Some of us are quite happy living a life "free" of consequence, acting without worry of being judged for being who we are. Then there are others, aware of the world around them, familiar with feeling, who won’t settle for anything short of liberation for everyone, not just a “freed” few.

Naturally, some will say, "There has to be consequence! You can’t have lawless living." To that I say: thank you for proving my point.

If your imagination can only frame consequence around breaking or following law, you’re in that first group. You have work to do, and I’m not here to carry your social responsibility. But if your lived experience is one of restricted freedom, I see you. I hear you. We are in this together.

Before armor, before the walls of institutions locked us in and before national pride (borders), we had the circle. Our ancestors gathered in it, told stories, broke bread, and shared what they had with whoever was in need. Theirs was a way of being that made everyone feel welcomed, seen, and known. This way of being was along the way, partly because we were lied to and told our survival demanded it, partly because we let it go despite knowing better. Systems, good and bad alike, force us to abandon connection for control promised but never delivered.

Inherited Narratives

Many of us were handed armor (what the world sees us when they look at us) we never asked for. Armor that told us community should be quiet, that care should be conditional, that belonging was earned rather than inherent. Armor that taught us to value appearances over presence, rules over relationships, and performance over trust. These are the inherited stories of control, hierarchy, and division that shape how we have come to see ourselves and to see others.

To reclaim our humanity, we have to find our way back to the circle.

Rhythm as survival. For Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, this is not a metaphor. It is how we live.

Wherever we find ourselves, we know the body remembers things that place can’t always hold.

Rhythm becomes a way of knowing.

Shaped by Black and Brown memory. African pulse. Indigenous grounding. Histories that survived erasure.

Diaspora Rhythm carries what history, time, and colonizer could not erase. It carries us.

What does it mean to carry a soul that has never been allowed to fully belong?

For Puerto Ricans, this is not an abstract question. It is history, policy, migration, and memory all together. It is the knowing that wherever we stand, whether it be San Juan, the Bronx, Orlando, Chicago, DC or somewhere in between; we are always here and elsewhere. Always present, and yet always reaching out.

In the reaching out is where diaspora spirituality begins. Not in institutions. Not in buildings. But in the body.

It lives in the way music becomes prayer way before words ever form. In the way food becomes memory, and memory becomes resistance. In the way we gather on stoops, in bodegas, kitchens, and on city blocks. This is where the sacred grows without needing permission or language to legitimize it.

For a colonized people, spirituality cannot afford to be fragile or location-dependent. It must be portable. It must survive gentrification. It must endure the violence of being told, again and again, that where you come from is not enough, and where you are will never fully be yours.

So it adapts. But beloved, please here me out, adaptation is not surrender.

Diaspora spirituality isn’t a diluted version of something once pure. It is a deepening through mixture. It holds African rhythms, Indigenous memory (Taino), and imposed European forms. And yet, it still refuses to be defined by any one of them. It is shaped by contradiction. It does not resolve tension; it learns how to live inside it. This learning to live is what colonization could not erase. It is the ability to make meaning out of what has been broken.

To be Puerto Rican in the diaspora is to inherit a spiritual instinct that says: holiness is not confined to sanctioned spaces. It shows up in movement.

In improvisation.

In survival.

In defiant joy.

It resists the binaries imposed by both colonizer and institution: sacred/secular, here/there, pure/mixed. It knows those categories were never built for us anyway. Instead, it asks different questions: Where is life happening? Where is dignity being reclaimed? Where are people becoming whole? And wherever those questions find answers, that is where the sacred is.

From a Puerto Rican perspective, a perspective shaped by colonial status and mass migration, spirituality cannot be about returning to an untouched origin. There is no untouched origin. The island itself is layered with conquest, resistance, adaptation, and survival. So the goal is not return. The goal is something deeper than place.

Diaspora spirituality is the ability to recognize that even in displacement, we are not disconnected. We carry the island not in nostalgia (although there is nothing wrong with that), but practice and in how we show up for one another. In how we refuse isolation. In how we make space for grief without letting it have the final word.

Diaspora spirituality does not deny loss. It names the losses clearly. The loss of land, of political agency, of stability, and of continuity. But, it also refuses to let loss define the entirety of the story. And what emerges is unconfined, improvisational, and communal. It does not need to be centered in power to be real. And maybe that is the subversion at the heart of it all: that a people shaped by displacement have cultivated a presence that cannot be displaced.

Walking through mestizaje begins with a shift in how we understand identity. Instead of trying to make sense of ourselves as something fixed or pure, we start by naming what is already true. Our lives are shaped by mixture. History, culture, language, and belief come together in ways that are not easy to separate. Mestizaje gives language to that reality. It names the tension and the possibility of being formed by more than one story at the same time. Shit, it opens the door to dancing to rhythm of our natural dissonance.

When we pay attention to the words and ways of our ancestors, we see a people who moved within that kind of reality. They did not stay contained in one space, socially, culturally, or religiously. They were always crossing boundaries. They were always going toward people who have been labeled outsiders at best, or less than at worst. They touched those who were avoided. They shared meals with those, who were and still are, dismissed. They listened to people who were not supposed to be heard.

When they did this, they were not simply including people. They were challenging the system that created those divisions in the first place. They exposed the separation and control. They shifted the focus. What was stayed away from becomes the place where healing begins. What is pushed aside becomes central. Mestizaje re-centers the story. We back, baby! WE must pick up where our ancestors left off. Palante, siempre palante.3

Pretense is the quiet performance we learn to survive, shaping us to appear composed and acceptable while rewarding polish over presence. Over time, it blurs with who we are. To live without pretense is not recklessness but the refusal to live divided, aligning inner life and outward expression with integrity rather than fear. Living without pretense releases the need to impress and shifts focus from constructing an image to embodying what is real. In a world that prizes performance, living without pretense is resistance, rooted not in proving worth, but in living from it.

At some point, there was a change. I can’t tell you exactly when it happened, but I know it did.

I couldn’t point to a single moment when things began to move. There was no dramatic exit (okay, maybe there was). I started noticing that I was no longer moved by the things that, for a lot of people, used to define me. The old answers, the ones I had inherited from people not like me, felt too rehearsed. The systems I had relied on to give my life structure weren’t strong enough to hold the weight of the questions I was asking.

The change was quiet. It was more like a slow wearing away than a sudden collapse. I noticed how many people around me were exhausted. They were performing a role, maintaining an image, and showing up out of habit rather than a genuine desire to be there. I noticed how quick we were to talk and how slow we were to listen. Often, our words traveled much further than our actual lives did.

I wasn’t looking to burn things down. I didn’t lose my sense of purpose; I just lost my rhythm. What was supposed to feel familiar started to feel foreign. I couldn’t name what I was looking for, but I knew I needed something with more breathing room. I needed something rooted and real.

I stepped back from the routines that (I thought) once gave my life shape. I didn’t make an announcement. I just noticed how quiet everything became. My convictions didn’t disappear, but they outgrew my current limitations. What used to be public now felt personal. What used to be automatic now required intention. I didn’t stop caring about the big things. I just stopped feeling the need to be seen caring about them.

That season was hard. I felt displaced, like I was walking through a gentrified version of Gun Hill Projects. I spent months learning to be okay with not having an answer.

In that stillness, I started to pay attention. I didn’t look at what I had lost, but at what might be growing in its place, in the middle.

There is a deep discomfort in the middle. You have left where you were, but you haven’t arrived where you’re going. Liminal, know what I mean?

I felt liberated. I didn’t want to go back to the old ways of thinking, but I didn’t want to build something new. I wasn’t going to give up on being who I was, but I was too tired to keep forcing a version of myself that no longer worked.

I started asking better questions. Was I living in a way that aligned with what I believed about kindness, justice, and love? Was I making room for what actually matters in my real, daily life, or just in the parts people could see?

I realized how rarely we are taught how to handle the discomfort of transition. We are trained to look for certainty and push for conclusions. But growth isn’t a straight line. It’s a process of trial and error, full of false starts and edits.

Most days, I just kept moving, trusting that the effort was enough. Eventually, a sense of connection returned, but it didn’t look like it used to.

I didn’t sit down and decide to “start over.” It happened slowly. It came in moments of reflection, in deep conversations, and on long walks where I let myself feel the weight of life. It happened in the moments I spent just looking up at the sky.

It wasn’t a performance. It wasn’t polished. But it felt right.

Sometimes, that connection felt like a sigh. Sometimes it was completely silent. A few tears, some laughter, and a lot of stretches of quiet. It was honest, and that was enough.

I realized that what I was looking for had been there all along. I had just mistaken its silence for absence. I started to see my life not as a series of tasks, but as a way of being present. I wanted to be present to the world, to the people around me, and to myself.

What emerged from that quiet season wasn’t a new list of rules. It was a different way of being.
