It's one of those nights with open windows, but no breeze. Trying to fall asleep, but trains pass, and the crickets sing.

The sound feels like a scratch in the back of the throat.

An insistence. Just like the buzz of thoughts in her own mind, fighting for attention.

The window is open, but nothing comes in except sounds. Voices chattering, doors closing, cars racing. Then crickets.

And no, these weren't the crickets of an awkward silence. It felt more like a quiet reassurance, like an "I'm always here with you."

Bells ring and airplanes knife the air, the wind curls and screams back until it stops.

Summer nights land differently after days of heat and blinding sunlight.

It was supposed to be the season of vacation. Of hakuna matata, no worries in the world. But too much sunlight strains the eyes, almost like a forced smile. Maybe this is what people mean by toxic positivity.

So she learned to appreciate the rain. Wait for it. Expect it. Singing and dancing in the rain felt too much like a romantic trope, a stereotype. Yet she couldn't brush off the liberating feeling of running through it, getting all soaked, washed up from above. Like a relief that comes from shedding tears in the shower.

The crickets again. Or was it her own tinnitus? That background hum in her ears was maybe reminding her again: "I'm always here with you."

The bell strikes the hour again, how much time has passed? It's midnight.

Another plane, another train, another car. Another cough.

The sounds move briefly and then stop, but the ringing does not.

The windows remain open. So do her eyes.

Living in the stretch between two golden hours.

Some seasons don’t just arrive — they speak. This is a small autumn story about silence, warmth, and the bittersweet beauty of letting go.

She could hear the hum of distant traffic—the speeding wheels on wet asphalt.
Or was it the rustle of leaves in the wind?

Just listening to it evoked so many other rings: rain falling, fire crackling, white noise, waterfalls.

She loved autumn. Because she could hear the silence again.

And no, silence did not mean the absence of sound. Silence meant she could hear all those sounds again. It was like a soft static that makes silence audible.

It was paradoxical, and maybe that’s why she loved it. She was like that too—the melancholic in the corner and the funky dancer on the floor.

She guessed most of us were like that, once the labels fell away. We carried both the weight and the lightness of being, and had to uncover them again and again.

Like the tree outside shedding its leaves, we had so many hues and layers to release.

Autumn is the season when we bundle up, and yet our souls yearn to be bare again.
It’s not only the season of dressing, but also of shedding—quietly, like the trees.

Each leaf felt like a fallen tear.

She wrapped her hands tighter around the mug, feeling its warmth seep into her palms, breathing in the rising steam. She knew all about this—the importance of hygge, of comfort, of warm blankets and slow food.

Positive psychology had explained it all.
But she didn’t savor this moment to be happy.
Science explains; autumn makes you feel.

Knowing something and feeling it were different. You could rehearse feelings endlessly, like we do on social media, and still miss them entirely.

She lifted her mug again and really looked at it—her daily silent companion, so easily forgotten. The way its rounded grip fit snugly into her hand. The tiny imperfections in its glazed surface.

She pressed it closer to her chest, the way she held a book after finishing it, reluctant to let go.

Farewell, whispered the autumn.

That’s why the season felt like an embrace—cozy yet tinged with longing. Like a presence that aches because it knows it must pass.

Like love.

Like life.
