Retail Investors

Retail investors are everyday individuals like you and me.

We invest our personal money through licensed stockbrokers or investment platforms.

Some investors start with as little as ₦10,000, while others build portfolios worth millions of naira.

Although each retail investor may trade relatively small amounts, together they represent a powerful force.

When thousands of retail investors rush into the same stock, they can significantly influence its price.

2. Institutional Investors

Institutional investors are the heavyweights of the market.

These include:

Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs)

Insurance companies

Mutual funds

Asset management firms

Investment funds

Unlike retail investors, institutions manage billions of naira on behalf of other people.

When you notice unusually large trades or significant movements in blue-chip stocks, institutional investors are often behind them.

Their investment decisions can influence the direction of the entire market.

3. Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs)

Foreign Portfolio Investors are international investors who allocate part of their capital to the Nigerian market.

These could be:

Global investment funds

Foreign asset managers

International hedge funds

Sovereign wealth funds

Because they invest in foreign currency, their activities can affect not only stock prices but also foreign exchange inflows into Nigeria.

When foreign investors become optimistic about Nigeria, the market often benefits from increased liquidity.

When they pull money out, markets can experience significant selling pressure.

4. Market Makers

One of the least understood participants in the market is the market maker.

Market makers are licensed firms appointed to provide liquidity.

Their role is simple but essential.

They continuously quote prices at which they are willing to buy and sell certain securities.

This helps ensure investors can trade more easily instead of waiting for another investor to appear on the opposite side of every transaction.

Without market makers, trading could become slower and less efficient.

5. Stockbrokers

Stockbrokers are your gateway to the market.

They don’t usually invest your money for you.

Instead, they execute your buy and sell orders on the Nigerian Exchange.

Whether you’re using an investment app or working directly with a brokerage firm, every transaction passes through a licensed stockbroker.

Without them, retail investors cannot access the market.

6. The Companies Themselves

Sometimes, the company whose shares are listed also participates in the market.

One common example is a share buyback.

A company may decide to repurchase some of its own shares from existing shareholders.

This often reduces the number of shares available in the market and may increase earnings per share over time.

Companies also disclose when directors and key executives buy or sell shares, allowing investors to monitor insider activity.

These disclosures can provide useful insight into management’s confidence in the business.

Why does this matter?

Understanding who participates in the market helps explain why prices move.

A sudden price increase could be driven by:

Institutional buying

Positive company results

Increased retail interest

Foreign investor inflows

Likewise, a sharp decline may have little to do with the company’s quality and more to do with large investors reducing their positions.

The market isn’t random.

It’s the result of thousands of decisions made by different participants with different objectives.

Final thoughts

One of the biggest advantages you can have as an investor is understanding how the market actually works.

You’re never trading in isolation.

Every order has another participant on the opposite side.

The more you understand who they are and why they invest, the better equipped you’ll be to make informed decisions.

About The Naija Investor

If you want to understand the Nigerian stock market beyond the headlines, The Naija Investor explains how the market works, how to analyze companies, build a portfolio, understand dividends, and invest with confidence.

Whether you’re just starting or looking to improve your investing skills, it’s a practical guide designed for Nigerian investors.

Disclaimer

This article is for educational purposes only and should not be considered financial advice. useful insights into where money is flowing and how interest rates are shaping investment decisions.

Here’s a breakdown of the major developments.

Treasury Bills remain in high demand

On July 8, the Central Bank of Nigeria conducted its latest Treasury Bills auction.

The offer was:

₦100 billion (91-day)

₦100 billion (182-day)

₦500 billion (364-day)

A total of ₦700 billion was offered.

Investors, however, submitted bids worth ₦1.86 trillion, showing demand remained far above supply.

Although subscriptions declined slightly from the previous auction, demand was still more than twice the amount on offer.

Interest rates continue to rise

The most important takeaway from the auction wasn’t demand.

It was the increase in stop rates.

Successful investors earned:

16.28% on the 91-day bill

16.50% on the 182-day bill

17.34% on the 364-day bill

Higher Treasury Bill yields generally make fixed-income investments more attractive, especially for investors seeking relatively stable returns.

FGN Savings Bond is still open

If you’re a retail investor looking for a government-backed investment, the July FGN Savings Bond remains through Commercial Papers

Several Nigerian companies also accessed the debt market this week.

Highlights include:

Homeport Non-Interest Funding SPV seeking up to ₦20 billion, offering yields between 21.50% and 23.50%.

Cardinal Torch Company announced a ₦10 billion Commercial Paper Programme.

Jilnas Nigeria completed a ₦4 billion issuance at a yield of 25.0001%, the highest recorded this week.

TrustBanc Holdings successfully raised ₦20 billion across two series with yields ranging from 21.00% to 23.50%.

These high yields reflect the current high-interest-rate environment and the increased cost of borrowing for businesses.

Insurance companies continue raising capital

Nigeria’s insurance industry recapitalisation exercise remains active.

Recent developments include:

Regency Alliance Insurance successfully completed a ₦3.04 billion Rights Issue.

Fortis Global Insurance is preparing a ₦23.54 billion recapitalisation programme, subject to regulatory approval.

Veritas Kapital Insurance is currently raising ₦15 billion through a private placement.

Coronation Insurance continues work on its ₦9.26 billion private placement.

The recapitalisation programme is expected to strengthen the financial position of insurance companies and improve the industry’s long-term capacity.

What does all this mean for investors?

Several themes are becoming clear.

First, investors continue to show strong demand for government securities despite rising yields.

Second, companies are still willing to borrow, even at relatively high interest rates, suggesting continued funding needs across the economy.

Finally, insurance companies are strengthening their capital base ahead of regulatory requirements, a development that could reshape the sector over the coming years.

What to watch next

Investors should keep an eye on four major developments:

How Treasury Bill yields evolve in future auctions.

Continued activity in the Commercial Paper market.

Progress on insurance recapitalisation.

The outcome of the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for July 21, which could provide the next signal on the direction of interest rates.

These events will likely influence investment decisions across fixed income, equities, and corporate financing in the weeks ahead.

Final thoughts

One of the biggest mistakes investors make is focusing on only one asset class.

A well-informed investor understands how Treasury Bills, bonds, commercial papers, equities, and monetary policy all work together.

The more you understand the broader financial market, the better your investment decisions become.

About The Naija Investor

If you’re looking to build a solid foundation length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

The Nigerian stock market extended its bullish momentum for a third consecutive trading session, as investors added ₦1.86 trillion in market value.

The NGX All-Share Index gained 1.24%, closing at 237,083.28 points, up from 234,178.23 points on Monday.

With this performance, the market’s year-to-date return improved to 52.35%, reinforcing one of the strongest rallies the Nigerian Exchange has seen in recent years.

But beyond the numbers, what drove today’s market?

Strong buying across the market

Market breadth remained positive.

A total of 55 stocks advanced, while only 17 declined, showing that buying interest was broad-based rather than concentrated in just a few large-cap companies.

Leading today’s gainers were:

Cadbury Nigeria (+10.00%)

Zichis Agro Allied (+10.00%)

NAHCO (+9.99%)

Vitafoam (+8.17%)

The Initiates Plc (+8.10%)

Transcorp (+6.13%)

NGX Group (+5.59%)

Dangote Cement (+5.40%)

Lafarge Africa (WAPCO) (+4.83%)

FCMB (+4.50%)

The continued strength across different sectors suggests that investor confidence remains high.

Zenith Bank remains the market’s most actively traded stock

Although overall trading volume declined by 8.39%, activity remained healthy.

Nearly 493.4 million shares exchanged hands, valued at ₦27.84 billion across almost 50,000 deals.

For the third consecutive trading session, Zenith Bank dominated the market.

The stock accounted for:

94.29 million shares traded

19.11% of total market volume

₦9.91 billion in transaction value

35.60% of the day’s total value traded

This level of institutional activity often signals continued investor interest in Nigeria’s banking sector.

Corporate developments investors should know

Several important corporate announcements also attracted attention.

UBA announced that Tony Elumelu will retire as Chairman of the Group, with Emmanuel Nnorom named as his successor.

Meanwhile, Emerald HoldCo launched a mandatory takeover offer for up to 11.74 million shares of Beta Glass at ₦590.94 per share.

Caverton Offshore Support Group also announced a delay in releasing its 2025 audited financial statements, citing ERP implementation challenges and the recent resignation of its Chief Financial Officer.

Investors will be watching closely when the company releases its results.

Oil prices provide additional support

Global oil prices moved higher during the session.

Brent Crude: $73.80 per barrel (+2.36%)

WTI Crude: $70.25 per barrel (+2.39%)

The increase followed reports of renewed security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of potential supply disruptions.

For Nigeria, stronger oil prices generally support government revenue, foreign exchange earnings, and overall market sentiment.

The naira weakens slightly

After recent appreciation, the naira recorded a modest pullback.

BDC Market: ₦1,405/$

NFEM: ₦1,375.75/$

While the movement was relatively small, investors will continue monitoring exchange rate developments because of their impact on imported inflation and corporate earnings.

A positive macroeconomic signal

One encouraging development came from Nigeria’s external sector.

The country’s current account surplus increased to $5.0 billion in Q1 2026, supported by a stronger trade balance.

A healthy current account position generally reflects stronger foreign exchange inflows and improved external stability.

What investors should watch next

Several developments could influence market direction over the coming days:

Will the NGX extend its winning streak to a fourth consecutive session?

Will rising oil prices continue if tensions around the Strait of Hormuz escalate?

How will investors react when Caverton releases its delayed financial statements?

Will institutional buying remain concentrated in banking stocks?

These factors could shape market sentiment for the rest of the week.

Final thoughts

The Nigerian market continues to demonstrate impressive resilience.

However, strong rallies often create excitement that encourages investors to chase rising prices.

Successful investing requires discipline.

Focus on quality companies, understand the fundamentals behind each investment, and avoid making decisions based solely on short-term market momentum.

Markets rise and fall, but disciplined investors remain focused on long-term wealth creation.

About The Naija Investor

If you want to learn how to analyze Nigerian stocks, understand company financial statements, identify quality businesses, and build a long-term investment strategy, The Naija Investor was written for you.

Whether you’re a It burst through the door.

On Monday, the NGX All-Share Index closed at 243,158.97 points, a new all-time high, up from 242,277.81 points in the prior session. That is a gain of 0.36% in a single day, and it caps what has already been a remarkable year for Nigerian equities. The year-to-date return now stands at 56.26%. To put that in context: if you had placed money in the Nigerian stock market on January 1st and done nothing since, your portfolio would be worth more than half again what you started with.

Thanks for reading ProfitableMan's Substack! This was a broad, confident rally touching industrial, consumer, and energy names across the board.

NASCON led all gainers with a stunning +17.78% jump in a single session. Behind it came CAP (+9.99%), Dangote Sugar (+9.97%), Maybaker (+9.81%), and Stanbic IBTC (+9.70%). Fourteen other stocks recorded positive sessions, including GTCO, UBA, Buacement, and Eterna.

Perhaps more telling than the gainers was the overall market breadth. 44 stocks advanced while only 34 declined. When a rally is built this wide, it is not a story of a few hot names pulling an index. It is a market that is broadly being bought.

Four stocks — CONHALLPLC, CAP, AIICO, and LIVINGTRUST — went one step further and closed above their 52-week highs. That is a signal of sustained, not speculative, momentum.

The Trading Numbers Tell a More Nuanced Story

N43.84 billion worth of shares changed hands on Monday across 122,041 deals, with a total of 967.47 million units traded.

Volume, however, was down 48.30% from the previous session. That is worth pausing on. A market that sets a new all-time high on significantly lower volume than the day before is not necessarily in trouble, but it does raise a question: is the conviction behind this rally as deep as the headline numbers suggest?

VFDGROUP dominated by volume, accounting for 26.39% of all shares traded with 255.35 million units. Zenith Bank led by value, with N8.42 billion in traded value representing 19.20% of the day’s total. Access Corp and Fidelity Bank rounded out the volume leaders, while Aradel Holdings joined Zenith and Access at the top of the value charts.

The FX Market: Two Rates, Two Stories

Nigeria’s currency market continues to operate on a dual-rate logic that is worth understanding.

The Bureau De Change (BDC) rate closed flat at N1,400 per US dollar on Monday. This is the rate most ordinary Nigerians encounter when they need to change money outside the banking system.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) window — the official interbank rate — saw the naira strengthen by 0.71%, moving from N1,374.94 to N1,365.25 per dollar. That is a meaningful one-day appreciation by any measure.

The gap between the two rates has narrowed over time, but it persists. Until it closes entirely, the FX market will continue to tell two different stories depending on which window you are looking through.

Crude Oil Surges on Geopolitical Shock

The biggest single-day story in global commodities on Monday was not gold or grains. It was oil, and the reason was geopolitical.

Brent crude surged 2.75% to US$111.15 per barrel. WTI crude rose 0.24% to US$102.18. The trigger was a direct escalation in the Middle East: the U.S. military confirmed that two Navy guided-missile destroyers had entered the Gulf and transited the Strait of Hormuz to break an Iranian blockade of the waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly 20% of global oil supply. When it is threatened, oil markets do not wait for confirmation — they price in the risk immediately. Monday’s move was the market doing exactly that.

For Nigeria, the world’s largest oil producer in Africa, higher crude prices carry a complicated mix of fiscal relief and domestic fuel cost pressure. Both sides of that equation will need watching.

Precious Metals Took a Hit

Gold and silver moved in the opposite direction from oil on Monday.

Gold fell 1.21% to US$4,569.65 per ounce. Silver dropped further, declining 1.86% to US$74.21.

Even after these declines, both metals remain at historically elevated price levels, reflecting the broader environment of global uncertainty that has characterised 2026. A single-day dip does not erase a multi-year trend, but it is a reminder that safe-haven assets are not immune to short-term profit-taking, particularly when risk-on sentiment in equities is running hot.

Food Commodities Flashed a Warning Sign

The AFEX commodity exchange registered price moves on Monday that deserve close attention, particularly for anyone thinking about food security and inflation.

Maize jumped 32.03% to N310.13 per unit. Sorghum rose 6.10% to N382.75. Soybeans climbed 3.04% to N736.00.

A 32% single-session spike in maize is extraordinary. Maize is a foundational input for poultry feed, processed food, and direct consumption. When it moves like this, the effects ripple across the food system and show up weeks later in market prices and household budgets. Whether this is a one-day anomaly or the beginning of a sustained move is the question traders and policymakers will be watching closely.

The Lagos Commodities and Futures Exchange (LCFE), by contrast, saw no movement. Eko Gold held at N140,000 per gram. Premium Eko Rice remained at N50,000 per 50kg, and Eko Rice Classic stayed at N55,000 per 50kg.

The Unlisted Market Also Had a Positive Day

Away from the main board, the NASD OTC Exchange — where unlisted securities trade — closed Monday in positive territory. The NASD Securities Index (NSI) gained 0.52% to close at 4,026.64 points, up from 4,005.78 on Thursday. A total of 751,518 units valued at N35.43 million exchanged hands across 31 deals, with two gainers and two decliners recorded.

What to Take Away from Monday

Monday gave us a market that is, on the surface, in excellent health. A new all-time high, broad gains, a strengthening naira in the official window, and surging oil revenue prospects for the government.

Below the surface, a few threads deserve watching: lower trading volume on a record-high day, a 32% spike in maize prices, and an oil market that has suddenly become hostage to military movements in the Gulf.

Markets reward those who read beyond the headline. Monday had a very good headline — but the footnotes are where the real story is beginning to develop.

Data sourced from Proshare Research, NGX, AFEX, LCFE, and NASD OTC Exchange. Strong revenue growth in a difficult market

Unilever reported:

Revenue: ₦59.17 billion (+26% YoY)

Net Profit (PAT): ₦7.02 billion (+26.4% YoY)

Earnings Per Share: ₦1.22 (vs ₦0.97 in 2025)

In an inflation-heavy environment, this tells us something important:

The company has pricing power — it can pass costs to consumers without losing demand.

2. Margin expansion shows operational strength

Profitability improved significantly:

Gross Profit: ₦26.61 billion (+41%)

Gross Margin: 45% (up from 40.1%)

Operating Profit: ₦11.48 billion (+39%)

This indicates:

Better cost control

Improved efficiency

Stronger positioning in core product lines

3. The Foods segment is now the core engine

Unilever has clearly repositioned its business.

The Foods division now dominates:

Foods: ₦37.69 billion (63.7% of total revenue, +37% YoY)

Personal Care: ₦15.84 billion (26.8%)

Beauty & Wellbeing: ₦5.64 billion (9.5%)

This shift follows the company’s exit from weaker segments in previous years.

The strategy is clear: focus on what sells consistently — food.

4. The ₦114 billion “cash fortress”

The most striking part of this report is not revenue.

It’s the balance sheet.

Cash Balance: ₦114.46 billion

Total Assets: ₦189.99 billion

Cash = ~60% of total assets

Even more interesting:

This cash alone can cover total liabilities (₦75.51 billion) more than 1.5 times.

Why this matters

Strong protection against currency shocks

Ability to fund expansion easily

Capacity to pay dividends

Generates income on its own

In fact:

Finance Income: ₦3.34 billion in just one quarter

👉 The company is literally earning billions just from holding cash.

5. Rising costs: a key watchpoint

Not everything is perfect.

Marketing & Admin Expenses: ₦13.58 billion (up from ₦9.09 billion)

A large portion went into brand and marketing (₦6.6 billion).

This suggests:

Unilever is aggressively defending and growing its market share.

Good for long-term positioning — but something investors should monitor.

6. Ownership structure

Unilever Overseas Holdings BV: 75.96% ownership

This means:

Strong backing from the parent company

Long-term commitment

But also:

Lower free float (~24%)

Less trading liquidity on the market

The investment perspective

🟢 Bull case

Strong pricing power

High margins

Massive cash reserves

Defensive consumer business

This is almost like a “cash-rich company that sells everyday essentials.”

🔴 Bear case

Rising operating costs

Heavy dependence on the Foods segment

Exposure to consumer spending pressure

Bottom line

Q1 2026 shows a company that is:

More focused

More efficient

Financially stronger

Unilever is built to survive tough conditions — and positioned to accelerate when the economy improves.

About The Naija Investor

If you want to understand how to analyze Nigerian companies like this — from financials to strategy and valuation — The Naija Investor breaks it down in a simple, practical way.

It is designed to help you move from guessing to confident investing.

Disclaimer

This content is for educational purposes only and should not be considered financial advice. What is happening in the Nigerian capital market right now is not a coincidence, not a bubble, and not a story being told only by people who are already invested. It is the convergence of several structural forces arriving at the same time. Understanding each one separately is useful. Understanding how they interact is what gives you an edge.

The FTSE Effect

In early April 2026, FTSE Russell upgraded Nigeria from Unclassified back to Frontier Market status, effective September 21, 2026. This is not a symbolic classification. It is a mandate.

Every fund in the world that tracks the FTSE Frontier Index is now required to include Nigerian stocks in its portfolio by September. These are not small funds. They are global pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and institutional asset managers managing hundreds of billions of dollars in aggregate.

They are not waiting for September. They are buying now, in anticipation of the mandatory rebalancing. That is why Aradel Holdings moved 9.75 billion naira in traded value in a single Friday session. That is why Access Holdings hit a 52-week high. That is why the banking index gained 3.64 percent on the last day of the week alone.

The foreign money is already arriving. The official rebalancing is five months away. That gap between now and September is the window that sophisticated domestic investors are using to position ahead of the larger institutional flows.

The Earnings Season

Nigerian companies are reporting strong results and the numbers are not marginal improvements. They are transformations.

Guinness Nigeria went from posting losses three years ago to declaring a 2 naira interim dividend this week after reporting a 10.4 billion naira net profit in Q1 2026. Profit before tax grew 53 percent year on year. The stock crossed 1 trillion naira in market capitalisation. The company behind Stout, Harp, and Orijin is structurally different from the business it was two years ago.

ETI reported 1.21 trillion naira in profit for 2025. Zenith Bank declared 8.75 naira per share in dividends. GTCO paid 12.76 naira per share, a 59 percent increase on the prior year. Wema Bank doubled its profit. Stanbic IBTC reported a pre-tax profit of 552 billion naira, up 81.6 percent year on year.

These are not numbers manufactured by optimism. They are audited financial results filed with the Nigerian Exchange.

The Oil and Infrastructure Story

Seplat Energy became the first stock in Nigerian Exchange history to trade above 10,000 naira per share this week. Bloomberg reported that the Dangote refinery, the largest single-train refinery in the world, is now supplying jet fuel to Europe while planning a pan-African IPO that could list across six African exchanges simultaneously.

Oil reached 121 dollars per barrel during the quarter before pulling back to 88 dollars after ceasefire signals from Iran. Even at 88 dollars Nigeria benefits from elevated crude revenues and energy company margins.

The AKK gas pipeline is now more than 90 percent complete and gas deliveries to Abuja are expected by July. Oando just secured a gas supply contract for Bayelsa’s 60 megawatt power plant. The energy infrastructure of Nigeria is being built in real time and the companies building it are listed.

The Macro Backdrop

President Tinubu signed the 2026 Appropriation Act into law today. Government capital spending is now legally authorised. Every naira of infrastructure spending flows through the earnings of listed companies in cement, construction, energy, and logistics.

The naira has stabilised. Inflation has fallen from 34.8 percent in December 2024 to 15.15 percent by December 2025. The Central Bank cut the monetary policy rate by 50 basis points. Foreign reserves have strengthened. The 7 billion dollar FX backlog that caused Nigeria’s FTSE downgrade in 2023 has been cleared.

These are the five conditions that were required for Nigeria to be taken seriously again by global capital. All five have been met.

What Investors Should Know Right Now

Six stocks hit 52-week highs on the last trading day of this week. MTN Nigeria. Access Holdings. First HoldCo. ETI. NAHCO. TRANSEXPR. The banking sector index is up. The oil and gas index is up. The premium board is up 4.43 percent today alone. The pension index is up 3.11 percent today.

The Nigeria Infrastructure Debt Fund has paid quarterly distributions every single quarter since 2017 and is currently yielding 19.30 percent annually with a qualification date of April 28 for the next payment.

The Vetiva Griffin 30 ETF, which owns the top 30 Nigerian companies in one product, has returned 28.71 percent year to date.

The top money market funds in Nigeria are paying between 20 and 25 percent annually.

FGN Savings Bonds are paying quarterly interest between 15 and 18 percent per year backed by the Federal Government.

The full range of investment instruments available to Nigerian investors right now, from the safest government-backed products to broad equity exposure, are all delivering returns that comfortably exceed inflation for the first time in several years.

The Bigger Picture

Nigeria raised 4.65 trillion naira through its capital market in 24 months to recapitalise its banking sector. Domestic investors provided 72.55 percent of that capital. Several hundred thousand Nigerians participated in a capital market transaction for the first time in their lives. The market absorbed the largest single fundraising exercise in its history without pricing disruption.

That is proof of concept. The capital market works. It is deep enough. It is credibly supervised. It can be trusted with large mandates.

Four more sector recapitalisations follow. Insurance. Pensions. Capital market operators. Development finance institutions. Combined requirement above 10 trillion naira. And sitting above all of that is the Dangote IPO, a single transaction that could reposition Nigeria as the hub of pan-African capital formation.

The next 24 months will be the most consequential period in the history of the Nigerian capital market. The infrastructure is being built. The institutions are being tested. The results are already showing up in the numbers.

The only question worth asking at this point is not whether the Nigerian market is worth watching.

It is whether your money is positioned to participate when the larger moves arrive.

I publish daily market intelligence on X and this Substack covers the deeper analysis behind the numbers. If this briefing was useful, share it with one person who is still on the outside of this market looking in.

The door is open. It has been open all year.

Thanks for reading ProfitableMan's Substack! class="fake-button">

Even more surprising?

It wasn’t the biggest funds that performed best.

It was the smaller, more agile ones.

What this means for investors

This tells us something important:

Making money in the market is not just about being in the market — it’s about how you are positioned.

Mutual funds pool money from different investors and invest across multiple stocks.

So instead of picking individual stocks yourself, professionals manage the portfolio for you.

Top performing mutual funds (Q1 2026)

Here are some of the best-performing Nigerian equity mutual funds:

Zedcrest Equity Fund — 51.86%

Halo Equity Fund — 44.00%

Paramount Equity Fund — 38.70%

Zrosk Magna Equity Fund — 38.56%

PACAM Equity Fund — 38.19%

Cowry Equity Fund — 33.35%

GT Equity Income Fund — 32.25%

CardinalStone Equity Fund — 31.99%

Meristem Equity Market Fund — 31.20%

Legacy Equity Fund — 30.20%

For context, even the largest fund in the market delivered around 29.76%, below several smaller competitors.

The key insight most people miss

Many assume bigger funds perform better.

But this data shows the opposite:

Smaller funds can outperform because they are more flexible and can move faster.

They are often better positioned to take advantage of market opportunities.

Why mutual funds are gaining attention

Mutual funds are becoming more attractive because they:

Provide exposure to multiple stocks at once

Reduce the risk of picking the wrong single stock

Are managed by professionals

Can deliver strong returns in bullish markets

For beginners, this can be a simpler way to enter the market.

But there’s a catch

High returns do not mean guaranteed returns.

Performance can vary depending on:

Market conditions

Fund strategy

Management decisions

What worked in Q1 may not repeat in Q2.

Stocks vs Mutual Funds — what should you choose?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer.

If you want control → pick individual stocks

If you want simplicity → consider mutual funds

Some investors even combine both.

What smart investors should do now

Instead of chasing past returns:

Study how these funds invest

Look at consistency, not just one-quarter performance

Understand your risk level

Start start?

This guide will walk you through the exact steps — in the simplest way possible.

Step 1: Understand what you’re doing

Before you invest any money, understand this:

Buying a stock means you are buying a small part of a company.

You are becoming a part-owner.

That means you should focus on companies you can understand and hold over time.

Step 2: Choose a stockbroker or platform

You cannot buy Nigerian stocks directly from your bank.

You need a licensed stockbroker or a trusted investment platform.

Examples include:

Bamboo, Trove, i-invest and others

Other SEC-registered brokers

These platforms allow you to open an account, fund it, and start investing easily.

Step 3: Open and verify your account

Once you choose a platform:

Sign up with your email

Upload your ID and BVN

Complete verification

This ensures your account is secure and compliant.

Step 4: Fund your account

After verification, deposit money into your account.

Start small.

Even ₦10,000 is enough.

The goal is not to go big immediately — it is to learn and build confidence.

Step 5: Choose the stock you want to buy

By now, you should already have a watchlist.

Pick companies you understand.

For example:

Banks like Zenith, GTCO, UBA

Telecom like MTNN

Industrial companies like Dangote Cement or WAPCO

Take your time. Don’t rush this step.

Step 6: Place your order

Inside your platform:

Search for the stock

Enter the number of shares or amount

Confirm your purchase

Once done, you officially own shares.

Step 7: Track your investment

After buying, avoid checking prices every hour.

Instead:

Monitor occasionally

Follow company updates

Focus on long-term growth

Common mistakes to avoid

Investing without understanding

Chasing quick money

Putting all your money in one place

Panicking when prices drop

Final thought

Starting is the hardest part.

But once you take that first step, everything becomes clearer.

You don’t need a lot of money.

You just need to start.

About “The Naija Investor”

If you want a deeper understanding of how investing works in Nigeria — from stocks to strategy — my guide, The Naija Investor, breaks everything down in a simple and practical way

<a shareholders.

In simple terms:

You own a part of the company → The company makes profit → You get paid.

And yes — this money is paid directly into your bank account.

Why dividends matter

Dividends are one of the simplest ways to build passive income.

They allow you to:

Earn without selling your shares

Benefit from profitable businesses

Build steady income over time

For long-term investors, this can become a reliable source of cash flow.

Upcoming dividend-paying companies in Nigeria

Here are some companies with upcoming dividends:

WAPCO — ₦6.00 | Qual: 3 Apr 2026 | Pay: 30 Apr 2026

MTNN — ₦15.00 | Qual: 8 Apr 2026 | Pay: 5 May 2026

NGX Group — ₦2.00 | Qual: 10 Apr 2026 | Pay: 29 Apr 2026

Geregu — ₦9.00 | Qual: 13 Apr 2026 | Pay: 30 Apr 2026

Transpower — ₦4.00 | Qual: 17 Apr 2026 | Pay: 5 May 17 Jun 2026 | Pay: 2 Jul 2026

⚠️ Important: Qualification date

To receive a dividend, timing is critical.

You must own the stock before the qualification date.

If you buy after that date, you will not receive the dividend — even if the payment date is later.

Payment date

This is when the money is sent to your bank account.

But remember:

Eligibility is based on the qualification date, not the payment date.

Simple example

If a company has:

Qualification date: April 8

Payment date: May 5

You must buy the stock before April 8 to get paid on May 5.

What beginners should keep in mind

Dividends are powerful, but don’t rush in blindly.

Always:

Understand the company

Check their history of paying dividends

Think long-term

Final thought

Investing is not just about buying and selling.

Sometimes, it’s about owning strong companies that pay you consistently.

That’s how money starts working for you

The Naija Investor boo

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" time.

Not gambling.
Not quick money.
Not “double your money in 2 days.”

Real investing is slow — but powerful.

Step 2: Don’t rush into risky things

If you only have ₦10,000, your goal is NOT to get rich fast.

Your goal is:

Learn

Build the habit

Avoid losing your money

Avoid:

“Too good to be true” schemes

Random crypto hype

People promising guaranteed returns

Step 3: Choose a simple starting point

With ₦10,000, here are realistic options:

Option 1: Save + earn small returns

Use trusted apps or platforms that give small interest.

Option 2: Dollar-based saving

Convert a portion to dollars to protect value (very important in Nigeria).

Option 3: Learn before you go big

Use the money to practice and understand how investing works.

Step 4: Be consistent (this is the real secret)

₦10,000 won’t change your life.

But doing it every month will.

If you invest:

₦10,000 monthly

For 1–2 years

You’ll build both:

Capital

Knowledge

Step 5: Focus on long-term thinking

Wealth is not built in days.

It’s built through:

Patience

Discipline

Consistency

The earlier you start, the better.

Final truth

It’s not about how much you start with.

It’s about:

Starting early and staying consistent.

If you found this helpful, subscribe for more simple
