A simple phrase that whispers confidence will tell you that this story matters, without needing to say you won’t believe what happens next. It’s not necessarily about grabbing your attention, it’s about earning your trust.

Earlier this year, I took part in The Telegraph’s Media Literacy Programme. It was like a crash course in just how precise headline writing really is. One challenge my fellow journalism warriors and I took on was crafting a sports announcement into something tight, accurate, and engaging.

Now, I was that kid at school who was picked last for PE. Being swapped around Sports Classes depending on what sport I was adequate enough at (spoiler alert: that wasn’t many). So, when I knew the headline had to be based on Sport, I froze. What did I know?

But, I’ll tell you what I did know. Every word mattered. Every verb carried weight. I knew my research. And finally, I knew how to be clear, compelling, and honest. To my surprise, I was awarded first place in the challenge, ensuring my beliefs that with knowledge on how to engage, I can turn something I have no idea about, into a winner.

Through that experience, I learned that headline writing is really about finding that balance between speed and substance, which is something I discovered The Wall Street Journal does masterfully. The sharp, yet quiet confidence, combined with the necessity of telling the truth, is a lesson I will carry with me throughout my progression in journalism.

As readers, we might not realise how much we carefully curate our choices in deciding what to click on. We’re really responding to tone, rhythm, and trust. We feel when it’s right. It’s hard to decipher why, as the art is invisible when done well.

For me, headlines are an invitation and you can decide whether to step into a story.

So now, every time I’m in the process of creating a headline, I ask myself the same question every time: How do we make people care, and how do we convey the truth?

monday 31st march:

the clocks went forward yesterday, thus getting up today was dreadful. the alarm was set for 7.30am, meaning technically it’s 6.30am. yikes.

after gaslighting myself into deserving a lie-in, I slept until necessary, waking up in time to do my prep work for university. currently, I am studying a module all about feminism. it’s truly my calling, making my studying a whole lot easier.

and then came the walk to uni. in a world where I feel constantly distracted and chronically online, i’m setting myself a challenge: for my half an hour walk to uni, don’t use my phones. and yes, that even means no headphones allowed! finding time to appreciate the world around through my own eyes and not a camera lense, hearing the birds tweet and cawk, the hustle and bustle of the cars on the way to many different destinations, the swarm of my fellow uni students, who like me, have left with little time to spend.

so there I made it to my seminar. turns out, many people wanted a lie-in, but for a lot longer than I allowed myself to. only 4 people (including me) attended. my tutor appeared shocked and slightly awkward at the prospect of only talking to our very tiny group (for reference, there is normally around 15 of us), but we had to work with what we had, making it pretty insightful and highly engaging with no room for any of us to hide!

a full-blown headache has now taken over me as I write this up in my student union’s cafe, yet the grind goes on.

tuesday 1st april

how I adore the start of a new month! even though it may sound like such a cliche, i love the fresh start that each month invites. especially april, as we see spring bloom and anticipate the arrival of summer.

my walk to uni consists of rows of blossom trees swaying over me, waving me good morning and painting the scenery pink. with my coffee in hand, i walk swiftly to uni, extremely excited for my favourite lecture - feminism. as part of my english degree, i am lucky to have the options of choosing a module from another course, so obviously i was going to pick philosophy.

after my lecture, i take in the beautiful, summer-like day by sitting in the sun on campus, and reading my book.

another insightful lecture passes by and before i know it i’m walking back from uni. even though i had set the challenge of not listening to anything whilst i walk, i couldn’t help but be drawn to madeline argy’s new podcast episode: the male gaze. Her raw and particularly correct choice of words made this podcast more gripping than ever. she discussed the new netflix series adolescence (a series that truly blew me away and shocked me to my core), and it was one of my favourite podcast episodes of hers yet. an undeniably eye-opener to the world we live in.

and now as i sip my english tea while the sun floods through my window (making my laptop quite hard to see), i am ready for what another day might bring.

wednesday 2nd april

today, I have no lectures and therefore I can have an easy, well-deserved reset day to prepare for the second half of the week. as I am going on holiday this Saturday (the beginning of the easter break), I must begin to pack.

as a uni student, my wash pile endlessly grows so today was the day I must wash everything - especially if I am wanting to pack for the easter break. as always, I bundle everything into my washing machine, throw in some colour catcher and hope for the best.

while my clothes revive themselves, I head to my pilates class, and dare I say it was highly difficult. i had the embarrassing muscle shakes with every exercise proving more of a reason for me to keep up with these classes and aim to attend more than once a week. however, the movement felt good and I feel better about myself for it.

on the walk home I spotted a box of free items outside someone’s house, so how could I walk past without having a look? and there it was. the sweetest, tiny, pocket notebook with gold patterns decorated across its blue vintage cover. i picked it out the bix straight away and took it home with me! the perfect journal for my upcoming holiday!

the rest of my day will consist of packing, putting away my washed clothes that I won’t be bringing with me, nipping to the shops for some snacks, reading my book, fake tanning for my trip, and enjoying the spring sunshine!

thursday 3rd april

16 degrees out means one thing and one thing only: i’m dressing for summer. after a long awaited period, I can finally wear my capris again and emody my model-off duty in summer look. sunglasses are on, and we have another day at uni.

well, this one is fairly different.

my legs making a rare appearance means that no work will be done, and I will be spending my breaks sun bathing at uni. so after some fun vintage shopping at lunch, I find a nice bit of greenery to lie on, just outside my lectures. this may have been the best uni day i’ve had - just because of this break.

after a rare, relaxing day of uni (12-5), I get ready for a relatively rare night-out. with the change of becoming a second-year student, the love for nights-out has pretty much diminished, making the love for a night-in and a refreshed productive morning seem much more ideal than a reckless night-out.

but tonight is different. tonight, my student club is hosting a soul night, filled with 80s/90s music, making it the ideal night-out for people who prefer a chilled night with a lot less scary people! it’s more of a disco, than a club, making it a whole lot more fun in my opinion.

It’s easy to believe that inspiration comes from outside of ourselves. We scroll, screenshot, and pin, hoping to replicate someone else’s aesthetic. But what if the secret isn’t out there? What if the best muse is the one staring back at you in the mirror - messy hair, smudged eyeliner, and all?
I remember the moment I realised I had been outsourcing my inspiration. I was standing in front of my wardrobe, admiring all my favourite outfits and waiting for the perfect opportunity to wear them and waiting for a party, a compliment, a date. But who was I waiting for? These outfits are perfectly suitable for a day on my own. The only permission I needed was my own.

The undone hair, the mismatched socks, the times you laugh too loudly and can’t stop and spill food down your front. Muses can’t be flawless. There’s no such thing.

So, here’s my advice. Be the person that inspires you. Write the story you’ve been scared to start. Wear the bold outfit to lunch. Be able to call mistakes adventures. When you stop waiting for someone else to inspire you, you realise that you’ve had the capability all along.

every semester I am determined to make it my best and most productive. but that’s all well and good saying it, but I need to work towards it. i am going to share my steps this semester in becoming my best and most productive self.

• wake up earlier. the chance to wake up and complete work before anyone else awakens feels so good. you really can get a lot more done by just waking up a few hours earlier than normal. when I wake up early, I am determined to be productive as I have forced myself out of bed for this.

• attend every lecture and do all the prep work. last semester I stayed on top of this and I'm not falling behind now. doing all the key reading, worksheets, and optional reading for the next week will mean my notes are sufficient and the most productive, and I won't stress about catching up.

  

• joining a new club. it’s the second week of the new semester and I have joined the yoga and pilates society. attending a class or two a week makes me feel good about myself and lets me wind down after a long day at uni. i highly recommend trying out a new class, even if you feel scared or unsure.

• less unnecessary nights out. to be honest, I have hardly been out this academic year, and that’s because quite frankly, i’ve lost interest in it. yes, it was fun when I was a fresher (first year of uni) but now it’s repetitive and I would much rather be in the comfort of my bed. even if I don’t drink one night, the tiredness the next day makes me feel awful emotionally and physically, meaning I can’t be the most productive version of myself.

  

• prioritise meaningful connections. uni has made me feel like a fish in the sea. there are people around me constantly. in the first year, I thought it was great that I had hundreds of friends, but now I have realised who I genuinely am friends with and who I should spend my time with to feel uplifted. stop making unnecessary plans with people you don’t actually really care to see, and spend more time with people who uplift you or do activities you love and enjoy. don’t waste any time.

• find a study spot and stick to it. i love exploring my uni as there are so many buildings I have yet to enter. but now I am determined to find a routine and stick to it, which means that I want to find a specific place (like rory gilmore’s tree) and do my work there each day.

  

• journal every day. for over a year now, I have written down 3 things i do every day at uni. i know that these 3 years will fly by and i want to capture every second of it. taking a few minutes out of every day to write about your day, even if it’s just bullet points, is so worth it. To look back on your uni days and reminisce about this different life will be so heartwarming.

Letting go of a friendship feels like trying to get rid of an old pair of jeans you’ve had for years. They don’t fit anymore, but you keep holding on because they once made you feel amazing. The best memories were spent with them, and now when you meet, you will smile and laugh whilst discussing them times… but you don’t make new memories. They were there for you during pivotal moments. First heartbreaks, big moves, or the time you cut a fringe and needed someone to lie about how good they looked. But just like jeans, some friendships wear thin.

I used to think friendship was a one-size-fits-all deal: if you loved someone once, you’d love them forever. But the truth is, people grow, and sometimes they grow apart. One friend might climb the academic ladder while the other dives headfirst into starting a family. One of you might heal while the other clings to old wounds. And sometimes, you realise that you’ve been holding up a friendship that only feels good in memory.

The signs are subtle at first: their texts stop being thoughtful, and your conversations feel more like obligations than joy. You start hesitating before making plans, wondering if you’re hanging out out of habit or heart. You replay interactions in your mind and realize there’s more tension than connection.

So when do you let go?

Letting go doesn’t mean you’re cruel or ungrateful. It’s recognising that some friendships aren’t built to last forever, and that’s okay. Sometimes, the healthiest thing you can do is honor the role someone played in your life without forcing them to stay in a chapter they’re no longer meant to be in.

Start by being honest with yourself. Does this friendship bring you peace or pressure? Growth or guilt? If it’s the latter, it’s okay to step back, even if it feels like a betrayal of your past.

Next, communicate. This doesn’t have to be a dramatic “we need to talk” moment, but it might mean gracefully loosening the ties. Prioritise honesty over avoidance. Letting go doesn’t mean you have to ghost someone or disappear; it means setting boundaries and being intentional about how you spend your time and energy.

Finally, forgive yourself. Letting go of a friendship can feel like failure, but it’s really about evolution. You can love someone and still choose to move on. Life is too short to fill your inner circle with relationships that don’t serve you.

And so, we need to realise letting go isn’t about loss. It’s about making space for growth, for new connections, and for the person you’re becoming. Because sometimes, the most meaningful breakups aren’t with lovers, they’re with the people we thought we’d never outgrow.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love a Classic. As an English student, I couldn’t sit here and say I don’t read Classics. Give me a Bronte, Plath, Woolf, Kafka or Austen and I will EAT IT UP. I love reading between the lines and finding deeper meanings behind each phrase. I am currently reading Lolita by Valdimir Nabokov and I am so incredibly invested with his writing and choice of words. The lengthy, descriptive sentences have a hold on me and I can’t help but admire his literacy. There’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of unpacking beautifully crafted lines of prose.

However, whilst this is all good, you need to find that balance between the ‘perfect’ classic, and a crappy book.

Bad books, in their own way, can be a form of self-care. After a long day of work, why would you want to read a book that demands your up-most focus and analytical skills. Sometimes you need an easy story, that doesn’t take itself so seriously, where the stakes are low, the plot is predictable, the prose is simple, and will take you about 2-3 days to read. These books won’t challenge you. They won’t make you question society. They won’t have you looking for deeper meanings behind the text.

They will comfort you. They will transport you to a different world away from the one you are currently in. The perfect escapism that is easy to dive into.

It’s like watching a guilty-pleasure TV show. Take Gilmore Girls, for example. Maybe you know that it is cheesy and easy to watch, but it entertains you, lightens your mood, transports you to a different world (God, I wish I could go to Stars Hollow), and gives your brain a break. This is like the popular new book series by Laurie Gilmore. I have read now both The Pumpkin Spice Cafe, and The Cinnamon Bun Book Store, and I really did enjoy both books, even if it didn’t challenge me at all. It is proof that you don’t need perfect, flowery prose to connect with readers and show them a new world. It’s like having a conversation with a friend rather than a lecture from a professor. And that’s what we need.

For some readers, bad books can spark a lifelong love of reading. A lighthearted romance, a fast-paced thriller, or a predictable fantasy novel might not win a Pulitzer, but it can capture a reader’s imagination and lead them to explore other genres and styles. Sometimes, bad books are a gateway to great ones. If I am in a reading slump, I won’t challenge myself to a classic, that would be way too intimidating. I would pick up a short and sweet light-hearted Romance, that doesn't showcase its language, structure, and groundbreaking themes or else I would feel overwhelmed and alienated.

Bad books, with their simplicity and straightforwardness, welcome everyone. They’re an entry point for people who might otherwise shy away from reading altogether. They shouldn’t be frowned upon, they should be loved and cherished for their easy escapism and inclusivity.

So, while I’ll always love my classics, I’ll never underestimate the power of a “crappy” book to bring a little joy into my life. After all, sometimes you don’t need to read between the lines; you just need to turn the page.

it’s been a while. and a half.

i feel as if this is the perfect time to explain where i’ve been so i can get back into writing my blog.

the last post i wrote for my beloved blog was in november. it’s currently january 11th… do forgive me.

since that time to now, i started a writer’s internship where i am now a fashion writer for an established online magazine. furthermore, i have been keeping on top of my uni work completely, making that the continuous priority. and so please forgive me for shutting you out.

but here we are. a new year. approaching a new semester. so it’s time to get back into writing which starts off my first ‘in’ for 2025:

2025 INS:

• never stop writing: i want to write more articles, more blog posts whilst also keeping up-to-date with all my essays and uni work

• continuously love loudly: i want to be more heartfelt to friends, family and my boyfriend, and not be afraid to express my emotions and tell them i love them and appreciate them more

• handwritten letters: bring back the romance of handwriting letters! i have a box, that i have had all my life, where I keep all the postcards and letters my friends have sent to me, and it’s my prized possession. there’s a sincerity and effort writing letters that does not exist for digitalized forms of communication.

• if i’m bored, go on a walk: appreciating the settings around me is much more prominent after i move from home to uni or uni to home. the luxury of solitude and the crisp morning air is something i want to never fail to appreciate.

• write down 3 things that happen everyday: i pretty much mean i need to keep up with journaling. this was something i mostly always did everyday in 2024 and i really love to look back at days i would have forgotten and remember specific, random details of that day

• reading before i sleep: it is the perfect ‘bookend’ to my day (clever right hehe) and lets me feel more peaceful and ready to sleep

• working out: i feel like this is your stereotypical new year’s resolution but i really need to start doing this. i bought myself a gym mat and a 8kg kettle bell back in june and i have only touched it twice. what a waste.

• reading new books everyday: reading is my all-time favourite hobby (hence my english degree) and so i really want to stay motivated and have NO READING SLUMPS this year

• bake for my loved ones: i love the gift of handing out baked goods that i have put my heart into and i want to feel this feeling more often

2025 OUTS:

• waking up after 11am: i haven’t done this in a very long time because i feel like if i sleep past 11, i’m missing most of the day, especially on these winter days where it’s dark so soon

• social media: i want to cherry-pick the choices of apps on my phone so that i don’t spend endless minutes scrolling through an app i couldn’t care less about

• shallow friendships: i would rather have three best friends than twenty friends i can’t reach out to in times of need. i think going to uni makes shallow friendships a very prominent thing for most people, and i shouldn’t waste my time on people that i probably wouldn’t talk to again

• clubbing: every time i go out clubbing, i’m so excited when getting ready but then as soon as i arrive, i want to go home. i don’t find it as fun as i did when i was a fresher, so i need to remember this and start saying ‘no’ to club nights

• getting drunk: linking back to my last point, i don’t like heavily drinking either. the feeling of sickness, hyper-sensitive emotions, and the feeling of not being completely in control and in the moment. i would rather be slightly tipsy.

• being dramatic: i have always, and i hate to admit to this, been labelled as a drama-queen - whether by my teachers, friends or my family. i think i need to be more in-touch with my emotions and whether something actually is affecting me

• starting a series and never finishing it: it’s as if i get FOMO when i put on a new TV show because all i’m thinking about is my forever comfort shows that i’ve rewatched many times. i need to watch different things, instead of rotting in front of the same thing over and over again

The once-thrilling prospect of a Wednesday night out now fills me with dread. The idea of navigating a sea of sweaty bodies, enduring ear-splitting music, and risking a spilled drink on my favorite outfit is less than appealing. Instead, I find myself yearning for quiet nights in, curled up with a good book and a warm drink.

But today, here I am, writing this article to stop myself from stressing about tonight (Wednesday night). The dreaded idea of going out with one of the societies in which I am a member is hosting a social tonight in small groups, to meet new people. And so, with the desire to make more friends, I thought it would be a great idea to go, especially because university is all about trying new things right?

Now that the night has come, I’m sitting here dreading my spontaneous idea incredibly. I’m meant to be heading out for drinks at 5.30 pm - when am I supposed to have dinner?! And if I go clubbing with them afterward, I would most likely be out for over 8 hours… sounds like absolute hell.

So, the plan is, from a girl who wants to socialise but also wants to watch Gilmore Girls in bed, I will go for a drink and leave whenever I’m done fighting the urge to go to bed - pretty ironic considering my theme is to dress as a boxer!

Whatever happened to going out for Cosmopolitans in cool, vintage bars (Carrie Bradshaw, you make me jealous). All a girl wants is to dance around a bar, with a cocktail in hand, 80s music playing, laughing, and feeling as if you are the happiest you’ve ever been with your best friends.

This is what I’m hoping to achieve tonight. I’m on the lookout for girls who want to find this vintage bar from my dreams, who want to have nights-in, alongside nights out.

Anyways, I’ll have to write another post to explain how tonight goes and to see if my feelings on modern-day clubbing have magically changed.

Now I can begin by taking you through my day-to-day autumnal university routine.

• I begin by waking up (latest at 9.30 am) so that I have time to get ready for the day without rushing, and wake up mentally and physically for my day of lectures

• first thing is coffee! The rise of the colder weather feeds into my coffee obsession and coffee becomes the highlight of my routine. I prefer a stronger (intense) coffee - only cheap stuff due to the struggle of being a uni student!

• I’ve started doing a more natural makeup look - I roughly cover my acne scars with concealer, use a tinted moisturizer, TONS of blush, and no mascara. this look is my ‘cold-girl’ uni student makeup look as I look slightly tired due to no mascara but in a cute glowy kind of way x

• I pack my bag for the day and I walk down to my lecture whilst I either listen to a podcast (my favorite atm are Madeline Argy’s or Emma Chamberlain’s) or I will walk with my friend so that we can gossip and prepare each other for the day ahead!

• attend my literature lecture - I have been especially lvoing my lectures on poetry recently as I find them so inspiring and motivating as my lecturers are clearly so passionate about poetry which inspires me to explore more

• after vigorously making notes of everything and anything my lecturer comments on, I head over to the most silent library on campus. This library is very old and classic, with books everywhere and the most perfect autumnal view of a park with orange leaves sprinkled across it. I never work as well as i do in this library

• i last in the silent library for around 2 hours and then head over to the ‘louder’ library where more people are socializing - so that i am not as alienated by the silence of the other library. Here, I can chill and do less work before heading over to a seminar. I always get myself a hot coffee to sip whilst reading in this library in order to warm up from the cold and wake up in time for my seminar

• my literature seminars are very intimidating. I try my hardest to not procrastinate about speaking up but sometimes I can’t find the silent barrier and speak up in front of everyone about my thoughts on the novel. Considering you can’t get me to shut up outside university, my quietness in seminars never fails to surprise me

• after my seminar, I have normally completed the day on campus so I walk back to my uni house, normally stopping off at the shop on the way back to most likely get more pesto pasta!

• as soon as I head back, I shower to wash off the stress from campus and warm myself up again after my 20-minute cold walk back.

• after this, i either pick up my book (currently reading The Queen’s Gambit - literally binge-reading it, it’s so good!!!), or if I feel burnt out from studying literature all day, I will watch a YouTube video (I’m loving Eva Meloche atm)

• after having a good rest, I will turn back on my laptop and go over any prep work for tomorrow so that I am ready for the day and know what to expect

• as time goes on, the more hungry I get and so go and cook my dinner. my dinners normally range from pasta to stirfries to pasta etc. What else would you expect from a uni student?

• I will spend the evenings watching Netflix, reading, journalling about what I did that day and how I am feeling, and then do my skincare

• I will Facetime my bf for an hour or so due to us being long distance, at different unis so this makes me end my day on a high!

• by the end of the Facetime, we both fade off into sleep whilst on Facetime (this really helps when you are doing long distance) and try and aim for 8-9 hours of sleep in order to be ready for another day of uni tomorrow!

The autumnal season makes me most productive due to the cold but stunning weather outside, the obsession with Gilmore Girls and using Rory as my study inspiration, and the motivation I have at the beginning of the semester (we will see how long this lasts!)

a feral, green it-girl album has taken over 2024’s summer

From what I have gathered from being chronically online, is that the part girl eras come back, thanks to charli xcx sixth album ‘brat’. On TikTok over the past two or so months, all I have come across is people lipsynching and dancing to the ‘iconic’ song ‘apple’ and captioning their video ‘it’s a brat girl summer’. Seems pretty iconic and can influence a more powerful generation of women to come about. However, when I first stumbled upon the album’s name, I wondered whether this is a positive effect on the generation.

When I search the noun ‘brat’ into the dictionary, this is what comes up: ‘a child who typically behaves badly’ and the example given to us is ‘this girl is acting like a spoilt brat’ which is obviously emitting negative connotations. I decided to dig deeper into this appeal of being a brat, when I stumbled across an article whereby they began naming examples of ‘brats’. One of them being Veruca Salt - one of the spoilt children who used ‘daddy’s money’ to see the infamous Chocolate Factory. As viewers, Roald Dahl made us despise her character and believe she had it coming, when the squirrels pulled her down the chute (I really hope you all know what I’m on about). So, how has society gone from morally hating ‘brats’, to wanting to be one and thinking it’s a compliment if you are one.

Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m here for the rise in powerful, confident, out-spoken women we are delighted to be incounting more and more, however I don’t believe in becoming bratty people. As Roald Dahl once said ‘A person who has good thoughts can never be ugly’ and his creation of a bratty character who ended up down a chute portrays to us that brats aren;t good people. As a society, the biggest social glow up I can imagine, is if everyone became a good person.

By all means though, stay iconic, but don’t take this as becoming a bad person. Stay grateful and humble.

The best thing in the world is to be kind.
