If you have ADHD, you know there’s nothing like a possible scandal to improve concentration.

Dickinson paints children from very old, very rich English families, usually inside their homes. The rooms are spectacular. The children are not. People who could hire anyone to paint their children choose portraits that let them look ordinary. It requires a closer look and more depth of understanding. So INFPs don’t trust other people to recognize its value. You shield your ideals and the huge amount you care until someone has proven they deserve to see them.

But what would proof look like? You can’t say, because proving someone would honor your real self would require letting them see your real self. So you wait for safety before becoming visible, when becoming visible is the only way to find out whether you’re safe.

A real person might love you deeply and still miss things. They might understand something important immediately and misunderstand something else for years. They will almost certainly disappoint you. But disappointment is different from danger.

We don’t know whether Dickinson’s children feel as secure as the portraits make them look. But the paintings suggest what security makes possible: you can be seen without first making sure the person looking will see you correctly. You don’t have to prove you’re extraordinary. You don’t even have to control what they think.

Abundance doesn’t mean trusting everyone. It means knowing that being misunderstood doesn’t make you smaller; someone failure to recognize your sincerity does not diminish its (1961)

The INFP group met last night. The most interesting part of the discussion came after I talked about contemporary trends in literature when the group started making connections that I hadn’t seen before.

INFPs have spent their whole writing lives pressuring themselves to think more linearly: outline, build a novelist’s arc.

But an INFP brain bounces — fiction to philosophy to news to memory to some fact about knots from Wikipedia — and finds the connection nobody else saw. That used to look like a lack of discipline, but it’s how we all read now; the INFP brain is fine-tuned for the internet world.

One of my favorite poems is “Diving into the Wreck” by Adrienne Rich. Each stage of my life the poem has meant something different to me. Today I read the diver goes down alone, with a knife and a camera and a book of myths. Most people go diving for treasures, but Rich says she came for “the wreck and not the story of the wreck / the thing itself and not the myth.”

That’s the writing lesson for right now: The goal is to stay in the wreck. Stay in the moment, in the mess, in the thing itself. Don’t surface with an answer, because AI already has all the answers. If a reader wants to know how to grieve, how to leave a marriage, what the French Revolution means — AI will tell them, instantly, in clean prose.

And AI already knows how to write a linear novel because AI is literally a prediction machine — it works by guessing the most likely next word. So of course it’s great at stories that unfold in a logical, predictable way. We cannot write 20th-century literature better than AI can and we should stop trying.

What AI can’t do is be unpredictable on purpose. So our job as writers is to convey the unpredictable messiness of our world, and no one’s better at that than INFPs because that’s where you go when you say you need alone time. You go to make connections amidst the tangle.

Mark Rothko is a visual representation of this idea. Rothko’s big blocks of color were a way for him to study the edges, where the colors meet. The intersection is unstable, and unstable is interesting.

Writing works the same way. The middle of a genre is settled. A novel that is only a novel, an essay that is only an essay — we know how those go, and so does AI. The intersection of genres is a place where writing is unpredictable and today that’s where writing is most human.

This is why I’m obsessed with contemporary writers who are doing mashups.

Interior Strandgade 30 by Vilhelm Hammershøi (1900)

Until we had kids, the biggest conflict Nino and I had was over his bike. We lived in a 500-square-foot apartment in New York and the living room was also our bedroom, and the bike storage.

I kept asking him to put the bike in storage.

Him: “If I did that, I’d never ride it.”

Me: “You never ride it anyway.”

I thought we were arguing about square footage. To me, the apartment was an expression of order and every unnecessary object made it harder for me to think. To Nino, the apartment was an expression of possibility and putting the bike in storage would be admitting the that part of his life might never come back.

I understand that much better now. One of the biggest differences between ENTJs and INFPs is that ENTJs are constantly closing doors. We choose. We commit. We eliminate options so we can move forward.

INFPs experience those same decisions as losses, because every unrealized possibility feels real enough to mourn.

I’ve noticed this in myself while getting ready for tonight’s INFP discussion. I kept putting off writing a reminder. Because as long as I hadn’t written it, I could imagine a hundred ways to tell you about the topic. Once I publish the post, all those other possibilities disappeared.

That’s a very INFP way of relating to the world, and it’s one of the reasons so many of you are drawn to literature: Reading and writing are acts of possibility. They ask, “What else could this person have become? What else could this sentence mean? What if the world were organized another way?”

Most people read to find answers, but you read to discover possibilities.

That’s what I want to talk about tonight: why contemporary literature increasingly rewards the kind of mind that naturally sees possibilities before conclusions, and why I think INFPs are uniquely positioned to understand where writing is going next.

We’ll talk about contemporary authors who make me most excited. I hope you’ll come.

We’re meeting tonight at 8:00 p.m. ET. If you can’t make the live discussion, I’ll post a summary afterward.

something that happened to you and within three paragraphs you’re apologizing for it. Not literally — you’re too good a writer for that. You apologize structurally. You add context so it makes sense. You explain what you felt so the reader isn’t confused. You round it into a story with a beginning and an arc, because that’s what writing is supposed to look like. And by the time you’re done, the thing is coherent and dead, and you file it away, because you can tell it’s not true anymore.

Annie Ernaux had this exact problem and her solution was to refuse the equipment. In La Place, the book about her father, she announces near the beginning that she will not use fiction’s tools — no scenes rebuilt from imagination, no interiority she can’t verify, no lyricism. She calls her method écriture plate. Flat writing. She lists what her father owned, what he said, what he was ashamed of, and she does not connect it into a story, because a story would be a betrayal — it would convert his life into entertainment for the class of people he could never join.

Read one of her paragraphs and you can feel what’s missing: the transitions. The “and this made me realize.” The conclusion. She leaves the fragments sitting next to each other, and the meaning happens in the gap between them — in you, the reader, doing the connecting. Which means the reader does the exact thing INFPs do all day involuntarily: hold two unrelated pieces and feel the current jump between them.

The thing you’ve been treating as your failure — you can’t smooth things into narrative, you can’t stay on topic, you keep juxtaposing when you should be transitioning — is her entire method. She won the Nobel Prize for not transitioning. The self you keep trying to install before you write, the disciplined one who builds arcs, was never coming. You don’t need her. You need a form that runs on fragments, and it already exists, and it’s the most celebrated form in contemporary literature.

The question is not whether you can write like Ernaux. The question is what she had to give up to write that way, because you’ll have to give up the same thing, and it isn’t what you think.

Even if you never plan to write a book, you’ll probably recognize yourself. Ernaux isn’t just showing a way to write. She’s showing a way to stop organizing your life around making other people comfortable. She’s showing what it looks like when a mind refuses to translate itself into conventional form.

On July 21 at 8pm Eastern I’m doing a close reading of two pages of La Place for paid subscribers. We’ll watch, line by line, how Ernaux resists the urge to explain, smooth over, and shape experience into the story everyone expects. It’s a chance to see a completely different way of thinking on the page—and to discover options for yourself that are hard to imagine until you see someone else refuse the rules.

Bring the draft you abandoned if you have one. Or just bring your curiosity. I think you’ll recognize the moment Ernaux chooses herself over a story, and you may recognize yourself as well.

INFPs: Your inability to the writers who won were the ones who could self-edit. Discipline, structure, the ability to hold a 400-page architecture in your head and sand it down for years. INFPs were told to become that kind of writer, and mostly they failed, because self-editing in real time is the opposite of how an INFP mind works. An INFP generates connections faster than they can evaluate them. That used to be the problem.

AI just made it the advantage. AI is a phenomenal editor. If your gift was tightening, structuring, polishing — that gift is now a commodity. Anyone can have it for $20 a month. What AI cannot do is make a connection that doesn’t already make sense. By definition, a language model produces the statistically likely next thought. The unlikely next thought — the one that shouldn’t work but does — is the only thing left that’s scarce. INFPs produce unlikely next thoughts as a default setting. You’ve spent your whole life apologizing for it.

And the form caught up too. The novel as endurance project is not where literature is happening. Annie Ernaux won the Nobel for snapshots — short, fragmented memoir where the personal is the lens for everything else: class, history, sex, news. That structure is the INFP structure.

INFPs can’t help funneling the world through personal meaning, and they can’t help connecting their own life to the greater good. For decades that read as self-indulgent. Now it’s the dominant literary mode: memoir peppered with research, social issues refracted through one person’s interior life. The thing you do naturally is the thing the culture is rewarding.

INFPs are not going to command attention by being loud. That’s never been the move. But participating in the literary movement of your moment — quietly, from the inside — is how INFPs have always made their mark. The movement is here. It’s shaped like you.

I’m starting a monthly live session for INFPs and our first topic will be INFPs and writing: what the current moment rewards, how to work with your wiring instead of against it, and how to actually finish things in a form that suits you. We’ll meet at 8pm Eastern on Tuesday, June 23. You need to be a paid subscriber to attend.

INFP: You're not avoiding conflict, you're avoiding what it says about you

Most people experience conflict as a problem to solve: what do we do about this? conflict as a problem to solve: what do we do about this? INFPs experience conflict is a referendum: what does this say about me?

Once you have that question in your head, your brain redirects toward the only problem that feels urgent: holding onto an identity you can live with. So conflict is something you are trying to survive:

You start asking questions instead of stating what you want.
You soften your preferences.
You absorb what the other person needs.

This is not engaging but rather putting up a wall to protect yourself. For an INFP, stating a clear want creates the possibility of more conflict. But the more you try to protect the relationship, the harder you make it to reach you. When you go quiet to think, other people don’t necessarily know that. They think you’re in the middle of negotiating conflict, and then you disappear.

It’s not your desires that damage the relationship. It’s your absence. You think you’re protecting the relationship from damage, but you’re actually making it impossible for the other person to stay connected to you.

You don’t need to process faster, you just need to make your processing visible. Say one thing before you go quiet: “I need some time to think about this, and I’ll come back to it.” That sentence turns withdraw into a promise, and the person waiting on the other side of your silence finally knows you haven't left.

INFPs can’t reach people from outside the system

Most As an INFP you know you’re not part of that, so you step away.

You pay attention to the small things other people miss in order to find space and meaning. But meaning only exists in contrast to the thing you’re pulling away from.

You can’t matter to people you refuse to be in contact with.

I recognized this pattern in Mahler. As a composer, he needed a massive orchestra to express what he heard in his head — those small, strange melodies inside the constant human drive to compete. But he couldn’t access that orchestra without entering the system. So he converted from Judaism to Christianity to get a leadership position in Austria’s orchestra. But even though he was in the system, when they asked him to prove his conversion by writing religious music, he said no.

You don’t have to become the system. Enter it just enough to bring what only you can hear.

And if you want inspiration, I recommend the first movement of Mahler’s Third Symphony. The low pounding rhythms of the orchestra would be insufferable without the joyful unexpected melodies that bring depth and make me think: It’s the sonic version of an INFP working within the system.

Am I an INFP because of childhood doesn’t create your personality type. But it can make you feel like a bad version of it.

Personality type is about what drives you. Everyone adapts to their environment. We all do things we dislike. We all shape ourselves around the communities we live in. But underneath all of that is a persistent inner motivation. It shows up over and over again across your life.

For an INFP, that motivation is making internal connections. INFPs are constantly connecting ideas, experiences, memories, and feelings inside their own minds. When an INFP doesn’t have time to think and reflect, the day can feel unfinished.

That drive isn’t caused by trauma. But trauma can interrupt it because it forces you to focus on survival instead of being yourself. When a child has to spend their energy managing danger, unpredictability, or emotional neglect, their natural tendencies become secondary.

People who grow up with trauma often feel like they’re failing at their own personality. They look at the strengths associated with their type and think: That’s not me. But usually the drive is still there underneath everything else.

I see this in myself. I’m an ENTJ, which means I’m driven to build systems and shape the future. That impulse has never gone away. No matter what I’m doing, I’m thinking about problems and how they might be solved.

But a large part of my life has been spent dealing with childhood trauma instead of building things. I stepped away from work to care for my kids because I didn’t have parents caring for me. I spend enormous amounts of time writing because it’s the only reliable way I have to keep track of my life. My drive to build the future is still there. It’s just competing with the work of repairing the past.

But the personality underneath the trauma doesn’t disappear. So recovery is about slowly reclaiming the parts of yourself that had to go silent while you were trying to survive.

It’s hard to believe who we really are when we’ve been told not to trust our own instincts. Personality type is like a disinterested third party saying, just because you functioned one way as a child doesn’t mean that’s who you are. That gives me the bravery to believe in myself. I hope it does the same for you.

INFP: When nothing feels meaningful with meaning because your standard for meaning keeps rising.

Once you’ve experienced something that feels deeply aligned with your values, ordinary life starts to feel shallow by comparison. So your rule becomes: I only do things that are meaningful. But over time the definition of meaningful gets narrower. The bar rises. And eventually nothing quite clears it.

Psychologists call this existential perfectionism, which means your value system becomes so refined that real life can’t satisfy it. From the outside, this can look like quitting or losing interest. From the inside it feels like a heavy weight.

With existential perfectionism every meaningful thing you do shows you how much more there is to do. Success creates obligation. I learned about this from watching Nino.

When I met Nino he was in film school experimenting with new media. One of his projects was an interview with a man dying of AIDS. The conversation ran for hours — chaotic, overwhelming and politically important.

Nino spent two years editing it. What he finally released was ten minutes: just the moments the man broke down, and the moments he steadied himself with a cigarette. Everything else cut away. Just grief, and the effort to survive it.

The film still screens at festivals. It becomes more powerful over time as viewers understand the history around it. Nino gave people a way to feel something they didn’t live through.

Around the same time he had work shown at the Whitney. Then he stopped making art. He told me he had nothing important enough to say. Later he spent years working to improve conditions at Rikers Island. Then decided he hadn’t done enough and left. We had a child together. He was a deeply present father. Then decided he was failing and asked for a divorce.

For years I thought he was quitting things. Now I see something different. He wasn’t running away from meaning. He was searching for it so intensely that nothing felt sufficient.

The problem is that meaning doesn’t work that way. Meaning isn’t something you find before you act. It’s something you make by staying.

Nino knows how to do this. He spent two years sitting with raw material, cutting away everything except what mattered. The film holds because he committed to it. He just struggles to extend that same patience to his own life.

When your standard for meaning gets high enough, your own life stops qualifying. The work you’ve done, the people you’ve stayed for, the small persistent ways you’ve mattered — none of it clears the bar. The meaning you’re searching for is often already there. It’s in what you built while you were busy deciding it wasn’t enough.

INFPs don't need motivation, you need inevitability

.

I want long blocks of time alone to make connections in my head. I also want experiences that open new possibilities. The problem is that the place where my inner life is richest is also the place that makes leaving feel irrational.

I have an ongoing argument with myself about why I pay so much to live in downtown Boston. The official reason is convenience. I’m in the center of everything. If something comes up at the last minute, I can go, and every train to somewhere far is close to my apartment. But the real reason I live in the center of an expensive city is I hate leaving my apartment.

Nino and I have been divorced for 20 years, but we genuinely like being together. I like being together in my apartment. Nino likes to go out together and see things. Most of the time, I just say yes to whatever he suggests. Not because I’m easygoing—but I trust his high bar for interesting.

But no matter how excited I was when he bought the tickets, getting myself off the sofa is hard every time. I don’t feel ready. I don’t feel motivated. I don’t want to interrupt my interior thread.

But every time I go, I end up liking it. So I stopped listening to how I feel before I leave and started trusting the pattern after I go. Because I know I don’t just need someone to organize the plan. I need someone to say, “OK, it’s time.” Once that happens, I won’t back out. Guilt succeeds where motivation fails.

Yesterday we went to a movie at Harvard’s film archive showing of L’Avventura. This means a lecture about a movie from the 1960s whose selling point is: “experimental narrative style…central plot points forgotten.” I assumed we’d be the only people there. Instead, it was packed.

After an hour I felt like I got the point: experimental structure and hot Italian girls. I looked at Nino and nudged him. He gestured with his head toward the door. And we left. And I was so relieved.

This is where I have classic INFP tension: I want long blocks of time alone to make connections in my head, but I also want experiences that open new possibilities.

Possibilities don’t come from comfort. They come from exposure to things that are new, surprising, uncomfortable, and not under our control. But when home is a place where inner life is rich, leaving feels irrational.

At the same time, the idea of the world is enticing. The idea of what could happen. The idea of how you could be seen.

INFPs in this situation are likely to wait. You wait until conditions are perfect. Until you feel ready. Until you know you’ll present yourself in exactly the right way.

The problem is that waiting doesn’t protect meaning. It shrinks it.

Everything at home has more weight when I’m also connected to the world—even imperfectly. Even if I end up leaving early.

The structure I’ve built for myself is I let someone else choose. Nino picks what we do. I go. I don’t negotiate. I don’t optimize. All I have to do is say yes to the tickets and walk out the door when it’s time.

And I think this would work for INFPs. Because freedom doesn’t come from wanting to go out. It comes from building a structure that makes going unavoidable.

INFPs: Flow isn’t escaping yourself. Not while you’re in it—that part feels amazing. You write for three hours, time disappears, and for once you’re not monitoring whether you’re being authentic enough, kind enough, deep enough.

But then it ends. And immediately, you start auditing.

“Was I really present? Or was I on autopilot? Did I betray my values by not consciously checking them? Was that even me?”

Here’s what’s actually happening: You’ve confused vigilance with authenticity.

You live in permanent self-surveillance. Every choice gets filtered through your internal ethics board. “Does this align with who I am? Am I being true to myself right now?” You think if you’re not constantly checking, you might accidentally violate your values.

Flow bypasses all of that. You act without checking. You create without narrating. And that terrifies you—because if you weren’t consciously monitoring, how do you know you were really you?

But here’s the truth: Flow is you. The part that endlessly asks “Am I being authentic?” isn’t your authenticity. It’s your anxiety. When you’re in flow, you’re not abandoning your values. You’re living them. You’re so aligned there’s nothing left to monitor.

But you don’t trust that. You’ve spent so long believing authenticity requires effort, consciousness, vigilance. That if something comes easily, it doesn’t count.

So when flow happens—when you’re writing something that matters, helping someone who needs exactly what you have, creating something that feels true—you panic afterward. You retroactively audit it, looking for proof you weren’t really present. You find all the moments you weren’t consciously checking yourself and decide those don’t count as “real.”

You’re punishing yourself for not suffering enough, but those are the moments when your values and actions are so perfectly aligned that the gap between them disappears.

You don’t need to be vigilant to be authentic. You need to be aligned. And as an INFP you are aligned - it’s who you are. Your value system isn’t going to disappear just because you stop checking it every thirty seconds. Flow is what happens when you trust that.

So the next time you crash after flow, ask yourself: “What if the reason I wasn’t suffering is because I was finally, completely myself?”

Because you’re most yourself when you stop asking permission to be.

Why INFPs rebuild dreams in private

You know that moment when reality doesn’t match what you thought it could be?

You know that moment when reality doesn’t match what you thought it could be? Not what you wanted but what it could be, if everyone involved cared as much as you do?

That’s the trap for INFPs because you’re primary approach to the world is feelings (F) and your secondary is introversion (i). Your Fi holds this uncompromising vision of how things should feel, how people should treat each other, what integrity actually looks like. And then you a thousand ways it could happen.

But then it doesn’t happen. And you don’t just feel disappointed—you feel betrayed by the universe itself.

You go quiet. Not because you’re sulking. Because you’re reverse-engineering the disappointment, asking: Where did my vision diverge from what’s actually possible? Was I wrong about the potential, or wrong about the people?

And then instead of lowering your standards for meaning, you stop showing your vision to people who wouldn’t understand. You rebuild the dream somewhere safer.

The world calls this INFP behavior “unrealistic,” but I think it’s the most ruthless realism there is. As an INFP you are clear that most people don’t value your unflinching sincerity, so you don’t share it with most people.

Your Fi makes you feel like every concession is a piece of yourself you’re wasting. But sometimes the gap between your vision and reality isn’t because people don’t care. It’s because they can’t see what you see yet.

That’s where your imaginative strength will help. You can find another path that doesn’t require you to betray yourself, but also doesn’t require everyone else to become who you need them to be.

You’re not wrong to want meaning. You’re not naive for refusing to settle. But you are making yourself smaller by hiding every time the world disappoints you.

When you actually show up with your full sincerity and let it touch something real, you create the thing the rest of us forgot we were building toward. The world will never look like it’s ready for you. But it still needs what only you can give it.

So maybe the question isn’t “How do I protect my ideals from a disappointing world?” Maybe it’s “How do I stay true to myself while actually participating in the world I have?”

You’re so good at meaning; don’t let yourself forget about mattering.

How INFPs change the room without saying a word

I tell Nino a story about trying to get the dog out of the water and how kids started spraying her.

I tell Nino a story about trying to get the dog out of the water and how kids started spraying her. I have so many things I want to say about it, and I want him to match my outrage. But he just says, “Uh huh.”

I know he’s saying it to show he’s listening and processing, but it drives me crazy how little he reacts. Still, I know that as an ENTJ I’m exhausting—I railroad people. When he’s around, he pulls me out of myself to make room for his internal dialogue. Everyone benefits from that space he creates.

I saw the same thing when I was running groups of INFPs. I’d start talking and get almost nothing back—no interruptions, no one jumping in to argue or play devil’s advocate. Without a foil to push against, I had to slow down. Get calmer. Then I’d pause, and the pause would stretch long enough that I’d start to feel uncertain.

Only then would the INFPs speak. And the discussion would go deeper than usual because I’d allowed in the gray areas. That’s when I realized: INFPs aren’t passive listeners. You apply force by way of withholding.

Most people give a quick hit of validation or conflict, but not you. You create a vacuum that pulls people inward, toward their own core beliefs. Your refusal to engage on superficial terms forces people to meet you where you are.

You experience this as Do people even notice me? But the real question is: Do you notice you? They feel your presence profoundly but don’t have language to describe your impact.

It’s clear to me, though, that you add weight to a conversation, not volume. So stop measuring your impact by how loudly people react. If you wait to feel understood before you act, your depth becomes a camouflage.

Are you masking or mirroring?

One of your quiet powers is mirroring.

One of your quiet powers is mirroring. You reflect people's depth back to them. You notice their moods, their contradictions, and their hopes. And you let them see themselves more clearly through your presence. That's why people feel understood around you.

But INFP mirroring is always self-referential. You're using someone else's story as a doorway into your own inner world — then reflecting back what resonates inside yourself. This is why people sometimes misinterpret INFPs as "making everything about themselves." You are relating things back to yourself, but in a way that creates deeper connection, not shallow self-focus.

The problem is when mirroring slides into masking. Mirroring is a gift where you stay yourself while showing someone their truth. Masking is survival where you abandon yourself to become what you think they need.

So ask yourself: after spending time with someone, do you feel more present in yourself or less?

More present? That was mirroring. You found the part of their experience that lives in you too, and reflecting it back created deeper connection for both of you.

Less present? That was masking. You abandoned yourself to become what you thought they needed.

Your gift is not disappearing into other people, it’s showing them their truth while staying rooted in your own. If you abandon yourself, you lose what makes your presence valuable.

Trust that your authentic resonance is enough. It always has been.

INFP daydreaming: When it's good for you, and when it's not

Most people daydream about 50% of their day — it's completely normal and healthy.

Most people daydream about 50% of their day — it's completely normal and healthy. Daydreaming actually helps us plan for the future and process complex ideas.

But there’s a difference between healthy daydreaming and getting stuck in your head. The key is the quality of your attention.

If you're focused and calm while daydreaming, you’ll probably have those inspired, creative moments that lead to genuine insights. This is the INFP brain doing what it does best.

At work, researchers identified two types of daydreaming: neurotic daydreaming (common in S/J types) creates mental loops and stuck feelings; creative daydreaming (your specialty) is a precursor to innovation and meaningful action

MRIs show us that when people grind through tasks, the reflective, introspective brain literally shuts down. Abstract thinking—the thing that makes us most human—happens when we're not checking items off lists.

While most personality types prefer to power through to-do lists, INFPs daydream more than any other type. So when you feel frustrated by your slow pace through a task list, consider just putting that list to the side. Your mind wanders into territories others don't explore, bringing back ideas and perspectives that make all of us more thoughtful, creative, and ultimately more human.

I wish I’d understood INFPs before we got divorced

Nino is my ex-husband, but now we spend most of our time together.

Nino is my ex-husband, but now we spend most of our time together. Not all our time — we don’t live together — but neither of us has another friend in Boston besides each other.

People often ask why we divorced when we get along so well. For years, I didn’t know. Then I realized: he’s an INFP. Suddenly, our marriage made sense. He always felt like he was disappointing everyone — especially me — and I did nothing to convince him otherwise.

The truth is, I loved being married to him. I loved the way he read to the kids. I loved holding hands on a hike while the kids ran circles around us. But I mostly told him that the emotional things he noticed were getting in the way when I had more important work to do.

After we divorced, I saw nothing was more important than the emotional things. In the silence that replaced my criticism, I could thank him for the special time he spent with the kids — holding the baby kittens, playing Pokémon cards, searching for frogs — all the stuff I had no patience for.

He changed, too. Is there a better way to structure my day that doesn't feel like structure?

Only an INFP would ask it like that — with that poetic little turn in the second sentence. Most people ask: How do I structure my day? Valerie asked: How do I structure my day in a way that doesn't feel like structure?

For INFPs, the right kind of structure is more like a ritual than a schedule. Each morning, ask yourself: What do I actually care about today? Then turn that into one, small task that you can finish in less than an hour. This works because meaning is what gets you going.

You can also try organizing your day around three types of energy. For example:

Morning for output (creative work)

Afternoon for admin stuff

Evening for input (reading, listening, etc.)

But there are actually two different kinds of stuck-ness and you need to know which one you’re dealing with.

INFP-style procrastination: You want to do the thing, but you're not sure it's the right thing. You’re still thinking about if it really is all that meaningful.

Executive function inertia: You know you want to do it — there's no internal debate. But you literally cannot start or switch tasks. You don’t know why. You just can’t.

That second kind of stuck will not respond to gentle explorations in meaning. You need physical motion first. Stand up. Do something concrete and easy. For me, that's cleaning — it somehow unlocks my ability to transition into writing. Find your version of that transition activity.

Remember: you’re not unproductive. You are dealing with emotional complexity or neurodiversity or both. Those are the traits that allow you to see and feel what other people miss. That’s intrinsically productive and you bring it every single day.

What happened when I got six INFPs together (and why I forgot to hit record)

The odds of a group of INFPs ending up in the same place and actually connecting with each other are almost nonexistent.

The odds of a group of INFPs ending up in the same place and actually connecting with each other are almost nonexistent. It’s not that you don’t want connection — you crave it — but this behavior has a name: non‑clustering.

Extroverts cluster naturally. Even most introverts cluster once they find their people. But INFPs? You’re the rare ones who almost never do.

Two other types are non-clusting, just not as extreme as you. INTJs avoid socializing, but they cluster strategically because they know where the payoff is, and they’ll tolerate a group long enough to get what they need. ISFPs don’t like groups either, but they’re comfortable simply being present.

When you’re in a group, you’re managing two things at once: the group dynamic and your relentlessly complex inner world. While everyone else is just there, you’re tracking ten layers of meaning — what was said, what was unsaid, what it all might mean — and it’s exhausting.

That stress makes you develop anti‑clustering habits. You stay quiet, so no one knows you’re there. And you’re so used to feeling misunderstood that you stop expecting anyone to get you — which, given how rare INFPs are, is actually a pretty rational response. Then, even if you do find someone, the idea of following up feels like watering a plant that may never sprout.

This is why our INFP group felt so magical. Six INFPs, on the same Zoom call, talking to each other. I’ve never seen that many of you in one place, let alone talking this much. I was so engaged by the conversation I forgot to record the first session. And when I finally remembered, I thought: If I say I’m recording they might all stop talking.

So I didn’t record. And this week I’ve watched the unclusterable cluster in a deep, meaningful way. When INFPs do connect, it’s not small talk; it’s instant depth.

But here’s the problem: three people bought the course expecting the recordings only. So I’m doing another session, scheduled around you instead of the other way around.

But I got myself into trouble. Three people bought the course thinking they’d just listen to the recordings. Now I see they’d miss the most special part -- the live connection. So I’m doing another group for those three people, and you’re welcome to join. You're not trying to impress anyone. You're trying to create something that feels true. Your sense that there’s a perfect truth - deep enough, honest enough, aligned enough - explains why your best work often stays hidden.

There’s always a risk that an INFP is disappearing behind that perfectionism. Like when you don’t speak up, or apply, or finish the thing you care most about. And then the world misses out on what only you can offer.

I know that feeling. I used to think I wasn’t a perfectionist because I didn’t care what people think of me. But then I realized: I care deeply whether my writing means something to the reader. And that’s where my perfectionism lives.

I’ve learned to manage it by sharing anyway. I publish things I’m not totally ready to share. It’s excruciating. But the more I do it, the braver I get because I find more meaning after I publish.

Most opportunities don’t wait for inner peace. And your work doesn’t have to be perfect to matter.
Sometimes “done” is when it reaches another person.
Sometimes “enough” is when you finally stop hiding.

This is exactly the kind of thing we’ll talk about in the INFP group starting next week. If you’ve been circling around something meaningful and not finishing it, this group will help you get unstuck. No whiz-bang productivity apps. Just understanding that meaning comes from movement.

Join the INFP group.

– Penelope
