Greetings from Somerset!

I’ve been umming and ahh-ing about what to write this month. I only ever want to take up space in your inbox if and when I have something genuinely meaningful to share with you.

If you remember my last update, I was feeling incredibly burnt out (if I’m honest, I still am), trying to survive the chickenpox trenches, and studying courses on writer’s block to find my way back to the page. Well, things got a little more confusing for my brain after that!

But we have officially hit August, which means a massive milestone is looming: we are now mere weeks away from my little one starting school in September. We are currently navigating the school uniform shopping, shoe fittings, and emotional prep (mostly on my part). I can’t quite believe how quickly the time has flown.

On top of that emotional milestone, we are currently experiencing what I like to call a never-ending heatwave, which is playing absolute havoc with my body. My fingers and feet swell in the heat no matter what advice I follow, making walking and writing pretty difficult. Between that and the constant headaches, my word counts have been pretty low for almost a month now. I have this burning desire to write and create, but my body just wants to do absolutely nothing because I am tired, uncomfortable, and grumpy!

So, naturally, it felt like the perfect time to completely scrap the entirety of Book 4.

Yes, all 50,000 words of it.

After my long stint of burnout, I realised I was pushing against a brick wall because the story simply wasn’t going in the right direction. It lacked the spark my characters deserved. So, taking a deep breath, I hit delete and started again from scratch.

It was terrifying, but also, it was the most liberating thing I could have done. The new version is already shaping up to be so much better, and the joy of writing has officially returned. We are already 9 chapters into the revised story, and I know it’s going to be much better for it.

Recent Events

Back in June, I was invited to be an attending author at a small, intimate event in Burford called Fizz, Fiction and Gelato. It was super exciting but quickly became very scary; as someone who does not like to do things alone, I couldn’t find anyone to come with me. I texted my mum in a bit of a panic, and she told me to put my big girl pants on and just go. So, go I did!

It was a wonderful, if extremely overwhelming, evening. I met some amazing people, however the social anxiety got to me so I didn’t mingle as much as I had hoped to. Despite that, it was a lovely night of books, talks, cocktails and a wonderful location. And the Gelato was insanely good. If you’re ever in Burford, I recommend stopping by The Burford Pantry and treating yourself.

And last weekend, I attended The Book Party. Initially, I was only going to go as a reader with my local book club. But then I saw the author tickets, and after people kept telling me that I should get myself out there more, I took the plunge and hit buy.

It was definitely a learning experience! Behind the scenes, it felt a little disorganised at times, including a last-minute mishap with the Waterstones sellers, which meant we ended up having to sell and handle our own books on the fly. But the organisers were genuinely so apologetic, stepped up, and kept checking in on us throughout the night, which I really appreciated.

I’ll admit, I didn’t mingle half as much as I should have (my social battery definitely had its limits!), and I felt a bit out of my depth compared to fellow indie author Chloe L Blyth, who was absolute goals. She mingled like a boss and sold out of her book!

That said, I had a lovely time. I met some fantastic authors, bought my mum a psychological thriller, got to chat with a few wonderful readers, and chatted the evening away with my book club before heading off before the full disco kicked off. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone was scary, but I’m so glad I went.

Now, onto the writing updates! There isn’t much to update you all on but here’s where I am at right now.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: I am currently waiting on feedback from my critique partner. I have a few chapters back already, but I'm waiting on the remaining 21. I'm hopeful I'll have it all soon so I can start the heavy lifting of editing. As long as I get it back shortly, our publishing timeline shouldn't change! I may also start a call for ARC readers soon too, even if it’s the version before this last round of edits.

• Book Three: Round One edits are officially underway based on my alpha feedback. I'm focusing on small rewrites and scene tightening, and we have successfully polished 11 out of 31 chapters so far.

• Book Four: Writing is happening, albeit slowly. Never have I prayed for autumn to come so fast, as then hopefully, once the weather cools down and my house stops hovering at a constant 32°C, I’ll be able to write more than 300 words a day!

Other Projects
If you saw my Instagram post a while ago, you know I am still hoping to continue writing once The Royals of Osterdel series is complete (though I may still take a break first, I haven’t quite decided).

The creative brain tries to never stop, so I have a few exciting ideas brewing:

• A no-spice fantasy idea (currently split into two books, but I think it might just compress into one standalone).

• A spicy standalone set in an academic setting, which is already fully outlined.

• A standalone inspired by Dragon Age: Inquisition.

• A brand-new spark of an idea inspired by a mix of House of the Dragon x Veil of Shadows. No clue where that one is going yet, but I do love a dragon story!

I have also found myself drawn back to a certain project that I previously wrote, scrapped, came back to, and scrapped again. Those who have followed me for a while will know exactly which one I mean! The initial idea just wouldn’t leave me alone. I think it is going to become a series of short stories—so don’t get your hopes up just yet—but I do plan to write the first three novellas soon.

What I am Reading

Currently, I am reading A Pocket of Lies by R. A. Sandpiper and really enjoying it so far. It's a nice relief because I actually had to DNF a couple of books in July simply due to not feeling them. It could have been the oppressive heat, or it could just be my usual mood-reader tendencies showing up!

• I have also officially paid deposits for TWO other UK events next year—one in June 2027 and one in September 2027. I’m also contemplating applying for a spot in November. If any more get locked in, I will let you know as soon as I can!

Greetings from Somerset!

Life has been a bit of a whirlwind over the last two months. If I’m honest, the stress has been heavy, and navigating the “work-from-home-parent” life while nursing a child through chickenpox was far more of a challenge than I expected! But amongst the heavy days, there have been some truly wonderful bright spots.

Pascify was my first event, and I was incredibly nervous. My goal was modest: I wanted to sell just one book. I ended up selling 39! To the person who came up and said an ARC reader sent them to find me—thank you. You absolutely made this indie author’s day.

Now, you might not be aware but, I’ve had a bit of a journey with the exclusive cover for The Second Lightbringer. After six months of back-and-forth with the designer, I’d almost resigned myself to it just being “fine.” However, after some encouragement at Pascify, I ordered a single proof.

It arrived this week, and you know what? It’s actually not as terrible as I thought! While it isn’t Tessa (who is perfect in every way), Aster is her own person, and seeing the cover in the flesh helped me see it in its own light. Should I do a poll to see what you think? Let me know!

(Note: No current plans for a Kickstarter, but I may open a pre-order on the website soon.)

In addition to all of the above, I’ll be candid—I am still navigating a long period of burnout. Life feels quite heavy personally as I try to balance being a writer, parent, and wife, all while getting my little one ready to start school. Instead of pushing against a brick wall, I’m leaning into learning.

I’ve been rewatching lectures from The Self Publishing Show Live 2023, Brandon Sanderson’s 2025 lectures, and taking a course on writer’s block to help find my way back to the page. It’s about small steps and finding control where I can.

✍️ On The Desk Writing Progress Update ✍️

Now, onto the writing updates! There isn’t much to update you all on but here’s where I am at right now.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: My editing timeline has changed due to personal circumstances but we are still on track for a February 2027 release (so far!). I am hoping to have feedback by July and then we can start edits and sending out ARCs.

• Book Three: Alpha reader is done! I’m looking at the schedule to see when I can dive into the first round of revisions for Jaren’s story. I’m already planning to commission the cover for the end of the year.

• Book Four: Elinor and Bellamy seem to have switched up positions and now Elinor is making her scenes very hard to write, but I am still aiming for around 400 words each writing session. But I have to admit, sometimes it’s more like 200. However, there is a semi-spicy scene coming up that I’m actually quite excited to write!

Project Blade
I’m trying to focus on one project at a time to manage the burnout, though I’m still listening to what my muse needs. For now, it’s all about what is manageable.

What I am Reading

Currently I am reading an ARC of Her Hidden Fire by Clíodhna O’Sullivan. I am enjoying it so far but only just started so cannot tell you more about that yet. On the go I also have A Scar In The Bone by Sophie Jordan, this is my give a DNF another go prompt for a challenge I am doing with the book club. It’s still not gripping me but I am enjoying it more this time around. The mood reader in me is satisfied, for now.

Hello, hello!

Springtime is here and honestly, I am here for the lighter days, evenings, and (hopefully) better weather. I am officially done with the cold and rain now, so if the clouds could take a short holiday, that would be wonderful.

Burnout is still lingering in the background, and I finally made the decision to visit the pharmacy because I have been ill since the middle of January. Turns out whatever virus I had mutated into full blown sinusitis and so I ended up on antibiotics, along with a four year old who was throwing up. My husband had a fun weekend haha.

However, I have managed to write more of Book Four, which is surprising me daily. I recently found a Pinterest image with ten random writing prompts and decided to try a few as low-pressure creative exercises. No expectations. No plotting. Just words on a page to flex the muscle again. Will it cure the burnout? Jury’s still out. But it feels like a step.

I spoke to an author friend recently who shared they hit burnout in late 2024 and didn’t write a single word for months. That really put things into perspective for me. I’ve been afraid of stepping too far back in case momentum disappears completely. Perhaps this season is more about steady rebuilding than sprinting.

In between writing attempts, my book-buying habit has unfortunately (or fortunately?) been thriving. Apparently retail therapy sometimes includes fantasy hardbacks. I also donated three bags of clothes to charity back in January and fully intend to declutter more soon. There’s something about less mess that makes my brain breathe a little easier.

During the quieter days I’ve also been watching Brandon Sanderson’s 2025 lecture series on YouTube. If I can’t always produce new words, I can at least sharpen the tools. Relearning the how of storytelling feels like it might gently nudge the what back into place.

But enough of my rambling, because I have something exciting to share with you today.

What I am Reading

I recently finished Jenna Wolfhart’s Falling for Fables series. These have been a lovely break from the heavy fantasy with their low stakes tasks and fun mixed in with the romance. Next on the ebook front are some ARC’s the publishers on Netgalley have kindly approved me for; A Kiss of Hammer and Flame by Amy de la Force is up first followed by The Thorn Queen by Sasha Peyton Smith and I am so excited for them.

In addition, I’m listening to Season of Storms, a witcher book, on my office days, and still plodding along with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. With my illness it’s been a bit hard to focus on much, but we are slowly getting back to normal.

Hello, hello — and welcome to 2026!

I hope you had a wonderful holiday season, however you chose to celebrate.

Our Christmas was a very quiet one. I came down with tonsillitis, my husband had a cold, and our daughter, blissfully unaffected, had the best day of her life after Santa delivered everything on her list. Today is actually her birthday, so we’ll be celebrating once she’s home from nursery in a couple of hours… and then we’ll do it all over again on Friday for mine!

Over the past month, there have been a lot of “make 2026 better’ posts floating around social media, and quite a few of them landed right in the middle of this writer’s burnout. They made me stop and reassess how I’ve been approaching creativity. I’ve turned on screen-time limits to curb the mindless scrolling, started journalling in a way that actually works for me (and helps my writing), and — perhaps most importantly — accepted that I don’t need to be constantly creating.

Creativity is a flow state, and I haven’t truly been in one for a long time. So if 2025 was the Year of the Snake, I’m shedding impostor syndrome and letting myself move forward at my own pace instead of at an impossible standard I set for myself when no one else is asking me to.

Now, onto the writing updates! There isn’t much to update you all on but here’s where I am at right now.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: The latest round of edits is complete, and the manuscript has gone off to another critique partner for one final read-through before I begin looking for beta readers. I’m aiming to have feedback back by March, though there’s no real rush. Publication is likely looking at 2027.

• Book Three: My alpha reader has started digging in, and I’m really looking forward to her feedback so I can strengthen the story. The boys have always made me feel like their arcs aren’t quite as strong as Tessa and Aster’s — though that may just be my own self-doubt talking.

• Book Four: I probably should be taking a break, but the words flowed over the holidays and I’m already four chapters (around 11k) in. Bellamy isn’t being especially cooperative yet, but the female lead? She’s an absolute joy to write.

Project Blade
The outlining is complete, and I finally have a clear idea of where this story is going. I suspect I’ll flit between drafting Book Four of Osterdel and this project throughout the year, depending on where my creativity takes me.

Project Kerradin
This one is being shelved again, and likely for good. It never quite found its footing, though it taught me a lot along the way. I may reuse the character names and portraits in a future project. Not every story needs to see the light of day, and that’s okay.

New Idea, Maybe?

I’ve started a new document in Google Docs where I’m dumping anything and everything that comes to me. Scene ideas, character names, settings, little bits of worldbuilding, and tropes I know I love. I’ve also been jotting down inspiration pulled from the art I’ve been consuming over the last six weeks. There’s no plan for it yet and no pressure to make it into anything. It’s just somewhere for ideas to land instead of rattling around in my head.

What I am Reading

This year, I’m focusing on reading more than I buy. My goal is to make a proper dent in my Kindle backlog, starting with a couple of ARCs. A friend has also insisted that I must read Red Rising, so that’s firmly on the TBR if I can fit everything in.

I’m also reading one chapter of Atomic Habits a day as part of my 75 Soft challenge. Slow and steady seems to be the theme for 2026.

Hello, hello!

Somehow, we’ve made it to the end of another year, and I don’t know about you, but it feels like 2024 and 2025 blurred together in the wildest, most chaotic way. I blinked, and suddenly we’re in Christmas lights, thick socks, and “how is it almost January?” territory. Although, unlike some people, I actually love January as I get to celebrate my daughter and I’s birthdays and be the introvert I naturally am.

2025 has been… a lot. Wonderful in many ways, overwhelming in others. Between releasing The Last Dragonknight, packing endless parcels, returning to a full time job, and saying yes to more than my brain had energy for, I hit a point where burnout wasn’t just tapping on the door — it moved in, put its feet up, and asked what snacks I had.

I won’t pretend it’s been easy. Life overwhelm has absolutely affected my creativity, and I’m learning (slowly, stubbornly) that rest isn’t a luxury — it’s essential. I thought the six weeks I took at the beginning of the year and having weekends off was enough. But it just wasn’t.

My hope for the holiday season is to give myself the space to breathe a little, refill the creative well, and find that spark again. If you’re feeling the same: I see you. We’re going to get through it, gently.

Despite the burnout, there is so much I’m excited for next year:

🖤 Book 3 — deep into the drafting and refining process
🖤 And hopefully… if rest does its magic… Book 4’s first draft will make an appearance in 2026 🤞

I can’t wait to share more about Tessa’s siblings, Tiarnaan, and everything coming next. There’s a big gap on the map that will be filled by the time book 4 comes around.

✍️ On The Desk Writing Progress Update ✍️

Now, onto the writing updates!

I know I am a slow writer but I do work a little everyday, as well working full time and parenting a feral (adorable) toddler. Somehow between all of this I have also got Christmas and my daughters birthday party sorted. But I digress.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: I have received edits back and these will be starting soon! I hope to have these edits done by the end of the month / early December and then it’ll be off to an author friend for a final read through. I’ve also commissioned an artist to do portraits of Aster and Corbin! If all goes well I may have some goodies at PaSciFy Con.

• Book Three: Draft one is complete! Honestly cannot believe I am typing those words. Jaren’s story has not been easy, with two failed attempts — one of which was 65k words long — I am happy with this draft. Although. did cut out a big part which I loved so I might see if my critique partners have any ideas on how to bring that back in.

Project Blade
We’re nearing the end of the outlining stage! I’ve locked in 30 chapters so far, and I expect another 10–15 before calling the outline complete. The story is shaping up beautifully, and at this point, I’m 99.9% sure it will be a standalone novel. I can’t wait for you to meet this new cast of characters — they’ve already stolen my heart.

Project Kerradin
Long-time readers might be surprised to see this one reappear in my desk notes. Truthfully, I’ve been wrestling with some self-doubt and imposter syndrome lately, much of it tied to a comment from an old writing friend about the first novella in this series. That single moment of doubt made me shelve the entire project — all 5 novellas and 4 novels.

After a lot of reflection, I’ve decided it’s time to start fresh. The Kerradin and The Sorceress novella will be completely rewritten from the ground up. The previous version is no longer available, and I’m reimagining the world, the characters, and their journeys. My goal is to share this novella, along with the four other origin stories, with you by late 2027, and then get to work on combining the novels into two books rather than four. I hope you’ll be here through every creative twist and turn.

What I am Reading

ARCtober is officially over and I have read some fun books. The latest being an ARC of A War of Wyverns. Just as incredible ad the first book, loved every minute and I may have even cried a bit at this one. Next up is the Earth and Shadows Duology by Gemma Preston. Super excited to dive into this series.

Anyone else feel like August, and September, have flown by? I swear we were celebrating release month only yesterday and now here we are another month down the line. Time definitely moves differently when all systems are a go!

✍️ On The Desk Writing Progress Update ✍️

Now, onto the writing updates!

I know you’re all wondering—what is next? Well, I have a few things that I am currently working on and I think you’ll like them all (at least I hope you will).

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: The manuscript is officially with my editor and due back to me at the end of October. November will be spent editing before handing it off to an author friend for one more pass-through. Then we can start revealing all the goods — titles, covers, blurb, character art, etc.

• Book Three: 24 chapters in and making good progress! I suspect this will be ready for my critique partners around the end of the year. 2026 will be dedicated to editing this book. Did I mention it’s about our boy Jaren? 👀

Project Blade
Okay, I may have gone off the rails here. But plotting is now back on track (I think!). I commissioned some character art, and I have a scene inspired by John Michael Howell’s song The Wind (listen to that here if you haven’t). Plus I binged Alchemy of Souls on Netflix in a week — and let’s just say it gave me the hyperfixation I needed to shift the plot forward. We now have a fantasy academy story brewing and I’m very excited about it. The first ACT is plotted and I have to say it’s shaping up to be a fun story (even if that’s just fun for me).

Other Stories
And because my brain never stops… there are a couple of other stories simmering away. One already has 10,000 words drafted, though I paused it to work on Jaren’s book. They’ll definitely be coming back at some point… I just don’t know when yet.

Sadly I did have to turn down a really awesome project because with working full time, and trying to write these current projects, I didn’t feel I had the resources to dedicate to it. Does that mean the story will disappear? No. Actually I think I will still write it but possibly not for a few years. It’s always good to have a story on the back burner sometimes!

What I am Reading

Well this year has been great for reading. I just finished two ARCs - The Second Death of Locke and Silver & Smoke - both 5 stars. Absolutely loved them. I’ll be diving into Horn in my Side and The Outlaw Witch of Sherwood [thank you to TheNerdFam for an ARC of this] next. Because I am super behind on my ARC reading. I think 2026 might be the year I become a bit more reserved with my requests!

Hello, hello!

It feels like I’ve been living three lives lately. I’ve got my new job where I juggle woking in an office, working from home and working while parenting. A challenge and a learning curve! But one that had been so worth it.

The summer heat has really got me down and had thoroughly kicked my arse, most days I end up in a puddle in front of a fan. Bring on the cooler weather. I love the sun as much as the next person but honestly, I need it to be between 18-22 degrees as my sweet spot. Anything over and I melt!

If you’ve been watching my updates over in Instagram you’ll know my writing had been super up and down, one minute I’m writing 800 words and the next I only manage 200 but we are riding the wave and trying to get book 3 complete.

Then there’s the kickstarter fulfilment! Getting all the kickstarter editions packaged and shipped has been a lot of work but I can’t wait for backers to have those editions in their hands. Tessa’s heart pounded in sync with the staccato beat of her boots striking the smooth mahogany floor. As the queen’s adopted daughter and trusted spymaster, Tessa held onto secrets and carried out assassinations with ease. She was the only one who could get away with disturbing Prince Jaren in his private chambers.

The youngest of Queen Alyssia's children, Jaren constantly pushed the limits and danced dangerously close to the edge. Despite his reckless behaviour, he always seemed to evade severe consequences due to his royal status. But now, at twenty-one years old, even that privilege couldn’t save him from Tessa's interruption.

Turning the corner, Tessa halted her march as her eyes fell on three servants huddled around the prince’s door. Their ears pressed up against it as they shared whispered giggles. Tessa rolled her eyes. Now I have to deal with this rabble too. A feminine moan interrupted her thoughts from behind the prince’s door.

Perfect. Prince Jaren was not alone. That’s why Morley wanted me to go. Jaren is going to be livid when I burst in there.

Tessa stepped forward and cleared her throat. “Don’t you three have things to do?”

The huddled women jumped at the sound of her voice. They turned to face her, dipping their heads in acknowledgement, their eyes never leaving the floor. Another moan sounded from inside and Tessa felt the nausea rise again.

“Aye, Lady Tessa,” the first one, a brunette with her hair tied back in a bun, said. “We will be on our way.”

She held up a hand, stopping them from leaving. “How long has this been going on?”

“Since before first light, ma’am.”

Tessa nodded. “And do you know who is with the prince?”

The three women looked between each other. They knew, and they weren’t going to admit it. Obviously another servant. Tessa rolled her eyes. It better not be who I think it is.

“I’m not sure we should say, ma’am.”

Tessa nodded. “I respect your loyalty to the servants. However, if this… situation happens again and you refuse to tell me, I shall not be so lenient.” She fingered the dagger strapped to her side and smiled. The women hurried away before she could toy with them further.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: The cover has been commissioned! I am excited to get the ball rolling with this next book. Aster’s story is a very special one to my heart. Feedback has been implemented and it is now in he hands of my editor. Once it comes back it will go through one more round of beta reading before I deem it READY…

• Book Three: We officially have 17 chapters drafted with another 10 or so to go. I am very excited to get this first draft done and then I can send it off to my Alpha reader. Then it will be onto a NEW project for the drafting cave.

Project Blade
I have been super struggling with this idea but slowly I will wrench my MMC’s story from his grip. He might be reluctant to tell me right now but we will get there soon. Fun fact: This might turn into an academy story and I am very excited.

Other Stories
There’s a couple I want to get too but I think I need to be a bit more realistic with my goals. The stories will come, but I only have a set amount of time to do allocate to writing. I’ll keep you updated as I go, as always.

🖋 Behind the Book:

I wrote The Last Dragonknight because I’ve always loved arranged marriage stories, but I wanted to twist it — throw in an assassin, a secret identity, and dragon clan politics where nothing is quite what it seems.

The idea actually came to me after I purchased the special edition cover. It was on sale and I grabbed it on a whim. Then, low and behold, Tessa started to creep out from her hiding place and was like “hey, I have this story I want you to tell”. One brainstorm session with my writing pal Lyndsey and boom, we had an entire story to tell. You can actually thank her for the additional stories too. She wanted to know more about certain characters and I couldn’t resist.

• Book Two: Feedback has been completed and I am just waiting for my editor to be free so she can start working on it!

• Book Three: We are 14 chapters into this one and so far I am really enjoying the way this attempt at the story is shaping out. Did you know this is the THIRD time I have changed and rewritten this story? Jaren has been a very hard man to pin down.

Project Blade
I’ve been focusing a lot on worldbuilding for this one. Our FMC’s name has changed three times and I have been inspired by K-Pop demon hunters and Legacies to add in a few extra little bits. I write down whatever comes to me but I think this will end up being a standalone and I am very excited for you all to meet my MMC in this one. I fear he has stolen my heart and may impale yours.

Other Stories
I am terrified about the upcoming secret project. I’ve no idea if I will be able to pull off the idea that I have for it and honestly, I’m tempted to not do it and remove the pressure from myself. But, until I start writing the actual story I won’t know if I will have the time to meet requirements by the deadline. Maybe I will, maybe I won’t and you know what? That is okay. While I would love this opportunity, if it’s not for me this time around, that is also fine. I’ll keep you updated.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

The last time I sent a newsletter, there was a week left on The Last Dragonknight Kickstarter—and now here we are, 3.5 months later! So much has happened, and I wanted to pop into your inbox to give you a long-overdue update.

Kickstarter Recap + Fulfilment Updates

First off, THANK YOU. The Kickstarter didn’t just fund—it soared, surpassing my wildest expectations. Your support means everything, and I’m still pinching myself that we made this book happen together.

Here’s where things stand now:

• Digital rewards have been sent!

• I’m currently waiting on the final proofs for both the hardcover and paperback versions. Once those are approved, I’ll place the big order and get them into your hands as soon as possible.

• All swag items are ready and waiting!

You might even see a giveaway popping up on Instagram or TikTok soon for one of the not-quite-perfect proof copies—it's a little flawed on the outside, but the story inside is exactly the same.

Since the Kickstarter wrapped, life has been a lot.

We all came down with a round (or three) of illnesses that knocked us out for weeks, and to top it off—I left my day job. 😅 I’ve got a two-week breather before starting a new full-time role at the end of June, and I’m trying to make the most of this window to rest, reset, and write. Because I don’t think I will have as much free time as I do now once I start at the new place. It will be 5 days a week instead of 4, BUT after training I will get to work from home so I think the next three months will be a figuring it out sort of vibe until I can sort a schedule again.

✍️ On The Desk Writing Progress Update ✍️

Now, onto the writing updates!

A lot has changed with my writing plans over this past year. I started January with the hopes of writing two completely different novels to what I have been working on this year and I expect further changes down the line as I choose what project needs to take priority. It’s all for good though! So, here’s what’s been going on behind the scenes:

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: I am diving straight into feedback! I got the manuscript back from my critique partner and have looked through 9 chapters already, so these next two weeks I will plan to edit as much as I can to save me time and stress when I go back to work.

• Book Three: I’ve officially started drafting Book Three of the Royals of Osterdel. Jaren’s story is finally beginning to fall into place again after hitting pause earlier this year. I am already 8 chapters into the draft and hopefully this will be a better story than the last one!

Project Blade
So… Last news letter I told you I scrapped 32,000 words and I had plotted 6 new chapters. Yeah, they went out the window too. However, I have this new idea that I am really excited about and looking forward to launching into. So far I have our main characters, a random but fun scene in a library, and theres a secret chamber under the main location where our MMC is locked up. I know this will be an amazing story if I can figure out the plot - but I am having a hell of a lot of fun plotting out all the lore. I may end up like Hazel McBride and have 100 pages of worldbuilding before I word of this gets written and I am here for it.

Project Ash
I had been writing this one, but I shelved in in favor of getting Jaren’s story on the page first. Everything already written is staying (so far) I’ve simply hit the pause button to make sure that I can focus on the next story first. I think you guys will love this one and I want to make sure I give it all my attention when I get back to writing it.

Other Stories
As soon as the draft for Jaren’s story is done I will be diving into a secret project. This is the one with a deadline so I’ll need to get on it asap. The outline is tentatively done and I am excited but it’s a question of whether I can execute the story correctly and within the guidelines that have been set. It will be a challenge! And if it doesn’t work out then I will have a new story for you guys anyway.

What I am Reading

Well this year has been great for reading. I have 23 ARCs that need to be read so no doubt ARCtober will be back in action, however this month I am aiming to read ym ARC of Forbidden Alchemy by Stacey McEwan and then dive into The Elements of Cadence series by Rebecca Ross.

Hello, hello!

Well, what a difference a month can make… I was on such a high last time I sent a writing update and since then I have done a complete 180.

I’ll be honest—life has been a bit stressful coming in all sides from changing my daughters nursery, interviewing for new jobs, and making some big changes in my writing.

After a lot of reflection, I made the tough (but ultimately right) decision to scrap my 32,000-word manuscript along with the original ideas for that book. It wasn’t quite working the way I wanted, so I’m re-outlining from scratch. In the meantime, I’m diving into a completely different project, which has been a refreshing change of pace!

On a fun note, at the end of the month, I’ll be heading to FFB (Fiction, Fans & Ballgowns)! 🎉 While I didn’t get accepted as an attending author this time, I’ll be going as a reader, and I’m so excited to see everyone during the signing! If you’re attending, come say hi! I’m also making a weekend of it and visiting my writing pal Lyndsey—we’ve got big plans for a cozy writing retreat together! ✍️✨

I am writing again! Which is a relief to my stressed out brain. For a while there I thought the muse might’ve been gone permanently.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: Still in the hands of my critique partner, we’ve had a chat and hopefully they will be able to get stuck into this soon. If no progress has been made by the end of March I will be on the hunt for a new one!

• The Last Dragonknight: We are 11 chapters into editing. With some of the life changes happening I will have a bit more time to edit and draft the bonus content in March & April.

• Book Three: Might be scrapping this story and starting again from scratch, this will be worked out on my writing retreat weekend.

Project Blade
Remember I said I scrapped my 32,000 word manuscript? Yeah, it was for this idea. I didn’t like where we were going so that’s in the bin and we are starting again. I already have a playlist put together and outlined 6 chapters. I am more excited about this idea now and I think it will be much better for it.

Project IC
Recently my notes for this one jumped out at me. I think it wants me to take a look and try and outline something coherent, so if and when time allows I will be doing this. Hopefully if that happens then I might actually have a better project name for it.

Other Stories
I started drafting something new, which is getting dubbed Project Ash, but I also now have a deadline for a project (not till 2027) which will need to start getting drafted soon as well so that might be the next project I start. To hopefully give me enough time to draft, edit and polish before the big reveal.

Looks like I might be going back to the drawing board on what my plans were for this year and update my bingo card. We shall see. Maybe I can draft 3 books this year?

What I am Reading

I managed to read 5 books in February and I am aiming for 6 in March. Hopefully I’ll get to finish the Fate and Flame series as well as a couple of ARCs I am super excited about.

Hello, hello!

We are gearing up for a (hopefully) special year.

I’ve got three potential stories to draft, one to edit and one to release.

Being a writer feels like it is engrained as a part of me and sometimes I get really disheartened that I don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to it due to life commitments. I work full time, I have a small child to look after, a husband and friends to spend time with, hobbies I want to pursue as well as writing the stories that keep coming to me.

So, I really hope this year can be a positive one. With The Last Dragonknight releasing, a few first drafts getting done and then the edits for book two in the Osterdel series, once my critique partners have finished their read throughs. I am hopeful I’ll get this back by easter and then the real work begins!

PS. There might be something exciting happening with The Kane Saga in March —stay tuned!

• Book Three: Jaren is very quiet. I think he is enjoying the break.

Project Blade
We have written 13 chapters so far, with up to chapter 17 fully fleshed out and outlined. I am really enjoying this one and letting the creativity flow in small bursts.

Project IC
I definitely need a new name for this one but nothing has come to me quite yet. I’m hoping to get some of the outline fully fleshed out for this one soon, maybe over the easter break if my little one will let me work alone for long enough.

Other Stories
I;ve had a few other stories cry out for my attention. Another duology has presented itself but I am unsure how much spice it wants so there is no definitive title or author name to go with this one. But I am loving where this FMC is taking me. Then there’s my epic fantasy no spice standalone, which has one of the most fun opening scenes I’ve ever outlined. I think this MIGHT be the next project I start drafting.

What I am Reading

Reading has slowed, as expected now that I am back to working full time and have fully recovered from jetlag.

Currently I have just started an ARC of Nightweaver and I am enjoying it so far.

Hello, hello!

Happy New Year—yes, I’m a little late, but as a writer teetering on the edge of burnout, I decided to take a much-needed break. Sometimes, stepping away is the only way to recharge, and I’m so glad I did.

I hope 2025 has been kind to you so far. January often gets a bad reputation for being dark and dreary, like December but without the holidays to look forward to. Luckily, I escaped the gloom for a little while and celebrated my birthday in sunny Australia! There’s something magical about starting the year under bright skies and warm weather—it was exactly what I needed.

Plus, I even got to meet Pagan Alexandria! Pagan and I have been writer friends for a while and while we’ve spoken over zoom and messenger and DMs there was something super special about spending the weekend with her in Sydney. The weather may not have been on our side, thanks to a storm, but lunch and mini golf were the perfect alternatives!

Since taking that break, I haven’t written a word since December 15th. But now feels like the perfect time to dive back in. My mind is buzzing with ideas, though there’s never enough time to tackle them all, is there?

This week, I have a big interview for a new job—actually, it’s tomorrow! It’s a role in the book world, something I’m incredibly passionate about, so all the good vibes you can send my way would mean the world. I’m equal parts excited and nervous!

Back in my home office, I’m easing into writing by reacquainting myself with my characters and stories. First up: finishing their outlines and finding my way back into the groove. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, I’m what’s called a "Plantser," which is somewhere between a plotter (someone who meticulously plans every detail) and a pantser (someone who writes by the seat of their pants). It’s a fun way to write, but it definitely has its challenges—like hitting a dead end when your characters go completely silent.

Here’s to a fresh start and finding that creative spark again!

Writer’s block, creative burnout, missing muse—whatever you want to call it, it hit me hard. Life got stressful, and my creativity took a back seat. But with the start of a new year, I’m ready to tackle fresh opportunities and breathe life back into my projects.

The Royals of Osterdel

• Book Two: While I didn’t get as much done before my trip as I’d hoped, I’m thrilled to share that Book Two has been sent off to my alpha readers! Their feedback is expected by the end of February, so I’m giving them plenty of time (while trying not to get too jittery).

• The Last Dragonknight: This week, I’ll begin the final pass to ensure it’s polished and ready for the Kickstarter launch. It’s so exciting to be at this stage!

• Book Three: Jaren’s story has been a tough one. I was in the throes of burnout while drafting it, so it’s been challenging to make progress. For now, it’s on pause, but I’m hopeful that once life settles down, I’ll find the clarity to dive back in.

Project Blade
I’m 11 chapters in, with 14 outlined, and I couldn’t be more excited to return to this story. It’s been simmering in the back of my mind, and I’m eager to figure out where it’s heading. A brainstorming session with my writing bestie is on the horizon once I’ve recovered from jetlag. After that? It’s full steam ahead!

Project IC
This one feels like it has so much potential! I’m still in the brainstorming phase, but the inspirations—Dragon Age: Inquisition meets My Lady Jane—have me buzzing with ideas. It’s been such a fun concept to explore, and I can’t wait until I have more concrete details to share.

Project Assassin
My next R. S. Williams project is shaping up to be a duology. I’ve started outlining Book One, and I’m already excited to see where this story takes me. It’s still early days, but I can feel the potential simmering beneath the surface.

Other Stories
There might be an exciting opportunity coming my way (fingers crossed!), and I’m currently planning a standalone project under the R. S. Williams name. This one is pure epic fantasy—a return to my roots. The outline is still a work in progress, but I’m really enjoying crafting this world and its characters. I hope to share more later this year!

Goals for 2025
This year, I’m giving myself the freedom to go with the flow when it comes to writing. However, I do have a few milestones in mind:

• Finish the first draft of Project Blade.

• Hopefully wrap up Book Three in the Royals of Osterdel series.

• Start either Project IC or one of the R. S. Williams projects.

It’s a big list, but I’m optimistic and ready to see where the journey takes me!

What I am Reading

I wanted reading to be more fun this year, and so I decided that I’m only going to read when I feel like it. Sure, that means I might not end up with 96 books read on my belt but sometimes I think reading TOO much can stifle creativity, so if I don’t feel like it, I won’t be reading. Streaks be damned!

This month I enjoyed 6 books while I was on holiday. The jetlag really helped because what else are you supposed to do at 3am when everyone else is asleep?

Obviously I read Onyx Storm - feel free to DM me on Instagram if you fancy chatting about it. I also read an ARC of A Fate Forged in Fire by Hazel McBride and honestly I have no notes, it was a fantastic book that I enjoyed so much, along with an ARC of Iron & Embers by Helen Scheuerer - I will literally read anything by this woman, she is a magician with words.

Up next is another ARC of Silvercloak by Laura Steven and then I’ll be moving onto Metal Slinger to see what all the fuss is about.

Welcome to November… god it’s November. This year really has been flying by and I feel like I have nothing to show for it. But I am working away on what I can, whenever I have time, which seems too have decreased rapidly now that my child is almost 3.

Lately, I have been really struggling with figuring out how to fit everything into my weeks. Life has been testing me to no end and all I really want to do is be a good person. A good wife, a good mother, a good writer. My holiday next year cannot come quick enough.

Now, onto the writing updates!

As I said my. writing mojo has returned and I am ready to get stuck into the ideas that are hovering around my mind at the moment.

The Royals of Osterdel: The Last Dragonknight is having one last round of readers before I finalise for ARCs and get started on writing the bonus content for the kickstarter. I felt it needed some more eyes and I am glad I did get some extra eyes because it’s going to be so much better! Book Two, is back from the editor and I will be going through their comments soon, and Book Three is going slowly. I hope to have the first draft finished by the end of the year so I can send it to my alpha reader before heading off to Australia.

Project Blade: I was really struggling with the plot for this one so once I wrote down my ideas for the first 5-6 chapters I figured I would just get straight into writing it. I’m now 6 chapters in and loving every moment. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some plotting done over the Christmas holidays. I already have a few ideas that will just be incredible and I am excited to read them.

Project Assassin: My next R. S. Williams project has been put on the back burner but I do plan on looking at the outline in 2025 and hopefully get started on writing late 2025.

Other stories: That’s all on my mind at the moment. Anything extra that comes down will be put in my idea bank for later use because my brain might explode.

What I am Reading

I am up to 81 books read. I’ve just started my ARC of A Sky of Emerald Stars and I’ve also got the dramatised graphic audio of Fourth Wing on the go!
