chasing harder workouts and start focusing on better movement.

Getting better at Pilates isn’t necessarily about doing the most advanced exercise in the room.

It’s about becoming more controlled, more connected, and more confident in your movement.

Here are a few things that can actually help you improve.

1. Stop rushing.

I know… the slower you go, the harder it can feel. It’s tempting to rush through an exercise just to get to the next one. But try slowing everything down.

Can you control the way your leg lowers?

Can you hold your position for one more second?

Can you move without using momentum?

That’s where the work happens.

Control > speed.

2. Master the basics.

You don’t have to constantly be doing the hardest variation. Your fundamentals matter.

Breathing.

Core connection.

Alignment.

Posture.

Control.

If you can master the basics, you’ll have a much stronger foundation when you start progressing into more challenging movements. Sometimes going back to the basics is actually how you move forward.

3. Actually listen to the cues.

Don’t just copy what the instructor is doing. Listen to why they’re asking you to move a certain way. If I say, “Keep your ribs connected,” don’t just hear the words. Think about what that actually feels like in your body. If I say, “Reach through your heel,” notice what changes when you do.

The goal is to eventually understand your body well enough that you don’t need someone telling you exactly what to feel.

4. Repeat movements.

You don’t need a completely different workout every single time you get on your mat. Repeating movements is actually one of the best ways to recognize progress. The first time you try something, you’re figuring out the movement. The fifth time, you might notice your alignment. The tenth time, you might finally feel the muscle working the way it’s supposed to.

Familiarity creates control.

And control creates progress.

5. Stop comparing your body to someone else’s.

This one is easier said than done.

You might be in class next to someone who can extend their legs farther, hold a position longer, or do a variation that you’re not ready for yet. That doesn’t mean they’re “better” at Pilates. Your flexibility, strength, anatomy, and experience are different. Your goal isn’t to make your body move exactly like someone else’s.

Your goal is to make your own movement better.

6. Learn to modify.

A modification isn’t the “easy” version. It’s the version that allows you to perform the movement with control and intention.

Maybe you need to bend your knees.

Maybe you need a smaller range of motion.

Maybe you need to put your hands down for support.

That’s not failing.

That’s listening to your body.

And honestly, knowing when to modify is a sign that you’re becoming a more experienced mover.

7. Be consistent.

You don’t need to do Pilates for an hour every single day.

You don’t need to destroy your core five days a week.

You just need to keep showing up. Ten intentional minutes is still movement. A 20-minute flow counts. A full class counts. Even a day where you slow down and focus on mobility counts. Consistency over time will always matter more than one perfect workout.

8. Don’t be afraid to stay with something that feels hard.

Sometimes we want to immediately move on when an exercise feels uncomfortable or challenging.

But instead of thinking:

“I can’t do this.”

Try:

“I’m still learning this.”

There is a huge difference.

You don’t have to master everything immediately. Give yourself time to build the strength and coordination.

And remember: progress doesn’t always look like a harder exercise 🤍

Maybe your progress is holding a plank longer.

Maybe you finally understand how to engage your core.

Maybe you’re able to keep your hips stable.

Maybe you don’t have to think about your alignment anymore because it has become natural.

Maybe you’re breathing through movements that used to make you want to quit.

That’s progress.

Pilates is a practice.

You’re not supposed to master everything overnight.

So the next time you get on your mat, don’t worry about doing the hardest variation.

Focus on moving a little better than you did yesterday.

More control.

More awareness.

More confidence.

That’s how you actually get better at Pilates. 🪩🤍

See you on the mat,

Reagan

Why Your Pilates Practice Isn’t About How You Look 🤍

Let’s talk about something I think gets lost in Pilates sometimes.

pilates by reagan

Let’s talk about something I think gets lost in Pilates sometimes.

Your Pilates practice isn’t just about changing how your body looks.

And I know that’s a little ironic coming from someone who loves Pilates for the physical results too.

Yes, Pilates can make you feel stronger.
Yes, you might notice changes in your body.
Yes, you might feel more toned and co…
