And a few of these are especially important: one teething toy has already been involved in four choking incidents, another similar toy has been linked to nine reports of children beginning to choke, and magnetic building blocks are tied to a case in which a child reportedly swallowed about 50 magnets and required surgery.

I used to roll my eyes a little at people who said “nothing prepares you for this.” Cute, I thought. I run a safety brand. I do my research. I have a system for everything! I will be fine.

Let me tell you, my first day home after having my second baby: I was not fine. I am still not fine. But I am one month into having two children under two, and I have Thoughts, so let’s talk about it.

The math doesn’t math

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: one baby is a full-time job. Two kids where one is still basically a baby is not “double the work” — it’s some exponential function I don’t have the brain cells left to calculate. My toddler wants me at exactly the moment the newborn wants me. Every time.

I’ve stopped trying to win. Some days my toddler watches more TV than I’d like. Nobody has died. Everyone is fed. I’m calling that a win.

The MVP nobody’s talking about: my husband

Can we talk about partners for a second? Because I don’t think this whole “2 under 2” thing works without one who actually shows up. My husband has taken on the bulk of toddler care these past four weeks — the meals, the meltdowns, the fourteenth reading of the same book — and it is, without exaggeration, the thing saving me.

I want to be honest about the other side of that, though, because nobody warned me: it’s also been insanely hard emotionally. For almost two years, I’ve been my toddler’s primary person. I know her rhythms, her cues, her particular brand of chaos, better than anyone. Watching someone else (even someone I trust completely) take over that role has hit me way harder than I expected. There’s been more crying in this house than just the newborn’s, and I don’t think that’s just the hormones talking (though the hormones are absolutely a factor — postpartum hormonal shifts are real and they are not subtle).

If you’re in this season too, here’s the thing I keep telling myself, and I actually believe it: if your toddler is safe, cared for, and comfortable, that’s a win — full stop. She is not going to remember this stretch. She is not going to feel abandoned. She’s getting a different kind of attention right now, not less love. This is not forever. A new normal is coming.

On that note — take the help. With my first, I felt like I had to prove I could do it all myself. This time, I’m saying yes to everything: friends dropping off dinner, grandparents taking a shift with the toddler or the baby, whatever it is. I’m letting myself breathe instead of white-knuckling through it. If someone offers, let them.

The breastfeeding guilt nobody prepares you for

Nursing a newborn is hard on its own. Nursing a newborn while also trying to be present for a toddler adds a layer of guilt I wasn’t ready for. Cluster feeding means being couch-bound for stretches at a time, and broken sleep from round-the-clock feeds catches up fast. It gets overwhelming quickly.

For anyone in the thick of establishing a supply: most lactation consultants describe milk supply as a process, not a switch — production typically ramps up substantially in the first couple of weeks, with things becoming more fully regulated somewhere in the four-to-twelve-week range, and that timeline genuinely varies person to person. Reaching out to a lactation consultant early, even in the first few days, can help catch common issues like latch problems before they snowball, and persistent pain during nursing (beyond typical early tenderness) is one of the clearer signs it’s worth getting a second set of eyes on things — not something you have to just push through.

But — and this is the part I want to say loudly — there is no one “right” path here. I knew I wanted to offer breastmilk, and I was fully at peace with combo or formula feeding if anything came up. That’s exactly where we’ve landed: some nursing, some pumping and bottles, some formula. We’re still finding our rhythm. But right now, for my own mental health, I needed to not be the only source of food 24/7. I needed enough separation to shower, spend time with my toddler, and feel like a person — because if I don’t take care of that, I can’t actually show up for either of my kids. Fed is fed. However you get there is valid.

What’s actually saving me (the unsexy truth)

I thought I’d need a million gadgets. Here’s what’s actually in daily rotation.

A carrier I can move in. Hands-free isn’t a luxury right now, it’s survival — making dinner, putting my toddler down for a nap, even just brushing my teeth all become possible without putting the baby down.

A diaper caddy for the living room. My newborn’s room shares a wall with my toddler’s, and I am not risking a wake-up every time there’s a diaper to change. Keeping a fully-stocked caddy in the living room means I almost never have to go near that door mid-nap.

An instant bottle warmer, right on my nightstand. We combo feed with formula overnight, and this has been a game-changer for 3am bottles — no trip to the kitchen, no waiting around half-asleep for water to heat up. I press a button and it’s ready in under a minute. Also super helpful if I have to make a bottle during a chaotic moment in the day.

A bedside caddy to corral the overnight chaos. Diapers, an extra set of pajamas, my Haakaa, all in one spot so my nightstand stays clear. Clutter is a real trigger for me postpartum, and having a dedicated “everything lives here” spot has quietly done a lot for my sanity at 3am.

Toys that let my toddler play independently for a few minutes at a time. I need her occupied in short bursts while I’m tending to the baby, without it being a screen. We just added the new Toniebox Lite to our rotation and it’s been great for this — small enough to toss in a bag and take anywhere, and it gives her something to do on her own while I’m mid-diaper-change or mid-feed.

I would never recommend a product I don’t stand behind and we genuinely love both our regular-size Toniebox and our new travel size! It’ll go on sale at Walmart and tonies.com on August 22nd, before launching at all other retailers on October 23rd.

Silverettes. If you’re nursing, do yourself this favor before the pain starts, not after. Cheap insurance against a genuinely miserable problem.

A three-pouch system for the diaper bag. This one sounds small but it’s honestly changed how I function out of the house. I keep three separate pouches: one for my toddler (diapers in her size, a change of clothes, snacks, etc), one for the newborn (diapers in his size, a change of clothes, pacifiers, etc), and one shared pouch for the stuff they both need — wipes, hand sanitizer, band-aids, etc. When something goes sideways in public, I’m grabbing one labeled pouch instead of rifling through the whole bag with a crying kid attached. I also love that I’m not attached to just one specific diaper bag — I can throw whatever pouches I need into any purse/bag and we’re good to go.

A wagon with a car seat adapter. This has been the surprise MVP of our whole setup. We’re using the Baby Trend Expedition — the infant car seat clips right into the adapter, my toddler rides alongside in the wagon, and suddenly walks are actually possible again with both kids. One safety note if you go this route: only use adapters made for your specific car seat and wagon models, and make sure the click is fully secured every time — mismatched adapters are one of the more common ways these setups fail.

A good bouncer or swing. A lifesaver for the moments I need two free hands. Quick safety reminder since this is the kind of thing I’d flag either way: swings and bouncers are for supervised, awake time only — the AAP is clear that babies should always sleep on a firm, flat surface, never in a sitting device like a swing, car seat, or bouncer, since the reclined position can let a newborn’s head fall forward and restrict their airway.

None of this is groundbreaking. That’s kind of the point. One month in, “groundbreaking” is not a category I have energy for.

The part I’m not going to sugarcoat

Some days the mental load feels like the heaviest part, heavier than the sleep deprivation. Two kids means two sets of needs I’m tracking simultaneously, and there’s a specific kind of tired that comes from never fully finishing a thought because someone needs you mid-sentence. I don’t have a tidy solution for this one. I just think it’s worth saying out loud, because the version of this on social media is not always realistic.

So, is it hard?

Yes. Obviously. But it’s also the first time I’ve watched my toddler kiss her brother’s head unprompted, and I forgot every hard thing for about six seconds. I can almost see a glimpse of the future, where they are (hopefully) besties and love playing together. I’ll take the trade.

I’ll be honest about the recall/safety side of all of this too, as always — a couple of the mentioned product categories (swings, wagon adapters especially) have real safety considerations worth knowing before you buy, especially secondhand. As I get ready to have our second baby, I’ve noticed hospital bag packing lists have basically become their own category of consumerism. Three separate bags. Dozens of postpartum products. Outfits for every hypothetical scenario.

That’s not me.

If you’re someone who feels overwhelmed by too much stuff (same), you don’t need more stuff — you just need the right stuff. And I honestly hate unpacking. So the less I bring home, the happier I am.

For both of my deliveries, everything for all three of us has fit into one carry-on-sized roller bag. Easier to pack, easier to move through hospital hallways and parking garages, easier to unpack when you’re running on no sleep.

Rule One: Skip the Duffel Bag

This might be my strongest hospital bag opinion: bring a roller bag, not a duffel.

A small carry-on roller suitcase → is so much easier to maneuver through hallways, elevators, and garages than a bag slung over your shoulder — especially when you’re moving slowly and holding a baby. We’ve fit everything for our whole family into one, twice now.

For Dad: Keep It Simple

He genuinely doesn’t need much:

• Two pairs of pajamas or comfortable loungewear

• One outfit to wear home

• Basic toiletries

• iPad

• AirPods or headphones

Most hospitals feed your support person depending on the facility, and realistically, he’ll be more focused on you and the baby than on outfit options.

For Baby

Clothing: two footed pajamas, two onesies (we’re expecting a summer baby), and a going-home outfit. Babies spend most of their hospital stay swaddled, so a full wardrobe isn’t necessary.

Swaddles: I’m bringing two styles — the Love to Dream Arms Up Swaddle → and the HALO Velcro Swaddle →. Every baby has preferences, so I like having both on hand.

Burp cloths: the hospital provides plenty, but their linens can feel a little rough. I always bring a few of my own → for that reason.

Announcement pieces: a personalized sweater with his name and the same announcement blanket we used for our daughter. Not essential — just meaningful to us.

Diaper balm: I’ll admit this one is mostly superstition. We used Earth Mama Diaper Balm → with my daughter from day one and she never had a single rash. I haven’t touched another brand since.

Pacifiers: most hospitals provide a Philips Avent Soothie, which works fine — but I bring a couple other options in case this baby has a preference.

For Me

Pajamas, two ways. Night one, I go with a nightgown → — easiest option when nurses are checking on you constantly. Night two, a soft button-down pajama set →, which is breastfeeding-friendly and makes me feel slightly more human.

Going-home outfit: nothing fancy — comfortable, loose, weather-appropriate. This time, I’m going with this matching set →.

Compression shorts or underwear. This is one of my strongest postpartum opinions: I find compression shorts → or underwear → more comfortable and more effective than a belly band, and I wear them under my going-home outfit and for several weeks after giving birth.

Nursing bras: 2–3, enough to rotate without overpacking. Shop mine →

Robe and towel: the hospital provides both, but I bring my own robe and towel anyway. A familiar one makes the room feel less clinical.

Shower shoes → and slippers: non-negotiable.

Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, chapstick, lotion, hair ties, a hair clip, skincare, and tinted sunscreen. But here’s the real advice — bring the nice shower products. A body scrub, a loofah, the shower gel you’re saving for a special occasion. That first postpartum shower is genuinely one of the best of your life. Make it feel that way.

Small postpartum recovery kit:

• 4–5 adult diapers — I prefer Rael period underwear → over the hospital’s mesh underwear and giant pads

• Angled peri bottle → — once you use one, it’s hard to go back

• Nipple butter →

• Silverettes →

Anything else you could possibly need, the hospital will have.

The Extras That Earned Their Spot

Not necessities, but each one pulled its weight enough to make the cut.

For labor: portable fan →, labor comb →, weighted lavender eye mask →

For the room: two 10-foot phone chargers →, a portable sound machine →, and an egg light → for overnight feeds — overhead hospital lighting gets old fast, and a soft light helps everyone sleep a little better.

For feeding: a breastfeeding pillow → — not required, but useful enough to earn the space.

Entertainment: Kindle and/or iPad. I probably won’t touch them much, but they’re nice to have if labor runs long or the baby sleeps unexpectedly well.

Snacks: always. The food at our hospital actually isn’t bad, but it’s nice to have some favorites ready to go when you’re hungry.

A Gift From the Baby

We’re bringing a small something “from” the baby for big sister — a Cookie Monster stuffy →, and a coloring book with mess-free markers →, since she’s currently obsessed with both. Whether gifts-from-baby actually smooth the sibling transition is debatable, but I think it’ll make for a sweet moment during that first visit.

The Bottom Line

Most baby packing lists are built around “just in case.” Sometimes that’s warranted. But most of the time, especially in a hospital, if you forget something — you’ll be okay. The hospital has supplies. Family can bring things. Stores exist.

I’d rather pack light, focus on recovery and bonding with my baby, and skip unpacking a suitcase full of things I never touched.

Minimalism isn’t about having less. It’s about having enough.
