North Dakota
On August 26, the North Dakota Community Foundation (NDCF) announced the appointment of Shawn McKenna as a communications and marketing associate, working out of its Bismarck office. He previously worked at Clearwater Communications where he served as executive director of the North Dakota Association of Nonprofit Organizations and the administrator of the North Dakota Association for Lifelong Learning.

Ohio
On August 28, the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation announced grants totaling more than $875,000, including 11 responsive grants and 119 grants from donor-advised funds. Recipients include the Children’s Museum of Findlay ($35,000), Imagine for Youth Foundation ($10,000), Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation ($6,308), and On Target Outfitters ($6,784).

Rhode Island
On August 27, the Rhode Island Foundation announced more than $5.4 million in grants to dozens of organizations across the state, particularly those working in the areas of health care, housing, and job training. Recipients include Aquidneck Community Table ($65,000), the Creative Reuse Center ($15,000), Crisis Intervention Teams of R.I. ($65,000), and Harbor of Hope ($30,000).

South Carolina
On August 12, the Coastal Community Foundation of South Carolina announced the launch of the Tri-County Housing Futures Fund (THFF), a $100 million initiative aimed at addressing the shortage of safe and affordable housing in the region. The three-year campaign aims to fuel a three-pronged approach to expanding housing opportunity through community partnership: by improving strategies to create new for-sale and rental homes; providing repair opportunities to existing homes; and providing capital to finance housing. THFF will use blended capital through a combination of grants, loans, and co-investment to support a variety of projects and multiply impact. All housing created through THFF will be deed protected for 50 years or more to create long-term affordability.

There can be no doubt that America’s democracy is under attack. The most recent slate of U.S. Supreme Court decisions constitutes yet another assault to the foundations of American democracy: our voting rights, our freedom of speech, even our very citizenship are all being threatened. In this moment, it is incumbent upon institutional philanthropy to stand as a bulwark between authoritarianism and our most treasured democratic principles – and I maintain the best way for philanthropic institutions to fulfill their roles as guardians of democracy is through funding community organizing.

Effective, successful community organizing happens when the people most affected by an issue work collectively to build and execute a strategy to resolve that issue - complex, multi-tiered, multi-year efforts engaging multiple actors across multiple fronts. There is a direct throughline from the efforts to end slavery, win women’s suffrage, establish labor rights, advance civil rights, and today’s fight for human rights. The mass movements that led to these changes far exceeded the legal or political arguments of the elite – everyday people are the true actors of democratic progress.

For many people, even those of us in the philanthropic community, the phrase “community organizing” conjures images of street protests or shouting matches in public meetings. But successful organizing campaigns are incredibly sophisticated machines – cost-effective, means-tested, evidence-based methodology that actually solve problems. Indeed, if democracy is to endure, strengthening and sustaining community organizing is the only strategy that has ever worked.

My perspective comes from years of experience as a grassroots organizer. When I joined the century-old Wieboldt Foundation in December 2020 as executive director, I came into a philanthropy navigating the simultaneous crises of political upheaval, a pandemic, and a so-called nationwide “racial reckoning.” I felt fortunate to join a family foundation that was ahead of its time in many ways – chief among them, explicitly funding community organizing for five decades. That’s because I have seen firsthand how community organizing is how real and durable progress is made.

As an example, here in Chicago, community organizing groups created the Parent Mentor Program in 1995 as a way to bring parents and community residents with similar cultural backgrounds to students directly into their classrooms to improve educational outcomes in reading, math, and standardized testing. The program has proven to be incredibly effective – in one instance, reading proficiency skyrocketed from 24% to 74% in a single year – and has grown from a single-school intervention to a statewide effort with dedicated support in the Illinois state budget.

The Parent Mentor Program is also incredibly cost-effective. At $14M allocated to serve more than 33,000 low-income students that year, that’s roughly $400 per student. Compare that to a similar highly-regarded national service program that costs $1.5M to serve 1200 students – about three times the per-student cost at approximately $1200.

The grassroots Parent Mentor Program also has built-in benefits the social service program cannot provide: families who benefit from the stipends received by the mentors for their dedicated service; the expertise and esteem gained through the civic engagement of the organizing staff and volunteers; and the consistent track record of mentors utilizing the program to springboard them into the teaching profession far eclipses what the alternative social service program provides. Moreover, the community groups that created this intervention continue to win positive change in the material conditions for the residents of their respective communities beyond improved educational outcomes for their children.

Policy reform without power-building is empty. Community organizing is democracy’s engine. At every pivotal moment in our nation’s history, progress has come from ordinary people building extraordinary power together. Philanthropy has a choice in this moment of democratic fragility: it can continue to fund short-term programs that treat symptoms, or it can invest in the long-term power-building that has always been the antidote to authoritarianism. When philanthropy resources organizing at scale, communities create solutions that are more effective, efficient, and enduring than anything designed from the top down – building leaders, civic muscle, and the conditions for real self-governance.

If democracy is to survive – and if it is ever to become the inclusive, participatory system we aspire to – philanthropy must treat community organizing as core democratic infrastructure. The question is not whether organizing works. The question is whether philanthropy will meet this moment with the courage and commitment required. Our democracy depends on it.

Connecticut
On August 13, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven announced that its Community Fund for Women & Girls awarded $170,000 through its Pathways for Women and Girls grant program. The funding will assist 15 nonprofits that are helping women and girls succeed at home, in their careers and in their communities. The programs help more than 1,500 local women in the areas of financial and digital literacy; health and wellness; job training and coaching; and organizing, advocacy, and leadership. Recipients include Anchor Health ($15,000), Elena’s Light ($15,000), IRIS (15,000), and Phenomenal I Am ($10,000).

Illinois
More than 92 local organizations and nonprofits completed a summer grant project aimed at creating safe spaces for communities across west central Illinois and northeast Missouri, WGEM reports. The Community Foundation Serving West Central Illinois & Northeast Missouri awarded more than $370,000 in grants. Recipients included the Quincy Community Theatre, the Quincy Children’s Museum, and the Quincy Juneteenth organization.

Massachusetts
On August 18, the Cambridge Community Foundation announced scholarships in support of 18 summer programs. The Cambridge WINS sponsorships assisted more than 2,500 young people across the city, engaging them in basketball, baseball, swimming, football, orienteering, tennis, and circus arts. Since 2022, Cambridge WINS has awarded more than $62,000 in scholarships to 44 organizations and coaches.

New York
On August 21, the Central New York Community Foundation announced that the Cortland Area Chamber of Commerce was awarded a $75,000 grant that will support affordable child care access in Cortland County. The funding will be used to help the chamber hire a project professional who will lead planning, feasibility, and fundraising to transform the former Parker Elementary School into an Early Childhood Education Center and community hub. The Center will initially serve about 100 children, with capacity to expand to 150.

The gift is part of a broader $50 million philanthropic campaign that includes $39 million for capital needs and $11 million for programmatic support for the building. Together with a $311 commitment from the Tennessee General Assembly, private support will help fund the $361 million initiative, including the $350 million building to be constructed on the Memphis campus of UT Health Sciences.

As the first true home for the largest of UT Health Sciences’ six colleges, the seven-story, more than 300,000-square-foot facility will bring together cross-disciplinary training, advanced technology, research, and collaborative learning environments under one roof. Anchoring the Memphis medical district, the building will expand the university’s capacity to prepare physicians, physician assistants, and other healthcare professionals to meet growing workforce demands across Tennessee, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

“During its first five years, the facility is expected to train 1,450 new physicians and physician assistants, helping address projected provider shortages across the state,” said the college’s executive dean, Michael Hocker. “As the academic cornerstone for the College of Medicine, this building will serve as the foundational training ground for all medical students. Regardless of where they ultimately complete their education in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Nashville, or Memphis, the fundamental building blocks of their medical education will begin in Memphis, making this facility imperative to UT Health Sciences’ statewide educational delivery model and its mission to prepare the next generation of physicians for Tennessee.”

NJ Spotlight Moves to Montclair State University
On August 7, NJ PBS announced that Montclair State University will acquire the assets of NJ Spotlight, the statewide news organization that has reported on New Jersey policy and government since 2010, from the WNET Group. NJ Spotlight’s assets will be integrated with NJ PBS, which is operated by Montclair within its College of Communication and Media.
Montclair became the programming and management operator of NJ PBS, which includes New Jersey’s four public television stations, on July 1. NJ PBS has retained John Mooney, NJ Spotlight’s founding editor, to lead the transition and support the growth of the news team.

Pew Trusts Promotes Two Leaders as New Team Takes Shape
On August 14, Pew Charitable Trusts announced the promotions of two experienced leaders whose work has helped advance the organization’s mission and strengthen its impact. Heather Hulen was promoted to vice president, executive office, and chief of staff. Since joining Pew in 2013 as a manager, Hulen has held several leadership positions, including, most recently, senior director and chief of staff. Guinnevere (Winnie) Roberts was promoted to vice president, environment, effective August 1.
Roberts joined Pew in 2017 and has played an instrumental role in the organization’s ocean conservation projects, the safer chemicals project—which aims to reduce Americans’ exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals—and in crosscutting functions such as environmental science and sustainable conservation finance. Earlier this summer, the funder named William Foster as its next president and CEO, effective March 1, 2027.

Maryland
On August 10, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore announced grants to three Lower Shore nonprofits through its Black Excellence Community Fund as part of Black Philanthropy Month. The recipients include Celebrez la Femme, Freetown Education Research and Cultural Center of Snow Hill, and the Harriet Tubman Center for Cultural and Educational Advancement. Grants of $750 each will benefit Black-led local nonprofits that impact the quality of life for the local community.

New York
On August 12, the New York Community Trust and N.Y. State Attorney General Letitia James announced $505,000 in grants to 28 nonprofits advancing community-led pollinator conservation efforts—including to restore native habitat, expand environmental education, and engage residents in stewardship—in historically underserved communities across the state. The grants are the final allocation from the New York Pollinator Conservation Fund, which James established in 2023 using monies from a $6.9 million settlement with Bayer CropScience LP and Monsanto for allegedly misleading the public about the safety of certain Roundup® consumer weedkillers, which can be toxic to pollinator species like bees and butterflies.

Oklahoma
On August 4, the Oklahoma City Community Foundation announced that its Bridge OKC Fund awarded nearly $800,000 in support of three organizations working to help people access housing, mental health care and other solutions that lead to lasting stability. The recipients include Key to Home Partnership, Homeless Alliance, and Mental Health Association Oklahoma. One additional grant will be made in the future, bringing the total funds invested to more than $1 million.

Pennsylvania
On August 5, the Pittsburgh Foundation announced that its #ONEDAY Critical Needs Alert raised $1.65 million in gifts from more than 4,100 donors for nearly 400 nonprofits in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. The Pittsburgh Foundation and the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County provided a $550,000 incentive pool, of which $50,000 was earmarked for Westmoreland County groups. Donations from $25 to $1,000 triggered funding from the pool.

Idaho
On July 27, the Idaho Community Foundation announced grants totaling more than $94,000 in support of organizations in Bonner County and nearly $50,000 to organizations in the southern region of the state. Funding to Bonner County groups were awarded through the foundation’s Endowment Fund for Human Rights and Fund for Arts Enhancement. In southeastern Idaho, grants were awarded through F.M., Anne G., and Beverly B. Bistline Foundation.

Minnesota
On July 29, the Minneapolis Foundation announced grants totaling $2.4 million to 19 organizations working to expand economic mobility across the Twin Cities. Recipients include the African Career Education and Resources ($100,000), First Children’s Finances ($120,000), Luke Street Council ($150,000), and Redesign ($150,000).

Ohio
On August 5, the Marietta Community Foundation announced its second cohort of 25 Under 25 honorees, a recognition program created to identify and encourage young people who are making a difference in their schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities. Ranging in age from 12 to 23, the Class of ‘26 represented communities from nearly every corner of the county and included students, entrepreneurs, volunteers, first responders, caregivers, coaches, nonprofit leaders, and young professionals.

Pennsylvania
On July 27, the Philadelphia Foundation and Forman Arts Initiative (FAI) announced the recipients of Art Works: Kensington 250 Microgrants, the newest phase of the two organizations’ long-running Art Works partnership. Fifteen artists and collaborative groups working in the Kensington neighborhood and surrounding ZIP codes will receive microgrants to present or perform new or existing work in the community this summer. Founded in 2021 by FAI and the foundation, Art Works is a joint grant program designed to support Philadelphia arts and cultural organizations and artists working in partnership with people of color and other underserved communities.

With $3.5 million from the Prudential Foundation and $175,000 from the Victoria Foundation, the Resiliency and Capital Access Initiative will help 10 CDCs improve their cash flow management, create adaptable business models, and build economic resilience through strategic reserves and more varied funding sources. By participating in the initiative, CDCs will be able to enhance their financial sustainability so they can build economic security, community wealth, and prosperity for Newark residents.

Newark’s CDCs improve the city’s economy while supporting efforts that impact daily quality of life in neighborhoods across the city, by strengthening affordable housing, early childhood education, food access, financial literacy, workforce development, and so much more. The initial cohort of this effort includes Clinton Hill Community Action, FOCUS Hispanic Center for Community Development, Ironbound Community Corporation, La Casa de Don Pedro, Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, New Community Corporation, South Ward Promise Neighborhood (BRICK), Unified Vailsburg Service Organization, United Community Corporation, and Urban League of Essex County.

The attack, which reportedly occurred overnight Wednesday into Thursday, tapped the data of approximately 31,000 people. The government stated there were no indications that any data was altered or deleted, and measures were taken to secure the data after the attack was discovered Thursday morning; the system was taken offline.

Connecticut

On July 30, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven announced grants totaling more than $3 million in unrestricted operating grants to organizations across the region. The funding includes more than $1.4 million in first-year grants to 55 organizations and $1.63 million in second- and third-year commitments. Recipients include Abilities Without Boundaries ($40,000), Bridges Healthcare ($95,000), New Haven Reads ($95,000), and Women and Family Life Center ($65,000).

Massachusetts

On July 29, the Boston Foundation announced grants totaling $330,000 in support of 21 arts organizations in greater Boston. Awarded through its Free for All Endowment Fund, the grants will boost access to music and other cultural programming in the region. The funding total represents the largest allocation from the fund since its inception in 2016. Recipients include the Afghanistan Freeharmonic Orchestra, Castle of Our Skins, City Strings United, and Shelter Music Boston.

Minnesota

On July 29, the Central Minnesota Community Foundation (CMCF) awarded $190,000 to 16 organizations through three competitive grant rounds, supporting initiatives that strengthen housing stability, expand access to the arts, and improve opportunities for youth across central Minnesota. Recipients include ServeMinnesota ($20,000), St. Cloud Downtown Alliance ($5,100), 180 Degrees ($7,500), and Great River Children’s Museum ($10,000).

New Jersey

On July 13, the Community Foundation of New Jersey (CFNJ) announced $142,000 in grants to assist and strengthen 15 nonprofits through the recently created Morris County Nonprofit Capacity Fund. The initiative was directly supported by local foundations, including CFNJ, the F.M. Kirby Foundation, and the Mimi Washington Starrett Foundation, with additional support from a reserved fund of the Morris County Funders Group. Recipients include the Interfaith Food Pantry, Jersey Battered Women’s Services, Milestone House, and the Roots and Wings Foundation.

Ohio

In late July, the Marion Community Foundation announced that 88 designated endowment funds awarded more than $665,000 to 56 nonprofit organizations during fiscal year 2026, supporting a wide range of community needs including education, the arts, economic development, faith-based organizations, health and wellness, and basic needs. Recipients include the Marion Area Humane Society, Marion Family YMCA, Tri-Rivers Career Center, and Marion Senior Citizens Association.

To help families overcome economic uncertainty during these challenging times, CPI will work to bring together leaders across ideological lines to find practical, effective solutions that improve everyday life for millions of Americans. The foundation’s first new initiative in more than a decade, CPI will focus on children’s well-being, family economic security, women and children’s health, and democracy and civil resilience.

At the staff level, CPI will be led by CEO Zayn Siddique, a policy leader with deep experience in turning ambitious ideas for children and families into real results. Jennifer Klein, former Assistant to the President and the Director of the White House Gender Policy Council, will serve as board chair. Florida

On July 15, the Community Foundation of Sarasota County announced a $20,000 Community Impact grant to the CreArte Latino Cultural Center to expand opportunities for hundreds of children, parents, and caregivers across Sarasota and Manatee counties. The grant, which was made possible by the Community Foundation’s Zella I. and Junius F. Allen Fund and Leslie and Margaret Weller Fund, supports “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges: Performing Arts & Education for Community Connection,” a bilingual initiative designed to strengthen family bonds, celebrate cultural identity, and foster a deeper sense of belonging through the arts.

On July 23, the Quad Cities Community Foundation announced grants totaling more than $145,000 in support of nine organizations in the region. Awarded through the Nonprofit Capacity Building Grants program, the funding includes $20,000 to STEAM on Wheels, $11,000 to Junior Theatre Inc.; $20,000 to SAL Family and Community Services.

North Dakota

On July 24, the Red River Regional Council announced that community leaders from across northeast North Dakota are working to establish the Red River Rural Communities Foundation, which will work to help donors, communities, and local organizations create lasting impact through permanent endowments and community-based philanthropy in Walsh, Pembina, Nelson,

and Grand Forks counties. The foundation is being developed through a partnership that includes Grafton Parks & Recreation, the Red River Regional Council, and the Grafton Blue Line Club, with additional organizations, civic groups, and communities expected to participate as the initiative grows.

Tennessee

On July 20, the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee announced that it was partnering with the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County to launch the Nashville Catalyst Fund, which will provide fast, flexible financing for affordable housing development, especially in neighborhoods where rising land costs and limited predevelopment funding have slowed progress. The model will enable two Madison apartment communities with a combined 138 units to remain permanently affordable for working families.
