When we get to Mars, what will we build our homes with?

For centuries, human beings have dreamt of leaving Earth.

From the cosmic journeys imagined in the Yoga Vasistha to Jules Verne’s adventures and today’s increasingly concrete ambitions of returning to the Moon and travelling to Mars, the question has remained remarkably persistent:

Could we ever live somewhere other than Earth?

But beneath all the grand visions of rockets, astronauts and interplanetary travel lies a surprisingly practical problem.

Once we get there, where exactly are we going to live?

We cannot simply load a rocket with enough cement, steel and bricks to construct a neighbourhood on Mars. Transporting construction materials across millions of kilometres would be unimaginably expensive and difficult.

The answer may lie in something much closer to the ground.

The Moon and Mars are covered in regolith (the loose layer of dust, soil and fragmented rock) on their surfaces. Around the world, scientists and engineers are exploring how these local materials could be transformed into structures, allowing future inhabitants to build with what is already available at their destination.

In other words:

If we’re going to build a home on another planet, we may have to make the bricks after we arrive.

And that brings us to Space Bricks.

Going extra-terrestrial with Space Bricks

For our 100th lecture, we are delighted to host Dr. Aloke Kumar, Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, whose work spans space technology and fluid mechanics.

Aloke completed his doctoral work at Purdue University in the United States and subsequently held the Canada Research Chair at the University of Alberta. In 2017, he made the decision to return to India and establish his laboratory at IISc with a clear mission: to do world-class science on Indian soil.

Appropriately enough, some of that science now asks a rather extraordinary question:

Could soil from another world help us build humanity’s next home?

Aloke is also the co-founder of QOSMIC, a deep-tech space technology startup incubated at IISc. An astronomer at heart and an astrophotography enthusiast when he isn’t in the laboratory, he will take us through the science behind Space Bricks, the current state of the technology and the immense engineering challenge of extraterrestrial habitation.

A home beyond Earth?

There is something wonderfully human about this particular problem.

We have spent centuries looking up at the Moon and planets, wondering what might be out there.

Now, increasingly, we are beginning to ask a different question:

What would it take to stay?

To build something that lasts and that provides shelter. To transform an unfamiliar landscape into a place we can inhabit.

Perhaps the next great chapter of human exploration will begin with making a brick.

And so, for our 100th lecture, we’re celebrating this milestone by travelling across the space!

Being a fan these days can mean identity, community, loyalty. And sometimes, power too.

For our upcoming lecture, we’re putting a critical lens on fandom in all its forms.

Tamil film star Vijay’s recent entry into electoral politics has once again drawn attention to the extraordinary relationship between fandom and politics in southern India. But this is far from a uniquely Tamil phenomenon. From N.T. Rama Rao's remarkable political crossover in Andhra Pradesh to Rajkumar fans participating in Kannada identity politics, fans have long demonstrated that admiration can spill far beyond cinema.

K-pop fans have mobilised online for political causes. Fans of the Harry Potter world have turned against the creators they once celebrated. Political campaigns across the world increasingly display behaviours we might otherwise associate with celebrity fandom.

So, what exactly turns someone from an admirer into a fan?

What makes fandom so powerful? What do political fandoms have in common with sports, film and pop-culture fandoms? And when does collective passion become collective power, and when does it become dangerous?

In this lecture, we will take a critical lens on one of the least critically examined forces shaping culture and public life today.

Because sometimes, the fans are more powerful than the people they are fans of.

About the Speaker

S.V. Srinivas is a professor at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru. His research focusses on the intersections between cultural industries, fan cultures and mass politics.

He is the author of two books on south Indian cinema: Megastar: Chiranjeevi and Telugu Cinema after N.T. Rama Rao (Oxford University Press, 2009) and Politics as Performance: A Social History of the Telugu Cinema (Permanent Black, 2013).

He has also written on the circulation of Hong Kong and South Korean films in India, and Indian films in Japan.

About the Lecture

Most biological processes rely on cellular movement and response — wounds close, muscles adapt, blood flows, and fractures heal. Cells constantly sense, process, and adapt to external physical stresses.

When these mechanisms fail, disease follows: cancer cells metastasize, lungs undergo fibrosis, and arteries build up plaque.

In this talk, Professor Namrata Gundiah will explore the cellular world through the lens of a mechanical engineer. She will discuss how cells respond to mechanical forces, why these physical interactions matter, and how mechanics can help us understand, and potentially influence, health and disease outcomes.

About the Speaker

Namrata Gundiah is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

Her research explores the interface between mechanics and biology across multiple length scales, from nonlinear tissue mechanics to cell–substrate interactions.

She earned her Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in Mechanical Engineering, and joined IISc after completing postdoctoral research at the University of California, San Francisco.

Birds arrive in our lives either quite early, if we’re lucky to have parents who love nature. Or otherwise, mostly somewhere in our mid-thirties, when we are financially somewhat settled and we don’t need to put our heads into laptops day and night to survive and our ears are headphones-free while walking out.

It arrived in our lives latter. We were introduced to it through a book, the extremely well-written birding classic Kenn Kaufman’s Kingbird Highway. A book that doesn’t romanticise birds but just romances them.

It changed the way how we looked at them, and it changed us. Earlier we’d travel for the place, now we travel for birds. Every new park, every lake now has an element of music in them. We tune into not only the rustling leaves, the swishing winds, but also the birdsongs. Calls of barbets, trills of kingfishers, hoots of owls, chatter of parakeets. Armed with the app Merlin and a couple of good binoculars, we become pilgrims of the gods living up in the trees. We have learnt how to walk looking up without falling.

As birders, we were introduced to the birds of Bangalore by our next lecturer, Dr. Ashwin Vishwanathan. He took us on a morning hike to this quaint little hill next to Nandi Hills called Dibbagiri. Unlike the pandemonium at Nandi, Dibbagiri was quiet like a prayer hall. And we managed to spot 49 species, including Tawny Eagle, Rock Eagle Owl, Jerdon's Bushlark, Rose-ringed Parakeet among others.

This Saturday, we’re getting into the world of birds with Ashwin. Birder, naturalist and ecologist, he’s joining us for a Pint of View lecture on why we watch birds, what birdwatching can teach us, and how a simple hobby can become a powerful way of understanding and protecting the natural world.

About the Lecture

Birdwatching is one of the world’s most popular ways of connecting with nature. But what is it about birds that draws so many of us in?

What begins as an attempt to identify a bird can quickly turn into something much more: a way of exploring new places, meeting people, and paying closer attention to the world around us.

In India, birdwatching has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years, particularly among young people. Regional groups, citizen-science platforms such as eBird, and tools such as Merlin have made birds more accessible than ever.

Millions of observations collected by birdwatchers are now helping us understand where birds occur, how their populations are changing, and where conservation action is needed.

This lecture explores the many reasons we watch birds, from curiosity, wonder, competition and mindfulness to travel, education and citizen science. And along the way, we’ll look at how birdwatching can grow from a simple hobby into a powerful way of understanding and protecting the natural world.

About the Speaker

Dr. Ashwin Viswanathan is a mechanical engineer turned ecologist, and a long-time naturalist and birdwatcher.

In his early research, he studied plant biology. He later became increasingly fascinated by the power of public participation in science.

His research now focuses on monitoring bird populations in India, primarily via nationwide birdwatcher groups and citizen science.

He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from ETH Zurich and is a scientist at the Nature Conservation Foundation.

We studied the Universe through light: the stars we could see, the galaxies we could photograph, the faint radiation travelling across unimaginable distances to reach our telescopes.

Then, a century after Einstein predicted their existence, we found another way to observe the cosmos. We learned to listen.

Gravitational waves are tiny ripples in spacetime. They are produced by some of the most violent events in the Universe, including the mergers of black holes and neutron stars. By detecting these ripples, scientists can observe cosmic events that may be invisible to ordinary telescopes.

And in just a decade, hundreds of gravitational-wave signals have transformed our understanding of the cosmos and opened an entirely new era of astronomy.

For our upcoming lecture, we’re joined by P. Ajith, astrophysicist at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru, and a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration since 2004.

About the lecture

One of the most remarkable scientific discoveries of this century is the detection of gravitational waves—tiny ripples in spacetime predicted by Albert Einstein over a century ago.

Even Einstein occasionally doubted whether they existed in nature, and he never imagined that they would one day be detected. Their discovery has opened an entirely new way of exploring the Universe, allowing us to observe spectacular cosmic events such as the mergers of black holes and neutron stars. In just a decade, hundreds of gravitational-wave signals have transformed our understanding of the cosmos and launched a new era of astronomy.

This lecture will tell the story of this extraordinary discovery, and explore the exciting future of this rapidly growing field.

About the speaker

P. Ajith is an astrophysicist at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bengaluru, where he studies gravitational-wave physics and astrophysics. He has been a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration since 2004 and has contributed to the effort to detect and understand gravitational waves.

His research spans the modelling of gravitational-wave sources, analysis and interpretation of gravitational-wave data, tests of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, gravitational lensing of gravitational waves, and the astrophysics of black holes and neutron stars.

Ajith completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in 2007 and subsequently worked as a postdoctoral scholar there and at Caltech. He is now professor at ICTS, where he is part of the Astrophysical Relativity Group.

About the Speaker

Mohit Satyanand studied Economics at the Delhi School of Economics before creating Crax, India’s first successful homegrown snack food brand. Today, he is the Chairman and Co-Founder of Teamwork Arts, the organisation behind the Jaipur Literature Festival, and Managing Partner at Magic Mountain Investments.

Yet, beyond his work, one passion has remained constant: travel. From backpacking across Europe in the 1970s to making a home in the Himalayas, Mohit has spent decades exploring the world, not to escape life, but to better understand it. Along the way, every journey has offered him a new perspective on the world, and on himself.

About the Lecture

When we are static, our selves become part of our background. Our homes reflect who we are, and over time, it becomes difficult to separate ourselves from the work, places and routines that surround us.

Travel has a way of disrupting that familiarity.

For Mohit, some of his deepest and most abiding learnings have come when he was liberated from the familiar and placed among people and places that forced him to recalibrate. As a schoolboy in the Himalayas, he had his first glimpse into the nature of religion. In a Youth Hostel in Venice in 1977, he had an acute insight into his own attitude towards risk and insecurity. Later that summer, in Istanbul, he encountered deprivation in a way that stayed with him.

Fifty years later, he still wanders.

In this lecture, Mohit invites us to peek into the “bioscope” of his travels with his self: the places that changed his perspective, the strangers and companions who shaped his journeys, and the distance travel creates between us and the places we call home.

Because sometimes, you have to leave home to see yourself clearly.

Television news is driven by TRPs and the race for attention. Digital newsrooms compete for clicks, shares and algorithmic visibility. Meanwhile, independent publications are increasingly asking their readers to pay for journalism.

The News Minute is one such example. Its reader-funded model raises a bigger question: if readers don’t pay for journalism, who does? And when someone else pays the bills, how much does that influence the journalism we get?

A story that takes weeks to investigate is unlikely to compete with outrage that can be produced in minutes. But journalism that holds power to account often needs exactly that time, money and independence.

What does a city’s history look like when you tell it through its cars?

Before Bangalore became the city of tech parks, traffic and flyovers, it was a city where automobiles were still a novelty. Cars and two-wheelers slowly became part of its streets, its industries, its public celebrations and, eventually, its culture.

Next Saturday, we’re taking a ride through that history with T.R. Raghunandan, classic automobile collector, restorer, steam railway enthusiast and industrial heritage archivist.

The lecture begins with the world of automobile enthusiasm: why people across the world fall in love with old machines, and what keeps the hobby alive. From there, we come to Bangalore, starting at MG Road and moving outward through the city’s changing relationship with automobiles.

We’ll travel through the arrival of cars and two-wheelers, the rise of automotive racing, automobiles in state celebrations, the evolution of the automobile industry around Bangalore and the story of public transport.

And then, we get our hands dirty.

Raghunandan will share stories from the world of automobile restoration: hunting for impossible-to-find parts, attempting improbable restorations and the occasional mishap. There will also be a deep dive into the evolution of Karnataka’s vehicle registration system.

Finally, we take to the open road. Because for anyone who restores old cars, a long-distance drive is perhaps the ultimate test of whether the restoration actually worked.

It’s a lecture about cars, but also about a city, its streets and the machines that have moved through them.

About the lecturer

T.R. Raghunandan is a classic automobile collector and restorer, steam railway enthusiast, industrial heritage archivist and scale model maker. He is the Secretary of the Karnataka Vintage and Classic Car Club and the co-founder of the Avantika Foundation, which works on heritage conservation. He is also behind the Museum of Movement, a rural museum celebrating the romance of transportation in India.

A former IAS officer, Raghunandan spent 27 years in the Indian Administrative Service before leaving in 2010 to pursue his interests in strengthening local democracy, local governments and anti-corruption. He now works as an international consultant, trainer and author on decentralisation, anti-corruption and heritage conservation.

A raconteur and occasional stand-up comedian on governance, he brings together a lifelong fascination with machines, movement, history and public life.

Here’s a question that might ruin your next dinner conversation:

Is taste really yours?

You know which restaurants you’ll happily spend ₹2,000 at and which ones you’d never enter. You know which music feels sophisticated, which clothes look elegant, which art feels pretentious and which food is simply not for you.

Taste feels intimate, almost instinctive. But where did all those instincts come from?

They’re not your invention. You inherited some of it. You picked up some from your family. Some from your friends. Some from school, films, Instagram, restaurants and the people you wanted to be like.

And some of it may have been shaped by things much older and much bigger than you.

Caste. Class. Gender. Migration. Labour. History. Power.

Think about food.

Why is one kind of food described as “traditional” while another is called “working-class cuisine”? Why do some ingredients become fashionable once they appear on an expensive restaurant menu? Why do certain ways of eating become markers of sophistication while others are treated as embarrassing?

Or think about clothes.

Who taught us what looks “professional”? Why does one accent sound “educated” and another “rough”? Why do some homes feel tasteful while others are described as tacky? Why do we call certain music timeless and other music guilty pleasure?

These judgments can feel like personal preferences.

But they can also be social knowledge we have learned so thoroughly that we experience it as instinct.

That is the rabbit hole we’re digging in our next Pint of View lecture:

Interdisciplinary theatre artist Sri Vamsi Matta will take us through sociology, history, art, theatre, memory, food and popular culture to explore taste as something much more complicated than personal preference.

Vamsi’s own practice is deeply engaged with caste, political memory and everyday life. His participatory performance Come Eat With Me, which examines caste through food and shared meals, has travelled across India, the United States and Australia.

In this lecture, he turns that same curiosity towards ordinary things: how recipes become archives, objects become evidence and everyday habits become texts.

And suddenly, the things sitting quietly around us start telling stories about who we are, where we come from and who gets to decide what is considered valuable.

Because perhaps the interesting question is simply: “How did you learn to like it?” instead of “What do you like?”

Perhaps that is what makes taste so interesting. It sits at the junction of the personal and the political.

Your weather app tells you the AQI. But it doesn’t tell you what’s actually in the air.

That single number could represent smoke from traffic emissions, fumes from an industrial chimney, particles from someone smoking a cigarette outside your café or even a wildfire. We tend to call all of it smoke. Chemistry doesn't.

And that's exactly what our upcoming Pint of View lecture is about.

A cigarette, a kitchen stove, a forest fire and a car’s exhaust all produce smoke, but each carries a completely different chemical cocktail. At the nanoscale, even a particle’s surface determines how it behaves, making every plume of smoke a unique piece of chemistry.

So how do scientists make sense of something this complicated?

With AI.

AI that sifts through thousands of real pollution samples to uncover chemical patterns humans would almost certainly miss.

Instead of simply telling scientists whether pollution is harmful, machine learning is helping answer a far more interesting question:

Which combinations of chemicals become especially dangerous when they occur together?

It’s helping us understand not just that pollution is harmful, but why.

Meet our speaker

This Wednesday, we’re joined by Dr. Aahana Ganguly, Professor of Chemistry at Azim Premji University.

Before joining academia, she worked as a regulatory scientist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), developing safety frameworks for nanomedicine. She completed her PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science at Princeton University, and now studies how nanoparticles trigger oxidative stress and lung toxicity.

Some animals spend their lives trying to be noticed.

Others survive by making sure they’re never seen at all.

Why?

Is evolution simply a series of random accidents that happened to work out? Or is there a deeper logic behind every colour, every feather, every elaborate display and every careful disguise?

On Sunday, 9th August, we’re delighted to welcome Prof. Maria Thaker, Professor at the Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), for a lecture that explores one of biology’s most fascinating questions.

In this lecture, Prof. Thaker takes us through the remarkable forces that shape life on Earth.

Why are some animals extravagantly colourful while others are drab? Why do some species boldly advertise themselves while others disappear into their surroundings? How much of evolution is driven by function, and how much is shaped by chance?

As it turns out, the answers lie in an unlikely trio: sex, danger and randomness.

Through stories from across the animal kingdom, Prof. Thaker will unpack how mate choice, predators, environmental pressures and the unpredictability of evolution have produced the astonishing diversity of forms and behaviours we see today. Evolution, she argues, is both purposeful and fickle. It rewards adaptation, but it is also full of accidents, detours and beautiful surprises.

About the Speaker

Prof. Thaker’s own research explores exactly these questions. Her lab studies how ecology and evolutionary history shape the behaviour, physiology and appearance of animals, from why frogs and lizards are so colourful to how wildlife responds to stress, urbanisation and climate change. By understanding how animals cope with an increasingly human-shaped world, her work also helps us understand which species are likely to thrive and which may need our help.

Some weeks ask us to pause and pay closer attention. This is one of them.

Pint of View has always been about making sense of the world through conversation. Right now, the world outside our lecture rooms calls for even more of our attention. It’s time to turn our education into action.

Our Bangalore chapter will be on a short break from 21st July to 7th August. We plan to resume from 8th August, and all lectures currently listed will go ahead as planned unless we announce otherwise.

Most birders begin the same way.

But sometimes, stories begin after the bird has flown away. What if the feather it leaves behind can tell you where it lived, how it flew, who it was trying to attract, what it was hiding from and millions of years of evolution that shaped it?

We know how feathers are an engineering marvel. They’re insulation, waterproofing, camouflage, communication and flight packed into a structure so intricate that scientists still study its microscopic architecture.

To a trained eye, a single feather can reveal the species it belonged to, its age, where it sat on the bird’s body and sometimes even clues about the bird’s life.

Meet Our Speaker, Esha Munshi

Few people in India know feathers as intimately as Esha Munshi. Originally trained as an architect, she left the profession after 13 years to pursue a lifelong fascination with birds. Today, she’s the founder of the Feather Library, an extraordinary initiative dedicated to collecting, documenting, digitising and conserving feathers and other avian specimens from birds that have died naturally or reached wildlife rescue centres.

The collection, with over 135 species documented, is housed at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), where it supports scientific research, education and conservation.

Esha’s work goes far beyond feathers. She’s been a birdwatcher and citizen scientist for over a decade, contributes bird sound recordings to the Merlin Bird ID app, trained in ornithology at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and has studied feather microstructure at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

In other words, when Esha picks up a feather, she sees an entire world.

About the Lecturer

Sandeep Menon is a journalist, author and educator based in Bengaluru. An automobile engineer by training, he spent over a decade as a sports correspondent with Deccan Herald, The Times of India and Deccan Chronicle, while also writing on culture, gender, cinema and music. He is the co-founder of Injury Time, one of India’s oldest podcasts dedicated to Indian football.

He currently serves as Senior Editorial Manager at the Office of Communications at the Indian Institute of Science, while teaching as a guest lecturer at various institutions and writing for multiple publications.

His first book, Out of the Blue: Bengaluru FC’s 10-Year Odyssey, chronicled the history of Bengaluru FC and was published in April 2025.

His latest book, Sacred Grounds: A Journey Through People’s Football in India, explores the many football cultures that thrive across the country, examining how the sport intersects with geography, religion, politics and everyday life.

Prof. Arvind Ayyer is a mathematician and physicist at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, where he is Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Associate Faculty in the Department of Physics and Convenor of the IISc Mathematics Initiative.

His research spans probability, combinatorics, statistical physics and mathematical physics. Broadly, his work uses mathematics to study complex systems, randomness and the surprising patterns that emerge from them.

He holds a PhD in Physics from Rutgers University and an Integrated MSc in Physics from IIT Kanpur.

He is also a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India.

If you’ve ever stopped to admire a tree in Bangalore, wondered what all it has seen, or simply felt grateful for the shade above your head, this one’s for you.

The trees in our city can tell us quite a lot, it turns out.

This Sunday, join us for an afternoon walk through Bangalore’s past and present, told through the trees that have watched time go by and the ones growing around us today.

And we mean way back.

Ancient trees grew here when the land that would become Bangalore was in the southern hemisphere. Those trees were eventually fried crisp by streams of lava. That lava cooled, the land lifted nearly 900 metres high, rainforests arrived and retreated as the climate changed, and dry forests took their place.

Thousands of years later, the first Bangaloreans lived in the shade of fire-resistant trees. Humans settled this elevated karu nadu, clearing land for agriculture while also bringing trees from faraway places. Over time, many of these foreign trees became familiar.

Kingdoms came and went. Empire arrived. The State kept planting. And slowly, Bangalore became home to one of the most fascinating collections of trees you could walk past without ever knowing their stories.

🌳 The trees of today’s Bangalore tell a different story too.

Jaali trees defy our cynicism and cling on. Trema orientalis and Singapore cherry seem to A/B test their way into niches we don’t yet fully understand. Madagascar almonds and Buttonwoods define manicured pockets between tall buildings, while mango, chickoo and jackfruit complete our collective caricature of “old Bangalore”.

And then there’s the future of Bangalore’s trees: exciting and precarious in equal measure.

This won’t be a lecture where the subject sits quietly on a PowerPoint slide. Akshay will be bringing many twigs, branches, leaves, seeds (maybe even some fungus) of the trees he will be talking about.

Expect a tactile, visual and sometimes even a culinary experience. And if you promise to give them some tough love, you may even leave with seeds of your own. 🌱

About the Speaker

Dr. Akshay Surendra is an ecologist interested in how wild plants, and sometimes animals, interact with one another, and what those interactions mean for big questions around diversity, conservation and forest management.

He has studied trees and lived among them in the rainforests of Sri Lanka, the Andaman Islands and the Western Ghats.

Akshay is currently visiting faculty in Environmental Studies at Ashoka University and a data curator at Nature Conservation Foundation India. He completed his PhD at Yale University.

This week at Pint of View, economist Dr. Anand Shrivastava introduces us to the fascinating world of game theory, the science of strategic decision-making.

Why do countries go to war when peace would leave everyone better off? Why do nuclear powers continue to stockpile weapons they hope never to use? And why does the first driver to blink lose?

From the Cold War to today’s shifting world order, this lecture explores how incentives, uncertainty and strategy shape the choices made by nations, militaries and even ordinary people. About the Speaker

Dr. Anand Shrivastava is Associate Professor of Economics at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Academic Office.

His doctoral research focused on the economics of conflict, and his work has since expanded to labour economics, economics of networks, and the intersections of economics with religion, politics and history. His current research examines higher education and the use of artificial intelligence in education.

He holds a PhD in Economics, an MPhil in Economic Research and a Graduate Diploma in Economics from the University of Cambridge. Before becoming an economist, he studied mechanical engineering at IIT Madras and even worked in factories producing instant coffee.

Dear Physics Nerds,

Exactly a hundred years ago, in 1926, Erwin Schrödinger wrote an equation that transformed our understanding of the universe.

Before long, it became the foundation of quantum mechanics, revealing a microscopic world unlike anything human intuition had prepared us for. Electrons behaved like waves. Particles occupied multiple possibilities. Entangled objects seemed connected across vast distances. The deeper scientists looked, the stranger nature became.

A century later, Schrödinger’s equation continues to shape the frontiers of science. It underpins the quest for quantum computers, ultra-secure communication, and new ways of understanding matter itself. Every breakthrough brings us closer to technologies once confined to science fiction, while raising even bigger questions about the universe we inhabit.

Can an electron pass through two slits at the same time? Does the Moon exist if nobody is looking at it? Could a cat be both alive and dead? Quantum mechanics doesn’t just ask these questions. It compels us to take them seriously.

Abstract

The world of microscopic objects, of which our universe is made, is a mysterious world. Here, objects can be at multiple places or occupy different forms at the same time. There can even be pairs of objects that have seemingly fictional properties, such as entanglement, in which just the act of observation of either one of them can instantaneously affect the other, a spooky action at a distance as Albert Einstein had called it. This is the field of quantum physics which is one of the most precisely tested theories in the history of science and the backbone of much of the technological progress we see today. Developments in the field are helping us realize cutting-edge systems such as quantum computers, non-hackable and absolutely secure communication systems, and teleportation. All this while uncovering the very fabric of reality.

The talk will walk you through and provide a glimpse of this mind-blowing field of science. Enter this world of counterintuitive facts where science fiction is being turned into reality.

The talk will be steered by questions such as “Does the moon exist if you are not looking at it?”, “can a cat be dead and alive at the same time?”, and “can an electron simultaneously pass through two holes?”, ultimately reminding us that the universe is not just an assembly of independent, solid objects, but a breathtaking, undivided whole where reality is defined by what and how we choose to measure.

Short Bio

Professor Krishna Thyagarajan is a physicist, author, and science educator whose career spans more than four decades. He was former professor of physics at IIT Delhi.

His research has been primarily focussed in the areas of optical fibre communication and quantum physics. He is the author of more than ten internationally acclaimed textbooks, over 175 research papers, and has created 73 nationally acclaimed physics education videos on quantum electronics and electromagnetism accessible to students across India. He has held visiting scientist positions at leading institutions in the United States, France, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, and Poland.

In 2003 he was decorated with the title of “Officier dans l’ordre des Palmes Académiques” by the French Government — one of France’s highest honours for contributions to education and culture — and has received recognition from the governments of India and the United States as well as major industrial organisations. His most recent book, Integrated Quantum Photonics (Springer, 2025), is the first unified textbook in the field.

Apart from science, he is also interested in philosophy and arts. His hobbies include reading nonfiction science books on various topics such as the intelligence of plants and animals, history of mathematics, connections between brain, mind and consciousness, and practising the art of origami folding.

In his talk he hopes to share some of his excitement in quantum physics and bring out the mysterious nature of quantum reality.

We’re delighted to host one of the most exciting speakers we ever met.

Our next speaker, Siddharth Agarwal, after graduating from IIT Kharagpur in 2015, set himself on a rather wild mission. He decided to walk upstream along the length of Ganga. Most times like a bhikshu, he survived on the kindness of strangers, and took six months to cover Ganga from the Sundarbans all the way to Gangotri.

The result was this remarkable learning of how rivers dance, how its banks keep shifting, how villages alongside keep getting erased and rebuilding themselves at some place and how livelihoods change. And in the process he discovered the sand nexus that is strip mining most rivers, rendering them more wild and violent.

He set up Veditum and India Sand Watch and now offers fellowships to people to walk along a river and document people and the sand. 7 rivers of India have been walked and built relationships with, while 100s have been mapped so far.

Siddharth in this lecture takes us through this wild journey of shifting rivers and the people benefitting and getting displaced by them.

Siddharth Agarwal has been walking across India and along India’s rivers, attempting to document and bring stories of marginalised communities and the environment into the mainstream.

Since 2014, he has walked 6000+ kms, including the lengths of the rivers Ganga and Ken. He is the founder of Veditum India Foundation, where he is working to transform the environmental governance landscape in India.

The organisation, Veditum, has overseen long documentation and sensing expeditions of over 7000 kms along 7 different rivers in India. These stories, captured as part of the Moving Upstream project and Fellowship, have been distributed widely and brought significant attention to the cause of these rivers.

Through the India Sand Watch project, Veditum is introducing accountability in the river sand mining sector in India. Through the Kolkata Change Makers initiative, they are creating a space for deep explorations in changemaking for and from the city.

About the Lecture

If you say the words “sand mining” to anyone in India, there’s a high chance that in the next few lines they’ll use the phrase “sand mafia.” But what really is this “mafia” and how does it operate?

For most people, sand is an inert substance with no relation to living things. But this product of millions of years of geo-hydrological processes forms the very basis of life in our rivers. As India accelerates on its developmental journey, we are extracting millions of tonnes of sand annually from India’s rivers for construction. Most of it is illegally extracted.

Not only does this extraction, with its scale and methods, destroy ecosystems, it also creates social challenges, direct harm to citizens, and thousands of crores in losses to the economy.

How does one build a public accountability system for this destructive network that is distributed across thousands of locations and protected by power and language? This talk explores the creation of a data-driven mirror that pierces these nebulous shields.

Rukmini S. is one of India’s foremost data storytellers. She is the Founder and Director of Data For India, a platform dedicated to making Indian data more accessible and understandable through research-backed analysis and visualisation.

She is the author of the award-winning Whole Numbers and Half Truths: What Data Can and Cannot Tell Us About Modern India. Previously, she served as Data Editor at The Hindu, where she helped pioneer data-driven journalism in India. Rukmini holds an MSc in Development Studies from SOAS University of London, and is a Non-Resident Fellow at the Centre for the Advanced Study of India at the University of Pennsylvania.

If you’ve ever stood in front of an MF Husain painting and wondered why horses appear again and again, this lecture is for you.

But instead of beginning with Husain, artist Namrata Arjun starts somewhere unexpected: Linda Nochlin’s seminal 1971 essay Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists? One of the most influential texts in feminist art history, it asks a deceptively simple question that fundamentally changed how we think about artistic greatness.

From there, the lecture traces a remarkable journey through Western art history, from prehistoric cave paintings and the Venus of Willendorf to the Renaissance and Impressionism, before arriving at Husain’s iconic horses. Along the way, it explores the institutions, histories, and cultural influences that shape not just great art, but the very idea of who gets remembered as a great artist.

About the Speaker

Namrata Arjun is a painter whose work reorients memory and art history through autobiographical and neurodivergent perspectives. They hold an MFA in Painting from Bard College, New York, and have exhibited at India Art Fair, Delhi Contemporary Art Week, Dhi Contemporary, and BluePrint12. Their work is part of the permanent collection of Bangalore International Airport Ltd., and they have worked with the Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) and the Devi Art Foundation.
