the Gilgamesh version), instructs a chosen survivor – Atra-Hasis in the older version, and Utnapishtim in Gilgamesh – to build a large, seaworthy vessel to carry pairs of all the world’s terrestrial animals.

The use of birds as a practical navigation tool was a common maritime technique in antiquity. Ancient sailors, lacking modern compasses, would release birds to determine whether land was nearby. If the bird didn’t return, it must have found a place to perch. In Gilgamesh, Utnapishtim employs this technique once the storm has passed and his vessel has landed on Mount Nimush (thought to be Pira Magrun in Iraq). Utnapishtim releases a dove first, but it finds no perch and returns to the ship. Next, a swallow is released, but, finding no perch, it returns. A raven is then sent out, and it doesn’t return, indicating that it has found safe harbour.

When the flood narrative was incorporated into the Hebrew book of Genesis, the core structure of the Mesopotamian story remained intact, but with key details changed. The flood is sent by Jahweh as a moral judgment on human corruption, rather than an irritable reaction to an interrupted nap. After the ark rests on Mount Ararat, Noah releases birds to look for habitable land. He sends a raven first, but it just flies back and forth. Noah then sends the dove, which finds no perch and returns. Seven days later, he releases the dove again, and it returns in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf in its beak. This is evidence that vegetation is growing and life is regenerating. After another seven days, the dove is released a third time and does not return, showing that the earth is fully habitable.

Early Christian art regularly depicted Noah with the dove, transforming the bird into a symbol of peace, divine reconciliation, and physical/spiritual rebirth. This biblical tale is the origin of the secular symbol of the dove-with-olive-branch as a representation of peace.

The dove’s adventures after the Flood…

The notion of the dove as a good-news messenger maps directly onto its use as a symbol of the Holy Spirit in Christian iconography. This artistic motif was anchored in the account of Jesus’ baptism in the New Testament (Luke 3:22), where the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove. Artists stuck with this imagery, and when the Angel Gabriel springs his alarming news on the Virgin Mary at the Annunciation, as it is coyly termed, artistic representations usually feature a white dove.

During the Byzantine era, the white dove was further cemented as a symbol of the Trinity. By the High Middle Ages, it had come to represent divine inspiration in general: artists frequently depicted a white dove hovering at the ear of prominent theologians, such as Pope Gregory the Great or Thomas Aquinas, helping them pen their divine writings like an avian ChatGPT. This period also saw the development of the “Throne of Grace” iconography, a trinitarian composition in which God the Father sits on a throne, holding Jesus the Son on the Cross, while the Holy Spirit’s dove hovers above or between the two figures.

Renaissance artists such as Piero della Francesca and Leonardo da Vinci painted the dove with anatomical precision, often using foreshortening to make the bird appear to be flying out of the canvas. The motif reached its theatrical peak during the Baroque period, with artists using light as a physical medium and the dove becoming the central focus of ambitious church installations, epitomised by Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Cathedra Petri (Chair of Saint Peter) in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome. This gilded bronze monument centres on an alabaster stained-glass window, at the centre of which, surrounded by natural light and sculpted angels, flies a dove, lit by the sun and representing the pinnacle of two millennia of artistic history.

The dove has since become an international symbol of peace (usually holding an olive sprig). In political usage, it is the opposite of hawk, the very embodiment of concord, amity and reconciliation.

What about the turtle dove?

Rock dove symbolism should not be, but often is, confused with turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) symbolism. The latter bird is associated with Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and also with the Roman goddess Fides, who symbolises trust and fidelity. Whenever doves occur in poetry, folk song, and wedding/Valentine’s imagery in the context of love and symbols thereof, it is the turtle dove which is being referred to. But in the contexts just mentioned, the species are confused, with symbolic lovebirds described or illustrated as snow-white doves. This conflation irritates me; but, in fairness, the biblical word for Noah’s bird was yonah, a generic word for a dove/pigeon. In other words, the ancient texts aren’t that bothered; although elsewhere, including in the Song of Solomon, the tor, turtle dove, is referred to specifically as a harbinger of spring (being the only migratory pigeon in the region).

In their wonderful encyclopaedia Birds Britannica, Mark Cocker and Richard Mabey point out that the rock dove, in the guise of the town pigeon, is the only wild bird many people will have touched. That is an apt symbol for a creature that has been in human hands for, let’s say, for the sake of argument, 10,000 years. Charles Darwin used this bird as the basis for his investigations into evolution, and he estimated that there were 228 varieties of fancy pigeon derived from rock doves in his day. Indeed, Darwin had a collection of the birds, hence George Bernard Shaw’s description of him as “an intelligent and industrious pigeon fancier”.

However, when Cocker and Mabey describe the rock dove as “An ancient sign of fertility sacred to the Sumerians and Hebrews”, implicating them as Aphrodite’s chariot-pullers, they are surely confusing the species with the turtle dove. Nevertheless, they assist my confirmation bias when they assert that the rock dove was domesticated as early as 4500 BC, making it a contender – along with the red jungle fowl, aka the chicken – as the world’s earliest domesticated bird.

During the medieval period, there were an estimated 26,000 dovecotes in Britain, the largest concentration in the world. It wasn’t just about meat and eggs, as the feathers were used as stuffing for pillows and furniture, and the birds’ droppings were used as fertiliser and for softening leather in the tanning industry. Cocker and Mabey note with grim irony that the several tonnes of harvested pigeon droppings were also a source of potassium nitrate, which was used to make gunpowder. So much for the emblem of peace.

Dovecote mania tailed off in the eighteenth century. Today, despite attempts to deter pigeons from roosting and feeding in cities, there are still an estimated quarter of a million pairs in British and Irish urban spaces. In addition, pigeon fanciers and racing-pigeon aficionados maintain crowded pigeon lofts, while the story of carrier pigeons (which are still our humble Columba livia) is rich enough to warrant a separate article. Meanwhile, the wild rock dove has become elusive, with many colonies thought to be hybridised rock dove/town pigeon birds. Does it matter? Not as long as those wild birds remain genetically robust, I would suggest.

The species is certainly doing better than the poor turtle dove, which is increasingly endangered after being routinely gunned down during its migration across Mediterranean countries.

I’m 500 words over my original self-imposed word limit. There’s a lot more to say, but I’ll leave it at that for the time being. The answer to my thesis question is that Noah’s dove was, indeed, a domesticated bird. Feral pigeons have been with us forever, and they are not likely to leave our dynamic story anytime soon.

I first read the name Joseph Taylor in the sleeve notes of the folk albums I listened to when first bitten by the traditional music bug in the mid-1970s. Taylor was apparently the quintessential folk singer, the voice of the timeless English peasantry, his decorative vocal style presenting a time tunnel back to ancient days when people sat around and sang… well… folk songs. It all sounded good to me, music, theory, and all.

What I didn’t realise for many a decade was that the whole folk-song continuum idea was a myth, or, at best, an illusion, a sleight-of-hand trick played by early twentieth-century folk song collectors in search of some national culture.

Not that this takes anything away from the excellence of Taylor’s singing and his melodious repertoire. It’s just that he wasn’t singing ancient songs, he moved up the career ladder, and he was musically literate. In other words, he was none of the things ye olde folksinger is supposed to be.

Joseph Taylor of Saxby-all-Saints, Lincolnshire, was one of the first English ‘traditional’ singers to be recorded (on wax cylinders) and the very first to be recorded commercially. His performances bridge the nineteenth-century oral music of rural England, the formalised concert halls of the Edwardian era, and the age of music-as-mass-entertainment. However, Taylor’s narrative is not just a simple story of musical preservation - it takes in issues of class mobility, selection bias, and the uncomfortable dynamics of cultural appropriation.

Taylor was born on 10 December 1833 in Binbrook, Lincolnshire, the son of James Taylor and Mary Ann Smith, and one of eleven children. Despite their lack of formal education (the National School did not open until Taylor was ten), the family was interested in and actively involved in the music scene. Joseph was happy to walk the twenty-mile round trip to Grimsby to attend concerts – and pay to listen.

In his early twenties, Taylor – an agricultural labourer at this point, like most of the residents of Lincolnshire – was sentenced to six months in prison at Binbrook after feeding a farmer’s horses with wheat intended for market (a crime that sounds to modern ears more like an act of charity). This stint behind bars was his only real brush with hardship and the tribulations of the more desperate rural poor.

The Eureka! moment in Taylor’s musical development came after he encountered travelling people who frequently unhitched their caravans in the area around Binbrook and Brigg. Around 1850, a group of gipsies made camp at the local chalk pits. Drawn by their siren-like singing, Taylor at first watched them from a distance, perching on a gate to listen to and learn their songs. This, you could argue, was the first step in a story of appropriation, with Taylor, a member of the settled rural community, captivated by the travellers’ distinct, more exotic traditions, and then using their musical magic to spice up his repertoire.

After realising the young music lover was essentially harmless, the King of the Binbrook gipsies invited Taylor into his inner sanctum. Music, as it so often does, acted as a leveller in an otherwise awkward encounter, and Taylor was received as an honoured guest, sitting by the campfire and learning the travellers’ “ballets”. It was during these sessions that he learned Brigg Fair, the song that would become his most celebrated contribution to the English folk canon (and make other people famous in the process).

This transmission of oral traditions across social divides is a common musical journey. The same pathway was involved when African-rooted Black blues was embraced by radio-friendly white singers, and when the mishmash of British and Irish-derived rural American folk music became the slick Country and Americana that sells millions today.

In 1856, armed with a song repertoire considerably enhanced by the travellers’ music, Joseph Taylor married Eliza Hill and moved to Saxby-all-Saints. Here, he progressed from general labouring into more skilled and managerial roles. He studied arboriculture, focusing on woodland management, and became a woodman and carpenter for the Hope-Barton Estate. By 1891, he had been promoted to Estate Foreman and was also the Parish Clerk in Saxby. He eventually became the bailiff for a large estate encompassing two villages and several farms.

This shift from labourer to bailiff is crucial to understanding Taylor’s identity and its implications for his musical legacy. He was no longer a member of the disenfranchised rural poor but had become part of the yeoman class, a respected and relatively well-to-do member of the community. His granddaughter and biographer, E. Marion Hudson, hated the idea that he might be viewed by posterity as a “country bumpkin”, presenting him to her readers as a highly literate, respected and responsible man. This is further evidenced by his forty-five years of service in the Saxby-all-Saints church choir, an unorthodox background for a folk singer in the eyes of early twentieth-century collectors, who were keen on the idea of the illiterate rural performer as the source of “pure” and “unspoiled” tradition (which is the wildest of wild goose chases, on a par with fishing for the Loch Ness Monster).

It even poses the ultimately pointless question – was the worldly, professional, musically literate Joseph Taylor even a folk singer, or was he more a song stylist, a proto-crooner?

Percy Grainger: waxing lyrical

The modern awareness of Joseph Taylor is due entirely to his meeting with the composer Percy Grainger. Grainger had encountered Taylor at the North Lincolnshire Musical Competition in Brigg in 1905 – Taylor had entered the competition reluctantly, under pressure from his admirers, and he won first prize in the folk song class with his rendition of Creeping Jane. Grainger was impressed with Taylor’s voice, which he described as a “flowing, ringing tenor”.

Grainger’s approach to collecting was revolutionary, combining standard manual transcriptions with Edison wax-cylinder phonograph recordings. He returned to Brigg in 1906 to record Taylor and other singers, capturing the nuances of their performances with a level of detail previously unachievable. Grainger’s transcriptions of Taylor’s singing are meticulous, documenting every “twiddle”, “bleat”, and “ornament” (Percy’s words) that Taylor used to embellish his melodies. Grainger believed his man sang with a “purer” folk style than any other singer he had heard, relying more on vocal decoration than on the narrative drama of the lyrics. What he may have underestimated was Taylor’s studied approach to stylisation, and, as a further disservice, those meticulous transcriptions set in stone what were, in reality, spontaneous flourishes and improvisations. A musical improvisation captured on paper is like the movement of a wild animal captured in a taxidermist’s studio. And as for Grainger’s opinion on Taylor’s “pure” style, it is an example of choosing something that suits your thesis and ignoring all the other evidence. The core repertoire of the folk song revival is a broader example of this tendency.

In 1908, Grainger arranged for Taylor – now 75 – to travel to London to record for the Gramophone Company. On the 9th and 11th of July, the Saxby man recorded nine songs, which were released as a set of His Master’s Voice discs titled Percy Grainger’s Collection of English Folk-Songs sung by Genuine Peasant Performers. This was the first time an English traditional singer had been recorded for the commercial market. While in London, Taylor was a guest of honour at the Queen’s Hall for a performance of Frederick Delius’s English Rhapsody, an orchestral setting of the Lincolnshire singer’s gipsy-derived song Brigg Fair. Delius had been introduced to the melody by Grainger rather than Taylor. A well-travelled anecdote relates that when the orchestra began to play the tune, Taylor stood up and sang along. More sober accounts suggest he stayed seated and merely hummed the tune.

Taylor didn’t gain anything from his recordings financially, apart from a freebie trip and, I hope, some slap-up lunches; but as a guest of honour, he was being acknowledged in one of the world’s great metropolitan concert halls by members of the musical elite. His reaction was reportedly one of humble recognition rather than awe, but he clearly understood the value of the music he had passed on. This groundedness was a hallmark of his character – Grainger described him as “courteous, genial”, and a “typical English countryman”.

For the record, Brigg Fair was the tip of the iceberg. The following is a list of the songs recorded by or noted from Joseph Taylor between 1905 and 1908. Many of them appeared on commercial discs in 1908 and on the 1972 album Unto Brigg Fair.

Joseph Taylor knew and sang music other than these traditional numbers. But Grainger and the other English folk song collectors were not interested in parlour ballads, church songs, or Music Hall ditties. They mined a specific part of the repertoire, the ‘folk’ stuff, and ignored the rest, creating the illusion that the oral folk tradition consisted primarily of ‘traditional’ songs.

Before dwelling on that point, it’s time to say goodbye to our genial host. On 3 May 1910, Joseph Taylor was driving a horse and trap from Saxby to Brigg when a small animal ran across the road. The horse reared, and Taylor was thrown from the vehicle. Despite bruises and a painful shoulder, the 76-year-old continued on his ten-mile round trip. After reaching home, he walked to a field to drive cows back to their shed. It was only after these exertions that he began to complain of severe pains in the pit of his stomach. He retired to bed, and a doctor was summoned from nearby Barton, but Taylor died of internal injuries (possibly a heart attack) before medical assistance arrived. He was buried in the churchyard of All Saints in Saxby, alongside his wife, Eliza, who had passed away in November 1909.

The more troubling side of the story: folk-song as theft

The folk song movement of the early twentieth century was driven by well-educated, middle-class collectors, motivated by a sense of being on an antiquarian mission to save cultural artefacts. They viewed folk music as an idiom that could revitalise English classical music and provide a sense of cultural heritage in a country they felt had been debased and denuded by urbanisation. This process of establishing a national English music involved appropriation. Collectors such as Percy Grainger and Frederick Delius took songs from the rural working class, harmonised them in accordance with Western classical traditions, and presented them to middle-class audiences in concert halls. Grainger was the only collector of his generation who took a genuine interest in the people behind the songs, and there is evidence that he assisted some of his sources financially. But on the whole, the singers were left in poverty or died in workhouses, while the collectors gained professional prestige and arrangement royalties.

However, Joseph Taylor fails to fit the mould. He lacks the typical profile of the exploited folk singer, as his status as a bailiff and estate foreman gave him a level of social and economic agency that most other traditional singers lacked. He was not a passive subject being “preserved” by Grainger but a willing and intelligent collaborator, a song-stylist who was proud of his skills and repertoire.

When Grainger arranged for Taylor to record in London in 1908, there was no royalty contract. The Gramophone Company presented Taylor with a set of his own discs and a player so that he could listen to the recordings at home, and that was his only payment. The company took all the money from sales of the records.

Regardless of how he may have judged himself, Joseph Taylor was an unpaid “peasant performer” as far as the record label was concerned. His granddaughter’s insistence that he was not a “country bumpkin” shows that the Taylor family was aware of how he might be perceived and was active in trying to shape his public image. Meanwhile, by being the first to capture these songs in written scores and commercial recordings, Grainger effectively became the gatekeeper of this musical heritage, ensuring that a portion of the revenue from any subsequent performance would go to him.

The notion of traditional material has presented a copyright loophole ever since, and many people have cynically jumped through. In the 1960s, folk revival singers were happy to list “traditional” as the source of their material, meaning they did not copyright their arrangements. This resulted in some high-profile appropriations, including Led Zeppelin’s use of (and subsequent copyrighting of) Bert Jansch’s guitar part for the folk song Blackwaterside. The song and tune might have been traditional (Bert learned them from Anne Briggs), but the beautiful guitar composition was 100% Jansch. Next time you listen to Zeppelin’s Black Mountainside, bear that in mind. And then there was that celebrated piece of legal thievery, Paul Simon’s “borrowing” of Martin Carthy’s distinctive arrangement of Scarborough Fair.

Here’s the rub

The prestige of Taylor’s recordings was used to sell a romanticised image of the English peasant to an urban audience, commodifying the cultural identity of folksingers. The corpus of English folksong was also used to build a “national music” in a country that, to the scorn of its neighbours, had appeared to have none. (This phenomenon is complex and interesting enough to warrant a separate article, but waves of nationalism, when they sweep over powerful countries such as England, tend to manifest in colonialism, flag-waving and jingoism. For the underdog nations, nationalism is expressed through individuality and uniqueness – i.e., folk music and traditions. This is why the folk music and dance of Ireland and Scotland, for example, are part of the image those countries are happy to project to the world, while England’s equivalents are not headline items in its tourist brochures.)

Anyway, the likes of Percy Grainger, Cecil Sharp, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Maude Karpeles, and other early 20th-century folksong collectors thought they were saving a dying culture from natural demise in the face of social change and the destructive influence of modern industrial life (although urban folk song eventually proved to be as rich a source for collectors as the fields and villages). They believed that without their intervention, these songs would vanish, and to a large extent, they were correct. There is little doubt that 99.9% of the folk music that ever existed in Britain arose, became popular, and disappeared before anyone had thought to capture it. You could therefore argue that the service the collectors provided to the nation outweighed the individual rights of the singers.

But in many ways, the collectors were fooling themselves (and us), actively inventing a still-widespread notion of what this music was. Ask anyone who has ever thought about folk music, and they will probably tell you that it is a continuum, an art form passed down orally through the generations. In reality, the source singers’ repertoires consisted of songs composed in their lifetimes, with a few from their parents’ and grandparents’ generations, along with church songs, music hall pieces, printed broadside ballads, and Victorian parlour ballads. The older stuff – anything pre-late-eighteenth century – is rare in songs collected from singers. In this respect, men like Joseph Taylor were little different from modern music aficionados – most of the songs we know are from our lifetimes, or, in the case of perennial “classics”, the few decades preceding our birth. It was exactly the same for “traditional” singers.

However, this was not the narrative the collectors were seeking to relay. They sought a time tunnel back into the musical past, whereas all they really got were a bunch of songs the old guy happened to know. Yes, the source singers learned their repertoires primarily through oral transmission; yes, the tunes often had older antecedents; but the songs were just an accumulation of what they had learned over their lifetimes. That is, the pop music of the day, primarily, and not an ancient well of music passed down quietly like the secret whereabouts of the Holy Grail in a Dan Brown book.

So, in many ways, there is no such thing as traditional folk music. There was a traditional oral folk tradition, an environment in which songs were learned and sung, but the tradition is the process, not the music itself.

Meanwhile, song appropriation has bequeathed a complex legacy. While the voice of Joseph Taylor was saved for posterity, it was under terms that denied him agency and financial benefit. The songs were essentially removed from the community and handed over to the musical establishment, where they were used to build composers’ careers and record labels’ catalogues.

As historians, musicians, writers, whatever, the least we can do when engaging with this old music is to doff our caps to the sources, the Joseph Taylors.

1. A. Scotland. The Treaty of Northampton recognised Robert the Bruce as King of Scotland. Thus ended the First War of Scottish Independence, which England had started by invading its neighbour in 1296. The agreement granted Scotland full independence and recognised the Bruce lineage as rightful monarchs. After a Trumpian demand for £20,000 (about 18 million in today’s money), the English Crown also accepted the border established during Alexander III’s reign 50 years earlier. Wales had lost its independence in 1282. The 1603 surrender of Hugh O’Neill at the end of the Nine Years’ War marked the first time the entire island of Ireland had fallen to the English.

2. C. The Poll Tax. You can have half a point if you opted for conscription, as the French wars were also a major issue. Post-plague unrest was another factor, but it was the hated poll taxes of 1377, 1379, and 1381 that tipped the scales into revolt. These were flat-rate levies imposed on every lay person over a certain age, regardless of individual wealth, with the aim of funding the ongoing Hundred Years War against France. The first tax was one groat per head, but the 1381 version tripled that amount, a crippling financial burden on the labouring classes. Richard II was crowned in 1377, aged 10, and was first the hero and then the nemesis of the rebel leaders.

3. B. Richard Whittington. The famous legend of the impoverished orphan Richard Whittington and his rat-catching cat originated in the 17th century as a theatrical tale of rags-to-riches. The real Whittington amassed his fortune as a mercer, primarily by trading luxury fabrics such as silk and velvet to the English royal court. William Walworth (mayor 1374–1375 and 1380–1381) was the man who killed rebel leader Wat Tyler during the Peasants Revolt of previous-question fame. Gilbert Heathcote (mayor 1711) was a founder of the Bank of England and was the last Lord Mayor to ride on horseback during his inaugural procession.

4. C. A printing press. De Worde was the apprentice William Caxton, who had established England’s first printing press in 1492. Wynken inherited the business and, moving the workshop from Westminster to Fleet Street, founded the famous London printing and newspaper district. The Inns of Court evolved during the late 13th and early 14th centuries as residential hostels for legal practitioners and students, situated in London’s suburbs (King Henry III had issued a decree in 1234 prohibiting the teaching of civil law within the walls of the City of London).

5. B. California. In June 1579, Francis Drake established the short-lived settlement of New Albion, claiming the region for the English Crown during a five-week stay to repair the Golden Hind. The site is traditionally said to be near Drake’s Cove in Drakes Bay, Marin County, California. The landing was commemorated with a brass plate that remained lost until 1936… although metallurgical tests in the 1970s proved it to be a forgery. Humphrey Gilbert founded St. John’s in Newfoundland in 1583, but the settlement failed following the death of Gilbert during his return voyage. The Roanoke Island colony, off the coast of North Carolina, was abandoned in 1586 due to food shortages and conflict with local tribes, and a second group of settlers vanished mysteriously in 1590.

6. A. Archbishop of Canterbury. William Laud’s religious reforms and enforcement of high church practices infuriated his Puritan and parliamentary critics. After being impeached by the Long Parliament for treason and tyrannical governance, he was executed on Tower Hill in January 1645 following the passage of a Bill of Attainder by the House of Lords. Edward Hyde, later the Earl of Clarendon, was the primary political advisor to Charles I during the Civil Wars. In 1645, the position of Lord Privy Seal was held by Henry Danvers, the 1st Earl of Danby.

7. C. Henry Purcell. Purcell was a highly prolific writer, penning around 850 works in two decades. His death, aged 36, in 1695 was rumoured to have been caused by a chest infection arising from a chill he had caught after being locked out by his wife, in protest to his staying out late. Purcell was buried in Westminster Abbey to the sounds of the funeral music he had composed the previous year for Queen Mary II. John Dowland was an Elizabethan lutenist and composer. John Dryden served as the first official Poet Laureate from 1668 until 1689, and he collaborated with Henry Purcell on seven theatrical works.

8. C. Cotton. Richard Arkwright invented the water-powered spinning frame, a machine that significantly accelerated the production of cotton yarn. By establishing the world’s first water-powered cotton mill at Cromford, Derbyshire, he turned textile manufacturing from a cottage industry into an intensive factory system. Arkwright’s Mill is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring a museum dedicated to the Industrial Revolution, alongside shops, cafes, and creative workspaces. Abraham Darby revolutionised iron production at Coalbrookdale by using coke instead of charcoal to smelt iron ore. William Bass founded his brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in 1777, laying the groundwork for the boom phase of the industry: the global export of India Pale Ale.

9. B. The UK. The Acts of Union 1707 had merged the Kingdoms of England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1801, another Act of Union incorporated the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Belgium separated from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1830. A constitutional monarchy was established, and the nation gained formal recognition as an independent, neutral power in 1839. The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861, consolidating independent states and territories across the peninsula into a single sovereign entity under King Victor Emmanuel II.

10. A. Hong Kong. Following the First Opium War, the Qing Dynasty ceded Hong Kong Island to the United Kingdom in 1841 via the Treaty of Chuenpi. Subsequent agreements, including the 1898 Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory, granted a ninety-nine-year lease. The United Kingdom took administrative control of Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire in 1878 following the Convention of Constantinople, which allowed for British occupation in exchange for military support against Russia. British control over the Indian subcontinent transitioned from the trade-focused East India Company to direct Crown rule following the Government of India Act 1858.

11. B. George Orwell. Eric Arthur Blair adopted this pen name in 1933 to avoid embarrassing his family when his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, was published, detailing a period of living in poverty. The surname was taken from the River Orwell in Suffolk, a favourite location of the author. A.A. Milne, the author of Winnie the Pooh, was born in 1882 in Hampstead, London. H.H. Munro, born in 1870, took his name from the cup-bearer in the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a Persian poem that was hugely popular in England during the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras.

12. A. Tony Benn. After inheriting the Viscount Stansgate title in 1960, Benn campaigned for the right to remain in the House of Commons rather than being forced into the House of Lords. His efforts resulted in the Peerage Act 1963, which allowed the formal renunciation of hereditary titles for life. He later dropped the first element of his double-barrelled surname, Wedgwood-Benn. Richard John Bingham, aka Lord Lucan, the Seventh Earl of Lucan, mysteriously disappeared in 1974 following a violent incident at the family home. Anthony Eden was born on 12 June 1897 in County Durham to a family of landed gentry, where his father held the title of the fourth Baronet of Windlestone.

The Brutus legend - all at sea

According to legend, Britain was founded by a seafaring Trojan exile called Brutus, or Brut. The story was constructed by four imaginative pseudo-historians – Nennius, in his Latin Historia Brittonum (c830); Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his Latin Historia Regum Britanniae, 1136; Wace, in his Norman French Le Roman de Brut (1155); and Layamon in his late Old English/Early Middle English Brut (c1200). The latter two were written in verse, and Layamon’s is largely a translation of Wace’s. The eponymous aftershave came much later.

So, on to the legend… After the fall of Troy, which medieval chroniclers traditionally pegged to 1184 BC, Aeneas, son of the mortal Anchises and the goddess Venus (Aphrodite in Greek mythology), fled the Greek-trashed city ruins and eventually made landfall in Italy. A prophecy emerged concerning Aeneas’ great-grandson, Brutus. The seers predicted that this boy – unborn at the time – would kill his father and his mother but would eventually rise to great glory after a period of exile.

The prophecy got off to an impressive start. Brutus’ mother died during childbirth, and at the age of fifteen, the lad accidentally shot his father during a hunting trip. Banished from Italy for this double dose of family misfortune, Brutus relocated to Greece, where he discovered a population of displaced Trojans living in slavery under the Greek king Pandrasus.

Brutus assured his leading role in a yet-to-be-made Hollywood epic by organising the enslaved Trojans, leading a successful guerrilla uprising, and trashing the Greek army. Pandrasus was captured and forced to provide the victorious Trojans with ships, gold, supplies, and his own daughter, Inogen, to be Brutus’ bride.

Setting sail with a fleet of exiled Trojans, Brutus landed on a deserted island called Leogecia (possibly Lefkada in the Ionian Sea), which had a ruined temple dedicated to Diana - Artemis, in Greek mythology - goddess of the hunt. At a loose end, voyage-wise, Brutus turned to Diana for his map-reading. He performed some rituals before the altar, filled a vessel with wine and the blood of a white hind, and fell asleep to await the goddess’ divine GPS instructions.

I entered this rabbit hole with a simple question: is the Scottish Trow a local version of the more famous Norwegian Troll?

The folklore of the Orkney and Shetland archipelagos is a unique cultural intersection between Scandinavian and Scottish traditions. The traditional music here is unique; there are Selkies and Finfolk in the sea; and the Trow is omnipresent.

However, although the Trow may share some of its ancestry with the Trolls of Norwegian legend, it has evolved into something different, shaped by the unique geography, isolated history, and socio-religious climate of the Northern Isles, merging with other Scottish fairy beliefs along the way.

Nothing in this story is clear-cut, and even the word “trow” is opaque. It’s etymological roots are in Norn, an extinct North Germanic language spoken in Orkney and Shetland until the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. “Trow” is sufficiently similar to the Old Norse “Troll” for the link to be apparently clear, but there is a variant, Drow, a term that crops up in Orkney and Shetland dialects and was coined by novelist Sir Walter Scott in the nineteenth century. It might be more than a mere variant, deriving again via the Norn language from the Old Norse draugr, which is a different beastie altogether. In Norse mythology, the Draugr was the undead guardian of a burial mound – something like Tolkien’s Barrow Wights in The Lord of the Rings. Orkney and Shetland have no Norwegian-style mountains and fjords, so the Trows of the Northern Isles were reimagined as Draugr-like mound-dwellers (haugbúi), reflecting the land’s topographical and archaeological features.

The Troll’s relocation from towering mountains to an intimate landscape of hills and barrows resulted in downsizing from a giant to a subterranean goblin who only emerges after sunset. This nocturnal injunction links to the Norwegian tradition of Trolls turning to stone when exposed to sunlight. In Shetlandic lore, the nocturnal Trows hate the sun, but they are often merely trapped above ground if caught in its rays. Sometimes, however, they do indeed turn to stone like the Trolls in Norway (or the ones in Tolkien’s The Hobbit).

This belief helped explain the islands’ numerous standing stones and megaliths. The stone circle on Fetlar, known as the “Haltadans” (the halting (i.e., limping) dance), is said to be a group of Trows and their fiddler who were so engrossed in their music that they failed to notice the dawn. The “limping” nature of the dance refers to the Trows’ clumsy, hopping gait. Many traditional Shetland fiddle tunes are said to have been learned directly from the Trows, with human fiddlers hearing the music drifting from hills and knowes and memorising the melodies.

Plants are part of Trow-lore, too. Ferns were known as “Trowie cairds” (a caird being a carding tool used to comb raw wool), and foxgloves were “Trowie glives” (and the word “foxglove” itself derives from “folk’s glove”, as in the little folk, i.e., the fairies). There are also several landmarks on the islands whose names reflect Trow ancestry.1

Earliest mentions of Trows

In the earliest descriptions, Trows are sea-dwellers. The first mention is in Joseph Ben’s Descriptio Insularum Orchadiarum, from the first half of the sixteenth century, a Latin text in which they are called Troicis or Trowis, seafaring inhabitants of the island of Stronsay. The maritime monsters resemble small male horses covered in seaweed and with huge genitalia. They were said to harass the women of the island, a narrative that aligns more closely with the predatory water-horses, Nuckelavee and Kelpie.

So, the word “Trow” was in the local lexicon by the sixteenth century, albeit as a monstrous water horse. In the early seventeenth century, “Trow” appears in the records of the Scottish witch trials. The Court Book of Shetland (1615–1629) records cases of individuals accused of consorting with spirits, but although the word “Trow” is used, it is synonymous with the broader concept of “fairies”. In these documents, the supernatural entities are described as granting powers of healing or inflicting “elf-shot” on livestock.

In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, more structured descriptions emerged. Samuel Hibbert, in his Description of the Shetland Islands (1822), provided one of the first comprehensive taxonomies of the Trow, noting their small stature, green clothing, and ability to make themselves invisible to ordinary mortals. Sir Walter Scott, in his Northern Isles-based novel The Pirates (1821), notes, rather confusingly,

The Drow or Trow, the Norwegian Troll, is a magician, or wizard, but more properly the Dwarf of the Scandinavian mythology.

Hibbert’s and Scott’s accounts, alongside those of other early nineteenth-century writers, suggest that by this period, the folkloric identity of the Trow had stabilised into three distinct groups: Land Trows (aka Drows or Hill Trows), Sea Trows (similar to the Finfolk of Orkney folklore), and the mythological Stone Trows of the standing stones.

The Land Trow

Physically, Land Trows are short, ugly, and misshapen, with grey or earth-coloured skin. Their physical oddities are often reflected in their names, such as Bannafeet, referring to feet shaped like bannocks (flat breads), or Truncherface, referring to a face as flat as a wooden trencher. This emphasis on ugliness and physical abnormality contrasts with the often ethereal and beautiful fairies of mainland Scottish or Gaelic tradition, but aligns with the famously ugly Scandi Trolls.

The Trows’ social structure is often described as a mirror of human society – aligning with the post-Catholic theories of Robert Kirk – with added supernatural elements. Within their hills, Trows live in halls decorated with gold and silver, feasting on the finest foods and wines. They have a complex social hierarchy, including a subspecies, the Kunal Trows (King Trows), who are exclusively male and, consequently, forced to seek mortal wives. They are only permitted one child, and the poor mortal mother invariably dies soon after the birth. This makes the Kunal Trow a melancholy creature.

The Stone Trow

The Trows of the stone circles are the stuff of mythology, but real ones may still be out there somewhere. In 1968, a man named Bill Traill entered the Dwarfie Stane on the Orkney island of Hoy and saw a small, gnarled, brownish figure emerge from the shadows of the stone chamber. The creature quickly vanished, leaving Traill convinced of the old legends of Trows inhabiting the site (the specific dweller here was Trolld the Dwarf, according to Walter Scott).

The Sea-Trow

While the Land Trows occupied hills and mounds, the Sea Trows lurked in the waters surrounding Shetland and Orkney. According to some legends, they were originally Land Trows who were banished following a civil war. This wet exile led to physical adaptations: Sea Trows are described as “great rolling creatures” with scaly skin, seaweed for hair, and ungainly, waddling movements when on land.

Sea Trows occupy a folkloric space similar to the Selkies (seal-folk) and the Finmen, and are viewed with dread by fishermen. They tangle nets, steal fish from hooks, and capsize boats. In the 1770s, a tenant at Crawford Muir in Shetland was reported to have sacrificed a black lamb to the Sea Trows to ensure the success of a curse against his enemies. The church-based recorders of this incident in The Statistical Account of Scotland (1791–1799) were suitably unimpressed.

Sea Trows sometimes entered houses near the shore while the inhabitants were away, causing gentle mischief such as putting out the fire in the grain kiln or rearranging the furniture. One tale from Sandwick, recorded in John Spence’s Shetland Folk-Lore (1899) tells of a man who, fed up with these intrusions, hid under the straw in his barn and attacked the Trows with a flail when they entered to warm themselves by his kiln, an ambush that so shocked them that they never returned. It’s a striking paradox – while supernatural and feared, the Sea Trow was physically vulnerable and could be deterred by simple acts of human violence.

Trows in the nursery

Another common Trow narrative involves the “midwife of the mound”. In these tales – collected in the late nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries – a midwife is whisked away to an underground mound to assist a Trow-wife in labour. She is given a magical ointment to rub on the baby’s eyes, accidentally gets some in her own, and gains the “Second Sight”. Later, she sees the Trow in a public place (such as a market) and is blinded by him when he realizes she can see him. But we’re a long way from the Scandinavian Troll here, as these stories are told about fairies throughout the British Isles.

Again, like the fairies of the Scottish mainland, Trows were frequently blamed for “changelings”. If a healthy baby suddenly became sickly or behaved oddly, it was believed the Trows had stolen the real child and left an effigy or an elderly Trow in its place. The women were in danger, too – those in childbed were considered to be in “Trowie danger” and were never left unsupervised for fear they might be taken by Trows, with a dead effigy being left behind in their place. These beliefs provided a folk explanation for sudden infant death syndrome, children with Down’s Syndrome, and the all-too-common tragedy of maternal mortality.

There are also many tales of Trows in the role of the Brownie, a household spirit who clears up human mess and helps with work around the home and farm, but takes great offence and leaves in a huff if offered any gifts. By this stage, though, the Trow is so far removed from its Norse roots that I’ll nip this branch in the bud.

Methods to discourage Trows are simple and fairy-generic: they are deterred by iron and steel (so a knife or fork left in food would protect it), and they feared holy symbols, making the Bible, holy water, the crucifix, and the sign of the cross effective guards. During Yule (the Midwinter season), when Trows were believed to be at their most active and dangerous (this being the one time of year when they were allowed to spend all day outside their mounds), families would perform “saining” rituals, such as making straw crosses or carrying burning peats through the house to purify the space.

The survival of the Trow

The Trows are said to have left the Northern Islands in the nineteenth century, driven out by nonconformist preachers. However, in the twenty-first century, they have returned in a new guise, becoming a symbol of regional identity and a staple of the heritage industry. Modern Shetland and Orkney culture has embraced the Trow as a mascot, distancing the creature from its formerly malign reputation. Trows appear regularly in children’s books, popular culture, and tourism materials. This modern incarnation is a far cry from the equine sexual predators described by Jo Ben or the hill-dwellers and child-stealers of the eighteenth century, but perhaps closer to the original indigenous Trow, the successor of the Norse Troll, unique to the northern islands.

However, this article’s key question remains – is the Trow a middle ground between the Scandinavian Troll and the Scottish fairy, or simply a Northern Isles name for the latter? The huge gap in the story certainly doesn’t help answer the question. The earliest literary appearance of Trows in Joseph Ben’s writings from 1529 or thereabouts is frustratingly late for a first mention, as the Northern Isles had been ruled by the Norwegians since the ninth century, and there were Scandinavian settlers there 200 years previously. The islands became part of Scotland in 1472, and yet the Trow only appears on the page in the sixteenth century.

Given the lack of evidence of a long Trow-as-Troll tradition, it seems likely that “Trow” was, for most people, simply a cognate of “fairy”, covering a broad range of beasties from Finfolk and barrow wights to brownies and hobgoblins. Apart from in Shetland, where they are, partly, the heirs of the Trolls, although the Troll connection is weaker than I had assumed when first researching this article.

Nevertheless, the Trow remains a unique entity in British folklore, a product of linguistic shifts, mythological hybridisation, and geographic isolation. It evolved from the grand, mountain-striding Trolls of Norway into a subterranean mound-dweller and sea creature that reflected the archaeological and geographical reality of the Northern Isles. But as a distinct species, the Trow-derived-from-Troll seems to be restricted to Shetland.

The Trow’s journey from Norway to the burial mounds of Shetland and the gift shops of the twenty-first century is, on the one hand, an impressive narrative of folkloric flexibility and cultural endurance. On the other hand, the notion of the Scottish Trow as a creature distinct from the British Fairy is more a semantic argument than an evidence-based one.

The Luftwaffe’s He 177A Greif heavy bomber

Intercepting German radio transmissions, jamming their radar, and sending misleading rumours across the waves and airwaves are well-documented methods of deception in the Second World War. But Operation Starfish has been a bit more coy, even though it doubtless saved hundreds of lives, tricking German bombers into dropping their payloads on open countryside instead of British cities.

Operation Starfish grew out of a decoy program for factories and airfields – known as “Q” sites – masterminded by Colonel John Turner, an engineer and retired Air Ministry officer, prompted by the Germans’ use of incendiary bombs. A fire, viewed from above, could fool bomber pilots into thinking this was the pre-bombed town they should continue bombing. The decoy programme was kickstarted by the devastating 1940 raid on Coventry, and Turner was commissioned to protect seven major urban centres - Derby, London, Bristol, Manchester, Sheffield, Middlesbrough, and Crewe - by constructing decoy Starfish towns. The programme expanded rapidly during 1941.

Turner originally called the programme Special Fire, but the nickname Starfish, originating from work at the Bristol site, became the standard term for the network of decoy towns. The suburban follies were strategically placed about four miles from their target cities and at least one mile from any other smaller settlement. Each contained mock buildings, vehicles, infrastructure, lighting, and controlled fires to replicate the appearance of a city already hit by incendiary bombs. The lights and fires were controlled from nearby bunkers.

Derby: Attack of the Decoy Starfish

As a town with a major war hardware manufacturer, Derby faced the prospect of sustained bombing and the kind of destruction not seen in these parts since Queen Æthelflæd burned down the town more than 1,000 years earlier.1 Derby’s chief hope of survival lay in Colonel John Turner and the newly founded National Decoy Authority.

Operation Starfish was pragmatic, accepting the reality of blitzkrieg but seeking to minimise the collateral damage in the aftermath of the devastation unleashed in Coventry. A German bomber searching for its target would be drawn towards a town that had already sustained hits – no amount of blackouts and other precautions could mask burning buildings. The goal of Operation Starfish was to create a burning mock town for those bombers to dump their hardware on.

In this part of the country, Nottingham was the Germans’ main target - a significant industrial hub that produced essential military supplies, ranging from pharmaceuticals and weapons to heavy machinery and vehicles. But Derby was also at risk of airborne attacks due to the Rolls-Royce factory in Spondon and its capacity for churning out aircraft engines. Zeppelins had attempted air raids here in the First World War with minimal success.

The decoy town was constructed in July 1940 near Ambaston in the Belvoir valley, as close to the middle of nowhere as you could get between Derby and Nottingham. A few mock buildings, vehicles, and railway lines embellished with several heaps of hastily harvested flammable material were installed with the kind of super-fast slapdash that not even the best cowboy builder in the land could hope to emulate. As the Luftwaffe droned in, the site was torched and, from the air, it looked like Derby was merrily ablaze.

An unidentified Starfish site

The Belvoir Valley Starfish had a two-fold purpose: to impersonate Derby for the confounding of the enemy planes who were heading to the town, and to make the bulk of the invasion, which was destined for Nottingham, get its bearings wrong. And it worked incredibly well. Taking the Starfish Derby as their guide, the German planes emptied their deadly cargo where Nottingham should have been, but wasn’t. If you see what I mean.

Derby’s Starfish decoy was one of the prototypes, and by the time the plan had been perfected, the Starfish blueprint had evolved ingenious fire effects to make the folly towns more realistic from above. Various materials were used, including wood, coal, creosote, paraffin, and oil. Violent flashes of light replicating explosions were created by dowsing oil boilers with water. It was an eyebrow-singeing firework display, with the whole thing ignited electrically by men in a nearby bunker. About 500 metres was deemed the safest distance (although not safe from the deadly deluge issuing from the fooled bombers above, of course).

Starfish saves Rolls-Royce

Derby’s first air raid siren sounded just two days after the declaration of war - a false alarm on this occasion, but the shape of things to come. Operation Starfish diverted many air raids, but there were still 10 attacks on the town. On 15 January 1941, 1,650 houses were damaged in a shower of 50 high explosives, and the Arboretum and railway stations were damaged. Twenty people died in the attack, with many more injured. The Rolls-Royce factory was the Luftwaffe’s main target, as this was where the Merlin engine that powered Britain’s air fleet of Spitfires and Hurricanes was developed, an engine instrumental in winning the Battle of Britain. The Lancaster Bombers’ engines were Merlins, too. If the Germans could take out the factory that produced these war machines, it would ground the British Air Force.

Rolls-Royce was ingenious in its Starfish-inspired self-defence, camouflaging the plant to resemble a village, with rows of houses, a chapel, a church tower, water towers, and trees. Had there not been a wartime mission behind these efforts, it would have been called an art installation, as it was designed by local painter Ernest Townsend (not exactly a household name, but probably Derby’s most famous painter after eighteenth-century Joseph Wright). Only once was the Rolls-Royce factory successfully hit, during a swift raid on the 27th of March 1942 by a Dornier 217 bomber. Twenty-two Derbeians lost their lives on that night. But there is no doubt that Rolls-Royce would have been hit more heavily than this had it not been for Townsend’s artistic camouflage, and the brilliant ruse of Operation Starfish just down the road.

Operation Starfish was bolstered by successful attempts to jam the Luftwaffe’s radar signal, and with hindsight, it can be said that Derby got off relatively lightly. Just 74 residents were killed and 350 injured during air raids here in the Second World War. But things did not go so well for the local regiment, the Sherwood Foresters. Many of them were trapped at, and evacuated from, Dunkirk in June 1940, and many more were taken prisoner in Singapore in January 1942, several dying in Japanese concentration camps. For this reason, the Derby celebrations on VE Day on 8 May 1945 were low-key. Derbeians only celebrated with gusto on 15 August when those two horrific bombs brought the conflict to a close on VJ Day.

Overall, the national decoy programme made a significant contribution to Britain's defence. In addition to the eight Starfish sites, by the end of the war, 237 decoys had protected 81 towns and cities. It is estimated that nearly 1,000 tons of German ordnance were diverted away from civilian populations and dropped onto decoys in otherwise empty fields.
