This study was not initiated in isolation. It wasn’t born out of rebellion or irritation. It came from a slow, steady pressure that kept showing up in conversations I didn’t expect.

Progressive academics.
Friends I cared about.
Online testimonies of people “deconstructing” their faith.

Different voices, different stories, yet the same name kept surfacing.

Paul.

Not Jesus.
Not Moses.
Not the prophets.
Paul.

I kept hearing the same refrains

“Paul contradicts Jesus.”
“Paul invented Christianity.”
“Paul was shaped by his culture.”
“Paul shouldn’t be treated as authoritative.”

And I found myself caught between two impulses.

On one hand, I wanted to provide a strong, clear rebuttal because Scripture is supposed to be God‑breathed1, right? On the other hand, I would rather not dismiss people I loved. I wanted to understand the thought process behind their doubts, not just the conclusions.

There was a tension in me, a nagging one. Not the tension of unbelief, but the tension of intellectual and spiritual honesty.

I didn’t want to defend something I hadn’t examined.
I didn’t want to repeat answers I inherited without wrestling.
I didn’t want to quote verses like weapons while ignoring the questions underneath.

So I started listening.

My initial questions

Why Paul?
Why does he become the flash point?
Why does modern deconstruction orbit his letters?
Why do people who once loved Scripture suddenly treat him like a liability?

Some modern skeptics of Paul also claim his intentions in his letters were only meant for ancient audiences and hold a different kind of relevancy for today’s Christians. The argument, while varied, essentially goes something like this:

Paul was addressing specific problems in specific churches, so his words cannot carry universal authority. Once you adopt that assumption, Paul becomes optional. His letters become historical artifacts rather than living Scripture. And for many modern readers, that makes Paul feel safe to dismiss.

These questions only deepened as my research did.

To set the stage for our theme, here is a quote from a famous ‘Christian Athiest’ and critic of both Paul and Jesus, Bart Ehrman;2

Ehrman goes to great lengths to persuade his readers that Paul and Jesus stand on opposite sides of a theological chasm. In his mind, the separation is not subtle or implied, rather explicit. And one of his core claims is that Paul “doesn’t talk about Jesus’ miracles,” as if Paul’s silence on narrative details proves theological discontinuity.

The claim falls apart pretty quickly once you actually listen to Paul’s own testimony. And honestly, that’s something I had to remind myself to do, to slow down and let Paul speak for himself. He wasn’t vague or timid about his calling. He was a sharp, persuasive writer who left us plenty to work with when it comes to understanding what God assigned him to do. And coming from a man who once hunted Christians, there’s a certain intensity in the way he talks. You can almost feel the weight of his past in the urgency of his mission.

Paul received direct divine intervention. In Act 22:6-11, Paul recounts the risen Christ appearing to him personally, ultimately ending his career of persecution and beginning his God-ordained ministry.

But in Galatians 1:11-19, he states that the gospel he preaches is “not from man… After this encounter (as mentioned in Acts), Paul spent three years in formation before meeting the Jerusalem apostles, stating that the gospel he preaches is “not from man… but through a revelation of Jesus Christ.” Paul giving his testimony yet again to the Galatian believers, saying:

“I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and stayed with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother. (What I am writing to you is before God: I do not lie.)” - Galatians 1:11-20 ESV

Paul may not mention Jesus’ narrative miracles, like healings, exorcisms, or parables, because his letters had a different purpose. Paul had no reason for writing biographies to communities that already knew the Jesus traditions.

What he does emphasize, repeatedly and emphatically, is the central miracle of the entire Christian faith: the Resurrection.

Erhman takes Paul’s silence on Jesus’ earthly ministry and uses it as a foundation for a much larger theological claim.

The irony is Bart’s faith perspective is not a new one!

Ehrman’s reconstruction of Paul’s Christology resembles what early church fathers later condemned as “Arianism.” He argues that Paul (while sincere) saw Jesus as a pre-exsistent heavenly being who became incarnate and was then exalted to an even higher divine status.3 While Ehrman does not use the term “Arianism” that I can find, his description aligns closely with the subordinationist Christologies rejected at Nicaea.4

Now here’s the pattern

There’s a tug of war within the Paul skeptics on how exactly to represent his writings. Because his letters confront our cultural instincts, challenge our ethical assumptions, and refuse to let us reshape Jesus into a purely modern figure, they (the skeptics) tug at loose strings or outright reject. Acedemics question his Christology, progressives question his ethics, skeptics question his authority, and many readers simply find his writings difficult. Paul is not the problem, however; Paul exposes the problem. That is why he becomes the flashpoint of modern deconstruction.

Let’s be honest with each other. Paul ain’t always easy reading. Peter points this out, discussing both Paul’s authority and misplaced controversy, says in 2 Peter 3:15–16 (KJV);

15 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Before we can understand Paul, we have to understand why he provokes such strong reactions in the first place.

That is where we go next. In the next Post, we’ll look at the cultural, emotional, and ethical objections that make Paul feel “unsafe” to some modern readers, and the methods they use to protect themselves.

I never grew up in a family that valued holidays or celebrations, tawdry or sacrosanct alike. As such, it never truly occurred to me what I felt I ultimately missed out on until recent years.

Now don't get me wrong; we had dinner on birthdays, Easter, maybe a BBQ on certain days, and even put up a tree when we were young, but never discussed why or gave any attention to the season or meaning. So that instilled a deep sense of "It's what people feel they should do." For me, it became a sense of normalcy without emotional or cultural adoption. So when I flew the nest and a birthday would rear its head, I never made expectations of celebrations or acknowledgements. If I DID get a happy birthday, I merely replied, "Thank you." But I never insisted for myself and hoped, in return, the expectation would never be given back to me.

A few years ago, while on the journey of my walk with Christ, I was confronted with this dilemma as I was visiting passages about the resurrection, and 'tis the season, as it were, as Easter, or Resurrection Sunday was rapidly approaching. Why was this a dilemma? Because intellectually I understood the significance of Jesus' death on the cross, burial in the tomb, and resurrection on the third day. I knew it was a glorious fact and had genuine gratitude and desire to grow in the Lord. After all, I was still asking questions. Yet I was still reeling over something; at the time, I didn't understand where it stemmed from.

So I turned to prayer and supplication, as He has so patiently taught me to do over the years when my own wisdom fails me.

This might sound odd, but let me explain myself.

I knew I had gratitude and believed in everything I knew I had! However, I felt lack within my heart. Where was my excitement and joy? 1

I didn’t have a full and well-rounded emotional connection that I believed was “normal.” It’s easy to point at some of the principal causes now. My family didn’t hold one day sacred over another. Every day was alike. While they were not believers, when I came to faith, a biblical justification for this was easily in tow and had a certain amount of merit to it. 2 The caveat being it’s not that one day is more special and celebrated, but every day we should revel in the gift Christ has given us! After all, we shouldn’t take a single breath God gives us for granted.

So where does that leave us?

I was missing an emotional dimension of understanding, and since pointing this out in my life, it has cascaded dominos into every other facet of my life. I was never given the opportunity to celebrate anything in a healthy way. I was taught, "What is there to celebrate?" I was taught, “It’s easier to criticize." But Christ saw something different in me that He wanted me to confront with Him. Lies He wanted exposed and a new life to be fully realized. He essentially was saying, "You are my workmanship, and this is the next step.” 3

Why am I saying all this?

I could have written about my experiences with the Sabbath, finished the story about Easter, or any number of Christian ‘Holy Days’, I’ve consciously worked on appreciating.

But let’s talk about July 4th, Independence Day.

At face value, you see the memes and jokes of hyped Americanism. (Guns, explosions, and beef) and all together unbridled excess. I’ll be the first to admit, that’s hilarious to me. But in my heart, it’s not truly meaningful to me other than an expression of the current zeitgeist.

Is this truly what makes America great?

If I put on my Christian thinking cap, perhaps each trope represents the end results of God's blessings, for better (utilized for good and quality of life and innovation) or worse (utilized for our own pride and unjust gain). I kind of shelved the whole concept just because I knew while it was a worthwhile study, if I came to a negative conclusion, that would be quite alienating between my peers and I. So altogether not worth it until I felt confronted by it.

That brings us to today. A sermon I attended discussed some framework that was worth taking another look at.

How America’s founding wasn’t merely a political rebellion but shaped by conviction. Although not all were Christian virtues, as many were ‘enlightened’ thinkers, they nevertheless were greatly considerate thinkers on what the line is between liberty and righteousness. Was their cause just? Was it right? Was this cause a God-given responsibility?

Faith, conscience, and moral responsibility.

Does that sound like the conviction a rabble of idolaters would have? 4

Compare it to today; do we have the same conviction to lay up our loyalty to our neighbors, our wealth put at risk, and even our very lives on notice?

I think we all are guilty of saying “That’s someone else’s problem.”

Today we've become idolaters gloating in the bloated smoke plume of a great nation.

The founding fathers clearly didn’t get that memo. In truth, the American fathers instead mostly quoted Moses (amongst other documents both within and without the Bible).

This passage of Leviticus was in remembrance of the Jubilee — the fiftieth year — a national, year‑long rest in which all possessions, lands, and even people were returned to their original heritage and status in society. 6

No Israelite could remain permanently enslaved. Debts were canceled. Families were reunited. “Unto all the inhabitants thereof” meant universal restoration. If a family fell into poverty and had to sell their land, Jubilee allowed them to return to the inheritance God assigned them in Joshua 13–21.7 Jubilee was God’s way of saying: “Freedom is not merely release—it is restoration.” In the New Testament, Jesus is the true and final Jubilee, restoring the original heritage of people in God. What Joshua repaired in a physical way, Christ restores in a spiritual way: He sets us free from the law of sin and death, 8 establishes the freedom for which we were made, and grants the promised inheritance to all who believe. 9

It is no accident that our forefathers chose this exact verse “Leviticus 25:10” to engrave on the Liberty Bell.

They saw liberty as more than political freedom; it was a moral renewal, a return to the rightful order, dignity, and God-given identity. Liberty, the Founders thought, was something deeper than politics and haggling over "rights" and "ego." They believed in a moral state to which people were restored to what God originally intended.

George Washington echoed this vision when he wrote that America’s foundation was laid “in an epoch when… the pure and benign light of revelation had had ameliorating influence on mankind.” 10 Washington, of course, waxing poetic of the Bible having said positive influence.

Washington himself quoted Micah 4:3–4 when addressing the Hebrew Congregation at Newport — a vision of peace, restoration, and divine order:11

Jubilee language of restoration, peace, security and freedom based on the sort of righteousness only given by that which can give it. JESUS.

There is a monumental amount of reading material on this subject so I had to be scrutinizing in what I shared. Here are a few more quotes from the Founders that understood that liberty without virtue collapses.

John Adams wrote: 12

“The only foundation of a free Constitution is pure virtue.”

Benjamin Franklin declared:13

“Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom.”

James Madison warned:14

“To suppose that any form of government will secure liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people is a chimerical idea.”

The Great Awakening: America’s Spiritual Restoration

One final point… Not long before the Declaration was signed, America experienced a spiritual Jubilee of its own. Dubbed “The Great Awakening.” 15

Johnathan Edwards preached that true freedom begins with the heart awakened to God’s grace. George Whitefield proclaimed that all people, regardless of class, stood equal before God and needed the “new birth.” 16

This revival ultimately democratized faith, broke down social hierarchies, and taught colonists that no earthly authority could stand between a person and God.

It was a revivification of spirit! You might say, a Jubilee of the soul. teaching the colonies that liberty was a God-given right.

Rediscovering Independence in Christ

And now, as America enters its 250th year, the symbolism is impossible to ignore.

Jubilee is the fiftieth year.
Five Jubilee cycles have passed.
We stand at a moment of national reflection.

But here is the truth I am rediscovering:

We should never idolize this country.

We should return to the roots that made liberty possible:
Repentance.
Belief.
Virtue.
Humility.
And the confession that our only salvation is Christ.**

America’s founding was shaped by Scripture, revival, natural law, and the moral vision of a God who restores what is broken. But America is not our savior. The Founders themselves knew this.

Washington spoke of Providence.
Adams spoke of virtue.
Franklin spoke of moral duty.
Madison spoke of conscience.
Jefferson spoke of the Creator.

All pointed beyond themselves.

True independence is not found in a nation but in a Savior.

True liberty is not political, but spiritual.
True Jubilee is Christ Himself.

And as I reclaim my own independence, emotionally, spiritually, personally, I'm learning that celebration is not fireworks or rituals. Celebration is gratitude for the One who restores all things.

The Word of God is crystal clear in the instruction of wisdom. From Genesis to Revelation, the Word of God discusses at length what wisdom is, how wisdom works, why wisdom matters, and what wisdom produces.

Proverbs alone mentions wisdom 41 times.1 It’s so frequently mentioned and described in so much detail that Solomon often gives Wisdom a voice and character with desires and feelings. This happens often enough that one might say Wisdom is personified! Wisdom is given an entire personality that you could know intimately through the author’s writings. A more contemporary author and pastor, John Bevere, wrote extensively on the subject of Wisdom and maintaining a Holy Fear, both from his lived experiences and examples of individuals he ministered to. John wrote, “Wisdom is the ability to see things the way God sees them.” In a single phrase, he captures the essence of what true wisdom is reaching toward.

But that definition still leaves us asking deeper questions: How does Wisdom work? Why does it matter? What is it trying to produce in us?

Wisdom, often (although not always) referred to as “she,” is often described with a diligence that labors away, laying the pathway for right living so that others might follow.2 Confirming this sentiment in the New Testament, God always leaves the doorway to wisdom wide open for the humble willing to follow.3

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5 (KJV)

But how does Wisdom do her work? Consider how seriously Wisdom reacts when others don’t heed her words to follow her path she diligently and meticulously established for them. She goes to the most public places and wails and cries!

Wisdom does its crying out in the streets, meaning she’s not trying to make it difficult to find. It’s not occult.

Yet, as we observe even today, do all seek after wisdom? Not nearly enough, as such, she begs, rebukes, and exhorts anyone and everyone that would have ears to hear and a heart trembling with fear enough to hearken.4

Doth not wisdom cry? And understanding put forth her voice? She standeth in the top of high places, By the way in the places of the paths. She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city. At the coming in at the doors. Unto you, O men, I call; And my voice is to the sons of man. — Proverbs 8:1-4 (KJV)

Wisdom is not unstable. She is not frantic, nor is she “crazy.” She is of sound mind, deliberate, steady, and purposeful.5 Her goal is simple: to find those who love instruction. And at the risk of appearing foolish to the world, she behaves contrary to what the world calls “wise,” because she is working for the benefit of the few who would actually listen.6

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: And happy is everyone that retaineth her. The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; By understanding hath He established the heavens. — Proverbs 3:17-19 (KJV)

Hopefully everyone reading already senses the gravity of what Wisdom cries so publicly for. She doesn’t present herself in the center of town, just wanting to offer insight or get attention selfishly, but rather does so desperately, pleading for our genuine heart transformation. And that promised change only occurs when we experience Holy Fear. With all humility, reverence, and repentance of heart, we are given the ability to change our true desires to those that align with God’s desires.7 Once again, Pastor John Bevere gives some context from his book The Awe of God.

The prophets that ministered before the LORD, both in spirit and in body, foretold of this transformation. Jeremiah spoke of a day when God would “write His law upon our hearts,” and Ezekiel declared that God Himself would give us “a new heart and a new spirit,” one that removed the stony heart and replaced it with one that can feel, tremble, and obey.8 This is what Wisdom is pleading for: a heart capable of Holy Fear.

Holy Fear is not ordinary fear.

It is the joyful trembling that comes when a heart finally perceives the weight, beauty, and holiness of God. When His presence is so real that even your knees cannot hold you up, yet your soul is filled with delight.

And the word “holy” matters here (as that gives us understanding and perspective): this is fear reserved for the One who alone is worthy of it, the One who has the power to destroy both body and soul.9 Yet in the meekness of Jesus, that terrible power is restrained from crushing us, yielding instead to preserve us, cleanse us, and draw us near. Therefore, the evidence of this kind of fear practically profits us specific evidence;

1. Hating what God calls evil—beyond just avoiding sin, you inwardly reject it.
   "The fear of the LORD is to hate evil.” (Proverbs 8:13) Turning away from sin in every form — in thought, word, motive, and action.
   “By the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” (Proverbs 16:6)

2. Speaking truth without deceit—refusing lies, manipulation, exaggeration, or flattery.
   “Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.” (Psalm 34:13)

3. Avoiding even the appearance of wrongdoing—loving what is pure and refusing what is questionable.
   “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22)

4. Living with inward–outward integrity—your private thoughts and motives match your public behavior.
   “The integrity of the upright shall guide them.” (Proverbs 11:3)

5. Walking in humility before God and people—rejecting pride and self‑exaltation.
   “Before honour is humility.” (Proverbs 15:33)

6. Giving God the worship He deserves—praise, adoration, thanksgiving, and reverence.
   “Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name.” (Psalm 29:2)

7. Honoring God with what belongs to Him — your obedience, your resources, your allegiance, your repentance.
   “Honour the LORD with thy substance.” (Proverbs 3:9)

8. Trembling at God’s Word—receiving His commands with eagerness, not reluctance.
   "To this man will I look… that trembleth at my word.” (Isaiah 66:2)

9. Obeying God no matter the cost — choosing His will over comfort, reputation, or convenience.
   “We ought to obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29)

   “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him.” (Job 13:15)

10. Refusing to complain or grumble — trusting God’s sovereignty instead of resenting His providence.
    “Do all things without murmurings and disputings.” (Philippians 2:14)

11. Honoring God‑given authority—not in blind submission, but in reverence for the One who appoints all authority.
    “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers.” (Romans 13:1)

Jesus Christ: The Wisdom of God

Scripture says plainly:

“Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”
(1 Corinthians 1:24)

Jesus is not merely a teacher of wisdom. He is Wisdom Himself.
He is the One who bridges the infinite gap between a holy God and sinful humanity.
He is the One who makes the unknowable God known.
He is the One who writes the law on our hearts by His Spirit.
He is the One who enables us to fear God rightly and understand Him truly.

Without Jesus before us, behind us, above us, below us, and beside us, we could never approach the Father—not in this life nor the next.10

Only through Christ can we behold a holy God without being consumed.
Only through Christ can we receive a new heart capable of Holy Fear.
Only through Christ can we walk in wisdom.

The Final Call

So put your trust in Him. Fear the only One worthy of being feared. Let His holiness define your understanding. Let His presence shape your desires. Let His wisdom govern your steps.

It is not only righteous to do so; it is the only logical response to the God who is holy, the Christ who is Wisdom, and the Spirit who gives life.

Ponder:

1. Where have I stopped treating God as holy?

2. What would it look like for me to live today with the awareness that God alone is worthy of fear?

3. What sin do I still tolerate instead of hate?

4. Do I tremble at God’s Word, or do I negotiate with it? What does my response reveal about my fear of the Lord?

5. What step of obedience is God asking of me right now?

Prayer:

Holy God, teach my heart to fear You rightly. Let Your holiness correct my vision, humble my pride, and shape my desires. Give me a heart that trembles at Your Word and delights in Your ways. Remove anything in me that resists Your voice or clings to sin. Allow me to receive understanding by knowledge of the Holy, which purifies me and reveals to me my faults as I come face to face. Give me ears to hear, eyes to see, and a heart soft enough to receive understanding. I pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A sobering message to those with ears to hear.

This is not merely a rebuke to ancient Israel, rather a warning to every generation. Consider this a strong admonition and reproof to the modern church and its spiritual practices. God will never rest on His laurels regarding the purification of His children. (1 Pet 4:17, Mat 11:15) But if there is any false devotion in us, any attempt to approach God on our own terms, we repeat the error of Cain. (Gen 4:3-5).

But here is the problem:

We often try to soothe spiritual emptiness with religious activity. We substitute works for repentance, noise for obedience, and routine for relationship.

Therefore, the words of A.W. Tozer strikes at the very crux of Amos’s warning.

“We have been trying to apply machine‑age methods to our relations with God. We read our chapter, have our short devotions and rush away, hoping to make up for our deep inward bankruptcy by attending another gospel meeting or listening to another thrilling story told by a religious adventurer lately returned from afar. The tragic results of this spirit are all about us.” - A.W. Tozer Author of The Pursuit of God

Our God is so loving He will never allow worship without true repentance for very long without warning. (Rev 3:19) And if we become lackadaisical in our humble heeding of His warnings, we risk the painful humbling only an all-powerful Father in Heaven could offer. (Heb 12:6)

He will send us into captivity if it means His Holy justice is served which takes precedence every single time over any liturgy or following of religious ceremony.

You may go to church, take communion, bring dishes to the community potluck, and tithe faithfully. Yet if you have an area of your life yet to be surrendered to God you are at risk for a humbling.

Your drunkenness is at risk to addiction or embarrassment. Your gambling is at risk for financial hardship, and persistent obsession. Your fornication is at risk of disease and heartbreak. Your meddling brings risk of loss of trust, position, and intimacy with once close friends and loved ones or at work.

With every stronghold you give the enemy even an inch, Satan will do everything in his power to take a mile especially if it meant your life. But he will settle for your testimony.

In the western world it is easy to be Christian with very little persecution, but never is it easy to be a Christian. To be one is perhaps one of the hardest things you’ll ever do yet proportionally to your walk is one of the most rewarding.

God’s warnings are never the end of the story. His discipline is not our destruction but a reprioritizing. Every call to repentance is a call to return to our first love. (Rev 2:4-5) So that we might be healed, restored, and revived.

“...Seek ye me and ye shall live.” - Amos 5:4b KJV

“...turn… to Me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth Him of the evil.” - Joel 2:12b-13 KJV

“Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up.” - Hosea 6:1 KJV

God’s judgement is always corrective, yet sharp as if it were a doctor’s corrective knife.

With surgical precision targeting not your weak spots, but your sin nature. Working to pick the lock to loosen your shackles you place on your own heart. Because where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. (2Cor 3:17; Jn 8:36)

Do not confuse genuine faith with religious pretense. When sacrifices and sacraments matter more to you than mercy and heart posture, the fragrance of your prayers loses its savor before God. (Rev 5:8; Ps 141:2)

So ask yourself honestly:

• Do I reserve my worship for God Alone, in reverence? (Heb 12:28; Mat 4:10; Jos 24:14)

• Do I keep my faith in Christ simple and sincere? (2 Cor 11:3; 1 Tim 1:5; Ja 1:27; Mk 10:15; Ecc 7:29)

If either answer is uncertain, let that uncertainty become an invitation. Return to the quiet, joyful simplicity you once knew, or that Christ still freely offers. He has not moved. He has not changed. As you still draw breath the door back to Him is open.

To help define simplicity, consider one of Scripture’s clearest examples:

LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. — Psalm 131:1-2 (KJV)

And if simplicity quests the soul, beauty awakens it. Scripture gives us a clear picture of the beauty found only in God Himself:

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. — Psalm 27:4 (KJV)

O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth. — Psalm 96:9 (KJV)

Ponder:

• Have you allowed your worship or ministry to be anything other than to bring Glory to God?

• How can I create healthy habits to allow for self examination of my motives during worship and service?

• Is my faith simple, or have I complicated what Jesus made clear?

• What would be exposed if God took away the show and left only the truth of my heart?

• Do I seek God’s presence—or the atmosphere of a service?

Prayer:

Father, I come before You with a willing and broken heart. Guard me from the pull of pomp, pretense, and performance. Lead me back to simple faith and genuine worship. Cleanse any unmerciful judgement for myself or others within me, and grant me discernment to recognize what is true and what is counterfeit. Let my worship bring glory to You alone, not to myself. Let Your Son be magnified in my life and in my voice—now and always. I pray in Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

1 Chronicles 1:1-3

1:1 -Adam, Seth, Enosh,

1:2 -Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared,

1:3 - Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech, Noah.

These names roughly translate to: “Man appointed subject to death, sorrowful from the presence of God one comes down dedicated dying he shall send to the poor comfort or rest.”

The first time hearing this, I was enveloped by a silent awe.

It’s hard to describe the kind of excitement that swells in the soul when you are discovering something for yourself within scriptures. Akin to having a personal secret with God.

I remember grade school, that youthful vigor of being entrusted with privileged information, the tender exchanges which, though trifling, are regarded by youthful hearts as treasures of significance. That feeling now serves as a mere prelude to the Holy importance and open exclusivity between God and myself.

I say “open exclusivity” because it isn’t for anyone to gate keep the Word of God. Yet what you discover in it through prayer, study, and pursuit does belong to you.

“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.” - Proverbs 25:2 KJV

I’ve taken this and other passages that carry similar weight as an unmitigated dispensation for how God desires us to chase Him. I believe He allows a sacred leeway in how we scrutinize and test His written word.

David models this in the Psalms, asking not in rebellion but in relationship:

“Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” - Psalms 10:1 KJV

And more famously, God Himself says:

“...prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing…” - Mal 3:10 KJV

Yet with these invitations comes a high standard. We are not free to twist or dilute. We must discern with diligence:

“...rightly dividing the word of truth.” - 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV

This, then, was the backdrop of concealment and effort of pursuit that I have fumbled through over the last several years of my pilgrimage with Christ. Ultimately I relented to the gentle insistence of the Spirit to approach 1 Chronicles. A book I had long avoided, once dismissed as dense and dry.

Yet what had appeared barren proved rich with fertile ground.

If God hides treasures for kings to uncover, a genealogy might have depth beneath its surface.

I opened the passage not with anticipation, but with obedience. Yet what I found was the gospel whispered through a cypher, an embedded message ancient readers scouring their manuscripts, would read a direct message along with the names of their ancestors. A pattern that we moderns now have the privilege to rediscover, having seen the end before the beginning.

We, the heirs of revelation (Rom 8:17; Col 1:26-27), see the ultimate result of sorrow, descent, dedication, death, and our comfort. His Spirit tucked away the threads of redemption in plain sight, waiting for the fulfillment in the new, enticing the mystery of old.

I was wholly aware of my lack of resolve, driven by selfish reasons.

1 Chronicles to me was one of those books I’ve long avoided—dense, dry, and seemingly endless in its genealogies. The who’s who of begats. I presumed, in my shortsightedness, that such labor wouldn’t see the spiritual returns on the investment of time and energy. As the scriptures say: “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” - Romans 1:22 (KJV)

But breaking into the texts for the first time, I was stirred by well respected contemporary theologians who’ve walked far longer in the Spirit than I. Hearing them speak of text hidden within the text, I knew I needed to do my due diligence. To trust, yes—but also to verify.

“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.” – 2 Corinthians 13:5 (KJV)

“Test all things; hold fast that which is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (KJV)

Of course, tracing meaning through genealogies isn’t without its challenges.

As I chased meaning in the genealogies, my skepticism surfaced. A small, stubborn voice flagged translation gaps, shaky etymologies, and the temptation to read more than the text gives. Running the risk of over-interpretation. Names like Kenan (often rendered Cainan in Luke), Methuselah, and Mahalalel resist tidy definitions because of semantic ambiguity. Lexicons diverge in their assertions, while the roots of these designations frequently overlap. Often the meanings aren’t handed down intact and scholars reconstruct them from context and phonetics. In many cases, the meanings are not preserved through direct linguistic transmission, rather reconstructed from contextual inference, and phonetic association.

A Few Outliers and how they’re reached

The name Methuselah מְתוּשֶׁלַח (Məthûšélaḥ) is a prime case of “semantic ambiguity”. The reading “his death shall bring” comes from joining compound roots muth (מוּת, “death”) and shalach (שָׁלַח, “to send/bring forth”). Rather than in a single, unambiguous lexical entry. In Hebrew, possession is often indicated by a suffix—such as the letter vav (ו) combined with a vowel, forming -וֹ (“his”)—which transforms muth into muto (“his death”) in compound constructions. Some lexicons simply list it as a proper name without assigning meaning, while others suggest alternate renderings like “man of the dart” or “man of sending”.¹

Kenan (קֵינָן) is transliterated as Cainan in Luke 3:37, illustrates how spellings shift between Hebrew and Greek. Some older etymological traditions also connect the name’s consonants to the Qayin root (קַיִן), historically associated with “spear” or “spear‑bearer,” though that connection is debated and looks more like a phonetic association than a secure lexical derivation. Lexically, its root may derive from qen (קֵן, “nest” or “fixed place”) or qanah (קָנָה, “to acquire”), leading to meanings such as “possession” or “established.” Strong’s Concordance (H7018) lists it simply as a proper name, without assigning a definitive meaning.²

Yet long before modern lexicons, Midrashic and Homiletic teachers drew meaning from sound and context Also Known As phonetic and contextual associations. An older tradition I found persuasive in addressing the afore-mentioned “rightly dividing the word of truth”. In that vein Kenan shares morphological ties with qinah (קִינָה), meaning “lamentation” or “dirge,” a term used in prophetic literature to signal sorrow; that overlap has led many preachers and scholars to read Kenan typologically within Genesis 5 as carrying tones of sorrow or lament, a point even Dr. Michael S. Heiser, who brought ancient thought into modern interpretation, found unconvincing in this instance—more on that below.⁵

While “sorrow” is not the strict lexical root, it reflects a legitimate interpretive tradition grounded in Hebrew phonetics.²

Mahalalel (מַהֲלַלְאֵל) combines mahalal (“praise”) and El (“God”), but some sources question whether this compound was ever used idiomatically in ancient Hebrew. The meaning “praise of God” is widely accepted, yet not universally attested in primary texts.³

It was essential to ground this pursuit in both tradition and linguistic rigor. The Midrashic method embraces textual tension not to distort, but to explore. Ancient rabbis treated names as vessels of theological insight, often drawing homiletic meaning from phonetic, numeric, and narrative associations. Modern scholars, too, recognize that if too rigid with the text we may inadvertently inoculate ourselves from the poetic intentions the Holy Spirit perhaps intended, thus direct translations may flatten nuance. Nonetheless semantic roots and morphological patterns remain stable enough in many cases to trace legitimate debate provided we present our conclusions with appropriate caution.

Strong Critic and Caution

In my internet sleuthing, I found some critics who cast doubt on several of the proposed translations, arguing that they rest on speculative reconstructions, over-reliance on root identifications, or disregard for Hebrew morphology and vocalization. These objections matter.⁵,⁴ Shared consonants do not guarantee identical meaning; the consonantal skeletons cannot replace proper vocalization and morphological analysis. Also, proposed etymologies should be tested against cognates and the semantic range of related Semitic languages. Genealogies are a distinct literary form, where reading them as if the author intended continuous theological sentences risks imposing a later homiletic frame on a list of proper names.

Generalized Practical Cautions

• Flag devotional readings as interpretive and provisional.

• For each asserted meaning, provide the lexical basis and at least one competing scholarly alternative.

• Prefer probabilistic language “plausible,” “possible,” “suggested”, rather than absolute claims.

• It is your responsibility to be aware of hermeneutics and what information the author is attempting to convince you of and how.

Final summation

I won’t pretend I’ve exhausted either side of this debate. Nor do I believe I now have anything close to what you might call “authoritative expertise” in conjugating biblical languages.

I believe there is value in both streams: Midrashic and Homiletic (I plan to break down hermeneutical frameworks at a later date) which can illumine Scripture and nurture true devotion, whilst philological critique protects against overreach and false certainty. Treat name‑sequence readings as interpretive options supported by evidence of varying weight, not as settled philology. Even if these names do not encode an intentional, airtight “gospel sentence,” the gospel itself does not depend on that discovery.

Our firm foundation and chief cornerstone remains Jesus Christ. If you are reading and do not yet know Him, I invite you to seek Him, examine the Scriptures prayerfully, and consider giving your life to Jesus. An honest, earnest pursuit of truth pursued with an open heart will lead you to Him.

Many martyrs have endured persecutions far beyond Job’s affliction, yet they laid hold of the promise: Peace.

We don’t have to look only as far back as Job to learn about suffering; modern witnesses like Richard Wurmbrand lived to tell us what faith and love look like under persecution. Faith, love, hope, joy, and even peace endured even as he watched friends murdered or worse.

“I have seen Christians in Communist prisons with fifty pounds of chains on their feet, tortured with red-hot iron pokers, in whose throats spoonfuls of salt had been forced, being kept afterward without water, starving, whipped, suffering from cold—and praying with fervor for the Communists. This is humanly inexplicable! It is the love of Christ, which was poured out in our hearts.” - Richard Wurmbrand Author of Tortured for Christ

The love of God shown by Christians in Romania—under Nazi occupation and later Communist rule—was not weakness but the cornerstone of their resistance. The Kingdom of God was engaged in spiritual warfare against the enemy.

Richard recounted the words of a brave disciple of Christ to a political officer who withheld life-saving medicine unless the man betrayed his brothers and sisters in Christ:

“I am a disciple of Christ, and He has taught us to love even our enemies. The men who betray us do us much harm, but I cannot reward evil with evil. I cannot give information even against them. I pity them. I pray for them. I don’t wish to have any connection with the Communists.”

That man soon died in his cell beside Richard, praising God with his last breath before going home to Jesus.

The walk of a believer is not without trials, but in every trial, there is an opportunity to deepen our trust in God. (1 Pt 4:12) Though He may slay us to the point of death, we still trust in Him who first breathed life in us. Would you believe this is the utmost calling in attaining spiritual maturity? This pain we experience is part of a glorious process—one that, if allowed, brings us into greater intimacy and knowledge of the LORD. Yet often amid these struggles, honest thoughts arise—thoughts which God is never afraid of.

The Psalmists and Prophets ask many questions & petitions;

“Help!, How Long? Why are you far away? Who else can I rely on? Why them?”

(Ps 8:3-4, Ps 13:1-5, Ps 12:1, Ps 10:1, Ps 73:25, Is 40:18, Jr 12:1)

If you are frustrated, confused, concerned, scared, or even angry with God, bring it to Him, for He says;

You can decide how your trust in God grows through trials.

To either treat God as if He is not faithful—floundering in our emotional neuroticism—or to treat Him as the God who, in every generation before us, has shown faithfulness by appearing at just the right time is a choice we face. Are we trying haplessly to seize control of the lives we have already committed to surrender as believers? Your spiritual maturity harnesses the essence of the thought: “I can choose how to respond to this trial”. So ask yourself how big is your God?

A commentator once wrote;

“Faith is the bird that sings for the dawn while it is still dark.”

This doesn’t mean that we will always have no evidence for our faith (He 11:1), but it doesn’t necessitate that we should need it either, when being challenged to grow up in faith. The hard but wonderful truth is that our present woes of today pale in comparison to the eternity spent in heaven with our savior Jesus. If we were to take our eyes off the main purpose and driving function of our faith for even a moment, you would have every right to accuse me of being yet another jabberwocky telling you what and how to believe and conduct yourself.

If you were to ignore every other exhortation but hold fast to trusting in Christ Alone for your development in faith, then this piece would have served you well. (Ac 4:12)

This intimacy—grown by loving discipline and hardship—moves us to our knees.

There, we bear fruit that is sweeter, grow branches that are firmer, and bloom flowers that stand out beautifully in a world full of fruitless gardens. We have a guiding light that feeds us, and a water which, once poured onto our parched roots, makes us swell with its life-giving properties, never leaving us thirsting for another source.

Then, as we are settling into our soil, our Master comes to prune us. (Jn 15:2) We may not understand His purposes at first, for the shears are sharp and swiftly narrow us down to a manageable size. But the fruit that comes forth in time is exactly what our Lord desires and exactly what He expects. So we trust through it all, until the last branch is cut, and the last fruit is picked.

Finally, He calls us home to be with Him forever, and He says, “My good and faithful servant and friend, you bore much fruit, even when it was most difficult. Welcome home at last.” (Mat 25:23)

So lean into your faith in Christ if you have pain. Draw near to Him so that He will draw near to you. Use these moments and seasons to grow in an intimacy that you didn’t know was possible, or rekindle and re-discover your first love. Remember, the trials you face are not in vain; they are shaping you for eternal glory.

Ponder:

• How do you allow God into your seasons of pain?

• How have you seen God’s hand in your life during times of hardship? Are there areas where you resist His pruning?

• What is your natural instinct when reacting to adversity and discomfort? Do you run away from issues? Or do you get confrontational? What does the Lord desire from you?

• Do you treat God as if He has never proven Himself faithful before?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the deeper things of Your Spirit that guide us to have zeal despite our circumstances. You prune us because You love us. You never allow a circumstance to not bless us, in this life or the next. We can trust Your intentions because You are not a man that You should lie, nor a man that You change. Thank You for Your blessings and giftings which offer us a peace of mind through the thick of sorrow. Please give us wisdom and guide us so that we can see Your hand in all situations.

In Your Son Jesus’ name. Amen.

Many sincere, believing Christians may honestly admit: hardly ever. But this verse draws our attention to the next point: “and His righteousness…” To be kingdom-minded is inextricably linked to living righteously, and then all things shall be added to us, as promised.

Our God is not like man, speaking casually or making empty promises, nor that He would say anything glibly, or halfhearted. (Num 23:19) He is fully prepared to hold up His end of the bargain. He waits for the moment we begin living in a way that allows Him to bless us. What He will not do, however, is shower us with rewards in this life if we persist in sin. God desires to bless us and lead us into abundant life, but persistent sin separates us from experiencing the treasures of His presence.

Following His Word with right intentions leads to newness of heart and daily living.

Does this mean we should do good simply to get rewards? God forbid. Let that thought never enter into our hearts. Pray fervently that our intentions remain renewed and pure. May every last shred of greed and doubt be cast down along with the old man—who died when we first received His Holy Spirit through Christ. (Prov 16:2)

When we pray sincerely and with enthusiasm, what inevitably happens is that we spend more intimate time with Him. And as we grow closer to Him, blessings often follow—sometimes in ways we don’t expect, or even in areas that seem unrelated to our prayers. Chiefly, He blesses us with the wisdom and character to navigate challenges that we previously faced alone. Resolutions, restorations, and restitution come. But even in moments of trial—whether it feels like rejection, hardship, or failure—He remains present and active. We need only seek His face and trust in His purposes by pursuing His Kingdom first.

Let us not forget that the blessings of this life are but a faint shadow of what is to come. We are citizens of a greater kingdom, pilgrims on this earth.

(Phil 3:20-21) And today, we are called to live alongside our fellow laborers in Christ, preferring one another in love. (Rom 12:9-10) Our love for each other should make it evident to the world that we are from a better place—a kingdom where our reigning King is alive, well, and lovingly guiding us. A King who desires to rule and subjugate through peace, gentleness, kindness, forbearance, and love.

Ponder:

• In what ways can I seek the Kingdom of God more intentionally in my daily life?

• Do I trust that God’s presence is with me even in challenging or discouraging times?

• How can I ensure that my motivations remain pure and centered on God’s will, not just seeking blessings for myself?

• What does seeking God’s righteousness look like in practical terms for me today?

• How do I respond when things don’t seem to go according to my plans? Do I still trust that God is working for my good?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, let Your grace and peace cover me as I discern Your Holy Will over my life. Too often I let the world take priority instead of seeking first Your Kingdom. Help me rediscover my purpose found solely in You. I repent of my distractions and pray for renewed focus during my pilgrimage. Thank You for Your repeated reminders. I praise Your Name and Word. Thank You for Your workmanship in my life thus far, today, and for the wonderful plans and challenges awaiting me tomorrow. Try my faith and see that it is acceptable, not by my might, but by Your Son Jesus. In His precious name, I pray. Amen.

John 15:7 reminds us that if we remain in Him, and His words live in us, we will ask for what we desire and it will be done. But this promise is not a blank check for any request; it’s a reflection of how abiding in Christ changes us. The more we abide, the more our desires align with God’s will. We begin to want what God wants and pray in harmony with His direction through His Holy Spirit. The more we delight in Him, the more our desires reflect His purpose for our lives. (Ps 37:4) This isn’t just about prayer alone, but about God teaching us how to live in the purpose He has designed for us.

If our desires are contrary to the Lord’s will, does He answer our prayer? Sometimes He allows us to receive what we ask for, but only for us to be chastened! Praise God, He only chastens those He loves: but rightfully so. When we remain in Jesus and His words in us, we learn to pray according to His will, knowing what to loose and bind (Mt 16:19) and what to be persistent about. (Ps 40:1) In this way, we are called to rejoice and pray without ceasing, for it is through constant communion with God that our hearts stay aligned with His. (1 Th 5:16-18)

Abiding in Christ shifts our focus away from self-centered desires. Instead, we seek the salvation and well-being of those around us through the help of His Holy Spirit. We can confidently put ourselves in others’ shoes, trusting that God will provide our every need. In Christ, we are made complete, lacking for nothing. (Ja 1:4) Jesus, seated at the Father’s side, is focused and interceding for us—so that we, in turn, may focus on others and pray that they come to a saving knowledge and a repentant heart (Jn 17:20-23) This interceding Jesus performs is perfect, so we don’t have to be.

Begin with the Gospel message of Christ. Without it, every other lesson or truth about God will be clouded by a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose behind His precious gifts, mercies, and spiritual wisdom. He is ready to impart these blessings, but they are only fully understood through knowing Jesus.

For instance, when we are abiding in Him (and He in us) it transforms our perspective, even in how we view our deepest rivals or outright enemies. Why should we pray for and bless those who have wronged us, especially those who have severely victimized us? One with a limited perspective of being in Christ might say it’s because the Lord wills it. But to those who see Christ also in themselves, they recognize that to bless our enemies is to bless God. As it is written, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Ac 20:35)

When He abides in us, the satisfaction we find surpasses any material gift. We labor diligently to find contentment in Christ, yet so often it seems just beyond our reach—until we realize it was never about our own efforts. It has always been Christ in us, by grace. (1 Co 15:10) Yes, there are principles of sowing and reaping in heaven, where giving leads to receiving; but more importantly, there are principles of storing up treasures that last for eternity. Our Lord places far more value on heavenly rewards than on those which are destined to decay. (Mt 6:19)

When we abide in Christ, even our perspective on earthly wealth changes. If we rejoice in the light of Christ and allow Him to shape our hearts’ desires, (Rm 13:12) we will find ourselves disenchanted with the fleeting riches of this world. Instead, we will be filled with zeal for the crowds of people waiting for us in heaven.

Is it wrong to be wealthy, to have excess, to be rich, or even poor for that matter? Absolutely not! God will use each of us according to what we’ve been blessed with. (Rm 12:6) The real challenge to our faith lies in how we bless others, so that God might be blessed and glorified. The wisdom of the world often tells us, “I cannot take care of you until I have taken care of myself.” And yet, Jesus humbled himself so much to the point of death for you.

Before we readily put God into a box based on our own intellectual understanding, consider this verse from the prophet Isaiah:

Ponder:

• How can I more deeply embrace His presence and allow His desires to shape my own, even in the way I view my enemies, blessings, and challenges?

• Do I approach prayer with a heart ready to be transformed, or do I expect God to fulfill my own plans?

• As I abide in Christ, are my desires truly aligned with His will, or am I still seeking my own way?

Prayer:

Dear heavenly Father,

I come before You seeking Your abiding presence. Your ways are higher than my ways and Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. I thank You for Your invitation, and confess that I have sought my own desires above Your own. Transform my heart, Lord, and align my prayers with Your perfect will. Help me to trust that You are in control even when I cannot see how. Help me understand that Your plans are always good. And give me the grace to love those who have wronged me, to be content with the blessings You’ve given, and to seek treasures in heaven rather than those that wither and fade. May You guide me by Your Holy Spirit, that I may delight always in Your presence and bring glory to Your name. In Your Son Jesus' precious name, Amen.

Often, we justify ourselves in our conscience by saying, “I haven’t committed the act,” conveniently ignoring how closely we’ve flirted with the temptation in our thoughts.

While the verse specifically addresses men looking at women, the principle applies universally—women toward men, men toward men, and women toward women.

But what is the true harm of this sin? Afterall, it’s just a thought. If no action is taken and one’s eyes do not linger, is any real damage done? Jesus answers this forcefully in the following verse: “If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.” (Mat 5:29) This isn’t hyperbole—it's a warning about the eternal stakes of unchecked sin. Just as hate is equated to murder, lust is equated to adultery, because both destroy something sacred:

§ Murder violates the image of God in another person.

§ Adultery violates the sacred reflection of God’s covenantal love for His church, a love designed to be mirrored in the union of marriage.

Does this mean outward and inward sins are judged and penalized equally in this life? Certainly not. Physical infidelity carries consequences—divorce, loss of trust, broken families, financial ruin, and perhaps even jail time. Yet, to God, the heart’s intent reveals the core issue. Lust may not lead to action simply because circumstances don’t allow it, but the covenant is already broken in the heart.

Ask yourself: If no one would ever find out and you were certain you could “get away with it,” would the temptation grow stronger? Such questions reveal the importance of cross-examining our hearts deeply. (Ps 139:23-24)

Is your heart moving toward God, or are your thoughts straying from the precious ones at home? Are there unresolved issues creating distance in your relationships? The Apostle Paul admonishes us to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Cor 10:5) This requires the intentional, and careful habit of spiritual discipline. Lest without it we risk laying down our shield of faith and succumbing to the enemy’s fiery darts. (Eph 6:16)

God gives us the tools to combat sinful thoughts.

Philippians 4:8 instructs us to focus on what is true, noble, pure, and praiseworthy. This is a prescription for redirecting our minds from lust to purity, and thereby holiness.

When you find yourself convicted, take captive your thoughts, and return to the Father with humble repentance. Be direct, honest, and thorough in your prayers. Then, take it a step further: pray blessings over those you may have wronged in your heart or mind. By cultivating repentance, and renewing your mind with the Spirit’s good things, you can experience freedom and victory in your walk with Christ. (Ps 51:10) (Rom 12:2) (2 Cor 10:5)

Ponder:

• Have I allowed thoughts to run unrestrained in my mind?

• Do I often allow my mind to wander, causing anxiety, lust, depression, or other unprofitable thoughts?

• What practical steps can I take today to foster genuine love and respect for my brothers and sisters that are made in the image of God?

• Meditate on 2 Corinthians 10:4-6, Colossians 3:1-3, and Philippians 4:6-9

Prayer:

Father God, I thank You for the perfect example of Your Son Jesus and Your Word that You have blessed me with. Despite my worst sinful days, You always have my best interest in mind. I pray that I become more like Your Son, and that my flesh may be crucified by the power of Your Holy Spirit working inside me. I pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.

What other answer should we give except, “Yes!” Have you heard that urgent inner beckoning—the kind that calls you to drop everything? You might mistake it for impulse, or perhaps you may be in a dry season where you feel far from Him. We risk ourselves becoming crestfallen, yet He is faithful to be found when you seek with all your heart (Jer 29:13).

God is not only loving, but He’s understanding. He gives not only what we ask, but what we truly need. So, you will have the Lord if you truly want Him, and even more, because He knows how deeply you need Him (Ps 103:14).

God desires intimacy, not just formality. Intimacy is born from trusting God enough to let Him into your heart. A trusting heart is one that listens for His beckoning—open to His searching and cross-examination (Psalm 139:23–24). It confesses not only sins, but also weaknesses (2 Corinthians 12:9–11). It is willing to be vulnerable and to believe in the impossible (Matthew 17:20). Do you believe there are limits to what God can do in your life? Or have you surrendered your doubt?

My expectations, limits, doubts, all need to be suspended.

Holy Faith doesn’t test God—it trusts Him. Time and time again God breaks expectations, rising to meet the challenge of the day. When we adorn ourselves with the light of Christ, (Rm 13:12) we open our spiritual eyes to discern the things that point us towards Jesus Christ (2 Cor 4:18 & 1 Cor 2:9-10). We then can see He moves in spectacular ways, but also in the subtle and mundane. He works in diverse manners (He 1:1), and no need is too small for Him. Don’t disqualify your pain just because it feels trivial. This however is not a calling to tempt God through prayer and to challenge Him. He is always able to change anything at any time, but you are expected to have Trust.

In limiting our own trust we hinder our Holy Fear, and push not God away, but ourselves away from Him. But what is Holy Fear? Simply put, it is the beginning of wisdom (Pr 9:10). While we may be offered lots of philosophies and self-helps from gurus and sophists, God says that He has a true understanding waiting to be recieved (Col 2:8). This Holy Fear colors our entire perspective from the big to the small, which means our prayers take on a different flavor and scent as they are carried to heavenly places.

Having a Holy Fear is the Key to Intimacy with your Father, through Christ, empowered by His Holy Spirit in you.

He wants your whole life, including the highs, the lows and the seemingly minute qualms. Don’t allow dryness, doubt, or unworthiness keep you from seeking His face. The book is open. The call is out. And the face of your Savior is turned toward you.

Ponder:

• Do I trust God enough to open my heart to Him?

• Am I prone to flippant prayers when ‘everything is fine’?

• Do I trust God’s leading even when He rebukes, convicts, or calls me to surrender?

• What parts of my life do I still hesitate to bring before God in prayer, and why have I held them back?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

May You continue to call and may I continue to respond. I know You will never forsake me. You will always be faithful to draw me back to You, even if I wander. Even then Lord, I will seek Your face. Lord let me never become so deaf to Your voice that I should ever ask if I’ve heard. Teach me to pray about all my burdens—great and small. Help me open my heart to You, so that my quiet doubts and unspoken longings may be laid bare before Your altar—an offering of trust. Remove from me every false boundary I’ve set around my prayers. Strip away the hesitation, the pride, and the fear that keeps me from letting You into the deepest places of my heart. Help me to trust that You welcome me, not just in power but in tenderness. Father, give me a Holy Fear that encourages me to seek You for intimacy, not just for pleasure or habit. And when I doubt, test me again by reminding me: You are faithful. You are near. You are my Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

First, confirm your place in heaven by nurturing your faith through Christ. Only then can you be sure that He is using your obedience for the sake of those around you.

We are all aware of this nagging and unpopular reality of not just Hell, but the lake of fire, which swallows even Hades in its depths. Death comes for us all at different times, but it is always unexpected (Jm 4:13-14). Do not give death the chance to claim another loved one when you know The Truth and haven’t expressed it when given the opportunity. Imagine a bus barreling down the road while a pedestrian, distracted on their phone, is unaware of the impending danger. Would you stand by and let fate take its course, convinced there are better choices for an agent of salvation? Don’t fool yourself—their blood would be on your head if you were prompted to act and resisted. (Ac 18:6)

God always qualifies those He uses: He doesn’t just use the qualified.

His desire to use you justifies your ability to be used (1 Cor 1:27). So be present and available, despite your perceived inadequacies; He sees more in you than you see in yourself. He knows exactly what you are capable of, better than you do. Remember what our Lord said; “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” (Lk 10:2) The season of harvest is now—are you willing to work with your hands and feet? There are many ways to witness, and many more to serve the body. Learning how to do both will teach you how God desires to place you in His kingdom.

Pray and fast for your loved ones. Even if they don’t receive the truth today, you’ve planted a seed—one that can only grow through love and the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Allow God to use your prayer and your compassion, for this is how He desires to work through you to reach your loved ones and strangers alike.

If you think it sounds harsh, consider how our Savior feels.

He found death and hell so miserable, He humbled Himself to endure all the same pains and temptations we experience. He perished in your place, so that you don’t have to go there.

What more could He have done than what He already has? He will not force you. You must surrender your own will and ask Him for forgiveness.

Ponder:

• Have I found assurance in Christ through faith, and confirmed that my name is written in the Book of Life? In what ways can I nurture my faith?

• Am I praying & fasting for the salvation of my loved ones and strangers alike?

• Do I allow fear or feelings of inadequacy to prevent me from speaking about Christ to others?

• How does the reality of eternity influence the way I live my life today?

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Thank You for Your Son Jesus and for conquering the grave. Though battles are still fought, the war has already been won, and victory is ours through You. You gave us the Holy Spirit so we would no longer be separated from You, and so we would never spend eternity in a place that was never meant for us. Thank You for longing for us so deeply, You paid the price for our lives—a price we can never repay. But You don’t require repayment. You only desire our hearts. Help us to grasp the magnitude of that cost and let it deeply transform our lives. In Jesus name. Amen.

Suffering isn’t a sign that something’s gone wrong in your walk with Christ. Often, it’s a sign you’re right where you are expected to be found. The fire you’re feeling isn’t meant to burn you up, but to burn away everything that isn’t of Him. (Mal 3:2-3)

Just as Paul writes, our inner man needs daily renewal, implying that yesterday’s sanctification and yesterday’s zeal are not sufficient for today (2 Cor 4:16). Like a garden left untended, we grow dry, vulnerable, and directionless without continual care. A plant without pruning, watering, or protection will wither, not flourish and produce fruit. Sanctification, then, is not an optional process—it is the means by which God keeps our hearts aligned to true north. And in His love, He allows trials to serve as the very instruments that bring our need for Him to the surface.

We are not passive in this process. Paul exhorts us to “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” — 2 Corinthians 7:1

Yet it is only by the grace of God that we are able to do so. We are, after all, His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works (Eph 2:10).

Sanctification is both an invitation and a command—a divine partnership of grace and obedience.

Testing the Authenticity of Your Faith

When you are being tested and feel enshrouded in darkness, remember our Lord is Light, and there is no darkness in Him (1 Jn 1:5). Therefore, we will not abide in it for long. When the season we are in tempts us to despair, put your trust fully in Him, because He is faithful to cover you (Ps 91:4).

Our perceived circumstances are never irreconcilable issues that He is unwilling or unable to restore you out of. With merely one turn of the wheel, the bottom spoke will find itself on top.

Likewise, the thorns in our sides – though persistent – are but a temporary vapor, here one day and gone the next (Ps 30:5). Although they sting now, God reminds us that His grace is sufficient for us. (2 Cor 12:7-10) Therefore, be joyful in the knowledge that we do not suffer because we are unloved. Be exceedingly bold in your faith, knowing that God isn’t pushing you away but rather drawing you closer, as He reminds you that trials are part of life in a fallen world (Jm 1:2-4). He is working all of these things for the good of the saints!

And even if the worst should come, remember: it is nothing compared to the glory in store for us entering the kingdom of heaven (Ac 14:22). This is the Hope we believe in and cling tightly to.

Refined, Not Destroyed

The phrase “fiery trial” implies discomfort and even agony, however, it also implies purification. Gold is refined by fire, and from it emerges pure, untarnished metal that is fit for adorning kings and queens. God is not interested in superficial worship. He wants all of you.

"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." — 2 Corinthians 4:17

Calling Comes With Crushing

• Called to Marriage? You may walk through heartbreak to better appreciate the depth of covenantal love.
  
  

• Called to Steward Wealth? Financial hardship may teach you how to be a wise, humble, and generous steward.
  
  

• Called to Abundant Life? Loss may press you towards greater compassion and urgency in speaking life to others.
  

God wastes nothing for the blessing of His children. God allows trials to mold us – not to punish us, but to prepare.

"Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word." — Psalm 119:67
"My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness." — 2 Corinthians 12:9

For those among us who are elderly, suffering from addiction, or enduring a debilitating disease, hardship, or oppression, God waits on your refinement – for you to find boldness to speak life through the Gospel in every circumstance. Tell those with ears to hear the testimony of Hope in your heart and why you love and trust Jesus. Share with them where you were when Jesus found you.

Ponder:

• Do I view my trials as coincidental interruptions or as opportunities for refinement?

• Am I trusting in God’s faithfulness even when my circumstances are painful?

• Am I more concerned with escaping discomfort or with being shaped into Christ’s likeness?

• Has my faith grown deeper through hardship, or have I become more distant?

Prayer:

Dear heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your attention to my plights. There is nothing in my life that escapes Your attentive eyes. It says in Your word that You keep record of every tear and every sorrow. You care for me more than I could ever understand. Please help me with my doubts. Wherever I am lacking in faith, help me to mature and to trust that You will keep me through every circumstance and fiery trial. Thank You Lord for the unconditional love and grace given to me through Your Son Jesus Christ. In His name I pray. Amen.

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” Jn 10:27 KJV

Until that moment, we cannot truly discern when He is speaking. Unless the Spirit of God is resting on us, our prayers may go unheard, and our supplications will not successfully address our infirmities. How then do we know we pray within the Will of the Father?

The Holy Spirit creates an atmosphere of prayer unceasing, always pointing to Christ Jesus despite circumstance (1 Thes 5:16-18). True building of your spiritual life is only achieved through Holy Faith, and such faith is the prerequisite to prayer in the Spirit. Praying within the Spirit is how we may hear Him who actively speaks! (Ju 1:20 & Eph 6:18) Therefore, pray as you ought. Even if it feels unnatural to our flesh; it must become our first nature.

You may be wondering what it means to have Holy Faith? A Holy Faith is not just belief, rather it’s consecrated trust. Living, breathing surrender to the God who refines through trial, sanctifies us in truth, and calls us to walk not by sight, but by total dependence on Him (2 Cor 5:7).

Holy Faith is set apart from shallow optimism or convenient religion.

It is rooted in the blood-bought promises of Christ, strengthened in adversity, and evidenced by our obedience, even when it costs everything Rom 16:26). It is a faith that fears the Lord more than the loss of comfort, and loves Him more than life itself.

“Though He slay me, yet I trust Him…” Job 13:15a NKJV

Holy Faith doesn’t just believe that God exists, but lives as though He is Holy, Sovereign, Present, and True.

So if we long to walk in the Spirit as the Apostles did (Ac 1:8 & 13:52) we must ask, are we building ourselves up in our most holy faith? Are we praying within the Will of His Spirit not only with word, but with our lives surrendered; living, but sacrificed (Rom 12:1)

The Spirit isn’t natural, but rather super-natural. Unfortunately, many Christians of today have become far too incredulous to the existence of that which they cannot see, touch, or hear. Do not keep God at a comfortable arm’s length, for He will never force you. But woe to those who never believe God’s mercy and love may extend past the limits of their belief —saved, yet not savoring the joys and triumphs awaiting them in this life.

Know also whatever we do, we do because we are the envoys of True Faith.(2 Cor 5:20) He intends to use us for His purposes. What better way to be used than to let Him do the speaking, the preaching, the correcting? For when the Spirit speaks, it is the Will of the Creator’s heart.(1 Cor 2:11)

Ponder:

• Have I truly sought to hear His voice in prayer, or have I allowed doubt to overshadow my faith?

• Have I relinquished my doubt that God would speak to me personally?

• What does the Word say in response to my doubts that God would speak to me?

• When was the last time I chose obedience over convenience, trusting that God would meet me in the risk?

• When I pray, am I relying on the Spirit to guide me, or do I simply recite requests from my own understanding?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

You are Good and Merciful. Thank you that even though your Son left for a time, it was so that He could send the Helper. Thank you for the Helper who tells us about the Truth of Jesus. Without the Spirit of Truth we would be lost in all spiritual duties we are called to perform. Continue to help guide us, and keep us in true faith in Jesus. And let our prayers come from a place of holy abidance in your presence. I pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Knowing full well Judas’s intentions, Jesus still saw fit to cleanse him (1 Jn 1:9), that his outward cleanliness might reflect inwardly. He then addressed His students saying,

“I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.”

So, what is it that Jesus really does? Beyond simply showing strength of character, and deeper than loving His friends and disciples, Jesus demonstrated a willingness and grace that stemmed from a sober, unordinary love.

Parents—what better way to teach your children than to demonstrate by how you live? (Prov 22:6)

Friends—what better way to counsel than to be present? (Prov 27:9-10)

Spouses—what better way to enjoy each other’s company than to love self-sacrificially? (Eph 5:21)

Yet this commandment isn’t just reserved for those closest to us. It’s for all believers. As Jesus showed us and then further explained, if you let Christ live through you, He is faithful to fulfill His promises. He will deal with the washing of all sins of the flesh – your corrupt speech, your anger, your addictions, your pride, and much more. So, as you become more like Him with every passing surrender (Eph 5:1), you will realize that the transformation of your heart isn’t displayed only by what you stop doing, but also by what you are now beginning to do instead. This “doing” is born from the Love Jesus spoke of.

But what kind of Love is this? It would be difficult to describe in the space afforded, and it takes a lifetime attempting to choose. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit, our wonderful Helper (Jn 14:26), steps in where we fall short (Rm 8:26). He gives us the ability to love, even when we are tempted to hate. God does not use guilt, manipulation, or shame to get us to move when we are out of order with Him, and therefore, we shouldn’t either.

Instead, God will use conviction – that when our relationships are stressed, it’s an urging that we need to return so that we can be right with each other. When bitterness grips our hearts – when an enemy, an estranged loved one, or a deceased offender continues to haunt our minds – we remember that Christ washed Judas’s feet, despite the betrayal and treachery that would soon befall Him. Our Lord laid down His life so that we might live. He laid down His life because He loved us first (1 Jn 4:19) and so that we might become His friends, as there is no greater love than that of one willing to lay down his life for his friends (Jn 15:13).

Every pain, fear, and woe that aches the world stems from this central issue: a lack of love (Mat 24:12). So, what sets us apart from the world? God forbid we begin to look just like it (Rom 12:2). If we never learn to love each other more than ourselves, we’ve missed the mark. If we don’t learn to love ourselves with dignity and grace, we’ve denied the image of God in us.

We should always strive to treat our fellow Christian with preference, humility, and forgiveness—and trust that the same will be returned. We must also remember that even God’s people stumble often (1 Jn 2:1).

Pray for reconciliation, pray for restoration, and pray for God’s peaceable forgiveness, because He gave us Grace.

Know this: your worth is not measured by how others love you. It was decided when Christ died for you. And likewise, your love for friends, family, significant others—and even enemies—is measured by your self-sacrifice, which begins with your surrender to God.

Ponder:

· How would my relationships change if I loved more like Jesus?

· Do I use guilt or pressure in my relationships, or do I lead with grace and conviction?

· What steps can I take to show self-sacrificial love in my closest relationships this week?

· In what areas am I withholding love because of fear, pride, or past wounds?

Prayer:

Father, help me to love like You do. This kind of love does not come simply or easily. The Love of Jesus is impossible without You. And yet, this is the ultimate freedom, to achieve this kind of love! So Lord, feed me opportunities of testing, that although I may lack the love in me, Your Holy Spirit within me can make up the difference. Let me conform to Jesus so that I may be different from the rest of the world, which would only see me defeated and hateful toward others. Let me love all the way until I reach Your house in heaven. In Jesus’s precious name. Amen.

He speaks of a covenant – a binding agreement – not with another person, but with his own eyes. This is not merely a fleeting decision or a casual promise; it’s a solemn vow before God. Job knew that he had no option but to keep his vow ‘Why then…?’ should he look elsewhere? God forbid his eyes begin to wander, leading his thoughts astray.

In today’s world, visual temptations are more accessible and abundant than ever. With just a glance, we expose ourselves to images that pull our hearts and minds away from the Lord. But like Job, we must not see it as radical to take severe steps to protect our purity. Jesus made it clear: if you look in lust, you’ve already committed the matter in your heart (Mat 5:28). This is deadly serious, and not just about avoiding lust; it’s about choosing to honor God with every part of our being, starting with our eyes (Rom 12:1).

When our eyes stray, our hearts soon follow, and our minds become disconnected from Christ. Where then does God intend for our mind to be? Is your pride worth the risk of compromising your purity? We often tell ourselves we can handle a little indulgence, that brief glance won’t lead to anything more. (2 Sam 11:2) But sin is deceitful, and the smallest crack can allow a flood of temptation into our lives. God doesn’t desire such excuses; He desires our whole heart. (Jer 29:13) Allow your inward sanctification to continue. Focus on purity and prayer, meditating on His Word when temptation comes. (Phil 4:8) Remember your covenants and the price Jesus paid so that you might live eternally.

Ponder:

· Am I allowing small compromises in my life that could lead to bigger sins?

· Have I made a covenant with my eyes? What steps can I take today to ensure that I am honoring God with what I look at?

Prayer:

Lord, I come before You with a heart that desires purity and holiness. Help me to make a covenant with my eyes, to guard them against anything that would lead me away from you. Strengthen me to resist temptations that surround me, and keep my focus on what is true, novel, and pure. I need Your grace, Lord, to live out this commitment every day. Let my life reflect Your holiness, and may my thoughts, words, and actions be pleasing in Your sight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

We can feel a kinship with Ezra, as we, too, are often faced with the familiar struggle of faith amid potential embarrassment. We believe in an infinite, indescribably powerful God for whom nothing is impossible – a truth He has shown to saints through both life-altering miracles and the eternal truth of His Word.

Yet, how is it that we proclaim God’s goodness and power to others, only to entertain the seed of doubt that whispers, “What if He doesn’t act?” Do we hesitate in evangelism, or do we remain steadfast, knowing that even in God’s perceived inaction, He is still worthy of all praise?

Who are we to question the seasons God places us in, designed to try and refine our faith? As God reminds us in His Word, we should not despise small beginnings, for they carry eternal wisdom with them (Zech 4:10).

We have nothing to feel ashamed for, least of all the Gospel which is the power of God! (Rom 1:16) Therefore, let us cast aside all shadows of doubt and uproot the seeds the enemy tries to sow in our hearts. Through Christ, and Christ alone, you are sufficient for the LORD. So, allow the Holy Spirit to fill and shape you into His workmanship, placing your confidence not in your own outcomes, but in the One who holds all outcomes in His hands.

Ponder:

· Do I feel embarrassed telling others of Jesus when amid adversity interrupting my life?

· Do I let doubt hamper the steadfastness of my faith?

· What can I do to have firmer confidence in Gods sovereignty over my life?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, Help me to know when to speak, and when to hold my peace. Make your name Holy and take Glory for yourself despite myself. And in my weakness, claim your strength. So that I might lift up your name evermore! In Jesus’ precious name. Amen.

Truly has there ever been a sweeter promise? Our Creator, immutable and steadfast, has not wavered from His own divine purpose from the dawn of time. Heaven and earth shall sooner pass away than one jot or tittle from the Word of God. (Matt 5:18) His promises, when etched into our new hearts, renew us daily as we fall in love with His Word. The more we strive for that coveted intimacy the clearer we hear our Master Jesus speaking to us by the Holy Spirit. (Jer 31:34)

But, what say you in the face of temptation? What say you at the tail end of a sin that inevitably left you for want? Did it satisfy, or did it remind you of chasms left untempered and flesh yet to be crucified? (Gal 2:20) God never abandoned His duty over you. Yet, without much compelling discourse, we push Him away for sake of our bloodied hands, and dirty past. Indeed, it is we who have forsaken Him. But God, dissatisfied with our estrangement, determined to redeem us and fulfill a Promise only He could keep.

He washes your hands as if there were never any deeds, cleans your linens as if they had never been soiled, even folds your laundry and fills your cup preparing a table in the face of your enemies. (Ps 23:5) He does more than we even ask, exceeding all expectations. Fill your worship with the praises that rightfully belong to GOD ALMIGHTY, for He inhabits them with earnest. (Ps 22:3) So praise Him for breath, life renewed, the reconciliation of all things to Himself (Col 1:20), and more!

He promised to judge the nations of the world, but we are not of them. He promised that when we receive grace, we may attain a peace that surpasses all understanding. (Phil 4:7) He promised that when all the world is against us, He boldly becomes our buckler (Ps 18:2). Who then can stand against us? (Rom 8:31) Reflect on these promises as you walk humbly, meditating on the written Word and the promises given to you. We have no right to withhold praise due to Him.

Ponder:

· What in my life do I take for granted, that I don’t praise you for?

· What in my life do I think is too big or too small for me to bring in prayer?

Prayer: Father, your Word is Good and you lift it above your own name. (Ps 138:2) You cleanse me of all unrighteousness and I often foolishly forget my position within your grace. Yet you have forgiven me all the same. I am unworthy, yet you make me worthy, I am frail, yet you make me strong. Thank you Lord, for the power of prayer that we may reason together through your Holy Spirit. I praise and lift your name, In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

How long do you think our loved ones who have gone before us into the presence of the Lord (2C 5:8) have been waiting for us in paradise (Lk 23:43)? What will the passing of time be like within His presence? If it is anything like how time passes for the Lord, who is from everlasting to everlasting (Ps 90:2), then it might seem as if no time passed at all. Once we arrive, time will become inconsequential, for we will have inherited everlasting life.

Our loved ones, who bore the faith to their graves before us, loving Jesus as their savior, may have been in heaven for what seems like generations to us. They remain in our memories, albeit sometimes with fond vagueness, made more real through the stories passed down by our families. We never fully knew them, yet they lived a life of faith, sowing seeds of posterity into future generations. Living a life so that others might see the work of Jesus through them.

When we see them again in heaven, in our newness of our glorified bodies (Phil 3:31), we might ask them, “How have you been?” They may respond “I’ve only just arrived.” For to the Lord, a thousand years in His sight are as yesterday. (Ps 90:4)

But until that day, we must learn to number our days. (Ps 90:12) If you knew you would live for about 29,000 days, and you had only 10,000 days left, what would you spend them doing? And if you only had 10 Sundays left, what would truly matter to you? Would your priorities change? Would you still care as much about your corner office, your boat, and the next million dollars? The Word says not to boast about tomorrow, for we do not know what a day might bring. (Pr 27:1) Our days could be numbered tomorrow as we head to work or tonight as we sleep peacefully.

Therefore, today is the day to cast our cares on the Lord amid uncertainty, so that we might also be an example of His ways to others, just as the ones who went before us were. With God as our shield against all anxieties, we can rest in perfect trust. (Ps 3:5) Keep short accounts with those you love, and even those you wish to love better. Tell them you love them. Tell them who put that love in your heart. Remind them that while our time here is short, the next life is forever. We do not know when we, or they will be called home to the Lord.

Ponder:

· Am I prioritizing what matters most to God in my life in light of eternity?

· How am I sowing into Gods kingdom of next generation believers like the faithful who went before me?

· What would it look like to “number my days” wisely?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for your scripture that puts into perspective what truly matters. I repent of the things that I’ve allowed to take my eyes off eternity of paradise with You. I thank You for the breath you breath into my lungs, and the openness of my heart to receive what wisdom Your Word desires to hide away into my heart. I ask for a double portion of wisdom in the days you’ve numbered me for. And I look forward to how you may use me to bring others to know You, and how You plan to use my life to bring glory to Yourself. I pray this all in Your Son’s Jesus precious name. Amen.

What does God say to us through the prophet Isaiah?

“Come now, let us reason together… though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be white as snow” (Is 1:18). Too often, however, we delay that precious time spent reasoning with the LORD, lost in shame and self-condemnation. It is as if we desire more to be treated as the wicked, who are doomed to calamity, than to be treated as sons or daughters destined for eternal life by grace.

In a shame-ridden mindset, we measure how much forgiveness we deserve by a standard not spoken of by God, but by the world, which loves to evangelize its own twisted morals. This world, familiar with every temptation and vice, often influences even seasoned Christians, leading us to wield a heavier judgement against ourselves and others. We begin to question how much grace to offer, how much forbearance to extend, and how much love to impart – never stopping to ask, ‘How much of these things does God offer to me?’ (Rom 5:20)

Yet, that same measure which we bare against others can turned inward, adding a crushing weight that the world eagerly presses upon our conscience. But if we yield to that still, small voice, we may hear the gentle whisper: “…My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Mat 11:28-30)

It’s okay to go back to where our faith began, to the moment we first encountered God’s grace, when we were adopted by a loving and forgiving Father. When we fall, we can remember the grace that surpasses all understanding, the grace we received despite our own shortcomings. We stumble as many times as it takes to reach the finish line, where the Lord waits to embrace us, saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” (Mat 25:23). Instead of getting caught up in self-condemnation, we need to turn back to simplicity of faith, to the “milk” that settles our soul.

Repent, recommit, and fix your gaze to the face of God. He is already there, ready to receive us joyfully, seventy times seven.

Ponder:

· Do I often measure myself or others by the world’s standards instead of by God’s grace?

· How can I return to the simplicity of faith when I stumble?

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for your endless grace and forgiveness. Where my weaknesses begin, Your Holy Spirit takes over and accomplishes what I am incapable of doing on my own. Grant me the patience, love, and forgiveness I need for others, and myself. Strengthen me to walk humbly before others and to worship boldly before Your throne, knowing that all my sins—and the sins of others—were paid for at the cross. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
