It’s a rough time aboard the Read December. Let’s be honest. It’s been rough from the start of 2026. There have been too many disappearances of passengers and ports of interest. Your Captain has worked harder at finding passengers and a crew than he probably should, considering his circumstances. But, here we are, a rag-tag, motley slew of individuals all seeking something, whether it’s a laugh, a bit of art, a flash of wisdom, some sign of positive change in our world (the Deep Fix) or something deeper.

In short, the AI war has been a HUGE crack in the foundation of this place. If it hasn’t, then I am just oblivious to what is silencing and dividing people at Substack. But, if it IS the AI usage, then I am fairly helpless to resolve it, myself. I might as well be a drug addict pitching for a Say No campaign. I am guilty of being too weak of an artist to solely use my own hand-made art. I occasionally share some, mostly digital creations. But, I still cave and dabble in a bit of AI image generation. I am sorry for who that upsets. It is never my intention to drive anyone away with that.

Now then…

There’s another matter than has come to my attention in recent weeks: a lack of passenger participation. While you are not required to perform any crew duties, it would be nice if more of you gave, at the very least, more input. The suggestion box is getting dusty with cobwebs. The message boards in the corridors are bare except for a few curling Post Its I put there months ago. And, while I have a virtual crewwoman available, I’d like to see more human hands pitch in with ideas and maybe areas of expertise (skills, knowledge, experience, etc.).

I realize many come to Substack to be entertained and grab hold of something to read. Others are happy to see artwork without a museum or membership fee. And, still others with money burning holes in their pockets are okay with spending some “coin” to get even more out of those contributing content to this digital ocean. The power of scrolling compels you to move (or sit), feed and continue roaming.

The Read December and its mission for the Deep Fix could use some support. I’ve never asked for money, although I’ll not likely turn it down unless it comes from a crooked/shady source. But, what’s as valuable as money, most of the time, is what exists in your heads, your knowledge and your own problem-solving abilities. If you don’t want to be dedicated members of my crew, you are free to do as you please.

But, please consider giving a little more of yourselves in the near future…and beyond. Your Captain would appreciate and like to hear your thoughts. It’s certainly better than listening to hissing and thumping pipes from my control room and passing no one in the corridors. Heck. I’ve eaten so many meals alone; I wonder if any of you even eat or use the restrooms.

That about sums it up, for now. I wish I had bigger news of positive change in this world to give you. Before 2016, there was still much potential for that. And, before 2001, there was even more, and candy didn’t seem like the sad luxury it is now. When the world seems only good enough to give you the bare minimum and food worse than military rations (which actually are not all bad), it’s tough to be the change maker…alone. I’m looking for a few good crewmen. Are you game? And, if you’re not up to that task, just try to be more active aboard my ship…okay?

Chins up. Steady, now. The mission continues, regardless of its passengers and/or lack of crew. I haven’t given up the ship, yet. But, I’d sure love to know more of you are able to lend a hand and/or helpful input.

I’ve been blocked more times than I care to count since I arrived here, not that many months ago. Why? Heck if I know. Misunderstandings would be the general conclusion. Maybe they don’t like my AI-generated images. But, instead of working things out, people find it really easy to go into one of those special little menus and find the big red BLOCK button. Oh, it’s so easy and convenient! It doesn’t matter if you’re a genuine troll or just someone who got out of bed on the wrong side and let the wrong choice of words slip.

[Doesn’t anyone use any of the other options?…like MUTE? How many forgot what MUTE actually does?]

And then, not long ago, I found myself in a strange position which prevented me from leaving comments. Some sort of comment ban was placed upon me with a subtly suggestive red-lettered note that basically said READ THE FINE PRINT OF OUR CONTENT POLICY; YOU’VE BEEN SUSPENDED (GENTLY). I spent a couple of days just talking to myself and shaking my computer when it wouldn’t let me speak. Talk about your virtual ball and chain…….

Gee. Maybe if we let AI/ChatGPT polish our responses before we submit them, our words wouldn’t sting or cause as much confusion. Oh. But, too many already have their torches and forks ready to screw AI to the wall. So, forget that idea.

AnYwAy…all of that inspired me to (re)write this song. And, as the acronym goes…IYKYK.

"One" by Creed

[If you’re a Creed hater, you can leave the classroom, right now. :D Just give this a listen and think about it while you read what I have to say.]

The Rubik’s Cube...

Most people see it as a confounding puzzle/toy with colorful sides to lure you, to make you play with it. Some people make a game or race out of it. They try to “solve the cube” in record time and/or challenging ways. But, if you look at that cube another way, it’s racist. Or, rather, it’s a lesson about segregation and unity. At its start, the colors are divided. They each have their own side, their own place. You mix them up and think you have a hot mess that needs to be corrected. You think it needs some kind of order or solution, so you don’t just toss it in a junk drawer and forget it exists for a while. But, what if the real solution isn’t returning six colors to their original sides (or making letters like A, H, O and I, as I used to do)? What if the best solution is getting all of the colors on all sides? I bet that would take far less time than it does to “correct” the cube.

Together Forever (4Kids Pokemon)

So, with that song in your mind, I’d like to know…

Which Pokémon would you be unable to release back into the wild or trade away?

I could be here a while, trying to list every creature from all the various generations of games. But, but a quick list does come to mind rather easily.

• Ninetales [The most beautiful fox I’ve ever seen; both the original fire and ice/fairy versions are divine. Between Ninetales and Rapidash, I could easily fill a team of six with lousy odds of being champion but great odds of being one of the best looking and loveable FEMALE teams.]

• Rapidash [Just try to pry one of these away from me...FEMALES, at least. You can have the stallions. I keep close watch over every mare and raise according to best stats; meaning the ones with the worst stats just sort of hang around in the stables being appreciated for their beauty.]

• Wartortle [Of all the original starter Pokémon, this second form of Squirtle is probably my favorite next to Bulbasaur. It just looks like a creature ready to defend and partner with me in a fight.]

• Bulbasaur [I’m not a fan of Ivysaur and Venusaur; I’d like to create some regional variation of those. But, Bulbasaur stole my heart the moment I knew it was a starter. It just has that cute Chiapet look to it. I truly thought it must have been the first Pokémon created until I learned about Rhydon. Again, you might talk me out of a male Bulbasaur. But, any females I retain cautiously. However, like Wartortle, I’m okay with having a male Bulbasaur as a teammate.]

• Dragonair [“She” falls into that early category of versatile beauty. Dragonair can learn a variety of moves to cover various types in battle, even though it doesn’t get that “STAB” benefit. But, as a travel companion and generally great inspiration, Dragonair is a fine FEMALE muse. Dratini is kind of a pocket version—which is probably why it makes sense as a Pokémon—and Dragonite is a less appealing cuddler.]

• Lopunny [One of the rare Normal types to win my heart…FEMALES, anyway. If you have a male Lopunny, you can keep it or let him go. This is one of those special creatures that does not appeal to me if it’s a male. The same goes for Goldeen, Dragonair, Ninetales, Rapidash, etc. I’m only interested in pretty females.]

• Scizor [When I first saw Scizor, I didn't think I’d like it much because it’s basically turning a living, breathing insect into some kind of cyborg or robot. But, once I was able to hone and put one on a championship team, I learned to love this shiny red sportscar. I named one female Portia for that reason. Gender is not critical, but females are definitely favored. Males I treat like prize fighters.]

• Geodude [This is also one of the very first Pokémon to steal my heart. If Geodude had been a starter, I probably would’ve picked it just to have this tough, sturdy meatball with muscle on my team. Geodude had one of the coolest Burger King keychain toys, when this whole craze pretty much started. I can juggle both Geodudes and Geodudettes; I’m not particular. Thus I am more likely to be open to trade/release one, eventually…but I still adore every one I catch.]

• Jigglypuff [I blame the cartoon series for turning this otherwise lackluster pink cat head into a loveable audience-seeking talent. I’ve learned how to turn what seems like a weak, feeble creature into a fairy “tank” that can be both tough and delightful. If female Lopunnys came in Wigglytuff colors, or if Wigglytuff had a Lopunny-like variant…that might be the perfect mix. I think MALE Lopunny and Jigglypuff should come in some other color/form. I mean….we have gender-special forms for creatures like Nidoran and Unpheasant; why can’t we have them for other rabbits and other creatures that just don’t look right when labeled male?]

• Goldeen [FEMALES ONLY. I will not have a male Goldeen anywhere in my collection unless I need an ugly Seaking to complete the damn Pokedex. Goldeen is definitely a prize fish with lousy moves and odds of winning anything other than a beauty contest.]

• Lurantis (So far, probably the prettiest of bug types and capable of being a serious teammate contender. But, again, FEMALES only. Tsareena is also a fun and feminine Grass type, but Lurantis feels like a more versatile and balanced partner.)

• Purrloin/Liepard [‘One of the finest felines ever drawn! For a long time, I thought nothing could top Persian. Liepard does just that. There are other decent cats to collect/find. However, Liepard holds a special place in my heart…even if the name and latest limits of Dark types kinda suck.]

• Articuno [If I have to pick a glorious bird, it would be hard to top Articuno. “She” is not one I would put much faith in to win a fast fight. But, in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (Red), I would not have survived the Celebi stage without her Powder Snow (and a belt which reverses attacks received). In any game where Articuno is available—namely Sword/Shield—I take Articuno with me wherever I can. “She” keeps me calm and cool and reassures me when I feel alone.]

• Talonflame [Another fine bird; Talonflame is tough to top in terms of looks. Skills may be about as limited as just about every other bird. I mean…how many birds can you teach Steel Wing, Aerial Ace and some kind of diversion or team-speed-boosting tactic? Regardless, Talonflame just exudes power and beauty. “She” gives me courage.]

• Noctowl [I’m not entirely Noctowl needs a place on this list because they can be quite common in certain games, including its origin space, Pokemon Gold/Silver. But, what makes Noctowl special is that I am pretty sure I invented “her.” Just about any time I catch and focus on one, I name HER Athena.]

• Suicune [Like Articuno, I am partial to this bizarre sea dog? for its unique beauty, compared to its kin Entei and Raikou. Suicune sort of reminds me of Tiger of the Wind from Monster Rancher; a trusted partner (with a rather lousy, limited move selection).]

• Muk [Call me weird, but Muk is one of those toxic friends you actually might learn to love…if you don’t think about it as sewage or anything else gross. When I look at Muk, I see a purple blob of silly putty. “She” is like a big Ditto. Muk can be quite fun and versatile to train.]

• Gastly/Haunter [I’m not a fan of Gengar. But, the other two forms (thus far) have grown on me. There are other loveable spooks. But, Gastly/Haunter were the first to get my attention. I just like how Haunter seems “grabby.” What could “she” do with those hands?]

• Tangela [The one Pokémon that, from the start, looked like a “Fry Guy” from McDonald’s. I just can’t resist when I see one. ‘Same goes for Oddish, usually. And, Oddish/Bellossom has more potential in battle. But, Tangela is just a mysterious muse.]

• Sawsbuck [That’s Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring (SAWS) Buck, in case you didn’t know. I haven’t even caught any of these, yet, and I love them. If I start catching these, I’ll likely fill a box in no time, trying to pick out the best ones. The simple fact that these deer come in seasonal variations is a treat. I definitely want a set and favor the autumn version. Need I repeat…FEMALES only.]

I think I’ll stop there. But, you get the idea.

So, after watching a NUMBER of “reactions” to the latest Street Fighter movie, I realized a few things.

5. Too many people say the exact same thing and act like they’re the first people online to review a movie trailer. You’re not that special…especially if you’re going to say what others say and…

4. Too many people waste as much time telling viewers to LIKE, subscribe and help with their “Patreon.” If you’re telling viewers they’re valued just to rack up numbers, you’re just a digital farmer, and I don’t like you.

3. Some people spend more time on their high-tech animated intros and exits than they do actually saying anything of interest! Honestly. You’ve got a fancy animated and/or cinematic intro to your segment, and it’s more interesting and longer than your actual opinion. I don’t count wasted time on breathing and covering your face as content. [So, going back to #2, no. I won’t.]

2. Some people have no idea what they are even discussing. What’s really painful is to see someone either too young or too removed from the concept to even have a sensible statement; there’s one rather vapid-looking blonde who looks like she had plastic surgery and is just twisting her hair like Cammy in the movie as she asks her partner what’s the movie about…in a video commentary on the movie trailer!

Hi. I’ve never played the games or seen the movies. But, let’s check this out because everyone else is doing a reaction video. So, you’ll surely get something out of me watching the exact same trailer you will see dozens of others watch without any knowledge or interest in the content.

1. FIGHT! [There. I said it. Now, let’s get ready to rumble before you develop a killer instinct, unleash your bloody roar and exact primal rage on my bare knuckles.]

This first batch is essentially me, watching a fight between A) Cammy and Chun Li. B) Ken and Blanka. C) Ken and Ryu. In some images, I make a cheap attempt at looking like Guile, intentionally putting his flag tattoo as a badge on a hoodie. Because of the questionable inclusion of so many beards in the movie, I decided to have a little fun with that.

If you have not seen the trailer, yet, you may not grasp (most of) the humor.

I staged these this way because that’s basically what you see for every REACTION video on YouTube. The host makes an exaggerated shocked or amused face and then creates a fade to divide that face from an image from the movie. It takes someone special to come up with something more unique, and I appreciate everyone who does. SHOW SOME ORIGINALITY, PEOPLE! YOU HAVE TO EITHER KNOW THE MATERIAL OR DO SOMETHING SPECIAL TO GET THAT AUDIENCE TALLY YOU SO DESIRE! Geez.

And from there my ideas drifted away from the computer screen.

I’ll likely add more and probably have to do some gallery-space adjustment as the months roll by until the movie debuts OCTOBER 16th. So be sure to check back.

Until then, I’ve got next game. And, I’m playing as Chun Li. Okay?

[KO! You win!]

1. Personally, I’d like to ignore the first few seconds, which seem like filler repeating what’s about to be shown. It seems senseless to repeat.

2. The first piece of music has a distinct hip-hop sound (which has been associated with Tu Pac and probably has some connection to “50 Cent” being in the movie). I’m inclined to think this is a marketing strategy to appeal to certain audiences, which will make more sense as the music for the trailer changes. I don’t particularly associate hip-hop music with Street Fighter. [And, it’s both amusing and cringe-worthy to see the “reactions” of white (Caucasian) men to that opening music, as if they’re all trying to look hip and into it. Notice few if any mention Tu Pac the way other folks do.] I also think the music might…just might…be related to a character some have already noticed missing from the “Super” roster, namely Deejay. [‘More on him in just a bit.]

3. One of the first visuals we get is Chun Li traveling to India to “recruit” Dhalsim for a tournament of fighters from around the world. At least one of the “reaction” givers noted how Chun Li’s presence in the trailer seems very similar to Raiden in Mortal Kombat going around the world to collect fighters for a tournament. [How convenient two films in the same year would try such a plot. And, shame on Street Fighter for pitching what Mortal Kombat did first (back in 1995).] I noticed that, too.

4. Let me clarify something the “reaction” givers failed to mention/notice. In the very beginning of the trailer, you see an arena with a Bison statue and banner. But, it’s the SECOND arena to appear that shows the banner on a different building with the date 1993 on it. So, keep in mind some fights seen in the trailer may not be from the “present” tournament/timeline.

After being the first glimpses of the lovely Chun Li and surprisingly handsome Dhalsim, we see a few more splashy images of Guile, Cammy, Vega, Balrog and…who’s that little blond guy who seems very exuberant with his mouth always open for some reason? Oh. Some of you younger folks and those who don’t do a little research might not recognize this guy from the original Street Fighter arcade game. Hi. His name is Joe. Yo. [And, I’m a lil jealous of Cody Rhode’s costume in this opening sequence!] There’s also a ring announcer character with whom I am not familiar because I did not keep up with the sequels to SF2.

6. Ken Masters, the perpetual #2 to Ryu, who is the “lone wolf” and “hero” of the Street-Fighter story (not Guile, as the 1994 film has you…uh…see), quickly defeats a masked luchador (from a sequel I have yet to play but who I vaguely know from images I’ve seen from the later games). [If you really want to get a grip on the characters Ken and Ryu, I recommend watching the animated movie that came out in the mid-1990s.] Notice Ken is not wearing the red outfit (gi) he wore as he danced down the aisle to the arena stage only a short time ago. He’s wearing shorts…shorts that look very similar to those worn by the final boss of Street Fighter (One) and the second last boss before Bison in Street Fighter Two. Sagat is also supposedly missing from this new movie. Could there be a hidden explanation in Ken wearing his shorts?

7. Ken quickly celebrates his easy victory in the corner of the ring and gets a PERFECT! This is something that happens in the game when you win a fight without losing stamina. For someone like Ken, who lacks Ryu’s discipline and serious attitude, being “perfect” just feeds his showboat ego, which helps explain what comes next…his downfall. [There are a few uses of the concept “what goes up must come down” throughout the trailer, showing how someone seeming to rise in fame can just as quickly be taken down.]

8. Just before we see and hear Chun Li call Ken a sideshow, we catch a glimpse of a mustached man rooting for Ken. This is Dan, a character added to the Street Fighter roster in the Alpha games. He’s considered a “joke” fighter who tries very hard to mimic Ryu/Ken. It’s convenient that he first appears here when Chun Li calls out Ken for making a fool of himself.

9. Ken is featured as a part of an MTV spectacle. This is just the first tip of the hat to the 1990s, when Street Fighter 2 really took off to launch the franchise. It also allows the somewhat ridiculous concept of trashing a car (a bonus game between fights within Street Fighter 2) to have some sensible placement in the story. It’s all part of Ken’s championship party. But…is Ken really champion?…of anything? [You may have to understand how Ken was one of the only two optional characters to play in the original Street Fighter arcade game. And, still, Ryu was considered the primary hero. In a way, Ken is like Luigi to Mario. Mario gets all of the attention for a long time. Luigi is kind of a sideshow. Who gets featured on the cover of Street Fighter 2? Ryu (and Blanka…and Chun Li). Not Ken.]

10. Chun Li says the tournament (to which she is about to explain she’s gathering fighters for) is Ken’s chance at redemption. But, there’s more to redemption in this movie than just Ken getting something from…who? Ryu. If you watch the anime/animated movie from the 1990s, you’ll see how Ken is divided between chasing some “unfinished business” with Ryu, his former training partner/friend from when he went to pursue his passion for the martial arts and a relationship with a beautiful blonde woman who appears as his fiancé/bride in the original SF2 game ending. He is hasty to get what he wants, unlike Ryu who slowly roams the world in pursuit of greater purpose. And, when he cannot top his buddy/rival Ryu, Ken is pulled toward an early retirement and the possibility of marriage, “settling down.“ Ken never feels satisfied with fighting Ryu because he never finds that edge to be better and actually claim victory. When you play as Ken in the original Street Fighter 2, Ken feels some relief for winning a tournament and decides it’s okay to propose to his fiancé. And, luckily for him, she accepts his proposal. Actually, in the anime movie, she “considers” his proposal after he almost kills her by losing focus while driving his sweet red Porsche.

11. Now, at this point, most reviewers of the trailer get hung up on “Fitty Cent” giving Ken (in his red two-piece, again) the KO, which causes most if not all of them to miss the line from Ken. “Is Ryu going to show?” This might seem like a pointless line thrown in…but I think there’s a subtle little message hidden in that. Is Ryu going to show? If he does, then the tournament will SHOW RYU to KEN. Sho-ryu-(to)-Ken. It’s the damn rising dragon punch, people! Shoryuken! And, as that line is delivered, look closely to see how the rain moves UP past Ryu’s face while falling DOWN Ken’s face. I’m inclined to say this is a subtle visual cue to Ryu’s rise to fame/power and Ken’s descent. That’s one for you English/Literature teachers out there.

12. Now, there’s another subtle visual message I think most will miss that comes in this same “neon” fight scene. Ryu smashes Ken’s face into a brick wall three times. I don’t know if it’s the third game in which they first appear. But…Ryu and Ken WERE added to the SMASH BROS. roster. And, in various stories, they call each other brothers. Could that face-smashing be a little nod to another game series? Hmm? Clever; right? You didn’t see that coming. [And then we get that sweet roll throw these two guys like to use in the games.]

13. Ryu, who I did not recognize AT ALL with his haggard hair and beard (because I have only rarely seen a glimpse of his change of appearance after SF2 and am surprised he ever gives up the white training suit) says he’s not currently on a path of combat. Why? I mean…this is a fighting-game movie with him at the center. Well…as you hopefully will soon see (and possibly learn if you watch other footage of his story), he’s kind of steering away from fighting to avoid unleashing a darkness hidden within himself. He’s kind of like Bruce Banner from Marvel Comics trying to avoid turning into the Hulk. As the anime movie explains, Ryu possesses so much potential power that Bison wants him most of all for his special world-domination plot. In a way, Bison’s organization is Team Rocket, and Ryu is Ash’s pikachu. [‘Bet you didn’t see that comparison, either.]

14. As Chun Li kicks some dark sense into Ryu, we get a peek at a photo that shows a rather young and clean-cut Ryu with Ken in different outfits…outfits we haven’t seen since the 1994 live-action movie. Yes. That is what the Ryu and Ken of that movie wore. [I swear…when they cut back to Ryu’s dejected and slightly bloody face, I thought he was a member of Linkin Park. I apologize for not knowing Andrew Koji. …But I don’t apologize for not recognizing a character who never quite looked Japanese to me, anyway.]

15. Ah. Notice the music change. Now, we shifted from hip-hop/rap to what seems to be kryptonite to the same viewers who loved the first piece of music. Hmm. Isn’t that interesting. Why would a trailer feature two distinctly different pieces of music, one that appeals and one that turns away? Well, it sure widens the audience potential; doesn’t it? Not everyone likes one type of music; so rather than pass off a movie soundtrack with Vanilla Ice as the main feature, they include two very different pieces of music to appeal to different audiences. Some might go so far as to say if the movie is lacking in a certain casting…culture…element, you might try using music to draw them back into the fold. [‘Pied Piper, people. You’ve been played by the Pied Piper. Subliminal advertising.]

The second piece of music…is a 1990s song by the Four Non Blondes. A casual listener could associate the lyrics with the promotion of movies in general and say this is just a cheap choice which may simply be asking viewers what’s the plot here. But, once you see Ken singing karaoke…alone…it begins (hopefully) to become more clear that this isn’t just a random song choice. Why is Ken singing so sadly, alone? Gee. If you pay attention to the whole trailer—spoiler alert—he and Ryu once sang together…you know, like buddies in that photograph we saw just a moment ago. This isn’t just Ken being sad because he couldn’t top Ryu. He’s sad because he misses his sparring and karaoke partner, who has “gone off the grid.” The two “brothers” choose different paths, and absence makes the heart of Ken grow sadder. Also note the lyrics mention many years of trying to reach a pinnacle (the top of that hill of hope). THAT is Ken’s failure to become champion which he is struggling to accept/get past.

As reviewers of the trailer question the music choice, it got me thinking…there’s a scene in this movie that seems to take place at a nightclub. There was a nightclub in the first live-action film. And, there was a Deejay. What if this nightclub has a DJ to represent the Deejay of Super Street Fighter 2?

16. [I got a bit ahead of details in the trailer with that last item…because the music is a complex key to the puzzle of this story.] Now, this is where a very brief scene is shown which may only be explained when we see the movie…unless one of you can help explain it for me. We see a savage street or parking lot littered with unhappy people and a burning car. One brute throws a trash can at someone getting up on top of a truck. What is this? Where is this? Who is getting clobbered?

[My first thought was that the PALE HAIRED MAN was Guile taking a hit for trying to police the streets…kind of like Jean Claude’s Guile did in the first live-action movie, when he drives that ridiculous tank with two big missiles attached through the side of a building. Some say this is a glimpse of Metro City from the Final Fight games. I noticed the setting kind of resembles a stage for one of the fighters from the first Street Fighter…or possibly Sodom’s or Birdie’s stage in the alpha games. I also wonder if the guy getting hit isn’t Guile’s deceased teammate Charlie; maybe that’s a flashback. Considering how goofy Cody’s Guile appears to be when he’s actually speaking in the trailer, it’s possible he does something really stupid at this point in the movie and gets knocked down by the thugs in the scene.]

17. The next shots include a glimpse of the roaming Ryu on his on-going quest for wisdom/greater purpose and Chun Li riding a horse to meet with Zangief. The latter gives me serious Legend of Zelda vibes. ‘Anyone else get that feeling? And then, we see Ken doing his sad solo before the result of Chun Li’s mission brings Ryu and Ken back together. [Oh…the timing of that song lyric is PERFECT, when Ken loses his cool and flings himself at Ryu. Enjoy the cheap laughs from Ryu putting Ken “in his place.” You see what they did there? Ken is getting “put in his place” in his own apartment…I think. Aahh…didn’t see that one, either, did ya? Did I just HADOKEN! your mind?]

18. We see what looks like a tornado at the center of a grim-looking city. [And, not one of the “reaction” videos I watched seemed to identify this. Didn’t ANYONE play Street Fighter Alpha 3?…or maybe even one of the earlier Alphas?] I only know this scene from my recent play of the Game Boy version of Street Fighter Alpha 3; it’s the “storm” the heroes stop when they defeat Bison’s team (which includes one of the other characters in this movie, the young woman who resembles Cammy, known as Juli—spoiler alert—the one Chun Li clobbers before giving her new Legendary line. [See what I just did there? Legendary line? Haw-haw-haw!]

19. The next few bits are just little teases for who and what’s coming. We get our first glimpse of the actual M. Bison (rear view); no big deal. Ken gets a little more vain and silly. Ryu gives himself a haircut as he gets back into tournament shape (for the next “game”). Chun Li gets undressed…EEERRRUH?! WHY does Chun Li get naked and enter a sauna/shower (possibly a public bath house if they combine the anime movie with Honda’s stage). In the anime movie, there is a Legendary scene in which Chun Li thinks she is safe at home to take a shower, only to be surprised by a vile and vain Vega who makes a mess of her before she summons the inner strength and rage needed to wash him out of her hair.

20. We see a fire dancer before we get our second good look at Dhalsim flexing. On one hand, it seems like a subtle clue to Dhalsim’s fire power. But, Ming Na Wen dressed up as a masked dancer on a rope/chain to get closer to Bison’s henchmen in the previous live-action film.

21. Guile delivers a fast and budget version of his famous flash kick to Vega shortly before Cammy makes a lame reference to Chun Li’s legs (which you can either take as a confession from the makers of the film for being unable to provide true Chun Li thighs in the film or as a setup for the Chun Li visuals that follow, where she shows off what she can do with those legs).

Now, you may be wondering why Vega seems to be getting quite a bit of punishment in this movie…in this trailer. I have a theory. In the original design of Street Fighter 2, the names of the four bosses were different from what they became in the (SNES) American version. The big bad guy with the red hat was originally named Vega. M. Bison was originally the boxer who became Balrog; M. Bison was a cheap switch for Mike Tyson. The guy with the claws, Vega, was originally Balrog. [And, NO ONE knows why? I watched a bunch of people question the name in YouTube videos. PEOPLE! The name is BALROG. Break that down. BALL-ROGUE. He’s a rogue/ninja who rolls into a ball across the floor! BALL ROGUE…BALROG!] So…it’s my guess that, maybe, everyone attacks (Vega) because, in a way, he’s mistaken for the main villain (because of the name change). HE’S Vega? I thought the other guy was Vega. You see what I mean?

22. Chun Li puts down Juli like a brat who won’t go to bed at the right time. She delivers that great line with all her fatal fury. [Ha.] And then, we see Cammy firing a rocket launcher at a van. That might make little to no sense to the casual viewer. But, if you go back, again, to that live action “flop” from the 1990s, you’ll see Kylie Minogue fire a rocket launcher at the enemy army near the end of the film. And, the van? Could that be Ming Na Wen’s news van, which some thought was a joke occupied by three jokes? The rocket launcher BLOWS Ming Na Wen’s cover. Get it? [Cuz—spoiler alert unless you know the games/anime—Chun Li is supposed to be undercover to get close to Bison.]

23. Next comes my second big question mark in this trailer. Even I am not entirely sure what we are seeing. There’s a brief return to Ken about to face someone in a fight, with Dan at his side. And then…there’s a shot of someone who looks like a young Ryu in Ken’s outfit, stuck in jail cell. Is this…

A) Ryu’s dark half fighting to get out? Dressed in red like everyone’s bad half of their conscience in cartoons.

B) Young Ryu after that karaoke night with Ken goes bad somehow, landing him in prison (which could be yet another throwback to the original live-action film when Guile has Ryu and Ken placed in the same prison as Sagat and Vega to learn the location of Bison’s lair).

….or C) A completely different character in the Street Fighter series, possibly Guy?

24. Zangief delivers one of the moves that will live on in people’s memory as possibly the best use of modern tech to cheat reality. The look on Ken’s face is priceless. Ryu delivers one of his famous hurricane kicks to E. Honda in the bathhouse (which, as I said before, may be linked to Chun Li undressing). There’s a quick—really quick—shot of a prison riot with Ryu fighting in the middle (again, a nod to the first live-action film’s prison scene). Guile delivers the “BOOM” to a not-having-it Ryu at the club where we saw the former kick Vega through a wall. [I think that may be a funny way to avoid using his actual Sonic Boom. It may also be where Guile witnesses what comes at the end of this trailer.] And then, Chun Li pounds Vega into hamburger with her lightning kick (which, again, is linked to her infamous animated movie fight with Vega, who rudely violates her privacy at bedtime).

25. Pay attention to the brief shot of M. Bison making freaky eyes in some girl’s face. Yes. I said some GIRL because that’s young Chun Li, when Bison first visits her family and takes her father away. [For Chun Li, it was the worst day of her life. But, for Bison, it was Tuesday…]

26. We see our first CG fire blast. Balrog Cent injects a line that makes some people chuckle for some reason. Vega snaps his fingers for some reason….notice this is the exact same scene we just left with Bison’s face; the same little girl is on the left. Could this be the switch of roles/names for the big villain? Vega? Bison? Bison? Vega?

27. And, the rest is really mostly eye candy.

You get a quick look at a younger Ken singing karaoke with someone who could pass for Jackie Chan. Oh, that’s young Ryu. This is the karaoke night that leads Ken to his sad solo, singing the same song. But…could Ryu’s resemblance to Jackie Chan be a slight nod to the live-action movie City Hunter, in which Jackie Chan turns into a couple of the Street Fighter characters during a strange fight scene?

Who is Bison throwing across the room/building? It looks like some civilian wearing khaki clothes. But, he’s a desert trooper from the first live-action film. [Just go back to the old film and look for that army.]

Aaand, we finally see Blanka in all of his…eh…silly shake-it-off glory…with a beard…and a necklace. I don’t know. This isn’t the Blanka I used to play. And, the trailer doesn’t even slow down enough to get a clear view, which seems like a way of saying the film makers weren’t confident in their CG results. [I have rather low expectations for Blanka in this film.

Let me pause and jump back to an earlier concept I discussed: Redemption. This film is getting redemption for what many consider a first live-action failure. The bar dropped so low after the previous live-action film that there isn’t much high expectation, allowing this film to be almost as bad as it can be. And, thus, many are calling it out as “cheesy” and “bizarre” and saying crazy stuff like “that’s what Street Fighter always was. [STREET FIGHTER IS NOT CHEESY OR CRAZY! It’s culturally significant.] But, obviously, fans want it to succeed.

28. Guile earns an eye roll for letting us know they are going to fit a HADOKEN into this movie. I could have done without the corny delivery. But, it seems to make some people laugh. And…wait. Who’s that sitting next to Guile? I see a black guy wearing a hat with Bison’s colors and logo. He reminds me of someone who worked for Bison in the first live-action film. Hmm. Who was that? Could it be…Deejay?! [Boom.]

29. Finally, we get Ryu charging his famous fireball attack, the HADOKEN! (wave motion fist), rather slowly. Some complain about this. But, go look at the opening of Super Street Fighter 2. It’s a slow build, unlike what you get in the game. I presume the gameplay made it quicker to avoid Ryu being stuck charging, unlike Samus Aran in Smash Bros, who needs time to charge her blaster for little benefit.

Ken shouts, “Throw it, Ryu!” Why? Why would Ken want Ryu to hit him with the chi fireball? Could it be:

A) Ken is brainwashed, like he was in the anime movie, and needs Ryu to free him.

B) RYU has HIS memory distorted by Bison. Now, Bison, posing as Ken, coaxes Ryu to use his greatest power to achieve the dark force Bison would love to use for world domination.

C) Ken pushes Ryu to knock him (Ken) out after the two have a dispute. Ken knows he can’t win and probably has done something to upset Ryu. So, Ken pushes Ryu until the latter can seal the coffin of fame on the latter. This could be when Ryu finally ends Ken’s chance at a championship title.

And, there you have it. A PERFECT! trailer breakdown for a near-perfect movie trailer.

You see? MANY LAYERS! It’s rather brilliant.

The Spark of the 1990s

It was 1992…or was it 1993? I was in a dark time in my life when I stumbled upon an SNES demo station at a Boston (department) Store. And, what was the latest game available to try? Street Fighter 2. I was a teenager struggling to sort myself out and find my voice after a near-death experience. A part of me was very angry, wanting to lash out at something (the same part of me that, a few years earlier, found solace in games like Double Dragon). And, for some reason, this game called to me.

The moment I saw a variety of characters from around the world (represented before the latest craze of so many trying to represent every nationality in a single film, even when characters don’t come with those nationalities), I was hooked. You could say Street Fighter 2 was the spark that got me interested in exploring the world and interacting with people of different nations.

I’d seen a few other fighting-type games that were very Asian, let’s say; there was definitely not some remotely creepy bald guy from India who could fire punches and kicks like Luffy in One Piece (or Plastic Man, a better childhood reference) nor an American soldier who could pretty much outperform every other character with his long legs and insane ability to repel just about every attack with a flip (flash) kick. There were no other creatures like Blanka who could not only be savage with biting but also electrocute opponents. [That detail, I’ll admit, wasn’t exciting me as much as other character moves. I prefer to use Dhalsim “noogies” and not electrocute someone. But, the shock defense definitely came in handy when an opposing player became frustrating.]

I remember pretty much taking control of the demo station and slowly driving other kids away so I could have total freedom to try every character…except Ryu and Ken. I didn’t know why they looked so much alike, but I found them boring. They wore karate-student uniforms? [Yawn. I had already had my fill of The Karate Kid and Bruce Lee by then.] So, I didn’t bother with either of them.

Well, that’s not true because I remember playing as them at least once just to hear those infamous garbled shouts. I remember thinking they were cursing instead of what I’ve learned is supposed to be actual Japanese for things like “wave motion fist” and “rising dragon fist.” So, for maybe a hot minute, I gave the two protagonists a try, tried to figure out what they were saying and then moved on to mastering Dhalsim (who I insisted upon being called DAHL-ISM like a fool, thinking his name was some kind of religion I had heard about in high school—idiot that I was), Guile and Blanka (who I fail to see as a respectable representative of Brazil?).

The other key detail I remember clearly about that night was a dad coming up to me and asking my opinion of what I thought was the MUST HAVE game of that holiday season. I remember him softly snorting in response to my high praise of Street Fighter 2 and seeing him go right to the sales counter nearby to buy a copy for his son. It was a rare moment of me actually being an influencer.

It wasn’t until a few years later that I finally had the money to buy my own SNES and get a copy of Street Fighter 2. My heart was leaping out of my chest when I popped that cartridge into the game system. I was all set to dive right back into loving Guile, Dhalsim and Blanka…and then…I looked at that female fighter, Chun Li.

I don’t know why…but now SHE was calling to me. I think I must have seen a magazine or strategy guide somewhere that had featured images of her story shown when you beat Bison.

And learning this buttoned-up “princess” of China could let her hair down was enough to make me see value in her. She wasn’t a strictly traditional woman. And, once I got past that shrill, somewhat annoying laugh of hers, I started to enjoy her flips, kicks (her delightful stage music) and those devastating mid-air throws that won me many fights. While I had done fairly well learning a few of the moves used by the guys with the longest range (with their limbs), it was Chun Li who seemed to encourage me to master her move set the most. [I still cannot seem to master the “spinning bird kick,” however.] Her quest to be the “strongest” (woman) also inspired me, even as a guy playing as a woman. I WANTED her to win and prove herself better than those two guys getting all of the attention, not to mention the “evil” jerks who could do something like kill her father and laugh so menacingly when they beat you to a pulp.

But, the joys of Street Fighter 2 were short-lived. The rush to make variations of a good thing eventually eroded my budding interest.

Seeing Chun Li with earrings in Super Street Fighter 2 turned me off a bit. [I know. It seems like a small detail. But, it bothered me. She looked even more “bottled up" in the sequel. She didn’t need a goofy bubble-like fireball attack, either. And, her second victory story wasn’t as delightful as her first.] I also did not like how Ryu and Guile looked in the sequel. Ryu took for-ev-er to charge that HADOKEN! in the opening (and not once ever looked Japanese to me). And, Guile just seemed to become more annoying and less dominant; his kicks didn’t seem to come with the same power and range as they did in the original SF2.

I did, however, get a little thrill from seeing newcomers T. Hawk, Fei Long, Deejay and Cammy. I think Cammy was the best and least creepy addition (though Deejay was more fun and easier to control). She came with the most story.

One of the things with the newer games that bothered me was how victory poses often showed the male characters with creepy hollow eyes. In T. Hawk’s case, he looked like his eyes turned into zits ready to pop. [Gross.] That didn’t exactly make me want to win with these guys. I loved how Fei Long was so much like Bruce Lee…but something about this guy reminded me of a nemesis of my own youth and thus made playing Fei Long challenging. [‘Gotta love that flaming rising kick, though.]

There was a brief period when I was so inspired by the advertising for Super Street Fighter 2 (and the Final Fight games, which were grabbing my attention at the same time) that I began drawing up new characters and move sets of my own, hoping I’d get the chance to speak with someone at Capcom and make them a reality. And then….the “Turbo” phase began. Every game had to be made faster and slightly different in a new cartridge. Before Pokémon mastered the craze of pushing players to buy multiple games to complete a Poke Dex, there were games like Street Fighter that put out subtle and—in my opinion—annoying variations just to tempt and tease people into spending more money than I was already willing to afford. I had about zero interest in buying four or more games when I was perfectly happy with the first two.

And THEN the ALPHA craze began. Suddenly there were prequels to what was a sequel to Street Fighter (One), which I had missed because I didn’t get to spend much time at arcades. Seeing Chun Li in yet another different and less appealing outfit…not seeing the Guile I liked in “the first game” but his deceased friend Charlie, instead, with that even more unappealing hairstyle of his and that odd safety vest…no. Other than taking a slight interest in Rose, Sodom/Katana and Sakura (I don’t know why I didn’t notice Guy from Final Fight until Alpha 3), I thought Capcom was really milking this thing instead of moving forward. Why couldn’t there just be a Street Fighter 3?…until there was.

But, by the time they finally put out Street Fighter 3, I was done. I had experienced what was quickly slapped with a foul stench at the movie theater, what is referred to by too many as the Jean Claude Street Fighter movie, when it should be identified as the Kylie Minogue and/or Ming Na Wen Street Fighter movie because both women are total treats in that thing! [Raul Julia as Bison, Zangief and Vega were also decent. That whole bringing Bison back to life bit near the end might have been cheesy to some people, but I thought it was brilliant.] Then I heard about the hate for the arcade game based upon that (bad) movie. Hearing so many boos, I thought it was a good time to tap out and leave Street Fighter behind.

Not long after I left Street Fighter’s world, Mortal Kombat became all the rage in tabloid news. There was SO much talk about the violence, the gore, the fatalities, the desire of parents to ban the game(s). This was said to be a game rival for Street Fighter. But, it seemed to get my attention after I put Chun Li (sadly) aside. And, from the start, I had little to no interest. Sure, I wanted to learn the tricks to pulling off those special finishing moves. [I’m a sucker for secret button combos.] But, I didn’t want to murder anyone or rip them apart. Sure there were female characters to compete with my love for Chun Li. [Sigh…Katana. Sonya’s not bad, either…just a bit silly.] But, was some new beauty worth the price of my soul? Nope! So, I passed on Mortal Kombat…at least, until I had “thicker skin.”

I think it was after I tapped out of Mortal Kombat and took a slight detour through other fighting games (Tekken, Bloody Roar, Dead or Alive, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct, etc., etc.) that I heard about a “dark Ryu” and Akuma story. Finding out that even my old friend Street Fighter was digging deeper into the evil pool (not just creepy M. Bison and his henchmen), I was even more upset. I felt like I was being pushed to finally and completely break up with Chun Li. [How could I, though? She was my video-game muse (before other female characters started to get more attention. If they ever created an evil Chun Li, though, I’d probably go ballistic.] Street Fighter, to me, was always supposed to be a contest between different competitors from around the world…with a minor subplot about a creepy guy trying to take over the world. It wasn’t about good versus evil. But, I guess, it was. [And, if you ever dared to play the old games as M. Bison and win, you’d see just how dark his victory could be…and probably never want to see that, again. It’s not even graphic but was creepy enough to make me hit the reset button.]

What’s Going On…NOW?

So, now, just as I am slowly recovering from last summer’s unnatural natural disaster and so many losses, including a big chunk of a toy, comic book and video collection, there is SO much buzz about new movies and “merch” galore. And, it all feels like such a huge tease and cruel joke. [You take away my previous investments just to bait me with new “better” versions? F$%K YOU, capitalism! I’m not biting your fishing line twice.]

I see the trailer for the new He-Man movie. And, sure, it looks good…enough. But, I also see how it’s another one of these films that’s trying to include nationalities that were not exactly part of the He-Man story I remember. [Sorry, Idris Elba. But, I can’t just insert you into Cats as the villain and then He-Man as the father of one of the greatest animated redheads ever seen. My sister tries to bolster my inner child one more time. But, I remain skeptical.]

Then I see a “teaser” for a new Street Fighter movie. As soon as I learn the big names in the cast (along with those I don’t know, at all), I am turned off. [Two “wrestlers” from the WWE are in this? And, one is playing the other evil guy (to the original evil guy)? And, Jason Momoa is playing Blanka? My first thought was that this was all a fan-made hoax soon to appear with AI simulation. Yeah, yeah. I’ve seen this one. Everyone is working the AI-wish-list angle.]

But, just a few days ago, I saw a flashing neon sign for the “official trailer” and decided to bite when I saw—who else—but the loveliest actress chosen to play my muse, Chun Li. I think what really sold it for me was when she pulls off that spinning leg move (not quite the flying bird kick from the game but just as impressive) and delivers that potent line…BITCH? PLEASE! [Boom. THERE’S my fierce warrior woman ready to break convention.]

[How crazy and fitting is it that her name, Callina Liang, matches up perfectly with Chun Li? And, she’s 26?…isn’t that (roughly) Chun Li’s age in the original (SF2) story?]

Okay; so she doesn’t have Chun Li’s legendary “thunder thighs.” But, that may just be one of those fantasy aspects that doesn’t match up with reality…unless you’re a dancer I know from Dancing with the Stars, who has some of the biggest thighs I’ve ever seen…but would not be able to play Chun Li (unless you want to ruin the character just to get stronger legs). [Did anyone judge Ming Na Wen for HER thighs? I sure didn’t. I was all about her face, that alluring voice and hair.] I don’t know why the movie, especially the trailer, had to make a verbal mention of the lack of Chun Li’s (Callina’s) thighs (just to show her in black leggings? performing most of the character’s dazzling kicks). It’s a cheap joke that’s sure to lose it’s flavor by the time October 16th rolls into view.

[And, Chun Li’s movie costume?…it’s not perfect. It’s probably the worst among the few female characters and only better than those worn by Vega and Zangief, which look more like outfits you’d wear at a nightclub than the iconic game costumes. Even Ming Na Wen had more Chun-Li visual appeal. I don’t like whatever lines the neckline; are those metal studs or rhinestones? The sash looks like it’s so long that it’s bound to get in the way of her legs. She’s not wearing the white bun caps with ribbons, either? But, overall, her look is…decent.]

Now, even though I have already mentioned enough loose ends to give me full permission to completely dismiss this movie from existence…I have to say…the official trailer is…well…(almost) PERFECT! It has so many layers few if any among the many and MANY “reaction” givers (showing those corny staged gasping faces for YouTube bites) seem to grasp with their lack of knowledge.** Once I refreshed my own memory of what all came before this new movie, I realized the trailer is far more than meets the eye.

**There is much talk about respecting the source material (while, at the same time, having the nerve to say the movie is made to be intentionally silly). Though there may be humor woven into the story, I don’t see this film as one of those parodies of past dramas/sitcoms. This isn’t a Brady Bunch mockumentary. The characters are NOT ridiculous. Many of the “reaction” givers don’t even know the characters, haven’t watched the first live-action and anime film (which the new movie takes SO much from and puts right in that trailer).

I really went down the rabbit hole the past few days and watched at least two dozen “reaction” videos. I tried my best to pick out a variety of different nationalities, steering me back to my original interest in the game(s) as a meeting of cultures. And, that slowly opened my mind to more and more of what the trailer was trying to include and convey.

So, with that, let me try to help YOU better understand what may be one of the best movie trailers ever made…

I went out of my way to track down a print shop that was willing to sell me big rolls of paper, which I cut into big poster-size sheets. And, later, I had the same print shop scan my creations so the images could be preserved on digital media (in case some tragic force of nature decided to ruin my archive). [How’s that for foresight?…you know…for those of you who know what happened to my basement storage space.]

After 2012, my world seemed to start collapsing around me, and my creativity retreated to digital realms.

The following is just a sampler of the pieces that came out of that peak year for my creativity. For those of you who have been nagging me to be creative, look back on this slice of history. On this particularly windy Friday, I invite you to breeze through this small gallery space.

The next few pieces were simpler concepts, given little to no depth and left at the “coloring book” page stage. I was just trying to craft images that would look good on a T-shirt.

And, finally, a poster concept that’s a bit of a thinker, similar to my Linkin Park poster. I was in a mood/mindset, angry at the world and grasping at metaphors. See if you can understand where my head was going. This one was first done in pencil, then black Sharpie and filled in with colored pencil.

[Find a comfortable seat and make sure you have the time. This could get wordy.]

I was up to my ears in Atari lore at the time. And, I was late to that show because my family wasn’t the sort to be “the first” at anything. If you are familiar with the Willy Wonka stories, think of me as poor little Charlie Bucket…and Tiny Tim. It may have been an early lesson or glimpse of the future, getting the chance to play/do something when it was already losing popularity. [EHem. ‘Reads the room.]

Begging for games and the chance to make/design them, I often had to save up money from birthdays and other gifts to get games my parents thought would only “rot my brain.” Basically, I was getting sucked into a world that might have been corrupting me. It felt like I was part of the illegal drug trade. [Looking back, I want to scream at how crazy it/I was for spending $50 for ONE game that few bothered to treat with the care that I did.]

If you want to get specific, I was just getting started with my own Atari system (a long painful story for another day) when The Legend of Zelda was featured at Toys R Us as a demo you could watch through a glass case. I remember seeing the original Sega system at the same time. Here I was just trying to build my library of Atari games…when the rest of the world was being sold the next level in gaming. I should have just dropped the colorful boxes cradled in my arms and walked away.

I should point out that many say the original game was an “open world” in which you could complete the nine dungeons in any order. But, I remember the actual manual telling us players that it was a bad idea to face the dungeons out of order. [‘Anyone else remember that warning in the manual?]

I believed the game would crash and die if I tried facing the dungeons out of order. So, I made a point of remembering the order and locations of each one. You can’t reach certain dungeons without items from the previous ones (ie. Dungeon 4 requires the Raft from Dungeon 3).

So, I don’t understand this talk of playing the game as you choose. The only choices I see are what gear you bring to the end game. How tough will you make the game for yourself? And, how much time will you give it? I think the average game, once you have played through and know where everything is, takes about four hours to complete.

Imagine walking into a toy store and seeing THIS, without the music.

From the moment I first saw The Legend of Zelda, I knew I had to get an NES. I didn’t even hear the theme music, at the time. I just loved the graphics…the colors…the creatures…the fairy…and that little elfin hero. However, no one was interested in paying for another system when I had just acquired my Atari (on clearance).

[This commercial helped seal the deal, even though you can tell the guy knew little to nothing about what he was pitching. Wacky sound effects and silly faces make sales!]

[THIS commercial (series) was behind its time. You’ve heard of things being ahead of their time. Had this ad been on American TVs in the mid-1980s, it would have been HUGE!…without even understanding the language! Keep in mind, in the mid-1980s, Michael Jackson’s Thriller was just getting started with its fame. Had I see these foreign ads as a kid, I would have… Let’s just say I would have been an even bigger fan.]

By 1988, I had become educated about gift receipts. And, as it turned out, I was handed eight presents that didn’t mean as much to me as getting an NES did (already years after other kids at school had and had given up on one). [Remember: I’m late to the “show.” I’m like the white rabbit in Wonderland, here.] Like the Grinch, I had a crafty idea build in my head. I came up with an excuse for each of those eight presents (ie. the sweater from Grandma was too big and itchy) and collected eight gift receipts which I soon turned into $150.

[Yep. That’s what an NES costed back then. And, the version I BOUGHT wasn’t even the fancy one with the goofy robot assistant. ‘Kicks a little guy like me right in the gut. Could you have asked more from a short kid who was scraping by to get a sliver of happiness? Why is the number of presents significant? Uh…ask someone who’s played the original Zelda game if you don’t already know.]

I remember getting out of my parents’ car and charging into the local toy store with my money in hand. I slapped it on the counter (just like Charlie Bucket when he wanted that Wonka bar) and said, “Give me that NES!” I didn’t look back at my dad’s face but imagine he must have been bewildered by my determination.

Now…the adventure doesn’t conclude there. Remember. That’s just the system I acquired. It came with Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt, I think. [Honestly, it’s been so long; I can’t even remember if my NES had the light gun or not. I didn’t care as much at the time because my classmates had already given up on those “starter” games. They were “old hat.”] I didn’t have what I still needed to complete the quest of my heart. I still needed a copy of the game (the game I really wanted…the one that would alter my life as an artist and, later, as an astrology and mythology student)……which would cost another $50. [Somebody put me out of my misery!]

Jump ahead one year. What appears on TV? A cartoon about the Legend of Zelda?! Are you kidding me?! My eyes go wide… [Some years prior, there was a Dragon’s Lair cartoon which was a cheap mockery of the game/cartoon Don Bluth had made famous. And, I didn’t get to fully enjoy that short-lived but cherished cartoon…eh, series.] You could say, from the moment I heard the opening music and Zelda’s cartoon voice, a fire lit in my heart. I was (back) on the quest…to get my own copy of The (original) Legend of Zelda.

[Now, forgive me if my memory gets foggy, here. I don’t remember if I actually gathered up the money to get the game or if someone finally submitted to my persistent begging.]

When I finally got my hands on that delightful, magical, golden game cartridge, I treated it like a Dead Sea Scroll. It was sacred. No one else was allowed to touch it. I got upset when my own tiny hands became oily and soiled a page of the manual. It was…my precious.

[All of those stories you hear about blowing on the vital parts of the game cartridge when it malfunctioned are true. It was a silent prayer for safe and stable gameplay.]

And, long story short, that was the beginning of a new phase in my life. It began with me turning images from game manuals into poster-board cutouts I could put on my bedroom walls (if my parents ever allowed that to happen…and because they wouldn’t afford me those decals and posters other kids could get for their rooms). My journey into the world of Hyrule was just beginning when other kids had already tossed the “book” on a pile. Even Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link was losing its charm when I was first embracing my own quest as Link. The original Legend of Zelda was a powerful source of inspiration, the way some people talk about novels they love to read. The theme music is a legend in itself.

The original game made you believe Zelda needed to be rescued. If you watch that 1989 cartoon and get to know the later Zelda games, you know Zelda doesn’t really need to be rescued. She can usually handle herself quite well. But, fate seems to decide what happens to the three main characters, and that aspect is a bit maddening. When the adventure becomes just a cycle in some twisted game of forces beyond mortal comprehension, it’s not a simple adventure, anymore.

I’m not sure how to wrap this story up because, honestly, the journey continues. It’s not over. As you can see…they keep making Zelda games. But, even if I lose touch with them (in part because I don’t like how Link changed after the original games), I’m still that little hero on a quest, seeking the next adventure.

THaNkS fOr PLayiNG.

So, it’s just the dawning of the new lunar year, the year of the infamous Fire Horse, what some consider to be the 13th sign (of 12) and most dangerous in some cases. Yep. I read that somewhere. 1966 was infamous for its losses (of life). Well, 2026 is showing signs, already, of things to come. Here are a few local details.

Day 1

Unusually gloomy weather/atmosphere outside. The previous few days were warm, sunny and inviting (as long as you avoid the tree pollen). Everything was reassuring. Then it becomes completely gray outside, like death warmed over. We go from seeing everyone taking a walk to no one taking a walk. You’d think Bad Bart just got into town, scaring everyone into their houses. I take a step outside to collect garbage bins, and I’m chilly! How is it close to 40 F but so chilly? So, I put the heat back on.

At night, a storm brews. Rain. Wind. Something’s coming.

Day 2 (Today, the day this piece was originally posted)

An alert goes out early. FIRE CONDITIONS. DRY AIR. STRONG WINDS. It’s as if the Fire Horse is breathing hard out of its nostrils, sending down a stern warning. FOOOFH! Breheheh… FOOOFH!

And, what sound wakes me up in the morning? Chainsaws. A crew is outside, cutting down my neighbor’s big tree. It has begun (I’m guessing). I wonder how many trees and/or old-house rooves will be lost this week (if not today).

Week? 3 (Let’s just say the first half of April)

They say April showers bring May flowers. Well, I anticipate a TON of flowers and enough pollen to kill me after recent showers. And, not just rain; thunder, lightning and TORNADO WARNINGS. Luckily, they’ve just been warnings, as far as I know. Yet, the winds have been strong enough to turn my windows into loose teeth and have me scared enough that I hastily bagged my computer and huddled in a “safe” corner until the winds died down for more than an hour (cuz ya never know when you’re in the eye of a storm until you get some kind of sign).

I thought last summer’s disaster was rough…and it was. The flood cost and pushed me to where I am writing today. But, these recent storms….day after day after day after day of uncertain weather and heavy downpours…storms so rough they knock out television and phone signals, denying me anything to do other than read by candlelight when my nerves need a long-lasting hug. IT’S INSANITY! IT’S NATURE (and Aries season) KICKING ASS AND SCRUBBING NAMES FROM HISTORY.

And, of course, I find more water in the new basement. Can I not escape this torture, this on-going threat to survival? The rot that says “You need to go.” Go where?

This is the kind of weather that plays right into a book series I’ve been struggling to write (for reasons). It’s like some biblical plague unleashed upon certain regions just for some dark crime that was committed; but is everyone who suffers guilty or just casualties in the path of justice?

You might be thinking…what does heavy rain have to do with a Fire Horse. Well, it’s furious energy. Lightning is a form of fire/energy. The winds and storms blow through and appear on a map like a stampeding bunch of horses. Sometimes the absence of fire can be an act of a fire entity, not unlike Demeter causing or allowing winter when her daughter Persephone isn’t within reach. A drought or wildfire can be fire at one extreme while a flood or heavy thunderstorm is at another extreme. Furious storm energy sure sounds like “fire.” Yet, my memory seems to recall similar intensity in earth-animal years, like the Earth Tiger of 1998. So…what do I really know?

I picture myself as a cowboy, stepping out (because I need to get outside and get somewhere) and facing not just the deforesting crew but the big old trees that need to go (so they don’t ignite or fall on any of the old houses). I go for my gun…squint my eyes…and say…

THIS TOWN ISN’T BIG ENOUGH FOR ALL OF US.

What does this mean? I’m not going to give a full explanation of Chinese Astrology. I’m not going to bother listing general tips and most information you can find from the same sources I could locate for you. But, I will do my best to share a few potentially helpful details, using my own way with words.

• Just try to think of the elements (and the animals that embody them each year) as parts of a cycle. As we leave the year of the Grass Snake and enter the year of the Fire Horse, either what was grown in the prior year is lost (burnt, spent) or it grows faster/larger with the intensity of the sun (fire). Like any fire, it can be beneficial with proper balance and control. So, we are encouraged to control ourselves and maintain our balance. The Grass Snake pressured people to slow down and think. The Fire Horse tears up that book and says get moving.

• As with every lunar new year, the Fire Horse is inclined to be more of a benefit to some and pain to others. If you can’t keep up with the Fire Horse, you might get trampled (or burned) if you don’t control yourself (keep calm, for starters). In Chinese astrology, who are the friends of the Horse? Who is four (or even just two) years apart from the Horse? The Tiger and Dog, fellow strong, daring signs, are most likely to benefit from this year. Monkeys usually enjoy the thrill/energy; as do Dragons. [You may have noticed someone born a Dragon year complaining during the year of the Grass Snake because of the overall “lag” bringing/slowing them down.]

• For anyone born (six years apart from the Horse) the year of the Rat (or Mouse, if you want to be more…cute), this may be the year you say, “Awe RATS!” You’ll want to lay low and stay out of trouble/harm’s way. Likewise, any of the more peaceful signs, the Sheep/Goat, Rabbit/Hare and/or Pig should just do their best to maintain inner peace and, if possible, find innovative ways to get ahead (if possible, through connections made with those who thrive this year).

• Based upon the above information, it would be wise to avoid conflicts with those who benefit from the Fire Horse year. If you start or engage in a fight/argument with someone born a Horse, Dog or Tiger year, this year, expect to lose. If you gamble, don’t expect to win against those signs, either (unless you’re one lucky Monkey). So, whenever possible, avoid conflicts or risks with those who thrive this year (and do your best to be their friend).

LUCKY COLORS AND WHY (based upon other sources**):

• Blue (Water)** balances fire, produces steam energy; steam powers machinery to make progress. You’d think water would put out fire, but, properly used, it maintains balance and creates energy.

• Black (Earth)** counters fire like protection. If you are weak against fire, black offers a shield to potentially spare you a bad day/outcome.

• Red (Fire and general Chinese good luck) shows the energy and spirit of the year. This is your “when in Rome” color of the year but also a color generally associated with the celebration and thus intended for good luck/fortune. But, remember, all forms of energy need some kind of balance/control, as well. So, too much red could be overwhelming unless you are a thrill seeker/extrovert. [And, even an unwise extrovert could get burnt without proper self-control/balance. But, their nature suggests that they won’t even pay attention to the loss.]

• (Emerald) Green (Wood/Grass) is surprisingly good this year because Fire (Sun)—in moderation—boosts growth. Green is often associated with money/financial goals, as well. It is said anyone seeking promotion could benefit from this color…yet, anyone who does not want extra duties dumped upon them (I’m looking at you who claim to be on the “autistic spectrum”) would be advised to avoid or wear just a little green for financial luck or positive growth.

• Gold (Metal) is shiny in the Fire Horse year, making it attractive. Gold could get you noticed. [If you need help, gold might be the signal that gets it.] Fire also heats and can shape metal; so you might think of wearing this metal/color as a way of being your own tool or weapon (to achieve success).

**Now, if you look up info on lucky and unlucky colors, elsewhere, you’re bound to find sources that say some of the above are UNLUCKY this year, which makes the understanding of lucky colors almost impossible (in my opinion). Black is generally considered bad luck for the holiday time itself. Blue (Water) and black (Earth) indeed can put out fire, spoiling the energy.

MY RECOMMENDATIONS?

• PURPLE. Why? Purple is the balance of red (Fire) and blue (Water). If you wear both, you should be balanced, energized without excess/burnout, fully steamy. ‘Too much fire (red), and you lose control. ‘Too much blue/black, and you spoil everything, eliminate opportunity for success/growth.

• GOLD (for the reasons stated above) as an accent color (jewelry, scarves, tie, etc.).

• A VIBRANT GREEN PAIRED WITH SOMETHING either SUPPRESSING (BROWN/BLACK…possibly BLUE, though I don’t see how blue and green work well together in terms of fashion) OR ENERGIZING (RED, YELLOW OR ORANGE). This makes you like a burning bush or fireplace/hearth that is both fuel source (stability) and energy. [This might be a year to wear those Christmas colors at any time.] If you wear all green, you might just get used; so I would suggest a combo (green with red, brown, yellow or black)…unless you like being devoured/drained.

• RED, ORANGE and/or YELLOW are what I consider light/fire colors (though some will say yellow is metal/gold) and suitable for “going with the flow” just so you don’t get left in the dust. But, as stated above, use with caution. Only play with fire if you’re the kind who likes to gamble; and, even then, you’d be wise to balance the fire with some other color, as I stated for GREEN.

That’s all for now. Class dismissed. Now, get out there and make the most of your energy without risking/losing your balance. If you ever feel at risk of a loss, take a step back, think it through and maybe change your clothes. Just because we’re entering a fast-paced fire year doesn’t mean all of us have to be running all of the time.
