Once upon a time, very different from our time, there was a kingdom where women played basketball.

In that kingdom, skill was required to be drafted into the WNBA. Little or nothing was required to determine whether you were, in fact, a woman. Everyone seemed to know.

Women played happily, fiercely, and competitively against other women. Some were tall, some were fast, some could shoot from almost anywhere, while others played ferocious defense, blocking shots and stealing the ball with the enthusiasm of a medieval highwayman.

There were some, however, who appeared to have wandered onto the court directly from the set of Mad Max.

To the spectator, the players were classy, ghetto, or somewhere in between. And the more ghetto a player appeared, the more certain some spectators became that she was a lesbian. But nevertheless, they were women. And in those days, that seemed to be enough.

There was, of course, a magnificent structure built around these female basketball players.

The Team President oversaw operations. The General Manager worried about drafts, trades, contracts, and all the other matters that make basketball executives look perpetually constipated. The Head Coach determined strategy and tried to explain to twenty-something athletes why they should pass the ball when they were absolutely certain they could score themselves.

Assistant coaches searched for talent. Vice presidents became involved in transactions. Scouts watched players. Development personnel developed players. Trainers trained them. Medical personnel patched them back together, especially when the ghetto players caused injury…

Meta’s settlement with state attorneys general is being celebrated as a victory over Big Tech. It may turn out to be something closer to the opposite: a case study in how regulation ends up entrenching the companies it’s meant to restrain.

Meta will pay billions to settle claims involving Facebook and Instagram. More consequentially, it agreed to an elaborate regulatory regime for users under 18—daily use limits, nighttime restrictions, school-hour notification limits, enhanced age verification, restrictions on certain features, stronger parental controls, and scrutiny from an independent auditor and the attorneys general themselves.

Some of this may be sound policy. But stack the pieces together and paradoxes emerge, ones that ought to bother conservatives—and anyone wary of government’s expanding footprint in private markets.

Start with privacy. Part of the original complaint was that Meta collected too much information about children. The fix requires Meta to get considerably better at identifying them. A 15-year-old claiming to be 19 can’t be taken at his word, so Meta needs sharper age-assurance tools—and the harder government pushes to stop teenagers from slipping past the restrictions, the more sophisticated that identification machinery has to get. We are protecting children’s privacy by requiring a company to know more about them.

Dressed in pink, around 300 women gathered outside a Massachusetts courthouse on Thursday wearing shirts emblazoned with slogans such as “Believe”, “She Needed Help”, and “Peace For Lindsay”.

The protesters prayed and made heart shapes with their hands. Some held up flags from across the world; others cradled babies.

The woman whom they, and scores of others at rallies across the globe, including the UK, Portugal and Peru, had turned out to support? Lindsay Clancy, the mother accused of murdering her three children aged 3, 5 and 8 months.

Ms Clancy, a 36-year-old nurse, does not deny killing Cora, Dawson and Callan by strangling them with exercise bands. However, she claims that it was not murder because she was suffering from postpartum psychosisat the time.

The condition, also known as puerperal psychosis or postnatal psychosis, is a mental health disorder affecting around one in 1,000 new mothers. Symptoms – including mania, delusions, hallucinations, low mood and confusion – typically develop soon after giving birth, but can sometimes occur weeks later.

Across 46 state agencies in North Carolina, 8,826 government roles have remained unfilled for a minimum of six months. On August 20th 2025, those vacancies totaled $1.04 billion dollars of “lapsed salary;” money budgeted to pay someone for a job that nobody’s doing.

North Carolina agencies continued to budget salary despite having no one to pay. The state continued budgeting the money regardless of the need for compensation.

What is a vacancy Alex?

The Department of Health and Human Services accounted for over one-third of those vacancies at 3,074 empty positions. Those jobs budgeted $375 million dollars that nobody collected. Corrections was second with $228.6 million and Commerce added another $226.1 million from just 684 vacant slots.

Empty slots can stay open for years. One open psychiatrist job at DHHS has accrued more than $1.5 million in lapsed salary since it was first posted in 2020. The explanation from DHHS, obtained through public records requests, repeatedly read “unqualified applicants.”

When auditors dug into 4,515 jobs vacant for at least a year, they found 190 positions that had been open for over half a decade. Another wrinkle: Approximately 3,000 of the vacant positions couldn’t be filled due to legal restrictions imposed after North Carolina failed to enact a budget before the start of FY 2025. Positions in those agencies were frozen until the budget was finalized, and couldn’t be filled regardless of agency need or desire.

For millions of Americans, flying is routine. For pilots and flight attendants, however, spending thousands of hours at cruising altitude may come with an occupational hazard passengers rarely think about: cosmic radiation.

New research published in JAMA Internal Medicine and reported by the Associated Press examined more than 12 million U.S. death certificates and found pilots and flight attendants had the highest proportions of deaths from cancers associated with radiation exposure among the occupations analyzed.

Researchers found 6.9% of flight attendant deaths and 6.7% of pilot deaths were attributed to radiation-associated cancers, compared with 5% among other workers.

The cancers examined included leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, melanoma and other skin cancers, as well as cancers of the breast and thyroid.

At cruising altitude, the Earth’s atmosphere provides less protection from cosmic radiation than it does at ground level. That means airline crews can accumulate substantially more exposure over years or decades spent in the air.

But radiation may not be the only concern. Pilots and flight attendants also contend with disrupted circadian rhythms, overnight flights, changing time zones, irregular sleep schedules and other occupational stresses that researchers believe warrant further investigation.

The findings raise a major public-health question: Do we adequately understand - and adequately protect against - the long-term health consequences of spending an entire career at 35,000 feet?

On July 31, an important article appeared in the Wall Street Journal: “From Lunar Landing to Lunar Land Rights: Establishing Property in Space Is Crucial to Unlocking Its Economic Potential.”

It was written by John Chisholm and Dan Garretson. The authors write: “At the lunar south pole, mines may someday harvest ice for rocket propellant, avoiding Earth launch costs. To attract investment, miners will need legal acknowledgment of first and continuous occupation, control over land use, the ability to exclude others and assurance that land and improvements can be sold or transferred. In short, ownership rights to lunar real estate. Property rights typically co-evolve with commercial activity: An initial legal floor enables activity, experience exposes gaps, and law hardens provisional practice into financeable rights. Homesteaders fenced and plowed the American West; Congress later codified their claims into law. Lunar property rights will likely follow the same path.”

It is very encouraging that the debate over property rights—a central theme of my book “New Space Capitalism” - is now entering the public arena.

The second Trump administration’s continuation of Biden-era progressive antitrust enforcement has been an unwelcome surprise.

Some of these antitrust cases originated in the first Trump administration but were embellished as they were advanced by Lina Khan, Biden’s chair of the Federal Trade Commission. In one case, Trump enforcers continued to use Khan’s amended complaint that said Meta had an 85 percent monopoly on consumers’ time spent on the “personal social networking” market. U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg dismissed the government’s case, noting that regulators had ignored new competitors to Meta such as TikTok and YouTube to bolster their claim that a monopoly existed.

The administration’s rhetoric is not much better. Vice President JD Vance recently called for a shift from Milton Friedman’s defense of free-market capitalism to a Hamiltonian focus on big-government projects, adding that the aim of government policy should be to make the economy “a tool to service the dignity of the human person.” Trump’s FTC chair, Andrew Ferguson, said government intervention is necessary “to restrict the exercise of liberty when that exercise of liberty meaningfully diminishes other people’s flourishing.”

David Axelrod, one of the architects behind President Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns, believes other progressives might stand a better chance of getting elected if, in his view, one of their more unserious candidates loses an upcoming primary.

“It would be good for Abdul El-Sayed if Francesca Hong loses her bid to become the Democratic nominee in Wisconsin next week,” Axelrod wrote in a post to X.

“He is a serious person. She is a font of zany liberal, faculty lounge exotica. But the [Republicans] … would surely try to link Abdul and Hong as philosophical kin.”

Axelrod’s comments seem to indicate that despite their recent success in the 2026 midterms, not all progressives are viewed equally across the party — that some of them are seen as political liabilities even among themselves.

“This tweet is a perfect example of why the consultant class keeps losing elections. They’re totally clueless, and they’re hellbent on keeping working-class people out of politics,” Hong wrote about Axelrod’s X post. “I’ve spent more time in kitchens than faculty lounges. Perhaps you’d like to come to Wisconsin and work a Friday night dinner rush with me?”

Hong, a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly who is running to become the next governor of Wisconsin, has advocated for a wide slew of policies that put her solidly in the progressive camp.
