The precise trigger for the collapse is still being investigated, and it would be premature to attribute this individual event solely to climate change. Yet it has occurred against an unmistakable regional backdrop. The glaciers of the Hindu Kush Himalaya are shrinking rapidly as the climate warms. New assessments published in 2026 indicate that the rate of ice loss across the region has doubled since 2000, with as much as 27 metres of ice thickness lost in some records since 1975.

There are immediate reasons why this should concern us. Retreating glaciers can destabilise mountain landscapes, contribute to the formation and expansion of glacial lakes and increase the danger from avalanches, debris flows and glacial lake outburst floods. At the same time, the disappearance of mountain ice threatens something on which an extraordinary proportion of humanity depends: water.

The Hindu Kush Himalaya is often called the Third Pole because it contains the greatest concentration of snow and ice outside the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Stretching some 3,500 kilometres across Asia, its mountains feed ten major river systems, including the Indus, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Mekong, Yangtze and Yellow rivers. Around two billion people live within the river basins ultimately supported by this vast frozen reservoir.

As the glaciers retreat, the consequences for water and food security will become increasingly serious. Initially, additional melting can increase river flows and flood risks. Eventually, however, a smaller reservoir of ice means less dependable meltwater, particularly during dry seasons when communities and agriculture need it most. These mountains are not simply spectacular landscapes. They are part of the water infrastructure of civilisation.

But there is another consequence of disappearing snow and ice that receives far less attention.

We are losing the Earth’s natural albedo.

Snow and ice are among the brightest natural surfaces on the planet. They reflect a substantial proportion of incoming sunlight back towards space before that solar energy can be absorbed as heat. Replace a bright glacier or snowfield with darker rock, soil, vegetation or water and more sunlight is absorbed.

That difference matters enormously when it occurs across vast areas.

This is the ice–albedo feedback, one of the fundamental amplifying mechanisms within the climate system. Warming melts snow and ice. The darker surface exposed beneath absorbs more solar radiation. That additional absorbed energy contributes to further warming, which encourages still more melting.

The process is therefore not simply one in which a warmer planet loses ice. Losing the ice can itself contribute to additional warming.

We tend to associate this feedback most strongly with the Arctic, where declining sea ice and snow cover are transforming the energy balance of the high northern latitudes. Yet the same physical principle operates wherever reflective snow and ice disappear, including across the enormous high-altitude cryosphere of the Third Pole.

This is why the loss of glaciers must be understood as more than a story about rising sea levels, disappearing landscapes or future water shortages. It is part of a much larger transformation of the Earth’s surface.

For thousands of years, glaciers, seasonal snow, sea ice and ice sheets have acted as enormous natural reflectors. They are effectively components of the Earth’s thermal regulation system. We are now dismantling portions of that system.

And we are doing so while the planet is already accumulating excess energy.

Earth’s energy imbalance is the difference between the solar energy the planet absorbs and the heat it radiates back into space. As greenhouse gases impede the escape of infrared radiation, less energy leaves the Earth system than enters it. That excess energy accumulates overwhelmingly in the oceans, but also warms the atmosphere and land and melts the cryosphere.

The disappearance of reflective surfaces adds another dimension to that imbalance. As the planet becomes darker, it can absorb more sunlight. The greenhouse effect and albedo loss are different physical processes, but both influence the fundamental problem confronting us: too much energy is being retained within the Earth system.

This distinction matters because climate policy remains overwhelmingly framed as a carbon management problem.

Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions remains essential. Every additional tonne of carbon dioxide avoided prevents additional long-lived forcing of the climate system. Protecting forests, restoring ecosystems and developing responsible means of removing carbon from the atmosphere also have important roles to play.

But emissions reductions do not instantly remove the excess heat already accumulated in the Earth system. Nor do they automatically restore the reflective glaciers, snowfields and sea ice that have already disappeared.

That leaves us confronting an increasingly uncomfortable question.

What replaces the cooling function of the natural albedo we are losing?

There is no single intervention capable of replacing the extraordinary complexity of the Earth’s cryosphere, and protecting remaining glaciers by rapidly reducing warming must remain the priority. But we should also recognise that increasing surface reflectivity can become part of climate adaptation and, at sufficient scale, part of a broader effort to address the planetary energy imbalance.

The first opportunities are immediately practical.

Our cities are filled with dark roofs, roads and other surfaces that absorb solar radiation and become extremely hot. Increasing the reflectivity of appropriate roofs, pavements and other built surfaces can reduce solar heat absorption, lower surface and indoor temperatures and reduce demand for air conditioning. In regions already experiencing dangerous heat, these are not abstract climate interventions. They can protect people today.

Agriculture presents another challenge. Crops are increasingly being exposed to temperatures beyond those under which many varieties evolved and agricultural systems developed. Carefully designed reflective and shading systems can potentially reduce thermal stress on crops, soils, livestock and agricultural workers while reducing evaporative losses.

Water resources may also require new forms of protection. Reservoirs, irrigation systems and other critical infrastructure will increasingly operate under hotter conditions with greater evaporation and more extreme weather. Reflective and radiative approaches deserve serious scientific investigation as part of a much broader adaptation strategy.

Beyond these local applications lies the much larger scientific question of whether humanity can safely increase the reflectivity and thermal emissivity of appropriate parts of the Earth’s surface at scales capable of producing a measurable cooling effect.

This should not be confused with putting reflective particles into the atmosphere. Surface-based approaches are fundamentally different because they can be geographically targeted, measured, maintained, modified or removed. They can also potentially provide immediate local adaptation benefits while contributing incrementally to a wider cooling objective.

The scale required to influence the planetary energy balance would be enormous, and claims about global cooling must therefore be subjected to rigorous measurement, modelling, life-cycle analysis and environmental assessment. But the scale of the problem itself is enormous. That is precisely why this research should be undertaken now rather than after still more of the Earth’s natural reflective surfaces have disappeared.

The warning from the Third Pole is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. ICIMOD’s assessments indicate that glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya could lose a very large fraction of their present volume this century under high-emissions pathways. The consequences would cascade through water supplies, agriculture, ecosystems, energy systems and communities across Asia. (ICIMOD)

Yet even those enormous human consequences represent only part of the story.

Every retreating glacier exposes another darker surface. Every reduction in persistent snow cover changes how sunlight interacts with the land beneath it. Every lost area of reflective ice represents a small change in the way our planet processes incoming solar energy.

Individually, these changes may appear insignificant. Across mountain ranges, polar regions and decades, they accumulate.

The Nepal–Tibet disaster is therefore a terrible reminder of two interconnected dangers. One is immediate and visible: unstable glaciers, violent floods, destroyed infrastructure and lives lost within minutes. The other unfolds more quietly across decades: the progressive disappearance of one of the natural mechanisms that has helped regulate Earth’s temperature.

We need to confront both.

We must reduce greenhouse-gas emissions as rapidly as practically possible. We must protect and restore the natural systems that remove carbon. We must prepare communities for the warming that can no longer be avoided.

But mitigation and adaptation alone should not prevent us from asking the physical question at the centre of the climate problem: how do we reduce the amount of excess heat accumulating within the Earth system?

As natural albedo declines, increasing the reflectivity of appropriate human-controlled surfaces deserves to become a serious component of that discussion. From cooler roofs and cities to agricultural protection and, potentially, much larger surface-cooling programmes, we need to investigate how reflective and radiative technologies can protect communities while contributing to restoration of the Earth’s energy balance.

The Third Pole is melting. The Arctic is changing. Glaciers are retreating around the world. We are watching the planet’s natural reflective shield diminish in real time.

Cutting emissions can slow the forces destroying that shield. It cannot immediately recreate what has already vanished.

That is why the climate challenge can no longer be understood solely as a question of how much carbon humanity emits. It is also a question of energy: how much enters the Earth system, how much leaves it, and what happens when the natural surfaces that once reflected part of that energy back towards space disappear.

If the Earth is losing its natural albedo, we need to understand how much cooling we are losing with it, how much can still be protected, and where carefully designed increases in surface reflectivity can compensate for some of that loss.

The longer we wait, the more difficult that task becomes. The objective must be not merely to slow the rate at which the planet warms, but ultimately to restore its energy balance before irreversible changes in the cryosphere and other critical Earth systems move beyond our ability to influence them.

It is a remarkable part of the climate story because it challenges the way we tend to think about geoengineering. The debate is usually presented as something that lies ahead of us, a moment when humanity might make the extraordinary decision to interfere deliberately with the Earth’s energy balance. Yet we have been interfering with it for generations. We simply did not set out to do so.

The effect was not small. The best current estimate is that human produced aerosols exert a net cooling influence of around 1.1 watts per square metre compared with preindustrial conditions. NASA has estimated that air pollution has made the planet around 0.4°C cooler than it would otherwise have been. There is considerable uncertainty around the precise figure, particularly because the interactions between aerosols and clouds remain one of the more difficult parts of the Earth’s energy budget to quantify, but the central point is extraordinary enough. The warming we have experienced is not the full warming effect of the greenhouse gases we have emitted. Part of that warming has been hidden from us by another consequence of industrialisation.

Evidence of this accidental cooling appeared in one of the strangest environmental observations of the twentieth century. From the 1950s into the 1980s, measurements from around the world showed that less sunlight was reaching the Earth’s surface. One influential analysis estimated that surface solar radiation declined by approximately 2.7 per cent per decade over the period it examined, equivalent to around 0.51 watts per square metre each year and approaching 20 watts per square metre over several decades. The Sun itself had not weakened. The atmosphere between the Sun and the ground had changed.

The phenomenon became known as global dimming. As the postwar industrial economy expanded, coal combustion, power generation, manufacturing and transport poured enormous quantities of sulphur dioxide and particulate pollution into the lower atmosphere. Some of these particles scattered or absorbed incoming sunlight. Sulphate aerosols were particularly effective at reflecting solar radiation. They also interacted with clouds, providing additional particles around which water droplets could form. Under many conditions, this produced clouds containing greater numbers of smaller droplets, making them brighter and more reflective.

Industrial civilisation had accidentally constructed something resembling a planetary sunshade.

The fingerprints of this period can also be seen in the history of global temperature. The planet warmed noticeably during the early decades of the twentieth century, but from roughly the 1940s through to the 1970s that warming slowed considerably, with some records showing periods of slight cooling. Aerosols were not the only reason. Natural variability and volcanic activity also affected temperatures. Nevertheless, the enormous growth of industrial sulphur emissions and aerosol pollution formed an important part of the explanation. By the 1970s, greenhouse forcing had become sufficiently powerful that temperatures began rising strongly despite the cooling influence of aerosols.

That last point is easy to overlook. The modern rise in global temperature did not take place against a climatically neutral atmosphere. It happened while another category of human emissions was actively reflecting additional sunlight towards space and changing clouds in ways that produced substantial cooling. The greenhouse effect was becoming powerful enough to overwhelm our own accidental sunshade.

Then the experiment changed.

Across Europe and North America, governments began tackling the terrible health and environmental consequences of dirty air. Sulphur emissions were reduced, industrial pollution was regulated and fuels became cleaner. Acid rain declined. Urban air improved. These were major public health achievements and there should be no suggestion that maintaining lethal air pollution would ever have been a sensible response to climate change.

The atmosphere, however, responds to physics rather than policy intentions. As sulphur pollution declined, so did part of its cooling effect. Skies became clearer and more sunlight began reaching the surface. Measurements across Europe and many other Northern Hemisphere locations showed the long period of dimming beginning to reverse around the mid 1980s. Scientists called the new phenomenon global brightening.

There is a cruel asymmetry hidden within this story. Burning coal releases carbon dioxide, which warms the planet and can influence the climate for centuries. The sulphur pollution produced alongside it creates aerosols that cool the planet but remain in the atmosphere for a much shorter period. Reduce sulphur emissions and much of the cooling influence disappears relatively quickly. Reduce carbon dioxide emissions and the carbon dioxide already accumulated in the atmosphere does not simply disappear.

For decades, therefore, fossil fuel combustion gave us a long lived warming influence alongside a short lived cooling influence. When we cleaned up the pollution, we began removing the brake while much of the pressure on the accelerator remained.

This does not mean that clean air policies caused global warming. They did not. It means that pollution had been concealing part of the warming created by greenhouse gases. Cleaning the atmosphere revealed some of the warming that was already there.

The scale of that masking becomes clearer when expressed in terms of the Earth’s energy balance. The estimated present cooling influence from anthropogenic aerosols is about minus 1.1 watts per square metre, while the radiative forcing from carbon dioxide alone is roughly plus 2 watts per square metre compared with 1750. Other well mixed greenhouse gases add further positive forcing. Aerosols have therefore been cancelling a substantial fraction of the warming influence from greenhouse gases rather than making some insignificant adjustment at the margins.

The effect has never been distributed evenly. Pollution is concentrated around industrial regions and carried downwind, which means its regional climatic influence can be considerably stronger than the global average suggests. One striking example is the famous warming hole over the eastern United States, where temperatures behaved very differently from the broader global trend during part of the twentieth century. High concentrations of sulphate pollution were among the factors contributing to that unusual regional pattern. A global average of one watt per square metre can conceal much larger disturbances in particular places.

More recently, humanity has conducted another version of this accidental experiment, this time over the oceans. For decades, ships burned extremely sulphur rich fuels, producing trails of aerosol pollution across some of the world’s busiest shipping routes. These particles could alter marine clouds sufficiently for satellites sometimes to see brighter streaks following the paths of ships.

In 2020, international regulations dramatically reduced the permitted sulphur content of marine fuels. The change was introduced for very good reasons, but it also substantially reduced sulphate aerosol production over the oceans. Research suggests that this has reduced cloud brightness in some regions and allowed more solar energy to be absorbed. How large the global effect has been, and how much it contributed to the exceptional warmth seen since 2023, remains the subject of active scientific debate. It should not be presented as a settled explanation for recent temperature records.

What is settled is the much more important underlying lesson. Change the composition of the atmosphere and you change the flow of energy through the climate system. Change aerosols and you can change clouds. Change clouds and you change the amount of sunlight reflected towards space. Changes that sound tiny when expressed as fractions of a watt per square metre become enormous when spread across a planet.

This is why the language surrounding geoengineering can sometimes obscure more than it explains. We speak about deliberately changing the Earth’s radiative balance as though it would mark the beginning of human interference with the climate. In reality, we have changed atmospheric carbon dioxide, methane, aerosols and cloud properties, while simultaneously transforming forests, farmland and cities across much of the land surface. Human civilisation has already become a planetary physical force.

That does not mean we should simply replace accidental atmospheric intervention with deliberate atmospheric intervention. Nor does the history of sulphate pollution amount to an argument for stratospheric aerosol injection. There are profound scientific, environmental and political questions surrounding any attempt to manipulate the atmosphere deliberately. Research into ways of cooling a dangerously warming planet should continue, but understanding an intervention is not the same as advocating its deployment.

The more profound lesson from the accidental sunshade is simpler. The Earth’s temperature is extraordinarily sensitive to relatively small disturbances in the flow of energy entering and leaving the planet, and humanity has already demonstrated that it is capable of producing those disturbances on a global scale.

There is an uncomfortable implication to all of this that reaches far beyond the history of twentieth-century pollution. The accidental sunshade is now being dismantled. Sulphur emissions are falling, ships are burning cleaner fuels, power stations are closing or installing pollution controls, and air quality legislation is removing aerosols from the atmosphere. All of this is necessary. Air pollution kills millions of people and damages ecosystems across the world. Nobody should seriously propose preserving dirty air as a climate policy.

But removing the pollution does not remove the carbon dioxide that was emitted alongside it. The atmospheric mask can diminish relatively quickly while much of the greenhouse forcing remains. We are therefore entering a period in which two things are happening at once. Greenhouse gas concentrations remain extraordinarily high, while some of the pollution that has historically offset part of their warming effect is disappearing.

This matters because we are not starting from a safe climate. The world is already experiencing temperatures around the 1.5°C level during recent years, and the consequences are increasingly visible. Extreme heat is placing greater stress on people and infrastructure. Drought and changing rainfall are affecting agriculture and water supplies. Forests and ecosystems are being pushed into climatic conditions outside those in which they developed. Ice is disappearing, oceans are accumulating enormous quantities of heat and communities are being forced to adapt to extremes that were once considered exceptional.

At 1.5°C, these are no longer theoretical warnings about some distant climate. They are observations of the world around us. Two degrees is not simply another half a degree on a thermometer. Every additional increment of warming increases the probability of more severe extremes, greater agricultural disruption, ecosystem loss and changes that become progressively more difficult to reverse.

On present trajectories, 2°C is no longer a remote possibility belonging to the end of the century. It could become a reality within the next couple of decades. The precise year is uncertain, as it must be in a complex climate system, but that uncertainty should provide little comfort. Whether the threshold is crossed in twelve years, fifteen years or somewhat later is less important than the direction and speed of travel.

This is why the disappearance of aerosol masking deserves far more attention. We have spent decades discussing climate change principally as a problem of greenhouse gas emissions, yet the temperature we have actually experienced has been moderated by a second human influence working in the opposite direction. As that influence weakens, we should expect more of the underlying greenhouse warming to become visible.

Reducing emissions remains essential, but emissions reductions alone do not immediately cool the planet. Nor can we solve the problem simply by building ever larger quantities of energy infrastructure while continuing to waste enormous amounts of energy elsewhere. A serious climate response must include conservation and a deliberate reduction in unnecessary energy and material consumption, particularly in wealthy economies where so much of it contributes remarkably little to human wellbeing.

We also need to confront the other side of the planetary energy equation. If the Earth is absorbing too much energy, and if one of the accidental mechanisms that has been reflecting solar energy is disappearing, then increasing the reflectivity of the surface deserves much greater attention.

This does not mean recreating the dirty atmosphere of the twentieth century. Quite the opposite. We should want clean air and a more reflective planet. Instead of relying on sulphur pollution suspended above us, we can investigate how roofs, buildings, infrastructure, agricultural systems and other appropriate surfaces can reflect a greater proportion of incoming sunlight before it is converted into heat.

The attraction of increasing surface reflectivity is that it can be approached incrementally. Surfaces can be changed locally, their effects measured and the interventions altered or removed. A reflective roof can simultaneously reduce the amount of solar energy absorbed by the Earth system and make the building beneath it cooler. At larger scales, surface radiative management offers the possibility of restoring some reflectivity without deliberately polluting the atmosphere to achieve it.

We should be careful not to pretend that this is a substitute for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is not. The atmosphere still has to be stabilised, unnecessary energy consumption has to fall and carbon dioxide emissions have to approach zero. But the accelerating climate problem increasingly demands that we think about both sides of the energy balance. We need to stop trapping additional heat while also asking how we can safely reduce the amount of solar energy being absorbed.

For more than a century, industrial civilisation warmed the Earth while accidentally shading it from part of that warming. One effect accumulated for generations while the other partially concealed the consequences. Now we are cleaning the atmosphere, and the shade is lifting at precisely the moment when the underlying warming has become dangerous.

The great challenge of the coming decades may therefore be more complicated than simply ending the accidental geoengineering of the past. We have to remove the pollution without allowing the planet to absorb ever greater quantities of energy in its place.

We built the first planetary sunshade by accident. The task now is not to preserve it, but to understand what it was doing and find cleaner, safer and more controllable ways of restoring some of the reflectivity we have lost.

Because if the accidental sunshade continues to disappear while greenhouse warming continues to strengthen, the road from 1.5°C towards 2°C could be frighteningly short.

These innovations are interesting, and many will undoubtedly play an important role in the decades ahead. Yet there is a remarkably simple question that is rarely asked.

How much energy will it take to make a meaningful difference?

Climate change is often discussed as though it were simply a question of reducing emissions. Of course emissions matter enormously, but beneath every proposed solution lies another reality. Every factory has to be built. Every material has to be mined. Every tonne of steel has to be produced. Every component has to be manufactured, transported, installed and eventually replaced. None of these things happens without energy.

That matters because the world is already operating close to its limits. More than eight billion people depend upon an energy system that powers our homes, grows our food, moves goods around the globe, runs hospitals, heats buildings, manufactures medicines and keeps modern civilisation functioning. Demand continues to rise as populations grow and developing economies quite rightly seek higher living standards.

Although renewable energy is expanding rapidly, much of the world’s energy still comes from coal, oil and natural gas. Even the technologies that will help us move away from fossil fuels require enormous amounts of energy to manufacture. Wind turbines, solar farms, batteries, transmission networks and electric vehicles all begin life in factories that consume energy and materials. The transition is essential, but transitions do not happen overnight.

This creates a challenge that is rarely discussed. If solving climate change requires us to consume vast additional quantities of energy before we begin to see meaningful benefits, then we have to ask where that energy will come from. If it comes largely from fossil fuels in the short term, then the transition itself carries an environmental cost that cannot simply be ignored.

Perhaps the first principle of any climate strategy should therefore be remarkably simple. Before asking how much new energy we can generate, we should ask how much existing energy we can avoid wasting.

For more than a century we have built systems that assume energy is abundant and inexpensive. We lose heat from buildings that could have been retained. We allow dark surfaces to absorb vast quantities of solar energy only to expend more electricity trying to cool them again. We design infrastructure that often treats energy efficiency as an afterthought rather than a starting point.

Reducing this waste may not attract the same headlines as the latest technological breakthrough, but it has one enormous advantage. The cleanest unit of energy is often the one that never needed to be generated in the first place.

This way of thinking also changes how we evaluate climate solutions. It is not enough to know that a technology works. We should also ask how much energy it requires to manufacture, deploy and maintain throughout its lifetime. Does it create additional demand for an already stretched global energy system, or does it help reduce that demand? Does it simplify the challenge, or does it add another layer of complexity?

The same questions apply to materials. A solution that depends upon scarce minerals, highly specialised manufacturing or decades of industrial expansion may still have value, but those realities should form part of the conversation. Climate change is not being solved in a laboratory. It is being solved in mines, factories, ports, power stations and construction sites across the world.

There is another question that deserves far more attention. How quickly can humanity actually build what is being proposed? It is surprisingly easy to demonstrate that a technology works. It is much harder to show that it can be manufactured in the quantities required, using the resources available, within the timescales that the climate crisis demands.

These are not arguments against innovation. On the contrary, they are arguments for thinking more carefully about what success really looks like. The climate challenge is not simply to invent clever technologies. It is to develop solutions that deliver the greatest benefit while demanding the least additional energy, the fewest resources and the smallest burden on an energy system that is already under immense pressure.

Perhaps that is the climate mathematics we should be talking about. Not just whether an idea works, but whether the world can realistically build it, power it and deploy it fast enough to matter. Because in the end, the most elegant solution is not necessarily the one with the most impressive headline. It may be the one that quietly achieves the greatest impact while asking the least of an already overburdened planet.

For much of the past three decades, the climate debate has revolved around a single overriding objective: reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It has been an essential focus and one that must remain central to any credible climate strategy. Every tonne of carbon dioxide we avoid emitting today is a tonne that will not continue trapping heat for generations to come. Alongside decarbonisation, there is now growing recognition that we will also need to remove vast quantities of carbon dioxide already accumulated in the atmosphere through natural restoration, direct air capture and other carbon removal technologies.

Yet despite these two increasingly accepted pillars of climate policy, there remains a significant gap in the conversation. Climate change is often described as a carbon problem, but carbon dioxide is not the problem in itself. Carbon dioxide matters because it changes the Earth’s energy balance. Ultimately, climate change is a heat problem.

The Earth is currently accumulating more energy than it is losing back into space. This imbalance is measured as Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI), and it is arguably one of the most important indicators of our changing climate. Nearly 90 per cent of this excess energy is absorbed by the oceans, with the remainder warming the land and atmosphere, melting glaciers and ice sheets, and driving the increasingly extreme weather patterns that are becoming familiar around the world. Even if humanity succeeded in reducing emissions dramatically over the coming decades, the climate system would continue responding to the heat that has already accumulated. Oceans release stored energy only slowly, and the warming already in the system will continue influencing our climate for many years to come.

This creates what might be described as the climate gap. We are investing heavily in reducing future warming through emissions cuts and carbon removal, but we have comparatively little discussion about how we manage the heat that is already with us. Communities are not experiencing climate change thirty years from now—they are experiencing it today through dangerous heatwaves, failing crops, evaporating reservoirs and increasingly hostile urban environments.

This does not diminish the importance of decarbonisation. Quite the opposite. We need to reduce energy consumption wherever possible, improve efficiency and rapidly replace poor-quality, high-carbon energy sources with cleaner alternatives. The less energy we consume unnecessarily, and the cleaner the energy we do use, the better our long-term prospects become. But we also need to recognise that emissions reductions alone cannot immediately cool a planet that has already accumulated decades of excess heat.

An interesting perspective on this comes from the work of atmospheric physicist Professor Tim Garrett at the University of Utah. Garrett has proposed viewing human civilisation as a thermodynamic heat engine. His work suggests that civilisation consumes concentrated sources of energy to sustain itself, maintain the infrastructure built by previous generations and support continued economic growth. Under this framework, energy consumption and accumulated economic wealth remain closely linked because civilisation requires a continual flow of energy simply to maintain its existing complexity. Whatever the merits or limitations of this model, it provides an important reminder that energy use is governed not only by economics or politics but also by the fundamental laws of physics. Every joule of energy eventually becomes waste heat before ultimately radiating back into space.

I have considerable respect for Garrett’s work because it encourages us to think about civilisation in physical rather than purely economic terms. Whether one agrees with every aspect of his conclusions or not, it highlights an uncomfortable reality: if we continue expanding civilisation’s energy demands indefinitely, we should not be surprised when the consequences extend beyond carbon emissions alone. We therefore need to reduce unnecessary energy demand, improve efficiency and decarbonise our energy systems as rapidly as possible. Those remain essential priorities.

But there is another side to the equation that deserves equal attention. If climate change is fundamentally about the accumulation of heat, then we should also be asking how we reduce the amount of heat entering and remaining within the Earth system. This is where the science of surface radiative thermal management becomes increasingly important.

Rather than focusing exclusively on the atmosphere, surface radiative thermal management seeks to change how the Earth’s surface interacts with incoming solar radiation and outgoing thermal energy. Highly reflective surfaces reduce the amount of sunlight absorbed by roofs, roads, buildings and other infrastructure, while advanced passive daytime radiative cooling materials can also emit thermal energy efficiently through the atmospheric infrared window. The result is cooler buildings, cooler cities, lower energy demand, reduced heat stress and, if deployed at sufficient scale, a reduction in the amount of solar energy retained across the landscape.

This approach is particularly attractive because it offers immediate local benefits while also contributing to a broader climate objective. A reflective roof does not simply help the homeowner beneath it. It reduces heat absorbed into the urban environment, lowers cooling demand, protects vulnerable populations during heatwaves and contributes, however modestly, to reducing the Earth’s surface energy absorption. Unlike many proposed climate interventions, these benefits are tangible, measurable and available from the moment the technology is deployed.

The climate conversation has understandably concentrated on carbon because carbon is the driver. But the symptom we ultimately experience is heat. If we continue framing climate policy solely around emissions and carbon removal, we risk overlooking the challenge facing billions of people over the coming decades: living on a planet that is already significantly hotter than the one our cities, agriculture and water systems were designed for.

Perhaps the time has come to recognise a third pillar of climate action. Alongside reducing emissions and removing carbon dioxide, we should also be investing in practical, democratic ways of managing heat itself. Surface radiative thermal management will not replace decarbonisation, nor will it eliminate the need for carbon removal. But it may help bridge the climate gap by protecting people, reducing energy demand, improving resilience and buying valuable time while the slower processes of emissions reduction and atmospheric recovery begin to take effect.

That equation is now beginning to change.

As Europe experiences another summer of record-breaking heat, devastating wildfires and growing pressure on water resources, scientists are warning that the continent is entering a new era in which drought is no longer driven solely by a lack of precipitation. Increasingly, it is being driven by heat itself.

More than a quarter of a million people have already been evacuated as wildfires rage from the forests of Norway to the mountains of France and across large parts of Spain and Italy. Images of burning landscapes dominate television screens, yet another crisis is unfolding more quietly beneath the surface. Europe’s rivers are falling, reservoirs are coming under increasing strain and industries that depend upon reliable water supplies are beginning to feel the consequences.

The Rhine, Europe’s busiest inland commercial waterway, has once again fallen to unusually low levels. Shipping companies have been forced to reduce cargo loads because vessels can no longer navigate safely at their normal draft. Every reduction in river depth translates into fewer goods being carried, higher transport costs and increasing disruption to supply chains across some of Europe’s largest economies. Similar problems are now emerging along sections of the Danube, where exceptionally low water levels are affecting navigation, agriculture and water management.

The instinctive assumption is that Europe is simply receiving less rain. While below-average rainfall has undoubtedly contributed in some regions, the latest scientific evidence suggests that this explanation is no longer sufficient.

A recent study by World Weather Attribution concludes that the exceptional heat experienced across Europe has become one of the dominant drivers of drought conditions. The atmosphere is becoming increasingly effective at extracting moisture from the landscape. Scientists refer to this as increased atmospheric evaporative demand, but the principle is relatively straightforward. Warmer air can hold considerably more water vapour than cooler air. As temperatures rise, the atmosphere effectively becomes thirstier, drawing increasing quantities of moisture from soils, forests, crops, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.

This distinction is critically important because it fundamentally alters how drought should be understood. Even where rainfall remains close to historical averages, much of that water may no longer remain within the landscape for as long as it once did. Instead, higher temperatures accelerate evaporation so rapidly that water resources decline despite precipitation that might previously have been considered adequate.

Climate change is therefore altering not only temperatures but also the entire water balance.

The consequences extend well beyond agriculture. Reservoirs that once comfortably supplied towns and cities through the summer months may lose water more rapidly than infrastructure planners anticipated. Rivers that have served as Europe’s commercial arteries for centuries are becoming increasingly unreliable during prolonged heatwaves. Hydroelectric generation becomes less predictable, industrial cooling water becomes scarcer, and ecosystems experience increasing stress as water levels continue to fall.

This is likely to become one of the defining challenges of climate adaptation during the coming decades.

For many years, investment in water security has focused primarily on increasing supply by constructing reservoirs, transferring water between catchments and improving storage infrastructure. These remain essential measures, but they address only one side of an increasingly complex equation. If climate change is causing substantially greater losses through evaporation, then preserving the water that has already been stored must become an equally important priority.

This demands a new generation of adaptation strategies aimed not simply at collecting water but at preventing unnecessary water loss. As part of our own research, we are exploring a range of innovative concepts that could help reduce evaporation from reservoirs and other exposed water bodies by limiting the amount of solar energy they absorb. While this remains a relatively underexplored field of research, the need to conserve freshwater rather than simply increase supply is likely to become increasingly important as the climate continues to warm. If evaporation rates continue to rise in line with increasing global temperatures, developing practical methods of protecting stored water could become just as important as expanding water storage itself.

However, adaptation should never be viewed as an alternative to mitigation. Even the most innovative methods of conserving water cannot compensate indefinitely for a climate that continues to warm. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains the single most important means of limiting future temperature increases. At the same time, there is growing recognition that increasing the Earth’s surface reflectivity through carefully designed land-based interventions may also have an important role to play in reducing heat accumulation and moderating local and regional temperatures.

The reality is that the climate challenge no longer permits simple solutions. Societies must reduce emissions far more rapidly than they are doing today while simultaneously adapting infrastructure, agriculture and water management systems to conditions that are already changing around them.

Europe’s rivers are providing an unmistakable warning. The continent is not merely experiencing another dry summer. It is beginning to experience a new hydrological reality in which rising temperatures are transforming the way water moves through the environment. Unless governments begin planning not only for rainfall but also for rapidly increasing evaporation, the pressures on water resources will intensify year after year.

The fires currently sweeping across Europe may eventually be extinguished. The deeper challenge, however, will remain. In a warming climate, the atmosphere itself is becoming increasingly efficient at taking water away from the landscape. Unless both mitigation and adaptation accelerate significantly, Europe’s water security will face growing pressure throughout the years ahead.

These are not isolated technical faults or routine interruptions to electricity supplies. They are a reminder that climate change is becoming as much an infrastructure challenge as it is an environmental one. When temperatures reach such extremes, it is not simply people who begin to struggle. The systems upon which modern society depends also begin to operate closer and closer to their limits.

Across these three countries alone, around 67 million people live with the possibility that the electricity they rely upon may not always be available during periods of extreme heat. That figure is roughly equivalent to the population of the United Kingdom. It is an astonishing number of people to be exposed simultaneously to the combined risks of oppressive temperatures and an increasingly strained power network.

Perhaps the most important point, however, is that this represents only one region of the world at one moment in time. Similar conditions are becoming increasingly common across southern Europe, the Middle East, South Asia and parts of North America. As global temperatures continue to rise, the number of people living under these conditions will increase year after year. What is happening in North Africa today is unlikely to remain confined to North Africa.

There is a simple reason why electricity systems become so vulnerable during prolonged heatwaves. As temperatures rise, millions of people understandably turn to air conditioning, refrigeration and electric cooling systems in an effort to make homes, workplaces and hospitals habitable. Electricity demand therefore climbs sharply at precisely the same time that the infrastructure supplying that electricity becomes less efficient.

Transmission lines lose carrying capacity as they heat up. Transformers operate under greater thermal stress. Conventional power stations become more difficult to cool because both the surrounding air and the cooling water they depend upon are warmer than normal. Every component of the electricity network is asked to work harder while simultaneously becoming less capable of doing so.

Even renewable energy is affected. Solar photovoltaic panels are essential to the transition away from fossil fuels, yet they too become less efficient as temperatures increase. Modern silicon panels typically lose between 0.3 and 0.5 per cent of their electrical output for every degree Celsius above their rated operating temperature. During exceptionally hot weather, when electricity demand is often at its highest, solar panels can therefore produce noticeably less power than they would under cooler conditions.

The consequences of a power failure during extreme heat extend far beyond inconvenience. Air conditioning systems stop working, buildings rapidly become hotter, refrigeration fails, medicines may be compromised, water pumping systems can be disrupted and hospitals are forced to rely on emergency generators. For elderly people, young children and those with existing medical conditions, prolonged exposure to extreme indoor temperatures can become a serious health risk.

It is tempting to conclude that the solution is simply to generate more electricity, build larger power stations and strengthen electricity networks. Those investments will undoubtedly be necessary, but they are only part of the answer. If our response to rising temperatures is simply to install more mechanical cooling, electricity demand will continue to rise as the climate continues to warm. We risk entering a cycle in which every hotter summer requires ever greater amounts of energy simply to maintain the conditions we once took for granted.

A more fundamental question deserves far greater attention. Instead of asking only how we can generate enough electricity to remove unwanted heat, we should also be asking how we can prevent that heat from building up in the first place.

This is where passive cooling technologies become so important. Highly reflective materials reduce the amount of solar energy absorbed by roofs, roads and buildings. Passive daytime radiative cooling materials go even further by not only reflecting incoming sunlight but also emitting thermal energy through the atmospheric window into the cold of space. Rather than relying on electricity to remove heat after it has entered a building, these technologies work continuously to reduce the amount of heat entering the structure in the first place.

Their greatest advantage is that they continue working regardless of whether the electricity grid is operating. A reflective roof does not stop reflecting sunlight because of a power cut. A radiative cooling surface does not require electricity to emit heat into space. Every degree of passive cooling reduces the demand placed upon electricity networks while simultaneously making homes, schools, hospitals and workplaces more resilient during periods of extreme heat.

As climate change accelerates, this resilience will become increasingly valuable. The world will need stronger electricity grids, more renewable energy and better storage technologies, but it will also need buildings and cities that naturally remain cooler. Reducing heat before it enters our homes is often far more efficient than trying to remove it afterwards using electricity.

The blackouts currently affecting parts of North Africa are therefore about much more than a regional power crisis. They offer a glimpse of the pressures that many parts of the world are likely to experience over the coming decades. As temperatures continue to climb, the challenge will not simply be producing enough electricity. It will be redesigning our buildings, our cities and our infrastructure so that they require less energy to remain safe and habitable.

That is why passive cooling should no longer be viewed as a specialist technology for the future. In many of the hottest regions of the world, it is rapidly becoming an essential part of climate resilience and one of the most practical ways of helping societies adapt to a world that continues to grow warmer.

Today, humanity operates a civilisation with a continuous power demand of around 20 terawatts. Every second of every day, we consume around 20 trillion joules of energy. This vast flow of energy keeps hospitals functioning, grows food, powers industry, transports billions of people and connects almost every corner of the world. These are remarkable achievements, and they are worth preserving. Modern civilisation has delivered extraordinary improvements in health, education and quality of life. The challenge is not civilisation itself, but our inability to distinguish between what is essential and what has become little more than industrial excess.

Some campaigners speak as though we can simply switch off oil and gas tomorrow. We cannot. However uncomfortable that reality may be, our food systems, transport networks, manufacturing and healthcare remain deeply dependent upon fossil fuels. An abrupt end would not simply inconvenience wealthy nations. It would leave supply chains fractured, agriculture disrupted and millions of the world’s poorest people facing hunger. The transition away from fossil fuels must happen as rapidly as possible, but it must also be a just transition. It has to protect livelihoods while replacing the systems that currently underpin modern society. That is an engineering challenge as much as it is a political one.

None of this, however, excuses the extraordinary waste that has become embedded within affluent societies. The Global North consumes a vastly disproportionate share of the world’s energy, and a significant fraction of that consumption contributes very little to human wellbeing. We have become accustomed to treating energy as though it were effectively limitless, provided we can find another way to generate it. Increasingly, the conversation is framed around replacing fossil fuels with renewable electricity while leaving our patterns of consumption almost entirely unchanged. It is a comforting narrative because it asks very little of us.

Yet energy is not free, even when it is renewable. Wind turbines require steel, concrete and rare materials. Solar panels require mining, manufacturing and transport. Batteries require lithium, nickel, copper and graphite. Every unit of energy carries environmental costs somewhere in the system. Decarbonising our energy supply is absolutely essential, but so too is asking whether every demand we place upon that supply is justified.

Too often, the answer is plainly no. We have built economies that generate demand simply because demand itself has become profitable. Enormous illuminated advertising displays compete for attention throughout the night. Disposable products are manufactured in astonishing quantities, shipped across oceans and discarded within months. Vast amounts of energy are spent persuading people to buy things they neither need nor particularly want. Entire industries exist not because they solve meaningful problems but because they have become adept at monetising attention and consumption.

One small example arrives through my own letterbox. Like many people, I have placed a clear notice asking for no unsolicited advertising material. I do not want marketing leaflets. I have no interest in receiving them, and I certainly do not wish to encourage the energy, paper, ink, transport and labour required to produce and deliver them. Yet they continue to arrive. The reason is simple. Postal operators have commercial contracts to distribute them, and someone has paid for them to be delivered. My preference to avoid that waste is overridden because there is profit to be made somewhere along the chain.

It is, in the grand scheme of things, a small irritation. Yet it illustrates a much larger failure. We often imagine waste as the result of individual choices, but much of it is built directly into the economic system itself. Even when citizens actively try to reduce unnecessary consumption, they find themselves participating in processes designed to maximise it. Opting out becomes surprisingly difficult because waste is frequently more profitable than restraint.

This raises an uncomfortable question. Are we genuinely pursuing a green transition, or are we simply trying to preserve every aspect of an energy-intensive civilisation by changing the source of the electricity? If our objective is merely to replace fossil fuels while continuing to consume ever greater quantities of energy for increasingly trivial purposes, we risk solving only part of the problem.

The transition we need is not simply from dirty energy to clean energy. It is from thoughtless consumption to intelligent consumption. Countless forms of energy use improve lives beyond measure and deserve every investment we can make. Hospitals, clean water, scientific research, public transport, resilient food systems and affordable housing all fall into that category. There are equally countless activities whose disappearance would scarcely diminish human wellbeing at all. Identifying those opportunities should not be seen as a sacrifice. It should be regarded as good stewardship.

Technology will remain central to this effort. Renewable energy must expand dramatically. Fossil fuel emissions must fall rapidly. Passive cooling technologies, such as those we are developing at MEER, can help reduce the energy required to keep buildings and cities habitable by reflecting sunlight before it becomes heat. Greater efficiency across transport, buildings and industry will also be indispensable. But efficiency alone will never be enough if every saving simply creates an excuse to consume more elsewhere.

Perhaps the defining question of this century is not how much energy humanity can produce, but how wisely it chooses to use it. Future generations will inherit the consequences of every unnecessary tonne of carbon we emit, every ecosystem we degrade and every resource we squander. They will also inherit the infrastructure, technologies and institutions we choose to build today.

A mature civilisation should be capable of recognising the difference between necessity and indulgence. It should be understood that genuine prosperity is measured not by how much energy we can afford to consume, but by how little we need to consume to live healthy, secure, and fulfilling lives. Until that distinction becomes central to the climate conversation, we risk mistaking an energy transition for a civilisation transition. The former is essential. The latter is overdue.

No responsible scientist would claim that a single indicator proves the climate system is accelerating. Science rarely deals in absolute certainty, particularly when examining a system as vast and complex as the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. Yet science is equally clear that no single indicator is ever interpreted in isolation. The sea surface temperature record sits alongside a growing catalogue of observations that have become increasingly difficult to dismiss. Global average temperatures continue to challenge previous records. Marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent and more intense. Sea ice has repeatedly reached historically low levels. Heat extremes are occurring with increasing regularity across continents that were once thought comparatively resilient. Each individual observation may invite debate. Taken together, however, they begin to resemble something rather more significant. They resemble warning lights.

Every pilot is taught that a single warning light may indicate a faulty sensor. Two warning lights may still prove manageable. When warning lights begin appearing across the entire instrument panel, however, continuing the flight as though nothing has changed is no longer a demonstration of calm judgement. It is a dangerous misunderstanding of risk. The purpose of warning systems is not to provide certainty that disaster is inevitable. Their purpose is to alert us that the probability of serious consequences is increasing and that prudent action should begin before certainty arrives.

This is precisely where the public discussion surrounding climate cooling has become increasingly detached from both the evidence and the principles of responsible risk management. The debate is too often presented as though cooling research somehow competes with emissions reduction, or worse, that investigating methods of reducing planetary temperatures amounts to an admission that efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have failed. It is a false choice that has become deeply embedded in public discourse, despite having little basis in scientific reasoning.

Continuing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions remains absolutely fundamental. Every credible pathway for limiting long-term warming requires rapid reductions in emissions, accompanied by the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems and the transition towards cleaner sources of energy. No serious scientist working on climate intervention argues otherwise. Cooling is not a substitute for mitigation, nor should it ever become an excuse to delay the decarbonisation of the global economy.

The real question is a different one altogether. It is whether mitigation alone will prove sufficient if the climate system is changing more rapidly than anticipated or if the impacts of warming begin to outpace our ability to adapt. That question becomes increasingly difficult to ignore as more indicators move beyond the boundaries that defined the climate of the late twentieth century. Record-breaking sea surface temperatures, unprecedented marine heatwaves, declining sea ice, persistent heat extremes and other emerging signals do not, by themselves, prove that we have entered a fundamentally new climatic state. They do, however, raise the possibility that we may be approaching one. When confronted with that possibility, refusing even to investigate additional methods of reducing risk becomes an increasingly difficult position to defend.

Imagine driving along an unfamiliar coastal road in dense fog. Everyone in the vehicle agrees that somewhere ahead lies a cliff edge. Nobody disputes that the cliff exists. The disagreement concerns only one thing: how close it actually is. Some passengers remain convinced that there are still many miles of road ahead and that there is ample time before any difficult decisions need to be made. Others, studying the map, the warning signs, the changing landscape and the vehicle’s instruments, become increasingly convinced that the edge is approaching much more quickly than anyone expected.

A sensible driver does not resolve that disagreement by choosing whichever opinion happens to be the most reassuring. Nor do they continue accelerating simply because certainty remains elusive. They ease off the accelerator. They become more attentive to their surroundings. They prepare for the possibility that the more cautious interpretation may be correct. They do not assume disaster is inevitable, but neither do they behave as though it is impossible. They recognise that uncertainty does not justify complacency. If anything, uncertainty demands greater caution when the potential consequences are severe.

This is how every mature discipline manages risk. Engineers build bridges with safety margins because they understand that uncertainty is unavoidable. Aviation investigates near misses as rigorously as accidents because it recognises that warning signs often appear long before catastrophe. Doctors confronted with a patient whose condition is deteriorating do not simply continue with the original treatment plan while refusing to investigate additional therapies. They continue treating the underlying illness while simultaneously exploring every scientifically credible intervention that might improve the patient’s chances of survival. None of these professions mistakes preparedness for panic. They understand that good risk management is built on anticipating problems before they become irreversible.

Climate policy should be guided by precisely the same principle. We should continue doing everything possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously investigating every scientifically credible means of reducing heat should emissions reductions alone prove insufficient to protect societies and ecosystems from the level of warming they may experience over the coming decades. Refusing even to explore cooling technologies under such circumstances is rather like insisting that a fire brigade should decline to test new firefighting equipment because it hopes that stricter building regulations will eventually reduce the number of fires. One strategy addresses the underlying cause of the problem. The other seeks to reduce the damage while the longer-term solution takes effect. Mature societies have always understood that these are complementary approaches rather than competing ones.

Ultimately, this is not an argument for abandoning mitigation, nor is it an argument for deploying any particular cooling technology tomorrow. It is an argument for intellectual honesty in the face of mounting evidence. When multiple independent indicators suggest that the climate system may be entering conditions beyond those for which our existing assumptions were developed, the responsible response is not to narrow the range of scientific inquiry. It is to expand it. History rarely judges societies harshly for investigating too many potential solutions to an emerging crisis. It is far less forgiving of those who ignored the warning signs because they were unwilling to question established thinking.

Those greenhouses were never intended to become a climate experiment. They were built to grow food. Yet, over several decades, they have unintentionally demonstrated something that climate science is only beginning to fully appreciate. By replacing darker ground surfaces with highly reflective roofs, they have increased the amount of sunlight reflected back into space, reduced the amount of solar energy absorbed by the landscape and produced measurable cooling effects. Satellite observations have shown that the region’s albedo has increased significantly, generating negative radiative forcing and reducing the amount of heat entering the climate system.

That should change the way we think about climate action.

For decades, the global conversation has focused overwhelmingly on carbon dioxide. Carbon matters enormously, but it is only one part of the Earth’s climate system. The planet ultimately responds to energy. Every second, the Sun delivers vast quantities of energy to the Earth’s surface. The more of that energy we absorb, the warmer the planet becomes. The more we reflect back into space, the less energy is available to drive warming.

This is why surface reflectivity, or albedo, deserves far greater attention than it has received.

The lesson from Almería is not that we should cover the world with plastic greenhouses. That would simply exchange one environmental problem for another. The lesson is that the underlying physics works. Increasing the reflectivity of the Earth’s surface changes the Earth’s energy balance. The challenge is not whether we should increase albedo, but how we can do so in ways that restore nature rather than degrade it.

That opportunity is far greater than many people realise.

Around the world, agricultural land is under increasing pressure. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, declining groundwater, soil degradation and desertification are reducing the productivity of once fertile landscapes. Rivers that have sustained farming for centuries are shrinking. Reservoirs are reaching historic lows. Entire regions are becoming progressively hotter and drier as more of the Sun’s energy is absorbed by exposed soils and degraded land.

At the same time, satellite observations suggest that the Earth itself has been reflecting less sunlight back into space than it did only a few decades ago. Over roughly the past thirty years, the planet has experienced a decline in Earthshine, meaning that more solar energy is now being retained within the climate system. This growing planetary energy imbalance lies at the heart of global warming.

If we want to reverse that trend, we need to begin thinking differently about our landscapes.

Instead of seeing land restoration, food production, climate adaptation and climate mitigation as separate challenges, we should recognise that they can become part of the same solution. We have an opportunity to redesign landscapes so that they capture carbon, restore biodiversity, conserve water and reflect more of the Sun’s energy back into space at the same time.

One promising approach is the development of reflective canopy systems integrated within restored agricultural and natural landscapes. Rather than covering entire regions with artificial materials, these lightweight structures would be strategically deployed above crops, public spaces, livestock, vulnerable communities and degraded land. Their purpose would not simply be to provide shade, but to reduce the amount of solar energy reaching the surface while reflecting a significant proportion back into space before it is absorbed.

The immediate environmental benefits would be considerable. Cooler ground temperatures would reduce heat stress on crops, livestock and people. Lower surface temperatures would reduce evaporation, helping soils retain moisture for longer and reducing irrigation demands. Healthier soils would support greater biological activity, improve fertility and become more resilient during prolonged dry periods. Farmers would gain protection from increasingly intense heat while agricultural productivity could become more stable despite a changing climate.

Importantly, these canopy systems need not rely upon newly manufactured raw materials. In the near term, they could be produced using some of the world’s largest existing waste streams. Recycled polymers and recycled aluminium are already available in enormous quantities and can be repurposed into lightweight reflective structures with long operational lifetimes. Materials that would otherwise become pollution could instead become valuable climate infrastructure, extending their useful life while simultaneously helping to reduce the amount of heat entering the Earth system.

Looking further ahead, the materials themselves need not remain synthetic. Advances in materials science offer the prospect of increasingly replacing conventional plastics with renewable plant-based alternatives. Fast-growing fibres, bamboo composites, agricultural residues, palm leaves and other naturally abundant materials could provide structural components for future canopy systems. Combined with durable reflective surface treatments, these materials could deliver comparable cooling performance while reducing dependence on fossil-derived products. The long-term objective should be climate infrastructure that becomes progressively more regenerative with every generation of development.

These canopy systems should never be viewed in isolation. Their greatest value comes when they become part of wider landscape restoration programmes. Fast-growing species such as paulownia could provide timber, shade and carbon storage while supporting the canopy structures themselves. Native tree species could restore biodiversity and ecological resilience. Degraded soils could gradually recover as temperatures fall and moisture is retained for longer. Water resources would be used more efficiently, vegetation would become more resilient and entire landscapes could begin moving away from a cycle of degradation towards one of regeneration.

This is not simply an engineering solution. It is an ecological one.

The objective is to restore the natural functioning of landscapes while carefully introducing engineered systems that enhance rather than replace nature. Healthy soils, restored vegetation, reflective canopies and intelligent land management reinforce one another. Together they reduce heat stress, improve agricultural resilience, restore ecosystem function and increase the amount of solar energy reflected back into space.

The significance of Almería, therefore, extends far beyond southern Spain. It demonstrates that altering surface reflectivity is not merely a theoretical concept discussed in academic papers. It is already happening on a landscape scale, producing measurable effects on the Earth’s energy balance. The difference is that it occurred accidentally and without being designed for climate benefit. Our task now is to take that same physical principle and apply it deliberately, intelligently and sustainably.

Climate policy has understandably concentrated on reducing emissions and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Those efforts must continue. However, carbon is only one side of the Earth’s energy equation. We must also pay greater attention to how much solar energy the planet absorbs in the first place. By restoring brighter, healthier and more resilient landscapes, we have an opportunity not only to protect communities from extreme heat but also to begin addressing one of the underlying drivers of climate change itself.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from the white landscapes of Almería is that some of the world’s most important climate discoveries are made entirely by accident. The challenge before us is to transform that accidental discovery into a deliberate global strategy. Not by covering the Earth in plastic, but by building a new generation of reflective climate infrastructure that works alongside nature, restores degraded landscapes, strengthens food security and helps tip the Earth’s energy balance back in the right direction.

Yet one of the greatest climate emergencies taking place this summer is almost entirely invisible.

It is happening beneath the waves.

Sea surface temperatures across large parts of Europe are now exceptionally high. The Mediterranean, Adriatic, North Sea, Baltic, and parts of the Atlantic are all experiencing prolonged periods of unusually warm water. While holidaymakers may welcome warmer seas, the reality beneath the surface is far more alarming.

Marine life is exquisitely sensitive to changes in temperature. Unlike people, fish, shellfish, corals, seagrasses and countless other marine species cannot retreat indoors, switch on air conditioning or escape prolonged periods of extreme heat. Many have evolved over thousands of years to survive within remarkably narrow temperature ranges. When those limits are exceeded, the consequences can be devastating.

This is not a warning about some distant future. It is already happening.

During the exceptional Mediterranean marine heatwave of 2022, scientists recorded one of the most severe marine mass mortality events ever observed in European waters. Around France’s Calanques National Park near Marseille, large populations of precious red coral and red gorgonians died after prolonged exposure to unusually warm seas. These slow-growing species are far more than beautiful underwater organisms. They form complex three-dimensional habitats that shelter, feed and support hundreds of other marine species. When they disappear, entire ecosystems begin to unravel.

Nor was this an isolated event. A major international study examining marine heatwaves between 2015 and 2019 found widespread mass mortality across the Mediterranean, including the coasts of Spain, France and Italy. More than fifty marine species, including corals, sea fans, sponges, molluscs and other habitat-forming organisms, suffered extensive die-offs. The researchers concluded that marine heatwave-induced mass mortality is no longer exceptional. It is rapidly becoming the new normal.

Yet most people have never heard about these events.

That is because the greatest tragedy of marine heatwaves is their invisibility. We instinctively respond to disasters that we can see. We watch forests burn, glaciers collapse, and rivers burst their banks. We share dramatic photographs across social media, and governments respond to public pressure.

But beneath a seemingly calm, sparkling sea, entire underwater forests can die in silence. Coral communities can collapse. Seagrass meadows can disappear. Fish populations can shift or decline. None of it is visible from the shoreline.

Out of sight too often means out of mind.

The consequences, however, reach far beyond marine biology.

The oceans are not simply vast bodies of water separating continents. They are the planet’s life-support system. They absorb more than ninety per cent of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases, helping to moderate temperatures on land. They absorb enormous quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce around half of the oxygen we breathe through microscopic marine organisms.

The oceans also feed humanity.

Billions of people rely directly on seafood as an important source of protein, while hundreds of millions depend upon healthy marine ecosystems for their livelihoods through fishing, aquaculture, tourism and countless coastal industries. Entire economies, communities and cultures have developed around productive seas.

When marine ecosystems begin to fail, those impacts spread rapidly through society.

Marine heatwaves are already altering the distribution of commercially important fish species. Some are moving northwards in search of cooler waters. Others are declining as breeding grounds become unsuitable. Coral habitats that provide shelter for juvenile fish are disappearing. Seagrass meadows that act as nurseries for countless species are being lost. Oxygen concentrations decline as warmer water holds less dissolved oxygen, placing further stress on already vulnerable organisms, while harmful algal blooms and marine diseases become increasingly common.

These are not isolated ecological problems. They represent growing threats to food security, employment, biodiversity and the resilience of coastal communities.

The tragedy is that while we rightly focus on temperatures in our cities, we rarely consider the temperatures of the seas surrounding them. Yet what happens beneath the waves ultimately affects every one of us.

If marine ecosystems continue to deteriorate, we stand to lose far more than individual species. We risk undermining one of the Earth’s most important climate-regulating systems. We jeopardise food supplies, fisheries, biodiversity and the livelihoods of millions of people whose lives depend upon healthy oceans.

The oceans have protected humanity for decades by absorbing the overwhelming majority of the excess heat generated by climate change. That service has spared us from even more extreme temperatures on land, but it has come at an enormous cost to life beneath the surface.

The extraordinary sea temperatures now surrounding Europe should therefore be viewed as a warning. They remind us that the climate crisis is not confined to our cities, fields and forests. It extends across every part of the Earth system.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains absolutely essential. Without rapid and sustained reductions, marine heatwaves will become more frequent, more intense and longer-lasting throughout this century.

But emissions reductions alone are unlikely to be enough to protect ecosystems that are already experiencing dangerous levels of warming today.

Alongside mitigation, we must invest seriously in adaptation and in scientifically credible approaches that can reduce temperatures at local, regional and, ultimately, global scales. Whether through restoring coastal ecosystems, protecting vulnerable marine habitats, redesigning our cities to reduce heat, or developing innovative cooling technologies, every responsible solution deserves urgent consideration.

The oceans have spent decades shielding humanity from the full force of climate change.

Now they need protecting in return.

Because if we lose the health of our seas, we lose far more than marine life. We undermine one of the foundations upon which civilisation itself depends. The food on our tables, the stability of our climate, the livelihoods of millions of people and the extraordinary biodiversity of our blue planet all depend upon healthy oceans.

The next time you stand on a beach and look out across calm blue water, remember that appearances can be profoundly deceptive. Beneath that tranquil surface, one of the greatest climate emergencies on Earth may already be unfolding.

And unless we act with far greater urgency, its consequences will not remain beneath the waves for long.

As temperatures climbed above 40°C, countless homes directly beneath dark roofs became ovens. Throughout the day those rooftops absorbed enormous amounts of solar energy. By late afternoon they were radiating that stored heat into the rooms below, turning bedrooms into places where sleep became almost impossible. Even after sunset, the heat remained trapped inside the building as the roof slowly released the energy it had collected throughout the day.

That is albedo in its simplest form. A bright surface reflects much of the Sun’s energy away. A dark surface absorbs it, stores it and releases it as heat. Now imagine scaling that simple principle from a single rooftop to an entire city.

For decades, the climate debate has focused almost entirely on greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide, methane and other emissions have rightly dominated headlines because they trap heat in the atmosphere and are the principal driver of global warming. Yet there is another part of the Earth’s energy balance that receives remarkably little attention despite being just as fundamental to the climate system.

The Earth is losing its Earthshine.

Every day, around thirty per cent of the sunlight reaching our planet is reflected back into space. This reflected light, known as Earthshine, is a measure of the Earth’s albedo – the reflectivity of the planet. It is one of nature’s greatest cooling systems. The brighter the Earth, the more solar energy it reflects. The darker it becomes, the more energy it absorbs.

That balance is now changing.

Satellite observations from NASA’s CERES mission show a persistent decline in Earth’s planetary albedo over the past two decades. What began as relatively small fluctuations has become a clear downward trend, particularly since around 2015. The planet is reflecting less sunlight than it did only twenty years ago. It may appear to be a tiny percentage change, but when applied across the entire surface of the Earth it represents an extraordinary increase in the amount of solar energy being absorbed every second of every day.

This is not simply another climate statistic. It is a direct measure of the planet becoming darker.

The reasons are becoming increasingly obvious. Across the Arctic, bright sea ice that once reflected enormous quantities of sunlight back into space is disappearing. Snow-covered landscapes that remained white for much of the year are shrinking. Glaciers that have existed for thousands of years are retreating at unprecedented rates. As these highly reflective surfaces vanish, they expose darker oceans, rock, soil and vegetation beneath. Those darker surfaces absorb far more of the Sun’s energy, further warming the planet and accelerating the melting that caused the problem in the first place.

It is one of the most powerful positive feedback mechanisms in the climate system.

The consequences are no longer confined to satellite imagery or scientific journals. They are becoming visible in everyday life. Across mountain ranges in Europe, ski resorts increasingly find themselves operating on narrow strips of artificial snow surrounded by green grass. Chairlifts continue to run and visitors still arrive, but the landscape has changed beyond recognition. Entire mountainsides that would once have been blanketed in snow throughout winter now spend increasing periods of the season exposed and dark.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect is how quickly society adapts to these changes. A generation ago, such scenes would have been regarded as extraordinary. Today they are increasingly accepted as normal. An entire generation of children is growing up without experiencing the winters their parents and grandparents once took for granted. The disappearance of snow is no longer viewed as a warning sign but simply as the new reality.

Yet every hectare of snow that disappears has consequences that extend far beyond tourism or winter sports. Fresh snow reflects up to ninety per cent of incoming sunlight. Grass, soil and exposed rock reflect only a fraction of that amount. Every retreating snowline therefore changes the Earth’s energy balance, turning natural mirrors into heat absorbers.

This is why the loss of Earth’s reflectivity matters so much.

Climate change is driven not only by the atmosphere’s increasing ability to trap heat, but also by the Earth’s decreasing ability to reflect incoming solar radiation. Greenhouse gases affect the heat trying to escape into space. Albedo determines how much solar energy enters the system in the first place. Both are fundamental components of the planetary energy balance, yet public discussion remains overwhelmingly focused on only one of them.

The irony is that while the Earth is steadily losing some of its brightest natural surfaces, there are still lobbying organisations actively campaigning against measures that would increase reflectivity in our cities. Investigations have revealed efforts to weaken or repeal requirements for reflective roofing materials, despite decades of research demonstrating that cool roofs reduce building temperatures, lower energy demand and help combat dangerous urban heat. At a time when the planet itself is becoming less reflective, deliberately making our built environment darker is moving in precisely the wrong direction.

Fortunately, this story is not entirely one of decline.

Unlike melting glaciers or disappearing Arctic sea ice, many human-made surfaces can be changed. Highly reflective roofs, advanced passive daytime radiative cooling materials, reflective pavements and carefully designed agricultural surfaces all have the potential to increase the Earth’s reflectivity while making communities cooler and more resilient. Around the world, researchers are experimenting with new reflective materials to protect glaciers, reduce urban heat and improve the energy performance of buildings. In our own work, we continue to develop sustainable surface technologies capable of increasing reflectivity while delivering practical cooling benefits for communities facing increasingly dangerous temperatures.

These solutions are not alternatives to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They are complementary. We must continue reducing emissions with urgency because they remain the principal cause of climate change. But at the same time, we must recognise that restoring the Earth’s reflectivity is becoming an increasingly important part of restoring the planet’s energy balance.

Climate change is often described as an invisible process taking place high in the atmosphere. In reality, much of it is unfolding on the ground beneath our feet. It is happening on melting glaciers, shrinking snowfields, disappearing sea ice, expanding cities, dark rooftops, roads, agricultural land and forests. Every one of those surfaces influences how much of the Sun’s energy the Earth reflects back into space.

We are quite literally losing our Earthshine.

It is one of the most significant changes taking place on our planet, yet it remains almost entirely absent from public discussion and international climate policy. The world quite rightly talks about reducing emissions, but it must also begin talking about protecting and restoring the Earth’s natural reflectivity.

Our planet has spent millions of years evolving a delicate energy balance between incoming sunlight and outgoing heat. We are now disrupting both sides of that equation simultaneously.

The Earth is becoming darker. That should concern every one of us. Because if we can brighten the planet again through smarter materials, more reflective cities, protected snow and ice, and sustainable surface technologies, we will not simply be adapting to climate change. We will be helping to restore one of the Earth’s oldest and most powerful natural cooling systems.

Large areas of France were recording land surface temperatures above 55°C, values that are normally associated with parts of the Sahara Desert. It is an extraordinary image, and an even more extraordinary reality. One of these landscapes is an arid desert where such temperatures are expected. The other is one of Europe’s most productive agricultural regions, responsible for growing the cereals, fruit, vegetables and vineyards that help feed the continent.

Something is changing, and it is changing far more quickly than most people realise.

These are land surface temperatures measured by satellite rather than the air temperatures reported in weather forecasts, but that does not make them any less significant. Crops do not exist in isolation from the ground beneath them. Their roots depend on moisture in the soil and their leaves exchange heat with the surfaces around them. As exposed ground climbs beyond 55°C, soils lose moisture at an alarming rate, plants struggle to regulate themselves, and fruit can literally begin to cook on the branch. At these temperatures, the land itself becomes hostile to life.

The timing could hardly be worse. Late June is one of the most important periods in Europe’s growing season. Wheat, maize, vineyards and orchards are all reaching critical stages of development. Extreme heat during this narrow window can reduce yields, impair pollination, spoil fruit and dramatically increase irrigation demand. Farmers can spend an entire year nurturing a crop only to watch weeks of exceptional heat undo much of that work.

Nor is it only crops that are suffering. Livestock are increasingly caught in the same relentless heat. Poultry are especially vulnerable because they have only a limited ability to cool themselves, and reports from France indicate that hundreds of thousands of birds have already died during the current heatwave. Farmers are simultaneously trying to keep cattle alive, harvest cereals before tinder-dry fields ignite and protect what remains of crops that are rapidly drying under an unforgiving sun. This is no longer simply a difficult summer. It is a growing crisis for European agriculture.

Europe is already warming at around twice the global average, making it the fastest warming continent on Earth. There are several reasons for this, including the fact that land warms more rapidly than oceans, changes in atmospheric circulation and feedbacks associated with declining snow and ice cover. However, another factor receives remarkably little public attention despite being well understood within the scientific community.

Over the past four decades, Europe has made enormous progress in reducing air pollution. Sulphur dioxide emissions and other aerosol pollutants have fallen dramatically as a result of increasingly stringent environmental regulations. The benefits have been enormous. Air quality has improved, respiratory disease has declined, acid rain has largely disappeared, and hundreds of thousands of premature deaths have been prevented. Few would argue against these achievements.

However, atmospheric aerosols were also performing another function. They reflected a proportion of incoming sunlight back into space and helped to influence the formation and brightness of low-level clouds, both of which reduced the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. As Europe has successfully cleaned its atmosphere, part of this masking effect has inevitably been removed. More sunlight is now reaching the ground than it would have done under the more polluted conditions of previous decades.

This does not mean cleaning up the air was a mistake. It unquestionably saved lives and remains one of Europe’s greatest environmental successes. The question is whether policymakers fully appreciated the climatic consequences of removing that cooling influence while greenhouse gas concentrations continued to rise. Air quality policy and climate policy have largely evolved along separate tracks, yet the interaction between them has profound implications for how quickly Europe experiences warming.

Today, we are beginning to see the consequences. Cities are becoming dangerously hot. Roads soften. Railways buckle. Hospitals fill with patients suffering heat-related illnesses. Agricultural regions that have supported communities for generations are experiencing conditions more commonly associated with deserts. What once happened once in a generation is becoming increasingly frequent.

What concerns me most is that adaptation has never been treated with the urgency it deserves. For decades, our attention has focused, quite rightly, on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. That effort must continue. But reducing emissions alone will not cool a roof this summer, protect a vineyard this week or prevent livestock dying during the next heatwave.

We should have been preparing our towns, cities and agricultural landscapes years ago. We should already have been deploying reflective roofs, passive cooling technologies, shaded public spaces, cooler building materials and agricultural systems specifically designed to reduce heat loading. Instead, we are finding ourselves reacting to each successive heatwave as though it were an isolated event rather than part of a long-term trend.

The satellite image of France should concern every one of us. It is not simply another dramatic weather map. It is showing one of Europe’s great agricultural regions reaching land surface temperatures that approach those of the Sahara. That is not normal. It should never feel normal.

If these temperatures become increasingly common, the consequences will extend far beyond uncomfortable summers. They will affect the food we grow, the animals we depend upon, the resilience of our rural communities and the security of Europe’s food supply. Climate change is no longer a distant environmental issue. It is beginning to reshape the landscapes that sustain us, and unless adaptation finally receives the attention it deserves alongside mitigation, we risk discovering just how quickly a temperate continent can begin to resemble somewhere altogether different.

For many people, the instinctive response is to reach for historical comparisons. Britain has always experienced occasional heatwaves. The summer of 1976 remains etched into the national memory as a period of drought, hosepipe bans and relentless sunshine. Others point further back, noting that the Romans cultivated vineyards in parts of Britain during a warmer period nearly two thousand years ago. To some, these examples are evidence that the current conditions are simply part of a long history of natural climate fluctuations.

The comparison is understandable, but it overlooks what makes the present situation different.

The summer of 1976 was undoubtedly exceptional for its time. Yet one of the more revealing climate graphics circulating in recent years asks a simple question: can you identify the summer of 1976 amongst a collection of global temperature anomaly maps from the last decade? Most people cannot. What was once regarded as one of Britain’s most remarkable summers now struggles to stand out against the backdrop of modern warming. The reason is not that 1976 was unremarkable. Rather, it occurred on a significantly cooler planet.

This distinction matters because climate is not simply about individual weather events. The weather has always fluctuated. There have always been unusually hot summers and unusually cold winters. Climate change alters the baseline upon which those events occur. A heatwave striking a world that has already warmed substantially is not equivalent to a heatwave occurring on the cooler planet of half a century ago. The same weather patterns now operate in an atmosphere containing more heat and more moisture than previous generations experienced.

The Roman comparison suffers from a similar problem. While evidence suggests that parts of Europe may have experienced relatively warm conditions during the Roman Warm Period, this was not the same phenomenon that is unfolding today. Modern warming is global. It is visible across continents, oceans, mountain ranges and polar regions. The Roman Warm Period appears to have been largely regional, affecting certain areas more than others. More importantly, it unfolded gradually over centuries. Today’s warming has occurred largely within a human lifetime.

That rate of change may be the most significant difference of all. Civilisations, ecosystems and infrastructure can adapt to slow climatic shifts occurring over hundreds of years. They struggle when change unfolds over a few decades. The challenge facing modern societies is not merely that temperatures are rising, but that they are rising fast enough to outpace many of the assumptions upon which infrastructure and planning decisions were originally based.

This becomes particularly apparent during major heatwaves. The impacts extend far beyond personal discomfort. Transport systems become vulnerable to overheating. Water supplies come under pressure. Agricultural productivity declines. Human health risks increase dramatically, particularly amongst the elderly, the very young and those with pre-existing medical conditions. At the same time, energy systems face growing strain as demand for cooling increases.

France has already experienced some of these pressures. Reports indicate that some nuclear reactors have had to reduce output because river water used for cooling has become unusually warm. There have also been reports of increased jellyfish activity affecting cooling systems at certain facilities. While these incidents may appear unrelated, they share a common cause. The environmental conditions upon which critical infrastructure depends are becoming less predictable and, in some cases, more hostile.

Britain’s electricity system currently offers a glimpse of both the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. At the time of writing, renewable energy sources are providing approximately three-quarters of UK electricity generation. Wind, solar and other renewable technologies have reduced the country’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and have improved resilience against international energy shocks. Yet even a cleaner electricity system cannot entirely escape the consequences of extreme heat. Every component of modern society, from power stations and transmission networks to hospitals, schools and transport infrastructure, ultimately depends upon operating within a certain climatic envelope.

That envelope is changing.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of the current heatwave is not the temperatures themselves, but the scale by which they exceed what would normally be expected. Records are not merely being nudged upwards. They are being threatened by margins measured in multiple degrees. In climate statistics, this is highly unusual. Records tend to fall incrementally. When they begin falling by several degrees at once, it suggests that something more profound than normal weather variability is taking place.

This is why the argument that “we’ve always had hot summers” increasingly misses the point. Of course, Britain has always experienced occasional periods of extreme heat. No serious climate scientist would argue otherwise. The issue is that the conditions producing those extremes are no longer occurring on the same planet that existed in 1976, let alone in Roman times. Global temperatures have risen substantially since then, and the atmosphere now contains levels of carbon dioxide not seen for millions of years.

The result is that weather patterns which might once have produced a notable heatwave are now capable of generating something far more severe. What was once exceptional becomes common. What was once rare becomes expected. New extremes emerge that previous generations never encountered.

Looking at the forecast maps for this week, it is difficult to escape the sense that Europe is entering unfamiliar territory. Vast regions are coloured in shades that would have been remarkable only a few decades ago. The images resemble the sort of projections that once appeared in discussions about the climate of the late twenty-first century. Instead, they are appearing on weather forecasts for the coming days.

The question is therefore no longer whether the climate is changing. The evidence has long since settled that debate. The more pressing question is how quickly societies can adapt to changes that are already underway. Because whatever comparisons are made to 1976, the Romans or any other period in history, there is one fact that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

There is nothing normal about temperatures running sixteen degrees above average across large parts of Europe. There is nothing normal about records being challenged by five or six degrees at a time. And there is nothing normal about watching a climate that many people grew up with gradually disappear within the span of a single lifetime.

The uncomfortable reality is that even if the world suddenly became serious about decarbonisation, temperatures would not rapidly return to safer levels. Carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries. The warming we have already created will continue to affect humanity for decades to come. That is not a political opinion. It is simply the consequence of how the climate system works.

What concerns me is that some people appear to place extraordinary faith in direct air capture and other highly industrialised carbon removal technologies without fully appreciating the scale of the challenge. These schemes are often presented as though they will eventually allow humanity to reverse climate change while avoiding difficult conversations about adaptation and cooling. I find that increasingly difficult to accept.

Current global emissions are approximately 40 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. To remove that quantity of carbon through direct air capture would require an industrial build-out on a scale that borders on the absurd. Millions of capture facilities would need to be manufactured, transported, constructed, powered, maintained and eventually replaced. The energy requirements alone would be staggering. Even if such a programme could be funded, the material, engineering and logistical demands would rival or exceed some of the largest industrial undertakings in human history.

Yet despite decades of discussion and billions in investment, the industry remains measured in thousands of tonnes rather than billions. One of the most prominent companies in the sector, Climeworks, has become a useful case study in the gap between promise and reality. According to recent reporting, its Icelandic facilities have captured only a fraction of their advertised capacity and have struggled to capture enough carbon dioxide even to offset the emissions associated with the company’s own operations and expansion. Rather than removing carbon at climate-relevant scales, the company appears to be struggling to achieve carbon neutrality within its own business model.

This is not simply a question of being patient while the technology matures. The problem is more fundamental. The scale of atmospheric carbon dioxide removal required to materially alter the trajectory of global temperatures is almost unimaginably large. By the time enough direct air capture facilities were built to make a meaningful dent in annual emissions, decades would likely have passed and trillions of pounds would have been spent. Meanwhile, temperatures would continue to rise.

For that reason, I believe policymakers should be extremely cautious about treating direct air capture as any sort of pillar of climate strategy. In its current form, it risks becoming a technological distraction that promises future solutions while diverting attention and resources away from approaches that can deliver tangible benefits today.

That does not mean all forms of carbon drawdown should be abandoned. Far from it. Natural and biological approaches such as ecosystem restoration, reforestation, soil carbon enhancement, wetland protection and other nature-based solutions may have an important role to play. These approaches are not without challenges, but at least they work with natural systems that already remove vast quantities of carbon from the atmosphere every year.

The danger is allowing ourselves to believe that vast fleets of machines will somehow appear in time to solve the problem for us. There is currently little evidence to support that assumption. The climate crisis demands realism, not wishful thinking. If a solution cannot plausibly be deployed at the scale and speed required, then it should not form the foundation of our climate strategy.

That is why I find it extraordinary when people argue that cooling interventions cannot buy time. If carbon removal takes decades to scale, and emissions reductions take decades to fully influence temperatures, what exactly are we supposed to do while the world continues to warm?

The latest temperature projections should make everyone pause. We are rapidly moving into a climate regime unlike anything experienced in modern civilisation. Heatwaves are becoming more intense, more frequent and more prolonged. Some regions are already approaching conditions that challenge human health, food production and economic stability. The impacts are not theoretical. They are happening now.

At the same time, geopolitical realities cannot be ignored. The global energy transition is not occurring in a stable, predictable world. Conflicts, economic shocks, supply chain disruptions and political instability all have the potential to slow progress. Recent tensions in the Middle East provide a reminder of how quickly energy systems can become vulnerable. Any serious disruption to energy supplies has consequences that extend far beyond fuel prices, affecting fertiliser production, food security and the lives of millions of people.

In that context, arguing that humanity should rely solely on emissions reductions and future carbon removal while dismissing cooling interventions strikes me as a remarkably risky position. We should be pursuing every responsible avenue available to reduce harm.

This is particularly true when discussing surface-based thermal management. Increasing surface reflectivity through buildings, infrastructure, urban environments and agricultural systems is fundamentally different from many of the more controversial climate intervention proposals. These approaches can be deployed incrementally, locally and democratically. They can reduce heat exposure, lower cooling demand, improve public health outcomes and help communities adapt to a warmer world.

There is another irony in this debate. Humanity is already modifying the climate system. Industrial aerosols currently mask a significant portion of the warming that greenhouse gases would otherwise produce. Scientists have warned for years that reductions in these aerosols could reveal additional warming. In other words, we are already engaged in large-scale climate modification, whether intentionally or otherwise. The question is not whether humanity influences the climate. The question is whether we are willing to responsibly manage the consequences of that influence.

None of this diminishes the importance of reducing emissions. We must reduce emissions as rapidly as possible because it remains the only proven way to prevent even greater warming in the future. Every tonne of carbon dioxide that is not emitted reduces the burden placed upon future generations and lowers the ultimate level of warming the planet will experience. There should be no ambiguity on this point. Decarbonisation is essential and must remain a central pillar of climate policy.

At the same time, we should be honest about what emissions reductions can and cannot achieve. Even under highly optimistic scenarios, reducing emissions does not rapidly remove the carbon dioxide that has already accumulated in the atmosphere. Nor does it immediately reverse the heat that has already been stored within the oceans, land surfaces and atmosphere. The reality is that the world is likely to experience decades of elevated temperatures even if substantial progress is made on emissions reductions. For the billions of people alive today, the climate challenge is therefore not only about preventing future warming, but also about managing the warming that is already locked into the system.

We should also be cautious about placing excessive faith in speculative industrial carbon removal schemes that remain a long way from meaningful deployment. Direct air capture is frequently presented as a future solution capable of reversing climate change, yet the scale required is almost beyond comprehension. Humanity currently emits around 40 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide every year. Removing even a significant fraction of that through machines would require an industrial mobilisation unlike anything previously attempted. After years of investment and development, the industry remains measured in thousands of tonnes rather than billions. Meanwhile, costs remain high, energy requirements remain enormous and practical deployment remains limited. There may well be a role for carbon removal in the future, but there is little evidence at present that such systems can be scaled quickly enough to materially alter the climate trajectory within the timescales that matter most.

That does not mean all forms of carbon drawdown should be dismissed. Protecting and restoring forests, wetlands, mangroves, grasslands and other natural ecosystems should be pursued aggressively wherever possible. Healthy ecosystems provide multiple benefits, from biodiversity protection to water regulation and carbon storage. However, even the most ambitious nature-based programmes will take decades to remove significant quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. They are necessary, but they are unlikely to provide rapid relief from the escalating impacts of heat that communities are already experiencing.

The climate crisis therefore, demands a more pragmatic and comprehensive response. We need emissions reductions. We need ecosystem restoration. We need resilience. But we must also recognise that humanity is entering a period of dangerous warming that is already unfolding around us. Extreme heat is no longer a future risk. It is a present reality. Across the world, heatwaves are becoming longer, more intense and more frequent. Water resources are coming under increasing pressure from rising temperatures and evaporation. Agricultural systems are facing growing heat stress. Infrastructure designed for a cooler climate is being pushed beyond its limits. The impacts are no longer theoretical. They are happening now.

That is why cooling interventions deserve serious consideration. The objective is not to replace emissions reductions or avoid difficult decisions about fossil fuels. The objective is to reduce harm while the long process of decarbonisation continues. If temperatures can be lowered, even modestly, across cities, agricultural regions, water bodies and vulnerable ecosystems, the benefits can be substantial. Lower temperatures can reduce heat-related illness and mortality, decrease energy demand, slow water loss through evaporation, improve agricultural productivity and strengthen resilience against climate extremes. These are not abstract benefits. They directly affect the security, wellbeing and prosperity of billions of people.

Pretending that we can simply wait for emissions reductions and future carbon removal technologies to solve the problem is not a climate strategy. It is a hope that future generations will somehow develop solutions at a scale that humanity has so far shown little evidence of being able to achieve. The climate challenge is too urgent and too complex to rely on a single pathway.

We should therefore pursue every responsible option available to us. We should reduce emissions as rapidly as possible. We should restore and protect natural ecosystems. We should strengthen resilience in our communities and infrastructure. And we should actively explore ways to cool the environments upon which civilisation depends. Protecting cities from deadly heat, safeguarding water resources from depletion, preserving agricultural productivity and reducing thermal stress across landscapes are not distractions from climate action. They are climate action.

The choice is not between reducing carbon dioxide and reducing temperatures. We must do both. The scale of the challenge before us demands nothing less.

Europe is warming faster than any other continent on Earth. While much of the public discussion around climate change still focuses on future risks, the reality is that many of the impacts are already unfolding across the continent. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense and longer lasting. Droughts are becoming increasingly severe. Rivers are reaching historically low levels. Agricultural systems are coming under growing pressure. The question is no longer whether Europe will need to adapt to a hotter climate. The question is whether adaptation can happen quickly enough.

One of the most striking examples came in the summer of 2022 when Europe experienced what many scientists described as the worst drought in centuries. Across the continent, rivers shrank dramatically. In France, water restrictions were imposed across large parts of the country as river levels fell to record lows. In Italy, the River Po, the country’s longest river and one of its most important agricultural lifelines, fell to levels not seen in living memory. Farmers watched crops wither as irrigation supplies dwindled. Saltwater from the Adriatic Sea pushed further inland as river flows weakened, damaging agricultural land and threatening water supplies.

Perhaps the most symbolic image of that summer came from Germany’s Rhine River. The Rhine is not simply a river; it is one of Europe’s most important economic arteries, carrying coal, petroleum products, chemicals, grains and industrial materials across the heart of the continent. During the drought, water levels at key navigation points fell so low that commercial shipping was brought close to a standstill. Barges that would normally travel fully loaded were forced to carry only a fraction of their usual cargo. Freight costs surged. Supply chains were disrupted. Industries dependent on river transport faced serious challenges.

As the water receded, it revealed a glimpse of Europe’s past. Long-submerged shipwrecks emerged from the riverbed. Unexploded wartime munitions became visible. Most striking of all were the so-called “hunger stones”, rocks placed in rivers centuries ago and engraved with warnings from previous generations. These stones were traditionally exposed only during severe droughts and carried messages intended for future generations. One famous inscription simply reads: “If you see me, weep.” For many observers, it was difficult to imagine a more powerful symbol of the changing climate than centuries-old warnings reappearing across Europe’s rivers.

The consequences of extreme heat extend far beyond agriculture and river transport. Many people are unaware that large parts of Europe’s energy infrastructure depend on abundant supplies of water. France, for example, relies heavily on nuclear power, and many of its nuclear power stations use river water for cooling. During periods of extreme heat and drought, river temperatures rise and water levels fall, reducing the availability of cooling water. In recent years, this has forced restrictions on power generation at certain facilities precisely when electricity demand for cooling is increasing. Heatwaves therefore create a double challenge, increasing demand while simultaneously placing strain on supply.

The danger is amplified by the fact that Europe was never designed for these conditions. Unlike many parts of the United States, the Middle East or East Asia, widespread air conditioning has historically been uncommon across much of Europe. Buildings were designed to retain warmth during winter rather than reject heat during summer. Streets were laid out without consideration for prolonged periods of extreme heat. Public infrastructure was built for a climate that no longer exists.

Nowhere is this challenge more visible than in Europe’s cities. Urban areas absorb vast quantities of solar energy through dark roofs, roads, pavements and building surfaces. These materials store heat throughout the day and slowly release it during the evening, creating the well-known urban heat island effect. During major heatwaves, city centres can remain several degrees warmer than surrounding rural areas, exposing millions of people to dangerous overnight temperatures that prevent recovery from daytime heat stress.

Many adaptation discussions focus heavily on tree planting and urban greening. Trees undoubtedly play an important role. They provide shade, improve local comfort and deliver numerous environmental benefits. However, it is important not to confuse shading with cooling at the scale of an entire city. While trees can reduce temperatures beneath their canopy, they do not necessarily address the broader challenge of how much solar energy an urban area absorbs overall. Most vegetation absorbs a significant proportion of incoming sunlight. If Europe is serious about adapting to a hotter future, it must also address the thermal properties of the materials used throughout its built environment.

This is where reflective materials, cooling surfaces and high-albedo technologies become increasingly important. For decades, urban development has prioritised cost, durability and appearance, while paying relatively little attention to how buildings and infrastructure interact with solar energy. That approach is beginning to change. Reflective roofs, cooling paints, advanced thermal coatings and radiative cooling materials are attracting growing interest because they tackle the problem at its source. Rather than simply managing the consequences of heat, they reduce the amount of heat absorbed in the first place.

Much of my own work focuses on researching and developing these types of materials. The underlying principle is remarkably simple. If surfaces absorb less solar energy, they heat up less. If they heat up less, buildings, streets and public spaces become cooler. At sufficient scales, increasing the reflectivity of urban environments can help reduce surface temperatures, lower cooling demand and improve resilience during extreme heat events. Some of the most advanced materials now under development go even further, reflecting sunlight while simultaneously emitting heat back through the atmosphere into space.

These technologies will not solve climate change on their own, but they are likely to become increasingly important as the world continues to warm. If current trends continue, we may be heading towards 2°C of warming above pre-industrial levels within the coming decades. At that point, what today feels like an exceptional heatwave may become increasingly commonplace.

The approaching heatwave should therefore not be viewed as an isolated weather event. It is another reminder of the direction in which Europe is travelling. The continent’s rivers, agriculture, energy systems and cities are already showing signs of strain. The warnings are no longer theoretical. They are appearing in dried riverbeds, in disrupted transport networks, in struggling crops and in rising summer mortality figures.

Europe’s challenge over the next decade will not simply be reducing emissions. It will be learning how to live safely in a much hotter world. Adaptation is no longer optional. It is becoming one of the defining challenges of our time.

The reality is more nuanced than either position suggests.

Climate change presents serious risks, and it is entirely possible that humanity will need a portfolio of responses that includes emissions reductions, adaptation measures, carbon removal and potentially some forms of climate intervention. Research into these options is both sensible and necessary. However, the fact that a technology may be capable of influencing the climate does not automatically mean we understand all of the consequences of deploying it at scale.

This is particularly true when discussing Stratospheric Aerosol Injection, a proposal that seeks to cool the planet by releasing reflective particles into the stratosphere. The scientific basis for the concept is sound. We know that reflective aerosols can reduce incoming solar radiation because nature has already demonstrated the principle repeatedly. In many ways, volcanoes represent the largest and most powerful climate intervention experiments ever conducted.

The question is not whether atmospheric aerosols can cool the Earth.

The question is whether we fully understand the risks of operating our own cooling programme within a climate system that remains influenced by natural forces beyond our control.

One of the most important lessons comes from the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia in April 1815. Tambora remains the largest volcanic eruption in recorded human history. The explosion was so powerful that it injected vast quantities of sulphur compounds high into the atmosphere, where they formed a reflective veil around much of the globe. Estimates vary, but scientists generally believe that global temperatures fell by approximately 0.4°C to 0.7°C in the years that followed.

At first glance, that may not sound particularly dramatic. After all, public discussions about climate change frequently revolve around temperature differences of one or two degrees. Yet Tambora demonstrated that relatively small changes in global average temperature can produce consequences far beyond what those numbers alone might suggest.

The year 1816 became known as the Year Without a Summer. Frosts occurred during June and July in parts of North America. Snow fell during months when farmers would normally have expected warm weather. Crops failed across large parts of Europe. Harvests were severely reduced. Food prices rose sharply. Famine spread through several regions. Disease followed malnutrition. Social unrest increased. Migration accelerated as communities sought more stable conditions elsewhere.

The cooling itself was only part of the story. Changes in weather patterns, rainfall and growing conditions amplified the impacts. What Tambora revealed was not simply that the climate had cooled, but that societies can be remarkably sensitive to rapid climatic shifts, even when the change in average global temperature appears modest.

Less than seventy years later, another eruption offered a further lesson. In August 1883, Krakatoa erupted with extraordinary violence. The explosion was heard thousands of kilometres away and generated tsunamis that killed tens of thousands of people. While the immediate devastation was immense, the eruption also had global climatic consequences.

Sulphur dioxide injected into the atmosphere spread around the world and contributed to measurable cooling. Although the temperature impacts were generally smaller than those associated with Tambora, they were still significant. Scientists estimate that global temperatures fell by approximately 0.4°C to 0.6°C. Atmospheric conditions changed noticeably. Extraordinary red and orange sunsets were observed around the world for months and even years afterwards. The eruption became one of the first truly global environmental events of the modern era, demonstrating how a single volcanic eruption could influence atmospheric conditions on a planetary scale.

What makes Krakatoa particularly interesting is that it occurred during a period when global trade networks were becoming more developed. Railways, shipping routes and expanding international commerce helped absorb some of the economic shocks that might have proven even more severe in an earlier era. Even so, the eruption served as another reminder that natural processes can alter the Earth’s energy balance in ways that humanity neither predicts nor controls.

The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 provides perhaps the most relevant modern example because it occurred during the satellite age. For the first time, scientists were able to observe in detail how a major volcanic aerosol cloud spread through the atmosphere and influenced the climate.

Pinatubo injected an estimated 17 to 20 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere. Over the following months, global temperatures fell by roughly 0.5°C. Satellite observations documented the formation and evolution of the aerosol cloud. Scientists were able to monitor changes in atmospheric radiation, cloud behaviour and temperature. To this day, Pinatubo remains one of the most important natural analogues used in discussions of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection.

The eruption demonstrated that aerosols can indeed cool the planet. However, it also demonstrated something else. The cooling was not distributed evenly. Atmospheric circulation patterns changed. Rainfall patterns shifted. Some regions experienced different impacts from others. The climate system responded in complex ways that extended beyond temperature alone.

This is where the discussion becomes particularly relevant to modern geoengineering proposals.

Many modelling studies suggest that a large-scale Stratospheric Aerosol Injection programme might require the release of several million tonnes of sulphur dioxide into the stratosphere each year. Depending on the assumptions used, injections in the range of approximately 5 to 10 million tonnes annually could potentially offset around 0.5°C to 1°C of warming.

Suppose humanity eventually develops the technological capability to undertake such a programme. The specialised aircraft exist. The political agreements have been negotiated. The monitoring systems are operational. The cooling programme has been running successfully for a decade and is contributing approximately 1°C of cooling.

At first glance, that scenario may appear manageable. The cooling target has been achieved, and the programme is operating as intended.

However, nature does not stop participating simply because humanity has begun its own intervention.

Imagine that during the operation of this programme, a volcanic eruption comparable to Pinatubo occurs. The atmosphere would not distinguish between human-generated aerosols and volcanic aerosols. Both would contribute to reducing incoming solar radiation. The cooling effect from the volcanic eruption would therefore be added to the cooling effect already being produced by the geoengineering programme.

Now imagine that the eruption is not comparable to Pinatubo but to Tambora.

Suddenly, the world could find itself experiencing a level of cooling substantially greater than originally intended. Agricultural systems designed around one set of climatic assumptions could face another. Growing seasons might shorten. Rainfall patterns could change unexpectedly. Food production could decline in some regions. Commodity prices could rise. Governments could find themselves attempting to manage not only the consequences of a volcanic eruption but also the consequences of an ongoing climate intervention programme operating at the same time.

This does not mean such an outcome is inevitable. It does not mean Stratospheric Aerosol Injection should be abandoned. What it does mean is that these scenarios deserve careful consideration before deployment decisions are made.

One of the most important principles in risk management is that systems should be evaluated not only under normal conditions but also under unusual and unexpected conditions. Engineers do not simply ask whether a bridge works on a sunny day. They ask how it performs during storms, floods and earthquakes. Similarly, climate interventions should be evaluated not only under ideal assumptions but also under scenarios involving volcanic eruptions, unexpected atmospheric responses and other natural disruptions.

This is particularly important because the climate system remains only partially understood. Scientists have made extraordinary progress in recent decades, yet uncertainties remain regarding clouds, precipitation, regional climate responses and ecological impacts. These uncertainties do not necessarily mean intervention is impossible. They do mean humility is warranted.

As someone who works in climate cooling, I do not believe the answer is to stop investigating these options. The risks associated with climate change are too significant for that. We should continue researching cooling technologies. We should continue improving our understanding of how the climate system works. We should continue evaluating a wide range of interventions, including surface-based approaches, atmospheric approaches and other emerging concepts.

What we should not do is assume that because we can influence the climate, we automatically understand all of the consequences of doing so.

The history of Tambora, Krakatoa and Pinatubo offers a valuable reminder that nature remains an active participant in the climate system. Volcanoes have already demonstrated both the power and the complexity of atmospheric cooling. Before humanity attempts to conduct its own planetary-scale climate intervention, it would be wise to spend time considering how such programmes might interact with the interventions that nature may choose to deliver herself.

The challenge facing humanity is not simply whether we can cool the Earth. The challenge is whether we can do so responsibly within a dynamic and partially unpredictable system that continues to operate according to its own rules. That question deserves as much attention as the engineering itself.

What makes these events particularly troubling is that many of those who have been targeted are the very people who help keep our society functioning. Across Northern Ireland, immigrants play essential roles within the NHS, social care, hospitality, agriculture, construction and countless other sectors. They care for our elderly, staff our hospitals, support our businesses and contribute enormously to our communities. Without their efforts, many of the services upon which we all depend would struggle to operate. Like anyone else, they deserve the right to live peacefully and securely, free from fear and intimidation.

As I watched events unfold, however, I found myself reflecting on something larger than the immediate circumstances. What struck me most was not simply the violence itself, but how quickly normality appeared to dissolve. Within a remarkably short period of time, groups of masked individuals were effectively controlling parts of the streets, deciding who belonged and who did not, targeting homes and intimidating families. The rule of law, which we often take for granted, suddenly appeared far less certain than many of us would like to believe.

It is tempting to view such scenes as extraordinary exceptions, something confined to moments of particular tension or unrest. Yet history repeatedly demonstrates how fragile civil society can be when placed under sufficient pressure. The stability that most of us experience in our daily lives depends upon a vast network of functioning institutions, reliable infrastructure, economic security and social trust. We assume that food will continue to arrive in the supermarkets, that energy will flow through the grid, that emergency services will respond when needed and that the structures of government will continue to operate effectively. Most of the time, those assumptions are justified. However, they are still assumptions.

What makes this reflection particularly relevant is that we are not discussing a distant hypothetical future. We are already living through a period of significant global instability. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues to create uncertainty around energy markets and global trade routes. The continued disruption associated with the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial proportion of the world’s oil and gas supplies pass, remains a matter of international concern. Added to this are wider geopolitical tensions, supply chain vulnerabilities, inflationary pressures and the growing impacts of climate change. None of us can say with confidence what the next six months or year will bring, nor how these interconnected pressures may affect the availability and affordability of energy, food and other essential goods.

This is why I sometimes find the popular image of individual survivalism to be misguided. There is a belief in some quarters that resilience can be achieved primarily through personal preparation: stockpiling supplies, installing solar panels, building self-sufficiency and retreating behind increasingly secure boundaries. While there is certainly value in sensible preparedness, the events we have witnessed in Belfast provide an important reminder that no individual exists independently of the society around them. If social cohesion begins to break down, if institutions weaken and if large numbers of people become frightened, desperate or angry, then the greatest threat is not the absence of supplies but the absence of trust and order.

The uncomfortable reality is that societies under severe strain do not fail neatly or rationally. They fail through fear, division, scapegoating and conflict. The image of masked individuals roaming the streets, deciding who should be intimidated, removed or targeted, should give all of us pause for thought. It is a reminder that when institutions weaken, and the rule of law begins to falter, the protections that most of us take for granted can disappear remarkably quickly.

This is why the popular fantasy of complete self-sufficiency is often misplaced. Some imagine that resilience simply means accumulating supplies, installing solar panels, storing food and preparing to weather whatever crisis may come. Yet if a society truly begins to fracture, the greatest threat may not be the shortage itself but the desperate people around you. If you possess something that others need and the institutions that normally maintain order are no longer functioning effectively, there may be nobody left to prevent them from taking it. Property rights, security systems, emergency plans and carefully accumulated supplies only have value when there is a functioning society to uphold them. The lesson is that no individual can ultimately separate their fate from that of the wider community. When social cohesion breaks down, everyone becomes vulnerable.

For that reason, the real lesson from Belfast is not simply the need to condemn racism and violence, although that remains essential. The deeper lesson is that resilience is fundamentally collective. It depends upon strong communities, trusted institutions, functioning public services, economic opportunity, social cohesion and a shared commitment to looking after one another during difficult times. It depends upon addressing the challenges posed by climate change, resource pressures and growing inequalities before they become crises. Most importantly, it depends upon recognising that our security ultimately rests not in what we can protect for ourselves, but in the strength and stability of the society we build together.

The events of recent days should horrify us, but they should also serve as a warning. Civilisation is not as permanent as we sometimes imagine. The conditions that sustain peace, stability and prosperity require constant maintenance and care. If we wish to navigate the increasingly uncertain decades ahead, we must invest not only in physical infrastructure and technological solutions, but also in the social fabric that holds communities together. Because when that fabric begins to unravel, the consequences can arrive far more quickly than most people expect.

Las Vegas is perhaps the most fitting symbol of modern civilisation ever constructed. A city built on gambling, risk, and the belief that fortune will continue smiling tomorrow just as it did yesterday. Yet the greatest gamble was never made inside the casinos. It was the decision to build a city of more than two million people in a desert and assume that water, energy, and economic growth would always be available to sustain it.

For decades, that gamble appeared successful. Tourists arrived in their millions. Hotels grew larger. New suburbs spread across the landscape. Air conditioning made summer temperatures bearable. Vast reservoirs created the illusion that water scarcity had been permanently solved. Las Vegas became a monument to the idea that technology could overcome nature.

The problem is that nature does not care about human ambition.

The city exists in the Mojave Desert for a reason. It is one of the driest regions in North America. Long before the arrival of casinos, highways, and golf courses, the environment itself was signalling that large-scale human settlement was constrained by a simple fact: there is not enough water. The desert was never intended to support millions of people. The only way Las Vegas could exist was by importing vast quantities of water and energy from elsewhere.

That arrangement depended upon a relatively stable climate and a Colorado River system capable of supplying ever-growing demand. Both assumptions are now beginning to fail.

The Colorado River is already over-allocated. More water has been promised to cities, farms, and industries than the river can reliably provide. Climate change is making the situation worse. Rising temperatures increase evaporation, reduce snowpack in the Rocky Mountains, and diminish the flow of water reaching reservoirs. The result is a slow but relentless decline in the region’s hydrological security.

Federal projections for Lake Mead and Lake Powell have become increasingly alarming. Water levels continue to approach critical thresholds. Hydroelectric generation is threatened. Emergency measures are becoming routine. Yet despite these warnings, public discussion often remains focused on how to preserve the status quo rather than confronting a more uncomfortable question: should a city of this scale ever have existed in such a location in the first place?

Las Vegas is often celebrated as a triumph of engineering. In reality, it may prove to be one of history’s most expensive examples of ecological denial.

The city’s existence depends upon enormous quantities of external resources. It depends on aircraft carrying millions of tourists into the desert every year. It depends upon energy-intensive cooling systems operating continuously through increasingly extreme heat. It depends upon water infrastructure stretching hundreds of miles. It depends upon a global economy capable of supporting a luxury entertainment industry in an environment fundamentally hostile to human habitation.

Every one of those dependencies is becoming more fragile.

There is a tendency to view environmental crises as sudden events. Popular culture teaches us to expect dramatic collapses and apocalyptic moments. Reality is usually less theatrical. Systems become progressively harder and more expensive to maintain. Water restrictions become stricter. Energy demand rises. Infrastructure requires constant upgrades. Insurance costs increase. Economic activity becomes more vulnerable to disruption. The city remains standing, but the cost of keeping it alive grows year after year.

Las Vegas may survive for decades in this manner, but survival and sustainability are not the same thing.

The deeper problem is that the city embodies a worldview that helped create the climate crisis in the first place. It represents the belief that economic growth should always take precedence over ecological limits. That if a resource becomes scarce, technology will somehow provide an alternative. That if an environment is unsuitable for large-scale settlement, engineering can simply override the constraints imposed by nature.

These assumptions have driven not only the growth of Las Vegas but also the fossil fuel economy that underpins modern civilisation. The same industries that enabled the city to flourish have contributed to the warming atmosphere that is now threatening its future. The flights bringing tourists to the casinos, the energy consumed by giant resorts, and the endless pursuit of growth all form part of the same story.

It is therefore difficult to escape the conclusion that Las Vegas is not merely confronting a local water crisis. It is confronting the consequences of a development model that ignored environmental reality for generations.

The irony is almost perfect. The world’s most famous gambling city may ultimately become a monument to the greatest gamble humanity has ever taken: the belief that endless growth could continue on a finite planet.

In every casino, the same rule eventually applies. The house always wins.

In the case of Las Vegas, the house is not a corporation or a casino owner. It is physics. It is hydrology. It is ecology. It is a climate system that does not respond to marketing campaigns, political promises, or economic forecasts.

For decades, humanity believed it could beat those odds.

Now the bill is arriving.

And unlike the gamblers leaving the casino floor, there may be no second chance to place another bet.

The Titanic remains one of the most powerful stories ever told about human confidence, progress, and vulnerability. More than a century later, the ship still occupies a unique place in our collective imagination. It represented the very best of its age. It was an engineering marvel, celebrated as the pinnacle of human achievement and, by some, regarded as practically unsinkable. It embodied a belief that technology, wealth, and progress would continue to carry society forward regardless of the obstacles ahead.

Yet the tragedy of the Titanic was not simply that it struck an iceberg. The deeper lesson is that life on board continued for some time after the collision. The lights remained on. The dining rooms remained open. The music continued to play. Many passengers, particularly those on the upper decks, were largely insulated from the reality of what had already begun below the waterline. The ship still looked magnificent. It still felt safe. To many, the disaster was not yet visible.

I often think about that image when reflecting on modern civilisation.

Across much of the developed world, daily life continues with remarkable normality. People go to work, book holidays, buy new products, upgrade their phones, order goods from around the world, and make plans for years into the future. Financial markets rise and fall. Governments change. Sporting events fill stadiums. Restaurants remain full. The systems upon which modern life depends continue to function, and because they continue to function, there is a tendency to assume that they always will.

That assumption may prove to be one of the defining mistakes of our age.

The climate crisis is often discussed as though it is a distant future problem, something that will eventually arrive and demand our attention. In reality, it is already here. We are witnessing record temperatures, increasingly severe heatwaves, prolonged droughts, growing pressure on water resources, and rising instability across agricultural systems. At the same time, geopolitical tensions are disrupting supply chains, reshaping energy markets, and exposing the fragility of systems that many people assumed were permanent.

Like the passengers on the Titanic, we often mistake apparent normality for actual security.

Perhaps the most important aspect of the Titanic analogy is that not everyone experienced the voyage in the same way. The passengers in first class occupied luxurious cabins, enjoyed extraordinary meals, and experienced a level of comfort unavailable to most people of the era. Those travelling in steerage experienced a very different reality. Yet despite those differences, everyone was ultimately travelling on the same vessel.

There is a parallel here that is difficult to ignore.

Today, the highest consuming individuals and societies generate vastly more emissions than the world’s poorest communities. The people taking the most flights, living in the largest homes, consuming the most resources, and enjoying the greatest material wealth are often among those most insulated from the immediate consequences of climate change. Meanwhile, many of the communities contributing least to the problem are already experiencing some of its harshest impacts through extreme heat, water insecurity, crop failures, and economic disruption.

In many ways, the climate crisis is not simply an environmental challenge. It is also a question of fairness.

Too often, public discussions focus almost entirely on technology. New energy systems, new fuels, new machines, new forms of engineering, and new infrastructure are frequently presented as though they alone will solve the problem. Technology undoubtedly has a role to play, but I increasingly worry that we have become attached to a comforting narrative in which innovation allows us to avoid confronting more difficult questions about consumption and limits.

The uncomfortable reality is that no amount of technological advancement changes the basic mathematics of a finite planet. If consumption continues to expand indefinitely, if resource use continues to accelerate indefinitely, and if economic success remains tied almost exclusively to ever increasing material throughput, then technological progress alone is unlikely to resolve the underlying problem.

This is not an argument against innovation. It is an argument for directing innovation towards resilience rather than excess.

The goal should not be to preserve every aspect of a high consumption lifestyle exactly as it exists today. The goal should be to build societies that can prosper while using fewer resources, generating fewer emissions, and placing less strain on the systems that sustain them. That requires a cultural shift as much as a technological one. It requires us to think differently about growth, efficiency, waste, and what genuinely contributes to human wellbeing.

At the same time, we must recognise that some degree of climate change is now unavoidable. Even if emissions were reduced dramatically tomorrow, the warming already embedded within the system means that adaptation will become increasingly important over the coming decades. The challenge is therefore not simply preventing future warming. It is learning how to live safely within a warmer world.

This is where I believe surface based cooling approaches deserve far greater attention than they currently receive.

One of the reasons I find them compelling is that they do not force a choice between adaptation and mitigation. They can contribute to both simultaneously. Cooling materials deployed on buildings can reduce indoor temperatures and make homes, schools, and hospitals safer during extreme heat. Cooling interventions in urban environments can reduce heat stress and help address the urban heat island effect. Cooling approaches applied to water systems may help reduce evaporation losses and protect increasingly valuable water resources. Similar principles can potentially be applied within agricultural settings to improve resilience against rising temperatures and heat stress.

These are practical benefits that communities need today, regardless of what happens globally.

At larger scales, such approaches may also contribute to broader cooling effects. Unlike many proposed climate interventions, they are inherently distributed. They can be deployed incrementally. They can be owned locally. They do not require a single institution to control them. They do not depend upon continuous global coordination. A farmer can benefit from them. A city can benefit from them. A community can benefit from them. Yet collectively they can also contribute to a wider climate response.

There is something fundamentally democratic about that model.

The lesson I take from the Titanic is not that disaster is inevitable. It is that reality eventually asserts itself whether people acknowledge it or not. The passengers enjoying the finest cabins on the ship were not protected by their wealth from the laws of physics. The water eventually reached every deck.

Climate change presents a similar challenge. The atmosphere does not recognise political ideology, wealth, social status, or national borders. The physical realities of a warming planet will eventually affect everyone, even if they do so unequally and at different times.

The question is not whether the iceberg exists. We can already see it. The question is whether we continue behaving as though the voyage can proceed unchanged.

Perhaps the greatest mistake we could make is believing that because the lights are still on and the music is still playing, the ship itself is not taking on water. The signs of stress are already visible. The challenge before us is not simply to invent our way out of the problem. It is to recognise that the way we consume, the way we value resources, and the way we prepare for the future must evolve alongside our technologies.

The passengers of the Titanic never had the opportunity to redesign their ship after the collision. We still do. But that opportunity becomes smaller with every year that passes. The longer we spend convincing ourselves that nothing fundamental needs to change, the more difficult the necessary adjustments become.

The real lesson of the Titanic is not that ships can sink. It is that denial can be every bit as dangerous as the iceberg itself.

The reality is far more troubling.

What is often overlooked in these discussions is the sheer permanence of the commitment that such a system would require once deployed at scale. SAI is not a one-off intervention. It is not a project that can simply pause for a few years during political instability, economic crisis, or geopolitical conflict. It would demand continuous operation on a planetary scale, year after year, decade after decade.

That means constant industrial activity. Constant aircraft production. Constant fuel supply chains. Constant take-offs. Constant coordination between nations that increasingly struggle to cooperate even on far smaller issues. It would effectively require humanity to maintain a permanent atmospheric engineering programme without interruption.

Recent events in the Middle East should give us pause.

We have once again seen how rapidly geopolitical instability can disrupt energy markets, shipping routes, industrial systems, and international logistics. Entire sectors of the global economy remain deeply interconnected and vulnerable to shocks that are often impossible to predict in advance. The sight of cargo ships stranded or rerouted, fuel prices surging, supply chains slowing, and political tensions spilling across borders is a reminder of just how fragile supposedly stable global systems can become.

Critically, recent events have also demonstrated how vulnerable aviation fuel supplies are to geopolitical disruption. Modern jet aircraft depend overwhelmingly on kerosene-based jet fuel systems, and any major interruption to global fuel production, refining, or transport networks could rapidly impact aviation capacity itself.

Now imagine applying that fragility to a planetary cooling system that cannot safely stop.

This is where the issue of termination shock becomes impossible to ignore. If SAI were masking a significant degree of warming and the programme was then interrupted suddenly, whether through economic collapse, war, political fragmentation, fuel shortages, or global instability, temperatures could rebound rapidly. The warming that had been artificially suppressed would return in a compressed period of time.

The consequences of such a shock could be devastating for ecosystems, agriculture, infrastructure, and human health. Species and food systems already struggling to adapt to gradual warming would instead face an abrupt climatic acceleration.

This is one of the central reasons why I have never viewed SAI as a desirable long-term pathway, despite its theoretical cooling potential. The challenge is not simply whether it can cool the planet temporarily. The challenge is whether humanity can realistically guarantee uninterrupted operation for generations in an increasingly unstable and fragmented world.

Even securing the initial political consensus would be extraordinarily difficult. Yet political agreement is only the beginning. The larger issue is maintaining continuity through future crises that we cannot yet predict.

There are also profound democratic questions. Who controls the thermostat of the Earth? Which countries decide the acceptable global temperature? Who bears responsibility if rainfall patterns shift or agricultural systems are disrupted elsewhere? These questions become even more concerning in a century likely to be defined by geopolitical tension and resource competition.

For these reasons, I continue to believe that surface-based approaches deserve far greater attention.

Unlike atmospheric injection systems, surface-based cooling techniques can be deployed in a distributed and decentralised way. They can be owned locally, adapted regionally, and implemented incrementally. They also provide dual benefits. They can reduce urban heat and the urban heat island effect while simultaneously helping agriculture, water conservation, and public health.

In a warming world, adaptation and mitigation increasingly overlap.

Protecting water resources alone will become one of the defining challenges of this century. One only has to look at the worsening conditions across parts of the western and midwestern United States, where reservoirs and river systems are under enormous strain. The fact that even the Hoover Dam has faced operational disruption due to declining water levels would once have seemed extraordinary.

Suppressing evaporation, reducing surface temperatures, protecting agricultural productivity, and improving human thermal survivability are not secondary issues. They are central to maintaining stability for a global population of more than eight billion people.

The appeal of SAI is understandable. Faced with escalating heat extremes and political paralysis on emissions reductions, many are understandably searching for emergency measures. But emergency measures that themselves depend on flawless long-term industrial continuity may introduce an entirely new category of systemic risk.

The climate crisis is already forcing humanity to confront uncomfortable realities. One of those realities may be that resilience matters just as much as theoretical effectiveness. A cooling system that depends on uninterrupted global industrial stability in an era of growing instability may ultimately prove far more dangerous than many are willing to admit.
