Now a much bigger name has picked up the story.

WHAT ALTUCHER SAID

James Altucher posted a long idea on DNA this week: “Ginkgo’s robot lab could become the ‘AWS of AI drug discovery,’ running 36,000 experiments without scientists.”

WHO IS JAMES ALTUCHER

Altucher is a former hedge fund manager, serial entrepreneur, and one of the most widely read financial writers of the last decade. Cornell computer science graduate, sold his first company for about $15 million in 1998, traded for hedge funds in the early 2000s, ran a fund of funds, founded and sold StockPickr for $10 million in 2007, and was a seed investor in Buddy Media before its $745 million sale to Salesforce. He has written more than 20 books, including the bestseller Choose Yourself, and hosts The James Altucher Show, which claims over 40 million downloads.

Two things readers should know. First, Altucher publishes paid investment newsletters through Paradigm Press, so a public post like this is typically a teaser for a subscription product, not an independent research note. Second, he has a history of bold calls in both directions — he called Bitcoin a “fad or a scam” in 2013 before becoming a crypto promoter in 2017. Treat his post as attention, not analysis. Attention, though, is what moves small caps.

WHAT HE’S POINTING AT

The “36,000 experiments” claim is real, but it isn’t new. On February 5, 2026, OpenAI and Ginkgo announced that GPT-5 had autonomously designed and run 36,000 unique protein-synthesis reaction compositions in Ginkgo’s automated Boston lab over six months, with humans handling little more than reagent prep. The AI found a recipe that cut production cost about 40% versus the prior state of the art. Ginkgo has since opened that lab to outside researchers through a web browser — the “Cloud Lab” — which is what the AWS comparison is about: rent the robots, don’t build the lab.

What’s new is that the narrative is getting picked up by a mainstream financial voice at the same time the stock is moving.

WHERE DNA STANDS AT THESE LEVELS

The bull case: Ginkgo has divested its biosecurity segment, cut costs, and is betting the company on autonomous labs and the OpenAI relationship. If the Cloud Lab becomes a real revenue line, the stock is re-rating off a low base with roughly $373 million in cash on hand.

The bear case, and it’s the one the Street is on: revenue is still shrinking (trailing twelve months about $132 million, down 37%), losses are large, and free cash flow is negative. Consensus rating is Sell. BTIG cut its target to $5 from $9. TD Cowen downgraded to Hold this month after a Q2 sales miss and projects $125–150 million of cash burn this year. The average target sits around $7–8.50 depending on the source, which is roughly where the stock is.

Put simply: this is a turnaround story that has caught a bid on a narrative. That can run further than fundamentals justify, and it can reverse just as fast. DNA dropped more than 8% in a single session last week.

WHAT TO WATCH

Any announcement of paying Cloud Lab customers — that’s what converts the story into revenue. The next earnings date and cash-burn update. And whether the stock can hold above the $7.50 level on the Altucher attention, or fades once it passes.

On August 25th, copper futures on the COMEX hit an all-time record of roughly $6.73 per pound (about $14,800 per tonne). On the London Metal Exchange, three-month copper traded above $14,300 per tonne intraday — territory the metal had never seen before this year. Copper first broke through $14,000 back in May, and instead of rolling over the way commodity spikes usually do, it has kept grinding higher all summer.

When a metal that wires the entire modern economy makes new all-time highs in August, you don’t ignore it. You figure out why — and then you figure out who benefits.

Why Copper Is Going Vertical

Three forces are stacking on top of each other at the same time, and understanding them is the key to the whole trade.

1. The AI power build-out is a copper story in disguise. Every data center being built to power the AI boom is, at its core, a giant box of copper — transformers, busbars, cabling, cooling. Add the power-grid upgrades needed to feed those data centers, plus electric vehicles, and you get a structural demand wave that doesn’t care what the Fed does next quarter. Analysts at Barchart have called data-center demand the primary driver behind elevated copper prices.

2. Supply can’t keep up — and it’s getting worse, not better. Chile, the world’s largest producer, has faced repeated guidance cuts and operational problems at its major mines. The Democratic Republic of Congo — the world’s fastest-growing copper source — has seen disruptions and export restrictions. New mines take 10-15+ years to permit and build. You cannot fix a copper shortage quickly no matter how high the price goes.

3. US tariffs have broken the market in copper’s favor. Washington has signaled copper import duties of 15% starting January 2027, stepping up to 30% in 2028. The result: traders are racing to move metal into the US ahead of the deadline. US refined copper imports hit roughly 885,000 tonnes in the first half of 2026, and COMEX warehouses have swelled to record levels — over 675,000 tonnes. Here’s the kicker: CRU analysts who once forecast a ~639,000-tonne global surplus for 2026 now describe the market as “at best balanced” — with the rest of the world effectively trading in deficit because so much metal is locked up in American warehouses.

Structural demand. Broken supply. A tariff-driven scramble for physical metal. That’s how you get all-time highs — and why we think copper equities deserve a place on your watchlist right now.

So here are the five names we’re watching, starting with the one we’ve spent the most time digging into.

⭐ #1 — Copper Giant Resources (TSXV: CGNT | OTCQB: LBCMF) — Our Focus Stock

Every list like this needs a large-cap anchor or two — and we’ll get to those. But the truth is, the majors give you copper exposure. It’s the juniors with tier-one-scale discoveries that can give you multiples — and Copper Giant is the one we keep coming back to.

The story in one paragraph: Copper Giant controls the Mocoa copper-molybdenum project in Colombia, which already hosts an inferred resource of 1.12 billion tonnes at 0.51% copper-equivalent — one of the largest undeveloped copper systems in the Americas. It’s backed by legendary mining financier Frank Giustra, the man behind some of the biggest wins in mining finance history.

And in the last month, the story has gone from interesting to hard-to-ignore:

• August 6: The company closed a C$31 million strategic financing led by Denarius Metals (which took a 15.6% stake at C$0.72 per share), announced alongside a 10-year offtake agreement with Trafigura — one of the largest commodity traders in the world — covering 20% of Mocoa’s future copper and molybdenum concentrate. Giustra and CEO Ian Harris both bought in the financing, and all major participants accepted two-year lock-ups. Read that again: the smart money bought at $0.72 and agreed not to sell until 2028.

• August 27: Copper Giant released one of the most impressive drill intercepts we’ve seen from any junior this year: 771 metres of continuous 0.54% copper-equivalent, including a higher-grade core of 102 metres at 0.87% CuEq. A second hole extended mineralization to the southeast and below the depths where historic drilling stopped in the 1970s-80s — with grades improving at depth.

• Coming up: Three drill rigs are turning, assays are pending from the La Estrella satellite target, and the first Preliminary Economic Assessment is expected in Q4 2026 — the catalyst that puts real economic numbers on this deposit for the first time.

The market has noticed — the stock has roughly doubled since late June (from a C$0.71 close on June 29 to a C$1.31 close on August 27). We’re not going to pretend the easy money hasn’t been made on that first leg. But with a resource this size, a trading giant contractually attached to future production, insiders locked up for two years, and a PEA weeks away, this remains — in our opinion — one of the most compelling risk/reward setups in the entire copper space.

To be equally clear about the other side: this is a pre-revenue exploration company in Colombia. A weak PEA, disappointing assays, or a copper correction could hit this stock hard and fast. Size any position accordingly.

#2 — Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX)

The blue-chip way to own the copper bull market. Freeport is one of the world’s largest publicly traded copper producers, and its shares hit record highs this summer on the back of the copper rally and a second-quarter earnings beat. Here’s what makes Freeport special in the tariff era: it’s the dominant American copper producer, with major US mining and smelting operations — meaning that if imported copper faces 15-30% duties from 2027, domestically produced pounds become that much more valuable. Analysts have estimated the recent copper price strength implies hundreds of millions of dollars in additional annual cash flow. If you want one sleep-at-night name for copper exposure, this is the one.

#3 — Teck Resources (NYSE: TECK | TSX: TECK.B)

The special situation. Teck is in the process of a “merger of equals” with Anglo American to create Anglo Teck — a global copper champion — with the deal working through regulatory approvals and expected to close between 2026 and 2027. In the meantime, the underlying business is performing: Teck delivered blowout earnings this summer as its QB2 copper operation ramps. You’re buying a strong copper producer today with a built-in catalyst — the completion of one of the largest mining combinations in a generation.

#4 — Ivanhoe Mines (TSX: IVN | OTCQX: IVPAF)

The high-grade growth machine — currently on sale because of a problem it’s actively fixing. Ivanhoe’s Kamoa-Kakula complex in the DRC is one of the highest-grade major copper mines on Earth. Operations were disrupted by underground flooding in 2025, and the company has spent the past year executing its recovery plan — producing 71,417 tonnes of copper in Q1 2026 and 64,328 tonnes in Q2 while dewatering and remediation advance, with formal 2026-2027 guidance laid out. Turnarounds at world-class assets are historically where patient money gets paid. Higher risk than Freeport, world-class asset quality, and leverage to every dollar copper adds

#5 — Southern Copper (NYSE: SCCO)

The dividend-payer with the longest runway. Southern Copper holds some of the largest copper reserves of any company in the world, with low-cost, long-life operations in Peru and Mexico and a long history of returning cash to shareholders. It’s the tortoise of this list: you’re not buying a discovery or a merger — you’re buying decades of reserves at the low end of the global cost curve, in a world where the metal those reserves contain just hit an all-time high. For income-focused readers who still want copper torque, this is the natural pick.

The Bottom Line

Copper at all-time highs is not a meme move — it’s the physical economy telling you that demand from electrification and AI has collided with a supply base that took decades to underinvest in and will take decades to rebuild. The majors (FCX, SCCO), the special situation (TECK), and the turnaround (IVN) all give you real exposure. But if you’re asking where the asymmetric opportunity sits — the kind of setup where being right can matter enormously to a portfolio — our focus remains Copper Giant (TSXV: CGNT) heading into its Q4 PEA.

CRDL is up another 10% today at $2.20, a new 52-week high and more than double the ~$1.06 level where we first covered it on July 14th. Congratulations to everyone who read that issue and did their own work.

Yesterday’s break above $2.00 held and today’s volume confirms buyers are stepping in above that level rather than selling into it. Canaccord Genuity raised its target to $10 last week and H.C. Wainwright is at $9 — both assume a successful Phase III. The next milestone is MAVERIC enrollment completion, and until the company announces it, this remains a story about anticipation rather than results.

GINKGO BIOWORKS (NYSE: DNA) — FROM $6.60 TO A $7.50 HIGH

We flagged DNA at $6.60 last week. The stock touched $7.50 yesterday, a gain of nearly 14% at the high. Nice move for anyone who acted on their own research.

A few things to know about DNA that make it a different situation from CRDL. Ginkgo is a platform company, not a clinical-stage biotech, and it is in the middle of a restructuring: it divested its biosecurity segment, is focusing on cell engineering and its new Cloud Lab automation platform, and has been cutting costs. Revenue is still falling and the losses are large. The Street is cautious — consensus is Sell with a $7 average target, and TD Cowen downgraded the stock to Hold this month after a Q2 sales miss, projecting $125–150 million of cash burn in 2026. The bull case is that the cost cuts and automation bet work and the stock re-rates from a low base. The bear case is that revenue keeps shrinking faster than costs. This is a trade on the turnaround, and volatility in both directions is the norm.

A WORD OF CAUTION

Two names, two sharp moves in a short window. That is exactly when discipline matters most. CRDL has more than doubled in a few weeks ahead of a binary readout. DNA gave back more than 8% in a single session this week. If you hold either, know your position size and your exit plan. Chasing a stock at new highs is a very different decision than buying it in the base.

Three things moved the stock:

1. Phase II data published in JAHA. The peer-reviewed publication we covered last time put CardiolRx’s recurrent pericarditis results in front of the cardiology community.

2. Phase III MAVERIC is advancing. The company reported continued progress on its pivotal trial in mid-August. Enrollment completion is the next milestone, followed by top-line data.

3. Canaccord Genuity raised its price target to $10 from $8. On August 17, analyst Edward Nash reiterated a Buy rating and lifted the target 25%. H.C. Wainwright also carries a Buy with a $9 target.

The setup we described — peer-reviewed data, strong institutional backing, a clear technical level, and a pending catalyst — has played out so far. But an 89% move in a few weeks is not normal, and the most important event for this company hasn’t happened yet. Manage your position size and your risk accordingly.
