Two concepts, one from sociology and one from anthropology, that explain what is actually happening when a remote enterprise deal moves or dies, with practical reframes for sellers working over Zoom and Slack.

Economic anthropology and interpretive sociology share a distinctive move: they take categories that feel neutral, “the market,” “the deal,” “the buyer,” and ask what is actually happening underneath. Enterprise sales is one of the few commercial environments where that question becomes difficult to avoid. Anyone who has spent enough time inside real deals knows that what gets called “rational buying” often bears only a passing resemblance to what they actually watched unfold. Frameworks like BANT, MEDDPICC, and Challenger are useful in the way a city map is useful: they will get you mostly to the right block. They are not the territory.

What follows is not a sales playbook dressed in anthropology. It is the reverse. Two concepts, one from each discipline, that more accurately describe what is actually happening inside a remote enterprise deal. Each comes with a practical reframe.

The thinkers cited here would likely have mixed feelings about being recruited into a commercial argument. Honoring them means acknowledging an uncomfortable truth: the same lens that helps a seller close more deals also names the structures of influence being used. The mechanism works in both directions. What follows makes no attempt to pretend otherwise.

1. Front Stage and Back Stage (Sociology, Goffman)

In The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (1959), Erving Goffman argued that social life is structured into front regions, where performance is staged for an audience, and back regions, where the performer prepares, relaxes, and breaks character. He did not see performance as inauthentic. He saw it as the ordinary structure of selfhood under social conditions. He also understood it to be exhausting.

The buyer on a multi-person Zoom call is performing for at least four audiences at once: peers, a boss, the version of herself she wants to be seen as, and you. The information that actually closes deals, what she really thinks, what she cannot say in front of her CTO, why the last vendor truly failed, lives in the back regions. Most remote selling never reaches those places, not because the rep lacks skill, but because the environment makes candor structurally difficult. Most remote selling happens in multi-person Zoom calls with cameras on, decks open, Slack notifications buzzing, and status dynamics fully intact. Reps trained on MEDDPICC hear weak discovery answers and conclude they need sharper questions. Goffman’s view is harsher. No question can do that work. Backstage is not an answer. It is a place.

Try a 1:1 audio call with your champion. No video. No agenda document. Twenty minutes. Frame it simply: “Wanted to get your read on a few things before the bigger call.” Instead of a “stakeholder alignment” video meeting with five attendees and a shared deck. Because backstage in remote sales is a function of audience structure, not relationship depth. A five-person video meeting forces everyone, including your champion, into performance mode. Audio only, one person, no shared screen, no recording, is the closest the remote world gets to the walk back from coffee. The buyer who will not speak candidly on camera will often do so on a phone call while walking the dog.

2. Liminality (Anthropology, van Gennep and Turner)

Arnold van Gennep’s Les Rites de Passage (1909), later expanded by Victor Turner, described the three-phase structure of transitions across cultures: separation from an old role, a liminal phase between identities, and incorporation into a new one. Turner’s deeper contribution was his description of the liminal state itself: hierarchies invert, taboos suspend, communitas forms among fellow initiates, and the initiate becomes suggestible, vulnerable, and intensely uncomfortable. Cultures wrap liminality in ritual because, otherwise, it becomes unbearable.

A buyer in evaluation occupies precisely this state. They have publicly committed to leaving the old world, the incumbent vendor, the current architecture, the inherited way of doing things, but they have not yet entered a new one. This explains observations every veteran seller has made but few frameworks adequately name. Why hierarchies invert during evaluation, with the junior analyst suddenly becoming strangely oracular. Why taboos suspend, with a buyer admitting things in a private 1:1 she would never say in a formal group setting. Why an intense seller-buyer intimacy can form during a deal cycle, only to dissolve almost immediately after signature. And, most importantly, why “no decision” remains the modal enterprise loss.

The buyer did not fail to decide. The buyer became stranded in liminality without a guide, then retreated to the old world because the old world, however flawed, is less psychologically punishing than existing in no world at all.

Try a thirty-minute conversation in which the buyer narrates, in her own words, what work looks like ninety days after go-live. Her meetings. Her dashboards. The things she no longer has to do. The conversations she no longer have to have. Instead of another product demo, ROI revisit, or technical deep dive the moment the deal slows. Because liminality is painful precisely because the post-threshold self remains undefined. Adding more information about your product often makes that uncertainty larger, not smaller. Asking the buyer to describe the post-decision self is incorporation rehearsal in van Gennep’s strict sense. She crosses the threshold in imagination first. Signing becomes the ratification of a journey already mentally completed. Motivational interviewing in clinical work relies on the same mechanism for the same reason.

Synthesis

Both concepts reject the fiction of the buyer as a purely rational comparison machine. Goffman says she is performing. Van Gennep and Turner say she is suspended between identities. The sale moves when the seller meets her where she actually is.

This perspective does not make selling easier. It makes it harder, because it requires reading layers most sales tools do not surface. It also makes selling more honest, because it forces the seller to name what they are actually doing instead of pretending the process is neutral.

The same lens that allows a seller to engineer backstage access and guide a buyer across a threshold can also describe manipulation. The distinction is not in the mechanism. The distinction is whether the buyer, on reflection, would endorse what just happened.

The frameworks are not wrong. They are simply operating one floor above where the real work is happening.

Sociology and anthropology have been working on the lower floor since 1909.

That thesis is offensively simple:

And the truly absurd part is not that we said it out loud.

It’s that in more than a century of sales books, airport business literature, acronym addiction, fake urgency templates, permission-based orthodoxy, faux alpha cold-call theater, LinkedIn guru cosplay, enough recycled SaaS nonsense to power keynote stages through 2049, and an industrial complex built around teaching people to “circle back,” nobody built the obvious hit.

Nobody looked at prospecting, looked at dating, and thought:

And when you say that out loud, parts of the category react like you licked a church bell during mass.

Somewhere, Jeb Blount just felt a disturbance in the force.

And everyone is shocked buyers ghost.

Of course they ghost.

Business buyers are still human. They still have egos, intuition, and an almost supernatural ability to detect desperation through enterprise Wi-Fi. Confidence attracts because certainty feels safe. Neediness repels because pressure always smells like weakness. Mystery creates curiosity. Timing matters. Overpursuit kills desire. Energy communicates before words do.

Modern prospecting advice is basically dating advice written by compliance lawyers.

In April of 2019, I was running enterprise sales for a mobile attribution analytics company in San Francisco, selling into the top tier of consumer apps.
