length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

"The same boiling water hardens the egg and softens the potato."

I've heard that quote more times than I can count.

People usually use it to talk about strength.

Be the egg.

Be the potato.

Be stronger.

Be softer.

But I think we've been looking at the wrong part of the story.

The egg isn't the lesson.

The potato isn't the lesson.

The water is.

Because the water never changed.

The heat remained the same.

Yet the outcome was completely different.

And maybe that's why comparison has never made sense to me.

We compare our grief to someone else's grief.

Our healing to someone else's healing.

Our failures to someone else's failures.

We look at people who walked through the same storm and wonder why they seem stronger while we're still trying to put ourselves back together.

But were we ever carrying the same things?

Two people can lose the same opportunity.

One becomes more determined.

The other loses confidence.

Two people can experience the same heartbreak.

One learns how to love more gently.

The other builds walls so high that no one can enter again.

The situation is the same.

The lesson isn't.

Sometimes, the same experience creates a person who becomes more compassionate because they know what suffering feels like.

Sometimes, it creates a person who becomes distant because suffering taught them that getting close only leads to pain.

And perhaps that's because we never enter difficult situations as empty people.

We carry things into them.

Memories.

Expectations.

Dreams.

Disappointments.

The versions of ourselves that existed before everything changed.

Maybe that's why one person becomes humble while another becomes bitter.

Not because one is stronger.

Not because one is weaker.

But because every person arrives carrying a different story.

And I think that's something we forget.

We judge people for becoming too quiet.

Too cold.

Too emotional.

Too guarded.

Yet we rarely ask what they had to survive before they stepped into the same boiling water.

Maybe pain doesn't simply change us.

Maybe it reveals the invisible things we've been carrying all along.

So perhaps we should stop comparing our journeys.

Stop measuring our healing against someone else's timeline.

Stop believing that we're failing because someone else handled the same situation differently.

Life isn't a race.

Pain isn't a competition.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" voice.

Someone else is defending themselves.

Blame moves from one person to another. The room fills with disappointment.

Then a door closes.

Time passes.

Dinner is served.

The television is turned on.People continue talking.

And nobody mentions what happened.

You sit there wondering whether you imagined it.

You didn't.

You just learned one of the unwritten rules of the house.

Don't talk about it.

Pretend.

Smile.

Move on.

The hardest part wasn't the fire.

It was pretending that it never happened.

Because in some homes, silence isn't the absence of sound.

It's a survival strategy.

The Hallway

Some children learn to recognize love through affection.

Others learn to recognize danger through footsteps.

You begin listening carefully.

Not because you're curious.

Because you're preparing yourself.

You learn to recognize different versions of silence.

You learn the meaning behind different tones of voice.

You learn to observe faces.

You learn to predict storms before they arrive.

People call you mature.

They admire how responsible you are.

But they don't understand something.

You didn't become mature.

You became watchful.

There's a difference.

The Bedroom

Children are supposed to dream.

They're supposed to make mistakes.

They're supposed to discover who they are.

But some children become peacemakers instead.

Before I understood myself, I became responsible.

Before I learned what I wanted, I learned what everyone else needed.

I became the listener.

The mediator.

The emotional regulator.

I thought I was keeping the peace.

I didn't realize I was disappearing.

The Room Nobody Sees

I loved people deeply.

So deeply that I would have given them everything.

Maybe I already did.

All I wanted in return was something so small that it almost hurts to say it out loud.

I wanted to be noticed.

Not admired.

Not praised.

Just noticed.

I wanted someone to look at me and say, "I see how hard you're trying.”

But that moment never came.

So I kept giving.

And giving.

And giving.

Until I had nothing left for myself.

I spent so many years trying to become enough for everyone else that I never stopped to ask whether I was enough for myself.

My self-esteem slowly disappeared.

Overthinking became a nightly habit.Tears became familiar.

And I started to believe that I was the problem.

I started to dislike the person I had become.

The Mirror

One day, I was cleaning a mirror.

Nothing extraordinary happened.I simply looked up.

And I froze.

I looked into my own eyes.

And I remembered someone.

A happier version of myself.

Someone who laughed more.

Someone who trusted more.

Someone I hadn't seen in years.

And suddenly, I realized something terrifying. The person looking back at me felt like a stranger.

I knew everyone's pain.

Everyone's anger.

Everyone's moods.

But I didn't know myself anymore.

Somewhere between surviving and growing up, I lost myself.

Survival had become my personality.

The Quote That Stayed With Me:

One day, I read a sentence.

“The love you keep giving to other people may be the love you needed for yourself .”

I read it again.

And then again.

Because something inside me recognized it immediately.

For years, I had spent my life giving away the very thing I was desperately searching for.

Love.

Patience.

Compassion.

Understanding.

I gave those things to everyone except myself.

And for the first time, I asked myself a different question.

What if I deserved that kindness too?

The Window

If you've recognized yourself in these rooms, stay a little longer.

I want to tell you something I wish someone had told me.

You're doing better than you think.

Slow down.

It's okay to make mistakes.

You don't have to earn love.

You don't have to carry everyone's pain.

And you don't have to keep proving that you're strong.

If you grew up in a burnt house, you probably became many things.

Responsible.

Independent.

Strong.

But I wonder how many of those things you chose and how many were chosen for you.

Maybe that's why you're tired.

Maybe that's why you apologize so much.

Maybe that's why being alone sometimes feels safer than being hurt again.

And if that's true, I want you to know something.

I see you.

I don't have all the answers.

But I see you.

And if you ever need to sit beside someone who understands the smell of smoke, the window will always remain open.

<div No tragedy that divided my life into a "before" and an "after."

It happened slowly.

The way a favorite shirt loses its color after being washed too many times. The way footsteps erase themselves on a road walked every day.

One morning I woke up and realized...

I wasn't chasing my dreams anymore.

I was only surviving long enough to reach tomorrow.

Sometimes I imagine sitting across from the person I used to be.

The younger version of me.

The one who believed every sunrise meant another chance. moment when someone stops expecting tomorrow to be different.

It's invisible.

You still smile.

You still answer messages.

You still laugh when everyone else laughs.

You still say,

"I'm fine."

But inside...

you're no longer building a future.

You're just surviving another day.

The strange thing about exhaustion is that it doesn't always look like sadness.

Sometimes it looks like indifference.

You stop dreaming because dreaming hurts.

You stop planning because disappointment has become familiar.

You stop asking for more because you've learned not to expect it.

People think you've become lazy.

But the truth is...

you've simply carried disappointment for so long that even hope feels heavy.

If my younger self looked at me today,

I don't think they would be angry.

I think they would be confused.

"When did we stop believing?"

I don't know.

Maybe after too many closed doors.

Maybe after too many unanswered prayers.

Maybe after watching everyone else move forward while I remained standing in the same place, convincing myself that waiting was another form of progress.

Or maybe...

hope doesn't disappear all at once.

Maybe it leaves the way daylight leaves the sky.

So slowly that you only realize it's night when you can no longer see your own hands.

For a long time I thought I was mourning my dreams.

I wasn't.

I was mourning myself.

The version of me who believed that every light in the distance meant something beautiful was waiting.

The version who thought kindness would always be rewarded.

The version who believed hard work would eventually be enough.

I miss that person.

Not because they were naive.

But because they were alive in a way I no longer know how to be.

Maybe that's why this hurts so much.

Not because life became difficult.

Life has always been difficult.

It hurts because somewhere between surviving and waiting...

I forgot how to hope without fear.

If you're reading this and quietly thinking,

"This is me."

Then I want you to know something.

You are not strange for feeling lost.

You are not weak because you're exhausted.

Sometimes the strongest people aren't the ones who keep smiling.

They're the ones who carried hope for years before their hands finally became too tired to hold it.

And if today all you can do is breathe...

then let breathing be enough.

Not because it solves everything.

But because every life has seasons that cannot be rushed.

Perhaps this isn't the end of your story.

Perhaps it's simply the chapter where you stop pretending you're okay.

And maybe that's where healing begins—

not with finding all the answers,

but with finally admitting,

"I'm tired."

Sometimes, the most human thing we can do is tell the truth about our weariness.

And perhaps, one quiet day in the future,

you'll notice a small light again.

Not because someone promised it would be there.

But because, against everything you've lived through,

your heart chose to look up once more.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Strong enough to finish my psychology degree, strong enough to build something of my own, strong enough that no one's permission would decide what I could or couldn't do. I told myself that once I got there, most of the worry would just stop — I'd go back to being the version of me that used to sketch in the margins of notebooks, write for no reason at all, paint without needing one either.

Then adulthood happened. Not all at once— just slowly, through deadlines and academic pressure and the belief that if I could just understand everything, I'd finally have life figured out. I got so busy holding it together that I forgot I used to be a creative person at all.

And here's the part I didn't expect: I did get stronger. I did become more independent. It made me happy — genuinely, gratefully happy. But it didn't stop there. The moment I arrived, there was already a next thing waiting.

I used to think that meant happiness was moving away from me again. Now I think it just means Allah keeps giving me more to hold, more to grow into. Gratitude, not disappointment, is what that deserves.

The Promise of One Day

Somewhere along the way, I started making myself a quiet promise: I'll finally breathe once the degree is done. Once the business is real. Once I don't need anyone's permission for the life I'm building.

It didn't feel like a trap. It felt like motivation. Something to aim at on the hard days.

But I finished parts of it. I did get stronger, more independent — and "one day" didn't arrive and stay. It arrived, I felt it, and then it quietly turned into the next "one day." Another goal already waiting where the last one used to stand.

I used to think that meant I'd been chasing the wrong thing. Now I think it just means growth doesn't end — and somewhere in all that chasing, I stopped sketching. Stopped writing without a reason. Stopped painting just because. I was so busy becoming strong that I forgot to notice I already had a self worth returning to.

Why the Finish Line Keeps Moving

The strange part is, I never noticed I was doing it.

I'd tell myself: once this is done, I'll finally feel steady. And for a while, I did. There's real excitement in arriving somewhere you worked hard to reach — finishing a hard semester, feeling a little more independent than you were last year.

But I'm good at adapting, maybe too good. What once felt like a huge win quietly turns into just... normal. The goal that used to keep me up at night becomes part of an ordinary week, and before I notice, I'm already fixed on the next one — a better grade, a stronger version of myself, one more thing to prove I can stand on my own.

There's nothing wrong with wanting more. Ambition isn't the problem — it's what gave me direction when everything else felt uncertain.

The problem is only when I start believing peace is waiting on the other side of the next achievement. Because if I keep placing it in the future, the present never gets to count.

And somewhere in all that reaching forward, I stopped noticing the sketchbook sitting closed on my desk.

Coming Home to the Present

I used to think happiness was on the other side of finishing the degree, of the business becoming real, of finally being independent enough that no one's permission stood between me and my own life. And when I got pieces of that, I was happy — genuinely, gratefully happy. It just didn't stay put. There was always a next thing waiting where the last one used to be.

Marcus Aurelius wrote that very little is needed for a happy life, because it's already within you. I believe that more than I used to. Not because the chasing stops — I don't think it does — but because somewhere in all that reaching forward, I picked the pencil back up. Nothing finished. Nothing worth showing anyone. Just proof that the person who used to sketch in notebook margins was still in there, waiting for me to come back to her.

Maybe that's what Oppenheim meant — growing happiness under your feet instead of chasing it into the distance. Not that you stop moving. Just that you notice what's already growing while you walk.

I still don't know exactly where the degree, the business, or the life I'm building is heading. But I've stopped needing to arrive before I let myself feel grateful for it. That part, I leave to Allah.

The rest, I'm learning to notice as it happens — not after.

<a Maria Rilke.

Somewhere along the way, many of us begin to believe that life is a project of self-improvement. We tell ourselves that if we work a little harder, make fewer mistakes, and fix every flaw, we will finally become the person we are supposed to be.

Perfect.

But what if that version of ourselves does not exist?

What if perfection is not a destination waiting for us at the end of the road, but a mirage that keeps moving farther away the closer we get?

I have spent countless moments wishing I were more confident, more certain, more complete. Yet when I look back, the parts of my life that shaped me most were not the moments when everything went right. They were the moments of confusion, failure, and struggle. The moments that forced me to grow.

Maybe the greatest mistake we make is believing that our imperfections are obstacles to life, when in reality they are part of what makes life meaningful.

What Struggle Teaches Us :

Struggle is often treated as something to avoid, something that stands in the way of a good life. We wish for easier days, smoother paths, and fewer obstacles. Yet when I think about the lessons that have stayed with me, most of them came from moments I would never have chosen for myself.

Struggle teaches patience when things do not happen as quickly as we hoped. It teaches resilience when plans fall apart. It teaches humility when we realize we do not have all the answers.

There is something powerful about not knowing. About trying, failing, and trying again. Every mistake leaves behind a lesson. Every setback reveals a strength we did not know we had.

As the author Ernest Hemingway once wrote:

“The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places.”

Perhaps growth does not happen despite our struggles. Perhaps it happens because of them.

If life were free of challenges, what would we learn? Without uncertainty, there would be no courage. Without failure, there would be no resilience. Without struggle, there would be little reason to grow.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" thought one answer would change everything.

I thought if I could finally figure out who I was, what I wanted, or where I was supposed to be going, the confusion would disappear. Life would suddenly make sense. I would wake up with certainty instead of questions.

So I kept searching.

I searched in books, in late-night thoughts, in conversations, and in the quiet moments when everyone else seemed to have their lives figured out. Every time I found a new idea, I hoped it would be the answer I had been waiting for.

But the feeling never lasted.

A few days later, the questions always returned.

Who am I?

What am I supposed to become?

Why does everyone else seem to be moving forward while I feel stuck in the same place?

For a long time, I believed my problem was that I hadn't found the right answer yet. Now I wonder if the real problem was believing that a single answer could change everything.

Maybe that's why this question has followed me for so long.

Not because it is impossible to answer, but because it keeps changing as I do.

The person who asked "Who am I?" at fifteen is not the same person asking it today. My fears have changed. My hopes have changed. Even the things I thought mattered most have shifted with time.

Yet the question remains.

For a while, I treated that as a failure. I thought growth meant arriving at a final version of myself—a complete understanding of who I was and where I belonged. I imagined that one day the uncertainty would disappear and I would finally feel settled.

But life doesn't seem to work that way.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know. Every answer opens the door to another question. Every certainty eventually meets a new challenge.

Maybe identity is not something we discover once and keep forever.

Maybe it is something we build, lose, rebuild, and redefine throughout our lives.

And maybe that isn't a tragedy.

Maybe that's what it means to be human.

The question still follows me.

It appears in quiet moments, in new beginnings, and in the spaces between who I was and who I am becoming. But it no longer feels like an enemy demanding an answer.

It feels more like a companion, reminding me that there is still room to grow, still room to learn, and still room to become someone I cannot yet imagine.

I still don't know exactly who I am.

The truth is, I may never find the perfect answer I spent so long searching for. Life isn't a puzzle that can be solved once and for all. It keeps changing, and so do we.

But perhaps that isn't something to fear.

Perhaps the goal was never to arrive at a final version of myself. Perhaps the goal was simply to keep growing, keep questioning, and keep moving forward even when the path isn't clear.

The question still follows me.

But it no longer feels like a burden I have to carry alone. It feels like a reminder that I am still becoming.

And for now, that is enough.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img"
