But I do remember how much better I felt when I got dressed.

Not dressed-dressed. I wasn’t putting on a cute outfit to sit on the couch cluster feeding with leaking boobs and a baby attached to me. But putting on something that felt like me made a difference.

Postpartum is such a weird time for clothes. Your body has changed overnight; nothing fits quite how you remember it fitting; your boobs have entered a postcode of their own, and you’re dressing for a life you’ve never actually lived before.

After my last baby, I realised I didn’t need a whole new wardrobe. I didn’t need to go shopping every time I felt shit about my clothes. And I definitely didn’t need to be standing in front of my wardrobe at 8am after being awake six times overnight trying to put together an outfit.

I needed a uniform.

Something I could put on without thinking. Something comfortable enough for feeding, cuddling, walking, sitting on the floor and doing absolutely nothing. But most importantly, something that still made me feel nice, like I had actually put in some effort.

Sometimes putting on an outfit you actually like, adding a pair of sunglasses and leaving the house for a coffee can make you feel 10% more human.

CREATE YOUR POSTPARTUM UNIFORM

This is what I did last time, and I’ll be doing it again for my third baby this December.

Buy a clothing rack and put it somewhere in your bedroom.

Before the baby arrives - or whenever you have the capacity - create five outfits.

Five outfits that are comfortable, easy, work for your current body and make you feel good. Hang them on the rack, ready to go.

The trick is to make sure the pieces work together too (I can help you with this). The top from outfit one should be able to work with the pants from outfit three. The shirt from outfit four can be thrown over outfit two.

We’re basically creating a tiny wardrobe within your wardrobe.

You wake up. You’re tired. You don’t want to think about clothes.

You look at the rack. Pick an outfit. Done.

WHAT MY FIVE OUTFITS MIGHT LOOK LIKE

OUTFIT ONE - THE WALK

Relaxed track pants + fitted tank + oversized shirt + sneakers

Comfortable enough to basically be pyjamas, but you still feel put together enough to walk to get a coffee or have someone pop over.

OUTFIT TWO - THE EASY SET

Matching set + sandal

Matching sets are SUCH a cheat code because they require absolutely no thought but somehow always look intentional. Wear together or split them up and mix them through the other outfits.

OUTFIT THREE - THE JEAN

Relaxed jean + oversized tee + ballet flat + fun accessory

For the day you want to feel slightly more like your pre-baby self. The jean needs to fit your body now. I do not care what the tag says. We’re not squeezing ourselves into anything four weeks postpartum.

OUTFIT FOUR - THE THROW ON

Loose dress + sneaker/sandal + cap + big sunglasses

One piece. No matching required. Excellent.

If you’re breastfeeding, obviously make sure it’s something you can easily feed in - buttons, stretch, zip, whatever works for you.

OUTFIT FIVE - THE LEGGING BUT MAKE IT AN OUTFIT

Legging + oversized shirt/tee + sneaker + statement sunglasses

Because obviously leggings are going to be involved.

The difference is we’re making them part of an outfit rather than putting them on because they’re the only clean thing we can find

And then you mix and match

Swap the shoes. Throw the oversized shirt over the matching set. Wear the tank with the jeans. Add a cap. Add a necklace. Add a stupidly oversized pair of sunglasses when you’ve slept for approximately 14 minutes.

Five outfits can very quickly become ten.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PART

Please don’t build this wardrobe for the body you think you’re going to have. Build it for the body you have. You have just grown and birthed an entire human. You do not need a pair of pre-pregnancy jeans hanging on your rack every morning reminding you that they don’t fit yet.

Buy the bigger size. Wear the stretchy pants. Let your boobs dictate the neckline. Comfort is the priority. But comfort doesn’t have to mean losing your style. That’s the whole point of the uniform. It’s not about looking perfectly put together during postpartum. It’s about taking away some of the mental load.

Your clothes are sitting there waiting for you. You know they fit. You know they’re comfortable. You know you feel good in them. Grab one. Put it on. Add your favourite sunnies. And start your day

You have enough other shit to think about.

She was never someone who just put on a pair of earrings and left the house. She was decked out. Rings on multiple fingers, stacks of bangles and bracelets, necklaces - usually all at once. More was more. My best friends actually remember her literally not letting them leave the house without earrings; she would take them to her room and give them some of her earrings to wear.

Dad recently gave me her old jewellery box, which is actually less of a jewellery box and more of a tall, skinny chest of drawers; in it there were pieces she collected over the years. Some special, some probably worth absolutely nothing, but all very her.

Since I’ve had the idea of starting the rental side of Rattle (I have only just started talking about it here, and it will be a slow process because $$ but that is my plan!), I’ve been trying to work out what I actually want it to be. I don’t want to just buy things for the sake of having lots of stock. I want it to feel like a really special, curated shared wardrobe of pieces that completely change an outfit.

And I think I’m going to start with jewellery.

Statement pieces that you probably wouldn’t justify buying for yourself, but would LOVE to wear for a wedding, birthday, event or even just when an outfit needs something extra.

The kind of earrings, necklaces, cuffs and bangles that are the outfit.

And I love that, in a very small way, it feels like an extension of Mum’s jewellery box.

THE JEWELLERY LIST

Cleopatra’s Bling - My no.1 absolute FAVOURITE jewellery brand. I wear my pearl necklace almost every day and have my eyes on a second necklace that I think would be perfect with a LBD. Their pieces feel really special and unique, but are still so wearable - the kind of jewellery you can keep forever and somehow wear with everything.

Vivienne Westwood - I love that Vivienne Westwood feels classic but still makes a statement. Nothing is too simple or boring. If you're going to a wedding, a 40th or somewhere you want to feel a little more dressed up, one of these pieces could completely elevate a simple outfit and make it feel chic and put together.

Dries Van Noten - I LOVE the colour in this jewellery collection. It's filled with interesting shapes, textures and unexpected colour combinations. From the rings to the necklaces, you really only need one piece to completely change an outfit. Exactly the kind of jewellery I want in the rental collection - special enough that you might not buy it for yourself, but SO fun to borrow for an event.

Jacquemus - Much like their clothing, the jewellery is always a little different. Interesting shapes, oversized pieces and things I haven't really seen anywhere else. It feels playful without being too novelty, which I LOVE. Although it's also going to be very hard for me to go past their bags when I'm shopping for the rental collection...

Dinosaur Designs - I love all of their pieces, but OMG the bracelet stacks. Stacked all the way up your arm - absolutely to die for. I love the idea of mixing different colours, shapes and sizes together and making the jewellery the main event. Very Mum actually - she would have LOVED these stacks.

Julietta - SO many colourful options and I actually think I might start the collection here. Fun, chunky, stackable and exactly the kind of pieces I picture people borrowing to make a simple outfit feel completely different. I want basically all of it.

And now I want MORE. If there is a jewellery brand you think I need to know about, send it my way. Australian, international, tiny Instagram brands, vintage dealers - I want all of it.

Especially anything that makes you think: I would LOVE to wear that, but I probably wouldn’t buy it for myself.

I just had the biggest cry in the shower. It was so, so needed.

We have had some really hard weeks with Mum, and what I find so fucking frustrating is that no one can tell us what is happening. Early-onset dementia is so different for everyone. Mum was diagnosed maybe around seven years ago and has been in a home since last October. Her decline has been rapid, and I have a lot of guilt that I can’t be the one looking after her full time, but it became too hard and unsafe for any of us.

Maybe what I’m feeling is a complete lack of control, but I just wish someone could give me a timeline. It feels like we are just waiting and unsure what is actually going on.

Selfishly - and this does feel so selfish - I am nervous about the timing of her death.

That sounds absolutely fucked.

I am 22 weeks pregnant. I am so aware of PPD and postpartum anxiety, and I just feel like my pregnancy and postpartum hormones won’t cope with losing her.

Although even typing that, I know they will. I know I can and will have to get through it at whatever stage it happens. There is never going to be a right time.

I really just don’t want her gone.

She can hardly open her eyes at the moment. She doesn’t recognise me. She doesn’t talk much. So why am I so scared to lose her body?

It isn’t fair on her to be living like this. But there is something about her not being physically here that I can’t wrap my head around.

One side of me feels lucky that I can still hug her, but on the other hand, I know it makes it hard for her and for our family that we are confronted with this on a daily basis.

I think about her constantly, and I know I always will.

I have learnt so much about myself and grief in the past year. It almost felt like we were losing her when we put her into the home. I have never experienced that level of stress.

I know people go through grief every day, and there are so many different types of it. I feel so lucky to have had such an incredible mum, even if it was only really for 27-ish years.

She was literally the best person to ever exist, and if I can be anything like her, I would be proud.

She was carefree, selfless and hilarious. She wore her heart on her sleeve. She was the most caring person I have ever met. She is irreplaceable.

I loved the way she lived her life. She seemed to never be stressed - she probably was, but maybe she just never showed it to us as kids?

She was ALWAYS having fun.

I’m talking, she had fun every single day.

She loved a Sav Blanc and lived her days in the best way. No plans, yet always busy.

One fucked up thing about this horrible disease is that it blurs my memories of her. I’m starting to remember her as the person she is now and forget some of the nice memories of who she was before all of this.

I’m actually going to ask all of her friends to message me their favourite memories of her. I love hearing what she was like through their eyes - as a friend, as a mum, or even what she was like when she was my age. I want to remember all of those versions of her.

She was also the best mum. I have lived my whole life knowing, and genuinely feeling, that she would do absolutely anything for us.

She was the kind of mum who was almost arrogant about her kids. She thought we were the best, and she was always on our side. We could go to her with absolutely anything and know that, no matter what we had done, she would help us through it.

She could also be scary (lol), and she definitely got mad at us. But at the end of the day, she was still there, figuring it out with us. There was nothing we could do that would make her turn her back on us.

I think having that kind of unconditional support your entire life gives you a confidence you don’t even realise you have. I have always known that Mum was in my corner, no matter what. And I don’t think I will ever be able to properly explain how lucky that makes me feel.

I can completely understand how people can fall into a dark hole after losing someone they love. I really hope that after my initial grief, I can live my life in a way that Mum would love.

I want to live my life for her. I want to do things I would never have dreamed of doing and achieve things I never thought I could.

This has given me such a different sense of perspective and shown me how short life can truly be - unfortunately, with a healthy dose of health anxiety thrown in too.

But more than anything, I want to live my life the way Mum did.

Having fun every day and making the most of every week.

I’m not really sure what I’m trying to achieve with this article. Nothing, really. It’s just a diary entry for me.

I also want to say that I know things could be worse. I know there are people dealing with things far heavier than this, and I am incredibly grateful for the life I have.

I wrote most of this this morning when I was in a pretty shitty headspace. It was just one of those bad mornings where everything felt harder than usual and I am just so beyond tired. Since then, I’ve gone for a long walk, spent time with my family and I feel completely different. Lighter, happier and really grateful for my life.

I think that’s part of why I want to write about this stuff. I can feel completely heartbroken about Mum and still feel incredibly lucky. I can have a really bad morning and a really nice afternoon.

If you can relate to any of this, I am so sorry. I’m always here to chat - I actually love talking to other people going through similar experiences. There is something really comforting about talking to someone who gets it.

Now I think about it, I was probably just naive.

I wasn’t constantly thinking about every possible outcome because I simply didn’t know enough to. I wasn’t aware of all the things that could happen, and truly thought I would be pushing this baby out and going straight to shopping at Chaddy.

Now, with two healthy boys and another little one on the way, I carry a lot more knowledge. And while knowledge can be empowering, it can also bring worry.

So this list isn’t about things I wish I’d done differently. It’s about the little lessons experience has taught me along the way.

1. Every pregnancy is different.

One of the biggest surprises this time around has been just how different this pregnancy has felt.

Before I fell pregnant, I assumed I’d know exactly what to expect. I’d done it twice before.

Instead, this pregnancy has constantly reminded me that no two experiences are the same.

The symptoms have been different. My energy has been different. Even my emotions have been different. I AM SO TIRED!!!!!

I'm trying to stop comparing this pregnancy to my first two because, when I really think about it, I'm a completely different person than I was back then.

The sooner you let go of what you think pregnancy should look like, the easier it becomes to appreciate the one you’re actually living - I am not there yet, so I need to listen to myself here.

2. Dress the body you have today.

This lesson has been one of the hardest for me.

I started this pregnancy in a very different body to my first two. Also very, very different fitness level :/.

The last few years have held a lot of stress with Mum’s dementia, and I know my body has carried some of that. I’d already gained weight before I fell pregnant, so I wasn’t starting from the same place I had before.

It wasn’t just that my body was changing because of pregnancy; it already felt unfamiliar.

As a personal stylist, I know that clothes are meant to fit you, not the other way around.

But knowing something and living it are two very different things.

I’ve had to practise what I’ve spent years telling my clients: pack away the clothes that don’t fit right now, stop trying to squeeze into a previous version of yourself, and dress the body you have today.

Not because you’ve given up.

Because you deserve to feel comfortable and confident in this season too.

3. You can love being pregnant and still find it really hard.

This pregnancy has been the hardest of the three.

Life looks so different now.

I’m growing a baby while raising two little boys, trying to grow a business, be a good mum, wife, friend & daughter, and trying to look after myself (wow we really are expected to do it all aren’t we?!)

Most days I am completely exhausted. Counting down the minutes until bedtime. I also hate sounding so negative and ungrateful, but this is reality at the moment - I am not enjoying it… even though I know I will miss it.

I think these feelings can exist side by side. (I hope haha).

I can feel incredibly lucky to be carrying this baby while also admitting that pregnancy is physically and emotionally demanding.

One feeling doesn’t cancel out the other.

If you’re finding pregnancy hard, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just living the reality of growing a human while still showing up for the rest of your life.

4. Let go of the guilt that comes with accepting help.

This has been one of the biggest shifts for me this pregnancy.

During my first pregnancy, I didn’t need as much help because I only really had myself to look after. Once the boys came along, though, I still found it so hard to ask for help. Somewhere along the way, I’d convinced myself that needing a break meant I wasn’t coping.

This time feels different.

I’ve realised I don’t get a gold medal for doing everything myself.

I’ve also stopped expecting Charlie to magically know what I need. He can’t read my mind. If I need half an hour to myself, I have to say it. If I’m overwhelmed, I tell him.

And WE DESERVE A BREAK!!

Yes, I know I’m yelling.

But seriously, we don’t have to earn rest. We don’t have to finish every load of washing, answer every email, or tick everything off the to-do list before we’re “allowed” to sit down.

Taking a break doesn’t make us lazy. Asking for help doesn’t make us incapable.

It makes us human.

And I’ve realised I’m a much better mum, wife and person when I let people help me instead of trying to carry everything on my own.

5. Close Google.

If there’s one thing I wish I’d done less of this pregnancy, it’s Googling.

The first time around, I was blissfully unaware of so many things. This time, I’ve experienced enough and read (watched TikToks) enough to know what could happen.

And while knowledge can be empowering, it can also send you down a rabbit hole at 10pm because your left eyebrow twitched twice.

This pregnancy has definitely come with more health anxiety than my first two (I will actually do a whole Substack on this because I could talk on it for hours). Every new symptom has me wondering if it’s “normal.”

Headache? Google and spiral.

Heart palpitations? Google and spiral.

Random ache? Definitely Google and spiral.

Google has never once made me feel better.

It’s usually taken a completely normal pregnancy symptom and convinced me I’m one of three recorded cases in medical history and I will in fact, die.

I am currently talking to a therapist about this :))))

Anywayyyy...

I really hope this didn’t come across as too deep or too negative.

I never want to sound like I’m complaining because I genuinely, truly love being a mum.

At the same time, I think it’s important to be honest. We can feel incredibly grateful while also admitting that pregnancy and motherhood can be really hard some days.

I also think the internet doesn’t need to be all sunshine and rainbows, but it doesn’t need to be all doom and gloom either. It is important to have both.

Instead of shopping, I’ve been adding everything to my wishlist. So rather than gatekeeping, I thought I’d share exactly what I’m currently saving for. Consider this a little peek inside my brain (and my saved folder).

First up is this Studio Fredie bag. SO cute. I can already picture it with a really simple outfit: an oversized crisp white tee, linen pants and some chunky sandals. It’s one of those accessories that does all the work and makes even the most basic outfit feel considered.

This Fruity Booty wrap scarf... I’ll be buying this the minute my spending ban is over. Some people would say it’s a lot of money for a piece of fabric. I would say it’s a styling masterpiece.

Throw it over a white tee, wear it as a top, tie it around your waist over jeans, or even wrap it around the handle of a bag. The cost-per-wear on something this versatile is going to be very easy to justify (or at least that’s what I’m telling myself).

This Blanca mini dress is one of those pieces that earns its place in your wardrobe. I picture it as the dress you throw on without thinking, the one you reach for on the mornings when you have no idea what to wear but still want to look put together.

It’s perfect for summer with sandals, but I’d wear it all through winter too, layered over a pair of jeans.

This Dhruv Kapoor shirt... or really, just anything Dhruv Kapoor. This brand has been living rent-free in my head for the past two years, and I think it's time I finally bite the bullet and buy something.

Speaking of brands that are permanently on my mind... I think I need this Sidres blouse.

These Marni sunglasses... all I can think of is cocktails on the beach. They're oversized, a little bit dramatic and just PERFECT.

And last but not least... a statement bangle.

My mum, who unfortunately has early-onset dementia and now lives in a nursing home, always had the most iconic wrist stack. Bangles, bracelets, watches... all mixed together in a way that somehow looked effortlessly cool. It’s one of the first things I think of when I think of her style.

As a little nod to Mum, I’d love to build my own collection over time. Starting with this one, because I just know she would have loved it.

So that’s where my money would be going if I wasn’t on this spending ban.

Will I still want all of these in three weeks? Hopefully because I am excited to shop !!

Until then, I’ll keep adding to the wishlist instead of the cart.

Welcome to the Rattle Style Substack.

I’m half excited and half laughing at myself because Substack is a writing app... and writing, English and grammar are probably the things I’m worst at in my entire life. 😂 But that isn’t really why we’re here.

We’re here so I can send you weekly shopping lists, introduce you to new brands I’ve found, put together outfit plans, and sprinkle in a bit of motherhood venting and conversation along the way.

It’s been a massive couple of years in my world. Truly the biggest and most life-changing two years of my life.

There has been so much transition and change. At times it felt like it was one thing after another. Some of it I shared online (my form of therapy 😂), and some of it I kept private.

Through all of it, Rattle has always been my constant.

This community has been my distraction, my creative outlet and the thing I’m most passionate about.

But I also can’t say it’s all been smooth sailing.

The juggle of work, mum life and my mum being sick really got me last year. Somewhere amongst trying to do everything, I feel like I lost myself a little.

I became so focused on trying to make Rattle financially sustainable that I leaned into the things I thought would make money. The problem was, the more I did that, the further away I felt from the reason I started Rattle in the first place.

And once I’ve settled into this new rhythm, I’m so excited to say that I’ll be bringing back personal styling clients!!

This is something I never wanted to let go of, but life got in the way and I felt like I couldn’t give my clients what they deserved.

Now I finally feel ready.

I also have to touch on social media because... wow.

It really is a whirlwind.

I still love creating content and I’ll continue working with brands I genuinely believe in, but lately I’ve found myself getting caught up in the analytics, feeling like I have to post every single day just to keep up.

It started feeling less creative and more like a race, and I felt like my audience could see that. I’ve felt a big energy shift recently, so I’m back to being me (hopefully).

AND if all of that wasn’t enough, I’m also pregnant with baby number three. 😂

Gussy is at kinder for 16 hours a week, I’ve got Otis with me full-time, and I’m trying to build Rattle and this community up alongside all of that.

Maybe I’m biting off more than I can chew...

But let’s give it a crack and see where the rest of the year takes us.
