More than 80 basketball officials from around the world recently gathered in Orlando for the 2026 RefMasters Camp, where they worked games at the PUMA National Finals and received direct instruction and feedback from NBA and leading NCAA clinicians.

The best officials are rarely defined by one call, one game or one evaluation. They are defined by the complete picture—their preparation, judgment, mechanics, communication, professionalism and willingness to improve.

That philosophy was reflected in the awards presented at the 2026 RefMasters Camp. Camper-Nominated Awards recognized officials and clinicians who made an impact through their energy, leadership, coachability and professionalism. RefScore Awards honored on-court performance and growth, while the Golden Jersey Award recognized the camper who best embodied RefMasters’ core principles throughout the entire camp experience. Together, the awards celebrated the many qualities that go into becoming a complete official.

Rules Champ: Tyler Pearre

Everything an official does begins with knowing the rules, and Tyler Pearre distinguished himself by earning the title of Rules Champ. Rules knowledge may not always be the most visible part of officiating, but it provides the foundation for every whistle, ruling and explanation.

The strongest officials do more than memorize the rulebook. They understand how the rules apply to actual game situations and can draw on that knowledge when a difficult or unusual play occurs. Pearre demonstrated that level of preparation during camp, and it would not be the last time his name was called.

Chosen by Their Peers

There is something especially meaningful about earning the respect of the people working alongside you. Fellow officials see how someone responds to feedback, supports a crew, handles adversity and carries themselves between games. The Camper-Nominated Awards recognized the people who made the camp experience better for everyone around them.

Darron George and Brandon Adair shared the Officials’ Choice Award, which honored the clinicians who made the greatest impact through their teaching, feedback and leadership. A good clinician can identify areas that need improvement, but a great clinician helps an official understand how to make that improvement. George and Adair earned the appreciation of the campers by investing in their development and helping them leave camp better than they arrived.

Grant Vermeer was named Best Crewmate, recognizing the kind of partner every official wants beside them. A strong crewmate communicates, supports the crew and understands that the best officiating happens when everyone works together. Vermeer’s willingness to help those around him succeed made him stand out among his peers.

Slate Robinson received the Yes Ref, Thank You Ref Award for professionalism. How an official accepts feedback, interacts with others and responds when challenged can be every bit as important as what happens while the clock is running. Robinson demonstrated the attitude and professionalism required to turn instruction into meaningful growth.

Julius Reed earned the Unlimited Energy Award for the consistent enthusiasm and effort he brought throughout camp. Tonio Caruso received the Runnin’ Ref Fitness Award, recognizing his conditioning, movement and commitment to being physically prepared for the demands of officiating. Johnny Arrington was named Signals Champ after demonstrating the clarity, confidence and control that allow an official’s signals to communicate a decision effectively.

Each award recognized a different quality, but all of them pointed toward the same truth: An official’s impact extends well beyond the calls they make.

Performance on the Court: The RefScore Awards

The RefScore Awards focused on on-court performance, development and the individual components that make up the craft of officiating. Corey Powell led the way by earning both the Mechanics Award and the camp’s Overall RefScore Award.

Strong mechanics put an official in the best position to see plays, process what happened and make a credible ruling. Powell’s performance in that area, combined with his work across the complete RefScore evaluation, distinguished him among the campers and earned him the top overall score.

Kristaps Konstantinovs earned the Playcalling Award for his ability to see, process and make decisions on plays. Effective playcalling requires an official to recognize what matters, understand how the action affects the play and avoid guessing when the necessary information is not available. Konstantinovs demonstrated those skills consistently during camp.

Brad Clive received the Game Management Award, highlighting the communication, awareness and judgment required to manage much more than the action between the lines. Isaiah Robinson earned the Presence Award by demonstrating the confidence and credibility that allow an official to command respect without becoming the center of attention. Both awards recognized qualities that can be difficult to measure but are easy to notice when an official possesses them.

Caden Olinger received the Mindset Award, an honor that speaks directly to the purpose of camp. Officials must be willing to accept feedback, make adjustments and move forward after mistakes. That ability to remain teachable and respond positively to coaching often separates officials who simply attend camp from those who grow because of it.

The Golden Jersey: Tyler Pearre

The Golden Jersey Award is selected by the RefMasters team and presented to the camper who best represents the organization’s core principles both on and off the court. For 2026, that honor belonged to Tyler Pearre.

Pearre had already distinguished himself as Rules Champ, but the Golden Jersey recognized something broader than rules knowledge or any single area of performance. It reflected the totality of his camp experience—how he performed, learned, interacted with others, responded to coaching and represented the values RefMasters wants officials to carry with them after camp.

There are plenty of opportunities during camp to demonstrate what kind of calls an official can make. There are just as many opportunities to show what kind of partner, student and person that official will be when the game becomes difficult or the feedback is not easy to hear. Pearre’s complete body of work earned him the camp’s highest recognition.

The Work Continues

The awards recognized what happened at RefMasters Camp, but development does not end when the final game is complete and everyone heads home. Rules knowledge, mechanics, playcalling, game management, presence, mindset, fitness, professionalism and teamwork all require continued attention.

No single quality makes a great official. The process involves strengthening every part of the craft while remaining honest about the areas that still need work. An award can recognize progress, but the most valuable thing an official can bring home from camp is a clearer understanding of what comes next.

Congratulations to all of the 2026 RefMasters Camp Award winners, and especially to Tyler Pearre as the recipient of this year’s Golden Jersey Award. Each honoree demonstrated an important part of what RefMasters Camp is designed to develop, and each now has an opportunity to build on that experience.

For officials who want to continue that development between camps and assignments, RefMasters University provides a place to keep learning alongside fellow officials and experienced instructors. Because the work that begins at camp becomes most valuable when it continues throughout the season.

There are some rules we deal with every week, and there are others that might come up once or twice all season. Post-scrimmage kick enforcement probably falls into that second category for most of us. Nobody is driving to a game thinking, Man, I hope we get a good PSK play tonight. But here’s the problem: when it does happen, we’ve got to nail it. That’s one of the things I’ve learned throughout my career, and it’s something that remains true at the NFL level. The unusual situations are often the ones that test how well you really understand the game.

That’s also why I don’t think it’s enough to simply memorize a rule. You’ve got to understand why the rule exists and what it’s trying to accomplish within the game. We recently spent a RefMasters University session digging into PSK, and yes, we nerded out on the rules a little bit. There’s nothing wrong with that. But before we started breaking down plays, I wanted everyone to understand the philosophy behind what we were about to see. PSK may not be at the top of your offseason study list, but it’s going to happen eventually. When it does, you can’t be the person on the crew giving everybody that weird look because you aren’t sure what comes next.

The basic requirements aren’t terribly difficult to memorize. We’re primarily talking about punt plays. The kick has to cross the neutral zone. The foul has to be by the receiving team, beyond the neutral zone and during the kick, and the receiving team ultimately has to be the team legally entitled to put the ball in play. You can put all of that on a flash card and learn it for a test, but I want officials to take the next step and think about what’s actually happening on the football field. If you understand the football behind the rule, the enforcement starts to make a lot more sense.

Think about what happens when the kicking team brings its punt team onto the field. They’ve essentially decided to give up possession, and once they kick the football, we begin to see what I think of as a reversal of roles. The receiving team is becoming the offense, while the kicking team is becoming the defense. That’s really the spirit behind PSK. The rules recognize that the kicking team willingly gave up the football, so we have an enforcement structure that allows the receiving team to retain possession while still being penalized for a foul it commits while setting up that return.

Once you understand that philosophy, some complicated-looking plays become easier to process. We looked at one play where a receiving-team player engages a kicking-team player near the line. You see the kicking-team player get grabbed and go to the ground, and your first reaction might be, That’s a foul. But before you put air in the whistle, think about what that receiving-team player is actually doing. He’s no longer really acting like a defensive player. He’s blocking. He’s trying to keep that kicking-team player from getting downfield and tackling the returner. The roles have changed, and understanding that change helps us properly evaluate the action we’re seeing.

That gets to a larger point about how I believe we should study football. We’re not simply asking, “What did I see?” We also need to ask, “Why is this player doing it?” Those are two different questions, and that second question provides context. On these plays, I like using a simple test: Is he trying to block the kick, or is he trying to set up the return? If the action is designed to facilitate the return, and all the other requirements of the rule are satisfied, that helps point us toward PSK enforcement. If he’s still trying to penetrate and make a play on the kick, that’s different.

Obviously, that isn’t a substitute for knowing the rule. The rule still governs the enforcement, and there are no shortcuts around having strong rules knowledge. But understanding how football is actually being played gives us context for applying those rules. That’s something officials at every level can take from this. Don’t just memorize what the rule says. Study why it says it. Ask yourself what the rule is trying to accomplish, what advantage it’s addressing and what football philosophy is behind it. I’ve always felt that when we understand the spirit and philosophy behind a rule, it becomes much easier to administer that rule contextually within the flow of a game.

That matters because you don’t get to stop the game and work through a rules quiz. You’ve got seconds to see the action, process what happened, communicate with your crew, enforce it correctly and get ready for the next play. When something unusual happens, understanding the philosophy gives you another tool to work through the situation instead of relying solely on whether you can remember a sentence from the rulebook. The better you understand football—not just the rules of football—the better equipped you’re going to be when the game gives you something you weren’t expecting.

And that preparation doesn’t change when you reach the NFL. When we held this RefMasters University session, I was on the road watching my daughter play softball before heading to Tampa for an NFL officiating clinic. We were getting together as a staff to work on conditioning, new rules, mechanics and preparation for the upcoming season. That’s the reality at this level. We’re still studying, watching film, talking through plays and preparing for situations that may or may not happen this season. You don’t reach a certain level and suddenly have all the answers. If anything, the expectation that you’re prepared for the unusual becomes even greater.

That’s also why I enjoy what we’re doing with RefMasters University. It gives officials a place to have these kinds of conversations—to pull up the film, talk through the rule and understand the philosophy behind it alongside people who are doing the same work. Whether you’re preparing for Friday night or Sunday afternoon, the process really isn’t that different. You study, you watch film, you talk football and you prepare for the situations that might eventually find you. When that strange play finally does show up in your game, you don’t want to simply remember that you once read the rule. You want to understand why it’s there and how it fits the game you’re officiating.

For most officials, the goal is never to become famous. It is to earn the next assignment, work the next big game and be trusted when the pressure is at its highest. Joey Crawford did that for nearly four decades. On August 15, his journey reached basketball’s most celebrated stage when he was formally inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of its Class of 2026.

Following his induction, RefMasters had an opportunity to catch up with Crawford and ask him to reflect on his career, the people who shaped it and the lessons he learned through both his greatest successes and most difficult moments. His answers revealed something deeper than the accomplishments listed beside his name. They revealed an official who remains proud of what he achieved but is also honest about the mistakes he made, the people who helped him and the responsibility officials have to one another.

Crawford entered the Hall alongside some of basketball’s most recognizable names, including Candace Parker, Amar’e Stoudemire, Doc Rivers, Elena Delle Donne and Mike D’Antoni. He did not score a point, draw up a play or assemble a championship roster. He earned his place one decision at a time, wearing a whistle and accepting the responsibility that comes with making calls in front of millions of people.

The numbers alone explain why Crawford belongs in Springfield. During 39 seasons in the NBA, he officiated 2,561 regular-season games, an NBA-record 374 playoff games and 50 NBA Finals games. He worked at least one Finals game in nearly every season from 1986 through 2015. Those assignments were not ceremonial. They were earned through decades of performance and the league’s confidence that Crawford could handle basketball at its highest level.

Crawford’s relationship with officiating began long before he reached the NBA. His father, Shag Crawford, spent 20 years as a Major League Baseball umpire, while his older brother, Jerry, also enjoyed a long career in the major leagues. Joey chose basketball, working Catholic Youth Organization games around Philadelphia before progressing through high school basketball and the Eastern League. He was only 26 when the NBA hired him in 1977.

His Hall of Fame recognition, Crawford said, belongs as much to the people around him as it does to him.

“The recognition is for my family and my dad, who started my love affair with officiating,” Crawford told RefMasters. “I hope the referees I worked with knew that I was with them nightly and that they were a big part of my success.”

That loyalty to his partners became one of the defining qualities of Crawford’s career. He was known as an official with an unmistakable personality and commanding presence, but his understanding of the profession extended beyond his own calls. To Crawford, the crew mattered. Protecting the officials beside him mattered. When he looks back on the moment that best captured what it meant to be an NBA referee, he does not point to a Finals game or a celebrated individual performance. Instead, he remembers his first game with Tim Duncan after returning from suspension.

“I did not want my partners to be thrown into a situation that we could not climb ourselves out of,” Crawford said. “I was the crew chief, and I was supposed to be the crew’s protector. My partners wound up being my protector. I was proud of my partners that night. That proved to me that is what an NBA referee is about—protecting one another.”

The suspension followed Crawford’s highly publicized ejection of Duncan during a 2007 game. It remains one of the most discussed officiating incidents in NBA history. Crawford does not avoid the subject or attempt to shift responsibility for what happened. He readily admits that his emotions and ego took him somewhere they never should have gone.

“Going through the experience of being suspended when I threw Tim Duncan out of a game needlessly was very trying for my family,” Crawford said. “I should have handled that in a better fashion. I did not know if my career was going to continue. Luckily, I was reinstated a few months after the incident. I put my family in the crosshairs, and my ego got the best of me.”

It is an important admission because it speaks to a reality every official eventually encounters. The calls are public, but the consequences can become personal. A difficult night does not always end when the officials leave the floor. Crawford had reached the highest level, worked the biggest games and established himself as one of the NBA’s leading officials, yet he still experienced a moment that forced him to question whether his career would continue.

That experience ultimately helped him become a better official. It reinforced lessons mentors had been offering him throughout his career—lessons that Crawford now shares with officials in his work as a referee performance development advisor.

“I had one piece of advice from a number of my mentors: calm down,” Crawford said. “I had numerous mentors call me and communicate that to me. I was lucky. The feedback was fabulous, and to this day, in my current role, I use the information that was presented to me 50 years ago. A lot of it is still relevant.”

Those two words—calm down—might sound simple, but they address one of the hardest parts of officiating. Officials must make immediate decisions in an emotional environment without allowing that emotion to control them. Confidence is necessary, but confidence without discipline can become confrontation. Presence is important, but presence cannot become performance. Crawford spent much of his career learning how to maintain his personality while managing the game more effectively.

That process began well before the Duncan incident. During his third NBA season, Crawford ejected Golden State Warriors coach Al Attles, one of the league’s most respected figures. The ejection came during a stretch in which Crawford had removed several people from games in the same month.

“I was beside myself,” Crawford recalled. “I went back to the hotel and did not sleep. I told myself that I had to get myself under control. I had hiccups, but at least I was aware of the hiccups.”

That self-awareness matters. Officials will have difficult games. They will miss calls, mishandle conversations and occasionally recognize that their own response made a situation worse. Development begins with the willingness to admit it. Crawford did not become a Hall of Famer because he was perfect. He became one because he possessed the ability to reach the highest level, the resilience to remain there and the honesty to confront the parts of his officiating that needed to change.

Perfection, however, was always the standard Crawford chased. Looking back, he recognizes that the pursuit sometimes prevented him from appreciating what was happening around him. If he could sit down with the 25-year-old version of himself, his advice would have little to do with rules, mechanics or technical fouls.

“Enjoy the ride, because there are going to be many ups and downs in this profession,” Crawford said. “For 39 years, when the game started, to me it was life and death. I should have enjoyed the games more. I wanted my partners and myself to be perfect, and that is impossible.”

That lesson became especially clear when Crawford received his first assignment to officiate Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Jake O’Donnell, a tremendous official who had never received that assignment himself, called Crawford before the game.

“He said, ‘I have never worked a Game 7 in the Finals. There aren’t many, so you better savor this experience,’” Crawford recalled. “I tell the current referees to savor their experiences because being an NBA referee is special.”

The significance of that message reaches far beyond the NBA. Officials are often so focused on the next level that they overlook the significance of the level they have already reached. There is always another camp, another conference, another postseason round or another championship assignment to pursue. Ambition can drive improvement, but it can also make an official move through meaningful experiences without fully appreciating them.

Crawford first realized that he might belong in the NBA when he received his first two playoff assignments. They were more than games on a schedule. They were confirmation that the league trusted him when the stakes increased.

“It dawned on me that I could build off of this if I listened to my mentors and didn’t go sideways,” Crawford said. “Stay the course. Just keep getting better.”

That is how a career is built. Not with one perfect game or one fortunate break, but by stacking together nights of dependable work and responding properly when things go wrong. Crawford’s career included both. There were unforgettable assignments and painful mistakes, moments of complete confidence and moments that forced him to examine himself. Through it all, he stayed the course.

Young officials naturally see Crawford’s presence and wonder how they can develop that same credibility. His answer is not to copy his mannerisms, signals or personality. Confidence built through imitation will eventually feel artificial. An official’s presence has to fit who that official actually is.

“Referees have to be themselves,” Crawford said. “They can’t copy me. Be yourself, and with the experiences you garner through the years, apply the ones that work. The ones that don’t work, throw them in the toilet.”

Experience, then, is not simply about accumulating games. It is about learning which habits make you better and which ones prevent you from becoming the official you are capable of being. Film review, mentorship and honest feedback accelerate that process. They allow officials to see what they may not recognize on their own and to benefit from lessons someone else has already learned the hard way.

Crawford became the 19th referee inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. His enshrinement is a personal honor, but it also matters to every official working in a high school gym, a college arena or a professional building. It reminds the basketball world that officiating is not separate from the game’s history. Officials help create that history.

At the same time, Crawford does not want the Hall of Fame—or the NBA—to become the only measure of a successful officiating career.

“There are only 75 NBA jobs,” Crawford said. “Just because you are not an NBA referee does not make you a bad referee. The game you referee that day means something to someone. Referee it to the best of your ability.”

That may be the most important lesson of his Hall of Fame career. Every game matters to someone. The middle school contest matters to the players experiencing organized basketball for the first time. The high school rivalry matters to the communities filling the gym. The small-college game matters to the athletes and coaches who have invested years preparing for it. An assignment does not have to appear on national television to deserve an official’s preparation, concentration and best effort.

Joey Crawford’s career was loud, imperfect, demanding and unforgettable. It was also defined by preparation, accountability, loyalty and an enduring love for the craft. His Hall of Fame induction recognizes the thousands of games he worked and the historic assignments he earned, but his reflections reveal something even more valuable.

Listen to your mentors. Protect your partners. Learn from your mistakes. Be yourself. Stay the course. Savor the experience.

And wherever the assignment takes you, remember that the game means something to someone.

It’s the middle of the third quarter of a 20-point game. White hits a 3-pointer, and their point guard decides to guard blue’s point guard all the way up the floor. You are in lead transitioning to trail. You slipped up the court too quickly and are even with the ball when—BANG! White 15 jumps in front of blue 3, and there is a huge collision.

What’s your call, ref?

The instant you blow your whistle, you are on stage. Everyone saw the crash, and almost all of them expect an offensive foul. You don’t believe the defender obtained legal guarding position.

You have a block.

What happens next may shape the rest of your night—not necessarily because of the call itself, but because of what everyone believes about you after you make it. Do the players believe you saw the whole play? Does the coach believe you understand why you made the call? Do your partners believe you are certain? When the game gives you a difficult moment, does everyone feel as if the situation is under control?

That is court presence.

One definition of presence is “an invisible spirit that is felt nearby.” While you are not a ghost out there, everyone involved in the game—players, coaches, fans and your partners—can feel your presence. They can feel its absence, too.

After spending a career officiating at the highest levels of basketball, including the NBA Finals, I have come to believe that presence is not primarily about looking the part. It is about creating believability, anticipating what the game needs and providing leadership when certainty is difficult to find.

Presence Creates Believability

When officials talk about court presence, we often begin with posture, voice, signals, movement and appearance. Those things matter because of what they create.

They create believability.

The higher I advanced in my NBA career, the more I understood that getting a play right was only part of the job. The players were faster, the decisions happened more quickly and the pressure surrounding every call became greater. By the time you are officiating an NBA playoff or Finals game, no one needs a referee who simply knows the rules. They need someone whose judgment they can trust in a difficult environment.

That trust does not begin with one great call. It develops through dozens of small moments. How do you walk onto the floor? Do your movements have purpose? What happens to your body language when a coach challenges you? Do you look different after a difficult whistle than you do after an obvious one?

Players and coaches are constantly reading those signals, even if they cannot explain exactly what they are seeing.

During a RefMasters University session, Kane Fitzgerald and I studied a block-charge play. There were mechanical details we could debate, but the first thing that stood out was the calling official’s decisiveness.

You believed him.

A strong presentation cannot make a bad decision correct. Film will eventually expose the truth. But when you have made the right decision, your presence helps everyone else trust it.

Think again about our collision. If you step backward, drop your eyes and deliver the call as if you hope no one noticed, you communicate uncertainty before the coach says a word. If you step toward the moment and make it clear that you saw the defender arrive late, you give everyone a reason to believe you.

The coach may still disagree. That is basketball.

But disagreement and disbelief are not the same thing.

A coach can disagree with your judgment and still believe you understood the play. Once coaches and players stop believing you understand what is happening, the game becomes much more difficult to manage. Credibility is one of an official’s most valuable forms of currency, and court presence helps you earn it.

The Best Presence Is Proactive

We usually notice court presence after something happens. There is a whistle, a signal or a conversation with a coach. But the best officials show presence before the moment arrives.

They anticipate.

That may be the biggest difference I notice when I watch developing officials through RefMasters. Younger referees tend to react to the game. More experienced officials begin to recognize what the game will need next. They see a matchup becoming more physical before the contact escalates. They anticipate a coach’s question, recognize when a late-game situation may create confusion and know when a partner is likely to need information.

During one RefMasters University film session, we watched an out-of-bounds play in which the lead official needed help from the center. The center eventually provided the information, but his body language told the story. He was not ready. The lead had to find him, and only then did the center react. That slight hesitation changed how the entire sequence looked.

Kane brought up Scott Foster as an example of the opposite. When Scott has information that may help a partner, he will often take a few steps toward the play. He is not taking over the call and may not say anything. Those steps simply communicate: I’m here. I saw it. I have information if you need me.

That is court presence.

The difference between reacting and anticipating may be only two steps. But those two steps tell your partners—and everyone watching—that you are engaged.

I learned during my NBA career that much of game management is really problem recognition. What is about to happen? Where is the next point of tension? What information will my crew need? What can I address now so it does not become a larger problem later?

Consider a late-game free throw when everyone knows an intentional miss may be coming. Presence is not about making yourself the center of attention. It is recognizing the situation and making sure the players understand what is expected before the ball is released.

You are not reacting to confusion. You are preventing it.

That is when court presence becomes more than presentation. It becomes awareness. The official with great presence is not simply telling everyone what happened. That official is preparing everyone for what comes next.

Presence Is Knowing What to Do Next

Every referee experiences uncertainty. I experienced it during my NBA career. The game moves too quickly, and the plays are too difficult, for any official to feel completely certain in every moment.

Presence is not pretending otherwise.

Presence is knowing what to do next.

If you need information from a partner, get it. If the crew needs to come together, identify the question, share what everyone saw and make a decision. There is nothing weak about asking for help. What damages credibility is looking as though you do not have a plan.

Body language becomes especially important during those moments. If one official is staring at the floor, another has his hands on his hips and a third is shrugging, the crew has communicated uncertainty to the entire building. Eventually, it may not matter what the final decision is. No one will believe it.

Leadership does not require having every answer immediately. Sometimes leadership means calmly creating a process for finding the answer.

When a coach challenges you, presence is not automatically becoming louder or more forceful. It is listening, understanding the question and responding like someone comfortable with the decision.

And when you make a mistake, presence means admitting it.

Sometimes the most credible thing an official can say is, “Coach, I missed it.”

Court presence cannot compensate for poor decision-making. A booming voice and perfect signals will not make an incorrect ruling correct. Real confidence does not require defending the indefensible. It allows you to acknowledge a mistake without letting that mistake define the next play.

That is something the NBA taught me. Even the most accomplished officials miss plays. The standard is not perfection. The standard is preparation, accountability and the ability to remain ready for whatever the game asks of you next.

The Little Things Tell a Story

One of the things I enjoy most about working with developing referees through RefMasters is watching them begin to see the game differently.

At first, they watch the call. Was it a block or a charge? Was the player in the act of shooting? Who caused the ball to go out of bounds?

Then we watch the film again.

Now we notice where the official’s eyes were before the play. We notice how the official moved after the whistle. We see whether their shoulders dropped when the coach reacted and whether they were ready when a partner needed help. We notice the half-second of hesitation that changed how everyone perceived the decision.

Those details may seem small.

They are not.

Together, they tell a story: I belong here. I understand what is happening. I am engaged with my crew. I am ready for the next moment.

Or they tell the opposite story.

That is why film is such an important development tool. But you cannot only watch your calls. You have to watch yourself. Watch how you enter the floor, your body language after a difficult whistle, what happens when a coach challenges you and how you respond when a partner needs information. Compare the moments when you are certain with those when you are not. You will see the difference.

You also should not always watch yourself by yourself.

It is difficult to evaluate your own presence because you already know what you were thinking. You may not notice how your posture changed or how a moment of hesitation affected an otherwise correct decision. Another official may see it immediately.

That is why studying film with other referees is so valuable. You need experienced people who will challenge your perspective, point out what you missed and help you understand not only what they see, but how they see the game.

That is what we do inside RefMasters University. We may begin with a play, but the conversation often becomes much bigger than the ruling. We talk about credibility, anticipation, communication, leadership and the small details that determine whether an official looks ready for the next level.

The goal of court presence is not to become the star of the show. The best presence often does not demand attention at all. It simply gives the game what it needs: visible when necessary, invisible when possible, available when needed, assertive when required and calm at all times.

That balance allows you to run the game without becoming the game.

Court presence is not one big thing. It is how you enter the floor, respond to pressure, anticipate problems, help your partners and recover when you are wrong. It is the invisible spirit everyone around you can feel.

Work on that spirit. Study it on film. Most importantly, study it alongside officials who will challenge what you see and help you recognize what you cannot recognize alone.

That is why I tell officials they need to be part of RefMasters University. It gives us a place to study the game together, learn from people who have worked at its highest levels and have the conversations that make all of us better.

Because the little things tell everyone whether you are ready to run the game.

Sony Tiwari would probably prefer that this article be about someone else.

That instinct tells you a great deal about the CEO and co-founder of RefMasters. Sony does not seek the spotlight or insist on receiving credit for everything happening within the organization. He is more comfortable directing attention toward the officials, educators and team members who make up the RefMasters family. Like a conductor leading an orchestra, Sony understands that the person guiding the performance does not have to produce every sound—or receive all the applause.

Still, every so often, the person quietly setting the tempo deserves to be recognized.

RefMasters was created around an ambitious vision: to improve officiating and help ensure that games around the world are managed by qualified, confident and competent officials. The mission reaches across sports, but basketball remains an important part of the company’s foundation. RefMasters was built alongside experienced NBA officials, including co-founders Kane Fitzgerald and James Williams, and its educational platform connects officials with the knowledge, mentorship and community they need to improve.

Sony may not be the one standing at center court preparing to toss the ball, but his influence can be felt throughout the organization. He has helped bring together accomplished officials, innovative technology and a growing community of people who share a commitment to the craft. Each brings a different voice to RefMasters. Sony’s role is to make sure those voices work together toward a common purpose.

Sony’s path to RefMasters was not a conventional one. He began his career in higher education as a music professor before moving into economic and community development. He later helped develop talent and organizational culture for high-growth technology companies across several industries. That combination of education, technology, leadership and creativity prepared him to recognize both the challenge facing officiating and the opportunity to address it.

Sony has compared leadership to musical conducting, a connection rooted in his background studying and teaching music. A conductor does not personally produce every sound. Instead, the conductor studies the smallest details, communicates a shared vision and creates the conditions that allow others to contribute their talents. Sony brings that same philosophy to RefMasters, providing direction while trusting the people around him to apply their knowledge, experience and individual perspectives to the mission.

“Sony is a facilitator first and foremost, not someone who makes demands or gravitates to dictation,” RefMasters University member Rob Arnold said. “Everything is a conversation, an invitation for many voices to be heard and considered. While he asks a great deal, he does a tremendous amount of labor for those who want to grow, advance, or join the community he oversees.”

That willingness to listen is especially important in officiating. Officials develop through honest conversations, constructive evaluation and the exchange of different perspectives. A good conductor must be able to hear what each section contributes. A good leader must do the same. Sony’s quiet leadership allows people to feel valued while still keeping the entire organization moving in the same direction.

MLB umpire Brennan Miller has seen how that collaborative approach allows people to become personally invested in RefMasters.

“Sony’s leadership at RefMasters stands out because he creates an environment where people feel heard and valued,” Miller said. “He communicates clearly, trusts his team, and genuinely welcomes different opinions, which makes you feel like you’re not just working for a company, but helping build something together.”

There is also a natural connection between conducting and officiating. Both require preparation, timing, awareness and the ability to remain composed when the environment becomes chaotic. Neither role is performed well by someone determined to become the center of attention. The best conductors serve the music. The best officials serve the game. Sony leads RefMasters with that same sense of quiet confidence.

His work is also aimed at one of the most serious problems confronting sports. The officiating shortage affects communities across the country. Without trained officials, games cannot be played, young athletes lose opportunities and the entire sports ecosystem suffers. RefMasters is responding by bringing together education, technology, community and access to experienced officials who can help others grow.

NFL referee Brandon Cruse sees the larger significance of the foundation Sony is putting in place.

The first time you meet Lauren Holtkamp-Sterling, you get the sense she’s composed of dualities: calm but intense, grounded but unflinching, both caring and competitive. There’s a rare steadiness in her voice, a kind that can only come from someone who’s learned to hold chaos in one hand and compassion in the other.

“I started my career walking hospital halls,” she told me. “As a chaplain, I sat with people in their most uncertain moments. My job was to listen deeply and offer steadiness when life felt chaotic.”

That was before her twenty-year run as a professional basketball referee. Before the NBA, before the nights under bright lights with split-second decisions that millions would debate by morning. “When I moved from the hospital room to the court, the intensity just looked different,” she said. “Pressure, uncertainty, people counting on you. It was all still there. It just wore a different uniform.”

That sentence stayed with me long after our conversation. The pressure didn’t vanish when she traded the chaplain’s collar for the referee’s whistle. It just changed arenas.

The Invisibility Code

For as long as referees have existed, invisibility has been treated as a virtue; a sign that the game went smoothly, that you didn’t get in the way. Lauren remembers a moment on an NBA floor when that idea hit her square in the chest.

“A player turned to me once after I reported a foul,” she recalled, “and said, ‘Nobody came here to see you.’ He wasn’t being mean, just matter-of-fact. And I said, ‘You’re right. They didn’t come to see me. But I’m here so that you can work.’”

There’s a quiet dignity in that exchange, and a deeper truth. Referees are trained to be invisible, but that invisibility has had consequences. It’s made the emotional side of officiating invisible, too.

“Officials carry so much silently,” Lauren said. “You hear about the travel, the scrutiny, the mistakes, but rarely about the emotional toll behind those things. The truth is, the mental and emotional demands are just as intense as the physical ones. And yet we’ve had almost no language or space for them.”

When she says “language,” she doesn’t mean jargon. She means honesty.

In locker rooms and airport gates, she remembers whispers about burnout and fatigue, about relationships strained by constant travel, about fear of losing assignments after one bad call. “But we almost never talked about what those feelings meant,” she said. “We had no shared vocabulary for it.”

That’s the void RefWell is designed to fill.

The Courage to Say ‘Health’

When we started building RefWell together inside RefMasters, we both noticed something strange: the officiating world is full of talk about the “mental side” of performance: focus, reset, composure. But the moment you add the word “health,” the conversation tightens.

“Isn’t that wild?” Lauren laughed. “Just adding one more word — health — completely changes how people react.”

She remembered how early mentors like Ed Rush, former NBA Supervisor of Officials, were already teaching mental focus and reset techniques years ago. “That was huge for me as a younger referee,” she said. “You make a ton of mistakes early on, and that’s how you learn. But what matters is not letting it shut you down — learning to stay curious and joyful through the process.”

That’s performance psychology. But what about mental health?

“We still hesitate to go there,” she said. “But it’s all connected. The mental health conversation isn’t separate from performance. It is performance. It’s resilience, flexibility, and self-awareness. It’s how you manage the chaos inside so you can meet the chaos outside.”

She smiled at that phrase “chaos inside, chaos outside” and I realized it might be the purest description yet of officiating. Every night, officials step into unpredictable storms: volatile crowds, human error, emotional players, and self-doubt. But what most people miss is that the biggest noise isn’t always external. It’s the chatter in your own head.

The Toll of the Whistle

“The scrutiny is enormous,” she said. “Every decision can become a headline, and not just about the call, but about your integrity. Integrity is sacred to referees, and when that’s questioned, it cuts deep.”

Then there’s the travel, a life in motion, punctuated by isolation. “Even as a high school ref, you’re gone most evenings,” she said. “You’re away from family, away from your own support system. It can be energizing for a while, but if you don’t tend to it, that solitude tips into loneliness.”

Lauren’s empathy for that struggle is born from experience, not abstraction. “There were nights I’d walk into my hotel room and feel completely untethered,” she said. “That’s when you realize this isn’t just about calls and mechanics. It’s about connection, balance, grounding.”

It’s also about the body. “The mind-body connection is non-negotiable,” she added. “Limited sleep, disrupted nutrition — all of that affects your mood and focus. Yet we rarely talk about it as part of mental performance.”

Her therapist’s training has helped her see the continuum more clearly. “Physical strain, emotional fatigue, relational tension, it’s all data. Your body’s constantly telling you something about your mind.”

The Culture of Silence

When I asked why officiating culture has been so slow to embrace these conversations, Lauren didn’t hesitate. “Because we’re trained to be invisible,” she said. “We’re guardians of the game, and we think admitting struggle means we’re not fit to guard it.”

Then she paused. “And historically, toughness has been confused with silence. If you’re not talking about it, people assume you’ve figured it out. That you’re stronger than the next person who is talking about it.”

It’s a myth that’s cost officials dearly, not just in burnout but in identity. “So many of us build our sense of self around being the one who’s composed, the one who can handle anything,” she said. “That makes it really hard to ask for support. We become experts at helping others stay calm, but amateurs at helping ourselves.”

What she hopes RefWell will do is redefine what toughness looks like. “True toughness,” she said, “isn’t silence. It’s honesty. It’s courage. It’s showing up to do the inner work.”

A Program by Referees, for Referees

RefWell officially launched in October 2025, with Lauren leading the inaugural session: The Three Pillars of Mental Health in Officiating. The idea was simple but radical: make the mental side of officiating trainable.

“RefWell is a training ground for the mind,” Lauren said. “We’re helping officials build resilience, clarity, and connection. Every session gives you a tool you can use, not just theory. Think of it like a mental gym workout.”

The program’s framework reflects her whole-person philosophy: Awareness, Tools & Training, and Community & Connection.

“We already train our bodies and our rules knowledge,” she said. “Why wouldn’t we also train our minds?”

Every session, she promises, will leave members with something tangible: a breathing technique, a reframing exercise, or even just a moment of shared understanding. “You’ll walk away with one thing you can use the next time you blow your whistle,” she said. “Something that brings you back to center.”

And the third pillar of community might be the most important of all. “Officials need to know they’re not alone,” she said. “RefWell is about creating space for us to connect, share wisdom, and learn from each other’s experiences.”

The Broader Movement

When Lauren talks about mental health, she tends to avoid therapy talk.

“This isn’t about jargon,” she said. “It’s a referee-to-referee conversation about what we all feel but don’t always name.”

Her goal is to bring the conversation into the open, and make the invisible visible. “Players and coaches are starting to get the support they need,” she said. “We deserve the same. The game needs us, and we can’t be left behind.”

RefWell is her way of ensuring that doesn’t happen.

The kickoff is a storm. Twenty-two athletes surging, bodies colliding, and officials scattered across the field bringing order to chaos. To someone that hasn’t officiating a down, it sounds unmanageable.

In a recent RefMasters Football session, NFL referee Brandon Cruse peeled back the curtain on this skill:

“Read the kicker’s approach angle to figure out where the ball is going to go. Is it always perfect? No. But it’s over 90% accurate.”

Think about that for a moment. Before the ball is in the air, before the blocks are forming, before the returner even moves, you can predict where the play is headed.

Like an Outfielder in Baseball

Brandon pointed to prominent college football referee Tuta Salaam as an example:

On the kickoff, Tuta didn’t wait for the ball to dictate his movement. He read the kicker’s steep angle, anticipated the kick’s trajectory, and flowed with purpose to his right. By the time the returner caught the ball, Salam was already in perfect position to officiate the point of attack.

Brandon compared it to baseball:

“He moved with a purpose… like an outfielder getting a jump on the ball.”

It’s not about chasing the play. It’s about getting a head start on it, so when the storm hits, you’re already standing in the calm at its center.

Stillness in the Chaos

It's easy to think of kickoff mechanics as a reaction: see the ball, chase the play, sort it out. But if you wait to react, you’re sprinting. And if you’re sprinting, you’re not officiating as well.

Brandon’s advice was clear:

“When they start to engage each other, we want to be as still as possible because we’ve got a lot of work to do. The whole field’s the point of attack.”

The key is moving early, not late. Thinking ahead enables stillness when it matters most.

The Craft Nobody Talks About

This isn’t in the manuals. You won’t find a chart in your association’s handbook telling you to study a kicker’s hips. But it’s what separates the officials who survive the game from those who Run The Game.

• Anticipate by reading the approach angle.

• Move with purpose early.

• Be still when the collisions arrive.

As Brandon summed it up:

“Tuta was perfect in position because he was thinking ahead. That’s the craft.”

Every time my phone buzzed with a new notification, I couldn’t help but smile. Another official, another workout, another piece of proof that this community is about more than fouls and violations.

Much like the upcoming Runnin Ref Fitness Challenge starting November 3, this summer, referees from all walks of life stepped outside for two weeks of outdoor exercise. Some ran at dawn, others lifted after work, a few turned everyday chores into training. What united them was simple: a dedication to officiating, a desire to stay healthy, and a love of fresh air.

The best part? Watching how different that looked for each person.

Fitness in Many Forms

Julie Choat showed us the power of connection, sharing her workouts outside with friends. On this day, fitness was also about community.

Chevon White went hard, training with a determination you could feel through the screen. Pure intensity and focus.

For example, did you know that your brain has mirror neurons that automatically pick up on others’ emotions and body language? When a player’s frustration spikes, your own physiology can unconsciously mirror that tension, subtly tightening your shoulders or shortening your breath. Awareness of this dynamic helps referees stay grounded and avoid “catching” the emotions around them, so they can respond instead of react.

This first pillar is about demystifying mental health and giving referees new knowledge they can use right away. Whether it’s understanding how adrenaline affects focus, or learning why certain feedback hits harder than others, awareness is the first step toward resilience.

2. Skills and Resilience Building: Tools for the Work and Beyond

Knowledge is powerful, but without skills, it stays theoretical. RefWell equips referees with practical skills: from breathing techniques and spatial awareness to cognitive reframing and psychology. When Chris Penso talks about refereeing, you notice two things right away: his humility and his passion. In one breath, he’ll laugh about his locker room playlist being hijacked by his daughters’ Frozen soundtrack — “At any given point, ‘Let It Go’ might be blasting before kickoff,” he says — and in the next, he’ll describe the raw electricity of standing in the middle of a stadium as 60,000 fans roar. “I love the sound of that, whether it’s for me or against me. I live for that adrenaline on a Saturday night.”

It’s a duality that defines Penso: part dad, part teacher, part referee, part assignor and now, the newest architect in RefMasters’ growing multi-sport enterprise. On September 15, Chris launches RefMasters Soccer with open global discussion and daily education for referees at every level. The program’s first live film session comes soon after, on September 24. For soccer officiating education, this is a watershed moment.

The Long Road from 1997

Penso’s journey into officiating started, as he tells it, with a shrug. “Back in 1997, my U14 coach asked if anyone wanted to take the referee course. A few of us raised our hands, mostly thinking it was a good way to make some money on weekends.” Two of his teammates dropped out quickly, one after a year, the other after three. “I’m the last one standing,” he says with a grin.

That “shrug” became a career. Over seventeen seasons, Penso has worked NCAA Division I Cup Finals, Olympic matches, and more than 250 Major League Soccer league games. He also found himself wearing many other hats: coordinator, assignor, educator, FIFA Video Match Official. Along the way, he’s endured the setbacks that test every official’s resilience: “I’ve had both Achilles operated on. Each one put me out for a year. But here I am, over 17 seasons in the professional ranks seasons in, feeling better now than I did 15 years ago. Whatever it takes, I’ll be on the field.”

The State of Soccer Officiating Education

Despite his decorated résumé, Chris is quick to shift the spotlight away from himself and toward the broader challenges in officiating education. “The biggest gap we have in soccer is law changes and interpretations. FIFA pushes updates down, but by the time it trickles to grassroots referees, a lot gets lost.” With 125,000 registered referees in the U.S., the scale of the problem is enormous.

The result? A young official might show up at a tournament and apply an outdated interpretation of handball, or misread a denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, simply because they never received the updated guidance. “It’s no one’s fault,” Penso explains. “It’s just the nature of the beast. But knowledge is power. The more readily available we can make it, the better everyone gets: referees, coaches, players, even fans.”

That urgency is exactly why RefMasters Soccer matters. Lessons from the Badge and the Whistle

Before he was a full-time referee, Penso was a state trooper. That chapter of his life still colors the way he sees officiating. “In the Patrol Academy, you go through 31 weeks of training designed to break you down and build you back up. They teach you to be confident, resilient, able to perform under pressure. That translates directly to refereeing.”

He offers one example: blocking out the noise. “As VAR, you’ve got open mics from three officials, plus the crowd. It’s chaos. In law enforcement, I learned not to let noise affect my decision-making. Officiating is the same. You have to prioritize, block distractions, and respond with clarity.”

His leadership philosophy flows from the same source. “Always take a breath. Be calm, be measured, avoid knee-jerk reactions. Ninety-nine percent of the time, you’ll regret the knee-jerk later. Whether it’s on the field, in administration, or in life, that’s my biggest lesson.”

Penso’s advice couldn’t come at a better time. In a profession where abuse, burnout, and attrition are constant threats, the ability to slow down and center yourself can mean the difference between quitting after a year or building a career like Penso’s.

Community as the Lifeline

If law enforcement taught him resilience, refereeing taught him community. “One of my biggest pieces of advice to new referees is make friends. It can be lonely, especially at the start when you’re out there by yourself with eight-year-olds and parents who think it’s the World Cup. But the friendships are what keep you in.”

For Chris, that’s more than sweet sentiment. He met his wife (Tori, a world-class and pioneering soccer official in her own right) at a soccer tournament. He’s been welcomed into the homes of referees across New Zealand and countless other countries. “Everywhere I travel, officials treat me like family. That sense of community is powerful.”

It’s also at the heart of why he signed on to lead RefMasters Soccer. “When I peeked under the hood of the RefMasters app, what struck me most was the community. The education is great, but the peer-to-peer conversations, the support, the friendships — that’s what keeps referees in the game. That’s what we’re going to build on in soccer.”

Why RefMasters, Why Now

The statistics are sobering: Nearly 70% of referees in the U.S. don’t return after their first year. And while soccer is unique in its scale, the problem isn’t unique to soccer — basketball, football, and baseball all struggle with retention. RefMasters’ multi-sport platform was designed to tackle exactly this: knowledge gaps, lack of mentorship, and the absence of community.

For Chris, that cross-pollination is what excites him most. “Football can learn from soccer. Soccer can learn from baseball. Basketball can learn from all of them. The principles of officiating are the same regardless of level or location.”

That’s why the first RefMasters Soccer film session on September 24 won’t just be about analyzing an MLS clip. It might be a Division III match, or even a youth game. “Positioning is positioning,” Penso reminds me. “Communication is communication. There’s something for everyone.”

In the end, Chris’ message is simple: make friends, ignore the noise, and keep learning. That’s what sustained him from a $20-a-game teenager in 1997 to a global referee on the biggest stages. It’s what will sustain the next generation if we can give them the tools, confidence, and community they need.

Or as Chris likes to say: “Whatever it takes, I’ll be on the field.”

Chris Penso: A Global Leader in Soccer Officiating

Chris Penso brings over two decades of elite-level experience to RefMasters. Since joining Major League Soccer in 2009, he has officiated more than 250 regular season games—including MLS All-Star Games (2016) and MLS Cup Finals in 2015, 2018, and 2021. He remains an active MLS referee and FIFA Video Match Official, representing the United States at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and officiating both men’s and women’s gold medal matches.

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Penso holds critical leadership roles within the officiating community. Since 2020, he has served as the Coordinator of Officials for Men’s and Women’s Soccer in the American Conference—overseeing recruitment, assignment, and development of collegiate referees. This past weekend, the umpire world lit up with excitement as Jen Pawol made history, breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of officials.

But what made it even more special for us here at RefMasters was knowing that our own Natola Hawthorne and Greta Langhenry were there in person to witness it all unfold.

And while we celebrate Jen’s groundbreaking moment, we also want to take a moment to highlight Natola, who has carved her own path in umpiring history. In a recent interview, she shared a piece of wisdom that’s stuck with me ever since:

“Shoot for the stars, you may fall in the clouds, but you’re still up.”

We’re beyond proud to have such incredible role models and trailblazers in our community. These moments are changing the face — and the perception — of umpiring for the better, paving the way for those who will follow.

The game is evolving. The opportunities are growing. And the future has never looked brighter.

There’s a unique kind of tension that builds right before a new season starts.

Your schedule fills up. Communication from your crews trickles—or floods—in. Maybe you’ve been promoted. Maybe you’re not on the list you were hoping for. The game itself feels familiar. But the role you’ve been asked to play this year? That’s new terrain.

And the real challenge becomes:

How do I fulfill that role in a way that stays true to my own strengths, experiences, and values?

I’ve wrestled with that question in more seasons of life than I can count.

• Walking into Madison Square Garden as an NBA referee for the first time.

• Returning to form postpartum while finding my footing as a new mom.

• Facing injury and stepping away from the court.

• Sitting across from a therapy client’s uncertainty while holding my own as a therapist-in-training.

Each time, the temptation was to squeeze myself into an image of what I thought the role demanded. But the real growth came when I brought my own way of doing it—when I let my unique experiences shape how I served.

This tension isn’t weakness. It’s transition. And transitions—when left unacknowledged—can undermine both your sense of self and your ability to perform at your best.

Let’s talk about it.

The Myth of the “Ideal” Role-Filler

In officiating, we spend years refining our craft, building a reputation, and developing a professional presence. It’s easy to believe there’s one “right” way to step into each position—as if there’s a single mold for what makes someone ready, worthy, or successful.

But if you try to disappear into that mold, you risk losing the flexibility to adapt when circumstances shift. You stop drawing on your own strengths and start chasing someone else’s playbook.

That’s when the mental strain shows up:

• We get promoted and feel like imposters because we think we’re not “doing it right.”

• We’re left off a crew and start questioning our worth.

• We struggle to juggle family, work, and recovery, and think we’re “not dedicated enough.”

• We chase the image of who we think we’re supposed to be instead of using the strengths we already have.

Psychologists call this role engulfment—when one role becomes the primary lens for how we see ourselves. For many officials, that role is “referee.” The risk isn’t in caring deeply about the craft—it’s in forgetting that you are more than the uniform, and that your whole self is an asset to the job.

Interpersonal Neurobiology: Why This Hits So Deep

Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB) teaches us something profound: our sense of self is not static—it’s constantly being shaped by our experiences and relationships.

In other words, your nervous system doesn’t just respond to the world—it’s built by it.

When the system around you rewards performance over presence, image over integration, it’s easy for your brain to start pruning away the parts of yourself that don’t “fit.” This is how we lose touch with joy, spontaneity, and emotional range. This is how connection becomes compliance.

Under pressure, your nervous system kicks into survival mode—fight, flight, freeze, fawn. These responses aren’t flaws, they’re strategies. But if you don’t build in practices that allow your system to return to safety and wholeness, survival becomes your default mode.

And no one thrives from survival alone.

This is why the emotional and relational work matters. It’s not soft. It’s not extra. It’s the infrastructure of sustainable performance.

Stress Without Self = Burnout

From the mental health perspective, high performers often face what I call misaligned activation. The sympathetic nervous system—the fight/flight response—kicks in when the stakes rise. But if you’re not internally aligned—if you haven’t grounded yourself in your values and your unique approach—your body starts carrying stress it can’t process.

That’s when you see:

• Anxiety and brain fog.

• Snapping at your crew.

• Hyper-fixation on mistakes.

• Disconnection from the joy of the work.

If you enter the season amped up on adrenaline but unclear on how you want to inhabit your role, you’re not just unprepared—you’re vulnerable.

The antidote isn’t “think positive.” It’s intentional grounding:

• What values are guiding me this year?

• What do I refuse to lose touch with, even in the chase for success?

• What role am I stepping into—and what version of me is stepping into it?

Most people ask, “What do I want to accomplish this season?”
I’d rather ask, “How do I want to show up while I do it?”

The Power of Pre-Season Self-Review

Before a season starts, most officials focus on mechanics, fitness, and film review. All necessary. All valuable.
But what if you carved out the same time to prepare yourself?

Three practices I recommend—and try to use myself:

1. Self-Inventory, Not Self-Judgment
   List the roles you’re carrying right now: crew chief, parent, partner, mentor, learner. Ask: Which ones feel alive and aligned? Which feel heavy? Which have drifted from my values?

2. Emotional Calibration
   Notice how you feel heading into this season—hopeful, nervous, resentful, excited, overwhelmed. Your emotions are data. You don’t have to obey them, but ignoring them won’t help you lead yourself well.

3. Internal Anchoring
   Choose 1–2 principles that matter most to you this year—unrelated to status or outcomes. (e.g., “Bring presence.” “Model steadiness.” “Practice boundaries.”) Let these be your compass when circumstances shift.

There’s a moment in a recent RefMasters University Football session where Brandon Cruse, in his usual grounded brilliance, says something that stuck with me:

“Eventually we got to put the game to bed.”

That phrase stopped me in my tracks.

We all know exactly what he's talking about. That invisible weight. The one situation you keep replaying in your mind while folding laundry, driving to work, or brushing your teeth. Or, on the flip side, the time where everything clicked and you start to believe you're untouchable. Neither one is helpful if you carry it too long.

You can’t get better if you can’t move on. That’s what “putting the game to bed” is about.

Right after I heard Brandon say it, I made the illustration above: a referee literally tucking a football into bed. Now I keep that image ingrained in my head. I laugh at it. Then I breathe a little easier and remind myself to let go.

Detach with Care

There’s a delicate art to this. We still need to learn from our past. Evaluate the decision process. Replay the angles. Understand how our psychology contributed to the moment. But we don’t need to live there. What Brandon emphasized (and what I’ve seen modeled by the best sports officials in the world) is the ability to review without rumination. As he put it:

“Can we detach our identity from the result that happened... and have a very positive growth mindset around a productive evaluation?”

That’s the superpower. Not pretending mistakes didn’t happen, but not letting them take permanent residence in our brains either.

When to Review, When to Rest

Brandon doesn’t prescribe a rigid schedule for evaluation. Some of us can watch film an hour after the final whistle. For others, that’s emotional quicksand. As he says, “Be intentional, but not rigid.”

Putting the game to bed means knowing when to analyze, and when to sleep. It’s a self-check:

• Am I learning right now?

• Or am I just reliving it?

If it’s the latter, you might need to call it a night.

Mistakes and Milestones

We often obsess more over the mistake than we do over the success. But both are dangerous if held too tightly. You make an incredible call? Great, let's do it again next week. You butcher a holding foul? Fine, fix it and move on. Neither defines you.

As Brandon puts it:

“Be intentional... but know when to move on.”

What i've learned working at Refmasters is that officials at the highest level aren’t just masters of mechanics or rules, they're masters of mental habit. That’s something I’ve had to learn by working with people like Brandon. And it's something I'm still working on.

So: Put the Game to Bed

When the adrenaline wears off, everything has been analyzed and the evals are submitted, put it to bed. You’ll wake up sharper for the next one.

You’ve all been there.

Your partner makes a tough call, and next thing you know, you’re the one getting an earful. The ball’s dead, the crowd is loud, and a coach is marching toward you—not because of something you did, but because they didn’t like what your partner just called. Now you’re in the crosshairs.

So how do you handle it?

In advance of tonight’s FREE Pro Officials and Pizza event, I posed this exact question recently in the RefMasters App:

"When a coach is livid with your partner's call and approaches you about it during a dead ball, what are your go-to methods or phrases to deescalate?"

What followed was one of my favorite threads in a while—full of wisdom, humor, and the kind of grounded experience that only comes from being in the arena (literally).

Here are a few standout responses from our community:

Mark LaFountain keeps it simple:

“Listen. Sometimes they may just want to vent. Then tell them we are not going to discuss my partner. If they have a question they want to ask him/her, they’ll be over here in a minute.”

Mike Duvall goes for a mix of empathy and sharp wit:

“Most of the time they are just venting. But my go-to is, ‘I understand Mike, but this isn’t the mall and we don’t shop calls here!’”

John McLeod uses a touch of self-deprecation to break the tension:

“I call him by his first name and say, ‘Tim, you know me, I don’t do Varsity.’ That slows them down, gets a laugh—and then we address it.”

José E. Flores Díaz emphasizes angle and accountability:

“Coach, he/she got a better angle on that play than us—probably wait until you can ask them directly.”

And Lawrence Walker laid out a thoughtful two-part framework:

1. Identify if the coach is asking a question or just ranting.

2. Don’t linger in a discussion that undermines your crew.

“It should be short and sweet. If the coach doesn’t want to do that, that’s why I have that checklist of identifying their actions.”

Others chimed in with principles that feel timeless:

• Bryan White: “They just want to be heard.”

• Victor Myers: “Ask the coach what he/she saw. Then explain what you saw—or why you can’t speak on it.”

• Chevon Keith: “I can’t answer for my partner, but I’ll let you know what I saw from my angle.”

Then there’s Joseph Carter, who goes straight to the heart of it:

“Are you saying he’s cheating or questioning his integrity?”

That’s bold, but when said with calm clarity, it can be effective in reminding a coach there are boundaries—even in the heat of competition.

The recent announcement by FIFA to equip referees with body cameras at the 2025 Club World Cup marks a significant milestone in sports technology. As someone who works with and for sports officials everyday, I'm intrigued.

Perhaps more cameras are inevitable. Baseball umpires have started using them, and referee-mounted cameras are slowly making their way into basketball, football and hockey as well. But what are the implications?

At RefMasters, we are dedicated to the effective and ethical use of tech to help sports officials be their best. That means with every new development, we carefully weigh whether the upside is worth the potential risk.

The Opportunity

It's not pure theory. Transparency through video technology has already proven beneficial. Research by Sanderson and Kassing (2011) emphasizes that increased visibility into officiating processes can mitigate fan frustration by clarifying decisions, thus reducing conflict and misinformation. Body cameras can similarly serve as an invaluable educational resource, aiding officials in improving positioning, decision-making, and communication.

There's also a clear opportunity to better humanize our officials through video footage. Plenty of psychological research demonstrates how empathy increases when people gain direct insight into others’ experiences. By showing referees navigating high-pressure, real-time decisions, we can cultivate empathy and reduce hostility toward officials.

The Risk

Yet, we must approach this technology with caution and critical thinking. As Harvard’s Clayton Christensen famously articulated in his theory of disruptive innovation, new technologies bring unforeseen consequences alongside their promised benefits. Referee cameras too, can introduce significant unintended outcomes:

• Overexposure and Misinterpretation: Social psychology research warns that media exposure amplifies emotional reactions, potentially escalating minor officiating errors into major controversies (Fiske & Taylor, 2013). Cameras could inadvertently magnify trivial moments, creating disproportionate scrutiny.

• Editing and Context Issues: Selective editing from 3rd parties poses a substantial risk of misrepresentation. Research on media effects repeatedly highlights that edited narratives shape public perception significantly (McCombs & Shaw, 1972), potentially undermining transparency efforts rather than enhancing them.

• Superficial Solutions: Cameras alone cannot fix deeper systemic issues in officiating such as inconsistent training, inadequate support structures, or unclear protocols. As noted by Davis (1989) in technology integration studies, without addressing underlying organizational and structural issues, technological interventions rarely achieve their desired outcomes.

• Privacy and Psychological Pressure: Continuous monitoring might impact behavior negatively, an effect well-documented in psychological research. The "observer effect" suggests individuals alter behavior when aware they're being watched, potentially diminishing authenticity and increasing stress (Zajonc, 1965).

As we consider introducing body cameras to youth, high school, and collegiate levels, the effects may be even greater. The mental well-being of officials is a growing concern, as excessive pressure or scrutiny can deter promising talent.

Keys to Success

Remember when police body cameras were initially met with skepticism? These days they are widely accepted for enhancing accountability. Conversely, innovations such as Google Glass illustrate the pitfalls of technology adoption without clear success metrics or societal acceptance.

At RefMasters, we believe the future of new technology in officiating comes down to 3 questions:

1. How will we measure success? What would we expect to see or prevent that indicates things are going well? Which tradeoffs are acceptable?

2. What are the boundaries? What limits should exist? Should it be used all game, every game? Or should it be triggered in the way replay is?

3. What supports are needed? How do we train officials, enable assignors and educate players/coaches/fans on the use of this technology?

I'm optimistic, but cautious. The promise of referee cameras is clear, but we must avoid the trap of passing our problems onto this emerging technology and washing our hands of the underlying issues. Technology should work for us, not the other way around.

Wherever we land with this, intentionality is critical. Our officials, athletes, coaches, and spectators deserve it.
