Every Tuesday I run every US sector through the first two gates and publish the result, pass or fail.

Gate 1, Trend. The six-month structure. Above +5% it clears, below −5% it fails, and the middle is borderline.

Gate 2, Momentum. The last month. Above +2% clears, below −2% fails.

The thresholds are published so you can check the verdicts rather than take them. A board nobody can check is an opinion with a table around it.

Gate 3, Risk, is not on this board. It’s a sizing gate and it runs per position rather than per sector, so it gets its own section at the bottom.

The same three gates run on every trade I take, and every one of those ends up on a public record with its entry, stop, exit and result. 87 closed so far, 40 of them losers.

Twelve sectors, two gates. The verdict column is the whole letter.

Every percentage on that card is a move in the sector ETF. None of it is a return on my account.

The one that teaches it

Look at the top of the “one gate short” list.

Semiconductors are up 40.47% over six months. That’s the strongest trend on the entire board, by a distance. Technology is second at 34.63% and nothing else is close.

And over the last month they’ve done −0.16%. Nothing. Flat.

So the sector with the best structure on the board is the one that’s stopped moving.

If you only ran Gate 1 this morning you’d have concluded semis were the obvious place to be, because on trend alone they are. If you only ran Gate 2 you’d have skipped them without noticing they’d been the best thing on the board all year.

Run both and you get the actual answer, which is that the move already happened and you’re looking at it after the fact.

Forty percent in six months. Nothing in the last one.

And the mirror image

Now look at the failed list.

Communication Services is up 4.34% over the last month, which is better momentum than eight of the twelve sectors on this board. On a momentum screen it’d be near the top.

And it’s down 5.36% over six months. The structure is broken.

That’s the same problem as semis, upside down. Momentum without trend, instead of trend without momentum.

Both fail. Both fail for opposite reasons. And a screen that only measures one of the two would have told you to buy one of them.

The gates aren’t a checklist. They’re two different questions, and the interesting answers are where they disagree.

What actually cleared

Three sectors passed both.

Energy is the strongest of them and the only one accelerating. +8.54% over the month against +14.09% over six, which means the last month did more than a sixth of the half-year’s work. Crude has been part of that, up over 3% in a single session at the start of this week.

Technology cleared on both, and it’s the only sector on the board doing that with a 30%-plus six-month run behind it.

Health Care is the quiet one. +8.80% and +5.07%, no drama in either number, and it’s been going up while nobody talked about it.

Three out of twelve is a normal reading. If ten sectors cleared both gates every week the gates wouldn’t be doing anything.

The board tells you where. Sunday’s letter tells you which names, with the entry, the stop and the target written down before the open, and they go live on the Trade Desk as they trigger. That one’s for members.

Gate 3, the one that isn’t on the board

Risk is a sizing gate. It runs per position, not per sector, so there’s no honest way to put it in a column next to the other two.

The market-level read this morning: the VIX is at 15.02, down 10.94% over the last month and 38.58% over six.

Volatility is low and it’s been falling for half a year. Which means the risk gate is about as open as it’s been all year, and the same position size carries less risk this morning than it did in March.

That’s not the same as saying nothing can go wrong. A low VIX is a description of what has happened, not a promise about what comes next, and quiet periods are where people quietly get bigger without deciding to.

Working out what your size should actually be at a given stop distance is arithmetic, and most people do it in their head or not at all. If you’d rather not, the position size calculator is free and there’s no signup.

One thing worth doing today

Find your open positions on that board and check which sector each one sits in.

If you’re holding something in Utilities, Industrials or Real Estate, you’re holding against both gates. That doesn’t automatically make it wrong, plenty of good trades happen in bad sectors. It does mean the sector isn’t helping you, and you should know that rather than assume.

If you’re holding semis, you’re in the best trend on the board and the worst month. Worth knowing which of those two you were actually trading.

I’m long two names on the squeeze book right now. One grew its revenue 454% last quarter and is 30% below its June high. The other missed on profit and hasn’t stopped climbing since.

Two of my open longs reported inside the last few weeks.

One of them put up numbers most companies will never see in their lifetime. Revenue up 454% on the year, a 40% EBITDA margin, contracts signed with the biggest names in computing.

Its stock is 30% below where it traded in June.

The other one missed on earnings, fell on the day, and has gone up more or less every week since.

The numbers do not set the price.

The numbers set the expectations.

The gap between those two things sets the price.

That gap is the only thing being repriced on any given day, and it is why I hold both of these and size them nothing like each other.

Four setups that crossed their triggers the week before spent the week going in four different directions, and I put on a new FX long.

Next week is the one that matters. US payrolls land on Friday, and they land on top of a July print that came in at minus 23,000 jobs. Consensus for August is somewhere around a positive 45,000, with unemployment expected to tick up to 4.2%.

ISM sits either side of midweek. The Bank of Canada and the RBNZ both decide in the middle of it.

That’s a week where the calendar does the moving, and I’m long a dollar pair straight through one of the two central bank meetings. More on that further down.

The one that beat everything and fell anyway

Nebius. It’s on the squeeze book and I’m long it.

Here’s the quarter. Revenue up 454% on the year. Adjusted EBITDA margin 40.6%. Full-year guidance reaffirmed at $3.0bn to $3.4bn of revenue against $20bn to $25bn of planned capital spending, with an annualised run-rate target of $7bn to $9bn. Contracted power target raised to five gigawatts. A five-year agreement with Meta worth up to roughly $27bn. More than $40bn of contracted revenue sitting behind it from investment-grade customers.

That is not a good quarter. That is a company being handed the infrastructure bill for an entire industry.

The stock closed Friday 30.2% below its June high.

It’s below its 21-day average and below its 50-day. It’s also 37% above its 200-day and up about 184% from where it traded in February.

All of those are true at once, and that combination is the entire trade. A violent uptrend having a violent rest.

The thing I’d point at is what the price is actually arguing about. Nobody is disputing the revenue. The argument is about the $20bn to $25bn of capital spending it takes to produce that revenue, whether the debt behind it stays cheap, and what the returns look like when everyone building this capacity finishes at once.

Those are real questions. They just aren’t answerable this quarter, so the price keeps re-arguing them every week.

“So why not just buy the one that’s going up?”

Because that’s the other one, and it’s a completely different animal.

Lyft. Also long, also on the squeeze book.

Its last quarter was, on the headline, worse. Earnings of $0.13 against $0.15 expected. A miss. Revenue came in slightly ahead at $1.84bn, gross bookings rose 23% to $5.5bn, rides hit a record 262.4 million, and active riders passed 30 million for the first time.

The profit miss came from sales and marketing, which jumped 68% to $320m. They bought that growth.

The stock fell about 1% on the day and closed at $16.30.

It closed Friday at $17.70.

It’s above its 20-day, its 50-day, its 50-day and its 200-day, all four, which is the cleanest structure you can ask a chart for. It’s up about 14% in a month and 25% in three. And it’s doing it on falling volume, which is the least dramatic and most durable way for a stock to go up.

So one of my longs has extraordinary numbers and a broken short-term chart. The other has a mediocre headline and a chart with everything stacked in the right order.

Both are fine. Neither is a contradiction. They’re just two different jobs.

“Then how do you hold both without kidding yourself?”

By sizing them nothing alike, and this is the part I actually want you to take away.

Over the last 20 sessions, Nebius has been running at roughly 142% annualised volatility. Lyft has been running at about 41%.

That’s a 3.5x difference in how hard the thing moves.

If I put the same number of pounds into both, I am not taking the same risk twice. I’m taking one small position and one enormous one, and I only find out which is which on the day something goes wrong.

To risk the same amount on both, the Nebius position has to be roughly a third of the size of the Lyft one. Same conviction, same book, same method. Completely different position size, because the market is moving one of them three and a half times harder than the other.

This is Gate 3, and it’s the gate almost nobody runs properly. Trend and momentum decide whether you take it. Risk decides how much, and how much is where accounts actually die.

A trader who sizes every position identically is not being disciplined. They’re being arithmetic-blind.

The new one, and the central bank sitting in the middle of it

I went long USD/CAD last week. Entry, stop and first target are below the break.

What I’ll say up here is the shape of it: just under a hundred pips of risk against a first target a bit under two hundred, so slightly under 2R if it fills. It’s currently a little way in front.

And the Bank of Canada decides on rates in the middle of this coming week, while I’m holding it.

If you read last week’s letter you’ll know exactly what I’m going to say about that, because it’s the same answer as Nvidia’s earnings. A scheduled event doesn’t change whether the trade is valid. It changes how much of it you should be holding.

The stop was written down before the trade existed. The central bank doesn’t get to renegotiate it. What the central bank gets to do is gap straight through it, which is a size problem, not a stop problem.

So I’m not closing it into Wednesday and buying it back after. That’s the flinch, I named it last week, and it costs more than it saves.

The Trade Desk

The four from last week, graded

Last letter I said four setups had crossed their triggers. Here’s where they finished the week, and one of them is the answer to a promise I made.

DLO is below its trigger. About 3% underwater from where it crossed. I told you last week that re-entering at a higher trigger after being stopped out is the disciplined version of a second entry, and I still believe that. It hasn’t paid yet. A week is not a verdict, but I promised you I’d grade it and the honest grade right now is “not working.”

AMZN is the best of the four, up a bit under 2% from its trigger.

BEAM is roughly flat, a fraction above.

AMD is slightly below, about 1% under.

So of the four setups I published a week ago: one clearly working, one flat, two underwater. That is an ordinary week and it is what an ordinary week looks like when you write it down in advance instead of remembering it afterwards.

Nvidia, and what I’m not going to claim

I told you before the print that I wasn’t touching the position and that I couldn’t predict the number.

It beat, and then it did something more interesting. It gapped up over 6%, closed up 8.74% on the Thursday, and gave back 4.57% on the Friday.

Net of the whole event, from the close before the results to the close on Friday, it’s up about 3.8%. Two of the loudest sessions of the year, and most of the move is already gone.

The position is still open. It’s in the earnings window, which on my desk means it’s managed by hand rather than by the automatic rules, and I am not calling it a win while it’s open. I’ll report it when it closes, whichever way it goes.

Wednesday.

Nvidia reports second-quarter results after the close tonight. It’s on their own investor calendar, 26 August, 2:00 PM Pacific. Not a rumour, not a whisper number, a date they published weeks ago.

Half the market has spent this week deciding what to do about it.

I decided 44 days ago.

The trend gate passed in July.

The momentum gate passed in July.

The risk gate sized it so a bad night couldn’t do real damage.

Nothing announced after the bell tonight changes any of those three answers, so nothing changes about the position.

What happens tonight

Nvidia publishes Q2 FY27 numbers at 2:00 PM Pacific, which is 10pm here. The company listed the date on its investor relations events page weeks ago, so anyone claiming an edge on the timing is selling something.

Yesterday it closed at 213.05. That’s about 10% under the May high of 236.54 and roughly 30% above the March low of 164.27. It’s sitting above its 50-day average and just under its 20-day.

That’s the whole setup. A stock in an uptrend, mid-range, with a scheduled event tonight.

Three reports, three red next days, and the trend never broke.

Now the part that never makes it into the “earnings are a catalyst” posts.

The last three times this company reported, the stock fell the next day. Every time. Down 3.15% after the November report, down 5.46% after February, down 1.77% after May.

Three for three, all red.

And it’s up 30% from the March low anyway.

“You’re gambling on a coin flip”

I get this reply every quarter and it’s fair, so let’s take it seriously.

I’m not predicting tonight. I’ve no idea whether the number beats or misses, and neither does anyone posting a price target about it this afternoon. If holding this position depended on guessing the print right, I wouldn’t hold it.

It doesn’t depend on that.

The reaction day and the trend are two different questions, and people keep answering the first when they’re being asked the second. A print moves the stock for a day or two. What decides whether the position pays is where it sits three months later, and three months later has been settled by the trend every time so far.

So take the same three prints and follow them forward instead of stopping at the reaction.

Two of the three paid, and both made you sit through a 10% drawdown first.

Two of those three are up double digits for anyone who held. One is still underwater three months on, and it’s in the letter because a card with three green numbers on it would be a lie.

That May print is the honest one. The stock closed at 219.51 the day after, went to 190.01 by late July, a 13.4% drawdown, and it’s still 2.9% below where it was. Anyone who bought that reaction and called it long-term investing has had a rough summer.

So holding isn’t free. It costs you drawdowns like that, twice in nine months. And if a 13% drawdown would make you sell at the worst possible moment, the position’s too big and the risk gate already failed before the print ever showed up.

This one costs more than the coin-flip objection and almost nobody counts it.

Take the November report. The stock closed at 186.52 the night before. Next morning it gapped up 5% and opened at 195.95, which felt like confirmation. The news was good. The chart was green. Everything the flincher had been waiting for turned up at once.

By lunchtime it was trading at 179.85, which is 8.2% below that open. It closed the day down 3.15%.

Nine months on, the person who held through the print is up 14.2%. The person who closed the night before and bought the gap-up open is up 8.7%.

That’s 5.5 points of return handed over to feel calmer for one evening.

Waiting for the news to clear cost 5.5 points of return and removed no risk at all.

I’m calling this the earnings flinch, because it isn’t a strategy and it doesn’t behave like one. It’s an exit you take to stop feeling something, and it’s the only exit in the whole trade nobody writes down in advance. Your stop is planned. Your target is planned. The flinch gets improvised at 8pm with your thumb over the sell button.

Stepping aside for the event doesn’t remove the risk. It moves it to a worse price and hands you a second decision you now have to get right as well.

Fair, and I want to answer this properly, because two of the four setups that crossed this week are re-entries and one of them stopped me out eight days before I called it again.

DLO. Entry 15.00, stop 13.72, target 17.51. Stopped on 18 August for a full minus 1R. That’s on my public record, it isn’t tidied away, you can open the page and find it in the closed-trades table.

Eight days later I put it back on the board with a new trigger. Higher than the entry that just failed, not lower. The number’s below the break in this letter, but the direction is the part that teaches.

That’s the whole answer. Averaging down is buying more of something while it proves you wrong. A second entry at a higher trigger says the first attempt was early, the thesis is intact, and price has to come and prove it before I’ll pay again. If it never reaches that level I never get filled, and being wrong the first time costs me nothing extra.

It crossed on Monday.

The stop came off and the new trigger went in higher, not lower.

BEAM is the same argument with a longer history and it’s less flattering. I’ve called that name four times. December 2025, target hit, plus 2.02R. February, stopped, minus 1R. July, stopped, minus 1R. It crossed again on Monday and it’s the best performer of the four this week.

One win, two losses, and the fourth is live. That’s what a real book looks like on a name you keep going back to.

If it read win, win, win, you should assume I was editing.

The market state, four gauges

Risk on or off. On, quietly. Four separate setups crossed their triggers this week across two different books, and two of them are small-cap squeeze names rather than megacaps. Money moving down the cap scale while everyone stares at one chip company isn’t a defensive tape.

Where the crowd is. Tonight. Positioning across the whole AI complex has bunched around one scheduled event, which is exactly the trade I’m not adding to. My position was on before the crowd arrived and I’m not increasing it into the thing they’re all watching.

The overlooked corner. The squeeze book. Nobody’s writing threads about small-cap biotech and fintech this week, and that’s usually when those setups get filled at sensible prices instead of chased.

The 3-Gate verdict. Trend gate open, momentum mixed, risk gate tight. Normal size on names that triggered on their own merit, no new size on anything going into a scheduled event. If you take one instruction out of this letter, take the second half of that sentence.

Four crossed the line this week, and nothing closed

Unusual week. Not a single trade closed since the last letter, so there’s no scoreboard to run and I’m not padding one by re-running wins you already read about.

What happened instead is four setups crossed their triggers.

You had a good week but ended up giving back half of your gains on Friday. While you had a winning trade, you closed it before it could pay off fully. You’re not lacking in trading setups; rather, you struggle with the discipline to hold onto the good ones and to cut the bad ones early.

In June, I put AUGO on the board when it was near 47 to 53, just as the market looked ugly and nobody wanted to own it. By Friday, it closed at 86.69. You can find the entry details and the date on the Desk. Go take a look.Sunday.

Last week we closed seven trades. Three won. Four lost.

The account finished up 3.81R.

I want to sit on that for a second, because it’s the whole job in one line and almost nobody trades like they believe it.

Three winners, Four losers.

Up 3.81R on the week.

You do not need to be right more than half the time. You need your winners bigger than your losers, and the discipline to actually let them get there.

📅 What happened last week

Seven trades, three markets. The two that carried the week were BTC and ETH, both long, both let run to target instead of grabbed early. The four reds were small, taken at the stop I wrote down before the trade existed, no arguing with them, no widening.

Net of all of it: +3.81R.

That is the number that matters, and it’s a number a losing-week trader can post. Win rate was 43% and it was still a good week. If that sounds backwards, the next two sections are for you.

“Four losers and you call that a good week?”

Yes. Because I never let a red get bigger than one unit, and I let the greens run past it.

Here is the math with round numbers so it’s obvious. Say every loss costs you 1R. Four losses, that’s minus 4R. Now say your three winners came in at, roughly, the sizes mine did last week. Add them up and you clear the four losses with change to spare. Result: minus 4, plus the winners, still up 3.81R on the week.

The reader who blows up doesn’t do it on entries. They do it by cutting the winner at plus 0.8R because they’re scared to give it back, then letting the loser run to minus 3R because they’re sure it’ll come good. Small wins, big losses. That’s the account killer, and it has nothing to do with being right.

I call the fix renting the trade versus owning it. A renter gets in and bails at the first wobble, over and over, and pays a fee every time. An owner takes the position to the level they wrote down, or to the stop, and nothing in between moves them. Last week I owned $BTC and $ETH to target and rented nothing.

Market state

The fixed read, same four gauges every week so you can watch them change.

• Risk: on. Crypto led, high-beta names extended, the Kiwi dollar broke higher. That’s a risk-on tape, not a defensive one.

• Where the crowd is: still piled into AI and semis. That’s fine until it isn’t, and it’s not where I’m hunting.

• The overlooked corner: metals and miners. Nobody wanted gold-related names in June. Look at one of them now (AUGO, below). The money is usually in the aisle everyone else walked past.

• 3-Gate market verdict: trend gate open, momentum gate open, risk gate says size normal, not heroic. Good conditions, not a green light to get reckless.

None of that is a forecast. It’s a description of the board as it sits, so you know what kind of week you’re sizing into.

The one I called in June, for the patient money

This section is for the longer-term investors reading, and there are more of you every week.

Back in June, AUGO was ugly. It had bled from the mid-70s down toward the low 50s and then kept going. I marked three entries on it: a first entry as it came back to the 0.382, a second at the 0.5, and the one I actually leaned on, the blood-in-the-street entry down at the 0.618 to 0.786 zone, roughly 47 to 53, where the chart looks broken and the headlines agree with the chart.

That is the entry nobody wants, which is exactly why it pays.

Friday it closed at 86.69. From the blood-in-the-street zone that’s the thick end of a 60% move, and it isn’t done: my Target 1 sits up at the 106.67 extension. Add the setup fuel, a 35M float with 30% of it short, and you have a name that squeezes when it’s forced to.

I’m not telling you to buy it here, up 60% from where I flagged it. The point is the method. The best entries feel terrible. If you wait for the chart to look good and the news to agree, you’re buying what already worked, in the rearview mirror, from the people who bought it in the blood.

The prop side: a clean Vol Entry on NZD/USD

Different account, different timeframe, same discipline.

On the Desk’s 1-hour Vol Entries feed last week, NZD/USD printed a Vol Buy into the shelf around 0.5850 while the daily was pressing on the 0.5877 resistance it had been stuck under. The trigger fired, the pair broke the shelf, and it ran up toward 0.5988 without giving the entry back.

One is a two-month hold on a miner. One is an intraday trigger on a currency. They’re the same trade underneath: a level written down in advance, an entry taken when the condition prints, and no renting in between.

“How am I supposed to hold something for two months?”

You don’t hold it by watching it. You hold it by having written the exit down before you were in, so there’s no live decision left to fumble.

AUGO didn’t need me from June to Friday. It needed me once, at the entry, and once more if it hit the stop. Everything in between was noise I’d already decided to ignore. The reason people can’t hold is they never fixed the exit, so every candle is a fresh negotiation and eventually they lose one.

I’ve been logging every single trade from my short-squeeze account the winners and the ones that got stopped out into this journal I built myself. Looking at the last 32 closed ones, it’s 14 wins and 18 losses. Yeah, I lose more often than I win. The entries and stops all went out in the letters before the trades even happened, and the dates are right there on every post.

I lose more trades than I win.

I’ve lost more trades than I’ve won for as long as I’ve been keeping proper records.

I’ll lose more trades than I win next year as well.

The account went up anyway, and that isn’t a paradox or a humblebrag, it’s arithmetic nobody bothers to do.

Most people check the win rate first. It’s the number in the biggest font on every screenshot you’ve ever seen posted, it’s the first thing anyone asks in a DM, and it’s the one metric on my own score card I’d take off if I thought people would still use the thing.

I built that card. I’m telling you its headline number is close to useless on its own.

📅 What the journal said on Tuesday

I opened the journal on Tuesday morning to check something unrelated, and screenshotted the score card because the shape of it makes the point better than I can.

Overall 73 out of 100. Win rate 43.8%, which scores 44 and is the shortest bar on the card. Profit factor 1.61. Average winner 2.32R. Worst drawdown the account has been through, 4.7%. Consistency and recovery both maxed.

Thirty-two closed trades. Fourteen green, eighteen red.

So the weakest-looking number on the card belongs to a book that’s comfortably profitable, and the card is quietly telling me to go and fix the one thing I’d be mad to touch.

Seventy-three out of a hundred, and the lowest bar on the card is the one everybody leads with.

❓ But being wrong 56% of the time means I’m bad at this

It means the entries are ordinary. That’s genuinely all it means.

Here’s the bit almost nobody sits down and works out. The win rate you need just to break even isn’t a fixed thing. It moves with how far your winners run. One divided by one plus the reward. That’s the whole formula and it takes ten seconds.

At even money, where a winner pays what a loser costs, you need better than 50% or you’re going backwards. At 2R you need 33.3%. At 2.32R, which is where mine actually land, you need 30.1%.

I’m doing 43.8%.

That’s nearly fourteen points of cushion above the line where the book stops making money, and not one point of it came from being a better forecaster. It came from where the exit was written.

🧾 Eighteen losses and not one of them got away

This is the part I’d actually want you to look at, and it’s the part nobody screenshots.

Pull up the R-multiple distribution on the second card. Eighteen red trades, and every one of them sits in the bucket between minus one and zero. Not a single loss got past its stop. No gapping through, no “I’ll give it a bit more room”, no widening anything at four o’clock because the thesis is still valid.

Thirteen of the fourteen winners landed between 2R and 3R. One went past 3R.

That distribution is the system. The entries decide which bucket a trade lands in. The exits decide how big the buckets are, and only one of those two is under my control on a given Tuesday.

The card also prints the longest run of consecutive losses. Eight.

Eight in a row, and the worst peak-to-trough this account has been through across the entire record is 4.7%.

Every red trade sits between minus one and zero. That column is the risk management, not the entries.

🔍 The receipt, and how to check it without paying me anything

Two of these. Both free to check, neither of them my word.

One. The system quality number on that card, 1.51, isn’t mine. It’s Van Tharp’s SQN, published decades ago, and it weighs the average R against how much the R varies across the sample. The card grades it as an early read and says so on its own face: 32 trades of the roughly 100 you’d want before calling it anything. I’m quoting a number that is openly telling you my sample is too small, because that’s what an honest metric does, and it’s why I put it on the card.

Two, and this one is worth thirty seconds of your time. Open the rules page of any prop firm you’ve ever considered. Any of them. Read the evaluation criteria properly.

Profit target. Maximum daily loss. Maximum overall drawdown. Minimum trading days, sometimes.

Nowhere on that page is there a win rate.

Not one firm in the industry gates a payout on how often you’re right. They gate on what a bad run costs, which is precisely the thing a win rate cannot see. These are companies whose entire business model is working out which traders survive, and they don’t ask the question everyone else asks first.

❓ Your last thirty days say eight wins and three losses, so which is it

Both, and this is the whole trap in miniature.

The board’s closed record over the last month reads 8-3. That’s a 73% hit rate, and it’s a long way north of the 43.8% on the card. If I were trying to sell you something I’d screenshot the month and never mention the record.

Eleven trades isn’t a sample. It’s a month.

Run a book like this long enough and stretches like that fall out of it regularly. The same 32-trade record contains a run of six straight winners and a run of eight straight losers. Neither of those told me anything at the time about whether I was any good, and the one that felt most like information was the good one.

The month is a nice month. The record is the thing that pays.

❓ My win rate is 70% and I’m still down

I get this one a lot, and it’s the whole letter in a sentence.

Say you’re right seven times in ten. Genuinely right, no fiddling. But you close winners as soon as they’re comfortably green, so a winner pays about half of what a loser costs. Seventy winners at half a unit is thirty-five. Thirty losers at a full unit is thirty.

A hundred trades, right seven times in ten, and you’re up five units.

The 43.8% book puts up forty-five over the same hundred, off a measured expectancy of +0.451R a trade. Nine times the money, from the trader who’s wrong more often than he’s right.

And the 70% book is fragile in a way that doesn’t show up until it matters. Its profit factor is 1.17. One widened stop, one position held through a gap, and the entire year’s edge is gone. The 43.8% book has an eight-trade losing streak in its record and the drawdown never got past 4.7%.

The book that is right seven times in ten takes home a ninth of what the wrong one does.

💸 The green-tick exit

Here’s how the win rate actually does damage, and it isn’t by being a bad statistic. It’s a bad statistic that makes you do things.

You’re in a position. It’s up a bit. Not at target, nowhere near it, but it’s green and it’s been green since the open, and there’s a version of this where it comes back and stops you out and you feel like an idiot. So you close it. Small win. Green tile in the journal. Win rate ticks up.

I’d call that the green-tick exit, and I’ve done it more times than I’d like to write down.

Nothing about it feels like a mistake at the time. It feels like discipline. Taking profits, managing risk, not being greedy, all the phrases that sound like the right thing to be doing.

Run it across ten trades and it stops being a feeling.

Ten entries, same stops, same targets. Four of them eventually reach that target. Three more trade into profit first and then come back and stop out. Three never go anywhere at all.

Take the tick every time and you finish at 70% and up 1.2R. Leave them alone and you finish at 40% and up 3.2R.

Same ten trades. Same entries, same stops, same everything. Thirty points of win rate, bought for two thirds of the profit.

❓ So I should just hold everything to target

No, and this is the version of the idea that costs people money.

Hold everything to a target you picked because it sounded good and you’ll find out quickly that a 5R target with a 44% hit rate isn’t a system, it’s a lottery ticket with extra steps.

The target has to sit somewhere price can actually get to, and on this book that means it comes off structure — the level the move was heading for anyway — rather than off some reward multiple I fancied on the day. 2.32R is the average of where those targets happened to land. It’s an output, not an input. I’ve never once opened a position and decided it needed to make 2.3.

The rule is narrower than “let your winners run”, and it’s this: the exit gets written before the entry exists, and then it doesn’t get renegotiated by a bloke watching a green number move.

That part is the hard part, and it’s got nothing to do with charts.

📊 So which number should I actually watch

If you take one thing off this letter, take this. There are six numbers on that score card, and only one of them gets better when you trade worse.

Close your winners early and the win rate goes up. Today. No skill required.

Try that with profit factor and it falls. Try it with average winner and it falls. Drawdown control, consistency, recovery — none of them budge for you, because each one measures something you can only move by actually improving.

The most quoted number in retail trading is the only one on the card a worse trader can raise on purpose. Which is roughly why it gets quoted.

Watch expectancy instead. Mine is +0.451R a trade, and it answers the only question that matters: across a big enough sample, what does the average trade pay. Then watch what a bad run costs, because that’s the number deciding whether you’re still in the seat to collect the expectancy.

Five of the six can only be moved by improving. The famous one can be moved this afternoon.

Almost nobody can tell you their expectancy, their average winner, or what their worst run actually cost. Those three live in the head as a feeling instead of a figure, which is why the feeling is always worse than the reality, and why people change the wrong thing after a bad fortnight.

Sunday. Three off the board, all three at target.

I’ll show you the numbers in a minute. First I want to say the thing nobody says after a run like this.

This ends.

Not might end. Ends. I don’t know if that’s next Tuesday or in six weeks, but a stretch where everything I touch comes off at the number I wrote down is not the normal condition of this job, and treating it like the new baseline is how people give it all back.

So we bank it, we’re happy about it, and we move on.

Three targets doesn’t make me right.

Three targets makes this a good fortnight.

Three targets inside a losing quarter would still be a losing quarter.

The number I actually watch is what a bad run costs me, and that number didn’t move this week.

📅 What happened between 31 July and 13 August

Three positions opened across five days. All three long, all three off the same short-squeeze screen, all three closed at the written target.

SAIL went on the board Thursday 31 July and came off Wednesday 13 August. Thirteen days.

TWST went on Sunday 3 August and came off Tuesday the 12th. Nine days.

PATH went on Monday 4 August and came off the same Tuesday. Eight days.

No stops taken in the window. Nothing closed early, nothing closed late, nothing renegotiated while the P&L was moving.

That’s the whole fortnight.

Three positions, three open dates, and the same result at the end of each.

and I showed you on Wednesday. The R is a fraction off what I quoted then because these are the exact fills rather than the rounded entries.

Three names. 2.12R, 2.03R, 2.02R.

A software company, a DNA printer, and a data platform. Different sectors, different stories, priced from thirteen dollars to ninety-seven, opened on three separate days, held for eight, nine and thirteen days.

All three landed inside a tenth of an R of each other.

I’ve been asked whether that’s a coincidence. It isn’t, and it isn’t clever either. It’s what happens when the exit is decided before the entry, because then the only thing that varies is how long you wait.

🧾 The receipt, and how to check it yourself

❓ So should I size up while it’s working

No. And this is the specific way good fortnights get expensive.

There’s a thing I’d call the good-run upgrade, and I’ve done it more than once. It doesn’t announce itself. You don’t wake up one morning and decide to gamble. What happens is subtler and much easier to justify.

Three come off at target, so the next one gets a slightly bigger size, because clearly the screen is working.

The one after that gets a stop a bit further away than you’d normally accept, because look at the last three.

Then a name that doesn’t quite clear the third condition goes on anyway, because you can see it, you know how this goes.

Every one of those is defensible on its own. Together they’re a different strategy than the one that produced the run, going on at exactly the moment the run is most likely to be over.

The size that made 2.12R on SAIL was decided by the distance to the stop. Not by how the last three went. Not by how I feel on a Sunday with three targets behind me.

The streak doesn’t make you better. It makes you braver, and braver is expensive.

❓ Why am I talking down three winners

Because the winners aren’t the product.

Anyone can have a fortnight like this. Genuinely anyone, including someone running a screen they don’t understand in a month where squeezes happen to be working. If you follow enough accounts you’ve seen a dozen people post a run like this in the last two weeks, and some of them are a fortnight from being wiped out.

What separates them isn’t the good run. Everybody gets one of those eventually.

It’s what the bad run costs.

A stretch where four go against you doesn’t have to be a problem. On this book it’s a defined number, because every position has a written stop and a size that comes off the distance to it. Four losses in a row is uncomfortable and it’s survivable, and I know roughly what it looks like before it happens.

That’s the part I’m actually selling. Not the fortnight.

The good weeks look after themselves. This is the number I actually watch.

📋 THE BOARD — week ahead

Monday 3 August I put two names on the board. at 13.09, stop 11.95, target 15.42. at 97.60, stop 84.01, target 124.85. Both written down in full before either was a position.

Nine days later, on Wednesday, both hit target. The dates are on the Desk results page.

Both hit. That is the least interesting sentence in this letter.

The price was different by a factor of eight.

📈 What Came Off The Board

Two target hits. A software company that automates back-office work, and a company that prints synthetic DNA.

Both went on the board on the same Monday. Both came off on the same Wednesday, nine days later. Neither one knows the other exists.

I’ll put the numbers up because both trades are finished. A closed target can’t be front-run and it isn’t worth hiding. What is worth looking at is that they came off at the number written down at the start, not at a number decided while the position was open and the P&L was moving.

2.04R and 2.01R. Two businesses with nothing in common, priced eight times apart, opened the same day, closed the same day, landing three hundredths of an R from each other.

That is not luck. It’s the only thing being selected for, and the rest of this letter is how.

🔎 How Both Of Them Got On The List

Here is the part I actually get asked about, and it is less mysterious than people want it to be.

Both names cleared the same three conditions before I looked at either chart properly. All three are measurable, none of them requires an opinion about the business, and you can check all three in about a minute.

Short float above 20%. One in five available shares borrowed and sold. Every one of those has to be bought back eventually, so there is a supply of forced buyers sitting underneath the price. Both of this week’s winners were well over that line.

High volume. Somebody is actually there. Volume is the difference between a level being defended and a level being ignored, and it’s what turns a squeeze from a theory into something mechanical. A crowded short with no volume is a crowded short that stays crowded.

A good technical area. Price sitting somewhere a stop can go. Structure underneath that has already held at least once, so there is a definable price at which the whole idea is wrong.

Now the important part, and it’s the part that gets skipped.

That screen is not a buy signal. It’s a list of things worth ten more minutes. I could hand you the exact same three lines tonight, you could run them, and you’d get back forty names. Buying forty names because they cleared a screen is not a strategy, it’s a spending plan.

Short interest tells you a violent move is possible. It tells you nothing about direction, nothing about timing, and nothing about whether there is a trade in it for you specifically. Crowded shorts stay crowded for years and plenty of them just quietly bleed out.

🚪 Why Only Some Of Them Get Taken

So the screen fills the list. Something else empties it.

Gate 1 asks whether it’s already moving in the direction I want. Not whether it should, not whether it’s cheap. Both of these had stopped making lower lows and started making higher ones before either got looked at seriously. That’s the third screen condition doing its job.

Gate 2 asks whether the condition I wrote down has actually printed. Not whether it’s about to.

Gate 3 is the one that decided both of these, and it’s the one nobody talks about, because it’s arithmetic and arithmetic doesn’t trend.

💵 The Cheap One

PATH is the clean version. Entry 13.09, and the only price that genuinely proved the idea wrong sat at 11.95, right underneath the structure that made it a setup in the first place. That’s 8.7% away. Target 15.42.

The stop is the only interesting decision on this one. 11.95 isn’t a round number and it isn’t a percentage I picked off a list. It’s the price just under the structure that had already held once, which is the only place a stop is worth putting. Round numbers are where everybody else’s stops sit, and that is precisely why price keeps going there to collect them.

I thought the setup looks good the RR looks good now can we break higher.

Nothing exotic. The stop had a place to sit, the target had a level to aim at, and the distance between them paid twice what the risk cost. Gate 3 said yes and it got taken at a normal size.

🧮 The Part That Makes Them The Same Trade

TWST is where it gets interesting, because on the surface it’s a completely different animal. Eight times the price. A stop 13.9% away instead of 8.7%. If you size that off instinct, off how much you like the idea, you take the same dollar position you took in the cheap one and you end up risking nearly double the money without ever deciding to.

Draw both in R and the difference vanishes.

One R is just the distance from entry to stop. Measured that way, both risked one unit to make two. Same risk, same reward, same decision, and the eight-times price gap and the wider stop are handled entirely by the share count.

That’s the whole trick, and it’s genuinely this boring: the volatility gets priced into the size, so it never has to be priced into your nerve. A wide stop is not dangerous. A wide stop with a share count picked by feel is what’s dangerous, and those two things get confused constantly.

💸 The Expensive One

Same trade, considerably harder to sit through.

A 13.9% stop on a hundred-dollar name means the position posts daily swings larger than the entire risk on the cheap one. That is where the discipline actually gets tested, and it isn’t at entry. It’s somewhere in the middle, when the P&L is moving around and the arithmetic you did while calm starts to feel theoretical.

The share count was cut to match the wider stop, and that is the only reason those swings were survivable. Same dollar at risk as the first one. Roughly 60% of the shares.

This one gapped down on the day we entered and reversed hard volume spiked and we took it 3 hours into the NY session.

⛔ What Would Have Kept Both Of Them Off The Board

The useful question isn’t why these two got taken. It’s what would have stopped them, because that’s the version you can apply to whatever you’re looking at right now.

Move PATH’s stop down to 11.00 instead of 11.95, on the reasoning that you want to give it room. Same entry, same target. It’s now 1.11R. Same chart, same story, same short float, same volume, and it doesn’t get taken.

That is the entire discipline in one sentence. Nothing about the setup changed. The only thing that changed was where the stop went, and it turned a trade into a coin flip you have to be right about twice as often to break even.

The version that costs people money is the reverse: pulling the stop tighter than the structure justifies so the R multiple clears 2, then getting knocked out by noise the setup always contained. The stop goes at the price that proves the idea wrong. Then you measure. If the measurement fails, the trade fails, and no amount of liking it changes the arithmetic.

Most names that clear all three screen conditions still die right here. Not because the story is weak, but because the only honest stop is so far away that the trade stops paying for the distance. A great story with nowhere to put the stop is not a trade. It’s an opinion with a share count attached.

📉 What Last Week Actually Cost

Four setups came off at target this week.

I’m not going to put the numbers up here, because a hit target is easy to be proud of and it isn’t the useful part. The useful part is that not one of them got taken early. Every entry waited for the condition to be met, and two of the four sat there long enough to be genuinely annoying before they triggered.

There’s a version of last week where I’m sitting on all four two days sooner, at better prices, feeling clever. That version also has me in three other names that approached their level, never crossed it, and rolled over. Those are invisible, because they never happened. They only stay invisible if you keep the rule.

🧭 Three Corners Of The Market

The seven names on the board this week sit in three places, and the concentration is deliberate.

Heavy infrastructure with a launch date attached. Two of the new calls live here. This is the corner where sentiment moves faster than fundamentals and the squeezes are violent in both directions. One of the two has an earnings print inside the setup window, which changes how it gets sized rather than whether it gets taken.

Power and compute. One call. The story here has been the same for eighteen months and the market keeps re-rating who counts as an infrastructure name and who counts as a commodity business. That re-rating is the trade.

The currency book. Three of the four pending setups. This is where the patience lives. FX levels take longer to resolve than equity levels and they respect a close far more reliably, which makes them the cleanest possible teaching example of Gate 2 and the most tedious to actually sit through.

⏳ Why Most Of This Book Is Still Waiting

Four of seven have no position and may never have one.

That is not indecision, and it is not a hedge. Each of the four has a written condition: a pullback into a level, a close above one, a close below another. Until the condition prints, there is no trade, regardless of how good the chart looks in the meantime.

The distinction matters more than it sounds. A level that is nearly reached is not most of a trade. It is not a trade. A setup sitting half a percent away has given you exactly as much information as one sitting five percent away, which is none, and the only thing that changes as it gets closer is how badly you want to jump.

One of the four is a short. It will spend the week looking wrong, because a short setup always does right up until it doesn’t.

Four setups hit their target this week.

MSFT hit $480. AMZN hit $273. AUD/USD hit 0.7074. MMED hit $19.

Two of those, MSFT and AMZN, I called earlier and told you about on 30 July. They only just came off. I’m restating them because a target that takes three weeks to arrive is still a target hit, and because of what MSFT did next: it kept going, and it’s trading $499.99 as I write this.

That last part is the lesson, and it’s uncomfortable. The gates did not get me out at the high. They got me out at the number I wrote down before I entered. Twenty dollars a share kept running without me and I am fine with that, because the alternative is a system I only follow when it agrees with me.

Has the thing I said would need to happen actually happened yet.

That’s it. Not “is it about to.” Not “does it look like it will.” Has it.

🚫 The Most Expensive Word On A Desk

The level was nearly there.

The setup was nearly ready.

The trade was nearly worth taking.

Nearly is the most expensive word on a trading desk. It is the word you reach for to justify entering before anything has actually happened, and it always arrives dressed as an advantage. You are not jumping the gun, you are getting a better price. You are not guessing, you are anticipating. You are not early, you are positioned.

Here is what you are actually doing. You are paying for a move that has not been confirmed, using a stop built for a setup that does not exist yet.

A trigger is not a forecast. It is a permission slip. Until it is signed you do not have permission, and how close you came to having permission is irrelevant. A level 0.4% away is not 99.6% of a trade. It is not a trade.

The two names I mentioned at the top have been sitting 0.4% and 0.7% short most of the week. Both look, on the chart, like they are about to go. Neither is a position, and neither will be until the level actually prints.

🎯 What Actually Counts As Crossed

This is where most of the advice stops, and it’s exactly where it gets useful.

“Wait for the level to cross” sounds like a complete instruction until you’re watching it happen. Price pokes through and comes back. A wick tags it and closes underneath. A candle finishes on the other side but the next one undoes it. Which of those is your signal.

If you haven’t answered that in writing, you’ll answer it in the moment, and in the moment you will pick whichever version lets you in.

Any of the three can be your rule. I use the close, because a close is the only one that tells you who won the session rather than who was briefly loud during it. But the specific choice matters far less than making it in advance and writing it down.

🖊️ The One I Entered Early

Sometimes you enter a trade on gut feeling its correct a few of your entry signals pinged you but not all. Trader intuition plays a huge part if your keeping your risk in check take the trade, you’ve seen this before execute.

⚖️ What Waiting Actually Costs

The objection to all of this is always the same, and it’s a fair one. Waiting means giving up the distance between where price is now and where your condition is met. On a fast move that distance is real money. Sometimes the level never comes at all and the thing runs without you.

That’s true. It’s also only one column of the ledger.

The other column is invisible, and that’s the entire problem. Every level that gets approached and rejected is a position the early entrant took and you didn’t. Those cost a full stop each. But avoided losses generate no emotion and leave no trace, so they never make it into the comparison your gut runs.

One side of that comparison is vivid, specific and remembered. The other side doesn’t exist in your memory at all. You cannot settle this argument by feel. You can only settle it from a written record.

🧭 The Four-Second Test

Everything above is preventative. Here’s the diagnostic, and you can run it tonight on trades you closed months ago.

Your account statement sorts trades by outcome. That’s why this problem survives for years in traders who are otherwise good at this: a loss on a valid setup and a loss on a trade that never triggered are the same red number, so nothing ever separates them.

Sort by process instead and they come apart immediately. Met and lost is the cost of doing business, and reviewing it for mistakes will only teach you to distrust something that worked. Not met and lost is an unforced error, and it’s the only pile worth counting.

Watch the fourth cell. Entered early, made money. It feels like the best outcome on the board and it’s the most dangerous, because it pays you for the exact habit that generates the losses, and you will do it again next week without noticing.

Now the part that keeps me honest. Seven names crossed this week. Six have gone the way they were supposed to, some of them hard. One crossed its trigger and has gone backwards ever since, and it’s sitting in the red on my board right now as a live position.

A gate is not a filter that removes losing trades. Nothing removes losing trades. Gate 2 does something narrower: it makes sure that when you lose, you lose on a trade that actually triggered, at a size you chose, with a stop built for the setup you’re really in.

A chart that’s been falling for weeks. Down a long way, the selling looks tired, and there’s a level just underneath where it bounced twice before.

You’ve read enough about the company to think the market is being unfair about it. So you buy a bit.

It drops. You buy a bit more, because now it’s better value than when you liked it at the higher price.

Three weeks later you’re out, down more than you planned, and the thing you keep circling back to is that you were right about the company.

You probably were. It just never mattered.

The first check is the one people skip. They look at the chart they trade, see it turning up, and call it a trend.

That’s half the job. The timeframe above has to agree first.

And notice the middle outcome. Higher timeframe up, your timeframe down, that isn’t a failure. It’s a pullback inside an uptrend.

The gate stays green. You just haven’t got an entry yet.

The picture that costs people money

It looks exactly like the start of a recovery.

It has to, because a real recovery starts exactly like this. Nobody can tell them apart while it’s happening, including everyone who explains afterwards that it was obvious.

Stacked in order is a fact. Anyone can look at your chart and agree with you.

Stretched. Oversold. Due a bounce. Those are opinions dressed as facts.

Count what has to go right

Go with the trend → you make money if the market keeps doing what it’s already doing.

Go against it → the market has to stop, then turn, then do it while you’re still in the position.

I can’t give you a percentage. Anyone who quotes you one has invented it.

What this gate costs you

You will never buy the low. Not once.

You’ll spot reversals early, be right about them, and not take them. Someone will catch the exact turn and post about it. That stings, and it keeps stinging.

You give up the bottoms, all of them. In exchange, you’re never the person holding something that keeps falling while they repeat the word oversold.

Over one trade that looks like a bad deal. Over two hundred it isn’t close.

When the trend is right and the trade still isn’t

Gate 1 is still green. That’s the trap.

The stop hasn’t moved. It’s still sitting where the idea would be proven wrong, which was sensible from the entry zone and is an enormous distance from here.

The trend gives permission. It does not give you a price.

Do this today, whether you ever pay me anything

Take your last twenty losing trades. Ignore the P&L, look at the setups.

Was the timeframe above the one I traded pointing my way when I entered?

Count the nos. Most people find theirs cluster in one of two places

→ A name they’d decided they liked before they looked at the chart

→ A market with no trend at all

That’s the whole method. It’s yours now, and it works whether or not you read another word.

Both kept running after we booked them. I want to be honest about how that feels, because everyone gets this wrong at the start: watching a stock you just sold keep climbing is worse than taking a loss. A loss is over. This one keeps going, in public, every day, reminding you what you left behind.

The number was set before entry, when nobody had any money on the line and nobody had an opinion worth protecting. Moving it afterwards isn’t optimisation. It’s just deciding, mid-trade, that the version of you holding a winner has better judgement than the version who planned it. He doesn’t. He’s the same person with more adrenaline.

Moving your target mid trade because the last trade ran another 1R is not a system you can record and repeat. Just don’t.

Three replaced them

Three setups cleared all three gates this week and went live on the board.

Names and levels are below for members, but the interesting part is free, because it isn’t the names.

Two of the three are breakouts. You’re buying strength, entering above a level as price leaves it, and the trade is wrong if it comes back through. The third is the opposite. It’s a pullback, waiting for price to come down and tag a zone before you touch it, and it’s wrong if the zone fails to hold.

Same board. Same three gates. Opposite instructions.

The Trade Desk

That’s the bit that confuses people about systems, and it’s worth slowing down on. A system doesn’t hand you one behaviour. It hands you a way of deciding which behaviour a chart is asking for. Gate 2 is where that decision happens, and it’s why I split entry into “the zone” and “the signal” rather than treating entry as one thing.

Buy a breakout on a chart that wanted a pullback and you’re paying the worst price available. Wait for a pullback on a chart that’s already gone and you’ll watch the whole move from the sidelines, then chase it three days later at exactly the wrong moment.

The one that gets ignored

Here’s what nobody looks at on a board like this: the three setups have almost identical reward for the risk. Around 2.1 to 2.5 times what’s being risked, all three.

That isn’t luck. It’s the filter. Anything that didn’t offer roughly that much never made it onto the list, no matter how good the story was.

But the stops are wildly different in percentage terms. One of the three has a stop about twice as far from entry as another, in percentage terms. Same reward ratio, very different distance to being wrong.

Which means the three positions are not the same size. They can’t be. If you’re risking a fixed percentage of the account on each, the one with the widest stop gets the smallest position, and the one with the tightest stop gets the biggest. Run all three at the same position size and you’ve quietly made the widest-stop trade your biggest risk on the board, which is the exact opposite of what you intended.

Most blown accounts I’ve looked at didn’t die from bad entries. They died from correct entries at sizes nobody calculated.

It had been on the watchlist for a while doing nothing, and there’s a specific kind of boredom that sets in with a chart you’ve been staring at. You start wanting it to do something so you can stop watching it. That’s not analysis, that’s fatigue, and twice this year I’ve entered early purely to end the waiting.

Then Robert Half, in at $26.21. Nothing dramatic about it — price had reclaimed the EMA cluster and held there, the DeM Bars turned in the zone, stop under the zone before I clicked. Three gates green, so I took it. Same as any other.

It ran to $32.60. Twenty-four percent. £5.3K.

The bit that matters: I didn’t know. That’s not modesty, there’s nothing in my process designed to know. RHI cleared the same three gates FLG did. Both earned a click. The market then did something completely different with each of them, and no amount of staring at either chart beforehand would’ve told me which was which.

One cost me 1R. The other paid for a lot of 1Rs.

Those two trades are why this series exists.

This is part one of ten. I’m going to take the 3-Gate System apart properly over the next nine letters, one gate at a time, including the bits I get wrong. But there’s no point walking you through the mechanics until today’s idea sits right, so today is just the idea.

Here it is.

You’re not paid to know what happens next. You’re paid to click only when the conditions have lined up. Two different jobs. Most traders are doing the first one while genuinely believing they’re doing the second, and it took me an embarrassingly long time to notice I was one of them.

Two traders, one chart

Same candles. Same session. Same everything.

The first is asking where’s this going. Feels like the obvious question. It’s also a question the market has never answered in advance for anybody, ever, which means his whole process is now balanced on something he can’t touch. Wins teach him nothing, because he can’t separate skill from a coin landing his way. Losses feel like a personal verdict, so the stop drifts. And afterwards there’s nothing to review except whether it worked.

So next week he does it again. Slightly different opinion. Same process.

The second one asks something smaller and much less flattering: has this chart earned a click?

That one has an answer. You can check it. Same way on a Monday morning, same way on a Friday when you’ve already handed back two trades and you’re annoyed. The question doesn’t care what mood you’re in, which is the entire reason it works.

Two ways to look at the same chart

He’s not smarter. He’s just picked a fight he can actually win.

The three gates

Three conditions. Always the same order.

Gate 1, trend. Which way am I allowed to lean? EMAs stacked, higher timeframe agreeing. With the direction. Never against it, no matter how stretched it looks.

Gate 2, entry. When am I allowed to click? Price has to come back into the zone, and then something has to confirm the turn. DeM Bars or Vol Entries, for me. Trend gives permission, signal gives timing. You react. You don’t predict.

Gate 3, risk. What happens when I’m wrong? Stop goes in before entry, sitting where the idea is properly dead. Size small and identical every time, and yes, that includes the ones that look free.

Count them. Three green, take it. One red, don’t.

Every chart runs the same three gates

People underrate the order. Gate 1 sitting first means you’re never hunting entries in a market you had no business being in. Gate 3 sitting last means the trade has to survive the risk question after it’s already got you interested, which is precisely the moment everyone quietly stops asking it.

It’s a destroyer, not a finder

This is the bit that takes longest to swallow.

The system doesn’t find trades. It kills them. You feed it a screen full of tempting charts and it deletes nearly all of them, and whatever crawls out the far end is what you’re allowed to touch.

Gate 1 kills chop, and everything you wanted to fade. Gate 2 kills the chase and the early guess, which between them have probably cost retail traders more money than any other two habits combined. Gate 3 kills anything without a clean invalidation, plus every trade where you were about to size up because this one felt different.

Where the trades die, and why that’s the point

Look how little survives. That’s not the system underperforming. That is the system.

A skipped trade costs nothing. A trade taken on two green gates costs you the loss, then the confidence, then usually the revenge trade an hour later. Skipped trades never show up in your P&L, so nobody credits them, and they’re still where most of the money quietly gets made.

What you actually get out of it

Your process stops moving around. Same three checks whether you’re up 4% on the month or down 2%. Bad weeks stop turning into worse ones.

Losing stops meaning you were wrong. Three gates green and it still lost? Then the system did its job and the market did something else. Cost of business. You’d be surprised what it does to your head to stop grading yourself on things you never controlled in the first place.

And your leaks become findable. Tag every trade with the gate you skipped and the pattern shows up fast. Most people don’t have three leaky gates. They have one.

Mine was Gate 2, for years. I’d nail the direction and then click before the confirmation because I couldn’t stand watching it go without me.

I still skip Gate 2 sometimes.

Not often now. But it goes the same way every time: I’ve been watching a chart for two days, it finally starts to move, and something goes now before the signal prints. Checked the last few times I did it. Worse entry than waiting would’ve given me. Every one.

The gates never stop being tempting to skip. You just get quicker at catching yourself mid-reach.

Mine is Gate 2. I’ve known that for years and it still costs me.

So here’s the homework, and it’s the same thing I had to do before any of this stuck. Go back through your last 20 trades. Not the P&L, the setups. For each one, mark which gates were genuinely green at the moment you clicked. No rounding up in your own favour.

📊 The Call I Made In June, Restated

Here’s the whole thesis in one line so nobody has to guess. Gold is a swing long for me anywhere between $3,800 and $4,200, to target year-end prices above $5,000.

Why I’m comfortable putting the actual band in the free read, when I usually gate levels: this isn’t a Trading Desk equity pick sitting on a single trigger. It’s a wide, months-long accumulation view on a macro asset, and I called it publicly in June already. Restating it costs nobody an edge. What it does is stop you talking yourself out of a setup that’s still valid because it “already moved.” It moved about $250 off the low. The target is more than $900 above here. That’s not a train you missed. That’s the first station.

Accumulation is the key word. This isn’t a chase-the-breakout trade where you need a perfect fill or you’re out. It’s a build-in-slowly, average-into-weakness, hold-for-the-move position. The band exists precisely so you don’t need to nail one price. Every tap toward the lower end is another chance to add, not a reason to panic. And gold spent the back half of June and most of July doing exactly what an accumulation phase looks like: chopping sideways above the level that mattered, shaking out the impatient, building the base for the next leg.

🤔 Why Gold Is Still Catching A Bid

The setup isn’t just a line on a chart. The macro underneath it is still pointing the same way it was in June.

Start with the Fed. It’s frozen. Rates are parked, the market’s pricing next to no cuts this year, and the forward guidance that used to tell you where policy was headed is gone. A central bank that can’t or won’t move, sitting on top of inflation that’s run above its 2% target for years now, is close to the ideal backdrop for gold. The metal doesn’t pay you anything, so its biggest enemy is high real yields. When inflation stays sticky and the Fed stays stuck, real yields stay capped, and gold’s opportunity cost stays low.

Then there’s the part that doesn’t show up in a single data print: the steady, unglamorous bid underneath the market. Central banks buying reserves. Investors who want an asset that isn’t anyone’s liability while the policy picture stays this murky. That flow doesn’t spike the tape on a Tuesday. It just keeps showing up on every dip, which is exactly why $3,800 held instead of cracking.

None of that is a promise. Gold can and will have ugly weeks. But the reason I drew the band where I did in June is the same reason I’m still comfortable with it now. The conditions that make gold worth accumulating haven’t changed. If anything the June low holding is the market confirming them for me.

📊 What Actually Happened

Uber told its community operations team on July 22 that it was cutting roughly 10% of the department. The stated reasons were to simplify operations, strengthen in-person collaboration, and embrace AI. Employees on the affected team who had been remote were also told to relocate to a hub office under the return-to-office policy.

The single cut is not the point. The pattern is.

→ 🔴 In July, it made this cut, its first workforce reduction directly linked to AI-driven efficiency.

Three moves in three months, each one pointing the same direction. That is not a one-off restructuring. That is a company telling you, in advance and out loud, that its cost base is about to bend.

🤔 Why This Matters More Than The Layoff Headline

For the whole AI cycle so far, the money has flowed one way. Companies buy the chips, rent the compute, hire the teams, and spend. AI has shown up on the income statement as an expense and on the balance sheet as capital expenditure. The question every serious investor has been asking underneath the hype is simple: when does this stop being a cost for the buyers and start being a profit?

A company cutting 10% of a labour-heavy department specifically to “layer AI on” is what the beginning of that answer looks like. Customer service is one of the most people-intensive, most automatable cost centres a platform business has. If AI can hold or improve service quality while the headcount that used to deliver it comes down, the result is not a press release. It is operating leverage. Revenue holds, cost falls, and the gap between them widens. That widening gap is margin, and margin expansion is what actually re-rates a stock over time. Not the announcement. The math underneath it.

And Uber will not be the last. Every megacap consumer-services and software business is staring at the same customer-service, support, and back-office cost lines, and every one of them now has a public template for touching them. The theme here is bigger than one ride-hailing company. It is the moment the market gets to start pricing AI as a margin input rather than only a spending line. 🧭 The Read This Week

When setups cluster inside a single sector, that’s usually just that sector having a moment. When they show up across markets that don’t move together, biotech and energy and currencies all at once, that’s a different signal. It tends to mean risk appetite is broadening out rather than crowding into one theme. It doesn’t tell you the market goes straight up from here. It tells you the opportunity set is widening, and that’s exactly when discipline matters most, because a wider opportunity set is also more chances to overtrade.

Here’s the part that ties them together. Almost none of these are chase-it-now trades. Most are waiting on a trigger: a break above a level a stock has already tapped and rejected, a daily close back above a moving average that hasn’t happened yet, a pullback into a zone that isn’t here yet. Sign 01: Losses feel like personal failure, not data.

When someone is building wealth, a loss is information. It tells them something about the market, their process, or their timing. It’s unwelcome, but it’s useful.

When someone is proving something, a loss is a verdict. It doesn’t just mean the trade didn’t work; it means something about them. Their worth, their capability, their right to be doing this at all. And that feeling doesn’t get processed quietly. It gets avenged.

In trading, this is where revenge trading comes from. The loss wasn’t just a bad trade; it was an accusation. And the next trade isn’t about finding an edge. It’s about getting even.

What it looks like: You close a losing trade and immediately start scanning for something to take back. The next entry isn't about the setup. It's about the score.

Sign 02: You care more about being right than being profitable.

There’s a version of stubbornness that’s dressed up as conviction. It holds a losing position not because the thesis is intact, but because closing it means admitting the call was wrong. And being wrong, publicly, to yourself, or to anyone watching, feels worse than the loss itself.

Wealth building is indifferent to being right. It only cares about the outcome. If the trade isn’t working and the reason you got in no longer exists, the position gets cut. Full stop.

But if the goal is validation, the position stays open. Because closing it ends the argument, and losing the argument is what can’t be tolerated.

What it looks like: You move your stop loss to give the trade more room. Not because the analysis changed, but because you can't face being wrong yet.

Sign 03: Wins feel like relief more than progress.

When you’re building wealth, a win is a building block. It compounds, it confirms the process, it moves you closer to a goal. The emotional response is measured, satisfaction, maybe, but not drama.

When you’re proving something, a win is a reprieve. The pressure lifts. The doubt quiets, temporarily. But because the underlying need hasn’t been addressed, it comes back. And the next trade carries the same weight as the last one.

This is why traders who are proving something can never quite relax into a good run. The wins don’t accumulate emotionally the way they do financially. Each session starts fresh with the same thing to prove.

What it looks like: A good week feels like you've bought yourself more time, not like you've made progress. The relief fades fast, and the pressure returns before the next session even opens.

You can't build wealth with a scorecard and a grudge. The market doesn't care what you're trying to prove, and it will keep reminding you until you stop.

How To Trade For Wealth Instead.

✅Get clear on what you’re actually building toward.

Not a feeling, a number, a timeline, a life. What does financial freedom actually look like for you? What does it allow you to do, stop doing, or choose? When the goal is concrete, the daily P&L stops feeling like a referendum on your worth and starts feeling like one data point in a longer story.

✅Separate your identity from your positions.

A losing trade is not a losing trader. A wrong call is not a wrong person. The moment you make your self-worth conditional on being right in the market, you’ve handed something precious to something indifferent. The market doesn’t know your name. Don’t let it write your story.

✅Measure your week by process, not outcome.

Did you follow the plan? Did you manage risk correctly? Did you take only the setups your system defines? If yes, that’s a good week, regardless of what the P&L says. Wealth is built by traders who execute well consistently, not by traders who win spectacularly and irregularly.

✅Ask yourself who you’re trading for.

Honestly. Is it for the life you want to build? Or is there someone, a doubter, a version of yourself, an old story, sitting in the background that you’re trying to silence? You don’t have to erase the answer. Just know it. Because what you’re trading for determines every decision you make when the pressure comes.
