The short film above was cut as a sample for a documentary that never got made, following the genesis, build, and burning of the Temple of Together at Burning Man in 2024.

We cut the two pieces in this post to raise the money. The money never came. The footage is still on a drive, but these two pieces are the only part of it that was ever finished, and neither has been public until now.

I head back out to the playa on Saturday. I’ve been wanting to use this space for work that never got its chance, and this is a place and project that means a great deal to me.

The temple

Most people know the Man. The effigy at the center of Black Rock City, raised every year and burned every year. Yang, celebratory, a spectacle with its own real power.

Fewer people know about the temple.

A temple goes up every year too, by a different lead artist with a vision of their own. Something like a hundred volunteers give a year of their lives to it. The fundraising, the design, the fabrication, all of it. Then it stands for one week, and the city adorns it with their prayers & remembrances.

Photographs. Letters. Objects that belonged to someone who is gone. People write on the walls until there is no wall left, only writing. They come to grieve, and to be near their grief in the company of strangers doing the same.

Our culture has very few places where it’s safe to grieve, and fewer still that are public.

Here grief is the point. Not hurried past, not managed. Just held.

There’s certainly a sort of gravity and heaviness in the space ~ but that’s not the only energy present. There’s also a quality of levity. A grace.

People laughing a few feet from people falling apart. Grief sits that close to joy because it comes from the same place. We grieve in proportion to how much we loved. So it isn’t really a monument to loss. It’s a room built for love, with somewhere for the energy to go.

Most of the world files Burning Man under party, and it is that. It’s also the most reliably transformational place I’ve visited, and I don’t think that’s separate from how hard it is out there. You get worn raw. The heat, the dust, the sleeplessness, the plain effort of keeping yourself alive. Things come up that stay buried in a comfortable life.

The temple is where I’ve spent more of my time at the burn than anywhere else. Not doing much. Watching. Staying porous. Willing to be moved.

And every year, without fail, something gives.

Caro

In 2024 a friend of mine from undergrad, Caroline Ghosn, was chosen as the lead artist for that years temple. She built the Temple of Together.

That changed what the year was for me. I was invited onto the small team filming the temple come to life, so I spent the week observing.

I don’t have words the level of artful dedication I experience. More than a year of planning. Over a month on the playa in conditions extremely inhospitable to life. The windstorms, the delays, the sleeplessness, the bodies breaking down, the constant troubleshooting. Caro’s surrendered leadership through all of it moved me more than I expected.

A front row seat to that was a gift.

Burn night

After more than a year of planning and more than a month of construction, the Temple of Together was opened to the city. Over the week it stood, thousands of people made their offerings.

This is the day Caro and her team prepare to burn it. The temple, and all of the artifacts left inside.

The Man burn is a party. Music, art cars, fireworks, a whole city roaring at a bonfire.

The temple burn is silent. Thousands of people sitting in the dark and nobody says anything. You hear the crack of the wood, gentle murmurs of awe from the crowd. That’s it.

In a lot of traditions fire is what carries prayer into the spirit realm, and that is exactly what it feels like out there. A year of someone’s life, and everything the city brought and left inside, tearing a hole into the darkness.

Much of my work as a filmmaker is unseen.

You give yourself to things that don’t get made, and anyone who has done documentary long enough has a drawer like this one. But there’s marrow in this little transmissions, and them sitting on a drive doing nothing for anyone seems worse than putting them somewhere imperfect. So here they are.

Hello, friends. It’s been a while.

Most of what I write here circles one desire: to do deep, meaningful creative work. To actually finish things, and ship them. And this past season, that practice worked a little too well. I designed my spring around producing three films, knowing the work would be all-encompassing. It was. I disappeared into the storytelling, and everything else fell off, including this space.

I’m writing now from Aspen, where those three films premiered this week. More on all of it below. But with the first breaths of air as I resurface, I want to re-establish a rhythm here and offer an invitation:

Since early April I’ve been inside one consuming piece of work: producing three short films profiling this year’s winners of the McNulty Prize, the award the McNulty Foundation gives with the Aspen Institute to extraordinary social impact leaders. Putting my craft in service of people doing good in the world has been my work for almost twenty years, and this year’s laureates are doing work that feels almost uncannily timely.

• Rudy Espinoza / Inclusive Action for the City (Los Angeles): a community lender getting capital to entrepreneurs the traditional financial system won’t touch, many of them immigrants building real businesses without access to a single traditional loan.

• Tom McDougall / 4P Foods (Virginia / Mid-Atlantic Region): a food hub knitting together regional food systems, so that a supply chain running three thousand miles from California isn’t the only way dinner reaches the East Coast.

  

• Anna Novosad / savED (Ukraine): rebuilding schools in a country where education itself has been made a target, often as classroom and bomb shelter in one structure.

  

April to July: three films, a month of production, a month for post, and around eighty deliverables once you count every cutdown, reel, and resize. More than a little blood went into getting it all out the door. The beauty and agony of deadlines.

And then, this week, the reward. The films premiered at the Resnick Aspen Action Forum, the annual gathering of the Aspen Global Leadership Network: several hundred Fellows from more than thirty countries, leaders across civil society, business, media, and the arts, who come to the mountains each summer to reflect and recommit to action. The McNulty Prize lives inside this community, which meant the laureates themselves were in the room as their stories screened. So was I.

Afterward, on the bus up the mountain, a leader I'd made a film for years ago told me everything that film had gone on to do — money raised, doors opened, things I never knew. We ship our work into the world and so rarely learn what it does out there. This week, for once, I did.

That’s rarer than it sounds. So much of our creative work lives online now, scattered into feeds, watched alone on phones between other things. To sit in a room of 400 social impact leaders from every corner of the planet and feel them take in the work together, in real time, is a different experience of your own making entirely. Humbling is the word I keep reaching for, and it doesn’t quite hold all of it.

The films are out in the world now, doing their work.

The physics of falling off

Here’s what I noticed about my silence here, and I suspect it will be familiar from your own practices: falling off has a physics.

Miss one mark and a little shame enters the system. The shame makes the next return slightly harder. The longer the gap runs, the more weight the return has to carry, until a simple post has to be a worthy post, an explanation, a comeback. The gap feeds itself. The kindest intervention is speed: come back sooner, before the silence hardens into a story about who you are.

Recommitting

So this post is me practicing what I think of as the practice of recommitment. When circumstances break an agreement you’ve made, with yourself or anyone else, you don’t blow through the mark silently. You renegotiate, out loud, ideally before the mark passes: new scope, new timeline, new commitment. Your word stays powerful precisely because you keep it honest.

I committed to a cadence here and let a client sprint crowd it out without renegotiating. That’s the slip, acknowledged. Here’s the recommitment:

• Monthly posts, aiming for twice a month when the season allows.

• A season of music, documented. The client chapter just closed, and this summer I’m giving my own art the diligence I’ve spent two decades giving client work: I’m making my debut album, starting with three days in my friend Ry’s studio next week. I’ll share field notes from the making here, the practice, the tools, the honest mess.

• More workshops, including more in the AI Gardener track. The signal has been loud and consistent: so many artists, entrepreneurs, and coaches want AI education that’s approachable, practical, and in service of your humanity rather than a replacement for it. More of that is coming.

And thank you. In the quiet months, a surprising number of you told me that the seasonal design workshops, the AI Gardener sessions, and these essays have actually mattered in your lives. That resolved something in me. This space stays fed.

Early in April, two friends & collaborators and I gathered in the Ojai valley for a seasonal immersion. Three days together. The first two were tight: each of us arrived with a draft seasonal design, and we critiqued each other’s with love and some sharpness. Then on the third afternoon we opened the door. Walked into the nearest watershed. Journeyed together. Landed hours later on a ridge at the old observatory, watching the last light move through the valley, a sparkle of mycelium still in our systems.

Something settled up there. Three of us, hands in the dirt. The design work had done what design work can do. The land did the rest.

Carson, Ian and I have been drifting in and out of configurations for more than a decade. Carson and I ran a creative incubator in a house on Alamo Square called Taohaus. That’s where we first coined the term Guildcraft. Ian and I spent the last two years exploring a creative studio together and sharing a lot of work. The three of us spent nearly two years on a storytelling project around NFTs. We’ve traded roles over and over: close collaborators, co-founders, friends across distance, co-creators again. The configurations change. The connection endures.

This was our spring gathering. The equinox had already passed, so we were running late on the season. But a pattern is only real when it’s practiced, and this was the first time we’d run the full shape of it together.

Who this might be for

If you’re a freelance artist, a healer, a multi-hyphenate maker, you probably already know the texture. Your third Zoom of the day. Everyone’s a thumbnail. The call ends and you’re alone with the weight of what you’re building.

Most of us in these fields work gig to gig. Our creative collaborators rotate with the project. Good work happens, sometimes great work, but the camaraderie rarely outlives the invoice. We are carrying a lot, mostly alone.

I wrote about this more fully last year in In the Belly of the Whale, notes from the Atlantic Crossing, where a team of us documented Earth One’s attempt to run six guilds on a chartered ship for twelve days. The dual commitment we named there, co-creative and co-developmental, is the bone structure underneath everything I’m about to describe. If this opens anything for you, go read that one next.

The short of it: so many of us have relationships where we make things together (often our workplace) or where we grow together (family, church, sangha), but rarely relationships where you embrace both qualities. And my feeling is, in the era we’re barreling towards, these sort of relationships might just be the most important.

What’s dissolving

Something is thinning out.

The workplace has been the organizing pattern of adult life for most of us: how we fund our days, who we see, what gives us a sense of contribution. The institutions holding that pattern in place are getting brittle quickly. AI is reshaping knowledge work and physical labor faster than most of us want to admit. The old religion of capitalism is running out of faith.

The artists and healers among us have been feeling this longer than most. Many of us eschewed the 9-to-5 years ago. Chose the freelance path, some by choice, some because the inside of the system had no place for what we cared about. We are, in some sense, the ones who’ve been living the coming condition longest. And many of us are tired.

What fills the gap?

For us, the honest answer is small crews. Practices of gathering. Shared rhythm. The things most of us used to get from religion or from a stable trade, and which most of us no longer have.

Why the word ‘guild’

Historically, guilds were about apprenticeship. How someone deepens into a craft over years, under the eye of people who have done the work longer. That developmental edge is still what I want.

I want to get better. Not just as a maker, but as a human. In my craft. In my ethical capacity. In what I’m here to offer. And I don’t think I get there alone. I want to be honed by my contemporaries. I want the slow witnessing that only comes from relationships that unfold over years. People who know me well enough to polish, to challenge, to shape.

That is not something you get from a single project. It’s something you invest in over time.

Both layers, held together

Communities without shared purpose tend to cannibalize themselves. When people come together only to come together, the bond eventually runs out of room. It needs something outside itself to be in service to.

Most workplaces go the other direction. All shared work, no attention to the humans doing it. Teams that ship together for years and never ask what’s alive, what’s in the way, what’s needed.

A guild is the practice of holding both.

Co-creative — actually making things together. Working. Risking. Finding the alignment between each person’s direction and what wants to emerge through the group.

Co-developmental — tending the humans doing the work. Witnessing the gifts. Calling each other out. Assuming the work itself is curricula for our awakening.

Neither alone. Co-creation without co-development is extraction. Co-development without co-creation is navel gazing. Both, held together, make the third thing.

The rhythms we’re practicing

We committed to four cadences this weekend.

Weekly momentum calls. Each of us surfaces the top three items moving our own legacy work forward this week. Light, consistent, specific.

Monthly master class. One of us teaches the others something we want to learn. Rotates.

Monthly open studio. A block for creative work, together in the room, or in parallel, depending on the week.

Seasonal immersions. Four times a year. A few days in a place. Each arrives with their own seasonal design. We critique each other’s hard. We walk into the land. We draft what’s ours to do together.

And a congregation once a year: a larger gathering where new crews can form and the circle widens.

We’re also rotating leadership month to month. Each of us carries the calls, drives the shared work, and gets to try on the qualities of stewardship.

A first pattern to share: opening protocol

This is the simple protocol we’ve used to open every call for years now. It’s expressive of the whole pattern, in about seven minutes.

Five to ten deep breaths. Then the gut check: what’s alive, what’s in the way. Sometimes a second pass: is there anything you need? Then spacetime: how long do we have, and what’s most important?

It is explicit permission for our presence and our humanity, in the torrent of tele-meetings that most of our days are made of. The breath is the bridge. The gut check invites the whole human into the room, not just the part that shows up for the task. The spacetime question is the container.

There is always an edge to asking for it. It interrupts the default of diving straight into what’s most pressing. And I still, sometimes, have to get over my own feeling of is this woo? when I ask a Zoom full of people to close their eyes for a minute and breathe. But every time I do, the call is different on the other side. This is something you can take with you. I’d encourage you to try.

The pattern has been traveling. At the start of this immersion, the three of us got on a call with the team at a wisdom-traditions publisher we're exploring a project with. We opened their call the same way we open our own: breath, gut check, spacetime. Congruent, of course, for a house that publishes in this lineage. But also: something takes root when a protocol begins to cross teams. In that small moment, we were actually building culture together.

It is remarkable how good it feels to be asked what you need.

If you can’t see your crew yet

If you read this and think I don’t have two or three people I could actually do this with, don’t worry about it. That was me for years.

The place to start is smaller. Bring a little more humanity into your next creative project. Open the call with breath. Ask someone what’s alive, what’s in the way. Treat the work as spiritual practice, because underneath, it is. There’s a version of guildcraft that can live inside a single collaboration.

And get curious. Look around at the relationships you already have some trust in. The friend you keep meaning to collaborate with. The peer whose work you quietly admire. The person who lights you up every time you talk. There’s often a guild-shaped thing tucked inside existing relationships that just hasn’t been named yet.

We want to help. Part of why we’re sharing these patterns is that we want more of this in our field. More small, devoted containers. More artists, healers and creators building together instead of gigging alone.

Guild OS

One thread we’ve been pulling on as a guild is whether the patterns and protocols we use ourselves — the rhythms, the openings, the seasonal designs, the way we hold each other’s work — could help others boot up something similar. We’re calling it guildOS for now. The cultural operating system underneath the crew. What we open with, how we close, how we make decisions, how we tend each other through the seasons.

It might become software someday. Right now it’s the human layer — the protocols and practices we’re starting to share more openly.

Ok, onwards. A dispatch from the season just ending.

The quiet forge

Part of the seasonal design practice is giving each season a name. Not a project title or a goal — something more like a felt sense of the season’s character, a compass heading you return to when things get noisy. I called my winter season The Quiet Forge: a season of cultivating conditions internally, building energy in preparation for more outward expression in the spring.

It ended up being more descriptive than I planned.

I’ve been quieter here than I’d like. This is the first post in three weeks. But the silence is part of the teaching.

One of the core tensions we navigate in creative work is the toggle between being inside the work (the making, the craft) and stepping into the meta (the reflection, the discussion of how we work). ( ritual ) creative lives somewhere between those two impulses. This winter, the balance tipped hard toward the making.

I fell down a rabbit hole I hadn’t anticipated: vibecoding. (Describing what you want to build in plain language and letting AI generate it, steering by feel rather than writing code line by line). I wrote about it in my last post, ✦ The new physics of building. Low barrier to entry, high demand for taste and intuition. When I heard Rick Rubin had weighed in on the phenomenon, I wasn’t surprised.

When I heard Rick Rubin had weighed in on the phenomenon, I wasn't surprised. In a 2023 60 Minutes interview, Anderson Cooper asked him if he could use a soundboard. "No," Rubin said. "I have no technical ability. And I know nothing about music." What artists pay him for, he explained, is his confidence in his taste and his ability to express what he feels. His entire career has been an exercise in exactly that — knowing what something should feel like before you know how to make it. He went deep enough to publish The Way of Code, an adaptation of the Tao Te Ching reframed for the age of AI. Wu wei for the builder. Effortless action.

That quality turns out to be precisely what this new era of software design calls for.

I jumped in this winter, building tools for my studio that I’d needed for my own practice. A whole different archetype came alive: the builder, the product designer. It swallowed my mornings. It ate my content schedule. It didn’t ask permission.

And here's the thing — the rabbit hole was unplanned, but it was perfectly aligned. It was The Quiet Forge in action. The rhythm of showing up here just slipped.

This is what makes seasonal design honest rather than aspirational. You design a season. Life happens inside that design. Some of it follows the plan. Some of it reveals something you didn’t know was coming.

A few things I’m carrying out of this winter:

The compass reading. I built a small practice into my morning using Claude Code — a way of working with AI that goes beyond conversation. You can write decisions and context directly into files that persist, building a kind of shared memory that the system reads from whenever you invoke it. I built a /boot command that I run every day when I sit down to work. It holds the full map of my seasonal design — the thematic, the focus areas, what I said yes to, what I said no to — alongside a running memory of what I’ve actually been doing over the past week. Each morning it takes a reading of both: the plan and what’s emerging. Not a to-do list. A compass.

The whole point of a compass is that you’ve already set a direction. You’ve done the work of choosing. And then each day, the question isn’t what should I do — it’s where’s the pull today, relative to the path?

That daily practice — planned design held against what’s actually alive — has been one of the quiet breakthroughs of this season.

The conscious no. I said no to really feeding music this winter. With the builder energy alive and a major project ramping up, there wasn’t room to give music a real season. And here’s what I’ve learned: the only way you can put something down with confidence is when you’ve sequenced what’s ahead. When you actually know you’ll be picking it back up.

I’m giving music its full season this summer. Knowing that lets me be here, building what this season asked me to build, without the low hum of guilt about what I’m not touching. That’s the gift of sequencing across seasons. You don’t have to hold everything at once. You just have to trust the rhythm.

The reset. My attunement to my seasonal design waxes and wanes. Some seasons I’m deeply inside it; others it drifts. But each solstice and equinox holds the door open. If something got away from you this winter, this is the most natural point to come back home. Not with judgment. With clarity.

The basic pattern

If you’ve never designed a season before, the basic pattern works at every nested level — the day, the week, the month, the season. The practice is the same at each scale:

Pause at the threshold. Harvest what came before — not just what you shipped, but what shifted, what surprised you. Survey what’s alive right now. What has your attention? What’s pulling? Design the upcoming season — your creative focus, your developmental edges, your relationships, your body. Give it a thematic title.

This isn’t abstracted planning. It’s emergent from what is, but not constrained by the momentum of what’s come before. That’s the whole point of stepping out briefly into the orchestrator role — the chance to pattern-interrupt what keeps taking over, and to actually feel the ways you’ve grown and transformed.

You don’t have to overthink it.

A notebook and an hour will do.

The workshop was built around practice, not theory. Three things we moved through together:

The Messy Input Method. The single biggest unlock for most people in the room. The idea that your most natural, unedited input — voice notes, stream of consciousness, fragmented thoughts — is actually better material for AI than the polished version you think it wants. This reframe alone changed how several people left thinking about these tools.

Master Prompt coaching. How to build a persistent context document that trains Claude on your voice, your work, your particular sensibility — so every conversation starts from your world, not from scratch. Think of it as giving Claude a thorough onboarding before it ever touches your work.

A live look at the actual workflow. Not a demo of features — a window into how I actually work. The tools I use daily, the rhythm of how I move between voice input and conversation and output, how I’ve been training my own AI collaborator over time.

The rest: development, scoping, proposals, budgets, client calls, relationships, admin. All the work that has to happen before the creative work can begin. You catch your own fish out here.

Most people picture a filmmaker behind a camera or inside an edit suite. And those exist. Those are the pockets you live for. But the reality of running an independent creative practice is that you spend the majority of your time somewhere else entirely: in the realm of admin, the organizational overhead, the parts of the work that feel like they have nothing to do with the work.

There’s a real resistance in that for most of us. We got into this to make things. The parts that feel furthest from making are the ones we’re most likely to delay, avoid, or do badly.

About six weeks ago, something shifted.

If you spend time on X or Twitter, you’ve seen the words: vibe-coding, Claude Code, Cursor, the breathless AGI-moment declarations. It reads like every other wave of tech hype. But underneath the noise, something actually happened. The tools crossed a line. Not in the way the evangelists describe it, not in the way the doomers fear it, but in a very plain, very specific way: AI can officially crush code. It can write it, debug it, refactor it, and scaffold whole working systems fast enough that the bottleneck is no longer syntax — it’s intention. And that matters specifically to people like us: people with deep domain knowledge and no engineering background, who’ve been able to see the tool that should exist but have never had a way to build it.

I’m a filmmaker and musician. No computer science background. Never taken a CS class. And yet in the last six weeks, I’ve built a production budgeting and scoping tool with a conversational agent at its center, a personal operating system for my creative practice, and I’m in the middle of building a documentary intelligence system for a feature film I’ve been making for years.

Not in months. In days.

But here’s the thing I want to say first, before I tell you what I built: the unlock isn’t that artists can code now. The unlock is that people who’ve spent years inside a domain finally have the means to build from that depth. No engineer is going to build what I built, because no engineer has spent twenty years feeling exactly where the friction lives inside independent film production. Domain expertise plus these tools is an unfair advantage that didn’t exist six months ago.

That’s the shift. Everything else follows from it.

How it started

The first experiment was small.

I had a pile of unpaid bills: paper invoices mixed with payment confirmations, no clear picture of what I owed or who to contact. So I described what I needed in a three-minute voice note, worked through it in Claude Cowork, and thirty minutes later had a custom interface that had sorted everything, extracted relevant contact details, and rank-ordered what remained.

Small thing. But it felt like a lightbulb moment. You mean I can actually build software now? I’m not supposed to be able to do this.

What I noticed: the reflex is the only real obstacle left. The technical barrier has genuinely collapsed. The assumption hasn’t caught up yet. People still feel like this isn’t for them. That feeling, more than any actual difficulty, is what’s standing in the way.

For me, it woke something that had been waiting. I’ve always been a systems thinker: someone who could see the tool that should exist but had no path to build it. What I didn’t expect was for these tools to dissolve that frustration entirely. That part of me suddenly had a wand.

I stopped seeing friction as annoyance and started seeing it as invitation.

Lux: and what Theo taught me

Lux is the first thing I built that actually changed my day-to-day.

The problem it solves sits right at the center of that many-hat-wearing reality: scoping a project, building a budget, translating all of it into a proposal and contract you can actually send. One of the most time-consuming parts of running a production company — and one of the most resistant to feeling like creative work. You’re wrestling with spreadsheets, writing statements of work, trying to hold the full complexity of a project in your head while converting it into something a client can act from.

What I wanted was a producer at the table. Someone who already understood the project, who could help me think through tradeoffs, who could draft the numbers as the thinking evolved.

So I started building it. Not just a prettier spreadsheet: an AI-native environment where you could talk through the budget as it evolved. Describe the scope. Walk through the tradeoffs. Have it update in real time as the conversation changed.

And then Theo showed up.

Theo is the agent at the center of Lux. Named, given a visual identity (bookish glasses, a series of SVG animations for different thinking states: processing, generating, waiting), built to function as a persistent producer who understands your whole project. The vision that’s been alive in me for a year and a half: a system that doesn’t forget, that holds the admin and producerial tedium so the filmmaker can hold the story.

Here’s what Theo can actually do. You paste in a transcript from a scoping or discovery call. Answer a few questions. Theo generates a draft budget based on industry standards and your specifics, and one-shots a statement of work or proposal. The things that used to eat days of production overhead, compressed into a conversation.

No engineer builds that. Not with that particular sensitivity to where the friction lives, not with that specific understanding of what a filmmaker actually needs from a scoping call. I built it because I’ve lived it. I know what it costs to do this work without that kind of support.

And now I’m thinking seriously about shipping it (let me know if you want to be among the first beta testers!).

The wall gets thinner

There are two paths to creative legacy. One runs through craft: a body of work unmistakably yours. The other runs through building — a product, organization or institution imbued with your sensibility that solves something real for people who share your domain.

For most of history, those paths required different lives. Different people.

I don’t think that’s true anymore.

Not because the tension between artist and builder has disappeared — it hasn’t, and I’m not sure it should — but because the distance between impulse and form has collapsed so dramatically that both can live not only in the same person, but in the same day.

Build the tool before lunch. Hold the camera after.

The skills that make someone a good artist are exactly the skills this kind of building requires. The listening. The sensitivity to what’s not working. The ability to articulate what a thing wants to become. The willingness to stay with something through many iterations before it finds its form.

We’ve been training for this. We just didn’t know the instrument was coming.

If you want to start: pick one friction point. Something you’ve been working around for months inside your own domain. Ask what the tool would actually do if it existed.

That description is the beginning.

And you’re more prepared to build it than you think.

For most of technological history, software leverage required one of two things: either the capital to hire engineers, or the particular cognitive style that makes someone a coder. Linear thinking. Singular focus. Comfort with abstraction.

These aren’t bad qualities. But they’re a specific slice of human capacity. And the people who had them — or could afford to hire them — have been the ones shaping the tools the rest of us use.

That’s shifting now. Fast.

We’re entering an era where individuals who’ve spent years cultivating entirely different capacities — sensitivity, intuition, ethical discernment, the ability to care deeply — can suddenly access leverage that was previously reserved for a select few.

The artists. The healers. The coaches and therapists. The people who’ve been doing inner work while others optimized for scale.

And here’s what I keep noticing: they’re the ones most reluctant to pick up these tools.

I keep finding myself in the same conversation. At dinner with filmmaker friends. Over coffee with people who work in the healing arts.

The topic drifts toward AI, and something happens. There’s curiosity — but it comes out almost like a confession. “I’ve actually been going pretty deep with ChatGPT...” Said quietly, like admitting to a guilty pleasure. Or a betrayal.

I get the hesitation. The slop flooding the feeds. The legitimate concerns about displacement, about artists losing work to tools trained on their own creations. The environmental critique. And underneath it all: the feeling that if the work comes easier, it must be worth less. That relying on these tools is somehow selling out.

But I’m starting to wonder what we’re leaving on the table by ceding this territory.

The people flooding the field with noise aren’t pausing to consider what they’re creating conditions for. They’re optimizing for engagement, for efficiency, for scale. They’re missing meaning entirely.

Meanwhile, the people with the most refined sensitivity — the ones who can actually feel the difference between signal and noise — are sitting this out. Often from a sense of moral clarity: These tools are harmful. I don’t understand them. Engaging would compromise my integrity.

I want to make the opposite case.

If you’ve done the inner work — if you’ve cultivated ethical discernment, care, attunement to what serves life — you may have a responsibility to engage. Not despite your values, but because of them. The tools will be shaped by whoever uses them. The question is whether that shaping includes people who’ve developed the capacity to ask: What are we creating conditions for?

What happens when the artists and healers finally pick up these tools? Not the CEOs optimizing for quarterly returns. Not the growth hackers A/B testing engagement. But the people who’ve developed the capacity to sense what a room needs, to recognize what’s not being said, to feel when something’s off even if they can’t articulate why.

That’s the question I’m living into.

Sculptors versus gardeners

Part of the resistance, I think, is that we’re working with the wrong metaphor.

The dominant image of the artist is the sculptor. Chisel to marble. Every stroke deliberate, personal, irreversible. The vision exists fully-formed in your head, and your job is to carve away everything that isn’t it. Solitary genius, unmediated expression.

If that’s your model, AI feels like cheating. Or replacement. Or surrender.

But Dan Shipper offers a distinction that’s reframed everything for me: the sculptor versus the gardener.

The gardener works differently. She creates conditions. She tends. She supervises what wants to emerge. Her first question isn’t “What do I want to make?” It’s “What wants to grow here? What does this soil need?”

There’s a listening quality to it. The gardener is attuned to something beyond her own intention. She calibrates to the needs of the ecosystem rather than imposing her vision onto it.

Working with AI, I’ve discovered we’re learning to be gardeners. The gardener’s mastery is in creating conditions, reading emergence, making judgments about what to tend and what to prune.

Where creativity actually lives

This is where it gets uncomfortable for those of us who built our creative identities around the sculptor model.

If AI can help organize our thoughts, structure our arguments, even draft prose in our direction — where does that leave us? What makes the work ours?

The answer: the parts that were always most essential.

// Vision. What are we actually trying to create? What do we see that others don’t?

// Taste. What’s good? What’s sufficient? What’s true? AI can generate options. It cannot know which option is right for this piece, this audience, this moment.

// Attunement. Can we sense what the work needs? Can we feel when something’s off, even if we can’t articulate why?

// Care. Do we give a damn? Does it serve life?

These capacities were always what separated meaningful work from noise. The sculptor had them too, bundled with manual skills. Now they’re being unbundled.

And here’s what strikes me: the artists and healers sitting on the sidelines? They’ve spent years developing exactly these capacities. Vision, taste, attunement, care — this is their territory.

The people who’ve historically had access to technological leverage often optimized for different things. Speed. Scale. Efficiency. Not bad things, but not the full picture of what makes work meaningful.

What we’re witnessing is the democratization of leverage to people who’ve been cultivating the capacities that leverage most needs.

The management problem

Here’s an uncomfortable truth: working with AI well means becoming a kind of manager. And most artists have no training in management — or active disdain for it.

Good managers articulate what they want. They break down complex projects into subtasks. They understand the strengths and limitations of their team. They know when to micromanage and when to step back.

These skills translate directly to AI. Can you clearly describe your intent? Do you understand what this model is good at and where it fails? Can you give useful feedback?

For many artists, delegation feels like betrayal. “Who am I if I’m not the one holding the brush?”

You’re the one holding the vision.

The brush was always in service of something larger. What happens when you can achieve the same end through a different means — one that removes certain friction while introducing new challenges?

You develop the intuitive sense a gardener has with different plants. When to push, when to pull back, when to trust the process, when to intervene. You can’t learn this from tutorials. You have to get your hands in the soil.

I started with ChatGPT, but something felt off about the voice. Too eager to please. Then I discovered Claude. The conversations felt more human. Less performative. More willing to push back or sit in uncertainty. Each platform has its own personality, its own strengths. You develop a feel for which tool serves which kind of thinking. This only comes through direct experimentation.

The stewardship question

Creativity was always collaborative. The painter collaborates with pigment and canvas. The writer with language itself — something inherited, shaped by countless voices before us. We’ve never been solitary geniuses creating from nothing.

Working with AI as a gardener makes this responsibility more visible: What are we creating conditions for? What is worthy of tending?

The people who’ve spent years asking these questions — the artists, the healers, the contemplatives — aren’t liabilities in the AI moment.

They’re exactly what this moment needs.

Why this matters

Here’s what I’ve observed: most creative people aren’t lacking discipline. They’re lacking containers.

You can be brilliant, motivated, and still feel like you’re failing because you’re trying to give full attention to everything at once. Client work, personal projects, health, relationships, rest. All competing for the same finite hours. The to-do list grows faster than you can move through it. You touch five things by noon and finish none of them.

Then you feel scattered. Exhausted. Like you’re not actually capable of deep work, when really you’re just distributing your energy across too many domains at once.

Instead of quarters (arbitrary corporate divisions), you work with seasons. Each has its own energetics. Spring is emergence. Summer is full expression. Autumn is harvest and refinement. Winter is rest and vision.

At each threshold, you pause. You harvest what’s complete. You design what wants to emerge next. You calendar it. You commit to it. Then you trust the rhythm.

What shifts:

You stop trying to do everything at once. You have clarity on what has your attention this season.

Your nervous system settles. When you know your focus for the next three months, you can actually relax.

You access deeper work. Because you’re not constantly context-switching, you can drop into the flow states where real creative work happens.

The channel opens. When you complete and ship one project, it creates negative space that pulls the next one forward.

You actually build something. Not through heroic all-nighters, but through consistent devotion to the rhythm.

This is what I mean by designing better. Not optimizing harder. Designing the containers in which your creativity can actually breathe.

I ran an open studio workshop for paid subscribers in December. We spent ninety minutes together: harvesting fall, designing winter, creating seasonal documents in real time.

I’m writing this from Montreal, bone-chilling cold and snow flurries outside, twenty-four hours before I enter a five-day meditation retreat.

I’ll be at the Art of Living ashram outside Montreal for a retreat called Sanyam II—a deep dive into an esoteric, sutra-based meditation practice rooted in the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Taking time for a retreat near the end of the year has become something of a ritual for me: stepping away from the noise, the family gatherings, the consumerist frenzy of the holidays, and instead turning inward.

Not because I’m against celebration or time with family (I’ve had good family time the last few months). But I’ve recognized that the greatest gift I can give myself as I head into a new year is this kind of recalibration. A return to source.

For nearly twenty years, my root teacher has been Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, a master in the Vedic tradition who’s made ancient wisdom accessible to Western minds like mine. As I’ve been preparing for the retreat, I’ve been revisiting old commentaries of Gurudev’s on the Sutras, and was struck with just how relevant they are—not only for spiritual practice, but for our creative practice.

This feels especially timely. We just wrapped the Seasonal Design workshop for paid subscribers—an exercise in designing the next three months with intention. (I’ll be sending the full framework to paid subscribers next week—not too late to jump in.) And we’re days away from that annual cascade of New Year’s resolutions. It’s the perfect moment to reconsider what discipline actually is, and why most of our promises to ourselves fail.

The very first line of the Yoga Sutras opens with:

“Atha yoga anushasanam.”

Now, the discipline of yoga.

That single word—discipline—unlocks something most of us miss about what it actually takes to make the work that matters.

Two kinds of rules

In Sanskrit, there are two words for discipline:

Shasana—the rules society places on us. Speed limits. Tax deadlines. The client brief. Religious doctrine. The algorithm’s demands. External impositions we follow to function in the world.

Anushasana—the discipline we take on ourselves. Self-chosen. Self-imposed. Because we believe it will yield fruit worth the effort.

The Yoga Sutras use the second word deliberately.

Yoga is not an imposition. It’s a discipline you choose because you recognize something: that the fruit you’re after—the depth of presence you’re here to cultivate, the creative legacy you’re here to build—requires commitment beyond what feels immediately gratifying.

This distinction is subtle and powerful.

We’re so conditioned by shasana—by meeting external expectations, hitting deliverables, optimizing for metrics—that we’ve forgotten how to practice anushasana. The discipline that comes from within. The commitment we make to our own “Self” (with a capital S), inclusive both of our spiritual growth & that which the universe seeks to create through us (our creative vision). Not because anyone’s demanding it, but because we’ve chosen it.

In fact, this speaks almost directly to the reason ( ritual ) creative exists and the inquiry that’s alive here:

What is the practice of returning to, and creating from, our essence?

How do we generate creative work not out of scarcity or demand, but out of the endless inner well?

When discipline becomes devotion

Gurudev’s commentary on this sutra goes deeper.

He asks: Why is discipline needed at all?

His answer: “Discipline is needed when some action or behavior isn’t immediately charming but will eventually yield a fruit that’s desirable.”

If you’re famished and someone offers you water, you don’t need discipline to drink. Your thirst does the work. The action meets an immediate need.

But if you’re trying to hydrate beyond thirst—to build a practice of drinking water throughout the day for long-term vitality—you need discipline. Because you’re drinking even when you don’t want to, in service of a future state.

Most of what matters in creative work falls into this second category.

Showing up to the blank page when you’d rather scroll. Protecting two 90-minute blocks for deep work when urgent emails are piling up. Finishing the draft and shipping it even when it doesn’t feel “ready.”

None of this is immediately charming. All of it requires discipline.

But here’s where it gets interesting: discipline, practiced with devotion and respect, transforms into something else entirely.

The Sutras say: “Satu dirga kala nairantarya satkara sevitu dridha bhumi.”

Practice must be done for a long time, uninterruptedly, with devotion and honor. Only then does it become well-founded in you.

Not just practiced. Honored.

This is the shift that matters. When you honor your practice—when you approach your creative work with the same reverence you’d bring to any sacred commitment—the discipline stops feeling like grinding. It becomes a devotional act.

The seer and the scenery

The Yoga Sutras map something the yogis discovered thousands of years ago: the mind has five modulations, five vrittis, five ways it gets pulled around by experience.

Pramana: we want proof for everything.

Viparyaya: we form wrong perceptions.

Vikalpa: we imagine things that don’t exist.

Nidra: we sleep.

Smriti: we remember.

All of this is fine. These modulations aren’t the enemy.

But when we’re lost in them, when we’re so absorbed in the drishya (the scenery) that we forget the drashtri (the seer), we lose our center.

The creative equivalent: you’re so caught up in checking metrics, managing your brand, consuming other people’s content, worrying about reception, that you forget why you’re creating in the first place. You’ve lost yourself in the scene.

Yoga, and by extension a creative practice rooted in yoga, is about having a say over these modulations. Not eliminating them. But not being owned by them either.

It’s about coming back to the seer. The one who witnesses. The “I am” underneath all the roles and identities and anxieties.

The part of you that knows why this work matters. But also the part of you from which the work emerges in the first place (the muse, the inner well).

This is the paradox the Sutras reveal: to bring something from the immaterial into form, to create anything meaningful in the world, you need to spend time in the immaterial. In pure awareness. In silence.

You can’t stay lost in the scenery if you want to make work that’s alive.

Practice and dispassion

The Sutras name two practices that stabilize you in the seer:

Abhyasa—practice. The effort to stay present, to return to awareness again and again.

Vairagya—dispassion. Not indifference, but freedom from craving and aversion.

Both are necessary.

Practice without dispassion becomes grinding. You’re showing up, but you’re still being yanked around by your attachment to outcomes, your fear of judgment, your craving for validation.

Dispassion without practice is just philosophy. You understand the principle but haven’t built the capacity to actually live it.

Together, they create something powerful.

You practice staying centered. And you let go of the pull of the scenery—the notifications, the metrics, the comparison, the need for immediate gratification.

What emerges is creative sovereignty. The capacity to make work because it’s yours to make, not because it meets some external standard or scratches an immediate itch.

The fruit

So what’s the fruit of this discipline?

The Sutras would say: you get established in your true nature. In the seer. In the “I am” that precedes all identity.

But let’s bring this back to creative work specifically.

The fruit isn’t just the external legacy—the body of work you leave behind, the impact you make, the people you move.

Though that matters.

The fruit is also the felt experience of creating from a centered place.

Discovering what you’re capable of. Being surprised by your own growth. Feeling connected to something larger than yourself. Knowing your life energy was used meaningfully.

Feeling seen in your dimensionality. Belonging to a community of makers. Coming to know yourself as a purveyor of beauty, not just a producer of content.

This is why the discipline matters.

Not because you should be disciplined. Not because productivity culture says so.

But because the work you’re actually here to create—the legacy that only you can bring through—requires a commitment that comes from within.

It requires anushasana. Self-chosen discipline. Practice honored as devotional act.

The invitation

Here’s what I’m learning as I prepare to enter this retreat:

The most powerful creative practice isn’t the one imposed on you by deadlines or algorithms or client expectations.

It’s the one you choose for yourself. The discipline you take on because you’ve recognized: this matters. This is mine to tend. This fruit is worth the effort.

And when you practice it uninterruptedly—even just a few minutes a day—with honor and devotion, something shifts.

You’re no longer grinding. You’re no longer performing.

You’re creating from the seer, not lost in the scenery.

You’re established in your center, even as you bring work into form.

This is the creative sovereignty the Yoga Sutras point toward. Not as abstract philosophy, but as lived practice.

The question isn’t whether you’re disciplined enough.

The question is: What discipline have you chosen for yourself? And are you honoring it as sacred?

May your new year be rich with the fruit of your practice.

The light is thin now. On the east end of Ojai, the sun dips behind the mountains earlier each day, casting long, blue shadows across the oaks. We’re approaching the winter solstice—the longest night, the pivot point where the year turns back toward the light.

It’s a natural threshold. A time to pause, to look at what’s complete, and to feel into what wants to emerge next.

Many of us orient to this shift through the lens of New Year’s resolutions—that frenzied January impulse to regroup and recommit. But that once-a-year planning cycle has always felt inconsistent to me. We set ambitious targets in the cold of winter, lose momentum by the thaw of March, and arrive at December wondering where the year went.

What if we oriented differently?

What if, instead of forcing our creative work into arbitrary calendar divisions, we let ourselves be guided by something older—Earth’s actual rhythms?

For the past few years, I’ve been experimenting with seasonal design. Not as a spiritual bypassing of practical planning, but as a more congruent way to think about creative containers, energy allocation, and what to prioritize when.

The creative process is cyclical, not linear

Some of the greatest works of art take years to craft, evolve, come to fruition. But that doesn’t mean the artist worked on the piece every day.

When we look across history and at patterns of great artists, the constant is seasonality. Periods of intensive focus on a particular work. Periods of reset. Or even distraction, diversion.

Author Nancy Stohlman describes it this way:

Periods of furious creation are followed by a slowing down as we recuperate. And those fallow periods are followed by new sparks and new creative discoveries…if we remain patient and trust the process.

The key is trusting the cycle—not fighting it.

Creative work is cyclical in nature. There are periods of intensity and focus, periods where things need to lie fallow. This is the natural way of the creative process. It’s worth designing for.

Why seasons, not quarters

We all know the feeling of dancing slightly out of sync with the rhythm of the music and how disorienting it can be.

This is what it’s like when your creative rhythm is misaligned with the structure you’re trying to work within. Seasonal design is about tuning your rhythm to celestial bodies and your own internal creative rhythm.

The solstices and equinoxes mark the Earth's relationship to the sun—the longest and shortest days, the moments of perfect balance between light and dark. Cultures across history have gathered at these thresholds to mark transitions, honor cycles, and recalibrate. There's something in us that responds to these turnings. We're not separate from these rhythms—we're made of them.

I wrote recently about rhythm over to-do lists — how designing your time in nested containers (annual → seasonal → weekly → daily) lets you actually access deep work instead of staying scattered. Seasonal design is the macro layer of that architecture.

You can have the perfect daily schedule, but if you’re trying to hold fourteen priorities across multiple seasons simultaneously, you’ll still drown. The seasonal frame gives permission to sequence: this priority this season, that priority next season.

Here’s why this matters for creative entrepreneurs: In corporate environments, there’s built-in structure around goal setting and planning (Q1 > Q2 > Q3 > Q4). As a creative entrepreneur without that infrastructure, you need to architect your own progression. Otherwise you surrender to things happening whenever they happen—scattered, reactive, perpetually distributed.

The biggest unlock of seasonal design: you can relax. You know your focus for the season. You’re not trying to give full attention to everything at once. The anxiety of “all at once” dissolves.

Working with the grain

To be clear: you don’t need to align your creative work with seasonal energetics for this practice to work. Sometimes a film needs to be edited in winter. Sometimes an album needs to be recorded in fall. The practice of pausing at solstices and equinoxes to harvest and design is valuable regardless.

But as my practice has deepened, I’ve gotten more curious about what happens when I do attune to each season’s distinct energy:

Spring is emergence. The time for planting new seeds, research and ideation. Spring asks: What wants to be born?

Summer is full expression. Deep creative immersion. The long days support intensive work—finishing the film, recording the album, writing the manuscript. Summer asks: What’s ready to bloom?

Fall is harvest. Bringing work into the world, launching, sharing, closing loops. Fall asks: What’s ready to ship?

Winter is rest and vision. The fallow time. Tending the inner well, reflection, dreaming what’s next without forcing it into form yet. Winter asks: What needs to compost?

Here’s what I’ve discovered as a multi-hyphenate: Having multiple projects alive but in different stages is actually energizing. One project gets full focus this season while another hibernates in the background—still humming, still somehow working on itself. I’ll have unexpected insights during a film project’s “off season” that completely transform my approach when I return to it. The documentary I’m not actively editing. The song that’s resting. The essay that needs to sit.

Seasonal design doesn’t mean abandoning projects. It means giving each one the concentrated attention it deserves when its season arrives, while trusting the others to compost and evolve in the dark.

The practice

Over the last few years, I’ve done different versions of this seasonal reflection and planning—journaling, setting OKRs with my studio partner Ian, quiet walks to process what wants to close and what wants to open.

But about a year and a half ago, I started creating something more formal: an orienting document for each season. A kind of handbook to support living into the potential of that three-month window.

I give each season a name. Not as branding, but as a north star. A phrase I can return to when decisions get muddy.

My last few seasons:

• Spring 2025: “roots & fire”

• Summer 2025: “embodied emergence”

• Fall 2025: “the loving field”

Here’s what matters: these documents aren’t just project planning. They’re tracking my own development and growth. Where are my current edges? What’s challenging me? What support do I need? What’s ready to be transformed?

The creative work I choose to focus on each season is actually the container for deeper personal development. The film project or the album isn’t the point—it’s the vehicle. What I’m really designing for is: How do I create a supportive environment for my own becoming inside the structure of the creative work I’m doing?

That’s what makes this different from a typical goal-setting framework. The projects serve the becoming, not the other way around.

Each season doc includes: the thematic essence, focus areas, protected rhythms, what success looks like, edges I’m working with, support structures I’m building, and truths to keep close.

I take 90 minutes—sometimes walking in the hills around Ojai, sometimes sitting with tea—and record a voice note. I think out loud about everything in my creative field:

What just completed? What wants to close? What’s asking for attention? What felt aligned? What drained me? What do I want more of? What wants to emerge? Where’s the edge of my growth currently? What’s dying for my attention?

It’s messy. Circular. Full of tangents and false starts. That’s the point. I’m not trying to produce a clean document—I’m letting my intuition speak without the rational mind editing in real time.

Then I use AI to help synthesize the voice note into a structured seasonal design doc. Not to write it for me, but to organize the thinking: themes, priorities, what wants to close, what wants to open, the rhythm I’m committing to.

Then I refine it in my own voice. Make it real. Put it in my calendar. Share it with my partner and collaborators so they know what I’m holding.

That’s the practice. Voice note → AI synthesis → refinement.

Simple. Repeatable. Grounded in what’s actually alive rather than what I think should be alive.

Of course, you don’t need to use AI at all in your process. A lined notebook and a pen will do.

Whatever supports you in making the time & building your own map.

What this isn’t

This isn’t productivity optimization.

I’m not trying to get more done. I’m trying to do less, more deeply. To protect what matters from the tyranny of everything else.

This practice doesn’t give you momentum. It gives you alignment—the feeling of working on things that match where your creative energy actually wants to move. And when you have that alignment, momentum follows naturally.

It’s the most surgical diagnosis of creative suffering I’ve encountered. We get into this work because we have good taste. We can hear the thing that doesn’t exist yet. But for years, sometimes decades, what we actually make falls short.

It has ambition. It has flashes of what we’re reaching for. But it doesn’t land.

And because our taste is so good, we know exactly how far short it falls. We can hear the distance between the melody in our head and the one struggling to come to life in our studio. We can feel the chasm between the vision and the draft.

That gap will swallow you if you let it.

Living in The Gap right now

As I type, I’m in it. ( ritual ) creative is still being born.

I’m doing the work. The essays ship. The systems are booting up. And yet, the gap between vision and execution feels like physical weight.

Ira Glass names it perfectly:

“The only way to close the gap is to do a huge volume of work… It’s only by going through a volume of work that you’ll catch up and close that gap.”

He’s right. We need the reps.

But here’s the harder question: How do you survive doing a huge volume of work when your vision outstrips your execution?

For years, I thought the answer was “head down, execute.” That’s not it. It’s about how we frame the work.

The trap: “self-expression” makes The Gap unbearable

When we frame creativity as self-expression, the work becomes a referendum on identity.

A mediocre draft means you are mediocre.
Work that falls short means you are not enough.
Silence after you ship means nobody cares.

The stakes become existential. Rick Rubin says it this way:

“A work of art is a reflection of the artist at a given moment in time. It is not the artist.”

When you frame work as self-expression, you’re saying: If this work is rejected, I am rejected.

No wonder The Gap feels unbearable.

The reframe: creation as self-discovery

There’s a more survivable frame: creativity as self-discovery.

You’re not creating to express what you already know. You’re creating to discover what you don’t yet know.

The frame shifts from “I know myself, therefore I create” to “I create, therefore I get to know myself.”

The questions change:

• Am I good enough?

• What can this teach me?

What I’m discovering in real time

I’m in the middle of this reframe with ( ritual ) creative.

I committed to weekly shipping. MSB—Minimum Shippable Beauty—as the standard. And here’s what’s brutal: I can hear exactly how far my work falls short of what I’m reaching for. The vision is clear. The execution? Still finding its way.

But when I ask what I’m discovering about myself as an artist? Things shift.

I’m discovering that shipping (and promoting) my own work is existential in ways client work never was. For clients, I deliver flawlessly because it doesn’t threaten my identity. For my own work? I can hear every compromise, every place I didn’t quite nail it. The Gap is undeniable.

I’m discovering the frameworks emerge through shipping, not before it. I had perspectives around MSB, but the framework crystallized only when I committed to the post. The act of making clarifies the thinking. Recursive.

I’m discovering the inner voice has a thousand reasons to quit. This isn’t ready. You haven’t found your voice yet. Maybe start a different project. Some of that may be true. But the commitment to ship regularly is sacred. And miraculously, you rise to the occasion.

None of these discoveries close The Gap. My taste is still ahead of my execution. But I’m building something more important than perfect work: my capacity to keep making despite The Gap.

The shadow work nobody mentions

Here’s what nobody tells you: The creative process is a dredging.

You commit to showing up regularly, and all your patterns surface. The perfectionism. The people-pleasing. The fear of judgment. This is the mud.

The deadline forces you to confront everything you’ve been avoiding.

This is where you realize: You need a bigger container than hustle alone.

Art as spiritual practice

Here is where the spiritual dimension becomes essential.

Contemplative traditions point to a crucial distinction: the small self that gets crushed by The Gap, and the spacious awareness that can hold it all.

Small self: Your ego. Your identity. Your wounds. The part that’s terrified The Gap means you’re not enough. The voice that says maybe you should quit.

Spacious awareness: The witnessing presence underneath. The part that can observe fear without being consumed by it. The loving space that holds everything without collapsing.

Advaita Vedanta calls this Atman—the true Self that is ultimately inseparable from everything. Buddhism points to it differently, emphasizing the emptiness of even the witness. But both traditions offer the same practical insight: you are vaster than your fear.

If you try to navigate The Gap from small self alone, you’ll get crushed. The judgment is too heavy. The fear too loud.

But if you can rest in spacious awareness—even briefly—you create room for the mess. You can watch your fear of judgment without being the fear. You can hold the gap between your taste and your current capacity without making it mean you’re not enough.

Pema Chödrön writes in When Things Fall Apart:

“We think that the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.”

To keep creating despite The Gap, you have to practice expanding beyond the small self that can’t tolerate discomfort.

Self-discovery is the path that makes The Gap survivable.
Self-realization is the container that makes self-discovery possible.
Creativity is the practice that forces you to walk this path whether you intended to or not.

The invitation

If you’ve been stuck in The Gap—waiting to feel ready, waiting for your work to be good enough—consider this:

The Gap isn’t the problem. How you’re relating to The Gap is the problem.

You don’t need to close The Gap to keep creating. You need to build your capacity to create despite The Gap.

That’s the work. Not making better art. Becoming the kind of person who can hold what making art dredges up.

The Gap never closes completely. Your taste will always evolve ahead of your capacity.

But you can become vast enough to hold it all.

This is the first audio transmission from ( ritual ) creative (!!)

A spoken version of the longform Substack essay I launched with a few weeks ago called “Minimum Shippable Beauty (MSB)”, complete with an original score and, at the very end, an unreleased track of mine called New Horizon.

The essay explores a pattern most creators know intimately: holding finished work hostage to the feeling of “not quite ready.” What if that resistance isn’t a warning to keep polishing—but a threshold asking you to step through?

It’s both an investigation of why we delay shipping vulnerable work, and the origin story of why ( ritual ) creative exists at all.

It’s a few days later than my usual Friday rhythm, and there’s something to learn in that.

I’ve been feeling the weight of the commitment I made weeks ago: weekly essays, indefinitely? The excitement of launch has worn off. The messy middle has arrived. And I’m sitting in the question: what’s the sustainable cadence here? What serves the work AND my capacity?

This tension between the sketchbook (trying new things, offering myself grace) and the seeds of a business (maintaining rhythm, building trust) is the Artist ↔ Entrepreneur polarity I wrote about recently. There’s no resolution to this tension. Just practice in learning to navigate it.

So here’s what happened: I wanted audio. Audio is much more native to me as a filmmaker and musician. But it also adds layers of production and complexity. What started simple—”I’ll just record a spoken version”—predictably ballooned. Maybe it should have a score and sound design? And maybe with my own original music? Scope creep, the creative’s familiar companion, showed up right on schedule.

But it’s also a beautiful thing when it’s emerging from excitement around what’s possible rather than a feeling of endlessly needling at “it’s not quite enough.” And damn, it’s fun (and a lot of work) to shape an audio transmission like this.

I’m learning a ton about workflow:

• How to best translate completed written essays into to spoken form

• What programs to use—Ableton? Or my more native Premiere for audio edits and transcriptions?

• How do I pull unfinished musical ideas in from other Ableton sessions?

• Am I going to rerecord for vocal cracks and delivery, or let it be? What about comprehensibility challenges in this new medium?

Ultimately my M.S.B. line was: I’m shipping this week, even if it’s a few days late. I’m not going to needle my recorded voice endlessly or worry too much about the comprehensibility of the whole flow. I’ll apply those learnings to the next version. But I did lean in a bit on the score and sound design, which was fun.

It took a few days longer than anticipated, but the plane has landed.

Why audio, why now

As much as I’m enjoying Substack, even I struggle with reading long-form essays. Audio and video have always been part of the vision for what ( ritual ) creative could become. But in the spirit of MSB, I wanted to keep things simple to start—just writing, just shipping.

And yet. Here we are.

The work wants what it wants. And sometimes the minimum shippable beauty for one piece is different than another. This one wanted sound.

What I’m learning about sustainable rhythm

The honest truth: I don’t know yet what the right cadence is. Whether audio becomes a regular feature or an occasional experiment. Whether weekly essays is the rhythm that serves this work long-term, or whether something else wants to emerge.

I’m doing my best to hold two truths at once:

The voice that says: You’re trying something new. Shipping this a few days late is fine. Give yourself grace. This is the messy middle every creator moves through.

And the voice that says: Keep the rhythm. Don’t let your guard down. Consistency builds trust. The container matters.

Both are true. Neither resolves the other.

What I’m learning: committing to ship creative work often means living in a state of perpetual tension. You’re wrestling something from the unseen realm inside you into the world, in whatever cracks of time exist for your creative practice. While also trying to build something sustainable. While also maintaining the other work that pays the bills.

There’s no clean answer. Just the practice of showing up to the question.

The dual purpose tension

I think this discomfort I’m feeling is an expression of the dual purposes I hope ( ritual ) creative can serve:

As sketchbook: A messy place to try new formats, share ideas in process, experiment without needing everything to be polished.

As business: Something that could eventually grow to support me. Which requires some consistency, some rhythm, some trust that if you’re here, I’ll keep showing up.

These two purposes create friction with each other. The sketchbook wants freedom. The business wants structure.

I don’t think I need to choose one. I think I need to learn to dance between them. To know when to prioritize freedom and when to honor structure.

This week, freedom won. The audio wanted to be made. It took longer than planned. And I’m trusting that the rhythm is still intact, even if the timing shifted.

We’ll see how it lands.

Ten years ago, The War of Art by Steven Pressfield found me at the exact moment I needed it.

I was deep in the edit for my first feature documentary, and struggling under the weight of it. I was looking for anything that could relieve the tension, the feeling of the endlessness of being midstream inside of such a massive creative process with no assurance I’d ever emerge.

Then I read this:

“The more important a call or action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it.”

Wait. The resistance increases with importance?

That reframe changed everything.

The resistance I was feeling wasn’t a sign the film was wrong or I wasn’t capable. It was confirmation the work mattered deeply.

Resistance as compass

Here’s what Pressfield understood that most of us miss: Resistance is directional.

It only attacks in one direction. From the life we’re living toward the unlived life inside us.

It doesn’t care about your Netflix queue or your email inbox. It cares deeply about your novel. Your music. Your creative vision. The work that actually matters.

Which means you can use it as a compass.

It’s 11pm. Client edit revisions on one screen. Unfinished Ableton session on the other.

The client work pays December’s rent. The song might never pay anything.

This exact toggle has organized my creative life for years. The Entrepreneur hustling client work. The Artist craving empty space for original visions.

Here’s what took me 18 years to learn: the creative life doesn’t get easier when you resolve this tension. It gets easier when you stop trying to fix it and start using it.

The friction between these two identities isn’t a bug in the system. It’s the generative engine of your creative legacy—if you know how to hook it up correctly.

The dual longing (and the real source of suffering)

For most of my career, I’ve lived firmly planted on the Entrepreneur side. Client-driven storytelling. Excellence at making things work financially. Solving problems on demand.

And from that position, I yearned for the Artist pole. Freedom to create unencumbered by constraints. Empty space for what wants to be born. No client brief dictating the outcome.

But here’s what surprised me when I finally carved out extended periods for pure creative work:

I started longing for the other side.

Working purely from artistic vision—no audience, no feedback loop, no revenue—creates its own tension. You’re wrestling with having no circuit at all. Just you and your vision, wondering if it matters to anyone. Longing for your work to actually meet an audience and generate income.

The grass isn’t greener on either side. It’s just different grass.

From the client-driven side, you sit inside the constraints longing for freedom.

From the artist side, you sit in the freedom longing for connection, feedback, revenue.

But here’s what I finally understood: The suffering doesn’t come from the longing itself. It comes from being unclear about which archetype you’re inhabiting in any given moment.

When you’re trying to create from pure artistic impulse while simultaneously worrying what an audience will think—you shut down. The Artist can’t breathe with the Entrepreneur looking over her shoulder.

When you’re trying to adapt your work for distribution but you’re too attached to your interior vision to make strategic edits—you stall. The Entrepreneur can’t do his job when the Artist won’t let go.

The suffering emerges from the unconscious blend. From not knowing which energy you’re employing and why.

Rick Rubin names this perfectly with his unexpected response to whether he keeps his audience in mind while he’s creating:

“The audience comes last. I believe that. I’m not making it for them. I’m making it for me. And it turns out that when you make something truly for yourself, you’re doing the best thing you possibly can for the audience.”

It’s only after the work has come through that he turns to the work of bringing it out into the world. Not both at once. One, then the other.

The skill isn’t resolving the tension. It’s becoming fluid in moving between the poles intentionally.

Mapping the mechanics (medicine & shadow)

To get this engine running, we have to map the parts honestly. Neither pole is superior. Both are essential perspectives.

But we have to go deeper than definitions. We have to look at the Medicine (the fuel) and the Shadow (the exhaust fumes) of each.

// The Artist Pole

The Medicine: Pure creative expression. Work that surprises and creates new frames. Devotional practice that feeds the soul. Creating for an audience of one.

The Shadow: Martyrdom disguised as purity. Dependency on gatekeepers (galleries, grants, spouses). Contempt for anyone who makes money from art. Isolation with no feedback loop. Refusing to adapt work for distribution.

The Longing: Connection. Revenue. Proof your work matters to others beyond yourself. A circuit that closes.

The Resistance: Judging those who “sell out.” Believing commerce automatically corrupts art. Using purity as an excuse to avoid the vulnerability of actually putting work into the world. Staying precious to avoid the marketplace’s feedback.

// The Entrepreneur Pole

The Medicine: Systems that create sustainability. Direct connection to audience needs. Freedom through financial sovereignty. Strategic adaptation that gets work into the world.

The Shadow: Everything becomes transactional. Creating only what’s already proven. Burnout from constant optimization. Contempt for artists who “can’t make it work.” Calculating ROI before the first draft.

The Longing: Freedom from constraints. Space for what wants to emerge without calculation. Creating unencumbered by market pressure.

The Resistance: Judging artists as impractical dreamers who can’t handle reality. Dismissing work that doesn’t scale or monetize. Using “the market” as an excuse to never risk making something truly personal. Staying safe by only creating what’s been validated.

The longing itself is information. It tells you which direction the polarity needs to move.

But watch the resistance—it’s the ego’s defense mechanism. When you find yourself judging the other pole, that’s usually a sign you need to integrate it.

The Artist calling others “sellouts” is often protecting against the vulnerability of putting work into the marketplace.

The Entrepreneur dismissing artists as “impractical” is often protecting against the risk of making something that can’t be justified by spreadsheet logic.

The real skill: Knowing which pole you’re standing in, and letting it do its work without contamination from the other.

The sensible approach (and its hidden costs)

For years, I tried to manage this tension with what seemed like the sensible approach: White Hat / Black Hat.

Black Hat Work: Client projects designed to pay bills.
White Hat Work: Projects done purely for their own sake.

The theory is elegant: Keep the art sacred. Let the client work fund the life. Create clear lanes so each gets its due.

And there’s real wisdom here. The White Hat / Black Hat distinction does something powerful—it creates clarity about what you’re doing and why.

When you know a project is Black Hat, you’re liberated. You’re not precious about creative control. You’re delivering value, getting paid, keeping the lights on. The Artist isn’t confused about what this is.

When you protect White Hat time, the Artist breathes. No client brief. No revenue pressure. Pure creative inquiry.

Donald Glover does this. TV money (Black Hat) funds experimental music (White Hat). Rick Rubin charges massive fees as a producer (Black Hat) so he can spend months reading and meditating (White Hat).

The distinction protects the sanctity of the Artist pole while honoring the necessity of the Entrepreneur.

But here’s where it broke down for me:

The Black Hat almost always wins. When you’re not quite at financial escape velocity, when the client work isn’t yet covering everything you need, the Black Hat dominates. The White Hat work gets squeezed to the margins. Again and again.

You tell yourself “next month I’ll have more space.” But next month brings another client project. And another. The Artist stays withered.

And here’s the hidden cost nobody talks about: I’ve done client-driven documentary work for 18 years. Hundreds of short films. Excellent craft. Good money. Projects I’m proud of.

But I never distributed them directly. Never tried to cultivate my own community. Never built a direct relationship with an audience.

I got paid up front—which is real and important. But I wasn’t accruing anything that compounded. No equity. No ongoing relationship with viewers. No platform of my own.

Every project, I was building someone else’s engine. Renting my wizardry for a day rate.

When you make a beautiful documentary that gets 2 million views and helps a client raise $3 million in funding, your cut?

Your invoice.

No equity. No residual. No relationship with those 2 million people who just experienced your storytelling.

The White Hat / Black Hat model can work. But only if:

• Your Black Hat work is priced and bounded ruthlessly

• You’re past financial escape velocity

• You’re willing to never own a direct audience relationship

For me, that third constraint became unbearable.

The gray zone (where self-honesty collapses)

There’s one more trap worth naming: The Gray Zone.

These are projects that feel like they could be both. Client-funded but with significant creative freedom. Budget attached. Your vision shaping it. Maybe even potential to become “your thing.”

My cautionary tale: An NFT storytelling project. Well budgeted. Creative freedom. Interesting subject matter—technology intersecting with creative culture, conversations about sovereignty. I brought on a team. There was potential to build a platform around it.

But I kept hesitating.

Because underneath, I wasn’t fully convicted. I wouldn’t actually play in the NFT space myself. It wasn’t my community. I found it interesting, but I didn’t want to die on that hill.

The project had funding (Entrepreneur pole) and creative freedom (Artist pole), but it lacked the one thing that makes the integration work: authentic conviction from the deepest place.

The diagnostic question that finally clarified everything:

If the money weren’t there, would I still make this?

If the answer is anything other than an immediate, full-body yes, it’s client work. Call it Black Hat and proceed accordingly.

If it’s yes—if you’d make it anyway, and the funding just removes friction—then you’re in integration territory. Artist and Entrepreneur aligned.

The Gray Zone is where you lie to yourself about which it is. And that self-deception becomes an energy vampire.

The lesson: Get brutally honest. Fast.

The reframe: the generative engine

Here’s what I’m learning to build: a system where both poles do their work, separately and together, without contamination.

Virginia Woolf wrote:

“A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction.”

She didn’t say money OR a room. She said both.

The Artist needs the Entrepreneur to protect the space where art happens. The Entrepreneur needs the Artist to generate the signal worth protecting.

David Lynch names the rhythm perfectly:

“I don’t think about the audience at all when I’m making something. But I think about them a lot when I’m figuring out how to get it out there.”

Artist, then Entrepreneur. Two distinct modes. Both essential.

Rick Rubin lives this completely. He creates conditions for pure artistic inquiry—months of reading, meditating, wandering. When he enters the studio with an artist, he’s the Artist. Intuition leads. No calculation.

But he charges massive fees for that service. The Entrepreneur protects the Artist’s space with ruthless clarity about value and boundaries.

Then he did something else: He went meta. He published The Creative Act. Built a platform around creativity itself. Went direct to an audience interested in the same inquiry he’d been living.

That’s the integration move. The Artist generates signal from lived experience. The Entrepreneur builds infrastructure so that signal reaches people who need it. And you own the relationship.

Going direct: the integration bet

My bet: The way forward is through creative sovereignty. Building a direct relationship with an audience around your signal.

( ritual ) creative isn’t just a newsletter. It’s my answer to 18 years of renting my genius.

It’s infrastructure where both poles can finally breathe without compromise.

The Artist generates work from the interior. The muse leads. Beauty matters more than metrics. I write what wants to be written, share the music that’s been knocking, document the journey that’s actually unfolding.

The Entrepreneur distributes that work and protects the artist’s time. Strategic positioning. Substack Notes for discovery. Paid tiers that prove value. Products that serve the audience while generating revenue. Systems that ensure the Artist can keep making.

This is my integration. Artist credibility meets Entrepreneur skill. And for the first time, I’m building my own foundation instead of renting someone else’s.

In the spirit of transparency and real talk, here’s where this experiment stands, six weeks in:

Is this enough to replace client income? Not even close.

But here’s the math that keeps me awake at night (in the best way):

If I can reach 500 paid subscribers at $15/month, that’s $90K/year. Add product sales, occasional cohorts, digital offerings. Multiple paths to the same destination: replacing client income while owning the relationship with my audience.

The path exists. The engine is running. Both poles working together, not against each other.

And here’s what’s different from client work: Every subscriber, every product sale, every person in a cohort—they’re my audience. The foundation compounds. The relationship is direct. The wizardry builds equity, not just invoices.

What this means for you

You know your engine is stalled when:

• You’re constantly longing for the opposite pole from where you’re standing

• You create while worrying what the audience will think (Artist contaminated by Entrepreneur)

• You can’t adapt your work for distribution because you’re too attached to your interior vision (Entrepreneur blocked by Artist)

• You’ve been renting your wizardry for years with nothing compounding underneath you

• You’re lying to yourself about what a project really is (Gray Zone trap)

The polarity isn’t your problem. The unconscious blend is.

The breakthrough: Learn to move between the poles with clarity. Artist when creating. Entrepreneur when distributing. Integration when building your own foundation.

Most creative blocks aren’t about lack of ideas. They’re about transition friction.

Not to finish. Not to perfect. Not even to make something good.

Just to make contact with the medium.

How it works

The moment you feel creative pull:

• Melody in your head? 90 seconds to hum it into Voice Memos or touch a single piano key

• Story idea? 90 seconds to write one true sentence in Notes

• Visual composition catches your eye? 90 seconds to take the photo, even if it’s just on your phone

• Frame or shot idea? 90 seconds to sketch it, or record a 3-second test on your phone

The rule is simple: First contact within 90 seconds, or the impulse dies.

We’re six days into a ten-day voyage across the Atlantic, navigating massive swells, and I’m conducting an interview in a commandeered cabin while the ship pitches violently beneath us. The man across from me is Boniface, a Kenyan activist released from jail just weeks ago, brought here by a coalition that rallied for his freedom.

Tomorrow I’ll film an indigenous elder discussing how he and his people did the impossible — came back from near erasure.

The day after, a financial economist explaining how a single living whale is worth $2 million in carbon sequestration.

This is not a normal documentary project.

Last fall, over twelve days, a small team and I documented an experiment that shouldn’t have worked: 400 humans from radically different worlds trapped together on a chartered ship crossing from Lisbon to Puerto Rico. Indigenous elders, crypto technologists, climate scientists, refugees, activists, industrialists.

125 of them were Fellows: practitioners and experts selected not despite their differences but because of them. Funded by patrons who believed the future depends on unlikely people solving problems together.

The crossing was organized by a nascent alliance of “optimistic pragmatists” called Earth One, brought together to navigate civilizational frontiers. Bear, the founder, put it:

There’s a threshold that needs to be crossed, and that threshold cannot be crossed by one group of people. It has to be a group of people representing the full tapestry of humanity … [but] once that foundation of trust is truly built, which is hard, it takes a lot of work and is a constantly evolving process—from there, miracles can happen.

Our team of eight on the story team showed up as volunteers for what turned out to be a massive undertaking. Twenty-five long-form interviews, atmospheric documentation, drone capture floating above the ship in the middle of the ocean, an all-night edit sprint to create a live performance blending film and music.

What I witnessed changed how I think about how we coordinate—not just our work, but our becoming.

The isolation we’re not naming

Our modern predicament: You’re on your third Zoom of the day. Everyone’s a thumbnail. The meeting ends and you’re alone with the weight of what you’re building.

You want more than project partners. You want crew. People who’ll call out your blind spots, hold you accountable to becoming more than you are. But that’s not available to many of us freelancer, multi-hyphenate creators who have eschewed the traditional 9-5.

So you keep grinding. Alone.

Brilliant minds in adjacent fields solve related problems but never connect. Resources pool in one domain while another starves. Solutions discovered in one context could transform another, but the bridge never gets built.

But there’s something deeper: We’re isolated in our becoming. Addressing civilizational challenges from an atomized position, carrying the weight alone, wondering if we’re growing or just grinding ourselves down.

An old idea, a new frame: Guildcraft

A dear friend and designer, Carson, and I had both been on a journey exploring systems change and new models for collaboration as we worked through this familiar angst. We’d been in inquiry around what it means to work together in association when there’s no real structure that fits.

We didn’t just want to be part of a community. We weren’t ready to start a company. We felt there was another way to think about the relationships we wanted: to be creating together, but also supporting one another on each of our sovereign paths of growth.

That’s when we started exploring guilds.

Historically, guilds focused on supporting members deepening in their craft through apprenticeship models, while also providing common advocacy for the collective. We wanted to preserve this notion of being on a developmental journey, but not just in craft. Also in our becoming. The ethical dimensions. The spiritual dimensions.

And we wanted to emphasize co-creation, not just the singular pursuit of excellence. The question became: What can we build together in the interstitial spaces between my gifts and your gifts?

This became the dual commitment at the heart of what we were calling Guildcraft:

// Co-creative: Making things together. Working on real solutions. Shipping outcomes.

// Co-developmental: Supporting each other’s growth. Tending the inner work. Calling out blind spots with care. Recognizing you can’t transform the world without addressing what needs transforming within yourself.

Traditional collaboration stops at co-creative. We make things, ship outcomes, move fast, get it done. But we’re not machines. When we pretend otherwise, we burn out. We hollow out. We produce competent work that has no soul.

What if we brought the whole human into our collaborations? What if we cared about each other’s growth as much as the project? What if we created structure that actually holds us, challenges us, supports us, calls us forward, instead of just extracting outcomes?

When Carson and another friend Bear Kittay started working on Earth One, they realized this could be an opportunity to test the framework at scale. They decided to organize the entire voyage around six guilds.

The prospect of documenting it all felt like a waking dream.

The ship as pressure cooker

We departed November 3rd, 2024, traveling a former slave route. Not as metaphor. As fact. This specific path carried ships loaded with human cargo for centuries.

Three days later, crossing the mid-Atlantic in international waters, the U.S. presidential election results came in. No algorithms curating reality. No unfollowing people you disagreed with. Just 400 humans from radically different worlds and vast ocean in every direction.

👆🏽A short clip we cut while on the crossing; it includes footage of the ceremony that initiated our voyage in Lisbon; a powerful inversion of an old story, as indigenous elders from many traditions led the way. The clip of Tom (one of the elders) repeats at the end; in the live performance it became a looped, sampled clip that merged with a live musical score.

The whole thing was riddled with contradiction. A regenerative gathering on a resource-intensive cruise ship. Changemakers traveling a route that once carried enslaved people. Luxury accommodations for work focused on planetary healing. All of it happening when American democracy felt like it was tearing at the seams.

Carson named it perfectly:

“The future isn’t clean. The future isn’t going to be a binary shift into a new world. We’re mediating what is, and we’re shepherding it. This ship was crossing the ocean either way. It could have crossed empty, or with retirees. Or it could cross as a catalyst for a profound community to be born.”

So we leaned into the paradox.

Here’s what Earth One understood: If you don’t collapse the field, the tension between poles is generative. But without structures to hold the nuance and paradox, the field collapses into polarization. You get pulled into identification with one end of the spectrum. You make each other wrong. You other one another.

The greatest achievement of the Atlantic crossing may have been creating a context where there could be generative friction between so many polarities. People from different backgrounds and political affiliations. Living inside these tensions and contradictions, not avoiding them, but increasing our capacity to be with them without making each other wrong.

Earth One built three interlocking layers to hold it all:

// The Guilds - Six domains organizing the work: Ocean, New Economies, Intelligences, Governance, Resilience, Biocultures. Each built around that dual commitment—co-creative and co-developmental.

// The Fellowship - 125 practitioners carefully curated to infuse each guild with real-world wisdom. Indigenous grandmothers. Crypto technologists. Climate economists. Freed political prisoners. Youth activists. Brought together because of their differences, not despite them.

// The Chaplaincy - People trained in nonviolent communication whose sole job was to tend the field. To make conflict productive. To metabolize trauma. To bridge worldviews. Without this, the co-developmental commitment means nothing.

Eva, one of the chaplains—a Palestinian who grew up Muslim in Israel, studied at a Jesuit school, then spent 25 years with UN peacekeeping and the World Bank learning to hold impossible tensions, said:

When opposites sit in the friction long enough

The New Economies Guild was a controlled collision.

Indigenous grandmothers carrying wisdom about nature-based economies. Cryptocurrency technologists with visions of decentralized finance.

These worldviews shouldn’t reconcile. The elders weren’t convinced blockchain served anything beyond extraction: another colonial tool dressed in liberation language. The crypto developers couldn’t understand why wisdom keepers rejected technology that could redistribute power and move resources without intermediaries taking their cut.

Day one, they were talking past each other.

Day two, the tension thickened. This wasn’t abstract debate. Both sides were right about their concerns and blind to the other’s truth.

Day three, it could have broken. Someone’s voice got sharp. The distance between their worlds felt unbridgeable.

But the structure held them there.

The chaplains tended the field. The co-developmental commitment meant they couldn’t just debate abstractions—they had to see each other as humans on journeys of growth. They couldn’t stay isolated in their certainties. They had to risk being changed.

The elders and technologists had been sitting in the tension long enough that something unexpected emerged. By the end of four days, they’d held the opposites, and suddenly there was a breakthrough.

Jyoti Ma turned to the group: “Now that works!”

Pat, another grandmother, leaned over: “Grannies for crypto.”

The room erupted.

Not because everyone agreed about everything. Not because all concerns evaporated. But because sitting in the friction long enough, with the right structure to hold it, allowed synthesis to emerge.

The technology wasn’t the enemy. The extraction was. And maybe, just maybe, the technology could serve the healing.

Breakthroughs cascading across domains

This was happening everywhere on board.

Ralph, an economist who’d spent 25 years at the IMF, quit his job after a whale surfaced beside his boat. He dedicated his work to proving that nature has intrinsic economic value that dwarfs its extractive worth: A single living whale is worth $2 million in carbon sequestration. An elephant over its lifetime adds $1.75 million to forest ecosystems.

He’s now persuading countries like the Bahamas to restore their seagrass beds. The world is willing to pay them for it. Coastal economies are stabilizing. Ecosystems being protected. Financial systems and ecological protection aligned, not opposed.

The Ocean Guild generated a coalition to ban deep sea mining, launching a campaign in Jamaica where the International Seabed Authority is based. The bridges between domains, between perspectives, between worlds that desperately need connecting finally getting built.

Because people started weaving between domains, and stopped working alone.

Art for art’s sake

We were volunteers. Eight of us doing film and story work. Conducting interviews while the ship pitched through swells. Pulling all-nighters to edit footage. It was a tremendous undertaking.

But you can’t replace the potency of feeling like you’re part of something that actually matters.

Here’s what I recognize now: the members of the story team had an absurdly privileged perspective. As a director, I got to sit with 25 different humans and hear the arc of their journeys in 30-40 minutes of unbroken, uninterrupted flow.

You can’t sit with somebody that long and not fall in love with them.

A peace activist losing her eyesight for two years—what she calls “the dark night of the ego”—being stripped of every identity until she could sit with the wound underneath. A woman surviving female genital mutilation at 19, the trauma triggering “a response that was the opposite of what it was intended to do”—not silence, but the decision to reclaim her voice for others.

An indigenous advocate jumping off a school bus as a child to stop a man beating a horse, that impulse to intervene becoming a lifetime of fighting for native populations.

You can’t help but see the granular layers. How life experiences shaped them, yes, but also the tremendous spirit it takes to transform tragedy into new potential. How these challenges metabolize into opportunities.

That’s the power of story. It reveals the broader context that holds space for what hurts. It creates a level of connectedness that helps us see each other in our shared humanity. And I wasn’t alone in feeling this. People across the ship kept approaching us, wanting to talk about storytelling—not as documentation, but as something essential.

Arjun, a classical musician who spent decades studying music’s relationship to social transformation, captured it perfectly:

“Art is first the medicine that can help us reach the place within ourselves from which the solutions will emerge. And then it’s the vehicle by which we can take that solution and share it with the world.”

Art for art’s sake. Not as frivolity, but as the medicine we need to become the people who can solve these problems. Stories that hold space for both collapse and courage, enshrining the best of humanity while making room for what needs to transform.

Sampling reality

As we approach Puerto Rico, our team pulled an all-nighter to edit everything we’ve captured into a live performance. Eduardo Castillo provided the score—bloomy synth landscapes, tension and release. I sat at the piano alongside him along with several other musicians, playing live. And as we perform, video clips from our interviews flash across screens around the room.

Not film with a soundtrack. Not a concert with visuals. Something integrated from the ground up.

The room holds it. Stories breathe through the music. Something novel emerges at the intersection of all these guilds and our work as artists.

This is the fertile ground of the in-between—the interstitial space where the work of the guilds met the arts.

The pregnant space between domains where synthesis becomes possible.

Power-with, not power-over

Traditional organizations run on extraction. Someone at the top decides the vision. Resources flow up. Power accumulates. You’re either in or you’re out.

Earth One was testing something different.

Brené Brown calls it “power-with” instead of “power-over.” You don’t need to centralize authority to coordinate action. You don’t need hierarchy to create alignment. What you need is a field strong enough to hold difference without collapsing into sameness or fragmenting into chaos.

That’s what the guild structure offered. Six domains, each with autonomy. 125 Fellows bringing expertise. Chaplains holding the relational field. And underneath it all, that dual commitment: We’re here to make things together, and we’re here to support each other’s growth.

This isn’t just philosophical. It changes what becomes possible.

When you’re not competing for scarce resources or positions in a hierarchy, you can actually collaborate. When you’re not performing certainty, you can risk being wrong. When you’re held in your becoming, you can show up as whole humans instead of just your productive output.

The alternative—the model we’re all exhausted by—is grinding alone. Performing competence. Protecting territory. Moving fast but never quite sure if you’re moving forward.

The invitation

I left the Atlantic Crossing with a question I can’t shake: What would it look like to lean into an exploration of guildcraft in my own creative work?

I don’t have the answer yet.

But I know this: The problems we’re facing—planetary, cultural, economic, spiritual—they’re too complex for any one person, any one discipline, any one worldview to solve alone.

And I know this: Most of us are exhausted by the isolation. By the grinding. By the pretending we have it all figured out when we’re barely holding it together.

What if we stopped?

What if we built structures that actually hold us? That challenge us? That call us forward while tending to what’s tender?

What if we recognized that co-creation without co-development is extraction? And that co-development without co-creation is therapy?

What if we held both?

That’s the invitation.

Not to have it all figured out. Not to perform certainty. But to risk building something together that we couldn’t build alone. To sit in the tension long enough for something new to emerge.

To trust that when you bring your whole self to work that matters, in relationship with others doing the same, breakthroughs become possible.

To remember what the grandmothers and crypto technologists discovered: sitting in the friction long enough, with the right structure to hold it, allows synthesis to emerge.

We’re all crossing an ocean together.

The question is whether we’ll do it alone, or whether we’ll build the guilds that let us navigate the storms as crew.
