In 1977, author Armistead Maupin sat down at his desk at the San Francisco Chronicle and wrote a letter from a gay son to his mother.

At the time, Anita Bryant was leading her infamous “Save Our Children” campaign, built around the idea that gay people were a threat to children. Maupin was writing Tales of the City as a newspaper serial, and one of his characters was Michael Tolliver, a gay man whose parents were conservative Christians and Florida orange growers.

So Maupin had Michael receive a letter from his parents telling him that they were supporting Bryant’s campaign.

And then he had Michael write back.

But there was something readers didn’t know.

Armistead Maupin himself had not yet come out to his parents.

They subscribed to the San Francisco Chronicle. They would read Michael’s letter.

And Maupin knew they would understand.

He has since said that although Michael was speaking, the letter was really his own.

It begins:

“Dear Mama,

I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to write. Every time I try to write to you and Papa I realize I’m not saying the things that are in my heart.”

And then comes a sentence that, all these years later, still takes our breath away:

“I’m sorry, Mama. Not for what I am, but for how you must feel at this moment.”

Michael goes on to tell his mother about the shame and fear he carried growing up, about wishing someone had simply told him that he was all right, and about finally discovering that being gay was not something from which he needed to be saved.

Maupin wrote the letter in less than an hour.

Before it appeared in the newspaper, he read it aloud at a benefit at San Francisco’s Castro Theatre. He remembers reaching the end and hearing silence. Then people crying. Then hands reaching out to touch and comfort him.

Over the years, people have told Maupin that Michael’s letter gave them the courage to come out. He now considers it perhaps the most significant thing he has ever written.

And maybe one reason it still resonates so deeply is that the question at the heart of the letter hasn’t disappeared.

What happens when the people being discussed from pulpits, political stages and television screens as a threat to children turn out to be our children?

Our sons.

Our daughters.

Our trans and nonbinary kids.

The children we rocked to sleep and packed lunches for and worried about and prayed for and loved long before we had the language to understand everything about them.

Nearly fifty years have passed since Michael wrote, “Dear Mama.”

The political targets have shifted. Some of the words have changed.

But there are still people telling parents that LGBTQ+ people are dangerous. There are still campaigns claiming they are protecting children while LGBTQ+ children listen.

And there are still children wondering what their parents will do when they discover that the people everyone is talking about are them.

That’s why this old letter matters.

Because sometimes history leaves us something worth carrying forward.

A son telling his mother the truth.

A mother being given the opportunity to know her child more fully.

And a reminder to every parent who finds themselves standing at that crossroads:

When the world tells you to fear your child, choose your child.

Every time.

Here's the letter :

Dear Mama,

I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to write. Every time I try to write to you and Papa I realize I’m not saying the things that are in my heart. That would be O.K., if I loved you any less than I do, but you are still my parents and I am still your child.

I have friends who think I’m foolish to write this letter. I hope they’re wrong. I hope their doubts are based on parents who loved and trusted them less than mine do. I hope especially that you’ll see this as an act of love on my part, a sign of my continuing need to share my life with you. I wouldn’t have written, I guess, if you hadn’t told me about your involvement in the Save Our Children campaign. That, more than anything, made it clear that my responsibility was to tell you the truth, that your own child is homosexual, and that I never needed saving from anything except the cruel and ignorant piety of people like Anita Bryant.

I’m sorry, Mama. Not for what I am, but for how you must feel at this moment. I know what that feeling is, for I felt it for most of my life. Revulsion, shame, disbelief - rejection through fear of something I knew, even as a child, was as basic to my nature as the color of my eyes.

No, Mama, I wasn’t “recruited.” No seasoned homosexual ever served as my mentor. But you know what? I wish someone had. I wish someone older than me and wiser than the people in Orlando had taken me aside and said, “You’re all right, kid. You can grow up to be a doctor or a teacher just like anyone else. You’re not crazy or sick or evil. You can succeed and be happy and find peace with friends - all kinds of friends - who don’t give a damn who you go to bed with. Most of all, though, you can love and be loved, without hating yourself for it.”

But no one ever said that to me, Mama. I had to find it out on my own, with the help of the city that has become my home. I know this may be hard for you to believe, but San Francisco is full of men and women, both straight and gay, who don’t consider sexuality in measuring the worth of another human being.

These aren’t radicals or weirdos, Mama. They are shop clerks and bankers and little old ladies and people who nod and smile to you when you meet them on the bus. Their attitude is neither patronizing nor pitying. And their message is so simple: Yes, you are a person. Yes, I like you. Yes, it’s all right for you to like me, too.

I know what you must be thinking now. You’re asking yourself: What did we do wrong? How did we let this happen? Which one of us made him that way?

I can’t answer that, Mama. In the long run, I guess I really don’t care. All I know is this: If you and Papa are responsible for the way I am, then I thank you with all my heart, for it’s the light and the joy of my life.

I know I can’t tell you what it is to be gay. But I can tell you what it’s not.

It’s not hiding behind words, Mama. Like family and decency and Christianity. It’s not fearing your body, or the pleasures that God made for it. It’s not judging your neighbor, except when he’s crass or unkind.

Being gay has taught me tolerance, compassion and humility. It has shown me the limitless possibilities of living. It has given me people whose passion and kindness and sensitivity have provided a constant source of strength. It has brought me into the family of man, Mama, and I like it here. I like it.

There’s not much else I can say, except that I’m the same Michael you’ve always known. You just know me better now. I have never consciously done anything to hurt you. I never will.

Please don’t feel you have to answer this right away. It’s enough for me to know that I no longer have to lie to the people who taught me to value the truth.

Last week, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stood before a crowd at the Iowa State Fair and casually used an anti-transgender slur.

Not accidentally.

Not in a private conversation.

From a stage.

While serving as the United States Secretary of Defense.

Hegseth said the military does “training, not tr*nnies” and then, remarkably, went on to describe the military as “gender-neutral” and “merit-based.”

Let that sink in.

The person responsible for leading the United States military publicly reduced an entire group of Americans to a slur — including those trans Americans who have served this country honorably.

And this isn’t happening in a vacuum.

Hegseth has overseen the Trump administration’s effort to remove transgender people from military service. In June, a federal appeals court panel found that the policy was likely unconstitutional and concluded there was evidence it was motivated by animus toward transgender people.

This is why words matter.

When someone with enormous power talks about a marginalized group with contempt, it sends a message far beyond the people standing in front of that stage.

It tells other people that ridicule is acceptable.

It tells transgender Americans that their dignity is negotiable.

And it tells transgender kids who hear these words that even the adults entrusted with leading their country may see people like them as something to mock.

We want them to hear something else.

You are not a slur.

You are a human being.

You are worthy of dignity and respect.

And there are millions of us who will keep saying so, especially when people in power refuse to.

A new analysis from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation estimates that 12% of U.S. adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or gender diverse.

That is an estimated 25.6 million people.

But the number that really caught our attention wasn’t 25.6 million.

It was 40.

According to the analysis, LGBTQ+ adults make up more than 10% of the adult population in 40 states, plus Washington, D.C.

Not just California and New York.

Not just the places people sometimes imagine when they think about LGBTQ+ America.

Everywhere.

In Arizona, the estimate is 13.34%.

In Georgia, 11.46%.

Pennsylvania, 11.14%.

North Carolina, 10.56%.

Texas, 12.54%.

That’s an estimated 2.24 million LGBTQ+ adults in Texas alone.

In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where Real Mama Bears began, HRC estimates nearly 13% of adults are LGBTQ+ — more than 630,000 people.

Think about that for a minute.

Because we hear LGBTQ+ people talked about all the time as though they are some tiny group demanding an unreasonable amount of attention.

A fringe group. A special interest. A handful of people whose lives somehow shouldn’t matter enough to influence public policy.

But the numbers tell a very different story.

LGBTQ+ people are your neighbors.

They are sitting beside you at the Friday night football game.

They are teaching your children.

They are checking your groceries.

They are sitting in your church pews.

They are running businesses.

They are caring for patients.

They are serving in the military.

They are raising children.

They are living in big cities and tiny towns.

And, of course, they are sitting around our dinner tables.

For those who are parents of LGBTQ+ children, none of this is particularly surprising.

We have known all along that LGBTQ+ people are everywhere.

What these numbers do is make that reality harder to dismiss.

The analysis demonstrates that the community is young and diverse.

53.8% of the LGBTQ+ adults in HRC’s analysis are between the ages of 18 and 34.

Other research has found that close to 30% of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ+.

Sometimes people hear statistics like that and conclude that being LGBTQ+ must somehow be a trend among young people.

But there's another explanation that makes more sense…

Young people have grown up with more language to describe who they are and greater freedom to say it out loud.

Bisexual people represent the largest portion, accounting for more than 7% of U.S. adults.

Hispanic adults make up about 18% in the analysis and Black Americans make up about 9%.

LGBTQ+ people cross virtually every line we use to divide ourselves — race, religion, geography, class, political affiliation and family background.

There is no single LGBTQ+ experience.

There never has been.

Which brings us to politics.

This is where these numbers become particularly important.

For several years now, politicians across the country have introduced and passed laws restricting the lives of LGBTQ+ people, with transgender people bearing an extraordinary amount of that attention.

We hear debates about bathrooms. sports, healthcare, books, schools, pronouns. drag shows, pride flags.

And sometimes the political rhetoric makes LGBTQ+ people sound like an abstract cultural issue.

They’re not. They’re people. Millions of them.

When lawmakers pass legislation targeting LGBTQ+ people, they aren’t legislating about some hypothetical group somewhere else.

They’re legislating about their own constituents.

In Texas, that’s an estimated 2.24 million adults.

And many millions more Americans are their parents, grandparents, siblings, children, spouses, friends, coworkers and neighbors.

That’s something politicians would be wise to remember.

HRC separately reports that 92% of LGBTQ+ voters say they definitely intend to vote in the 2026 midterm elections.

The LGBTQ+ community and those who support them aren't  merely becoming more visible.

They are becoming an increasingly important part of the American electorate.

However, there is a part of this story that concerns us.

The data HRC analyzed came from more than 2.4 million responses to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey collected between 2021 and 2024.

That matters because the federal government has since been removing questions about sexual orientation and gender identity from federal data collections.

According to research from the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, approximately 360 federal data collections removed at least one sexual-orientation or gender-identity measure during the first year of the second Trump administration.

Why does that matter?

Because data isn’t simply about counting people.

Data helps us understand people’s lives.

It helps researchers identify health disparities.

It helps communities understand where services are needed.

It helps us recognize discrimination.

It helps governments allocate resources.

It helps organizations know who they’re serving.

And it allows us to see when policies are helping or harming particular groups of Americans.

If you stop asking whether LGBTQ+ people exist in the data, they don’t actually disappear.

They simply become harder to see and less likely to be safe and included.

And it is especially troubling for a population to be made less visible at precisely the same moment government policies are increasingly affecting that population.

One important caveat we want to point out …

Population estimates vary depending on how researchers ask these questions and how surveys are conducted.

Gallup’s most recent estimate puts the LGBTQ+ adult population at about 9%, compared with HRC’s 12%.

That difference doesn’t mean that millions of people suddenly became LGBTQ+, nor does it necessarily mean that either organization has produced a bad estimate.

Gallup conducts telephone interviews with a much smaller sample. The Census Household Pulse Survey was completed online by millions of respondents. Researchers know that people sometimes answer sensitive questions differently when they have greater privacy.

So don't get hung up on whether the perfect number is 9%, 10%, 11% or 12%.

The takeaway here is that there are millions and millions of LGBTQ+ Americans.

And their numbers are growing as younger generations become more comfortable identifying openly.

You cannot erase people by refusing to count them.

You cannot make a transgender person disappear by removing “gender identity” from a government survey.

You cannot make a gay teenager straight by banning a Pride flag from their classroom.

You cannot make a nonbinary student cease to exist by refusing to use their pronouns.

You cannot make LGBTQ+ families disappear by removing their books from a library.

And you cannot legislate millions of Americans out of existence.

They are already here.

In every state.

In every community.

In our schools.

In our churches.

In our workplaces.

In our neighborhoods.

And in our families.

One thing we love about these numbers is they remind us:

We are not alone. 

There are millions of LGBTQ+ people in this country — and millions more of us who love them.

That’s not a fringe.

That’s America.

And perhaps it’s time our laws, our politics, our churches and our communities started acting like it.

For a while now, Donald Trump and his social media team have been playing a pretty clever game with some of the biggest names in music.

They use their songs in political TikTok videos knowing full well that the artists don’t support Trump or the policies being promoted.

And when the artists complain?

Even better.

The controversy generates headlines. Fans rush to the post to see what happened. People comment, share and argue. And suddenly a video that might have reached thousands is reaching millions.

Artists including Ariana Grande, Katy Perry and others have objected when their music has been used in Trump administration content. But objecting publicly creates its own problem: it can give the original post even more attention.

Which is probably what the people behind the posts are counting on.

Then they decided to mess with Taylor Swift.

It appears that was a mistake.

Earlier this month, Team Trump’s TikTok account posted a video of Donald and Melania Trump watching fireworks from the White House balcony. The soundtrack was Taylor Swift’s “August.”

But they didn’t just quietly use her song.

They tagged her.

“I’m sure @Taylor Swift is going to be super excited we used her song!”

Considering the history between Taylor Swift and Donald Trump, the sarcasm wasn’t exactly subtle.

It was bait.

And Taylor didn’t take it.

She didn’t post an angry response. She didn’t start a public fight with Trump. She didn’t send millions of Swifties rushing over to his TikTok account to defend her.

She said nothing.

And then something interesting happened.

Taylor Swift’s music started disappearing from Trump’s TikToks.

“August” went silent.

Another Trump video using Swift’s “Father Figure” lost its soundtrack.

Other Trump and White House posts featuring her music have been muted as well.

We still don’t know exactly what happened behind the scenes. Swift hasn’t publicly taken credit for the removals, and we should be careful about viral claims suggesting she personally forced TikTok to create some new policy.

But we know this:

Trump’s team tried to provoke Taylor Swift with her own music.

Taylor didn’t give them the public fight they appeared to be looking for.

And now they don’t have her music either.

Taylor Swift: 1. Donald Trump: 0.

FTR, this wasn’t Taylor and Trump’s first round.

Taylor Swift wasn’t always outspoken about politics. For years, she largely stayed out of the political conversation, something she was both praised and criticized for.

That changed in 2018, when she endorsed two Democratic candidates in her home state of Tennessee and encouraged her fans to register and vote.

By 2020, she was taking on Trump directly.

After Trump responded to protests following the murder of George Floyd by warning that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts,” Taylor accused him of “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism” and ended her message with these words:

“We will vote you out.”

She went on to endorse Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the 2020 election.

Then things got more interesting between Taylor and Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign.

In August of that year, Trump shared AI-generated images on Truth Social that falsely suggested Taylor Swift and her fans were supporting him. One depicted Taylor dressed as Uncle Sam with the words “Taylor wants you to vote for Donald Trump.”

Trump added:

“I accept!”

Except Taylor hadn’t endorsed him.

In fact, immediately following the presidential debate, she endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

And she made a point of mentioning Trump’s fake AI images in her endorsement, saying they had heightened her concerns about misinformation and convinced her she needed to be very clear about where she stood.

Her endorsement had an immediate impact. The link she shared to Vote.gov generated more than 300,000 visits within a day.

Trump was not amused.

Asked about the endorsement, he said he had never been a Taylor Swift fan and predicted she would “pay a price” for supporting Democrats.

Then, a few days later, he dispensed with any pretense of political disagreement and posted this on Truth Social:

“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

Taylor didn’t respond.

Months later, Trump was still talking about her, publicly mocking her after the Super Bowl and later claiming she was “no longer ‘HOT’” since he had declared his hatred for her.

Again, Taylor mostly ignored him.

Which brings us back to TikTok.

When Team Trump chose “August” for its video, tagged Taylor Swift and sarcastically announced how “excited” she would surely be that they were using her song, this wasn’t happening in a vacuum.

Trump had falsely portrayed her as endorsing him.

She had publicly endorsed his opponent.

He had predicted she would pay a price for it.

He had announced to the world that he hated her.

And now his social media team was using her music while publicly poking her to see if she would respond.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

But maybe Taylor understood the game

Here’s the part of this story we keep thinking about.

Taylor Swift could have responded.

She could have posted a statement demanding that Trump stop using her music. She could have called out the campaign for trolling her. She could have reminded everyone that she doesn’t support him.

And millions of people would have listened.

But millions of people also would have gone looking for the video.

Swifties would have flooded the comments. News organizations would have written about the fight. Trump almost certainly would have responded. His supporters would have joined in.

And a TikTok that might otherwise have come and gone would suddenly have been everywhere.

In other words, Team Trump would have gotten exactly what they appeared to be asking for:

A lot of attention.

Instead, Taylor stayed quiet.

And while we still don’t know exactly what happened behind the scenes, we know what happened publicly.

Taylor didn’t take the bait.

And the songs disappeared from the Trump TikTok videos.

There may be something we can learn from that.

Before you react, ask one question

Politicians, influencers and social media accounts have learned that making people angry is one of the easiest ways to get their attention.

Post something outrageous and people will share it to tell everyone how outrageous it is.

Say something offensive and thousands of people will quote it while explaining why it’s offensive.

Attack someone with a huge following and maybe they’ll respond — and bring their enormous audience with them.

And the algorithm doesn’t care why we’re engaging.

It just knows we’re engaging.

That means sometimes, without realizing it, we end up helping spread the very message we’re trying to fight.

What Taylor’s response reminds us to do is ask ourselves one question before we react:

Am I helping expose this — or am I helping amplify it?

There isn’t one right answer that applies every time.

Sometimes something is important enough that we absolutely should share it and talk about it.

Sometimes we need to be loud.

Sometimes we need to make people uncomfortable.

Sometimes we need to draw as much attention as possible to something that is happening.

But sometimes the smartest response is to refuse to play the game.

Don’t give the troll your audience.

Don’t send thousands of people to the post they deliberately created to make you angry.

Don’t mistake reacting for resisting.

Instead, figure out what might actually make a difference.

Call someone.

Organize something.

Support the people being harmed.

Contact the company.

File the complaint.

Use whatever leverage you have.

Work quietly behind the scenes if that’s what will be more effective.

And then let the results speak for themselves.

Maybe that’s what Taylor Swift did here.

We don’t know.

But there is a tendency to think that resistance always has to look like a raised fist and a megaphone.

And sometimes it does.

But resistance can also be thoughtful.

Deliberate.

Strategic.

Sometimes using your voice means speaking as loudly as you possibly can.

And sometimes it means recognizing that someone desperately wants your reaction and refusing to give it to them.

Trump’s team tried to get Taylor Swift’s attention by using her own music.

Taylor didn’t give them a public fight.

And now several of their videos don’t have her music either.

Maybe Taylor Swift didn’t win by being louder.

Maybe she won by being smarter.

We wonder if she’s tired of winning yet. 😄

Now more than ever, we need to come together and do everything we can to protect the LGBTQ+ community.

Democrats need to stop talking about transgender people.

Trans issues are too controversial.

Supporting trans people costs elections.

Move to the center. Change the subject. Distance yourself.

And, sometimes, the message is even less subtle:

Transgender people have become a political liability.

Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico was recently asked about that argument.

His response was simple:

“I don’t think we win by selling people out.”

We hope more politicians are paying attention.

The strategy is already playing out in Texas

Talarico’s support for transgender people has become a major line of attack against him.

His Republican opponent, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has repeatedly criticized Talarico over LGBTQ+ issues. And conservative groups are spending money to make transgender people part of the campaign.

This week, a conservative super PAC launched an AI-generated ad depicting Talarico as a doctor performing gender-transition surgery on a child.

It is a fictional image designed to frighten people.

And it illustrates exactly what Talarico is talking about.

Transgender people make up a very small percentage of the population. Yet somehow, election after election, they are presented as one of the greatest problems facing America.

Why?

Talarico believes he knows at least part of the answer.

Distraction.

Look over here

Talarico has been making the case that politicians use culture-war issues to keep people angry at one another while much bigger problems go unaddressed.

Families are struggling to afford housing.

Health care is expensive.

Prescription drug costs can be crushing.

Groceries cost more.

People worry about whether their children will ever be able to afford a home.

Meanwhile, politicians tell voters to be afraid of a transgender teenager.

At the Texas Democratic Convention this summer, Talarico argued that politicians use culture wars to divide people while ordinary Americans struggle economically.

That doesn’t mean every question involving transgender people is simple.

Talarico himself has acknowledged that there are legitimate policy conversations to be had. He has specifically described transgender participation in sports as an issue where people with different perspectives should be able to work toward policy solutions.

We can debate policy.

We can disagree.

We can wrestle with complicated questions.

But that is very different from turning an entire group of people into a political scapegoat.

Someone always pays the price

When we talk about transgender people only as a “political issue,” it becomes easy to forget something important:

They are people.

They are children sitting in classrooms.

Teenagers trying to figure out where they belong.

Young adults beginning careers.

Parents raising families.

Teachers. Nurses. Accountants. Artists. Engineers. Veterans.

They are our children, grandchildren, siblings, friends and neighbors.

And they hear these conversations.

Imagine being a transgender teenager and repeatedly hearing adults debate whether supporting people like you is politically inconvenient.

Imagine hearing members of one political party attack your existence and then hearing members of another wonder whether defending you might cost them too many votes.

What message does that send?

There is a difference between compromise and abandonment.

There is a difference between political strategy and deciding that some people are expendable.

We’ve seen this before

History is filled with examples of marginalized people being used to frighten voters.

Gay people were once portrayed as threats to children and families.

Interracial marriage was once described as a danger to society.

School integration was treated as an assault on communities.

Again and again, politicians have discovered that fear can be politically useful.

And again and again, progress has depended on people eventually saying:

Enough.

You don’t have to understand everything about someone to believe they deserve dignity.

You don’t have to agree on every policy question to refuse to participate in dehumanization.

And you certainly don’t have to sacrifice vulnerable people to prove that you are politically reasonable.

There is another way to win

This may be the part of Talarico’s argument that interests me most.

He isn’t simply saying Democrats should defend transgender people despite the political consequences.

He is challenging the assumption that abandoning them is good politics in the first place.

Instead of allowing opponents to dictate what voters should fear, talk about what actually affects millions of families.

Can they afford their rent?

Can they see a doctor?

Can they pay for their prescriptions?

Are their public schools adequately funded?

Will their children have opportunities?

Can they retire with dignity?

Those are enormous questions.

And none of them will be solved by making life harder for transgender people.

Perhaps the answer to fear-based politics isn’t finding a more politically convenient group of people to defend.

Perhaps the answer is refusing the premise altogether.

“I don’t think we win by selling people out.”

We keep coming back to that sentence.

Because it applies to much more than one candidate or one election.

It asks a larger question about what kind of movement — and what kind of country — we want to build.

Winning matters. Elections have consequences, particularly for LGBTQ+ people right now.

But how we win matters, too.

If our strategy for creating a more just country requires abandoning people who are already being targeted, what exactly have we won?

Transgender people should not have to prove that defending them is politically advantageous before the rest of us decide they are worth defending.

Their humanity should be enough.

And when politicians discover that attacking a small and vulnerable group might win them votes, I hope more people — politicians and voters alike — are willing to say:

Not this time.

Not at their expense.

Every movement for justice has one thing in common.

Before there were marches…

Before there were court victories…

Before laws changed…

Someone spoke.

Someone told the truth when it would have been easier to stay quiet.

We often think resistance requires extraordinary courage. Images come to mind of famous speeches, massive protests, or people risking everything for a cause.

Sometimes resistance looks like that.

But more often, resistance looks like an ordinary person deciding that silence is no longer an option.

It looks like a parent speaking up at a school board meeting.

A neighbor correcting misinformation.

A teacher creating a classroom where every student feels seen.

A pastor preaching compassion instead of fear.

A friend refusing to laugh at a harmful joke.

A person sharing their story.

Using your voice is one of the oldest forms of resistance humanity has ever known.

Systems of injustice depend on silence

History teaches us something important: injustice rarely survives because everyone supports it.

It survives because too many people remain silent.

Silence creates the illusion that everyone agrees.

When no one challenges harmful ideas, discriminatory policies, or dehumanizing rhetoric, those ideas begin to feel normal. They become accepted simply because they go unchallenged.

One voice can interrupt that illusion.

It doesn’t have to convince everyone.

It simply has to remind people that another perspective exists.

And often, one voice gives another person permission and courage to speak.

Then another.

And another.

That is how communities begin.

Using your voice builds community

One of the greatest gifts of speaking up is that it helps people find one another.

A parent publicly saying, “I love and support my transgender child,” does more than express love for their own family. Somewhere, another frightened parent may finally feel less alone.

A teacher displaying a small Pride sticker on their classroom door communicates something powerful without saying a word: You are safe here.

A church that openly welcomes LGBTQ+ people tells families who have experienced rejection that they don’t have to choose between their faith and their child.

Every time someone speaks with compassion instead of fear, they help build a community where others can breathe a little easier.

Communities don’t begin with organizations.

They begin when people realize they aren’t alone.

Your voice interrupts harm

Not every act of resistance requires a microphone.

Sometimes it sounds like saying:

“Actually, that’s not true.”

“I’ve learned something different.”

“I know someone this affects.”

“I don’t think that’s a fair way to talk about people.”

Those simple moments matter.

They interrupt the momentum of misinformation.

They challenge stereotypes before they harden into assumptions.

They create space for curiosity where fear once lived.

You don’t have to win every conversation.

You don’t have to have the perfect response.

Sometimes your role is simply to interrupt the spread of harm.

Truth matters

We are living in a time when misinformation about transgender people spreads at an astonishing speed.

Claims that transgender people are “confusing children.”

That schools are secretly transitioning students.

That gender diversity is a new trend.

That affirming families are harming their children.

These stories are repeated so often that they can begin to sound true simply through repetition.

But repetition is not evidence.

Fear is not evidence.

Medical experts, psychologists, pediatricians, and researchers have spent decades studying gender identity. While there are thoughtful discussions to be had about healthcare, policy, and best practices, much of the rhetoric circulating online today ignores what the evidence actually says. Instead, it relies on fear, exaggeration, and isolated anecdotes presented as universal truths.

That is why speaking up matters.

Not to shame people.

Not to win arguments.

But to ensure that truth has a voice.

Sharing accurate information.

Explaining what the research actually says.

Helping people understand the lived experiences of transgender people and their families.

These are acts of resistance against misinformation.

Stories change hearts

Facts are important.

Research matters.

But stories often accomplish something statistics cannot.

When someone hears a mother describe the moment her child finally smiled again after being accepted…

When a father talks about choosing love over fear…

When a transgender person shares what it felt like to finally be called by the right name…

People stop seeing “an issue.”

They begin seeing a human being.

Stories remind us that behind every political debate is someone’s child.

Someone’s sibling.

Someone’s neighbor.

Someone deeply loved.

Your voice shifts power

Power is not only held by governments or institutions.

Power also lives in culture.

In conversations.

In stories.

In the ideas we normalize.

Every time enough people begin telling a different story, culture begins to shift.

History is filled with examples.

People once insisted interracial marriage would destroy society.

People claimed women should never vote.

People warned that allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry would somehow harm families.

Those predictions didn’t come true.

What changed wasn’t just the law.

People spoke.

They shared their lives.

They challenged assumptions.

They invited others to know them.

Little by little, hearts changed.

And eventually, laws followed.

Voices are stronger together

There is something uniquely powerful about raising our voices together.

Throughout history, movements for justice have been carried by songs, chants, prayers, and shared words.

People sang during the Civil Rights Movement.

Crowds chant for justice around the world.

Research even suggests that singing together increases oxytocin, reduces stress, and strengthens our sense of connection. When people synchronize their voices and their breathing, they often leave feeling more bonded than when they simply talked together.

Perhaps that’s because our brains recognize something our hearts have always known:

We were never meant to do this work alone.

Ways to use your voice

You don’t need thousands of followers.

You don’t need a platform.

You don’t need to be an expert.

You simply need to be willing to speak.

You can use your voice by:

• Sharing your story.

• Correcting misinformation with kindness.

• Writing letters to elected officials.

• Voting.

• Attending school board or city council meetings.

• Supporting organizations working for equality.

• Posting educational, thoughtful content on social media.

• Having conversations with friends and family.

• Encouraging someone who feels alone.

• Asking thoughtful questions that invite reflection instead of defensiveness.

Every one of these is an act of resistance against fear, misinformation, and indifference.

The world changes one voice at a time

It’s easy to believe our voice doesn’t matter.

After all, what difference can one conversation make?

One Facebook post?

One letter?

One story?

History answers that question.

Every movement we now admire began with ordinary people who refused to stay silent.

Someone spoke.

Someone wrote.

Someone marched.

Someone sang.

Someone told the truth.

Someone stood beside a person everyone else had abandoned.

The movement for LGBTQ+ equality has always depended on people willing to use their voices.

LGBTQ+ people who risked rejection simply by living authentically.

Parents who chose to defend their children instead of protecting their own comfort.

Teachers, pastors, doctors, neighbors, friends, and allies who decided that silence was no longer an option.

None of them changed the world alone.

But together, their voices became impossible to ignore.

We don’t always know which conversation will open a heart.

Which story will change a mind.

Which moment of courage will help someone feel seen.

But we do know this:

Silence protects the status quo.

Truth creates possibility.

Compassion creates connection.

Your voice may never reach millions.

It doesn’t have to.

It only has to reach the next person.

Sometimes, that’s exactly how history changes.

Maybe it will be sharing your story.

Maybe it will be correcting a piece of misinformation with kindness.

Maybe it will be encouraging a parent who feels alone.

Maybe it will be calling an elected official, writing a letter, attending a meeting, or posting something that helps people better understand the LGBTQ+ community.

No act is too small.

Most of us will never stand before thousands of people or deliver a speech that ends up in a history book. But history has always been shaped by ordinary people who chose courage over comfort, truth over silence, and compassion over fear.

Your voice matters.

Not because it’s the loudest.

But because it’s yours.

You never know who might find the courage to speak because they first heard your voice.

Most of us have heard of the “Let Them” theory — the idea that we can’t control other people, only ourselves.

But we recently came across something Vex King calls the “Tell Them” theory, and couldn’t help thinking how much the world needs more of it.

Think your LGBTQ+ child is brave? Tell them.

Notice another parent showing up for their child in a beautiful way? Tell them.

Read a post from an LGBTQ+ person that helped you understand something new? Tell them.

See a teacher, coach, pastor, or friend creating a safer space? Tell them.

Think someone made a difference in your life? Tell them.

The world is already loud with criticism.

For far too many LGBTQ+ people, it’s filled with voices telling them they’re wrong, broken, sinful, confused, or unworthy of love.

Let’s be louder with encouragement.

Never assume someone knows they’re making a difference.

Never assume they know they’re loved.

Never assume they know you’re proud of them.

Never assume they know they matter.

And don’t wait.

Don’t wait until a eulogy to tell someone what they meant to you.

Don’t wait until your child is struggling to tell them how deeply they’re loved.

Don’t wait until someone leaves your life to thank them for how they changed yours.

A few simple words …

“I see you.”

“I’m proud of you.”

“You belong.”

“Thank you.”

“I love you.”

…can become a memory someone carries for years.

The world has enough voices tearing LGBTQ+ people down.

Let’s be intentional about being known as the people who build them up.

If criticism can shape a life, so can encouragement. Let’s be intentional about which one we’re known for.

Over the past decade, we’ve received thousands of messages from LGBTQ+ people.

What’s striking isn’t just how many remember the hurtful things that were said to them.

It’s how many also remember the kind ones.

A teacher who quietly said, “I’m glad you’re here.”

An aunt who whispered, “I love you exactly as you are.”

A friend’s mom who said, “You’re always welcome in our home.”

A parent who finally said, “I’m proud to be your mom.”

Those words become anchors.

People carry them for years — sometimes for a lifetime.

We often underestimate the power of encouragement because it takes only a moment to offer.

But the person who receives it may carry it forever.

So if you’re thinking something kind…

If you’re feeling grateful…

If someone has made your world a little better…

Tell them. 💜

I’ve been thinking all day about Matthew Vines’ recent New York Times opinion piece, “I’m Gay. Not Queer. It Matters.”

First, I want to say that I appreciate much of Matthew’s work over the years. His advocacy has helped countless LGBTQ+ Christians reconcile their faith and their sexuality, and I’ll always be grateful for that.

But on this, I see things differently because I don’t believe LGBTQ+ rights and equality have ever depended on fitting in or assimilating. I believe they’ve always depended on something much deeper: recognizing the equal humanity of LGBTQ+ people.

And I worry that framing the rights LGBTQ+ people have gained throughout history as the result of becoming more acceptable risks unintentionally reinforcing the very idea the LGBTQ+ movement has always challenged—that some LGBTQ+ people deserve acceptance more than others because they’re easier for society to understand.

The movement I believe in and joined years ago is about all LGBTQ+ people being wholeheartedly included in every space, everywhere, all the time.

That's the movement I joined and the movement I’ve spent the last twelve years helping build through Real Mama Bears.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this:

People aren’t asking to be made more acceptable. They’re asking to be fully seen.

They’re longing to belong as their true selves.

Because belonging doesn’t ask someone to be less flamboyant.

Less feminine.

Less masculine.

Less visibly transgender.

Less gender nonconforming.

Less queer.

Less different.

Less “too much.”

Belonging doesn’t ask people to tone themselves down to make others more comfortable. It doesn’t ask someone to make themselves smaller before walking through a door. It doesn’t ask them to hide parts of themselves in order to be worthy of love and respect.

As Brené Brown writes:

“True belonging never asks us to change who we are. True belonging requires us to be who we are.”

That quote captures what I believe is at the heart of this conversation.

Matthew argues that marriage equality succeeded because enough Americans came to see that being gay wasn’t a rejection of ordinary life.

But I don’t believe that’s why we won.

I don’t believe marriage equality was won because LGBTQ+ people became more acceptable. I believe it was won because enough people came to understand that LGBTQ+ people are equally worthy of love, dignity, belonging, and equal protection under the law—not because they assimilated, not because they fit in, but because their humanity mattered.

The movement for LGBTQ+ equality has never been about proving that only the most conventional, respectable, or easily understood among us deserve rights.

It has always been about recognizing the inherent worth of every LGBTQ+ person.

The married gay couple.

The transgender teenager.

The drag queen.

The butch lesbian.

The femme gay man.

The nonbinary college student.

The leather community.

The person who proudly calls themselves queer.

Not because they all look the same.

Not because they all live the same way.

Not because they all believe the same things.

But because every human being deserves dignity, safety, and belonging.

No exceptions.

No hierarchy of worthiness.

Throughout history, marginalized people have often been told that acceptance will come if they can just become a little more palatable.

A little quieter.

A little less different.

A little easier for everyone else to understand.

But that’s not belonging.

That’s assimilation.

And those are not the same thing.

I want a world where LGBTQ+ people don’t have to earn acceptance by becoming more comfortable for other people.

I want a world where they never have to wonder whether they belong.

Because true belonging doesn’t ask us to change who we are.

It asks us to come as we are.

And I believe that’s the future worth fighting for.

June is Pride Month, but Pride celebrations don’t begin and end in June. Across the United States and around the world, Pride events take place from spring through early fall, with festivals, marches, and celebrations happening from May through October in many communities.

Whether you’re attending your first Pride event or your fiftieth, Pride remains a powerful expression of visibility, resilience, joy, and community. It is a celebration of how far we’ve come, a reminder of the work that remains, and a chance to stand together in support of LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.

To everyone attending Pride events this year: we are proud of you for showing up, standing tall, and spreading love in every direction. Your presence matters more than you know.

As you enjoy the festivities, remember that being joyful and being careful can go hand in hand. Here are a few simple reminders to help you stay safe while soaking up all the Pride.

Stay Connected

Keep in touch with your group throughout the day. Consider using a group text to check in, especially if you split up. It’s also wise to choose a designated meeting spot in case phone service becomes unreliable in crowded areas.

Hydrate and Protect Yourself

Many Pride events take place during the hottest months of the year. Bring water, wear sunscreen, and dress comfortably. Rainbow gear is always encouraged.

Know Your Surroundings

Stay aware of your environment and trust your instincts. If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, move to a different area and seek assistance if needed.

Keep Emergency Information Handy

Carry important contact information with you, either on a card or stored in your phone. If you’re traveling, save the address of your hotel or lodging so it’s easy to access if needed.

Travel Light, But Smart

Bring only the essentials. If you’re carrying signs, flags, or other items, be sure they comply with event guidelines and are easy to manage throughout the day.

Watch Out for One Another

One of the most beautiful things about Pride is community. If someone appears lost, overwhelmed, or in need of assistance, a small act of kindness can make a big difference.

Don’t Engage With Protesters

Most Pride events are peaceful and joyful, but you may encounter individuals who are there to protest. The safest approach is usually not to engage. Move away, stay focused on the event, and report any threatening or dangerous behavior to event organizers or law enforcement.

Pride is more than a party. It is a declaration that LGBTQ+ people deserve to live openly, safely, and authentically.

So celebrate. Dance. March. Wave your flags. Make memories.

And while you’re doing all of that, take care of yourself and those around you.

Be loud. Be loving. Be proud. And be safe.

Should we be celebrating Pride when so many LGBTQ+ people still face discrimination, rejection, violence, and political attacks?

It’s a fair question.

After all, Pride Month can sometimes look like a giant party. There are parades, rainbow merchandise, festivals, concerts, and celebrations taking place all over the world. If someone only sees those things, they might wonder whether Pride has become disconnected from the very real struggles LGBTQ+ people continue to face.

But perhaps that’s because Pride has never been just one thing.

For some people, Pride is a celebration. It’s the joy of living authentically. It’s the relief of no longer hiding. It’s the gratitude that comes from finding community and belonging after years of feeling alone.

For others, Pride is something much more complicated. It is a reminder of loved ones lost to AIDS. It is a reminder of family rejection, discrimination, bullying, and the long fight for equal rights. It is a reminder that progress is never guaranteed.

That question stayed with me, and it inspired this Mama Bear Minute

One of the things I’ve come to appreciate about Pride is that celebration and protest are not opposites.

In fact, throughout history, marginalized communities have often used joy itself as an act of resistance.

When people are told they should be ashamed, choosing joy becomes an act of courage.

When people are told to hide, choosing visibility becomes an act of courage.

When people are told they don’t belong, gathering together in community becomes an act of courage.

That’s why Pride can be a celebration and a protest at the same time.

It’s a celebration of lives, relationships, families, and identities that deserve to be celebrated.

And it’s a protest against the systems, attitudes, and policies that continue to deny some people their dignity, safety, and equality.

As the founder of Real Mama Bears, I’ve had the privilege of meeting thousands of LGBTQ+ people and their families. I’ve heard stories of heartbreak and rejection, but I’ve also witnessed extraordinary resilience, love, and hope.

Pride makes room for all of it.

The grief.
The joy.
The progress.
The work that still remains.

So should we be celebrating Pride?

I believe we should.

Not because the work is finished.

But because it isn’t.

And because every person deserves the chance to live authentically, safely, and with dignity.

What does Pride mean to you?

Apparently we’ve reached the point where seeing a Pride flag while walking into work is considered a hardship worthy of legal action.

A Christian employee has sued his employer because he objected to seeing LGBTQ+ symbols and hearing coworkers use pronouns that differed from those assigned at birth.

Let’s be clear about what happened:

Nobody forced him to attend Pride.

Nobody forced him to wave a rainbow flag.

Nobody forced him to change his beliefs.

He simply had to exist in a workplace where LGBTQ+ people and Pride month were acknowledged.

And that, apparently, was too much.

For generations, LGBTQ+ people have been expected to tolerate messages telling them they were sinful, broken, dangerous, or unwelcome. Yet somehow a rainbow flag is what some people consider persecution.

A Pride flag isn’t an attack on anyone’s faith.

It’s a symbol that LGBTQ+ people belong here too.

If your beliefs are threatened by a piece of colorful fabric, perhaps the fabric isn’t the issue.

Over the last few years, many LGBTQ+ people — especially transgender people — have watched businesses respond to growing political pressure in very different ways.

Some companies have quietly backed away from visible support.

Some have reduced Pride campaigns.

Some have stayed silent as anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric intensified across the country.

But some companies have continued standing publicly for inclusion, workplace protections, healthcare access, and dignity for LGBTQ+ employees and customers.

And that matters.

Because for many LGBTQ+ people — especially transgender people — inclusion is not just about rainbow logos in June.

It’s about safety.

It’s about healthcare.

It’s about whether someone can go to work without fear.

It’s about whether employees are protected, respected, and allowed to exist as their authentic selves.

No company is perfect.

Policies can change.

But it’s also important to recognize when businesses choose to use their influence, resources, and policies to help create safer and more inclusive environments.

Because inclusion should not be controversial.

It should be standard.

And while representation alone does not solve discrimination or injustice, visible support from employers can still have a real impact:

• helping LGBTQ+ employees feel safer at work

• encouraging other companies to improve policies

• normalizing inclusion in everyday spaces

• signaling to customers and employees that dignity matters

For transgender people in particular — who are currently facing intense political targeting and misinformation in many places — visible workplace protections and public support can make a meaningful difference.

This is also a reminder that allyship is more than branding.

Real allyship shows up in:

• healthcare coverage

• anti-discrimination protections

• chosen name and pronoun support

• equitable hiring practices

• employee support groups

• speaking up when it matters most

Not just during Pride Month.

And honestly?

Many LGBTQ+ people notice who stays supportive when things become difficult.

In moments when many businesses chose silence or neutrality, that kind of visible support mattered deeply to many people in the LGBTQ+ community.

Democratic erosion is rarely immediate.

It is usually gradual, cumulative, and institutional.

It unfolds through the weakening of norms, the concentration of influence, the politicization of accountability structures, and the slow normalization of changes that might once have generated far greater public alarm.

Which naturally leads to a more difficult question:

What prevents democratic systems from deteriorating further once these dynamics begin to emerge?

Or put more directly:

What allows democratic societies to hold?

History offers an important corrective to fatalism.

Democracies have demonstrated remarkable resilience when sufficient numbers of people — inside institutions and outside them — remain committed to preserving the principles that make democratic governance possible in the first place.

Not perfectly.

Not permanently.

And not without conflict.

But meaningfully.

One of the most persistent misconceptions about democratic stability is the belief that constitutions, laws, and institutions alone are enough to protect a society from authoritarian drift.

History repeatedly demonstrates otherwise.

Institutions are only as durable as the public commitment sustaining them.

Courts matter.

But so does respect for judicial independence.

Elections matter.

But so does public confidence in electoral legitimacy.

Journalism matters.

But so does the willingness of citizens to value factual accountability over ideological convenience.

Democratic systems ultimately depend not only on formal structures, but on civic culture itself.

So what actually strengthens democratic guardrails during periods of institutional strain?

One of the strongest predictors of democratic resilience is the continued independence of institutions designed to constrain power.

Courts that uphold the rule of law even under political pressure.

Election systems that maintain procedural integrity.

Civil servants who continue following legal and ethical standards despite partisan demands.

Much of this work is invisible to the public.

It rarely dominates headlines.

But democratic systems often survive precisely because enough individuals inside institutions continue treating their responsibilities as obligations to the Constitution and the public — not to a political figure or movement.

Democracy depends not only on elections themselves, but on broad participation in civic life.

Not occasionally.

Not only during moments of crisis.

But consistently.

At local, state, and national levels.

Political scientists often note that democratic decline accelerates when public disengagement deepens — when citizens begin believing institutions no longer matter, participation no longer matters, or accountability is no longer possible.

Which is why participation itself becomes a form of democratic reinforcement.

Not because every election resolves systemic problems.

But because functioning democracies depend upon continued public investment in the legitimacy of the process itself.

The preservation of factual reality and historical memory are especially important.

Healthy democratic societies require more than free expression.

They require a broadly shared commitment to factual accountability, institutional transparency, and historical memory.

That includes journalism that investigates rather than merely amplifies outrage.

Citizens who verify before sharing.

Historians, archivists, courts, reporters, and institutions committed to preserving public records and documentary evidence.

Because democratic systems depend upon a society’s ability to remember accurately what occurred within it.

This is why recent events surrounding January 6th records being erased are significant.

In recent days, reporting revealed that the Department of Justice removed numerous public-facing records and press releases connected to January 6th prosecutions from its website, including materials tied to individuals convicted of assaulting police officers during the Capitol attack. The DOJ publicly defended the removals, saying they were “proud” to remove the records and describing some of the prior materials as “partisan propaganda.”

People may disagree about broader political interpretations surrounding January 6th.

But the larger institutional concern extends beyond any individual case.

Historically, democratic societies become more vulnerable when public records, institutional memory, and documented historical events become politically contested to the point that factual preservation itself is reframed as partisan activity.

Authoritarian systems throughout history have consistently understood the importance of controlling historical narrative.

Not always through outright censorship.

Sometimes through reframing.

Selective erasure.

Institutional rewriting.

Or the gradual delegitimization of inconvenient factual records.

Because control over public memory shapes public understanding of legitimacy, responsibility, and truth itself.

This is why transparency, archival preservation, investigative journalism, and documentary accountability are not secondary democratic values.

They are central ones.

One important distinction between modern democratic societies and many authoritarian systems of the past, however, is that control over information is now far more decentralized than it once was.

Historically, populations resisting authoritarian movements often relied upon hidden journals, underground newspapers, whispered testimony, or smuggled evidence preserved at enormous personal risk.

Today, millions of ordinary people carry tools of documentation in their pockets.

Public records can be archived instantly.

Videos can be duplicated globally within seconds.

Deleted materials can often be preserved through distributed networks of journalists, historians, archivists, researchers, and ordinary citizens themselves.

This does not eliminate the dangers of disinformation, propaganda, or historical revisionism.

But it does fundamentally change the relationship between power and memory.

Authoritarian systems have historically depended, in part, upon controlling the public record strongly enough to isolate populations from factual accountability and from one another.

Modern digital societies complicate that process.

The preservation of evidence is no longer solely institutional.

It has also become civic.

Which means democratic responsibility increasingly includes not only consuming information critically, but preserving factual reality itself.

Authoritarian movements often thrive on social isolation and polarization.

Democratic resilience, by contrast, depends heavily upon the continued existence of civic relationships across differences.

When communities remain connected — across ideology, religion, race, geography, or social identity — it becomes more difficult to dehumanize political opponents, distort reality unchecked, or isolate vulnerable groups from broader public concern.

This matters historically because democratic erosion rarely affects all communities equally or simultaneously.

Marginalized communities — including LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, racial minorities, dissidents, and political outsiders — often experience institutional hostility earlier and more intensely than the broader population.

But history also demonstrates that erosion rarely remains confined to those groups alone.

Which is why democratic solidarity matters beyond any single community.

Democratic systems weaken rapidly when accountability becomes conditional.

When legal standards apply unevenly.

When ethical violations become normalized.

When loyalty supersedes principle.

Strong democracies require a shared civic expectation that:

• rules matter,

• institutions matter,

• and no individual exists entirely beyond public accountability.

Not selectively.

Not only when politically convenient.

But consistently.

Because once accountability itself becomes politicized, institutional trust begins eroding at its foundation.

One of the most important historical lessons about democratic resilience is that societies are rarely protected by singular moments of public outrage alone.

More often, democratic preservation depends upon sustained civic engagement over time.

Not every contribution must be dramatic.

Often the most stabilizing actions are persistent rather than spectacular:

• local organizing,

• public participation,

• institutional advocacy,

• peaceful protest,

• legal defense work,

• investigative reporting,

• educational work,

• and ordinary citizens remaining attentive rather than withdrawing into cynicism.

Democratic systems are reinforced through repetition and continuity as much as through crisiis.

Institutions do not defend themselves automatically.

People inside them do.

Teachers.

Judges.

Election workers.

Civil servants.

Journalists.

Military officials.

Attorneys.

Local administrators.

History repeatedly shows that democratic systems often survive because enough individuals within institutions continue honoring professional ethics and constitutional obligations even during periods of political pressure.

Often quietly.

Sometimes imperfectly.

But decisively.

And perhaps most importantly: the refusal to disengage

One of the greatest advantages authoritarian movements possess is public exhaustion.

Democratic erosion accelerates when populations become overwhelmed enough to detach from civic life altogether.

Which is why sustained engagement matters — even when it feels frustrating, slow, repetitive, or incomplete.

Not obsessive engagement.

Not panic.

But continued attention.

Because disengagement weakens democratic guardrails faster than almost anything else.

None of this requires perfection.

Democratic citizenship does not require encyclopedic knowledge, constant outrage, or ideological purity.

What it requires is something quieter and more durable:

Attention.

Discernment.

Historical memory.

Institutional seriousness.

In June of 2002, a gay man named Jeffery Owens was stabbed to death outside a gay bar in downtown Riverside.

He was 40 years old.

That night, Owens had been out celebrating a friend’s birthday at a local LGBTQ+ nightclub called the Menagerie with several friends, including Michael Bussee.

Years later, Bussee would describe the evening this way:

“It was just before midnight and peaceful downtown…”

Then, without warning, everything changed.

According to Bussee, a group of young men suddenly charged them in the parking lot.

“One sucker punched me in the face. Jeffery saw this and came to my defense.”

The attack escalated quickly. The men beat Owens, knocked him to the pavement, and kicked him repeatedly before speeding away in a truck. Believing the assault was over, the group left the parking lot to regroup elsewhere.

Then the phone rang.

“On the way to Jeffery’s house, my cellphone rang. His husband (also named Jeff — we called him “big Jeff”) said, “Don’t meet us at our house. Meet us at the hospital.” I asked why. Big Jeff said, “Little Jeff has been stabbed and is bleeding badly.” I was shocked. My friend in the car with me said, “Mike, lift up your shirt”. I did. Chris said, “You’ve been stabbed too!”

Owens had been stabbed multiple times.

Bussee soon realized he had been stabbed too.

“You would think that you would know if someone stabbed you.”

The knife had punctured his lung.

Jeffery Owens did not survive.

The murder devastated Riverside.

Not only the LGBTQ+ community.
The entire city.

Hundreds of people gathered in the days that followed — clergy, activists, parents, students, elderly residents, city officials, ordinary people horrified that such violence had happened in their community.

Candlelight vigils formed.
People marched silently to City Hall.
Flowers accumulated at the site of the attack.

And then something small began appearing on the sidewalks nearby.

Messages written in chalk.

Words of grief.
Words of hope.
Words of solidarity.

Someone would write one.
Another person would add another.
Then another.

Tiny acts of resistance appearing on concrete.

Not permanent.
Not dramatic.
Not powerful in the traditional sense.

Just people trying to answer hatred with humanity.

That detail is powerful.

Not only the brutality of the murder.

The chalk.

Because hatred always tries to leave the final mark.

And sometimes one of the most important things human beings can do is refuse to let it.

Not through vengeance.
Not through spectacle.
But through visible acts of tenderness.

A candle in a parking lot.
Flowers left where someone died.
Messages written on sidewalks.
People gathering together instead of retreating into fear.

Those things matter more than we sometimes realize.

This story carries another layer as well.

Michael Bussee was not simply a survivor of the attack.

Years earlier, he had been one of the founders of Exodus International — one of the most influential organizations in the modern ex-gay and conversion therapy movement.

In the 1970s, while working as a counselor at Melodyland Christian Center in California, Bussee helped establish some of the earliest organized “ex-gay” ministries. Eventually, those efforts grew into Exodus International — an organization that spent decades promoting the belief that LGBTQ+ people could and should change.

But over time, Bussee began publicly questioning the movement he helped create, left Exodus and became a passionate LGBTQ+ advocate who spoke openly about the damage caused by shame-based theology, anti-gay messaging, and conversion therapy practices. And later devoted much of his life to helping LGBTQ+ people heal from the harm caused by conversion therapy, non affirming theology and religious trauma.

Stories like this reveal the collision between ideology and human reality.

Because no amount of fear, denial, theology, or performance can erase a person’s humanity.

And perhaps that is part of what makes this story linger.

Not only because of the violence.
But because of the vulnerability inside it.

In the story Bussee shared years later, one line especially stands out:

“The experience was a wake-up call for me. I thought violence against LGBT people only happened elsewhere.”

Many people still believe that.

That hatred exists somewhere else.
In another town.
Another state.
Another era.
Another kind of family.
Another church.
Another political movement.

Until suddenly it doesn’t.

Long before physical violence happens, there is usually a cultural conditioning process.

People are mocked.
Turned into political talking points.
Described as dangerous.
Described as threats.
Described as less deserving of dignity, safety, or belonging.

Eventually, some people absorb those messages.

That is why visible acts of support matter so much.

Visible love interrupts visible hatred.

It reminds people they are not alone.

After the murder, Bussee has returned to the memorial site.

He tended the flowers.
He cared for the space.
He stood publicly in grief alongside the community.

And every year afterward, he continued a quiet ritual:

“Each year I draw a message of hope in chalk…”

That sentence feels especially important.

Because chalk disappears.

Rain washes it away.
Footsteps fade it.
Time removes it.

And still people keep writing.

Perhaps that is the lesson.

Hope is not something human beings create once.

It is something we choose again and again.

The murder of Jeffery Owens became a turning point in Riverside. Community leaders organized hearings around discrimination and safety. Activists pushed for accountability and inclusion. The city’s Human Relations Commission expanded its work. Eventually, a community center would be named in Owens’ honor.

But the chalk says something important …

A fragile thing.
Temporary.
Easily erased.

And yet powerful enough that someone kept coming back year after year to write hope anyway.

That is how the world changes.

Not only through laws and headlines and court rulings.

But through ordinary people deciding that hatred will not be the only thing visible in public.

Perhaps stories that change the world are not stories about perfect heroes.

Perhaps they are stories about imperfect people choosing tenderness anyway.

Stories about people refusing to let cruelty have the final word.

Texas Children’s Hospital — one of the largest and most respected pediatric hospitals in the country — has reached a settlement with the Texas Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice that goes far beyond simply ending gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

Under the agreement, the hospital will reportedly:

• Pay $10 million

• Fire multiple physicians involved in transgender care

• Create what officials are calling the nation’s first “detransition clinic”

• And formally adopt a framework built around the idea that transition itself is harmful.

That last part matters.

Because this is not simply about one hospital changing services.

It reflects something much larger happening across the country.

We are increasingly seeing efforts not only to restrict access to gender-affirming care, but to redefine the entire medical narrative around transgender people.

To shift the conversation from:

“Some transgender youth benefit from this care”

to:

“Transition itself should be viewed as damage.”

And once that framework becomes institutionalized inside major medical systems, the implications become enormous.

It affects:

• future healthcare policy

• insurance coverage

• medical training

• hospital risk calculations

• provider willingness to offer care

• and public perception of transgender people themselves.

Major medical organizations including the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics continue to support gender-affirming care for transgender youth when appropriately provided.

But increasingly, hospitals are being placed under immense political, legal, and financial pressure.

And many families are watching in real time as access to care disappears, not because the underlying medical consensus changed, but because the risks of continuing to provide that care are becoming harder for institutions to withstand.

What is happening here is bigger than one hospital.

It is part of a growing effort to reshape how transgender identity itself is understood within American medicine.

What does democratic erosion actually look like in practice?

Because if these shifts rarely occur all at once, if they develop incrementally over time, how does a society recognize when ordinary political conflict is evolving into something more structurally concerning?

One of the defining characteristics of democratic backsliding is that there is rarely a single moment when everything suddenly becomes unmistakably clear.

There is no universal tipping point.
No flashing warning light.

Instead, what emerges are patterns:
subtle institutional shifts,
changes in political norms,
and accumulations of power that may appear individually explainable, yet collectively begin pointing in a discernible direction.

This is precisely why scholars of authoritarianism and democratic decline focus less on isolated events and more on trajectories.

The question is not simply:
“What happened?”

But rather:
“What direction is the system moving in?”

Across historical and contemporary examples, several warning signs appear with notable consistency.

The weakening of independent institutions

Independent institutions exist to constrain concentrated power.

Courts.
Election systems.
Independent civil servants.
Regulatory agencies.
Watchdog organizations.
A free press.

These structures are not incidental to democratic systems; they are foundational safeguards against the overconcentration of authority.

Which is why it matters when political leaders begin:

• pressuring or delegitimizing judges

• replacing nonpartisan officials with political loyalists

• undermining oversight bodies or inspectors general

• portraying institutional accountability as obstruction rather than protection

Historically, one of the clearest indicators of democratic erosion is not the elimination of institutions outright, but the gradual weakening of their independence and credibility.

Because once institutional guardrails become compromised, the constraints on power begin weakening as well.

The erosion of trust in elections

Democracy depends not only on elections themselves, but on broad public confidence that electoral outcomes remain legitimate and meaningful.

This is why democratic scholars pay close attention not only to voting laws, but also to political rhetoric surrounding elections.

Warning signs often include:

• repeated claims that elections cannot be trusted without compelling evidence

• efforts to overturn or invalidate legitimate outcomes

• increasing normalization of the idea that unfavorable results are inherently suspect

• attempts to limit or delegitimize participation by certain groups

The long-term danger is not merely political polarization.

It is the erosion of public faith in the idea that democratic participation still carries meaningful power.

Once that belief weakens, democratic stability itself becomes more fragile.

The blurring of public authority and private interest

This is one of the clearest intersections between plutocracy and authoritarianism.

Healthy democratic systems attempt—however imperfectly—to maintain distinctions between public service and private enrichment.

But when political systems increasingly reward economic loyalty and economic systems increasingly depend upon political access, those boundaries begin to erode.

Warning signs include:

• political insiders benefiting financially from public office

• regulatory systems disproportionately favoring connected elites

• weakening conflict-of-interest standards

• concentration of influence among narrow political and economic networks

Over time, this reshapes the function of governance itself.

Institutions designed to serve the broader public interest can gradually become mechanisms for protecting entrenched concentrations of wealth and power.

The prioritization of loyalty over expertise

Historically, democratic systems function best when institutions retain a degree of professional independence.

Which is why one particularly significant warning sign is the replacement of expertise with personal or ideological loyalty.

This often appears through:

• purges or marginalization of experienced officials

• the appointment of loyalists to oversight positions

• punishment of internal dissent

• increasing hostility toward technocratic or evidence-based constraints on leadership

This shift matters because internal institutional resistance is one of the primary ways democracies prevent overreach.

When loyalty becomes the central organizing principle of governance, systems become less accountable and more vulnerable to concentrated authority.

The distortion of the information environment

Democratic societies require shared access to credible information.

Not unanimous agreement—but a broadly functional reality-based public sphere.

This becomes increasingly difficult when:

• independent journalism is systematically delegitimized

• critical reporting is dismissed as inherently hostile or fraudulent

• partisan ecosystems replace shared informational standards

• confusion and distrust become politically advantageous

Authoritarian movements historically benefit not only from censorship, but from informational fragmentation itself.

Because when citizens lose confidence in their ability to distinguish fact from manipulation, accountability becomes significantly harder to sustain.

The normalization of democratic erosion

Perhaps the most subtle warning sign is normalization itself.

Over time, practices that once felt extraordinary begin to feel routine.

Public reactions become muted.
Institutional breaches lose their shock value.
Civic disengagement increases.
Expectations gradually recalibrate downward.

Importantly, normalization does not indicate that concerns were exaggerated.

Often, it indicates that populations are adapting psychologically to incremental change.

History repeatedly demonstrates that societies can become accustomed to shifts that would once have felt deeply alarming.

It is important to remain intellectually grounded here.

Any one of these dynamics can emerge temporarily within functioning democracies.

Political systems are inherently imperfect, contentious, and unstable to varying degrees.

The concern arises when multiple warning signs begin converging simultaneously, particularly over sustained periods of time.

That is when broader structural patterns become more difficult to dismiss as isolated events.

Reasonable people will interpret these developments differently.

But regardless of one’s political perspective, the ability to recognize patterns of institutional weakening remains critically important.

Because this conversation is not fundamentally about reacting emotionally to daily headlines.

It is about evaluating trajectories of power.

Are democratic guardrails becoming stronger or weaker?

Are institutions becoming more independent or more politically vulnerable?

Is accountability expanding—or narrowing?
