Indri Signal Malt visited Redhead Whiskey Club yesterday and took us through the history and the production methods of Indian whiskey, as well as Indri specifically. Most of you know that India is the largest producer and consumer of whiskey in the world, and that is despite the contradicting fact that consumption per capita is one of the lowest in the world. Try to solve that puzzle.

Indian whisky started flourishing around the mid-20th century. One of the leaders to bring Indian single malts to its stardom about 30 years ago was Surrinder Kumar, who established Amrut and is now part of the Indri phenomenal team. We learned that Indri stores around 80,000 casks in one single warehouse location. The beautiful thing the Master Blender Surrinder offers is a wonderful mixture of casks. Indri offers wine, ex-bourbon, and sherry casks that are married into lucious blends. Facing 12% angel's share and 2% devil's cut, Indian single malt needs to be produced and ready to be consumed much faster than your average Scotch, bourbon, or rye.

The star of last night was no doubt Madhu, the distillery's rep. Knowledgeable, passionate, and humble.

We tasted six indri expressions, including:

1. Trini, the core expression that offers the marrying of three casks: ex-bourbon, sherry, and wine, where wine is most dominant. You can feel it in the chocolate and dry cherry notes.

2. Injuries flagship and staple, the Drew, which gives more intense coffee and a little bit of gentle spice notes.

3. Elegantly peated expression, which was one of the most favorite in the club.

Next two bottles were distillery bottles that will be released in 2027, and we are very thankful to Madhu and Indri for offering us a glimpse of what is to come. One was aged in cognac and the other one in Marsala wine cask. Both offering deep, sweet, and powerful flavors without being too punchy or overwhelming

The final dessert of the evening was the rum, which, to me, was one of the favorites of the night. For the night, it had a tiny hint of funkiness, made from pure sugar cane and with no additives. This one, to me, was one of the nicest surprises of the evening.
