They saw the skies as a message written by entities who were much older than the sea and even each star was meant to be obeyed. A comet dragging its tail across the dark, or a moon gone the color of blood, were treated as verdicts. A fleet could have the finest instruments of its age and still be convinced that something above had already decided its fate.

And the entire religious panic occurred aboard men who had dedicated years of their lives on training themselves to read wind and current. A seaman who would be comfortable reading the course through mist by gut instinct could still have the unexpected horizon appear and have that training splinter. Fear does this. After a crew started whispering that the gods were talking, the ship's ecelesiastical chain usually moved toward the interpreting seaman, not the best navigator, and that change of authority is where the trouble was likely to start.

This may be considered as the Navigator's Sin: the instant a commander decides to take his course per a sign rather than the real horizon before him. To place one's belief in a message originating from a higher power seems safer than relying upon a weak and fragile human reasoning when the whole crew is under extreme fear. The sad truth is, the horizon never tells a lie, while the sky can be interpreted as almost anything the frightened mind wants to see and history is full of navy fleets who realized that difference only after the water had already closed over them.

The Red Vineyard is set under a low autumn sun, you see rows of harvesters bent among leaves that are orange and red against a sky the color of pale butter. Vincent van Gogh painted this scene in Arles in November 1888, and the color alone feels like a refusal to let despair drain the world of its warmth. At night, Caravaggio wandered Rome’s taverns and backstreets with a rapier strapped to his side. He didn’t bother with the license the law required, and his temper flared fast, sometimes just over a lost bet or a card game. The authorities hauled him in more than a dozen times. Sometimes it was for carrying that illegal sword, sometimes for wilder stuff; like hurling a plate of artichokes in a waiter’s face after an argument about how they’d been cooked. Yet beneath all that, there was a very uncomfortable biological fact. A male body that has passed through puberty cannot produce that sound. A merchant class that had only recently climbed out of guild labor and modest trade into serious wealth needed a way to prove that wealth was earned through God’s favor and hard commerce rather than inherited excess, since the old aristocratic sin of vanity was still watching from the pulpit every Sunday. From the infinite scroll, to the notification ping developed by teams who study attention the way ancient poets studied longing, these are Sirens with better funding. Nobody scrolls for three hours because they decided it was a good use of an evening. The decision gets skipped entirely, the same way Odysseus’s men skipped the part where they weighed the danger. A dopamine loop and a siren song have the same structure, which is a promise wrapped around a hook.

What makes the Sirens genuinely unsettling is that the song was never really about them. Ancient commentators noted that each man who heard it seemed to hear something different, his own unfinished business set to music. The monster was reflecting back whatever specific hole existed in the listener’s life. That is a far more disturbing kind of danger than a pretty face on a rock. The Horror of Lost Agency

Odysseus was fully awake to what was happening to him. He knew the rocks meant death and he strained toward them anyway. That particular horror of watching yourself want the thing that will destroy you while some smaller part of your mind stands off to the side taking notes on the disaster, is scarier than any monster.

Psychologists have a name for a milder version of this feeling, the call of the void, that sudden flash of wondering what would happen if you jerked the wheel into oncoming traffic or stepped off the platform edge. Most people feel it once and never mention it again, getting relieved when it passes. It terrifies us so much because it exposes something we spend most of our lives ignoring, that the same mind keeping us alive also contains the exact blueprint for our own destruction.

Odysseus solved this problem with a piece of foresight that is still relevant today, he had his future compromised self restrained by his present clear-headed self before the danger arrived. That is the entire logic behind modern pre-commitment devices, the gambling addict who bans himself from the casino, the phone locked in a timed box before bed, and the drinker who hands his keys to a friend before the party starts. None of these work by strengthening willpower in the moment, because the moment is exactly when willpower fails. They work because someone made a decision early, while sober and honest, and built a structure sturdy enough to survive contact with a version of themselves who could no longer be trusted. Left unspoken and unexamined, internal pain tends to take exactly this shape, either eating a person slowly or swallowing them whole, and Homer gave both versions a body and a location so listeners could point at the strait and say there, that is what it feels like.

The tanning industry became one of the fiercest battlegrounds in this ongoing war over urban air and water, as tanners relied on urine, dung, and rotting animal matter to cure hides, producing a stench so severe that city officials repeatedly tried to banish the trade entirely to areas well outside the main city walls. There is something about Ophelia that painters could not leave alone. Shakespeare gave her very little, and yet she became one of the most painted figures of the entire nineteenth century. The reason has less to do with the play than with what she represented at a particular cultural moment. Victorian society was deeply invested in containing women within prescribed emotional registers, and Ophelia, tipping over the edge of all of them at once, offered painters a subject that was simultaneously sympathetic, erotic, and conveniently tragic.

What made her irresistible was the specific nature of her death. Drowning is a liminal act. Gertrude’s description of Ophelia sinking while still garlanded with flowers locked the image into something almost sacramental. This in-between state, neither fully alive nor grotesquely dead, gave painters exactly the emotional ambiguity they needed. The water softened everything, and the flowers provided a ready iconography of innocence cut short.

Death in the nineteenth century happened in the house where the family ate and slept. Infant mortality rates across Britain and America hovered at devastating levels throughout much of the 1800s. The bereaved washed the body and they stayed with it through the night. This proximity to the physical fact of death was a necessity, a way of metabolizing a loss that words could not yet reach.

Unlike skin, and everything else the body eventually surrenders, hair resists decomposition. A lock clipped from a dead child’s head in 1847 would remain chemically and structurally intact today, still with the exact color and curl it had in life. The Victorians knew this, even without the forensic science to explain it. Hair was the body’s most durable residue, the part of a person that refused to become past tense.

In the seconds and hours after a death, there is an instinct to hold something, to close the hand around some proof that the person was real and present. Hair became that proof in a way nothing else could. It could be braided, pressed under glass, worked into brooches, bracelets and memorial rings. What the Victorians created around this material was a set of craft traditions and social conventions designed to make grief portable, and in some sense communicable to the living world.

Black Enamel and Jet

Victorian mourning was a codified public performance, and the materials a grieving person wore announced their exact position within that performance to anyone who knew how to read them. In the first year after losing a spouse, a widow was expected to wear full mourning: matte black fabrics, no jewelry except pieces made entirely from jet or black enamel, and nothing decorative for its own sake. As months passed, the code relaxed in precise increments. Half-mourning introduced grey, lavender, and white, and allowed the reintroduction of certain metals. Appearing in the wrong materials too soon was a declaration that the grief was shallow.

Whitby Jet, quarried from the cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast, became the prestige material of Victorian mourning largely because of its qualities under a craftsman’s hand. It is fossilized wood, compressed over millions of years into a dense black that takes a high polish. The artisans of Whitby produced brooches, bracelets, lockets, and earrings with carved floral motifs, weeping figures, and inscriptions worked into surfaces no larger than a thumbnail. Black enamel had a parallel function in goldsmithing, allowing jewelers to cover rings and pendants in a flat, light-absorbing black. Both materials absorbed light rather than reflecting it, as though the piece itself was in a state of mourning.

What these objects accomplished socially was something close to a shared emotional dialect. A woman wearing a jet brooch containing a panel of hair beneath glass was telling anyone who saw her that she had lost someone, and that she intended to carry the person with her in a visible way. The pieces gave form to a state that had no other outlet. They were, in the most literal sense, emotional signage worn against the skin.

The ban on casual visitors came in 1770. By that point, a slow accumulation of pamphlets, parliamentary observations and medical complaints had built enough pressure that the hospital's governors could no longer treat public criticism as a minor inconvenience. Enlightenment thinking had spent decades expanding the boundaries of who counted as a full human being deserving of dignity, and that expansion had eventually reached the residents of Bethlem. Calling the visiting practice a disgrace was now socially acceptable, even among people who had themselves visited as younger men and women without a flicker of guilt. Historian Roger Ekirch spent years uncovering what preindustrial sleep actually looked like, and what he found was not the seamless slumber we strive to achieve. Sleep once commonly consisted of two major intervals: a first sleep and a second sleep, bridged after midnight by an hour or more of wakefulness in which people did practically everything imaginable. In the early nineteenth century, residents of Muscat in Oman were said to retire before ten so that “before midnight their first sleep was usually over.” This was the default setting of the human body before electricity told it otherwise.

The Midnight Watch and the Watchman’s Hour

The window of wakefulness between the two sleeps was known as “the watch,” and it served a wide range of activities that varied significantly depending on social standing, from prayer and household chores to work and socializing. For a peasant household, the watch was less a pause than a second shift. Under the weak glow of the moon, stars, and rush lights made from the waxed stems of rushes, people would tend to ordinary tasks such as adding wood to the fire, taking remedies, or checking on farm animals, while others carried out household chores like patching cloth, combing wool, or peeling rushes to be burned. In rural cottages, couples talked in whispers while children slept nearby, since the day’s labour rarely allowed extended conversation. The watch created a pocket of time free from daylight obligations, and some early texts suggested that intimacy flourished most naturally during this middle period, when bodies had rested but dawn still lay distant.

Religious devotions also shaped the watch deeply. Christians used this time for prayer and meditation, treating it as a peaceful hour when the world was still. Clergy whose schedules included Matins at roughly two or three in the morning folded the watch into their religious routine, while by candlelight or moonlight people read, wrote, studied, and prayed. The watch, in other words, gave people structured time to simply think.

The Industrial War on Human Darkness

Before factories, time was not a resource that could be wasted. People read the light, the season, and the body. When the industrial revolution arrived, it intensified time-consciousness by leaps and bounds, compressing segmented sleep into a single cycle and recasting sleep itself as a waste of productive hours. Gas lighting made fifty European cities navigable after dark by 1700, and Baltimore became the first American city lit by gas in 1816. A century later, electricity in streets and in homes meant that nightfall no longer dictated anything. The darkness that had structured human rest for millennia became optional.

The clock made this permanent. Clocks had existed since the ancient world, but when Levi Hutchins of New Hampshire fashioned the first mechanical alarm clock in 1787 specifically to rouse him for work, it was a new understanding of the relationship between sleep and labor. Factories needed punctual workers, so reliable alarm clocks became essential for everyday people, turning a device that had once belonged only to churches and royal palaces into a household staple enforcing industrial schedules. And the body, which had always woken in the middle of the night to tend fires and pray and think, was now expected to remain unconscious and productive-by-morning on someone else’s timetable.

By the late nineteenth century, insomnia, defined as the inability to sleep restfully through a single sleep cycle, had been categorized as a medical disorder, marking the end of the era of unproblematic segmented sleep. As early as the 1820s, parenting books were advising the prompt weaning of children from the two-sleep pattern, and by the late nineteenth century in the United States, compulsory school attendance created yet another cultural pressure to conform to the new consolidated schedule. Before the introduction of factory shift work, Americans had commonly slept in two nightly periods supplemented by daytime naps. The new regimen of eight uninterrupted hours led directly to the pathologization of every other way of sleeping. A biological rhythm that humans had practised across every continent and across thousands of years was reclassified, within a single century, as something requiring treatment.

In July 1518, a woman named Frau Troffea walked into the streets of Strasbourg and began to dance. There was no music playing, neither was there any celebration underway. Antiquity built figures to be worshipped from a distance, larger than life, mythologically sealed. The modern appetite runs in a different direction entirely. A woman who could wash clothes earned more in a week than a miner could pan in a month. And women who sold sex, who made up the most visible and economically active female population in most camps, were key to how these settlements functioned, taxed by local governments, regulated informally by male consensus, and discarded when the gold ran thin. Lanistas, the men who owned and traded gladiators, spent enormous sums acquiring, feeding, housing, and medically treating their fighters, which meant that every man who stepped into the arena had a financial value that needed to be protected even while he was being destroyed. The diet gladiators followed makes this logic even clearer. Isotope analysis of gladiator bones excavated in Ephesus, published by researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, revealed a diet built almost entirely on barley, beans, and dried fruit, which earned them the ancient nickname hordearii, meaning “barley men.” If you think about it, this was not the meat-heavy diet of a warrior being built for raw power. It was a calculated nutritional strategy designed to generate a thick layer of subcutaneous fat over developed muscle. That fat layer allowed blades to open dramatic, blood-filled wounds that thrilled the crowd without penetrating deep enough to immediately kill the fighter. The body was being shaped into a stage prop as much as a weapon.

What this reveals about Roman spectacle is genuinely unsettling. The medical care gladiators received was among the best available in the ancient world. Galen, one of history’s most influential physicians, began his career treating gladiators in Pergamon, and the surgical techniques he developed there influenced medicine for over a thousand years. These men were stitched up, rested, and returned to the sand not out of any concern for their humanity, but because the show required bodies that could absorb punishment across multiple appearances. The crowd was sold the idea of death and glory. What they were actually watching was something far colder: a managed performance, right down to the depth of every cut.

The Moment of Final Processing

When a gladiator fell and could not continue, the decision to grant or withhold mercy belonged to the crowd and, ultimately, to whoever was funding the games. If death was ruled, what followed was not a soldier’s honored passing but a procedure. A masked official known as Charun, styled after the Etruscan underworld deity, would approach the fallen man and strike him with a mallet, then drive a blade precisely into the back of the neck at the base of the skull. Another attendant dressed as Mercury, the god who escorted souls, would then press a red-hot iron against the body to confirm there was no reflex response, because faking death was a real concern. The Romans understood that a man in enough pain would try anything, and they had built a protocol around that fact.

The body was then dragged out through a specific exit on the northern side of the arena, referred to historically as the Gate of Death or the Libitinarian Gate, named for Libitina, the goddess overseeing corpses and funerals. The moment that threshold was crossed, everything changed. Inside the arena, the man had been a performer with a name, outside it, he became raw material. Attendants stripped the armor immediately, since equipment was costly and belonged to the lanista. The name that had been chanted minutes earlier meant nothing in that moment. The transaction was already complete, and what remained was simply a body to be processed before it spoiled.

What happened next is one of the more viscerally strange details Roman sources preserve. Gladiator sweat, collected during the fight using a curved tool called a strigil, was sold in small vials to wealthy Roman women as a skin treatment and aphrodisiac. The blood itself was also harvested. Pliny the Elder wrote that Romans suffering from epilepsy would drink gladiator blood fresh from the wound, believing the life force of a warrior could cure neurological disease. Physicians and vendor collected these materials quickly, because their value was tied entirely to freshness.

The Anonymous Descent

Outside the arena, Rome had a disposal problem. The majority of gladiators who died in the games were taken to open burial pits on the city’s outskirts called puticuli, a Latin term that translates, without ceremony, to “little wells” or “putrid pits.” These were mass graves shared with executed criminals, the destitute, animal carcasses from the arena, and general biological waste from the city’s daily operations. Archaeological excavations on the Esquiline Hill in Rome uncovered these sites in the nineteenth century and confirmed what the ancient sources had implied: the men who entertained hundreds of thousands were disposed of in conditions reserved for those Rome considered less than human.

What makes the rare gladiator tombstone so shocking is precisely how rare it was, and how hard someone had to fight to make it exist. Some gladiators belonged to organized collegia, fraternal groups within the ludus that functioned like burial guilds. Members paid dues specifically so that when they died, the group could cover the cost of a proper grave and a stone inscription. These tombstones, found across the Roman world from North Africa to the Balkans, record names, fight tallies, hometowns, and dedications from wives and children.

Rome’s sanitation laws were sophisticated enough to classify human remains as a public health category requiring active management, and gladiators fell under that in death just as they fell under commercial law in life. The Twelve Tables, Rome’s foundational legal code, prohibited burial within the city walls entirely, and later legislation expanded the regulatory infrastructure around corpse handling to address the very real threat of epidemic disease in a city of over a million people. Bodies that were not claimed or paid for by a collegium or family member were processed under these provisions as biological refuse, treated with the same civic urgency as contaminated water or diseased livestock. The law did not distinguish between the man who had filled the Colosseum and the criminal who had been strangled in the Tullianum prison. Once the body became a sanitation matter, its history ended.

Psychologists describe the “idealized other” as a mental substitution where a real person is gradually hollowed out and filled with the observer’s own longing, fear, and need for perfection. What Dante built was not a portrait of Beatrice Portinari but a monument to his own personal life, one that required her to remain silent and still to function properly. The moment she spoke freely, aged imperfectly, or simply moved through the world as a woman with her own private sorrows, she would have shattered the image. So the image required her absence. When Beatrice died in 1290 at around twenty-four years old, Dante’s grief was real and his loss was genuine. But grief, when it meets an already idealized image, it preserves a person. Her death gave him full artistic custody of her identity with no living woman left to contradict the version he needed her to be. She became the guide through Paradise, the embodiment of divine grace, the most celebrated woman in Italian literary history, and through all of it, she never got to have an opinion about any of it. What we call devotion in the Divine Comedy is also, if we are honest, a kind of erasure. Beatrice Portinari lived, married another man, had children, and died young. Dante made sure that none of that would be the thing we remembered.

The Architecture of Forced Silence

In the Divine Comedy, Beatrice speaks, but every word she utters is a word Dante wrote for her. This is the most sophisticated form of literary silencing because it does not look like silencing at all. Dante gave her a voice while ensuring she would never say anything he had not already decided she would say. Her speeches in Paradiso are theologically immaculate and emotionally convenient, arriving at moments that are his spiritual journey rather than illuminating anything about her world.

The concept of the Gaze, as theorized by scholars from Sartre to Laura Mulvey, describes the fundamental power imbalance between the one who looks and the one who is looked at. The observer holds enormous authority because they get to define what they see, and circulate that meaning to others. The subject of the gaze, whether a woman in a painting or Beatrice ascending through heaven, has no way of refusal built into the transaction. She cannot say the portrait is inaccurate or correct the record. Worship, when it operates this way, is not actually about the person being worshipped. It is about the worshipper’s need to have something pure and permanent to look at, and the subject pays the price of her own complexity to fulfill that need.

This dynamic did not stay in the medieval period. Today it surfaces in the way creators on social media turn real people, ex-partners, friends, and strangers found in a viral moment, into recurring characters in their personal content without consent. The language has changed but the structure is identical. Someone decides that another person’s image, story, or presence serves their narrative, and the real human behind that image becomes secondary to the usefulness of the role they have been assigned. Beatrice would have recognized the framework immediately.

The Cost of Being a Monument

The historical record of Beatrice Portinari is thin but revealing. She was born in 1265 to Folco Portinari, a wealthy Florentine banker. Around 1287, she married Simone dei Bardi, a man from another prominent banking family, and she died in June 1290, likely in her mid-twenties, possibly from complications related to childbirth. That is a life. A short one, full of the ordinary and extraordinary textures of a medieval Florentine woman. Dante’s poetry acknowledges almost none of it. Her marriage to another man is sidestepped. Her role as a wife and potentially a mother dissolves entirely. The real biographical moments of her twenty-four years gets compressed into a greeting she once gave him on a street and the way her presence made him feel.

There is a particular kind of harm in being exalted rather than seen, and it is one that psychology has only recently begun to name seriously. When someone is placed on a pedestal, the people doing the placing rarely notice that a pedestal is also a cage. The exalted person is required to remain worthy of the elevation, which means they are not permitted to be ordinary. Any evidence of their actual humanity is seen as a betrayal of the image rather than proof of their personhood. Beatrice could not have been a difficult woman, or a grieving one, or a bored one, because the monument Dante built had no room for those dimensions. The cost of being someone’s highest ideal is that you have to stop being a person in order to hold the position. That cost is paid entirely by the person on the pedestal, never by the one who put them there.

Thirteenth-century Florentine women were far from the passive, ethereal figures that courtly poetry preferred to depict. They managed household economies, negotiated the social terrain of powerful merchant families, participated in religious life with genuine theological engagement, and endured the very physical realities of repeated pregnancy, early widowhood, and political instability. Beatrice Portinari lived inside all of that. What Dante offered the world in her place was a figure of pure light who glides through paradise dispensing grace, untouched by anything so inconvenient as a lived experience.

Before the camera existed, wealthy Victorian patrons commissioned painters to render the suffering poor as romanticized tableaux. The picturesque misery of the slums hung in gilded frames above fireplaces. When photography arrived in the 1840s and spread through the latter half of the 19th century, something important did not change: the gaze. What actually changed was the claim to truth. A painting could be dismissed as artistic interpretation, but a photograph carried the weight of proof. Suddenly, the upper classes could consume suffering not as imagination but as document, and that distinction made the appetite for it far more voracious and far easier to justify.

Photographers like John Thomson and Oscar Rejlander built celebrated careers staging and capturing the destitute of London’s streets, marketing their images to middle and upper-class buyers as moral education. The purchase of such a photograph was framed as concern, even philanthropy, a way of bearing witness to inequality from the safety of a drawing room. What this framing carefully obscured was that the transaction had nothing to do with the subjects and everything to do with the buyers. Poverty became a collectible aesthetic, with the same market logic as landscape photography or portraiture of the aristocracy. The suffering in the frame was real but the compassion the image was meant to provoke was, in most cases, decorative.

The people photographed had no legal standing over their own image, no share in the profit, and often no knowledge of where their likeness would travel or how it would be sold. A child photographed in a Whitechapel alley could appear in a parlour in Edinburgh, in a social reform pamphlet in New York, or in a private collector’s album alongside curiosities from colonial expeditions. The photographer held every right the law recognised. The subject held none. This reflected a coherent belief that certain lives were raw material, available for use by those with the tools and the standing to do the using.

Predators Behind the Shutter

John Thomson’s 1877 collaboration with journalist Adolphe Smith, Street Life in London, is still cited in photography history as a groundbreaking work of social documentary. What that praise rarely lingers on is the methodology. Thomson moved through the poorest quarters of London with the confidence of a man who understood that his subjects had no vocabulary for refusal. He framed cramped courts and hollow-faced street sellers the way a colonial photographer framed foreign landscapes, as territory to be mapped, categorised, and brought back for a distant audience to study. The poverty he documented was real, but his framing of it as a kind of urban wilderness, exotic and navigable only by the educated eye, told the viewer far more about Thomson’s class assumptions than it ever told them about the lives he was pointing his lens at.

The myth of the candid photograph did significant work in this period. Many of the images sold as spontaneous captures of street life were arranged. Subjects were directed to stare vacantly, and to hold positions of exhaustion or grief long enough for the slow exposure times of early cameras to register the image. The photographers understood that composed misery read as authentic misery, and authentic misery sold. Calling it documentary gave the staged image a moral authority that a painting could never quite claim, and that authority was the product’s core value.

By the 1870s and 1880s, what had begun as individual artistic ambition had organised itself into something closer to an industry. Publishers, reform societies, and private collectors all created reliable demand for images of the poor, and photographers supplied that demand with the efficiency of any other trade. Print runs were produced, catalogues were circulated, and pricing varied by subject matter and composition quality. The people in those images remained entirely outside this economy. They generated the raw material, absorbed the intrusion of the camera into their already precarious lives, and received nothing in return, not even the basic courtesy of being told what their image would be used for. The industry called it documentation. A cleaner word for it is extraction.

Institutionalized Voyeurism

In the 1850s, Dr. Hugh Diamond, superintendent of the female department at Surrey County Asylum, began photographing his patients with a conviction that the camera could read madness on a human face. He presented his findings to the Royal Society in 1856, arguing that photography could capture the physiognomy of mental illness, essentially that you could diagnose a woman by studying her photograph. The patients he shot had no say in the matter. They were inmates in a Victorian asylum, which placed them at the absolute bottom of any hierarchy of rights or personhood. Diamond dressed some of them, arranged their expressions, and handed the resulting images to an audience of physicians and intellectuals who studied these women the way one might study specimens in a jar. The subjects were alive, present, and entirely erased from the process of deciding what their faces meant or who got to look at them.

What Diamond built was a template that institutions across Britain and eventually the wider world found enormously useful. Prisons began photographing inmates as part of booking and classification, a practice that sounds administrative until you understand that many of these images circulated far beyond any file. Reformatories photographed children. Workhouses documented their residents. The camera became an instrument of institutional power, a tool for asserting that these people were cases to be managed rather than individuals with interior lives. The photographs produced in these settings share a particular quality: the subjects almost never look comfortable, and they almost never look like they chose to be there, because they did not.

The connection between this clinical gaze and the street photography happening simultaneously in London’s slums is not coincidental. Both operated on the same underlying assumption, that certain categories of person were available for visual consumption by those with authority over them. A photographer moving through Whitechapel and a doctor moving through an asylum ward were both making decisions about whose image belonged to them. The asylum simply removed any remaining ambiguity about power. The patients sat for the camera because the alternative was to refuse an order from the man who controlled every condition of their daily existence. That is not a portrait sitting. It is a seizure, and the Victorian medical establishment framed it as science without losing a moment’s sleep.
