This week’s headline story is undoubtedly private equity firm BlackSun’s Mega Fund 1 raise. It’s first fund, with an initial target of a $7 billion raise, is set to be deployed across sports, entertainment, media and technology. If that full deployment materialises, it would be the single largest debut sports-focused private equity raise of 2026, and by some margin too. Second only to CVC’s Global Sport Group raise of $14 billion in September of last year. This is the latest in a consistent theme of sports-focused fund formations throughout 2026; 154 Partners, Otro Capital, L Catterton's Champ, Harbinger Sports Partners, Gareth Bale's Juggernaut fund, the list goes on — demonstrating the institutional conviction in sports as an asset class. BlackSun isn’t another specialist vehicle targeting a niche within the sector. It is targeting the full stack: franchise ownership, media, entertainment and technology businesses simultaneously, at a scale that would give them meaningful leverage in all of them.

Relatively modest to the figures mentioned above, an international consortium has acquired a majority stake in a first division Portuguese club. What’s of particular note here isn’t the figure for a European football club, but who makes up the consortium. Led by venture investment firms ADvantage and LEAD, whose primary focus is sports technology, means this isn’t a traditional football club acquisition by a generalist PE firm, but a technology-first investment in a football club as a platform for innovation deployment. Further exemplified by KI Group’s involvement which adds an early-stage tech dimension to the deal. A German investment firm that specialises in backing emerging technology startups joining a football club acquisition signals an intent to use Estrela de Amadora as both a sporting and technology development play. Add the four football players as the athlete capital angle, and you’ve got experienced footballers with club-level knowledge providing operational credibility alongside the tech and venture expertise the investment firm brings. Expect to see a lot more technology-first investor groups targeting lower-profile European clubs as testing grounds for innovative technology at manageable acquisition costs.

EverPass serves bars, restaurants, and other commercial spaces that carry live sports programming, giving DAZN a B2B revenue channel in the US market that its consumer subscription model cannot address. The launch of DAZN for Business recognises that the commercial venue market requires a dedicated product rather than regurgitated consumer offering.

Carbon reporting partnerships are underreported relative to their long-term impact. Bradford City naming a carbon-reporting firm as its official partner reflects the growing awareness that sustainability commitments require measurement infrastructure be put in place before it can meaningful. Amazon as a global title partner for HYROX London ExCel is the most commercially significant partnership to date, considering Amazon’s retail, media and advertising infrastructure gives a rapidly growing fitness competition format distribution and commercial activation reach that previous partnerships haven’t reached.

Why This Matters: The three fan features are not generic AI features slapped onto an existing app, instead they reflect specific insights about how tennis fans consume match information and what analytical stats they want in real time. IBM has been the US Open’s technology partner for decades, and each year’s new features reflect applied learning from previous tournament data about fan behaviour and engagement patterns. The new features released for this year’s tournament are applied learnings from a study conducted by IBM in collaboration with Morning Consult, a report I intend to cover in the coming weeks.

FINAL THOUGHTS

BlackSun’s $1 billion Mega Fund 1, a debut vehicle targeting franchise ownership alongside media, entertainment, and technology businesses, and the Estrela da Amadora consortium’s technology-first club acquisition both reflect the same underlying conviction from different angles. That is that sports assets and the technology infrastructure around them are increasingly being evaluated as a unified investment category rather than separate markets.

DAZN’s EverPass acquisition adds a third data point: a streaming platform acquiring commercial venue infrastructure to unlock a B2B revenue channel that consumer subscriptions cannot access.

And running beneath all three is the week’s partnership activity where fan engagement and commercial relationships continue to attract investment and attention at every level of sport, from Major League Baseball to League One football. The pace hasn’t slowed, if anything, the capital and the ambition are both getting larger.

The speed of the two acquisitions suggests VALD has a clear product architecture in mind and is acquiring to fill specific gaps rather than collecting assets. An intentional consolidation strategy rather than opportunistic one-off deals.

Nomadar and New Hera Interconnection creating a joint sports development alliance between the US, Europe, and Africa arrives at a moment when Africa’s sports market has shifted from overlooked and under-tracked to actively, and more accurately valued and tracked. Africa’s sports market is attracting two distinct types of attention simultaneously. The first being capital and data visibility, and structured cross-continental programme infrastructure being the second. This latest partnership sits in the second category. It’s not a fund or a data product, but a framework for building sports relationships and development pipelines across three distinct sports markets. That’s a different and arguably more durable form of market development than investment alone.

A second cohort signals the programme has moved past inaugural proof-of-concept into a repeatable pipeline, which is the marker that distinguishes genuine innovation infrastructure from one-off PR exercises.

Basketball Courts & Analytics

• Crosscourt, the tech-enabled basketball fitness club announced the closing of a $2 million seed funding round to support the expansion of its stores and platform

• Swish Basket, a basketball data tracking startup, raised a $3.2 million pre-seed round led by Aristagora VC, seeking additional seed funding to scale its product development

Why This Matters: It is the lowest funding round out of the list but the keyword here is interoperable. Reason being, golf club technology systems are fragmented; booking systems, handicap tracking, member management, and POS systems from different vendors that don’t talk to each other. With Peripheral, the Deloitte angle is the detail worth focusing on. One of the big four professional services firm co-leading a seed round in a 3D technology startup signals that such advisory firms from consulting sports tech firms to directly investing in their funding rounds, which is a different level of conviction altogether. As for the product itself, spatial intelligence for live sports media, happens to sit at the intersection of broadcast production and immersive fan experiences, two of the most funded themes this year.

Final Thoughts

Two acquisitions in two weeks, GymAware for velocity-based training data, then BridgeAthletic for strength programme design and prescription, are too deliberate and fast to be opportunistic. VALD is filling specific gaps in a product architecture it clearly has mapped out: assessment, programme design, load monitoring, and VBT measurement converging into a single performance technology ecosystem.

We’ve seen this exact playbook repeatedly throughout 2025 and now 2026: the most consequential sports tech moves have increasingly been consolidation plays rather than new entrants. In other words, established players acquiring smaller specialists to deepen their data ecosystem and raise switching costs. VALD has epitomised this example this month, but Germin and TrainingPeaks, Betterguards and Nextoles, SportAI and Padelytics, Hudl and TeamUp are all examples of a year-long consolidation pattern that is reshaping which companies will own the performance technology stack.

Apologies for the day late publication, this past weekend required me to be away from the laptop which meant I didn’t have time to put this newsletter together. Having said that, the number of announcements published today felt like favourable timing. Last week Google announced the first of its European football sponsorship push with the PSG deal. The technology firm has since rapidly followed that up with four new announcements, two of them being extensions. Google has now built the most sophisticated AI partnership presence in European football of any technology company in the world. The simultaneous Barcelona and Bayern announcements suggests that Google’s current strategy is accelerating into its most ambitious phase yet.

The UK’s athlete-led venture The Players Fund partnership with PureSent, the joint venture between Saudi Arabia’s Pure Sports and SENT Entertainment, is focused on the venture and innovation infrastructure for teams, clubs and federations across the region. The announcement lands at a moment when Saudi’s sports ecosystem development has been one of the newsletter’s consistent theme over the last several weeks — radia, HUMAIN-Al Nassr partnership, and now a venture and innovation vehicle expanding into the region. The Gulf isn’t just attracting capital and events, but building the necessary institutional infrastructure that makes a sports economy self-sustaining rather than dependent on external expertise or resources.

The technology giant is executing a coordinated European club strategy, with the extensions of particular focus given that Gemini as an AI assistant goes deeper than a logo or hardware placement. It embeds a consumer AI product into four of the sport’s most globally distributed fan communities. A brief mention on the LTA’s deployment of electric line calling is a signficant development as it extends the officiating technology from professional tournaments into junior competitions, with the same downward diffusion recently seen with Hawk-Eye last week.

Connected Ball Technology

• LaLiga have become the first domestic league to deploy the Connected Ball technology developed in collaboration with Puma and Kinexon, from the opening match of the new season

What’s compelling is that it isn’t for selected fixtures, instead its being deployed across every match from the opening weekend. The data generated from said ball creates a new data layer that enriches broadcast, performance analysis and fan experience simultaneously. Worth noting that the Puma Kinexon collaboration also reflects that sports equipment manufacturers are becoming technology infrastructure providers.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The week’s most technically distinct development, and the one most likely to have lasting implications is LaLiga’s Connected Ball deployment. The “first mover advantage” of having a connected ball generating real-time data across every domestic fixtures creates a richer data infrastructure layer that didn’t exist in club football before, and the Spanish league being the first to do it at a full league scale sets a precedent that other leagues will surely sit up and take notice of. It echoes what this newsletter has been tracking over the last couple months — sports technology moving from isolated innovations at elite venues/events into systematic infrastructure across entire competitions, garnering the sort of credibility that warrants further attention.

While week 31 was dominated, in terms of deals volume, by Fanword, the go-to storytelling platform for collegiate sports/athletics, Genius Sports certainly made the most impact with its announcements. Before we get to the latter, French and European football champions, Paris Saint-Germain named Google’s Gemini as its official AI assistant and Google Pixel as its official smartphone.

This systematic sports portfolio-building momentum continues after the Fifa World Cup: six national football teams on the biggest stage, LaLiga’s anti-piracy expansion, the NBA renewal and now Europe’s most commercially ambitious club. Google has built one of the most comprehensive AI sports sponsorship portfolios of any technology company in the world, and PSG is the capstone of its club-level strategy. The technology giant is at the forefront of the enterprise technology-as-sports-sponsor theme which we’ve seen with the likes of Harvey, ClickHouse, and Temporal.

Genius Sports partnerships with the two biggest prediction market platforms was admittedly a hard one to include in this week’s roundup. I’ve generally tried to steer clear of covering sports betting or wagering trends which is why I initially ignored these announcements. But after mulling it over, and reading the announcements again, I realised that these were B2B sports data infrastructure, media rights distribution and integrity surveillance deals. It literally says it in the partnership title! Which brings me to my point — these announcements mark a structural shift in how sports data and streaming rights are monetised, and Genius Sports is rewriting the playbook in real-time.

Google Pixel as the official smartphone adds an unfamiliar hardware dimension to a software AI deal, creating a bundled consumer technology partnership model that other clubs will note. (Case in point, Liverpool have Google Pixel as their official smartphone partner but not Gemini.) Four collegiate deals in a single week is a distribution velocity signal worth noting, underpinning the monopoly that Fanword has on the content collegiate sport space. This is a playbook on platform diffusion across collegiate athletics, where AI-powered communications tools are becoming table stakes rather than differentiators.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Google Gemini’s latest partnership on the European football circuit doesn’t get bigger than the continent’s reigning champions. With the conclusion of the World Cup, the technology giant continued its systematic strategy by partnering up with its most prominent club-level placement yet. The addition of Pixel as the hardware element creates a product integration model that goes deeper than logo placement. From national federations a few weeks ago to Europe’s elite shows that technology companies are not buying sports partnerships for visibility alone. They are building integrated product relationships inside the world’s most valuable sports brands.

A closing remark on Genius Sports activity: sports data providers are finding new B2B revenue streams for official league data, and this leads into their overarching play to leverage official data as the core operating engine for real-time sports adtech, triggering programmatic ads at peak emotional moments.

Week 30 was headlined by the city of New York and its citywide initiative aimed at fostering careers in sports and technology for young workers. The city has been on a real momentum run these past 2 months and this latest announcement feels like a culmination of that. For example, the challenge has been described as a World Cup legacy initiative. Makes sense when you consider that the tournament’s finals were held in the city, and that a month earlier, Mayor Mamdani positioned sport as a public good rather than a luxury. A reference to when he announced that World Cup-related programming was to be streamed in kiosks across the five boroughs. Pair that with his Public Interest Technology crews, or “PIT crews” announcement: teams made up of software engineers, product managers, designers, researchers and data experts aimed at city services. An adjacent move that signals a tech-forward administration just before the sports-tech challenge rolls out. Additionally, not forgetting the various summits that were held throughout the month of July around sports business, media and sports tech. The innovation challenge is less an isolated youth programme and more a legacy vehicle that converts tournament buzz and industry energy into a structured sports-tech talent pipeline for young New Yorkers.

Across to the Saudi region, PIF-backed AI enterprise HUMAIN announced its first sports partnership with PIF-owned Al Nassr FC. The agreement covers jersey sponsorship, naming rights for the club’s new training center, and the integration of AI and other technology across the club’s infrastructure. The expansive agreement cements the country’s new strategic direction. This isn't external capital flowing into Saudi sport, it's internal ecosystem building, two PIF entities working together to develop AI infrastructure and digital experience capability domestically. Contrast it briefly with the mega acquisition narrative that has defined Saudi sports coverage, the story here isn't a splashy foreign buy, it's Saudi Arabia beginning to invest in its own sports economy from the inside out. • NYC’s Mayor, the DYCD, New York City FC and City in the Community launched the New Sports and Technology Challenge, a citywide initiative designed to introduce young people to opportunities at the intersection of sports, technology and innovation

Why This Matters: This six-week initiative will give young people exposure to industry leaders from government, education, technology and sports. Aimed at fostering innovation around smart climate-conscious stadiums, inclusive social platforms, accessible public spaces, and upskilling future innovators for the future of the city in sport, technology, and beyond. The city used the World Cup spotlight to position itself as the focal point of the sports tech conversation, not just the tournament’s finals host. The challenge is the punctuation mark on that run, not an isolated press release.

FINAL THOUGHTS

NWSL-Victory+ this week, Mobii-LIV Golf last week was the week’s most important warning signal for the industry. Not because payment disputes are new, but because two in consecutive weeks involving well-capitalised counterparties suggests the commercial frameworks governing technology and media vendor relationships in sport are not keeping pace with the volume and complexity of deals being signed. As sports tech partnerships multiply, the contract infrastructure protecting vendors needs to mature at the same rate as the technology itself.

Conversely, NYC using sport as an on-ramp for technology education, and the World Cup's role in creating a window for that narrative to land is strategic and proven. The partnerships with the DYCD and NYCFC gives it institutional credibility, unmatched expertise, and community reach. It’s like the mayor said, “The World Cup is inspiring our young people, not just to perfect their stepover but to imagine the next great sports stadium, design soccer fields that combat climate change, build new platforms to connect their friends to matches, and much more.”

LIV Golf can’t seem to pluck the holes in their bucket fast enough! Even worse still, they can’t seem to stop more holes from appearing! Mobii Systems Group, the Canadian sports broadcast technology company, sued the beleaguered golf series for outstanding unpaid invoices, usage fees, and lost revenue. Legal disputes between technology vendors and rights holders are rare enough to warrant attention, and it's a stark reminder for vendors that it is in their best interest to assess the financial backing of the right holder to avoid such scenarios when the proverbial sh#t hits the fan. The case is also a reminder that sports tech companies operating as vendors rather than partners carry substantial commercial risk when clients are slow to settle, and that contract structures protecting technology providers deserve as much scrutiny as the technology itself. I read a great piece that went into detail on this from Sports Tech Atlanta. I’d highly recommend giving it a read.

Controversial story of the week aside, there was also the structurally significant matter of a new initiative: the launch of radia, a joint venture between SURJ Sports Investment, Live Nation, and Oak View Group, announced to support the growth of Saudi Arabia’s sports and events infrastructure. The combination of a Saudi sovereign-backed investment vehicle, the world’s largest live events promoter, and the leading arena and stadium development company creates an entity with the capital and expertise to reshape the region’s live sports and entertainment landscape at scale. Garmin’s acquisition of TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic added a major wearable hardware company to the performance coaching software market, and Catapult launched IMPECT Video Scouting, which extended its performance data capabilities into player identification and recruitment.

Something we’ve seen reflected in other sports. Without a doubt, the most distinctive story was Mobii Systems’ lawsuit against LIV Golf. A legal dispute that exposes the commercial risk sitting beneath sports tech vendor relationships, and raises questions about the payment discipline underpinning one of golf’s previously best-funded tours.

Keeping in with the same entity, Radia’s launch by SURJ, Live Nation, and Oak View Group was the week’s most consequential development, creating an operational platform with genuine capability to build and manage Saudi Arabia’s sports and entertainment infrastructure at scale. Week 28 was headlined by Bluestone Equity Partners leading a $55 million growth investment into Poolhouse, the technology-enabled cue sports company founded by the creators of Topgolf and Puttshack. The capital is earmarked primarily for the expansion of BillyQ, Poolhouse’s proprietary vision-processing platform that tracks ball movement and player performance in real-time. The pedigree of the founding team matters here as Topgolf and Puttshack both demonstrated that technology-enhanced recreational sports venues can generate significant commercial scale, and BillyQ’s vision-processing capability gives Poolhouse a proprietary data and experience layer that pure venue operators cannot replicate. The investment signals that the formula is being extended from golf into cue sports, with technology at the centre rather than as an afterthought.

The week also delivered one of the year’s most distinct developments. Here’s a stat to sit with: sports made up 29.2% of all ad-supported TV viewing in Q4 2025. That’s not a typo, and it’s not a fluke. Sports content isn’t just holding its ground in a fragmenting media world, it’s actively pulling ahead.

But here’s where it gets interesting. Where people are watching, and who is watching, looks nothing like it did five years ago.

Nielsen just dropped its “Top 10 Trends to Watch,” in partnership with FIFA, and it paints a picture of a fanbase that’s more diverse, more digital, and more scattered across platforms than ever. We paired it with Deloitte’s 2026 Global Sports Industry Outlook to get the full picture of not just who’s watching, but how the business of sports needs to adapt.

The FAST Channel Boom Nobody’s Talking About

Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) channels aren’t a side story anymore. Sports-related FAST channels grew 15% YoY as of early 2026, and it signals something rights holders can’t ignore: distribution is no longer a walled garden owned by three or four major networks.

Smaller leagues and niche competitions now have a real, low-cost path to build their own always-on channel, without needing a traditional broadcast deal to do it.

Niche sports are having a real moment

Pickleball isn’t a punchline anymore, thanks in part to its recent $225 million investment. Major tournaments are pulling in up to 791,000 viewers, with Texas and Florida driving serious momentum.

Meanwhile, the WNBA Draft saw a 19% jump in total viewership from 2025 to 2026, and the audience is getting younger too, with median viewer age dropping from 56 to 53. That’s a league actively winning over a new generation (albeit by a slim margin), not just retaining an existing one.

Sports fandom is becoming genuinely multicultural, and platforms haven’t caught up

Soccer is the clearest example. 82% of Hispanic soccer fans are Gen Z or Millennials. Black American audiences are emerging as leaders in multi-sport fandom, with 28% expressing strong interest in soccer specifically, well beyond what most rights holders have historically planned for.

And these fans don’t consume the way general audiences do. Soccer fans lean heavily on YouTube (80% vs. 63% for general sports audiences) and Instagram (74% vs. 50%) for their sports information. If your distribution strategy is still TV-first, you’re missing where a huge chunk of the next generation of fans actually lives.

Nielsen vs. Deloitte: Two Lenses, One Industry

This is where it gets useful for anyone building in sports tech. Nielsen tells you who’s watching and where. Deloitte tells you how the business needs to be built to capture it.

Nielsen and Deloitte approach the following from fundamentally different angles: Nielsen is primarily an audience and performance measurement firm focused on who is watching, how they are watching, and what that means for sponsors and media buyers; Deloitte is a professional services firm focused on the commercial, operational, and financial architecture needed to scale women’s sports as a business asset class.

Focus and audience

Nielsen’s lens is audience-centric: it tracks demographics, viewership trends, and platform habits, asking questions like “Who is watching the WNBA Draft or NWSL matches, on which channels, and for how long?” Its value is for brands, broadcasters, and leagues that need precise, data-driven insights about fans and consumption behaviour. Deloitte’s lens is enterprise-centric: it looks at operations, capital, governance, and scalability, treating women’s sports as a distinct, scaling commercial asset class that needs new business models, ownership structures, and investment strategies.

How technology is framed

For Nielsen, technology is largely about distribution and engagement: how content reaches digital-first viewers via FAST platforms, YouTube, Instagram, and other streaming and social channels, and how that shapes reach, retention, and monetisation opportunity. For Deloitte, technology is infrastructure: AI as an operational backbone, digital twins for venue and operational planning, smart venues, and data systems that enable better decision-making, risk management, and long-term growth.

Women’s sports and monetisation

Nielsen highlights growth metrics and audience dynamics, such as the WNBA Draft’s +19% growth in certain demographics and steady NWSL viewership gains, to show that demand is rising and to inform sponsorship conversion and direct-to-consumer touchpoints. Deloitte, by contrast, quantifies women’s sports in revenue terms (projecting at least $3 billion globally in 2026) and frames monetisation around institutional capital, ownership portfolios, and real estate, arguing that the sector needs mature investment frameworks and new commercial models to sustain that growth.

Put simply: Nielsen shows you the fragmentation. Deloitte shows you why fragmentation without infrastructure is a missed opportunity, not a threat.

Where This Leaves SportsTech

Four structural shifts stand out for anyone building in this space:

1. Agentic, hyper-personalised fan engagement. As fans scatter across YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, AI needs to become the connective tissue. Expect a wave of sports AI agents built to automate fan interactions and generate content slices tailored to specific audiences, like young Hispanic soccer fans or multi-sport Black American audiences, rather than one-size-fits-all campaigns.

2. FAST channel infrastructure as a real business. With sports FAST channels up 15% YoY, there’s growing demand for low-friction, cloud-based tools that let rights holders spin up localised, automated feeds complete with AI-generated highlights and dynamic ad insertion.

3. Data engines built for multicultural segmentation. Most sports properties are sitting on fan data they don’t know how to use. Startups that can cross-reference that data to serve distinct fan sub-segments, rather than treating “fans” as one monolithic group, are going to be in high demand.

4. Asset-light software for emerging leagues. Pickleball and its peers are scaling fast, but without the legacy tech stack of the NFL or Premier League. That’s a real opening for all-in-one platforms covering ticketing, camera tracking, and player analytics out of the box (something we spoke more in depth on in the previous issue).

The Bottom Line

Sports isn’t losing its audience, it’s redistributing it. The winners over the next few years won’t be the properties with the biggest legacy footprint; they’ll be the ones who can meet a fragmented, multicultural, digital-first fanbase exactly where it already is.

A day before this issue was meant to be sent out, a new press release was announced. The Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA) had named a new official ticketing platform across all its events, becoming the first volleyball region in the USA to adopt facial authentication for tournament gate entry.

There’s a well-worn analogy from the California Gold Rush that gets used a lot in investing circles. The people who got rich weren’t always the ones searching for gold. They were the ones selling the picks and shovels to the people panning for gold.

It’s a useful lens for where the most interesting money in sports tech is moving right now.

For the better part of a decade, the loudest conversation in sports tech has been about the entertainment and fan engagement layer, think second screen experiences, personalisation engines, dynamic ticketing, broadcast enhancements, etc. All legitimate. All important. But there’s a quieter category of company that has been building something less glamorous and arguably more durable: the operational infrastructure that keeps sport functioning in the background. The scheduling engine. The travel and logistics layer. The event management stack. The compliance and revenue plumbing that nobody sees and everybody depends on.

Where major league partnerships spanning the NBA, NHL, World Rugby, MLS, LaLiga, Serie A, and 60+ others, can be seen alongside amateur and collegiate sports, not forgetting convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) and sports tourism organisations. At first glance, the connection between all three would be hard to make sense of, but dig a little deeper and you start to uncover the threads that bring the these facets under one cohesive view.

Fastbreak AI is the clearest current example of what that looks like when it’s done well.

What They’re Actually Solving For

The original problem Fastbreak set out to fix was scheduling. Not in the abstract sense, but in the very specific, operationally painful sense that anyone who has built a season schedule for a professional league manually will recognise immediately.

Scheduling at that level is extraordinarily complex. You’re balancing venue availability, travel burdens, rest days, competitive fairness, broadcast commitments, and a long list of constraints that shift constantly. Build it on spreadsheets, which is what most organisations were doing, and you’re spending months of manual labour on something that still produces conflicts and inefficiencies that cost real money.

Fastbreak’s pitch is that AI can stress-test far more scenarios than human planners can, faster, and with better visibility into the downstream effects of any given decision. Over 65 professional leagues globally now trust them to do exactly that. A Fast Company profile described the platform as controlling when “billions of dollars” in sports inventory are deployed. That is not a peripheral function. That is the operating heartbeat of a league’s entire commercial calendar.

From scheduling, Fastbreak expanded into the adjacent operational layers: tournament management, travel coordination, ticketing, sponsorship, and brand activations. The stated goal is to run every aspect of an event on one connected platform. They’re not there yet, but they’re moving deliberately in that direction.

The Deals That Signal Where This Is Going

In November 2025, Fastbreak closed a $40 million Series A. The investor list is worth paying attention to: Greycroft and GTMfund led, with participation from the NBA, NHL, and TMRW Sports. When the leagues themselves are writing cheques into the company running their scheduling infrastructure, that tells you something about how strategically important the relationship has become.

Two deals since the raise are the ones to watch.

In January 2026, Fastbreak announced a long-term strategic partnership with LaSource, a move designed to support European expansion and bring the platform to professional leagues and clubs across the continent. It’s the kind of partnership that signals Fastbreak isn’t just building product; they’re building market access through established channels in a territory where they don’t yet have deep roots.

Then in April 2026, they acquired GroupHousing, a group hotel booking and housing management company, and the implications of that one run deeper than the headline suggests. Group travel in amateur sports has, by Fastbreak’s own description, been “stuck running on manual processes and disconnected software for decades.” Hotel bookings handled over email. Room blocks tracked on spreadsheets. Rebate revenue leaking away unmonitored. GroupHousing brought Fastbreak hundreds of thousands of annual room nights, hotel contracting expertise, and direct relationships with major hotel brands across the US and Canada.

What the acquisition actually does is shift Fastbreak from being a scheduling software vendor into something closer to an infrastructure consolidator. The platform is no longer just helping organisers plan events. It is starting to own a bigger slice of the event economy, the part where teams move, sleep, and get to the venue. For tournament operators, the experience now connects room block pickup, rebate revenue, stay-to-play compliance, registration, and scheduling data in one place. That’s a meaningfully different value proposition than the one they started with.

The USTA partnership reinforces the scale of the ambition. Fastbreak will handle roughly millions of matches, over 300,000 players, and 2 million court hours annually across 17 sections. Youth and amateur sports represent a vastly larger addressable market than elite leagues, and Fastbreak is clearly building toward both, simultaneously.

What This Means for the Industry

The pattern Fastbreak represents is becoming more visible across the sports tech landscape. Organisations are no longer experimenting with technology for novelty’s sake. They want measurable ROI, reduced operational friction, and systems that scale. A recent Sportradar survey found that 82% of sports organisations have adopted AI, and nearly three quarters say it has already delivered tangible value. The infrastructure layer is where that value is increasingly accumulating.

For PE firms and growth investors, Fastbreak is a textbook picks and shovels business. It’s enterprise SaaS, it solves a mission-critical operational problem, and it has the kind of customer stickiness that makes investors sleep well at night. When the NBA is your scheduling engine, you don’t get swapped out lightly. The switching costs are enormous, the renewal logic is strong, and the land-and-expand model creates a natural revenue expansion engine that doesn’t require constantly winning new logos.

The youth and amateur sports angle is also significant. Elite leagues are a prestigious but finite market. Youth sports in North America alone is a multi-billion dollar industry, and it has historically been chronically underserved by decent software. Any company that can bring genuine operational infrastructure to that market, at scale, is sitting on a much larger opportunity than their professional league contracts suggest.

What It Means for Fastbreak

The $40 million raise, the league partnerships, the European foothold, and the GroupHousing acquisition all point in the same direction: Fastbreak is building for consolidation at the platform level, not at the company level. The aim appears to be becoming the operating system for sport, the layer that everything else eventually runs on top of.

That’s an ambitious target. The risks are real. Expanding into Europe is expensive and operationally complex. Integrating an acquisition while simultaneously scaling a core product is a management burden that has derailed more than a few companies that looked well-positioned. And the youth sports market, while large, is also fragmented, price-sensitive, and structurally different from elite leagues in ways that don’t always translate cleanly.

But the underlying thesis is sound. Sport, at every level, is an enormously complex logistical operation that has been run on legacy tools and manual processes for far too long. The companies that solve for that, not just the visible, fan-facing surface of the industry, but the invisible machinery underneath it, are probably the ones that will matter most in ten years.

Fastbreak AI is making a credible case for being one of them.

If you’ve watched a horse race, a rugby international, or a UFC fight in the last few years and found yourself thinking “how are they getting that angle?” — this newsletter is the answer to that question.

I’ll be honest with you: before Nathan Horrocks reached out to me, I knew this camera technology existed but I didn’t know much about the companies behind it. And I definitely didn’t know that the most technically sophisticated wearable camera operation in professional sport was being run out of a company that started because its founder used to ride horses for a living.

Nathan is the co-founder and CEO of Povora, previously known as JockeyCam, a name that tells you exactly where this story begins. He’s a former jockey who looked at the broadcast of his sport and thought there was a better way to put the viewer inside the action. What followed is one of those founder journeys that sounds improbable until you see the product, at which point it seems almost inevitable.

Rebranding From One Sport to Many

The transition from JockeyCam to Povora wasn’t just a superficial rebrand. It was a signal to clients, to governing bodies, and to the broadcast industry, that the company had outgrown its origin.

What started in horseracing expanded because other sports came asking. Rugby unions, American football leagues, combat sports organisations all wanted to know whether the same technology that was transforming the horseracing broadcast experience could be adapted to their environments. Povora’s answer, consistently, was yes. But the engineering reality of that answer was considerably more complicated than the word suggests.

The standard offerings in this space are the bodycam and the ear cam. Most competitors offer two camera types. Povora offers four, and the additional two, the helmet cam and the cap cam, are where the company’s technical ambition becomes clearest. These aren’t iterative improvements on existing products. They’re genuinely difficult engineering problems that required solving challenges nobody in the space had previously attempted at this level.

It’s those two products, and the technical credibility they represent, that earned Povora an ESPN partnership and a Sports Emmy nomination.

The Engineering Problems Nobody Talks About

When you watch a cap cam feed from a rugby match and the picture is stable despite the player sprinting, changing direction, and taking contact, you’re watching the output of something called horizon lock stabilisation. When you receive that feed in the broadcast truck with no meaningful delay, you’re benefiting from sub-120 millisecond latency. Both of these things sound like technical specifications. They are also, in practice, extraordinarily hard to achieve simultaneously on hardware that has to be light enough to wear during elite sport.

I asked Nathan what the hardest part of integrating Povora’s proprietary hardware into existing Outside Broadcast truck workflows was, specifically the challenge of operating in the crowded radio frequency environments of large stadiums.

His answer was insightful. The cameras perform reliably in a stadium of ten to fifteen thousand people. Scale that to fifty thousand, and you’re operating in a completely different RF environment — one where signal disruption and network blockage aren’t edge cases, they’re the baseline condition. Engineering for that environment, reliably, across different stadiums with different infrastructure, is a fundamentally different problem than building a camera that works in a controlled setting.

Povora’s solution is to provide low-latency wireless video streams with full inline colour control, allowing vision mixers in OB trucks to match POV feeds directly with traditional broadcast cameras. The technical elegance of that solution is that it doesn’t ask broadcasters to rebuild their workflows around a new technology, it integrates into what already exists.

Getting Governing Bodies to Say Yes

There’s an aspect of this business that doesn’t get discussed enough in sports tech coverage which is the regulatory and safety approval process for putting hardware on athletes’ bodies during live competition.

Player associations and governing bodies are, understandably, cautious about anything that goes onto a field of play. The question isn’t just whether the camera works, it’s whether it’s safe during high-impact collisions, whether it affects performance, and whether it meets the specific safety standards of each sport’s governing body.

I asked Nathan directly how Povora navigates the rigorous testing required to prove that a bodycam or cap cam won’t cause injury during contact. His answer revealed a process that’s as much about relationship-building as it is about engineering.

Povora works directly with State Athletic Commissions, World Rugby, and organisations like Power Slap to validate their technology against sport-specific safety standards. The hardware is engineered to be extraordinarily light, limiting added mass and inertia during collisions. The BodyCam fits into custom baselayer vests. The CapCam integrates into standard sports caps. The design philosophy prioritises invisibility to the athlete, to the governing body, and to the viewer.

There’s a detail Nathan mentioned in passing that stuck with me, and I couldn’t help but laugh. A Povora camera once prevented a serious injury to a jockey. The technology that started as a broadcast tool ended up functioning as protective equipment. It’s an unintended consequence that says something about how close to the athlete this hardware operates.

Beyond Broadcast To Performance Analytics

Povora has been working with the University of Exeter on live IMU (inertial measurement unit) and GPS tracking integration, which raises a question that goes well beyond broadcast entertainment: are teams beginning to want this wearable data for performance analytics?

The short answer is yes, and it’s a direction the company sees itself moving toward organically. Teams want to review footage from the athlete’s perspective as a coaching and feedback tool. Officials want to use the recordings to assess their own decision-making to review exactly what they were seeing in real time when they made a call, and to identify where their positioning or sight lines could be improved.

This is a meaningful expansion of what a wearable camera system is for. What’s Coming Next

The most forward-looking conversation I had with Nathan was about gaze-tracking. Povora is working with ESPN on a new BodyCam system that incorporates eye-tracking — the ability to show, in real time, exactly where a quarterback is looking pre-snap, or where a referee’s eyes are when they’re making a decision.

When I asked whether that was genuinely the goal, to show audiences where the athlete is actually looking, his answer was an emphatic yes.

Think about what that means for a moment. Not just the camera angle from the athlete’s perspective, but the precise focal point of their attention overlaid on that feed. For fans, that’s a window into athletic cognition that broadcasting hasn’t been able to open before. For coaches and analysts, it’s a data source that reframes performance review entirely. And for the broadcast industry, it’s a new layer of storytelling that this technology currently provides.

On the question of which sport has proven hardest to crack technically, Nathan pointed to the sport that required the cap cam, an answer that tells you something about how Povora thinks about its own product development. The hardest problem is the one that produces the most defensible innovation.

The conversation also came off the back of Povora’s recent involvement with the UFL’s 2026 FAST programme, the league’s Football Advancement through Sports Technology initiative. Nathan described it as a success, which given the UFL’s ambition around broadcast innovation, is a meaningful data point about where wearable camera technology sits in American football’s product roadmap.

Why This Company Matters

I want to close with something that isn’t in the product spec or the Emmy nomination.

Povora is the kind of sports tech company that this newsletter exists to cover. One doing genuinely difficult technical work, in a space most people don’t know exists, with a founder story that makes the product make sense. Nathan Horrocks didn’t build a wearable camera company because he identified a market gap in a pitch deck. He built it because he rode horses and saw the broadcast of his sport differently than everyone else in the industry did.

That origin matters. The best sports tech tends to come from people who understand sport from the inside, who know what the athlete experiences, what the broadcast misses, and where the gap between the two is wide enough to build something into.

Povora found that gap in horseracing and has been widening it across sports ever since.

Let me start with a number: 5%.

That’s the accuracy rate of leading AI models when asked to perform complex post-game statistical analysis, what researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Northeastern University call “agency” tasks. Not 50%. Not 25%. Five percent. Roughly the same probability as correctly guessing a coin flip twice in a row.

Now let me give you a second number: one day.

That’s the gap between the publication of the UNC/Northeastern study on AI’s fundamental inability to understand sports, and the Ben-Gurion University study warning about the dangerous consequences of deploying that same flawed technology in talent scouting. Two institutions, two countries, two methodologies, both arriving at the same uncomfortable conclusion within a month of each other.

Make of that timing what you will. I know what I make of it.

What We Actually Mean When We Say “AI Understands Sport”

There’s a distinction buried in the UNC/Northeastern research that the industry needs to sit with. AI can describe sport, but it cannot understand it.

Feed a model 35,000 hours of match footage and it will tell you, with impressive accuracy, what happened on screen. The player moved left. A shot was taken. A goal was scored. This is description, and AI is genuinely good at it. It’s why automated highlight generation works, why broadcast tagging has improved, and why a lot of the efficiency gains we’ve celebrated in sports media production are real.

But the moment you ask why the shot was taken, what the player was reading in the defensive shape, or what’s likely to happen next, the wheels come off.

The researchers tested AI across four core sports reasoning skills using something they built called SVI-bench (strategic video intelligence). The results are worth sitting with:

Causal reasoning: understanding why a play happened, dropped to 40% accuracy. Simulation: predicting player movement and trajectory hovered around 50%, which is statistically indistinguishable from a coin flip. And agency: complex post-game statistical analysis, which collapsed to 5%.

To put that last number in context: if a front office executive replaced their human analyst with an AI system and asked it to perform the kind of post-game breakdown that informs roster decisions, they would be working with outputs that are wrong nineteen times out of twenty. That’s not a tool with limitations. That’s a liability dressed up as an innovation.

The Scouting Problem Is Worse Than You Think

If the UNC/Northeastern findings are a warning about AI’s technical ceiling, the Ben-Gurion University study is a warning about what happens when organisations ignore that ceiling and deploy the technology anyway, particularly in talent identification.

The BGU researchers focused on youth scouting, and what they found should concern anyone who cares about where the next generation of athletes comes from.

AI scouting systems are trained on historical data. Historical data reflects historical inequalities. And when an algorithm can’t directly measure athletic potential because, as the UNC study confirms, it doesn’t actually understand the game — it starts reaching for proxy indicators. Neighbourhood. School background. Socioeconomic status. Social media presence.

The algorithm isn’t doing this maliciously. It’s doing it because these variables correlate with outcomes in the historical data it was trained on. But correlation isn’t causation, and the effect is that a system sold as objective talent identification is quietly functioning as a socioeconomic filter. If your family can’t afford to live in the right postcode, or if you develop physically at 16 rather than 13, the algorithm may have already written you off before a human scout ever watches your tape (yikes!).

The BGU researchers call this “early determinism”: essentially it is the locking in of conclusions about young athletes at an age where human development is still wildly variable. Late bloomers, by definition, don’t show up well in early data. Which means an AI-first scouting infrastructure is structurally biased against the kind of player who defies early prediction. Think of how many careers that description fits!

The Privacy Issue Nobody Is Talking About

There’s a third dimension to the BGU findings that deserves more attention than it’s getting in the coverage I’ve seen.

Youth sports tracking generates enormous datasets. Performance metrics, biometric data, location information, social media activity — all collected on children, often without meaningful informed consent from the athletes themselves. The BGU researchers raise serious questions about what happens to that data long-term, and who has access to it beyond the original sporting context.

This isn’t a hypothetical concern. Data collected on a 12-year-old for the purposes of football scouting doesn’t disappear when that child decides not to pursue professional sport. It exists somewhere, it belongs to someone, and the regulatory frameworks governing its use are, to put it mildly, underdeveloped. The sports industry has been so focused on what it can collect that it hasn’t asked hard enough questions about what it should collect, and what obligations come with collecting it.

What the Industry Gets Wrong About These Findings

I want to push back gently on the most common reaction I expect these studies will receive, which is some version of: “Yes, but AI will get better.”

Maybe. Probably, in some areas. But that response misses the point the researchers are actually making.

The UNC/Northeastern team isn’t arguing that today’s models are imperfect versions of a future perfect model. They’re arguing that the kind of understanding required to truly analyse sport, such as causal reasoning, strategic simulation, reading human agency and intent, may represent a fundamentally different category of problem than the pattern recognition tasks that current AI architecture excels at. Describing what happened is a pattern recognition task. Understanding why it happened requires something closer to theory of mind.

Similarly, the BGU researchers aren’t saying that bias is a bug that better training data will eventually fix. They’re saying that when you deploy a system that can’t understand human development on decisions about human potential, you will systematically disadvantage the people your historical data has already disadvantaged. That’s not a technical problem. It’s an ethical one.

What Good Actually Looks Like

To their credit, neither research team is calling for AI to be abandoned. What they’re calling for is considerably more demanding than that.

Blind scouting approaches, stripping identifiable demographic and socioeconomic information from footage before AI analysis, would prevent algorithms from using a postcode as a proxy for talent. Mandatory human oversight, keeping experienced scouts and analysts as the final decision-makers rather than reviewers of algorithmic outputs, would compensate for the 40–95% failure rates in strategic reasoning. Transparent governance, forcing AI models to disclose exactly what they’re weighting, would make hidden bias visible and therefore challengeable. And strict ethical safeguards around youth data collection would begin to address a privacy exposure that the industry has largely chosen not to look at directly.

None of this is radical. All of it requires the industry to be honest about what AI currently is, a powerful tool for automating description and processing volume, rather than what the marketing around it claims it to be.

The Broader Point

I’ve spent a significant portion of this year covering reports that document AI’s rapid adoption across sports: the Sportradar data showing 82% AI adoption rates, the Altman Solon findings on AI-driven content production, the Drake Star capital flows into AI-enabled platforms. The momentum is real and the investment is substantial.

But momentum and investment are not the same thing as readiness. And the uncomfortable implication of these two studies is that the industry may have moved from experimentation to deployment faster than the technology’s actual capabilities warrant.

The human scout reading a 15-year-old’s body language, understanding the context of a difficult family situation, or recognising the competitive fire that doesn’t show up in sprint metrics isn’t a legacy process waiting to be automated. According to two independent research teams publishing simultaneously, it’s currently irreplaceable.

The sports executives, analysts, and scouts reading this can take some comfort in that. The young athletes whose futures are being filtered by algorithms that don’t understand sport, and whose childhood data is being harvested without adequate protection — probably can’t.

The German Football Association acquired a stake in coaching platform Coachbetter to become a strategic shareholder, extending digital infrastructure for amateur football in a move that mirrors last week’s DFB.TV+ launch in its ambition to build owned digital capability.

And Neymar Jr’s use of NASA-developed rehabilitation technology as part of his World Cup squad return added an unexpected dimension to the week’s performance technology conversation, elite sport’s willingness to draw from aerospace and defence R&D for athlete recovery reflecting how porous the boundary between sports science and broader technology development has become.

But it also confirms a lot of what we’ve already covered — from Capstone Partners’ deep dive into how private equity roll-ups are quietly reshaping the sports tech M&A landscape, to the dedicated sports fund wave I wrote about recently, to the conversation I had with a department head at a major sporting agency about where institutional capital is actually flowing. The threads were already there. Drake Star just tied them together with $130.6 billion worth of receipts.

So rather than repeating what we’ve already covered, let’s focus on what’s new, what’s been confirmed, and what the aggregate picture now looks like.

The Headline Number, and What’s Behind It

Total disclosed deal value hit $130.6 billion across 239 transactions in Q1 2026 alone. M&A dominated at $114.6 billion across 107 transactions, while private placements remained resilient at $2.9 billion across 117 fundraises, closely mirroring Q1 of the prior year.

Before you reach for superlatives, it’s worth noting that a significant chunk of that M&A figure is driven by the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery at a $110 billion enterprise value. It’s a landmark media consolidation deal, but characterising it as sports tech feels like a stretch. It’s a broadcasting infrastructure play, and a massive one, but not quite the same category as what we typically track here. Strip it out and the picture is still compelling, just more grounded.

What remains is a market in genuine structural maturation: fewer deals, larger bets, and capital concentrating around proven platforms rather than speculative ideas. We saw this pattern in the Capstone report with deal volume down, and total financing value surging. Drake Star’s Q1 data reinforces it.

Where the Interesting M&A Actually Is

Set aside the mega-media consolidation, and three deals from Q1 deserve your attention.

1. Genius Sports acquiring Legend for up to $1.2 billion is the clearest signal yet that sports data companies are evolving into full-stack digital media and advertising platforms. The deal brings programmatic fan activation and digital media capabilities into Genius Sports’ existing data infrastructure, exactly the kind of capability reinforcement that Capstone identified as the defining M&A pattern of this cycle. This isn’t a company buying a competitor. It’s a platform buying a conversion mechanism.

2. GTCR’s $400 million acquisition of LiveBarn tells the youth sports infrastructure story better than any trend piece could. LiveBarn owns automated streaming for youth sports — millions of games annually, content that parents pay for, footage that athletes use for recruiting, and data that platforms can mine for talent identification. GTCR didn’t pay $400 million for current revenue. They paid for the entry point to lifelong fan relationships at scale. Pixellot securing $35 million in growth funding immediately afterward wasn’t a coincidence.

3. Teamworks absorbing Pro Football Focus at roughly $100 million is quieter but arguably more strategically significant for the B2B layer. PFF’s institutional football data engine is now integrated into Teamworks’ athlete and operations platform, deepening its penetration across NFL and collegiate environments. For anyone building in the performance analytics or team operations space, this signals that the consolidation of B2B sports data infrastructure is accelerating.

Where Capital is Flowing

If you’ve been following this newsletter since the tail end of last year, none of the points mentioned below would come as a surprise. If anything, you would’ve noticed these in the weekly recap newsletters.

• Prediction Markets: From Fringe to Foundation

This is the section of the report I’d encourage you to read most carefully, because the capital flows here represent a genuine category redefinition rather than incremental growth.

Kalshi raised $1 billion at a $22 billion post-money valuation, with weekly event-trading volumes now surpassing $1 billion. Polymarket received a $600 million strategic investment from Intercontinental Exchange, the parent organisation of the New York Stock Exchange. Lastly, Novig closed a $75 million Series B at a $500 million valuation for its decentralised sports prediction market platform.

The NYSE’s parent company putting $600 million into a prediction market platform is not a sports story. It’s a financial infrastructure story that happens to be routed through sports. As I wrote when covering the Drake Star full year 2025 report, prediction markets aren’t primarily gambling platforms, they’re fan intelligence infrastructure that turns sentiment into tradeable, analysable signals. When ICE validates that thesis with institutional capital at that scale, the category has officially arrived.

• Wearables, Brain Tech, and the Kings League

Three further deals worth flagging from the private placement side.

WHOOP’s $575 million Series G at a $10.1 billion valuation, with capital earmarked for expansion across Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the GCC, confirms that elite biometric wearables have crossed from performance tool to consumer health platform. The geographic expansion story here is the one to watch.

Temple’s $54 million raise for a brain-monitoring wearable that tracks cerebral blood flow and real-time neurological biomarkers is the most forward-looking deal in the entire report. Cognitive performance safety is an emerging category that sits at the intersection of sports tech and occupational health, territory that, as we noted in the Norwegian sports tech ecosystem piece, elite performance technology is increasingly colonising.

And then there’s the Kings League securing $63 million for global expansion, including the United States. Gerard Piqué’s creator-led, gamified football format is no longer a novelty experiment. It’s a capitalised platform with institutional backing. For anyone still dismissing creator-economy sports formats as content plays rather than structural competition, this is the deal that should change your mind.

• The Fund Wave, Confirmed

The institutional capital picture is completed by over $4 billion in newly announced sports-dedicated funds in Q1 alone: Otro Capital closing at $1.2 billion, Bruin Capital raising $1 billion across two new funds, and Athvance Capital launching a $585 million vehicle targeting historically under-monetised global sports assets.

I wrote about this trend in detail recently, ten new sports-focused funds, billions raised within months of each other, all structured around governance access rather than passive returns. Drake Star’s Q1 data is the confirmation that this isn’t a moment. It’s a sustained institutional re-rating of sports as an asset class.

The common thread across all of it: these funds aren’t buying seats in the stands. They’re buying seats at the table.

• The Early-Stage Paradox

One data point that consistently gets buried beneath the mega-deal headlines deserves its own moment: 80% of all financing deals in Q1 2026 were early-stage. Despite WHOOP and Kalshi dominating the dollar figures, the majority of actual transaction volume is still happening at the seed and Series A layer.

This matters for two reasons. First, it means the innovation pipeline feeding the next M&A cycle is healthy. Second, it means that for every platform being acquired at 11.2x EBITDA today, there are hundreds of companies currently being seeded that will define the 2028 and 2030 consolidation waves.

The infrastructure being built quietly at the early stage right now is what the PE roll-ups will be acquiring in three to five years. If you want to understand where sports tech is going, watch the seed rounds as carefully as the mega-deals.

What This Actually Tells Us

Drake Star’s Q1 2026 report doesn’t fundamentally change the narrative we’ve been building across this newsletter series. What it does is quantify it with a precision that removes any remaining ambiguity.

Sports tech has graduated from a venture bet to institutional infrastructure. The capital markets have decided that owning the systems powering sports, i.e. data, distribution, fan engagement, prediction, performance, is worth more than owning the content or even the teams themselves. The organisations that built that infrastructure early are being acquired at generational premiums. The ones that didn’t are negotiating from positions of increasing weakness.

That’s not a new conclusion. But at $130.6 billion in a single quarter, it’s a conclusion that’s getting harder to argue with.

I stumbled on this one by accident.

I’ve been working through sports IP as a topic — partly out of genuine curiosity, partly because it keeps coming up in conversations I’m having and I’d rather not be caught clueless. One thing led to another, and I landed on WIPO’s Sports Technology SPARK Report 2026. A systematic breakdown of over a decade of patents, trademarks, and design registrations across the global sports tech ecosystem.

The timing was mildly amusing. A week earlier, I’d written a newsletter on why sports leaders are drowning in vendor pitches — too many solutions, not enough differentiation, and executives genuinely not knowing where to start.

Here was a report that, in its opening section, essentially explains why that problem exists. There are now more sports tech inventions, brands, and product designs being filed every year than at any point in history, growing faster than global innovation benchmarks across every single IP category. When the field is expanding that fast, of course it’s hard to cut through.

Anyway. Let’s get into it.

Sports Tech Is Outpacing Global Innovation

The report covers the period from 2016 to 2025 and evaluates three IP categories: patents, trademarks, and design registrations. In all three, sports tech is growing at roughly double the global average.

Patents — which the report uses as a proxy for unique inventions — crossed 65,700 published patent families over the decade, growing at a 7.6% compound annual growth rate. In comparison, global patents overall grew at 4.4%. Sports trademarks cleared 1.25 million new registrations in the same period, at a 6.1% CAGR versus the 3.4% global average. Equally, design filings, which track product aesthetics and ergonomics, came in at 8.3% CAGR, more than double the global 4.0%.

Those are not rounding errors. Sports tech, as an innovation category, is pulling away from the global field in a meaningful and sustained way.

What’s worth sitting with is what each category actually tells you. Patents track where the R&D money is going, think the hard technical bets. Trademarks track commercialisation and brand-building, essentially who is trying to own a market, not just invent in it. Designs track the product layer; aesthetics, ergonomics, and the consumer experience. Together, they give you a reasonably complete picture of an industry that is simultaneously inventing, building, and commercialising at an accelerating rate.

That’s the backdrop against which everything else in this report should be read.

China Holds Nearly Half the Patents

A headline I wasn’t expecting to read or write. Yet, the geographic breakdown is the section that made me put the report down and reread it.

Asia accounts for 63% of global sports patenting activity. North America sits at 22%. Europe at 13%. That alone is striking. But when you go sport by sport, the picture sharpens considerably.

China holds 44% of football patents, nearly 60% of all racket sport patents, over 50% of swimming patents, and more than 40% in cricket. In every major technical sport covered by the report, China is either the dominant or co-dominant inventive hub.

This is worth some context. Patent volume and commercial dominance are not the same thing. The US and UK still hold significant sway through trademark ecosystems. But the technical innovation pipeline, the R&D layer that everything else eventually sits on top of, is increasingly being built in Asia.

In terms of volume by sport, golf leads the field by a considerable distance (something I wasn’t expecting) followed by swimming, racket sports, basketball, and football. That golf tops the list is less surprising when you consider the level of equipment obsession in the sport, and the fact that specialised golf brands like Acushnet, Sumitomo, PING, and Callaway match or exceed the patent portfolios of multi-sport giants like Nike and Adidas.

The growth story, though, belongs to cricket. Starting from a lower absolute baseline, cricket has posted the highest double-digit growth rate of any sport over the past decade. More on what’s driving that in a bit.

Two Technologies Worth Understanding in Detail

• Hawk-Eye

It started as a broadcast enhancement tool. Cricket adopted it formally into the Decision Review System in 2009, which goes some way toward explaining that sport’s IP growth trajectory. Tennis picked it up at the 2006 US Open as a line-challenge mechanism, where it immediately demonstrated 99.9% accuracy compared to 85–90% for human line judges.

Now a Sony Group company, Hawk-Eye’s current iteration delivers Semi-Automated Offside Technology to elite football — instantly detecting the exact kick point, tracing lines, and cutting VAR delays in a way that would have seemed like science fiction when the original patent was filed. It is, as origin stories go, a genuinely instructive one. A broadcast tool became a refereeing tool, which then became the backbone of officiating infrastructure across multiple global sports in under 25 years.

• Wearables

The global wearables market hit approximately $220 billion in 2025. It is projected to reach $500 billion by 2030. To understand how we got here, the report traces a reasonably clean history.

Fitbit was the consumer catalyst — taking analytics that had previously existed only in elite performance environments and making them accessible at scale. Early IP integrated altitude and motion sensors to compute localised calorie burn, which sounds modest until you consider what that normalised in terms of consumer expectation around personal health data.

Garmin moved into endurance sports with specialised GPS tracking and training load monitoring. Apple pivoted the category toward holistic health platforms and biometric integration, effectively reframing the wearable as a medical-adjacent device rather than a fitness accessory.
