You are tired, you have probably been “on” for several hours, and somewhere between lunch and finally sitting down, your mind starts replaying everything that happened. You remember the transition that could have been smoother, the announcement you stumbled through, the note you missed, the conversation you wish you had handled differently, or the one thing in the sermon, rehearsal, or service that did not go exactly the way you had hoped.

The interesting thing is that everyone else may have already moved on.

You have not.

I have seen this often as I have talked with leaders whose Primal Question is “Am I Good Enough?” They are usually not trying to be difficult, and most would probably never describe themselves as perfectionists. They simply want to get things right. They care about quality. They prepare. They notice things other people miss, and they often hold themselves to a standard much higher than anyone around them is asking them to meet.

There is a lot to appreciate about that.

Some of the best leaders I know have this kind of attention to detail. They do not want to give God or people something halfway done. They think carefully before they speak. They prepare before they lead. They care about doing things well, and because of that, the rest of us are often better.

But I have also noticed how quickly that gift can become heavy.

There can be a big difference between “I want to do this well” and “I need to do this perfectly so I can know I am good enough.” That difference may be almost invisible to everyone else, but the person carrying it can feel it every day.

It is why a leader can receive ten compliments and still go home thinking about the one thing that went wrong. It is why someone can finish a project that everyone else thinks is excellent and immediately see the three things they would change. It is why criticism can sometimes hurt so deeply. The criticism may be about something you did, but somewhere between your ears and your heart it becomes something about who you are.

That is where the branches can begin telling us something about the root.

The branch might look like perfectionism. It might look like overpreparing, second-guessing yourself, comparing yourself to another leader, or having difficulty admitting a mistake. But underneath it may be an old question that has been asking for reassurance for a very long time:

“Am I good enough?”

I think this is one of the reasons understanding your Primal Question can be so helpful. The assessment does not give us an excuse for our behavior, and it certainly does not become our identity. It simply helps us recognize what may be happening beneath the surface.

Once I can see the root, I can begin to understand the branch.

And perhaps more importantly, I can begin listening to what God says about it.

Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 12 have become especially meaningful to me here: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.”

That almost sounds backward to those of us who spend so much of our lives trying to get everything right.

We want God to use our strengths, our preparation, our excellence, and the things we have finally figured out. Yet God reminds us that He is also perfectly capable of working through our weakness.

That means I can make a mistake and still be useful. I can miss something and still be loved. I can admit that I do not know and still be a good leader. I can even have a Sunday that does not go the way I planned and trust that somehow God was never dependent on my perfect performance in the first place. Maybe that is worth remembering the next time you find yourself replaying everything you wish you had done differently.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to grow. There is nothing wrong with excellence. There is nothing wrong with looking back and asking what you could do better next time.

Just be careful that somewhere along the way, “How can I grow?” does not quietly become “Was I good enough?”

Those are very different questions. One can help us become healthier leaders. The other can keep us trying to prove something that God’s grace has already settled.

One of the quiet dangers of leadership is believing experience has made us experts. The longer we serve, the easier it can be to rely on what we already know.

Psalm 119 gives us a better posture: teach me again.

Faithful leaders remain teachable leaders. We keep bringing our assumptions, habits, and decisions back before God, asking Him to shape not only what we know, but how we live.

Before you lead today, remember that you are still a student of the One you serve.

Before you lead today, pray:
Lord, keep my heart teachable. Give me wisdom to know Your ways and humility to follow them with my whole heart. Amen.

But through my own journey with the Primal Question and the conversations I have had with other leaders, I have started noticing how easily a good desire for fruitfulness can become something else.

For the person whose Primal Question is “Am I Successful?”, achievement can carry more emotional weight than everyone else realizes. They are often highly motivated, hardworking, and goal-oriented. Give them a challenge and they are ready to go. Give them a mountain and they are already looking for the trail.

Those are wonderful qualities in a leader. I enjoy being around people who want to move something forward. They inspire the rest of us to quit talking about what we ought to do and actually do something.

The problem is not success.

The problem comes when success starts answering a question it was never designed to answer.

I have watched this happen in ministry, and if I am paying attention, I can see pieces of it in myself too. We pray for God to do something, work incredibly hard toward it, and then He does it. We celebrate for a little while, maybe even thank everyone who helped make it happen, but it does not take long before our minds move on to the next thing.

What is next?
How do we make it bigger?
How do we do it better?
What did the church down the road do?

I sometimes wonder if ministry leaders are among the few people who can experience an answer to prayer on Sunday and by Monday morning already be disappointed that it was not bigger.

That is where I think we need to look beneath the branches.

The branch may be ambition, comparison, overworking, or constantly moving the finish line. Underneath it, however, may be a much deeper question: “Am I successful?”

Of course, that also means the opposite can begin to feel true.

Attendance drops. A program struggles. Someone leaves the church. The event we worked on for six months does not turn out like we imagined. Suddenly, we are not simply evaluating something that did not work. We are evaluating ourselves.

That is a dangerous place for a ministry leader to live.

One of the reasons I keep coming back to John 15 is because Jesus gives us such a different picture. He does not tell the branches to work harder at producing fruit. He tells them to abide.

That has become increasingly important to me.

Jesus absolutely cares about fruit. In fact, He tells us that the Father is glorified when we bear much fruit. But the order matters. The branch does not produce fruit to prove that it belongs to the vine. It produces fruit because it is already connected to the vine.

Maybe that is something the Am I Successful? leader needs to hear again.

Your drive is a gift. Your ability to see a goal and move people toward it is a gift. Your desire to make things better can bless a church, a family, and everyone you lead. Do not lose that.

Remember, Do not ask success to tell you who you are. Success makes a terrible identity because eventually something will not work.

Perhaps the better question for us is not simply, “Was I successful?”

Maybe it is, “Was I faithful to what God asked me to do?”

Those questions may sometimes have the same answer and sometimes they will not. I am learning that knowing the difference is part of becoming a healthier leader.

The branches will always matter, but Jesus keeps calling us back to the root. Stay connected to Him. Be faithful with what He has placed in your hands. Work hard. Lead well. Celebrate the fruit when it comes.

Then leave the results with God. Your ministry may have successes and failures. “Neither one gets to tell you who you are.”

I have probably learned more about this Primal Question than any of the others for one simple reason: “Am I Wanted?” is my question.

When I first began understanding the Primal Question a few years ago, I started looking back over my life and seeing things I had never connected before. I love people. I love bringing people together. I enjoy walking into a room and discovering how everyone is connected. I can sometimes remember how I know someone quicker than I can remember their name, which can make for an interesting few seconds when they are walking toward me. I want my wife and me to enjoy being together. I want my son and me to stay connected frequently. I want friendships that last, and I genuinely enjoy encouraging people and helping them connect with one another.

For most of my life, I just thought that was my personality. Now I understand there is something deeper underneath it.

My deepest emotional question is “Am I Wanted?”

This means I tend to experience life through the lens of connection and belonging. When that question is getting a “yes,” life feels pretty good. I feel connected, included, useful, and part of something. When something happens that makes the answer feel like a “no” or even a “maybe,” I can feel it much more deeply than someone else might.

That is where understanding the root, my Primal Question, has been so helpful to me.

What do I think when a friend does not call back? People I know get together and I was not invited. A person I care about seems distant. A team makes a decision without including me. None of those things necessarily means anything about the relationship, but my heart can begin writing a story before I know the facts.

And leaders can do this too.

When a leader wants to know “Am I Wanted?”

A ministry leader whose question is “Am I Wanted?” can become very good at reading the room. We notice who is connected and who is not. We can sense when relationships feel different. We want people to enjoy being on the team, and we often work hard to create a culture where everyone belongs. Those are wonderful gifts in ministry because ministry is about people.

But every gift has a scramble.

The same leader who creates belonging for everyone else can begin working awfully hard to make sure he belongs too. We can avoid a difficult conversation because we do not want it to damage the relationship. We can say yes when we really need to say no. We can take someone’s distance personally or spend far too much time wondering why someone has not responded to a text.

I wish I could tell you I have only seen those things in other people. I have not.

Understanding my Primal Question has helped me recognize those moments earlier. I can stop and ask myself, “Rhon, is something actually wrong here, or did something just make you wonder if you were wanted?”

That question has saved me from more than a few stories I was preparing to write in my own head.

This is where the roots and branches language has become so important to me. The branch someone else sees might be people-pleasing, overthinking a relationship, avoiding conflict, or trying too hard to stay connected. But underneath the branch may be a much simpler root: I want to know that I belong, I am wanted.

Every leaders needs to know their Primal Question

The beautiful part of understanding your Primal Question is that the root does not only explain some of your struggles. It can also help you recognize your gift.

My need to be wanted has helped me understand how much I want other people to feel wanted. I want the person standing alone to have someone to talk to. I want the young ministry leader to know someone sees something in them. I want to connect people who need each other. The very question that can send me scrambling when I am unhealthy is also connected to one of the greatest gifts I can offer when I am healthy.

Maybe that is one of the reasons Isaiah 43 means so much to me. God says, “I have called you by your name; you are mine.” There is something wonderfully settling about those words for someone who spends a lifetime asking, “Am I Wanted?” Before I am wanted by a group, a church, a friend, or even the people closest to me, I belong to Him. That does not make relationships less important. If anything, it frees me to enjoy them more because I no longer have to make every relationship answer a question God has already answered.

Pay attention to this….

So if “Am I Wanted?” is your Primal Question, pay attention this week when you feel yourself reacting to distance, exclusion, or disconnection. Before you decide what someone else’s actions mean, give yourself enough room to ask, “Is this really about what happened, or has something touched that old question in me again?”

I am learning to ask that question myself.

And I am learning that sometimes the healthiest thing I can do is stop trying to get everyone else to answer “yes” and remember that God already has.

Who needs to discover their Primal Question?

Maybe you know someone who keeps wondering why certain conversations hit them harder than others, why they respond the way they do under pressure, or why the same frustrations seem to keep showing up in their relationships and leadership. Understanding your Primal Question will not answer every question about who you are, but it can help uncover the root beneath some of the branches you keep trying to change. One of the greatest dangers in ministry is not that we stop working for God, it is that we slowly stop longing for Him.

We can become experts at preparing worship while neglecting worship. We can study God’s Word to teach it without allowing it to first search our own hearts. Ministry can fill our calendars while quietly emptying our souls.

David wrote Psalm 63 from the wilderness. Surrounded by dryness, he discovered that his deepest need was not a change in circumstances, but the presence of God.

Before you help others encounter Him today, take a moment to seek Him for yourself.

Lord, awaken a fresh hunger for Your presence. May my greatest desire always be to know You more deeply, and may that longing shape the way I lead today. Amen.

I’ve done it and maybe you have too.

I can remember driving home after a Sunday morning thinking about one conversation while completely forgetting the dozens of smiles, handshakes, and words of encouragement that came before it. It is amazing how one critical comment can become louder than everything else that happened that day.

Over the years, I’ve become curious about that. Why do some comments roll right off our shoulders while others seem to stay with us for days? Why do we replay certain conversations over and over, wondering what we should have said differently or whether we somehow let someone down?

As I’ve coached people through the Primal Question, I’ve noticed a pattern.

People whose deepest question is Am I Loved? are often incredibly compassionate. They care deeply about relationships. They are the first to notice when someone is hurting, the first to write an encouraging note, and the first to wonder if someone felt left out. This is one of the beautiful ways God has wired them but every gift has a place where it can become heavy.

When your deepest emotional question is Am I Loved?, criticism is rarely just criticism. It can quietly begin to sound like rejection. A disagreement starts feeling personal. A disappointed volunteer becomes evidence that you’ve disappointed everyone. One difficult conversation suddenly makes you wonder if people still care about you at all.

I’ve watched leaders carry that weight for weeks, and most of the people around them never had any idea it was happening.

The interesting thing is that the branch everyone sees is people-pleasing, over-apologizing, or avoiding hard conversations. But the root is much deeper than that. Somewhere inside, the heart has started believing that love is something that can be gained…or lost…based on how well we perform in relationships.

When I think about that, I cannot help but think about Jesus.

He loved people perfectly.
He healed them.
He fed them.
He taught them.

Yet, people still criticized Him, misunderstood Him, and eventually rejected Him. Jesus never measured the Father’s love by people’s approval. He already knew He was loved. Maybe that’s why, before Jesus began His public ministry, the Father said, “This is my beloved Son.” Nothing had been accomplished yet.

No miracles.
No sermons.
No crowds.
Just love.

I wonder how differently we would receive criticism if we started each day remembering that same truth. Not that everyone will always agree with us. They won’t. Not that leadership will suddenly become easier. It won’t.

But that our identity has never rested in the opinions of people. It has always rested in the unchanging love of our Father. As you move through this week, pay attention to the conversations you keep replaying in your mind.

Then ask yourself a different question.

Am I trying to solve a problem…or am I trying to convince myself that I am still loved?

Sometimes simply recognizing the root is the first step toward experiencing the freedom Christ has already given us.

Every ministry leader eventually receives difficult news. A hard conversation. A disappointing decision. A family in crisis. A ministry setback. While we cannot control what comes our way, we can choose where our hearts are anchored.

Psalm 112 describes a leader whose confidence is not built on favorable circumstances but on the unchanging character of God. A steady heart is not a heart without emotion. It is a heart that has learned where to rest when everything else feels uncertain.

As you lead today, ask God to make your heart steady, not because life is easy, but because He is faithful.

A prayer for today:
Father, make my heart steady in You. When uncertainty comes, help me trust Your faithfulness and lead with quiet confidence. Amen.

Not because I’m looking for the right answer, but because people often reveal more than they realize in the first few minutes of a conversation.

A while back I was sitting with someone who had taken the Primal Question Assessment. We had talked about ministry, family, work, and life for nearly an hour when they looked at me and said, almost apologetically, “I don’t really worry. I’m just responsible.”

I smiled because I’ve heard that sentence more times than I can count.

In fact, I don’t know that I’ve ever had someone whose deepest question is Am I Secure? introduce themselves as a worrier. They don’t see themselves that way.

They’re usually the ones who remembered to bring the extra extension cord, printed the backup copies, filled the church van with gas the day before the trip, and packed an extra phone charger because, well…you never know.

The funny thing is, most of us are really glad they’re on our team.

Churches need people like this.

Families do too.

More than once I’ve found myself benefiting from someone’s careful planning while thinking, “I’m really glad they thought about that because I sure didn’t.”

That’s one of the gifts God has given them.

The challenge is that every gift has a place where it can quietly drift from serving us to carrying us.

As I’ve continued coaching, I’ve started noticing that people asking, Am I Secure? aren’t usually trying to control anyone. They’re trying to prepare for everything. Somewhere along the way, they began believing that if they could think far enough ahead, anticipate enough problems, or prepare for every possibility, then maybe they could finally relax.

The problem, of course, is that tomorrow never stops producing new things to prepare for.

There’s always another bill to pay. Another meeting to think through. Another child to worry about. Another decision to make. Another “what if” waiting just around the corner.

Without realizing it, today’s peace gets traded for tomorrow’s possibilities.

As I’ve thought about that, I’ve found myself coming back to the words of Jesus in Matthew 6.

“Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

I’ve heard those words my entire life, but they sound different after sitting with so many ministry leaders.

Jesus isn’t telling us that planning is wrong.

After all, Jesus planned. He sent disciples ahead into towns. He prepared His followers for what was coming. He intentionally invested in twelve men for three years. Wisdom plans.

But Jesus never carried tomorrow the way we often do. He was fully present where His Father had placed Him that day. Maybe that’s the invitation we’ve missed. Planning isn’t the opposite of faith. Neither is responsibility.

The question is whether we’ve slowly begun believing that our security rests on our ability to prepare instead of God’s ability to provide.

That’s a subtle shift, but it changes everything.

I’ve noticed that people whose deepest question is Am I Secure? often carry an enormous burden that no one else even knows they’re carrying. They’re thinking about next week while everyone else is enjoying today. They’re solving problems that haven’t happened yet. They’re rehearsing conversations that may never take place.

If that’s you, let me encourage you with something I’ve had to remind myself more than once.

God has never asked you to live in tomorrow. He’s asked you to trust Him today. There’s a reason Jesus taught us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Not next month’s bread. Not next year’s bread. Today’s. Our Father has always met His children one day at a time.

Maybe this week the question isn’t whether you’ve planned enough.

Maybe the better question is this:

Have I been carrying tomorrow so tightly that I’ve forgotten God has already promised to meet me today?

Leadership often focuses on what others can see; our words, our decisions, our preparation, our influence. But God has always been more interested in the person behind the platform.

Psalm 15 reminds us that character is formed long before it is revealed. Integrity isn’t something we put on when people are watching. It is the quiet work of allowing God to shape our hearts when no one else is around.

Before you lead today, ask God to make your private walk with Him as beautiful as your public ministry.

Because the greatest testimony of your leadership is not what people hear from you on Sunday, but who you are on Monday.

A prayer for today:
Lord, continue shaping my character. May my private life reflect the same devotion to You as my public ministry, and may my leadership flow from a heart that is wholly Yours. Amen.

Better communicators.
Better leaders.
Better spouses.
Better parents.

So we work harder. Read another book. Listen to another podcast. Attend another conference. All in hopes that changing our behavior will eventually change our lives.

The problem is…

Jesus rarely started with the branches. He always went after the roots.

Think about His conversations throughout the Gospels. He consistently looked beyond what people were doing to discover what was happening underneath. Anger. Fear. Pride. Worry. Performance. He understood that healthy fruit only grows from healthy roots.

That’s one of the reasons I love the Primal Question Assessment.

It doesn’t simply identify behaviors. It helps uncover one of the roots beneath those behaviors. Over the past year, more than a thousand people have taken the assessment. Many of you reading this already know your Primal Question. But knowing your question isn’t the finish line. It’s the beginning. The assessment doesn’t tell you who you are. It helps reveal one of the roots that has been quietly feeding the branches of your life for years.

So over the next several weeks, I want us to revisit each of the seven Primal Questions.

Not to explain the assessment again because most of you already know your result. Instead, I want us to explore what each question has been whispering to us for years……and compare that voice with the voice of Christ.

Let’s begin with the question…

“Am I Safe?”

One of the things I’ve learned after sitting with hundreds of pastors, worship leaders, business leaders, and ministry staff is that I’ve never had someone whose deepest question is “Am I Safe?” introduce themselves by saying,

“Hi, I’m Rhon…and I think I micromanage.”

Not once. Instead, they tell me,

And honestly… they’re often right. These are the people who notice details the rest of us completely miss. They remembered the batteries. They checked the trailer. They’ve already thought through Plan B and probably Plan C. Meanwhile, the rest of us are wondering who has the church keys.

I love serving with people wired this way. Their gift protects churches. It prevents mistakes. It creates order where there could have been chaos. But every gift has a shadow.I remember one coaching conversation where someone confidently told me,

“Micromanaging is good leadership.”

I smiled, not because I agreed, I smiled because they completely believed it.

For just a second I wondered if we were going to need a support group for everyone who worked for them.

Instead, I asked,

“What would it feel like if your leader managed you that way?”

Silence.

Not because they were embarrassed. Because they had never considered that question. You see, people whose deepest question is “Am I Safe?” usually aren’t trying to control people.\ They’re trying to create safety. That’s a very important difference.

Somewhere along the way, their heart quietly reached a conclusion:

That’s the root. The branch is micromanagement. The root is fear. Until we address the root, we’ll spend our lives trimming branches that continue to grow back.

Jesus offers something entirely different. He doesn’t condemn preparation. Preparation is a gift. He simply reminds us that peace doesn’t come from controlling every outcome. It comes from trusting the One who holds every outcome in His hands.

Maybe that’s the invitation this week.

Don’t ask,

“How can I stop micromanaging?”

Instead ask,

“What has my heart been believing about safety…and what does Jesus have to say about that?”

Because lasting change rarely begins with the branches. It begins at the roots.

One of the greatest privileges in ministry is helping pass the faith to those who come after us. While programs, plans, and preferences may change, the mission remains the same: to tell the next generation about the faithfulness of God.

Psalm 78 reminds us that leadership is bigger than the present moment. The seeds we plant today may bear fruit long after we are gone. Before you lead today, remember that investing in others is never wasted.

Faithful ministry always thinks beyond itself.

Lord, help me invest wisely in those who follow behind me. May my life and leadership point the next generation to Your faithfulness. Amen.

I stared at that number for a minute not because one thousand is some extraordinary milestone. In the grand scheme of things, it really is not, but as I looked at it, it stopped feeling like a number.bIt became people!

I began thinking about the pastors I have met with over coffee. The worship leaders who have invited me into their offices. The ministry staffs I have coached. The husbands and wives who wanted to understand one another better. The parents who simply wanted to become more intentional with their children and children who wanted to understand their parents better.

The older I get, the more convinced I become that one of the greatest gifts we can give the people around us is self-awareness. We spend so much of our lives learning how to preach, teach, sing, lead meetings, manage calendars, build teams, and solve problems. All of those things matter. They make us more capable leaders.

Somewhere along the way, I realized I had spent years learning how to lead others without spending nearly enough time understanding what was happening inside my own heart.

That realization is what first drew me to the Primal Question.

When I first heard Mike Foster talk about it, I honestly assumed it would be another personality assessment. Over the years I had taken plenty of them. I have benefited from DISC. I appreciate Myers-Briggs. The Enneagram has helped many people understand patterns in their lives, and I still think The Five Love Languages has strengthened countless marriages and friendships.

Those tools are incredibly helpful because they describe how we tend to think, communicate, and behave.

The Primal Question felt different.

Instead of asking me how I was wired, it asked me why.

Why does criticism affect one leader differently than another?
Why do two people experience the very same situation but walk away with completely different emotions?
Why do some conversations seem to stay with us for days while other people barely remember them?

Those questions stayed with me.

As I began learning more, I discovered something that was both freeing and challenging. According to the Primal Question framework, every one of us has a deepest emotional question that begins forming early in life. We spend much of our lives looking for answers to that question, often without even realizing it.

For me, understanding that question was like someone finally handing me a map to places I had visited my entire life but never really understood.

What it has done for me

I eventually discovered that my Primal Question is #4: “Am I Wanted?”

The more I learned about it, the more it explained my life.

I have always loved people. I love being invited into conversations, gathering people around a table, introducing friends to one another, and helping people feel like they belong. Relationships have never been something I simply enjoy, they have always been something I pursue.

When I look back, I can see that I have viewed much of life through that one question.

I want Vickki and me to genuinely enjoy being together. I want my son and me to stay connected as he builds his own life. I want to encourage the pastors, worship leaders, and ministry servants I meet each week. I want people to know they matter and that someone sees them.

For years, I thought that was simply my personality. Now I understand it is something deeper.

One of the beautiful discoveries of the Primal Question is that our greatest emotional need often becomes our greatest gift to others. Because I long to know that I am wanted, I naturally spend my life helping other people feel wanted.

It also explains something my family has laughed about for years. I may forget your name five minutes after we meet, but I will probably remember who introduced us, where we met, who your pastor is, what car you drive, what church you attend, and how you’re connected to three other people I know. My mind has always been wired for relationships and connections.

Today, I no longer see that as just a personality trait.

I see it as a gift God has given me to steward.

That is one of the reasons I became a Certified Primal Question Coach. I want other people to experience the same freedom I found when I finally understood the question I had been asking all along. Because when you begin to understand your deepest question, you also begin to discover one of God’s greatest gifts in your life.

That has been one of the greatest gifts the Primal Question has given me.

Not perfection.

Awareness.

That is why I continue talking about the Primal Question everywhere I go.

I talk about it because I have watched it give people language for things they have felt their entire lives but could never explain.

There is something beautiful about watching a pastor pause in the middle of a coaching conversation and quietly say, “That makes so much sense.”

Or watching a ministry team realize that the person they have been frustrated with is not trying to be difficult at all. They are simply asking a different emotional question than everyone else in the room.

Those are the moments that came rushing back when I saw the number one thousand.

The assessment itself only takes ten or fifteen minutes to complete. In many ways, that is the easiest part of the journey. The conversations that follow are where the real work begins. They are the conversations around dinner tables, in church offices, during long walks with a spouse, over coffee with a trusted friend, or in a coaching session where someone finally has language for what they have been feeling for years.

Ministry leaders know what it means to work hard. Preparation, planning, rehearsals, meetings, and countless unseen acts of service fill our days. Yet Psalm 127 gently reminds us that activity and fruitfulness are not the same thing.

God never intended for His work to rest solely on our shoulders. Before you lead today, release the burden of trying to produce results that only He can bring. Faithfulness is your calling. Fruitfulness belongs to Him.

You are invited to labor with God, not apart from Him.

A prayer for today:
Father, guard me from striving without depending on You. Build what only You can build, and help me serve with faithful hands and a peaceful heart. Amen.

During his session he shared “15 Ways to Teach Your Worship Team to Be More Expressive.”

It was one of those teachings where you find yourself writing quickly, not because the ideas are complicated, but because they are simple, practical, and deeply biblical.

As someone who has spent over 30 years serving in worship ministry, I found myself both affirmed and challenged.

Expressive worship is not about personality, hype, or performance.
It’s about authentic communication of truth through music.

Praise Is Internal — But It Must Be Expressed

John began with a simple but powerful thought:

Praise is an internal adoration connected to an external expression.

Jesus reminded us in Matthew 22:37 that we are to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind.

Worship has always involved the whole person.

The reality is this:
God created us to express what we love.

Which means expressive worship is not something we manufacture.
It’s something we release.

Choirs/Stage Teams Are Communicators First

One of the most helpful reminders from the session was this:

Your choir/stage team is not just singing songs.

They are communicating the gospel.

John challenged worship leaders to help their teams understand that every song communicates at least three things:

• Salvation to the lost
• Encouragement to the believer
• Joy and passion to the world

That perspective alone changes how singers approach worship leading.

When choir members understand they are communicators of truth, their posture changes.

Passion + Precision = Excellence

One of the simplest and most memorable statements from the teaching was what John called the equation of excellence:

Passion + Precision = Excellence

Passion without precision can feel chaotic.

Precision without passion can feel lifeless.

But when a worship ministry pursues both, something beautiful happens.
The music becomes both compelling and clear.

Expression Must Be Taught

One of the biggest takeaways for me was that expressive worship culture doesn’t happen accidentally.

It must be modeled, explained, and practiced.

John shared several practical exercises leaders can use in rehearsal:

• Sing to the person next to you face-to-face
• Practice communicating lyrics without singing them
• Sing as if you are speaking to one specific person
• Watch and evaluate communication together

Those simple exercises help singers move from performing music to communicating truth.

Rehearsals Are More Than Rehearsals

Another powerful reminder was that rehearsals are not just about preparing music.

They are opportunities for discipleship.

Choirs grow when rehearsals include moments where leaders:

• share Scripture
• remind the team of their purpose
• celebrate moments of worship
• coach communication

In other words, rehearsals are where the culture of worship leadership is built.

Choirs Reflect Their Leaders

One line from the session made the whole room smile because we all knew it was true:

Show me a non-expressive director, and I’ll show you a non-expressive choir.

Choirs naturally take on the personality and posture of their leader.

Which means expressive worship often begins with the simple question:

Am I modeling what I’m asking them to do?

One More Thought That Stayed With Me

John closed with a phrase that every worship leader needs to hear:

“Long obedience in the same direction.”

Healthy worship ministries aren’t built in a single retreat or rehearsal season.

They are built over years of:

• teaching
• modeling
• patience
• consistency

And that kind of leadership produces something far more important than a good choir.

It produces a worshiping church.

I’m Grateful for Leaders Who Invest

I’m grateful for leaders like John Bolin who are willing to pour into worship pastors and ministry leaders.

Moments like these roundtables remind me again why it’s so important that we learn from one another and keep growing as leaders.

Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t simply expressive choirs.

The goal is helping the people of God lift their voices with resounding joy.

Leadership often teaches us to keep moving. There are always needs to meet, problems to solve, and plans to make. Yet God occasionally invites us to do something that feels unnatural: be still.

Psalm 46 is not a call to inactivity, but to surrender. Before you lead others today, allow your heart to rest in the truth that God is God and you are not. His kingdom does not depend on your striving, and His purposes are not threatened by your limitations.

Stillness is not weakness. It is trust.

A prayer for today:
Lord, quiet my anxious thoughts and remind me that You are God. Help me lead today with peace rather than pressure. Amen.

Few know Heman.

The Worship Leader/ Ministry Leader who was hurting

Heman was one of the chief musicians appointed by David to lead worship in Israel. He was a songwriter, worship leader, and trusted spiritual voice among God’s people. By every outward measure, he was a successful leader. He held a significant role in the worship life of the nation and helped guide God’s people in their praise.

But when we hear Heman’s voice most clearly in Scripture, we do not find him standing on a platform celebrating victory.

We find him hurting.

Psalm 88 is one of the most unique Psalms in all of Scripture. Most Psalms of lament eventually turn a corner. Somewhere near the end, hope breaks through. The writer remembers God’s faithfulness and finishes with renewed confidence.

Not Heman.

He begins in darkness, and he ends in darkness. His anguish is unrelenting. His distress appears unresolved. His circumstances seem unchanged.

Listen to his words:

“I am overwhelmed with troubles and my life draws near to death.”

“I am like one without strength.”

“You have put me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths.”

These are not the words of a man who has everything figured out. These are the words of a ministry leader carrying a burden he cannot seem to shake. What strikes me most about Psalm 88 is not the darkness. It is the direction. Heman never stops talking to God.

The Psalm opens with these words:

“O Lord, God of my salvation, I cry out day and night before you.”

And then he keeps crying out. Even when heaven seems silent. Even when the answers do not come. Even when the darkness lingers longer than he would like.

He keeps praying.

As I reflect on Heman’s story, I cannot help but think about the ministry leaders I meet every week. The worship pastor carrying criticism that nobody else sees. The pastor navigating a difficult season of leadership. The student minister wondering if the investment is making any difference. The bi-vocational leader who is exhausted from balancing ministry, work, and family. The ministry spouse quietly carrying burdens while supporting everyone else.

What Heman Teaches Us About Emotional Health

Many of us have been taught how to lead ministries, teams, rehearsals, meetings, and people. We have learned how to cast vision, solve problems, organize events, and care for others.

What we often have not learned is how to lead ourselves through disappointment.

We know how to keep serving. We know how to keep producing. We know how to keep showing up.

But when grief, loneliness, rejection, discouragement, or uncertainty enters our lives, many of us do not know what to do with it. So we hide it. We minimize it. We convince ourselves that if we were stronger spiritually, we would not feel this way. Heman gives us a different picture. He refuses to pretend. He tells God the truth. And in doing so, he models something that every ministry leader desperately needs: Understanding Emotional Health.

Emotional health is not the absence of struggle. It is not having all the answers. It is not reaching a place where disappointment no longer affects you. Emotional health is having the courage to bring your whole self before God.

Your fears. Your questions. Your frustrations. Your grief. Your doubts. Your exhaustion. Your disappointment.

Heman does not sanitize his emotions before bringing them to the Lord. He simply tells the truth about where he is. That honesty is one of the clearest signs of spiritual maturity.

As I coach ministry leaders, I have discovered that many of our greatest struggles are not primarily ministry problems. We often think we need a better strategy, a better plan, a better system, or a better solution. Sometimes what we actually need is the courage to bring our whole hearts before God.

Heman reminds us that emotional health begins when we stop pretending and start praying honestly.

The Questions Beneath the Questions

This is also where I often see the connection to what I call the Primal Question.

Each of us carries a deep emotional question that shapes how we experience relationships, leadership, and even our walk with God. For some, the question is, Am I Safe? For others, Am I Secure? Am I Loved? Am I Wanted? Am I Successful? Am I Good Enough? Or Do I Have Purpose?

Most of the time those questions stay beneath the surface.

But pain has a way of bringing them to light.

When ministry gets hard, the question gets louder.

And when the question gets louder, we often move into what I call the Scramble. We begin searching for answers through performance, approval, control, perfectionism, productivity, or withdrawal. We start trying to solve emotionally what only God can truly answer spiritually.

But Heman models a different way.

What makes Psalm 88 so compelling is not that Heman finds an answer. He doesn’t. The darkness remains. The questions remain. The circumstances appear unchanged. Yet throughout the Psalm, he continues bringing his heart before God.

Rather than searching for relief in his position, his influence, or his accomplishments, Heman keeps turning toward the Lord. He refuses to let his pain have the final word. Instead of running from God in his confusion, he runs to Him.

That may be the most powerful lesson of Psalm 88.

The goal is not to stop asking your question. The goal is to bring your question to God instead of demanding that ministry answer it for you. So many of us look to ministry success, attendance, recognition, productivity, or influence to provide something they were never intended to give. We quietly hope they will settle the questions in our souls. But ministry was never designed to carry that weight.

Only God can do that.

Heman understood something many leaders spend years learning. Honest faith is not the absence of struggle. Honest faith is continuing to seek God when the struggle remains. Psalm 88 closes without the resolution we often hope for, but it closes with a man who is still praying, still seeking, and still turning toward the Lord.

Perhaps that is exactly what some of us need to hear today.

You may still be carrying the burden. The answer may not have arrived. The situation may not look any different than it did yesterday. But if you are continuing to bring your whole heart before God, you are not failing. In fact, you are walking the same path as one of Scripture’s most faithful ministry leaders.

Sometimes the greatest act of leadership is not having all the answers. And sometimes the greatest act of worship is not singing a song of victory. Sometimes it is simply refusing to stop calling on the God of your salvation.

After seasons of celebration and busy ministry rhythms, it can be tempting to place our confidence in what we can accomplish. Yet Psalm 33 reminds us that hope is not found in our strength, our plans, or our abilities, but in the Lord Himself.

Before you lead today, remember that joy grows where trust lives. The God who has been faithful in the past remains faithful today. You do not have to manufacture confidence. You are free to place your hope in the One who never fails.

A prayer for today:
Lord, teach my heart to trust You more deeply. Let my hope rest in Your faithfulness as I serve and lead today. Amen.

Many are skilled musicians, planners, communicators, and organizers.

Very few of us were ever trained to understand what ministry does to us emotionally.

We learned how to prepare sermons, plan worship, rehearse choirs, manage volunteers, and lead teams. We learned how to show up faithfully, care for people, and carry responsibility with conviction.

What we were rarely taught is how to process the emotional weight of leadership—the internal impact of expectations, criticism, change, conflict, and constant care for others.

And yet, that unseen emotional world shapes far more of our ministry than we often realize.

A Familiar Ministry Story

Picture a worship or music leader who loves the church and takes their calling seriously.

They prepare thoughtfully.

They serve faithfully.

They want to do well and honor the Lord.

But over time, certain moments begin to linger:

• A passing comment after a service that stays longer than expected

• A season of change that brings more anxiety than excitement

• A meeting where direction feels unclear or support feels thin

• A growing sense of being unseen, misunderstood, or quietly discouraged

Outwardly, they keep going. Inwardly, something feels heavy. They may not have language for it, but their emotional world is trying to get their attention.

Ministry Is Inherently Emotional Work

Ministry leadership is not only spiritual and strategic, it is deeply emotional. We walk with people through grief and loss. We absorb disappointment and unmet expectations. We navigate conflict, comparison, and criticism. We lead through seasons where clarity feels thin and pressure feels thick. Often, we carry all of this silently.

Many ministry leaders do not leave because they lack calling, faithfulness, or gifting. They leave because the emotional toll of leadership goes unnamed, unprocessed, and unsupported.

It’s telling that the average tenure of worship and music leaders in local churches is often less than two years. There are many factors behind this reality, but emotional health is almost always part of the story.

When Pressure Reveals What’s Beneath the Surface

Leadership pressure has a way of revealing what is already inside us. Stress exposes our fears. Conflict highlights our sensitivities. Change brings our insecurities into sharper focus.

Under pressure, leaders may:

• Become defensive or withdrawn

• Over-function or attempt to control outcomes

• Avoid hard conversations

• Feel emotionally exhausted without knowing why

These reactions are not signs of weak faith or failed leadership. They are signals; indicators that something deeper is being stirred. Without emotional awareness, leaders often react to situations without understanding what is actually driving their response.

Emotional Health Is Not a Luxury in Ministry

Caring for emotional health is not about becoming self-focused. It is about becoming self-aware.

Healthy emotional awareness allows leaders to:

• Respond instead of react

• Separate criticism from identity

• Lead with clarity instead of fear

• Stay grounded during uncertainty

• Serve others without losing themselves

Emotionally healthy leaders tend to last longer, lead more graciously, and cultivate healthier teams and churches.

Paying Attention to What Matters Most

Emotional health begins not with fixing ourselves, but with paying attention.

Paying attention to the moments when we feel unsettled, threatened, or discouraged and asking gentle questions about what might be happening beneath the surface. Sometimes we react because we don’t feel safe. Sometimes because things feel uncertain or unstable. Sometimes because we’re longing to feel genuinely loved. Sometimes because we wonder if we truly belong or are wanted. Sometimes because success feels fragile or elusive. Sometimes because we question whether we are enough. And sometimes because we struggle to see our purpose clearly.

These are not weaknesses.

They are deeply human longings.

Ministry leadership has a way of touching every one of them. When leaders begin to notice which of these longings are most easily stirred within them, they often gain clarity—not only about their reactions, but about their leadership patterns, relationships, and inner life with God.

A Healthier Way to Lead

Here is the hopeful truth: the places where leadership feels most tender are often connected to where we care the most. When leaders begin to understand their emotional patterns and tend to their inner life with honesty and grace, something shifts. Leadership becomes steadier. Ministry becomes less reactive. Joy becomes more accessible. It is a healthier way to live and a more sustainable way to serve.

A Quiet Invitation

Emotional health does not begin with answers. It begins with awareness. Awareness of what lingers.

Of what drains us.

Of what unsettles us.

Of what brings both joy and weight.

Ministry leaders deserve space to understand their inner world just as intentionally as they plan their outer work. When leaders are emotionally aware, supported, and grounded, the church is stronger for it.
