Maybe she mentioned her boyfriend but that would mean the topic was external not relational not directed inward but if she didn’t mention him then maybe she was implying something but implication requires intention and intention requires clarity and there was no clarity only fragments and if the fragments meant something then the meaning is inaccessible because the context was incomplete and if the context was incomplete then the entire event collapses into uncertainty and uncertainty collapses into doubt and doubt collapses into judgment and judgment collapses into void and the void collapses into silence and the silence collapses into replay and the replay collapses into distortion and the distortion collapses into another question and it all repeats itself again and again as if it was meant to be a curse a directed curse or maybe a self-directed one but again…..does it truly matter?

Their faces shift, micro‑expressions aligning, eyes brightening, mouths opening in laughter that seems spontaneous but spontaneity cannot be measured and brightness cannot be quantified and laughter cannot be trusted because laughter is often camouflage and….

Is that happiness? Or is it performance? Or is it habit? Or is it noise mistaken for joy? Or is it joy mistaken for noise? Or is it neither because the category itself is flawed and…..

They lean closer, bodies angled inward, forming a closed circle, a geometry of belonging or a foul theatre play something taken from Descartes or Shakespeare or maybe Euclid? Regardless geometry does not imply intimacy and intimacy does not imply depth and depth does not imply truth and truth does not imply anything except the failure of interpretation and….

Look at them… their ease, their fluidity, their unthinking comfort with each other, the way they occupy space without analyzing it, the way they speak without rehearsing, the way they exist without questioning existence….

Antithesis is a form geometry?

We started heading toward the dorms, the long hallways of the retreat center echoing with footsteps and voices. And somewhere in that movement, I met probably the most important person in this entire narration.

A kid I’ll call IL.

He had sickle cell disease, but he also had autism something that I actually share with him. I don’t remember the exact moment we connected but it wasn’t a long conversation. It was something quieter, something instinctive. A way of co-existing you could say,a way of speaking and listening that matched mine without effort. Within minutes, he became the gravitational center of my week.

The first hours continued with games, small discussions, and the kind of early interactions that usually drain me. But everyone was strangely chill. Communicative. Open. The counselors all knew each other already, yet they didn’t cling together or form closed circles. Even the kids most of whom had been here multiple times moved with a kind of easy familiarity that didn’t exclude anyone. Except one. There was one kid who was new. But even he didn’t seem lost.

For a moment just a moment I felt something I rarely feel in groups: welcomed. Not in a loud way, but in a quiet, natural way that didn’t demand anything from me. And in that moment, I dropped my shields. All the second‑guessing, all the guilt, all the hesitation that usually follows me into social spaces it fell away. I interacted with people without thinking twice. Without rehearsing. Without bracing.

It felt unreal. Soft and almost out of this world. Simple interactions have always been hard for me. They take energy, calculation, restraint. But Group 8 made everything easy. Effortless. They created a space where I didn’t have to fight myself to exist.

Even now, I still can’t fully believe it.

The day kept unfolding in small, steady movements. I remember eventually finding my way to the basketball court. The three people I had arrived with,had already joined their own groups, which, strangely, made me feel lighter. It meant I could focus entirely on what was in front of me Group 8, the kids, the counselors, the week that was beginning to take shape.

The basketball court was alive in that soft, early camp way: kids relaxing, talking, testing the space, figuring out where they fit. I didn’t know my group fully yet, but I remember seeing E and S the new boy sitting together, talking with the kind of ease that comes from familiarity or maybe just natural curiosity. I joined them. The conversation felt effortless. With the kids, communication was always simple, direct, unfiltered. With people in their twenties(my age) it’s usually different heavier, more hard to follow or develop but talking to E felt strangely natural, as if she didn’t require any performance from me.

We played ball games for a while, passing, shooting, laughing at small mistakes. Then the energy shifted and someone suggested thumb war. 1, 2, 3, 4 — I declare a thumb war.

S challenged E first, and he won. Then E turned to me. I remember the hesitation a tiny pause, a restraint that didn’t make sense even to me. She said something that didn’t register at first, but after a one second delay, I accepted. And within two seconds, she crushed me. My physical strength, all the training, all the athletic confidence none of it mattered in that tiny, ridiculous battle. It made everyone laugh, including me.

More small moments followed connection, lightness, the kind of interactions that build trust without announcing themselves. After a treasure hunt game, we were called for dinner. I remember the kids sticking stickers on our backs while we ate, begging us not to tell the other counselors. It was childish, funny, and refreshing. By then, I had connected more deeply with IL, understood his condition better, and started figuring out ways to support him throughout the week. His presence not only grounded but also gave me a purpose.

Conversations continued with the kids, with E, with the rest of Group 8 until night settled over the retreat center and we were assigned dorm duty. Some counselors complained, but for me it felt easy. Our boys were cooperative, calm, and mature but also maybe simply just tired! The whole procedure of waiting with the kids to take their medication was also very interesting and new to me, but to be honest I didn’t have to do much, the nurses knew the kids already and they were taking care of everything.

Back to the dorms a few discussions continued. The other counselors were supportive, kind, patient and well grounded something that remained true for the whole week, but that belongs to tomorrow’s entry.

Sunday Arrival

A week ago, I stepped into something I had been resisting for a long time: a summer camp for children living with cancer and sickle cell disease. I was there as a counselor. I won’t say much about my background but for reasons I’ll explain as the week unfolds, this experience forced me to confront parts of myself I usually keep buried. It made me think about my life in ways I didn’t expect.

So let us start the property itself was enormous not the typical wooden‑cabin summer camp you see in movies, but an old Catholic retreat center spread across acres of land. Long stone and wood buildings, wide lawns, and dorm rooms arranged in wings that felt both functional and strangely sacred. The place carried the weight of decades: old architecture, old hallways, old echoes. It wasn’t cozy; but it still made sense some of us even called family.

I arrived on Sunday with three people I already knew. Everyone else was a stranger. Most of the counselors were between sixteen and twenty‑one, and I was twenty seven noticeably older, though I didn’t dwell on it. We gathered in one of the large halls for introductions, forming a loose circle of volunteers. Orientation followed: rules, expectations, emergency procedures, and then the usual ice‑breaker games meant to make strangers feel like teammates. They were fun enough, but I didn’t attach much meaning to them. My mind was somewhere else.

During orientation, they told us about the kids their diagnoses, their medications, the needs we might have to tend to. I remember listening closely, feeling a quiet pressure settle in my chest. Yes, this was an opportunity. Yes, I wanted to be here. But my actual medical experience was limited, and hearing the list of conditions and treatments made that limitation feel sharp. I felt the responsibility before the week even began.

Then the buses arrived.

They told us to go outside, to hype the kids up, to welcome them with energy and warmth. So we did. A line of counselors cheering as the buses pulled in, as faces appeared behind the windows, as small bodies stepped down onto the pavement. It was loud, chaotic, joyful the kind of moment that feels bigger than you while you’re standing inside it and while all of this was taking place they handed out our name tags while our buses were still arriving. A small laminated card, nothing special at first glance, but they emphasized how important it was to keep it on at all times not just for us, the counselors, but for the campers too. Each tag had a number. That number was our group for the week: the kids we’d be responsible for, the counselors we’d be working beside, the people whose rhythms and moods would become our daily landscape.

I was assigned to Group 8.

While we were gathering everyone together, I met our group leader J. He was the one distributing the tags, calling out names with the kind of loud confidence that only comes from having done this before. When he shouted my name, I raised my hand and said, “Yeah, that’s me,” and he immediately cracked a joke. I don’t even remember what it was, but I remember the ease of it, the way he set the tone without trying too hard.

The order of introductions is blurry now. I met one of the kids first a small moment, a shy hello, the kind of interaction that doesn’t reveal anything yet. I remember picking his luggage Then I met J properly. And then E. Or maybe it was the other way around,I do not remember any more.

E was a young woman who, despite the boys and girls being separated into different dorm wings, would still be part of our group as a counselor. I remember talking to her and being surprised by how easy it was. Effortless conversation. No awkward pauses. No sense of needing to perform. For reasons I still don’t fully understand, that bothered me throughout the week not in a negative way, but in a way that made me aware of myself.

As ridiculous,immature and superficial as it might sound I am not used to good looking people talking to me with that kind of natural openness. And she wasn’t the typical kind of beautiful not the polished, predictable type. She had curly hair and green eyes, a combination I rarely saw, and something about her presence made me pay attention even when I didn’t want to.

But the mission was simple. They told us clearly: the kids come first. Everything else our personalities, our insecurities, our curiosities had to fall behind that. So I put all my priority there. Just like they instructed us to do.

I think I will stop the first part of the first day here. I want to write a representation of the past few days in a as detailed manner as I possibly can so I will probably focus on just that for now and finish day one even later today.

Shogi belongs to the chaturanga family, the same ancient Indian root that produced chess, xiangqi, and janggi. But Japan transformed it. The defining mutation is the drop rule captured pieces switch sides and can be placed back onto the board as your own. No other major chess variant has this. It makes shogi a game of resurrection, counterattack, and long term resource management.

Shogi is played on a 9×9 board with 20 pieces per side. The goal is simple: checkmate the king. The complexity comes from movement patterns, promotions, and drops.

I hope this all makes sense! Now you might wonder where does it all come from!?Shogi’s earliest literary appearance is in the Shōyūki, a diary written by Fujiwara no Sanesuke, dated 1007. That is the first time the word shōgi appears clearly in Japanese writing. Before that as we said, historians trace its ancestry to Indian chaturanga, which traveled to China (becoming xiangqi) and then to Japan, where it evolved into something distinct. The drop rule likely emerged during the Heian or Kamakura periods, possibly inspired by the idea that defeated warriors could be recruited by the opposing side. Whether historically accurate or poetic metaphor, it fits,shogi is a game of turning loss into opportunity.

By the 16th century, shogi had stabilized into its modern form. Defensive structures like Yagura, Mino, and Anaguma became architectural concepts. The Edo period formalized professional play, and the 20th century produced legends:

• Yoshiharu Habu — the philosopher-king

• Sōta Fujii — the prodigy rewriting every record

• Kunio Yonenaga — the charismatic ambassador

• Kōji Tanigawa — the quiet strategist

Their games shaped the aesthetic of modern shogi.

Shogi is expanding beyond Japan. Three forces drive this:

Streaming culture — Twitch (especially abema in Japan) and YouTube have made board games social again.

AI engines — Tools like elmo and 技巧 changed how openings are studied.

Media exposure — Anime and manga made shogi emotionally legible to global audiences.

The most influential work is March Comes in Like a Lion (3‑gatsu no Lion),a story about depression, mentorship, and the healing power of shogi. It introduced millions to the emotional interior of the game.

Now a bit about my involvement with the Shogi. I began shogi with curiosity and confusion losing to simple forks, misreading castles, forgetting to defend the second file. But slowly, the board started speaking back.

Six months later, I reached 8‑kyū.

It wasn’t glamorous. It was: pushing pawns too early resigning too later resigning too early learning to breathe before moving.But somewhere in that struggle, I fell in love with the game.

Shogi rewards patience, memory, and self‑correction. Every mistake is yours. Every improvement is yours. Every victory feels earned. My goal now is to reach 1‑dan, and for the first time, it feels possible.

Shogi is not just a board game. It can be way more than that it teaches you how to lose, how to rebuild, and how to see opportunity inside chaos. It teaches you that every captured piece can return, every position can be repaired, and every setback contains the seed of a counterattack.

Shogi is a way of thinking disguised as a game.

It simply observes and that’s the first thing that makes this movie so uniquely beautiful.

The realism is not accidental. Much of Big World was filmed in Chengdu, in real neighborhoods, real restaurants, real homes. The walls are scuffed. The lighting is uneven. The spaces feel lived‑in. This is not a film that tries to elevate reality into cinematic beauty , it tries to honor reality by leaving it untouched.

What makes Big World resonate is its refusal to dramatize disability. Liu Chunhe is not framed as a tragedy or a miracle. He is not a metaphor for perseverance. He is simply a person trying to navigate a world that wasn’t designed with him in mind. The film shows the small negotiations of daily life the way his grandmother’s stubborn love becomes both shield and anchor, the way society’s uneven accessibility shapes his choices, the way his dreams of attending a teachers college are treated as both impossible and completely reasonable.

These moments echo real experiences documented across China and globally. The China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF) has long reported on the gaps in accessibility and employment. The World Health Organization outlines how cerebral palsy is not just a medical condition but a social one, shaped by infrastructure, education, and cultural attitudes. Now as far as I am concerned and all spoilers aside I’ll be honest: at first, I didn’t think Big World was “a movie” in the traditional sense. I kept waiting for the big emotional moment the dramatic collapse, the orchestral swell, the scene engineered to make me cry. I expected the familiar architecture of disability cinema, where pain is heightened for effect and triumph is exaggerated for catharsis.

But Big World never gives you that.

And that’s exactly why it’s perfect!!!

The film trusts you. It trusts silence. It trusts subtlety. It trusts the idea that life with cerebral palsy or any disability is not a constant tragedy or a constant triumph. It is a series of quiet frustrations, modest victories, and ordinary days. The film’s emotional honesty lies in its refusal to perform pain for the viewer. It does not manipulate. It does not plead. It does not try to make you cry.

And because of that, something deeper happens.

You begin to recognize the humanity in the small moments the way Chunhe adjusts his posture before speaking, the way his grandmother watches him with a mixture of pride and worry, the way he looks at the world with a desire that is neither dramatic nor heroic, just human.

Sometimes the most unseen realities don’t need to be dramatic to be visible.

They just need to be seen and the movie delivers that beautifully.

By the time the credits rolled, I realized the film had done something rare: it showed dignity without spectacle. It showed struggle without manipulation. It showed life without demanding applause. It didn’t give me a moment to cry ( not that others couldn’t have done so) and that absence became the emotional truth of the film.

They wear masks, summon mythic Personas, and confront the corrupted hearts of adults who have lost their way. But beneath the supernatural plot, Persona 5 is really about something far more grounded: how a person chooses to live. How they choose their identity, their relationships, their growth, their aesthetic, and their inner world. It’s a game about becoming the protagonist of your own life.

And that’s why this matters.

Singapore’s early history is usually told through the lens of economic survival, military weakness, and political discipline. But beneath all the steel, concrete, and policy work was something more fragile and more important. The question of who Singaporeans were supposed to be. And that question was answered more clearly by Sinnathamby Rajaratnam than by anyone else.

He was not the economist. He was not the general. He was not the engineer. He was the writer, the thinker, the moral compass of a country that did not yet know what it wanted to become. He shaped the emotional and philosophical foundation of the nation in a way no one else could.

The National Pledge was his most famous contribution. He wrote it during a time when Singapore was still bleeding from racial riots and the trauma of separation from Malaysia. The idea of a Singaporean identity barely existed. Rajaratnam understood that unity could not come from the past because the past was divided. So he wrote a pledge that pointed toward a future that did not yet exist. A future where people were united not by race or religion but by a shared commitment to a common destiny. It was not just patriotic language. It was a blueprint for a new kind of society.

As Singapore’s first Foreign Minister, Rajaratnam had to represent a tiny, vulnerable island on the world stage at a moment when many believed it would not survive. He secured recognition for the new country, brought Singapore into the United Nations, and helped establish the diplomatic posture that still defines the nation today. He believed that small states could not rely on size or force. They had to rely on ideas, credibility, and moral clarity. This belief shaped Singapore’s foreign policy for decades.

Rajaratnam was also the strongest voice for a race blind national identity. In the 1960s, this was not a common idea anywhere in the world, and certainly not in Southeast Asia. He argued that race should not define destiny. He pushed for a civic identity that treated multiculturalism as a strength rather than a compromise. His speeches repeatedly emphasized that Singaporeans had to rise above the tyranny of race. This idea became the backbone of Singapore’s social compact.

Before he became Foreign Minister, he served as Minister for Culture. This role is often overlooked, but it was crucial. He helped shape the early national narrative and the idea of Singapore as a meritocratic, forward looking society. He understood that a nation is not built only through economics or defense but through stories, symbols, and shared meaning. He helped create the emotional architecture of the country.

In 1980, he became Deputy Prime Minister. It was a recognition of his intellectual leadership and his moral authority. Even after retiring from politics, he remained a guiding figure. Leaders continued to seek his perspective when they needed clarity or a reminder of the ideals Singapore was built on. He never sought wealth or personal power. He sought coherence, principle, and purpose.

Rajaratnam matters today because he reminds Singapore that ideas matter as much as policies. He gave the country a national identity, a moral compass, a foreign policy doctrine, and a vision of unity that still holds the society together. He understood that nations are not just built. They are imagined, argued for, and believed into existence.

South Africa’s apartheid government entered the space arena not out of scientific curiosity, but out of strategic paranoia.
International sanctions, Cold War tensions, and regional conflicts pushed the regime to seek self‑reliance in missile and surveillance technology.

According to political scientist Chris Alden, the programme’s origins were rooted in the apartheid state’s “security concerns” and its desire to maintain military superiority in the region.

This early period included:

• Ballistic missile research in partnership with Israel (inferred from multiple historical analyses, though often classified).

• Tracking stations built for NASA and later repurposed for domestic use.

By 1866, Hong Kong was playing formal Interport matches, beginning with fixtures against Shanghai. These were long, festive affairs part sport, part diplomacy, part bragging rights between colonial outposts.

In 1890, Hong Kong expanded its cricketing world, adding matches against Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and The Straits Settlements. These games were the closest thing Asia had to an international cricket circuit at the time.

This era marks the birth of what we can meaningfully call the Hong Kong cricket team — a representative side, traveling, competing, and building a regional identity.

The SS Bokhara Tragedy (1892)

No history of Hong Kong cricket can avoid its darkest chapter.

In October 1892, the Hong Kong team was returning from a match in Shanghai aboard the SS Bokhara when the ship was caught in a typhoon and sank.
125 people died, including 11 of the 13 Hong Kong cricketers on board. Only two players survived.

If you trace the mouth of the Pearl River Delta with your finger, you land on two small peninsulas that once held the weight of global empires. Macau, leased to Portugal in 1557, and Hong Kong, ceded to Britain in 1842, became the twin laboratories of Western ambition in East Asia.

They were close enough to see each other’s lights across the water, yet their destinies diverged so sharply that they became opposites one ancient and fading, the other engineered and ascendant. Their histories are rarely told together, but they were always in conversation, always reacting to each other’s rise and decline.

I. Macau: The First Door China Allowed to Open

Macau’s colonial story begins long before the British ever dreamed of Hong Kong. In 1557, the Ming court allowed Portuguese traders to settle on the peninsula in exchange for rent and cooperation against piracy. It was not a formal cession China retained sovereignty but Portugal gained administrative control.

For centuries, Macau was the West’s only legal gateway into China. Jesuits like Matteo Ricci passed through its harbors; merchants moved silver, silk, and later opium; and Chinese officials tolerated the enclave as long as it stayed small and useful.

But by the early 1800s, Macau was stagnating. Its harbor was silting. Its trade was shrinking. Its political status was ambiguous. And then Britain arrived with gunboats.

II. Hong Kong: A Colony Born in the Shockwave of the Opium Wars

Hong Kong’s birth was not negotiated—it was seized.
After the First Opium War, the Treaty of Nanking (1842) forced China to cede Hong Kong Island to Britain “in perpetuity.”

Unlike Macau, which grew organically over centuries, Hong Kong was built with imperial precision. The British dredged its deep-water harbor, declared it a free port, and turned it into the beating heart of their South China trade.

Within a few decades, Hong Kong had eclipsed Macau in population, commerce, and geopolitical importance. The old Portuguese port suddenly looked like a relic from another era.

Portugal, alarmed, tried to assert full sovereignty over Macau in the 1840s. Tensions escalated, and only in 1887 did China formally recognize Macau as Portuguese territory. By then, Hong Kong was already the empire’s jewel.
