The Aliveness Test

I keep a simple test I offer to clients who can’t quite name what’s wrong even though the balance sheet says everything is right: think of the last time an hour passed and you didn’t check the clock once. Not because you were distracted — because you were alive inside it.

For some people that hour was on a hiking trail. For others it was at a workbench, a piano, a garden bed, a spreadsheet solving a genuinely interesting problem. The content of the hour matters less than the fact of it: somewhere in your recent life, time stopped being a thing you were spending and became a thing you were simply inside of.

Now ask the harder question: when was the last time that happened? If the honest answer stretches back years rather than weeks, you are not lazy, broken, or ungrateful for your good fortune. You are, quite simply, out of practice at being alive on purpose. Of the Four Dreams, Leaving Legacy is the one that asks the most direct question about mystery: how do you plan seriously for people you will never meet?

I’ve come to think legacy work is really Possibility Planning stretched across time instead of across a single decision. What She Built to Outlive Her

I fell for Dolly Parton the ordinary way first — the voice, the wit, the rhinestones daring you to underestimate her. That’s easy love. Most of the world has it.

But somewhere along the way I stopped watching the entertainer and started studying the person, and what I found underneath was a woman running what I’d call the Aliveness Test on herself every single day: not “am I successful,” but “am I still awake inside my own life.” She never stopped being curious. Never stopped being delighted by small things. That’s rarer than fame — rare enough that I put her on my own advisory board, the panel of thinkers I turn to in my head when I’m working something out. She belonged there.

The clearest proof of it is the mailbox. In 1995, because her own father couldn’t read and she’d watched what that cost him, she started mailing a free book to every child’s home in one Tennessee county, monthly, birth to age five. No form. No proof of need. Just a book, addressed by name, arriving like any other mail. By the time she was through, that had become one of the largest literacy efforts on earth — over 300 million books mailed worldwide.

That’s what I mean by an heirloom instead of an empire. An empire is what makes you rich while you’re alive to run it. An heirloom is what keeps running the promise after you’re gone — which is the only kind of legacy actually worth building. She never found what I call her Enough Line, that spot where a person decides they’ve done enough and lets the rest coast. She just kept going, through her husband’s death last year, through every hardship, still delighted, still building.

She never gets to see the letter one more child writes her twenty years from now, thanking her for a book that arrived at just the right moment. She built the machine anyway.

I never met her. I got to watch, for a good long while, and learn something true — enough of it that I gave her a permanent seat at the table in my own thinking, alongside the others I turn to for wisdom. Enthusiasm for life isn’t naive. Sustained across eighty years and every kind of hardship, it’s one of the most disciplined, generous things a person can offer.

Rest well. The mailbox is still full. You built it to stay that way.

Somewhere along the way, though, the folder became the scoreboard. Not because the folder demanded it, but because it’s easier to measure a folder than to measure a life. Numbers are legible. Lives are messy, ambiguous, hard to grade. So we default to the thing we can measure, and we call it success, and we keep score long after the game that mattered has ended.

The irony is that everyone secretly knows the folder isn’t the point. Ask anyone on their deathbed what they wish they’d optimized for, and you will not hear “I wish I’d checked my balance more often.” You’ll hear about people. About time. About the things they kept postponing because the folder felt more urgent.

So here’s the practical version of this idea, the version you can act on today: stop treating the measurable thing as the important thing just because it’s easier to measure. Pick one unmeasurable thing — a relationship, a piece of unfinished work, a call you’ve been avoiding — and give it the same urgency you give your quarterly numbers.

Blink - Again
Cole is nineteen now. I remember him at four, which is exactly how old Daisy is right now, which means Daisy’s four is already, somehow, already halfway to being a memory instead of a moment.

That’s the part that gets me about grandchildren — not that time passes, but how fast the specific versions of them disappear. Seven-year-old Zorra is not a rough draft of ten-year-old Zorra. She’s complete, right now, and she is temporary, right now, in a way nothing will warn you about in advance.

I spent thirty years as an engineer and twenty-five as a financial planner, two careers built on measuring things precisely. It took me far too long to apply that same precision to the one resource that actually can’t be replaced. Money recovers. A bad year gets followed by a better one. There’s no such recovery for a missed Tuesday with a four-year-old. That hour just closes, permanently, whether or not you noticed it happening.

There is a version of a life that runs like fenced pasture — every acre accounted for, every boundary explained by something that happened before you were old enough to ask. You walk it your whole time and call the walking freedom because you’ve never seen the alternative.

Then someone — a child, usually, because children haven’t learned yet to stop asking obvious questions — stands at the rail and says why is this here.

Here’s the thing about compounding: it’s boring while it’s happening.

Nobody gets excited about entry #4,382 in the gratitude journal. Nobody applauds the coin dropping into the coffee can for the six-thousandth time. There’s no launch, no press release, no dopamine hit engineered to keep you coming back. The whole mechanism runs on the willingness to keep doing the unremarkable thing long after it stopped feeling remarkable — which, honestly, is most of the time.

This is why so few people actually do it, even though almost everyone agrees, in theory, that it works. It’s not a knowledge problem. Nobody’s confused about whether gratitude helps. It’s a boredom problem. The deposit is small, invisible, and undramatic, and we’ve built an entire culture optimized for the opposite of small, invisible, and undramatic.

The people who build real reserves of hope aren’t smarter than the rest of us. They’ve just made peace with the boredom. The View From Seven Generations Out

The Haudenosaunee principle of seven-generation thinking asks a question most of us never think to ask about our own decisions: how will this look two hundred years from now? Not next quarter. Not next election. Two centuries.

I find this principle inseparable from real optimism, because you cannot plan two hundred years out unless you genuinely believe there will be someone standing there to benefit from the plan. Pessimism has a short time horizon by nature — it’s hard to worry convincingly about a distant future you don’t believe is coming. Optimism is what makes long-range planning possible at all. You cannot plant an oak tree you’re certain will never be seen.

My ancestor Michael Hillegas, the first Treasurer of the United States, was operating on exactly this kind of horizon — building financial infrastructure for a country that, in 1789, had every reasonable chance of failing within a decade. The optimism required to build a functioning treasury for a nation nobody was sure would survive its own experiment is almost unimaginable to me now, and yet it’s the same species of optimism I ask my clients to practice at a much smaller scale: build the structure as if the person you love will still be standing in it seventy years from now, even though you can’t prove it.

Peter Diamandis’s optimism is usually discussed in the language of decades — exponential technologies, the next thirty years of abundance. But I think the same evidence-based hopefulness scales up to two hundred years without much strain. If the data says the trajectory bends toward more, not less — more health, more knowledge, more capacity to solve hard problems — then there’s no reason that trajectory stops mattering after year thirty. It’s the same argument, just given more room to compound.

This is where financial planning and 200-year thinking actually meet, in my experience. A trust structured to benefit great-grandchildren not yet born is, functionally, an optimism instrument. It only makes sense if you believe the family, the country, the species will still be around to use it. Every long-term financial plan I’ve built has this hidden assumption buried in its foundation: that the future is worth building for, patiently, past the point where you’ll personally see the result.

I think about my seven grandchildren and what a two-hundred-year view of their lives would even look like. I won’t see most of it. Neither will they, honestly — two hundred years is longer than any single life. But that’s rather the point. The oak isn’t for the person who plants it.

Optimism, at this scale, stops being a personality trait and becomes something closer to an inheritance practice. You don’t do it because you expect to see the payoff. You do it because you’ve decided the payoff is real enough to be worth building toward, whether or not you’re there to watch it arrive.
