minute of it. Not every circumstance. But my life? I really like it.

And I've realized that happiness, for me, doesn't look particularly peaceful.

It looks like dinner with my husband, a table full of food and a conversation that somehow lasts three hours.

It looks like breakfast or lunch with friends, laughing too loudly, talking too much and solving everyone's problems whether they asked us to or not.

I'm a giver of advice. A good listener. I like people, stories and being in the middle of things.

And then there's my jam.

KISS. Always KISS.

Ace Frehley was my favorite Spaceman. And then there was Simon Le Bon—my teenage crush.

KISS, Duran Duran, new wave. Music that became attached to entire chapters of my life. Give me the right song and I'm right back there, singing along.

That's my jam.

I love my kitchen, too. I have enough culinary gadgets to outfit a small restaurant, and I regret absolutely none of them. I love cooking something I'm proud of and taking the picture when it comes together just right.

I love roses.

I love cats.

I love morning coffee, downtempo music, Barefoot Dreams socks and pretty nighties. The little luxuries that make an ordinary day feel like mine.

I love deep conversations and ridiculous ones. I love reminiscing with friends I've known since elementary school. I love being there for people, celebrating them and, yes, giving advice—sometimes even when nobody asked.

Especially then.

And I love my family. I love watching my children become themselves. I love thirty-five years with the man I chose and who chose me back.

When I put all of that together, I realize something:

Maybe happiness isn't something we find. Maybe it's something we notice.

There will always be something to worry about. Something to fix. Something waiting for tomorrow.

But I don't want worry to become my personality.

I want to laugh.

Cook.

Listen.

Celebrate.

Remember.

Love.

Turn up the music.

Buy the roses.

Pet the cats.

Go to dinner.

Have another breakfast with a friend.

Take the picture of the food.

Tell the story again.

Be a little too much sometimes.

Because maybe the real audacity isn't pretending life is perfect.

It's refusing to become so serious about life that you forget to enjoy the one you're actually living.

I'm not interested in becoming serene.

I'm interested in becoming more alive.

And this life?

It's my jam.

I'm going to enjoy it.☕️

The State of Being

When I was a child, I learned about being verbs.

Robin Oxenhandler ☕️

When I was a child, I learned about being verbs.

Am. Is. Are.
Was. Were.
Will be.
Been.

I remember a story that accompanied the lesson. A man arrived at a party, introduced himself as a mysterious stranger, and announced that he came from the State of Being.

His name?

Am-Is-Are Will-Be Was-Were-Been.

At the time, I thought it was funny.

I had no idea that decades later I would realize the man might have been onto something.

Because we spend our entire lives moving through different states of being.

There is the I am version of ourselves. The person standing firmly in the present. Here. Awake. Existing. Sometimes confident, sometimes uncertain, but undeniably here.

There is the I was version. The person looking backward. Remembering childhood. Remembering mistakes. Remembering people we loved and things we wish we had done differently.

There is I will be.

That one is filled with possibility.

I will be happier.
I will be stronger.
I will be less afraid.
I will be the person I know I am capable of becoming.

And then there is I have been.

That one carries everything.

The heartbreaks. The triumphs. The embarrassing moments. The beautiful ones. The versions of ourselves we outgrew and the ones we still carry around like photographs in our pockets.

Perhaps this is why circumstances can feel so different from one day to the next.

The circumstances haven't necessarily changed.

We have.

A quiet house can feel peaceful when we're content and unbearably lonely when we're not.

Rain can feel romantic when we're cozy inside and depressing when we're already having a difficult day.

An unanswered text can mean absolutely nothing when we're grounded and feel like rejection when we're already questioning our worth.

The room is the same.

The weather is the same.

The phone is the same.

But our state of being has changed.

And maybe that is something we forget.

We are constantly trying to change our circumstances when sometimes what needs our attention first is the place from which we are experiencing them.

This doesn't mean we can think our way out of pain.

Sometimes being sad is simply being sad.

Sometimes being disappointed is appropriate.

Sometimes being angry is information.

Sometimes being lost is where we have to be before we can figure out where we're going.

We don't have to turn every difficult feeling into a lesson before we've had a chance to feel it.

We don't have to rush out of every uncomfortable state of being.

We can simply say:

This is where I am today.

Not forever.

Today.

That distinction matters.

Because a state of being is not necessarily a permanent address.

It is a place we are visiting.

And perhaps the greatest gift of getting older is learning that we don't have to identify ourselves by every place we pass through.

I can be uncertain without being an uncertain person.

I can be lonely without being unlovable.

I can be afraid without being weak.

I can be tired without having failed.

I can be beginning again without pretending I haven't been through anything.

There is something incredibly comforting about that.

We are not finished sentences.

We are verbs.

Always moving.

Always changing tense.

Sometimes living in the present.

Sometimes haunted by the past.

Sometimes leaning toward the future.

And maybe the goal isn't to find one perfect state of being and stay there forever.

Maybe the goal is simply to become more comfortable inhabiting ourselves wherever we happen to be.

So I think about that little boy at the party sometimes—the mysterious stranger from the State of Being.

Am-Is-Are.

Will-Be.

Was-Were-Been.

He sounded like a silly character in a childhood grammar lesson.

But perhaps he was actually delivering a very grown-up message:

You are allowed to be where you are.

You are allowed to be becoming.

You are allowed to have been.

You are allowed to be unsure of what will be.

And most importantly—

you are still being.

And that, I think, is the whole point.

We are here.

We are becoming.

We are becoming again.

We are becoming still.

And for today, maybe that's enough.

Maybe simply being here is its own kind of magic.☕️

What if waking up is the gift?

Not the big things we spend our lives waiting for.

Not the answered prayer, the clean bill of health, the phone call we've been hoping for, the money in the bank, the relationship finally making sense, or the moment when everything falls beautifully into place.

What if the gift comes much earlier than that?

What if the gift is simply this:

You woke up.

The day is here.

And somehow, despite everything, you are here to meet it.

I've been thinking about this lately because I've been feeling a little insecure about my life. Not necessarily unhappy. Not even necessarily lost. Just...uncertain.

There are moments when I wonder if I'm doing enough, becoming enough, making enough of this one wild life I've been given.

I think we all have these moments.

We look sideways at other people's lives and suddenly our own seems to require an explanation.

We wonder if we've taken the right turns.

If we're behind.

If we should be further along.

If the person we imagined we would become is actually the person we've become.

And then morning comes.

The coffee starts.

The light finds its way through the window.

The house begins to stir.

And I remember something.

I am still here.

Which means the story isn't finished.

Maybe waking up isn't a guarantee that the day will be wonderful.

It is something better.

It is an invitation.

Another day to participate in our own lives.

Another day to be curious.

Another day to love someone.

Another day to change our minds.

Another day to make something.

Another day to apologize.

Another day to laugh so hard that we forget, for a moment, what we were worried about.

Another day to notice the sky.

Another day to put on something soft and beautiful.

Another day to make the coffee exactly the way we like it.

Another day to be completely, unapologetically ourselves.

And perhaps that is where the cherry on top comes in.

The day is the gift.

What we choose to do with it is the cherry on top.

We don't get to control everything that arrives on our doorstep. Some days will bring disappointment. Some will bring uncertainty. Some will ask more of us than we think we have to give.

But we still get to decide what we bring to the day.

And I want to bring my practical magic.

I want to bring the part of me that still believes little things matter.

The woman who lights a candle because the room feels better with one.

Who sends the text.

Who remembers the birthday.

Who stops to pet the cat.

Who makes something ordinary feel a little special simply because she can.

Who believes that a good cup of coffee can be an event.

Who can find meaning in a conversation, beauty in an old song, comfort in a familiar sweater, and a story hiding inside an ordinary Tuesday.

I want to bring my honesty, too.

My headstrong nature.

The part of me that has learned not to make myself smaller just to make everyone else comfortable.

For a long time, I thought becoming the person I was meant to be meant changing myself.

Becoming less emotional.

Less sensitive.

Less opinionated.

Less complicated.

More polished.

More certain.

But maybe I've had it backwards.

Maybe becoming is not about constructing a brand new person.

Maybe it is about uncovering the person who was there all along.

The woman beneath the fear.

Beneath the expectations.

Beneath the years of wondering whether she was doing it right.

She was always there.

Headstrong.

Honest.

Tender.

A little mischievous.

A little magical.

And completely capable of making something beautiful out of an ordinary day.

So perhaps I don't need to figure out my entire life this morning.

Perhaps neither do you.

Perhaps we can simply open our eyes.

Take the day we've been given.

And begin.

There will be coffee.

There will be things to do.

There will be people to love.

There will be things that don't go according to plan.

There will probably be a little chaos.

There may even be a moment when we wonder what the hell we're doing.

But underneath all of it is this extraordinary fact:

We woke up.

The day arrived.

It chose us.

And now we get to choose what we bring to it.

That feels like a pretty good place to begin.

And maybe—just maybe—that is the magic.

Not waiting for life to become extraordinary before we decide it is worth celebrating.

But waking up to an ordinary day and realizing that we are the ones who get to add the sparkle.☕️

I have been thinking about complaints lately.

Not the big ones. Not the complaints that require action or a phone call or a difficult conversation.

I mean the little, repetitive ones that live quietly in the background of our days.

I don't have enough time.

I wish people would listen.

I hate how cluttered this house feels.

I wish I had more energy.

Nobody notices how much I do.

I wish things felt easier.

We tend to think of complaining as something we should stop doing. Something negative. Something that makes us sound ungrateful or dissatisfied.

But what if a complaint is actually trying to tell us something?

I recently came across an idea through Elephant Meditation that suggested looking beneath a complaint to find the desire hiding underneath it. I didn't create this idea; I encountered it there, and it stayed with me long enough that I wanted to turn it over in my own hands and see what else it might reveal.

Because maybe the complaint isn't the problem.

Maybe we simply haven't learned how to translate it.

“I never have enough time” might actually mean:

I desire more spaciousness in my life.

“Nobody appreciates what I do” might mean:

I desire to feel seen.

“My house is always a mess” might mean:

I desire a home that feels peaceful.

“I don't have anything to look forward to” might mean:

I desire anticipation.

“I am tired of being the strong one” might mean:

I desire to be cared for, too.

Suddenly, something changes.

The complaint loses some of its teeth.

It becomes information.

And information is something we can work with.

The complaint is often pointing toward the life we want.

I think this is where the exercise becomes more interesting.

Instead of arguing with ourselves about whether we're complaining too much, we can become curious.

What is this complaint really asking for?

Not what is wrong.

What do I want?

That question has an entirely different energy.

It moves us from criticism to creation.

Instead of:

I hate that I never have time for myself.

We can ask:

What would having more time for myself look like?

Maybe it means sitting with coffee for twenty uninterrupted minutes.

Maybe it means saying no.

Maybe it means putting something on the calendar that belongs only to us.

Maybe it means accepting that not everything needs to be done today.

The desire gives us somewhere to go.

The complaint only tells us where we don't want to be.

And then there is the inner critic.

Mine has always been very committed to her job.

She has opinions.

She has evidence.

She keeps receipts.

She can tell me exactly where I have fallen short, what I should have done differently, what everyone else seems to be doing better, and approximately seventeen reasons why I am not quite there yet.

For years, I thought I needed to silence her.

Now I'm wondering if that isn't quite right.

Maybe I don't need to silence her.

Maybe I need to stop employing her.

There is a difference.

When that voice starts its familiar monologue, I can acknowledge it without handing it the microphone.

I can say:

I hear you.

Thank you for trying to protect me.

But I don't need your help with this.

And then I can return to the question that matters:

What do I desire instead?

This feels much kinder than fighting with myself.

Because the inner critic doesn't necessarily appear because we are broken.

Sometimes it appears because somewhere along the way, criticism became a form of protection.

If I criticize myself first, perhaps I can avoid being criticized by someone else.

If I anticipate every possible failure, perhaps I can prevent disappointment.

If I never let myself feel satisfied, perhaps I will keep striving.

The critic may believe it is keeping us safe.

But safety and freedom are not always the same thing.

At some point, we have to decide whether the voice that once protected us still gets to run the household.

Desire is not the same thing as dissatisfaction.

This is the part I am trying to remember.

Wanting something different doesn't mean I hate what I have.

Wanting more rest doesn't mean I am ungrateful for my life.

Wanting to be seen doesn't mean nobody loves me.

Wanting beauty doesn't mean I don't appreciate what is already beautiful.

Wanting change doesn't mean I have failed.

Desire can be a form of information.

It can tell us where there is life in us.

Maybe instead of making ourselves feel guilty for wanting, we could become better listeners.

The next time I hear myself say,

I wish…

I want to pause.

Because perhaps what comes after those words isn't a complaint at all.

Perhaps it is a clue.

I wish I had more time.

A clue.

I wish I felt more connected.

A clue.

I wish I laughed more.

A clue.

I wish my days felt less like obligations and more like my own.

A very important clue.

And maybe I don't have to solve all of them.

Maybe I just have to listen.

A small experiment

For the next week, I'm going to try something.

Every time I catch myself complaining, I'm going to translate it.

Complaint:

I'm exhausted from doing everything.

Desire:

I want support.

Complaint:

I never get to do what I want.

Desire:

I want more room for myself.

Complaint:

I'm tired of feeling like I'm always behind.

Desire:

I want a slower, more spacious life.

Complaint:

I don't feel appreciated.

Desire:

I want to feel valued.

And then comes the most important question:

Is there one small thing I can do today that moves me toward that desire?

Not a complete life overhaul.

Not a five-year plan.

One small thing.

Because perhaps creating a more positive life isn't about forcing ourselves to be positive.

Maybe it is about becoming fluent in our own longing.

Maybe the complaint is simply the rough draft.

The desire is the sentence underneath it.

And somewhere between the two is a life we are actually allowed to create.

So when my inner critic clears her throat this week, I think I'll let her speak.

I'll listen.

I'll thank her.

And then I'll gently take back the microphone.

There are things I want.

There are things I need.

There are things I am ready to create.

And I don't need criticism to help me get there.

I need curiosity.

I need compassion.

And maybe, just maybe, I need to start listening to my complaints as invitations rather than indictments.

There is a quiet hour in every creative life that no one prepares us for.

We celebrate beginnings. We applaud momentum. We admire the writer with fresh ideas, a growing audience, and words that seem to arrive effortlessly. We call that success because it is visible.

But eventually, almost without noticing, the light changes.

It isn't failure. It isn't defeat. It is simply twilight.

The stories we once felt compelled to tell no longer ask to be written. The subjects that consumed us lose their urgency. The pages become quieter, not because there is nothing left to say, but because life has rearranged itself into a different landscape.

Perhaps every writer has genres they inhabit without realizing it. We write from the seasons we're living.

When we are young, we write about becoming.

When we are wounded, we write about surviving.

When we begin to heal, we write about understanding.

And then, one day, life gently moves the furniture. The old rooms no longer fit. We find ourselves standing in unfamiliar territory, searching for a language that belongs to who we've become instead of who we were.

It can feel unsettling. We wonder whether we've lost something essential.

But maybe twilight isn't about losing the light.

Maybe it's about seeing differently.

Twilight softens the hard edges of the day. It asks less of certainty and more of reflection. It teaches us that beauty doesn't disappear when the sun begins to set; it simply becomes quieter, more nuanced, more willing to be discovered than announced.

Perhaps writing follows the same rhythm.

There are seasons when words arrive like thunderstorms, demanding to be written. There are others when they drift in like evening air, asking only that we sit beside them for a while.

Neither season is more valuable than the other.

The world often celebrates productivity, but creativity has always obeyed a different clock. It has tides. It has winters. It has long walks where nothing seems to happen until we realize we have become someone capable of seeing what we couldn't before.

Maybe the twilight of a writer isn't the closing of a chapter.

Maybe it is the moment we stop writing to prove we have something to say and begin writing because paying attention has become part of who we are.

The page no longer asks us to perform.

It simply invites us to notice.

And perhaps that is the most faithful work any writer can do—not to chase the brightest light, but to remain present as the day changes, trusting that even in twilight, there is still enough light to find our way home.☕️

I've been asking myself a question that feels both unsettling and liberating.

Have I been healing, or have I simply become very good at housekeeping?

Not the kind that leaves the laundry folded or the dishes put away. I'm talking about the emotional housekeeping that follows us into adulthood when childhood leaves behind rooms no one else can see.

For years, I thought healing meant feeling better.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if feeling better and getting better aren't always the same thing.

Housekeeping is what we do to make pain more manageable. We organize it. We distract ourselves from it. We stay productive, overextend ourselves, buy the thing that promises reinvention, wait for the text, chase the accomplishment, collect another reason to believe we've finally moved beyond what happened.

And for a while, it works.

The relief feels real.

But relief isn't always repair.

Repair asks something much more demanding. It asks us to stop treating the symptoms long enough to become curious about their origin. It asks us to stop asking, "Why am I reacting like this?" and begin asking, "When did I first learn to feel this way?"

I've come to believe that our deepest feelings aren't random visitors. They're often carrying old stories.

A harsh comment can awaken a child who never felt good enough.

Being overlooked can resurrect the loneliness of never feeling seen.

A disagreement can feel far bigger than the moment because our nervous system isn't responding only to today—it's recognizing something it met years ago.

Maybe that's why triggers deserve a little more respect than we give them.

We spend so much energy trying to silence them, when perhaps they were never meant to be our enemies.

Maybe they're flashlights.

They illuminate the places we've been stepping around for years.

Instant gratification has its own kind of seduction because it offers immediate relief. It whispers that one more purchase, one more achievement, one more distraction, one more external affirmation will finally settle something inside us.

Sometimes it does—for an afternoon.

But yesterday has a way of waiting.

The wounds we never tended don't disappear because we've become successful, capable, or endlessly busy. They simply learn how to dress themselves in adult clothes.

That's the difference between healing and housekeeping.

Housekeeping keeps the rooms looking presentable.

Healing checks the foundation.

One manages what everyone else can see.

The other has the courage to examine what only we know is there.

I'm realizing that healing isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about becoming honest enough to recognize where my life has been built around protecting old injuries instead of repairing them.

Perhaps that's the real work.

Not chasing another quick remedy. Not trying to outrun yesterday.

But standing still long enough to ask what my deepest feelings have been trying to tell me all along.

Because maybe they were never interrupting my length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

There comes a moment in every theater when the story ends.

The music fades. The actors take their final bow. The curtain falls.

Then something ordinary—and almost sacred—happens.

The house lights come on.

For years, I believed healing meant staying in the dark. I thought if I analyzed every memory, unpacked every family wound, understood every disappointment, and revisited every painful chapter enough times, eventually I would arrive at peace.

But healing has a peculiar way of changing its own assignment.

At first, it asks us to look back.

Eventually, it asks us to look ahead.

Somewhere along the way, I mistook awareness for progress. I became fluent in my own pain. I could explain why people behaved the way they did. I understood trauma, attachment, nervous system dysregulation, boundaries, family roles, grief, and loss. I learned the language of healing so well that I forgot healing was never supposed to become my permanent address.

You can spend so much time studying the map that you forget to begin the journey.

Around the same time, another kind of healing quietly began.

I stopped trying to sound like the writer I thought people wanted to read.

For years, I hid behind a carefully curated lexicon, believing that if my words were beautiful enough, no one would notice the woman behind them. It felt safer to be admired than to be known.

But authenticity has a funny way of knocking on the door until you finally answer it.

So I started letting people meet me.

I'm a practicing Jew whose faith anchors me in ways I never fully appreciated. I still know far too many KISS lyrics by heart, and Duran Duran can transport me back to another lifetime with a single guitar riff. Give me coffee, a cozy sweater, and a room full of cats, and I'm home. I have no interest in arguing politics because I'd rather spend my energy building bridges than choosing sides.

None of those things make me extraordinary.

They simply make me...me.

For a long time, I was afraid that if people saw the unedited version instead of the polished one, they might decide I wasn't who they imagined.

Instead, something unexpected happened.

The more transparent I became, the lighter I felt.

It turns out authenticity doesn't ask us to become someone new.

It simply asks us to stop hiding the person we've been all along.

There are still wounds.

There are still relationships that ache when I think about them. There are friendships that left me with more questions than answers. There are family stories that won't magically rewrite themselves because I've grown.

Life still hands us storms.

But I no longer believe every storm deserves a lifetime of forecasting.

Some clouds simply pass.

For so long I thought peace would arrive only after every unanswered question had been answered.

Now I wonder if peace arrives the moment we stop demanding answers from people who were never capable of giving them.

Maybe closure isn't something they hand us.

Maybe it's something we quietly hand ourselves.

I've spent enough years asking, Why did this happen?

Lately, I've been asking a different question.

What beautiful thing can happen now?

That question has changed everything.

I've started noticing mornings instead of memories.

Coffee tastes warmer when you're not drinking it beside yesterday.

The sky has colors I somehow missed while staring at old photographs.

I've laughed without immediately wondering whether joy somehow diminished what I'd survived.

I've begun trusting that happiness doesn't betray my past.

It honors my future.

The truth is, there will probably always be loose threads.

A conversation I wish had gone differently.

An apology that never arrived.

A version of me that deserved more than she received.

But I don't want to become a curator of old heartbreak.

I want to become a gardener.

I want to spend more time planting than excavating.

More time building than explaining.

More time standing in the sunlight than studying the weather report.

Healing did exactly what it was supposed to do.

It introduced me to myself.

Now it is gently asking me to go live with the woman I found.

Because there comes a moment when the house lights come on.

The performance is over.

You gather your coat.

You thank the story for everything it taught you.

Then you walk outside.

Not because you've forgotten the darkness, but because you've remembered something even more important.

The world is still waiting for you in the daylight.

And maybe the brightest chapter of your life isn't the one where you finally understand your past.

Maybe it's the one where you stop living there.

The house lights are on.

It's time to go home.☕️

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" wasn't.

Lately, I've been thinking less about the obvious wounds of childhood and more about the absences—the words I waited to hear but never did. Not because my parents were incapable of love, but because they were carrying burdens of their own. They couldn't give what they had never learned to give themselves.

For years, I thought healing meant becoming stronger. More resilient. Less emotional. I became an expert at pushing my feelings down, convincing myself that if I ignored them long enough, they would eventually disappear.

They didn't.

Emotions don't dissolve under pressure. They gather beneath the surface, waiting for the moment they can no longer be ignored. What we suppress doesn't leave us. It echoes. It finds its way back through anxiety, self doubt, perfectionism, people pleasing, or the belief that we somehow have to earn our place in the world.

I've come to believe that this is where shadow work begins.

Not in darkness.

But in honesty.

It's sitting with the parts of ourselves we've spent years trying to outgrow and realizing they never wanted to control us. They simply wanted to be acknowledged.

As I began listening more carefully, I realized what those younger parts of me had been waiting for all along.

"I'm proud of you."

"You don't have to be perfect."

"I believe you."

"You matter."

"Your feelings make sense."

"You don't have to earn love."

"You are enough."

They seem like such ordinary sentences.

But when you've lived without them, they become extraordinary.

I spent years searching for those words in accomplishments, relationships, applause, and the approval of other people. Every achievement felt good for a moment, but the feeling never stayed. No amount of validation from the outside could quiet the ache that was asking to be met from within.

Then something shifted.

I stopped asking why no one had said those things to me, and I began asking a different question.

What would happen if I said them to myself?

At first it felt uncomfortable, almost foreign. I wasn't used to speaking to myself with kindness. Compassion had always been something I extended to everyone else first.

But little by little, those words stopped feeling borrowed.

They became believable.

I don't think healing is about rewriting the past. We can't return to our childhood and change what happened—or what didn't happen. But we can change the voice that accompanies us through the rest of our lives.

Perhaps that is the quiet work of becoming whole.

Children don't just remember the harsh words that were spoken.

They also remember the loving words that never came.

And maybe shadow work isn't about confronting the darkest parts of ourselves at all.

Maybe it's about sitting beside the younger version of ourselves and gently offering what she has been waiting to hear for years.

I'm here.

I believe you.

You were never too much.

You never had to earn your worth.

You were always enough.

Sometimes healing doesn't arrive with a breakthrough.

Sometimes it arrives as a whisper that slowly becomes louder than the echoes.☕️

Right before the pandemic, I decided to do something radical. I changed the culture of my life and embarked on a ketogenic diet. I lost close to fifty pounds and chronicled the transformation on social media. The encouragement poured in. People celebrated every milestone, and my endocrinologist officially took me off my diabetes medication. I was in remission.

It felt like a victory.

But the lifestyle was fleeting. In less than a year, I found myself where so many dieters do: the moment I stopped, the weight began to return. What I had changed on the outside hadn't yet taken root on the inside.

I loved being cheered on. Every pound lost brought another congratulatory comment, another message, another reminder that people were watching. Of course, there were critics too. There always are. Their words stung, but if I'm honest, so did the praise. I had unknowingly tied my worth to both. When other people celebrated me, I felt valuable. When they criticized me, I questioned myself.

The real takeaway wasn't about ketosis or calories, before-and-after photos or compliments. It was realizing how malleable the outer surface of our lives really is. Bodies change. Weight changes. Applause comes and goes. Public admiration has a remarkably short shelf life.

What I was missing was something far less visible and infinitely more enduring: self-love.

I needed to fall in love with myself more than the idea of other people loving me.

That realization didn't happen overnight. It came quietly, after the excitement faded and the photos stopped getting shared. It arrived when I understood that I had been chasing acceptance in places where it could never fully satisfy me. I had mistaken admiration for belonging, compliments for contentment, and approval for peace.

Looking back, I don't regret that season. It taught me discipline, resilience, and that my body is capable of remarkable things. It showed me that I could make difficult choices and honor commitments. But it also revealed the lesson I needed most.

Lasting transformation doesn't begin when the scale changes. It begins when your relationship with yourself does.

Because the greatest weight I ever needed to lose wasn't measured in pounds. It was the belief that I had to earn love from everyone else before I was worthy of giving it to myself.

Today, I know something I couldn't have understood back then. Health matters. Strength matters. Caring for our bodies matters. But none of it can replace the quiet, steady work of accepting the person who has been with us all along.

The weight of wanting to be loved is far heavier than anything a scale could ever measure. And learning to put that weight down has been the most meaningful transformation of my life.☕️

<a class="image-link image2 that lyric that's stayed with me for years.

I used to hear it as a love song.

Now I hear it as a promise.

Not to someone else, but to the parts of myself I abandoned along the way.

The woman who learned to shrink before anyone asked her to. The one who talked herself out of opportunities before life had the chance to offer them. The one who settled for less, not because she wasn't capable of more, but because somewhere along the way she forgot she already was enough.

I'm coming back for her.

For a long time, I believed healing meant understanding my past.

So I did the work. I learned the language of trauma. I connected the dots. I traced behaviors back to childhood and finally understood why I became the person I am.

That work mattered.

It gave me compassion for myself.

It gave me context.

But lately I've realized something that has been harder to admit.

Understanding my patterns hasn't always changed them.

I know I'm good enough.

That isn't the question anymore.

So what the hell is holding me back?

Why do I minimize myself just as something good begins to unfold? Why do I negotiate myself downward before anyone else has the chance? Why do I quietly accept less than I'm capable of—not because someone told me to, but because it feels familiar?

No one is doing that to me anymore.

I am.

That may be the hardest sentence I've ever written.

It's easier to blame the past. Easier to point to old wounds and say, "That's why."

And maybe it was.

But eventually there comes a moment when the explanation expires.

What's left is a choice.

Do I keep living by the rules that once protected me, or do I admit they no longer belong in the life I'm trying to build?

I've spent years asking why I became this way.

Now I'm asking a different question.

Why do I keep agreeing to stay this way?

Not because I don't know better.

Because change asks something of me that understanding never did.

It asks me to risk disappointment.

To stop rehearsing failure before I've even begun.

To stop assuming the answer is no before I've even asked the question.

To stop negotiating my life down to something merely acceptable.

Maybe my greatest obstacle isn't my past anymore.

Maybe it's the quiet agreement I've continued to make with it.

The agreement that says, "Play it safe."

"Don't ask for too much."

"Don't take up too much space."

"Be grateful for whatever comes your way."

Those beliefs may have protected me once.

Today, they only keep me small.

Maybe this is what reclaiming yourself actually looks like.

Not becoming someone new.

Not fixing yourself.

Not waiting until you're fearless.

Just deciding that you're no longer willing to abandon yourself in the moments that matter most.

The truth is, I don't think I'm searching for confidence anymore.

I'm searching for permission.

Permission to trust myself.

Permission to stop apologizing for my gifts.

Permission to believe that the life I quietly imagine isn't unrealistic—it might actually be waiting for me.

Maybe this isn't another chapter about healing.

Maybe it's a chapter about returning.

Returning to the woman who existed before fear convinced her to live a smaller life.

And if it takes me all night...

I'll keep coming back until I find her.☕️

<a class="image-link image2 length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

There was a time when I believed strength looked like availability.

I was the person who answered the phone, solved the problem, carried the burden, remembered the birthdays, filled the empty chairs, and stepped into the chaos before anyone else had to. Dependable became part of my identity. I wore it like a badge of honor, never realizing how heavy it had become.

Without noticing, I became the Giving Tree.

Not because anyone intentionally asked me to give away every part of myself, but because somewhere along the way I learned to equate love with sacrifice. I believed my value could be measured by how much of myself I was willing to hand over.

A branch here.

A handful of leaves there.

Shade for everyone else while I weathered every season.

At first, it felt purposeful. Giving usually does.

But seasons have a way of revealing truths we spend years trying not to see.

One day, I looked around and realized I had become so consumed with tending everyone else's garden that I had forgotten my own roots. My days revolved around responsibilities, reassurance, and five-alarm fires that rarely belonged to me. My nervous system had become so accustomed to anticipating the next crisis that peace itself began to feel unfamiliar.

The hardest part wasn't becoming tired.

It was becoming unrecognizable to myself.

From the outside, people still saw the tree. They remembered the branches, the shade, the fruit, the person who always found a way to make everything okay.

What they couldn't see were the rings beneath the bark.

The disappointments.

The losses.

The invisible exhaustion.

The years my central nervous system confused survival with living.

Eventually, even the strongest tree can only give away so much before all that's left is a stump carved with everyone else's initials.

For a long time, I thought that stump represented failure.

Now I see it differently.

Perhaps it simply marks the end of one season and the beginning of another.

I no longer want a life measured by how much I can carry.

I want a life measured by how deeply I can breathe.

Less urgency.

Less rescuing.

Less responsibility for things that were never mine to own.

Less reassurance that everything and everyone will be okay.

More quiet mornings.

More boundaries that don't require an explanation.

More relationships built on mutual care instead of quiet depletion.

More moments where my first instinct is to ask, "What do I need?" before asking what everyone else needs from me.

For years, I believed peace was something I earned after everyone else was okay.

Now I understand that peace isn't the reward for self sacrifice.

It begins the moment we stop believing we have to earn it.

Healing, I've discovered, isn't about becoming the person I used to be.

It's about becoming someone new.

Someone who no longer mistakes exhaustion for purpose.

Someone who understands that constantly giving isn't the same as constantly loving.

Someone who knows that protecting her own well being isn't selfish—it's sustainable.

The remarkable thing about trees is that they don't apologize for winter.

They don't force blossoms in January or cling to leaves that have already served their purpose. They rest. They conserve. They trust that their roots are doing invisible work beneath the surface.

Perhaps that's where I am now.

Not broken.

Not finished.

Simply tending to the roots after years of living like branches.

There is a quiet kind of hope in that.

Not loud enough to announce itself.

Not dramatic enough to attract applause.

Just steady enough to become a different way of living.

The Giving Tree never got another chapter.

Maybe that's because we're meant to write it ourselves.

This is mine.

Not as a stump mourning everything that was taken, but as someone discovering that even after a season of giving away so much, life has a remarkable way of beginning again.

This time, my roots come first.☕️

Life sometimes feels like smoke and mirrors, as though we're all living under a remarkably convincing spell.

We catch ourselves believing that someone else has somehow figured it all out. Their family seems closer. Their career appears effortless. Their friendships look easier. Their confidence feels natural.

It's an easy illusion to believe because we're only ever seeing one side of the glass.

I wonder how often we mistake someone's finished chapter for their entire story.

How much had to quietly percolate before they arrived where they are today? The disappointments no one witnessed. The ordinary Tuesdays. The moments of uncertainty that never made it into conversation.

Most of us carry those unseen chapters.

Perhaps that's why comparison has such persuasive timing. It arrives just as we're forgetting that every life contains a private landscape.

Maybe the grass doesn't become greener because it belongs to someone else. Maybe it simply looks that way from where we're standing.

I've started thinking that life isn't asking us to look harder at everyone else's path. It gently nudges us to become more curious about our own.

There is something comforting about remembering that appearances are only one small piece of a much larger picture. The rest—the soft becoming, the small decisions, the unseen courage—is where life has always been unfolding.

Sometimes all it takes is remembering that the smoke eventually drifts away, and mirrors never tell the whole story.

Maybe that's enough—to remember that every life holds a few unseen rooms, and we were never meant to compare ourselves to the view through someone else's window.☕️

There comes a point where you've read enough.

Enough books. Enough articles. Enough podcasts. Enough social media posts telling you why you feel the way you do, how to fix yourself, and what your next step should be.

At first, that information can be a lifeline. It gives language to experiences we couldn't explain and reminds us we're not alone. There is comfort in finally finding words that fit.

But somewhere along the way, something curious happens.

We begin looking for ourselves in everything.

One article tells us we're people pleasers. Another says we're highly sensitive. A third explains our attachment style. We take quizzes, compare notes, and nod along as if each new description unlocks another piece of who we are.

"That sounds exactly like me."

Maybe it does.

Or maybe we've become so accustomed to searching for ourselves in other people's words that we've stopped listening to our own.

I've started wondering if the next stage of growth isn't learning more about ourselves. Maybe it's trusting ourselves more.

Not every disappointment needs a diagnosis.

Not every difficult relationship requires a psychological postmortem.

Not every emotion needs a label before it's allowed to exist.

Sometimes we're simply disappointed. Sometimes we're joyful. Sometimes we're uncertain. Sometimes we're just having an ordinary Tuesday.

Life doesn't always need to be interpreted. Sometimes it just needs to be lived.

I've also noticed how easy it is to inherit expectations that were never really ours. We read about what success should look like, how friendships should unfold, what healing is supposed to feel like, or how quickly we should move on from disappointment. Before long, we're measuring our own lives against someone else's roadmap.

What if we stopped doing that?

What if we allowed our own experiences to become the teacher?

What if we decided that our feelings deserved as much weight as the opinions of strangers we follow online?

Living on your own terms isn't about ignoring wisdom. It's about knowing when you've gathered enough of it to become your own compass.

There is freedom in no longer needing every article to validate your feelings before you trust them.

There is peace in letting an experience simply be an experience instead of turning it into a case study.

And there is confidence that quietly arrives when you realize you don't need someone else to narrate your life back to you.

You already know more than you think you do.

Perhaps the goal was never to become an expert at healing.

Perhaps the goal was always to heal enough that you could get back to the beautiful, ordinary business of living your life.

On your own terms.

Guided not by every headline that catches your attention, but by the quiet voice that has been inside you all along.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" What do I want for the year ahead?

But this year, I found myself asking a different question:

What did I create?

Somewhere along the way, I stopped looking at creativity as something reserved for “real writers” or people with a certain title attached to their name. Creativity became something much more personal. It became a way of seeing the world, collecting little moments, noticing patterns, and turning everyday thoughts into something meaningful.

I realized I had been carrying around stories for years.

The funny observations. The lessons learned. The little sparks of inspiration that show up while drinking coffee, taking a walk, listening to a song, or having a conversation that makes you think, “There’s something here.”

For a long time, those thoughts stayed in my own little notebook of life. Then one day I decided to open the door and let them out.

I started writing.

Not because I had everything figured out. Not because I needed permission. Not because I knew exactly where it would lead.

I wrote because I had something to say.

There is something incredibly empowering about taking an idea that exists only inside your own mind and giving it a place in the world. It’s a small act of courage that says: “This thought matters. This perspective matters. My voice matters.”

Maybe that is the best birthday gift we can give ourselves — the willingness to keep discovering who we are becoming.

Birthdays are often seen as a celebration of the years behind us, but I think they can also be a declaration for the years ahead.

A yearly reminder that we are allowed to reinvent, explore, create, and surprise ourselves.

This year, my birthday wish is simple:

Keep creating.

Keep dreaming up ideas.

Keep sharing the things that make me curious.

Because maybe the greatest accomplishment isn’t becoming someone new.

Maybe it’s finally allowing yourself to fully become who you were all along.

And who knows?

Maybe the next idea that comes from a quiet moment, a cup of coffee, or a random thought will be the one that makes someone else say:

“Wait… why didn’t I think of that?”

There comes a moment in life when we have to ask ourselves a question that can feel both simple and profound:

Am I living my life, or am I simply responding to it?

For many of us, we become incredibly skilled at responding. We learn how to anticipate needs, manage expectations, keep things moving, and hold everything together. We become experts at adapting to the people and circumstances around us.

But somewhere along the way, we may forget something important:

We are not just participants in our lives.

We are the creators.

Self-agency is the recognition that we have ownership over our choices, our direction, and the way we move through the world. It does not mean we control every outcome. Life will always bring unexpected chapters, circumstances we did not choose, and moments that challenge us.

But agency reminds us that we still have a voice in what happens next.

I think of life as something we curate.

A curator does not create every piece in a collection. They carefully choose what belongs. They decide what represents the vision. They understand that some things are meant to be preserved, some things are meant to be appreciated for what they taught us, and some things no longer belong in the space we are creating.

Our lives work the same way.

We curate our relationships.
We curate our environments.
We curate where we spend our energy.
We curate the stories we continue to tell ourselves.

And perhaps the hardest thing we curate is our own identity.

For a long time, many of us define ourselves by what we have endured, what others expected of us, or the roles we learned to play. We become the caretaker, the helper, the dependable one, the person who always shows up.

Those parts of us may be beautiful. They may represent our generosity and our capacity to love.

But self-agency asks another question:

Where do I show up for myself?

Becoming the sole proprietor of your life means recognizing that you are responsible for the direction of your own journey. Not because everything that happens is within your control, but because your response, your boundaries, and your choices still belong to you.

A business owner cannot control every market shift. They cannot predict every challenge. But they can decide where they invest, what they build, and what they are no longer willing to sustain.

Our lives are no different.

We get to decide what receives our time.
We get to decide what receives our energy.
We get to decide what deserves a place in our future.

There is tremendous freedom in realizing we do not need permission to evolve.

We do not need permission to outgrow spaces that no longer fit.
We do not need permission to change our minds.
We do not need permission to choose peace over chaos.

Agency is not about becoming someone new.

It is about returning to ourselves.

It is about recognizing that even after every disappointment, every detour, every unexpected chapter, we are still holding the pen.

The question is no longer:

“Why did this happen to me?”

The question becomes:

“What will I create from here?”

Because our lives are not just something that happens to us.

They are something we have the opportunity to thoughtfully, intentionally, and courageously curate.

<a class="image-link image2 Not of possessions or accomplishments, but of the moments, lessons, and relationships that have shaped me.

Birthdays have a funny way of making us reflect on where we’ve been, who has walked beside us, and what we’ve learned along the way.

One lesson that keeps coming back to me is the difference between connection and transaction.

There is a beautiful thing about reciprocity. Healthy relationships have a natural rhythm. We show up for each other. We give, we receive, we support. It doesn’t always happen perfectly or evenly, but there is a genuine care underneath it.

A transaction, however, feels different.

A transaction keeps score.

It quietly asks: “What did I do for you, and what are you going to do for me?”

And somewhere along the way, a favor becomes a debt. A kindness becomes an expectation. A relationship starts to feel less like a safe place and more like a balance sheet.

The older I get, the more I realize that true character is revealed when there is nothing to gain.

It’s easy to show up when there is recognition, appreciation, or the promise of something in return. But the people who give simply because it is in their heart to give — those are the people who remind us what genuine friendship looks like.

Kindness does not need an audience.
Love does not need a receipt.
A good deed should not come with an invoice attached.

I’ve learned that tightening my circle does not mean my heart has become smaller. It means I have become more intentional with where I place my energy.

I no longer want relationships where I have to prove my worth by how much I give, how much I fix, or how much I carry. I don’t want friendships where there is an invisible tally keeping track of who called last, who helped more, or who owes what.

I want friendships where people show up because they care, not because they are waiting for their investment to be returned.

Maybe growing older is realizing that the goal isn’t to have the biggest circle. It’s to have the most genuine one.

The people who matter most are the ones who don’t need a ledger.

They don’t count the times they were there for you. They just are.

And as I step into another year, I’m learning that protecting my peace isn’t about shutting people out. It’s about making room for the relationships that feel like home.

The ones where kindness is not a transaction.

It’s simply a reflection of the heart behind it☕️

There is a certain kind of exhaustion that comes from always being the person who shows up.

The one who remembers.
The one who checks in.
The one who gives grace, makes excuses, and keeps the door open just a little longer.

For a long time, I believed that if I loved people well enough, they would eventually meet me there. If I offered kindness, patience, and understanding, it would naturally come back around.

But life has a way of teaching us that not everyone has the capacity to give what we are willing to receive.

And that lesson can hurt.

I’ve spent a lot of time wondering why I feel disappointed when people fall short. Why does it sting when the energy I give isn’t returned? Why does letting my guard down sometimes feel like an invitation to be let down?

Maybe the answer isn’t that I expect too much.

Maybe I’ve been expecting the wrong people to carry things they were never equipped to hold.

I recently ended my love affair with toxic relationships. Not because I stopped caring, but because I finally started caring about myself enough to recognize the cost.

There is a difference between being loving and being available for repeated disappointment.

There is a difference between understanding someone’s circumstances and abandoning your own needs in the process.

I’m learning that relationships are not meant to be transactions. We don’t love people because we are keeping score. We don’t show up with a mental ledger waiting for repayment.

But there is still something sacred about reciprocity.

A healthy relationship should not leave one person constantly depleted while the other simply receives.

Maybe the universal screwdriver for relationships is this:

Meet people where they are, but keep them where they belong.

Some people belong in the front row of your life. Some belong a few seats back. Some are only meant to be part of a chapter, not the entire story.

The hard part is accepting that where someone belongs may not be where you wanted them to be.

Lately, I’ve found myself spending more time in solitude. At first, I wondered if I was withdrawing. If I was becoming too guarded.

But maybe solitude is not always loneliness.

Sometimes solitude is where we finally hear ourselves again.

It’s where we stop chasing connection and start cultivating peace.

I don’t want to build walls around my heart. I don’t want disappointment to turn me into someone I don’t recognize.

I simply want to stop handing out keys to people who never planned to take care of the home.

So I’m learning.

I can love people without carrying them.
I can understand people without excusing everything.
I can appreciate people without expecting them to become someone they are not.

And maybe the greatest gift we can give ourselves is not lowering our expectations.

It’s placing them in the right places.

<a milestones, and the things we can check off a list. But sometimes the greatest gifts in our lives are the people who remind us to stop checking boxes and start noticing the moments.

Friends can be a conduit for a happy life.

Not because they are responsible for our happiness, but because they create pathways to it. They invite us out of our routines. They make us laugh when we forgot we could. They remind us of versions of ourselves we may have misplaced along the way.

The right friends don’t just walk beside us through the difficult seasons. They celebrate the ordinary ones. They turn a cup of coffee into an afternoon. A quick conversation into a memory. A simple invitation into a reminder that life is meant to be experienced, not just endured.

There is something powerful about being known. About having people who understand your stories, your quirks, your favorite things, and the little details that make you who you are.

Maybe happiness isn’t always something we have to chase.

Maybe sometimes it finds us through the people who say, “Come with me.”

The people who encourage us to try something new. The people who pull us into the sunshine when we’ve been standing in the shade. The people who remind us that joy doesn’t always arrive in grand moments. Sometimes it shows up in laughter, shared memories, and the comfort of knowing we belong somewhere.

A happy life isn’t a life without challenges.

It’s a life filled with people who help us see that even alongside the hard moments, there is still so much beauty waiting to be noticed.

And maybe that is one of the greatest gifts of friendship:

Not that someone gives us happiness.

But that they help us find our way back to it.

There are people who enter a room and leave it brighter. Their presence feels easy, reciprocal, and restorative. Time spent with them doesn't feel like work. There is space to breathe, to share, to simply exist without performing a role.

And then there are the hasslers.

Not villains. Not necessarily toxic. Just people who create a constant hum of emotional friction. Every text feels urgent. Every conversation circles back to their latest crisis. Every interaction requires something from you—a solution, reassurance, validation, advice, or attention. Over time, you begin to realize that what you thought was friendship has quietly become a responsibility.

The challenge is that many of us don't recognize a hassler until we're exhausted.

We answer the phone because we're kind. We listen because we care. We show up because that's what good people do. But somewhere along the way, the relationship shifts. The balance disappears. What was once an occasional act of support becomes an ongoing obligation. We become the designated problem solver, the emotional first responder, the keeper of someone else's peace.

And it is draining.

Not because helping people is wrong, but because some people never stop needing help. Their emergencies become routine. Their chaos becomes familiar. Their problems arrive with such frequency that they leave little room for your own joys, struggles, or experiences.

The most exhausting part is that hasslers rarely announce themselves. They don't arrive carrying signs that say, "I will consume your energy." Often they are people we genuinely love. Friends. Family members. Acquaintances who seem to live in a perpetual state of urgency. They may not even realize the toll they take on others.

Yet our bodies know.

We feel it in the hesitation before answering a call. In the sigh that escapes when their name appears on our phone. In the fatigue that follows every interaction. We leave conversations feeling heavier than when we entered them, carrying burdens that were never ours to begin with.

For those of us who have spent our lives caring for others, hasslers can feel strangely familiar. We were taught that being needed meant being valued. That saying yes was proof of love. That carrying other people's emotional weight was simply the cost of connection.

But healthy relationships don't require one person to do all the carrying.

They create space for mutual support. They allow both people to be seen. They understand that friendship is not an endless withdrawal from one person's emotional bank account. It is an exchange. A rhythm. A shared investment in each other's well being.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" But lately I've been thinking about it differently.

What if we do this emotionally, too?

Many of us spend our energy on things that look valuable from the outside. We chase approval. We become indispensable. We say yes when we mean no. We collect accomplishments, obligations, and expectations as though they are proof of a life well lived.

The trouble is that these things often cost more than we realize.

We spend ourselves trying to be wanted and then find ourselves begging to be understood. We spend our days earning validation and wonder why we still feel unseen. We pour our energy into maintaining appearances and discover we have little left for peace, rest, or joy.

The sparkle isn't always material. Sometimes it's being the reliable one. The fixer. The caretaker. The person who never disappoints anyone.

And while there is beauty in generosity, there is danger in spending so much of yourself that you become emotionally overdrawn.

I've learned that what we need is often far less glamorous than what we want. We need boundaries more than applause. We need belonging more than popularity. We need quiet more than attention. We need relationships where love does not have to be earned over and over again.

The older I get, the more I understand that a meaningful life isn't built on what dazzles us.
