I have learned a lot about it over the last 5 months, partly because one of my besties found out she was a type 1 diabetic! (No one knows insulin more than a diabetic! ) and partly because I figured out I had insulin resistance.

A lot of people really don’t understand insulin drives fat loss or storage. I really have come to understand many people’s weight issues have to do with insulin if they know it or not. Many people think they don’t need to worry about insulin unless they are diabetic. This really isn’t true. Insulin resistance is a major cause of metabolic dysfunction. This can be a tricky. One because it doesn’t always show up on blood tests. Even your blood sugar levels can be deceiving and you could have a lot of insulin needs you aren’t seeing. The more insulin your body needs and makes the more fat is stored. Insulin is the fat storage hormone! One of the type one diabetics I learned from who has been managing insulin for 40 years and is really good at it explained it like this: “One of the sign of diabetes is rapid weight loss. Although the person is consuming calories, they have no insulin to get the sugar from the blood into the body’s cells so they just pee it out. Once a person begins an insulin treatment, they can begin gaining weight. (some desperately need to!) High insulin levels cause a lot more damage than just weight gain. I believe high insulin levels cause a lot of the damage that high blood-sugar is blamed for. Here’s one of the biggest concepts I need you to understand: your blood-sugar can be perfect, but you still may have high insulin levels. Your A1C blood-test does not show your insulin levels. CGMs do not show insulin levels.”

I had a hard time adjusting to the changes in my body despite everyone telling me to just relax and enjoy my new baby. Not only were the changes in what clothes I could wear or how things looked on me, there were physical changes like pain in my feet and inability to walk because of the inflammation and the amount of weight I was carrying. I remember 4 weeks postpartum looking in the mirror thinking oh wow, I didn’t give birth to a 50lb baby. I didn’t recognize myself. When I hit perimenopause at 38 the body changes started with out changing a thing and clothes were getting tighter and my size was getting bigger for no reason at all beyond hormonal changes. Getting pregnant sky rocketed those changes though.

I was determined to find what exactly was going on! Since I have been a health coach for many years in the past I ran all the tests I knew to run on myself (HTMA, DUTCH, GI MAP) with no clear answers. My hormones weren’t terribly out of wack, I have always had high estrogen but this didn’t explain what was going on. I tried everything:

Parasite cleanses

Doing a gut reset

Macro tracking.

Working with a trainer who others in my community had great success with.

Supplements.

Although I am sure all those things helped my health positively nothing was really shifting my weight. If I had one more person tell me just to be consistent, and things took time and to eat and exercise I was going to scream. I am a very disciplined person and have no problem doing those things, UNLESS I am seeing ZERO results then it is very hard to keep going.

Does a tan impact things? When you move locations does your palette change?

In typical seasonal analysis the answer is usually a blatant no. I have come to find that just doesn’t hold true. I think where people live absolutely impacts a persons palette, In fact if I had a client who spent half of the year in New York and half in Hawaii I would give her two different pallet options.

How close you are to the equator determines how much sunshine is available to you what percentage of the year. How much light you take in changes how much light you put out. We observe it every year! For those of you in the North the changes are drastic where people who live in Arizona or Mexico it stays pretty much the same most of the year. People who have darker skin naturally have more eumelanin and pheomelanin and that was all determined by how much sun they were going to be exposed to so in my opinion your culture of origin absolutely impacts what palette I am going to give you.

I have been known to give my clients what is called their “Hawaii Palette” which includes some harmonious options that are a little brighter in chroma they can wear when on a vacation in a tropical place or when they are very tan. The people who this impacts the most are often light skinned people who fall in to a summer category seasonally. Their skin becomes more saturated and warm because the increase in pheomelanin is drastic. So point blank they can pull off warmer and clearer colors when they are tan. I will show you some examples below
