Beautiful People of God,

We have just finished walking through the Book of Nahum. Three chapters. Three days of prayer. And this book is Nineveh’s second story, which is why it landed so powerfully right after our walk through Jonah. In Jonah’s day, the great city repented at one short sermon and God relented in mercy. But more than a century passed, and the repentance of one generation did not become the righteousness of the next. Assyria returned to her cruelty, destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel, and terrorized the nations. Nahum carries the final verdict, and his name tells us who the book is really for. Nahum means comfort, and the end of the oppressor is the comfort of the oppressed.

The Stronghold

Nahum 1 opens by declaring both edges of God’s character, the truths our generation keeps trying to separate. God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth, and in the same breath, the LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. Slow to anger, and Nineveh received more than a hundred years of that slowness. But slow to anger has never meant never angry. Mercy delayed judgment. It did not cancel justice.

Then comes the LORD Himself, His way in the whirlwind and the storm, the clouds the dust of His feet, mountains quaking, hills melting. And in the center of the storm shines one of the most beloved verses in all the prophets: The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. The same power that terrifies His enemies is the refuge of His people, and the most tender word is knoweth. The God of the whirlwind knows, personally and by name, every soul that trusts in Him. The chapter ends at sunrise, with beautiful feet upon the mountains bringing good tidings and publishing peace, the very image Paul lifted into the gospel age, because every believer who carries the good news of Jesus Christ is running that mountain road, announcing that the tyrant is defeated.

The Fall

Nahum 2 shows the unbeatable city falling in real time. The chariots rage in the streets like torches, the gates of the rivers are opened, the palace dissolves, and the city that gathered the peoples like waters into a pool drains away, her officers crying stand, stand, while no one looks back. The verdict tolls in three words: she is empty, and void, and waste. The city that emptied nations is empty.

Assyria’s own emblem was the lion, carved proudly on her palace walls, and God holds the emblem over the ruins: Where is the dwelling of the lions, that filled his holes with prey? No answer comes back. And then the one sentence that explains the whole collapse: Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts. Five words outweigh a thousand years of walls, armies, and terror. Nineveh did not fall primarily to the Babylonians and the Medes. She fell to the sentence. When God is against a power, its fall is only a matter of scheduling. And when God is for His people, no den of lions built against them will stand.

The Woe

Nahum 3 pronounces the final woe and names the empire’s deepest sin. Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not. And beneath the violence, God names the trade: the wellfavoured harlot that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. Assyria trafficked in peoples, deporting populations, breaking families, merchandising human lives. It is the same trade we have traced from Joel and Amos all the way to the souls of men in Babylon’s cargo list, and here an entire empire is judged for it by name. Every cry from every people she whipped, chained, and sold entered the ears of the LORD, and this book is His answer.

Every false security is then stripped away. Her strongholds fall like ripe figs shaken into the mouth of the eater. Her merchants, multiplied above the stars of heaven, scatter like locusts at sunrise, their place not known. And the book closes with the nations clapping their hands at the news of her fall, with the question that justifies it all: upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually? It is the only prophecy in Scripture that ends with the world applauding, because there was no people her cruelty had not touched.

Where We Stand As God’s People

As Prayer Warriors for Life, Nahum gives us three certainties to stand on. First, the LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows us by name. The storm that levels the oppressor shelters the trusting, and which face of God’s power we see is decided at the door of the Stronghold. Second, revival received is not revival kept. Nineveh’s story warns us that yesterday’s repentance cannot cover today’s rebellion, and calls us to walk with God daily rather than rest on the turnings of the past. Third, God sees every empire, ancient or modern, that profits from human prey. The trade in souls did not end with Nineveh, and this book assures the exploited of every generation that their cries are heard, their oppressors are appointed an end, and their God is against everything that is against them.

The book named comfort ends exactly there. The fall of the bloody city is the comfort of every people she oppressed, and the God who spared Nineveh when she repented is the same God who ended her when she made cruelty her permanent trade. Slow to anger. Great in power. Good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. And He knoweth them that trust in Him.

In verse 1 the prophet takes his position. I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved. This verse is a portrait of how faith handles unanswered questions. Habakkuk has asked God something enormous, how the Holy One can use wicked Babylon against His own people, and rather than abandoning the conversation or forcing his own conclusion, he climbs the watchtower and waits. He expects an answer. He even expects correction, what I shall answer when I am reproved. Questioning God honestly and then waiting expectantly for His reply is not rebellion. It is the discipline of the watchman.

In verses 2 and 3 the answer begins with instructions about the answer. And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Write it, God says, and write it plainly, so plainly that a courier can read it at a run and carry it to others. The vision is not for Habakkuk alone. It is for distribution. And it comes with a timestamp, an appointed time, and a guarantee, it shall speak and not lie, it will surely come. The tarrying is inside the appointment, not outside it. Delay, in God’s economy, is never denial, and every believer who has waited on a promise has lived between verse 3’s though it tarry and its it will not tarry.

In verse 4 comes the hinge of the book and, in a real sense, of the Bible. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith. Two kinds of soul are set side by side. The lifted up soul, proud, self-trusting, embodied in Babylon, is not upright, and its collapse is coming. But the just shall live by his faith, by trust, by steadfast clinging to God through the tarrying. The New Testament quotes this sentence three times, in Romans 1:17 where it announces the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith, in Galatians 3:11 where it proves that no man is justified by the law, and in Hebrews 10:38 where it strengthens believers to endure without shrinking back. When Martin Luther grasped this verse, the Reformation followed. The answer to Habakkuk’s agonized question about God’s timing and God’s instruments turns out to be a way of life: the righteous do not live by having every answer. They live by faith in the God who has them.

In verses 5 through 8 the first woe falls on the plunderer. Babylon is pictured as a proud man who enlargeth his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people. Against him the spoiled nations will take up a taunt: Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? The empire’s own how long, answered at last. Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land. The plunderer will be plundered by the remnant of his own victims, the exact reversal Nahum pronounced over Nineveh.

In verses 9 through 11 the second woe falls on the self-secured. Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! The empire builds its nest high, like the eagle of Obadiah’s Edom, believing altitude is safety. But the materials of the nest testify against the builder: For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. Walls built with plundered stone and blood-bought timber become witnesses for the prosecution. What we build with unrighteousness testifies against us from inside our own houses.

In verses 12 through 14 the third woe falls on the city built with blood, and the promise at its center outshines everything. Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity! This is the very charge Micah 3:10 laid against Jerusalem’s leaders, now laid against Babylon itself, one standard for covenant city and pagan empire alike. The peoples labour in the very fire, and weary themselves for very vanity, every blood-built thing is fuel in the end. And then, rising out of the middle of the woes like the mountain of Micah 4 rising from the plowed field: For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. The empires exhaust themselves for vanity, and the knowledge of God’s glory covers the earth like an ocean. This is where history is going. Not toward Babylon’s tower, but toward a world as saturated with the glory of God as the seabed is saturated with water.

In verses 15 through 17 the fourth woe falls on the degrader, him that giveth his neighbour drink to look on their nakedness, the empire that intoxicates and strips its victims for sport and shame. The cup comes back around: the cup of the LORD’s right hand shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shall be on thy glory. Those who poured out shame will drink it. And in verses 18 and 19 the fifth woe falls on the idolater, with a satire worthy of Isaiah: What profiteth the graven image...? Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. The empire commands its idols to wake, and nothing wakes, because there is no breath in them. Gold plating cannot supply lungs.

And then verse 20 closes the chapter with one of the great contrasts of Scripture. But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him. The idols are breathless, but the LORD is enthroned. The questions have been asked, the woes pronounced, the vision written, and now the only fitting response is silence, not the silence of an absent God, but the hush of a full courtroom when the Judge is seated. Habakkuk began the book shouting how long. He ends this chapter with his hand over his mouth before the throne, and in the next chapter, the silence will turn into one of the most magnificent prayers of faith ever written.

The vision is for an appointed time, though it tarry, wait for it, and the just shall live by his faith. What promise or vision has been tarrying in your life? How does it change the waiting to know that the delay is inside God’s appointment, and that righteousness in the tarrying season looks like continuing to live by faith?

The five woes fall on plunder, false security, blood-building, degradation, and breathless idols, and in the middle of them God promises that the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. When the Babylons of our world dominate the headlines, how does this promise reset your perspective? And what part is your life playing in the covering of the earth with the knowledge of His glory? In verses 2 through 4 comes the first complaint, and it is the cry of every believer who has watched evil prosper. O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth. Habakkuk’s complaint is not abstract theology. He is describing his own nation. Violence everywhere, the law paralyzed, courts that never deliver justice, the righteous surrounded by the wicked. And his question is not whether God exists but why God waits. How long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? Scripture does not rebuke him for asking. The question itself becomes the word of God for every generation that has prayed against injustice and heard silence.

In verses 5 through 11 God answers, and the answer is more shocking than the silence was. Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for I will work a work in your days, which ye will not believe, though it be told you. God is not idle. He is working a work so unbelievable that hearing it told will not be enough to make it credible. And then the work is named. For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces that are not theirs. The Chaldeans are Babylon. God’s answer to injustice in Judah is to raise up a nation more unjust still, and the description spares nothing. They are terrible and dreadful: their judgment and their dignity shall proceed of themselves. Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves... they shall fly as the eagle that hasteth to eat. They shall come all for violence... and they shall gather the captivity as the sand. And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it. Leopards, wolves, and eagles, the fastest and fiercest predators of land and sky, and a military machine that laughs at kings and buries fortresses. The closing line of the description names their deepest corruption: Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power unto his god. Babylon credits its own might as its deity. Power is its god. Centuries later, Paul would quote verse 5 in Acts 13:41 as a warning against unbelief in the face of God’s unbelievable work, for the God who raised up the Chaldeans also raised up His Son, and both works staggered those who heard them told.

In verses 12 through 17 Habakkuk responds with the second and deeper question, but notice where he begins. Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction. Before he questions God’s method, he anchors himself in God’s character. Everlasting. My God. My Holy One. And he draws the covenant conclusion, we shall not die, Babylon is ordained for judgment and established for correction, not for annihilation. This is how faith questions, from inside the relationship, standing on what it knows while asking about what it cannot understand. Then the question itself: Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? If God is too pure to look upon evil, how can He use a nation more wicked than Judah to punish Judah? How can the Holy One hold His tongue while the wicked devours the man more righteous than he?

The chapter closes with one of Scripture’s most haunting images of predatory empire. And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad. Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous. Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations? Babylon treats humanity as fish, hooked, netted, dragged, and consumed, peoples reduced to catch. And the fishermen worship their own nets, burning incense to the very instruments of their exploitation, because the nets make their portion fat. It is the self worship of every predatory power in history, sacrificing to its own economy, its own military, its own methods. And Habakkuk’s final question hangs over the chapter unanswered: shall they empty their net and fill it again forever? Will the slaughter simply continue? The chapter ends without God’s reply, and that is deliberate, for in the first verse of chapter two Habakkuk will climb his watchtower and wait for the answer, and the answer, when it comes, will contain one of the most important sentences in the entire Bible.

God’s answer was already in motion, I will work a work in your days which ye will not believe though it be told you, but the work involved an instrument Habakkuk would never have chosen. When has God answered a prayer of yours in a way you did not expect or would not have chosen? How did you learn to trust the Worker before you understood the work?

What truths about God do you anchor in before you bring Him your confusion? In verses 1 through 3 the woe is pronounced and the streets are shown. Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not. Three charges in one verse, blood, lies, and robbery, and the chilling note that the prey departeth not, the predation never pauses. Then the sounds and sights of Assyrian warfare pour through the verses. The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots. The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses. This is what Nineveh sounded like to the nations, whips and wheels and hooves, and what she left behind, corpses without end. The prophet makes the hearer walk through it, stumbling on the bodies, so that no one can call the coming judgment excessive.

In verses 4 through 7 the root sin is named, and it reaches beyond violence into commerce. Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. Nineveh is pictured as a beautiful harlot and sorceress, alluring and enslaving, and the charge is precise: she selleth nations, and selleth families. Assyria trafficked in peoples, deporting whole populations, breaking up families, and merchandising human lives across her empire. It is the same trade we have traced from Amos and Joel to the souls of men in Babylon’s cargo list, and here an entire empire is judged for it by name. Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, the sentence of chapter two repeated, and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame. The empire that exposed and humiliated nations will be exposed before them. And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock. And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and shall say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee? The city that comforted no one will find no comforters.

In verses 8 through 11 the prophet demolishes Nineveh’s confidence with history. Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea? Populous No is Thebes, the magnificent Egyptian city on the Nile, defended by waters, allied with Ethiopia and Egypt, Put and Lubim. Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. And who destroyed Thebes? Assyria herself, within living memory. Nahum’s argument is devastating: you are not better defended than the city you yourself destroyed, and what you did to her children and her great men is the measure now coming to you. Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.

In verses 12 through 17 every security is shaken and scattered. All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater. The fortresses that looked so formidable are ripe figs, one shake and they drop into the eater’s mouth. Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars. Draw water for the siege, tread the mortar, make the brick kilns strong, the prophet taunts, prepare all you like, there shall the fire devour thee. Even her famed commerce evaporates. Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away. Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are. Merchants beyond counting, officials thick as locusts in the cold morning, and at sunrise, gone, their place unknown. Wealth built on predation has no loyalty and leaves no forwarding address.

In verses 18 and 19 the book closes with a lament that no one will echo. Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them. The empire’s shepherds sleep the sleep of death, and the scattered are never regathered. There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous. And then the last verse of the book turns to the whole listening world: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually? When the news of Nineveh’s fall spreads, the nations will applaud, because there was no people her cruelty had not touched. It is the only place in Scripture where a prophecy ends with the world clapping, and the question that closes the book is its own justification. Upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually? The Book of Nahum, whose author’s name means comfort, ends exactly there, because the end of the oppressor is the comfort of every people she oppressed. The God who spared Nineveh in Jonah’s day when she repented is the same God who ended her when she made cruelty her permanent trade. Slow to anger, great in power, and He will not at all acquit the wicked.

Nineveh is judged as the harlot that selleth nations and families, an empire that trafficked in human beings, the same trade we have traced from Joel and Amos to Revelation 18, and one that still exists in our world today. Nineveh trusted her walls, her armies, her merchants multiplied above the stars, and all of it scattered like locusts at sunrise, while the psalmist promises that the steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and that none who trust in Him shall be desolate. In verses 1 and 2 the attacker appears and the reason is given. He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily. The commands are ironic. Nineveh is told to man her defenses, guard the road, and gather all her strength, and none of it will matter. For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches. Here is the moral ledger behind the military event. Assyria emptied Israel, and now the Emptier of nations will be emptied. God is restoring the glory of His people by removing the power that stripped them.

In verses 3 through 5 the assault is painted in color and speed. The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation. The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings. Red shields, scarlet uniforms, chariots flashing through the streets like torches and lightning. Nineveh’s defense scrambles, he shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk, the empire’s famous soldiers stumbling as they run to the wall.

In verses 6 through 8 the city falls by water and word. The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved. Ancient accounts of Nineveh’s fall in 612 BC record that flooding of the river helped breach the defenses of the city that sat proudly on the Tigris. The gates of the rivers opened, and the palace, the symbol of Assyrian permanence, dissolved. And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts. The queen, or the city personified as queen, is led away while her maids mourn like doves, beating their breasts. But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back. The city that gathered the peoples like waters into a pool now drains away, her soldiers deserting, her officers shouting stand, stand, and no one so much as looks back.

In verses 9 and 10 the plundering and the emptiness. Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture. The wealth of a hundred conquered nations is carried out of her treasuries by her conquerors. And then the verdict in three hollow words: She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness. In Hebrew the three words toll like a bell, bukah, umebukah, umebullakah, emptiness, desolation, devastation. The city that emptied nations is empty.

In verses 11 through 13 the taunt and the explanation. Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid? The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin. Assyria’s own kings loved the lion as their symbol, carving lion hunts on their palace walls. Nahum takes their emblem and holds it over the ruins. Where is the den now? Where is the pride that tore nations to feed its cubs and filled its caves with prey? The question expects silence. And then the final verse gives the only explanation the fall of such a power requires: Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard. Behold, I am against thee. Five words from the LORD of hosts outweigh a thousand years of walls, armies, and terror. Nineveh did not fall primarily to the Babylonians and the Medes. She fell to the sentence. When God is against a power, its fall is only a matter of scheduling, and when God is for His people, no den of lions built against them will stand.

What do you think about Nahum 2? The chapter shows the most feared city on earth emptied in a day, with the explanation given in one sentence, Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts. What does this chapter teach you about how God deals with powers that seem permanent and unbeatable?

The psalmist counsels, fret not thyself because of evildoers, for they shall soon be cut down like the grass. Where are you tempted to fret over evil that seems to be winning, in the world, in your workplace, or in your own story? How does watching Nineveh drain away like a pool of water strengthen your patience with God’s timing?

Assyria’s emblem was the lion, and God asked over the ruins, where is the dwelling of the lions? Every power and every person builds some kind of den. What is your den built from, and who does it feed? If the LORD examined it today, would He find prey taken from others, or provision shared with others? Prayer Warrior for Life.

In verses 2 and 3 the character of God is declared with both edges showing. God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked. These verses quote the ancient confession of Exodus 34, the same confession Jonah once hurled at God in anger, but Nahum completes the half Jonah left out. Slow to anger, yes, and Nineveh received more than a hundred years of that slowness. But slow to anger has never meant never angry, and great in power has never meant indifferent to evil. The LORD will not at all acquit the wicked. Mercy delayed judgment. It did not cancel justice.

In verses 3 through 6 the LORD’s coming is described in creation shaking terms. The LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry. The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence. Storm clouds are merely the dust His feet kick up as He walks. The sea that drowned Pharaoh’s army dries at His rebuke. Bashan, Carmel, and Lebanon, the most fertile and glorious regions of the land, languish before Him. And the chapter asks the only sensible question: Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. If the mountains cannot stand, Nineveh’s walls certainly cannot.

In verse 7 the storm parts, and one of the most beloved verses in the prophets shines through. The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. This verse is not an interruption of the chapter’s message. It is the other half of it. The same power that makes God terrifying to His enemies makes Him an impregnable refuge for His people. And the most tender word is knoweth. The God of the whirlwind knows, personally and by name, every soul that trusts in Him. In the day of trouble, His people are not outside watching the storm. They are inside the Stronghold.

In verses 8 through 14 the sentence on Nineveh is pronounced. But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof. What do ye imagine against the LORD? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time. Nineveh had imagined evil against the LORD, and from her had come forth a wicked counsellor imagining mischief. Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down. Numbers and strength will not save her. And then the LORD turns to Judah with the tenderest promise in the chapter: For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder. The fall of the oppressor is the liberation of the oppressed. For Nineveh, a grave is commanded, and no more of thy name be sown, the empire that erased nations will be erased. History records the fulfillment with sobering precision. Nineveh fell in 612 BC, and so completely did it vanish that within centuries its very location was forgotten until archaeologists uncovered it in modern times.

In verse 15 the chapter ends at sunrise. Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off. While judgment falls on the bloody city, a runner is already crossing the mountains toward Judah carrying good news, the oppressor is finished, keep your feasts, perform your vows, worship freely again. Isaiah saw the same beautiful feet, and Paul lifted the image into the gospel age, how beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things (Romans 10:15). Every believer who carries the good news of Jesus Christ is running the mountain road of Nahum 1:15, announcing to captives that the tyrant is defeated and peace has been published.

What do you think about Nahum 1? This book announces judgment on the same Nineveh that repented in Jonah’s day, more than a century earlier. What does the pairing of Jonah and Nahum teach you about the mercy and the justice of God, and about the difference between a moment of repentance and a life of repentance?

The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him, stands in the middle of a chapter about mountains melting and rocks thrown down. How have you experienced God as a stronghold in your own days of trouble? What does it mean to you that the God of the whirlwind knows you by name?

Verse 15 shows beautiful feet on the mountains bringing good tidings and publishing peace while judgment falls on the oppressor. Whose feet brought the good news to you, and to whom are your feet carrying it now? Is there someone in your life still living under a yoke who needs to hear that the LORD breaks yokes and bursts bonds asunder? Prayer Warrior for Life.

In verses 1 through 6 Micah laments the collapse of faithfulness around him. Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the vintage: there is no cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit. The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net. The prophet feels like a gleaner walking a vineyard after harvest, finding nothing. Faithful people have become that scarce. The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is sharper than a thorn hedge. Even the best of society wounds whoever comes near. Princes and judges ask for rewards, the great man utters his mischievous desire, and corruption is woven up together. And then the collapse reaches the last refuge, the home. Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom. For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house. When a society rots from the top, the rot finally enters the household, and Jesus Himself quoted these very words when He warned His disciples what following Him would cost in divided homes (Matthew 10:35-36). Micah’s loneliness is the loneliness of the faithful in every corrupt generation.

In verse 7 the book pivots on a single word. Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me. Therefore. Because the times are dark, not in spite of it, the prophet turns his face upward. Three resolves in one verse, I will look, I will wait, my God will hear me. When there is no cluster in the field and no trust in the house, there is still a God who hears, and the certainty of that last clause, my God will hear me, is the bedrock the rest of the chapter builds on.

In verses 8 through 10 comes the warrior’s confession, words that generations of believers have carried into their darkest seasons. Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. The believer does not claim to never fall or never sit in darkness. The claim is what happens next, I shall arise, the LORD shall be a light unto me. Then verse 9 models something rare, repentance without despair. I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness. Micah owns his sin honestly, accepts God’s discipline without bitterness, and trusts the very Judge who disciplines him to also be the Advocate who pleads his cause and brings him to the light. The enemy who asked, Where is the LORD thy God? will see the answer and be ashamed.

In verses 11 through 15 the promise widens. In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be removed far away. The walls will rise again, and people will come from Assyria and from the fortified cities, from sea to sea and mountain to mountain. The prophet prays, Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine heritage, and the LORD answers with an exodus sized promise: According to the days of thy coming out of the land of Egypt will I shew unto him marvellous things. The God of the first exodus commits to marvels of the same magnitude again. The nations shall see and be confounded at all their might, licking the dust like a serpent, moving out of their holds, and fearing because of the LORD our God.

In verses 18 through 20 the book ends in doxology, and it begins with a question that is also the author’s signature. Micah’s name in Hebrew means Who is like the LORD?, and the final movement of his book asks and answers it. Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. Among all the gods of the nations, gods of appeasement and fear and payment, there is none like this, a God whose defining delight is mercy. He does not forgive grudgingly. Mercy is His pleasure. He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. Three verbs of grace, He turns toward us, He subdues our iniquities like a conquered enemy, and He casts our sins into the depths of the sea, the deepest burial the ancient world could imagine, a place from which nothing is ever retrieved. And the final verse anchors it all in covenant: Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old. The book that began with mountains melting under the descending LORD ends with sins sinking under the sea of His mercy, and the last word is a promise sworn from the days of old and kept to this day. Who is a God like unto Thee? After seven chapters, the only possible answer is worship.

What do you think about Micah 7? The book moves from the LORD descending in judgment in chapter one to sins cast into the depths of the sea in the final verses. Looking back over all seven chapters, what has the Book of Micah shown you about the character of God?

Micah’s therefore in verse 7 turns the darkest description of society into resolve, I will look unto the LORD, I will wait for the God of my salvation, my God will hear me. When the faithlessness of the culture, or even of your own household, presses in on you, which direction does it usually turn you? What would it look like to make Micah’s therefore your own this week?

God does not merely forgive our sins, He delights in mercy and casts our sins into the depths of the sea. Are there forgiven sins you keep diving after, old guilt you drag back up from depths God has already buried? And is there mercy you have received from God that He is now asking you to extend to someone in your own house? Prayer Warrior for Life.

In verses 1 and 2 the court is convened and creation is called to the jury box. Hear ye now what the LORD saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice. Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’s controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel. The mountains and the foundations of the earth are summoned as witnesses because they were present at the covenant, older than the nation, unable to be bribed. The LORD hath a controversy, a legal case, and He Himself will argue it.

In verses 3 through 5 the LORD opens His case, and the tone is not thunder but wounded love. O my people, what have I done unto thee? and wherein have I wearied thee? testify against me. The Judge invites the accused to bring charges against Him if any exist. Then He retells the story. For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what Balak king of Moab consulted, and what Balaam the son of Beor answered him from Shittim unto Gilgal; that ye may know the righteousness of the LORD. Redemption from slavery, leaders provided, a hired curse turned into blessing, the Jordan crossed into the promise. The case for God is simply the memory of God’s faithfulness, and the charge against Israel is, at bottom, forgetfulness.

In verses 6 and 7 the worshipper responds with escalating offers. Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? The bidding rises from the ordinary to the absurd to the unthinkable, calves, then thousands of rams, then rivers of oil, then a firstborn child, the darkest currency of the pagan nations. The questions expose a whole theology of transaction, the belief that God can be paid, and that the only question is the price.

In verse 8 heaven answers, and the answer has echoed through every generation since. He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? He hath shewed thee, this is not new information but old revelation, already given in the law and the prophets. What is good is not a mystery to be purchased but a path to be walked. Three requirements, and each word is chosen. Do justly, justice is something done, enacted in real dealings with real people, not merely admired. Love mercy, the Hebrew word is chesed, covenant loyal love, and we are not merely to show it but to love showing it, to delight in mercy the way God does. Walk humbly with thy God, and here is the heart of it, the destination of the whole requirement is not a standard but a companionship, a daily walk, taken humbly, with God Himself. Justice toward others, mercy toward others, humility with God, the entire law folded into three phrases, and not one of them can be bought with rams or rivers of oil.

In verses 9 through 12 the LORD’s voice turns to the city and names what He sees. Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the scant measure that is abominable? Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights? For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies. The evidence is commercial and everyday, short measures, rigged scales, a bag of dishonest weights, wealth built on violence, speech built on lies. This is what do justly looks like when it is missing, and God will not count it pure.

In verses 13 through 16 the sentence is futility. Therefore also will I make thee sick in smiting thee, in making thee desolate because of thy sins. Thou shalt eat, but not be satisfied. Thou shalt sow, but thou shalt not reap; thou shalt tread the olives, but thou shalt not anoint thee with oil; and sweet wine, but shalt not drink wine. Life outside the requirement becomes effort without satisfaction, eating that never fills, sowing that never reaps, pressing that yields no oil or wine. The chapter closes by naming the pattern the people chose instead of the LORD’s requirement, for the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels. Omri and Ahab, the dynasty of institutionalized idolatry and the seizure of Naboth’s vineyard, had become the operating manual of the nation. They walked, but in the wrong counsels, and desolation followed. The tragedy of Micah 6 is that the people were always going to walk in something. The only question was whose counsel, and with whom.

What do you think about Micah 6? The chapter opens with God asking, O my people, what have I done unto thee? and closes with a people walking in the counsels of Ahab. What struck you most about the LORD’s way of pleading His case?

The worshipper offers escalating payments, thousands of rams, rivers of oil, even a firstborn, and God answers with three things that cannot be purchased, only lived. Where in your own faith have you been tempted to pay God instead of walk with Him? Which of the three requirements, doing justly, loving mercy, or walking humbly, is the Holy Spirit highlighting for you in this season?

The judgment of this chapter is futility, eating without satisfaction, sowing without reaping. Have you ever lived a season of effort without satisfaction? Looking back, what was God showing you, and how did He use it to bring you back to the walk? Prayer Warrior for Life.

In verse 1 the humiliation is total. Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. Jerusalem is under siege, and her judge, her ruler, is struck across the face with a rod, the ancient gesture of ultimate contempt. Israel’s human leadership has failed and is now publicly humiliated. And readers of the Gospels cannot miss the foreshadowing, for centuries later another Judge of Israel would stand before His accusers, and they smote him with the palms of their hands, and with a rod, the true King absorbing the very humiliation of verse 1 on His way to fulfilling verse 2.

In verse 2 comes the prophecy the whole world knows. But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. Every phrase carries weight. But thou, the great reversal word again, turning from the failed ruler of verse 1 to the coming Ruler of verse 2. Bethlehem Ephratah, named precisely, the town of Ruth and Boaz and the birthplace of David, so small it was not counted among the thousands, the military musters, of Judah. Yet out of thee, because God delights to bring the greatest things through the smallest places. Shall he come forth unto me, the Ruler comes forth for God’s own purpose and pleasure. And then the phrase that lifts this beyond any merely human king: whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. The One born in Bethlehem has been going forth from eternity. His birth is not His beginning. This is the prophecy of a Ruler who enters time from everlasting, and seven hundred years later, when wise men arrived in Jerusalem asking where Christ should be born, the chief priests and scribes answered instantly from this verse, in Bethlehem of Judaea, for thus it is written by the prophet (Matthew 2:5-6). Herod’s own scholars knew the address. God had published it through Micah centuries in advance.

In verse 3 comes the appointed waiting. Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. Israel will be given up for a season, but the season has a boundary, until she which travaileth hath brought forth. The travail imagery of chapter 4 returns, and now we learn what all that labor was bringing forth, a Child. The waiting of centuries, the exile, the silence, all of it ran toward a birth.

In verses 4 and 5 the Ruler is described, and the description is a shepherd’s. And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth. And this man shall be the peace. He stands, permanent and unmovable where human rulers fell. He feeds, for His greatness is exercised in shepherding, not exploiting, the exact opposite of the leaders in chapter 3 who ate the flock. Under Him the people abide, secure and settled. His greatness reaches unto the ends of the earth, far beyond Israel’s borders. And then the four words that gather everything: this man shall be the peace. Not shall bring peace, not shall negotiate peace. He Himself is the peace. Paul wrote the fulfillment plainly, for he is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). The rest of verses 5 and 6 promise that when the Assyrian, the great enemy of Micah’s day and a figure of every invading power since, comes into the land, God will raise up sufficient shepherds and leaders, seven shepherds and eight principal men, fullness and more than fullness, and the enemy will not stand.

In verses 7 through 9 the remnant receives its double portrait. And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not for man, nor waiteth for the sons of men. And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest. The remnant is dew and lion at once. Dew, a quiet refreshing presence among the nations, sent directly from heaven, not waiting for man’s permission or schedule. Lion, an unconquerable strength that no adversary can finally subdue. God’s people in the world are both at the same time, gentle blessing and unbreakable witness, and neither one depends on the approval of the sons of men.

In verses 10 through 15 the chapter closes with a great purging. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee, and I will destroy thy chariots: And I will cut off the cities of thy land, and throw down all thy strong holds: And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers: Thy graven images also will I cut off, and thy standing images out of the midst of thee; and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands. Notice whose things are being cut off, thy horses, thy chariots, thy strongholds, thy witchcrafts, thy images. This is not the destruction of Israel’s enemies but the removal of Israel’s false securities, the military hardware, the fortified self-reliance, the occult shortcuts, and the handmade gods they trusted instead of the LORD. Before the Man who is the peace can be fully enjoyed, everything that competed with Him must go. It is severe mercy, God cutting His people free from every substitute, and the chapter ends with vengeance executed upon the nations that refuse to hear, for the Ruler from Bethlehem will be great to the ends of the earth, and every rival will bow.

What do you think about Micah 5? Seven hundred years before the manger, God named the town, described the Shepherd, and declared that His goings forth were from everlasting. What does it do to your faith to find the coming of Christ announced this precisely in the middle of the minor prophets?

Bethlehem was too little to be counted among the thousands of Judah, yet God chose it for the arrival of the everlasting Ruler. What feels little in your life right now, your influence, your resources, your beginnings? How does this chapter challenge the way you measure significance, and what Bethlehem place might God be choosing in you?

The chapter ends with God cutting off Israel’s horses, chariots, strongholds, soothsayers, and graven images, their false securities rather than their enemies. This Man shall be the peace, but the substitutes had to go first. What false securities might God be cutting away in your life so that Christ Himself, not circumstances, becomes your peace? In verses 1 through 5 comes the vision of the last days. But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. The mountain that judgment plowed under is the mountain glory establishes above every hill. And the nations that once marched against Jerusalem with siege engines now flow to it like a river running uphill, drawn not by conquest but by hunger, teach us of his ways. Then comes the promise the world still quotes without knowing its address. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. When the LORD Himself judges between nations, the weapons industry of the world is converted into agriculture. The sword becomes a plow, the spear becomes a pruning hook, the instruments of death are reforged into instruments of harvest, and war itself is unlearned. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. Peace in Scripture is never merely the absence of war. It is every ordinary family secure in its own place, unafraid, and the guarantee is the speaking mouth of the LORD of hosts. Verse five then plants the resolve that carries God’s people until that day arrives. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever. The nations are not yet flowing. Every people still walks in the name of its own god. But the remnant decides now, in advance of the vision, whose name they will walk in forever.

In verses 6 through 8 the LORD names who He will gather. In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. The building material of the coming kingdom is not the strong but the limping. The word for her that halteth is the word used of Jacob limping from Peniel. God assembles the lame, the driven out, the afflicted, and makes of them the remnant and the strong nation over whom He reigns forever. And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion. The first dominion, the kingdom as it was meant to be from the beginning, comes back to the watchtower of the flock.

In verses 9 and 10 the road to the promise passes through travail and Babylon. Now why dost thou cry out aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished? for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail. Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail: for now shalt thou go forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies. Micah does not pretend the glory comes cheaply. Zion will writhe like a woman in labor, leave her city, camp in the open field, and go all the way to Babylon, named here a century before Babylon was the obvious threat. But the sentence carries its own gospel in the repetition of one word, there. There shalt thou be delivered, there the LORD shall redeem thee. The place of exile is appointed as the place of redemption. And the image of travail transforms the pain itself, for a woman in labor is not dying, she is bringing forth. The pangs are not the end of the story. They are the evidence that something is being born.

In verses 11 through 13 the perspective lifts to show what the gathered enemies cannot see. Now also many nations are gathered against thee, that say, Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion. But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor. The nations think they have gathered themselves against Zion for her destruction. Heaven sees it differently. They have been gathered like sheaves onto a threshing floor. What looks like Zion surrounded is actually the harvest assembled. Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth. The afflicted daughter is not merely rescued, she is armed, horn of iron, hoofs of brass, and the wealth her oppressors gathered by violence is consecrated, devoted, to the Lord of the whole earth. The chapter that began with nations flowing peacefully to the mountain ends with the assurance that until that day, no gathering against God’s people escapes God’s counsel, and even the plunder of Babylon ends up on the altar.

What do you think about Micah 4? Chapter three ended with Zion plowed as a field, and chapter four immediately raises the same mountain above every hill with the nations flowing to it. What does this reversal teach you about how God’s judgment and God’s promises live side by side?

Verse five says all people walk in the name of their own gods, but we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever, a resolve made before the vision is fulfilled. What names does our culture walk in today, and what does it look like practically for you to walk in the name of the LORD while the nations around you walk elsewhere? Are there swords in your own hands, sharp words, old grudges, habits of battle, that God is asking you to beat into plowshares?

God promises Zion, thou shalt go even to Babylon, there shalt thou be delivered. The place of exile becomes the place of redemption, and the travail is labor, not death. Where is your Babylon right now, the hard place you did not choose? How does it change your endurance to believe that God has appointed deliverance there, and that your pangs are birth pangs? I have shared before that alongside our daily reading together, I keep my own personal study practice, and my Bible study group is currently in the New Testament, in the Book of Revelation. It has been fascinating to read the Old Testament daily with you while studying the New Testament at the same time. This week the two met. As I read Micah 3 for our daily reading, my Bible study class was unpacking Revelation 18, and the parallels were too striking to ignore. So I started researching, then writing, and then typing. Here we go.

Micah preached about seven hundred years before Christ. John received Revelation roughly eight centuries after Micah, on the island of Patmos, under a different empire. Yet when you set Micah 3 beside Revelation 18, the same city appears in both, the city built on blood and commerce, and it is described the same way, judged the same way, and answered by the same faithful remnant. Two testaments, two languages, two empires, one Author.

Consider the foundations first. Micah 3:10, it is written the leaders of Jerusalem build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. Revelation closes Babylon’s case file the same way, it is written in Revelation 18:24 in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth. Both cities have blood in the mortar.

Then consider what commerce has swallowed. In Micah, every sacred office has a price. It is written in Micah 3:11, the heads judge for reward, the priests teach for hire, and the prophets divine for money. In Revelation 18:13, the merchants of the earth have waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies, and the cargo list of Babylon runs through gold, silk, and cinnamon before ending with the most chilling merchandise in Scripture, slaves, and souls of men. When the sacred becomes merchandise, the final commodity is always people.

The false confidence matches too. In Micah 3:11, Micah’s leaders lean upon the LORD and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us. Babylon says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Revelation 18:7. It is the same speech from a different throne, mistaking God’s patience for God’s approval.

And the judgments answer one another. Micah’s false prophets receive darkness and silence, the sun shall go down over the prophets, and there is no answer of God Micah 3:6-7. Babylon’s judgment comes in one day, death, and mourning, and famine, Revelation 18:8, and her music and light are removed, the voice of harpers heard no more at all, the light of a candle shining no more at all Revelation 18:22-23. Zion is plowed as a field Micah 3:12. Babylon is thrown down like a millstone and found no more at all Revelation 18:21.

Here is what grieves me. The trajectory of these two chapters means that Zion can become Babylon. The covenant city, corrupted long enough and unrepentant long enough, inherits the harlot city’s judgment. But here is where the mercy lives. Micah 3:12 was a warning that worked. King Hezekiah heard it, humbled himself, and Jerusalem was spared for a generation Jeremiah 26:18-19. Revelation 18 is a verdict that is final. Between the warning and the verdict is the window of repentance, and we are living in that window. Even in Revelation 18, one mercy still sounds, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins Revelation 18:4.

And in the middle of Micah’s corrupted system stood one man who could not be bought, truly full of power by the spirit of the LORD, to declare unto Jacob his transgression Micah 3:8. That is the calling of every believer in every Babylon, in every age, including ours. Walk in truth. Refuse the price tag. Come out of her. And pray with me for every soul still listed on Babylon’s manifest, because the God who heard the cries then hears them now.

May we hear what the Spirit is saying through both testaments.

Do you see how these two chapters, one in the Old Testament and one in the New, both give us the warning that we can become Babylon, including the Church, if we are not careful to stay on the path leading to God through Jesus Christ?

**A note on the word final in the visual. Revelation 18's verdict is final for Babylon as a system, but not for the individual. In Revelation 18:4, in the hour of judgment a voice still calls, Come out of her, my people. The finality doesn’t reflect God’s unwillingness to show mercy. Instead, Babylon exhausted every opportunity God offered and refused all of them. Therefore, the system falls. The person can still come out and follow His way. Make sense?

Prayer Warrior for Life.

In verses 1 through 4 Micah addresses the rulers. And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment? Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron. The question that opens the indictment is devastating in its simplicity. Is it not for you to know judgment? These are the men whose entire office exists to know and do justice, and they hate the good and love the evil. Micah then describes their governance with the most violent imagery in the book, leaders as cannibals, skinning, butchering, and boiling the very people they were appointed to protect. It is deliberately unbearable language, because exploitation dressed in official robes deserves to be seen for what it is. Then comes the consequence. Then shall they cry unto the LORD, but he will not hear them: he will even hide his face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings. The leaders who would not hear the cries of the poor will one day cry out themselves, and heaven will be silent. They are judged by the standard they used.

In verses 5 through 7 Micah turns to the prophets. Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people err, that bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him. The picture is of prophets whose message is determined by their meals. Feed them, and they cry peace over your life. Fail to feed them, and they declare war against you. The word of God has become a commodity, priced and sold. Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them. Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yea, they shall all cover their lips; for there is no answer of God. The judgment fits the sin perfectly. Those who sold light will sit in darkness. The seers will see nothing. The diviners will hear nothing. They will cover their lips, the gesture of the leper and the mourner, because there is no answer of God. This is the same judgment Amos prophesied, a famine of hearing the words of the LORD, and it falls first on the professionals who trafficked in those words.

In verse 8 comes the hinge of the chapter, and one of the great verses of the prophetic books. But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin. Against the hired prophets stands one man who cannot be bought. Micah names the source of his boldness, and it is not personality, education, or position. It is the Spirit of the LORD. Power, judgment, and might, given for a purpose, to declare transgression and sin to the very people least willing to hear it. This verse is the portrait of every true messenger in every generation, filled by the Spirit rather than paid by the audience, and it stands in the middle of the chapter like a lamp in the darkness the false prophets created.

In verses 9 through 11 the indictment gathers all three offices together. Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor judgment, and pervert all equity. They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us. Every office has its price tag. Judges judge for reward. Priests teach for hire. Prophets divine for money. And the deepest corruption is the last line, they do all of this while leaning upon the LORD, presuming His presence as their protection. Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us. They treat the presence of God like a lucky charm, immunity purchased by geography, because the temple stands in their city. It is religion as insurance, and it is the final stage of spiritual decay, sinning boldly under the banner of God’s name.

In verse 12 the sentence falls, and it is the verse for which Micah was remembered a century later. Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest. Zion plowed like farmland. Jerusalem a heap of rubble. The temple mount overgrown like a forest shrine. For your sake, Micah says to the leaders, this is the harvest of leadership that builds with blood. A hundred years later, when Jeremiah preached his temple sermon and was threatened with death for it, the elders of the land quoted this very verse in his defense, remembering that Micah spoke it in the days of Hezekiah, and that Hezekiah did not kill the prophet but feared the LORD and besought Him, and the LORD relented. That means Micah 3:12 is one of the most powerful warnings in Scripture precisely because it worked. A king heard it, humbled himself, and a city was spared for a generation. The hard word, received with repentance, became mercy, exactly as it had in Nineveh.

In verses 1 and 2 the indictment is drawn with terrible precision. Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. And they covet fields, and take them by violence; and houses, and take them away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage. Notice the anatomy of this sin. It begins on the bed, in the night, in the imagination. It is deliberate, planned, premeditated. By morning light it becomes practice, and the enabling clause is chilling, because it is in the power of their hand. They do it because they can. The sin itself is land seizure, coveting fields and houses and taking them, and in Israel this was no ordinary theft. The land was Israel’s inheritance from God, divided by tribe and family, protected by law so that no family could be permanently dispossessed. To seize a man’s field was to steal his heritage, his children’s future, and his place among God’s people. The tenth commandment, thou shalt not covet, is being broken at scale, and the eighth follows it out the door.

In verses 3 through 5 God answers the schemers in their own currency. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go haughtily: for this time is evil. They devised iniquity; God devises judgment. The wordplay is deliberate and just. Those who plotted on their beds will find a yoke on their necks they cannot remove. In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say, We be utterly spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed it from me! turning away he hath divided our fields. The land grabbers will watch their own stolen portions divided by conquerors, and there will be none to cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the LORD, no one left to receive an allotment when the land is divided again.

In verses 6 and 7 the people try to silence the messenger. Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame. The oppressors’ response to the word of God is not repentance but censorship. Stop prophesying. Spare us the shame. And God answers with questions that expose the absurdity: O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the LORD straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly? Is the Spirit of the LORD shortened, limited, reduced to only comfortable words? The problem is not that God’s word has become harsh. The problem is that the people’s walk has become crooked, for His words do good to him that walketh uprightly.

In verses 8 and 9 the evidence is presented. Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy: ye pull off the robe with the garment from them that pass by securely as men averse from war. The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever. God’s own people have become an enemy, to Him and to each other. Peaceful passersby are stripped of their robes like spoils of war. Widows are evicted from their homes, and their children are robbed of God’s glory, their inheritance, their place in the covenant. When Micah names the victims, they are the very ones Zechariah says God defends: the widow, the fatherless, the stranger, the poor.

In verses 10 and 11 comes the sentence and the satire. Arise ye, and depart; for this is not your rest: because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction. The land seized by pollution cannot be a resting place; the very ground is defiled and will spit out its defilers. Then the satire: If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying, I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people. A people who silence true prophets do not end up with no prophets. They end up with false ones, preachers of wine and strong drink, prosperity without repentance. Every generation gets the prophets it is willing to hear.

And then, in verses 12 and 13, with no warning, mercy breaks through. I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah, as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men. The God who scattered will gather. The remnant, the survivors of judgment, will be assembled like a great flock, so many they make a noise of multitude. And the chapter closes with one of the most striking messianic images in the prophets: The breaker is come up before them: they have broken up, and have passed through the gate, and are gone out by it: and their king shall pass before them, and the LORD on the head of them. The Breaker goes before the flock, breaking open the way, shattering the gate of their captivity, and the sheep pour through the opening behind Him, their King leading, the LORD at their head. Where chapter two began with men breaking into houses to steal heritage, it ends with God breaking open a prison to restore His people. Christians through the centuries have seen in the Breaker a portrait of Christ, who broke the gates of death itself and led captivity captive, the Shepherd King who goes before His flock and whose sheep follow Him out into freedom.

The sin of Micah 2 begins in the night, on the bed, in the imagination, and is practiced by morning because it is in the power of their hand. Zechariah warns, let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. What occupies your imagination in the night hours? Where might power in your hand, at work, at home, in any relationship, be tempting you toward what you could do rather than what you should do? Prayer Warrior for Life.

In verses 2 through 4 the whole earth is summoned to witness the LORD’s descent. Hear, all ye people; hearken, O earth, and all that therein is: and let the Lord GOD be witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple. For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth. And the mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as the waters that are poured down a steep place. This is one of the most awesome pictures of God in all the prophets. The LORD leaves His place. He comes down. And creation cannot bear His footsteps, mountains melting like wax, valleys splitting open like water poured down a cliff. The high places He treads upon carry a double meaning, the literal hills, and the hilltop shrines where Israel worshipped idols. The very places where the people sinned become the places where God’s feet fall.

In verses 5 through 7 the cause is named and the sentence is passed. For the transgression of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the transgression of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they not Jerusalem? The rhetorical questions are surgical. Where does the northern kingdom’s sin live? In its own capital, Samaria. Where do Judah’s high places flourish? In Jerusalem itself. The centers of power are the centers of corruption. Therefore I will make Samaria as an heap of the field, and as plantings of a vineyard: and I will pour down the stones thereof into the valley, and I will discover the foundations thereof. And all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay desolate: for she gathered it of the hire of an harlot, and they shall return to the hire of an harlot. Samaria will be torn down to her foundations, her stones poured into the valley, the proud city returned to a bare hillside fit for planting vines. Her idols, purchased with the wages of spiritual harlotry, will go back the way they came, plunder to another idolatrous nation. What is built by unfaithfulness is carried away by unfaithfulness.

In verses 8 and 9 the prophet himself breaks. Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked: I will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls. For her wound is incurable; for it is come unto Judah; he is come unto the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem. Micah does not deliver this word coldly. He wails. He strips himself like a captive and howls like the creatures of the wilderness. And his grief has a reason that should sober every reader: the wound is incurable, and it is spreading. What began in Samaria has traveled south, through Judah, all the way to the gate of Jerusalem. Sin never stays where it starts. The northern kingdom’s corruption became the southern kingdom’s temptation, and the prophet can already see the infection at the capital’s gate.

In verses 10 through 15 Micah preaches through a series of town names, each one turned into a lament by wordplay in the Hebrew. Declare ye it not at Gath, weep ye not at all: in the house of Aphrah roll thyself in the dust. Town by town, the judgment rolls through the low country of Judah, Micah’s own home region. Saphir, whose name means beautiful, will go into shameful captivity. Zaanan, whose name suggests going out, will not come forth. Lachish, addressed as the beginning of the sin to the daughter of Zion, must bind the chariot to the swift beast, for it was through Lachish, the great fortress city, that the idolatry of Israel found its road into Judah. Moresheth-gath, Micah’s own hometown, will be given away like a bride with a parting gift. The houses of Achzib, whose name means a lie, shall be a lie to the kings of Israel. Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Mareshah: he shall come unto Adullam the glory of Israel. An heir here means a possessor, a conqueror. The glory of Israel will retreat to the cave of Adullam, where David once hid as a fugitive. The nation is going back to its hiding places.

The chapter closes in verse 16 with a call to mourning. Make thee bald, and poll thee for thy delicate children; enlarge thy baldness as the eagle; for they are gone into captivity from thee. Shave your head in grief, the prophet says, make yourself bald as the eagle, because the children, the delicate children, are going into captivity. The chapter that began with the LORD treading the high places ends with mothers mourning their children, because that is what idolatry costs in the end. The high places always send the next generation into captivity.What do you think about Micah 1? The chapter opens with the LORD coming out of His place and coming down, mountains melting beneath His feet, to judge the idolatry of His own people. What does this picture of God teach you that gentler pictures might not?

What do you think about Micah chapter 1? Micah asks, what is the transgression of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they not Jerusalem? The capitals, the centers of influence, were the centers of corruption, and Samaria’s wound traveled all the way to Jerusalem’s gate. What high places have been built in your own life, and who else might your compromises be traveling toward?

The psalmist declares that a day in God’s courts is better than a thousand elsewhere, and that he would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Samaria chose the tents. Micah wept through the valley. Psalm 84 says those whose strength is in the LORD pass through the valley of Baca, the valley of weeping, and make it a well. What would it look like this week for you to choose the doorkeeper’s place, and for your own valley of weeping to become a well for someone walking behind you?

We have just finished walking through the Book of Jonah. Four chapters. Four days of prayer. And unlike any other prophetic book we have read together, this one is not a collection of sermons. It is a story, and the prophet is not the hero of it. God is. Jonah is the only prophet in Scripture who hears the word of the LORD and runs, and his story holds up a mirror to every one of us who has ever heard God’s call and headed the other way.

Jonah’s Running Away

Jonah 1 opens with a clear call. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it. Nineveh was the capital of Assyria, Israel’s terror and tormentor, and God was sending His prophet to warn it. Instead, Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish, as far in the opposite direction as a ship could carry him. And notice the direction of every step. He goes down to Joppa, down into the ship, down into the sides of the ship to sleep. Running from God is always a descent.

But the LORD sent out a great wind, because the storm was not random weather. It was pursuit. And the picture on that ship should stop us cold. Pagan sailors are praying desperately while the prophet of the living God sleeps in the bottom of the boat. Jonah confesses that he fears the LORD who made the sea and the dry land, while fleeing that very God by sea, and the sailors see the contradiction immediately. When Jonah is finally cast into the waves, the sea grows calm, and an entire crew of pagan sailors comes to fear the LORD, offering sacrifice and making vows. Even our failures cannot stop God from drawing people to Himself. And disobedience is never private. It always touches the people around us.

Then comes the verse the whole world knows. The LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. Hear this clearly, the fish is not punishment. The fish is provision. Jonah is sinking to the bottom of the sea, and God prepares a rescue.

The Praying Running Prophet

Jonah 2 is a single prayer, prayed from the most unlikely sanctuary in Scripture, the belly of the fish. Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God. His God, still, because the relationship was never severed even when the obedience failed. And the prayer does not wait for dry land. It rises from the deepest and darkest place, which teaches us that prayer is not reserved for the recovered. Prayer belongs to the drowning.

The turning point of the whole prayer sits in one small word. I am cast out of thy sight, yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. Faith is that yet. Faith looks toward the temple from the bottom of the sea. And when Jonah’s soul fainted within him, he remembered the LORD, and his prayer traveled from the foundations of the mountains into the holy temple. No distance slowed it. The prayer of a drowning man reaches the throne as surely as the prayer of a priest at the altar.

Then Jonah does something remarkable. Still inside the fish, before any deliverance has come, he offers the voice of thanksgiving and declares the heartbeat of the entire Bible: Salvation is of the LORD. And immediately after the surrender comes the deliverance. The LORD spake unto the fish, and Jonah is returned to dry land, to a second chance, to a call still waiting for him.

The Preaching that Inspires Revival

Jonah 3 opens with five of the most merciful words in Scripture. And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time. God does not replace His runaway prophet. He recommissions him, with the identical assignment. Our God is the God of the second call, and failure delays a calling but does not cancel it.

This time Jonah arises and goes, and he preaches what may be the shortest sermon ever recorded, eight words in our English Bible. Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. No eloquence, no signs and wonders. Just the word of the LORD, finally delivered by a finally obedient messenger. And the impossible happens. The whole city believes God, from the greatest to the least. The king of the most feared empire on earth comes down from his throne, trades his royal robe for sackcloth, and commands the whole city to turn every one from his evil way. And God saw their works, that they turned, and He relented. Not their sackcloth. Their turning. More than a hundred and twenty thousand souls were spared because one reluctant prophet finally walked one day into a city and spoke one short sentence. The power was never in the preacher. The power is in the word of God and in the mercy of the God who sends it. If Nineveh can turn in a day, no city, no nation, and no person is beyond hope.

The Question to Consider

Jonah 4 reveals what the book was about all along. The revival is over, the city is spared, and the prophet is angry. Here at last is why Jonah ran, in his own words. I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness. He ran not from fear but from theology. He knew that if Nineveh repented, God would relent, and Jonah wanted his enemies judged, not forgiven.

God answers the rage with gentleness. A question, doest thou well to be angry? Then a gourd, prepared to shade Jonah’s head, then a worm, then an east wind, each one prepared just as the fish was prepared, because nothing in this book is accident. Jonah grieves the withered plant more than the souls of a city, and God asks the question that ends the book. Thou hast had pity on the gourd. Should not I spare Nineveh, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand?

And there the book ends, with no answer from Jonah recorded. The silence is deliberate. The question is not just for Jonah. It is for every reader in every generation who has ever wanted mercy for themselves and judgment for their enemies. The book hands us the question and waits.

Where We Stand as Prayer Warriors

As Prayer Warriors for Life, we finish Jonah differently than we finished Hosea, Joel, and Amos. In Hosea we watched God love the unfaithful. In Joel we heard the call to return. In Amos we heard justice roll like waters. In Jonah, the mercy we have been reading about turns and looks at us, and asks whether our hearts are wide enough to want it for others.

So let the story search us. Where are we running, and what Tarshish are we sailing toward? What deep place is God inviting us to pray from, before the rescue and not after? What second call is waiting for our obedience? And who is our Nineveh, the person or people whose forgiveness would secretly displease us? Jesus called Himself greater than Jonas, and He proved it exactly here. Where Jonah sat east of the city hoping to watch it burn, Jesus stood over Jerusalem and wept. The Book of Jonah ends with a question so that our lives can be the answer. May we answer it with hearts stretched to the width of God’s mercy.

This is the message of Jonah. May we hear it. May we respond to it. May we never run from the call, and may we rejoice every time mercy triumphs over judgment.

In verses 1 through 3 the prophet’s secret finally comes out. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. Here at last is the reason Jonah ran, in his own words. Not fear of Nineveh. Knowledge of God. Jonah quotes the ancient confession of Exodus 34, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness, and he hurls it at God as an accusation. He ran because he knew that if Nineveh repented, God would relent, and Jonah wanted Nineveh judged. Assyria was Israel’s terror and tormentor. Jonah would rather die than watch his enemies receive the same mercy that had just pulled him out of the sea. It is one of the most honest and disturbing prayers in Scripture, a man of God angry at God for being good.

In verse 4 God answers the rage with a question. Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry? No thunder. No rebuke. A question, gentle and surgical, inviting the prophet to examine his own heart. God does with Jonah what He did with Cain, what He did with Elijah under the juniper tree, what Jesus would do again and again, He asks the question that makes a man look inward.

In verses 5 through 8 God teaches with a gourd, a worm, and a wind. So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. Jonah does not answer God’s question. Instead he camps outside Nineveh, still hoping to watch it burn. And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd. Notice the word prepared. The same God who prepared a great fish now prepares a gourd, then a worm, then a vehement east wind. Everything in this book is prepared. Nothing is accident. The gourd rises overnight and Jonah is exceeding glad, the only gladness recorded of him in the entire book, and it is gladness over his own comfort. Then God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. The gourd dies, the sun beats down, and Jonah again asks to die, this time over a plant.

In verses 9 through 11 comes the lesson and the question that ends the book. And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle? The argument is devastating in its tenderness. Jonah pitied a plant he did not make, that lived one night. Should God not pity a city of over a hundred and twenty thousand souls so spiritually lost they cannot tell their right hand from their left, souls He did make, and even the animals among them? The book ends there, on God’s question, with no answer from Jonah recorded. The silence is deliberate. The question is not really for Jonah. It is for every reader in every generation who has ever wanted mercy for themselves and judgment for their enemies. The book hands us the question and waits.

And this is where Jonah stands apart from every other prophetic book. In Hosea we watched God love the unfaithful. In Joel we heard the call to return. In Amos we heard justice roll like waters. In Jonah, the mercy we have been reading about turns and asks whether we ourselves have hearts wide enough to want it for others. Jesus called Himself greater than Jonas, and He proved it in this exact way: where Jonah sat east of the city hoping to see it destroyed, Jesus stood over Jerusalem and wept because it would not repent. The book of Jonah ends with a question so that our lives can be the answer.

Jonah was exceeding glad over a gourd and angry unto death when it withered, yet unmoved by the fate of a hundred and twenty thousand souls. The psalmist prays, unite my heart to fear thy name. What are the gourds in your life, the comforts whose loss undoes you while eternal things leave you unmoved? Where is your heart divided, and what would a united heart look like? In verses 1 through 2 the call is renewed. And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. These verses deserve to be read slowly. The word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time. God does not replace Jonah, lecture Jonah, or reduce Jonah’s assignment as a penalty for his running. The identical commission is given again, arise, go, preach. The God of the Bible is the God of the second call. Jonah’s failure delayed his obedience, but it did not cancel his calling, because the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

In verses 3 through 4 the prophet finally obeys. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. The same words that described his flight in chapter one, arise and go, now describe his obedience. Jonah walks a day’s journey into an enormous, violent, pagan city and preaches what may be the shortest sermon in Scripture, eight words in our English Bible. Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. There is no recorded eloquence, no signs and wonders, no lengthy appeal. Just the word of the LORD, finally delivered by a finally obedient messenger. And notice the mercy hidden inside the warning itself. God did not have to give forty days. A judgment announced in advance is an invitation to repent, for why warn a city You intend simply to destroy?

In verses 5 through 9 the impossible happens. So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. The revival moves from the streets to the throne. The king of the most feared empire on earth comes down from his throne, exchanges his royal robe for sackcloth, and sits in ashes. Then he issues a decree that the whole city, man and beast, fast and cry mightily unto God. And hear the theology in this pagan king’s proclamation. Let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? The king understands what many in Israel did not, that repentance is not ritual alone but turning, every one from his evil way, and that mercy cannot be presumed upon but must be sought. Who can tell. The same humble hope the sailors had in chapter one, and the same hope Joel preached, who knoweth if he will return and repent.

In verse 10 comes the verse that reveals the heart of God. And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not. God saw their works. Not their sackcloth, their works, that they turned. The fasting and the ashes were the outward signs, but what God responded to was the turning, the actual departure from evil ways and from violence. And when they turned, God relented. The judgment pronounced was withdrawn. The city that was forty days from overthrow was spared, well over a hundred and twenty thousand souls. This is the same God Joel described, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Jesus Himself would later point to this moment, saying the men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonas, and behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

The chapter’s arithmetic is worth pondering. One reluctant prophet, one eight word sermon, one day’s walk into the city, and the greatest revival in recorded history. The power was never in the preacher, whose heart, as chapter four will reveal, was not even in the work. The power is in the word of God and in the mercy of the God who sends it. If Nineveh can turn in a day, no city, no nation, and no person is beyond hope.

In verse 1 the direction of Jonah’s life changes. Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish’s belly. After a full chapter of fleeing, descending, and sleeping, Jonah finally prays. Notice that the text calls the LORD his God. The relationship was never severed. Jonah ran from his assignment, but God never stopped being his God. And notice where the prayer happens. Not in the temple. Not on dry land after the rescue is complete. The prayer rises from inside the fish, from the deepest and darkest place, which teaches us that prayer is not reserved for the recovered. Prayer belongs to the drowning.

In verses 2 through 4 Jonah describes his cry and God’s hearing. I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas and the floods compassed me about all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. Jonah is honest about how far down he went. He calls it the belly of hell. And he is honest about who cast him there, saying thou hadst cast me into the deep, recognizing God’s hand even in the discipline. Yet the turning point of the whole prayer sits in the small word yet. I am cast out of thy sight, yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. Faith is that yet. Faith looks toward the temple from the bottom of the sea.

In verses 5 through 7 the descent reaches its lowest point and the rescue begins. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains the earth with her bars was about me for ever yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. The imagery is of a man sinking to the very foundations of the earth, the bars of the deep closing behind him like a prison forever. And then comes another yet. Yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption. At the moment his soul fainted, Jonah remembered the LORD, and his prayer traveled from the bottom of the sea into the holy temple. No distance slowed it. The prayer of a drowning man reaches the throne as surely as the prayer of a priest at the altar.

In verses 8 through 9 Jonah draws the lesson and makes his surrender. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. Lying vanities are the idols, the empty things people cling to that cannot save. Jonah declares that those who hold on to them are forsaking the very mercy available to them. Then he does something remarkable. Still inside the fish, before any deliverance has come, he offers the voice of thanksgiving and renews his vows. He does not bargain. He does not say deliver me first and then I will give thanks. He gives thanks from inside the circumstance. And he closes with the declaration that is the heartbeat of the entire Bible. Salvation is of the LORD. Salvation does not come from Jonah’s effort, the sailors’ rowing, or any human striving. It comes from God alone.

In verse 10 comes the deliverance, and it comes immediately after the surrender. And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. The same God who commands the sea and prepares the fish now speaks, and the fish obeys. Jonah is returned to dry land, to a second chance, to a call that is still waiting for him. The chapter that began in the belly of hell ends on the dry land of new beginnings, and the lesson stands for every generation. When we stop running, when we pray from the deep, when we release our lying vanities and declare that salvation is of the LORD, God is faithful to bring us up and set our feet on solid ground again.
