Theme: Paul demonstrates that all people—Jew and Gentile alike—are guilty of sin and therefore need the salvation God provides through Jesus Christ.

Introduction

In Romans 1–2, Paul has shown the spiritual condition of both Gentiles and Jews. Now he brings the argument to its conclusion: everyone is accountable to God.

Romans 3:9 does not teach that people are born guilty of Adam’s sin or are incapable of responding to God. Paul’s point is that all have sinned and therefore stand guilty because of their own sin (cf. Romans 3:23).

I. The Universal Problem — Sin

Romans 3:9–12

“For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.” — Romans 3:9, NKJV

A. No group has an advantage

• Jew and Gentile alike have sinned.

• Religious heritage cannot remove personal guilt.

• Romans 2:11 — “For there is no partiality with God.”

B. Sin is universal

• Paul strings together Old Testament passages to establish his case.

• “There is none righteous, no, not one” (v. 10).

• This describes humanity under sin, those who can discern good from evil (not infants).

C. Everyone eventually chooses sin

• “They have all turned aside” (v. 12).

• Notice the language of choice and action: they “turned aside.”

• Isaiah 53:6 — “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way.”

• Our greatest problem is not political, financial, or social. Our greatest problem is sin.

II. The Evidence of Sin — Our Conduct

A. Sin appears in man’s words — vv. 13–14

• “Their throat is an open tomb.”

• “With their tongues they have practiced deceit.”

• “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”

• James 3:9–10 reminds us that our words reveal the condition of our hearts.

B. Sin appears in man’s actions — vv. 15–17

• “Their feet are swift to shed blood.”

• Destruction and misery follow sinful choices.

• “The way of peace they have not known.”

C. Sin appears in man’s attitude toward God — v. 18

“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

• When reverence for God disappears, restraints against sin soon disappear as well.

• Proverbs 16:6 — “And by the fear of the LORD one departs from evil.”

• Sin affects what we say, do, and value.

III. The Purpose of the Law — To Expose Sin

A. The law silences our excuses

“That every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” — v. 19

• Before God, no one can successfully argue his own innocence.

B. Law identifies sin

“For by the law is the knowledge of sin.” — v. 20

• Law defines the boundary.

• When we violate God’s law, we become sinners.

• 1 John 3:4 — “Sin is lawlessness.”

C. The Law of Moses cannot erase the sins already committed

Paul says:

“By the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight.”

Keeping the law perfectly cannot undo yesterday’s sins. Once the law has been broken, we need something more than law—we need forgiveness.

Conclusion — The Law Points Us to Christ

• Romans 3:9–20 leaves humanity standing before God with every mouth stopped.

• We have all sinned.

• Our conduct demonstrates our sin.

• God’s law exposes our guilt.

• We cannot erase our guilt through our own works.

• Therefore, we desperately need the salvation God provides in Christ.

There are a lot of mistaken ideas about marriage these days. Sometimes people consider marriage a “ball and chain.” Other times they treat it as an advanced form of dating, expecting to exit the relationship if things get difficult. Marriage is the first institution that God created among humans, and as such it would important to honor it as such. So what does marriage mean?

Marriage means…

Companionship (Gen. 2:18)

Adam was alone! God said this was not good. He demonstrated Adam’s deep need for companionship by letting him see and name all the animals. In this process, Adam recognized there was no other among creation like him. Man would leave his father and mother and create a new home with his wife (2:24). His need for companionship was clear (Ecc. 4:9-12).

Completeness (Gen. 2:20-24)

Not only was Adam alone, but he was also incomplete. Part of him was missing, and God demonstrated this in a lasting way by removing Adam’s rib and creating Eve from that portion of the man. Adam would always know Eve was part of him. This completeness is demonstrated in the New Testament teachings of relationships between husbands and wives (Eph. 5:22-30).

Covenant (Gen. 2:24)

Adam and Eve were joined in a covenant by God. Jesus confirms this in Matthew 19:4-6. God was also part of this covenant! That means when the covenant is broken for unscriptural reasons, man and woman sin against God as well as one another.
