It was still early Covid, and although there were many things to be frustrated about regarding the state of the world, the boring yet peaceful time of social distancing, mostly spent at home, offered the perfect conditions for creative inspiration and new ideas to take hold.

During one of those slow summer days, I went for a walk around my neighborhood to get some exercise and catch up on Marco Polos from a new friend I’d met in an online holistic moms group. We’ll call this friend Beverly. She and I had never met in person, but we discovered mutual interests and enjoyed chatting throughout the week about motherhood, natural health, and the complexities of family relationships. Beverly had revealed to me the day before that she was in recovery from alcohol addiction. In these particular video messages, she was telling me about her experience at an in-patient rehab facility.

As I listened to her explain the care and treatment she received at that facility, a flood of conflicting emotions came over me. I was grateful Beverly had found support and sobriety, but I also felt a bit irritated and triggered. Beverly was clearly well cared for and supported during her recovery, but what about all the people who survived her addiction alongside her? I knew the answer: since they weren’t hooked on a substance, they were left to figure it out on their own. It didn’t matter that Beverly’s addiction had likely traumatized them and impacted their lives forever. As long as the addict was on the up and up, everyone else was expected to move on. Some of them were even expected to pay the rehab bill.

Beverly’s stories of addiction, rehab, and recovery just hit too close to home. In all honesty, it’s hard for me to empathize with an addict because I know how much damage they cause to their loved ones, and really anyone they come into contact with. As someone who grew up with a childhood largely defined by a parent’s alcoholism, I couldn’t help but sympathize with her close family and friends, whose wounds were surely never as acknowledged or supported as hers. Because of my upbringing, I related to her stories, but from the point of view of an adult child of an alcoholic, which is an intensely challenging position that comes with a literal laundry list of traits that make thriving in life and relationships difficult, to say the least.

That’s when I first came up with the original working concept for The Restorative Lifestyle Method.

generally what you’d think about in terms of cycle breaking. But growing up, I did very little with my nuclear family (my parents and siblings). I have hardly any special memories of just the five of us, and I believe that’s one of many things that contributed to our lack of stickiness.

Subscribe now

To me, a sticky family is a family that wants to spend time together in all seasons of life, including as the children journey through adulthood and the parents age.

My family of origin didn’t have much chance of making memories or establishing stickiness to begin with. My parents were very young when I was born, my father had already established a lifelong drinking problem, and my experience of my mother was that she didn’t really want to be one. They provided the basics, but for most of my childhood I was swapped between sets of grandparents. Most milestones and big experiences happened with other relatives or my friends’ families. When I was 10 and my parents divorced, things really turned to chaos.

The lack of care and stability in my family meant that I didn’t feel like I belonged anywhere—like I belonged to anyone. And so I developed abandonment and codependency wounds that took me decades to heal.

As an adult and a mother, I mourn the cohesive family life I didn’t have as a child. The lack of stickiness—the lack of a real relationship—among many other things, eventually resulted in estrangement.

The things we didn’t have as kids tend to become our biggest focal points in cycle breaking. Family togetherness, the strength and security of our family unit, and making memories are high priorities for me as a mother. I also genuinely love being a mom, and there’s no alcoholism or addiction between my husband and me, so that helps too.

<a class="image-link It’s a PGA Tour stop that’s been coming to our town for decades. I used to attend with my grandparents, with friends, and with my husband when we were dating. Now, we bring our kids every year. It’s become a family tradition, and while they enjoy the food and giveaways more than the golf, I know they’ll always remember attending together as a family. I dream that in another decade or so, we’ll still be going, but with their wives and children alongside us.

There’s a big difference between wanting to heal from your past and break cycles, and actually doing it. And that’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it is information worth paying attention to, because it points to places where there are still opportunities for healing and growth.

And here’s the cool part:

Subscribe now

You can use the area of your life that needs fixing as the pathway inward.

Our struggles in everyday life lead us toward healing wounds and false conditioning we didn’t even know were there, silently steering us through life.

So, which part of your life needs a little work right now? (For me, it’s fitness, which I explain below.)

As you set out to fix it, you’ll come up against blocks, which are terribly frustrating but critically important, because figuring out how to move through those blocks is where the healing and growth happen.

What might those blocks look like?

Procrastination, laziness, overwhelm, fear of judgment, shame, guilt, inconsistency, quitting…

Each time you come up against a block that prevents you from moving toward your goals, all you have to do is pause and get curious. Ask yourself questions like: What’s stopping me? What am I really afraid of? Whose voice is popping up in my head?

Most of my own journey has been focused on motherhood, relationships, and entrepreneurship/career. Figuring out what was holding me back in those areas propelled my journey forward, to the point where I completely transformed my life. (As I’ve said before, I transformed my life from the outside in, not the other way around, and what I’m describing here is how I did it.)

But there’s always more healing and growth to do, and at this point in my life, fitness is where I’m noticing the biggest differential between what I want and where I’m at.

I’ve never been overweight and have always maintained my general health through good eating and exercise habits. But no matter how determined I’ve been to dial it up and reach my optimal fitness goals, I always end up hovering around average.

There’s nothing wrong with average, unless you’re striving for more. And also, in your 40s, average fitness can quickly slip into frumpy and sluggish. So, I’m recommitted and closely examining what shows up when I lack discipline or want to quit.

My findings have been interesting and informative.

I’ve noticed that when I fail to follow my daily fitness and nutrition plan (e.g. macro tracking and workouts) I start contemplating questions like: What does it even matter? Who cares if I’m fit? Don’t I deserve to eat what I want? Why does everyone else get to eat what they want? Will people think I’m too skinny if I lose weight?

But when I grab a journal and write down honest answers to those questions, it becomes very clear that they have little to do with my adulthood reality.

Here’s what that journaling practice looks like:

What does it even matter if I’m fit? It matters to me, because I want to look and feel my best, and I want to be energetic for myself and for my family.

Who cares if I’m fit? I do.

Don’t I deserve to eat what I want? This has nothing to do with deserving food, and food isn’t a prize for worthiness.

Why does everyone else get to eat what they want? You’re not everyone else. You can eat what you want if you don’t care about your health and fitness. You simply have different goals.

Will people think I’m too skinny if I lose weight? If they do, that’s their problem, and I know I only fear that because my family growing up took being thin as an indication that something was wrong with a person.

All of these questions are rooted in my old conditioning and insecurities: a need to be like everyone else, to feel accepted, and to belong. Realizing this, I can consider if being out of shape just to be validated, accepted, and included would feel right to me. (Of course it wouldn’t.)

That’s just one example of how I’ve been clearing blocks on my fitness journey, and it’s a process you can apply to any area of your life. If you’d like help identifying and moving through your own blocks, feel free to book a coaching session with me.

You can also progress at your own pace by following the guidance in my book here on Substack: The Restorative Lifestyle Method: 4 Steps to Trauma-Informed Holistic Healing + Empowerment for Adult Daughters of Dysfunctional Families.

Is your house a mess? Are you in debt? Are you stalled in your career? How are your relationships going?

Pick one thing and see what a little focus and intention can do. You’re not just fixing a problem, you’re following a thread back to yourself.

Xo,

Danielle

The Restorative Lifestyle Method HANDBOOK is a reader-supported publication. We’re talking a whole different world, seeing red, too far gone emotionally to get my work done. All because of a 1-minute conversation with an orthodontist. Ugh.

Subscribe now

We’ve been with this ortho practice for a few years, and there’s a wonderful dentist we typically see. It’s noted in our chart that we only want to see him, because we really like him (he’s the reason we contracted with this practice for my son’s braces) and also because I don’t care for the other orthodontist there. I’ve observed her (we’ll call her Dr. L) for nearly 2 years now in the close quarters of the dental office, and I’ve noticed she shifts the tone and pitch of her voice depending on who she’s speaking to. I’ve also watched her treat the dental assistants quite poorly. Both of those are immediate red flags for me, as they signal fakeness and feelings of superiority. On top of those observations, I don’t like her style of care with my son or her attitude with me.

So, I set a boundary with this practice that I only wanted to see our primary orthodontist.

The office staff was more than happy to note my preference, but for whatever reason (maybe the office forgot or the note slipped off our chart), I kept arriving to appointments only to find that our primary ortho wasn’t available and we’d have to see Dr. L. I didn’t immediately address this because it’s a boundary situation where some flexibility is necessary. In orthodontics, visits are every 4-6 weeks for years, and sometimes scheduling doesn’t work out. But this was becoming too frequent, and Dr. L’s behavior and communication had become increasingly concerning.

I decided to give it one last appointment (we still have a year left of braces), and that was enough to push me over the edge. Our primary ortho wasn’t there, again, and this woman’s demeanor and attitude were worse than ever. She simply could not be bothered with my questions, which was evident by her rolling her eyes (which she thought was subtle) and turning her back on me as I started to speak. When I insisted that I had a couple of questions about my son’s progress and the plan moving forward, she said to me, verbatim, “I don’t expect you to be able to comprehend this process.”

Umm, excuse me, wut?

I played it cool. We all have a line where we’re done dealing with someone, and that was my line. No need to further interact with this woman. I smiled and said, “thank you very much” once I pried a tiny bit of info from her. My next step is to escalate the issue and speak to my primary ortho (who also owns the practice). I’ve already left a message for him to call me on Monday.

My learning here is that maybe I was too flexible and should have escalated sooner. Next time I will.

You know, it’s one thing for someone to be rude and condescending. It reaches a whole other level when your kid’s health and wellbeing is involved.

Anyway, I was massively triggered and completely overcome by emotion as I walked out of that office.

As adults, this is often how our dysfunctional childhood shows up for us. A conversation, an experience, or a person triggers an old wound, false belief, or insecurity, and our nervous system flies into fight, flight, or freeze because it perceives a threat. We may not even consciously know what the threat is, but our bodies sure do.

Fifteen years ago, I would have handled this very differently.

I would have let things go with the orthodontist and just sucked it up, then vented and complained to my husband, splashed my triggered state onto everyone around me, and eventually stuffed the feelings all back into my body. I would have been too uncomfortable. The necessary conversations would have felt too awkward. And I simply didn’t have the skills yet to process the experience or leverage it for my healing and growth.

If that sounds familiar, the work I share inside my book, The Restorative Lifestyle Method, is exactly how I learned to do things differently. If you’re looking for a detailed roadmap along the healing journey, upgrade your subscription to begin reading. It’s just $12/month, cancel anytime.

Now, I know exactly what to do, and I’ve been immersed in this journey long enough that triggers are few and far between.

When I do find myself triggered these days, here’s how I handle it:

Allow myself to feel the emotions. Whether it’s anger, fear, shame, or any other intense emotion, I let myself feel it so I can process rather than lodge things in my body, only for them to show up again later, probably at some inconvenient time.

Communicate with loved ones. I let my family know that I need space to process, and I explain why I may seem off or distracted. Too often, our triggered state leads us to behaviors or interactions we later regret because we hand control over to our emotions.

Take care of myself. When my body is activated, it’s not in my best interest to force anything that isn’t absolutely necessary. Chores, business deliverables, workouts, and social interactions can all wait while I rest and sit with what’s happening in my body. I also try to avoid distractions that would block the processing.

Journal through it. I fully complete the processing of what’s happened by conversing with myself on paper. I explore questions like: What actually happened today? Why was I triggered? What emotions showed up? Where did the emotions show up in my body? What old wounds or beliefs might those emotions be connected to? How would the healed version of me handle this situation? How do I step back into my power as an adult woman?

This process moves me out of victim mentality (That woman did something to me. I am under threat.) and back into my power (I can see now that she wanted me to feel small and inferior, and it triggered old wounds around not being allowed to speak my truth. However, she doesn’t actually have authority over me. I can escalate this at the orthodontics office and reinstate my boundary of only seeing the doctor I prefer.)

Not only does this process resolve my current activated state, but it also helps me learn more about myself and will likely disempower this trigger in the future.

The more we process something, and the more we commit to doing the work rather than shoving things away, the clearer and more spacious our emotional landscape becomes.

I love sharing these types of stories with you because they’re real-life examples of what the healing journey actually looks like. It’s not perfect. Things get messy sometimes. We still get triggered. But our awareness grows, our toolbox expands, and everyday experiences like this one become fuel to power the journey forward (rather than just annoyances that trigger and disempower us).

If you’d like to learn my holistic approach to healing and empowerment after dysfunctional family trauma, upgrade your subscription here on Substack to just $12/month to read my book: The Restorative Lifestyle Method: 4 Steps to Trauma-Informed Holistic Healing and Empowerment for Adult Daughters of Dysfunctional Families.

Start reading here.

Xo,

Danielle

The Restorative Lifestyle Method HANDBOOK is a reader-supported publication. Often, we are mothers, literally shaping the future of humanity by breaking cycles and raising happy, connected children.

I simply could not move fast enough to get out of their way.

The Restorative Lifestyle Method HANDBOOK is a reader-supported publication. With codependency, we find ourselves so consumed by fear of what others may think, feel, or say that our entire body activates and we enter fight or flight. Rushing to vacate our parking spot before we’re truly ready is a perfect example of flight (i.e. let me get out of your way quickly so you get what you want and I don’t have to deal with your anger.)

How do we begin to undo the codependent need to people please and shapeshift?

We practice staying still when the discomfort shows up. We sit in the heaviness of a moment when we know someone else is experiencing emotions, opinions, and judgment directed our way. We show ourselves that those things can’t actually hurt us — that we are safe, even when someone else is activated. We show ourselves that we can survive it, then simply walk away and continue with our day.

The practice of sitting in your car in a busy parking lot is one of many ways to get your mind and nervous system at ease with discomfort. I didn’t plan on engaging this practice; one day it simply occurred to me that I could sit there and wait, even though someone was hoping I’d get out of their way quickly. So I did. And then I did it again the next time. And this silly practice began transforming my life, because it was the tiny, unexpected kickstart I needed to begin unraveling years of codependency.

These are the things I love talking about, because it’s just not what people expect when they think of healing and growth. But practices like this one are exactly it. We shift little behaviors and decisions first, and those small shifts begin proving new truths to us about reality, which in turn reshapes our entire belief system/operating system. Change your operating system, and life transforms.

There are a number of other examples in Chapter 7: System Override - Rules I Set For Myself in The Restorative Lifestyle Method — because little things like this are genuinely how I transformed my life, and they’re accessible to everyone.

Your challenge this week: What behavior or habit could you shift that might just set a profound transformation in motion?

Hope this gives you something meaningful to sit with over the next week. Sure, they were beneficial in that I learned some hard life lessons, but I kept trying to rebuild (new friendships in particular) only to watch them come crumbling down over and over again.

My most painful friendship breakups happened in the years following my decision to go no contact with certain family members. I realized later I was trying to use new friendships to fill the hole left in my heart by family estrangement.

The “no contact” boundary with family was necessary for me. It was one of the most important decisions of my life. However, that doesn’t mean it was easy. In fact, it was also one of the most painful decisions of my life. Sometimes necessary decisions are painful, and they leave a hole in our hearts that we must heal rather than fill or numb through dysfunctional means.

My biggest learning from those failed rebuilding attempts was this:

You cannot heal the hole in your heart by laying new relationships across it.

When we try to fill that hole with new relationships, we end up using people, most likely activating our codependent tendencies to reel them in. By giving off this needy energy, we are unknowingly setting ourselves up to be crushed because we are attracting narcissists and emotionally immature people at a time when we are at our most raw and vulnerable from having walked away from everything familiar.

New “friends” have crushed me more times than I can count during my healing. I can’t recall ever being that devastated by a friendship before family estrangement, which is how I figured out I was leading with my wounded heart in my rebuilding attempts.

Women often comment on my videos asking how they’re supposed to rebuild their lives with new, healthy relationships without repeating the dysfunctional cycles they’ve been conditioned for. My answer is always some version of: go out into the world and heal in relationship with others.

But what does that mean?

How do we NOT lead with a wounded heart if we are still wounded?

I wrote my online book, The Restorative Lifestyle Method: 4 Steps to Trauma-Informed Holistic Healing + Empowerment for Adult Daughters of Dysfunctional Families, to answer that question — to help you learn from my mistakes and avoid some of the pain and lost time I endured. That’s the value of women handing their stories down: making the path a little easier for the ones coming up behind them.

The Restorative Lifestyle Method is step-by-step guidance for rebuilding your life on your own terms, with personal coaching from me and a growing community of women on the same path.

Awareness is the beginning of pattern correction, but the work is where we complete it and where real transformation happens.

Early bird pricing of $12/month and the 50% off coaching bonus ends May 15! I found myself sitting at my desk, just basking in how perfectly my feet felt in my socks as they rested against my cream-colored carpet. It was one of those early spring days here in New England where you still need a sweatshirt outside, but the sun kisses your skin just right if you sit directly in its rays and the breeze slows just enough. My whole body felt comfortable and my mind was at peace.

I let myself rest in this moment of presence, which is always fleeting but becomes more common as we heal.

There was nothing out of the ordinary about Friday afternoon. And still, it was extraordinary, because presence and the bliss I describe above are not common. Rather, they’re a product of the healing and empowerment journey.

Healing and empowerment allow us to dissolve the layers covering our authenticity, which is who we really are beneath our conditioning and survival mechanisms. Authenticity is where presence and bliss become available to all of us.

If you’d like to learn how I got here, I teach my methodology and guide women through their own transformation over on Substack in my online book, The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook: 4 Steps to Trauma-Informed Holistic Healing + Empowerment for Adult Daughters of Dysfunctional Families.

Yesterday, I released Chapter 26: Awaken Your Inner Explorer – Be Brave.

In it, I share a personal story about where I’ve had to tap into bravery the most along my journey and the level of care I now bring into my relationships through a highly intentional use of boundaries.

The story gives you a peek inside a friendship I explored last year and how I used a multi-layer approach to boundaries to protect myself from unexpected dysfunctional dynamics.

You can read that story here or start reading The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook from the beginning here.

Wishing you a restful weekend.

Xo,

Danielle

Share The Restorative Lifestyle Method HANDBOOK

Chapter 26: Awaken Your Inner Explorer – Be Brave

Bravery is a decision available to all of us.

Danielle D'Onofrio

Exploration is like stepping into a dark room, fumbling to find the light switch while you trip over obstacles and your arm hair stands up because you don’t know who or what’s hiding in the corner. Where there are too many problematic personalities, I no longer attend — and haven’t in many years.

My husband sometimes likes to linger in conversation or play sports/games with the guys late into the evening on holidays. So, I bring my own car and leave when I’m ready. If I don’t have my own car and want to leave earlier than my husband, I’ll say my goodbyes and listen to a podcast while I wait for him in the family vehicle. Basically, I maintain a high degree of privacy, holding the details of my life and my family’s life very close to my heart and not sharing most things with anyone outside of my husband and sons. My closest family and friends get a little more insight into my life, but still not very much. Access is granted slowly, over time, only to people who have proven trustworthiness and emotional maturity. In healing, de-centering is the intentional process of assigning (demoting) people to the appropriate place in your life while bringing yourself back into proper focus. De-centering other people is a necessary part of the healing journey, particularly for women who struggle with codependency, which centers others.

Subscribe now

Centering yourself is the healed, empowered, emotionally mature way to live.

The healthiest, happiest people are the center of their own lives, and they connect authentically and interdependently with other people who are also the center of their own lives.

Is this a trigger or light-bulb moment for you?

If you find it triggering, you may be confusing centering yourself with self-centeredness.

But this is massively different.

Self-centered people have not actually centered themselves in their own lives. Instead, they demand to be the center of other people’s lives. See the difference?

Self-centered people are not healthy or pleasant to be around. They’re often the narcissistic, energy-vampire types, who are in fact strongly attracted to codependents, who happily center them.

A healthy, functional person is at the center of his or her own life, and understands other people are also at the center of their own lives. They have no tolerance for, and do not attract, self-centeredness.

If you grew up in a dysfunctional family system, you likely brought some degree of codependency with you into adulthood and therefore spend a good deal of energy on people pleasing; rescuing and fixing; and trying to earn love, respect, connection and safety from others.

You’ll know that you’re still operating codependently (centering others) if people have a certain degree of control over you. For example, you’ll fear their reactions and judgments; move in a way that manages their emotions; and make decisions based on what they approve of. (I know, because I’ve been there.)

Codependency is a massive strain on our mental, emotional and physical health; it’s often what drives a woman to her breaking point, when she realizes she’s built her entire life around other’s people needs and expectations.

Eventually, the weight of codependency becomes too much, and we have no choice but to make a change.

Healing is the process of bringing ourselves back into focus and rebuilding our lives on our own terms, which is what I teach in The Restorative Lifestyle Method: 4 Steps to Trauma-Informed Holistic Healing + Empowerment for Adult Daughters of Dysfunctional Families.

It’s time to become the main character of your life story.

Ask yourself: who needs to be decentered from your life so you can finally focus on you? But the community pressure, virtue signaling and fear mongering are intense.

Observing my community’s behavior in times like these reminds me of how few people think for themselves or have the courage to express opposing views. It never feels good to peer into the darkness when the curtain is finally pulled back. The idea that the Beckhams may actually be dysfunctional, entitled, or even crappy parents shatters a fabulous and romantic storyline so many of us have indulged in over the years. So the recent news of Brooklyn Peltz Beckham and his wife, Nicola, cutting ties with the family is big and controversial.

The Restorative Lifestyle Method HANDBOOK is a reader-supported publication. They’re going up against a juggernaut global brand image that has stood the test of time—until now.

None of us knows the true Beckham family dynamic. But many of us do know what it’s like to escape dysfunctional circumstances that only happen behind closed doors, and then face judgment, ridicule, and ostracization for choosing to set strong boundaries and heal our lives. Those of us who’ve been there—albeit not on a public stage—are far more likely to give Brooklyn and Nicola the benefit of the doubt.

No one chooses this path just because they feel like it. There’s far too much sacrifice involved for that to make sense.

So, here are four things to keep in mind before judging the children for cutting off their parents.

Even the most average person projects an intentional image, whether through how they behave in public or what they share on social media. The Beckhams have been doing this at a professional level for many years. Nobody knows what these people are like behind closed doors or the true nature of their family dynamics. We only see what they want us to see.

No one walks away from a family—immediate or in-law—that is loving, respectful, and genuinely feels good to be around. It goes against human nature. There is deep personal grief and community ridicule involved when someone cuts ties, so there must be significant circumstances to push someone to this level of boundary, especially with intense public exposure.

It is healthy, mature, and admirable for Brooklyn to choose his wife and his marriage. An enmeshed, dysfunctional family doesn’t typically allow the space necessary for adult children to create healthy independence. A proper, dedicated, loving husband creates that space, sometimes through distance.

It doesn’t matter if Brooklyn handles this perfectly or not. What matters is that he is standing up for himself and his wife. Fame and privilege are irrelevant when it comes to learning boundaries or navigating family dysfunction. Dysfunctional families do not teach their children healthy boundaries—even when they’re rich and famous—so he is most likely learning and practicing boundaries for the very first time.

So many young couples face challenges like this when they want space to create healthy, independent lives, but the family won’t allow it.

Couples facing enmeshment with dysfunctional families are forced to pull away out of survival. Many people instinctively side with the family, though, because stories of no contact or estrangement force them to question their own interpersonal behavior—and whether they might ever be held accountable in a similar way.

I think David and Victoria Beckham are likely being held accountable for the first time in their lives as it relates to their family, and to the discrepancies between reality and the image they project publicly. I’m sure it’s uncomfortable. Whether that discomfort comes from love for their son or attachment to their brand remains to be seen. Time will tell—and I’m sure we’ll hear about it.

If this story sounds similar to your own, check out my book here on Substack. She may meet an effective therapist or coach, or come across articles, podcasts, and social media accounts that describe her life experiences to a T.

Every bit of awareness, validation, and guidance helps dissolve the spell of childhood trauma and opens a gateway toward effective healing. No family is perfect, but even subtle patterns of boundary-crossing, role reversal, immature communication styles, and instability condition a child to abandon herself and operate in survival mode.

To survive dysfunctional family dynamics, the young girl absorbs life-altering levels of stress. She walks through her daily life shapeshifting, shrinking, and appeasing to avoid physically or emotionally threatening conflict. She works tirelessly to prove her worth through achievement and self-abandons to secure connection.

These survival efforts are generally effective in keeping life predictable in childhood, so she establishes a deeply rooted survival-based identity.

This primary layering of trauma and survival conditioning, which manifests as nervous system dysregulation, false belief programming, hypervigilance, codependency, safety-seeking and survival mechanisms, and emotional coping or escapism, sets in during childhood and follows the adult daughter throughout her life. Through this lens of trauma and survival, the young girl forms her distorted expectations of people and the world around her, as well as what she feels she must do to keep herself safe. The foundational separation from her authentic self is now intact, and her wounded subconscious occupies the driver’s seat of her life.

To transform her life as an adult, she’ll have to dismantle and rebuild this false foundation. Learn how in The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook.

The Secondary Layer: Independent Relationship Building

The secondary layer of abuse begins as the daughter enters her teen years and pursues her own independent relationships, both romantic and platonic. Though the dysfunctional family of origin is still the cause of her struggles in this layer, the connection is now indirect.

Now, poor life and relationship choices are often attributed to the teen girl herself. Her parents and other authority figures chastise her for getting involved with the wrong crowd, entangling herself with toxic friends and romantic partners, failing to apply herself, etc. However, she’s only mirroring her family life because that’s what she’s conditioned to do. She’s subconsciously recreating the relationships she has with her parents, namely, to reflect the dysfunction she’s used to.

So, the number of people who treat her poorly is multiplying, and her life is becoming more chaotic and dysfunctional.

In these years, when she is still so young, she has not yet awakened to her sovereignty or the fact that a healthier path is available to her. She’s yet to understand that no one is coming to save her, and even though she didn’t ask for her trauma and dysfunctional conditioning, she is responsible for overcoming it.

She wades in this layer for many years, maybe even longer than the childhood that conditioned her for it.

She repeats dysfunctional patterns in all her relationships; self-sabotages when things are going well; and suffers daily because it’s all she knows. There’s a chance she lives out her entire life in this dysfunctional reality full of suffering and struggle. In fact, many women do.

But some women eventually wake up because they’ve hit some form of rock bottom and just can’t take it anymore. Others eventually have children of their own, and the life-altering portal into motherhood thrusts them into consciousness. They realize they deserved far better growing up and will now give themselves the beautiful life they were meant for, if they can figure out how.

When even a spark of awareness reaches the conscious mind, there is no going back.

She knows too much now to pretend she’s blind to the dysfunction around her. Big changes are ahead.

The adult daughter’s first realization is that she wants to feel better. If she’s already a mother, she is determined to give her children a better childhood than she had. It’s newfound desires like these that help her see clearly, and now she has a harder time tolerating dysfunctional behavior from her family and the other people around her. She’s gaining awareness of the fact that she must escape the system and the toxic, disorienting fog that surrounds it. She must make major shifts in her life.

This is usually the first point of accountability for the dysfunctional family, because the young woman is finally ready to begin healing the enmeshment and create some healthy separation.

Accountability happens indirectly when the adult daughter eventually sets boundaries and the system is consequently deprived of the pathways typically used to exploit her. Sometimes, those boundaries look like low contact or no contact.

The adult daughter who seeks healing does not aim to punish or hold the parents accountable. Rather, she’s finally chosen herself, decided to improve her life, and, if she’s a mother, break the cycle of generational trauma for her own children.

But now, the third layer of abuse piles on.

The Third Layer: Family Rejection and Cultural Stigma

Even as an adult, the woman serves a role in her family system. Her role helps maintain the status quo, meet expectations, keep the “peace,” and protect the image. When she eventually chooses to heal and rebuild her life, she’ll have to start with the first boundaries she’s probably ever set. The family won’t like these boundaries because they threaten the status quo and public image. The more dysfunctional the system, the stronger the adult daughter’s boundaries will have to be, and the more intense the reaction will be from the family.

The third layer of abuse begins as the family system uses guilt, ostracization, and reputation damage to try to control her. She is mentally and emotionally attacked and, in many cases, completely pushed away from the people, places, and traditions that are familiar to her.

No contact becomes her only dignified option.

The guilting and ostracizing themselves are abusive and make it impossible for her to use healthy boundaries to maintain any kind of relationship with the family system. Sticking around means knowingly exposing herself to toxicity and abuse. She realizes she must walk away completely out of self-preservation if she has any chance of healing and transforming her life.

A vast majority of society either does not understand the implications of a dysfunctional family, or they themselves are in denial of their own dysfunctional childhood or parenting experiences. So, the adult daughter now faces intense cultural stigma when she separates from her family of origin.

Some wouldn’t consider this layer abusive, but it is indeed the third layer instilled by the dysfunctional family of origin and now compounded by society at large, which is uncomfortable with estrangement. Nobody wants to be held accountable or exposed for their own parenting or relationship failures, so they denounce any sign of it.

The adult daughter has no other choice if she wants to heal, but still, she is punished for that choice.

The Strength of a Cycle Breaker

The adult daughter who chooses boundaries and personal transformation clears more hurdles in her life than the average person would ever even encounter. She’s never considered herself a victim, but a fighter, because she’s never had the time or space to wallow in self-pity. She’s been surviving since the day she was born.

The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook

If you see yourself in this article and feel ready to move from survival into self-directed healing, my book, The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook, was written for you. When self-abandonment is our safety tactic, we suppress our own needs and emotions and instead fix, caretake and work tirelessly to please others to earn love and connection.

This collection of beliefs and behavior is often referred to as codependency, and it’s at the core of our guilt, stress and struggle. It’s also why many of us eventually reach a point of so much frustration, resentment and pain, that we end up cutting people out of our lives (I talk about this in Power Move #2 below) and making it our mission to learn more about boundaries, so we can move forward with healthier relationships and the space we need to create a life we love.

If this all sounds familiar to you, you’re probably here reading this guide because you feel DONE – done with toxic environments, abusive or emotionally immature people, one-sided relationships, and the way you feel when you’re constantly bypassing yourself to meet the needs and expectations of others.

Many of us eventually get to this point, where the pain of surviving the status quo surpasses the fear of taking a leap of faith and finally becoming the hero of our own story.

If you’re at that point, like I was 13 years ago, it means you’re ready for your transformation journey, and you’ve come to the right place.

Quick Introduction

Hey there, I’m Danielle D’Onofrio, holistic healing + empowerment coach for women, and author of The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook. I know what it’s like to grow up in a dysfunctional family and carry stubborn patterns like codependency into adulthood. I spent my teens and twenties, and even some of my thirties, constantly trying to earn love, worth and connection through achievement and by maintaining no personal boundaries; fawning and people pleasing to keep the peace and avoid criticism and judgment; and shapeshifting to fit what everyone else needed me to be to avoid abandonment. Ugh! It’s exhausting just writing about it. But you know, that’s not my life anymore. Far from it.

Over the last decade, I’ve intentionally built a life that’s peaceful, happy, abundant, and completely my own. The journey has been mind-blowing in the best and most surprising ways. Even after 10+ years of this work, I’m still fascinated and enamored by how healing and transformation actually unfold and what it truly takes to will the process forward – so much so that I will no doubt spend the rest of my life passing on my discoveries to other women through my writing and coaching.

Over the last 5 years I’ve been carefully curating my experience, stories, and real-life expertise into a holistic healing + empowerment roadmap for women with dysfunctional family trauma. The lifestyle approach in this method makes it all second nature in a timely and efficient way, so you become UNSTOPPABLE and UNAPOLOGETIC in creating a happy, peaceful, and abundant life – sooner rather than later.

Yes, the journey lasts a lifetime, but you can make substantial changes and feel dramatically better in no time when you have the guidance and support you need.

In the meantime, here’s a little jumpstart to get your mind shifting in the right direction when it comes to boundaries.

BEWARE – these five power moves will have you thinking much differently about your current relationships and what needs to happen to transition from suffering and struggling for false safety TO truly thriving as a healed and empowered woman.

Boundaries: 5 Power Moves to Break Free from Guilt + Awaken Your Personal Power

1. Assume the people in your life will never change.

I’m embarrassed to admit how long it took me to realize that I can’t change other people. Of course, I understood the concept intellectually, but I didn’t truly accept it and integrate it into my psyche until my fruitless people-fixing efforts and endless waiting games became so exhausting and painful that continuing along that path felt downright foolish.

Sure, some people do change; but the most dysfunctional ones usually don’t, and when they do, it’s on their own timeline and comes from motivational forces within themselves that have nothing to do with you.

You must assume that your parents, in-laws, siblings, relatives, spouse, and friends will never change – that they will continue to impact your life exactly as they are now until they come up against firm boundaries set by you. (Note: Your boundaries won’t change them either but rather will determine what you tolerate and how you respond.)

Let all other people be who and how they are. Move on with your life with no expectation of others and all the expectation in the world of yourself.

Watch the video commentary for Power Move #1

2. Walking Away Is a Boundary

The urge to walk away or cut someone out of your life is a signal you must pay close attention to. It’s not a frivolous urge but rather one that comes from a deep intuitive knowing that you need time and distance to better care for yourself.

Severing ties, especially with family members, may be frowned upon culturally, but it only shows up as the best path forward when someone is physically, mentally, or emotionally destructive to your life and does not have the emotional maturity to accept or respect boundaries. They often become even more problematic when you try to set a boundary, which means you are not in your personal power when in physical or energetic proximity to them. In cases like this, walking away is 100% a power move; it’s what’s necessary to reclaim your life and release the pent-up, holistically unhealthy resentment this type of relationship dynamic causes.

I’ve cut ties with many people from my past. For a long time, I felt shame about this part of my life, and grief still shows up occasionally. But walking away was necessary, and I can confidently say I would not have transformed my life so completely without the space I created with those strong boundary decisions.

The likelihood you will need to walk away and go “no contact” is higher than the average woman, because it’s dysfunctional, emotionally immature people who shape dysfunctional families and traumatic childhoods. You probably have some people in your life with narcissistic traits, extreme codependency, untreated substance abuse issues, and any number of additional problematic personality characteristics. People with this level of dysfunction can become truly unbearable and toxic for someone trying to heal and improve her life.

I always recommend attempting lower tier boundaries first (learn more in The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook) to see if you can maintain some degree of relationship (if that’s what you want), but if someone shows they can’t respect boundaries, the healed and empowered woman has no other choice but to move on.

Watch the video commentary for Power Move #2

3. Treat your life like an exclusive club.

Treating your life like an exclusive club may seem radical, but it’s how the healed and empowered woman honors her innate worth and creates a peaceful life full of happiness and abundance. She has a purposeful mission, high standards and a strong set of values her inner circle must align with. Period. No apologies.

The truth is, not everyone you’re related to or that you encounter along the way is meant to become a participating member of your life.

People should stay in your acquaintance bucket until they earn your trust over time and demonstrate they have the awareness and emotional capacity to respect your boundaries and add something valuable to your life. If someone can’t manage their personal responsibility to respect boundaries and give mutually in relationship with you, they get demoted or blocked completely.

It takes more than just “anyone” to have an enjoyable, meaningful relationship. Quality over quantity, always. Don’t collect friends, curate them.

The same goes for family. Just because someone defaults into your life through blood or marriage, doesn’t mean they get access to you. Everyone earns access, and no one gets grandfathered in.

Remember, for the woman who hasn’t fully healed her codependency, this power move may seem harsh. But the healed and empowered woman doesn’t even think twice about exclusivity; it’s just how she operates.

Watch the video commentary for Power Move #3

4. Activate Your Intuition

The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook is an intuitive approach to healing and empowerment, because as a woman, your intuition is your single greatest guide. If you just listen for your innate, internal wisdom and decide to trust it, you will transform your life and enter complete creative control of your outcomes.

Activating your intuition simply means turning your attention to it and heeding its guidance and warnings. It’s already there, built into your very being from conception. It’s been speaking to you all along, but often, our dysfunctional fears, coping mechanisms, and survival tactics block our willingness to listen to what we know is right and healthy for us. For example, your fear of abandonment may make it seem impossible to say no or set boundaries with someone, even though they’re negatively impacting your life.

Bottom line - nothing improves until you start trusting yourself. Nothing. So, take some time to connect with your inner knowing, your gut feelings, your divine guidance. Start taking intentional moments to notice how you feel around different people and in different environments. Meditate on what those feelings might mean for you. Journaling is a great place to start. Ask yourself what you need in your relationships, start writing and get curious about what shows up.

Watch the video commentary for Power Move #4

5. Aim for Total Peace — Don’t Fear It

If there’s any amount of drama still left in your life, your boundaries aren’t strong enough yet.

Use that statement as a litmus test for how you’re doing on boundaries. There will be areas for improvement for a while as you build confidence in setting boundaries and become more in touch with your self-worth. Keep in mind: your life will eventually become very peaceful and free.

At first, the peace and freedom will feel weird, foreign—maybe even boring. You may feel isolated and lonely, and question if you’ve done something wrong. I certainly got to that point. But this is an important threshold in your life, because with that peace, space, and freedom, you now get to start intentionally building a life that you love, without the dysfunction, chaos, drama, and complications from people and relationships that aren’t meant for you.

Despite feeling strange and new, this is an exciting stage of the journey, and everyone gets here on different timelines. This is where Pillars II through IV of The Restorative Lifestyle Method Handbook — II.
