Bonnie Cashin was born in 1908 in Fresno California. Her mother was a dress maker and taught Bonnie about fashion design. By the time she was a teenager, Bonnie began designing costumes for a local dance troupe.

In 1933, she arrived in New York City at the famed Roxy Theatre where a chance introduction led her to Louis Adler of Adler & Adler, one of the country's premier coat and suit manufacturers.

Adler hired Cashin as lead designer, where she created beautifully tailored wool and tweed coats. Just look at how many of her designs are still around secondhand.

Her use of color blocking feels incredibly current. What impressed me most is the level of detail and thoughtful construction. She was no doubt ahead of her time, and this caliber of craft is unfortunately becoming increasingly difficult to find in today’s “I-need-it-asap” fast fashion mentality.

But even 60+ years later, these pieces are still serving.

After nearly a decade with Adler & Adler, Cashin returned back to her home state and began her next chapter in Hollywood, creating costumes for films with big wig studio, 20th Century Fox.

When her time with Hollywood wrapped, she returned to NYC for what would be one of her most recognizable collaborations, working as lead designer at leather house, Sills and Company. Her focus was mixing fabrics and textures like leather and tweed or mohair, and suede with canvas.

Some of the more interesting tidbits I loved learning was her inspiration pulled from ordinary objects.

For instance, she was very inspired by the brass fastenings on convertible cars, so naturally she moved away from traditional zippers and buttons and introduced this feature as an innovative fastener on coats, capes, and later on, a distinct element on Coach handbags.

These signature brass fastenings define the aesthetic of 1960s and 70s vintage Coach bags.

In 1961, husband and wife Miles and Lillian Cahn purchased Coach. They knew they needed to bring someone on who could find them a distinct design identity. Before then, it was a small leather goods company known for beautifully made leather, but nothing else really noteworthy. Lillian had the idea to introduce handbags into the brand’s offering but still needed the right designer to define it.

They turned to Bonnie Cashin, already one of America's most celebrated sportswear designers, and invited her to become Coach's first designer. Bringing her signature blend of practicality and innovation, she transformed everyday hardware into defining design elements, making brass closures and sculptural kiss-locks as beautiful as they were functional.

In my opinion, the Double Kisslock Purse is one of the finest examples of Bonnie Cashin's marriage of quality leather and innovative hardware. With three separate compartments, it’s a little bag that packs a punch.

When I first held this bag and learned its name, I couldn’t help but think of the missed opportunity for Bonnie and Clyde and the Cashin Carry to cross paths. What a collaboration that would have been!

Fortunately, this Bonnie Cashin Double Kisslock Purse has practically been kept in museum-like condition, and I really hope whoever falls in love with it and brings it home, falls a little in love with the baddie that Bonnie Cashin was, too.

As I pull together a roundup of favorites for our Summer Market Extravaganza on June 18th, I’m reminded how lucky I am to be the temporary caretaker of pieces this special.

The theme for the market is reminiscent of a Western mermaid’s liquid dream: flowy natural fibers with subtle texture, sparkly organically shaped accessories, fringe (obviously), turquoise and silver, tooled leather bags, mesh tops, and lots of beads.

So, while there won’t be a First Dibs drop this week, I’m sharing a preview of some of the rare pieces that have recently come through my door, along with a bit of the history behind each one.

I’m constantly asked, “Where do you find your vintage?” And the answer is quite literally everywhere. But over the last year, more and more pieces have come to me through good old-fashioned word-of-mouth, as well as the long-term relationships I’ve built through online platforms.

Just recently (four days ago), one of the most breathtaking items found its way into the shop through a woman who was referred to me via a Facebook group.

After moving from New York City to Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, she began working full-time as a style consultant, helping clients make the most of their existing wardrobes. Through her work, she has had the privilege of encountering some truly iconic collectible pieces- one of which is this rare 1970s Coach Suspender Bag (Style 9490), crafted in the original New York City Coach factory sometime between 1973 and 1975.

And just last weekend, I had the pleasure of taking in this 1980s Escada West Germany superkid mohair sweater with mink trim. Are you kidding me?

It’s one of those time-capsule, après-ski unicorn pieces that feels almost impossible to come across today. The quality of the fabric, the construction, and its near-pristine vintage condition are the kinds of details that really make me giddy.

There’s also something to be said about inheriting pieces from someone’s personal collection rather than finding them at a thrift store. It’s an entirely different caliber of care right off the bat.

Another customer-turned-friend recently came into a handful of antique nightwear pieces from the 1920s. When a small museum in an Illinois suburb began offloading items from storage, she immediately thought of me.

Imagine my jaw hitting the checkout counter when she pulled these beauties from her bag.

And earlier this year, I met a woman on Marketplace through her listing for a 1990s fringe suede coat. Naturally, that turned into me buying more than 60 pieces from her 40-year wardrobe.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that she was in the middle of planning a cross-country move to California, and boy, did she understand the downsizing assignment. We’re talking never-worn 2001 Prada Lace-Up Victorian Leather Boots.

Lately I’ve been down a silk scarf styling rabbit hole- specifically for longer rectangular scarves because styling them isn’t as intuitive to me as the traditional square.

I’ve loved the waist trend we’ve seen a lot of over the past few years, and I especially like that it adds an additional layering element without much effort or weight, and it leans into a softer feminine element I find myself wanting to incorporate around my more masculine foundation pieces. Here are some of the silk scarf styling I’ve been eyeing for the summer. Layering over basics like t-shirts, and fashioning into a belt is probably the easiest, low-level effort- yet, it adds so much pazazz!

To add an additional light layer to your summer styling rolodex, both minimal in effort and in weight- I’ve been stockpiling some beautiful brooches as well. There’s so many ways to zhuzh up your style with something as small as your keys. Remember, we don’t want to add layers that will make you sweat, we’re just looking to add details that give the illusion of layers.

I attended a birthday party Saturday night for a fellow vintage seller in Chicago. Another vintage seller that I absolutely adore was also there. Emily, owner of Hello Vintage and now based in Cleveland, Ohio, was in town for a slew of plans, including her Gunne Sax pop-up party at Lost Girls Vintage in Wicker Park. What a fun day!!

Back at the party, over a dirty martini and some homemade desserts, she mentioned she had a car full of vintage and asked if I wanted to see it the next day. A quite literal private trunk show? Yes, please.

If you’re not following Hello Vintage, you’re welcome. Emily’s eye and fifteen years of collecting runs deep. The amount of silk, suede, leather, and brooches she shared with me would have taken years to accumulate. That’s what I love so much about this group of women I have the privilege of rubbing elbows with. We share a similar clientele and a love for vintage, and I truly believe the best part- my favorite part- of selling vintage is the storytelling behind it. Like, why can’t we share and rotate goods to one another and try to get insanely amazing pieces to their new home?

The Monday (Love you, Mom!) Drop

I wanted this first drop to feel cute and extra special, like a garden party Sunday stroll with mom, with thoughtfully nature-inspired hues woven throughout the palette. I’m especially loving how the vintage brooches from Emily’s trunk show pair so beautifully with the clothing.

On Monday, Mia and I took a proper day trip around the city:

First stop: up north to Edgewater, at the home of our Desigual reps, Michael and Steven, to preview the Fall collection.

Michael and Steven have been married for 20 years and working together on the brand for over 15. They met at a Halloween party!! Cut to now, their impeccably decorated condo sits just steps from the Hollywood beachfront, every wall thoughtfully curated with large-scale art, mid-century glass, and handmade textiles collected from travels around the world. They recently saw Mount Fuji from a cruise ship in Japan, and so I just really want to be their friends. I digress.

As an early afternoon storm rolled in, racks upon racks took over their cozy living room floor (their cat, Phyllis, quietly purred next to us on the couch). It gave Mia and I the chance to feel every piece and make our selects in a quite lovely, intimate setting. Their space set the tone for an inspired afternoon, and boy did I feel inspired.

The Fall collection this year is too good. It’s going to have the West Town art scene in a chokehold, I can only hope. Think rich, moody ombrés layered with hits of neon yellows and purples. I already want to wear all of it.

If You Think Fashion Is Art, Go See This:

After wrapping up, we made our way across town to Hyde Park to visit the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry and catch Crafting in Character: The Costumes of Paul Tazewell exhibit, a free viewing available now through September 7th 2026.

If you have an appreciation for construction, storytelling, or the way creativity is shaped over a lifetime, you’re going to love seeing this up close.

The unsung hero of the exhibit is the wall projection- where Paul narrates his upbringing, his process, and the experiences that shaped his work. It’s one thing to see the finished pieces, but hearing how they came to life adds a completely different layer.

The exhibit moves you through everything: from Paul’s sketches to his prototypes, to fittings, to the stage and red carpet. The work spans different bodies of work such as puppetry, to Broadway, blockbuster films, and the Met Gala. It’s expansive and deeply personal.

There was something so beautiful about hearing how his creativity was nurtured early on in his life. He was encouraged to follow his dreams and to play. Not only do you see that in this exhibit, you can feel it through his story, and how much of that foundation came from his family and environment.

Honestly, the only thing missing was hot buttered popcorn.

Mark Your Calendars - May Is Stacked

I can’t believe we just celebrated three years as a brick and mortar! This year has me feeling much more at home. I’m seeing my people. The regulars. The ones who’ve become friends. The word-of-mouth is real, and I’m really truly madly deeply grateful to feel so at home in my neighborhood.

I’m also (never not) running hot to do more and collaborate with more people I like. And now that April is basically over, I’ve got my eye toward all the summer events at the shop.

Many businesses will be closed for protests, rallies, and walkouts tied to labor and immigration rights. From what I’ve seen, there’s still some confusion around whether small businesses should also close.

From my perspective, we will be open regular hours, and we will be accepting cash payments. We want our communities to thrive with small businesses, local shops, and neighborhood ecosystems. Most of us simply can’t afford to close- and these spaces are what make our neighborhoods feel like home.

If you’re anywhere near the Midwest right now and like me, the last week of weather has been a whiplash of “What the f*ck”, and you’ve entered what I like to call seasonal depression fatigue- laced with a sick joke of the 70-degree anomaly day tease.

On a day last week when going outside felt inconceivable, I indulged in a thick hair mask and didn’t leave the house. Between hot cups of coffee turned room-temp-brew and five episodes of What Went Wrong later, I contemplated taking everything out of my closet and start completely from scratch.

Winter blues and boredom can be overstimulating like that.

But instead of blowing it all up, I started pulling pieces one by one asking myself: What am I actually trying to feel in this new season?

And more importantly: What do I already own that can get me there?

Using the High / Low Theory Your Way:

As Vogue defines it, the high-low theory is “mixing pieces of different price points and formalities within a singular outfit”. And while me and the rest of the population with an appreciation for styling can connect to this concept, it isn’t always a one-size-fits-all formula. It can be more nuanced in terms of contrasting elements work together; Structure with softness. Texture with patterns. Masculine with feminine, etc.

It’s the tension between those elements that creates something interesting and something that feels like mine- not someone else’s cool I’m trying to recreate. I also think we can sometimes get blinded by a perfectly aesthetic and styled look on Pinterest, to the point that we want to just add every item to our carts for a carbon copied version. But that usually doesn’t translate or feel executed the way you hoped it would, now does it?

Finding Your Cool:

To avoid that, I start with what’s already in my arsenal. I know I won’t solve my rut overnight. The goal is to identify items that can be used under a new lens and invigorate the current rotation. Most of the “cool” factor comes down to one thing anyway: how you style what you already have.

And when I’m in a rut, I won’t throw the baby out with the bathwater. I’m not rich enough. Nor do I have the interest to do that. I’ve acquired a lot of gems over the years. And while some of these gems have sat dormant for a bit, I come back to three ideas before I quite literally play with all my things:

1. ENERGY: HOW DO I WANT TO FEEL?

I’ve been craving a more fluid foundation. More monochrome two-piece sets with loose tailoring, a little more pooling on a wide leg trouser, and overall a more masculine leaning base. Then I want to tap my into my feminine side with softer detail pieces.

A sheer oversized or loose layer exposing a laced bra. A structured suit and a cinched waist with a soft ribbon. Something that feels a little delicate and undone.

One of the easiest ways I achieve this is by adding a fun bra and have it intentionally peek out. I’m a sucker for lace delicates; a nip faintly showing through a sheer top (read the room, of course), and letting things feel intentionally imperfect and lived-in.

All three of these items individually promote the feeling I want to achieve, and all are already in my closet:

2. SHAPE: WHAT MOVEMENT DO I WANT TO CREATE?

   As someone who uses Pinterest religiously, I really do like the look of an oversized scarf / sarong over denim. We’ve been seeing more of this the past few years, and I know I’m interested in incorporating more elongated draping with different color ways and patterns. And as mentioned, I want to be more intentional with creating silhouettes that feel more drape-y and undone by using relaxed materials like silks, linen, and cotton.

While I don’t love these particular pants with this outfit, I really love the two top pieces together a lot, and the overall concept is getting somewhere. This is good information! The fact that I can convey the movement goal with pieces I own, and clock some areas that I can do some research on. Each of these pieces are connected to the overall goal of incorporating more movement into my style:

• 1) Fisherman vintage crochet sweater, owned 2 years

• 2) Oversized silk scarf, owned 1 year

• 3) Cream cropped cotton denim pant, owned 2 years

3. EDGE: WHAT MAKES IT MINE?

This is where I see the High/Low theory in it’s literal sense most because… vintage accessories!! These are the things I can add to make the look uniquely mine and give off that Je ne sais quoi.

The vintage accessories I repeat without thinking:

• My vintage cowboy boots - I have a brown pair and black pair on repeat

• Natural stone or vintage wooden bead jewelry - a 1970s influence is typically where I lean

• Vintage scarves - around the waist has been my go-to lately

• Silver statement rings on multiple fingers - I’m nearly full on converted to silver but I love a mixed metal look just as well

• Vintage Western belts - the more tarnish, the better :)

If any part of this exercise resonated, I’d love to hear. There’s something refreshing about turning inward first- into our closets- reflecting on where we’ve been, what’s supported us, and what we’re actually trying to step into, before adding anything new to our carts.

Maybe this is just a long-winded way of saying: always play dress-up. But I feel lighter having done it, and clearer on how I want to show up this season. So, what do you want to feel?

I’ve been extremely fortunate this past 6 months with traveling to Japan, taking a long weekend to Nebraska for the first time, road tripping from Chicago to Florida for nearly a month, and just recently, five glorious sun-soaked days in Mexico City.

Whether it’s a life event bringing us there, or visiting just because, I’m always surveilling the area for like-minded small businesses that draw me in based on the spaces they’ve created. I’m typically scrubbing their instagrams or Google images on their business pages. I always know it’s worth a visit from the guttural “oooh! we gotta go here.”

I’ll explain to anyone who will listen that when they come into the shop, there’s a way I want you to feel when being inside Petals & Jackets. And I’ve found only by becoming a shop owner with a physical space that I am most at peace and ease when I’m curating every corner and creating visual interest for the shopping experience. It’s genuinely therapeutic for me.

And candidly, it’s probably my greatest skill as a creative person. It’s the thing I recognized most about myself but couldn’t put into words until about a year and a half in of owning a space. I love making each corner of the shop feel like a page out of an I Spy Book. You know the 90s nostalgia of those- scrubbing the pages for 8 buttons or 12 marbles? It’s a phrase I’ll use when trying to explain to a customer coming in for the first time, along with wanting you to feel like you’re stepping inside your best friend’s apartment to hang out.

That’s the kind of curiosity I’ve enjoyed creating in the shop- where every nook and cranny is a vignette that just so happens to also be purchasable.

As I’ve been afforded getting away more this year, I’ve found endless inspiration from others and how they draw on that exact same type of storytelling. What they have to offer their communities is pulled from their own experiences, backgrounds, and shared love for the creative process. Here are some of my favorite eye candy moments through travel, and the shops they’re from:

“Hey there, art-loving friends, passing along the below email from my sis. Pretty cool- “free” art if you are interested... Check out the info below and link to the artist website.”

I couldn’t help but lean in and click through. As someone who feels at home around art, and whose modest collection has been built from thrift-store finds and family heirlooms- with a particular affection for nature-scapes and the human form- I was completely entranced by the body of work in front of me. I kept reading, thinking, Free art like this? It seemed too good to be true.

But before we get into that, a little bit about the artist, Ruth Nasca.

Ruth Nasca

Born in 1929, Ruth Nasca began making art when she was just 13 years old. She later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, earned her BFA from the University of Buffalo and Albright Art School in 1951, and received a scholarship to study at Yale under the guidance of Willem de Kooning, Ben Shahn, and Philip Guston.

Ruth went on to raise a family while remaining deeply committed to her art. After earning a Master of Art Education from SUNY Buffalo in 1972, she lived and worked in several cities before settling in East Hampton in 1988, where she became part of the artists’ community. Her work was widely exhibited, and in 2010 one of her paintings was acquired by the permanent collection of Guild Hall in East Hampton. Ruth painted almost every day until her death in 2018.

Paint it Forward

Leaving behind a body of work that spanned nearly seventy years, Ruth created thousands of paintings, all of which were passed down to her daughter, Sally. From that inheritance, Paint It Forward was born. The invitation was simple: Would you like an original Ruth Nasca artwork, free of charge?

Through the project, Sally offered one of her mother’s pieces in exchange for a donation- of any amount, to any charity the recipient chose- asking only that they cover shipping and a small handling fee. Her goal was to move her mother’s work out into the world for others to live with and enjoy, while transforming the exchange into an act that could make a broader difference. How cool is that?

Choosing My Ruth Nasca Original

The website is very robust, organized either by mediums or experiences in Ruth’s life that shaped her work through the decades. For instance, the Travel section is rich with the output of her time spent in Egypt, Sicily, Russia, Turkey, India, Mongolia, Japan, China, Switzerland, Greece and the Netherlands.

What struck me most was learning that she never traveled with a camera. She wanted to see places with her own eyes firsthand and let the scenes imprint themselves. Instead, she collected what each destination offered- paper ephemera specific to its location: torn movie posters, weathered billboards, election flyers pulled from the street. These became her souvenirs, traces of where she had been. She would then take them home and paint something entirely new onto them.

Having just returned home from my honeymoon in Japan, I was especially moved by this section, having come back with my own stack of receipts- like little love letters from Japan. When I came across Cherry Blossom, it was an instant crush, and I had to have it.

I love how clearly the influences of her generation come through in her work, too- with the bold, lush color palettes nodding to Matisse, and the rhythm and fluidity of outlined, elongated faces and figures recalling Modigliani.

I quickly found myself down the rabbit hole of the website, learning more about Ruth and her life- reading stories from her younger years through the lens of her daughter, Sally, with whom I had already begun exchanging a few casual emails with.

With her help, I contacted a handful of participants within my own network to see if they’d be willing to share the pieces they chose and why. “As for what drew me to it: Have you seen the show Lessons in Chemistry? The lead character names her daughter "Mad" because that's the emotion she felt after she was born. This piece reminded me of that scene, 1950s hair-do and all, and I love the honesty of it. Women are expected and assumed to be so many things. Sometimes it's nice to be messily, maddeningly ourselves.”

Imagine walking to the grocery store or sipping a drink with your besties at happy hour, wearing relics from the 1930s- like a modern-day Renaissance painting. Wouldn’t you feel the slightest more badass in that rather than the Khaite dupe beige cardigan thousands of others already own? Wouldn’t you have a slightly more confident strut to your walk knowing that what you have on is on the other end of the spectrum- closer to one-of-a-kind?

Like collecting art for our homes, our closest would slowly and selectively evolve into a body of work that we respect and admire over time. I did this exercise last year in a post called An Ode to the Old where I reflected on everything vintage I acquired in 2024. As with this year, it wasn’t a lot of items (comparatively speaking to the average American who brings in 54-68 pieces per year according to market.us).

What I like about this annual round-up is that it shows me how much my taste and personal style is rooted in both feminine and masculine spaces. It shows me how selective I’ve become with what I allow into my physical space. And I love that I’m seeing I added more color and funk into 2025 vs 2024, which was a goal for me.

You’ll see in each image’s caption below is the cost-per-wear so you can get a sense of how much I paid upfront, how many times I’ve worn it, and what that equates to for an overall per-wear cost.

I intend to care for every piece I brought in this year for as long as I can, and that intention feels especially aligned with the Substack community, where consumption is inherently more thoughtful and selective. Some of the pieces I added this year were more expensive at face value and will make their case over time, while others pay-off immediately. One standout example is my 1980s Bill Bass mohair coat I found last spring at Hello Vintage.

The shop owner was preparing for an out-of-state move and clearing out heavier inventory, and the moment I felt mohair on the sleeve, I knew it was special. I bought it for a mere $20 in as-is condition, with minor wear and tear to the blush pink silk lining- a reasonable repair I would take to my trusted local spot for all cleaning and mending, Fame Cleaners. Even though summer was approaching at the time of finding this coat, I recognized an exceptional piece and price when I saw one. Some things are worth buying out of season, and this was most definitely one of them.

I know I’m not the only one who has been chasing this type of gratification when I find something truly exquisite and in turn get excited to wear it for an ordinary day. After a while, when you focus more on acquiring rather than consuming, you feel compelled to wear your treasures.

There’s an amazing account called Advanced Style, where women of all ages are interviewed sharing their outfits and perspectives on dressing for themselves and no one else. That attitude is what I constantly strive to center my mindset around. They are living the rich life through their style, and they don’t need a reason or an occasion to have it. That’s just who they are. To quote one, “This isn’t dressing up. This is just natural.”

I feel most in my power when I’m dressed for the day in pieces I feel I’ve hand selected and that are tied to a memory of when and where I acquired them. Notice my use of acquired vs bought. It’s intentional. Most of the time, I’m not searching for a 1930’s Edwardian wool cape that evokes a nod to Chloe runway circa 2016, but that’s just the sort of stop-me-in-my-tracks thrill seek I’m dying to get more of in 2026. That’s another feeling *adding to cart* can’t redeem you.

I’m really excited to see what 2026 has in store around consumerism, buying secondhand and acquiring vintage. Especially when using personal style as their north star. Theres especially a bigger shift we’re seeing in the zeitgeist around the importance in investing in quality materials and flipping the bird to the brands that just don’t deliver on that, and I’m so here for it.

And while I do want to acknowledge that sometimes this idea I’m pitching is most certainly not always everyone’s priority, and that the time for the search may not be available, or the initial expense is too high to justify the longevity, I want to say I get it. I’d be a hypocrite if I didn’t acknowledge some of the modern brands I carry in the shop lean more into “elevated basics”.

But the main point is that if we change the behavior by even a fraction of the statistics mentioned above from a fast-fashion consumption perspective, we are truly moving in the right direction. And having fun while doing it!

My last and final fight for the behavior to change is that I double dog dare you to go buy something imperfect. Buy something at a discount because it has a missing button or needs mending.

The trade off of being okay with some repairs when the opportunity of getting a material that is made well and a natural fiber over something that is not built to last, will outrun the convenience ten fold. The saying “buy cheap, buy twice” has always stuck with me for this reason. Being open to items that require mending is the point to keeping true vintage alive and well. Like I said in my original Instagram post on this, the oldest piece I found this year is nearly 100 years old, and with the TLC I intend to give it, it has at least another 100 to go.

I’m in the midst of making the shop feel festive and full of holiday goods for folks shopping this season. But over here, I’m going a bit more inward with a future-focused optimism on the buying choices we make as we approach another new year. I assume (and hope) majority of the community here is as astutely selective with what they buy as they are with the Substacks they subscribe to.

As we’re in the midst of being fed sale after sale after sale, with notifications urging us to stock up (why is Black Friday a month long now?), I’m compiling a batch of hand-selected items into a visual wishlist. The intention is to encourage sustainable, mindful acquiring. Like most people who enjoy fashion and personal style, I view my closet as a collection I’m continuously building. Nothing comes in that future me won’t look back on fondly.

The end of the year is typically a time for reflection and for taking inventory of ourselves as a whole. So this felt like a timely way to share how I’m doing just that. Plus, I’m a visual learner, and I love a mood board.

As a secondhand and vintage shop owner, I’m constantly getting asked “Where do you find everything?” followed by, “How do you decide what gets to go on the floor?” I love getting asked this question. Because as opposed to being mysteriously gatekeepy, it’s a very longwinded educational answer full of anecdotal stories and how I’ve evolved my process since starting to seriously shop secondhand and vintage nearly seven years ago.

I want to break down my answer here in more detail, because it’s a process that’s always changing but as time has gone on, I’ve created a set of standards I keep in my back pocket anytime I’m looking at an item and questioning if it fits within the Petals & Jackets ethos.

So here go…

1). Who Is She? The Women I Source For

I’m shopping for the modern woman who delights in conscious consumption, accessible luxury & elevated living.

My eye is drawn to pieces that are either a statement on their own or can tell a story layered and styled with other items. Foundational pieces like a secondhand silk brown tank top from Chicos is just as important to me as the vintage Christian Dior embroidered lace tiered skirt. Both are equal in terms of getting through the door. Because I know my client is not only shopping for her every day, she’s also shopping for that best friend’s destination wedding, that milestone birthday celebration, and the last minute RSVP she decided to say yes to. And she is not above a label. She takes ego out of the room and doesn’t judge a book by it’s secondhand department store tag.

So how do I know if a piece is worthy of fitting into this spectrum of events? It’s a level of priority in short.

2). WHAT: Fabrics, Then Function, Then Fun. These Are My Priorities- In That Order

When you’re out sourcing on your own, my first piece of advice is to always make a list of what you’re actually looking for. Take inventory on your closet before you leave and be purposeful with your goal for the day. Then put a value system together for yourself of what you will and won’t allow into your closet. Will future you be proud of you for getting that? For me, I break this down into three easy digestible guardrails that have saved me hours at the thrift and space in my closet.

Shop our latest Fall vintage & secondhand staples

#1) FABRIC: CLOTHING THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME

Natural fibers: like cotton, hemp, linen, ramie, raffia

Animal fibers: like wool, alpaca, cashmere, leather, mohair, angora

Animal secretion fibers: like silk

Keeping this value at the top of my priority list has probably saved me thousands of dollars. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve turned my nose up at pieces that looks cool from a distance but when you touch it you just know it’s not the quality you want, and it’s probably in the thrift store because someone likely wore it once and knew they’d never reach for it again. This is a really sad reality of how our world is shopping. More on THAT another time.

#2) FUNCTION: CLOTHING THAT WORKS FOR YOU

I’d say 80-90% of what I bring into the shop is function-forward, meaning more everyday wearables. But to my point earlier, I will never say no to a knock-out sequin dress or a piece that’s made of polyester.

I don’t mean to personally victimize this synthetic fabric, but polyester has a bad rep. And for some reasons, I can understand why. But on the other hand polyester is a great performance fabric. It’s lightweight, durable, and keeps you cool and dry. It resists stretching and shrinking, and maintains its shape. These are qualities that natural fibers can’t always match. Which is why I’m not opposed to bringing pieces like this into shop if it’s also made well.

I prioritize materials and construction techniques that support movement, breathability, and durability. Clothes that perform in real life and in their design. A functional piece should feel as good at the end of the day as it did when you put it on.

I look for features like:

• Ease of wear: comfortable cuts that move with the body

• Weather adaptability: fibers that insulate, breathe, or wick moisture depending on the need (love a vintage LL Bean raincoat amiright!?)

• Longevity: well-made seams, reinforced stress points, and materials that age well

• Low-maintenance care: pieces that can be spot treated are always a plus (But I do recommend getting to know your local dry cleaner for pieces that need special attention)

• Pockets, closures, adjustability: the small details that make a piece not just wearable, but have utility

Whether it’s a linen shirt that keeps you cool in heat, or a wool sweater that regulates warmth without bulk, functional garments earn their place in the shop through performance, not just aesthetics.

#3) FUN: BECAUSE GIRLS JUST WANNA!

Lastly, my eye is trained and intended to find you the gems. The things you wish your mom held onto in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. That Y2K Caché beaded midi dress that was constructed to fit the female form and snatch you in all the right places.

I have a deep appreciation for the female form and I can spot a badass silhouette a mile away. The way something drapes and hangs on the body is what makes you literally glow up when you try it on. Nothing makes me giddier than someone trying on a stand-out piece and proudly walking out of the fitting room to show me. The music is on, the joy is all over the room. It’s in the bag.

My shop is meant to feel like you’re stepping into your best friend’s apartment looking for a top to borrow for the night, and I intentionally designed the interior of the shop to feel cozy and safe so you can enjoy the process of getting curious and trying new things. It’s all about finding pieces that make you feel like yourself with an elevated edge.

#3). WEAR (we love a pun!): The Places I’ve Started To Lean Into Most

Since opening the shop, I’ve become so much more knowledgable about where to source, what is and is not worth my time, and how to make the most of a town I’m passing through:

#1) PHYSICAL STORES (In order of priority)

• Consignment Shops: If you want to quickly find quality pieces and are willing to pay a little bit more money than a traditional thrift store, you are going to want to hit up consignment shops in the suburbs- away from major downtown areas. Why? Cities are congested with fast fashion more often than not, in my experience. It’s a waste of my time most of the time, so I very rarely thirft in the city.

• Antique Malls: If you’re looking for true vintage (50 years or more), then you will have a blast at an antique mall. Don’t get discouraged if there aren’t a lot of booths with clothing. You have to be open minded at an antique mall. If your list has jewelry and accessories for the home, you’re going to love the types of treasures you can uncover here. You will need hours of time, as most antique malls are thousands of square footage and hundreds of vendors. Get your iced coffee, find the nearest bathroom upon entering, and put on a podcast. Your anxiety will melt away. Hot tip: When you’re at the check-out counter, ask your sales associate if they have a state Antique Mall map. Most of them do. I’ve collected Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan’s maps so far and keep them in our car’s glove compartment.

• Thrift Stores: I love a good thrift in an unknown town. My husband and I will typically make a day date to venture out of the city and head an hour or two into a random town and see what their local thrift has to offer. Prices are seriously cheap, but you have to be ready to look at every single piece in hopes that 1 out of every 40 pieces may yield something really cool. From a time perspective, this is usually not my favorite way to source, but it is fun when you have the right attitude and a list. My favorite thrift store chain is St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store, which is nationwide. I tend to find that they are better organized and super friendly!

Shopping secondhand is incredibly important, and I love that it’s become more popular over the past decade, especially thanks to social media. It’s a trend that actually feels positive and impactful. But more than just a trend, I believe we need a real shift in the way we think about shopping. My hope is that the advice I share helps make secondhand shopping feel more personal to you. Even Pinterest launched a Thrift Shop this summer to highlight vintage style, which is such a cool step forward. I really hope it sticks!

Personal style is the core of P&J, and I know the kind of joy that comes across your face when you find a piece that feels like it was made just for you. That’s why I get out there. I source with the hope that you’ll pull something off the rack and think, “Wait… is this me?” and then try it on and realize, “This is mine.” That moment, that spark- that’s the kind of fun I live for.

So I have a personal Instagram account, and then I have my business account (@petalsandjackets). Earlier this year, I scrubbed my business account to keep it focused on like-minded small businesses, brands, and people who inspire me. It helped the feed stay refined and less redundant of what I was seeing. And then my personal page remained the space I could catch up with the lives of my friends and family. Side note: does anyone here still have SnapChat? I only have it for my best friends from high school and I love it. We use it to send funny FML moments and to see their kids doing cute and funny things.

Second side note: There’s a great How I Built This on SnapChat and how the founder, Evan Spiegel wanted the platform to be a place where people could casually stay in touch on a day-to-day with loved ones without needing to hop on the phone. And as an introvert that gets tired from talking too long, I personally loved that tidbit. Okay last side note: apparently Zuck made him a multi-billion dollar offer years ago for Snap, to which Evan said “no thanks!” I fu*king love that for Evan. He believed his product had the potential to go further- to transcend how people interact with the app. He was a true believer in both his brand and his vision.

I digress, but the reason I bring this up is because I like listening to podcasts, especially ones that spotlight founders and makers: people who have an idea and bring it to life. That spirit of creativity and follow-through always excites me.

And today I want to highlight a handful of small women-owned businesses in the vintage and secondhand space that I deeply admire and feel inspired by. They're each disrupting the scene in their own distinct way- not just by curating beautiful pieces, but by redefining what sustainable, personal style can look like.

They make not buying into fast fashion (did you see THIS?! WTAF) feel like a revolutionary middle finger to overconsumption and big box retailers. They make it cool to buy slow, buy with intention, and take pause in finding what personal style means to each of their followers. Rather than blending into trends, they offer something so much more meaningful: a shopping experience rooted in individuality. Their collections are for the modern woman who wants to look chic and in harmony with herself- through her own lens.

1) Rare.Fien (Nashville, TN)

Based in Nashville, Rare Fien is rooted in intentionality, artistry, and slow fashion. I remember coming across her page and stopping in my tracks- I was in awe, genuinely expanded by the realization of what strong production value can do for already incredible vintage pieces. From ready-to-wear to bridal, the founder, Larena, curates a luxurious mix of clothing, jewelry, and homewares that seamlessly fit into modern-day style.

Beyond the one-of-a-kind pieces, her real gift lies in storytelling through merchandising. A flat lay of a vintage sterling silver seashell bracelet becomes delicious eye candy when wrapped around a butter knife- say what?! She brings an editorial eye to vintage in a way that feels both elevated and wildly imaginative. Her work is a reminder that how we present something can shift its entire context.

Watching the way she brings her vision to life has deeply influenced how I think about styling and creative direction for my own shop. She’s a force who makes you want to push your craft further, not by chasing trends, but by honing your point of view. See for yourself.

2). Marci Maxine Vintage (Chicago, IL)

Named as an ode to her grandmother, Chicago-based wardrobe stylist Elizabeth Kelly founded Marci Maxi Vintage in 2021. Elizabeth’s fascination with vintage and secondhand pieces stems from her love of color, unexpected details, and quality craftsmanship. The result of her vivid imagination is a kaleidoscope of saturated colors, textures, and patterns. It’s an editorial daydream that’s been featured in publications locally and around the world.

I’ve even had the honor of participating in a vintage photoshoot with her that involved our dogs(!!). And this past summer, we collaborated on a dreamy beach shoot with Chicago artist The Brie Show, who prints her artwork on silk scarves. It was a stunning collision of talent, textiles, and creativity, all under one insanely hot sun.

Elizabeth and Brie currently have a pop-up space on Chicago Avenue, running through September. If you get the chance to visit in person, I highly recommend it. Elizabeth is an alchemist of curation and in-store merchandising, and Brie’s paintings align perfectly- seriously, so perfectly. With the vibrant aesthetic of the collection nestled among canvases that echo its energy, the space feels like a living mood board. It’s a match made in vintage heaven, and one I hope sticks around for good.

3). Newell Vintage (Phoenix, AZ)

A not-so-newcomer to the vintage social community, Madelyn Newell King began as an online reseller, quickly building an impressive following thanks to her sharp eye for chic, ready-to-wear pieces and her unwavering consistency on social media, posting fresh finds with a sort of day-in-the life / behind-the-scenes look into being a business owner and vintage reseller.

She has an unwavering talent of finding thrifted pieces and matching them to a Pinterest inspiration lookalike, creating a shopping experience for her customers that provides them styling advice for an item before they decide to snag it. So simple, yet brilliant.

This spring, she took a major leap and opened her very own brick-and-mortar shop in Phoenix. The space reflects her polished, approachable aesthetic with a price-point that doesn’t compromise on style. The space marks a new chapter not just for her brand, Newell Vintage, but for the vintage community she’s helping to shape in-store and on her website. She also started her own Substacks series that unpacks her journey of opening a shop and all the things in between. I couldn’t relate more to some of the things she’s posted- the interior design DIYs (wine and flops), the mishaps, the learnings, and all the feels of dealing with people being people (iykyk in retail, the customer is actually not always right). It’s certainly not glamorous all the time and I love that she’s willing to share this side of the process with us.

I’ve always felt the need to shout out the females in my orbit who are doing cool work through their own perspectives.

Does it ever feel competitive? To me, not really. I think the word I get in my gut sometimes is a healthy dose of envy. Envy is typically seen as a bad thing, but really it’s an emotional charge of good information. It’s showing you that your capable of more than you’re currently doing and that whatever craft you see them honing is within reach. They’re just working harder behind the scenes on that thing. All of these women are expanders for me, and whether they know it or not, they’ve influenced how I approach my work every day.

I can’t remember the last time I stepped inside a major big box chain like Zara (don’t get me wrong I most definitely thrift these types of brands, especially basic pieces like tank tops and tees), but how can I prioritize giving my money to places like that when people like this are curating one of a kind gems for me? I encourage you to take a conscious look at the vintage resellers in your feed, start following the accounts above, and treat yourself to a piece they’ve sourced for you. It’s so much more fun to shop this way.

Meet Frankie:

Today’s reveal is all about Frankie Master, a Chicago-based singer/songwriter whose style evolution lives somewhere between 1960s French insouciance and '90s off-duty effortlessly cool. She’s a little Jane Birkin, a little backstage hype girl at Lilith Fair.

Frankie was raised on a soundtrack of Motown, show tunes, early 2000s pop, and ’70s folk rock, all while studying classical piano and filling journals with her thoughts for years. That layered, eclectic upbringing shaped a sound that’s uniquely hers: a blend of indie, soul, rock, and pop. Her music is a unique blend of indie, soul, rock, and pop. In turn, her personal style mirrors this: effortlessly cool, a little offbeat, sleek and minimal, with a touch of funk.

Frankie celebrated a birthday earlier this summer and was gifted a style parcel by her partner- we love when this happens! (Quick lil hot take: there is nothing sexier than a gift with some umph and depth from your person- just sayin!). And I was absolutely honored for the opportunity to curate a wardrobe refresh for Frankie. I love offering my parcel clients a range of options; it makes the process more fun and gives them agency in deciding what they'll ultimately take home.

While comfort is always king, I also kept her work life in focus. Between working at an events space and her career as a musician, her schedule stays fluid, meaning she might go from a daytime shift straight into an evening gig. That kind of lifestyle calls for outfits that can stretch across both scenarios.

So, my brief was clear: unexpected basics with the ability to evolve throughout her day.

I know this might seem direct and frankly, a bit harsh- but I’ve been talking more and more about this topic around friends and other small business owners, so I felt like sharing my perspective with all of you.

The paid influencer, as we all know, has saturated the Internet. You know the ones- “let me put you onto…”, or “you’re gonna wanna head over to this new hidden..” and “there’s a reason this is going viral…”

And, I swear, if I see one more influencer hyping an “omakase experience” that’s literally just a well-done restaurant serving quality food at normal prices… I’m done.

I can only assume I’m not the only one who thinks to themselves “but you’re getting paid for this, why should I trust you?” or “you just showed me a spread of the food on the menu? I haven’t gained one ounce of newsworthy information I couldn’t find by googling the menu or walking into the place myself. What value have you added?”

Not all influencers are the same. There are a lot of people with high follower counts putting out thoughtful, subjective information that doesn’t feel like a script. But a lot of the internet is seeing through the others and starting to mute, or abandon altogether. Instead, we’re turning toward platforms like Substack- (thank god for Substack. DON’T EVER CHANGE!) where writers write because they care and folks like myself get to consciously curate what’s being served, leaning more niche and less masked paid ad. To be blunt, we’re ditching the doom scroll influencer.

I opened Petals & Jackets in April of 2023, which in my opinion was already when the cringe was setting in of seeing the same 10 people go to the same shop or restaurant in the same week to promote the same 3-4 things. Yet, so many people told me I should reach out to the same batch of people in my area doing those videos mentioned above and have them come promote the shop.

I come from big advertising, and I worked on several CPG brands where UGC (user generated content) and influencers were a huge part of the campaign strategy. Back in 2016 through 2019 is when this strategy was at it’s prime- before the algorithm overhaul and before authenticity became so performative. I genuinely feel like I was part of a new way of thinking. And it worked- but only for the right brands at the right time.

Back then, I remember working on a rebrand for a tobacco rolling paper company. We partnered with micro-influencers (30,000–50,000 followers each), and combined, they delivered over 1 million impressions. Our creative team had a blast. These folks were out in nature camping, using the product in their daily lives, and simply sharing it. It wasn't a forced product pitch or a recitation of RTBs (reasons to believe). It looked like life, not a campaign. And the creative was absolutely stunning. I still think about the merch we had comped, ready to go into production. (Unfortunately the client was terrible and nothing went anywhere.. hehe haha, fun times!)

I digress, but why I’m sharing this anecdote with you is because of the strategy and thinking behind it. It felt way more natural than what you see today in the endless Zara hauls, the same NYC elite girly promoting the same lip tint and bag, and the same person sitting in the front seat of their car unveiling the same 6 new Crumbl cookie flavors.

So especially with this in mind, I knew that the strategy could be successful, but only for the right brand and at the right time. It’s been a running cliche for years in the op-ed zeitgeist that influencer marketing is a bubble that will pop one day. And back in April of 2023 something in my gut said, this isn’t the vibe of P&J. I’m staying adverse to that strategy as long as I can to see what organic growth looks like.

And the results? It’s an incredibly slow, intentional, and meaningful burn, and we just recently surpassed only 3,000 followers on Instagram. But I love every single one of you and I think that’s a huge milestone for someone who started with just 2 followers (shout out to my mom and my sister).

There’s a different way to go about acquiring genuine interest and growth in your brand. And it takes a lot more time and patience, along with commitment to yourself and what you’re building. Saying no to influencers and walking away from TikTok for good are ways I’ve built the right kind of boundaries around my business. In my last Field Notes, “Every test sharpens the vision” I talk more about boundaries in business and protecting my peace at all costs. I think deciding to walk away from TikTok was the best thing for my business, but more importantly my mental health. Being a business owner in the digital age is completely different than it was 20 years ago, and you often find yourself in an anxiety induced keeping-up-with-the-jones mentality when you’re trying to grow. But you can’t grow when you’re burnt out. I immediately slapped myself on the wrist in February of this year and haven’t logged back onto the app since.

Believing in myself and what I’m putting out into the world is the thing I’m choosing to focus on. I focus less on brand awareness, and more on resonance, and the feeling I can bring to just one loyal customer. Then 5 loyal customers. Then 10. And so on. The person who loves what I’m doing, loves the feeling they get from the service I’m providing, that’s a customer for life. An influencer speaking on your behalf, cannot do that for you. For these reasons, I’m out. Respectfully.

If someone with clout comes in on their own free will, cool. If they don’t because they genuinely have no interest in seeing my offering, that’s cool too.

While I have no doubt influencer culture and platform specific strategies won’t disappear into thin air, I do think the masses are waking from a decade of being under some sort of bizarre spell, and we’re craving more relatable, lived-in messy lives that feel less like a manipulated, supposedly real aesthetic. “These days, being raw and relatable is more powerful than being polished.” a quote from Vice article, Influencer Culture Is Finally Dying. We Won’t Miss It.

Being a slow burn means I’m playing the long game, and that’s where I feel real legacy lives. Not in trends. Not in beating the algorithm. But with focus and showing up as the person behind the brand.

It’s 100% my sarcastic sense of humor when I say this next bit, but here I go.. I am not looking for influencers, I want to be the influencer.

After nearly two and a half years of owning a brick and mortar, a lot of faces have come through the doors of 1105 North Ashland Avenue. And I’ve met some seriously cool people along the way- creatives within the community, first-time customers who become regulars, and kind strangers who remind me why I built Petals & Jackets in the first place.

Of course, with foot traffic and different energy exchanges, not every interaction is easy, and not every opportunity is a fit. That’s where redefining boundaries has become an essential tool in running my business. Not in a rigid or defensive emotional way, but as operational guardrails that allow the business to run smoother by making expectations clear and keeping the chaos in check. When I can manage them like mental levers of standards, it makes me feel so much more in control of what I can and can’t afford, rather than feel guilty.

Being a business owner, even in its hardest moments, is still the most thrilling thing I’ve ever done. There’s the freedom to build something that feels like yours, the pride in your ideas taking shape and seeing people enjoy them. And then, of course, the obstacles no one warns you about. Some days are smooth. Other days feel like a pop quiz you didn’t study for.

You start to realize that the tests come in all forms: people who ask for more than they should, collaborations that sound great on paper but fall flat, or moments where you're forced to choose between protecting your peace or pleasing someone else. They’re not always dramatic, but they’re constant. And they tell you a lot about what you’re building, who it’s for, and who it’s not.

The longer I do this, the less reactive I’ve become and the less anxious I get about someone not liking my space. You have to really let that shit go to move things forward. And you have to pay attention to the people who come into your home and either make it feel warmer, or cast a shadow over it. Lean into all of the things that test you because it’s all good information you can quietly take in, clock, and move forward on.

Meet Joie:

Joie and I go way back. She was my very first work friend and unofficial mentor when I was just starting out in the advertising world circa 2013. Right away she taught me that style didn’t have to be safe or serious. It could be fun, curious, creative, and out there. Her approach to getting dressed made an impression I’ve never forgotten: that you can use fashion to tell a story before you even say a word.

So when she reached out for a parcel to help her take on a slate of high-profile (but not too formal) LA events this August, I couldn’t wait to dive in. Joie opted for the 5-piece package (aka The Bardot), and I sent her a curated selection of 11 pieces to choose from.

I’m a little bit country. I’m a little bit mermaid.

I spent my childhood between quiet fields in rural Ohio and our family lake house on Devil’s Lake, just across the state line in Woodstock Township, Michigan. Naturally, as I began conceptualizing what the shop would hold, I gravitated toward an aesthetic that blends rugged terrain with the feminine emotion of the Water element—pulling mostly from memory and mood. It’s intuitive, nonlinear. Less about what’s trending, and more about: What do I recall being surrounded by when I was young that made me feel safe and at home?

Last week, I was lucky enough to have an extended stay back home with my entire family (more on that in another post). It brought me back to those roots, and of course, we mapped out the route home to include stops along Antique Mall Trail on Route 12. It’s known for its clusters of historic shops, preserving treasures for miles and miles along the highway. The same trail is home to Michigan’s longest garage sale- happening in just about a week, from August 8th to August 10th! If you have a chance to take a day trip through, I highly recommend it and guarantee you’ll find something you can’t get on Amazon.

I always finagle my way into a sourcing trip when the opportunity of a road trip presents itself. Like many of you who love the thrill of finding unique old things, you’ve probably noticed that getting even just an hour outside of a major city really reaps its benefits.

How I prepare:

I make a list of things I’m hoping to find. It doesn’t mean I’m going to find those things by any means, but it helps my mind stay focused, because if you’ve ever walked into a 23,000 square foot Antique Mall without a list, you’ll know the exact mix of thrill and panic that can wash over you.

I wanted to focus on trinkets and accessories on this trip. Reason being: we were on limited time, and this route leaned more toward true antiques, so I knew clothing would be a harder line item to check off.

Tip: The shorter and more precise the list, the better the result (in my experience).

The List:

• Summer and transitional jewelry

• Small home trinkets with character

• Seashells for the shop (I always merchandise with these)

What I found:

I’m still in full blown vacation-girl-summer when sourcing. My absolute favorite items from this haul has got to be the giant vintage mother of pearl fish necklace and the vintage Mexico fish bottle opener. Lately, I’ve also been creating preview videos for clients where I walk through a curated range of items based on their style goals, allowing them to choose their final pieces from an expanded selection.

Meet Mallory:

Mallory works in tech and spends most of her time in executive-level meetings. Her current style leans minimalist, but she felt her wardrobe had become a little outdated and unstylish. With a full transition to remote work on the horizon, she wanted help building a camera-ready wardrobe that still feels polished, thoughtful, and chic.
