The Unchosen Life—What Kierkegaard and the Stoics Knew About Freedom

Dying Every Day (Day 156)

Imagine a young man with every door open.

He is talented, and he knows it. He could be a scholar—the mind is there. He could be an artist; people have told him so. He could go into business and probably do well, or travel, or fall in love, or devote himself to a cause.

Every path is available to him, and that is precisely the point: they are all still available, all still open, because he has walked down none of them. He keeps them open the way a collector keeps things in their original packaging.

To choose one would be to close the others, and he cannot bear to close anything. So he stands at the center of all his beautiful possibilities, turning slowly, admiring them, committing to nothing.

We know this young man. Many of us have been him. And we live in the age that has perfected him: the age of the open tab, the unchosen life, the endless scroll of options, none of which we select.

We have made a virtue of keeping our options open.

Two very different traditions, separated by nearly two thousand years, looked hard at this man and came to the same unsettling conclusion.

He is not free. He is in despair, and he does not even know it.

The young man is a portrait from a book published in 1843 by the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. The book is called Either/Or, and it is built as a kind of trap.

Kierkegaard does not appear in it. Instead, he invents a set of characters and lets them speak. A fictional editor claims to have found a bundle of papers in an old desk, written by two different men, and to have simply published them.

The first man, known only as “A,” is the aesthete: the writer of the open doors, the connoisseur of moods and possibilities. The second, an older man named Judge William, is the ethical voice, writing letters to the first in an attempt to save him.

Kierkegaard refuses to tell you which one is right.

He hands you the two lives and forces the choice onto you. That is the either/or of the title. It is not the book’s argument. It is the book’s demand.

And the demand cuts deeper than it first appears. Because Judge William’s real charge against the aesthete is not that he has chosen wrongly. It is that he has never truly chosen at all.

The philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre put it like this: the choice between the aesthetic and the ethical life “is the choice whether or not to choose in terms of good and evil,” whether to step into the kind of life where your choices actually bind you, actually cost you, actually make you into someone.

The aesthete’s whole existence is a strategy for avoiding that. He samples. He tries things on. He keeps every possibility in reserve. And he calls this freedom, but Judge William sees it for what it is: a man dissolving, because a self is not something you have; it is something you forge, and you forge it only by choosing, by closing doors, by daring to become one actual thing instead of remaining a shimmering cloud of potential ones.

Listen to how the Judge describes the inner life of such a person—and notice that it could describe anyone you know, or even yourself on a certain kind of afternoon:

Enormous fluctuations. Because if you have not chosen a self, then you are only ever your current mood—elated in the morning, hollow by evening, blown from one state to the next with nothing underneath to hold you steady.

The aesthete is not the captain of his life.

He is the weather of it.

And against this, the Judge sets the person who has chosen: the one who “has chosen himself infinitely,” and who therefore “sees his mood beneath him.”

That is the whole difference. Not a life without moods, but a life no longer ruled by them, because something has been chosen that stands above them and orders them.

Now here is what should stop us.

Because that idea—that a scattered, unchosen life is a kind of living death, and that steadiness comes only from choosing something above your moods to organize everything else—is not original to Kierkegaard.

He gave it one of its most piercing forms. But the Stoics were there eighteen centuries ahead of him, and they said it even more plainly.

Seneca watched the same restless man drift through the streets of Rome.

And he diagnosed him in a single phrase:

“Everywhere means nowhere.” The man who is in all places is finally in none of them. The man who reads every book knows no book.

The man who keeps every path open walks no path at all.

Seneca was writing, in that letter, about scattered reading—flitting from author to author, never staying long enough to be changed by any of them. But he knew the disease was larger than reading. It was a way of living.

And in another place he described the sufferer of it like this: the person who pursues “no fixed goal,” who is “tossed about in ever-changing designs by a fickleness which is shifting, inconstant, and never satisfied with itself.”

Tossed about by fickleness, never satisfied.

That is Kierkegaard’s aesthete, described by a Roman Stoic writing seventeen hundred years before Kierkegaard was born. The two men are looking at the same human being. And they are pointing at the same cure.

Seneca gave that cure this well-known image:

“When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is favorable.”

If you have not chosen your harbor, then no wind can help you; every breeze is as useless as every other, because you have nowhere you are trying to go.

The winds of fortune blow, as they always will, and the man without a harbor is simply carried—this way today, that way tomorrow, mistaking the motion for a journey. He is not sailing. He is drifting, beautifully, nowhere.

And Seneca pairs it with a second image:

“The archer must know what he is seeking to hit; then he must aim and control the weapon by his skill.”

First the target. Then the skill. Aim without a target is not aiming at all. And this is the order almost everyone gets wrong.

We work feverishly on our skills, our habits, our optimization, our productivity—the drawing and controlling of the bow—while never once settling the prior question of what we are actually aiming at. We become magnificent archers who have never once asked what we are aiming at.

So here is the convergence. Kierkegaard and the Stoics—two very different traditions—agree on something fundamental about how a human life works.

You cannot walk two paths at once.

The refusal to choose is not freedom; it is dissolution. And what makes the choice possible is clarity about a single highest good. A harbor you are sailing for. A target you are aiming at. One thing, chosen and held, beneath which everything else can finally take its order.

Without it, you are the aesthete turning among his possibilities. You are Seneca’s traveler with a thousand acquaintances and no friends. You are the archer in the fog. With it, for the first time, the motion of your life becomes a direction.

And now the pressure that makes all of this more than an interesting idea.

The passage about the drifter, the man tossed about by fickleness, pursuing no fixed goal, does not come from just anywhere. It comes from an essay titled “On the Shortness of Life.” And that title is an important point.

The aesthete believes, without ever quite admitting it, that he has time. That is the unspoken assumption beneath every door he keeps open—that he can hold them all a while longer, sample a little more, defer the choice, and still, someday, when he is ready, step into a real life.

The open door is a bet on the future.

It assumes the future is long.

And the truth is, the future is uncertain. This is the one fact the aesthete cannot metabolize, and it is the fact this whole podcast is named for. You are dying. Not dramatically, not today, but steadily, a little each day—and the time in which you might choose a life is not infinite. It is, in fact, short.

Every day spent keeping your options open is not a day held in reserve. It is a day of the one and only life you were given, spent unlived—drawn down from an account whose balance you cannot see and cannot refill.

This is what turns Kierkegaard’s “either/or” from a philosophical puzzle into something real and practical. The choice is not between choosing now and choosing later. There may be no later. The choice is between choosing now and quite possibly never choosing at all.

The refusal to choose is itself a choice.

Seneca put the whole matter in a single line, and it is the sharpest thing in this meditation: “It is not that we have a short time to live,” he wrote, “but that we waste a lot of it.” The waste is the drifting. The waste is the open door.

Now I owe you a word of clarification. Kierkegaard was not a Stoic. He would have resisted the label.

For the Stoics, the highest good was virtue. The tranquility the Stoics are famous for was never the goal itself but the byproduct of a life ordered under that one good. For Kierkegaard, the highest good is not finally a rational principle you deduce but a relation you enter with your whole passionate self, and he suspected that serenity itself could become one more sophisticated way of avoiding the terror and the commitment of really living.

And where the Stoic climbs above passion into calm, Kierkegaard insists that the deepest commitment is itself a passion, chosen in fear and trembling, never safely secured. That is a genuine disagreement.

They do not want the same harbor, and they do not agree on how you sail there.

But notice what they share beneath the disagreement, because that is what we can actually use tonight. Both saw, with complete clarity, that the unchosen life is a catastrophe wearing the mask of freedom.

Both insisted that you must choose a highest good and let it order everything below it. They disagreed about which harbor. They did not disagree, even slightly, that you need one.

Daily Practice

Ask yourself the one question both the Judge and the philosopher are finally putting to you.

What is your harbor?

Not what your options are. You have plenty of those; we all do. The question is what you have actually chosen.

What is the single good beneath which the others arrange themselves?

The thing that, when the winds of the week blow you around, tells you which way is still home. And here is the honest test, because most of us would rather not run it. Look at how you actually spent the last ordinary week of your life — the hours, the attention, the energy.

Not what you say you value. What the week reveals you value. Does it show a person sailing for a harbor? Or does it show the aesthete, turning slowly among his beautiful open doors, committing to none of them.

If you cannot name your harbor, that is not a failure.

It is the most important thing you could possibly discover tonight, because you cannot set a course for a place you have never named. So name it. Choose it. Close, deliberately, a few of the doors you have been holding open for years, not because open doors are bad, but because a life spent guarding them is a life never actually lived.

You cannot walk two paths. You were never able to.

You cannot wait forever at the fork, because waiting is not free—it is paid for, one day at a time, out of the only life you have.

The Gap Between Knowing and Doing

The philosopher and the athlete are working on the same problem.

The athlete knows that wanting to be fast is not the same as being fast.

Between the desire and the capacity lies the only thing that actually closes the gap—the practice, repeated daily, in conditions that are sometimes ideal and more often not. No serious athlete waits to feel motivated.

Motivation is a consequence of practice, not its precondition.

You train. The capacity develops. The desire follows.

The philosopher has the same problem and the same solution.

Epictetus taught philosophy the way a coach teaches sport.

The point is not the argument. The point is performance, and it happens under the actual conditions of your life.

He supposedly had no patience for students who could reproduce philosophical positions with precision, yet whose behavior remained unchanged. That, he insisted, was not philosophy. It was its elegant, useless imitation.

Aristotle made the same point from a different angle. We become just by doing just acts, brave by doing brave acts, temperate by doing temperate acts.

What you repeatedly do is quietly becoming who you are—not as a metaphor but as a description of how human character actually forms.

The implication is both sobering and clarifying.

You do not have a fixed character that expresses itself in your actions. You have actions that are slowly building your character.

The person you are becoming is not the person you intend to be.

It is the person your habits are producing.

This is why discipline is not punishment. It is not white-knuckled self-denial or the grim performance of virtue for an imagined audience. It is the daily decision to act from your deepest values rather than your immediate impulses.

The gap between who you are and who you intend to be is not a knowledge problem. It is a practice problem.

And practice does not wait for ideal conditions.

It begins in the next available moment with the next available action.

Daily Practice

Identify the single most important disciplined action available to you today. Not the most urgent—the most important.

The one you have been meaning to do, the one you know matters, the one you keep finding reasons to defer. Do it first, before anything else. Not because you feel ready. Because readiness is built from doing, not from waiting to feel ready.

The Returning Mind

Dying Daily—Meditations for Mortals

You have already lost it a few times this morning.

Before the coffee was finished. Before the first obligation arrived. Before the day had properly begun, the mind had already wandered.

To the thing on the calendar that hasn’t happened yet. Maybe to the version of your life that exists just ahead of the current one.

The mind wanders.

This is not a character flaw.

It is what minds do.

Every serious practitioner of attention in the history of human thought has known this. What they agreed on, across traditions and across centuries, was the practice that addresses it.

This is not a metaphor.

It is a description of a mechanism.

The mind does not passively observe what it attends to.

It is shaped by it.

The person who dwells on grievances becomes aggrieved. The person who returns repeatedly to anxiety becomes anxious. The person who trains attention toward what is true, good, and genuinely worth the hours of a life begins, slowly and imperceptibly, to become someone who sees truly and lives well.

The Stoics called this the discipline of assent—the practice of governing not just what you do but what you allow the mind to dwell on. Marcus returned to it daily in his private journal, not because he had mastered it but because mastery was never the point.

The point was the practice.

The returning.

The untrained mind wanders and stays wherever it lands.

The trained mind wanders and comes back.

Not perfect attention—the repeated act of recovery. Each return is a small act of will. Each one makes the next slightly easier.

This is how attention is built, not in one sustained effort but in ten thousand small recoveries from distraction.

Daily Practice

Choose one activity today and give it your complete attention. A meal, a conversation, a single hour of work.

When the mind wanders, notice the wandering and return. Each return is a repetition. Each repetition builds the capacity. By the end of the activity, you will have practiced attention more deliberately than most people do in a week.

Letter 2 — On Discursiveness in Reading

Judging by what you write and by what I hear about you, I have a good feeling about your progress. You are no longer running here and there, distracting yourself by constantly changing your surroundings. That kind of restlessness is usually the sign of an unsettled mind.

One of the first signs of a well-ordered mind is the ability to remain in one place and be comfortable in one's own company.

But be careful that the same restlessness does not appear in your reading.

Reading too many authors and too many kinds of books can make the mind scattered and unsteady. You must spend time with a limited number of great thinkers and digest their works if you want their ideas to take firm hold in you.

Everywhere means nowhere.

A person who spends his whole life traveling may acquire many acquaintances but few friends. The same is true of someone who never stays with a single author long enough to know him but instead rushes from one book to another.

Food does no good if it leaves the stomach as soon as it is eaten. Nothing interferes with healing more than constantly changing medicines. A wound will not heal when one treatment is replaced by another. A plant that is repeatedly moved never grows strong.

Nothing can benefit us if we do not remain with it long enough for it to work.

The same is true of books.

Since you cannot read every book you possess, it should be enough to possess only as many as you can actually read.

“But,” you say, “I like dipping into one book and then another.”

Be careful. Sampling too many dishes may satisfy the appetite for variety without providing much nourishment. Read the great authors. And when you desire something different, return to something good that you have already read.

Do not always seek something new.

Each day, take something from your reading that strengthens you against poverty, death, or whatever else life may bring.

Thoreau on the Marrow of Life

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

He went for two years, two months, and two days.

Henry David Thoreau—the 19th-century American writer who borrowed an axe and built his own cabin on land his friend Ralph Waldo Emerson owned near Walden Pond in Massachusetts—was not running away from life.

He was running toward it. He had noticed something about the life being lived around him that he found genuinely troubling. Not that people were unhappy exactly, but that they were absent. Caught in the machinery of earning and spending, obligation and respectability, they had never quite stopped to ask what the machinery was for. He went to the woods to ask.

Not permanently, he was too honest for romantic withdrawal. He walked into town regularly, had dinner with his mother, and returned the borrowed axe sharper than he had received it. He remained a citizen of his time and place.

What he was after was not escape but a particular quality of attention—a long enough pause in the noise to hear what the noise had been covering.

He built the cabin himself. He planted beans and foraged what the land offered. He tracked the seasons with the kind of attention that most of us reserve only for screens. And in doing these simple, necessary things, he found that something shifted. The life stripped of accumulation and performance turned out to contain more rather than less.

The morning at the pond.

The sound of rain on the roof he had built with his own hands.

The woodchuck crossing the path.

Things he would have moved past in his former life now had weight and presence and the quality of the genuinely real.

“I did not wish to live what was not life; living is so dear.”

The question Walden keeps returning to is the same: what is actually happening in the hours of your days? Not what you are planning to live, or what you tell yourself you are living. What is actually there when you honestly look at how the time goes?

“Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity,” he wrote, not as an aesthetic preference but as a diagnostic tool. The accumulation of things, commitments, and noise is not neutral. It buries the signal. Strip away enough, he observed, and something becomes audible that the accumulation had been drowning out.

What becomes audible is not a revelation.

It is something quieter, the actual texture of your own life rather than the performance of it.

He called it the marrow of life.

Daily Practice

Ask yourself honestly: what would I do differently if I were living deliberately rather than by default? Identify one way you are going through the motions without fully inhabiting them. Then ask what one small step toward the marrow might look like—not a dramatic gesture, but a genuine one.

St. Irenaeus on Being Fully Alive

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

Most of us know what it feels like to be half alive.

The meal eaten without tasting it. The conversation held while thinking about something else. The day that passes in a blur and leaves behind the faint unease that you were not quite there for any of it.

We move through our lives managing, getting through—and call it living.

St. Irenaeus of Lyon named it in the 2nd century. As a bishop and theologian, he spent his life arguing against teachers who wanted to turn salvation into an escape from the body and the material world.

From that argument came one of the most compressed and insightful statements in the Christian tradition:

“The glory of God is the living human being, and the life of the human being is the vision of God.”

It means that salvation is not a flight from creation, but its fulfillment in communion with God. Not five words about religion. Five words about what a human being is actually for.

He meant the fully present human being: attentive, embodied, and awake to what is actually here. Not the person performing the rituals of a good life while absent from the life itself. Not the person so defended against the difficulty of existence that they are also defended against its beauty.

The person who truly shows up—to the meal, the conversation, the difficult task, the ordinary moment that will not come again—and brings their whole self to it.

Most people recognize the difference between the version of themselves that is genuinely present and the version that is merely going through the motions.

The first feels more real. More like who they actually are.

The second feels like a performance of a life rather than the life itself.

That recognition, available to anyone regardless of theological commitments, is precisely what St. Irenaeus is describing. The name he gives it is theological; the experience is universal.

The human person—body and mind together, rooted in the material world, capable of love, attention, and genuine presence—is not a problem to be solved or a prison to escape. They are the point.

Think of the moments in your life when you have felt most fully yourself. Not most comfortable. Not the most successful. Most alive—genuinely present, genuinely attentive, genuinely moved by what was in front of you.

Those moments have something in common. Not their content; they may have been joyful or difficult, ordinary or extraordinary.

What they share is a quality of attention.

A willingness to be fully where you are. To let what was happening actually happen to you rather than managing it from a safe distance.

That quality is what St. Irenaeus is pointing toward.

Whatever language you use for it—presence, aliveness, full engagement—the loss of it is real, and the cost is real.

The half-lived life is not a comfortable compromise. It is a kind of poverty that accumulates so gradually we forget we were ever richer.

Daily Practice

Where in your life are you most often half-alive—present in body, but elsewhere in attention, moving through the day on autopilot?

Choose one ordinary moment today and meet it more fully. Set down what you are doing for a breath. Notice what is here: your posture, your breath, the task in front of you, the person in front of you.

Then bring your full attention back to that one thing, even if only for a few minutes. Not a grand gesture.

Just one small act of aliveness, done on purpose.

Epicurus on the Greatest Good

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

We have almost entirely misread Epicurus.

He founded his school not in a prestigious hall like Plato’s Academy or Aristotle’s Lyceum, but in a garden outside Athens. It was a private space, deliberately modest, where a small community of friends could live and think together.

Men and women, free and slave, philosopher and ordinary person, were all equally welcome. The garden was not incidental to the philosophy.

It was the philosophy, made visible.

He has come down to us as the philosopher of pleasure. But what gets lost is what he actually meant by pleasure.

Not luxury. Not indulgence. Not the restless accumulation of new experiences that the modern world has made into a way of life.

Epicurus lived mostly on bread and water. Occasionally, he allowed himself a small piece of cheese—which he wrote to a friend he considered a positive feast.

He was not performing austerity.

He had simply discovered that the distance between what he needed and what he had was small enough to cross without anxiety.

That distance, he found, was where contentment lives.

The highest pleasure, he argued, is ataraxia—a Greek word meaning tranquility or freedom from disturbance. Not the thrill of getting what you want, but the deep peace of needing very little.

The person who has learned to want only what is truly available is wealthier than any king whose peace depends on everything going right. Yes, the king has more. He also has more to lose. And the knowledge of what he stands to lose casts a shadow over every feast.

What most people call pleasure, Epicurus would call anxiety wearing a pleasant mask. Picture the expensive dinner eaten while checking the phone. Or the holiday planned around photographing it rather than living it.

They are desires briefly satisfied on their way to becoming desires again.

He proved his own argument at the end of his life.

Dying from kidney stones—in real and considerable pain—he wrote to his friend that the cheerfulness arising from the recollection of his philosophical contemplation was more than enough to counterbalance the physical suffering.

He was not performing.

He was reporting.

The man who had built his life on ataraxia found, when the final test arrived, that it held.

Daily Practice

Identify one simple pleasure available to you today that you have been walking past in search of something more impressive. It could be a conversation, a meal, a moment of stillness. Attempt to give it your complete attention. Notice what happens when you stop treating it as a stepping stone to something better and simply let it be enough.

Dear Fellow Traveler,

There is a tax on other people’s opinions that most of us pay without noticing.

It shows up in the email drafted and redrafted until the tone feels safe. The opinion left unsaid in the meeting because the room seemed to lean another way. The life organized, in ways large and small, around managing how it appears to others.

The tax is collected continuously. The receipt is never issued.

Alfred Adler (1870–1937), the Austrian psychologist who spent his career being overshadowed by Freud, was considerably more interesting for it. He believed the approval instinct was the central organizing problem of modern psychological life.

Not trauma. Not repression. Not the unconscious drives that Freud found everywhere he looked. The simpler, more stubborn, more socially embedded need to be seen favorably by the people around you.

Adler’s diagnosis was this: the person organized around approval is not actually living their own life. They are living a performance of a life—calibrated continuously to an imagined audience whose judgment they have granted authority they never consciously chose to confer.

The key phrase is “the imagined audience.”

Because the approval we spend so much energy managing is rarely based on what people actually think. It is based on what we imagine they think—a projection, a construction, a committee of internal critics assembled from old voices and ambient social pressure, presiding over decisions they were never actually asked to make.

The committee is very good at its job.

It has been practiced since childhood.

It knows your weak points, your vanities, your particular sensitivity to certain kinds of disapproval. It convenes automatically, without being summoned, whenever you are about to say something honest, make a decision that serves your actual values, or simply be yourself in a way that might not land well.

And it does all of this entirely in your head.

Adler had a name for the freedom that becomes available when you dissolve that committee. He called it the courage to be disliked, the willingness to act from your own values and judgment even when the imagined audience objects.

Socrates on what philosophy requires

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

We are born wondering and spend much of our lives learning to stop.

The child asks why the sky is blue, where people go when they die, and why some people have more than others. The questions are endless, slightly exhausting, and almost entirely correct. They are aimed at the right things.

Then something happens—school, habit, the pressure to seem competent and settled—and the questions slowly give way to answers. We gather explanations and call it knowledge.

We file the mysteries away and call it maturity.

Socrates—whose entire philosophical method was a form of organized wonder—understood what was lost in that transaction better than most. The philosopher, he insisted, is not someone who has more answers than everyone else. The philosopher is someone who has never quite stopped being surprised by the questions. Who can stand before the ordinary and find it genuinely strange.

The philosopher, he insisted, looks at what everyone else has stopped noticing and asks again, with fresh eyes, what it actually is.

Aristotle made the same observation at the opening of his Metaphysics. It was wonder, he wrote, that led the first thinkers to philosophize—beginning with the strange things close at hand and moving from there to the greater mysteries. The tradition begins not with an answer but with the willingness to be stopped by a question.

Two of the greatest minds in the Western philosophical tradition. The same starting point.

The wondering adult is easy to recognize. It is the person who pauses on a walk to really look at a tree instead of passing it by. Who listens in conversation with genuine curiosity rather than waiting to speak.

That is the quality Socrates describes, rarer in adults than in children, and no less possible.

The person who has lost their childlike wonder has not become more sophisticated. They have become less awake. They move through a world stripped of astonishment and far smaller than it really is.

Christian scripture arrives at the same place from a completely different starting point. “Unless you become like little children,” Christ said, “you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Not naivety. Not ignorance. The radical openness of the one who has not yet decided that they already know.

That openness is not something we grow out of wisely.

It is something we abandon before we understand what it was and spend the rest of our lives circling back. Wonder is not the opposite of wisdom. It is where wisdom begins and where it returns, again and again.

Daily Practice

Choose one ordinary thing today—a tree, a conversation, your own breathing—and look at it as if you have never seen it before. Not as an exercise in pretending, but as a genuine act of attention.

Resist the urge to explain it. Simply stay with it long enough to notice what is actually there. That noticing is the beginning of everything.

Zeno on the Foundation That Holds

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

The founder of Stoicism was a merchant from Citium who lost everything in a storm off the coast of Athens around 304 BC. Stranded and stripped of all he had built, he wandered into a bookshop and picked up Xenophon’s Memorabilia—an account of Socrates. He read it standing there, then turned to the bookseller and asked where he could find men like that.

The bookseller pointed to Crates passing in the street. Zeno followed him. And from that shipwreck, one of the most enduring philosophical traditions in Western history was born.

What did Zeno have left? Not his merchandise. Not his reputation as a merchant. Not the life he had been building. He had his mind. He had his attention. He had the choice of what to do next.

What Zeno took from Socrates and built into the foundation of Stoicism was a radical claim about the nature of the good. Virtue—not wealth, not health, not reputation, not comfort—is the only true good.

Not because the other things are worthless.

Because they are not fully ours.

They come and go with fortune. They can be taken by a storm, a reversal, a decision made by someone else in a room we were never in. The person whose good is located in any of them is perpetually vulnerable.

They have placed their foundation where no foundation can hold.

Virtue is different. Cultivated inwardly, expressed in action, it is the one thing that belongs entirely to us. The storm can take the cargo. It cannot take the character of the man who responds to the loss with clarity and courage rather than bitterness and collapse.

Zeno’s most unexpected interpreter might be G.K. Chesterton, the 20th-century Catholic writer who knew the classical tradition with unusual depth. He described virtue this way:

“Virtue is not the absence of vices or the avoidance of moral dangers; virtue is a vivid and separate thing, like pain or a particular smell.”

That sentence sounds far from Stoicism, but it ends up in the same place. What Zeno reaches by reason, Chesterton reaches by faith: virtue is not a negation or a defensive posture, but an inward good that remains when fortune changes and everything external is stripped away. Twenty-three centuries apart, and from two very different traditions, they arrive at the same hard, hopeful truth.

Not a rule followed reluctantly.

Not a vice avoided narrowly.

But something alive and present in the bearing of a person, visible in how they face difficulty, recognizable in the quality of attention they bring to whatever is before them.

The person of genuine virtue does not merely refrain from wrongdoing.

They actively illuminate the situation they are in. There is something in them that the merely comfortable, merely admired person does not have—and no change of fortune can touch it.

Daily Practice

Ask yourself today: where have I placed my foundation? In something the storm can take—reputation, comfort, the approval of others—or in something it cannot? Identify one small act of genuine virtue you can do today. Not the avoidance of something wrong. The active doing of something right.

Tolstoy on the Most Important Time

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

Tolstoy was one of the most famous men in the world, the author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina, the count with the vast estate, the literary genius whose fame had arrived before he understood what it would cost him.

He spent the second half of his life convinced that all of it was precisely the wrong life. 

He gave away the rights to his books. He learned to make his own shoes. He even dressed as a peasant and worked in the fields. He was, by most accounts, genuinely impossible to live with.

In The Three Questions, the story from which today’s quote comes, a king wants to know what is the right time to act, who are the right people to listen to, and what is the most important thing to do. He travels to a hermit in the woods who answers his questions not through argument but through experience. Through the immediate, unrepeatable demands of the present moment.

The hermit’s answer to all three questions is the same:

• The most important time is now.

• The most necessary person is the one you are with.

• The most important thing is to do good to that person. Now. Here. This.

In What Men Live By, written that same year and published in the same collection, Tolstoy approached the same truth from a different angle. An angel is sent to earth and must learn three truths before he can return to heaven. He lives among ordinary people, watches how they work, worry, and plan, and gradually discovers what human beings actually live by. Not bread. Not security. Not comfort accumulated against fear.

Love. Given freely to the person who is actually there. The stranger at the door. The child in the room. The neighbor whose need is immediate.

Two stories. The same discovery.

The present moment is not one consideration among many. It is the only place where the life worth living can actually be lived.

This is what Tolstoy means when he says the present moment is the only time we have any power. Not power in the usual sense, not influence or control or the ability to shape outcomes. The power to love. To attend.

That power is available only now—not once things settle down, not in the relationship you will give your full attention to when the pressure lifts. Now. The person in front of you. The task in your hands. The moment you are in.

Tolstoy’s own life was the proof of how difficult this is to learn. He spent decades accumulating the fame and wealth he would spend the rest of his life trying to shed, increasingly aware that the life built around reputation and achievement is a life lived in the wrong tense.

Always preparing for the future.

Always accounting for the past.

Never quite here.

His three great short stories circle this same recognition from different angles. The dying Ivan Ilyich discovers too late that the life he lived was not the life that mattered. The master in Master and Man learns, in his final moments, what his servant had always known. And the angel returns to heaven with the simplest possible answer to the hardest possible question.

The simplest things. The most obvious things.

The things we spend our lives overlooking in search of something more impressive. They were there all along.

Daily Practice

Choose one person or one task right in front of you today, and give it your full attention—not the attention left over after everything else, but your complete, unhurried presence. And be careful not to plan the next thing while doing this one. Tolstoy spent forty years learning it. We can start today.

Zhuangzi on What We Cannot See

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

Zhuangzi was a Chinese philosopher (4th century BCE) whose work is at times hilarious and paradoxical. He had a gift for images that do more than arguments ever could. The frog has lived in the well all its life. The well is real, the water is real, and the walls are real. The frog’s knowledge of its world is accurate, complete, and carefully maintained.

And it is almost entirely useless as a guide to what lies beyond the rim.

We are, on most days, the frog (at least according to Zhuangzi).

But it’s important to recognize, in this example, that the frog is not stupid. It is not lazy, incurious, or poorly educated. It is simply limited by where it lives. Its knowledge of the well is real, and its confidence in that knowledge is absolute. That very confidence is what keeps it from understanding what it does not know. The well has become invisible because the frog has never been outside it.

Think of the first time you encountered a culture, a tradition, or a way of thinking genuinely different from your own and felt, however briefly, the walls of your own well. The assumptions that had felt like simply the way things are suddenly revealed themselves as one particular way of seeing among many.

The habit of mind that had organized your experience for years turned out to be a habit rather than a law. That moment of disorientation was not a failure of understanding. It was the beginning of it.

Every act of seeing happens from somewhere.

From a particular vantage point, a particular history, and a particular set of commitments so deeply held they have become invisible.

We do not see the world as it is. We see it as we are. And the well we have been living in shapes everything we perceive without our noticing. The culture, the family, the tradition, the story we tell about who we are and how things work—these are the walls. But this is not cause for despair. It is not even primarily a cause for humility, though humility follows.

It is cause for curiosity. For the recognition that the walls of the well are not the edge of reality. They are simply the edge of what we can currently see.

The ocean is not a threat to the frog.

It is an invitation.

Zhuangzi’s wisdom was not to escape the well. He knew that was impossible and would have found the ambition slightly comical. It was simply to know you are in one. To hold your certainties a little more lightly. To remain genuinely open to the possibility that the next conversation, the next book, or the next encounter with a way of thinking entirely unlike your own might show you something the well has been blocking all along.

That knowledge alone changes the quality of your seeing. And in time, seeing differently changes everything else.

Daily Practice

Identify one belief or assumption you have held for so long that it feels like simply the way things are—not a belief you chose, but a wall you inherited.

Ask: “What might I be unable to see because of where I am standing?”

Then seek out one perspective genuinely different from your own today—a book, a conversation, a tradition you have never taken seriously. Not to abandon your own view. To find out where the walls are.

A Stoic Lesson from The Odyssey

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Dying Daily.

Picture a man tied to the mast of his own ship.

He gave the order himself. “Bind me here,” he told his crew, and whatever I say, however I beg, do not untie me until we’re past. Then he had them fill their own ears with beeswax so they couldn’t hear a thing, but he left his own ears open.

And then the ship sails into the most dangerous stretch of water in the world, where the Sirens sing—a song so beautiful that every sailor who’s ever heard it has steered straight for the rocks to get closer, and died there, surrounded by the bones of everyone who came before. The man at the mast hears it. And it’s worse than he imagined. He strains against the ropes. He screams at his crew to turn the ship, to let him go; he has to get closer—and they can’t hear him, and the ropes hold, and slowly the singing fades behind them, and he survives.

That’s Odysseus. And if you’re anywhere near a movie theater, you might be aware of Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey in theaters (I saw it a few days ago). For this Dying Daily episode, a shorter and more casual version of the podcast, I want to talk about why the Stoics were interested in this story.

Here’s the strange part. Odysseus is not an obvious role model for a philosophy about self-control. He’s a liar. He’s a schemer. He cheats, he boasts, he sleeps with a goddess while weeping that he wants to go home, and he gets every single one of his men killed before he makes it back. Zeno and Epictetus both grumbled about his curiosity, his inability to just leave things alone. He is not a calm man. He is barely, at times, a good one.

And yet the Stoics—Seneca, Epictetus, Musonius, and others—kept returning to him. Seneca called him one of the wise, a man “not conquered by effort, despising pleasure, victorious over the whole world.” There’s even a whole scholarly book about it, tracing how philosophers took this cunning, morally sketchy trickster and slowly turned him into a model of wisdom. (It’s called From Villain to Hero.)

Why do all that work? Why rehabilitate this particular man?

Probably because he’s us. The Stoics weren’t interested in Odysseus because he was perfect. They were interested because he wasn’t—because the whole poem is really a map of a person trying, and mostly failing, and eventually learning, to govern himself. Every monster he meets is a passion.

Seneca saw straight through the adventure story to what it actually is. He wrote (I love this) that we waste our time arguing about the geography, about where exactly Odysseus sailed and whether the monsters were near Sicily or somewhere past the edge of the map. Who cares, he stressed.

“We ourselves are tossed about by storms every day, and our badness thrusts us into all the ills Odysseus encountered.”

The storms aren’t out there in the ocean. They’re in you. You and I sail past the Sirens every single day.

Which brings us back to the mast and a detail I find interesting.

The crew plugged their ears. Odysseus didn’t.

Now, the easy story to tell here is that the crew took the coward’s way and Odysseus did the brave, wise thing by facing the song head-on. But be honest with yourself for a second, because I don’t think that’s right.

The crew’s move is actually the prudent one. They removed the temptation completely. Wax in the ears, heads down, row, done. Nobody nearly dies. Nobody has to be restrained. If you told me your plan for staying away from the thing that’s wrecking your life was “I’m going to remove it entirely and not go near it,” I’d tell you that’s a good approach. That’s the clean answer. Cut it off and row.

And Odysseus? Odysseus insists on keeping his ears open so he can hear the most dangerous song in the world—and the only reason he survives it is that other people physically tie him down while he thrashes and screams at them to steer for the rocks. Let’s call that what it is. That’s not obviously the wise move. It’s kind of a reckless one. Prideful, even. It only works because he happened to have a loyal crew willing to ignore a direct order from their captain.

So why does the mast still have something to teach us? Not because it’s the best way. Because of why he needed it.

What Odysseus does is the move of a man who knows his own weakness. He can’t make himself into the crew, so he binds the version of himself that the crew never had to worry about being. He set up the conditions in advance, back when he was thinking clearly, so that in the moment when he absolutely was not—when he was screaming and certain he needed this—the earlier, clearer version of him would still be in charge.

And that points at something worth holding onto. There are really two tools here, not one. Sometimes the answer is the crew’s: remove the thing, don’t go near it, row past with your ears full of wax. When you can do that, do that; it’s cleaner, and it’s safer. But some Sirens you can’t plug your ears against. Some of them are woven right into a life you can’t row away from—the person, the habit, the pull that’s built into your days and isn’t going anywhere.

For those, avoidance isn’t on the table.

And that’s when you need the mast.

And notice what the mast actually is. It isn’t “want the thing less.” Odysseus didn’t want it less; he screamed to be let loose. It isn’t “pretend the song is ugly”; he heard how beautiful it was, more clearly than anyone alive. What he did was separate the two things that usually arrive fused together: he let himself feel the full pull of the desire, and he made it impossible to act on it.

He kept the wanting and removed the steering wheel.

Because that’s the trap, isn’t it?

Normally, wanting something badly enough and being able to act on it arrive together, in the same instant, in the same weak moment.

Odysseus pried them apart. He handled the acting-on-it part in advance—bound his own hands back when he was calm and clear—so that when the wanting arrived at full force, there was simply nothing he could do about it. The decision had already been made by the wiser man he used to be an hour ago.

Every one of us has a Siren.

You probably know exactly what yours is.

And you know the two responses that don’t work—pretend it isn’t there, or sail straight at it swearing you can handle it in the moment.

Odysseus found the third way. Bind your hands now, while they’re still yours to bind. So that later, when the wanting comes, and every part of you is straining toward the rocks, there’s nothing left to do but sail past.

The Stoics actually had a name for the first move in all of this, and we’ve discussed a few times on the podcast. It’s the part where Odysseus, calm on the deck, pictures the version of himself who’s about to lose his mind. They called it premeditatio malorum. The premeditation of adversity. Rehearsing the hard thing before it arrives.

It sounds gloomy, and it isn’t.

It’s the opposite.

Odysseus knew the Sirens were coming and instead of hoping he’d handle it when the moment came, he sat with the disaster in advance. He imagined himself straining at the ropes, begging, certain he needed to steer for the rocks. He met his own weakness before it showed up, while he was still strong enough to do something about it. That’s the whole practice. Not dreading the future, rehearsing it, so that when it comes, you’ve already made your decision and the decision is waiting there for you.

Almost everything that wrecks us wins by ambush.

It arrives in a moment when we haven’t decided anything yet, and so we decide in the grip of it, which is to say we don’t decide at all—we just get pulled.

Premeditation is refusing the ambush.

It’s looking down the road at the storm you know is coming and quietly asking, before you’re anywhere near it: who do I want to be when that hits, and what do I need to set up right now so that the person I’ll be then can’t undo it?

That’s one of the lessons to carry out of the theater this week, if you go. Somewhere in your life a Siren is singing. You don’t have to stop wanting it. You just have to make sure that wanting it isn’t enough to sink you.

Bind your hands while the water’s still calm.

You already know what that means for you—the thing you set up now, with a clear head, that the version of you in its grip won’t be able to undo. The blocked app, the poured-out bottle, the honest word spoken out loud. Whatever your ropes are. Go tie them now while you’re thinking clearly.

Seneca on the shortness of life

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

Nobody believes they are wasting their life.

That is what makes this so difficult.

We are busy. The evidence is everywhere. The calendar is full, the obligations are real, and the days vanish with alarming speed. We fall into bed exhausted and wake already behind. We eat while reading, walk while listening, sit in one place while thinking about another.

We are, at almost every moment, doing something.

And we have learned to mistake that doing for living.

Seneca knew this trap from the inside. He was one of the most instructively contradictory men in the ancient world—a Stoic philosopher who preached voluntary simplicity while amassing one of the largest fortunes in Rome, and an adviser to emperors who wrote the most penetrating essays on the examined life from within the least examined corridors of power. He was not a saint. He was something more useful—a clear-eyed man who could see exactly what was wrong with his own life and had the honesty to write about it anyway.

Being busy is not the same as being alive.

We can spend an entire life in frantic, sincere, exhausting activity and still, at the end of it, discover that we were never quite present for any of it.

That we were always somewhere else—planning the next thing, worrying about the last, rehearsing conversations that hadn’t happened or replaying ones that had—while actual life was happening in the room we just left. The meal eaten without tasting it. The conversation held without hearing it. The years that passed while we waited for things to settle down so life could properly begin.

This is the waste Seneca was describing. Not laziness. Not indulgence. Something considerably harder to see and harder to correct—the squandering of a life through perpetual absence from it. The person who has been busy for forty years and arrives at the end to discover that the busyness was a way of avoiding the very life it appeared to fill.

He wrote On the Shortness of Life in middle age, surrounded by wealth and influence, aware that he was not immune to the disease he was diagnosing.

That is what gives the essay its authority—not the authority of someone who has solved the problem but of someone who sees it clearly and is troubled by what he sees. He was not lecturing from a distance. He was confessing from the inside.

“Lay hold of today,” he wrote to his friend Lucilius, not tomorrow, not the more orderly version of your life that is always just ahead of the present chaos.

Today. The hours before you now.

The only hours you will ever truly have.

The life well lived, he concluded, is not necessarily the longest. It is the most inhabited.

Daily Practice

Look honestly at where your time and attention actually went yesterday—not where you meant them to go, but where they really went. Were you present for your own life, or somewhere else, planning, worrying, rehearsing?

Ask what it would look like to inhabit today a little more fully than yesterday.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The Things We Love

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

We are very good at describing the person we intend to be.

Generous—just waiting for the right moment. Present—once things settle down. Disciplined—starting Monday.

We carry these self-descriptions with considerable confidence, updating them periodically to account for recent failures while leaving the essential portrait intact. The person we are becoming is always just slightly ahead of the person we currently are.

We know who we mean to be.

We are simply not there yet.

St. Thomas Aquinas, the theologian the Church would come to call its greatest mind, was not interested in the person we intend to be. He was interested in something considerably more revealing. Not our aspirations. Not our stated values. Not the story we tell about ourselves at our most charitable.

Our loves.

What we actually turn toward when nothing is required of us. What we spend without being asked. What we protect when it comes under pressure. What we return to when the day has no particular demands and we are free to go anywhere. These, Aquinas insisted, are the honest portrait.

He believed that love was not primarily an emotion.

It was a direction.

The soul, he taught, is always in motion and always oriented toward something, always leaning, always moving in the direction of whatever it finds most real and most worth having.

This is what makes his observation so difficult.

Opinions can be adjusted. Stories can be revised. But the “loves” are harder to argue with because they are not claims we make. They are directions we are already moving in. And the evidence is in last week’s record—not what we intended, but where we actually went.

Not what we planned to spend our time on, but what we actually spent it on.

Not who we meant to be, but who we were when no one was watching, and nothing was required. The answers, honestly examined, can be uncomfortable.

But it’s important to remember that the “loves” can be reordered.

Not quickly, not by decision alone, but gradually, through the slow, patient practice of turning toward what is genuinely good often enough and long enough that it begins to feel like home. That reordering is what the moral and spiritual life is ultimately for.

It is what Aquinas spent his life describing and what every tradition in this series, in one form or another, points toward.

Daily Practice

Sit quietly with that picture for a few minutes without defending it.

Then ask two more questions: Is there a love you want to reorder? What would one small step in that direction look like today?

Dostoevsky: “Beauty Will Save the World”

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

He meant it literally.

Fyodor Dostoevsky stood before a firing squad at twenty-eight, heard the order, and was reprieved at the last possible moment in a calculated act of cruelty.

He survived years of imprisonment in Siberia, epilepsy, gambling addiction, and grinding poverty. And he emerged from all of it with his faith not merely intact but deepened—convinced that he had seen something in the extremity of human suffering that a comfortable life conceals.

Beauty, he had come to understand, was not an ornament added to reality. It was one of reality’s primary languages.

In The Idiot, he set a truly good man—Prince Myshkin, guileless and entirely without self-interest—in the middle of a corrupt, self-interested world. Early in the novel, Myshkin is shown a portrait of Nastasya Filippovna, a woman of extraordinary beauty who has been destroyed by the men who claimed to love her. He looks at the portrait for a long moment and simply says that she has suffered so much.

He has not been told her story.

He has not analyzed her expression.

Not beauty as aesthetic pleasure. Not beauty as comfort or escape. Beauty as a mode of perception, a way of seeing that bypasses the defended, calculating mind and arrives somewhere closer to the truth of things.

The person who has genuinely encountered beauty has been given, however briefly, eyes that see differently than before.

We have largely forgotten this.

The modern world treats beauty as decoration, something added to life after the serious work is done. The glimpse of a painting on the way to something else. The sound of music playing while doing something else.

We are embarrassed, in serious company, to admit that a piece of music broke us open, or that a painting stopped us cold, or that the face of someone we love, seen suddenly as if for the first time, rearranged something in us that argument could not have touched.

This is precisely what Dostoevsky is diagnosing.

A world that has lost its capacity for genuine encounter with beauty has not become more serious. It has become more blind.

Daily Practice

Seek out one encounter with genuine beauty today—in nature, in music, in art, or in the face of someone you love. Do not analyze it. Do not photograph it (please!). Do not rush to explain what it means. Simply let it settle in you and notice what it opens. That opening is the point.

Epictetus on the Discipline of Waiting

Welcome to Dying Every Day. This is Day 154.

Waiting reveals what the soul believes it deserves.

The delayed reply.

The stalled decision.

The slow line.

The season of life that will not resolve on your preferred schedule.

Impatience is rarely just about time. More often, it is about control. The mind wants reality to move at the pace of its wishes. When it does not, irritation rises—not only because the thing is delayed but also because the self feels crossed.

Epictetus gives one of the sternest and most liberating pieces of Stoic advice: “Stop demanding that things happen as you wish.”

At first, this sounds impossible, maybe even joyless. But he is not forbidding desire; he is exposing the misery of entitlement (I’ve referred to it previously as “the prison of preferences”). So much of daily friction comes from the assumption that your preferred timing carries moral force, that the world owes you immediacy, and that delay is a personal offense.

It usually is not.

Some waiting is painful, of course. Some uncertainty is not a mild inconvenience but a real trial. Epictetus does not erase that; he simply refuses to add a second burden: the internal protest that reality must become other than it is before you can remain composed.

Wishing that things happen as they do is not passivity.

It is contact.

It is the willingness to stand in the present moment instead of exhausting yourself by arguing with it. Once you stop fighting the bare fact, judgment becomes clearer. Patience becomes possible. Even action becomes more precise because it is no longer distorted by offended urgency.

Waiting is not empty time.

It is one of the places where the soul learns whether it can live without being obeyed immediately.

That lesson is rarely pleasant.

It is often freeing.

So the question is not whether life will wait for your preferred conditions.

It won’t.

The question is whether you can stay steady when it doesn’t.

Whether you can stop asking reality to move at the speed of your wishes before you are willing to meet it calmly. Whether you can learn to inhabit the moment you have, instead of exhausting yourself in protest against the moment you wanted.

This is what waiting can teach, if you let it.

Not resignation.

Not passivity.

But a quieter kind of strength.

The strength to endure an unanswered hour without bitterness. The strength to bear uncertainty without drama. The strength to trust that your life is still unfolding, even here and now.

Because sometimes waiting is not a waste of your life.

Sometimes it is precisely where your life is being formed.

St. Teresa of Ávila on the Interior Castle

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

Most of us are more familiar with wisdom than we are changed by it.

We read carefully, reflect sincerely, and, over years of honest effort, gather a considerable understanding of what the interior life is meant to look like. And yet we remain, beneath all that understanding, somehow untouched.

The map is beautifully annotated.

The territory has never been entered.

St. Teresa of Ávila knew this trap from the inside. She lived her interior life not in the comfort of a protected existence but under the scrutiny of the Spanish Inquisition—a woman who founded monasteries, reformed religious orders, and wrote some of the most penetrating spiritual literature in the Catholic tradition.

She did not distrust the mind.

She simply knew its limits.

The mind can describe the castle. It cannot enter it. In The Interior Castle, she imagined the soul as a magnificent dwelling of many rooms—each deeper and more luminous than the last, each requiring a different kind of attention to enter.

Most of us, she observed, spend our whole lives in the outer courtyard. Not from wickedness. Not from laziness. Simply because we were never told that the door to the deeper rooms is open—and that what lies beyond it is more real than anything the courtyard contains.

The mind is very good at describing the castle.

It is considerably less willing to cross the threshold.

We analyze our spiritual condition rather than enter it. We think about prayer rather than praying. We evaluate our progress rather than surrender to the process. And so we remain in the outer rooms—where everything can be named, measured, and kept at a comfortable distance from whatever it is we are actually afraid to find.

“God alone suffices,” she wrote—words she carried like a compass through every storm of her remarkable life. Not God plus certainty. Not God plus the approval of others or the resolution of what remains unresolved. God alone.

Everything else, however genuinely good, is furniture in the outer rooms.

Beautiful furniture, perhaps. But furniture.

The key to the deeper rooms is not intelligence, theological sophistication, or years of careful preparation. It is simply the willingness to stop describing the castle and walk inside.

That willingness is available to anyone, in any circumstance, at any point in their life—that is what St. Teresa spent her life pointing toward.

Daily Practice

Set aside five minutes today—away from your phone, away from noise, away from the impulse to analyze or explain. Sit quietly and simply be present with whatever is there. When your mind begins its commentary, as it will, notice it gently and return to the silence beneath it.

You are not trying to think your way into the deeper rooms. You are simply standing at the door. That is enough to begin.

Dear Fellow Traveler,

Happiness is having a rough century. Not the experience of it—people still manage that, occasionally, in the usual unpredictable ways.

But the project of it. The pursuit. The optimization.

The morning routine calibrated to produce it, the therapy aimed at locating its obstacles, the life architecture designed to finally, sustainably, scientifically secure it. We have more tools for the deliberate cultivation of happiness than any previous generation—and a mounting suspicion, felt rather than spoken, that something about the project is slightly off.

The suspicion is correct. And it is not new.

John Stuart Mill (1806–1873), a British philosopher who thought about human welfare with more rigor and more genuine feeling than almost anyone in the Western tradition, arrived at this conclusion the hard way. At twenty, he suffered what he later described as a crisis of the spirit.

He had been raised by his father to be a rationalist reformer, trained from infancy in logic and utility, shaped into a precise instrument for the improvement of society. And one day, examining himself honestly, he asked:

If everything I am working toward were achieved, would I actually be happy?

The answer arrived immediately.

And it was no.

Montaigne on the Human Condition

This is Perennial Meditations. A daily practice.

This is either deeply humbling or quietly liberating, depending on the day.

We spend considerable energy maintaining the impression that we have things more or less together—that the anxiety, the pettiness, the envy, the self-doubt, the moments of cowardice and smallness are exceptions to who we really are rather than features of the common human inheritance.

We curate carefully. We present the edited version. We assume, without quite deciding to, that everyone else is managing better than we are.

Michel de Montaigne—the 16th-century French philosopher who more or less invented the personal essay—spent his retirement in a tower library writing about himself with a candor that was almost shocking for his time and still disarming today. He wrote about his fears, his contradictions, his failures of will, his wandering attention, his body, and his death.

Not to confess or to heal, but simply to look honestly at what a human life actually contains.

What he found was not a particular man with particular flaws.

He found the human condition itself—wearing his face, living in his tower, reading his books. And the discovery was not depressing but clarifying. If every person carries the full mark of this condition. Its grandeur and smallness, its wisdom and foolishness, and its courage and fear.

Then the gap between who we are and who we think we should be is not a personal failing. It is the price of admission.

Montaigne did not think this was cause for complacency.

He thought it was cause for compassion—toward others, and perhaps most urgently, toward ourselves.

Daily Practice

Think of something you judge yourself for—a recurring weakness, a pattern you can’t seem to break. Sit with it today, not as a personal failing but as part of the common human inheritance. What would it feel like to hold it with compassion rather than contempt?
