My studio practice is a dance of strict pacing. Approximately every 45 minutes, I have to vary my positioning—alternating between reclining, sitting, standing, and walking. I track this energy meticulously. Using the Visible Health band and app, I have watched my daily pacing points grow from a fragile 15 following a spinal surgery and fusion in October 2024, to 35 today. Recently, I’ve introduced a metabolic band and app from Hume to support me through a GLP-1 weight loss program, aiming to retain my protein intake and vital muscle mass.

Because I cannot tolerate sitting for long stretches, traditional travel by car or airplane is precluded. My physical world has specific borders. But an artist’s vision cannot be easily contained.

Expanding the Studio Walls

Because I cannot easily travel to far-off vistas, my source material must come to me. My work is born from imaginary compositions, backyard plein air sessions, studio still lifes, and the vast digital landscape of social media and Google Search.

It is here, in the search for reference material, that the conversation around inspiration becomes personal.

I don't look at a digital image to replicate it. My artistic style is fundamentally expressionistic, heavily influenced by Fauvism and the vivid permutations of Impressionism. When an image captures me, it is merely the catalyst. My interpretation forces a radical shift in color, composition, and scale. The inspiration is a spark; the fire is built from the explosive hues on my palette, the push and pull of high contrast, and the raw emotional response of the moment.

The Dialogue with the Lens

There are two photographers whose work consistently calls to my internal eye. The first is Tim McKenna, who captures the stark, monolithic beauty of Big Bend. The second is Thomas Mabry, who documents the mist-laden, ancient ridges of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains in the Appalachian Range.

When I look at their photographs, I am not seeing a blueprint to copy. I am feeling a mood. The scene they captured generates a distinct resonance within me. My paintings are never reproductions of their lenses; instead, they are an expression of that feeling. I gather the raw shapes, the heavy atmosphere, the physical elements, and the iconic landmarks of the landscape, and I filter them through my own vision.

What emerges on the substrate is a completely new and unique composition—a familiar, iconic view utterly transformed by a personal color scheme and an emotional language.

The Independence of the Viewer

Once the paint dries, a fascinating separation occurs. The emotional response I felt while creating the piece belongs entirely to me. The emotional response of you, the viewer, is completely separate, independent, and personal to your own history.

And that is exactly why, in my mind, Art is not the product; it is the process of creating. The product is merely the artifact left behind. The true art lives in the pacing, the adaptation, the shifting of weight, the mixing of the pigment, and the beautiful, defiant act of translating the great, wide world from the quiet center of the studio.

In the ancient, mist-shrouded forests and high glens of Great Britain, the boundary between the physical earth and the supernatural Otherworld has long been understood not as a stone wall, but as a shifting, permeable threshold. Folklore and classical literature label the White Stag as the ultimate archetype of this liminal landscape—a sovereign messenger whose appearance shatters the complacency of the human world and summons us into the unseen. In my ongoing exploration of the sacred architecture of the natural world, he stands as a quiet yet thunderous sentinel. Otherworldly Bugle, the fourth entry in the Spiritual Messengers Series (following Seraphim, Descending, and Star-Weaver), captures the exact moment this mythic bridge materializes out of the morning dew, challenging the viewer to cross over.

My studio process for this piece was intentionally structured around the concept of atmospheric condensation. Rather than imposing a rigid anatomical form upon the canvas and painting an environment around it, I wanted the stag to emerge organically from the very molecules of the landscape. The environment had to be completed first—a deep primordial earth built from heavy, moss-like teals and rich emerald greens, contrasted by a sky trapped in the bruised salmon and warm ochre tones of transitional twilight. This color theory mirrors the split-complementary energies of an environment caught between worlds, an ancient glen awakening to an otherworldly frequency.

The Technical Manifestation of Spirit

Painting on a heavy 18" x 24" gallery canvas prepped with specialized watercolor ground provides a distinct physical tooth that heavily dictates the behavior of gouache. This setup allowed me to employ two-step textural variations. For the background hills and atmospheric sky, I utilized a dry-brushed scumbling technique, letting the underlying white ground peek through the loose, fluid layers of pigment. This created a shifting, cloud-like fog that feels active and alive, swirling into a distinct solar halo directly behind the stag’s head.

When the silhouette of the stag was introduced, it was built entirely through high and medium value tones rather than flat, stark white paint. To fully ground the creature within the environment, hues were drawn directly from the surrounding ecosystem. The underbelly, flank, and rear legs catch the warm, reflected light of the salmon horizon, while the bridge of the nose and the crest of the skull are modeled in cool lavenders and mint greens. By using directional, painterly strokes that follow the natural musculature of the form, the stag gains three-dimensional weight while retaining its apparition-like quality. The antlers, kept solid in value to anchor the verticality of the composition, feature delicate horizontal striations of salmon and orange gouache, catching the atmospheric fire like ancient, weathered timber.

The ultimate challenge lay in detailing the head without collapsing into structural realism. In visionary expressionism, over-rendering destroys the sacred presence. The eye was thus reduced to an intentional, dark graphic wedge—a deep teal fracture that remains unblinking and mysterious. The open mouth, caught in the visceral, backward-tilted posture of a traditional wild red deer bellow, is rendered as an empty dark void. He is not merely making a sound; he is a hollowed vessel breathing the landscape’s own ancient energy out into the air.

The true magic of the final session materialized in the execution of the lost-and-found edges and the final value adjustments. There are moments at the easel when a painting ceases to be an exercise in applying pigment to a substrate and begins to dictate its own laws of nature.

When I began the third entry in my Spiritual Messengers Series, I knew I wanted to explore the threshold where cosmic space meets earthly clouds. I wanted to capture an entity that didn't just inhabit an environment, but was actively woven from it.

The result is Star-Weaver.

Setting the Celestial Stage

The journey of Star-Weaver began with a deliberate foundation: prepping the canvas with a watercolor ground to allow subsequent layers to sit on the surface with an intrinsic, breathing luminosity.

My initial intention was to work within a "candied rainbow spectrum"—using a high-altitude atmospheric gradient transitioning from a deep, velvet indigo canopy down into a warm, glowing coral-pink.

In the early sessions, the central figure of the flying unicorn was blocked in as a translucent silhouette. My technical goal was to create a creature that the viewer would immediately perceive as "white," yet achieve this illusion entirely without relying on flat, opaque white paint. Instead, the body is defined by the atmosphere itself, catching the shifting colors and shadows of the world it traverses.

Weighing the Atmosphere

Midway through the process, the canvas demanded a shift in strategy. I felt the atmosphere surrounding the messenger needed more physical weight and energetic presence. Before I could lose myself in the fine details of the head, I stepped back to build up the density of the ether.

By scumbling and texturing the lower third of the canvas, I created rolling, moisture-rich clouds that ground the composition. This added density completely transformed the piece. It gave the unicorn a literal launching pad, turning a flat silhouette into a volumetric, muscular form pushing upward with genuine momentum.

To anchor this light-filled entity, I introduced fluid, ink-like "rivers of color" into the mane and tail—deep, saturated channels of grape, mulberry, and cobalt. These deep strokes sweep through the wind-blown hair, providing the critical structural contrast needed to make the pearlescent glazes of the body pop with an iridescent, holographic sheen.

Cosmic Intention and Scale

The final magic of Star-Weaver lies entirely in its sense of scale and finishing details.

The horn was meticulously built up using multiple layers of a metallic gold wash, anchored into the skull with warmer shadow tones and slashed on its outer edge with a razor-sharp white highlight. It slices through the sky as a sovereign focal point of pure, concentrated light.

Across the deep indigo canopy, I laid down a constellation of cool silver metallic stars over crisp white bases, allowing them to catch the ambient room light and twinkle dynamically as you move past the canvas.

Finally, to stretch the vertical infinity of this universe, I introduced a tiered sense of life. Far below the soaring messenger, tiny bird shapes drift along the right edge, while a larger bird navigates the lower left cloud bank. By establishing these layers, the distance between the earthly mist and the cosmic void becomes staggering.

The Spirit of the Messenger

Star-Weaver is more than a mythical subject; it is an exploration of an ancient, intelligent consciousness translating pure energy into form. It stands as a continuation of my ongoing fascination with our internal spiritual life and the unseen currents that connect us to the infinite.

When challenged to distill the vast, independent spirit of Denison, Texas, into a restrictive ten-by-ten-inch footprint, an artist is forced to bypass the expansive visual clichés of open big-sky landscapes and historic rail yards. A canvas of this scale demands an intimate, concentrated narrative—a singular visual focal point that carries historical weight while speaking gracefully in a collaborative space. For my contribution to the Denison Arts Council’s landmark community mosaic, the answer lay not in stone or iron, but in the twisted, resilient architecture of the grapevine.

Long before Texas was celebrated as a modern frontiersman of domestic viticulture, a quiet genius named Thomas Volney Munson operated a world-renowned experimental vineyard right here in Denison. In the late nineteenth century, when the microscopic phylloxera epidemic pushed the entire European wine industry to the precipice of absolute collapse, it was Munson’s rigorous taxonomy of native North Texan grape rootstocks that offered a biological savior. Shipped across the Atlantic, these rugged, immune Texan roots were grafted beneath historic French vines, literally holding up the lineage of the global wine world from the soil of the Red River basin upward.

To honor this history, my composition brings together two distinct lineages of wild Texan grapes in a dynamic, high-impact macro perspective. I opted for a Post-Modern Impressionist style with a strong Fauvist pulse, leaning into expressive brushwork and bold, non-naturalistic color interactions to mirror the explosive, creative renewal that the new Home for the Arts at 500 West Woodard Street represents for Grayson County.

The canvas is anchored by a sharp diagonal hierarchy. In the lower left, heavy strands of the Post Oak grape (Vitis lincecumii)—the foundational species Munson utilized for his legendary hybrid breeding—cascade downward in dense, tightly bound cluster mounds. I rendered these using deep indigos, midnight blues, and rich, bruised magenta accents that pulse with an inner warmth. This stands in structural contrast to the upper right cluster: a looser, wilder hanging of native Mustang grapes (Vitis mustangensis), built from cool teal-greens and emerald washes that catch a luminous light source.

The visual engine of the piece relies heavily on contrast. Against a high-octane, electric chartreuse background—a choice meant to invoke the unrelenting, baking heat of a Texas summer afternoon—the foliage and fruit are carved out using highly directional, carved brushstrokes rather than over-blended academic rendering. Lyrical, looping tendrils weave between the clusters, adding a rhythmic, whimsical musicality to an otherwise dense botanical landscape.

In developing the piece across multiple intense studio sessions, the great challenge was overcoming the flattening effect of mid-tones. By continuously analyzing the canvas under monochromatic value maps, I progressively carved deep, dark crevices between individual berries using a mix of ultramarine and burnt umber, while dotting the apex of the foremost grapes with sharp, high-value highlights. This instantly granted the fruit a juicy, tactile weight, turning flat geometric circles into dimensional, ripening spheres.

A collaborative mosaic is a beautiful metaphor for a community finding its creative footing. When hundreds of individual ten-by-ten canvasses are locked edge-to-edge on the walls of our new cultural arts center, the absolute black borders of my painting will serve a crucial civic function: they hold the frame, ensuring that the intense vibrancy of Munson’s grapes remains anchored without bleeding into or distracting from the voices of the neighboring local artists.

By sealing the delicate gouache surface with hand-buffed Dorland's Wax Medium, I’ve bypassed the cold barrier of protective framing glass. The result is a tactile, matte, velvet-like surface that invites the public to look closely—to trace the brushstrokes and feel the graphic energy of the piece without facing gallery glare. This week, a fresh tin of Fuumuui Opaque Watercolors arrived on my desk—twenty-four pans ranging from warm wheat tones and soft apricot beiges to deep, velvety pink-purples. Designed specifically with a density that yields exquisite skin tones and structural layers, it demanded immediate exploration. I did what I always do when testing the boundaries of a new medium: I turned to the unlined spread of my Art Sketchbook Journal.

There is a distinct sacredness to the sketchbook journal. Unlike the high-pressure environment of working on a large canvas or heavy vellum for an upcoming regional exhibition, the journal is a private sanctuary. It is an unsold space where errors are not liabilities, but data points. In this particular session, I challenged myself to work entirely within the Fuumuui palette, mapping a loose, flowing 8" x 16" double-page figurative sketch using exclusively a round brush. The experiment was a revelation in weight and edge control, but it also reinforced why my typical, disciplined studio process relies so heavily on a deliberate transition from transparency to opacity.

The Studio Philosophy: Light to Dark, Clear to Matte

In my standard studio practice—whether preparing landscapes for gallery submission or deep-diving into intimate figurative pieces—my approach is architectural. I build from the ground up, moving strictly from light to dark, and from absolute transparency to dense opacity. This strategy allows me to capture a sense of deep, internal luminosity that cannot be replicated by using a single medium alone.

The process always begins with a luminous foundation. I lay down a fluid, glowing first wash using traditional Winsor & Newton transparent watercolors. Because these pigments stain the paper fibers without obscuring them, the white of the surface acts as an internal reflector, casting light back up through the subsequent layers. This initial phase sets the atmosphere, the ambient tone, and the primary high-key values of the piece.

Once this luminous base is dry, the real structural sculpting begins. This is where gouache or the new Fuumuui opaque watercolors enter the conversation. Descending #2 is finished, its edges painted a clean, framing black, containing an energy that spent the last few sessions vibrating between deep space and the heavy pull of the earth.

If the first piece in this series was about the whisper of an arrival, Descending #2 is about the heavy, glorious friction of transition. It is an exploration of what it means to downshift from the infinite, silent aether of the cosmos into the dense, warm atmosphere of our lived experience.

The Iconography of the Messenger

Culturally, we have always assigned the avian form the task of bridging worlds. They are our ultimate environmental emissaries—breathing the thin air of the upper atmosphere while remaining tethered to the nesting grounds of the earth. For this piece, the formal, forward-facing symmetry of a mourning dove served as the anatomical blueprint.

There is a sacred, almost heraldic stillness in a bird coming directly toward the viewer. By using the structural tiers of the mourning dove's fanned wings and tail feathers, the composition gains an immediate, grounded weight. But this is Expressionism doing the heavy lifting. The anatomy is not a cage; it is a launchpad. While the sharp realism of the dark beak and the defined structure of the rich, deep red feet anchor the bird in a tangible reality, the rest of the form is allowed to completely dissolve into pure, radiant brushwork.

Weaving the Cosmic Banner

The thematic spine of this canvas rests at the intersection of science and song, specifically drawing from Carl Sagan’s profound reminder in Cosmos that "We are made of star-stuff," paired with the soulful, terrestrial yearning of Joni Mitchell’s anthem, Woodstock:

"We are stardust / Billion year old carbon / We are golden / Caught in the devil's bargain / And we've got to get ourselves / back to the garden."

To capture this visually, the original plan to fill the breast entirely with deep-space galaxies evolved during the creative process. Instead, the chest is crossed by a diagonal, textured banner of the Milky Way, slashed like a cosmic badge of travel across the deep Prussian Blue core of the bird. This starry ribbon is mirrored below, with spiral galaxies and stellar clusters dropped directly into the tail feathers, drawing the eye in a rhythmic S-curve entirely through the messenger's form.

The messenger does not simply bring us news of the cosmos; it physically carries the universe within its plumage as it descends.

The Creative Process: Navigating Value and Hue

Technically, gouache on a watercolor ground requires a patient, calculated dance. Because the medium reactivates so easily with water, layering deep space over an existing foundation is a lesson in letting the paint rest and cure.

The final session was entirely about establishing dramatic tonal balance:

The Atmospheric Wash: Laying a deep Prussian Blue wash into the upper left corner balanced the heavy value weight of the left wing, anchoring the sky in a dense, velvety void.

The Luminous Halo: This dark wash pushed the high-value, pale yellow halo surrounding the head into brilliant focus, creating an immediate focal point of crowning clarity.

The Thermal Shift: The color temperature moves intentionally from the icy, crystalline Prussian-to-ice-blue gradient of the head, through the dark celestial core, and finally breaks into the explosive, warm golden-yellow light of the lower canvas.

The dark red feet stand at the very bottom of this transition—symbolizing the physical heat and spark of life as a cosmic entity makes contact with the terrestrial plane.

Expanding the Cosmos

As number two in the Spiritual Messengers Series, this painting broadens the horizon for what is to come. These messengers are cultural reminders of our place among the stars, designed to jolt us out of our immediate smog and remind us that we are cogs in something magnificent and turning.

The studio walls are already waiting for the next emissaries to take shape—whether it is the nocturnal value contrasts hidden in the plumage of Hera's Owl and the Raven, the high-contrast light values of the White Stag and White Buffalo, or the dynamic forms of Pegasus and the Unicorn. Each will carry their own piece of the garden, and their own dust from the stars.

A friend recently sent me a social media post by Hunter Biden, reflecting on his journey through addiction and recovery. Moving, raw, and deeply human, his words resonated widely. But as I read them, a quiet realization settled in. I found myself deeply moved by his vulnerability, yet acutely aware of the fork in the road where our paths diverge.

To my friend, I wrote back: “My journey isn’t about recovery. It is more akin to strategic management and awareness of my limitations, triggers, symptoms, etc., to maintain as much functionality as I can on a day-by-day basis.”

This distinction feels vital to explore. In our culture, we love a good recovery arc. We celebrate the triumphant return to a baseline, the "before" and "after" snapshots of healing. But what happens when there is no "after"? What happens when your condition is chronic, your disability is permanent, and your life in its third act is not a race toward a finish line called "wellness," but a daily exercise in negotiation?

For those of us living with chronic conditions and disability, the vocabulary of recovery doesn’t quite fit. We are not returning to an old self; we are continuously adapting to the self we have today.

Recovery vs. Strategic Management

In the world of addiction recovery, the focus is often on sobriety, healing, and rebuilding what was lost. It is a profound, active reclamation of life.

Living with a chronic condition or disability, however, requires a different kind of heroism—one that looks less like a dramatic rescue and more like logistics. It demands a hyper-vigilant, quiet awareness. Every morning begins with a somatic inventory:

• Where are the symptom levels today?

• What are the immediate triggers?

• How do I budget my limited energy to maintain functionality?

​I feel distinct shift that happens in the studio when a canvas demands a larger room to breathe. For my latest creative cycle, I stepped away from the intimate constraints of smaller formats and stood before a blank 18” x 24” gallery canvas. I knew it was time to explore something elemental, symbolic, and deeply tied to our shared expressions of divine connection.

​Today, I am thrilled to welcome you into the studio for a first look at the anchor piece of my new body of work: The Spiritual Messengers Series.

​Shifting the Horizon: From “Seraphim” to a Broader Vision

​When I first laid down the fluid, energetic washes of this painting, my mind was anchored to a very specific celestial identity: Seraphim, the ancient “burning ones.” But as the layers grew, the paint demanded something more expansive.

​I chose to title this inaugural piece Seraphim, but transitioned the overarching collection to the Spiritual Messengers Series.

​This subtle name change is intentional. It broadens the category of interpretation, moving the work away from rigid, traditional ecclesiastical definitions and opening the door to a universal exploration of the unseen forces that connect us. This series is an exploration of the quiet, fierce, and beautiful ways we experience divine connection—intended to inspire a deep love for humanity and all living things.

​Behind the Palette: The Evolution of Seraphim

​In the studio, art is a dialogue between intention and the medium itself. For this piece, the technical journey was an exhilarating exercise in texture, value, and emotional color theory:

• ​The Foundation: To give a large-scale canvas the proper “tooth” for gouache, I prepped the surface with a specialized watercolor ground. This allowed the canvas to behave like heavy multimedia paper, capturing smooth, luminous under-washes while standing up to the heavy physical manipulation that followed.

• ​The Power of Contrast: The figure began as a soft, translucent silhouette melting into a yellow sky. But to give this messenger an unyielding, powerful presence, I introduced a striking visual friction during the final sessions. I loaded my brush with deep, intense Prussian Blue and electric acid green straight from the tube.

  

• ​Dry Impasto Textures: Applying the paint semi-impasto without any thickening mediums allowed the pure pigment to catch the raw texture of the canvas weave. The deep Prussian Blue strokes carved out sharp shadows at the wing intersections and torso, while the acid green at the hem anchored the figure violently and beautifully into the sweeping terrain.

• ​The Triple Vortex: Compositionally, the piece centers on a rhythmic trinity. The two swirling celestial vortexes in the sky find their echo directly in the figure’s heart center—a localized blue-grey and gold spiral that acts as a conduit of pure energy.

​The Value Layer

​To ensure the emotional weight of the Fauvist color palette was supported by a rock-solid structural foundation, I constantly evaluated the canvas through a grayscale lens. Stripping the color away revealed exactly how the high-value halo and wing discs pushed forward against the heavy, grounding mid-tones of the cloak.

​The Professional Finish: Wax and Edges

​To complete Seraphim, I wrapped the gallery edges in a solid, opaque black. This deep border acts as an absolute zero value, framing the radiant yellows, oranges, and greens, making the canvas appear to emit its own internal light.

​Finally, I sealed the entire surface with Dorland’s Wax Medium. For an artist working with gouache, this is a transformative final step. The wax deepens the values of the Prussian Blue, protects the delicate pigment, and unifies the surface with a sophisticated, low-luster satin sheen reminiscent of ancient encaustics. It is officially ready to hang, frame-free.

​What’s Next on the Easel?

​With Seraphim officially complete and sealed, the momentum in the studio isn’t slowing down. The watercolor ground is drying on the next 18” \times 24” canvas as we speak.

​For the second piece in the Spiritual Messengers Series, I am shifting from the humanoid form to an animal messenger: a dove. But instead of a passive, gentle symbol of peace, this canvas will explore a dynamic, fierce flight mechanic—reminiscent of an eagle or an osprey dropping out of the sky, reaching for a catch. I am eager to see how this juxtaposition of peace and absolute power translates to the canvas.

Creative liberation that comes with shrinking your canvas. This summer, the 517 Gallery in Denison, Texas, issued a fascinating challenge for their upcoming Small on the Wall exhibition: step away from the big picture, leave behind the cumbersome, heavy canvases, and focus entirely on artworks that can fit in the palm of your hand.

My response to this art call is a paired miniature landscape study (6" \times 6" gouache on gallery-wrapped canvas prepped with watercolor ground) exploring the rugged, untamed theater of western North Carolina. Taken together, these two pieces—Roan Rhododendron and Linville Gorge—form a cohesive visual unit that captures the rhythmic, atmospheric cycle of a single wilderness day.

Here is a look inside the studio process, formal analysis, and the philosophical dialogue between these two sister pieces.

Movement I: Morning Fog — Roan Rhododendron

An abundance of blossoms drinking in the mist.

The day begins in the high, quiet altitudes of Roan Mountain, a landscape notoriously wrapped in heavy, humid fog. In Roan Rhododendron, the focus is entirely on the soft, muffled stillness of a mountain morning.

The Palette & Hue: This piece pushes past literal photographic reality into a heightened, Post-Impressionistic color space. The foreground features an abundance of blooming Catawba rhododendrons. Instead of a uniform pink, the blooms are built from vibrant, punchy magentas and rich violet-pinks, capped with fiery, coral-orange highlights that suggest a hidden sun trying to burn through the vapor. The foliage responds with a temperature shift, utilizing deep teals, hunter greens, and unexpected pops of lime-yellow in the midground.

Value & Atmosphere: The upper half of the canvas belongs entirely to the air. Pale blue-grey spruce silhouettes recede rhythmically into a hazy, pastel sky. The values here are compressed, mimicking the natural phenomenon of atmospheric perspective where the damp air acts as a diffusing lens.

Texture & Technique: Gouache behaves beautifully when laid over a textured watercolor ground on canvas. In the sky, dry-brushed, thin washes skim the peaks of the canvas grain to create the weightless illusion of rolling mist. In stark contrast, the foreground flower clusters are sculpted with highly tactile, thick, impasto-like strokes using a fine detail brush, giving the blossoms a dimensional, jewel-like presence.

Movement II: Twilight Exhale — Linville Gorge

The rugged majesty of the ancient canyon.

If the morning is an intake of breath, evening in the Linville Gorge Wilderness is a roaring, operatic exhale. Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," this 12,000-acre protected chasm inside the Pisgah National Forest features a brutal, inaccessible terrain that historically saved its virgin forests from logging. This painting captures that raw friction.

The Palette & Hue: The soft morning pastels are replaced by a fearless, high-saturation twilight sunset inspired by a photograph by Thomas Mabry. The sky is an active theater of electric, fiery vermilion and safety-orange cloud bands that crash against an intense, deep twilight blue. Below, the deep canyon floor plunges 2,000 feet into shadow, rendered in deep, velvety violet-purples and rich teals.

Value & Structure: While Roan Rhododendron uses compressed, soft values, Linville Gorge thrives on high-contrast drama. The sharp diagonal silhouette of Linville Peak cuts cleanly through the square frame. The dark mass of the cliff face is intentionally broken apart; deep, near-black linear fissures sit directly adjacent to brilliant, buttery-yellow highlights on the craggy outcroppings, capturing the final, intense rays of the setting sun.

Composition & Rhythm: The square format turns a sprawling mountain vista into a concentrated burst of energy. The directional, sweeping brushwork in the sky echoes the steep diagonal slope of the ridge, giving the impression of high-altitude winds actively whipping over the canyon rim.

The Studio Dialogue: Creating the Diptych

When placed side-by-side on the studio table, a fascinating visual conversation emerges between these two miniatures. They operate on a system of intentional inversions:

The Weight of the Canvas: Roan Rhododendron pushes its heavy, high-relief textures down into the lower half of the frame, letting the upper half dissolve into ethereal light. Linville Gorge flips this weight—the sky is the center of movement and texture, while the earth drops away into quiet, deep shadow.

The Color Handshake: The two pieces share an identical color DNA, though they remix the melody. The deep violet-purple of the Linville valley floor directly answers the cool undertones of the Roan morning mist, while the blazing orange sunset highlights echo the warm, coral tips of the foreground petals.

The Wave Function: Together, the rising diagonal of the flower fields and the steep plunge of the gorge cliff face form a continuous, undulating wave that sweeps seamlessly across the wall.

The Final Presentation

To honor the intimate, frameless aesthetic of the Small on the Wall exhibition, both pieces have been finished with solid black gallery edges. This creates the illusion of a built-in "floating frame," locking the viewer's eye within the borders of the landscape.

Finally, because gouache is vulnerable to moisture, both surfaces have been sealed with a delicate layer of Dorland’s Wax Medium. Buffed to a subtle, organic satin finish, the wax locks in the deep forest values and vivid magentas without creating a harsh, artificial shine—preserving the raw, tactile connection between the paint, the watercolor ground, and the wilderness itself.

There is a distinct difference between surviving a landscape and becoming part of its weather.

In the studio this week, as I finalized the eighth piece of the Divine Multiples Internal Life Series, I found myself returning to a perspective that Carl Sagan often championed—the idea that we are not passive observers dropped into a finished universe, but a conscious mechanism through which the cosmos experiences itself. When we look inward, we are looking at the same forces that carve out a mountain ridge or accumulate a storm.

Integration #8 is an exploration of that exact threshold: the precise point where the geography of the earth and the architecture of the internal spirit become indistinguishable.

The Canvas Ecosystem

In mapping this internal terrain on an 18" \times 24" gallery canvas, the technical challenge was to capture a state that is simultaneously dynamic, sensual, and serene. It required balancing the raw, muscular energy of a vast, mountainous horizon—untethered to a specific geography, leaving an intentional ambiguity of place—with the quiet iconography of the interior self.

1. The Molten Crest vs. The Atmospheric Weight

The upper registry of the canvas holds a concentrated, electric band of fiery orange and yellow-gold, hugging the monolithic mountain peak. It is a sudden, sharp declaration of light—a visual representation of a breakthrough or a sudden flash of spiritual alignment.

Directly below it sits the counterweight: a dense, churning matrix of gray-blue storm clouds. To look at this sky is to feel the heavy, turbulent processing of thought.

2. The Dissolving Edge

Rather than sitting the central figure cleanly on top of the landscape, Session 2 became a deliberate exercise in atmospheric erosion. By introducing a soft white mist across the right column of the grid, the hard lines of the skeletal tree trunk and the background shrubbery were partially obscured.

The figure—clothed in a deep, cool blue-green cloak—does not merely inhabit the space; its right edge bleeds directly into the fog. It is weathered by its environment, fully integrated into the atmospheric currents.

3. Embers in the Grass

Moving away from literal, petaled botany, the foreground flowers were realized as hot coals of color.

These deep orange, amber, and ochre pulses of light nestle into a dense, vertical bed of wheat and gold tall grasses. By mimicking the specific heat of the sunset crown, these glowing embers pull the warmth down through the sweeping diagonal of the hillock, completing a cyclical color harmony. A few larger, saturated "coals" bleed off the bottom gray-blue stones, instantly pulling the viewer onto the ridge. We are not looking at the overlook; we are standing on it.

The Iconography of the Center

At the heart of this turbulent weather stands the figure, occupying the quiet center of prayer.

"We must love one another or die," W.H. Auden famously wrote, a reminder of the absolute necessity of internal reconciliation. The figure in Integration #8 is that reconciliation personified.

By keeping the facial features to a minimalist, calligraphic suggestion of gray-blue line work laid over a bone-dry layer of pale yellow-cream, the identity remains universal. The features are tied directly to the local color of the storm clouds above. The structural folds of the cloak fall with an intuitive, organic momentum, echoing the radiating geometry of the earlier pieces in this series.

The heavy lifting is complete. The canvas is dry, the t’s are crossed, the i’s are dotted, and the Certificate of Authenticity is set on the reverse.

There is a distinct moment in the lifespan of a thematic series where the visual language must pivot. If the early movements of an internal exploration are about navigating the friction, the fracturing, and the heavy labor of self-awareness, the later works must answer a different question: What happens when the dust finally settles?

In my latest series, Divine Multiples / Internal Life, the sixth piece, Transformation, served as a kinetic, intense anchor. It was a canvas dominated by the labor of shifting. Coming out of that energy, the seventh painting demanded a deliberate arrival into purity, minimalism, and light.

I want to take you inside the studio process of bringing this penultimate chapter to life: The Transcendent Spirit.

The Concept: From Chrysalis to Portal

The number seven has long carried the weight of completion, rest, and awakening. For this piece, I envisioned an abstract, minimalist femme line figure—a form stripped of unnecessary noise, leaving only raw emotional resonance.

The conceptual heart of the piece relies on a direct visual bridge to the painting that preceded it. In the previous movement of the series, a heavy, intricate night garden held a suspended, glowing chrysalis. In The Transcendent Spirit, that chrysalis has opened. It has evolved into a luminous, silver-white portal positioned directly over the figure's heart center, radiating pure, untamed energy outward across the canvas.

Technical Specifications & Environment

Dimensions: 18" x 24"

Surface: Stretched canvas prepared with watercolor ground to beautifully bind the paint to the surface.

Medium: 100% Gouache. No other mediums were introduced, relying entirely on the opaque, matte brilliance of the gouache to carry the weight of the atmosphere.

The Palette: A high-vibration environment built on an ombré gradient. The upper 75% of the canvas vibrates with an electric acid-lime and ice-green aura that melts into ice blue. The final 25% of the canvas plunges into a dense, grounding subterranean base of cobalt and midnight Prussian blue.

The Art Process: Tuning the Vortex

Phase 1: Locking the Atmosphere

The process began not with the figure, but with the environment. Utilizing the absorbent watercolor ground to give the canvas a velvety, highly receptive tooth, I laid down the initial gradient pass. Rather than a flat, horizontal ombré, the brushwork took on an organic, counter-clockwise swirling motion. Under the natural light of the studio, this created a nesting egg or atmospheric vortex—an environment that felt alive and churning before a single anatomical line was drawn.

Phase 2: The Priming of the Heart

To ensure the central light source retained absolute clarity, I blocked out the circular heart vortex using a heavy, sculptural layer of titanium white gouache. Because watercolor ground remains highly receptive, this thick primer coat was essential. It acted as an impenetrable shield, keeping the underlying background blues from bleeding into or muddying the pure, incandescent ivory and white core.

Phase 3: Fluidity and the Happy Accident

The figure itself is defined by minimalist, sweeping contour lines pulled across the dry panel using a fluid rigger brush. The anatomy undergoes a value inversion: starting at the top right, a crisp Prussian blue line defines the head and shoulder against the light background, while the lower body transitions into pale ice-blue lines as the legs fold into the dark cobalt floor.

During this session, a beautiful, intuitive shift occurred. A deep Prussian blue brushstroke on the right side of the torso—originally intended to map out the shoulder and arm—took on a powerful, feathered, flame-like texture.

Rather than correcting it, I allowed the gouache to speak. I leaned into the form, leaving it as a tucked, protective wing, and countered it by unfurling a massive, sweeping open wing on the left that cuts across the negative space. This asymmetrical duality—one wing heavy and remembering the dark work of the past, one wing light and opening into flight—became the definitive soul of the painting.

Value Analysis and Structural Success

When checking the value mapping of a minimalist piece, desaturating the image to black-and-white is the ultimate truth-teller. A successful composition must hold its structural weight without the seduction of color.

In The Transcendent Spirit, the value study reveals a stark, dramatic visual hierarchy. The lower third provides a heavy, dense subterranean anchor that pushes the figure upward psychologically. By tracing ultra-pale, linear highlights along the crown of the head, the hip, and the leading edge of the left wing, the minimalist silhouette cleanly breaks away from the atmospheric void. The heart portal remains the undisputed, brightest light source on the panel.

The Horizon: Where We Stand

The Transcendent Spirit represents the absolute spiritual apex of this internal journey. The noise has been stripped away; the form has found its flight.

But a spirit cannot remain suspended in the cosmic void forever. By keeping her lower body rooted in that heavy cobalt base, the painting purposefully leaves room for one final movement.

Next, the series will reach its definitive conclusion with an eighth and final painting: Integration. In this final chapter, this exact same seated human figure will return from the heights of ascension, carrying her newfound light back down to earth, nestling herself firmly within a grand, majestic physical landscape.

The internal work is done. The homecoming is next.

In my ongoing exploration of the Divine Multiples Internal Life Series, that shift has fully crystallized in the sixth painting, titled Transformation.

Today, I put the final touches on the canvas, capping off an intense multi-session process of color exploration, textural problem-solving, and symbolic storytelling. I want to take you behind the easel to break down the specifications, the formal mechanics, and exactly where this piece sits in the wider arc of the series.

The Specifications

Medium: Gouache on canvas

Surface Preparation: Custom watercolor ground layered over traditional gesso to create an ultra-absorbent, paper-like tooth.

The Formal Breakdown: A Critique & Analysis

To truly see how the light and weight are balanced in Transformation, I often rely on a black-and-white tonal check during the painting process. Seeing the canvas stripped of its color reveals the raw, underlying skeletal structure of the piece.

Hue & The Fauvist Shift

The temperature of this piece is anchored by a highly pigmented, surreal acid blue. By scrubbing this intense hue over an initial pale, green-white aura, the center of the canvas achieves a vibrant, bioluminescent glow. This radioactive turquoise behaves as a supernatural entity when placed against the cool, ink-like depth of a Prussian blue night sky. The color palette intentional avoids naturalism, leaning heavily into a Fauvist tradition where color acts as direct emotional and psychological resonance.

Value & The Central Core

When analyzing the tonal structure, the value scale is pinned at its absolute highest point by a stark, opaque white portal shape. Positioned precisely beneath the structural triangle at the top of the chrysalis shell, this pure white core provides a dramatic focal anchor. Because gouache dries completely matte, this dense pigment pushes forward as a piercing tear in the landscape. To support this blinding core, the shadows nestled deep within the lower-left leaf cluster have been pushed to an absolute dark value, maximizing the optical illusion of radiant, emitted light.

Composition, Asymmetry, and Precision Linework

The narrative tension of Transformation relies entirely on its 2/3 asymmetrical layout. The left side of the canvas is dominated by a heavy, towering mass of abstract shrubbery that feels ancient and wild. In contrast, the right-side vegetation slopes downward gracefully, creating an open pocket of negative sky to isolate the chrysalis at a precise 1/8 scale.

A looping, dark vine tendril arches from the right, acting as a graphic frame that anchors the delicate vessel to the natural world. Every leaf tip facing the chrysalis catches sharp yellow and electric highlights, mapping the physical trajectory of the internal glow.

Technical Evolution: From Salt to Silver

While my initial studio plans leaned toward using salt crystals to create a textured, unpredictable star field, the final iteration demanded absolute design control. Using a micro-pointed detail brush at a vertical 90-degree angle, I hand-painted individual stars and clustered constellations using a custom blend of permanent white and metallic silver. This material interaction introduces a dynamic shimmer that catches changing ambient room light, contrasting beautifully with the flat, velvety matte body of the background gouache.

Fitting into the Divine Multiples Internal Life Series

The Divine Multiples Internal Life Series has always been an interrogation of what is kept hidden versus what is brought to light—the secret alchemies of the interior self.

As the sixth entry, Transformation acts as a literal turning point for the series' narrative arc. The chrysalis is nature's ultimate symbol of radical restructuring: an organism must completely dissolve its old architecture to build its new form.

By shrinking the focal point to an intimate 1/8 scale but giving it the absolute brightest, highest-contrast value on the canvas, the painting visually argues that the most profound changes start from a tiny, localized inner spark. It isn't the vast night sky or the sprawling, heavy shrubbery that dictates the atmosphere of this world—it is the quiet, glowing epicentre of the chrysalis.

Transformation brings a sharp, illustrative, and deeply surrealist clarity to the collection, bridging the gap between the wild environments we inhabit and the internal landscapes we carry within ourselves.
